Tolle Stimme, so tief. Angenehme Musik, aber es will einfach nicht hängen bleiben. Es fehlen markante Melodien. Als Muttersprachler nimmt man die Musik wahrscheinlich anders wahr.
Hab zwar mehrmals reingehört, ist aber nicht wirklich was hängen geblieben.

It took me a while, but I kind of like Joan Armitrading. She is one of those rare artists that critics and record companies pull out all the stops for, plugging relentlessly, practically willing them into stardom. In fact, Joan Armitrading stands alone in this in terms of industry promotion. As I recall, the hype was that, as a songwriter, she was the 2nd coming of Lennon/McCartney. All the PR never really stuck--Joan Armitrading was never more than a minor figure in popular music. But what about the album in question? It actually isn't her first, but rather her third album, and has more or less the same mix of winners and duds. Armitrading's style was unusual, as it was a polyglot mix of a number of styles, wrapped up in an accessible package; folk, blues, R&B, country, and rock were the musical influences, and her lyrics had some of the confessional quality of the still recent singer songwriter era, but tended to be more direct and blunt. And then there was her voice, a plain but sonorous baritone. Her vocal phrasing was unusual, in that she would alternate between rapid fire rhythmic pulses and elongated phrases. Down to Zero has strong rhythmic hooks to start with, which Armitrading makes even more memorable by the way she stretches and contracts the melodies. Love and Affection boasts an earworm in the chorus that made it a hit, with the help of ceaseless industry promotion. Unfortunately, the rest of the songwriting is rather clumsy, which is the pattern for pretty much all of her albums. I generally prefer to listen to albums, but Joan Armitrading is one of those artists who are best enjoyed in a compilation. 2/5
Didn't really pay attention
Periaatteessa ihan ok nainen ja kitara -settiä, mutta ei sitten kuitenkaan lähtenyt. Water with winessä oli vähän samaa poljentoa, kuin son of a preachermanissa, mutta nostatus ei päässyt kliimaksiin, vaan jäi vähän vajaaksi.
Just a boring album and the singing is way overrated. 4/10.

It's well engineered; the recordings are lush and extremely clean. There's a lot of technical ability. But the music is, generally, limp. Like much of the Earnest-Rock of the 60s, I'm not convinced that songwriting was very important to the project. Rather, it sounds like the lyrics were slaved over and then haphazardly sing-said in a meandering unfocused melodic rambling over tracks built up from a group of (crack) studio musicians noodling on a few simple chords. There's something really smug and self-serious about it all, and none of it is musically memorable. Like Fire jumps out - proving that she could write a song. It's just too little too late.
Slow, boring, and not my style. Not something I would ever listen to. Would turn off if it came on the radio, although I think it has an audience, just not me. 1/5
Reviewed this before and can't say this album really does it for me. The one song "Love and Affection" is nice but this is largely forgettable for me.
Got bored about the 4th song in. Like a 70s Tori Amos.
Just didn’t do it for me sadly, definitely is a lazy comparison to make but felt like a less accessible & slightly jarring at times Tracy Chapman record. Maybe needs a relisten

Joan Armatrading is a completely forgettable album but not a completely unbearable one like some others on the list. This self titled record is nothing special in my opinion and I am not sure why I am listening to it. Maybe for being an early bluesy woman or something? If I it ever shows up in my collection, I'ma-trading it for something else...1.15 stars.
I do not like the album because the singer's voice is lowkey making me angry for some reason. The album cover is kind of cool tho.

the first song is uhm bad I don't like it uh the voice is kinda calming but like uh its something the lyrics are ok n yeah the music is ok its not that bad but not that good ig idk I don't really like it idk why.

Listening to this album is like sitting next to someone on a bus who insists on telling you their life story in monotone. Joan’s idea of “emotional” is like watching a piece of cardboard pretend it has feelings. Every song is an endless parade of half-hearted attempts to sound soulful, with all the charisma of a tax audit. By the second track, you’ll find yourself questioning your life choices. She might have tried, but she missed “heartfelt” and hit “insufferable” instead.
Pretty dull and boring. Just never got into it at all the songs were slow and the lyrics didn’t really jump at me. There’s talent there but she’s no Tracy Chapman.

I’m not crazy about this… seems more like something my hippy mother-in-law would listen to. Fiona Apple sounds a lot like her - not sure if I like that or not.

This genre of music is not for me, but if I were to give my personal feelings about it, it would be as follows: extremely boring, safe, consumerism music that has a decent vocalist behind it, and its unimaginative and repetitive. She can sing, thats about it. So far the only album Ive actually did not manage to listen to fully, because it was so mindnumbing.

Really bland. Pleasant enough to start off with but got really bored by about halfway through. And the Clapton-esque sign off finished me off, too. Would not recommend.

Decent songwriting and musicianship for sure but not my taste at all. It just feels too coffee house contemporary, easy listening. I stuck with most of it but skipped around a little bit. My score is more reflective of how well it fits with what I like rather than the quality of the album. I don't think there's a song I'd come back to or add to a playlist ever.
too depressing…. there are 1001 albums but god when will it finally be my turn
this feels like being stuck in a dentists waiting room. one of those ones where they have a tv on the wall but its inexplicably tuned in to smooth radio. still better than having to watch this morning or loose women.
