This is probably the quintessential Elvis record, at least in regards to most people's popular conception of Elvis before he got held hostage in Vegas and became a fat, drugged up, glittery mess (which to be fair wasn't even remotely his fault and I do sympathize with him a lot, especially after watching the very good recent biopic) I think I'm probably just going to have to reckon with that fact that I don't really care about Elvis outside of his big hits, the two of which that are on here being In The Ghetto and Suspicious Minds which are both excellent tracks worth the hype (especially the latter). The tracks quickly become tedious when listened to one after the other, especially as I don't personally find many of them to be particularly compelling as anything other than background noise. Which doesn't really help when my preferred method of listening (at least critically) is lying back and focusing entirely on the music) If you happen to be an Elvis fan and haven't check this out, fix that. Otherwise just stick to the hits, I'm always going to consider The King more a singles artist.
Elvis is of course a talented guy. His discography and works are of course impressive and expansive. He is also, of course, a unique voice which defined a genre. In my preference of music these songs hold a place for casual listening in the background at a dimly lit bar. Not quite something that I would put quality headphones on and get lost in. However, maybe if I were born in his time I would have jived more with this music. Hard to say, but short of a few good songs: I am only slightly interested in his grand works.

This is a solid Elvis album. I really like this era where he's singing more soulful songs and seems to have a bit more integrity in the choices he's making still. Zo mogelijk het beste album dat de "King" heeft gemaakt. leukste nummer: In the Ghetto "Only the Strong Survive" moest 29 keer overgedaan worden.
Man I liked some of them, but Elvis just isn't my cup of tea. I never liked his "crooning" too much, sounded forced. 2/5

Not a fan of this album. Some of the songs are ok, but after yesterday's album it's boring.
After leaving his deteriorating acting career, and staging the successful comeback special, Elvis vowed to never sing another song he didn’t believe in. This is the album that follows that up, and you can feel that sentiment throughout. He puts every ounce of himself into these songs, and they sore because of the emotions he’s bringing to the table as he sings them. The melding of country, blues, and rock ‘n’ roll are what made Elvis so special to begin with, and it’s all on display here with the help of the equally talented and in step Memphis Boys. Can’t think of a better studio representation of what Elvis was capable of than this album, especially this late into his short lived career.

Not poorly made, but not for me
Nice collection of Elvis Presley. A couple stand up, but it’s the same formula. Don’t get me wrong, it is nice, but after the 5th song gets repetitive. I think the reason why thy put it here was related to what was happening to his career- a sort of comeback- but in general, it is Elvis Presley back in the 69 -when Beatles dominated the music scene, the year of Woodstock- no more, no less.
I almost felt something, but I think that may have just been me going into a coma. The singer had no opinion or say in almost all of the choices concerning the creation of this album (or any of his albums frankly). This creates a separation between the vocals and the content of those songs. A wall between what the song is really about, how the writer felt about the song, and how Mr. Presley sung them. Elvis has a lot of energy, which I enjoy, but I don't think he was ever that talented, just and excited kid with a good manager (arguably). The lyrics, production, and instrumentation were all good, but just good. Elvis gave a powerful performance, but he's just not all that in my opinion. 3/5

The King's partial return to form after he finally gave up on his movie career. One or two plodders stops this being 5 stars, but I love pretty much everything about this - the songs, the performances, the American Sound Studio production. A great set of songs, and In The Ghetto has to be up there as one of Elvis' finest later recordings.
There's still a lot of churn on this album. It's an improvement on the lame film soundtracks, but hardly the future of rock 'n' roll. It's the voice as ever that pulls it off. There's some great harmonies with both the make and female backing singers. In the Ghetto is a great hertbreaker song. But I wanted something a little more dangerous before Elvis heads to the hotel circuit and death on the shitter.
Never been an Elvis fan. This was not something I’d choose to listen to again.
Solid mid-career sampling of The King and therefore worthy of the list. I never really got into Elvis - maybe just never appreciated him like I should have - still, he's always been just okay for me.

I enjoyed every minute of this album. Elvis shines over incredible arrangements that manage to wrap country and soul sounds together with strings and French horns. Amazing. The backup singers are perfection. It is jam-packed with incredible songs. “Suspicious Minds” (from the CD reissue) and “In The Ghetto” are likely my favorite Elvis songs ever, with “Kentucky Rain” (also from the reissue) right on their heels. But the real surprise were how many great songs there are on this that I hadn't heard or had forgotten. I love his renditions of “Only The Strong Survive”, “Any Day Now”, and “Gentle on my Mind”. And "Power of My Love" is a sexy, swaggering new favorite. "True Love Travels On A Gravel Road" brings the country romance, while “I’ll Hold You In My Heart (Till I Can Hold You In My Arms)” cranks up the soul. Elvis’ voice is incredible on “Long Black Limousine” with its strong gospel tones (performed with a cold no less!). “It Keeps Right On-A Hurtin’” and “I’m Movin’ On” bring on the country. "Wearin' That Loved On Look" combines both and is such a great opening to the album. If I haven't mentioned any songs on this album it is not because I didn't love them. I loved every second of this album. The production quality, the performances, the arrangements, the songs - it's all perfect. I’ve listened to this over and over for most of the day - I can’t seem to get too much of “From Elvis in Memphis.” This is Elvis at the very top of his game as he testifies, croons, wails and rocks his way through one of the best albums I've had the fortune to experience.

Elvis is altijd lastig voor me. Ik ken Elvis vooral als een soort karikatuur/persiflage en het is lastig om daar omheen te luisteren. Naar mate het album vorderde begon ik het meer te waarderen. Dus ik heb het daarna nog een keer vanaf het begin aangezet, maar toen kwam ik er achter dat de oorspronkelijke Side A (track 1 tm 6) voor mij zwakker is dan de rest. De oorspronkelijke Side B (track 7 t/m 12) vind ik wel goed.
It‘s Elvis, it’s fine
Elvis's best album since the 1950s by a country mile. The material is far better than anything else he recorded in the 60s and he is in very fine voice. Some great tracks here - In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds (although not sure the latter was on the original recording) but some of the lesser known numbers are pretty good too - I'm Moving On in particular. There are a few slightly cheesy numbers, but overall this is a strong recording

Me cagaron a pedos así que voy a escribir. Cuando vi que salió un álbum de Elvis pensé que me iba a comer un embole bárbaro, más aún cuando me enteré que era de blue eyed soul. Siempre pensé que se trataba de música sin alma y de una apropiación cultural vergonzosa, y si bien este último punto puede ser cierto, al momento de poner play todo eso queda de lado y suena una música impecable. La banda es increíble, la elección de canciones es brillante y Elvis la rompe toda. 9/10
Aunque uno ya lo sepa, siempre es un descubrimiento volver un poco más atrás y percatarse de que todo el pop y rock de este siglo y el pasado, nace de un choreo inmenso a la música negra. Igual no me voy hacer el boludo: ese pop y rock me han dado muchas alegrías, y esta música es preciosa. Elvis es un intérprete del re carajo, y le alcanzan dos notas para conmover, y transportar a quien lo escuche, a otro lugar y tiempo más acogedores o interesantes. En cierto punto, su voz es como leer el Génesis: revela el nacimiento de la injusticia y de nuestro mundo.
Si bien no está nada mal lo que hace Elvis, no es música que podría escuchar seguido. Siento que las canciones más rockeras no suenan tan bien como las más lentas, que a su vez me aburren baaaaaaaanda (como In the Ghetto, que está bien que habla de una realidad triste, pero ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). Por lo general, las lyrics de la mayoría de las canciones me parecen extremadamente cheesy. Me quedo con Power of My Love y Suspicious Minds como los highlights. 5/10

So good. And a great reminder of what the King was capable of, which is particularly useful for those raised on the TV ads for mail-order greatest-hits collections. Elvis is obviously relaxed and comfortable with the material and the arrangements and bands suit his big (but not too big or too forced) style of laying into the songs. There is considerable consistency here and one realizes that a few of one's faves ("Kentucky Rain" and "Suspicious Minds") were post-release add-ons, but "Gentle on My Mind" and "True Love Travels" and "Only the Strong Survive" are all outstanding as full-on Elvis-at-his-most-Elvisish manifestations. Despite the huge – and self-inflicted – risk of massive sentimentality and schmaltziness, it just works, which, one supposes what is meant by "it's good to be the King."

Elvis is a true tragic figure in the history of rock and roll. He was a trailblazer in the 50s and was incredibly talented, but for the rest of his career just seemed hopelessly lost and out of step with the times. This album is pretty good compared to his other post-glory-days albums, but for 1969 it just feels a bit clueless. Some of the best songs (Suspicious Minds, Kentucky Rain) weren't even on the original album, instead they were released as singles. By 1969 that's just not how it was done anymore. Other songs sound like cheap imitations of hits by other artists. For example, After Loving You is a blatant ripoff of Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino and Power of My Love sounds like a watered-down version of Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters. Overall it's not bad but it's sad that Elvis couldn't have better fulfilled the potential he had. 3 stars.
This album is exceptional, order, flow, vibe and showcasing of a folky Elvis that is full of heart and soul. Great classics like In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds. But quality of all the tracks are great and a relisten is worth it

It fills me with immense rage. \end_rant. Okay, I think I get Elvis now. This is some good stuff. We have an exceptionally strong start with 'Wearin' That Loved On Look', and the crooning 'I'll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms)' showcases a tight backing band with amazing dynamics. Elvis' voice really is incredible, especially on 'True Love Travels on a Gravel Road', and then 'In the Ghetto' is a perfect closer. Plenty of memorable moments, but also a handful of less memorable ones prohibiting From Elvis In Memphis from being a masterpiece.
Last time Elvis appeared on this list it prompted a 1 star review. That is not the case with From Elvis In Memphis. At all. Elvis sounds absolutely incredible on this record. His powerful vocal performances on “Only the Strong Survive”, “Long Black Limousine” and of course “In the Ghetto” blew me back. But even with Elvis delivering one great performance after the other, this wouldn’t have been nearly as good as it is if not for The Memphis Boys - ditching RCA Studios for this one was a genius decision. The band is just incredible and especially Gene Chrisman’s drumming left me stunned. I was ready to dismiss Elvis’ discography and stick to the hits after Elvis Is Back! God, was I in the wrong.

What a great listen. This is my first Elvis album and prolly first time listening through one. Such relatable, beautiful stories in each song. It started out kinda slow but the music was so catching and enjoyable, you can’t help but lose yourself in it, then the hits started raining down like Kentucky rain. Country soul ! One or two tracks feel a bit filler ( less so than his soundtrack albums though ) …but when it hits it really hits - Suspicious Minds and of course the sublime In The Ghetto

I was never a huge fan of Elvis’ voice it’s so dramatic but some of these songs it works really well.
Solid album, I’m a big fan of Elvis’ vocals. They can be really grand and bombast, but I think the nuance of emotion is still there. Just fun to listen to.
If you didn’t listen to this with headphones or earbuds the first time through, you need to go back and listen to it again. The tasteful use of the background singers and instrumentation really comes through in beautiful 1969 stereophonic sound. And the southern style really shines in tracks like “It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin’” (which sounds like it should be sung by cowboys around a campfire) and “After Loving You.” Listen to the snare in “Only the Strong Survive” — it’s so restrained and appropriate; every drummer (and producer) for the last 50 years would take the snare and amp it up, until it reaches its full culmination in the snare in Green Day’s Basket Case. In this case, the percussion stays in the background, probably in an effort to emphasize Elvis’s voice. Before I listened to this I didn’t know any of these songs other than “Suspicious Minds” and “In the Ghetto”, but I can’t believe more of these haven’t been covered. “The Power of My Love” is so bluesy — I’d love to hear a Blues Traveler version. I think Elvis himself covered “Gentle on my Mind” on this album and of course Glenn Campbell’s cover came along a few years later and really made it famous. Some of the songs like “Mama Likes the Roses” and even the famous “In the Ghetto” sound like Elvis trying to continue the tradition of teardrop rock that was popular in the 1950s, but now just sound sappy. If I’m in 1969 I prefer Zeppelin, but this isn’t bad at all.
Okay, I'm definitely warming up to this one. But it was a long road to get there. My first reaction to hearing this album was feeling a little distant from the music. I guess that's a fair way to put it... listening to Elvis' voice has always had the quality to me of viewing an historical artifact behind a glass case. Very much like listening to a broadcast recording of Churchill. You can't help but listen to it and go "oh, that's just Elvis The Historical Figure," and it almost rolls off my ear like it's a museum piece. It doesn't help that– and I'll be honest here– Elvis really hams it up. An amazing performer, no doubt, but you get the sense he could be singing about anything! I'm always wondering who's the man behind the singer, what his internal life must be. Whether he is actually connecting to the words in "In The Ghetto" (written by Mac Davis). Is he really feeling it? Why am I getting the same feeling I get when I hear an audiobook reader recite someone else's book? Where is Elvis in this picture? All that said: This is just a really pleasant album to listen to, and a great example of a crossroads album between the Nashville sound and some soul/ Motown influences. It's just a good mix. Part of me is like, eh, the playing is nice, but have you heard the basslines that James Jamerson is doing on all those Motown records? Really any late-60s Motown record puts this record in stark relief. Especially for 1969... a LOT has happened to develop that sound by then. But the cool thing about this album is that Elvis is doing it, and he's doing it *well.* I need to stop wishing that an album *isn't* this other, better produced album, and just appreciate the moment that we get. And it is a treat that we get to listen to this kind of crossover. 3/5

Lyssnar sällan på Elvis, men dagen till ära sitter jag och dricker kaffe och njuter av Jerry Scheffs fantastiska basspel och de generiska texterna. En bra skiva.
Denna är ju helt suverän. The King alltså! Men det kingigaste är kompbandet... och hela soundet på plattan. Tyvärr tror jag att jag har lyssnat sönder låtarna lite. Tänk om det hade kommit en till platta med helt nya låtar, allt i övrigt samma.

Please give me early Elvis! The hungry, innovative, inspired, edgy, bluesy Elvis. The Sun Records Elvis. I can listen to THAT all day long! Not this! Uninspired, bloated, saccharine, sappy...those God-awful, elevator-music strings...mind-numbing horns....Hollywood orchestra chorus. I'm sorry, but this is just vapid and insipid....the beginnings of Elvis's eventual movement towards the sad parody of himself that he would ultimately become at the end. Don't despair, though....go listen to the good stuff. There's plenty of it! This is NOT it. 1/5

In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds were the highlights. Not an Elvis fan but this wasn't bad.

Very enjoyable music that felt like it had heart
The main attraction of Elvis Presley is his ability as a performer. I feel that what makes him so captivating has little to do with his studio album material. That said, From Elvis in Memphis has some lovely tunes, but feels more like a compilation rather than an album. You've got to have some Elvis in the list of 1001 albums though, so I completely understand it. I'm also currently away so I can't be asked writing much more than that. 'In The Ghetto' is gorgeous though, easily my favourite on here.
In his late sixties revival period the King goes off to Chips Moman’s American Sound Studios in Memphis and records his last great run of tunes which includes the stunning Suspicious Minds as an associated single to this album. American Sound Studios was a run down little joint, Chips knew it had the vibe, when the King went for his first visit his verdict was "funky". To get a sense of just how bad things were for Elvis, Reggie Young from the house band recounted how they were really intrigued to be working with Elvis but nowhere near as excited as when they were working with Neil Diamond! Chip's knew the best way to get Elvis into it was to treat him as he would any artist and make him work for it, and it shows. A couple of quibbles, Elvis never let go of the banks of backing singers, who were redundant from the get go. And the Nashville strings are similarly unnecessary, I'd love to hear a clean version of In The Ghetto (I'm sure it's out there, send me a fax if you know). His take on Gentle on My Mind is very Elvis doing Elvis, and it works. When you know Glen Campbell set the benchmark for covers of that song, the King had quite a challenge, but he met it. It's an extraordinary song (apparently John Hartman wrote it after watching Dr Zhivago, no doubt stunned and inspired by Julie Christie...or was it Omar Sharif?) and Elvis gets how to take us through that journey to the cupped hands round the tin can, he makes it his song, beautiful. The country twang fits, I'm Moving On nicely shows Chips handy work with his Memphis cats, who can match the Nashville kind. This is an "album" in the true sense of the word and as much Chips Moman's as EP's.
Ordinarily I’m more likely to make fun of Elvis than appreciate him. But the first track really helped - this is the kind of Elvis I can really get into. Less so the slower tracks, especially the slow-dance ballads with the wavery voice. I did enjoy the other up-tempo ones, and “True Love Travels on a Gravel Road”.
I’ve never bought this bullshit about how great comeback-Elvis was. Sun sessions Elvis was great. Leiber & Stoller Elvis was great. Religious Elvis was great. But this album is the prelude to Vegas Elvis, which generally leaves me cold. Big voice, big ballads and some terribly ordinary material. And when he does cover good songs that had already been hits for others, he crucifies them. Hank Snow’s I’m Movin On is a classic (listen to the version by Matt Lucas) and John Hartford’s Gentle On My Mind was a big hit for Glen Campbell, & even Aretha recorded it. But Elvis does nothing for these songs. I love In The Ghetto, and I have no idea how Suspicious Minds & Kentucky Rain missed the cut from the original album. This record just doesn’t do it for me.
So, in my youth, I was a strictly Sun years Elvis fan. The fat. bloated, besequinned jumpsuit Elvis karate chopping his way across the stage, sweating out 'ludes and benzedrine did not do it for me. And then I met my wife, who was quite insistent that Vegas Elvis was the most glorious incarnation of Elvis. And she won me over. I mean, he is still fat and bloated, the jumpsuits are covered in sequins, and the karate moves are ridiculous, and he is still befuddled with the drugs... but it is also glorious in its overblown . He finds the real power in his voice. he is sentimental as all hell, and he wrings every drop of melodrama out of every note. And he kept doing some truly dreadful material right up until the end. But there are moments of real magnificence, such as his gospel material... and this. How he ended up recording some decent material with a decent band in a decent material seems like a glorious accident that his manager and minders (and his own terrible instincts) didn't manage to stuff up, for once. The cornerstone of the really great material from the last decade of his life basically these sessions. It's super cheesy, and somewhat overdone (which prevents it from being quite a funky as it might be), but this is, to my mind, probably the greatest individual Elvis album, especially when the bonus tracks are included. I used to hate it, then I liked it ironically, and now I just love it.
The King! A pretty cool record. Suspicious minds the standout. A few skippable tracks IMO. A solid record nonetheless.
I wasn't expecting to like this. A lot of the other classic rock artists that have come up have been very hit or miss for me. But apparently I'm an Elvis fan. Groovy, smooth, cinematic, beautiful. I'm on board.

Alright. I like the orchestra parts. It’s a little melodramatic at times, though.
Some good songs on the album, but felt like Presley focused more on singing in this album and simplified his guitar playing. Still enjoyed the listen, but not my favorite Presley album.

Peak Elvis in my book. This comes right off the '68 comeback special and more importantly in my opinion, getting out of the RCA studio and going to the local up and coming American Sound Studio and backed by house band, 'the Memphis Boys' gave Elvis that second sound that (re)made his image after his Sun Records years. Man-oh-man if only he could have gotten out of Tom Parker's grip and produced this music, he could've had a third or fourth go-round and nailed them all. 4.5/5.
I liked it, but I really don't think Elvis is much of an albums artist. Like there's no glue holding the songs together, they feel so individual.

Elvis has been one of the most surprising things I've learned from the list so far. Once you get past the hype and the stagecraft, his albums are truly dreadful. He slurs and lurches through this one, sounding just like the tuneless, aging barflies I've heard.imitate him a thousand times. No amount of hammy howling can give these songs any soul and his lyrics die the moment they leave his ludicrously curled lips. Music for annoying drunks.
Latter era Elvis. A more mature, smoother voice, which is perfect for the more mature, Memphis soul songs. This may be my favourite incarnation of Elvis. What 1969 Elvis lacks in raw energy compared to his early rock-n-roll, he makes up for in depth and emotion. He also looks and sounds at his most iconic. I am not an Elvis fan! At all! In large part because he stole music from black people without providing the appropriate credit, and because he only seemed "original" to white people at the time bc the music world was so segregated. But this is such a well produced and thoughtfully conceived album, a return to the soulful roots of Southern rock. So I'm a bit torn! I'd give it a 4 for production and concept, but a 2 for originality. So I guess it's a 3 ...

You really only need one Elvis album on the list, and this ain't it. I don't mind listening to the King, but this album is quite repetitive and droopy. And it sounds way behind the times for an album from 1969. Would have been cool to see Elvis steer into hippie psychedelic rock in his later career instead of going all "old man yells at cloud" country crooner. Suspicious Minds is a long time favourite song though, so I’m grading generously for that.
Music has changed so much since Elvis' time and its undeniable his influence on music. His iconic voice accompanying his provocative (for the time, now pretty mild) dance moves made him a legend. The songs on this album are mostly unexciting and bland. The few gems here do shine through.

Elvis... There's some of his greatest songs here when he was still able to weave some kind of spell. It's always going to be about the man himself with his people around him. It's a very stylised 70's production as you might expect. No-one did it like the man.

Classic Elvis
The 60's moved fast on Elvis. Rock and roll had be commandeered by the British invasion, with the likes of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who others eclipsing what Elvis had done in the 50's. As such, Elvis pivoted into an acting career for much of the 60's, though he would back these up with soundtracks. This stint in Hollywood was largely unremarkable. Aside from one gospel album in 1967 (that won him his first Grammy!), Presley was following a formulaic run of generic movies supported by generic soundtracks, year after year. By 1968 our dear Presley was in a slump. Moviegoers and the music charts were tired of him, so it was time for a comeback: Elvis is performing live again! The success from this live show would propel him back into the spotlight and give him the boost needed for his proper comeback album From Elvis In Memphis in 1969. This album is nothing like his back catalogue. Abandoning his pop rock, rock and roll, and gospel sounds and trading them in for SOUL. Presley moans and wails with so much emotion, these songs are worth their salt. If I saw Presley in a dozen movies over 8 years and then this was his comeback album, then you'd consider me a fan. Worth noting that this record is surrounded by psychedelic releases, with only Dusty Springfield being the other notable soul act of the day. Regardless, Elvis certainly stood out and it's warranted.
It's very impressive how modern an album from 1969 can sound. I'm not an Elvis fan, mainly because of his polemic use of black people's compositions getting all the credit as "the king," but I must assume this is historically important and an excellent album. Elvis's voice is incredible. "Power of My Love" and "Suspicious Minds" are incomparable classics.
Watched Elvis movie, then listened to this album. If movie is to be believed, a very sad story of evil and tragedy.
this is the kind of music elvis' voice was perfect for! i mean, he excelled in a lot of areas musically, but there's something lovely about his voice and how well it suits southern soul/blues/country. he brings such a tender quality to these songs. i'm glad an album of elvis' made this list when it doesn't contain the sound he was most well known for.
I knew it was coming, and today was the day. Elvis Presley. I am NOT a fan of Elvis by any stretch of the word, so I have kind of internally been dreading the first of what I assume is many Elvis albums on this project. Fortunately, this is not "Hound Dog" Elvis or "Blue Suede Shoes" Elvis; this is a more soulful Elvis that I personally find much more tolerable. Given that, I ultimately I found this album pretty inoffensive and enjoyable. It wasn't particularly buzzing with excitement, but it wasn't outright boring, either. The production was surprisingly good for 1969, but I didn't really get a "live" energy from this. Elvis definitely sounds great for a live album, though! Some songs that really did stand out to me, as a non-Elvis listener were Power of My Love, Any Day Now, and Suspicious Minds (which, in my uneducated opinion, is among his all time bests, even though I tend to prefer the Dwight Yoakam version).

I am far from an Elvis Presley expert but this probably has some of my favourite Elvis Pressley standards....In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds, (though the Allmusic reviewed version does not include this cut so not sure that I should consider it), Gentle on My Mind (not really familiar with Elvis' rendition but he absolutely kills it!). Plus there are some others that I had not heard previously that are great as well (Wearin' That Loved On Look, It Keeps Right on Hurtin', Only The Strong Survive, I'm Movin' On and others). Throughout the plaing, production, back-up vocals and production are quite simply outstanding. Even if I don't include the stellar Suspicious Minds This is still a no-brainer 5 star album.
It was a different time. Whenever I hear most Elvis songs I'm shocked at how popular I hear he was and that he caused so much outrage 50+ years of popular music and culture later he's just a crooner. Not a bad record, though.

I get that Elvis was highly influential and popular back in his day, but not in 1969. Take a look at the list of albums released in 69, 68, 67.. Surely there are other, earlier works from him that are more essential. These songs are fine, but 1001 albums you must listen to should set the bar a bit higher than 'fine'. In 1969 Moondog released his highly acclaimed self-titled album of experimental jazz/classical and minimalist fusion. It's avant-garde, spacey, yet strangely accessible. More importantly it's significantly different from anything else on this list. Moondog is not on this list. Go listen to Moondog instead. There are 2 other better Elvis albums on here anyway.
My late father was a big fan of Elvis, so it was nice to be reminded of Dad today. I wonder what he would have said about this album. I knew two songs from this album. I’m not a big Elvis person and I think this was the first time I’d ever deliberately listened to him. Elvis is one of those cultural things that I feel like you don’t need to even have an opinion on. He’s his own thing entirely.

This was fun but turned into a chore quickly. I found the background got repetitive and Elvis's vocal flourishes got absurd after a while. I think the phenomenon of Elvis was about more than just the music.

It would end with me dropping to the floor, exhausted and getting loads of women’s underwear and M&Ms lashed at me. One for the Car: I’m Movin’ On Made my drive home from work a bloody good treat.

I have never been a huge Elvis fan, mostly due to lack of exposure, but this album has changed that. It is truly captivating. The passionate emotion present in the songs, the theatricality, and the crooning tone make the performances and performer both larger than life and almost painfully intimate. Standout songs are Long Black Limousine and Suspicious Minds.
Standard Elvis - nothing suprising or diferent to expectations. If this is live, as it claims to be, then the man could sing - but that isn't really news to anyone. Not being a fan this left me unmoved, but respectful.
Elvis’ voice is undeniable, as is his historical importance. I don’t know if it’s just me or the wrong moment, but I didn’t feel any particular emotional highs (except for In the Ghetto).

Now seems like a good time to point out that Elvis didn't write songs, so while he may have been the greatest cover artist of all time, he was a cover artist nonetheless. At least the songs on this album weren't huge hits like some of Elvis's earlier albums. This album is pleasant enough. The production is great. It has a live feel while still sounding very clean. Elvis's voice was still holding up great at this point in his career, though it's a bit quiet on some of the songs. There aren't a lot of what I would consider to be standout tracks on this album, other than In The Ghetto, but all of the songs are good. It's a solid album to play in the background 4/5

Yeah I just don’t get Elvis. Maybe he was super charming or something but without the context and the visual it seems like pub signer covers songs. The Ghetto almost push it up to mediocrity but not quite.

I can't get past the fact that I think of Elvis as just... always sounding dated to me. Although the Mrs. doesn't hear it, and maybe that's just her hearing it all the time when she was growing up. But the album does have some of Elvis' strongest material ("Suspicious Minds" is probably my favorite of his pieces), and the cringiest (ugh, "In The Ghetto" just does NOT hold up well today.). Gentle On My Mind... I am familiar with the song, because I remember hearing a joke in a comic once, which always stuck with me. It was only today that I realize they were making fun of this song. "It's knowing that your door is always open and your furniture is gone..." which struck me as comical. Maybe it's just with the back-up singers, and how they're used, it just all sounds like something my Dad was interested in. But I've felt that way with all the Elvis albums we've heard. So... yeah.
Torn on this one. It's a 4 for sure, couldn't decide whether to give it a 5. It's missing a bit of Elvis' energetic vocals and I can't tell if that's because he was older and/or going for a more mature sound or because of his cold while recording the album. But the mature instrumental sound is pretty appealing - the Memphis Boys provide great backing (I especially love the bass work on this album). It's a real smooth and easy listen but another knock might be a lack of undeniable big tunes, with the exception of the closer In the Ghetto (a true classic). Maybe if the non-album singles like Suspicious Minds (my absolute favorite Elvis tune, hands-down), Don't Cry Daddy, or Kentucky Rain had actually been on this album I'd go even higher. Still a very good album.

Like most of Elvis' oeuvre, this has peaks and troughs, but because it's Elvis, on this album the troughs are still higher than many artists peaks.
I enjoyed a good portion of the songs, but many still fell flat and I lost interest in them quickly. After 16 songs without a theme or common thread that the album is pushing, it gets a little tedious to keep listening. Still not bad by any means though. 6/10
I know he make a career by stealing from black artists, and I won’t go into the grooming, but damn, he was able to translate emotion through songs really well. Long Black Limousine, After Lovin You, and Suspicious Minds were my favorites from the album. Kinda found it disturbing he had created a fantasy in which his wife was newly dead and his kids just wanted to help him find a new mommy (Don’t Cry Daddy) and a serial cheater demanding obedience from his woman (Wearin That Loved On Look) left a bad taste in my mouth.

Long black limo, after loving you, suspicious minds is good. Must admit this is the first time I've listened to an Elvis album start to finish. Never really considered myself a fan. Turns out I didn't even know Suspicious Minds was an Elvis song and I love it! Long Black Limo and After Loving You are both solid tracks as well. I wouldn't say I'm converted, but I'm definitely coming around on Elvis.

Wistful and almost melancholic takes from the iconic King. The one thing that drags it a bit is the overly-glossy production and orchestration that sometimes turns sweet to saccharine.
A very wistful album in my mind. Early Elvis feels sexy and cutting edge. This era is reaching back to grab his childhood, and I can tell that he is basically sitting in the corner of the bar of America, weeping and playing a guitar as the bar is being renovated.

Great album. Wish there had been more thematic variety. I did get a bit of that from In The Ghetto and Don't Cry Daddy. The same sound kind of wore on me after a while and some the songs blended together a bit but it was an excellent performance.

This music reminds me of my dad, in a good way. Various Elvis songs played in the background through my childhood and it was always nice, easy listening music. This is no different. However, I don't think music like this will ever be a consistent part of my listening rotation.
Couple gems on there like suspicious minds, and overall great album. Some songs of his I’d never heard despite being a pretty big fan.
I couldn't love the sound of Elvis's voice more than I do. He could sing whatever he wanted and I would listen.

the last thing my mental state needs is listening to an elvis album. As someone who grew up listening to 90s and 2000s counterculture music this sounds like the source for every backwards deconstruction of rock n' roll tropes. If I didn't know for a fact that 90% of elvis' music was stolen from people lower on the social ladder than him this would be interesting to me. Otherwise it is a boring relic of the past that doesn't stand up to the present in a way that Pet sounds, Velvet Underground & Nico, or Close to the edge do. 3.1/10

i was pretty confused about this album's sound. so much going on, so many instruments, so many different musical ideas attempting to be expressed all at once. then i saw on wikipedia that this was his comeback album after doing a bunch of movie soundtracks suddenly, it all made sense.

I've never been a big Elvis fan to begin with, and this album didn't change my mind. The songs were ho-hum.
I don't have much of an opinion either way with Elvis but on this album there were some good tracks, a couple of great ones and then a bit meh.

Pretty clearly a late-career album, and one I have nothing bad to say about. Elvis-as-product is more interesting historically than musically, and that shows up a little bit on the recording. But he gets into the pocket on more tracks than not, which means the iconic voice, classic band work, and divine instrumental flourishes just beneath the surface.
Good timing, what with the Elvis biopic out in cinemas. In The Ghetto always gets me.

A lovely live Elvis album. The mix is a little drum heavy in places, but it's fun nonetheless.
Not enough variation, too many croony ballads (my least favourite type of Elvis song). Also, In the Ghetto is incredibly pretentious, pandering, and borderline offensive. Wild that it's the only hit from this.

Don’t mind Elvis but nothing really jumped off the page for me except for In The Ghetto. But that just reminded me of Eric Cartland’s version from South Park. I did listen to Suspicious Minds because it’s great but doesn’t count to the score.

I dunno man, Elvis just doesn't do it for me; I think his voice and style is just too much of a cliche by now. It's not bad; I enjoyed many of the songs to some extent, but it just sounds too generic.

There's some classics on there and I can see how Elvis was a so radical and moving for so many people in the 60s but I just find most of his stuff so cringey and boring. Especially this album maybe the rock and roll I find more interesting and fun but this is such a bore.
I really enjoyed this but I am disappointed it didn't sound like it was live at all! It would have been nice to sense that atmosphere more. This was a more ballady album I sensed, which I liked - but I would have liked some more upbeat ones
Elvis is a weird one for me. He obviously has some bangers but I find it hard to listen to him without getting some boring ballady song. For the king of Rock and Roll there isn't enough Rock. But this album was pretty good.

Well, it's Elvis again. There comes a point in a lot of the more/most famous artists in which I wonder whether the album is considered important or great in and of itself or simply due to the artist? Is it even possible to distill the difference at some point? Probably not - so...the music. I like it quite a bit more than the previous/much older Elvis release. The more up-tempo songs are decent; notably the first track "Wearin' That Loved On Look" which according to wiki was the first track Elvis recorded that had electric bass. Gave it a more modern (for the time) rock feel. Songs in that up-tempo/blues ilk I liked well-enough (e.g. "Power Of My Love"); the slower ones just are really not that good. And ok yeah it's "ELVIS" but are these really groundbreaking or even any good or distinctive? Do they stand out as "better" than anything actually original (Elvis never wrote anything as far as I know) or was it his good-lookin'-white-dude bona fides that got him here? Going down a different path with that line of thinking :) to be sure so again all I can rate is the music. It's fine, it's ok, but for this style I'd rather listen to Little Richard or Chuck Berry or Roy Orbison. 5/10 2 stars

A classic but nothing stood out to me too much (perhaps wasn't listening closely enough)
With a large backing band that includes horns and a choir of harmony vocals, Elvis runs through some so-so material. It's not bad but the problem for me is this is this is the start of the Vegas period beloved of Elvis impersonators. I really like Elvis but his earlier material (especially his vocals) are so much sweeter, grittier and basically better than anything here.

Enjoyed listening to a bit of Elvis. There are some slow crooner tracks littered throughout the album, which always seemed to be followed by an upbeat track, redeeming itself. Overall, a good variety.

I can think of no other artist, with the possible exception of Dolly Parton, to sing songs that are so blatantly attempting to fabricate an emotional response in the listener and yet, despite this cheap trick and an initial roll of the eyes at the audacity, by the end of the track you’re bawling your eyes out. The man sure sold the songs. I know what you’re trying to do, Elvis. You’re not going to get me this time… oh damn why am I crying?

Easy listening but let's not pretend Elvis wasn't 95% filler (a percentage so high just because of the amount he churned out) and this album is no different. 'In the Ghetto' is obviously a classic but there's nothing else here to get too excited about.
Elvis just kind of exists in a "of course he's good, but it's not my kind of music" place for me along with people like Frank Sinatra and Buddy Holly. That being said, this was pleasant and enjoyable. There were some weaker songs, but the highs were pretty high.

I liked the crooning Elvis more than I expected. Lots of slower material compared to the Rock n Roll 50s period with plenty of ballads. It is a record you do have to be in the right mood to listen with enjoyment. I was lucky over the weekend I had time to listen to it three times. I never listened to any of the material on this so was quite interesting listening to Elvis completely blind. Favourite song was definitely Suspicious Minds with In The Ghetto and Long Black Limousine not far behind.
really liked this album. I never considered myself an Elvis lover but he is a great musician.
Elvis never wrote any of his songs but he definitely knew how to sing them.
Best Song: Suspicious Minds. At least this one seems to have a bit of hubris? it isn't just more of Elvis's overwhelming "you'll love me no matter what" ego. Worst Song: Only The Strong Survive. The chorus of "only the strong survive" is wholly undermined when the verses reveal that he's actually talking about girls not loving him, not any actual hardship. Overall: Maybe Elvis is a "you had to be there" type of talent. Listening now, I just find myself thinking that there are so many better musicians who can produce this type of music with much more authenticity. Elvis's music sounds like it was stolen, overproduced, and then sold back as a safe and sanitized version of something that ought to have been more raw. He sings like he's playing with house money.

Love me some Elvis and his buttery voice! Not my favorite set of Elvis songs (I prefer his earlier stuff) but I'd listen to The King sing the phonebook and be happy. Suspicious Minds is such an A+ song
It was fine. I'm not an Elvis fan but it wasn't a bad listen.
I generally enjoyed this album, I don't know if I'd ever listen to 40+ minutes of Elvis in a row again but I understand why so many adore him - he's a crooner with simple blues sounds. I can't listen to In the Ghetto without thinking of New Girl so that's always a plus.
