I have to agree with people saying that this is energetic, as I did feel that the musicians were giving they best. But, I didn't really like it. I think it is way long than it should, specially the longer songs, which felt boring most of the time.

I imagined that I would have a lot to say about our hundredth record. It is a milestone that requires to be marked. On seeing that we were given a late seventies blues album, I knew I wouldn't be able to conjure up much. It is unfair to criticise the blues for the compositional limitations inherent in the structure. I wouldn't do that anyway. But the slick guitar sound from a lot of late blues puts me off big time. Still, I listened to this and it isn't bad. In opposition to a lot of the reviews here, I liked Mannish Boy precisely because it stayed on the I for the whole thing. If the song is never going to move somewhere interesting, why not refuse to move? There was some great hollering on it too. The production is lively and clear, even making blues harmonica sound like a vital, growling texture. And the slide guitar on I Can't Be Satisfied sounds beautiful - it almost sounds like Captain Beefheart. I'm unlikely to listen to this ever again, but I guess it says something about the journey, now we're 10% of the way through: I am largely right about what I like and don't like in music generally, but, on a close listen, I can always find something to enjoy, briefly. 2 A couple of these tracks would nearly do. Does anyone sit down and listen to this whole thing? 50 minutes of 12 bars, turnarounds as old as the hills, and bursts of pentatonic noodling broken up by the classic ‘same note for ages’ gag. Sleazy barroom blues is great fun but it’s as good fun when any half-cut, half-competent set of players blast it at you and 6 other people on a Thursday night with a few drinks in you. What is there to praise here besides Muddy Waters’ iconic voice? Playing blues is like playing Monopoly - you learn the rules and away you go. Listening to blues is like watching Monopoly. I appreciated the relative austerity of ‘I Can’t Be Satisfied’ breaking up the constant party-clamour of honking harmonica, guitar, drums and bass, and piano (mostly all at the same time which can be great but generally - take turns kids) but honestly, it was track 5 and I was already partied out by that stage. I was probably looking for my coat by the end of track two. Or a pint at least. 2/5
Chicago Blues consisting of a standard bass line, noodling guitar solo and a lot of harmonica. Unfortunately this becomes rather repetitive and does not draw me back for repeat listens.

The opening to mannish boy was sweet and then it went on for so long. I really didn’t mind this album, but I also didn’t enjoy this kind of blues. I’ll take that live bb king record over this no problem or the healer too. I did like how ridiculously loud and distorted the harmonica was on this, that was sweet. Mid 2/5

Like it! Blues makes me feel cool.
I liked the music but I don't really care for the genre to be honest. I think my issue with this record is that either the genre is so uniform that I've already heard all of these classic, groundbreaking-for-their-time riffs, or I've heard so many people who were influenced by these classic, groundbreaking-for-their-time riffs that have already taken these ideas and fleshed them out in compelling ways already - in genre's I more prefer. In either case, it's a good record but every few songs I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd already heard some variation on the theme already. A cool record, but not necessarily a record I need to hear before I die - at least not anymore.

Oude blues in een modern jasje. Niet altijd met de gewenste uitkomst, maar vaak wel met een betere productie. Dat is ook goed te horen op Hard Again. De plaat begint meteen met de Muddy Waters-klassieker; Mannish Boy. En als je met het beste werk begint, hoe houd je dan het niveau op de rest van de plaat hoog? "Door gewoon hetzelfde te blijven doen" moet Muddy gedacht hebben. Eer ik bij Little Girl ben aanbeland kan ik mij niet herinneren of er een nummer ten einde is gekomen, of dat ik nog steeds naar een solo van Mannish Boy aan het luisteren ben. Op de hele plaat is Muddy heerlijk aan het bluesen, maar is het wel veel hetzelfde. Eigenlijk is alleen I Can't Be Satisfied een beetje anders (Seasick Steve avant la lettre) en een break in de verder continue blues-stroom. This isn’t for me. I respect the blues and all it influenced, but the variety isn’t there for me. I’m sure if you’re super into the blues then it’s great, and I’m glad I got to take the time to listen to it, but it probably won’t be listened to again.

Most songs are the exact same formula with slight variation. This album could be three songs long and would probably get a better rating without the feeling of redundancy.
I think we all need to be honest that blues music is actually boring. An album's worth of the same melodies over and over again is objectively exhausting to listen to.

I really wanted to like this album. But it's hard for me to get into an album when every song has the same pattern and musical development aside from tempo changes. I don't like harmonica
This was a lot like listening to Public Enemy, Fear of a Black Planet. Legends, and rightfully so. The album was huge and it’s easy to see why. And you can tell immediately you’re listening to world class performers. But for me, it was one track after another of the same thing over and over without any surprises. I hate saying this about music that people love, but this just didn’t do it for me at all, and I was actively waiting for it to be over. Versus Kenny Wayne Shepherd's "Blue On Black". It auto played afterwards. It’s blues rock and it’s pretty much a 4 chord song, but everything about it surprises and delights me, and I’ve heard this song 4,000,000 times.
Never listened to before, Mannish Boy is the song I know from the radio. Nice blues record, although all the songs sound very alike.
Have to be in a mood for it which I think would be rare. Good background but gets annoying after awhile.
I enjoyed Muddy Waters live performances that I heard, and I knew this one was one of his bigger studio releases, so I imagined I'd like this too, but while the energy was certainly there, I think I just have to accept the fact that I do not enjoy the blues. I understand the appeal of it while listening, and this is certainly better due to never feeling empty like many older blues records, but nothing here grabbed me, and with its run time I got sick of the same song and dance relatively quickly. Nothing here is bad, and I get the praise, but it just isn't for me.

Why does every song sound nearly identical? Sometime it’s a little faster, sometimes slower, but it sounds like the same song over and over again with little variation. Maybe it’s a blues thing… maybe it ain’t an album friendly genre.
let me start out by saying that I respect the blues. without the blues, there would be no rock and roll. it is literally the foundation of rock and roll. with that being said, most of the songs on this album are incredibly redundant. the blues, at least on this album, are incredibly formulaic with the same themes and rhythms. the blues has its place in the history of music, but listening to it now it sounds undeniably dated.

Om man som jag inte lyssnar på texten så blir blues bara en blues tolva med olika tempon. Ibland bytte han inte ens ackord så det var ett ackord och en snubbe som skrek. Någon låt var annorlunda vilket jag uppskattade för det gjorde det lite lättare att ta sig igenom denna.

I had a professor once who talked about blues traditions. When blues artists were making in-group music, it was about the words and the message. Instrumentation was there to give feeling. When the music was made for a white audience, words didn't matter as much, it was all about solos. That has always resonated for me with great blues and consumer blues. I mean, get that money Muddy, I ain't mad at you, but this is the pinnacle of white people consumer blues.
I won't lie and say that I don't like blues, but to me the album dragged HARD. Which is crazy, cuz the album is just over 45 minutes.

I know this is supposed to be classic music, but I've always found most blues really boring and hard to pay attention to, especially the earlier stuff that wasn't recorded very well. Not surprisingly, I could hardly pay attention to this album. So monotonous and the lyrics were all either boring or annoying. 2 starts because at least it wasn't an assault to my ears.
Blues music is too basic. You have to do something way more interesting to the genre to capture my attention. Were people really vibing to this in 1977 (let alone 2024)? Hard to imagine for me. 1.8/5

Ставлю двойку наверное, не то что бы за альбомом я провёл ультрахорошее время.

1/10/24. The king of Chicago style Blues music, almost sounds like a standard (admittedly need to listen to more blues music). Good music, but not sure I can listen over and over.
This album started well enough. "Mannish Boy" (a response to Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man") has great energy and added a modern crunch to the old blues formula. But then the rest of the album is just a bit samey. The loose groove of "I Can't Be Satisfied" is my personal highlight because it steps away from the 12-bar-blues formula for something a bit different. But by the end of the album I couldn't take any more of that harmonica. I was begging for it to stop.

I really don't like the blues much. It just doesn't appeal to me. Yeah a lot of great musicians dig it. Good for them. They can have it. Respect for Mannish Boy being pretty much the quintessential blues song. Take that with a grain of salt as I said I do not really like this genre. It's not horrendous but I definitely won't go back to it.

Muddy Waters is exactly the stereotypical blues that I do not like. I can appreciate the musicianship, but "Mannish Boy" always felt problematic, and I find the whole album very boring, as it just feels like the same blues music I've heard over my whole life. I do like some blues, whether its the really old Robert Johnson type stuff or the more "experimental" Jon Spencer Blues Explosion type stuff. However, Muddy Waters is the exact brand I just don't appreciate.

Not my thing
One of the big advantages for listeners in the music industry's streaming era is that QUANTITY is no longer valued the way it used to be. Artists in the pre-streaming era would deliberately record as many albums as possible to make as much money as possible, and boy does it show with Muddy Waters. Sure, blues is formulaic at heart, but quantity + formula = tedium, and it leads to music like this - music that is not inherently meaningful or memorable.

Absolutely love his voice. Found the first seconds of the first track so promising, until it went into the most absolutely generic blues riff for the rest of the song. Of course, he’s one of the legendary artists that originated this sound, but I’d have liked to see him grow and expand more musically.

Only really recognized one of the songs and even though I only gave it 2 stars I enjoyed it more than I thought.
Singing is soulful, drums are good. The harmonica, piano, and guitar are all excruciating to be honest. A few of the shorter songs limit this and sound good, but most songs have harsh, repetitive sections that are downright hard to listen to.
Already? But we just did it!

Not a big blues fan. From a production stand point the album sounded way more modern than I was expecting. I actually really enjoyed the first track but after that I felt like every song was basically the same thing at a different tempo. I can appreciate that as far as blues music goes this is probably a great album (I think?) I’ve just never really understood the appeal of straight up blues music.

Over the top and draining. Every track feels the same. They're all good musicians, but it doesn't make me feel anything else than boredom, and I find it more depressing that cheerful. Straight blues is just not my kind of thing, but I appreciate its influence (many of my favourite rock bands are deeply rooted in blues music).

It’s of a time. Not really the kind of thing I would choose to listen to but perfectly pleasant.
When listening to this album it's clear there's a lot of talent behind this music. However, because I don't really like blues at all, I don't think I really have the ability to appreciate it as it probably should. Also, probably due to the unfamiliarity I have with the genre, I feel like every song sounds exactly the same to the point where I was unsure where one song started and another ended or even when the album ended (because of Spotify's autoplay). This would be 2.5 if possible.
Blues legend, however not one of my favourite albums. Mix gets too crowded, guitar solos and harmonica solos seemingly going on at the same time

A great blues album, makes you wanna sit on a porch with a bottle of whiskey. But very much like drinking whiskey, it all just becomes a muddled blur the longer it goes on. I guess Muddy Waters is an appropriate name.
I do not connect with the blues in any way, shape or form. The musicianship is there, but what else? Three of the tracks, including 'Mannish Boy', are re-recordings - perhaps because the remaining (original) songs are just not that great. Two stars for the musicianship and for not being actively annoying to listen to. I am just completely indifferent to this record.
This is obviously good. The musicianship is great, Waters sounds great… And still it does little to nothing for me. Straight up blues just isn’t my thing. And I’m not really particularly sad about it.

It's obviously good and inspirational for many but I just couldn't get into it.

Respect Muddy Waters for being a big influence on blues and rock, but got bored after a while. More suited to background music for me.
From the off, any album that opens with Mannish Boy has my attention. A three chord riff repeated for five minutes, but never boring. Bus Driver is good, but possibly needed to be a different tempo or feel, because it's starting to feel samey. This continues - by the improvement on prior tracks of The Blues Had A Baby And They Named It Rock and Roll I'd started to struggle to realise when one track ended and the next began. I want to like this album. He was 71 when he made it, and Mannish Boy alone shows he could still create pure fire sometimes. But the complete lack of tonal variety really holds this back - when you look at the energy on display on BB King Live and compare it to the *ahem* muddy mid tempo blues of this, there really isn't enough here to make me want to came back.

Interesting to listen to some music from the Genre Gijs loves: Chicago blues. I only learned from him recently that it's very distinct from other forms of blues. A lot about making love and sleazy undertones. I can appreciate the historical context of this kind of music but with a lot of repetition, my ears do get tired rather quickly listening to this. In my feeling more the type of thing you intersperse a few songs at a party rather than listening to the whole album.

It's blues, it's dirty, and it's done well. I lost interest after a couple tracks. Straight old blues tracks are great now and then but an album of them feels a bit repetitive. It's not bad, it's just not all that interesting.

I heard this man is charismatic so I'm excited Mannish Boy: Ooh he's smoooth. I like the whooping in the background. Ok but it doesn't pick up at all like it's the same rhythm and notes the whole time. I got bored after 3 minutes. Sorry Muddy :( 2/5 Bus Driver: Its very bluesy- def what he's going for, it's good. I have a feeling it will not pick up however. Soo... I kind of fell asleep listening to this. I don't know if that makes this a good or bad album. Great, another blues album... Let's see if this one catches me a little more than Hendrix. Listening to the first track I'm already getting the feeling that this might be another skip unfortunately. I'm really not the biggest blues fan.

I'm not one to judge an album by its cover, but when I saw this one I knew I was in for a doozy. Yeah so I didn't like anything about this piece. No part of this album made me nod my head in the slightest. There's so much filler too. This album could of been 30 minutes long if there wasn't as much razzle dazzle. I adore the guitar as an instrument, but not like this.

I like some blues, and blues based rock songs - and I know Muddy Waters is considered one of the godfathers of the whole genre. So I was excited to be assigned this album and was looking forward to listening to it. Started off with Mannish Boy, which I was already familiar with and liked. About halfway through the album I kept thinking "Is this almost over?" Nope. It was just too endlessly repetitive to me. I lost track of when one song started and one ended. I often really like harmonica in songs - but here it was too much - just constant high pitched whining. Maybe they should consider using it more sparingly for better effect. The guitar was a little like that too. The production style just seems like a wall of noise with no breaks or room to breathe. The piano and the drums were the best part of the songs here. Old school blues will good sounds, but most of the tracks were too repetitive to me.
Pre thoughts: don’t like blues, it’s the same couple of riffs over and over in every song. Hank’s song in the Office ruins blues like Dewey Cox ruins biopics. Half way thoughts: I really don’t like blues. No structure like jazz or jam bands. Just not for me. Final thoughts: Before this exercise, I definitely wouldn’t have guessed that I like Romanian Death Metal more than blues. Hated it more than I expected to.
I did not like this album. Perhaps it is the recording technology of the time, but the timing for all the instruments seems off. It felt like a bunch of different instruments were competing for attention with the vocalist, and it just sounded like a dumpster fire. I didn't hate anything individually, it just didn't work for what it is. Maybe a remastered version with modern tech would be more enjoyable.
I know this may be an unpopular opinion but hear me out, I really didn't enjoy Hard Again which is a shame since i enjoy bluesy stuff from time to time but this is just not something i enjoy. Everything about this album feels so self-indulgent from the annoying slide guitar that is used so frequently to the point where it gets even more annoying to the messy composition. But this album not only managed to be annoying but incredibly boring too. All the songs here sounded the same and the album felt like it was going on for far longer than it actually was. I'm sure that you all see something in this album that i don't but as for me, This album is hot garbage. Best song: I Want To Be Loved #2 Worst Song: Little Girl

It’s not a go-to genre for me but I don’t mind a bit of Blues music and I know of Muddy Waters reputation so I was quite looking forward to this one. I bloody hated it. More than happy to be in the minority on this one. I get he’s a legend and all but, for me, it dragged on for what felt like a fecking eternity. At one point I figured I must be near the end so checked how long was left and I was only halfway. Gutted.
Probably one track I liked on this album. Which was Little Girl.

Uggggh. I hate this stupid list so much. The first song on this is the most repetitive, trite, pathetic, worthless excuse for music I've ever heard. How is anyone hearing this and thinking it's good? 1/10 This was a real struggle to get through, one song was just about listenable but an album was torture. Hated it. His voice and tone were excellent Musically it was repetitive and boring, felt like a jam session with a tight band who could just do this all day (and it felt like they did) Didn’t feel any of the craft of creating an album, just a series of repetitive blues jams with a “this will do” attitude This is obviously not my genre so I could be way off here The harmonica was especially grating, just endless tuneless wailing Sounded like a 1-hour version of the 80s theme tune to Roseanne. To be clear: that is a bad thing. Least favourite album so far in this project

What could have been a great album ruined by the excesses of Johnny Winter's production.
Surprisingly innovative and inspired instrumental combined with practically no song structure leaves me thinking this is an album one would only listen to to get ideas for their own album, with songs ranging from impressive but dull to outright tedious.
The man was so influential to the genre that he was considered the "father of modern Chicago blues", only for me to come along 45 years later and call his album "bland" and "samey." Smh my damn head. Also, maybe don't be an old man singing about "little girls" in a sexual manner?
