I don't think I'll ever like the Clash. Every song from them that I listen to just meshes together. I'm sure London Calling is on this list, and maybe that will end up speaking to me more, but as we are I've yet to find a Clash song I want to return to.

Alright.

In the past I have only listened to the Clash's top hits. They definitely had a unique sound and were a groundbreaking and pivotal band for the punk genre. Although they're not my personal favorite I do appreciate their music and their contribution to rock and roll history. They definitely deserve to be on this list.

Classic 77 punk album. Hell of a debut as well. Solid through and through and makes an immediate stance that lasts their entire career. Great production as well, love the bass tone through this entire album

not as poppy/polished as London Calling but there are a lot of great songs on this album. Police and Thieves is one of my favorites.

Really fun album. Really inspired the punk rock scene today. I hear their sounds in green day and alike bands. Nothing crazy special, i prefer London calling as you get some more variation. For this type of album where it’s hard-punk-rock mostly they hit the song/album length right at 35 Mins as any more would be in excess. 3.5/5

The clash again. Starting to feel like homework…

Thank god they evolved from this. Reminds me of a junior high band that thinks their “passion” makes up for bad musicianship. The Ramones and Sex Pistols had already done this stripped-down style, and better.

Bij Polive & Thieves hoor je al de reggae invloeden terug die in latere albums een prominentere plek gekregen hebben. Offbeat gitaar en jamaicaans uitgesproken tekstjes. Lekker album, al gaat mijn voorkeur uit naar London Calling en Sandinista. Highlights: I’m so bored with the USA, White Riot. Rating: 8/10

Als je aan het jaar 1977 denkt, dan denk je aan strakke spijkerbroeken, leren jackets met anarchistische emblemen en combat boots. Het was het jaar dat de meeste early punk bands voor het eerst de studio in gingen en hun onvrede over autoritair Engeland, en de mensheid in het algemeen, op wax lieten vastleggen. Zo ook punk royalties The Clash, die aftrapten met hun self-titled album. Nog specifieker, dat deden ze met de banger 'Janie Jones'. Waar vaak wordt gerefereerd aan Buzzcocks als het begin van de samensmelting van pop en punk elementen, laat Joe Strummer in dit nummer direct de appeal van de band zien die verder ging dan de rebelse jeugd en andere outsiders. De bite van de snelle riffs en militante vocalen creëerden een blauwdruk voor vele punk genres die volgden, terwijl de aanstekelijke chorus ook liet doorschijnen dat punk naast een sociale uitlaatklep ook gewoon stond voor plezier maken. Briljante opener. Het zou het begin zijn van 9 minuten aan fenomenale punk, niets minder dan een waardige eerste kennismaking met The Clash. De antiautoritaire song 'Remote Control' zoekt nóg meer de melodie op dan het openingsnummer. Het gitaarspel is minder agressief is, en toont soms meer overeenkomsten met de muziek van tijdsgenoten die verantwoordelijk waren voor de mod revival. The Jam begon met de productie van hun debuut een maand nadat dit album uitkwam, en ik kan me zo voorstellen dat Paul Weller een kopietje had. 'I'm so Bored with the U.S.A.' komt wat dichter bij de boze punk van de Sex Pistols. Hij geeft een startschot voor de diepgewortelde haat van de band aan het grote broertje aan de overkant van the Atlantic, die later in hun carrière werkelijk tot kunst werd verheven ('Sandinista!'). Ondanks dat hij wat steviger is, is hij wel weer gewoon goddamn catchy. Die storm van politieke energie komt helemaal tot opwelling in 'White Riot', een poster child voor activistische muziek die het aanstaande decennium kleur gaf. Killer guitars, en ongetwijfeld een inspiratie voor de hardcore punk die een aantal jaren later op zou doemen in Amerika. Een debuutwerk is vaak grillig, wat geen verrassing mag zijn. Jammer genoeg is deze dat ook, en wordt aan het summum van punk waar we in de eerste fase van de plaat mee verwend werden geen passend vervolg gegeven. 'What's My Name' bevat nog een gruwelijke gitaarlijn, zo eentje waar East Bay Ray van de Dead Kennedys z'n loopbaan aan heeft toegewijd. En dieper in het album vinden we toch nog een monumentaal hoogtepunt in 'Police & Thieves', een meesterwerk van Lee ''Scratch'' Perry in een leren punkjasje. Een key moment in rock, waar relaxte reggae invloeden de onstuimige punkwereld injecteerden. Eerst met mondjesmaat, en later met Ska tot gevolg. Er valt te twisten over of hij beter is dan het origineel, maar het origineel had geen Paul Simonon. Wat een fucking bass line boys. Logischerwijs kijk ik bij de beoordeling van deze plaat met een schuin oog naar die andere hoeksteen in de punk historie, het album van de Sex Pistols dat hetzelfde jaar uit kwam. Dit album is meer een group effort dan het werk van hun Londense collega's, en de songwriting van Strummer en Jones, strakke drums van Topper, en magnifieke bass van Simonon, leveren in ieder geval een gevarieerder muziekstuk af dan de Sex Pistols. Je hoort echt dat dit album belangrijke zaadjes plantte voor verschillende punkstijlen die volgden. Je kunt denk ik wel stellen dat de genre pushing quality van dit album de Sex Pistols doet verbleken, terwijl 'Never Mind the Bollocks' meer culturele waarde had én de sterkere singles. Weetje, ik kan niet kiezen, ook deze krijgt een 7,5. Het album maakt op mij niet zo'n onuitwisbare eerste indruk als het debuut van The Damned en Wire in hetzelfde jaar, maar het is zeker een respectabele aanzet naar wat twee jaar later komen zou.. 7,5 Highlights: Janie Jones I'm so Bored with the U.S.A. Ik zal nooit vergeten dat ik deze plaat vond bij Variaworld in Deventer. Even laten staan, verder zoeken naar mooie pareltjes... en nooit meer teruggevonden. Zo uit mijn handen geglipt. The Clash is fantastisch en het is heerlijk om ook weer door deze plaat in de punk te duiken. Zo'n korte tijdsperiode waarin zoveel gebeurde. Op een avond de Sex Pistols zien spelen, paar vrienden bij elkaar zetten, 3 weekendjes opnemen, foto in een steegje maken, 4.000 dollar ertegenaan en één van de grootste bands van het moment is geboren. "Punk is the future!" Maar dan toch. London Calling (1979!) is eigenlijk al een stap uit de punk. Hoewel de iconische hoes anders doet vermoeden is London Calling een eerste stap in de New Wave en daarom muzikaal gezien ook vele malen beter dan dit album. The Clash - The Clash wordt daarom eigenlijk altijd overschaduwd door London Calling, die veel iconischer is (mede door de hoes en hits). In het tijdsgewricht en binnen de echte punk-periode is dit album wel weer veel belangrijker. Deze plaat is pure punk in de meest simpele vorm. Ruig, rammelend, kort, DIY en anti-establishment. Daarover geen kwaad woord. Pure punk is alleen gewoon niet het beste en leukste genre om muzikaal van te genieten. Een tweede manco van dit album; de hoes is niet iconisch geworden. Solid punk fun

Estamos en una época de crisis. Puntualmente, en Latinoamérica. Y más específicamente, en Argentina. Y siempre ante las crisis, el arte ha planteado respuestas. El punk fue en su momento eso: una vanguardia, una crítica desde un sonido nuevo, una estética que abrazaba a la clase trabajadora, a los invisibilizados por el sistema. Añoro que, como fue en su momento con el género y con The Clash, esta época permita las condiciones para un neo-punk, una fusión musical o, quién te dice, un género nuevo. Ah, y éste disco es un caño.

Really thought I was going to hate this album but it ended up being an okay listen. Although I'm not discovering my favorite new artists with this app regularly, I do like that it's changing some of my preconceived notions I have about some artists (for good and bad in some cases)

Considering the speed with which this album was written and recorded, it's stuffed with attitude and great tracks. It's also one of the albums which kicked off the UK punk boom. One of my favourite LPs.

punk as expected, but almost more of an anthem

I dislike the clash. Hypocrites. Posers. W*nkers. Try hards. Then you play them and they are genuinely one of the best bands ever. What a debut. London calling is one of the great songs of the punk era and maybe even of the rock era. So you give them one for being wankers and 12 for how good they are. I’ll average it to a 5.

I wasn’t a fan of The Clash when I first heard their early singles. Strummer did not thrill me as a front man like Rotten did. I was besotted with The Sex Pistols & then pretty quickly moved onto new wave bands like Costello & The Attractions & later The Pretenders. I pretty much ignored The Damned & The Clash. Until the release of London Calling, released in the last month of the 70’s, when, all of a sudden the band started doing tunes, not so much just anthems. All of a sudden they seemed like a different band. Then in the early 80’s I became friendly with young blokes who adored the band, & Strummer particularly, as much for their politics as for that early sound. And that’s when I heard this album a lot & started to appreciate its highlights. And there are plenty. Janie Jones kicks the album off at lightning speed. I’m So Bored With The U.S.A. seems to use a riff very similar to the opening of The Pistols’ Pretty Vacant(Glen Matlock always said it was inspired by hearing ABBA’s S.O.S) which was recorded a month before the Clash song. White Riot is probably the standout. It was also their first single, based on Strummer’s recollections of the famous Notting Hill riots of 1976. It moves at a furious pace. I love the lyrics to Career Opportunities & the song about condoms, Protex Blue. And Garageland is a good closer. And, of course I’ll be forever grateful for The Clash introducing me to Junior Murvin’s Police & Thieves, one of the 70’s greatest reggae tunes. The version here doesn’t compare with the original, but the content fits so well with the rest of the album.

I remember being 18 and sitting in the back of a Volkswagen beetle, a bit drunk and possibly a bit high, driving at night through the back roads of the NSW southern highlands with some new friends that I did not actually know very well. I had very little idea of where I actually was or even where we were going. “What’s this?” I asked of the music blasting out of the tape player., “The Clash” came the reply. “OK” I thought and settled back in to listen. I think it was London Calling (“Piece of piss, next one’s a triple”), which is still my favourite Clash album. That said, I was never fanatical about The Clash. There are many people that I respect and admire who definitely bought into the cult of The Clash (The Best Live Band in The World! The Last Gang in Town! The Only Band That Matters! Rebels With A Cause), but I never did. I tried, believe me. I wanted to fall in love with Joe Strummer, last true rock star, real champion of the people, prophet of the oppressed, speaker of truth to power, and his gang of genuine punk rockers I felt somewhat uncool and déclassé for not being hip to their jive. I certainly felt it during that car ride. And then I read Marcus Gray’s Last Gang in Town: The Story and Myth of the Clash, which was eye-opening. It embraced the complexity of The Clash. They were all those things that people lauded them for, but also not. Joe Strummer was a champion of the real people, but also a bandwagon-jumper, elite public-school boy and the son of diplomat. The band was equally motivated by shagging models and doing coke in the back of the limo as they were in tearing down capitalism (maaaaan!). I found it easier to understand why I had always been a little suspicious of their role as saviours of rock and socialist champions (unwarranted? unwanted even?). They were a chaotic and ambitious band, with limited and slippery grasp on the political realities they were trying to express. But it was reasonably heartfelt, most of the time, but just the well-intentioned and poorly considered proclamations of mere musicians. In the words of Scroobius Pip: “The Clash? Just a band”. But on this record, there is a genuine anger. Strummer might not have grown up in the tower blocks of South London, but he channels it brilliantly. He may have been jumping onto the punk bandwagon, but he did so quickly and powerfully that he helped establish the blueprint for English punk rock. The lyrics are striking and incisive, generally avoided polemic, there are some cracking tunes, and the whole thing rocks hard. There were more inventive albums to follow, but this is the one where they aren’t distracted by every idea that flits by. It’s focused and intense and energizing to listen to. Janie Jones, I’m So Bored with the USA, White Riot, Career Opportunities and the cover of Police & Thieves are all highlights, but there aren‘t many dead spots on the record. They were a tight live band and could smash it out in the studio. I think Strummer matured as he aged, and regretted losing sight of the vision that they laid out on this first album. I was genuinely moved by the way Marcus Gray reports him as looking back on the Clash’s career and saying that ‘we blew it’. I was going to give this three stars, but have managed to convince myself that this is four star record.

The only Clash album I've listened to before today is London Calling (which I bought because of the 1001 albums book), but it's been a hot minute since I've listened to it. This self titled effort from The Clash is pretty good. The best thing that this album has going for it is it's distinctly The Clash; the band never tries to be The Ramones or The Sex Pistols, and they do a great job of crafting their own unique sound. The guitar playing is pretty straightforward, but there's something unique in the tone that really sets The Clash apart. I enjoy both Jones's and Strummer's vocals, and I was glad that they both got some time on lead vocals on this album. My favorite thing about this album was the lyrics. For what feels like the hundredth time on this list, it's yet another album singing about things that still plague the world today: racial tension and inequality, the slog of working life, the neverending funding of war, and on and on. The band does such a great job of channeling anger and disillusionment into their lyrics, and their own brand of punk politics further differentiates them from other punk acts of the time. Overall, this isn't my favorite album by any stretch, but it's really well done, and it's an important moment in the history of rock music.

6/10. Some great songs but as an album gets a bit stale with no change in pace, same screaming voice. Not so much my thing. But would like a song or two in the mix amongst other genres. specifically Janie Jones, London’s Burning and Career Opportunities.

Great album!

fantastic energy and vibrancy. These aren't just songs they are prophesy. This was SERIOUS ROCK n' Roll-total rebel music as intended. The Clash delivered.

About damn time

Its an enjoyable record with classic punkiness. Whilst it hasn't exactly dated, it does feel a bit underwhelming and doesn't exactly stand-out. It has some interesting instrumental passages, but the album as a whole was quite repetitive for mine. Fav track: I'm so bored with the USA

A straight up and down great punk album. Some of their more ambitious work to come with mixing genres and tones are maybe more interesting but I have pretty few complaints here. A classic for a reason. Fave track: Police and Thieves

It's punk — nothing more than that! I like The Clash but had never heard this before. And I was a bit disappointed of how bland it was. Looking back, punk didn't really bring too much to music apart from some catchy tunes and an annoying mentality among youth (yes, I do prefer prog, yacht rock and disco). This just sounds like The Ramones, just more drunk.

BL: Listened to this album before and thought it was incredibly compelling, always saw The Clash as more compelling punk rockers than that of the Sex Pistols. AL: still as decent as I remember it. I find it hard to really get into any punk records as I think they don’t have longevity - only short bursts of anger, but this is one of the better punk records out there to be sure. Thoughts before listening: Of all the early punk bands, the Clash have been the biggest influence on the brand of punk rock I've always gravitated to. This is my favorite release by them, even better than London Calling which gets most of the praise. There are a ton of iconic songs on this genre-defining album. This will be 5-stars. Review: A less snotty, more tuneful take on punk rock than what contemporaries like the Sex Pistols were producing at the same time. They also brought a point of view to the lyrics tackling social and political concerns that turned Joe Strummer into a generational spokesperson. "Janie Jones", "I'm So Bored With the USA", "White Riot", "London's Burning", and "Career Opportunities" are aboslute classics of the punk genre and 70s rock as a whole. Easy 5-star album.

Very very Brit Rock in the first couple seconds. I like that it has a bunch of short songs, it pleases my simple monkey brain. I also like the British talk-singing. Boing-boing noise haha.

A fantastic mix of melody, anger, guitars, swagger. I grew up on the US version, which is inferior to this one, although I miss "Complete Control"--perhaps my all-time favorite Clash song.

Points for being the progenitor for a lot of great music, but man it sounds so generic because of how many better copycats that have been released.

Such a classic. I actually haven’t listened to this as much as London Calling, so it’s good to give it a real listen. Love the lead guitar on White Riot! The influence this album made cannot be ignored! It’s a solid 4.5 or so, I think it edges out Ramones’ debut, but I also gotta leave room for London Calling. This one leaves me wanting more Police & Thieves. Maybe I’m just not that punk rock. But man this is one of the best.

Good English punk album.

The Clash get so much better.

I want to revisit. I really got into it by the end.

For early punk, it's impressive. Yet, it is not something that I enjoy listening to.

Needed more reggae-ska influence

A classic of British punk. Unlike American punk at the time, British Punk was more political and less infused with humor. This album, alongside the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bullocks, set the tone for much of what came out of the UK. These are songs dripping with social commentary, much of which was lost on a teenage American audience. What we American teens didn't get from the content, we certainly got in raw angst. After a while, they softened their sound a bit. They were still angry but not quite so loud. By the time London's Calling was released, there were more pop hooks in The Clash's music. This album is the band at their most intimidating, honest, and potent.

Okay, don't really get the hype

Fine Punk Rock.

The Clash was a pretty alright album. The music was pretty good and while the vocals were a bit weird at first, I eventually did get used to them. While the songs did sound a little bit samey, The album cut a quick pace so that wasn't too much of an issue for me. Best Song: Protex Blue Worst Song: Janie Jones

Foundational music. Would have liked to see more credit to the artists they covered though.

"Janie Jones" was my imaginary punk rock girlfriend when I was filled with teen angst. I had no idea who she really was. She would have been an even cooler girlfriend, it appears. "I'm So Bored with the USA" was my mantra for a while in high school when it fueled my Reagan hatred and justified my disdain for our foreign policy. Like with many songs, I had no idea what the lyrics to "White Riot" were about. I appreciate them even more now but at the time they were perfect for venting teenage energy. These guys were my secret brothers growing up in Wyoming when everyone was listening to Foreigner or some other crapola.

There are moments both dynamic and biting, but also some raggedness and some sense of being unformed that suggest that future success was in no way assured. This lot got so much better the more they diversified the sound. Conversely, how would we rate this record had they not worked out to be the Clash? Maybe one of the editors saw them live before this came out and was so blown away, etc. etc. Record gets considerably better as it moves along – "Cheat" and "Police & Thieves" and "Garageland" feel like the best cuts on a disc that would be better still with a hit. Proves the theory that first record isn't always the best or coolest. Kind a feel like it's need a clear "hit" or an outright classic track to be a truly world-class debut. Rounding up because, you know, The Clash.

Album no. 5/1001 I like something about the rock feel, but the main singer's voice is unpleasant to listen to and I have no personal association. (X couldn't stand it at all)

I’m sure this was innovative punk sound for their time as you can see their influence on the US punk rock scene. They certainly have some strong opinions about the British government and society.

It was decent. I don’t what else to say

Ok so I know what you're thinking. "Kieran I thought you loved punk how could you only give this album a 3?" Well I do love punk so just hear me out. This album is good but honestly I don't think it is great. Most of that has to do with Joe Strummer who does the lead vocals for most of their work. I don't like it. I don't like his voice and it is really hard to understand what in the world he is saying most of the time. Should I Stay or Should I Go is one of their best songs but that is sung by Mick Jones not Strummer. I really don't feel like this album is super special. I'm sure it was at the time because this was the birth of political punk as we know it (maybe not quite stylistically cause it is quite slow by comparison to punk in Cali later when punk became a big thing) but definitely in lyrics. However I think that kind of hurts it in the long run because eventually you will have people born (like me) who have no idea what events they are referencing and it has not meaning to us, which drains the songs (and the album) of some of its punch.

Likely a top 5 genre setting album for punk. The Clash has been noted as "the only band that matters" and you can tell where they are headed on this STD. Their equally influential peers lacked the musicality of the Clash. That ability carried the Clash through waves of stylistic changes and tweaks, creating one of the more well rounded discographies of this time period. That said, this album sneaks a peak at that ability vs some of their contemporaries (looking at you Sex Pistols) but the style and ethos are there. Every track brings something to the table but highlights for me are the opening Janie Jones, I'm so Bored with the USA, Career Opportunities, Police & Thieves (showing early ska reggae influences that would become more prevalent) It's a great album and likely the second starting point for the Clash after London Calling (another excellent album).

I expected this to be good. It is not.

It's a good album to present punk's beginnings, full of electric guitars and basic music structures with catchy choruses and a response game with the main vox and guitars, good production techniques. Every song has a different personality with the same esence of punk rock.

Never heard this album or any of the songs on it, but I’m familiar with the band especially the album “London Calling” which I used to listen to a long time ago and always thought was great. This album seemed a little repetitive and I really couldn’t understand the lyrics but seems like a true punk album whereas “London Calling” had its punk roots but branched out musically. I Sure hope that album is on the list too because it deserves to be. But was glad I listened to this one.

I’ve never understood the hype around The Clash. I’ve never found them very “punk”. The opening track “Janie Jones” I really liked. Listened to the whole thing. I still don’t get the hype. They have the look and imagery, but nothing in the music spoke to me at all.

The clash comes in with an incredible debut with a piece of anti-administration real rebel music and messages that we have heard time and time again Yet THIS BEING THE ERA where it was founded in song makes this so much more impactful. The highs of this album for me are Remote Control, White Riot, Deny, Career Opportunities, Police and Thieves, and GarageLand. I hear where the Smiths and Ramones and others got influenced by this record even modern punk records like Neck deep self-titled and Mgk pop punk records LOL. I love this album for a long time

This album zooms by, you almost miss how good it is. The Clash were always the right mix, not as snotty and ratty as the Sex Pistols, not as arty as the Jam, but just enough of each to craft memorable tunes as forbearers of the genre. While I don’t think this album is nearly as good as London Calling, it does hold up surprisingly well, the production is high quality, and there are enough classic songs here to make it a classic album.

Some toe-tappers, some head bobbers. But honestly, nothing I was super into. I know it was revolutionary for its time and the music itself was tight, but punk has come so far from this. Your grandpa certainly thought this was as extreme music could get.

Not a fan. Attended a Who concert in 1982. The Clash was the opening act. Fans were not pleased and flipped them off most of the show.

i’m familiar with the clash of course but I’ve never listened to their self-titled debut until now. I really enjoyed this album and you can really hear the conviction in the bands sound, a sign of the things to come from these guys.

Janie Jones - the bass is mixed all the way left. I know older recordings did stuff like this, but it feels really weird and kinda lopsided. I guess I'll see if the whole album is like this

Cool album, I love the Clash but tend to gravitate to their London Calling and later stuff. I also think this album sounds more punk than their later stuff which has a lot of different sounds (but with a punk attitude)

Punk is essentially two things: the message and the energy. You do hear them both here, but I need more than that. Give me more interesting compositions or production or playing, or give me a groove that is impossible to ignore, or give me lyrics and a vocal performance that moves me. I like The Clash and I appreciate the viewpoint and the energy, but this isn't an album I'd ever choose to put on.

Wish i hadn't been as musically myopic as i was in the early 80s. I don't remember punk rock being as musical as i find it to be now. Apologies to my friend Steve who tried to get me into punk rock when i was firmly entrenched in the NWOBHM. Some of it did stick; Dead Kennedys, Black Flag. I need to go back to these classic punk bands and see what i may have missed. I got into the later Clash but this album is a rager.

This how you stamp yourself as being here, loud and pissed off at the state of your country.

During free periods in Sixth Form, I used to listen to The Clash’s debut and My Aim Is True by Elvis Costello as a double bill, because I felt the complimented each other thematically and, more importantly, they clocked in at just over an hour, so I knew when to prepare for my next class. The Pistols professed to be Anarchists, but had a very adolescent sense of politics. They were angry and unemployed and lashing out at everything, which led to some great anti-Monarchy tracks, but nothing too substantial. The Damned were great musically but mostly sang about girls. The Clash straddled the gap, being interesting musicians who were already incorporating elements of Reggae into the Punk sound. They were also angry, but had a more structured Socialist political view. They were angry at the system and were encouraging people to share their anger, to become more politically knowledgeable and active. The Clash would go on to be even more politically and musically complex, but what their Debut has that their other releases do is rawness. It sounds scrappy and unpolished, like all the best Punk records do, but with the political insight of the best of your Marxist mates. It’s great, and fun, and makes you feel righteous and angry and ready to start the revolution. Or at the very least, rail against the inefficiencies of the Greater London Transport System

Ik kan hier goed naar luisteren. Vroeger was dit vast heftige muziek, maar nu voelt het redelijk braaf. Ook qua zang wordt het nergens te extreem en daardoor zijn de 35 minuten zo voorbij. Ik denk niet dat het oorsponkelijk de bedoeling was, want ze waren natuurlijk boos op alles, maar het album straalt plezier uit. Ik kan en hoef hier niet heel veel over te zeggen. Duidelijk 4 sterren.

Yes, this is punk. Fast, simple, dirty. I appreciate the influence punk rock has had to modern musik. This boys brought some really new ideas to the 1970 and sometimes I like it mixed in my daily stream. "London Calling" is one of my favorits. I also like "Should I Stay or Shoul I go". But this album is not on my top list.

This type of punk is fun and lively. Instrumentals are upbeat and simple. I enjoyed it despite putting it on as morning background music for cooking. +1 for leftist ideologies and also for actually being a punk album I enjoy. I guess I don’t hate punk.

It’s The fucking Clash. This is the only punk band that matters. For an inaugural album, this absolutely sets the tone for all of their music that follows and has had a huge impact on the world of music in the 30+ years since.

I have to give it up for the musicianship and the energy. My preference is London Calling but this is still great

A fun collection of punk songs by one of the biggest names in the game. It's quite incredible that this is their debut, as nearly every song is a nugget of perfect songcraft. And they haven't reached their heights yet. In the absence of half-stars, I can't exactly give this four stars, can I?

The debut album of The Clash is not as diverse as their later albums and consists of more than ten punkrock classics and a sublime reggae cover of Police & Thieves.

Pretty good, hard guitar, drums on point. Singer could be better, but it's very enjoyable.

When this album first started I thought we were in for a good score, I really liked the first song Janie Jones. Had I stopped there it probably would have made a 4 star review however the rest of the album wasn't up to much

I don’t dislike it but punk don’t massively do it for me. Quite like Police and Thieves but the rest seems to all blur together as fine.

One sound that is alright, I guess, repeated for an entire album. This kind of punk music seems like something I could be into, bit kinda disappoints me whenever I actually listen to it.

Punk legends. High energy but quite repetitive Love it though

Powerful debut album introducing the core elements of the clash sound which they'd take to the next level over the next few albums. I'm always struck at how accessible clean and poppy this album is for being one of the foundational punk records. Garage rock bands were scuzzier than this, which seems relatively mild compared to like the Stooges. The guitar distortion is distorted but tight and compressed with very controlled playing. The songs have classic blues chord progressions and verse-chorus structures. The bass is fast and loud but melodic like an amped up Jamerson. There's some sneering snarling singing but way more harmonies than screaming and there are some really catchy hooks. Between the vocals guitar leads and bass parts the album is overflowing with melody. 3-4 really standout tracks, the rest is a bit generic but in a genre defining way. Favorites: Remote Control, Police & Thieves, Janie Jones, Deny

I understand this is an important album in the history of punk rock but it just wasn’t my thing. Maybe I just don’t like punk rock enough to appreciate it, but aside from the occasional decent guitar part, there wasn’t much for me to love here.

I never really got into this album much, although I love London Calling. This one isn't nearly as good as that, but it is great. Obviously a very important one too, in the evolution of punk, and much more interesting than the Sex Pistols album that came out in the same year.

Normally not a fan of punk but this hit different. Bri'ish guy shouting over noise.

Police and Thieves is my jam

Honesty is a good policy for this review and it will certainly ruffle feathers, but blame it on mood or the circumstances of the day where this album raged vibes of a discount Rolling Stones brought to you by Wish. Halfway through, the reviewer can reason with themselves that perhaps they were a bit harsh with that, that The Clash is at the very least more than a bargain bin import of British rebellion. Truthfully, this unpatriotic and unprovoked attack on The Clash could be exactly the kind of thing they love not to care about. Heaven knows that this will likely never reach their eyes and ears, and it also knows that it will make no difference.

i've always liked the clash and their music a fair amount and while i didn't know the songs here super well, this album was no exception. solid early punk tunes with a clear message and fast, driving guitars and drums. i think they were still finding their footing here and some of the songs later in the album are a bit dull, but i really liked the first few. police & thieves is a decent cover too. overall, it's good, but it's no london calling. favorites: janie jones, remote control, I'm so bored with the USA, white riot

By the time you get to Hate and War you realise this is not just A N Other one dimensional punk band. What's My Name is a bit Damned like but most sounds original. Lots of exhilarating major key tunes, they always could turn out a timeless melody. Some Jam-like moments. And then Police and Thieves starts to introduce a reggae theme. Pleasant to hear this again after a few decades. The lyrics also still stand the test of time

Listened to this while playing Barcelona solo. First time playing the game...lost by a lot. I enjoyed the first couple songs, but from there it just slowly tapered off for me. Better than some of the other punk albums I've heard on here, but it's still not my favorite of genres.

Passt auch gut zum Sonntagsabends Teekränzchen, wenn eine neue Folge von Traumschiff mit Kapitän Florian Silbereisen aufläuft, dachte ich mir. Ab ca Lied 3 ging mir dann aber die Monotonie und der Stakkatogesang, teilweise im Chor, doch etwas zu nerven. Deny ist möglicherweise der einzige Song, der ansatzweise ein interessantes Riff zu bieten hat?

Lyrically and message wise, they're top notch, but that's where my love-affair ends with The Clash. The vocals/music doesn't do it for me nearly as much as I want, sadly.

As iconic as this band is and how it influenced so many other bands I enjoy, I didn't really enjoy any of these songs, 1*.
