Just not my kind of thing, or I wasn’t in the mood for it

Not my style, but I can appreciate the vibe of the sound. A bit simplistic for my taste but I can see how lots of music development came from this.

2/5. This album was all over the place when it comes to track listing, hence the 2 star rating, but how can you knock the great Muddy Waters. I can clearly see where Jimi got plenty of inspiration.

Muddy Waters, muddy recording. He had a lovely voice and I could imagine not minding hearing this at a festival in 1960. In fact, I'd probably be beside myself. But now, I don't know.

I like the blues but this wasn't blue and gruff enough.

Was looking for something kind of quiet and thought this would work. It's a pretty good blues album. Nothing particularly mind blowing. The final song was by far the best with its more jazzy feel. 2

Highlights: "I've Got My Mojo Working," "Goodbye Newport Blues," "Tiger in Your Tank," "Soon Forgotten" 1960 is one of the greatest years in the entire history of all music ever made anywhere. After 100 years of blues music, its traditions had developed into world-historic, paradigm-shattering jazz compositions. So this all belies the pretended importance of Live in Newport as "the first electric blues record." You can hear from the audience, and from Waters, that the blues was alive, but this album had so much precedent, and was surrounded by superior and transcendent work that engaged with its same ideas. Just not up there in a list of all-time albums as far as I can tell.

Middle kinda I enjoy the grooveyness but past that it’s not something I’m going to listen to again probably and it’s no where near as bad as the last blues album I listened to

I found this to be a fairly straightforward live blues album. His voice is great, the instrumentation is solid but not outstanding, and the crowd involvement is ok but nothing special. That also goes for this album in general; nothing special. It was a decent album to listen to but I don’t listen to much blues music and this live album wasn’t special enough for its inclusion in my opinion.

Muddy waters is a great musician, but this was a live album and it did not deliver as live albums often do. Apologies, Mr. Mud. Each song was good, but sounded very similar to the previous. 2/5

It's very bluesy. As one might expect. If you enjoy blues music recorded quite badly, this will be right up your street.

As much as I respect the blues, I'm just not that into the straight blues genre. It's a cool record and I can see how it influenced a ton of music in the 20th century... but there's only so much 1-4-5 a man can take.

This is one of those artists that I think I'm "supposed to like" but I just don't. I generally don't like blues. It's too slow and it's hard to sell me on almost anything that uses a harmonica. This album isn't excruciating. When the tempo picks up on songs like Tiger In Your Tank and I Got My Mojo Working it's not bad at all, but too much is just slow and a little samey to my ears. Muddy isn't a bad singer and certainly isn't a slouch with the guitar, but this just isn't for me. I suppose I get why others might like it but I'm just not into this.

I think I liked the studio versions of the songs better than the live ones. I've heard of him before, but it was nice to listen to more. I'll probably pick a couple songs off of it.

I'm not a big fan of straight blues, so this record didn't do much for me. I enjoyed the songs well enough while it played, but nothing really stuck out to me and overall it is kind of forgettable.

A testament to how Muddy Waters was influential was the fact that this album sounds like I’ve heard a thousand times except for the fact that all songs bar one I’ve never heard before. However this is a double edged sword - coming late to Muddy Waters this sounds tired to me precisely because I heard him through a hundred other artists. Also this specific album is not a mind blowing live performance and it’s neither the most remarkable in general - yet this still, even as a throwaway album, surpasses the vast majority of the white boy blues albums trying their best on this list. Maybe it will be another album to win me over I guess. This one kind of was rather neutral.

It’s okay, not my preferred music.

This Muddy Waters album was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island on July 3rd 1960. Muddy Waters was one of the most popular blues artists of the 1950s, so it's no surprise his band was playing at this festival. However this day of the festival was almost cancelled after a riot the night before, but the promoter convinced the city council to let it continue. Because of this decision, we now have a piece of blues history recorded live! The blues music is the older Chicago style, but that's what makes it so unique. It sounds like Muddy Waters was performing in a cool, relaxed way, when there are reports that the audience absolutely loved his music and were all dancing. The recording was well done too, since we can hear all the individual instruments, as well as the powerful baritone voice of Muddy Waters. If you are a fan of blues music, then this is one album you can't miss!

Ehhh... heard better live albums.

While it warmed dusty parts of my road trip , I couldn’t get past the very repetitive trill on the harmonica which was always the same note through the whole album

The early 60s seems like a bizarre time. A young, liberal JFK is elected and living the glamorous, innocent Camelot life. The most popular song was "Theme From A Summer Place" an orchestral instrumental that sounds like a housewife on valium walking to Mervins. In this context Muddy At Newport must've sounded like raucous satan worship. In 2021, not so much, with one exception - there's a moment about 1 minute in to "Feel So Good" where people in the crowd start yelling and for a moment you can hear the energy in the room and feel how it felt to be there live 80 years ago. I think I want live blues to feel like the scene in Black Snake Moan where Samuel L Jackson is doing that Mississippi hill country blues thing and beat up Christina Ricci is sexy dancing with all the men and women at the juke joint. But instead this was At Newport. C-

Classic rock and roll. Historically important, I'm sure, but not especially entertaining to my ears.

Blues.. Should be cross-linked in the dictionary under 'Repitition'. I get that he is doing a live performance and there are people listening, ready to throw stuff in case he sucks. But that doesn't make it more enjoyable. At first I thought he might be a bit slow in the head, or maybe that he's stuttering. But that just seems to be his way of singing? Really couldn't get into it. A few times he just stopped singing and apparently shook his head like a rabid animal making strange noises. And when he noticed the audience responded to one of his songs more than before, he just repeated it - that felt so cheap. But who am I to judge? The audience seemed to like it, so maybe the perception of music shifted over the decades. Two stars, didn't really care for it.

It's kind of expected that this sort of music treats its lyrical content as an afterthought, but here things are so dire that if I didn't know better I'd think I was being mocked. Like I'm being dared to sing Ive Got My Brand On You to myself in the self checkout queue at Tesco. Ditto with Hoochie Coochie Man - what the hell is the point of any of this? If you're telling me this is all about the musicianship then fine, but you can't also tell me there arent thousands of other people in midcentury America that have made this exact record, or that you couldnt go to Blues night down at your local and hear pretty much the same thing. Please, no more blues.

Slightly emotional 1 since this album is so far away from the vibe I want right now after just having gone through a significant life event that it’s in a different time zone. Also a much weaker live album than others of the era (shout out Jerry Lee Lewis). Low energy, but I guess that’s just the genre. The other Muddy albums I’ve heard so far from the list were much better than this too

Live AND blues??? I almost just outright skipped this, but then that wouldn't have been true to this challenge - which is becoming exponentially more challenging by the day... As expected, this was dreadful. Simply repeating the title of the song is NOT good music.

I'm pretty sick of live albums on the list and this one did nothing to differentiate itself. It started out as run of the mill, squeaky blues from the 60's and ended up being repetitive and completely missable. I couldn't tell one song from the next, all were "Soon Forgotten." 1.15.

I don't have much to say about Muddy Waters or At Newport 1960. It's obviously a very forgettable album as I just finished listening to it and can't tell you anything about it. It was passive background music that didn't strike or chord and stand out in any way (good or bad). I'm sure there's some historical significance but none of it translated or remained relevant 65 years later. At least it was relatively short I guess. 1.02 stars

While I do have an affinity for Muddy Waters, it's primarily during his later, more electrified recordings. But mainly, you can hear the wind as a low rumbling in the recording, which really distracts from the music.

I'm sure it was good at the time or if you love the blues, but for me there's nothing special about this. We know about blues. it's a bit basic and not very interesting or even enjoyable.

i love this style of music but even the first song “i’ve got my brand on you” reflects the disgusting misogyny and mistreatment of women at this time, which very much rubs me the wrong way. He refers to his girlfriend/wife as a fish that he got his hooks into and reeled out of the water.
