Songs For Swingin' Lovers!

Excellent album. It came out when my Dad was still young. It makes me think of my grandparents hanging out with some friends and playing some Sinatra on their record player. Happy Vibes.

It's old blue eyes. A shitty, shitty man, but a great singer.

It's fine. I can't really get excited about Frank Sinatra, but it has a time and a place.

I'm not a massive Sinatra/swing fan, but Anything Goes is always a good time whether it's sung in English or Mandarin.

It's hard to separate the music from the image (and admittedly hard to get Joe Piscopo's and Phil Hartman's Frank Sinatra characitures out of my head whenever I hear Frank sing, as well as the Johnny Fontane character in the Godfather movies), so I really tried to clear my mind of all the cultural stuff and just listen. I still like the music -- that era's swing-jazz-pop music is a lot of fun -- although I found from listening to it again, really focusing on the music, without all the Sinatra image stuff in it, it's just okay. There are artists from that era I like better. It doesn't really matter because there's no satisfying answer to the artist v. art question, but I'm glad I pushed myself to listen to it that way. Given this album and artist's massive appeal and popularity, makes sense it's on this list.

Ol‘ Blue Eyes. Einer der größten Sänger. Auf einer rundweg mittelmäßigen Platte. I’ve Got You Under My Skin hatte ich irgendwie besser in Erinnerung.

I thought Greatest Hits albums weren't part of the deal for this collection of albums? That is what this kind of is, isn't it? Don't get me wrong, it's great music, and I enjoyed it.

Dentro de todo un buen disco, claramente cuando escuchaste la mitad un poco te cansas, porque medio que es siempre swing, pero te tira un par de canciones buenas. No conocía pero me gusto: "You're getting to be a habit with me"

Man, this album is just classic. I miss the days when 3-minute songs were the norm. Hit 'em hard and leave 'em wanting more seems to be the Sinatra formula and damn if it doesn't work. Just super enjoyable.

Mmmmhmmmm. Franks velvet-y pipes always put people at ease and help set the mood. I'd imagine this is the preferred soundtrack when attending those suburban beef and pole hopping swinger parties.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume that "swingin' lovers" didn't mean the same thing in 1956 as it does now. Classic Sinatra though.

While Frank is not my go-to crooner (I'm a Mel Torme fan), there's no denying the power of ol' Blue Eyes. This collection of songs of the great American songbook is a master class in performance by one of the best ever. Sometimes Frank's phrasing bugs me, but other times the story he tells in his timbre and range can't be beat. His backing orchestra under the masterful baton of Nelson Riddle does seriously swing, bringing the whole package to the highest level.

This album would be fine as background music, but there isn’t anything ground breaking here. I did learn that Sinatra was 13.5 lb at birth! 13.5 lb and no c-section!!! He was an only child…I wonder why. They had to use forceps to get him out, which left permanent scars on his neck and eardrum damage. I’d say God bless his mother, but unfortunately she physically abused him as a youngster. Was it pay back for his uncomfortable world entrance?

As 'swingin' Sinatra goes, versus 'moody' Sinatra (which I prefer), this record is fine, but it also highlights the fact that the various collections of his songs are better curated than the albums

Knows what it does and does it well, a fun album. Can't help but feel like I'm listening to the same song over and over, though - concept makes sense but it gets repetitive. He's by far my favorite singer from the era (no racist). He just puts me in a different state of mind. With regards to this album, it mostly hits the same beats over and over. 3.5 that I'll round down to a 3. The big two hits from this album are can't miss all-timers though.

Ho ascoltato Frank subito dopo aver ascoltato i Flaming Lips ed è stata un esperienza surreale. Non lo so, è un album di un'altra generazione e come è stato detto in circostanze simili è difficile da valutare proprio per questo motivo. Non critico la performance perché come al solito, sia Sinatra che i musicisti sono bravissimi, ma mi sono davvero annoiato. A pelle sarebbe un 2.5 per la noia mortale. Ma in casi come questo preferisco dare un 3 honoris causa, perché sento come se fosse un problema mio non dell'album.

A me il vecchio Frank è sempre stato simpatico e dopo Evangelion riconosco anche la vena bittersweet nei suoi pezzi. Purtroppo st'album è veramente sciapo, il target era chiaramente quello che era e alla fine, sì dai lo dico, era un po' il dico trap dei suoi tempi. Quantomeno questi dischi rendono evidente che puoi prendere musicisti bravi quanto ti pare ma quando manca il contenuto difficilmente il risultato cambia in modo sostanziale. Diciamo un 2.5 scarso.

Mysigt 50-talssound som bara puttrar på utan att någon gång utmana eller bli särskilt intressant. Efter några låtar börjar jag undra hur många gånger en man kan beskriva sin kärlek till en(?) kvinna och jämföra henne med månen och havet. Svaret är, åtminstone tillräckligt många gånger för att Frank Sinatra ska kunna fylla ut 59 studioalbum och 297 singlar under sin karriär. Rösten är fin, det är det inget snack om. Men, TÄNK om man 1956 kunde veta vad som gömde sig i musikvärlden på andra sidan decenniet, och hur tråkig Sinatra skulle bli i jämförelse med 60-talets musik. Bästa låt: Ingen som stack ut, allt flöt ihop. Kände inte heller någon större lust att lyssna igen för att hitta någon Bästa låt. Sådeså.

Classic and timeless. There’s a reason almost everyone like Sinatra. Listening to this makes me feel like I’m in New York City.

What can you say about this one? Classic Sinatra. All great songs. Missing a couple of my favorite Sinatra songs (like Luck Be a Lady), but they're all exactly what you'd expect on a Sinatra album.

I mean, it's Frank Sinatra. It does what it says on the tin. There's crooning, big band blasts, and hip cat lingo.

Confession: I do not like Sinatra’s voice. The sliding into every note thing. Other than that, this is basically bubblegum pop. I actually like it; that’s not a dig. Unless you’re the kind of person for whom all music has to be super serious, in which case I don’t think that this is it, just ‘cause it’s old. Fun, but that’s it. Favourite track: “Old Devil Moon”

Cá nos deparamos novamente com o senhor Frank Sinatra. Tenho muitas ideias na cabeça após este álbum e nenhuma delas particularmente coesas, vamos lá a isto então. Um dos pensamentos que passa na minha cabeça é o seguinte: “Será isto cultural?”. Pois eu não entendo, isto parece uma coisa muito americanizada que pouco percebo. Parece que estou a jogar Fallout e isto é a música que isto passa na rádio do jogo. O Sinatra pode até ter uma boa voz, mas quando todas as músicas parecem iguais e soam ao mesmo torna-se enfadonho, para além das letras simplistas. Não sei se sou eu o problema, mas não consigo compreender este álbum, o fenómeno consigo compreender. A semelhança do álbum anterior tenho de dizer o seguinte o álbum terminou, vi que ainda vermelho e pensei que fosse o mesmo e não era. Assim, não consigo destacar nenhuma música do álbum, só uma e foi porque não gostei nada dela, dai surgir na memoria. Acho esta lista extremamente enviesada para um público anglo-saxonico, não levando em consideração outras culturas, assim sendo incorpora coisas muito próximas ao povo estado-unidense e não ao resto do mundo, como julgo ser o caso do Sinatra. Destaco pela negativa a It Happened in Monterey e dou uma nota de 4 pela frustração e não devido a falta de talento. Nota: 4/10 Data: 15/01/2025

Surprised by how many of these songs I recognized. Shows how important this album is culturally. Enjoyed it more than I thought, would be nice to have on in the background when trying to feel fancy. Also enjoyed the different turns of phrase that existed 70 years ago

Big horns, jazzy vibes, Frank’s silky smooth voice! What’s not to love? The answer comes easily for me: big horns, jazzy vibe and Frank. Never been a fan, and I was unable to listen to even one complete track on this album. Is this the third album given to me on Hell Island? (Other two artists from the list so far were PereUbu and Laura Nyro) Maybe, but I’m still giving it a very generous two stars out of respect/fear for the reputation of Ol’ Blue Eyes.

El balance entre lo grave y lo agudo, la cantidad perfecta de volumen y la aparente falta de esfuerzo para cantar no me dejan más que disfrutar siempre la voz de Sinatra. Gran instrumentación y supongo que buenas letras (porque, como de costumbre, no le puse atención a las letras), el único problema para mí sería la falta de variedad en el disco que, por más que la voz es deleitable, termina por aburrirme.

I've always enjoyed Frank Sinatra's voice. Its smooth, it croons, and it can really set a mood. But if I'm going to rate a musician I'd like them to actually create some of the music. Don't get me wrong he is a fantastic singer, but he didn't write these songs or play on them, so no matter how deep I fall into those ol' blue eyes I still got to say this one was a middling effort.

No soy experto en música pero les comparto unos puntos: 1. El inicio de ciertas canciones me recordaban a la pantera rosa. 2. Este disco sale 3 años después de que santa anna vendiera todo el norte de México entonces ya entendí porque hablaba de un monterey californiano y un old méxico jajaja igual ya sabían pero pss yo no 3. había una rola que olía a pañal o se me hacia muy vieja pero no recuerdo cual saludos me despido con sus aplausos silenciosos.

Es un disco bonito, siento que se nota que es soundtrack, pero no me lo podría explicar. La instrumentación, buena, la voz de Frank me gusta mucho, sin embargo, llega un momento en que es un poco cansado, es como lo mismo y seguimos en ese empalagamiento de estos sonidos. "Too Marvelous for Words" y "Love is Here to Stay" creo que son las que más me gustaron. A veces pienso que mucho de este tipo de música, y la asociación a "épocas doradas", es lo que me hacen odiar un poquito menos a Estados Unidos. 8/10

It's a great album through and through, for Frank Sinatra's sound. I just have to admit that I really only like him in smaller doses than this. half an album's worth is fun, an entire album of these crooners blends together for me.

*Swoon*, this cat sure knows how to swing. Jazz standards never fail to satisfy. But the album feels safe and clean, a collection of great singles without much of a through line and that's A-okay. Effortlessly cool and Suave as Ol' Blue Eyes. Perfect for a Cocktail party that you just don't want to end, but I'm not sure I'll return to the whole. Just the parts of its sum.

Peak Sinatra and as smooth as silk from start to finish. It's easy to see how this music and Frank himself became something of a lifestyle brand for a few decades--idealized romance and class.

The album starts off with those strong hipster cocktail party vibes that place me in a fancy hotel bar drinking $14 martinis all by my lonesome. Look, Sinatra sings a lot about dumb "I'm so rich and hot and famous" white people shit but I can't help it if I enjoy some big band every now and then. Also, there's literally a song on here called Makin' Whoopee... such simpler times.

Well it’s Frank Sinatra. What else can you say? He’s no Miss Kittin, unfortunately.

Every song on this album sounded the same, it barely registered to me where one song ended and the next began. Good news is, all of these "different" songs were pretty pleasant, and I honestly can't say anything bad about it. Whatever I was doing while I was listening to this album was just a little but more enjoyable for it.

I feel like I'm supposed to rate this album higher because it's Sinatra, but if I'm honest all the songs sound the same.

An album covering "existing pop standards in a hipper, jazzier fashion". Without having to listened to lots of the previous or subsequent versions, it's hard to say how innovative these arrangements were, but the album certainly feels vital. Even if it's hard to reconcile covers of songs from more than 20 years earlier going toe to toe with Elvis and early rock music, the songs and performances from Sinatra are still evocative of a time and mood. Whether any songs are the definitive versions, this was an enjoyable listen and probably one of the starkest contrasts from the Marshall Mathers LP when the most risqué thing discussed is "Makin' Whoopee"

Listen to the whole thing in one sitting, didn't realise how painfully similar all the songs are. That being said, he's got such a smooth soothing voice it was a fun listen. Relaxing. More good music to have on while you're cookin' by the book.

It's fine. I'd heard a lot of the songs before and I get it, I'm just not super excited about it.

Probably one of the oldest records on this list. Yes, it is remastered, but even with that, it sounds ahead of its time of 1956. At the same time.. from beginning to end of this record, it transports you to a different time and place that most music can not do.

Frankie Sinatra needs to stop peepin' on the swingin' lovers. It was a really classy album - I found myself comparing it a lot to the Ella Fitzgerald's album that we've previously encountered. I think Ella has better songs, but Blue Eyes is ridiculously good too. "You Make Me Feel So Young" & "Love Is Here To Stay" were my favs. "Making Whoopee" was fucking stupid though, I can't describe how lame it felt to me, especially compared to the really classy tracks.

It's Sinatra. It feels like it's always been there, somewhere in the background, like I know even the songs I've never heard. This gets very samey very quickly, but it's fine in the background, doing its thing.

Stem staat in de mastering sterk op de voorgrond, wat soms ten koste gaat van de rest van de muziek. Overal compositie is interessant, dynamisch en zeer ritmisch. Vind het zelf de nummers met wat tempo wisselingen het interessants, bijv. I've got you under my skin of Anything goes.

I mean, something about Frank is really comforting in a weird way? Like warm and fuzzy even when he’s singing about weird stuff like Makin Whoopee. Like Aretha, I find it interesting that it was so common to just re-record the same songs onto albums. I don’t necessarily see it as a negative, just a product of the time. It does look like some lyrics were changed though. My lizard brain wants to rate this a 5, but I think I’ll actually go with a 4.
