Reviews (page 5 of 14)
Having all these tracks on the same album is objectively wild
Beat It
Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, Pretty Young Thing - half the album is a Michael Jackson greatest hits playlist. Honestly, the genre isn’t my favorite, but some of these songs are so entrenched in the cultural zeitgeist that it’s hard not to enjoy them - Thriller makes me think of Halloween, and I’ve heard Beat It in more contexts than I can remember. The rest of the songs are nothing special, but they don’t drag the album down.
Favourite tracks - Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, Thriller, Billie Jean
Superb. Michael was a superstar already of course, but this just elevated him to a whole new level. You know you're onto something good when you can release seven singles off an album and they all thunder into the top end of the charts without breaking sweat. Top, top album; here's five stars!
I'm trying to catch up here, so I won't drag this on. This album rocks. The first time I ever heard Michael Jackson (adult) was when I played Beat It on Guitar Hero 4. My parents are old, man. This album gets better and better the more you've spent on a good set of headphones or speakers. Fortunately, I have both. It's not Off the Wall, however, and Human Nature has never been my cup of tea. Those are my only criticisms. Billie Jean is the most important MJ song (everyone knows this) and so it should be!
Geniales los videoclips y canciones inolvidables
Timeless
Legendary album. Nearly every song is a banger
Iconic pop album of the 80's. So many good songs on this album. Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, PYT. And even the non-hits are good. Michael was the king of pop. When I was a kid, this was THE album to listen to. And it still holds up as good music. My Rating: 5/5
I mean legitmitely one of the greatest albums ever. Just top to bottom. So complete, so epic. Quincy and Mike are at the tippy fuckin top of their game here and it shows from every which way. I bought this vinyl at a coffee shop/brewery in Brooklyn years ago for $4 and it's absolutely in the top 10 most spun records in my apartment. A true masterpiece of an album. What more is there to say?
GOAT album by one of the greatest to ever do it. 5/5 solely based on the music and production. Michael himself gets a 0/5 for **allegedly** diddling those kids.
Wonderful album from an epic performer.
P.Y.T. is the best song on the album, fight me
Beat It is een prachtig voorbeeld. Eigenlijk is dit natuurlijk een beetje zeuren. Terecht zeuren wellicht.
Winner
In the middle of this album there's the 3-track run of "Thriller," "Beat It," and "Billie Jean," which is just an incredibly strong sequence. All iconic pieces of 80s pop music. Aside from those greats I also like "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)." The other 5 tracks on Thriller, I didn't seem to recognize. The song "Thriller" is its own beast - basically doomed to stick out out like a sore, rotting thumb on anything short of a full Halloween album. It's so iconic and well-known I think it's easy to overlook how very good it is, and it has one of the all-time great music videos as well. Every Halloween our neighbor across the street sets up his turntables in his driveway and DJs a dance party for the hundreds of trick-or-treaters we get on our street; "Thriller" is basically the cornerstone of that setlist. The Vincent Price dialog helps seal it as best-in-class; there simply isn't another voice that could compete with that delivery. Is it my favorite spooky pop song? No, but it's very good and I bet most people would struggle to name anything else after it and the Ghostbusters theme.
Incredible album. Like every single song is a hit. MJ was a master songwriter and performer.
unforgetable
I'd rather listen to Trillah by Easy Star...
the "mine" songs are such crap that I almost rated it a 3 .... rest of the album is power. Incredible star power for old people
come on. you would be lying through your teeth if you dissed this album in any way shape or form. would i call this the perfect album? if it isn't, it's certainly close. hit after hit after hit, and even michael's "filler songs" are of an unmatched quality as well. truth be told it was very hard for me to personally pick a favorite out of this album. this album i've listened to ever since i was in single-digits, and i feel like as time goes on, the more i listen to it the more i MARVEL at how fantastic michael's writing (as well as quincy jone's production) is. his music transcends time. people have, can, and will study his music for centuries in the same way that the likes of bach and mozart have. he's just THAT good.
Its an absolute classic, you cant help but love MJ. Favourite song on the album is 'Human Nature' or 'The Girl is Mine' because gotta love Paul McCartney!
Classic MJ. Likes: Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, Human Nature, PYT, all of the songs really.
Just a stone cold classic.
One of my favorite albums!
I have mixed feelings on this one. This is undoubtedly a classic album. It was commercially successful with seven singles. The musicians who performed on this album played perfectly. The recording is clear as a bell. The production is remarkable. It’s pretty much a perfect pop album. There really isn’t a bad song on this album. The downside for me is it is too perfect. The production is almost clinical in execution. Some of the songs are incredible: “Beat It” and “Billie Jean” come to mind. On the other hand, there’s “The Girl Is Mine” with the ludicrous discussion between Jackson and McCartney about who the girl loves more. Michael Jackson was a massive talent despite the personal goings on that came out toward the end of his career and after he passed away. In the end, I have to give credit where credit is due and separate his personal life from his recordings. 9/10 for me.
Thriller.
My wife and I, of course, each brought our own Thriller LP into our marriage. Listening to this front-to-back for the first time in years, I am re-astounded at just how great it is. There are some admitted weaknesses, e.g., "The Girl Is Mine," but if you chose "Wanna Be Starting Something" over "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" as Michael Jackson's best song, I wouldn't argue. Hard to overstate the seismic impact this had on early 80s American pop culture, particularly on previously lily-white MTV. My high school best friend still has his "Thriller"-esque red leather jacket, which he says he wants to be buried in. Check your hipster goggles at the door and don't pretend that you're too cool for this record.
A classic
Every song a killer … 'Cause this is Thriller! I thought I knew every single thing about Michael Jackson, and this album, but was so pleased to watch the HBO “dockumentary” “Yacht Rock” and learn that Steve Porcaro gave him “Human Nature” to finish out the album. My favorite track, outside of “PYT”
UN 5 YIIIHIII
Huge fan!
MJ!! The king of pop! I was just telling Chris the other day that I was looking forward to getting a Michael album. This one had some classics on it but gave me a look into some of his slower love songs that I hadn’t heard. His depiction of love is beautiful and passionate and his voice is nostalgic. Ironically the song Thriller is my least favorite lol
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' The Girl Is Mine Thriller Beat It Billie Jean Human Nature P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)
Great album
own
FUCKING PHENOMENAL. ALWAYS A BANGER. THE DOG GONE GIRL IS MINE
It's a classic, no questions 5. The songs are so overplayed but who cares, they're great.
An absolutely excellent album cover to cover. Virtually flawless.
Truly one of the best albums of all time. Thriller into Beat It into Billie Jean is untouchable
Simply the best but I actually like Bad a little more
One of the few albums that don need a listen before rating it with 5 stars. The Listen was still a joy from start to finish and proofed it more than ever that hes an all time great. Delivery, Production, Cover... its soooo good
Ok, 5 sulla fiducia
Banger.
93/100. The best-selling album of all time obviously won’t disappoint. Thriller by Michael Jackson is one of the greatest pop records ever made, packed with iconic tracks that have stood the test of time. Having songs like "Thriller," "Beat It," and "Billie Jean" back-to-back-to-back is truly unprecedented. The production is flawless, the performances are electrifying, and the album's influence on pop music is undeniable.
ONE OF THE BEST ALBUM EVER!!!!
The best Michael Jackson album? Quite possibly.
9/10
Separate the art from the artist. Having a hard time doing it here.
I've never listed to this album, even though i know all the songs! And it's a brilliant album A classic 5 stars for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Off the Wall" gefällt mir besser.
One of the best albums. Ever.
Solid. Fun vibes
hot take: this is an excellent album. I never listened to it on purpose before but knew all the songs
An album with nothing but hits
The best-selling album of all time has most likely become a tough sell to many people, myself included. And yet, its nine songs stick around for good reason. Most ingenious is 'Billie Jean,' which fronts a literacy viz-a-viz creative rhythms and inventive melodies. Even 'Beat It,' which I never loved, is 'funky and strong' enuf to endure. Human nature is real, however, and as much as you'd like to separate the art from the artist, it would seem that appreciation at a distance is the most sustainable approach. But that distance is hard to preserve knowing 'PYT' is out there, a perfect track.
Fantastic album.
[9/10]
Everything aside, great albim
I’ve wrestled with my thoughts on Michael Jackson for the whole of the 1001. But I’ve gotta finally review his three albums. Can they be separated from the complicated and controversial man? No. And they probably shouldn’t be. His life story, and the music industry’s role in it, is just as important to understand as the way he (and Quincy Jones) transformed pop and R&B music. I don’t want to blame everything on his father, or missing out on a normal childhood, or the pressure of stardom, or anything else. But it is important context to understand Jackson, and to understand his music too. The three albums on the list encompass the end of his childhood and emergence as a force not seen in pop music since The Beatles. Overall, best when MJ is intense and/or angry, and that can be found all over “Thriller.” It’s got a very cohesive identity, practically a concept album. It’s just out of order. And maybe it’s the wrong format? “MJ: The Musical” came out a few years ago, but I think it was the wrong MJ musical. A supernatural horror “Thriller” musical would be really interesting. Re-order the songs (“Thriller” should be the final or penultimate song). Throw in several “Bad” songs that fit, and you could have a pretty cool tale of love, rivalries, and spooks. Uses Michael’s music without being about the very complicated and controversial person. Aside from that clearly very brilliant idea that someone should make tons of money on, “Thriller” is also Jackson’s best album. It was an incredible transformation from his 70s sound, the most successful and definitive pop album of the 80s, and transcends the artist himself.
Peak MJ. Back when MJ meant Michael Jackson not Michael Jordan. Back before MJ went…sideways. I love Billie Jean. There was a tennis coach that looked like Billie Jean King. Her doubles team was kicking our ass. Down a set and like 3 or 4 nothing in the second, my partner and I won a point and started singing Billie Jean. We kept singing BJ after each winning point and rode that train all the way back to victory. Glorious, glorious victory.
This is peak MJ and Quincy Jones. An absolute banger.
Classic
Very few albums are stacked with hits like “Thriller.” At least 6 huge songs on this album are among the best pop songs ever recorded. And they don’t age. They still instantly work their way into your brain and make you move even if your brain is like, “But wait wasn’t Michael Jackson a horr— 🎵 gotta be startin’ something… 🎶” Quincy Jones’s production is incredible. There are a lot of layers but they meld perfectly into an infectious funky pop style. “The Girl is Mine” is one of those songs I love to make fun of. Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney both sound cheesy on it and that spoken word portion where they playfully argue always makes me laugh. They have no chemistry together. Like, based on this song, I can’t imagine either of them getting the girl. My favorite here has got to be “Beat It.” What an incredible track. Those synth-gong hits at the beginning? Amazing. And the electric guitar… it’s basically a hard rock song. A little extra magic in that one.
Thriller baby! One of the greatest albums of all time by one of the best performers ever. What a joy to get this one on a Friday. I find it really interesting that the title track has less plays on Spotify than "Beat It" and "Billie Jean". I think "Thriller" is one of the most famous songs ever, and when I think of MJ I think of that song. I wonder if times have changed a bit though and younger people / people who stream music have moved away from that song because it definitely has been overplayed on the radio for decades. "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" are truly amazing as well, I don't mean to take anything away from them. MJ was really one in a billion and he transcends music. These tunes are more than just pieces of music, they are entertainment in a whole different paradigm; like they are more visually rich than just pieces of music, they are more audibly interesting than a dance or piece of performance art. I heard this story once about how he never really played any instruments, but he would write songs by singing out parts, like humming a bass and drumset groove and then some producers would scramble to get them down on tape before he started moving on to vocals. Crazy brilliant stuff. I love the album cover- he looks great, the black and white is classy with the little leopard print pocket square, and the camera bloom effect makes him appear ethereal.
5.0
My absolute favorite album, ever! I love every single song. ♥️
Beat it really slaps. The song with Paul McCartney is...off. PYT was good.
I mean cmon, it's thriller.
Would have been five without that nonce being on it, what a cunt McCartney is
An instant hit as it should be!
Love it
a classic
Toujours agréable à écouter. Compo très sympa
It's just wall to wall hits. My only gripe with Thriller are: i) Paul McCartney isn't the right for The Girl Is Mine, and ii) the album title doesn't really fit with the vibe - Thriller is an outlier. Aside from that it's pretty perfect.
This album is what you call middle loaded, from the title track to PYT you don’t get much better. Like if course MJ is at best a bit strange and at worse a full blown nonce but he has talent 5/5
he still definitely touched those kids
Loved this album since its release. It's like a greatest hits album
This is the first record I ever had that was solely mine and not shared with my parents. I realize that there's so much that's squinky about MJ, but this album is an absolute banger, start to finish.
obra prima
Highlights of a tremendous career
I already have this album as an LP. It it truly a great album and one that will maintain to be considered one of the best. It is a record full of amazing hits that are still sung today. In my opinion it was the album that made Michael Jackson THE Michael Jackson!
awesomehead album
billie jeannn
It’s an obvious 5*s isn’t it?
It's Thriller. There's a reason why it's the best-selling album of all time: it's well produced by the legend Quincy Jones and spares no time for filler ("The Girl is Mine" is debatable on that front).
A classic.
This album is a 5. Every song jams. There are so many hits it's hard to tell if there is a single song that wasn't a hit back in the day. Hard to pick a favorite, but PYT is right there. It's the perfect roller rink song.
If you don't love Michael Jackson's Thriller album, you are desperately on a soapbox trying to push some agenda; or in his own words, "You just want to be startin' somethin'." A perfect infusion of pop, R&B, disco, and dance, with some metal guitar shredding and African-inspired chanting thrown in for good measure, all performed with pure excitement. They captured lightning in a bottle. A Greatest Hits album would need almost every track on Thriller to be complete. There's good reason that this album is still the best selling album worldwide. If I HAD to be critical, the synths can be a bit dated in their sound at times, especially when applied to the bass ("Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'"), but the resulting overall feel and groove more than make up for it. There are so many great songs and variations here, that it's hard to praise any one song over any other, but you'd be wrong to overlook "Human Nature"'s greatness in the shadow of the bigger hits.
What an album! This is exactly the type of album that is a good fit for this project for me, because believe it or not, I never actually sat down and listened to this as an album, front to back. This project gives me the push to do just that, long overdue. Granted, just about every song here was a single, so I've heard at least 80% of it many times before, but there were a few songs here I had never heard before, or at least don't remember having heard before. And also, I think there is something to be said about listening to a song and it's original context. For instance, I had no idea that human nature was from this album. The fact that so many absolute bangers are all together in one album is so impressive. Listening to them all back to back, I couldn't help but be awed by what was accomplished here. I was contemplating how much of these tracks' success was down to Michael and how much was down to Quincy, not to mention all the other talented musicians involved (including Paul McCartney and Eddie Van Halen?!). I think in the end I can only conclude that the combination of Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones was magic. Quincy Jones was a genius at composing and producing, and Michael was a genius at performing--how awesome that they collaborated so much. These songs still hit hard. I listened to this in the gym, and when "Beat It" came on, it gave me renewed energy to attack my nemesis, the lateral shoulder machine. Despite having heard this song so many times before (and also Weird Al's "Eat It" lol), it was just pure dopamine, as I was the star in my very own '80s movie exercise montage. All-time classic!
Another masterpiece by the law firm of Jones and Jackson. All songs on this album are all killer no filler.......or should say.....all Thriller no filler (I had to). There's just not a lot that sounds like this album, and it has stood the test of time The right combinations of everything were put into this album and so much thought to create an album that sounds danceable yet cinematic. Wanna Be Start Something is really a testament of what can be done with just one riff. The whole song is literally one riff for 6 minutes. Usually I would get bored or annoyed with something like that but Michael and Quincy take you through a music lesson in adding and subtracting parts. That song is a clinic. What's even crazier is that I think Beat It and the title track Thriller overshadow Wanna Be Starting Something... that's how good this album is. RIP Quincy, Michael and Eddie Van Halen....one of the greatest albums of all time.
Incredible album, full of hits and vibes. Incredible
This album is just nuts, starts off with 2 banger tracks, then a goofy ass duet with fucking PAUL that still works in a super cheesy way, then 3 GIGANTIC hits. Absolute insanity. The 3 after the hits pale in comparison, but they're still well crafted pop tunes sung by the King of Pop. This is a 5 easily. But I still think Off the Wall is MJ's best
Arguably the #1 album of all time?
Cmon
Day 0005/1001 of One Album a Day The song with Paul McCartney is shite but other than its a phenomenal selection of tracks. Beat It remains one of my favourite songs of all time. Fav tracks: Thriller / Beat It / Billie Jean Bad tracks: The Girl Is Mine
Classic
Obvious five.
Well damn!
This album is perfect. There is nothing that I can say that hasn’t been said about this banger of an album.
Its the best selling album in history for a reason, flawless victory.
I love this album so much!!!!! The best album ever!!!!
MJ really put all his eggs in one album and they all made omelettes!!!! thank you michal jackson for being the first and only person to ever have vitiligo album cooks
I wish I could listen to some of the bangers that are overplayed for the first time again. I feel like that would really solidify the 5/5 status. Regardless, 5/5.
I mean its a classic
Houmous & Chutney were invited to Neverland. It was absolutely incredible. We didn’t actually manage to see Michael on that occasion. He used to just get pulled from pillar to post. I think Len maybe spent 4 hours on the carousel with Bubbles. He was acting like he was Richie Rich. 4.5
An iconic album. I am not a huge fan of Michael Jackson, as his music is just so ubiquitous I have only managed to enjoy it on a surface level. Still, this has 9 songs on it and they are all great. I don't know if any album can match tracks 3-8 on here. Just iconic song after iconic song. I don't need to be a huge Michael Jackson fan to know that's an unparalleled run of songs on an album. Not much else to say about this one.
ohh classic !!!
Sure, fine, yeah, whatever.
So classic!
I don’t think anyone who was alive in the 80s could listen to this album without dancing like a fool.
An album that was meant to be all hits. Does it succeed? It doesn't really matter - everything sounds good and the three song run from Thriller through Billie Jean is as good as it gets. The sound of the bass sets a high water mark, especially pulsating on the title track and megahit Billie Jean, but present almost everywhere. If you're not moving at least one part of your body I don't know what to tell you. The slower stuff is good too, especially Human Nature and The Lady in My Life. Surely part of the pop music canon.
it's a classic for a reason. the production here is top notch and holds up extremely well to this day. michael is at his pinnacle and his vocal performances are excellent. what makes this a light 5 for me is the track listing. there are some absolute bangers on here, but there are also some lesser tracks ('the girl is mine' - the lesser of the two paul mccartney and michael jackson collaboration songs - and 'the lady in my life' in particular drag this album a bit down). but look, it's one of the greatest pop stars of all time doing what he does best. it's pretty great!
Michael Jackson was the child of abuse. By all accounts his dad was just a monster. But, people argue, it refined the talent of one of the most influential performers of a generation. Yeah, but, maybe without the damage, he could have been *better*? This album heralds the arrival of the Mozart of our time. Yes, none other than "Weird" Al Yankovich, the true King of Pop.
01) Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - 10,0 02) Baby Be Mine - 9,0 03) The Girl Is Mine - 10,0 04) Thriller - 10,0 05) Beat It - 10,0 06) Billie Jean - 10,0 07) Human Nature - 10,0 08) P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) - 10,0 09) The Lady In My Life - 8,5 TOTAL: 9,72 (97/100) Current ranking: 11/396
This is a really hard one because I think that Lady In My Life aside this is perfect. But also he is a wrongun and I don't want to praise him.
All timer
Stone cold classic! This defined pop music, modern RnB and hip hop together. 80s funk and pop never was any better
Masterpiece!
stone cold classic
this has like two songs that aren't great, but otherwise you could release this at any point in time and it would change the trajectory of human history.
It is sometimes difficult to separate the artist from their work when challenging controversy surrounds them - and lord, does controversy surround MJ. I knew this album was on this list - it had to be - and I was worried about how I was going to feel with the weight of 42 years since its release upon me. I needn’t have worried. Joyously infectious, funky and swagger-filled, heartfelt and poised - it was like I was 7yo at Xmas getting this - my first album ever - again. This is the pinnacle of pop for me. I can only imagine how people were swept up by Elvis or The Beatles at Ground Zero for their arcs. I was captured by this album and the MJ craze that overtook the world. There’s no possible other score that I can give. Every track is a classic. It’s the best album on this list for me.
Best selling album of all time, and deservedly so. A great range of styles appear on this album. Jackson's performance is at his career peak. Quincy Jones' production made it work on a grand scale. There are no mis-hits here. Although Michael later became a caricature, his musicianship was always strong, and this album really showcases it. I definitely didn't appreciate it at the time, but it is an all-time great pop/dance album that changed popular music forever.
World changing album. Absolute banger. Everything about this album is a 5.
lets gooooooo 5/5
well, mis elend lange banger-review het sich irgendwie glöscht und da bini leider chli z gnervt und z fuul s ganze nomal z schriibe. Tons of hits and even the lesser songs are still better than most. Wanna be Startin’ Somethin’ and PYT sound like leftovers from Off the Wall (not a bad thing). I like basically everything on this album except The Girl Is Mine which is a pile of hot garbage. If you ever wondered if Paul McCartney could ever be more schlocky than he was with Wings, listen to The Girl Is Mine. Pure Trash. Remove that song and it’s a nearly perfect album.
Muy bueno
This is a legitimate contender for greatest album of all time. Love love love this, all the way through. QJ and MJ forever
Lives up ro the hype
Come on people, it's Michael Jackson
So good. A couple of weak tracks but the good tracks are so so good. An album that has inspired numerous other musicians. Samples used by Nas, SWV, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, The Prodigy, Kanye West, 2Pac….
Some real classics on this album. A must listen to any music lover.
A perfect record that you can forgive the cringe ‘The Girl is Mine’ for.

Top album.
Overplayed to death but somehow still slays, hate to say it
Overall a good album "hihi". Was number one in sales for years which was never seen before. In terms of sound, the different basslines are just soo epic.
I don't think I can say anything that hasn't been said about this album. Usually I only give 5 stars to albums with absolutely zero skips, but I have to make an exception for this one. I just can't with The Girl Is Mine. 100% a skip. But the run from Thriller through P.Y.T. is actually insane. How do these songs still sound so fresh all these years later? I literally always have to dance or bob along or move in some way when any of these songs (as well as Wanna Be Startin' Somethin') come on. I believe the key to the magic of Michael Jackson's music is that it comes from the heart of a very gifted dancer. That's rare, and it's what makes him one of the true greats.
Great album
4.8 - Yeah this is a great album, so many good tunes
When an album like this comes up my hope is that there will be some hidden gems uncovered. Unfortunately that wasn't my experience here - for me on this listen, the hits are the hits and everything else is fine. Don't get me wrong, that still makes for an unbelievable record - more than half the tracks are undeniable pop classics, and the rest are at least solid songs. Yet it's just a little disappointing to come out of the album experience without really anything new. Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean is a 3 track run that is surely unparalleled in pop. Fave Tracks: Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, P.Y.T 4.5/5
RIP quincy jones. genius.
I mean, it's Thriller, but still; 'Thriller' into 'Beat It' into 'Billie Jean' into 'Human Nature'. Sheesh.
Michael Jackson moonwalks through this entire record and still manages to never make any missteps.
Thriller is one of the greatest albums ever made. There has been some revisionist history on the album; some people say that it’s not as good as its mega-hits or that Off the Wall is better. Off the Wall is also an amazing album, and I will be happy when I listen to it again for this challenge; however, Thriller is on a whole other plane of existence. 1. Wanna be Startin Somethin: one of the best intros ever with an absolutely stunning groove. I also love the background vocals. 2. Baby Be Mine: A really good song that has some killer funky bass, although it’s probably in my bottom 3 for the album. 3. The Girl is Mine: honestly, when I think about this song, I think it’s the black mark on an otherwise generational album. However, when I listen to it, it’s actually just a really pleasant McCartney and MJ collab that is goofy fun. My only complaint of the album is having these two songs back to back. If it was sequenced a little better, it wouldn’t feel like a lull between these two songs. 4. Thriller: Just perfection. The narration, the sound effects, and most importantly, the music. It is genuinely my earliest memory of music in my life. I remember watching the movie “Michael Jackson’s This is It” and seeing the Thriller section. It scared me shitless. Now it’s one of my favorite songs ever. 5. Beat It: this is probably my most played MJ song ever. The chorus is memorable that you kindve forget that there is a killer guitar solo, and when that comes in, I’m always floored. MJ’s ability to get me hyped is nearly unmatched. 6. Billie Jean: I’m going to say it now, this (4,5,6) is the greatest 3 song run in the history of music. Billie Jean is my favorite MJ song and I know every lyric to this masterpiece (as I’m sure a lot of people do). Also the greatest chorus ever. My favorite vocal performance ever. Phenomenal. 7. Human Nature: Another great song that slows the album down at the perfect time. The “Why”s are intoxicating. 8. P.Y.T: I absolutely love the funk of this song and it has another great vocal performance from MJ. More great background vocals on the PYTs. 9. The Lady in My Life: I like this song a lot, although I wish the album swapped this with Human Nature; I think it would’ve been a better finish. Still really good.
#59 Only bangers.
Today I learned that you can run to almost any song on Thriller but absolutely not "The Lady in My Life"
The girl is mine feels really corny, especially the spoken word part. By far the weakest part on this otherwise stellar album of 80's pop. While every other song has infectiously danceable rhythms it stands out as a such a weird choice. Didn't realize Wanna be startin' something is the longest song on here.
It’s been very rare to find albums that actually hold true to the name of being needed to hear before you die but this is one, an absolute classic of an album. Banger after banger.
All bangers
Favorite Tracks: Billie Jean Beat It Thriller
A good mix of dance-y songs and ballads. Oh hey, Paul McCartney! Thriller - Beat It - Billie Jean is one hell of a back-to-back-to-back.
This is a GOOD album. Every song is fun and catchy, to the point that the album finished when I wasn't prepared. Thriller contains more singles than non-singles, yet every song is unique. Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones crafted Thriller's sound to straddle between R&B and pop. But Thriller also reminds the listener that Jackson created his own disco music before, and I love he didn't hide that aspect. The genres put together make for a fantastic, unique listen. It's no surprise this album was huge and remains a classic to this day. I would even posit that, yes, Jackson had decent to good success in his earlier solo career, but Thriller cemented his long-lasting success for his subsequent albums. There's nothing like this album, with how descriptive and engaging the music is, let alone the music videos. Every artist wants one iconic music video, but Thriller set the standard. While the self-titled track is unlike any other music video, Jackson can boast that he has multiple memorable videos on Thriller.
I don't even know what to say about this album that hasn't already been said. At this point, what CAN you say about an album that was revered then, is still revered, and that changed the entire course of pop music forever? It brought everyone together because there's literally something on here for everyone. There are no skips on the album, and literally, nearly every song on the album was a hit for Jackson, and those songs are still easily recognized today. Then there are the music videos for this album, which brought about a completely separate culture craze leading to an increase in scenery, dance, storytelling, and the overall spectacle of music videos. This is one of those albums that only comes around a handful of times in a lifetime.
This single album is a greatest hits album for most hall of fame careers. It's the best selling album of all time, and is so good that it harbors gems like a duet with Paul McCartney that is mostly forgotten when discussing this record. The most awkward of its tracks simply suffered from a mix that wasn't a great song for Michael's voice but would go on to be reworked as an R&B smash for LL Cool J. There's an Eddie Van Halen guitar solo buried in here just in case it wasn't the consensus ultimate 1980s album. And none of this addresses the cultural phenomen of Michael Jackson or the music videos that came with the album; foremost is of course Thriller, an absolute artistic game changer. He carried on with so much more after this alongside the tragedy of his life, and he had a hall of fame discography before this, but this was the mountaintop. He could write these songs for every instrument or element he wanted included and knew how to massage out exactly what he wanted the listener to experience while achieving precisely that. Even with its age apparent in places, it's exactly what a pop album should be.
Imagine having 3 world hits on an album AND a song with Paul McCartney. To be fair this one is pretty shitty.
Art before artist.
5 *
This is as close as you can get to the perfect album (other than the last 45 seconds of the McCartney duet). Deservedly the best-selling album of all time. Sometimes the general public isn't as dumb as we've been led to believe.
who starts an album like that.... (good way) baby be mine is a deep track id listen to alot.... so i will be listening to it alot ok the girl is mine... is that where this all started ???? is that why we have the boy is mine.. mind blown and then just bangerz... PYT is usually my go to off this album but i also need to give credit to beat it also v satisfying
Almost perfect. Human Nature and P.Y.T. back-to-back is just 🤌. No skips except the key change spoken word section at the end of The Girl Is Mine.
A classic
Don’t think I ever listened to this front to back and clearly understood from hearing all the hits how iconic it really was. Minus that song with Paul McCartney, which just sounds creepy now.
A masterpiece.
How can you not like this album if you listened to it growing up? This album is what makes pop better
It’s easy to see why this is the best selling album of all time. Given over half of them are phenomenal singles and the other bit are melodic love songs with MJ’s vocals, there’s a little bit of everything great here. Thriller really does live up to the title.
Varenda låt är en banger
damn
Is there a more perfect pop album? Maybe close, but I don't think so.
This album honestly had be waffling on whether it should be a four or five stars, but that’s because I think I was being too critical. I went back through all my previous rankings and this album just hits so hard compared to other four stars that it has to be a five. Five ICONIC songs on this album out of a total of nine tracks. Three of the remaining four and good to listen to. I have to be honest though I really don’t enjoy ‘The Girl is Mine’. Lyrically I think it’s not great and I think the concept of the song is weird, but that single song can’t unravel this album. 5 stars, amazing album that still holds up.
Ya it’s considered one of the best albums of all time and I don’t have anything revolutionary to say about it so I’ll give some fun facts: Having 7 out of 9 songs be singles is so wild. What’s also wild is how far apart they were released. In looking at the wiki entry, the song thriller wasn’t even released as a single until over a year after the albums release! That’s just so unfathomable now where an album is basically irrelevant after a couple months. I was also surprised to see this described as a “post disco” album where they were trying to move away from the sound which is weird because the bass lines for thriller and Billie Jean are straight up disco beats, which I’m totally down for though. Thriller is such a freakin good song. The musical structure of it seems kind of simple at first glance with just a repeating bass line and essentially four chords but what is so badass is after the third chorus, when the whole song has been in a minor key, you get this coda that has these major 7 chords with a full on Roger’s and Hammerstein vocal track all the way up to a 57sus4 splooge worthy chord that just comes out of nowhere. Also, I’m amazed how well the outro talking bit still holds up. Like this should have aged so poorly because it’s so cheesy but it’s still iconic. Beat it is great. Billie Jean is obvs real good, but this is one where there are so many good covers of this song (the civil wars is my fave) that I do kinda prefer the covers. On PYT there’s a bit at the end where it sounds like Alvin the chipmunk that kanye samples for the background noise of Good Life. I actually kinda hated the girl is mine. This should be so good with the Paul collab but this talking bit at the end really has aged poorly. Why on earth did they think that was a good idea. Overall, this is just an amazing album that truly showed the power of music in popular culture.
Amazing. Succinct, beautiful, one of those that may never be topped. Listening to this album after hearing so many of the other albums on this list just gives me more of an appreciation for it. Truly a triumph. This album permeates through culture, with almost every song having a ridiculously famous cover/interpolation. I think of RHCP and Rage, but I don’t think either of them are as universal as this album. The pinnacle of the list thus far.
What is there to even say? This is arguably one of the greatest albums ever made. Hit after hit from beginning to end. I love the timeliness of getting Thriller to kick off spooky season, it’s like this list has a mind of its own. PYT is my favorite MJ song, Beat It and Billie Jean are all-timers, and if Human Nature isn’t on your Yacht Rock playlist, I want nothing of it.
How is this not 5 stars? It's the best selling album of all time (20 million more than second place). It has seven top ten singles on it. It is objectively the most successful album ever created. The length is good, the hits are great, and it's impact is unheard of! Even if you don't like Michael Jackson, you can't deny that this is one of the greatest albums ever made. On a side note, I can still remember where I was the first time I watched the Thriller music video. We were on a middle school field trip to the aquarium and we stopped at a restaurant for dinner. They were playing music videos on all the tv's that night, and one of the servers could do the entire dance. When Thriller came on, the whole restaurant stopped what they were doing to watch this guy perform the entire song and dance perfectly. It's a core memory that has stuck with me for 20 years.
What more can be said about this absolute classic. I'm still amazed on the skill and ingenuity every tine I listen to it. 5/5
yeah, amazing
Banger, 10/10
If ever there was an appropriate album to be assigned on this crisp autumn day, it is this one! The fact that people debate whether or not this album is the best ever made only proves that it is one of the greatest. Look, this album isn't perfect, but it is the perfect example of a great album. There's are nine tracks, each with a unique feel but a cohesive sound. There's a guest appearance of a huge star from yesteryear. There's an iconic music video. There's a three-track run of mega-hits which are more popular than most religions. What other grade could this album get?
-5 for potentially being a pedophile, but a certified banger.
Still blows my mind that he released Thriller one week AFTER Halloween
No hay palabras para describir esta joya. Simplemente magnífico.
great album 5 stars
Biggest selling album of all time, sold 1 to 2 million copies A WEEK for almost a year. Contains monster songs like "Beat It", "Wanna Be Starting Something", "Billie Jean", and "Thriller". It also features a goddamn Beatle *and* Vincent Price. So yeah, you could say this is good...
The 80th. Wonderfull
I mean it's sold more copies than the Bible
Bf gbg
The sheer cultural impact of this album and Michael Jackson had on the US population, especially the kids in the 1980s, was unavoidable. This album, at least for me, is nostalgia in its purest form. Would Michael Jackson and the eventual juggernaut of Thriller even have been as successful without the platform of MTV to rocket it off into the pop culture stratosphere? Who knows. But you cannot deny the sheer brilliance of how expansive Quincy Jones's range as a producer was to create an undeniable and incredible masterpiece.
Through and through just a masterfully produced album.
Classic, with some magnificent songs on it. Buy it now and revel in it!
Unreal album! Those middle tracks are all absolute hits. Not exactly my style of music but one simply can’t not love MJ. A couple of weaker tracks toward the end are disappointing. 4.5 starts really but it’s earned a 5!
Albumi #61, 27.09.2024 Michael Jacksonin legendaarisin albumi vuodelta 1982 on eittämättä loistava pop-musiikin taideteos.
Totally an album full of classics -just have a hard time with him as an artist bc of his personal life
I want to know which girl Michael and Paul we're fighting over. 5.
one of the best albums ever
Amazing
Very good. Amazing how many huge hits are on one album. Paul McCartney almost cost it five stars.
Perfect record. Favorite track: P.Y.T.
The very best Michael Jackson album! Every song is a must listen.
The King, can’t really argue with why this album sold so well, bop after bop
Fun, bright, timeless.
5 mil estrelas.
Oh ffs. This is tough. I would love to dismiss this artist outright. But you had to be there! Every person alive in 1982 was dancing to this record. That’s not an exaggeration. Someday soon, you’ll be able to shout “mama se mama sa mama coo sa” in a nursing home, and grannies will jump. I’m going to strap my blinders on and point at Quincy Jones. He was already an extraordinarily successful producer. This and Off the Wall are really his projects. All the swinging, jazzy sophisticated song structure, is totally in line with Quincy’s previous work. Michael’s style changed (sucked ass, no pun intended) without him. So, for Quincy Jones, this is pop music perfection. It was atomic levels of popularity. Beatles and Elvis level sensation, around the world. And then the Thriller video landed and nothing has been the same since. Another jam for granny to bust a hip to. She and her mahjong group will know every move. I remember every kid busting out the Billie Jean moves every time they crossed a tiled floor. Absolutely every child attempted the Moonwalk. This record will remain relevant for a long time, despite the creep on the cover. This is still great. Like really great. Quincy Jones is a genius and he brought out the very best in the artists he worked with. Thank you Quincy Jones. 5/5
The best selling album of all time. Timeless.
Listening to MJ is so funny, because it becomes very evident when he wrote a song versus when Quincy or Rod Temperton wrote it. MJ writes absolute nonsense lyrics that are so fucking funny. Wanna Be Startin' Something is the best example of this. I mean, what needs to be said about this album. It's one of the greatest pop releases of all time. Quincy is a god at production and guided this album into the promised land. If you ever doubt Quincy's influence, check out the original version of Thriller on youtube (it's called Starlight and it is some Jehovah's Witness propaganda). MJ's vocals are infallible, and the harmonies are so intricate and lush. The melodies and counter melodies are so perfectly done, it is hard to imagine the amount of talent that went into how some of these songs were written and arranged. Human Nature might be the greatest pop song ever written and performed. Lady in My Life might be the most underrated song in history also, but it is a tough act to follow up such an impeccable tracklist. Add onto this the brilliant music videos that were partnered with this album, Thriller fucks. FUCK THE GIRL IS MINE THOUGH, THAT SONG IS SO FUCKING SHIT GOD DAMN. FUCK YOU PAUL. This album is too perfect to not give a five, even with that shitty song. The other songs are too incredible.
The Girl Is Mine (with Paul McCartney), Thriller, Beat it, Billie Jean.
Didn’t even really need to listen to this to know it was getting 5 stars. If you can listen to this album without breaking out a dance move-there might be something wrong with you.
one of the best albums of all time. there will never be anything like it.
There is no question that Thriller is one of the greatest albums ever made, containing songs that have entered the collective consciousness of the entire planet. Jackson and Jones created a masterpiece. Some probably feel uncomfortable with it because of Michael Jackson but I have two things to say to that: 1. You have to separate the art from the artist, otherwise you'll never watch a Hitchcock movie, look at a Picasso, read H.P. Lovecraft or listen to Wagner. All horrible, problematic people but people tend to be less bothered once enough time has passed and MJ is too recent but forget it, move on, who knows what your favourite artist really got up to in their private life and what objectionable views they held? Their creativity doesn't have to be part of that, just enjoy it for what it is. 2. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that what happened to MJ was one of the worst acts of collective bullying we've ever seen. Was he weird? Of course he was weird. He was fucking Michael Jackson, a star from childhood and more famous than God. Was he a paedophile? I sincerely doubt it. He was childlike and probably acted and behaved in a way around kids that we view very differently from today but I strongly suspect he never sexually abused anyone. So much money-grabbing, false memory, opportunistic law suits that led to irreversible reputational damage and no doubt contributed to his drug use and ultimately his death. The way the world treated MJ was like a modern-day witch burning. MJ should be remembered positively for what he created. The only thing that should be reviled is the way he was treated by the world on rumours and hearsay. Too bad the real "Human Nature" was shown at its worst.
Always nice to get albums that I know, I'm very conflicted on whether or not to give this a 5 because it has some absolute bangers but idk that's just Michael Jackson you know. However I'm feeling benevolent this morning
First time listening this album in full. So many great jams that are timeless
Thriller is absolutely incredible. It blew me away the first time I heard it, and it remains one of the best albums ever.
It is hard to comprehend how much of a cultural force this album is, but it helps when you listen to it and it essentially sounds as contemporary and vital today as it did then. And the three songs in a row of "Beat It" "Thriller" and "Billie Jean" is arguably the strongest three song set of pop songs on any pop album ever.
Such a good album (although there is a bit or a pedo vibe)
So many hits on one album. Easily his best.
It was my 11th birthday and nobody came to my birthday party except for my friend Mark, who brought me “Thriller” on cassette tape as a gift. Mark and I spent the afternoon swimming and eating hot dogs and listening to “Thriller.” It was a great birthday. Thanks, Mark.
I know it by heart he was my fave throughout my childhood
I owned the tape and played it on my Sony Walkman (the yellow one) and the Bestie Boys in HEAVEY rotation for several summers—I've heard this at least 2,000 times. I don't feel that's an exaggeration. I also remember sneaking to watch the Thriller video the night it premiered. It was so scary to me then...which now seems absolutely ridiculous. I give the album and music a 5, not the person.
I can see why people love this album it is one of the best of all time, it has the legendary 3 song run thriller to billie jean. Even though I don’t like him as a person (pedophile) I loved this album.
I know MJ was like a freak or whatever but this entire album is certified bangers. They just don’t make songs about rotting inside a corpse's shell for eternity like they used to!!
What more can you say. Yes it took a village, mega producer, Toto and Eddie Van Halen to make it great, but that does not take away from the product.
I mean come on It’s one of my favourites Practically perfect
Literally the most well known pop album of all time. Every song on here is worthy of its awards and accolades. After all, he was the King of Pop for a reason 10/10
I'm a fan.
I have heard this so many times but I was excited to listen again. There are three skips on this album, ‘Baby Be Mine’, ‘The Girl is Mine’ (worst song on the album) and ‘The Lady in My Life’, however the other songs are so ridiculously good that they make this a 5 star album.
Full of bangers, what a classic
major classic. it’s hard to believe so many great songs are on one album. 4.5
Overrated
Is this album better than Bad? No - but, this album is still incredible. A real benchmark for what pop music is and it defined pop music forever. This album is the best selling album of all time for a reason, and nothing I can say here could do justice to the other tens to hundreds of thousands of other reviews written for this beast of a thing. So alas, 5.
One of the best albums ever. All numbers here are hits. Love it, should listen to it more often.
I mean what the fuck else can I rate this? There are several tracks in Bad that I prefer over this but this is a more consistently strong album altogether. A little frontloaded in terms of having some of his biggest hits in the first half. Highlights Thriller: ***** Still feels wrong without the music video accompanying it, still an iconic song nonetheless. I think the Vincent Pryce section might be etched into my brain (apparently he chose a flat sum of money over royalties for the song lmao). Wanna be Startin 'Somethin': ***** Such a groovy fucking opener, immediate confidence from the get-go. Might be one of MJ's catchiest beats. The way it feeds in from the opening is infinitely satisfying Beat It: ***** My favourite of the album. Feels more like something that would be on Bad than the rest of this album. Might be the best guitar work in his music (a tie up between this and Dirty Diana for me)
This is pretty close to a greatest hits compilation. Ridded with bangers. Thriller, Beat it and Billie Jean are immaculate. Baby be mine, The Lady in my Life and PYT were new ones for me that I enjoyed. Human nature had great vocals of course, but didn't hit quite as hard as others. Spectacular overall. King of Pop
Groovy ass opening beat. There’s just something inherently fruity about Michael’s vocals. Sounds like he’s saying you’re a vegetable. Guitar solo in wanna be starting something goes crazy. What is with the hee hee shit he always does I’ve never understood it. Maybe child abuse is justified if it produces singers like Michael. Baby be mine is such a floaty little pop tune. Paul McCartney feature hit me like a freight train what da heck. This shit must have blown up the charts. Tfw little Michael steals your gf…. First certified banger arrives. Pretty ballsy to just make a song about ghouls and jam it in the middle of your album full of standard pop fare. I was not aware beat it was from the same album as thriller man MJ was fucking cooking on this one. The guitar on this track shreds but I can’t stop thinking about the weird al version of this song. Holy shit 3 bangers in a row!!!! Back to sex music I suppose. Thank you Michael. PYT slaps I think this is my favourite track on this album. So groovy. There’s gotta be a pedophile joke in here somewhere. Man that was a good ass album, not a single dud track. No one that makes music that good could possibly diddle kids. Maybe Michael should have made a song about how he doesn’t diddle kids. Thank you Joe Jackson for beating talent out of this child!!
I remember Michael Jackson coming on in a record store, hearing it on a high quality sound system for the first time opened my eyes towards how masterful it sounded. Surprisingly this is the first time I've given a full listen through of the album. My only criticism is it is slightly front loaded and the highs are so high that it makes songs that would otherwise be the highlights of an average album seem a lot worse. 9/10 Fav tracks - Wanna Be Startin' Somthin', Baby be Mine, The Girl is Mine, Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing), The Lady of My Life Least Fav - Human Nature
Ecouté avec une oreille ^^
Just great!
Great album!
Was going to give 4 stars but I couldn't find the flaws. Front to back bangers!
I mean cmon this is arguably the greatest album of all time and it’s easy to hear why. Just a perfect collection of songs, the arrangements, his vocals, just an all around classic project. Not a skip in sight, it’s always good to listen to this album again!
Perfect? No. Still Incredibly Good.
Some songs i´ve listened before, and the audio mix is stupid good. How did i never listen this entirely before?? A classic masterpiece
I recently got the UHQR version of this and I’ve heard things I’ve never heard before. The separation is amazing. Although the detail some takes the party vibe out of the mix. It’s taken me many years to fully appreciate this album, all the performances and songwriting that went into it, and Quincy Jones’s production of this album. Simply amazing.
Lempparit: The Girl Is Mine, Human Nature
7/22/24. Don't think there's much to say, this is one of the best albums of all time in terms of songwriting, production, and performance. Very memorable tracks.
One of the best albums of all time. No notes.
Best Album OAT. MJ was a TRYHARD. 10/10 indiscutible. Claro que iba a ser el mejor, this shit is Legendary in every aspect you can imagine.
It just might be the best OAT. 10/10 mítico mejor que el sexo
Classic. One of the best albums ever released.
baby be mine thriller beat it billie jean p.y.t. (pretty young thing)
King of Pop arrives. Seven jams and two stinkers. Album isn’t Bad. Unlike McCartney whose overplayed jams grate on my nerves, Mike’s Thriller can (almost) do no wrong. I find myself coming back to “Human Nature” and “PYT” and “Baby Be Mine” most often to escape the dominance of the other tracks. A truly fantastic odyssey into the weirdness of MJ, the man who couldn’t find love and channeled that frustration into the drive for perfection at all costs that he and Jordan embodied during my youth.
Michael Jackson's Thriller is the biggest selling non-compilation album of all time; the album set records for sales, number-one pop songs, and Grammy awards. Thriller's unmatched success led to Jackson's claim to be the "King of Pop." The album was released when MTV was in its early stages, and Jackson's songs were propelled by a series of remarkably popular music videos. The album includes a collection of songs of surprising range - from ballads to funk to dance tracks - but all packaged as remarkably catchy pop songs. Jackson's smooth, expressive voice is the consistent element across all of the styles. The songs on this album are iconic - "Beat It," "Billy Jean," "Pretty Young Thing," and "The Girl is Mine" - and among the reasons that Michael Jackson may deserve the "King of Pop" title.
One of the Best selling album of All time. Side A ending with Thriller and Side B starting with Beat IT and Billie Jean! Three strong and great Songs right After each other. That's Amazing!
The greatest pop album I know of. It delivers hit after hit and it's crazy that so many of Michael Jackson's top songs are on the same album.
Hi theiller
Dang haha McCartney track is so weak 😂 I wonder if it was a case where no one else in the studio had the guts to tell them the truth haha. Doesn't matter though, of course this album is bangin. Beat It and Billie Jean are back to back nukes. What pop songs can compete? Not just catchy but intense! With the exception of Girl Is Mine, all other tracks bring something to the table; Thriller the fun, Human Nature the soul, PYT the funk. I mean Tenderoni?? Pretty easy 5 from me.
Nice
Baby be mine and The Girl Is Mine are Incredible The stretch of bangers after that is truly jaw dropping
One of the best albums of all time - half of these songs will be on my 2024 Spotify wrapped. Personal faves: - Wanna be startin somethin - Baby be mine - The girl is mine - Human nature - PYT - <3<3<3 THE LADY IN MY LIFE <3<3<3
10/10. Up there for best album of all time. Classic after classic.
It had no reason to be this good when it released and it has no reason to be this good now. It kicks ass in every respect.
# Playlist track - Wanna be Startin' Somethin' # Notes - This thing has Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean. In a row! - It's fun, campy, catchy, infectious maybe. All around amazing listen.
fantastic, not a bad song on here, one of the greatest pop albums I've ever heard
okay i concede my gen z arse gets ALL the hype
This is one of the few albums where almost every song is a 10/10. I wouldn't consider many of these in my wheelhouse, but I love them for what they are.
Perfect
5 favorite: beat it least: ???? potential goat pop album, 4 different mega hits and no skips
4.5 hee hee hee
Fav: Billie Jean Least fav: The lady in my life
Whatever you have to say about MJ, Quincy Jones produced one hell of an album. It must have been totally crazy to be alive when this came out.
10/10 Quincy Jones Rod Temperton Jackson made an almost perfect album. There are no bad songs on this one.
Who would’ve thought the best selling album of all time would also be one of the absolute best? This album is magnificent from start to finish. 4.7 stars
The of my top 10 all time greatest produced albums start to finish!! I’d give it a 6 if I could! say what you want about Michael the man but the artist Wow and of course the great Quincy Jones!!
It can’t be denied: this is a damn good album
This album is near perfect and just reminds me of my childhood.
Hood classic
Hee hee
I've always been more of a Michael Jackson greatest hits fan than an albums fan. Which is why this is the only album of his I own — because it is essentially a greatest hits album. In fact, it is the best-selling album of all time (worldwide). This album is insane. There are literally two songs on here that weren't singles. And they were all top 10 hits. Including, of course, "Thriller." I still remember the first time I saw the video (short film, really) on MTV in the early 90s, and I had no idea it had already been out for about 10 years at that point. It still holds up today, and almost every year some new video goes viral on social media of some group doing the dance. So many of the songs on this album are firmly embedded in the American (and probably world) culture. Whether you've seen Thriller, danced to one of the many songs at a wedding/bar mitzvah/school dance, or enjoyed the Weird Al parody "Eat It," you've probably interacted with this album in some way. This album also showcases the evolution of Michael Jackson from child Motown star and disco star to the King of Pop. The sound is much more varied than on efforts like Off The Wall, including not just disco/dance songs but branching out into socially conscious R&B (Human Nature), pop (Thriller, The Girl is Mine), and even rock (Beat It). It's produced by Quincy Jones, features legendary artists Paul McCartney and Eddie Van Halen, and even has an equally legendary cameo from actor Vincent Price. It's basically impossible to give this album anything less than a 5.
I grew up with this
Excellent.
If you're looking for a hot take, this album is not the place for you, because I think Thriller is a pretty great album. I know, right? It's only the best-selling album of all time. That alone warrants the album's inclusion, but it's important to know why this album is the best-selling one. There's many factors that led to this, but the main thing is that it's Michael Jackson, one of the most significant figures in the history of pop culture, at his absolute peak in both popularity and talent. Say what you will about him as a person, but the talent that Michael Jackson and the rest of the people involved with this album was immense. Each song stands out and there really isn't a bad one in the bunch. There's a reason why 7 of the 9 songs on this album were singles. This resulted in what is arguably the greatest three-song-string in any album ever with the songs "Thriller," "Beat It," and "Billie Jean." The sound is excellent and the singing is great. The writing could be a bit more varied, but the differing styles of each song makes the album not feel repetitive. The extra music talent is also important. Things like the production from Quincy Jones, the writing from other people such as Rod Temperton, and the occasional appearances from people like Paul McCartney and Eddie Van Halen really stand out to make this a safe candidate for greatest album of all time. Is it my personal favorite? No. But there's no denying that this is an insanely important album that also happens to be really good. 5/5.
Classique
This is Thriller! Thriller night!
Not a bad song on this album. One of his greatest albums. Everyone remembers Billie Jean on tv
Some albums are front loaded, some are back loaded, this one is middle loaded with the biggest songs of all time. These songs are iconic and if the album was just the middle it would be a 10/10 masterpiece because of the magnitude of the hits. Unfortunately the songs surrounding these are just no where near as good and bog down the beginning and end. 9/10
The perfect pop album. Never listened to the whole thing. Everything that has been said has certainly been well deserved. Heard Thriller too many times, but it’s for good reason. Standouts: Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, Baby Be Mine, The Girl Is Mine, Beat It, Billie Jean, Human Nature, and P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing).
First Off the Wall, then this. What a great few years for MJ.
Hit after hit. As usual. The slow stuff is amazing. Thriller to Human Nature is a disgraceful run of tracks
