I liked the part where he sang about his mojo for 20 minutes
Always got time for a little Muddy Waters. I can't say I've ever heard a live show where they play the same song back-to-back, though. Granted, 'I've Got My Mojo Working' is a tune but it stills seems a little unnecessary.

The variety of this album is staggering. The leaps of one song being psy-trance to the next being Death Metal to a smooth synthwave number do an electroclash ditty. Muddy Waters does it all here. Not really. Just a great live blues set. I mean, what else would it be? Best Tracks: I Got My Brand On You; Baby, Please Don't Go; I've Got My Mojo Working
A few well-known and now classic tracks covered by many others. However, it doesn't have the excitement of the BB King live concert that was also showcased here a few weeks ago. Low 3.
I haven’t gotten into blues but this might just do it. I really love the intro part to the first song.

This may be more a criticism of early blues (or blues in general), but a lot of these tunes sound so similar. I know that's just me being uneducated and unfamiliar with the nuance of solos and lyrical stylings, but I can't quite get into it.

One of my favorite works from mid century. Fun tracks front to back.
The first Muddy Waters album I got really introduced his style to me, and I found it pretty inspired and surprisingly engaging. This one (while admittedly released 17 years before the other one) is not as "inspired," so I can't put it at the level of that one, but I do love his command of the blues.

Pretty sound stuff, just didn't fit the mood of the day when listening to it. Hard to dislike though.
This was fine, pleasant enough to listen to (although I didn't think there was any need for two parts to the Mojo song), but not spectacular. Tiger in Your Tank and Soon Forgotten are the highlights. 3/5.

I have not heard this yet, looking forward to it. Upon first listen it’s a pretty good recording for a live show from 1960. This obviously influenced all of the British invasion bands, more than half the songs have been covered by the Stones, Zepplin, The Who, etc. and while it’s not terrible, It’s not my cup of tea.

I'm not a big blues fan but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. It's repetitive for me as, again, not a big blues fan, but it was solid.
Solid blues/rock n roll album. While I find it odd that this list leans into too many live albums, this is one of the great one. Heard live these tracks are more interesting to my ears as I find Blues can go a bit samey for me. No disrespect to the genre, just not completely my taste. No doubt a hardcore blues fan would think the same of some of the punk and pop I love. Muddy Waters is at the top of his game here and his backing band are tight. This is good stuff

Lovely lovely lovely blues album. Always knew his name, but didn't realize how much I enjoy his music. Toes the line between big band and blues, getting some real big Louisiana sound out of tracks like 'I Feel So Good' / 'Got My Mojo Working' and then settling into a more somber mood for 'I Got My Brand On You' and 'Goodbye Newport Blues'.

Ahh, that was a fun listen. Certainly understand why it's made the list! Love a bit of funky harmonica. These songs are really jams, at the end of the day. Relaxing, fun, bluesy. All among my favorite moods. What I love about this album is that it meets you where you are. If you're in a good mood it's toe-tapping, and if you're not, it's mellow. Somehow, amazingly, it occupies both spaces at once very effectively. The sound is so polished it's hard to believe it's even a live album. Amazing. Fave track: I Feel So Good.
I don't know that I've ever listened to Muddy Waters. So, let's see how this goes...! Well, he's cited by pretty much every blues/rock singer/guitarist ever, and with good reason. This sounds like where it all would have come from. I'm not a connoisseur of the blues, but this was a great listen. Things that stood out to me were the quality of the recording, and how trashy (in a good way) the snare/hi-hats sound. And, I love the tinkling piano flourishes in all the right places. In addition to the guitar and harmonica chops. It's all good. And, I'll put this on again.
I love Muddy Waters, but it's really hard for me to "judge" albums like this. In truth, a live blues album from 1960 doesn't sound much different that a studio blues album (outside of the people clapping in between). And, the performance is solid - but I'm not sure it's special in relation to other Muddy Waters albums, or even other blues musicians. Blues is good. Muddy Waters is good at the blues. Good job.

A great Blues standard, for a live album it sounds perfect like it could be a studio recording aside from the fact you can hear the crowd getting more and more excited throughout the performance, as well as the little audience interaction bits between songs. What's not to like?

Great, stomping blues record. Wish the bass had been better recorded, but that's just me I guess. Watching the video footage from this show on YouTube really made the music come alive for me too.
Never really listened to blues, but this just changed my mind about it
If you wanted a glimpse into what a popular Blues concert was like, while the artist was still young and at their height of popularity look no further. Muddy Waters croons and sings with an energy and magnetism that make it easy to understand how the genre was so popular, and why his voice is such a big part of it and so timeless.

The argument I have seen online is that the blues has a limited vocabulary. Yes, the blues can be somewhat... limited. But performed by a master, like Waters, the blues will always sound like a lot more. Hard to believe that this is from 60 years ago. The recording sounds pretty good for that long ago. I would have liked a bigger instrumentation, but it's live. So... what can you expect? Amazing guitar work by Muddy Waters here. Without stuff by him, most rock would have not existed.
Great sound for a live album - you can hear everything you need to musically. Simple start with I Got my Brand on You (classic blues style). You get to hear a bit more instrument skill on Baby Please Don't Go (listen 1min in). Soon Forgotten shows even more of Muddy Water's guitar skill in particular. But for me, it's I've Got My Mojo Working (both parts) that really lights it up.

This Muddy Waters album was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island on July 3rd 1960. Muddy Waters was one of the most popular blues artists of the 1950s, so it's no surprise his band was playing at this festival. However this day of the festival was almost cancelled after a riot the night before, but the promoter convinced the city council to let it continue. Because of this decision, we now have a piece of blues history recorded live! The blues music is the older Chicago style, but that's what makes it so unique. It sounds like Muddy Waters was performing in a cool, relaxed way, when there are reports that the audience absolutely loved his music and were all dancing. The recording was well done too, since we can hear all the individual instruments, as well as the powerful baritone voice of Muddy Waters. If you are a fan of blues music, then this is one album you can't miss!
Blues pretty much as good as gets. All the standards are on here. It's impossible to underestimate how important artists like Muddy Waters were in the development of rock and roll, especially in Britain.
And here it is one of the finest Blues artists. Every song is a banger music to dance and to listen. We all know Blues music gave birth to pretty much everything we listen to but it's also amazing music in it's own right and Muddy waters is the master. The piano the brass the vocals all of it sublime.

Live albums that end with "At Newport" are guaranteed to be an artist's best. Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and now Muddy Waters. Waters is obviously a mainstay of blues, and I'd say there isn't nearly enough blues on this list, but I'm glad they chose this one. Blues is a pretty simple genre, so you need to bring as much personality in order to make it shine. Waters had personality in spades. He has full command over the audience, with his naturally compelling voice and excellent guitar skills. The whole set is great, but "Got My Mojo Working" is the clear highlight, followed by part 2 and then the excellent closer "Goodbye Newport Blues". This one is a bonafide classic.
106. Live at Newport - Muddy Waters 13 tracks I'm not a huge blues fan, but this was great. Some Blues feels a little droney & monotonous to me, but this was punchy and kept me engaged. Really enjoyed it. 4/5
This is better than the other Muddy Waters I've heard, but the problem with Chicago blues is that it all basically sounds the same. There hasn't been any innovation in the genre since it left the Delta almost a hundred years ago, and that's painfully obvious here.

Classic blues album, some great solos. "I'm Your Hoochie Coohie Man" my favourite song on the album.
It was really interesting to see one of the styles that influenced rock music. A few of the songs are great, although the lyrics mostly exist to accompany the music rather than have any interesting meaning.

Very interesting how raw things were 60 years ago.
There's a charisma to this recording that eases itself across time, space, even the setting for the recording (live albums always capture a different kind of energy, I think. There's an intimacy here that is neither a natural presence on the stage or even in the studio.).

Fand/finde das Setting erstmal etwas merkwürdig, in my head: Diese tief spelunkige Blues-Legenda auf so ner (kommt mir so vor) etwas edel-feuilletonistischen Studentenveranstaltung wie dem Newport Folk Festival. Ich habe aber auch einfach keine Ahnung davon - weder vom Blues, noch vom NFF. Es läuft also so durch, bringt die Glieder nicht unmittelbar zum Zucken, könnte das aber wahrscheinlich schon wenn ich in der richtigen Stimmung bin (spelunkig!) Ach so, und natürlich wohnen wir hier einer der Geburtsstudnden des Rock'n'Roll bei.

No suena mal. Y hay clasicazos, pero no es mi estilo y los directos menos aún. La casualidad hace que esta misma mañana estuvieran hablando en la radio de la canción "I've got my mojo working".
Ya he mencionado que el blues puro no es mi máximo, pero aquí hay una presentación impecable. Waters comienza con "I Got My Brand On You" absolutamente animado y simplemente va construyendo la presentación a partir de esa base. El álbum alcanza su punto máximo con "Tiger In Your Hand", "I Feel So Good" y "Got My Mojo Working". La batería, el piano que casi rebota, la armónica asombrosa y, por supuesto, la guitarra y la voz de Waters son probablemente en esta grabación una de las mejores interpretaciones en vivo que he escuchado. El público parece sentir lo mismo, la banda los lleva a gritos histéricos que generalmente se escucharían en esos públicos de niñas adolescentes viendo a los Beatles o a los Monkees y no de los asistentes a un festival de jazz. As a guitarist who discovered the blues early on, I recognize this album;s role in bringing the blues to a wider US and UK audience in the early '60s. Muddy Water's influence on artists such as the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and countless others cannot be overstated. His was the definitive statement of the Chicago Blues (by way of Mississippi). His music is buoyant, joyous, and super accessible.

At Newport 1960 by Muddy Waters (1960) Muddy Waters, the Mississippi blues guitarist/vocalist par excellence, performed this set live at the Newport Jazz Festival in July 1960. “Live” means the listener must filter out crowd commotion, off-beat hand claps, mic stand rumbles, wind noise, and other sundry distractions, but as live albums go, it’s not too bad. On this recording, we are treated primarily to Waters’ blues vocals and ‘compositions’ (primarily his, but also some by Willie Dixon and others—even Langston Hughes gets in on the act). It should be noted that these songs are characterized by significant melodic and lyrical borrowing from traditional Deep South blues. The performance reflects the evolving quality of blues music by 1960. It is both nostalgic and evocative, clearly demonstrating what it was that made such an impression on the next generation of popular music makers. That in itself is one of the most valuable aspects of this album. Muddy Waters’ voice is well suited for the temper of the blues. It has an authenticity that translates the mostly masculine emotions in relatable topical settings. In singing these songs, Muddy Waters occasionally drops the meter, requiring the band to add extra beats (e.g. “I Got My Brand On You” at 1:04), but the ensemble seems so used to this that they're able to work through it flawlessly. That’s what bluesmen do. Also, At Newport 1960 unfortunately hides the guitar in the mix. If you really want to hear a mature Muddy Waters on lead guitar, listen to After The Rain (1969), tracks 3, 5, 6, and 8. (By 1969, of course, he had been surpassed in his blues guitar skills by many of those he had influenced early on, including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Johnny Winter, Duane Allman, and a host of others.) But we have to strain to hear his skills on this album. But if you really, really want to hear the genius of Muddy Waters as a guitarist, you must listen to The Complete Plantation Recordings: The Historic 1941-1942 Library of Congress Field Recordings (Chess Records release, 1993). This album, with its fascinating interviews, would be a much better choice for 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die (if it’s not already included). If the mood in the live performance At Newport 1960 seems subdued, it might be related to the fact that Ray Charles’ set the previous evening was disrupted by a drunken riot prompting a police response that included: (1) water hoses, (2) tear gas, and (3) the calling of the National Guard, (4) the Marines and (5) the U.S. Navy Shore Patrol, with 200 arrests and 160 injured. Seriously. This was Newport Rhode Island, folks. Somebody besides Muddy Waters had his mojo workin’. If for no other reason than its historical significance, this record is well worth a listen. 3/5

When I get blues albums on this list, I always find that I tend to enjoy them, despite the fact that I don't think of myself as much of a blues guy. This sounds like it would have been a really fun concert, and reading about the historical context was interesting as well 4/5

Feels like the definition of Blues
I am familiar with Muddy Waters' name, but I couldn't tell you what his signature songs are or if I have heard them. The album was good enough. I've heard a version of "Got My Mojo Working", but I'm not sure if it was Waters or someone else. "Got My Mojo Working" and "I Feel So Good" were the highlights for me. I'd spin this record again.
Could do with listening to it a bit more, but enjoyed it. You can really hear that that whole style really started with him..

A rip roaring album that showcases how damn good Muddy Waters was. It’s got grit, it’s got amazing solos hell it even boogies and I don’t know what else you’d want from a blues album.

The blues ate not my thing. This album does have more going for it than your typical blues guitar album. It's got the feel of a jazz album the piano seems as important as the guitar. But every instrument takes a back seat to Muddy Waters vocal performance. I may well have fou d my favorite blues album. 4.5 🌟

Ascoltare il live di Muddy Waters è stata un'esperienza molto piacevole. (C'è anche il video dello stesso concerto su YouTube e merita di essere visto). Allora, di base a me il blues piace, ma, come spesso accade in questi casi, dopo un po' mi scoccio. In questo caso però, c'è stato l'attenuante del live che gli ha dato quel qualcosa di magico in più: un 3.5 che va a 4. (Comunque non me la sarei sentita di dargli 3).

Quando arriva lo chef che te fa la carbonara non capisci, è bona sì ma alla fine sembra la tua o quella dell'osteria sotto casa. Però fatto sta che te la magneresti pure tutti i giorni. Il blues è la carbonara e Muddy Waters è lo chef.
Il primo pezzo con questo testo fortemente da maschio anni 50 devo ammettere che mi ha mal disposto e ci sono voluti due ascolti e mezzo per farmela passare. Per il resto è un bel album blues che ha molta energia e i musicisti a supporto mi sono piaciuti molto. E' un disco da 3.5, che stavo per punire con un 3 ma mentre scrivevo ho sentito "Got My mojo working pt2" e metto 4.

Het is een live album, dus Muddy Waters is hier meteen al in het nadeel. Verder wel aangenaam.

The early 60s seems like a bizarre time. A young, liberal JFK is elected and living the glamorous, innocent Camelot life. The most popular song was "Theme From A Summer Place" an orchestral instrumental that sounds like a housewife on valium walking to Mervins. In this context Muddy At Newport must've sounded like raucous satan worship. In 2021, not so much, with one exception - there's a moment about 1 minute in to "Feel So Good" where people in the crowd start yelling and for a moment you can hear the energy in the room and feel how it felt to be there live 80 years ago. I think I want live blues to feel like the scene in Black Snake Moan where Samuel L Jackson is doing that Mississippi hill country blues thing and beat up Christina Ricci is sexy dancing with all the men and women at the juke joint. But instead this was At Newport. C-
Surprised by my response to this. After the last blues based snoozer I was cynical. But surprisingly found myself to enjoy this quite a bit. You can see the roots of rock and hear a few covers. It seems like a show I would’ve enjoyed watching. The up tempo brightness in “I’ve Got My Mojo Workin’” was what put it over the top for me. (And it turned out it was only 9 songs, and the last 4 were bonus track versions of the same songs). 3 or 4.
The waters are getting muddy and I'm digging it. More enjoyable album than the first this website served up. Though nowhere near as exciting as that track Matt texted us.

Así que sonaba, ponle tú, Hacer el Amor con Otro mientras la italoamericana Grande hacia muecas y rictus de sufrimiento junto con sus bailarines. Creo que hay camino que puede ser trazado sin pedos entre Muddy Waters y Ariana Grande. He ahí un gran libro. En fin, Ariana Grande me deprime más que los bombardeos "israelíes" sobre Palestina.

"I've got my mojo working", gran canción, divertida, energética, percusiones fuertes y entretenido su in crescendo en 2 partes. De lo demás no sé que más comentar, más que fue disfrutable la escucha en general. Buena variedad entre lo movidito y lo melancólico. Mood: quiero romper una guitarra al final de Tiger in your Tank.

The Best of mundo waters
Brilliant, despite it being a series of fairly straight blues performances this sounds fantastic. Blues being so formulaic at times, often it's a case of not what one plays, but how one does it; and Waters oozes charisma. Big boy music, played with authority and panache. Makes a lot of what we listen to sound quite juvenile, don't it?
I was very hesitant to listen to this album because the title suggests it is a live album. Sure enough it was one and I just don't subscribe to the idea that these live albums should be on this list. I feel like for any live album the review is basically "this is a live album...they are performing songs from another album, just live". I'll leave my review at that (don't get me wrong, Muddy Waters kicks Who's ass).

Una vez más, no sé bien qué decir por el género, pero se oye que todos se la pasaban bomba. Y eso me parece lindo, cómo la gente conecta con la música que disfruta. O sea, también pienso que hay mucho talento, claro y si bien no se me hace distintiva la voz de Muddy Waters (quizá ya dije una tontería), me agrada en general. Creo que la canción que más disfruté fue "I've Got My Mojo Working". Y pues eso, qué legado dejaron los afroamericanos, sin duda. 8/10

Classic rock and roll. Historically important, I'm sure, but not especially entertaining to my ears.
Really enjoyed this, also has "Baby, please don't go" which is a fantastic song (in Archer).
Love to see Muddy Waters on the list, a true blues legend. Very obviously the progenitor of the blues-rock style that launched copycat acts like the Stones, Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin to their early success. To quote Chance the Rapper: "I got the Chicago blues. We invented rock before the Stones got through." The "we" in that lyric refers to Muddy Waters. I'm not too bothered by this being a live album, considering that a lot of Muddy's best work preceded the album format entirely. I do wish we had certain hits on here like "Rolling Stone" and "Mannish Boy," but these are still great selections. He's got such a fantastic voice for this kind of music, and all the musicians kill it, especially the harmonica, shout out to James Cotton. Really dug this one. Favorite tracks: I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man, Meanest Woman, Soon Forgotten, Goodbye Newport Blues. Album art: A simple picture of Muddy Waters, likely taken at the show. It's a great shot though, great color contrast. You can tell he means business. 4/5
Blues.. Should be cross-linked in the dictionary under 'Repitition'. I get that he is doing a live performance and there are people listening, ready to throw stuff in case he sucks. But that doesn't make it more enjoyable. At first I thought he might be a bit slow in the head, or maybe that he's stuttering. But that just seems to be his way of singing? Really couldn't get into it. A few times he just stopped singing and apparently shook his head like a rabid animal making strange noises. And when he noticed the audience responded to one of his songs more than before, he just repeated it - that felt so cheap. But who am I to judge? The audience seemed to like it, so maybe the perception of music shifted over the decades. Two stars, didn't really care for it.
Live Blues
I had a good time with this. Just having that little bit of audience interaction makes a world of difference in how I receive this kind of music. “When it was all said and done, the water may have been muddy… but the good times were clear.” - Me writing a review of this show for my local newspaper.
Generally enjoy blues, and this was fine. But rather samey!! I reckon this is music you have to listen to live to get the real experience

Ich mag Blues. Ich find es schade, dass es ein Live Album ist, die Aufnahme ist halt nicht so richtig rund, ist aber auch von 1960. Grundlegend ist es immer dasselbe, so ist Blues halt irgendwo angelegt, das stört mich eher weniger. Gefällt mir an sich gut, die eher weniger gute Aufnahme stört mich aber ein bisschen.
If you are not REALLY into blues, every song in this album will sound the same very quickly.

I liked this album, but I usually like the 60s albums so not really a surprise. I will admit that I got a little annoyed by the repeat of some songs, but that’s partially my whole not loving live concert albums.

Enjoyed this. Effortless swing, the interplay between the harmonica, piano and bass is a joy. Muddy Waters ties it all together with his deep, rich voice. Will definitely be listening to this again.
