I'm imagining this must have been released towards the end of his career given that it was in the late 70s but this doesn't play like someone trying to keep themselves relevant. It has a confidence and strut that sounds fresh today

Crunchy, raucous blues. Muddy is just having a great time cutting these tracks, being a little raunchy, and soloing through each track with a downright nasty tone.

It’s a great example of the Blues genre and I’m sure if I saw them live in a bar/venue it would be just electric. But as a blues noob I feel like a lot of it was lost on me and all ended up sounding the same. A good album to have on when doing other things but not one to stop me in my tracks.

Never listened to Muddy Waters before. It's shameful, given how many guitarists (that I love) cite him as an influence. In the end, though, this is blues. And it gets old fast to me. Unless I'm at a dive bar 2-3 pitchers into the night...

Muddy is maybe the best blues vocalist ever. He’s also a solid blues guitarist, and he leans on one, the other, or both in really smart ways throughout this album. He does a good job of leaning in the band (especially the harp player who is phenomenal) and not “sealing the show” - it’s a real nice balance. It’s also perfectly imperfect- if that makes sense. It’s good sloppy blues. I loved hearing them BS with each other after most of the tracks.

I love blues classics and this is top tier! Muddy Waters was one of the best there was, the opening track still kills.

I don't necessarily like the Blues, but I absolutely love this album. It's probably because nobody did the Blues like Muddy Waters. No one else has ever come particularly close. Deserves to be on this list for "Manish Boy" alone. This thing just slaps. The only issue I have, and this is really just nitpicking, is that none of the other 9 songs compare to the magic and joy of Manish Boy. But you could say that about almost any song.

I really enjoyed this song.

I find must blues to be predictable and formulaic but I rarely dislike it. Couple of stand out songs for me are "I want to be loved" which I know from the stones' version and "crosseyed cat".

Sounds like where the blues were born. I like the whole of it. The riffs are classic - Mannish Boy and Bus Driver riffs have become synonymous with what the blues sound like. And there's a dive bar sensibility to this album with the "crowd" chiming in here and there. The lyrics are minimal, but convey the mood perfectly in between the numerous blues breakdowns, which are the focal point of the record. I Want to Be Loved Again - Simple, real, and another classic bluesy feeling. Jealous Hearted Man - I've now heard a lot of records about women leaving men, men not being good and begging for women to come back, etc., and it has almost never worked better than it does in this album. I Can't Be Satisfied - Just when I was about to say how the one complaint I could make about this album is that the rhythm and style at this point is starting to run together, here comes I Can't Be Satisfied. This song is a perfect placement in the album. A different style, cleaner, smaller, more technical, and awesome. What if the Blues Got Pregnant and they named the baby rock and roll - A return to the classic blues riff, but this time with more observational substance. Another classic. What a talent! Deep Down in Florida - I love how this album moves. No song overstays. I am always ready for what's next. Crosseyed Cat - A new take on the "lost by baby song, and I loved it." I mean - where does he come up with this stuff? Little Girl - Sounds like Bus Driver, but a variation. Easy to groove to, and again - simple but genuine blues. And those breakdown sections are sweet. Could have been the last track, easy. Walking Thru the Park - Interesting choice to make this the closer. It works too though! Great album!

quite enjoyed this - particularly the more upbeat ones: I can't be satisfied and 'the blues had a baby named rock'n'roll. less so the very slow ones with more harmonica e.g. deep down in Florida. crosseyed cat is fun

The endless blues made with perfection. Today I‘m not in the mood, but maybe tomorrow. ;) definitely annoying in the wrong mood, but if you wanna learn the classic riffs with the right vibe you can‘t go wrong.

The King of the Blues and the most important Blues album of all time. I can't quantify that and the Blues had been around for decades at this point, but to breathe a heavy gust back into the genre in 1977 can not be understated.

Such good stuff. There is such passion and honesty in the blues and this just drives from the opening note. Unapologetic and timeless greatness.

Can't believe how much I love this for a country album. Amazing lyricism, great voice, solid understated guitar work. I'm going to need to pick this up on wax.

One of the most influential blues musicians. Interesting instrumentals, soulful vocal performance. Sounds exactly what I'd expect blues to sound like. Does get a bit repetetive, but that's just blues I guess. I don't listen to blues a lot, so taking that into account this album is a nice 5/5.

Interesting to listen to some music from the Genre Gijs loves: Chicago blues. I only learned from him recently that it's very distinct from other forms of blues. A lot about making love and sleazy undertones. I can appreciate the historical context of this kind of music but with a lot of repetition, my ears do get tired rather quickly listening to this. In my feeling more the type of thing you intersperse a few songs at a party rather than listening to the whole album.

Sounds a lot like how I've been made to think the blues should sound. And I think it's pretty good. Although, I've seen that quite a few people prefer Waters' earlier stuff so I will have to dig a little bit more into that, but meanwhile this was quite a good introduction for me.

Oh that voice, it melts my soul. These songs live in the ether, in some kind of collective memory that we all know. So familiar the sound has become a cliche, but nobody does it quite like Muddy Waters.. It's all just beautiful, and sounds like it just happened organically, like he picked up a guitar and this album just happened. It's a wonderful force of nature we all have in us.

Yawn. Now I realize why I don’t own any straight blues albums. “Is this not over yet” definitely went through my head a few times. Too repetitive, all the songs sound the same, same guitar, harmonica, drums, harmony. Don’t get me wrong this is low down and dirty as it should be. His voice is guttural and perfect for blues. The harmonica howls. The rhythm section keeps it crawling along like a mud snake. “I can’t be satisfied” was a bit different and that was welcome. “Cross eyed cat” had a baseline variation which made it stand out. Maybe if it was hot out, and I was feeling a buzz and inside a sweaty biyou speakeasy I could appreciate it more. But I’m not and I can’t.

It's blues, it's dirty, and it's done well. I lost interest after a couple tracks. Straight old blues tracks are great now and then but an album of them feels a bit repetitive. It's not bad, it's just not all that interesting.

Great to see the name Muddy Waters not referring to the hedge fund. I was wondering why they edited out the crowd noise and was surprised to find it wasn’t live. Crosseyed Cat is my fave on this LP. As the penultimate track it clearly shows there is no filler. “Can’t be Satisfied” is insane. After a steel guitar solo, the broken coke bottle typically gives way to the guitar pick to take the rhythm. Not here though; the steel keeps rolling . Q: What song on this LP did the Stones played at the El Mocambo w Maggie T watching? A: Track1

I had the privilege of seeing Muddy Waters open for Johnny Winter When waters was touring his comeback record Hard Again; considered one of the best blues albums of all time. James Cotton on harmonica, Pinetop Perkins on piano, Willie 'Big Eyes' Smith on drums and Winter on guitar. Johnny Winter repays his dues by revitalizing the greatest blues artist in history with an extraordinary LP. I bought it after the show, and I still listen to it. Perfection.

Just finished listening to the Muddy Waters album. I enjoyed it. Sure, it’s a bit samey. But the band sound like they’re having fun pretty much jamming live together in the studio. The drumming on “Mannish Boy” is great, too.

Mit 64 hard again, es muss sich richtig geil angefühlt haben für den alten Muddy. Und so schiebt und scheppert er wie in alten Zeiten und statt dem Busfahrer eine reinzuhauen zieht er ihm fast schon psychedelisch die Bluesharp über die Ohren dass ihm hören und sehen vergehe und er im Gegenzug für immer weich bleibe. Oder so; es ist Sonntagmorgen und ich hab den Kaffee noch nicht auf. Aber Lust, mich näher mit dem Original Stuff zu befassen.

What a weird experience. I love Muddy Waters, but the version I like is the one who recorded with the brawling, hardass 'Headcutter' band on all those wonderful Chess Record sides. This is actually a very good blues record, but it just misses that dusting of magic that you got with Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers et al on sideman duty. Still, you get Pinetop Perkins on piano!

Love those old blues. This was a perfect blues album, something I haven't listened to before. This is great "hanging out" music but I don't think I'd ever listen to it on a playlist. Great start with Mannish Boy and there were a few others on there too, the album breezed by. Pretty basic cover but it's about what's inside that counts.

I’ve never listened to Muddy and I really enjoyed this album. It reminded me of my ship days, chillin in a booth at the BB King Blues Club with a cocktail. Just sitting back and listening to the jam.

A great surprise from a blues album. Mannish Boy is probably the strongest track, and the background yells throughout are a highlight. 7/10 at least, Muddy Waters is a legend

Pleasantly loud stuff here from a founding father of blues. Blues aren’t my exact bag but I can easily see why people enjoy blasting Muddy Waters, and indeed I’ll be returning to this once I’ve got the full-hearted sound system (and possibly jovial party) a record like this obviously deserves. A respectable 6/10

I’ve always known the name Muddy Waters but wouldn’t have been able to tell you they were a Blues signer. I really enjoyed the album though blues aren’t my top genre.

Not too long ago, we had a live album from Muddy, and I remember saying in my review that I was missing hits like "Mannish Boy." Well, guess what track opens this album? It's a blessing and a curse, because I love that track so much that the rest of the album paled in comparison. I hate to say it, but I think I preferred the live album overall. Still a good listen, the music is consistent, but my interest fizzled out fairly quickly. Even in his older age, Mannish Boy is such a powerhouse hit that the rest seemed tame in comparison. Favorite tracks: Mannish Boy, Bus Driver, I Can't Be Satisfied. Album art: This looks super goofy to me. There's no way he's hard again while dressed like that. 3.5/5

Classic, classic record. Great listen, though no single song sticks with me past "Manish Boy," except maybe "The Blues Had a Baby and They Named it Rock and Roll."

First two tracks are a Led Zeppelin II rip off but I guess that's ok. Pretty enjoyable, fun, delta shit... It's 1977 but still part of that style that influenced all the 70s rock I love. Some of those old iconic blues guys are inaccessible but this is very listenable and has some enjoyable shredding. Same groove over and over again but its a good groove.

I feel like my enjoyment of this record would have been enhanced greatly by hearing it loudly in a sweaty room while drinking cheap beer. Instead, I listened comfortably while washing dishes and drinking tea. Love his voice and the overall sound of the record. The first song’s a classic (though his spelling needs work), but most of the rest just kind of washed over me.

Some blues, baby! There's something very organic about the sound of this album's production that makes for a very different listening experience to the others. Blues is not my favourite genre, but this is the best of it I've heard thus far.
