There's no doubt that Jeff Beck is a monster on guitar, and this album is squarely in the mix when we think about how the blues were kickstarted and rebooted by British rockers in the 60s. Solid blues-infused rock with some classic mid-60s stylings all around. Overall, I'm not wild about the album just because some of those 60s pop and rock music elements, including the psychedelia, aren't my favorite aesthetically. But I can appreciate its place.

A bit too sixties spirit infused for my taste, outlives its welcome, but some lovely guitar work (no wonder, given it's Jeff Beck). Also, probably the winner of the ugliest album cover ever competition.

Don't love it, don't hate it. Many of the songs are too short and simple to feel like they explore any topic well, or they just repeat a simple line over and over for 80% of the runtime. 4/10

Early psychedelic rock that honestly is rather boring and definitely not on the level of some of the other 60s bands. It just lacks something, whether it be the more guitar-driven and screeching guitars from Cream's Disraeli Gears or the weird intensity from 13th Floor Elevator's or unique keyboard sound from the Doors, I don't know but it is just rather unimpressive in comparison. The Yardbirds may be having a party, but I feel like I am just looking at some people tripping, looking into the wall, and they haven't offered me anything to make the trip with them.

It’s ok - a bit generic and forgettable - kind of wish washy between the who, the kinks, the Beatles and Brit blues.

Some really great tracks and then a ton of filler. I think if you were to trun the fat and cut this release in half it would be a pretty impressive album but in its current state I question why it even deserves to be on this list. The mixing was also really inconsistent but at least they had the decency to release the mono recordings. Favorite tracks: Lost Women, Over Under Sideways Down, The Nazz Are Blue, Hot House of Omagararashid

It was OK. Nothing special, quite disappointed really. Also what is it with these like 30 track albums with 3-4 versions of the same song?

There's nothing bad on this record, but it reads as totally standard English bluesy rock. Some of the guitar work is nice. Perhaps the Yardbirds were a prerequisite for bands who move me more, but that fact is not obvious in the listening.

"Oh, look, it's another blues rock album from the 60's". Expertly played, but oh so utterly boring. Yawn. 2/5.

Parts of this album are nice, and Jeff Beck is a great guitarist. But some of the songs I found myself distracted by confusion, trying to determine if the sounds I was hearing actually worked or not. Also a day later I’m finding this album was mostly forgettable.

September 20, 2021 Feels like generic 60s rock. Not super into it. Vaguely like the Beatles but worse and with more blues. The stereo album was included too but I just couldn't take listening to more of this.

One of the worst mixed records I have ever heard. I can't stomach it, my left earcup is dying. From what I can hear, it's decent blues rock on the best tracks. 2/5.

This album is a decent 60's psychedelic rock album by The Yardbirds. In my opinion, the songs weren't that attention grabbing, but I could tell that the band has talent.

This is as 60s as it gets. The twang-tuning, the 'deep' lyrics...not quite for me.

Just ok

Lost Women. What a Bassline groove. Solid stuff. Then it goes straight into over under sideways down. It's a very very fun album. I found myself tapping my foot and grooving. Happy to have found. A few songs off this will for sure get added to a playlist for when I'm in the mood to jam.

This one starts out pretty strong. I like Lost Woman a lot, Over Under Sideways Down is pretty great, The Nazz Are Blue, I Can't Make Your Way, and Rack My Mind are all pretty good. But man, the last three tracks on this just take a severe nosedive. Turn into Earth is like some bad high school poetry. Then a sort of environmental protest song? Maybe? And then a Satan=$$$ song? Hoo man. Yeah, no, those three just about tank the whole thing for me.

2.4 star. Some nice guitar accounts for the majority of the rating. All the songs sound the same.

Unfortunately this album and band are a victim of their own success. Nearly every style of successful rock band since has copied something from their music and as a result this album sounds tired and all way too familiar. It makes it hard to rate on its merits but here goes...obviously the guitar leads of Jimmy Page are the most distinctive sound on first listen but there is a great rhythm section as well helping with the melodies. At time of release this would have been a very modern sounding album as the blend of blues and hard rock merged together seamlessly for pretty much the first time, in a commercial sense anyway, and I guess that really is what it should be scored on. So for that it gains cred, but for pure enjoyment today it is kind of old and a chore to get through. So for that it loses marks. 2 Stars

Like most pop bands of the 60s it makes sense to compare them to the Beatles; these guys aren’t more inventive or exciting.

It's nuts that this band existed. But this list is like 90% 60#-70s classic rock and my enjoyment of this kind of music is slowly eroding. I need something different and new. Not a bad project but it's just kind of a drop in the pond, 4/8.

Unsurprisingly the guitar is the star here. Beyond that ‘average’ is probably being generous. ‘Farewell’ is abysmal. Jeff’sBoogie is an obvious highlight (having mo bocals), as is discovering that the Pussycat Dolls lifted from ‘He ‘s always there’

As always, credit where credit is due: 'Hot House of Omagararshid' is a great song name. It was very odd having to start from track 15 on the record in order to cover the original tracklist. I listened to this while working, and it made such little impression on me that I only realised it was done when I was halfway through a track and realised Bob Marley was singing. I don't really feel like giving it a second try, so by default: 1/5

Same old 1960s blues rock. Painfully boring, desperately unoriginal, nowhere near as special as it thinks it is and just like all the other bands that sound exactly the same (and there are loads), it is as racially insensitive as can be. 1 star just on principle alone.

60s boomer psychedelic rock with a band synonymous with Clapton, so you know what to expect Fair play that there is actually No Clapton on this , but it’s still shit Beck is a great guitarist though I can like weird sounding albums , but albums trying to be wired and wacky less so The only bit I actually liked was the start of “Ever since the world began “ as its sound like a less heavy version of a Sabbath song

Couldn't find it particularly interesting. Seemed kind of thin loose blues rock. Very disappointed as kind of a jimi fan. I guess it makes me conscious of how good the other players and the chemistry of led zep are.

This music makes me annoyed. I really don't enjoy it, especially when I realized that there are sound imbalances making the vocals come through more on my right ear in some songs.

Definitely get the strong 60s vibe, love the drums and funky bass lines. Not really for me though unfortunately.

genuinely dont understand why this is on the list

Look, I am sympathetic to this, I do get it - for an entire generation, hearing these guys crank their guitars up to 11 and put a new spin on an existing format must have been pretty thrilling. What I mean is, the guitar gymnastics and gritty dynamics must have distracted people from the fact that this is all just incredibly formulaic 12-bar fare. Sadly, I can't go back in time and experience that excitment for myself, just the mind-numbing effects of the uninventive, predictable song structures I've heard over and over again for almost 50 years. Great band, a tight band, and one which has, on other albums, trod a much more inventive path, but I can't really get on board with this material. Pet Sounds also came out in 1966, for fuck's sake. Also of note, there are a lot of 60s albums - Beatles albums in particular - where the unconventional early use of stereo imaging adds a lot of charm, here the production (particularly on headphones) seems to work against the material. One track in particular seemed to be all vocals and tambourine in one channel, with guitars in the other while all the other instruments were relegated to bubbling around in a swamp somewhere below, totally detached from the rest of the song. Weird. I'd like to give it two stars, but honestly there was just nothing that grabbed me as interesting.

Sorta always knew this band as the one that featured Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page for a time. Neither's on this album so it would obviously be advantageous to look as a showcase for Jeff Beck's guitar work whom I've never tried to get into. Nothing is standing out to me. I have a lot of catching up to do with the Blues despite my vast love for the Stones and Bob Dylan. I like "Jeff's Boogie' alright and not just because Destroyer could be referencing it on Dan's Boogie. I listened to then stereo version and hope to listen to the mono before I submit the rating but we shall see. Feeling like I might have to give this one star to accurately portray my statistics at the end of this 3 year journey.

Just when a good track came along they’d spoil it by being a bit strange.

The look of this album cover perfectly reflects the listening experience of this album. Ugly, confusing and a lack of effort. Singing is not great and the guitars can be decent at times. Second song seems like it doesn't know which tempo it wants to be in. As a result feels disruptive. If there were no lyrics in this album it might be more enjoyable with more space to jam and experiment. Some songs, like What Do You Want, repeat far too many times. Annoying. Almost like a broken record stuck on repeat. If you were patient enough to get to the last song of this album you'll find the second half of the last song, Ever Since The World Began, it's actually not bad. But still falls victim to it's repetitiveness again. "Don't need Money" is now stuck in my head. Thank you Yardbirds cheerio.

Honestly. This is the first album I’ve DNFed. I just am not interested and it’s so insanely long. WHY 31 TRACKS DUDE????? Maybe if I could have gotten through the whole thing it would be like a two cause it’s not offensive hideous music, it’s just very so much boring. But I don’t think I can give something I didn’t even make it through more than a one. The only note I have is that as someone who had NEVER listened to Fleetwood Mac and have no idea what they sound like, the first few tracks of this album is what I imagine they sound like. So do what you will with that.

Nothing spectacular.

I get that blues records making it over to England were a big deal and this was the interpretative result, and fully understand their significance, but man blues based guitar driven music from the 60s is just so boring to me. Not for me at all.

In the immortal words of Henry Rollins, “The drummer can’t drum, the bass player can’t play. The guitarist has one riff. The singer is this utter buffon.” A part of me wants to be forgiving. On first listen, Side A wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but it was just boring ‘60s blues pastiche and/or 60’s pop that goes in my ears and out in an instant, with slight psychedelic touches here and there that aren’t to my taste. I’m far from a fan of this style, so I wasn’t going to praise this, but I wasn’t mad about it, either. But then Side B just turned that up to 11, with all the worst cliches of that era, and I almost lost my mind. Like, to the point where I revisited Side A and realized after two painful active listens that, no, I hated that too, I was just trying to restrain myself from being a hater. All the little tchotchkes in the background, the limited range and uncharismatic vocals, the rhythm section is uninspired with cluttered bass riffs and mediocre drummer, and Beck…I see what he’s doing, but to me, it both sounds basic and messy, and dare I say it, immature. I can’t imagine this being anyone’s favorite record, unless you know too much about reel-to-reels and smell a bit too much like skunk weed. A painful listen and a boring listen – the worst combination.

Listened Before? N An interesting crossover and landmark record. Pretty trippy and hard rocking for it's time. I enjoyed listening but it suffers from an unfortunate issue with me: I refuse to support Eric Clapton. So while I did enjoy it, I won't listen again and give him any more royalties. Eat it, Eric. No point in going song-by-song. As much as I appreciate the import of The Yardbirds to Rock history, this album didn’t offer even one track that I’m interested in reliving (ok…maybe “He’s Always There,” but nothing else). A swing and a miss for me.

Just couldn't keep my attention. A couple of good tracks but this album didn't seem to know what it wanted to be. I couldn't pin what mood I'd want to be in if I wanted to listen to this again, and that's a hypothetical 'if' as I won't be doing that

It was 60's definitely. And it was catchy in places. I didn't want to rush out and buy it but it was a pleasant listen. Wouldn't mind never hearing it again though.

Must have been cool at the time, but just awful today. Ragged, meandering, amateurish.

Felt like I was listening to England’s version of The Beach Boys slash 50s band. Catchy tunes but not a fan. I did appreciate the band letting their toddlers design the album cover. Better there than drawings on the wall. Liked Lost Women and Over, Under, Sideways, Down. But then it went anther direction.
