Diciamo che il blues non è che mi faccia impazzire... Mi sembra tutte noiose/lamentose uguali. Ma non penso siano brutte, nel senso, capisco che fa quel che fa bene, solo che non fa tanto per me.

It’s okay, not my preferred music.

This Muddy Waters album was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island on July 3rd 1960. Muddy Waters was one of the most popular blues artists of the 1950s, so it's no surprise his band was playing at this festival. However this day of the festival was almost cancelled after a riot the night before, but the promoter convinced the city council to let it continue. Because of this decision, we now have a piece of blues history recorded live! The blues music is the older Chicago style, but that's what makes it so unique. It sounds like Muddy Waters was performing in a cool, relaxed way, when there are reports that the audience absolutely loved his music and were all dancing. The recording was well done too, since we can hear all the individual instruments, as well as the powerful baritone voice of Muddy Waters. If you are a fan of blues music, then this is one album you can't miss!

Ehhh... heard better live albums.

While it warmed dusty parts of my road trip , I couldn’t get past the very repetitive trill on the harmonica which was always the same note through the whole album

good enough bg music but eh.. nothing stood out to me.

Possibly revolutionary in its day, nowadays sounds vulgar, a generic blues album.

The early 60s seems like a bizarre time. A young, liberal JFK is elected and living the glamorous, innocent Camelot life. The most popular song was "Theme From A Summer Place" an orchestral instrumental that sounds like a housewife on valium walking to Mervins. In this context Muddy At Newport must've sounded like raucous satan worship. In 2021, not so much, with one exception - there's a moment about 1 minute in to "Feel So Good" where people in the crowd start yelling and for a moment you can hear the energy in the room and feel how it felt to be there live 80 years ago. I think I want live blues to feel like the scene in Black Snake Moan where Samuel L Jackson is doing that Mississippi hill country blues thing and beat up Christina Ricci is sexy dancing with all the men and women at the juke joint. But instead this was At Newport. C-

Classic rock and roll. Historically important, I'm sure, but not especially entertaining to my ears.

Blues.. Should be cross-linked in the dictionary under 'Repitition'. I get that he is doing a live performance and there are people listening, ready to throw stuff in case he sucks. But that doesn't make it more enjoyable. At first I thought he might be a bit slow in the head, or maybe that he's stuttering. But that just seems to be his way of singing? Really couldn't get into it. A few times he just stopped singing and apparently shook his head like a rabid animal making strange noises. And when he noticed the audience responded to one of his songs more than before, he just repeated it - that felt so cheap. But who am I to judge? The audience seemed to like it, so maybe the perception of music shifted over the decades. Two stars, didn't really care for it.

Interesting to hear from a historical perspective, as a snapshot of what was going on in 1960 You can certainly hear some of the influences that were passed down to Hendrix and the Stones But in 2026, I'm never going to reach for this album

It's kind of expected that this sort of music treats its lyrical content as an afterthought, but here things are so dire that if I didn't know better I'd think I was being mocked. Like I'm being dared to sing Ive Got My Brand On You to myself in the self checkout queue at Tesco. Ditto with Hoochie Coochie Man - what the hell is the point of any of this? If you're telling me this is all about the musicianship then fine, but you can't also tell me there arent thousands of other people in midcentury America that have made this exact record, or that you couldnt go to Blues night down at your local and hear pretty much the same thing. Please, no more blues.

A difficult listen. Time has rendered the blues the most formulaic and stale of music genres. There’s simply nothing here to get excited about. Sorry Muddy!

Slightly emotional 1 since this album is so far away from the vibe I want right now after just having gone through a significant life event that it’s in a different time zone. Also a much weaker live album than others of the era (shout out Jerry Lee Lewis). Low energy, but I guess that’s just the genre. The other Muddy albums I’ve heard so far from the list were much better than this too

Live AND blues??? I almost just outright skipped this, but then that wouldn't have been true to this challenge - which is becoming exponentially more challenging by the day... As expected, this was dreadful. Simply repeating the title of the song is NOT good music.

I'm pretty sick of live albums on the list and this one did nothing to differentiate itself. It started out as run of the mill, squeaky blues from the 60's and ended up being repetitive and completely missable. I couldn't tell one song from the next, all were "Soon Forgotten." 1.15.

I don't have much to say about Muddy Waters or At Newport 1960. It's obviously a very forgettable album as I just finished listening to it and can't tell you anything about it. It was passive background music that didn't strike or chord and stand out in any way (good or bad). I'm sure there's some historical significance but none of it translated or remained relevant 65 years later. At least it was relatively short I guess. 1.02 stars

"I put a tiger in your tank" what in the stupidest goddamn shit is this? "Got my moBRPPPRPPRPPRHRPRRHjo working!" - good on you, bud, just shut the fuck up now, please. Stupid repetitive garbage, not surprising this "jazz" thing went out of style.

While I do have an affinity for Muddy Waters, it's primarily during his later, more electrified recordings. But mainly, you can hear the wind as a low rumbling in the recording, which really distracts from the music.

Yeah. It's fine. Would've been fun to listen to when it was edgy, now it's just old.

I'm sure it was good at the time or if you love the blues, but for me there's nothing special about this. We know about blues. it's a bit basic and not very interesting or even enjoyable.

i love this style of music but even the first song “i’ve got my brand on you” reflects the disgusting misogyny and mistreatment of women at this time, which very much rubs me the wrong way. He refers to his girlfriend/wife as a fish that he got his hooks into and reeled out of the water.

My six year old daughter 10 seconds in “I hate it. Turn it off” Can’t say I thought it much better, but I kinda understand where it fits in musical history, which is so very much not my time.

Oldie but needed more variety of music. Not that special tbh.
