Joan Armatrading

Dull.

Down to Zero. Never heard this album before. Nice drum sound. Really pop with a warmth. Beautiful steel as well. Great rhythm and timing in her singing. Help yourself. This turned funcky a minute or so in! Water with the wine. Enjoyed this in a musical, tell a story type of way. Love and affection. Save me. Im not clicking with this album. Not terrible but not one ill come back to again and again. Maybe a couple of tracks. Join the boys. This is one i might come back to. Would be a great live song i reckon. People. Nice organ solo in this followed by a guitar solo with a great sound. Somebody who loves you. OK. Like fire. Nice groove to the guitar. Nice laid back feel buy not aure it goes anywhere for me. Tall in the saddle. Dont mind this. Not a fan of the guitar solo in- a bit lackimg texture/all yhe aame volume. Something about her voice. She is a good singer, has good range, some interesting tremello other probably quite difficult and technical bits but at times her voice sounds a bit all in the mouth. I dont know her ao well. Maybe she was ne er known as a singer but more of a composer or arranger? There’s some good variety in terms of what she does with her voice and its not over the top lile a guy sebastian type ‘hey i can sing’ so it maoes sense from that POV.

Niet heel interessant

Would have been easy enough even without the wikipedia piece above to pick out "Love and Affection" and "Tall in the Saddle" as the "best" songs on the album, as they definitely stood out against the rest. This just wasn't for me though.

Jazzy folk-pop album from the mid-70s. Musically inoffensive and even inmemorable, lyrically more provoking, but the songs blend together too much. She is talented but this album isn't really my thing.

The lady has a great voice, thought provoking lyrics & clearly talented but her album leaves me cold. I didn't dislike the album at all but unless I focused, I would just forget it was even playing. Not one track stood out for me in a good or bad way. I'll give it two stars because of the very obvious talent (you gotta be deaf not to hear it) that Joan Armatrading has but I would never play her album again that said... if it (a song from her album) was playing on the jukebox at the pub no doubt, I would like it well enough but would none the less ask my date for money to load the juke box with an hour's worth of music that actually excites me.

She is not bad at all. The lyrics are good, the music more diverse than your average guitar-wielding singer-songwriter, but it is still singer-songwriter so far too boring/slow for me.

Boring

Off the cuff remark: I thought I would be more familair with this than I am but having listened through I am not overly surprised. I liked it less than I wanted to. Singer-songwriter that just doesn't capture my attention. Standout track: Love and Affection, but even this I felt I knew less than I thought I did and it was okay rather than special. Revisit?: wouldn't think so.

This was a nice playlist, I liked the song "Help yourself"! Though none of the songs would be something I would listen to regularly so none of them will be added to my new playlist.

Based on the reviews, I expected to like this. Didn't really enjoy it, though it's fine.

Just didn't do anything for me. I'd listen to it a second time to see if it hits different on repeat, but I don't want to.

This was a perfectly okay 70s album from another artist I don't think I've heard of before. None of the songs were familiar but it was very 70s studio. "Armstrading" sounds a lot like Christine McVie also, and I guess Tracy Chapman is the American version of "Armstrading."

I'd only recently heard of Joan Armatrading through her song I'm Lucky, which I liked a lot, so I'm a little disappointed by this album which is absolutely fine but nothing for me to write home about. Out of interest I listened to Walk Under Ladders (featuring I'm Lucky) and I did prefer it to this, so I might explore more Joan Armatrading in future.

It's ok, but I've had my fill of folk and singer singer writer stuff over the past 2 weeks, so I might be a little biased.

The collection of songs seemed non-cohesive. Her unique style of singing was recognizable throughout, but some songs sounded like they were recorded by completely different bands, or written by different songwriters with different grooves in mind. Enjoyed a couple of songs, but the album as a whole had me all over the place.

the first song is not that good i dont really like how quiet it is at the start and i also dont like how little instruments are at the start i also dont like how she sings. the next song is also bad there is not much of a difference between the songs i dont have much more to say. the last song is okay i dont like any of these songs though there is not much to say about this song still. overall i dont like this album i would not recommend it.

Sounds like an album that influenced a huge amount of artist. Not really my thing, but still solid songwriting.

Neal’s album today was ZZ Top’s Eliminator. This was a welcome breath of fresh air after that. It’s not really my jam, but she’s got a nice voice and some decent songs. Water in the Wine gave some date-rape vibes I wasn’t so into though.

Armatrading's label as the "Black-British-Joni Mitchell" is not unwarranted. Her vocal delivery is very similar, but lyrically is not nearly as interesting. The musicianship is high-caliber. Beyond the hit, "Love and Affection", this album failed to keep my attention on any one song for very long.

Liked the first track, that's about it.

I'm not sure what this is supposed to be, honestly. It's not bad, per se, but there's nothing about this that is good. There's some really odd vocal musical choices. There were a couple of songs that got me to nod along, while mindlessly listening. But any time I pay attention to this album, I just kind of wish I didn't. Again, not because it's bad. It's not bad, but it's uninteresting, and not committed to be anything in particular. Favorite Song(s): Somebody Who Loves You

Join the boys was funky and enjoyed. Bass is solid. Love and affection has some nice sax but otherwise just sounded like another ballad. Overall album was just fine. Wouldn’t be upset if someone put it on but don’t think I’d go out of my way to listen again. If I could give half stars I’d give a 2.5.

The Good: A self-titled album is always nice! The Bad: you got to be into folky singer-songwriter music… The Ugly: I don’t belong to the group that is into this kind of music… Yes, she is important for music… but that doesn’t mean that she is important enough for me to care. What in the Joni Mitchell was this

I have heard of Joan - but did not know much about her. For some reason I had also assumed she was American. I had also heard the song Love and Affection, which I love, but I did not know she sang it. Overall, this is a pleasant album and very much of its time.

If this isn’t on the soundtracks of any and all movies about a woman in her 50s finding herself faced with divorce and discovering a new side of herself I’ll eat my hat. Teasing aside, this was actually pretty enjoyable. If you like strong women with guitars this may be for you. (ntm.)

I really tried with this one, but it just didn’t land. The whole album feels flat and lifeless, and nothing about it made me want to keep listening. Her voice is fine, but the songs are bland and forgettable, almost as if they’re afraid to take any risks. Nothing here stands out or leaves much of an impression. I kept waiting for a spark or even a catchy hook, but I just found myself zoning out. Maybe there’s something here for fans of soft, safe singer-songwriter stuff, but for me it was boring and completely uninspired.

Funkier than expected.

Another album that I question why is this on the list? It is pretty mediocre throughout. Perhaps Joan Armatrading was a pioneer or paved the way for like artists... But still, the music isn't bad, it's just ok. It hits straight down the middle. I really have a hard time not Thu king the author of this list doesn't really have a clue of what a list like this should entail.

Man, nobody makes records like this anymore... and there's a reason for that. This album is a patchwork of styles that doesn't feel cohesive at all. I guess the idea was to cast a wide net to bring disparate listeners in, but it falls flat for me.

There was the briefest time in my life when I gave Joan’s music a try. Probably thought it’d make me a more sensitive. Couldn’t justify a good reason to stick with her. I just don’t like it.

Oh, this is not for me. Love and Affection is a good song, but the rest of this record just makes no impression on me. It pains me to rate this album so low, because black and female artists are woefully under-represented on this list, let alone black female artists, but I not in a mood to give this a pass.

Great song writing, great musicianship. Couldn't wait for it to be over. Literally counting the songs that I was subjecting myself to. I would have torn my hair out if I had heard any more. A lot of songs where she sang about giving all her power away to men. That was weird. One song where she sings about calmly accepting date rape. "I got no strength to make him stop" "I guess it's too late, but I'll know next time"

A mix of mostly inoffensive background music, although don't get me started on track 3, Love and Affection. Would I go out of my way to listen to Joan Armatrading again, no, no i wouldn't. 1.5 stars

This one was really interesting, I had never listened to any of her music before! On the one hand I didn't really get into it, but on the other it really reminded me of some other artists I really love who were around in the 90s (I assume were probably inspired by Aramtrading?) I think with time I could get into this album, but as a first listen it has piqued my interest but it hasn't grabbed me. Fave track: Down to zero

I have never heard of or listened to Joan Armatrading in my life so I have no clue what to expect here. Very Elton John coded but a woman! This is such a drink wine and listen album. Sweet and funky and hazy vibes. Some beautiful sax playing on this album also. Half-way through and it's starting to get a weeee bit boring now eh. An easy listen but nothing really stood out to me, probably would not listen again.

I really didn't like this one very much. It just kinda sounds amateurish, frankly. The mastering often felt very jarring, the tones on the guitar were never very good, a lot of the songs sounded very similar to me, especially with her vocals. Yeah, all in all, I wouldn't listen to this again.

Saw the album cover and was half looking forward to some Tracy Chapman, until I noticed the year, then the name of the album. Although this wasn't quite bad enough for a single star rating, it was incredibly dull from start to finish. Middle of the road, boring, the first few tracks were slightly more interesting, but it rapidly became a snooze-fest of safe nothingness. I remember Love and Affection being a hit in the 1970s; hated it then, if anything it's even worse now. I feel 2 stars is being generous.

It's easy to hear that this one comes from the heart. Joan is obviously passionate about the music she makes and th emessage she wishes to deliver. That being said, it still sounds like generic 70's folk rock that is heavily polished. Not for me.

Joan Armatrading is obviously a great artist, passionate and soulful, but also very generic. It's sadly an average album from the 70s and I can't see why it's supposed to be a monument of this era.

To me, this album was fine. Nothing egregious, but also nothing really memorable about it either. I don't think it belongs on this list as something truly groundbreaking because I think other albums that were made around or before this time had more influence on the folk rock sound.

I wouldn’t call myself a fan after listening to this album. However, I did pull a couple of songs away that I like, Down to The Ground being my favorite. A lot of the songs I just didn’t find catchy enough to make me want to listen to them again. There isn’t really anything wrong with this record, or any things that I would change, rather it just isn’t my preference.

I liked the more rock oriented songs. Join the Boys, People, etc. This is nice but doesn't really stick in my mind very much.

This one just never grabbed me, though I feel like I'm missing a boat here. I'll try it again, but this slipped right past me.

2, hmm I’m not sure, it’s not bad but also not that good

Pros: - First time hearing this album (i think) and possibly artist too. Overall the sound is really nice and cohesive; by the time her voice comes in on the first track it was pretty much exactly what I was expecting and my ears wanted to hear to match the instrumentation. - The instrumentation and recording are all really well done. I love that first piano run up in the first song only seconds after the acoustic guitars set the tone. The second track also has some nice behind-the-scenes piano/keyboard lines. - Love the tempo / meter change in the second song about halfway in. Songs that change tempo/feel in pop music are kind of rare these days so it's nice to hear one here that is drastic but still within the overall vibe of the song - really nice flow to the album, the placement of the tracks are really great. that's usually a gripe of mine with any style of music but specifically with singer songwriter-y styles it can be pretty bad at times. Cons: - not a lot of memorability for me Misc: - While it's a nice album, it doesn't have a lot of standouts for me, and in context of 1001 albums you need to hear, I think it's probably in the lower 40% so I'm giving it a 2/5.

her voice is very whiny to me… i’m sorry i tried to like it but it was like squeaky at times and it just made me mad. also this has never been my type of music so nothing really redeemed iteself

there is nothing in this album for me. couldn't even make myself sit through it.

She's been pretty much a household name in the UK for as long as a I can remember and yet almost everyone would struggle to name/hum one of her songs. Back in the 80s it always sounded like the sort of music old people listened to but even as a legit old person, I still don't feel adult enough to get Joan Armatrading.

This feels like almost any other album a female has realised. This doesn't seem like it's set itself apart. Quite easy to tune out and forget about.

So far this is fine. It's not really my style. I guess the songwriting is decent, and the singing is good, but it doesn't do anything for me in particular. After a few tracks, I feel like I wouldn't listen to this again. After a few more tracks, I like the ones that are kind of more funky but for the most part this is like generic '70s pop. It's not *bad* but it really doesn't grab me.

Wow I've never see or heard of this woman ever. Let's go. So far she kind of reminds me of a female Van Morrison. I don't love her voice but I like the production value. Not really my thing. I feel like this should be played in This Is Us. 70s Rebecca and Jack would have been into her. Yeah this gets cheesier as it goes on. Reminds me of Harvey Bristol Blues Collection. Man I kinda cant wait for this album to be over. How did this make it on the list?!

Good, folksy/pop vibes from this album, made entirely by a woman of color in London. It was eye-opening that I had never heard of Joan before since this album was so well done. Again, it's not music I would tune into, but I appreciated listening to her works.

Tolle Stimme, so tief. Angenehme Musik, aber es will einfach nicht hängen bleiben. Es fehlen markante Melodien. Als Muttersprachler nimmt man die Musik wahrscheinlich anders wahr.

Hab zwar mehrmals reingehört, ist aber nicht wirklich was hängen geblieben.

It took me a while, but I kind of like Joan Armitrading. She is one of those rare artists that critics and record companies pull out all the stops for, plugging relentlessly, practically willing them into stardom. In fact, Joan Armitrading stands alone in this in terms of industry promotion. As I recall, the hype was that, as a songwriter, she was the 2nd coming of Lennon/McCartney. All the PR never really stuck--Joan Armitrading was never more than a minor figure in popular music. But what about the album in question? It actually isn't her first, but rather her third album, and has more or less the same mix of winners and duds. Armitrading's style was unusual, as it was a polyglot mix of a number of styles, wrapped up in an accessible package; folk, blues, R&B, country, and rock were the musical influences, and her lyrics had some of the confessional quality of the still recent singer songwriter era, but tended to be more direct and blunt. And then there was her voice, a plain but sonorous baritone. Her vocal phrasing was unusual, in that she would alternate between rapid fire rhythmic pulses and elongated phrases. Down to Zero has strong rhythmic hooks to start with, which Armitrading makes even more memorable by the way she stretches and contracts the melodies. Love and Affection boasts an earworm in the chorus that made it a hit, with the help of ceaseless industry promotion. Unfortunately, the rest of the songwriting is rather clumsy, which is the pattern for pretty much all of her albums. I generally prefer to listen to albums, but Joan Armitrading is one of those artists who are best enjoyed in a compilation. 2/5

Didn't really pay attention

Periaatteessa ihan ok nainen ja kitara -settiä, mutta ei sitten kuitenkaan lähtenyt. Water with winessä oli vähän samaa poljentoa, kuin son of a preachermanissa, mutta nostatus ei päässyt kliimaksiin, vaan jäi vähän vajaaksi.

Just a boring album and the singing is way overrated. 4/10.
