Reviews (page 8 of 8)

oh this album? absolute dog meat trash that should be nuked and never played again. I never wanna see this red album cover another day in my life and that’s on baby

Mietin olisko ensimmäinen no comment arvostelu mutta jätetään tähän nyt kuitenkin.

God damn it. I didn't know I'd have to start my day by giving the Bee Gees 1 star. Gutted. My dog's opinion was that he hated the cymbal clashes in With All Nations, and he'd like you to know he's usually very chill about loud sounds in music. I thought the album was over and my auto-play had gone to Danny Elfman for some reason, but that was the last track, The British Opera, so I guess that's my favorite song.

Comfortably one of the worst albums I've heard on this list. Like a knock-off Beatles record lacking any of their charm or wit, a real slog

It’s like the Wiggles tried to be relevant.

No. I’m not doing this to myself. 3 track in and I’m hating it

Truly awful

Wake me when its over

Never have been a big BG fan, and after listening to this, know I will never be one. A lot of the same old thing

This is the Bee Gees. So disappointed. If it was a random act. A low 2. but this is the bee gees. Everything was so forgettable.

Most artists found disco and embarrassed themselves. The Bee Gees were ahead of the curve and managed to embarrass themselves before finding disco.

This album just made me kinda angry for some reason

Onneksi disko tapahtui.

The title track for this is a monstrosity. Warbling and overindulgent, it doesn't even make up for it by being interesting. At 7:35 it is a chore, and I look at the total running time of an hour and five minutes - it sends shivers down my spine. I really hope the rest of this album gets better. After about 25 minutes, I realise that it probably isn't going to. "Whisper Whisper" is a significant uptick, but then it tails off again, and I'm done with it. Not for me.

Could not get through this

Not buying the hipster narrative that their disco heyday was a sellout, and that the late sixties stuff is some kind of Nuggets buried treasure. This is at times embarrassing and pretentious - if you're names not Eurovision or the Champions League then better not be writing a 'National Anthem for All Nations'. Hoping the Sat Night Fever soundtrack be on this list, but only 250 left to go and its not so far.

I feel like the 1001 album selection is an elaborate troll. Where is Saturday Night Fever? Why this album?

The best decision the Bee Gees made was to embrace disco. This is meh folk rock.

Are we sure the Stayin Alive band made this boring church choir ass shit?

Yo, this is a piece of excrement.

album was way too slow for me, expected upbeat tunes like Stayin Alive, but not on this album.

thanks, but no thanks. this concept failed!

Editors of the 1001 “ hey we should put some Bee Gees albums on here” “ Do you like super famous late 70s disco albums?” “ no, they have a late 60s concept album about a ship”. “

This 60's fantasy/political Lyricing really hasn't aged well. These days I find it so naff. A somehwat tedious easy listening progr/concept album. Has nothing of the trademark Bee Gees disco/funk, and somehow the vocals sound so generic. Tedious and uninspiring.

Komisches Album.

I didn't even know the Bee Gees existed before disco. Now I understand why.

Sounds too much like a Moody Blues/Beatles rip off, and the vocals just don't do it for me.

Not bothering

Oh you can't be serious - I had to hear it to believe how crappy this is. A response to Sgt Pepper and Pet Sounds? Yeah, sure - this has nothing comparable to the worst tracks off those albums. My only issue - 1 star or 2?

not a fan

This was not my favorite. Not my vibe

Not that good

What the actual fuck is this?

No disco

Would’ve been totally fine dying without having heard this.

Where are the good Bee Gees songs?

Man alive, wasnt expetcing this, not really disco but really, really terrible. This has made me very sad.

Met all my expectations of a pre-disco BeeGees concept album. It was rubbish. If the concept was to try to emulate 60's Beatles/Pink Floyd/Kinks/Elton John and drag it out for over an hour then mission accomplished boys, but why did you bother?

The TBI Beatles

Not what I expected. 1.5/5

Weird English guys doing Nashville schmaltz about an old boat and lightbulbs. Not what I was expecting at all, makes me long for disco. Prog adjacent folk with acoustic guitars, lots of strings and bells, the odd French horn - but barely any rhythm section. At best (Marley Purt Drive) they sound like a decent The Band tribute act. Sometimes (whisper, give your best) they sound like a 7th tier Beatles ripoff record playing too slow. Cons: the songs are extremely repetitive and very very boring. Pros: they last forever and there are loads of them. What is it with this list and tedious British concept albums?!

The Bee Gees Sing and Play a Sprinkling of Shit Beatles Songs, by Barry Gibb.

Bleh...disco bee gees are the only Bee Gees I recognize. 1.5/5

Unbearable. Mind numbing. Listening to this is much like drowning. No, I will not elaborate.

Not what I expected, in a really bad way. What in the actual fuck was this?

Didn't make it past the first song, a slow drowning in the freezing Black Sea would have been more fun. Terrible Beatles rip off

A reminder that before they were an awful disco band, they were an awful sixties band. The lyrics on this album are also awful.

I'd never have associated the Bee Gees with the year 1969 if not for this list. To my surprise, this is the Australian disco mega group's 4th album. And it's still a full 8 years before 1977's "Stayin' Alive." Interesting how they moved from soft-pop, prog-rock adjacent double albums like this to MPSTing pop singles in the disco age. Can you imagine if Yes pivoted to become a disco supergroup at the end of the 70s? Of course, Bee Gees were never Yes. Even with this attempt at "serious" music they are much more Seals and Crofts than Yes. Which makes for a slightly less-strange path from soft pop to full-blown disco, I suppose. Other than that mildly interesting history and context, this doesn't do a whole lot for me. Their disco stuff is better. "Marley Purt Drive" would be good if it wasn't so blatantly similar to "The Weight" by the Band (1967.) Similarly, "Melody Fair" feels like a Beatles rip. By “Whisper Whisper” I’m skipping a lot of songs and just recognizing multiple choices as one Lennon-McCartney-Martin regurgitation or another without any of the playful, experimental-pop spirit that makes those Beatles songs great. Just finding this annoying and not distinct enough to warrant revisiting. Yeah this album has nothing for me. I was holding out for “First of May,” but that is not good. 1 star.

I’ve listened to this twice, waiting for something to grab me. Nothing ever did! A shame. I usually like big concept albums. Even the orchestration felt kind of flat to me, and I’m usually an absolute sucker for that kind of stuff. Charlie put me over the edge! It’s true! I thought this was gonna be cool and was bummed out. 1/5

I wouldn't mind never hearing this album again

Not impressed with the vocals nor the songwriting.

Didn't know what to expect from pre-disco Bee Gees but I was expecting better than this shite.

Wow. Nope. Very boring and indulgent.

This is awful. I really hate to yuck anyone's yum. But it's hard for me not to judge someone who likes this. I am still trying though.

Wow! I remember seeing the album at the record stores but I never bought it. In 1969 I was into Abbey Road and still buying a lot of 45s. In 1968 I bought "I started a joke" and "I just got to get a message to you." Then after this album was their big hit "lonely days." I guess we just weren't ready for Concept album yet. I have no idea why this is on the 1001 albums you have to listen to

This was just absolutely terrible. It is remarkable to me I how a band with seemingly no talent at all just kept making albums over and over and over. Ooof, that first song.

Very weird album, and I cant help but think that I would be pissed off if I had actually bought this as an LP 50 years ago. I mean, this is a REALLY bad album. Its kind of confusing as to why it would even be on this list, except as a cautionary tale. 1/5

Well this easily ranks as equal to the worst thing I’ve had. I’m not going to listen twice, otherwise my streaming service will think I like it. The ones that weren’t terrible all sounded the same. And the lyrics, don’t really reflect attitudes of modern society. It’s a one because there isn’t a zero stars. Why isn’t there a zero stars ?

Ick. I can barely tolerate 70s era Bee Gees. I don’t need a double album of their 60s stuff. I could barely finish it.

I hated this overblown, [pretentious piece of over-long wannabe concept album garbage. I could enumerate the ways, but I just want the bitter taste of this record out of my mouth.

Insert Krusty 'what the hell was that?' meme

This album was new to me, although know It Was Good Day very well. The rest of the album seems in a similar vein, if a bit less laid-back. Solitary samples looping most of the way through each track with Ice Cube rapping on top. Enjoyed some of this more than others, and by the time it got to Good Day it was feeling a bit monotonous for me. The sound (and lyrical content) is very much of its time, but an interesting reminder of that time, nonetheless.

Prefer the Disco days of the Bee Gees. Not really my thing.

This was not what I was expecting. Super middle of the rock rock yeehaw

The disco Bee Gees are a guilty pleasure of mine. The pre-disco band is not. All songs are mediocre, down tempo ballads and it goes on and on and on… 😱

Not a favorite of mine.

Not for me

Kind of boring, but whatever.

Not what I need on a Sunday. Drivel at best but oh y god what a band . Best group ever

This album was terrible.

Didn’t listen - I hate the BeeGees.
