Reviews (page 8 of 13)
Nice compilation that shows a talented and young Davis. I liked it. It has a nice mix of energetic and smooth.
As the album name suggests, Miles Davis is the king of cool. I very much enjoyed this album, the vocals on the last studio track came out of nowhere and surprised me in a great fashion. As an extremely uncultured soul, this kind of cigar smoking, smooth jazz actually gives me nostalgic Tom and Jerry vibes from my youth. I kind of wish it didn't and kind of glad it does. Anyway, I love how relaxed I feel listening, cheers Miles.
Miles changing the face of be-bop and jazz. As you do. BT: Move, Jeru, Rouge
Brilliant album, thoroughly enjoyed having it on while I worked. I would have liked a few more tracks with vocals on it but other than that, loved it.
Exactly what it says on the tin 😎 Exceptional listen, sounding somewhere between big band/swing and bop with it's frankly extensive list of performers on here (16 in rotation, to be exact). Although released in 1957, recordings were from 1949 and 1950 which was years before Davis would begin forming his quintets, so the songs can get a little busy at times. I'd reckon this is an overall easy listen though, and pulling all these singles together on the one album is certainly appreciated. This here is jazz 101, so don't skip your fundamentals
I always find jazz enjoyable, but I'm no expert.
jazzy!
Wonderful, enjoyable, classic. favorite track: venus de milo
muy agradable
Nice riffing. Proper foot tapper and finger clicker
jaaaaaaazz.
Great!
Fun album. Requires a certain mood but i'm in to it.
Probably the first jazz album I’ve sat down and listened to all at once. Need to that more often
Tres bon album jazz.
Not as compelling as other Miles Davis records
Definite toe tapping going on
I have a soft spot for this kind of music. This may not be the real birth of cool, but it certainly is cool music, and great for programming concentration.
FINALLY another good jazz album
Super lekkere jazz, genieten
Great jazz album
Experimental jazz is not what you want for coffeehouse vibes, it's too interesting to relegate to the background. This album has urgency that demands the full attention of the listener. If you can't provide that for these 32 minutes, move along and listen to something else.
Overall solid classic jazz. Good, but can't judge more than that.
The west coast hasn’t sounded this good since…
a great snowy playlist
It's neat to come back to this album after listening to more of Miles's middle and later career stuff. It has a more traditional sound (not that folks would have said that at the time), but you can hear how much flavor Miles brings. 4/5
Guter Jazz
As good as I recall.
Great jazz
Cool
2/19 Real cool. Standout Tracks: Moon Dreams, Budo, Deception, Boplicity
Completely inoffensive, nice background jazz. Can't compare to an album that makes me feel something though 6.5 / 10
Good background music for cooking or a dinner party. Can’t say that it’s my favorite jazz record ever, and I’d be rating on just the name alone if I gave it higher than a 3/5. But a good record.
Had a couple songs I really liked, namely ‘Moondreams’ ‘Venus de Milo’ and ‘Godchild’ I’m really not that big into jazz and usually enjoy a more softer melody when I am listening to it, so the trumpet can be too loud for me at times. Still the record is bright and fun, I enjoyed having it in the background while making lunch!
This isn't kind of blue, it's disjointed by comparison due to it being a compilation across many years but it's still good music but not a great album
ah jazz I simply do not connect with you I believe that once you were an innovative sound radically different from other music around. but now you have become elevator music back ground music for a waiting room you all sound the same to me 3/5
Dude needs to learn how to break his songs up
Fun and jazzy, not as weird as I would have liked
A little underwhelming overall but still a nice listen
I wish I liked this more. I can tell the musicians are talented, but I just wasn’t moved. The funny thing is after the album finished a song (It Never Entered My Mind) by the Mikes Davis Quintet came on that I liked a lot better.
There's nothing about this that I don't like. It's clearly great music. I saved it to my library. It doesn't affect me nearly as profoundly as it is supposed to, according to Objective Truths About Music.
I don't feel like I have the familiarity to really appreciate this style of music. Pleasant to listen to, but not deeply engaging.
Jazz is not the type of music that I would actively seek out, so in that regard, listening to this album is precisely the sort of experience I am looking for by working through these 1001 albums. Aside from vocal jazz (such as Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald), I have yet to find a jazz album that has truly blown my socks off - and this record continues that run. "Birth Of The Cool" is a compilation album that brings together tracks originally recorded over three sessions in 1949 and 1950, initially released in the 10-inch 78-rpm format. Because of this, the tracks are all brief, lasting around three minutes each. While it is a pleasant enough listen, it does not stir the soul or really engage me in any meaningful way. Three stars. Side one 1 "Move" (3/5) 2 "Jeru" (3/5) 3 "Moon Dreams" (3/5) 4 "Venus De Milo" (3/5) 5 "Budo" (3/5) 6 "Deception" (3/5) Side two 1 "Godchild" (3/5) 2 "Boplicity" (3/5) 3 "Rocker" (3/5) 4 "Israel" (3/5) 5 "Rouge" (3/5) 6 "Darn That Dream" (3/5) Total - 36 Average - 3 361/1001 192/361 albums reviewed were new to me.
Great but so many better miles Davis albums
Eh bah, je me fais chier.
Miles Davis has "Miles" better but this is still decent, first three songs do kind of carry but I enjoyed most of this. Very chill jazz
i liked it. good morning background music. i enjoyed it more than "Bitches Brew"
The definition of smooth jazz. Thoroughly enjoyed
I can easily admit that this is a pretty great jazz record, but I think it’s taught me something about the limits of what recorded music I actually enjoy listening to. Birth Of The Cool is, of course, a pretty remarkable achievement when you consider that its recordings date back as far as 1949, and it’s fantastic that recording technology had gotten to the point where we can hear such high-fidelity reproduction of music that old. And being from 1949, this is still relatively ‘grounded’ jazz that doesn’t stray too far from its dance roots, however ambitious it was for the time…you can definitely still bob your head to it! I think my issue is that its heavily improvisational approach loses a lot when recorded, at least for me; the magic of improvisation is in coming up with all this music in the moment, which I think is vastly better appreciated in a live performance, where it’s being created right in front of you. So…as a document of some truly genius-level improvisation & soloing laid over great jazz grooves, this record is fantastic, but I don’t feel it translates to a gut-level ‘entertaining’ record.
Nice
album #79 a very lovely album to listen to. i like how in each song the lead instruments sound like they are singing :) beautifully smooth and majorly influential. thanks for the horns! ಄ favourite track(s): moon dreams, venus de milo ಄ least favourite track(s): (fuck) israel ಄ album rating: ★★★.5☆☆ ಄ number of albums left to review: 1,010 ಄ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 38 (+1 Birth of The Cool) ಄ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 16 ಄ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 63
enjoyable
it's not bad but not my vibe ig. im not a fan of jazz music
It's fine and listenable. It's not for me to understand what sets this apart from the oceans of jazz. I'm not going to give stars for whatever incumbent cultural cache because it would be dishonest. The album just kind of went by but was an enjoyable listen.
Jazz typically not my go to listen. Overall sounded good and was an listen through.
First listen
Cool but not my style yet
After putting this album on, every once in a while a track would come on that pricked up my ear and piqued my curiosity. It was inevitably the Thelonious Monk or Bill Evans song that Youtube had served up to me after the album ended.
Alright.
Jazz but chill and not weird. Has a song called Israel
Doesn't feel like his best, but still enjoyable listen
I mean, yeah. It's pretty standard jazz. I've never heard anything by Miles Davis I actively disliked, and that's no exception here. But I'm surprised that this is one of the four on the list. I don't feel it's nearly as noteworthy as the other three (In A Silent Way, Kind of Blue, Bitches Brew) and I'd rather have it swapped out with something like...I dunno, Get Up With It? Or maybe that Agharta live album? That'd be nice.
Sape
Havent listened to anything like this before. Loved it perfect for dinner parties. Was a bit hectic when trying to cook and it wasn't going exactly to plan though.
I'm not evolved enough, this jazz sounds like other jazz
The first that got better and greater with each album.
Sounds like jazz to me. If I were smarter, maybe it'd blow me away, but I am dumb, so it just sounds like jazz. Prefer Bitches Brew or Kind of Blue, really.
Quite fun. Very cool indeed
I like this a good bit. Didn’t really move me but I’m not a jazz guy.
Not gonna lie, I can't get my brain around bop, so even thought the talent on this disc is immeasurable, the final product doesn't really resonate with me. Split decison then.
I have no right to review Jazz. I enjoy listening to it but I don't know the difference between Miles Davis, John Coltrane, or Charlie Parker. I liked this though but not as much as another couple of his albums
A nice listen. The songs were much shorter than I expected from a jazz album. Jeru, Moon Dream, and Israel were my standouts. 6.6/10
I'd listened to a bit of jazz before this and more because of the list, and I've generally found I don't like it. The notable exception is A Love Supreme, and unfortunately this won't become the second jazz album I like
I am not cray about jazz, but I can definitely see his brilliance and genius.
The average person cannot see music. This album made me immediately visualize colors, primarily blues. Pretty incredible. Love Miles Davis.
Yup, it sounds like jazz
Not super groovy but not super noisy. No complaints here.
This album didn’t make me feel much, so a little different from some of his other efforts. Rating: 5/10 Favorite Song: Moon Dreams
I liked it better than the last one
First time I listened to jazz by choice. It had some fun moments I felt like dancing to. Definitely can understand the appeal it can have for some people. For me it felt like background music in a vintage movie with a specific vibe. The songs felt a bit similar but that could just be a me thing. It was nice but I just felt like I should be doing something while listening to it. Favorite songs where Jeru, Boplicity and Rouge. I give it 3,3
Not into Jazz but I guess it's good?
Not for me Favourite tracks: Moon Dreams
just sad betty davis didn’t make it here but enjoyed this nevertheless
A classic through and through
Busy. Warm. Over far too quickly.
When this popped up, I was excited being familiar with Miles Davis, but not familiar this album. And honestly let with it got the full weekend, I thought I could savor it. But unfortunately, this one left me with a feeling of meh. This is the hundred-notes-a-run Miles and not the patient, thoughtful one. I'd love to give it above a 3, but I just can't
Classic big band jazz. Enjoyed the faster numbers but not such a fan of the slower ones
Not really my txpe of music
Jazz is gonna be a tough sell for me. It's good but it blends in to the background.
6/10 Cool Jazz. Listening live probably amazing, as a recording it's nice, nothing more.
Very nice and fun jazz
Solid. A high 3. Gets better the more you listen.
It is good, but as with other albums in this genre it all just sort of becomes background to my ears.
Undeniably cool.
The background to some of my fave b-&w movies. Really enjoyed this
not that fun
not as good as kind of blue
If you like instrumental jazz, you'll love this. I have tried over and over to get into it but I just don't dig it. I prefer vocal jazz. I really like Moon Dream a lot. The rest of the songs I just didn't jive with. BUT, you can def appreciate the talent. If you like that kind of thing.
I get it but I just don't really care for this kind of jazz. Sorry Miles.
Pretty good but nothing really stuck with me immediately.
jazz clasico, ta bueno 3/5
3 stars for being an icon. Just not all that into Jazz
Another cool guy
pleasant. maybe I am a philistine idk
A decent jazz record. I feel like I lack the understanding to truly appreciate it as it should be. Also I know it's a compilation record but the tracks really worked together as a whole, but I kind of feel that's just the nature of how the genre sounds to me. Looking forward to the other Miles Davis entries on this list as this was my first one.
Good as you'd expect
Rocker
Jazz... Not for me
Nice, but not memorable
i like it.
bit jazzy, but solid
Nice, I liked it, but would only replay it in the right setting.
Everything here is good at being what it is - fun, upbeat, pop jazz - and at the same time it's obvious why Davis got bored with it. The gulf between this and *Kind of Blue* is just a little too much to bear, as unfair as maybe that is.
Decent jazz album, good vibes, but definitely big band/swing feeling. Not as big a fan of a full instrumental album but did enjoy Darn that Dream. Unfortunately found myself ready to move on about 2/3rds of the way through.
Pretty good album, didn’t enjoy it as much as some of the other jazz. I’ve heard on this though. Sounds a little bit derivative, but maybe that’s because it was one of the first. Three stars.
Miles Davis. Interesting. Is this another purely jazz album. I'm gonna be honest there does not need to be this much instrumental jazz on here. I'm sure it's all great and very influential but it's all that jazz, baby. Israel what 💔 Palestine 🆙. What are we doing here. I don't wanna listen to this much jazz in my free time. I gotta be honest. Don't gaf. Favourite: Boplicity Least favourite: Israel (on principle)
Really great jazz album. Not my favorite genre, but this is an excellent entry from the field. 3.5 stars, came quite close to 4 for me.
jazek
good for studying to easy jazz hihihiha
I listened to the first 22 minutes of my way to work... grey, cold and it the music didn't do much. I listened to rest after work, in the sun and the music came to life.
Is it just me or did that first song sound like the cantina song from Star Wars
good af
Jazz works for me only when live, but still enjoyed this album a bit 6.5/10 Will I add this album to my library? Maybe
I enjoyed this but perhaps wasn’t fully engaged so it became background music. Having incidentally listened to Bitches Brew the other day (not as part of challenge), I had a frame of reference and I can hear the difference as I was far more engaged with that and could tell it was an album of exceptional quality. So I’ll come back to this another time to reevaluate, it might just be I wasn’t in the right moment to fully appreciate it.
Still sounds great.
Bn
First Listen; 3.5; I'm far from a jazz expert, but to me this album straddles the line between upbeat big band and more mellow, laid back jazz. Incredible musicianship which leaves a lot to unpack. I enjoyed this album, but feel like this is really something where you need to come back for multiple listens and have a little more context in order to fully appreciate it. Favorite Track: Moon Dreams
A classic, landmark album. Fun enough to listen to but lacking some of the more adventurous sounds of the bebop era. The instruments sound really good. It’s well-recorded. Just a little predictable at this point.
chill
Capaz lo escuche en un mal momento.
It was good.
I enjoyed it, faster than the other Miles Davis work i listened to. Although one bad thing i can say about this is that it just doesn’t feel “different” in any way other than it just being good quality. Maybe i just haven’t listened to enough jazz.
I appreciate this making me listen to more Miles Davis as I love So What! I LOVED the first track, added to the playlist! But theeen I didn’t really realise I was listening until a couple of songs later when Budo played, which is kind of the vibe of the whole album so good but not great!
Amazing opening track. Appreciate the structure of the album, yet the songs do seem to meld into one another, with not as many hooks or memorable moments as he has come to be known for through Bitches brew and kind of blue. Good effort by an outstanding artists, but still, only good!
Album machine this guy, I was curious when this came up to see where it stood in his albums and Christ on a bike, how many. Influential figure no doubt. Hard listen all the same I struggle to sit and listen to music like this, it’s more for a live or atmospheric moments. But who can deny the talent on show here
Me costó un poco. Medio lento. Música ambiental
Ziemlich busy, aber so war das nunmal
If you want to dive deeper into jazz, this album is a great starting point. A classic sound without feeling like it's stuck in the past. The musicianship is top-notch and each instrument gets its moment to shine. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Move - Jeru - Moon Dreams
Super!
Reminds me of musicals. It's a bit loud and over the place, but it's a vibe :)
Enjoyable and easy going. Doesn't quite hit 'proper' cool. High 3
Enjoyed it, smooth
The aptly named Birth of the Cool gives us some of the earliest Miles Davis recordings from 1949 and 1950, a decade before his most celebrated Kind of Blue and two decades before his revolutionary Bitches Brew. While it is true that this compilation does not stir in me the kinds of emotions that those two aforementioned records do, the fact that 75 years later it stirs anything at all is astonishing. When the average person thinks of "jazz" they probably most readily think of the exact sound captured on Birth of Cool. When I hear jazz played live in Blues Bars in London it is this sound which they are trying to recapture, and surely no one does it better than Miles Davis.
Nice to get acquainted with such an old impactful album. However, it's not very much my taste.
Gave Birth of the Cool a listen—not my usual style, but I can appreciate the talent and clever arrangements. Venus de Milo and Moon Dreams stood out, smooth and mellow; overall, 3/5.
Never been a fan of the genre but appreciate the talent
My favourite Miles is after 1967 but this was a good listen. Wild to see that this is a compilation of recordings from 1949-1950. It has a nice soft sound with all the horns. At its root is a fairly straight jazz sound which is pretty boring to me but I dig the arrangements here which keep it interesting. I think I can see why this would be considered essential although I’m still disappointed at the omission of all 9 albums from 1971-1976, which are far superior albums to me.
Nice gentle listening.
cool album, not my personal favorite of what i've heard of Miles Davis
It's cool alright
I’m kinda glad this site makes me listen to jazz so often, cause i probably wouldn’t sit to do it on my own. Solid 3 but it was enjoyable.
listening to this album on a windy night definitely helped with this listening experience. never really got into jazz that much, but this album is genuinely such a fun listen for some ambience noise. reminds me of the bar scene towards the end of the movie green book or entering the lobby of a fancy hotel.
Great album name. The whole album is instrumental until the last song and then they hit you with some vocals.
I feel like I force myself to think jazz is the best genre because of how great it's talked about but it's just good to me, nothing insane to listen to.
This is a very different Miles Davis to the one who made “Bitches Brew”. There’s twenty years between “Birth of the Cool” and “Bitches Brew”, but they might as well be an entire universe apart. The latter sounded more like something Can, or even Radiohead, might come out with. The former is more grounded and restrained, and far less outwardly experimental. Although, in true Miles Davis form, he was already innovating. This whole collection of songs is a reaction to the speedy bebop jazz of the late 40s. The music here is calmer, restrained, airy and… cool. Rather than showing off virtuoso skills in individual solos, battling against each other, the instruments are harmonising together in interesting ways, coming together to make something interesting. It feels like a focus more on space and texture than showing off technique. Everything feels restrained. If there’s improvisation happening here, you can’t tell. It all feels very intentional and designed. I’m much more of a fan of that later period Davis, where he was experimenting with hypnotic grooves in improv. Not to say that this wasn’t enjoyable. I particularly liked the calmer songs that focused on those interesting harmonic textures, like “Moon Dreams” in particular. The album could have done without “Darn That Dream” at the end though. I’m not sure why, but the vocal performance really ruined it for me. It really is hard to believe that this is the same Miles Davis that created “Bitches Brew”. Two different universes of the same artist. 3.5 stars
This shit is so fucking sad and depressing yet cool at the same time. Not for me but I see why people adore this and call it a masterpiece. Feels like smoking a cigar in the rain in a trench coat
Not as exciting and engaging as his other work. A good album, but nothing really stood out or grabbed me.
Great background noise, nice and peaceful. However, not something I would choose if it was set in front of me.
Not Miles' best, but cool nonetheless
Alright but Jazz isn't really my thing
This is straight instramental Jazz. To be honest I didn't think I'd like it much but I just let it play and found myself half way through the album before I even noticed. I was in the zone and just letting the music slide through me. I don't think I'd come back to this album, but I think it would be a good study/mindfulness album where you can get some work done in the background. I never considered I'd like jazz, but I think I enjoy this one. Seems like a 4 for to me!
5/10
Just never really got into this, no tunes to catch onto. I really like some of his other music but this didn't grab me at all. Tossing up between two and three stars.
mannnn I know these recordings are important in their own way, but I can't help but wish this compilation was swapped out with some other Miles album that isn't on this list ("'Round About Midnight" if we're sticking within the decade, "Sketches of Spain" if we're looking for some boundary-breaking). I'm curious how this was perceived at time of release (1957, same year as 'Round About Midnight) considering these recordings were captured between 1949-1950, and Miles had already starting moving on from this sound. maybe audiences were still hungry for it, but Miles was years past this already, and those intervening years were very productive and quickly evolving, and he continued in that fashion for decades. you can especially tell that these songs were of a certain era due not only to their sound, approach, and recording quality but also to their length -- each of these recordings would have fit onto their own physical media and purchased separately before they were compiled onto a 12-inch format. love Miles and of course appreciate him for his early contributions and breaking barriers with those early forms of jazz; however, I prefer what happened later.
It's cool
it's an instrumental mood to that time when the music create an atmosphere that make you feel suspense. The album also creates a sexy and romantic ambient.
I appreciate him immensely as a musician but I dont know style enough to see if this album was impressive
Own this one and listened again. It's not my favorite Miles period but it is cool and nice to listen to.
Very Groovy Jazz album. Honestly might be the oldest album I have ever listened to.
Classic Miles Davis as he transitions between big band and Kind of Blue and certainly a far cry from Bitches Brew just over a decade later. Moon dreams is my favorite.
Teeuw-s: I love mijn kipje
There's not much, if anything, wrong with this release, but I do like it considerably less than the rest of the Miles Davis catalogue I've heard, simply because it is just too short and slight. Personally, I'd go with another one of his numerous great albums over a compilation, but this is fine as well. Favourite track: Move
First time listen Good Miles Davis album. Not his best work, definitely a little more low-key than some of his most famous stuff. I still found it to be nice background music. Feels like walking through a bustling city taking in the scenery. Didn't really have a favorite or least favorite portion for this album, it all blended together well and made for a pleasant experience 3.5/5
I’m not a jazz fan, so couldn’t get into this, but I suppose it’s good for what it is. My untrained ear doesn’t know though, because it all just runs together to me. (3)
Exceptionally forgettable background music. I would challenge myself to focus on one instrument at a time, and 30 minutes later I realised I hadn't listened to any of them. This happened several times.
Zone out a fair bit. Same jazz music throughout the album except for the last song. Darn that dream has lyrics. Lots of darn in that song.
Was good through and through I would say. Couldn't tell you which song was which, but I enjoyed listening to it while at work. Caught myself bopping my head a few times. I do know the first half of Move was good though, the first song on the album lol
When I hear this album I can only wonder what happened to the other Jazz greats of the era, Roy Donk, Paul Buffano, Marcus "The Worm" Hick, and Mookie Kramer & the Eight Balls.
Pretty cool sound, I liked it better than I expected!
To be honest, I’m not much of a jazz fan. Most of the time I feel like I don’t fully get it. Still, this record was a pleasure to hear. For me it wasn’t something incredibly unique or mind-blowing, but it created a clear picture in my mind: a big city during rush hour, people moving quickly, cars passing, everyone going somewhere. The music kind of flows like that movement. Overall it’s a good album and I enjoyed the experience.
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Boplicity Third Miles Davis album. I've got no inherent problems with this album or the genre in general, but this seemed to be lack in variety unlike the last two (Bitches Brew and Kind Of Blue). I'm not sure this is something I need to hear before I die.
Äthat s the old 😎 cool
shoutout lisa simpson B4 isn't a legitimate song music to aggresively snap your fingers to enjoyable, albeit too repetitive for my taste 3.5/5
Love the tempo and the harmonies followed by back-and-forth solos for each instrument. Cool 3.5
3.0
Miles Davis is one of my favorites, but when it's 70s fusion Miles lol. Should have been Bitches Brew.
I liked this but if it were any longer I wouldn’t.
alright
Don’t listen to Jazz daily but this was great to listen to while wrapping up the work week
Not as interesting as some of his later stuff but some good bops
Smooth bombast brilliance ★★★½
Very pleasant. It was good Easter egg making music
nice and chilled, good lounging music
Good vibes to work to and some real classics in there, last song is for sure a skipper which is a shame.
Nice, but not memorable to me. I just don't think I have enough knowledge about jazz and instrumental music only to truly enjoy it really. I may try to listen to it again.
a fun listen but i enjoyed reading abt the album more than playing it. it was interesting to read abt how ppl found it 'strange' at the time / didnt think it sounded like jazz / spotted the influences of impressionists like ravel, bc nowadays that slower 'cool' jazz is so ubiquitous it deffo doesnt come across as strange and unique. but it does come across pleasant
very smooth sounding but felt quite repetitive
I feel birth reborn and cool. Liked the short songs, kept things interesting. Weakest track was the last one, didn't enjoy the vocals. I'm fine with just musicians showing off.
Decent 3,5
Miles Davis has a smooth sound. I enjoy it. It doesn't light me up enough to buy the album, but its smooth.
It was good. Nothing that really grabbed me, like on Kind of Blue. But I'll listen more to see if it grows on me
I feel sacrilegious giving this a 3, but I just didn't really wow me. Sorry Miles Davis
I listen to jazz only a few times a year. I love it live, I love it around the holidays. This was a great jazz album, but I miss the lyrics of vocal jazz when they aren’t there.
Better than the other miles Davis, but still not a jazz fan
I liked the album, but compared with other jazz albums I have heard i didn't liked it that much. It has that feeling from the 50s and sending you back to those times.
Perfectly pleasant - I like as background music, but not a jazz enthusiast
I’m sure it’s good, better than a 3, but I can’t get into jazz too much.
I'm gonna be a little mean; cool jazz is one of those genres meant to be background noise. It's just a little too safe, a little too consistent to really grab my attention the way other jazz music can. It's good music, no complaints about listening to it, but it just doesn't excite as much as it could.
I haven’t listened to lots of Miles before other than the early bebop stuff. I guess miles was sick of bebop and was slowing things down compared to the bebop standard of playing 1000 mph over super fast chord changes and he wanted to make it less of a jam and more like a composition. Really interesting and a good listen. Shows how much he was experimenting and changing the sound in jazz even before he dropped Kind of Blue later on which was a real shift. Hard not to give it a 10/10 on the historical importance basis but assuming we’re going off of personal enjoyment I’ll say like a 7/10. Enjoyable but I think I just enjoy the whackier side of miles’ discography more than earlier more traditional jazz stuff. Did I need to hear this before I die? Yeah
i believe this qualifies as "the good shit". far from my favorite Miles Davis recording, but these sessions put him on the map! really groundbreaking for 1949-50 and aged pretty well to boot. deserves to be one of the 1001? totally!
Good.
Moon dreams was great!!!
Fine jazz album. Not a big standout for me
Cool
This is a really solid jazz album. I enjoyed listening to it while I worked.
not all that fussed about jazz but this was decent to have on in the background. reminded me of some of the big band stuff that my parents love and would play a lot when i was a child.
Unexpected, but pleasant
Bra Jazz album mycket trumpet, saknar vocals Favoritlåt: Israel
Real fun album with a lot of differents moods. Second Miles Davis album I listen to and he can make me feel really different things with his instrument.
Pretty good overall. Was confused on why on song was randomly called Israel but it was released in 1956 which is pretty far away from when I was born soo.... Anyway nice instrumental, cool smooth sound
Super good tbh
Overall: 6/10 I think this is fine. This is the type of jazz I imagine when people say the word jazz. Most people would use it as background noise for a fancy party or something. I might use it to play video games like Fallout or Bioshock. Fav Song: Budo
Not quite kind of blue but at the time I’m sure it was groundbreaking, the recording hiss of the technology places it in its era.
#0003: #0002: BIRTH OF THE COOL by MILES DAVIS Good quality dinner party jazz, bit of fun! #0001: ELEPHANT by THE WHITE STRIPES They are from Detroit SNA heavy and distorted bassline played on guitar w/ octave pedal not bass Produced @ Toerag Studios E. London for £5k on analogue equipment built before 1963; recorded and mastered w/out computer Meg White "tick tock drumming style" Overall: Quite enjoyed it; like the squalliness and the feel the old tech and playing styles give the music but after the first 5 tracks or so I really fell off the album and it lost my attention. Fine as background but I wasn't blown away towards the end. Maybe other WS will do it for me? Or maybe on relistening?
petit jazz tranquille
🎺
Cool en fond as usual
Miles Davis is a genius. Although Jazz is not one of my favorite genres, I appreciated listening to it
I’m not qualified to adequately review what I just heard. Likeable pleasing album but it’s probably way better than I am skilled to say. Rating purely on preference for this one.
Fine modal jazz album, but to me not as as cohesively grooving as KIND OF BLUE, probably because it is a compilation (I thought there was a rule that prevented the inclusion of compilations on this list?), rather than an album constructed out of artistic intentionality, but it's cool jazz approach is more approachable than BITCHES BREW. I respect the skill of modal jazz, but I admit that I derive more enjoyment from the big band and vocal jazz arrangements than the cool jazz/bebop modal jazz approach. I think my favorite Miles Davis album is actually COOKIN', but I doubt that will ever be on the list. Want to give it a 3 for my personal preferences, but I know too many jazz cats that cite this album as seminal record for their love of jazz, so I have to bump it to a 4.
Awsome, full of wonders and smooth, but a little repetitive at times.
I don't know how to feel about instrumental jazz and how to approach it. I appreciate the craftsmanship at least, and the significance is definitely notable enough for inclusion.
Highlights: Jeru, Venus De Milo, Budo, Godchild, Rouge Lowlights: --------------------------------------------- Objectively this is great music, but I can't see myself listening to it on a whim. By no means did I dislike it, but I have no desire to go back to it.
Listenable.
This is another case of "I need to be there to enjoy it." Please don't get me wrong, this is absolutely mind blowing talent and I respect the talent and hard work of these musicians. I just really can't make myself enjoy a recorded jazz performance. It just falls so flat for me. If I was in the audience I would be absolutely starstruck and awestruck. But unfortunately, I was not in the audience. Maybe I'll find a jazz recording someday that I really can get into and prove my feelings wrong about jazz albums. But for now, 3/5. I need to be there.
2.7 The most cool thing about this is the fact it was recorded in the 40s. I was quite looking forward to this given I quite enjoyed his later outings that have appeared on this list. Also the background that it helped propel "cool" jazz. In hindsight I think a better name for it might have been "safe" jazz. There was nothing really in any song that gripped me, that excited me, or that even thought it was remotely cool. Must have been a time and place thing.
it's definily not my type of music. So I don't really like it.
Very easy listen. I enjoyed it but nothing that will take me back to the album.
I am a Miles Davis superfan, but historically this is not my favorite of his periods. Fun to revisit! Remains the same as always. This is good, but not for me really.
I'm reasonable confident in saying "I like jazz" and I especially like MD when at his most avant-garde and experimental. However, this may just be a bit too early for my limited knowledge and appreciation to grasp it's importance. It sounds and feels really old, it is in fact music from a different generation. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Old ★★★☆ (6/10) Total reviewed : 212 Already owned : 47 Purchased : 10 To buy list : 4 Nope : 151
Good
Very monsters inc-esque
Peak jazz but I prefer tracks with singing alongside.
I get it now.
Very solid, I don't know if I'd seek it out, but I do enjoy it immensely.
If Kind of Blue is a 5 this is a 3
Cool jazz. Yet to hear jazz that is higher than 3 stars for me. Maybe someday.
I still feel roughly the same about jazz as I did before hearing this.
honestly not that into anything without vocals but had this on in the background while working and it was nice :)
I think I like this kinda stuff when you see it love but find it hard to listen to as a whole album when sat at home
Very cool indeed. Not as out there as Bitches Brew + some of the stuff I'm more into, but undoubtedly masterful playing.
3.0
Significantly better than Bitches Brew and exactly what I want from jazz
he keeps it moving :)
3.5?
I prefer On the Corner
miles was the best jazzman from the 40s all the way up to the 70s
Jazz.
Do ya like jazz? 🐝
Very cool. A bit too smooth and not as hard hitting as expected. Enjoyable background music, but not attention grabbing.
7.77
I still don't get it, but I can tell it's less complex than Kind of Blue, which means there's a bit less for me not to get. Which if you think about it, means I almost sort of get it a bit more?
Very mild, a little boring. Would be better live.
This is exactly why I love this service. I’m not a jazz aficionado, so I figured I could put Birth of the Cool on while driving and get the gist—but I’m so glad I gave it a second, more focused listen. My usual impression of jazz is that it can feel too freeform: a conversation among instruments that drifts without a clear pattern, and you’re never quite sure when it’s going to land. This album still has that interplay, but the music is shaped by strong arrangements and steady rhythmic frameworks, which gave me something to hold onto (shorter tracks helped, too) and made the solos easier to appreciate. I had a college buddy who was really into Miles Davis, and I’m finally starting to understand why.
two miles davis albums in a row
If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis
Easy digestible jazz
I am not a jazz fan and still not after listening to this. Great craftsmanship though.
Nice enough but not really a jazz fan so didn’t do too much for me
It was alright. Only one song really stuck out to me, I would definitely listen to this again but it took me a few tries for it to grab me. Highlights: Venus De Milo
Great album but boring. Everything sounded the same, only moon dream caught my attention. But good artistry nevertheless
Jazz init
Nice mysig liten jazz stund!
Different from what I usually listen to but I enjoyed it very much and found it was compatible while I was reading.
This is a good early Miles record. Not as good as some of his other work, but still really solid. 7/10

No. 58 Not a big jazz guy, but this was a good listen.
If I was a jazz fan, I would probably give this five stars but it's just not my thing. I do like the older jazz like Louis Armstrong but I was never a fan of Bebop. The musicianship is impeccable so I have to give it three stars for that.
I loved listening to this but, haven’t got the ear for jazz yet!
Only 'Darn that dream' had vocals, which is a shame. The rest is mostly background music.
I’m not the biggest jazz-head but listenable
This was fun. Grant had informed me as to how old this record is which is incredible
