Reviews (page 13 of 13)
Sounds like a punk album
Not a huge fan of punk rock. The album was ok.
Very raw
Okay, but not really my vibe.
Every song sounds the same. If I was a teen-ager when this came out I may have really enjoyed it but it is past my time.
Fortsatt ikkje så glad i punk
This is just underproduced noise, I’m sure a load of clever people will call it “raw”, no thanks
Nope, still don't like them. Better than London Calling, but still too punk-light.
hell nah
A very British punk-rock album with plenty of socialist sentiment. I couldn't really get into this album though, and their voice was just kind of droning.
I feel like this is one of those albums/artists I don’t like much because they were pretty huge and influential, and people built off of what they did and did it better.
Nope, not my vibe.
Meh
Eh
Eh
I think it demands quite a lot from punk to be good, and this just wasn’t enough. Nothing memorable really, just mindless riffing etc.
Bit disappointed by this. Was expecting something aching to "London Calling" or "Combat Rock" but instead found a quite generic punk album. Still some of it quite fun, the opening track "Janie Jones" is a real bop.
Two songs in, not sure I love the vocal mixing -- accentuates his already whiny pitch. I like White Riot. Super crusty mixing; all energy. Deny is another jam. Police & Thieves is the longest song on here by a large margin, and it feels very different. Much more spacious and groovy as opposed to punk blitzkriegs. I enjoy it. 48 Hours is another strong song. This isn't really my cup of tea. There are a few songs that stand out, as mentioned above, but the majority fall into a wall of sound category that doesn't do much for me. I am glad that these guys and their contemporaries existed to pave the way for punk progression, but on pure enjoyment this is a 2 leaning 3 for me.
I can't be the only one who couldn't understand a single word on that album right? I was just thinking that this list has a gone a long time without shoving a punk album in our face and I hope it stays that way. Punk just doesn't do it for me.
Ah it’s been awhile since we’ve gotten some good ol fashioned punk! Not long enough imo.
Punk just doesnt do it for me? The songs blend together
only listened to a couple of songs but it wasn't too bad
London’s calling to say this wasn’t my thing
Cruel of the generator to give me this immediately after The Jam
I guess I should appreciate that this is making me listen to stuff I wouldn't usually listen to, but when I saw the genre was punk rock, I couldn't help being like: "do I have to?!" To be clear, there's nothing wrong with this album. It's not something I would typically voluntarily listen to, and it didn't convert me to a punk either. However, it wasn't all bad. I found it weirdly easy to listen to. I enjoyed the distorted guitar tones and the choruses were usually catchy. The anti-establishment lyrics were both amusingly stereotypical to the genre and somewhat sympathetic. On track 1 I was hit by how universal the themes were, of needing something more- something the establishment isn't providing. I wonder whether these people can see, though, that turning to a rock and roll culture of drugs, sex and violence is a distraction. By buying into it, you're basically just buying into the establishment you think you're rebelling against. Anyway, I thought this album was well done. The lyrics were well written, I can't fault the music from an objective standpoint and overall it was just very sonically and thematically cohesive. I probably wouldn't listen to it again, though. Favourite tracks: White Riot, London's Burning
I’m still not impressed. One great song only.
Not for me
It was okay. Songs sounded pretty similar to one another with that guy's voice
Like it’s okay, maybe I would listen to it by myself but it’s nothing really special…
....I mean, it is good, but if I'm going to play a Punk album, it won't be this one. If I'm going to play a Clash album, it won't be this one.
Due to the fact I could probably write a decent punk album in about 40 minutes, can’t rate this very well.
White riot <3
Meh. Didn't hate it, but didn't overly enjoy it. Big meh.
Going in deaf here. First impression: the album is 35 minutes long. There are 14 tracks and so these are gonna be rapid fire. The songs don’t overstay their welcome if I may write colloquially. White Riot, I had to look up the lyrics as I was having trouble understanding. I thought he was saying “ride the butthole”. These guys are not the Butthole Surfers lol!! Maybe I am ethnocentric. The accents are endearing You can definitely hear the influence that they have had on other punk bands that came decades later. The delivery is crass. Songs are a bit repetitive and missing clever song writing (they follow verse chorus verse chorus/ end mostly) would have liked to hear a bit more variation. One song seemed to have some off-beats to it and reminded me a bit of reggae or ska. I don’t have any strong memories tied to any of this other than making me wish I was listening to Rancid or NOFX. Ready for the next album
I get that The Clash are iconic and all, but I was very bored by this album.
A classic, not my personal taste.
Ellende.
Decent album. Sounds like a British Ramones to me to be honest. Really has a garage band feel in a good way. Could see why they’d take off with London Calling. Didn’t love anything, didn’t hate anything either.
Not for me...
It's alright.
normally like punk quite a bit. But the british accent changes the mood. Can't take a O'Cheerio type of person serious when singing punk. Also, bored of the USA......best get ready for some George Bush style freedom
I didn't find it very memorable even on the second listen.
I'm sure an important album for punk, but this debut album was clearly of a different caliber than London Calling which they put out only two years later.
It wasn’t amazing. Wasn’t memorable. All kind of blended together. 2.5
This was boring. I don't understand punk music like this because the whole albums sounds the same. I don't even know what to say. My favourite song was Remote Control, I guess.
A lot sounded the same
Hefur alltaf þótt The Clash frekar meh.
I understand the spirit of punk, but I hate its sound.
its like the other clash album 2.5
That was very boring.
Not rly our thing. 2/5 angry jefthy’s.
Some pretty catchy tunes sprinkled in, but nothing that made me want to keep listening. Definitely not as good as London Calling.
Debut album by one of the legends of punk rock. And well, as legendary as they are, this record didn't hooked me in even for a little bit. On the first go with it my mind went on autopilot and I had to go back to some of the songs, which by the way, are all very similar to each other. It's not my favourite genre of music and this album definitely didn't do anything to change it. From positives, I really liked the vocal, most of the times Mick James sounded genuinely angry and filled with rage, perfectly fitting their music at the time. Also, I was surprised with few quick, but nicely fitting guitar solos, giving the album a little bit more depth. Otherwise, I found the music a bit generic. Today there is hundreds of bands like The Clash, but I do understand at the time they were very unique and groundbreaking. Unfortunately, in my opinion they do not pass the test of time.
Alright
Not realy my type of music.
Think I did myself a disservice by listening to the band’s later work first - this one seems to lack the maturity and ideation that’s all over ‘London Calling,’ going for quick spastic bursts over the more refined idealism of the later LP. There are some fun tracks on this one, it just pales a little in comparison to what came after it.
I don’t listen to punk like that but It was cool
Meh
A bit too punky, not melodic enough for me
me no likey classic punk :)
Rather than I great punk band, I believe the Clash is, somewhat ironically, a marketing success. They are all flash and image; their music rarely, if ever, living up to their fierce visual presentation.
More melodic than I expected.
MEH
Not my favorite sound. Feels a bit simplistic and bringing the proto to proto-punk.
Clash on Clash. Merkittävä, mut ei mulle iske hirveen lujaa
Best Song: White Riot. The best pure punk song on the album. Worst Song: Cheat. Absolutely sounds as though he's "cheep cheep-ing" like a bird. Overall: At a certain point, we have to admit that The Clash is the AC/DC of punk. All of their songs sound the same. It lacks the conviction and passion of something like Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, or Bad Brains. Just the same bouncy rhythm on every track.
Not exciting in any way. This album just feels like it was made to be average, yet its less than that imo
Xuynya
meh
classic punk protest music that's kinda catchy but a slog to get through. like if Black Flag went happy go lucky semi-ska 2.8/5
Very shouty, typical Clash - not for me - 2/5
Never really got these guys, and this hasn't helped explain how massive or important other people think they are
Just not a fan of the Clash. And if I was going to listen to an album it'd be Combat Rock. I suppose this probably influenced a lot of artists in the 70s but just sounds dated.
personally not an album or a band for me.
i never rate punk much, and for influential as they were, I would just never listen to it
I get it, this is a classic from the front-on punk era, so it was nouveau to be loud, dumb and drunk... and angry about international politics. These guy were talented and prolific in a short span of years before dunking on the rock history and moving on to other things. I just found my sweet spot in their style with Combat Rock - much more genuinely clever and engaging, like they really found their voice.
I like some Clash stuff, but this is not it.
Ok ish
meh
I quite like The Clash, but hadn't previously listened to this, their debut album, in full. A punk album from start to finish, rather than their more genre bending later albums, such as London's Calling. I think I prefer it when they are mixing things up more. The US version, released two years later in 1979 sounds like a more accessible and interesting track listing, but that isn't subject to this review. In smaller doses this is good, but a full album is a bit much for me, even if only 35 mins long. 2.5/5.
go on then name 4 clash songs
As with most punk, this just ends up sounding samey.
Meh.
It was, kinda the same?
Rough. Gritty. 4/10
Not as good as London calling
Just not for me
A bit too angry for me & felt rather dated.
Liked Police & Thieves. Only cause I could understand the words. Most songs were challenging to comprehend the lyrics. Felt like they would just speed up or slow down the beat and give the song a different name. But for punk rock it was okay. Wanted to hear one of my favorites “Should I Stay or Go”. But was bummed it wasn’t on this album.
all the songs sounded the same, and they were all just okay. It was too much whining and too monotone for me.
Ok, but they made better albums
Standard enough punk fare, not my favourite genre.
Definitivamente el punk y yo no encajamos. Voces simples, feroces, melodías y estructuras facilonas.
just not into it
Eh
I like some of The Clash songs very much, but this album was boring.
O London Calling é mais interessante
didn't make it through.
I have tried time and time again to enjoy The Clash and I just cannot. It's just angry tea and crumpets. I never understood the hype and everyone I ever met who enjoyed them was extremely superficial and just liked their album covers on black T-shirts for sale at Spencer's or Hot Topic. I'll gladly accept that Brit-punk is just not for me. Here's your 2/10, now go'on git.
couldnt find
— «The Clash».
The most nothing, white noise, falling asleep ass album of all time. Who cares!
Some really great guitar !! Fav song is ‘Police & Thieves’.
made me want to kms
frustratingly annoying Would I listen again: no please stop Deserves to be on this list: I don't care enough about punk to think it does 1.2
Like 99% of Brits I hate the fucking Clash.
1. jonez - 1 2. remote - 1 3. bored - 1.5 4. riot - 1.5 5. uuar - 1 6. name - 1 7.deny -1 8. Burning - 1 9. Career - 1 10. Cheat - 1 11. Blue- 1 12. Police - 0 13. Hours - 1.5 14. Garage - 1
I hate the clash. There are 2 good songs on this album. Other than that this guy's voice is so grating. I actually don't care for it at all... The clash fucking sucks
nice songs but listening to the album as a whole the songs blur together and really start grating your ear. i found this clash album to be not as varied or balanced as their later ones.
london calling jobda
It's official. I don't like punk rock. This is the fourth punk-ish album generated for me and it's still not for me. Not Prodigy or the Stooges or Sonic Youth could get me interested. May they stay rockin'. I'll just be in the back with my headphones listening to Barry Manilow. HA!
nope
Cute.
Disnt enjoy the guy's voice. Too corny, ans the vibes were overall very meh. Background noise. 1.5/5
I like this album
No, thank you. Hard pass. I wouldn't listen to this even if I didn't already have a headache.
This was just a bunch of bad noise to me
The songs sound all the same to me.
not my typical album
1001 albums and you give us two The Clash albums within a month? No thanks. Tf. I ain’t listenin to this shi
Not my vibe at all
Definitely not my vibe
All the songs sound the same
The clash is lame
Who listens to this and considers it music?
I love a good 70s rock vibe but AGAIN nothing really stood out to me. A lot of the songs sounded the same and I did not save any to Spotify. I honestly would have thought this was just one long 39 minute song. It reminds me of the songs on the ps2 Tony Hawk game, so if that was the vibe they were going for - nailed it. HOLDUP I actually dig the song Police and Thieves, finally it had a different sound than the rest but why is it 6 minutes long bruh wrap it upppp.
Just another 34 minute jam session with them changing their chant every 1-2 minutes. Only bright part was Police and Thieves. Overall repetitive and boring. I’m trying to keep an open mind since punk isn’t really my jam to begin with, but this album offers nothing exciting or new? Every song was the same. At least it was better than Joy Division.
3/10
Don’t seem to enjoy punk much. I love the beliefs and politics, but not the sound.
I really wanted to like this, but only made it to 2 songs...
If you're going to try and make a commentary, at least put it to better music.
The Clash is terrible.
⭐️/5. Derek Shepard’s first red flag was his favorite band being the Clash. Only song I remotely liked was Police & Thieves, and it’s a cover! Near unlistenable.
Don't like the clash
It's punk and sounds the same as all punk, terrible.
This was ok, very of its time. Feels foundational to UK rock/punk. I liked Thieves and Cops
Aikamoista tuubaa, en halua kuulla tätä uudelleen, kiitos.
Not for me
Not for me
Ugh. No thanks.
Not for me. Most of the tunes sound vaguely the same, and don't express unique identity. Except the reggae tune which I was really into anyway. 1 star.
It’s not London Calling.
Annunciation would be lost on them. I get they're doing their own thing and trying to be revolutionary, but each song sounds the same, and the lyrics are all muddled.
The Ass
Did not dig. No cool melodies or noises.
yup sounds like british punk alright
Punk Rock. The Clash. No.
Not for me. 1
Ah. Now I understand where my bad impression of the Clash came from. This is the distillation of everything I don’t like about this kind of punk music - it’s repetitive and boring, whiny and short-sighted. Grow up. 2/10
Maybe not my type of music... I was bored while listening to it... I only liked 3 songs...
1/5
Not for me at all.
Truly, I was ready for this to be an amazing piece of work, which launched a whole genre. It fell far short of that. Maybe my expectations were just too high, but I really didn't like it.
DNF
not my type
Nicht meine Richtung
Didn’t get it then, don’t get it now. Amateur singing, amateur musicianship…. Okay whatever…
Ghastly.
As expected, I didn't like it.
Trashiger Punk Rock.
bleh
Could it be... Punk? Yes it is. I don't like it. 2/10
好
Yuck, just noise!
ekki fyrir mig ...
I don't think I'll ever like the Clash. Every song from them that I listen to just meshes together. I'm sure London Calling is on this list, and maybe that will end up speaking to me more, but as we are I've yet to find a Clash song I want to return to.
This album nothing for me. Favourite track: Career Opportunities.
Geschrei
Not for me
Nichts für mich ...
I expected this to be good. It is not.
Not a fan. Attended a Who concert in 1982. The Clash was the opening act. Fans were not pleased and flipped them off most of the show.
100% nope
loud un-violent tho is white riot sarcastic or not? idk what it's about awesome guitars overall pretty good turns out white riot isn't racist so i'm good
Ermm yawp it sure is rock
This album definitely clashed with my music taste. Sounds like a bad garage band this is on par with some of the rap albums .25/5
As iconic as this band is and how it influenced so many other bands I enjoy, I didn't really enjoy any of these songs, 1*.
i don’t want to get around this. not an album for someone with a sore head. The mix is interesting though - very wide with the placement of instruments. And panning between vocals. Maybe a bit too much, i’d be interested to listen to it on speakers rather than headphones. Too much hi freq
Just couldn’t stand it. Maybe this means I’ an old man. But found this album super annoying.
Noisy shite rock
Punk
Tone deaf singing. Instrumentals sound like they were written for children’s music. Amateur song writing
IT WAS SOO BAD I DONT WANT TO LISTEN TO WHITE GUYS WHINING ANYMORE
Genuinely struggled to listen to this. Just not my cup of tea.
Dont care for punk.
Genres: Punk rock Formed: London, England in 1976 Run time: 14 songs, 35 min, 20 sec I’m not in the slightest bit impressed with this album. Joe Strummer whinging about work, the country etc. Given his education in a boarding school, perhaps if he’d applied himself a little more he could have found himself in a position to change things instead of moaning about it. Track 4, “White Riot” was OK, everything else was uninspiring. The least played tracks have over 2M plays and three tracks have around 20M plays each. I can only assume it’s the “Emperor's New Clothes” syndrome: because someone said it’s amazing, everyone says it’s amazing. It isn’t! They went on to write some really great songs (“Should I Stay or Should I Go”, “London Calling”, Rock the Casbah”, etc.) but not on this album. No, I won't be listening again. My Rating: *
Boring. Made it through 3 songs before I couldn't take it anymore
I found it to be mostly annoying, chanty, mumble classic rock.
Never liked The Clash!
not my favorite, couldn’t get through it
No………just no
Utter garbage, disliked it immensely.
put me in an instant bad mood
Not my bag
Yea, sry that's a 1 from me
I listened to about the first minute of each of the first three songs and then a few seconds of the fourth before deciding that nope, I don't have to do this to myself. It's just some more stupid old punk rock and I hate it just as much as all of the other punk so far, if not more so. Actually more so. It seems to be a particularly punkish punk album. Bleh.
Typical crap created by a typical crap band
Not good.
The youtube full album skipped Police and Thieves. I was thinking this had a weak ending, but when you skip the best track on the 2nd side, that'll do that. Still, the back side isn't as strong as the front.
Ist OK
Pretty alright. Had honestly never heard of Janis Joplin before. Dunno if I'd listen again, but I didn't dislike it.
I know it's a classic and part of music history, but the sound is a bit too atonal (vocals) for me. Appreciate it for inspiring a new generation though!
