Punky album. But not really my jam.
this felt far too generic to interest me. i even came up with a clash song formula halfway through the album. pick a word or two. repeat that word. make your band members repeat that word. throw in a few lines in between repeating the word. repeat it some more. anyway at least it was only 35 minutes.

This was a good Thursday afternoon album as I prepare to go see Kneecap all the way in Pomona. I'm not the world's biggest clash fan although I love Charlie Don't Surf and a few other hits. The clash are what they are and I'm happy about that I just never went through a deep dive. Don't have many prominent memories nor associations with them. I liked the "what's my naaaame naaaAAme Naaame NaaaaAAme"
Hmm okay a Clash album I have never listened to before (I don't think). I wonder if the other two Clash albums I have heard before are also on this list. After this album I will be 0.002% on my way to being okay to die. Can't die yet! I have upwards of 999 albums left to hear! The Clash are one of those bands that I don't think I've ever fully grasped. I can see why they're popular, but I don't think it's for me. Super popular pervasive beloved punk music is actually not very "punk" to me. Give me some punk that sounds like shit that everyone hates, that's how to be truly punk! The Clash are really just the Green Day of the late 70's / early 80's. SONG RANKING: Police & Thieves > White Riot > Garageland > Career Opportunities > Janie Jones > Cheat > Protex Blue > 48 Hours > London's Burning > Hate & War > Bored with USA > Remote Control > What's My Name > Deny Police & Thieves (a cover) is really good, but no song on this 1977 album is better than Clash City Rockers which I guess they release as a single in 1978. Too many songs on this album are not Police & Thieves or Clash City Rockers.

I've never been a huge fan of the Clash outside of the hits. It's just okay for me. Mid 2s.
My first impression was these little fuggly British boys are lowkey annoying 😭 their voice just grating and the “punk” just kinda corny. They get points for being funny talkin bout Parliament like “they’re just old and fat” LOL. I really just am not feeling this one.

Overrated but "classic"... Police and Thieves is a good cover but I'd rather the original.
The songs start to blend into each other but have plenty of individual highlights and grooves.
It was fine. Not my thing. It was funny how they kept telling me how to feel about the government and those in power. It wasn't even subtle or poetic. I guess that's rock though. Punk rock? Punk music...maybe?? Idk I'm unfamiliar

I just wanted there to be a song called The Clash to triple up the name. Eh this music is fine. I took a class on Punk Rock in college and I just never really enjoyed the music
Song were very samey would like to see variation in the songs. Otherwise vocals sounded good and complimented the music well

Punk is cool. It gets you amped up like it should. An album’s worth of punk? It just doesn’t do it for me. It’s supposed to be short, punchy, to the point. This album is just too long to be that. Police and Thieves is a badass track. Garageland is sick. But those are probably the least punk songs on the album. Maybe I’m just not a punk guy…
Classic Punk Rock. Some Songs are good, other not so
Same as their album London Calling. It doesn't really land for me, or ring true. London Calling is a step above. I'm just not into early punk.
I'm not a big Clash fan, but I like London Calling, but had never heard this album before. I was kinda bummed, because I didn't really like it. I guess it was a little too punk for me. This ones 100% subjective, though. I can totally see how people could like it... just not me.

Heard worse
it started off good, sometimes i though each song sounded a bit too similar, but it didn’t feel too jarring, and i enjoyed the consistency. but everything fell apart for me at track 7, deny, when i got it in my head that the lead vocalist, mr the clash, almost certainly had a speech impediment or at least has an obscenely wet mouth. from then on i couldn’t focus on anything but him pronouncing his th’s as ss and his s’s as th’s!! “deny, your thuch liar”. its so strange because it only seems to happen in the chorus of each song too, the first verses of protox blues and police & thieves sound great but as soon as the chorus hits all i can hear is how much saliva he has in his mouth. it just sounds like each time he takes a breath he’s actually taking a very small bite out of a sandwich and then continuing to sing. as someone who deeply hates mouth noises and eating asmr this is genuinely a form of torture. alas the guitarist is very talented and i can appreciate its sorta “we are playing this in a garage and the neighbours HATE us” vibes the whole album has really genuinely wish i hadn’t noticed it and could just enjoy without focusing on it, i’m aware how nit-picky and crazy i must look. i also adore any singer who just sounds ridiculously british, i also think every song is exactly the length it should be, it feels like they’d all work pretty good as an intermission between any two songs. also “don’t use the rules . they’re not for you they’re for the fools . and your a fool if you don’t know that . so use the rules you stupid fool” made me burst out laughing and i don’t really know why, he just really wants to let us know we are a fool.

I know it's a culturally relevant album, but I could never get into it. It was difficult for me to sit and listen to it in its entirety. Joe Strummer's voice is awful...he just yells with no variation in tone through every song. All the songs sound the same to me. If you want to listen to the Clash, Combat Rock is the way to go...much more evolved in style and vocals.
"The Clash" is OK, it's very same-y from track to track, but it doesn't overstay it's welcome. Favorite track: "Cheat"

The Clash - The Clash A decent punk rock album that, while not being as great as the albums that would be made later on, still had a fresh and rebellious sound to it, which was really great to hear, very consistent and catchy, it's really a fun album to listen! not for me
For the track What's My Name, a YouTube comment says "I like to imagine taking out the hymnals and singing this song in church. Makes me laugh." This kind of puerile, knee-jerk anti-authoritarianism attitude is what I was expecting from this album and it's what I got. Simplistic, but the world needs this kind of thing, and I like the cut of their jib, if not their music. They do sound very amateur, like your schoolfriend's first band practicing in his garage.
You can see how they defined the genre of punk... but also solidified punk is not for me.
I appreciate the historical significance of this band, but I don't really enjoy listening to it. The music is well done, if simple. The vocals just don't do it for me. If you like punk a whole lot you might enjoy this more than me.
The way the lead singer enunciates his words just makes me laugh, he's so pissed off but also sounds drunk? he slurs a lot of words but really goes for them
It was ok, didn't partucularly like this one.
I love The Clash, though I think they reached their creative peak in later albums such as London Calling, Sandinista and Combat Rock, so I didn’t spend as much time with this one in the past. This is a good punk album. Rough and gritty yet melodic and catchy. Anthemic yet relatable. It got some very strong songs like What’s My Name and 48 Hours. On Police & Thieves we get hints of their future musical tendencies to involve ska into their sound. Thing is I don’t it stands up to the rest of their catalog, and if this album was the only thing The Clash ever released… then they wouldn’t be The Clash. I don’t think it belongs on this list and as much as it pains me I can’t give it more than two stars.

Yeah it’s definitely an early punk rock album. It was a groundbreaking piece of counter-culture at the time. Through modern lens I’d call it mostly a snoozefest, honestly. Musically it’s pretty lazy, but it’s hard to fault a punk rock record for powerchords and simple drum beats. I honestly don’t have a lot to say about this record, I’m a fan of a lot of punk rock bands, but The Clash just ain’t for me. 2*. Could be worse.

Not bad, but nothing I feel particularly blown away by. But I'm not a big fan of punk to begin with, so that fact that I found this inoffensive means it's probably pretty good to a more neutral listener. Concise without being grating or shrieky. Top tracks: Janie Jones, London's Burning

honestly I was pretty excited to get The Clash because I was so ready for a classic british rock band but I hate to say I was disappointed. I can’t totally pin point what about it I didn’t love, I think it was to like twingey for me if you hat makes sense. I felt like it didn’t mesh well or something? I don’t know what exactly the issue was but something didn’t click for me.
Not a punk listener, and, I haven't listened to any Clash. Totally fresh perspective. Meh. Not my thing, very forgettable. Maybe listening on a Sunday night at 8pm didn’t set the right tone but I have no desire to revisit.
The angst is lost on me. I appreciate it, though.

I get that this was super influential, but its just not for me.
The Clash might be my favorite punk rock band. But I hate punk rock, so that makes them my 10,000th or so favorite band overall, behind basically all bands in all genres I don’t hate, except Radiohead. Even a punk rock band can be better than Radiohead. But most punk rock bands aren’t even good enough to be better than Radiohead, and that is really saying something, cause Radiohead sucks. Punk rockers are the ultimate posers. It’s all an act. Punk rock is the least authentic genre of music ever. It was invented by a clothing store owner to sell T-shirts to scene kids (https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/music/1420480/Sex-Pistols-manager-Malcolm-McLaren-punk-rock-johnny-rotten-evg/amp). Even the cheesiest musicians generally care about music. But not punk rockers. They only care about looking cool and drinking or shooting heroin and being angry at whatever they are angry at. And most of them are too dumb to even articulate what it is they are angry at. Pop garbage is made by people who only care about making money and being famous instead of music and punk rock is made by people who only care about looking cool and drinking or shooting heroin and being angry instead of music. The entire genre is a put-on that only the truly, deeply stupid fall for. All that being said, the Clash are okay.
Could be good if you're in the mood for it, but won't put you in a good mood by itself. Bored with the USA is good
It’s just a fact of life. No matter how much I listen to The Clash, they will always make feel a bit depressed. I just find the delivery soul destroying, terrible singers, bang average guitars and terrible production. However, they actually have decent lyrics and something to say, which is more than most punks bands. Which all in all it does just generally evoke the relatively depressing times of the late 70s in the UK. I prefer music to make me smile, so for me, this just makes me want to stop listening to it. It should be a 1*, but I’ll give it an extra mark for them actually having something positive to say.

The Clash are like a worse version of Ramones. Every song sounds the same, but the song isn't quite as good as the Ramones. Overall just kinda mediocre and forgettable. I'm just not a big fan.

I was never that fussed about The Clash. Sure, not as shite as The Sex Pistols but no way near as talented or interesting as The Jam, The Police or Elvis Costello.

I like "London Calling" more but there are some quintessential punk songs like 'Police and Thieves' on this album.
I just find early punk to be so repetitive and boring. It’s not awful if this is your thing, but 30 one minute songs that all sound like they are slightly different arrangements of the same song just isn’t my thing.

I was surprised how little of the signature sound and attitude from The Clash is on this. I didn't realize how relatively tame the early punk scene was. I'm sure it was iconic upon release for reasons I don't know but not sure what stands out about this album. It's an OK listen to nowadays but nothing I need to revisit. Pretty forgettable for the most part. Not what I expected. Felt way longer than 35 mins for some reason. 2.05 stars

Blimey these guys didn’t start out all that great?! The groundwork for their future success and best stuff is there, but this definitely doesn’t really have the magic of their classics. Similarly to with Sonic Youth, I didn’t find myself convinced by the vocals, and the instrumentals to match felt a bit weaker, hence the lower rating. I am also wanting to hear some punk on this list that feels more angry and passionate!! With Zack De La Rocha of Rage Against The Machine, for example, you can really feel his burning frustration through his voice! I want that!

The Clash’s The Clash is a loud mess. I was extremely disappointed by this album, as the band was proclaimed to be exceptional, this album genre-defining. To be fair, I shouldn’t have expected much when that genre is punk. While it’s not terrible, no song provides any value. Some are better than others, but they are all better left unheard of. Maybe one of their newer albums will fare better. All in all, The Clash is a bad album. Best Song: London's Burning Worst Song: Protex Blue

Ultimately this album just didn't do it for me. I'm a fan of punk and recognize that the Clash are a major part of popularllizing the genre but they have better albums than this. None of the songs stood out as genre defining and much of it melted together sound wise. I will continue listening to The Clash but probably not this album.

I didn't get on board with The Clash until "Combat Rock". I've never gone back to explore there other albums. Not sure why, just stuck with the hits. This one was OK. Nothing to exciting for me.

At least this band would go on to make some actual great music. Rough but a good listen
It's punk — nothing more than that! I like The Clash but had never heard this before. And I was a bit disappointed of how bland it was. Looking back, punk didn't really bring too much to music apart from some catchy tunes and an annoying mentality among youth (yes, I do prefer prog, yacht rock and disco). This just sounds like The Ramones, just more drunk.

I’ve never understood the hype around The Clash. I’ve never found them very “punk”. The opening track “Janie Jones” I really liked. Listened to the whole thing. I still don’t get the hype. They have the look and imagery, but nothing in the music spoke to me at all.
Sure may have been revolutionary at the time, but ngl now just annoying. Was quite happy for the album to end

Ca n’a pas la rage des Sex Pistols, les mélodies des Undertones, nan décidément je passe surement à côté mais je n’aime pas les Clash. Je trouve ça étonnamment fadasse et monotone. La musique, le chant, rien de vraiment bien excitant. “Janie Jones” en ouverture est sympa, comme “I'm so bored with the USA” mais ils me perdent très vite.
I like London Calling for sentimental reasons but the rest of the album is too punk and I don't like the voice.

Yes, this is punk. Fast, simple, dirty. I appreciate the influence punk rock has had to modern musik. This boys brought some really new ideas to the 1970 and sometimes I like it mixed in my daily stream. "London Calling" is one of my favorits. I also like "Should I Stay or Shoul I go". But this album is not on my top list.

Yuck. These guys are to blame for all the boring bland corporate American punk bands. Joe Strummer's Mockney accent is a joke and isn't White Riot just a bit racist? Can't be doing with it.

When this album first started I thought we were in for a good score, I really liked the first song Janie Jones. Had I stopped there it probably would have made a 4 star review however the rest of the album wasn't up to much

I understand this is an important album in the history of punk rock but it just wasn’t my thing. Maybe I just don’t like punk rock enough to appreciate it, but aside from the occasional decent guitar part, there wasn’t much for me to love here.

Whatever i Don't like rock
Anfangs fragte ich mich, wie das jemals rebellisch sein konnte. Passt auch gut zum Sonntagsabends Teekränzchen, wenn eine neue Folge von Traumschiff mit Kapitän Florian Silbereisen aufläuft, dachte ich mir. Ab ca Lied 3 ging mir dann aber die Monotonie und der Stakkatogesang, teilweise im Chor, doch etwas zu nerven. Deny ist möglicherweise der einzige Song, der ansatzweise ein interessantes Riff zu bieten hat?
2/5 no ciekawy vibe, oryginalny miks chujowy i nikt nie remasteruje, wokalista głos ma fajny ale wgl nie wyraźny, spiewa jakby nie mógł. 3 akordy ale bez darcia mordy, każda piosenka to świat wg kiepskich i makumba, punkowe gówno. Prog rock lepszy

It's like the British decided to make a surfer album and the rest of th eworld were like "uhh no that's not it". So, to save face they labeled it a new cool genre "Punk Rock" They get 2 stars for being so inspirational to other bands and projects after them. And in that sense, they are like the Beatles for me. I do not like them, but i can respect that people have and even still do.

- im bored of the usa and white riot were all right - the rest largely samey and boring, some glimmer of something new in the police and thieves one but not very much - gets better when you're reading the lyrics cause for the life of me i cannot understand punk vocals - idk not really for me but I liked two songs off it so 2.5/5

A very British punk-rock album with plenty of socialist sentiment. I couldn't really get into this album though, and their voice was just kind of droning.
I feel like this is one of those albums/artists I don’t like much because they were pretty huge and influential, and people built off of what they did and did it better.

I think it demands quite a lot from punk to be good, and this just wasn’t enough. Nothing memorable really, just mindless riffing etc.
Bit disappointed by this. Was expecting something aching to "London Calling" or "Combat Rock" but instead found a quite generic punk album. Still some of it quite fun, the opening track "Janie Jones" is a real bop.
Two songs in, not sure I love the vocal mixing -- accentuates his already whiny pitch. I like White Riot. Super crusty mixing; all energy. Deny is another jam. Police & Thieves is the longest song on here by a large margin, and it feels very different. Much more spacious and groovy as opposed to punk blitzkriegs. I enjoy it. 48 Hours is another strong song. This isn't really my cup of tea. There are a few songs that stand out, as mentioned above, but the majority fall into a wall of sound category that doesn't do much for me. I am glad that these guys and their contemporaries existed to pave the way for punk progression, but on pure enjoyment this is a 2 leaning 3 for me.
I can't be the only one who couldn't understand a single word on that album right? I was just thinking that this list has a gone a long time without shoving a punk album in our face and I hope it stays that way. Punk just doesn't do it for me.

I guess I should appreciate that this is making me listen to stuff I wouldn't usually listen to, but when I saw the genre was punk rock, I couldn't help being like: "do I have to?!" To be clear, there's nothing wrong with this album. It's not something I would typically voluntarily listen to, and it didn't convert me to a punk either. However, it wasn't all bad. I found it weirdly easy to listen to. I enjoyed the distorted guitar tones and the choruses were usually catchy. The anti-establishment lyrics were both amusingly stereotypical to the genre and somewhat sympathetic. On track 1 I was hit by how universal the themes were, of needing something more- something the establishment isn't providing. I wonder whether these people can see, though, that turning to a rock and roll culture of drugs, sex and violence is a distraction. By buying into it, you're basically just buying into the establishment you think you're rebelling against. Anyway, I thought this album was well done. The lyrics were well written, I can't fault the music from an objective standpoint and overall it was just very sonically and thematically cohesive. I probably wouldn't listen to it again, though. Due to the fact I could probably write a decent punk album in about 40 minutes, can’t rate this very well.

Meh. Didn't hate it, but didn't overly enjoy it. Big meh.
Going in deaf here. First impression: the album is 35 minutes long. There are 14 tracks and so these are gonna be rapid fire. The songs don’t overstay their welcome if I may write colloquially. White Riot, I had to look up the lyrics as I was having trouble understanding. I thought he was saying “ride the butthole”. These guys are not the Butthole Surfers lol!! Maybe I am ethnocentric. The accents are endearing You can definitely hear the influence that they have had on other punk bands that came decades later. The delivery is crass. Songs are a bit repetitive and missing clever song writing (they follow verse chorus verse chorus/ end mostly) would have liked to hear a bit more variation. One song seemed to have some off-beats to it and reminded me a bit of reggae or ska. I don’t have any strong memories tied to any of this other than making me wish I was listening to Rancid or NOFX. Ready for the next album
I get that The Clash are iconic and all, but I was very bored by this album.

Decent album. Sounds like a British Ramones to me to be honest. Really has a garage band feel in a good way. Could see why they’d take off with London Calling. Didn’t love anything, didn’t hate anything either.

normally like punk quite a bit. But the british accent changes the mood. Can't take a O'Cheerio type of person serious when singing punk. Also, bored of the USA......best get ready for some George Bush style freedom
I didn't find it very memorable even on the second listen.
I'm sure an important album for punk, but this debut album was clearly of a different caliber than London Calling which they put out only two years later.

This was boring. I don't understand punk music like this because the whole albums sounds the same. I don't even know what to say. My favourite song was Remote Control, I guess.

Some pretty catchy tunes sprinkled in, but nothing that made me want to keep listening. Definitely not as good as London Calling.
Debut album by one of the legends of punk rock. And well, as legendary as they are, this record didn't hooked me in even for a little bit. On the first go with it my mind went on autopilot and I had to go back to some of the songs, which by the way, are all very similar to each other. It's not my favourite genre of music and this album definitely didn't do anything to change it. From positives, I really liked the vocal, most of the times Mick James sounded genuinely angry and filled with rage, perfectly fitting their music at the time. Also, I was surprised with few quick, but nicely fitting guitar solos, giving the album a little bit more depth. Otherwise, I found the music a bit generic. Today there is hundreds of bands like The Clash, but I do understand at the time they were very unique and groundbreaking. Unfortunately, in my opinion they do not pass the test of time.

Not realy my type of music.
Think I did myself a disservice by listening to the band’s later work first - this one seems to lack the maturity and ideation that’s all over ‘London Calling,’ going for quick spastic bursts over the more refined idealism of the later LP. There are some fun tracks on this one, it just pales a little in comparison to what came after it.

Rather than I great punk band, I believe the Clash is, somewhat ironically, a marketing success. They are all flash and image; their music rarely, if ever, living up to their fierce visual presentation.

Best Song: White Riot. The best pure punk song on the album. Worst Song: Cheat. Absolutely sounds as though he's "cheep cheep-ing" like a bird. Overall: At a certain point, we have to admit that The Clash is the AC/DC of punk. All of their songs sound the same. It lacks the conviction and passion of something like Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, or Bad Brains. Just the same bouncy rhythm on every track.

Just not a fan of the Clash. And if I was going to listen to an album it'd be Combat Rock. I suppose this probably influenced a lot of artists in the 70s but just sounds dated.

i never rate punk much, and for influential as they were, I would just never listen to it
I get it, this is a classic from the front-on punk era, so it was nouveau to be loud, dumb and drunk... and angry about international politics. These guy were talented and prolific in a short span of years before dunking on the rock history and moving on to other things. I just found my sweet spot in their style with Combat Rock - much more genuinely clever and engaging, like they really found their voice.
Muss ich nicht verstehen, ein paar Drumgrooves sind ganz cool und sie können Hooks, berührt mich aber nicht so wahnsinnig.

I quite like The Clash, but hadn't previously listened to this, their debut album, in full. A punk album from start to finish, rather than their more genre bending later albums, such as London's Calling. I think I prefer it when they are mixing things up more. The US version, released two years later in 1979 sounds like a more accessible and interesting track listing, but that isn't subject to this review. In smaller doses this is good, but a full album is a bit much for me, even if only 35 mins long. 2.5/5.

In conclusione: Allora qua mi trovo davanti ad un paradosso. Che voto dai ad un album punk che t'è piaciuto? Se gli dai 5 è chiaramente un insulto diretto ai Clash, se gli dai 1 però sembra comunque ingiusto. Non lo so forse andrò con un 2 simbolico. In ogni caso odiavo il punk quando avevo 16/17 anni e penso che il punk fosse fatto proprio per essere odiato dai vari me diciasettenni. Oggi mi fa riflettere sul valore del rifiuto dei canoni estetici come segno di protesta. Penso che spesso nell'arte la cosa assuma due forme, la prima è quella pretenziosa di trascendere i canoni estetici, che per me risulta mediamente in delle perversioni artistiche che nessuno pseudo intellettuale ha il coraggio di dire che sono cagate. La seconda è quella invece genuina di ribellarsi ai canoni estetici, introdurre il caos rimescolando le carte in tavola, facendo scandalizzare le vecchiette metaforiche del campo artistico che gridano che certe cose sono brutte e che questa non è musica. Io penso che stimolare l'emozione dell'indignazione e dello scandalo probabilmente sia un dovere civile. Penso che i Clash alla fine abbiano fatto esattamente questo nel 77 insieme ai loro compari e quindi li apprezzo, non posso dire che li apprezzi troppo nell'ascolto ma penso che questo sia un complimento.

A bit too angry for me & felt rather dated.
Liked Police & Thieves. Only cause I could understand the words. Most songs were challenging to comprehend the lyrics. Felt like they would just speed up or slow down the beat and give the song a different name. But for punk rock it was okay. Wanted to hear one of my favorites “Should I Stay or Go”. But was bummed it wasn’t on this album.

Definitivamente el punk y yo no encajamos. Voces simples, feroces, melodías y estructuras facilonas. Por ahí algún pequeño destello instrumental, algún juego de guitarras interesante, más allá de los 3 acordes de la canción. U2 debió escuchar Deny más de una vez.

O London Calling é mais interessante
Every generation needs to find music that differentiates it from (and usually offends) the previous generation. Boomers did it with Rock of all sorts (...and Roll, Hard, Prog and Metal), Gen X with Punk. Millennials? Probably Hip-hop, before settling on Rap. I thought this might be good Punk, but at the end of the day it's just shouty rebellion, wanting to offend and break down the old without having any credible new substitutes.

I have tried time and time again to enjoy The Clash and I just cannot. It's just angry tea and crumpets. I never understood the hype and everyone I ever met who enjoyed them was extremely superficial and just liked their album covers on black T-shirts for sale at Spencer's or Hot Topic. I'll gladly accept that Brit-punk is just not for me. Here's your 2/10, now go'on git.

I hate the clash. There are 2 good songs on this album. Other than that this guy's voice is so grating. I actually don't care for it at all... The clash fucking sucks
nice songs but listening to the album as a whole the songs blur together and really start grating your ear. i found this clash album to be not as varied or balanced as their later ones.

It's official. I don't like punk rock. This is the fourth punk-ish album generated for me and it's still not for me. Not Prodigy or the Stooges or Sonic Youth could get me interested. May they stay rockin'. I'll just be in the back with my headphones listening to Barry Manilow. HA!
