Not for me

As with most post-punk this was a bit too loud and boring for me. I’ve listened to it four times and the only track that registers is the one about migraine. 2.5

Didn't do anything for me.

The lyrics are kind of cool and alt, but it feels like they focused too much on the lyrics and not enough on the music. Also, it’s sort of hard to hear the lyrics because they don’t enunciate and the instruments are comparatively loud. It feels a like an unrefined Panic! but not really good.

Meh. Nothing I haven’t heard before.

mejor de lo que esperaba pero no repetiré

Never heard before - quite punk brit-pop - can see why it might have been influential but not massively for me.

Rating: 2/5 ⭐️ I thoroughly enjoyed gang of four’s take on multiple deep rooted topics surrounding politics, hatred and violence within the UK and political climate at the time. I enjoyed the upbeat, engaging beat with their upsetting lyrics that makes people dance while also LISTEN to what they’re saying. It’s like they entice you at first then start singing about their main concerns which immediately hook you! I can definitely see why bands such as RHCPs and LCD Sound system gravitated towards this band and especially this album for their ‘sound’. One of the great pioneers of this genre! However, all of the songs do sound the exact same, which is great if they enjoy the feeling and music they produce, for me? It’s alright, don’t think I would relisten to the album, especially anytime soon. Another point to note is the COVER! amazing cover love the political message even within the cover, let alone the music . It makes you curious about what the cowboy will do to the misunderstanding indian and wants you to ALREADY feel a type of way before the record even starts. I do love that synth guitar though, so creepy but soooo fun! Favourite song: 5.45 Leas favourite song: Contract :)

Bit boring after a while. But not the worst thing I’ve heard.

Fine as per x

It was ok but all felt like the same song

Blah did not enjoy

More post punk. I gotta say, I really struggle to tell the difference between most of this stuff -- what counts as powerful new wave and what counts as more garbage? At the end of the day, I liked this more than Talking Heads. Fave tracks: - Ether - Natural's Not In It - Damaged Goods - Return The Gift - I Found That Essence Rare - Glass - 5.45 Edit: Boy, I was feeling generous this day. Still better than Talking Heads. Two stars.

My 7yr daughter listened to 'I found that essence rare' with me and she said, I don't like the voice, it sounds like "whining, whining, winge, winge, Bikini" I tend to agree. I tried to find some enjoyment in the bass lines, but the guitar and vocals ruined it for me.

um! LMFAO

not my vibe. didn’t finish the whole thing

I think I have heard this exact album 550,000 times (I have never heard this album before) and that tells me a lot, but it's probably good music

This certainly was an album on the list

#808. Super mid. I kinda already forgot what it sounded like to be honest. 2/5: meh

Gang of Two Stars sorry guys bored my favorite couple ok songs but mostly my eyes are bleeding

Maybe if I were to give this a second listen something would jump out at me. But it felt like a series of songs that mostly sounded the same that I just couldn’t get into. 2.5/5

kind of a slog for me, was waiting for it to be over. didn't enjoy it much, so here is a 2 for it

The album would have been a lot better if there weren’t songs made to sound terrible on purpose with all that dissonance. Otherwise, there were some tracks I really enjoyed.

Not very good, nor interesting

Not terrible, but it all sounds the same

I’m so tired of this lame British crap. How many albums like this can they possibly put on this list? A solid 2. Surprise surprise.

British Punk is not my favorite Genre, and I honestly struggled to get through this. However, themes were good, but honestly the entire album just dragged on and on. 2/5.

My beard is the one part of my appearance that I put real effort into looking good; the one part that real care goes into, and I really feel is important to me. Why am I telling you this? Because you need to understand how upsetting to me it is that tonight I accidentally took a chunk out of it while trimming it, and completely decimated it in the process of trying to fix it. I know it's superficial, and it'll grow back, but still, it matters to me... I also just spent time tonight cleaning my daughter's bed and her toys and her hair after she woke up and vomited at 1am; and this not long after injuring my back hanging laundry. I tell you this so that you may understand: when I say that listening to this album was one of the best things I did tonight it's technically true, but not because it was in any way good. This album is a great example of "I really didn't need to hear this before I died".

A little weird, fun, funky, trancy(?)

Too repetitive Not my vibe

Completely unknown to me. I don't think I'll come back to it. This project continues to reiterate that I don't find joy in punk and post punk.

The British do love their punk music. Unfortunately, I do not.

Civilized Punk rock with songs that aren’t very memorable. While I didn’t find this album to be horrific to listen to, it did sound like the same song with 11 extended pauses every couple of minutes. Not really for me, but if I was at a party and this was the background noise over the din of the crowd, I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

Mid but jot the worst I’ve heard

Ei tää nyt oikein nappaa mulla. Jotenkin keskinkertaista. 2/5

All these songs sounded the same to me but I can see how this band and this album were ahead of their time

There were few and far between moments where I said "this sounds good". Droning voice. Annoying instruments.

Started okay but then jusy became boring. 2 stars or D+.

First half of this I was getting into and enjoying the album, but I think it starting getting annoying and maybe something about the voice started draining me.

Knowing nothing about them, I was looking forward to this based on the band's info on Spotify: "Gang of Four is one of the most radically important, and influential rock groups of the last 40 years." I am underwhelmed.

Far too long for the type of content presented here. Not bad in the beginning but by the end I wasn't impressed. 2/5

I remember liking them more than I did after listening to this. Johnny One Note.

Musikken og især bas er fed, men jeg kan bare ikke lide engelske tekster (UK) det er for enslydende med alt andet britisk musik

Another excessively dull British rock band.

I can appreciate the influence this album had, especially with its post-punk sound that would go on to inspire a lot of early grunge and alternative bands. You can hear the rawness and angular energy in the riffs, and I get why it mattered historically. That said, outside of the influence, there was not much here that I could really get behind. The songs feel sharp and aggressive, but they never pulled me in or stuck with me after the fact. It is more interesting to think about its place in music history than to actually sit down and listen to it all the way through. For me, this one works better as an artifact of the post-punk movement than as something I would want to revisit. Respect for the impact, but not much enjoyment in the moment.

Was ist daran besonders?

British punk proto ska. Just made me want to listen to the police

A great bass and drum section that lays down some serious groove, but hard to move beyond the clanging amateur guitar and the godawful grating affected vocals. Bumped it up to a 2 simply for the rhythm section.

Blind album and artist. I loved the groovy grit of this but not enough to keep my interests throughout. At 1 point I was bored I think.

Abrasive. Plodding. No dynamics. No beauty.

01) Ether - 6,5 02) Natural's Not in It - 6,5 03) Not Great Men - 6,0 04) Damaged Goods - 6,5 05) Return the Gift - 6,0 06) Guns Before Butter - 5,5 07) I Found That Essence Rare - 6,5 08) Glass - 6,5 09) Contract - 5,5 10) At Home He's a Tourist - 5,5 11) 5.45 - 5,45 :-) 12) Love Like Anthrax - 5,5 TOTAL: 6,00 (60/100) Current ranking: 504/640

Worthy and wordy but the instrumentation is so dull. Hard to get past a set of songs which sound alike. Most of the songs have the same opening sequence. Not unlike Wire.

Man, what da heeeeelllll is this album cover? I have no idea what to expect from this. Oh, more British punk. I’ve never been a punk guy, and I think the ship where I could have become one is already far out at sea. In any case, I’ll try to be open minded. Maybe this album could cause me to start paddling after the cruiseliner. A pretty standard punk album all things considered, though maybe this one was ahead of the pack. I’m still not a fan of the jittery, offputting sound and sickly vocals of these albums, but I’ve heard far worse from the genre. There’s nothing in here which really sticks out to me, though there are some alright bits. I like the funky sound of “Not Great Men”. “I Found That Essence Rare” is alright. The songwriting is pretty solid and I, again, appreciate the breakneck instrumental. “At Home He’s a Tourist” has some some competent songwriting. Gonna consult the book for this one. “...groundbreaking sound is due to the tight funk rhythms”. Very left-wing, though that’s all of punk, really. Wikipedia says this album is a big player in the post-punk movement and has received its fair share of accolades. While I’m not a fan of this album, I can acknowledge that this pick is worthwhile. I cosign.

This was fine.

It's OK, I suppose. I don't really like 70s punk that much, it really just sounds like everything else in this genre from its time. It's a 2.5 star album, it doesn't suck, but it's also not very good.

Surprise another mediocre English rock band.

A unique sound. Feels a lot like B-52s and some others. However it didn’t resonate with me. The sound developed from this down the way by other bands, I tend to enjoy more. 4/10 just since it’s not vibing with me

It's like if Flock of Seagulls had a baby with the B52s. Not my jam, very stilted 80s sounds

Got a bit bored after a while tbh 2

Punk isn't for me, this was just ok. 2*

This definitely wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't bad. I feel like it doesn't know what it wants to be. It is VERY funky (which were my favorite aspects), but has some punk aspects, but also some very avante-garde noises. It was definitely interesting. The vocalist bothers me sometimes tho. VERY funky album. Actual....2.5. Liked Songs: "Natural's Not In It" , "Not Great Men" , "Damaged Goods" , "I Found That Essence Rare" , "At Home He's A Tourist" , "5.45"

hmm... interesting i can sense quality, but it was strangely a bit monotonous felt a bit too clean and overthought at times however, second half was much more engaging Best tunes: glass, at home he's a tourist, 5.45, love like anthrax

This isn't quite right for me

Every song started strong, but ended up being kinda repetitive. I don't regret listening to this album, but I wouldn't listen to it again.

Silly and noisy in parts, this album is best when the band is all driving together towards their musical goals. They seemed to run out of inspiration halfway through though and the back half of the album was a slog.

Punchy punk rock that's far too staccato for my taste

It’s too hot for music this dissonant.

Liked the lyrics and the sound, but didn't pull me in.

British rock 🥴 Vocals are much to be desired, instrumentals were catchy. 2

Ser inspoen andre band he fått frå det, men for alternativ punk for min smak

eh, not my thing

Definitely needs a relisten — great lyrics, good energy, but dissonant, stripped-back, post-punk does not add up to a very enjoyable listen.

No, thank you

I wish I appreciated punk music more because I bet this slaps if you are into that kinda thing

The problem here as I see it, is you can be punk or post-punk or whatever but you do still need good tunes. I found that essence rare (apart from on that track ironically).

I don't know another band that wants to be The Clash or something. I didn't listen to the whole thing through. They're not particularly good at their instruments

Not for me this

Oh, very interesting! Like punk with the edges filed down. Not really what I would pick, but it's easy to see how this was so influential, bridging sounds of the 70s and 80s.

There is nothing special about this that would make me want to listen to it again over any other album in this genre

Interesting early punk with some funny lyrics. Not very diverse; songs sound very similar

Ok sound. Clash vibe.

Punk music seemingly about the tedium of everyday life. Some fun grooves, and a bit of experimentation with sound, but not much here to excite. I’d take the Clash any day. Two stars for me ⭐️ ⭐️

Nothing to write home about.

Hmmm.. lots of noisy, unstructured guitar making it difficult to really get into. In the end, it kind of became a chunk of background noise. Unfortunately, I didn't really enjoy it despite giving it a chance. 3/10.

Most of it was on my nerve

Ужасно

Médiocre.

This just didn't do anything for me, but I didn't hate it. So 2 stars, I guess.

Is there a reason why every punk (or post-punk) singer has to sound like that? Their weird enunciation and questionable ability to sing in tune makes them sound inebriated and even more British than usual. With few exceptions, this is what all of punk sounds like, and often I'd prefer having just the instrumental (or the instrumental plus a singer who's been formally trained). The songwriting isn't really there either. Sure, it breaks old conventions – which I guess is the point of punk – but those conventions exist for a reason: they sound good when followed, and bad otherwise. The main hit off this record, Damaged Goods, abandons any sort of rhyming scheme with its chorus, "Sometimes I'm thinking that I love you / But I know it's only lust", and its painfully bad repeated verse: Sweat's running down your neck / Sweat's running down your back / Heated surface in the sun / Colder surface in the night (never saw your body) / Your kiss so sweet / Your sweat so sour". (A highly upvoted reviewer said this lyric was great, but I don't see it.) I'm amazed it was the lead single. Even the bass, which is generally very good throughout the album, hardly moves from the tonic note of each chord in this song. Great bass mixing/playing in this album. It's clear, driving, and the main "hook deliverer" when you'd normally expect the lead guitar to take on that role. The key tracks (listed below) all have solid basslines that partially distract from the bad singing. The drumming and lead guitar are somewhere in the middle: not great, but not bad either. High-energy stuff. This could be good listening for a morning jog. I'm not a fan of post-punk in general. The massive popularity of punk in the 70s meant that punk had become the "establishment" genre, much like how rock'n'roll had ruled over the 50s and 60s. Post-punk is essentially an genre trying to act musically rebellious while doing exactly the opposite. 2/5 Key tracks: Natural's Not In It, Return the Gift, I Found That Essence Rare

Not my thing, too repetitive and not that interesting to me. Still ok music.

Instantly forgettable, not very interesting.

Pretty drab for what I think could have been quite a fun and energetic vibe for an album. I get the influence they had on other bands etc. but really this whole album just seemed strained and the music struggling to come out of it.

It's reminds me of The Jam's "The Entertainment", however I prefer the Jam. But otherwise okay-ish early new wave.

I think this might be one of those albums that was probably quite significant at the time, but sounds pretty unremarkable to me listening now. I'm not a massive fan of post-punk and this really didn't catch my ear or inspire me much. I just wanted to be listening to Love Bites by the Buzzcocks instead.

Imagine a band that sounds like an uncoordinated shitty version of The Police crossed with The Clash. That is this band.

Sounds like dudes who were in a a punk band 15 years ago, got back together, and wanted to change their sound but don't know how to. It's a pseudo-clash style band and they're not pulling any of it off.

This album is about as close to punk as post punk can get, while still getting away with being called post punk. And I feel like that's honestly this album's biggest weakness. The whole idea of post punk is to take punk's raw aggression, and channel that anger into something more melodic and emotional. But this album blurs the lines between the 2 genres so much, and you're left with something that doesn't have the rawness and grit of punk, but also lacks the more melodic beauty of post punk.

Not bad. Until I looked at the release date, I thought this album was from the 80s. While that is an impressive feat, it is not a very memorable album.

Not sure, there’s lots of long-winded reviews of this, and mostly giving 5 stars….I don’t it get myself. I may dead inside.

- Was about to write something about how I have heard something like this before but realized this was released in 1979 saur. Have to agree that it was probably a pretty trailblazing piece of work at the time. Not sure if it's entirely my speed in its entirety, but chunks of it I really really enjoy. - at home he's a tourist is fantastic - overall enjoyed one or two tracks off this but I don't think I will be returning to it anytime soon

Un par de canciones padres pero no, el punk, neopunk o lo que sea no es lo mío.

1. Couldn't listen to this all the way through 2. This one either 3. Nope 4. Hey! Not bad! Maybe this album is getting better? 5. Nope 6. Listenable, but didn't enjoy 7. Meh 8. This guy might be restless? Skipped a little more than halfway through 9. Tedious. It's a good thing punk songs are so short 10. Sigh... 11. OK, I guess? 12. No thanks. Fortunately, this album is over

50 minutes that felt like 150

I can see why these guys never took off

More and more I’m realising that I just hate Punk. It’s not really offensive or anything, I just find it so incredibly bland. There’s nothing interesting to listen to here.

кек, я в своем сознании отношу это просто к панку, с такими молодыми пьяными ребятами из английского паба мне такое сложно слушать, а каких-то бенгеров я для себя не услышала. Ну, задорно

I can see its influence on rock music but I still found most of the songs on the album uninteresting but occasionally a good song would come on. Not one to come back to.

Empty, tinny... Maybe it's a lyrics thing.

This was ok but got annoying very quickly

I was very interested in the band. The genre appealed to me. I liked the cover. I also liked the first track. It may be that the music on the album is quite exciting. It got on my nerves towards the end of the album. I probably won't listen to it again. 2/5

We’re (I’m) around 215 albums into this list and the realization is coming over me that I’ll be getting real tired of the inclusion of albums like this - it’s the new random psychedelic rock album inclusion. I don’t care if these guys influenced bigger bands, the album just passes right by

More like gang of bore

I don't like punk... I like the odd song but I can't dig a whole album of it!

Its fine, I would rather listen to DEVO.

pretty forgettable

just too minimal rock for me

Droning, monotonous with a lot of enthusiasm on the artists Side but not mine apparently makes this post punk

Edgy British boys playing the worst sounding guitars I've ever heard on a professionally produced album. Drumming was nothing special. The bass was actually good in spots. Vocals were very British and spoken not sung, from a discontented point of view, repeating the same lines over and over. No thanks, I'll take The Clash or even Sex Pistols over this any time.

2.5* and didn't get rounded up.

2.5 stars. Oaky album.

Very sloppy instrumentals that was probably done on purpose that I did not enjoy at all. Singers were also not my favorite. Another punk album, another 2 star

So tired of this very tame terrible brit punk/pop

I've consistently struggled with albums like this. I'm sure they are legendary and formative, and I'm sure that every single band on the THPS soundtrack owned their tapes. I have a hard time listening to it today in 2024 because it seems like very stripped down simple music with some guys yelling. There isn't a lot for me here, but I'm sure I owe them a thank you for inspiring bands I do like. 4/10

Managed to listen to three quarters of the album. I found it quite samey after a time and then got bored with it. Don’t think I’d bother looking for them again so.........a probably harsh 2*

Somewhat tolerable for a post punk album. The real stars here are the bass and drums; growling bass lines and some tight technical drum work that’s somewhat of a precursor to the Red Hot chili peppers. Vocals are entirely forgettable, monotonous, British drowning that adds nothing. Guitar work is standard, fuzzy punk, very little flavor or skill, just kind of existing to make the music sound angrier. I feel like there could be a pretty cool alt funk record in here if you deleted everything except for the rhythm section, but unfortunately, we got a mediocre punk record instead.

a bit repetitive, songs are really long, idk if i'm in the mood Damaged goods is good. 2.5

Ist so mittel toll. Kann man anhören, würde ich wahrscheinlich weiterspringen, wenn es bei Spottity Radio käme. So bisschen Indi...

It was okay

I got basically the same album yesterday - a British rock band from the 80s (roughly) that has some guitar and drums in the background and someone talking stuff over them. This is one step further, which is why I have rated it one star more, as it is overall slightly more decent, but still pretty meh.

This is pretty much by the numbers post punk with agit prop lyrics about IRA prisoners, situationist politics and violence on TV. At one point he genuinely sings “Love’ll get you like a case of Anthrax and that’s something I don’t wanna catch”. The high point is probably the song about drugs (where he has a choice between Asprin and Paracetamol).

Terrible.

I thought I was going to hate this initially, but ended up finding it okay. Don't think I'd listen to it again though. Just misses out on 3*

Generic British rock album #2489

Está ok.

Unique sound only until it repeats 12 times in a row.

A late friend of mine was super into the Gang of Four. Talked about how awesome they were anytime you asked them about music. Is it better than most 70's punk, musically? Sure. Is it whiny? Absolutely. And there's only so much whiny I can take. Unexpected banger: Return the Gift, I guess.

4 / 10 Punk rock, sonido poco elaborado.

Alright

Liked the punk vibe and the few songs I was familiar with. But it got long and boring.

was alright nothing special compared to many other albums in the genre to this time of music

I agree with Collin

This was just really noisy to listen to and I didn't like it.

Meh. Not so much.

After the album finished a Fugazi song came on and that one song was better than this whole album. That isn't to say Fugazi is bad, but rather how this album sucks.

Yeah, that's a no from me.

Dude, I couldn't get into this. Thumbzers downzers.

I actually want to give this a 2.5

It was alright. I thought I would enjoy post punk more. There were random instances of harsh, discordant sounds throughout the album that took me out of the moment.

Best Song: Not Great Men. It's got a decent groove and the guitar sounds like it probably influenced the genre. Worst Song: Guns Before Butter. In an album of amateur-sounding tracks, this sounded the most amateur. Overall: Maybe they inspired other people to make better stuff than this, but there's absolutely no reason to listen to this album unless you have nostalgia for it.

boring and uncreative. the vocalists voice is weak and simplistic, +his rhymes are whack, guitarist learned how to do one thing and does it on every song throughout the entire song - extremely one-dimensional. bass and drums - well they exist i suppose. it was evident that it is a debut album. its just the same song sung 12 different ways. I guess the lyrics arent THAT bad. its punk, so its politically charged, but when everything else in the song is mediocre, its kind of hard to try to decipher the message Significant 30/94 Liked 14/94 Added 4/94 NNN I wasnt entertained.

Just ok

1. ether - 1 2. naturalz - 1 3. not great men - 1 4. damaged goodz - 1 5. return the gift - 1 6. gunz before butter - 1.5 7. i found - 1 8. glazz - 1.5 9. contract - 1 10. at home - 1.5 11. 5.45 - 1.5 12. love like anthraz - 1 13. outzide - 1 14. zend the army - 0 15. her factory - 1.5

Lot of noise but not enjoying it very much. First time intentionally listening to post-punk, but not a big fan so far. I'm sure he's saying things but it all sounds kinda like nonsense. Favorite Track: I Found That Essence Rare

So much British punk on this list. This was fine. Nothing groundbreaking and none of the songs really stood out to me. Probably won't listen to it again.

I didn't hate it, but by the time the last few tracks were playing I was ready for this to be over. A little too dissonant for my taste.

Garage band sounding

Very, very monotonous lyrics which amused our family. The music itself was good and sounds modern for 1979. Maybe this is an acquired taste? The songs had things to say but I struggled to listen to them. Listens: 2 Fave Track: I didn’t have one. Rating: 2, can’t get past the shouted lyrics

I came here ready to show up for my genres and I just couldn't. There wasn't a little catchy sparkle in there.

Ok, solid music.

Genuinely: eh. Talk singing, buncha strumming, simple drumbeats, sounded like the Clash but without any of their catchy singles. It's not bad music, it's just there. A 2.5.

Sounds a bit dated now.

What a shame to follow up such a surprisingly good album with a bland, boring punk album. This sounds just like all the other ones and unsurprisingly also has a bunch of political commentary in the lyrics. It has just enough funk to avoid a 1 but it chose a really bad time to be generated on this list.

errrr. i didn't like this. it's just not attractive, honestly, like the vocals aren't great and the guitar and the drums are kinda flat...

Didn’t really do much for me

Forglemmelig punk

Great bass, great melody but overall not a single song caught my attention as a highlight. Solid album but not for me.

Most of this album sounded like fairly generic punk, but the tail end wasn't too bad all things considered. Just not really my cup of tea.

Ehhh I dunno I barely even noticed the music was playing. Not very ear catching and felt kinda basic

It was ok, couldn’t pick a standout song though.

Some interesting sounds but not much grabbed my attention

Kind of meh. Not something I’d revisit

Fine post punk, but I'm not interested in it

i don't regret my time listening to this, but would not listen again willingly

Sadly it didnt really stand out to me

Allt í lagi post-pönk, pínu millivegur milli pönks og nýrómantíkur, myndi ég segja.

I got quite a long way into this before I even realised that it had been playing. It was just kind of moving along in the background. Its alright, it's in no way exciting though. It all feels a bit one-note, with very little ambition.

I never really listened to the Gang of Four before - I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Very of its time, and I'm sure plenty of others influenced but not convinced there was much there beyond the sound/vibe.

Fine, very same-y.

Well executed but not my sound. Post Punk 80s... His voice sounds like a lot of bands of the time... Did he sing with Duran Duran?

I can see how it was influential, but it’s not for me.

Generic brit rock

I liked a few songs...

It's ok, just not my taste

This record has a ton of great ideas. But they never seem to get taken advantage of. The songs don't seem to go anywhere. But the influence that this sound had on other bands is clear. I hear Arctic Monkeys and other jangly British bands here. Overall this just landed a little boring. But it was okay.

Gang Of Four a ici essayé de s'inspirer de l'excellent album des Killers, c'est malheureusement complétement raté.

a few good ones, but honestly feels like some kids asking their mother if they could make rock music and then they just scream and stuff. the "your kiss so sweet, sweat so sour" - part is either genius or just dumb cannot decide yet.

Nic specjalnego, nawet jednej dobrej nuty nie ma

All the charm of a 70s British cover band and only half the talent. Yikes. Could I have that half hour back?

Really not my style, thought the whole thing sounded the same

Too dissonant for me.

Not my cup of tea

Not very interesting.

Really rough proto-punk

Sounded generic. Only track I remembered was 'Damaged Goods' because 'Your kiss so sweet Your sweat so sour' kind of get me some interesting images in my head. But it's just lyrics and not music itself. All songs sounded the same and also I felt like I heard it all before only with different words.

Didn't do much for me...

This album is meh. I think I enjoyed it a little more than the other punk albums, but I still didn't enjoy it too much. Would give it 1.5 stars if I could. Favorite song: Love like anthrax Worst song: Glass

Other than the cool guitar production and some decent riffs, this is a very annoying album. The anti-melody approach to the vocals, the poor production of the other instruments and the lack of actual songwriting, with a long run time, just made this not that good of an album.

Despite repeated listens I just couldn't get into this. I did have their follow-up album Solid Gold at one time and I seem recall that was much better. This was dull and plodding

Beetje gekke muziek kan ik wel waarderen. Dit is me toch net iets te rommeling. **

Not for me. There were some great parts on the songs but it just felt chaotic without really any purpose for me. I zoned out after a few songs which already tells it did not really captivate me.

Entertainment misses more than hits for me; has some annoying early new wave influences and a bunch of stuff that sounds like 2000s indie pop I didn't like either. Misses the edge it tries to carry, 2/5.

Whiny. Amateur. Not bad, but not very listenable

Skipped my way through it

Not much to my liking, with a typical Brit rock sound that doesn't pick my attention.

Never got into Brit punk, and while this wasn’t bad, it wasn’t my favorite. Maybe a song once in a while, but the album started to sound the same every song

The first three songs use the exact same rhythm and really blend together into one long song. By “Return the Gift” we start to hear some better diversity but in the very next track half way through we’re back to the exact same sound. Not enough diversity throughout the album. It became quite boring

Aside from Damaged Goods I found this just annoying - not one for me.

Oh god it's more late 70s UK punk. At 600+ albums, this project ruins my morning almost every day. It's never anything good. Sometimes I wonder if the author's central goal here was to try and prove that the UK was just as cool as the US. But I'm not from either so I can judge fairly: UK music pisses me off 99% of the time, US only mildly annoys me. US wins. 2/5.

Ugh, nope

couldn't hold my attention. skipped to damage goods, and was underwhelmed. totally understand how this inspired music i like today, but it's not my cup of tea

not for me

I like the energy but nothing much else. Found it tough to get through.

Out of 325 albums suggested on this platform it really feels like 300 of them are 70s/80s era punk rock. Maybe I need to hear this many albums that all sound the same before I die, but it's grating on me. 8 minutes in and I'm longing for something less repetitive. If the entire album is this formulaic 50 minutes and 39 seconds is going to feel like a lifetime...

Like Beck and the Beastie Boys had a British baby who played punk techno weddings and made up the lyrics to their songs on the spot. Didn't hate it.

Almost good.

Lyrics are a bit clunky at times, not something I'd come back to listen to again but done well enough

I appreciated the "funk rock", but the singing was lazy, repetative, and sounded like a bunch of Stones wannabes.

Listened to on 2/21/22 2.5/5 Favorite Song: Damaged Goods The random noises were repetitive and annoying but overall not that bad

2/21/22 It annoyed me. Had to skip through songs because the background noises were too annoying. Wasn’t the worst thing ever though, just wouldn’t listen to again. Favorite Song: Ether

i actually got so triggered from this album i was really hoping it would be okay but the pitchy and guitar sounds made me so angry for no reason

One of the many punk albums that has interesting riffs and a highly monotonous and ugly sound. Of course, that's the point of punk ,or post-punk, or whatever subgenre of punk /post-punk is this. Thats closing track though.

Not for me. I guess this probably kicked of a genre but coming back to it feels like it has been done better since.

1st listen. Need to hear more of it. 2/5 for now.

Not my cup of tea.

Not good. Sounds like Captain Beefheart at times.

Not a fan

Promising start sound-wise but they fell short of their potential.

Way way to Bri'ish for me. Like the clash but worse

The instrumentation is not too bed and with a completely different vocalist and style of singing, this might have been a good album. But I just sort of hate all of the vocals on this album. From what I heard of the lyrics (didn't actively listen to them) it sounds like they're suuuper edgy.

Eh, another punk-ish album that really feels like it meanders all over the place, melodically and tempo-wise for no very good reason. I'm giving it 2 stars, but could be convinced it's not worth that much.

Not a fan of this LP

Like the funk riffs and lead guitar Punk singing is shite A lot of the tunes sound similar

Just another typical 80’s vibe. Nothing special but it wasn’t grating.

Post-punk The whole album sort of blurs together. Songs sound the same and nothing really stood out to me. 2.5/5

The punk sound was there, but man I just cannot vibe with that discordant guitar

Not great vocals or very insightful lyrics

Sounds like if you mixed the Specials and the Clash together. Mostly enjoyable but nothing really stood out on it.

This is probably a 2.5/5 for me. There were some elements I liked but I mostly just found this noisy

Distinctive discordant guitar and disjointed rhythmns - it sounds like they're playing The Jam's News of the World backwards. The bastard children of The Buzzcocks and Devo. Occasionally interesting but mostly annoying.

Casi no me ha llamado la atención.

snooze

Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: Ether, Damaged Goods, I Found That Essence Rare Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: I was hopeful going into this, but it was kinda just noise. All kinda sounded the same, once you've heard the first 4 songs you've heard the whole album. Disappointed.

2/5 naaaah

Too Hard

I appreciate it in the context of the time period, but not much beyond that

It was fine

Not much variety. A bit like The Clash, but not as good.

Unimpressed. Seemed like every chorus was just repeating the same phrase 4-5 times. The vocals were also kind of monotonous. I did like the song “I found that essence rare”.

Tiene algo pero la verdad es que no me llega a gustar

Feels like i've herad 100's of variations of this album

Didn't like it.

Not my cup of tea.

Not a fan of the type of mysic

Like a whiney Levelers with less dimension to their sound. Meh.

It was alright

Du rock anglais franchement pénible.

Never quite clicked for me. On a bit of a shit run.

The lyrics remind me of Fugazi, but without the slogans

J’ai pas aimé mais je saurais pas trop expliquer pourquoi

I love their accents. The music just isn’t my vibe unfortunately. Fav song is ‘Natural’s Not in It’.

Man, A lot of people like this?

Way ahead of their time - but not in a good way.

not a fan sorry:/ /

Wooooooowwww, it sounds just like Happy Mondays from yesterday, just 10 years older. Please fuck off, why is this list bent towards shitty britpop and indie.

Impressively bad. It's almost hard to believe that someone might have made this album thinking they were making legitimately good music.

Absolutely not

Most of the album was alright (still probably 2 stars), but the last song Love Like Anthrax was excruciating.

where are all these 5s and 4s coming from this is hot ass 😭😭

while I can acknowledge this album is enormously influential, I also kind of hate everything about it.

I am not a big fan of punk rock in general. I did not enjoy listening to this album at all.

Never come across Gang of Four before, and I hope not to again. Unsure why is this on the list. It's just a bit naff.

The repetitive lyrics drove me nuts.

Strange sound. Strange music.

Nein, Nix für mich!

I’ve always been into alternative music. This album was reminiscent of early weekend mornings in the 2000s. Guitar hero type shit. When your parents are still sleeping so you can play video games. It’s rhythmic, catchy and on to something… for the first quarter of the song… for the entire album. Probably wouldn't listen to again. Made me question if I like alternative music. 1.5/5. For the record, I’m horrible at guitar hero. That’s why these songs are (I’m gonna quote my boi Mason) “aggressively up my [guitar hero] alley”. Fight me.
