Hard Again

Not a big blues fan. From a production stand point the album sounded way more modern than I was expecting. I actually really enjoyed the first track but after that I felt like every song was basically the same thing at a different tempo. I can appreciate that as far as blues music goes this is probably a great album (I think?) I’ve just never really understood the appeal of straight up blues music.

I just kind of don't get the blues! Fair warning, Jacob's and my reviews might be similar here for a while because we're in the same place listening at the same time lol. But we both largely agreed: for us the blues are more fun to play than to listen to. Don't get me wrong, this album was really pleasant to have on in the background while prepping coffee and cooking and cleaning. But my enjoyment just kind of hovered on a superficial level for the whole duration. My eyes kind of glaze over and my head bobs gradually grow less emphatic the more I sit down and try to really listen to what's going on. "I Can't Be Satisfied" and "Crosseyed Cat" were exceptions, super weird funky shuffle-y grooves!! Everything else seemed to be straight blues, better consumed live at a block party, outdoor festival, or someone's backyard than on studio speakers. One really obviously great thing about this album is all of the players. It's so tight in a subtle way: when the pianist doubles the bass-line, the harmonica player plays a more comp-y pattern; when the harmonica player plays trills and more solo-y lines, the piano steps up to fill in the chords; the bass and drum battery are so tightly locked that you almost feel them more than hear them. And of course Muddy Waters' vocals are incredible, expressive, raw, emotive without ever sounding forced. My 3 star review here is more a reflection of my own inability to approach and enjoy the blues than a reflection of the album itself. I think part of it might be because I played the sh*t out of the blues every day when I was playing trombone in jazz bands growing up. But I definitely didn't mind the album! Just wish I could get in there and enjoy it more.

A solid collection of blues songs from one of the best blues singers of all time. Blues isn't my favorite genre, and it's tough for me to listen to a whole album without being reminded of how repetitive it can get. Still, Muddy Waters is a legend. 3.7/4

Ah! I was hoping this would be the one for me. I’ve been hoping that a blues record would come along someday and convert me. I love playing the blues, and I think I’d really dig seeing a blues band play. So maybe an hour record of Muddy Waters, laying it all on the line, could get me there. Sadly, not this record for me. I still had a good time, and the first track is iconic. Past the first two tracks, things got more monotonous. I always feel like I don’t know what I should be listening for! What am I missing? What’s the part of the blues that I need to “get” to unlock it? A fine listen! Just not a conversion experience, which upon reflection is a lot of pressure to put on any one record. 3/5.

I don't know. It all sounded like pretty straightforward blues music, like down to the chord progressions. Given how late this album came out and how late it was in Waters' career, I doubt this was novel at this point. It was a fine listen, but nothing really stuck out to me. Standouts: Mannish Boy, Bus Driver, I Can't Be Satisfied

I hate Blues.

Over the top and draining. Every track feels the same. They're all good musicians, but it doesn't make me feel anything else than boredom, and I find it more depressing that cheerful. Straight blues is just not my kind of thing, but I appreciate its influence (many of my favourite rock bands are deeply rooted in blues music).

Majestic performance from Muddy Waters, backed by some exceptional musicians. Some great classics here - Mannish Boy above all - and each track has your head nodding and foot tapping

Incredible blues album. "Mannish Boy" a killer song to start the album. It does trail off though - the album appears to be top heavy but a great listen all throughout. 8/10.

Awesome back to basics blues. It's got energy, soul and it's catchy as hell.

A solid blues album. I found myself not getting lost in the music though. It wasn't bad, but not really engaging either.

I love blues music. However, I do have to admit that most blues songs, from any blues musician, all use the same three chords, key, and chord progression. It does tend to make it all blend together into one long song.

It’s of a time. Not really the kind of thing I would choose to listen to but perfectly pleasant.

When listening to this album it's clear there's a lot of talent behind this music. However, because I don't really like blues at all, I don't think I really have the ability to appreciate it as it probably should. Also, probably due to the unfamiliarity I have with the genre, I feel like every song sounds exactly the same to the point where I was unsure where one song started and another ended or even when the album ended (because of Spotify's autoplay). This would be 2.5 if possible.

I really enjoyed how fun and genuine this album. The background hollers on the opening track. The soulful singing throughout. I would listen again for sure.

I can totally hear how much of an influential sound this was at the time, but where music has gone since, this is now (dare I say it) … boring to me?

Solid blues album

Bluesy, obviously, but it's a lot more chill and "cool" than I expected. Backround yelling, jokey lyrics, a "don't care just make music" attitude. Maybe it's punk instead..? Quality sounds older than '77, but it could've been produced less professionally than the stuff I'm familiar with from the era. Kept my interest longer than I expected, but not long enough for an entire listen. Maybe I'll have to put on the full album in the car. Overall, even though I don't particularly enjoy blues, it is a good album. It's something I could see myself listening to on vinyl with a fresh black coffee, lol.

I keep thinking this album is older than it is. So many staples and the recordings are interesting, but kind of boring in a way, and I guess I expected more. Cool guitar sound, though.

TIL that Muddy Waters' given name is McKinley Morganfield. Huh! Difficult to put aside my deeply ingrained feelings for this music enough to give it an objective listen. I was shocked to discover that it was recorded in 1977 and not 1950. I don't know how to critique this. Every track puts my entire nervous system in sympathetic resonance (this is a good thing). I'm going to put it on again.

I liked the guitar.

A great blues album, makes you wanna sit on a porch with a bottle of whiskey. But very much like drinking whiskey, it all just becomes a muddled blur the longer it goes on. I guess Muddy Waters is an appropriate name.

I don't listen to much blues music, so I was happy to take the time to listen to this album. The songs didn't resonate with me very strongly, but the music was good.

Incredible guitar work and very layered in the musical sense. The album starts off incredibly strong but I felt it got very repetitive towards the end of the record. The last couple of songs were very hard to get through as they all sounded very identical to each other. Favorite Track: Bus Driver Least Favorite Track: Little Girl

Very good for a lazy late summer still hot blues

Muddy Waters is one of those names you hear a ton when talking about blues but I can't immediately think of his songs specifically. Should be a good first listen! Definitely pure blues through and through. I like blues but I do feel that it can be a bit "samey" at times where all songs just don't have that thing that makes me distinguish one from another. Clearly talented but not something I would add to my personal collection.

I do not connect with the blues in any way, shape or form. The musicianship is there, but what else? Three of the tracks, including 'Mannish Boy', are re-recordings - perhaps because the remaining (original) songs are just not that great. Two stars for the musicianship and for not being actively annoying to listen to. I am just completely indifferent to this record.

This is obviously good. The musicianship is great, Waters sounds great… And still it does little to nothing for me. Straight up blues just isn’t my thing. And I’m not really particularly sad about it.

Great Chicago blues

An amazing achievement for someone in their 60s. This album is polished and full of catchy riffs. The guitar solos are purposeful and hold interest.

Not exactly in my wheelhouse but this was cool to listen to. Muddy waters voice is very good and is just meant for the blues. Instrumentation is pretty good and jam-y and has a real homespun and improvisational feel to it. I want to be loved and mannish boy slap.

Muddy has a cool ass voice. This is just classic jazz man. Not my kind of music but I can appreciate it. If i went to a jazz club this is what i would want to hear (I am not going to any jazz clubs) 4/10

Heard of this guy before but never listened. Pretty good delta blues, and I got a chuckle out of some of the song names/lyrics. Seemed like a fun jam session for the members. It's hard (no pun lol!) to give it a higher score though, as it really is just 45min of "teach yourself the blues" templates. Doesn't stray from the script at all, which is good for a few songs... but 7min numbers? Come on man. 3/5.

It can be hard to take blues and make it sound fun, engaging, and interesting through the whole album without the standards getting a bit tiring. Muddy Waters just gets behind the mic and says "Try me."

Good Blues is something you get lost in, and this album was no exception. Dogged driving riffs combined with Muddy's performance make for a fantastic 45 minutes.

Johnny Winther refining and updating the Muddy Waters back catalogue to some extent. And it works!

Sultry blues, a good listen

A classic blues album. It was good. I don't think I would listen to the whole album again but I would definitely revisit some of the songs again.

It is a decent album, but not his best work.

Best Song: I Can't Be Satisfied. I don't know, something about the humour/melancholy of the song tickled me right. Worst Song: The Blues Had a Baby and They Named It Rock and Roll. I just find the meta-approach of music about music to be kind of annoying, even if the musicianship in this track is top notch. Overall: This is a difficult album for me to review. I do know that this style of music wasn't made for me. I don't know enough about the blues, I can just recognize it when I hear it. I don't know or appreciate why standards (ranging from the level of song down to individual riffs) are so prevalent in the genre, but I do know that as a result of these standards, the music starts to feel familiar or repetitive very quickly to me. The instrumentation and vocals are great, but I just can't get past the trappings of the genre.

Such a brilliantly filthy romp throughout. Only 13 years after the release of "Folk Singer" this feels so lived in, and raw.

If you were to check my profile, it will no doubt show that Blues is my least favourite genre. This really isn't the case as it only that insipid English Claptonesque Blues that I have an aversion to. This Album and Muddy Waters in general is the stuff of greatness. His growling voice, the metronomic rhythm section making this music dirtier and meaner than young Eric could dream of playing.

4.0 - I love Muddy Waters and this album is a worthy showcase of his talents. Clear, uncluttered production. I do slightly prefer the rough and urgent bite of the original “I Can’t Be Satisfied”, but the updated recording is also great.

The interesting thing is that had this been live in some roadside bar, with one too may Jack Daniels in me, it would have been a strong 5 for me, and a night to always remember. Unfortunately I'm on headphones and its just not the right enviroment.

I'm not a huge blues fan, but this is probably the closest I can get to liking a whole blues album. Muddy has an amazing rawness to his sound (vocals, guitar) that add to the standard blues riffs and get a little beyond the repetitiveness that I naively associate with the genre.

This album itself is a bit too late to be very influential, being 1977 and all. But Muddy Waters was the king of electric blues, the most influential figure in the development of blues rock when he wowed audiences in Britain and pushed the formation of the Bluesbreakers. And three of his classics are re-recorded here better than ever before. This is one of the most consistent blues albums out there. Excellent production done by Johnny Winter. Flow is smooth and satisfying. There's a good mix of energetic dance tracks ("I Want to Be Loved") and slower introspective tracks ("I Can't be Satisfied", "Deep Down in Florida"), but for the most part it's loud and impactful enough to engage the audience all throughout. This is one of the albums I would recommend for newcomers of blues.

Great Blues album. Would listen again for sure.

It's a beautiful sunny Friday here in Canada for the first time in months. Spring is trying it's damnedest to spring after a long harsh winter and my energy is high. I'm just not in a bluesy mood. Today would have been a great day for some 80’s Billy Joel instead. I gave Muddy a listen, but it just does not match with my mindset today. Actually, I don't think the blues ever really match my mindset. Respect to Muddy, he is an all-time great musician. Maybe some other day.

As much as I get bored by heavily blues-derivative rock... it's nice to be reminded that the real deal once in a while is a blast. Production is perfect on this, Muddy's voice is great, and I love the occasional "voices in the background" giving it the real feel of being in the room with the band. Of course there's only so long I can listen to 3 (or 2...or....) chord songs before I'm feeling a little worn down, but self-check: the entire genre is based not around songwriting/craft but feel and attitude, which this album churns with. The aforementioned voices of the band themselves give it that authenticity - and I usually hate that word associated with music but I have to admit it fits here. An absolutely essential primer for anyone who doesn't "get" blues. Learn from the master. 8/10 4 stars.

03/26/2022 Another great weekend morning and evening album. No skips.

It's hard to come up with a better example of Chicago Blues or of a band just jamming and having fun. This album was produced by Johnny Winter who also gets credited for miscellaneous screams as an instrument. The energy is high with most songs sounding like they were recorded live. A lot of high points throughout but James Cotton's harmonica, OMG. I admit to not being a harmonica historian but this is the best and most devastating use of that instrument that I've heard. I'd say he pretty much steals the show but there are so many great moments. This is Muddy's first album for Blue Sky Records after dropping Chess Records. "Mannish Boy" starts the show and is one of the most famous and best blues song that I know of with memorable uses in "Risky Business" and The Band's " The Last Waltz". Winter's screams and Cotton's harmonica make this 1955 re-recording a highlight of any album and an absolute stunner of a song. There are two other Muddy re-recordings "I Want to be Loved" and " I Can't Be Satisfied." Not to be outdone, the guitars absolutely sing on "Bus Driver", an absolute jam with Cotton's harmonica. The bus driver stole his woman; as if that alone is not a great subject for a blues song. The only song which I've heard elsewhere more than once is "The Blues Had a Baby and They Named it Rock and Roll, Part 2" which features great guitars from Muddy, Bob Margolin and probably Johnny Winters. Every song is great here, pretty much a highlight. If I didn't know blues and had to pick one album to get, this album might be it.

Have I heard this one before?

I'm not sure whether it's more of a reflection of the all-pervading influence of the blues on modern popular music, or a sign of how stylistically conservative this album is in particular, but I found most of the tracks felt very familiar. Waters is a charismatic and assured vocalist, and he and his collaborators all seem like they're having a blast while laying down the album, which gives the whole project a very enjoyable air. 'Mannish Boy' and 'Bus Driver' feel every bit like timeless blues standards, but as the album progresses, while it never grates, I am left wishing for a little more rhythmic, tonal and textural variation.

You can hear so many other great songs and artists when you listen to it but only because so many great artists came after and tried to sound like Muddy.

Pa svi ovi blues albumi što su dosad bili, moguće da su popušili zvjezdicu samo radi toga što su u krivo vrijeme došli, pa mi nije sjelo kako vjerujem da bi. Ovaj album je peglaona i čika Mutni dobro masira po gitari ko inače.

Ufff, jedino bolje blato je bilo pokraj školskog.

Muddy Waters already had a 40 year old career by the time he released Hard Again, but his voice still sounded amazing and gave a unique signature to his music. It's indeed a return to form for the legendary blues musician and the rerecording of "Mannish Boy" made it sound fresh more then 20 years after the original version.

Stories well told. The guitar becomes a duet.

An in-situ (and even meta) look at the transition between Delta blues and what would eventually become rock n' roll. Some tracks run a bit longer than they can sustain interest for, but the LP mostly delights with infectious energy, passion, and historical interest.

Good blues, great voice full of mischief and fun! Quite busy production - prefer slightly fewer instruments or a cleaner mix between lead and rhythm, so I’m only giving 3* to the blues legend that is Muddy Waters.

This is how I like my blues: loud 'n' raucous (Mannish Boy is Exhibit A). Can't've been revolutionary in '77 but it sounds like a real fine example of the genre nonetheless. Held my attention pretty well throughout the duration. 3.5.

Amazing energy top to bottom. Mannish boy is a great opening track. That is a charismatic album.

Thumping blues record full of grit and dirt. Waters has bucketloads of charisma and the band are just the finest musicians assembled (the harmonica here becomes a stunning solo instrument). A cold stone classic.

I don't know blues much more than I know jazz. But this album stood out much more than the jazz album we got a few days earlier. I still don't really know how Muddy Waters compares to other blues artists. But I can say that I really enjoyed this album, and would gladly listen to it again.

Growing up my cousin was obsessed with guitar and played in many bands, mostly blues. He introduced me to the blues and I’ve enjoyed the genre ever since. With a fairly basic structure, blues music can sound the same. However, the blues are best distinguished by unique layers on top of the basic base. Mannish Boy starts the album off with a bang. I especially love Johnny Winter screaming out in the background. It’s obvious the band has played together a lot. They are seasoned and tight. The guitars, the piano, and the harmonica all offer engaging layers on the basic blues sound. I’ll be coming back to this album again.

Muddy Waters was a legend and I respect that but this kind of blues I find difficult to sit through for a whole album.

So much feeling and soul in this album. I loved it. Made me really appreciate Muddy Waters as an artist and songwriter.

"She used to get a ride in the daytime now she gets a ride in the night" Looolz!! Singing about your wife cheating with the bus driver, going to Florida, a cross-eyed cat it doesn't really matter. If you got troubles, 12 bars and three chords you can build any kind of song you want. Throw in some blazing guitar, harmonica, and piano solos and jam the f*ck out!

Just recently (and this project helped) I've been really getting into guitar-driven blues and Muddy Waters is right up my alley (and on some of the playlists I've been listening to). Great album, I really enjoyed it. It wasn't exactly good for my productivity at work though.

I think this is the first pure blues album I've gotten after more than 300 albums - surprising. This is great, although I'm more of a fan of John Lee Hooker type blues - more of the gritty, raw style. But Muddy Waters is obviously an exceptional blues man. 4 stars.

Absolute beast of an album. Quintessential, essential, cornerstone work from one of the most important artists in American music. The man is a legend and this album is legendary.

Respect Muddy Waters for being a big influence on blues and rock, but got bored after a while. More suited to background music for me.

Chicago Blues at its rockin' and stompin' finest. I know the blues is a vast and deep ocean from which nearly all Western tonal music comes, and I totally get how easily music in the boundless "blues" genre can disappear into that unfathomably huge ocean, but when it's done like this, it's all good. I often caught myself tapping my foot and bobbing my head as the tracks grooved on. The whole album moves, and all the players are superb -- and whoa, man, Pinetop Perkins on the piano, holy smokes! Reminds us that the blues didn't emerge as a musical style so very long ago as a means to bring others down, but as a process to sing and play it out to feel better.

This genre is so good. Why isn't it played more?

Good Blues

From the off, any album that opens with Mannish Boy has my attention. A three chord riff repeated for five minutes, but never boring. Bus Driver is good, but possibly needed to be a different tempo or feel, because it's starting to feel samey. This continues - by the improvement on prior tracks of The Blues Had A Baby And They Named It Rock and Roll I'd started to struggle to realise when one track ended and the next began. I want to like this album. He was 71 when he made it, and Mannish Boy alone shows he could still create pure fire sometimes. But the complete lack of tonal variety really holds this back - when you look at the energy on display on BB King Live and compare it to the *ahem* muddy mid tempo blues of this, there really isn't enough here to make me want to came back.

as much of a cunt as it makes me sound, i prefer his earlier stuff. this is all a bit polished and formulaic - yes i know the blues by its very nature is formulaic - but this is that type of blues that i slag off clapton for where its lost its soul.

This is pure music. I liked it very much. After all the songs, I think that it is a little bit repetitive, but it's so awesome that even this drawback is something good!

Formulaic blues.

Hard Again marked something of a return to form for Muddy Waters. A new lease of life had been provided by Chess Records- for who Waters had been signed to for 27 years- being bought up and the label moving away from releasing original recording by artists which left the iconic bluesman looking for a new label and a renewed sense of direction. There is nothing particularly unconventional on Hard Again in terms of the genre of blues rock, but that doesn’t mean it lacks punch or purpose. Indeed, most of the songs are standard Muddy Waters fare and some are even reinterpretation of old favourites, among these Water’s blues standard ‘Mannish Boy’ (which he had introduced 22 years earlier) stand out. It’s the production of long-term Water’s fan Johnny Winters that makes the album stand out. The songs are allowed to breathe, and the performers are encouraged to express themselves fully, even Winters himself indulges in a number of encouraging howls and handclaps. The sound verges on the chaotic, but it is held together in a brash and dirty rhythm. This is the blues after all. 3/5

I think I would have to be in the mood for this one. Right now it just kind of felt boring and all the songs sounded too similar and repetetive.

Muddy Waters is a familiar name to me, but I'm not sure how much of his music I've heard. I enjoyed this album. I like Muddy's voice. "Crosseyed Cat" was my favorite track, followed by "Deep Down in Florida". Perhaps if I knew more about the blues, I would appreciate more of the album. The album was good, but I don't know that I will remember this album well enough to come back for a second listen.

So much fun. I'm not cool enough to like this album. Harmonica is too high in the mix if he's going to wail on that one E/G trill for most of the whole album, but otherwise I could listen to this 10x. 100x if in person. Muddy Waters has the best voice for blues.

i couldn't tell you why, but i enjoyed this one more than the other muddy waters album on this list. in case this escapes anyone's notice...damn, he's good.

In here are some of the rawest and rolling-over-me-est blues I've heard. Muddy exercises his control over the throttle, though. I appreciate the resulting variety but wish the recording was more consistently live. Nevertheless, this takes the form to some pretty magnificent places.

It's like listening to an important historical album. It was fine.
