Reviews (page 8 of 8)
Oh god it's more late 70s UK punk. At 600+ albums, this project ruins my morning almost every day. It's never anything good. Sometimes I wonder if the author's central goal here was to try and prove that the UK was just as cool as the US. But I'm not from either so I can judge fairly: UK music pisses me off 99% of the time, US only mildly annoys me. US wins. 2/5.
Ugh, nope
couldn't hold my attention. skipped to damage goods, and was underwhelmed. totally understand how this inspired music i like today, but it's not my cup of tea
not for me
I like the energy but nothing much else. Found it tough to get through.
2.5
Out of 325 albums suggested on this platform it really feels like 300 of them are 70s/80s era punk rock. Maybe I need to hear this many albums that all sound the same before I die, but it's grating on me. 8 minutes in and I'm longing for something less repetitive. If the entire album is this formulaic 50 minutes and 39 seconds is going to feel like a lifetime...
Like Beck and the Beastie Boys had a British baby who played punk techno weddings and made up the lyrics to their songs on the spot. Didn't hate it.
Almost good.
Lyrics are a bit clunky at times, not something I'd come back to listen to again but done well enough
I appreciated the "funk rock", but the singing was lazy, repetative, and sounded like a bunch of Stones wannabes.
Listened to on 2/21/22 2.5/5 Favorite Song: Damaged Goods The random noises were repetitive and annoying but overall not that bad
2/21/22 It annoyed me. Had to skip through songs because the background noises were too annoying. Wasn’t the worst thing ever though, just wouldn’t listen to again. Favorite Song: Ether
i actually got so triggered from this album i was really hoping it would be okay but the pitchy and guitar sounds made me so angry for no reason
One of the many punk albums that has interesting riffs and a highly monotonous and ugly sound. Of course, that's the point of punk ,or post-punk, or whatever subgenre of punk /post-punk is this. Thats closing track though.
Not for me. I guess this probably kicked of a genre but coming back to it feels like it has been done better since.
1st listen. Need to hear more of it. 2/5 for now.
Not my cup of tea.
Not good. Sounds like Captain Beefheart at times.
meh
Not a fan
Promising start sound-wise but they fell short of their potential.
Way way to Bri'ish for me. Like the clash but worse
The instrumentation is not too bed and with a completely different vocalist and style of singing, this might have been a good album. But I just sort of hate all of the vocals on this album. From what I heard of the lyrics (didn't actively listen to them) it sounds like they're suuuper edgy.
Eh, another punk-ish album that really feels like it meanders all over the place, melodically and tempo-wise for no very good reason. I'm giving it 2 stars, but could be convinced it's not worth that much.
Not a fan of this LP
Like the funk riffs and lead guitar Punk singing is shite A lot of the tunes sound similar
Just another typical 80’s vibe. Nothing special but it wasn’t grating.
Post-punk The whole album sort of blurs together. Songs sound the same and nothing really stood out to me. 2.5/5
The punk sound was there, but man I just cannot vibe with that discordant guitar
Not great vocals or very insightful lyrics
Sounds like if you mixed the Specials and the Clash together. Mostly enjoyable but nothing really stood out on it.
This is probably a 2.5/5 for me. There were some elements I liked but I mostly just found this noisy
Distinctive discordant guitar and disjointed rhythmns - it sounds like they're playing The Jam's News of the World backwards. The bastard children of The Buzzcocks and Devo. Occasionally interesting but mostly annoying.
Casi no me ha llamado la atención.
snooze
Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: Ether, Damaged Goods, I Found That Essence Rare Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: I was hopeful going into this, but it was kinda just noise. All kinda sounded the same, once you've heard the first 4 songs you've heard the whole album. Disappointed.
2/5 naaaah
Too Hard
I appreciate it in the context of the time period, but not much beyond that
It was fine
Not much variety. A bit like The Clash, but not as good.
Unimpressed. Seemed like every chorus was just repeating the same phrase 4-5 times. The vocals were also kind of monotonous. I did like the song “I found that essence rare”.
Tiene algo pero la verdad es que no me llega a gustar
Feels like i've herad 100's of variations of this album
Didn't like it.
Meh
meh
Not my cup of tea.
Not a fan of the type of mysic
Like a whiney Levelers with less dimension to their sound. Meh.
It was alright
Du rock anglais franchement pénible.
Never quite clicked for me. On a bit of a shit run.
The lyrics remind me of Fugazi, but without the slogans
There was nothing here that I enjoyed
J’ai pas aimé mais je saurais pas trop expliquer pourquoi
I love their accents. The music just isn’t my vibe unfortunately. Fav song is ‘Natural’s Not in It’.
Man, A lot of people like this?
Way ahead of their time - but not in a good way.
not a fan sorry:/ /
Wooooooowwww, it sounds just like Happy Mondays from yesterday, just 10 years older. Please fuck off, why is this list bent towards shitty britpop and indie.
Impressively bad. It's almost hard to believe that someone might have made this album thinking they were making legitimately good music.
nope
Absolutely not
Most of the album was alright (still probably 2 stars), but the last song Love Like Anthrax was excruciating.
Meh
where are all these 5s and 4s coming from this is hot ass 😭😭
while I can acknowledge this album is enormously influential, I also kind of hate everything about it.
I am not a big fan of punk rock in general. I did not enjoy listening to this album at all.
Never come across Gang of Four before, and I hope not to again. Unsure why is this on the list. It's just a bit naff.
The repetitive lyrics drove me nuts.
Strange sound. Strange music.
Nein, Nix für mich!
I’ve always been into alternative music. This album was reminiscent of early weekend mornings in the 2000s. Guitar hero type shit. When your parents are still sleeping so you can play video games. It’s rhythmic, catchy and on to something… for the first quarter of the song… for the entire album. Probably wouldn't listen to again. Made me question if I like alternative music. 1.5/5. For the record, I’m horrible at guitar hero. That’s why these songs are (I’m gonna quote my boi Mason) “aggressively up my [guitar hero] alley”. Fight me.
Snooze fest
Tedious at best. Some interesting bass lines being thrown around by all in all not much here that would make someone want to hear this again. Barely worth the first listen.
I found this unlistenable. Just seemingly random noise and annoying shouting. I don't like punk much anyway but at least The Clash or The Ramones had some material resembling music
This album is dog shit. The title is a lie and the cover is dumb. Worst.band.name.ever. 1001 album worthy: no - 91/168
Complete opposite feeling. This sucked
1.5
First 3 songs were annoying with Not Great Man almost making me turn the album off. Damaged goods was almost good then the rest was bad. I liked no song on this whole album. The whole thing sounds like a teenagers first try at making music. 0/10
Just overall a terrible album. There was not a single song on the album that could be considered decent. I wish the vocalist never picked up a mic.
Not for me
Nope
This sucks, also hate when they add distortion but with no sustain to just sound like pure noise or something breaking. (Idk how to describe this sound)
Awful…the only positive was that I got to watch a sexy man build flat pack furniture whilst listening.
I'm not a punk I guess
Hipoteticamente se trata de um disco de punk festeiro. O instrumental parece tentar desenvolver o clima animado, mas na sequência dos vocais deixa tudo aborrecido.
More forgettable punk rock
Not my favorite, some interesting stuff. I’m betting pretty innovative in ‘79, just not vibing with me. I think it’s the vocals. Loved the first songs opening and was excited for the album till the vocals came in
Not for me
I have a feeling the guy who made this book was british. I can see how theyre influential I guess? Talk singing, we like that?
Pretty basic and Pretty boring. Still really not my style of music. There were a few I enjoyed on here but overall it didn't click with me. Favorites were Contract and Damaged Goods
if stress was an album and not a feeling
Really
Doesn't help that I have a headache right now, but this sounds like someone using an angle grinder on concrete.
Punk but with better bass. I liked the songs that had a hard bass line, but a lot of the songs were the whiny, repetitive punk voices. Not my fave. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: love like anthrax
Fuck post punk
Did nothing.
p440. 1979. 1 star. Unpleasant proto Franz Ferdinand, but without the talent or tunes. Not much to like here.
No
Nope.
I don’t like post-punk. I’ve tried to listen to this album multiple times over the years and never got what people like about it. Tried again and still don’t. So harsh and discordant. Not my kind of thing I guess.
Not for me
Didn't like it
Nothing too exciting.
To borrow from Gang of Four's own lyrics, this album gives me migraine. Rating: 1.5/5 Playlist track: Damaged Goods Date listened: 09/03/23
It's just not for me. I know they are influential, so maybe it is just a failing in myself. I am a fan of the most of the artists that claim GO4 as an influence though. This rating is not saying I think they are a one, I was just happy there album as over.
How is this consider to be music? I got five songs deep and gave up.
Didn’t enjoy this at all.
As with the majority of punk music (everything other than Clash?), this is a bland and rather annoying to listen to album. The best thing about punk music is the world moving on.
Not for me.
Disjointed jangling with no traces of actual songs or melodies.
This music is not for me. Sorry.
Noisy in a bad way. I'd rather listen to Devo. There is more melody and dorkiness there. I kind of suffered through this. I'm just not interested in taking a deeper dive after listening through this record. The guitars are really hard to handle. Sounds like a strat on the bridge pickup through a rat pedal. That should be against the law. HA. The bass holds it down though. Gotta hand it to that guy/gal.
Didn’t work for me
No es mi estilo. Vamos que no me ha gustado una mierda
not a fan
Meh it was ok.
