Reviews (page 12 of 13)
So cool, good album overall… UK REPRESENT !!!!!
tired. its not bad, but its nothing new
it feels so unserious but they probably thought they were soo serious
Boring. Not much else to say.
knew this wasn't gonna be my type of sound
I’m a casual punk listener, and I tend to value strong lyricism in music. I struggled to connect with that here, maybe I missed the intended meaning. I understand they were discussing some important political messages, but I could hardly understand them, which to me, takes away from getting the message across. At times, I felt the lyrics were unclear as they just mumbled or screamed the entire time, though I did appreciate the overall production quality. I listened to London Calling after this to give them a fair shot, and I definitely enjoyed that way more.
Why is there only one song over 3 minutes? there's mostly 1-2 minute songs which is a genuinely baffling choice to me. I don't remember a single song and he's vocals dragging aren't helping, I can't make out what he's on about. Music isn't bad. Police and Thieves is predictably the best song with interesting mixture of reggae beat and punk guitar and given the time to explore that sound. But I still don't even think it's that good. The last song had a harmonica when they could have used guitar feedback????????????? Feels like a 3 the whole way through but I was glad it was over. Relegated to 2. British punk needs to step it up.
As someone who used to listen to classic rock like this a lot. I've heard a million albums like this. Nothing special. Rough sounding vocals with some good guitar and. Heavy focus on drums
Very consistent sound and energy on every track, except for a much longer one near the end. Otherwise I wasn’t a huge fan of what The Clash is going for here. It’s a bit jumbled and too loud overall to have distinctions between each track. It just isn’t what I like to listen to.
A little more palatable than other punk, but I wouldn’t really listen to this
All a bit samey for me though some fun bits in individual songs.
Meh. I've tried to like punk. I feel like I ought to. I like sticking it to the man as much as the next guy. But idk it just doesn't sound good.
They’re angry. They’re English. Am I missing something?
Their early stuff all sounds the same to me. 35 minutes felt a lot longer.
Nothing special didn’t like it didn’t hate it
Not for me
N é meu tipo mas bom 5,5
such a dude album, good instrumentals and can feel the influence but they just sound like british dudes to me
I'll be the guy to say it... The Clash is overrated.
High energy consistently throughout the album but overall no remarkable moments or songs.
Honestly kind of bored by most of this album except for Police & Thieves. 👍Police & Thieves
Not bad, I don't really mind their stuff actually I just don't know if I would listen to their albums that often. I do like listening to a single song every now and then cause yeah I like their sound I just think it feels a bit samsey in an album. I liked Police and Thieves! Felt samesy for me but some of it was a vibe. Not angry enough for me though. would not listen again, was just average. fav song: Janie Jones
so i do like how these songs are all uptempo and high energy. you can tap your toes to these. good hooks in some of these songs too but man. they do all kind of sound the same after a while. also the guys voice is a little annoying and im pretty sure the same little guitar riff has been reused across several songs. like, use one other instrument. write one song thats a little diferent. do a key change. like give me something please all these songs are 2 minutes why does it draggggg i was going to give this like a 3.5 and then i listened to it again and changed my mind
Major band but a bit to hard for me
meh cool but prob wouldn’t listen to again rlly but i liked a couple songs
I'm So Bored With The U.S.A. Well that's timely. I am bored with us too!!! Should be Fiive stars for that alone! Seriously, punk with a defiant point of view, some content still pertinent because the more shit changes, the more shit stays the same. It is same-same at times, and the vocals grate at times. Listened before? N Saved tracks? N Favorite tracks? I'm So Bored With The U.S.A, ⭐⭐
not for me pero unos solos de guitarra estaban muy cool
nothing special
It seemed like a monocordic album. Sometimes I couldn't even understand when a song ended and a new one started. Apart from a couple of good songs, I didn't enjoy it (although I understand it's importance during the 70's).
jesus christ they are so fucking british
Eh lol. Is this the album Nancy Wheeler admitted she hated 😭
It was alright
This is not for me. Tbh I struggled to get through this album. It's too much of the same for me, and after 3 or 4 songs I was ready for it to be over. I did enjoy Police and Theives, and it was catchy. The tone of the singer is tiring after a while. Too repetitive, too many call and response choruses. 2.5
Pretty good for Brit punk. Some songs listenable. London calling is better.
An enjoyable, but bog standard punk offering from a band I never really connected with. The main issue being nearly every other punk band of the era was more lyrically, musically and politically interesting. Which leaves the clash falling a bit short, especially with this release. Later they developed a more refined (though less punk) sound, which I find suits them much more. This release simply feels a bit hollow in comparison to contemporaries, but hey, at least it's better than never mind the bollocks.
I wish I were more punk also I just noticed that I had an unnecessary comma in a review from a few weeks ago so in honor of this punk album im making this review a complex sentence without ANY commas to make up for my IDIOCY anyways im not punk enough for this kind of music but i fear the people who listen to this too much to give it a 1 star so 2 stars
Beste Lieder: Hate & War
I’m not gonna lie I didn’t even finish the album hehe 😝 but it was overall a pretty solid album just not my vibe. Wouldn’t ever re listen to any songs.
2/5
Ok, not really my jam.
Didn’t give it a thorough listen. English talking(ranting) with similar guitar sound throughout.
Remote Control is cute. But the rest are real banal? Thought they'd be a lot cooler than this and less affected-sounding.
Dragged a lot for a 35 minute album
nah
Idk man. Sounds kind of like a bunch of British dudes started getting after it in a pub with some singalongs. Not for me.
i might be getting listeners fatigue but this is just a band.
I was supposed to like this. Probably people did. It’s a punk album.
Tätä brittiläistä punkkia jossa menoa ja meininkiä ja yhteen ääneen huutamista.
just boring
Deny //
Have never liked Strummer's voice, and that's unfortunate because musically I do dig some of their stuff.
Nicht so meins
i like a lot of songs from the clash but wasn't so into this
Just not a fan of punk rock. It’s the vocals that kill it for me…usually sounds like some small, pasty guy with a pissy attitude whining in an echoey basement. A lot of angst and noise.
I’m not a huge fan of this era of punk. I get that it influenced other stuff but it’s not really appealing to listen to and just seems kind of juvenile lyrically.
IDK, pretty neutral about this one. The songs sound all the same, nothing really stood out. I think it didn't cross the "I like it".
An essential band but not an essential album
I know the Clash are THE punk band and this may be the ultimate album… but it’s not for me. In 1977 I would have been listening to - Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd,AC/DC, Clapton, STYX, Kansas- all the music the Clash is rebelling against. Add 48 years to the equation and the Clash are even less appealing to me now than they were then 2 stars
never got the clash. better punk out there
Underwhelmed for all the hype the clash gets
Ok album, wasn’t super interesting. No songs really stood out. Was easy to listen to but just didn’t hold my attention too much.
I REALLY do not like British punk. Everyone else really seemed to enjoy it, but personally, found something about it unenjoyable. 2/5.
Eh. 1.5 outta 5
Good, not my favorite.
I know it's punk and all but they don't really even seem to try and sign. But overall there were some good tracks.
Music is good, but can't understand a word they're saying. This American is so bored with The Clash. Fucking enunciate a word or two sometimes. Only decent songs were London's Burning and Police & Thieves. The Clash does go on to sing waaaaay better songs. This album is seriously by the same group that sang the excellent Should I Stay Or Should I Go? Rock The Casbah? I Fought The Law? Glad they got better after this. Best song: London's Burning
Hmm. Furious energy, sharp-edged commentary. But man, it’s three chords over and over.
They were not quite there yet
Ok
Classic punk. Cool lyrics awful music.
I don’t like this punk stuff.
What is the psychology behind me always loving the first song on an album, and then it seems to all go down hill for me after that? In this case, maybe I can only really enjoy 1 punk rock song before it's just a bunch of yelling and chanting.
This was a bit of a stinker for me. The music didnt feel exciting and I found some songs to be quite repetitive. I'm not a music savant, so maybe this comes down to a pure taste difference.
Another no from me
bof
I really wasn't tremendously impressed with The Clash when I got their London Calling album, and this album was significantly worse. British rock bands very seldom ever hit with me so I think it's just a matter of personal taste. Their musicianship is perfectly fine, but that is the only aspect of this album I found good and the only think that nets it an extra star. It would be a 1 otherwise.
Wow, what a great song they've recorded 14 times in a row! Fully enjoy the punk sound but they did not need to make so many songs with that same beat. Could have been a 4 or 5 track EP and I would have been content. I would play this album during one of my many montages of me hustling to work in the Big City, a restless corporate shill running late spilling my coffee, but sliding in to the Big Meeting juuuust in time with a few wrinkles in my white pressed shirt!
Kind of underwhelming given some of their hits. A bit repetitive
I’m a huge fan of London Calling, but honestly before this album, I don’t know how many songs I’ve heard of The Clash’s except of course their massive hits that everyone has heard. So I went into this with possibly too high hopes. I found this album to be mildly underwhelming. It has a few memorable tracks that I liked, 4 to be exact. The biggest problem is so much of the album feels like filler. Usually the criticism is that the forgettable tracks were “skips” not meaning like you don’t listen to them, but that you skip them after actually knowing them and knowing it’s got nothing for you. Well this album has an even worse version of that which are just forgettable. Like you put them on and they just sound like a wall of noise or they just sound so identical to the last song that your brain doesn’t even realize a new song has started. The best way to avoid this is with variety, but this album has very little variety. But if you like old school early British punk rock, then this is required listening. But inevitably you are gunna find better punk albums as you explore. This is just alittle too vanilla.
They sound like they could be drunk when they sing. Not really my thing.
Not that good.
Groupe connu, essentiellement par les morceaux 'Should I Stay or Should I Go' et 'I Fought the Law' que j'ai été amené à jouer et que j'apprécie. =>2/5
I don’t like this type of music. They all sound the same. They have funny accents like they say garage differently 😂. I don’t like this music. Idk I’m biased. Some songs were ok ig, but I wouldn’t listen.
Not my cup of tea
Mais I guess that’s the point? Je sais pas. J’aime pas le punk. 2/5 pas pour moi
Not the worst thing I’ve heard, but it wasn’t my favorite. My favorite song on this album was Police and Thieves.
listenable. old punk, nothing really catchy. stopped listening halfway through, nothing really jumping out at me. So far as I can tell, this album doesnt have any of their most popular songs, 2/5
I’d like this better if people stopped calling it punk
eeehhhh
I respect the Clash, but this punk album is not my thing.
Meh, not really to my taste. Nothing stood out to me and it all sounded very similar
new wave, punk, 1977 -> 2
Gee, I thought I wouldve liked this a lot more. Most of these tracks were more annoying than interesting. Hopefully we see a different Clash album later because I didnt see much of this album in their top 20 songs. At the end of the day, I appreciated White Riot. That song saved this from 1 star
I'm more of an '82 punk fan myself, so Clash sounds like rock music to me. Or ska, maybe not that much here tho. It's pleasant enough to listen to, but does not grab me at all. Barring historical reasons, this holds no value for me.
Just play the hits
Geezers need excitement
2.5
I'm not a huge punk fan, but The Clash has a certain digestibility that I can work with. While listening to this it struck me that I don't think they can capture the true energy of what the band was intending. Particularly for the time that this was recorded. I imagine seeing these songs played live vs listening to this album are two very different experiences. Might.be interesting to hear these songs re recorded with modern technology.
Tvær stjörnur
Speedy album. All done in around 30 mins. Not very memorable riffs. Thank you had to be there
BEST SONGS: - What's My Name - Career Opportunities
Meh. Angry dudes, no harmonies, messy guitars and drums. I can totally hear the influence on the Chilean band Los Prisioneros — and I think that’s exactly why I really don’t like this. There were a few songs with stuff I kinda liked, like Career Opportunities — the drums did something fun at one point. Police & Thieves had this reggae-ish vibe? And Garageland had a cool intro, but then the singer came in and it all fell apart. There’s a stepped-on, crushed Dorito on the floor — and that’s exactly how I feel listening to this. Bland and poorly executed.
The vocals ruined it for me.
I see why this is important but the style is not for me. I think I’ll enjoy layer clash albums more
Good, but not classic
Inoffensive British punk music. Not bad, nothing I would listen to regularly. All songs sound pretty similar, vocals are kinda irritating. Best song: police & thieves
man what where they doing pre london calling omg. i'm so glad they picked up their act for that album because this is just kinda bland but also the vocals are such an ick. the drummer baller tho
'I'm so Bored with the U.S.A'? Nah, I'm so bored with this album. This is rebellion for people who live in a Simpsons montage. I go into this album expecting something explosive and seminal and hard, and, of course, it is going to be dated -- and maybe it was controversial and electric for those at the time (which I actually doubt because it came out in 1977 so it wasn't even that early) -- but it is just limp. Again, maybe that is because of what has come after it and what has influenced the ground on which I stand, but right now I can't really vibe with it. It feels watered down. There is sometimes a foreshadowing of the Nirvana to come - like in the chords of the track 'Deny'. But I already have Nirvana. If I were to get somehow lost in it without expectation of reputation, then maybe I would like it for what it is, but I haven't. I have listened to other 'historic' (old, not necessarily legendary) songs and albums and can see a perennial newness in them as they become loosed from their storied historical contexts and are heard afresh. This hasn't happened here. The chords seem simplistic, the sound - perhaps too clean, and the political and societal commentary is not that cutting or clever. I can't imagine this ever being rebellious or cool. Really, I should like a mad young man shouting about how terrible society is and causing a ruckus, but alas. I did actually like the song 'Police & Thieves'. Again, I believe if we sit with an album for long enough with an open mind and full, concentrated, curious attention, then we can love any song as if it were our own. But then would everything get 5/5? So I instead go off first impressions, listen only once, and give cunty sweeping statements to make it interesting. I would be interested to hear more emotion and tender introspection interspersed with the shouting. I feel that would have given it a better chance at being timeless -- more sadness with the frustration. There are hints of this in the beginning of 'Garageland'. The backing vocals and harmonica and the chord changes almost seem like it is going to reach a deeper level, but it never really does. I think it is missing a tragicness to go along with its other elements. Is punk just synonymous with nitwitted? 2/5
A little too much punk for my taste.
didn't like. really not as listenable as their other stuff; wanted to skip which i basically never do
After first listen I am guessing you had to be there.
Not my thing but it’s not awful
I had the same band three days ago. I like punk as much as I like country, which isn’t very much. This is music equivalent of something, in my view, of a book on a bookshelf that you put there to show your eclectic taste but have no genuine interest in. There’s probably a word for it in German. Ultimately, this isn’t very good because it’s a punk album.
Still not a punk fan. There's a surprising diversity of styles on this album, though. 2 stars.
They got a lot better
not rly my style... maybe if they had a french freestyle gangsta rapper using the n word and talking about da hood.... nevertheless they are skilled at their craft, however for me it was rather uninteresting. peace out! i am racist and hate women
Theyre supposed to be important i think but it was boring
eat tha rich!!!!! with a little bit of sugar and spice :33333 ❤️❤️ not as good as london calling, but still tickles my nutsack like i get tingles and then it made me go and jerk my peen coz i got aroused... best believe the clash didn't make TS clash!!!! (lol) - i beat my shit. and i'm not proud of it... but im trying to improve, and thats all that matters. (JOKE) i beat my shit proudly to black guys - its called ebony. my friends dont know cuz i only said i beat it to nicacado avocado to throw them off. heh. little do they know im in love with niggas and im even tempted to do it in the school bathrooms... music! right! lets get back on track... idk ts was good or sum idek tbh listened to like a second and then got bored and clashed my shit to the pixies album cover. diddy be like: boi. anyway ive been typing for too long... probs boring yall by now...over and out! PS (imagine if it was TS): i DID NOT listen so im just gonna guess... 2!!! PPS: i like kids and im sus
Punk from this time is so hit and miss for me
Sounds generic
feels like im listening to the same song over and over again.
Punky album. But not really my jam.
this felt far too generic to interest me. i even came up with a clash song formula halfway through the album. pick a word or two. repeat that word. make your band members repeat that word. throw in a few lines in between repeating the word. repeat it some more. anyway at least it was only 35 minutes.
Too british
No aguanto más el rock inglés. Todo igual, todo insulso. Al menos estos están bordeando el punk. Pero guau, que manera de aburrirme. Nota: 1.8
cute little songs (derogatory)
This was a good Thursday afternoon album as I prepare to go see Kneecap all the way in Pomona. I'm not the world's biggest clash fan although I love Charlie Don't Surf and a few other hits. The clash are what they are and I'm happy about that I just never went through a deep dive. Don't have many prominent memories nor associations with them. I liked the "what's my naaaame naaaAAme Naaame NaaaaAAme"
Hmm okay a Clash album I have never listened to before (I don't think). I wonder if the other two Clash albums I have heard before are also on this list. After this album I will be 0.002% on my way to being okay to die. Can't die yet! I have upwards of 999 albums left to hear! The Clash are one of those bands that I don't think I've ever fully grasped. I can see why they're popular, but I don't think it's for me. Super popular pervasive beloved punk music is actually not very "punk" to me. Give me some punk that sounds like shit that everyone hates, that's how to be truly punk! The Clash are really just the Green Day of the late 70's / early 80's. SONG RANKING: Police & Thieves > White Riot > Garageland > Career Opportunities > Janie Jones > Cheat > Protex Blue > 48 Hours > London's Burning > Hate & War > Bored with USA > Remote Control > What's My Name > Deny Police & Thieves (a cover) is really good, but no song on this 1977 album is better than Clash City Rockers which I guess they release as a single in 1978. Too many songs on this album are not Police & Thieves or Clash City Rockers.
OK not my cup of tea
not a punk fan, all sounded the same..
I've never been a huge fan of the Clash outside of the hits. It's just okay for me. Mid 2s.
My first impression was these little fuggly British boys are lowkey annoying 😭 their voice just grating and the “punk” just kinda corny. They get points for being funny talkin bout Parliament like “they’re just old and fat” LOL. I really just am not feeling this one.
Not quite
Overrated but "classic"... Police and Thieves is a good cover but I'd rather the original.
The songs start to blend into each other but have plenty of individual highlights and grooves.
It was fine. Not my thing. It was funny how they kept telling me how to feel about the government and those in power. It wasn't even subtle or poetic. I guess that's rock though. Punk rock? Punk music...maybe?? Idk I'm unfamiliar
Wanted to like it but it just didn’t hit
I just wanted there to be a song called The Clash to triple up the name. Eh this music is fine. I took a class on Punk Rock in college and I just never really enjoyed the music
Song were very samey would like to see variation in the songs. Otherwise vocals sounded good and complimented the music well
Punk is cool. It gets you amped up like it should. An album’s worth of punk? It just doesn’t do it for me. It’s supposed to be short, punchy, to the point. This album is just too long to be that. Police and Thieves is a badass track. Garageland is sick. But those are probably the least punk songs on the album. Maybe I’m just not a punk guy…
Classic Punk Rock. Some Songs are good, other not so
Same as their album London Calling. It doesn't really land for me, or ring true. London Calling is a step above. I'm just not into early punk.
I'm not a big Clash fan, but I like London Calling, but had never heard this album before. I was kinda bummed, because I didn't really like it. I guess it was a little too punk for me. This ones 100% subjective, though. I can totally see how people could like it... just not me.
Not for me.
London Calling is obviously the better album.
Heard worse
it started off good, sometimes i though each song sounded a bit too similar, but it didn’t feel too jarring, and i enjoyed the consistency. but everything fell apart for me at track 7, deny, when i got it in my head that the lead vocalist, mr the clash, almost certainly had a speech impediment or at least has an obscenely wet mouth. from then on i couldn’t focus on anything but him pronouncing his th’s as ss and his s’s as th’s!! “deny, your thuch liar”. its so strange because it only seems to happen in the chorus of each song too, the first verses of protox blues and police & thieves sound great but as soon as the chorus hits all i can hear is how much saliva he has in his mouth. it just sounds like each time he takes a breath he’s actually taking a very small bite out of a sandwich and then continuing to sing. as someone who deeply hates mouth noises and eating asmr this is genuinely a form of torture. alas the guitarist is very talented and i can appreciate its sorta “we are playing this in a garage and the neighbours HATE us” vibes the whole album has really genuinely wish i hadn’t noticed it and could just enjoy without focusing on it, i’m aware how nit-picky and crazy i must look. i also adore any singer who just sounds ridiculously british, i also think every song is exactly the length it should be, it feels like they’d all work pretty good as an intermission between any two songs. also “don’t use the rules . they’re not for you they’re for the fools . and your a fool if you don’t know that . so use the rules you stupid fool” made me burst out laughing and i don’t really know why, he just really wants to let us know we are a fool.
This doesn't work for me unfortunately. (22 known/39 new)
Eh. It is what it is. Would do a 2 and a half if I could.
This was fine. I definitely liked it more than some other punk stuff (Ramones...) but I didn't love it. 2
nay
I know it's a culturally relevant album, but I could never get into it. It was difficult for me to sit and listen to it in its entirety. Joe Strummer's voice is awful...he just yells with no variation in tone through every song. All the songs sound the same to me. If you want to listen to the Clash, Combat Rock is the way to go...much more evolved in style and vocals.
"The Clash" is OK, it's very same-y from track to track, but it doesn't overstay it's welcome. Favorite track: "Cheat"
Enthusiastic punk. Entertaining, but not particularly good.
Not my cup of tea
The Clash - The Clash A decent punk rock album that, while not being as great as the albums that would be made later on, still had a fresh and rebellious sound to it, which was really great to hear, very consistent and catchy, it's really a fun album to listen! Overall, this is not bad. 1.- Janie Jones = 6/10 2.- Remote Control = 7/10 3.- I'm so Bored with the U.S.A. = 6/10 4.- White Riot = 6/10 5.- Hate & War = 7/10 6.- What's My Name = 7/10 7.- Deny = 8/10 8.- London's Burning = 8/10 9.- Career Opportunities = 6/10 10.- Cheat = 8/10 11.- Protex Blue = 6/10 12.- Police & Thieves = 7/10 13.- 48 Hours = 6/10 14.- Garageland = 7/10 FINAL SCORE: 6.7/10
not for me
For the track What's My Name, a YouTube comment says "I like to imagine taking out the hymnals and singing this song in church. Makes me laugh." This kind of puerile, knee-jerk anti-authoritarianism attitude is what I was expecting from this album and it's what I got. Simplistic, but the world needs this kind of thing, and I like the cut of their jib, if not their music. They do sound very amateur, like your schoolfriend's first band practicing in his garage.
You can see how they defined the genre of punk... but also solidified punk is not for me.
I appreciate the historical significance of this band, but I don't really enjoy listening to it. The music is well done, if simple. The vocals just don't do it for me. If you like punk a whole lot you might enjoy this more than me.
The way the lead singer enunciates his words just makes me laugh, he's so pissed off but also sounds drunk? he slurs a lot of words but really goes for them
It was ok, didn't partucularly like this one.
I love The Clash, though I think they reached their creative peak in later albums such as London Calling, Sandinista and Combat Rock, so I didn’t spend as much time with this one in the past. This is a good punk album. Rough and gritty yet melodic and catchy. Anthemic yet relatable. It got some very strong songs like What’s My Name and 48 Hours. On Police & Thieves we get hints of their future musical tendencies to involve ska into their sound. Thing is I don’t it stands up to the rest of their catalog, and if this album was the only thing The Clash ever released… then they wouldn’t be The Clash. I don’t think it belongs on this list and as much as it pains me I can’t give it more than two stars.
It's okay. Not really my speed though.
Nah - not today at least
not my thing, half of these songs are on the playlist at work drive me crazy lol
Classic 80s British rock
Yeah it’s definitely an early punk rock album. It was a groundbreaking piece of counter-culture at the time. Through modern lens I’d call it mostly a snoozefest, honestly. Musically it’s pretty lazy, but it’s hard to fault a punk rock record for powerchords and simple drum beats. I honestly don’t have a lot to say about this record, I’m a fan of a lot of punk rock bands, but The Clash just ain’t for me. 2*. Could be worse.
Tbf has ned fest glost, aber Isch mer zu 0815 rockig
nicht mein Fall
Really unphenomenal
Mehhhhh some decent tunes but a bit shouty for me
#394. I just don't get what people see in The Clash. It's alternately annoying or boring. 2/5: tiresome
Not as good as London Calling, just decent.
I'm glad that this album exists, but I'm not expecting to be listening to it again.
Not bad, but nothing I feel particularly blown away by. But I'm not a big fan of punk to begin with, so that fact that I found this inoffensive means it's probably pretty good to a more neutral listener. Concise without being grating or shrieky. Top tracks: Janie Jones, London's Burning
Appreciate it especially while reading Billy Idol's book, but not really my vibe.
This may clash with people on here, but I didn't care for this album at all. It 's loaded with basic English Rock tunes Favorite Song: "White Riot"
Good for aggressive cycle. Not my vibe tho
Thought I'd enjoy this more than I actually did
boring !
Punk is as Punk does. 2/5
honestly I was pretty excited to get The Clash because I was so ready for a classic british rock band but I hate to say I was disappointed. I can’t totally pin point what about it I didn’t love, I think it was to like twingey for me if you hat makes sense. I felt like it didn’t mesh well or something? I don’t know what exactly the issue was but something didn’t click for me.
Not a punk listener, and, I haven't listened to any Clash. Totally fresh perspective. Meh. Not my thing, very forgettable. Maybe listening on a Sunday night at 8pm didn’t set the right tone but I have no desire to revisit.
The angst is lost on me. I appreciate it, though.
always found The Clash to be a bit overrated.
Much punk. 5/10
idk dude
I get that this was super influential, but its just not for me.
The Clash might be my favorite punk rock band. But I hate punk rock, so that makes them my 10,000th or so favorite band overall, behind basically all bands in all genres I don’t hate, except Radiohead. Even a punk rock band can be better than Radiohead. But most punk rock bands aren’t even good enough to be better than Radiohead, and that is really saying something, cause Radiohead sucks. Punk rockers are the ultimate posers. It’s all an act. Punk rock is the least authentic genre of music ever. It was invented by a clothing store owner to sell T-shirts to scene kids (https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/music/1420480/Sex-Pistols-manager-Malcolm-McLaren-punk-rock-johnny-rotten-evg/amp). Even the cheesiest musicians generally care about music. But not punk rockers. They only care about looking cool and drinking or shooting heroin and being angry at whatever they are angry at. And most of them are too dumb to even articulate what it is they are angry at. Pop garbage is made by people who only care about making money and being famous instead of music and punk rock is made by people who only care about looking cool and drinking or shooting heroin and being angry instead of music. The entire genre is a put-on that only the truly, deeply stupid fall for. All that being said, the Clash are okay.
Could be good if you're in the mood for it, but won't put you in a good mood by itself. Bored with the USA is good
It’s just a fact of life. No matter how much I listen to The Clash, they will always make feel a bit depressed. I just find the delivery soul destroying, terrible singers, bang average guitars and terrible production. However, they actually have decent lyrics and something to say, which is more than most punks bands. Which all in all it does just generally evoke the relatively depressing times of the late 70s in the UK. I prefer music to make me smile, so for me, this just makes me want to stop listening to it. It should be a 1*, but I’ll give it an extra mark for them actually having something positive to say.
Boring poppy rock.
The Clash are like a worse version of Ramones. Every song sounds the same, but the song isn't quite as good as the Ramones. Overall just kinda mediocre and forgettable. I'm just not a big fan.
I didnt listen to but i need to
I never really got how good people think this band is.
Their lyrics might be cool, but their music feels so redundant and boring. I must admit I'll never be able to love The Clash.
I was never that fussed about The Clash. Sure, not as shite as The Sex Pistols but no way near as talented or interesting as The Jam, The Police or Elvis Costello.
Debut is often less iconic than other albums
I like "London Calling" more but there are some quintessential punk songs like 'Police and Thieves' on this album.
I just find early punk to be so repetitive and boring. It’s not awful if this is your thing, but 30 one minute songs that all sound like they are slightly different arrangements of the same song just isn’t my thing.
t'was good but nothing foreign or unique to my ears
It’s all just so similar and so simply written it doesn’t leave anything interesting unless you really like the straightforward punk sound. 4/10
I was surprised how little of the signature sound and attitude from The Clash is on this. I didn't realize how relatively tame the early punk scene was. I'm sure it was iconic upon release for reasons I don't know but not sure what stands out about this album. It's an OK listen to nowadays but nothing I need to revisit. Pretty forgettable for the most part. Not what I expected. Felt way longer than 35 mins for some reason. 2.05 stars
Snively. No thanks. 1.92
I was expecting better, tbh! All sounds a bit samey, and, dare I say, flat! Didn't really enjoy it much.
Blimey these guys didn’t start out all that great?! The groundwork for their future success and best stuff is there, but this definitely doesn’t really have the magic of their classics. Similarly to with Sonic Youth, I didn’t find myself convinced by the vocals, and the instrumentals to match felt a bit weaker, hence the lower rating. I am also wanting to hear some punk on this list that feels more angry and passionate!! With Zack De La Rocha of Rage Against The Machine, for example, you can really feel his burning frustration through his voice! I want that!
It’s alright. Decent early punk but nothing blew me away, I think their later stuff is better.
Childish, but the album is about 50 years old. I could see myself being into it as an American 15 years old.
Yeah, they were very, very popular. Personally, I could never take to their music. With every album on 1,001 I do always listen to each track.
hey hey hey hey... a bit hyper and other songs felt repetitive. Remote Control was the only one that I liked.
Eh
Call me crazy but I really don't care for the The Clash. Mid instrumentation in my opinion and the vocals are just very grating.
Would it be fair to say not their best?
# 231 : Yeah, Nah!
Never was a big fan of The Clash, but I understand the interest, 2 stars
A fine entry but not something I would listen to again
The Clash’s The Clash is a loud mess. I was extremely disappointed by this album, as the band was proclaimed to be exceptional, this album genre-defining. To be fair, I shouldn’t have expected much when that genre is punk. While it’s not terrible, no song provides any value. Some are better than others, but they are all better left unheard of. Maybe one of their newer albums will fare better. All in all, The Clash is a bad album. Best Song: London's Burning Worst Song: Protex Blue
God this sound is so boring to me. Music is so much better now its crazy
I don’t get the hype. I enjoyed Police and Thieves though
was the beginning of the punk invasion of smash music
Ultimately this album just didn't do it for me. I'm a fan of punk and recognize that the Clash are a major part of popularllizing the genre but they have better albums than this. None of the songs stood out as genre defining and much of it melted together sound wise. I will continue listening to The Clash but probably not this album.
Like a barely more understandable Ramones. Not a compliment
Didn’t dislike this as much as I would have in the 70s but nevertheless it was quite a racket and not something I would choose to listen to again. A meagre 2*
A collection of short uninteresting songs
I didn't get on board with The Clash until "Combat Rock". I've never gone back to explore there other albums. Not sure why, just stuck with the hits. This one was OK. Nothing to exciting for me.
Not as good as I remembered it to be! A bit of a school ground racket
nahhhh
Never was a fan. This album didn't change my opinion.
Every song sounds the same
Feel like they have better albums
For a rockin' punk band with an unsubtle political stance, this album is really, really boring. It's not bad, but I have absolutely no feelings for it whatsoever. At least this band would go on to make some actual great music. Best Song: Janie Jones Worst Song: Police and Thieves Underrated Gem: idfk uhhh Career Opportunities i guess Punk Reggae: Police and Thieves Album Score: 4/10
I was looking forward to this, but it turned out to be rather dull and uninspiring. Even the tracks I thought I knew turned out to be lacklustre versions. Not great = two stars.
Despite being considered a classic punk album, I wasn’t a fan of their voices and the lack of organization in their sound
Alright.
Thank god they evolved from this. Reminds me of a junior high band that thinks their “passion” makes up for bad musicianship. The Ramones and Sex Pistols had already done this stripped-down style, and better.
Not a massive punk fan, it was ok but always a bit shouty, my favourite song was police and thieves which turns out to be a reggae cover which explains that
Rough but a good listen
It's punk — nothing more than that! I like The Clash but had never heard this before. And I was a bit disappointed of how bland it was. Looking back, punk didn't really bring too much to music apart from some catchy tunes and an annoying mentality among youth (yes, I do prefer prog, yacht rock and disco). This just sounds like The Ramones, just more drunk.
I really thought I would like this
more music that is now boring because everyone copied them. also i don't like the vocals
Kinda generic, nothing really stood out.
meh
Album no. 5/1001 I like something about the rock feel, but the main singer's voice is unpleasant to listen to and I have no personal association. (X couldn't stand it at all)
A little too punk for me.
I’ve never understood the hype around The Clash. I’ve never found them very “punk”. The opening track “Janie Jones” I really liked. Listened to the whole thing. I still don’t get the hype. They have the look and imagery, but nothing in the music spoke to me at all.
Sure may have been revolutionary at the time, but ngl now just annoying. Was quite happy for the album to end
The songs I like I really like, but most of the album is not for me
“Janie Jones” en ouverture est sympa, comme “I'm so bored with the USA” mais ils me perdent très vite.
I like London Calling for sentimental reasons but the rest of the album is too punk and I don't like the voice.
A bit boring to listen to
Pretty disappointed in this one as I like some of their later stuff
Not my type of music. It sounds cheap and “tinny” to me.
Yes, this is punk. Fast, simple, dirty. I appreciate the influence punk rock has had to modern musik. This boys brought some really new ideas to the 1970 and sometimes I like it mixed in my daily stream. "London Calling" is one of my favorits. I also like "Should I Stay or Shoul I go". But this album is not on my top list.
I don’t like punk I’m realizing
Yuck. These guys are to blame for all the boring bland corporate American punk bands. Joe Strummer's Mockney accent is a joke and isn't White Riot just a bit racist? Can't be doing with it.
Again, not my cup of tea besides the well known hit. Don't see why it had so much impact.
boring old rock
I do like Punkrock! However, I did not enjoy this album.
not a huge punk fan
When this album first started I thought we were in for a good score, I really liked the first song Janie Jones. Had I stopped there it probably would have made a 4 star review however the rest of the album wasn't up to much
One sound that is alright, I guess, repeated for an entire album. This kind of punk music seems like something I could be into, bit kinda disappoints me whenever I actually listen to it.
ta maomeno
not bad but like it barely gets my attention tbh
Cool feel for it’s time but not my cup of tea
I understand this is an important album in the history of punk rock but it just wasn’t my thing. Maybe I just don’t like punk rock enough to appreciate it, but aside from the occasional decent guitar part, there wasn’t much for me to love here.
Just okay. Later albums are better
70s brit rock is not my jam... sounds all the same to me.
All songs blend don’t think I’ll really listen again but not the worst.
This was ok. Better than a lot of the older punk so far on this list, but not something I'm likely to return to. 2/5
Whatever i Don't like rock
Prog rock lepszy
What if you booked a recording studio and played bad? The innovation of punk rock.
Still no female artist :( I'm not a fan of punk rock, sorry, I find this album boring (although it's well recorded).
I appreciate the vibe, but not this album.
Loud. Not for me but I can appreciate what it’s trying to do. Would’ve been crazy live
Weird...
It's like the British decided to make a surfer album and the rest of th eworld were like "uhh no that's not it". So, to save face they labeled it a new cool genre "Punk Rock" They get 2 stars for being so inspirational to other bands and projects after them. And in that sense, they are like the Beatles for me. I do not like them, but i can respect that people have and even still do.
Just too raw and unmelodic
- im bored of the usa and white riot were all right - the rest largely samey and boring, some glimmer of something new in the police and thieves one but not very much - gets better when you're reading the lyrics cause for the life of me i cannot understand punk vocals - idk not really for me but I liked two songs off it so 2.5/5
I expected I’d love this… didn’t get me
Meh. A couple really good songs. Some unlistenable songs
