Reviews (page 8 of 14)

Probably my favorite of his. Smooth as hell. 7/10

at times ween-esque, very poppy, good vocals

This is Sunday morning spring cleaning music. Open the blinds, open the windows because and it’s just warm enough. The sun peeks through some clouds and you know it’s gonna stay out all day. It’s time to get out the swifter. Really enjoying the Beatles-esque voice meshed with a few electric guitar riffs. Reminds me of Carole King.

Fun! Love the Coconut song.

A couple perfect songs. Well produced.

Jonathon Coulton def was influenced by Nilsson. Show-tunsey. Feel good.

Not much to say, I just like it

I recognize way too many songs from this and never knew who the artist was. Ive learned something today!

Me identifiquei com o álbum, parece algo que eu faria se eu fosse músico. A faixa do coconut foi divertida :P

Not just Lime In Coconut :)

I love a good 70s singer/songwriter record, and this one's right up my alley.

Riktigt gött album alltså. Omslaget går ju inte av för hackor det heller.

70s bop

Put da lime in da coconut.

Jävligt trevligt.

I about lost my shit when Coconut came on. Should have known that Coke wasn’t clever enough to come up with a jingle like that

A nice pop album,but necessary?

Umm, good album. but not really something fascinating or different from anything that was already released ig.

My girlfriend is obsessed with like in the coconut, I don't get it at all.

3 sterne

This plays out like a constant case of whiplash between fairly uninteresting ballad-like tracks, soft folky numbers, utter absurdity like whatever the Coconut song is, and occasional rockers such as the 7 minute "Jump Into The Fire". At the end I was left bemused as to whether I actually liked this or not – probably not enough for a revisit as there's just no rhyme or reason to be found here at all.

More culturally relevant than worthy of musical praise. Lyrics are generally unimaginative and repetitive. But how can you not smile when you hear Coconut? how can you not sing along to Without You?

OMG, I was only familiar with Nilsson because of LCD Soundsystem's cover of Jump Into The Fire, I didn't know that Without You is his song as well! The Coconut song too?? This is such a strange album. It's a unique listen, worthy of the list, wish the other songs had as much staying power as the 3 noticible ones because they don't bridge eachother, it's almost like a compilation album.

I like the album title, but the music was all over the place... "Coconut" was an uncomfortable listen even though I'm familiar with it already. "Without You" is a fairly decent ballad. "Jump into the Fire" is weirdly pretentious. Basically everything else inbetween is just a bit cringeworthy and not particularly musically interesting. Baffled out of 5.

A lot of this album passed me by but Without You and Jump into the Fire are both incredible.

Unique voice, inventive songcraft and a vibe I am on board with. Just found quite a lot of it more impressive than enjoyable enough to want to return.

Nog var det bra..

Mysigt! Coconut är en jävla märklig låt asså

F*lk R*ck but bearable, total insanity

Without “Without you” I wouldn’t like this album all that much

Ihan ok levy ja sopivan pituinen. Tosin ainoa mikä jäi mieleen oli levyn suurin hitti ”Without You”. Nilssonin laulusoundista tykkäsin.

Second half was def better than the first half

Some great starts to songs but they all just dissolve when they start kick off. It feels like there was some big ideas here but someone in a suit said "Gotta fade out now so we can get it on the radio". Such a shame.

Замечательная Without you, добротная Gotta get up и ужасная Coconut. Кокосовая песня стала водоразделом альбома, и после нее он стал звучать ощутимо хуже

I just listened to this album 3 days ago and have already pretty much forgotten it. Still, don't remember hating it while listening.

Nothing really stuck out, but wasn’t a chore to listen to. Standout tracks: Gotta Get Up, Coconut Rating: 2.5

He can sing, and arrange, but it's mostly too drippy and goofy

La primera parte me pareció aburrida, pero la segunda estuvo entretenida. La canción en español fue un gran toque

Pretty good, nothing to blow your socks off

Pretty good album. Never heard them before but it is a treat feels like 80s dreamy but from 1971

The Good: We are foretold that it will be shit! The Bad: Expecting shit, lowered my already low expectations The Ugly: Tomfoolery with Schmilsson… Two listens I gave this album… 2. KenLee is a great song. Coconut Doctor is a great song. The rest… I don’t know. Reading wiki, it seems that Nillson was considered the US Beatles… and when I listened for the second time, I could understand where that consideration comes from. However, it doesn’t mean that I like it… For me, the first part of the album could be skipped… probably side 2 that held my attention the most. 3*

I think this guy's Spotify bio mentions The Beatles more than it mentions him. It's all right. The best song(s) seem to be covers, though Jump into the Fire is pretty good too.

"Without You" was, and remains, one of my favorite songs. With complete surprise I found it here. I found "Without You" completely different musically and lyrically from the rest of the album. I was familiar with "Coconuts" but only the chorus line. Listening to the rest of the lyrics was interesting.

So this is where the lime in the coconut cane from. Nothing else to take home.

Not super my thing? Went in thinking I knew nothing on here and I was like "Oh hey it's the lime in the coconut song." "Gotta Get Up" and "Coconut" were the only real standouts for me here, and the rest wasn't bad just mostly meh.

C'était un peu sans plus je dirais

When this popped up I was like who is this guy. I definitely recognized a few songs and of course the lime in the coconut earworm which I will be singing all weekend. TIL Nilsson wrote the Camp Candy theme song and sang it with John Candy. I skipped around a bit but I'd be happy to put this on anytime.

Interesting album. Easy voice to listen to.

Not bad. Fun, goofy little singer/songrwiter album. Very of its time but not quite my style!

Beatle inspired. A weird mixed bag.

Lullabies for a dad in a Midwestern den, legally distinct Paul Williams, and then there's "Coconut"

Icónico, pero quitando algunas canciones que me han llegado más, no me ha dicho demasiado.

Immediately thought of "Russian Doll" when "Gotta Get Up" came one. Overall it was easy listening and pretty fun. "I'll Never Leave You" was a pretty lame way to end the album though.

A few of these were pretty damn good. I didn’t know he put the lime in the coconut. Overall, good. It’s got some range, a good variation of sound and style. This is the first extended listen of him I’ve done, but he’s friends with Crosby stills Nash and other folks in that class so I have no problems with this. Not everything lands but there’s enough substance to make it worth a look.

A rather silly album (complimentary). Very Beatles-esque at times but maybe that just makes me sound out of touch. The songs that don't stand out really don't but the highlights are often entrancing. Entertaining album albeit one I won't return to often (with exceptions for certain songs)

Better than I thought it would be

This is an impressively varied album, ranging all sorts of styles and genres, especially for 1971. Almost inevitably that equally leads to a range of quality but for the most part this is pretty fun listening at its best when it doesn't take itself too seriously. And there's a couple of really famous tracks on here that you probably didn't realise were Harry Nilsson (I didn't).

I was surprised by how many songs I knew. I especially liked Jump Into the Fire.

Besides the singles, not a fan really. Do enjoy his vocal work however.

decent

I think it's unique in how rapid-fire some of the vocal melodies are in the choruses and otherwise. Even if that is just a specific observation about the first couple tracks when my attention was highest, the vocals were very playful and entertaining throughout the whole album. I think a few tracks could have been left out, but the good ones were good, and there was very strong musicality throughout. The length and my personal circumstances during this album contributed to my loss of focus at points, but I enjoyed what I heard enough to give it a strong 3 to a light 4.

quirky mix of songs. I like that they have different moods it's well-produced. I was never blown-away. But it doesn't seem like Harry was going for something grand. it's laid-back

Harry Nilsson is an artist I can’t quite understand. His music can be genius (I love Gotta Get Up!), maudlin (I hate Without You!), and downright weird (Coconut?!?!?).

Enjoyed overall.

I really loved the use of Gotta Get Up in Russian Doll but not really sure I know any other songs from Harry Nilsson. Oh this has a few songs that I recognize and are definitely classics. Not sure all the other songs are that great, so basically some really good songs mixed with some okay songs. This album feel really hit an miss but the hits really hit and the misses are just okay. I would say this is about a 3.5 for me.

This is sort of B-team Beatles stuff. Not clear to me if that's a complement or a dig. It's fun to listen to, some of the lines are clever, and in general just a sheet full of unspectacular but serviceable pop-rock songs. It also has occasional moments of real brilliance, especially "Jump Into the Fire," which is now in my canon on long-ass rock songs. Don't know whether I'd seek it out again, but wouldn't be upset if I encountered it in the wild. (I did not know "Coconut" was Nillson. I did not enjoy it. B-team Ringo stuff, which I do mean as a dig.)

Good songs but they felt same-y

mitigee mais without you a eu mon coeur sinon pas une grande fan

Yeah it was ok

Some good songs.

This is fine but I won’t remember anything in particular about it.

Diverse, production seems inconsistent? Some good hooks, some really interesting moments. Clearly a talented singer, the song writing is perhaps a bit out there

Not bad. Fun music

okay, interesting sound

Liked it enough, but lacked anything memorable

There are some songs that are not bad, but I would never include this album in this list. 2,5/5.

название прикол поначалу не особо мне зашло но в середине треки уже получше

it's decent. interesting enough to keep me hooked. nice sound.

Nilsson is sometimes good, sometimes annoying, but never truly great

The piano on Gotta Get Up is 100% “oh this is a beatles song” so i was interested to read that Nilsson was another 5th beatle. I recognized Without You and of course Coconut (like borrrrderline racist lmao). meh…ok fine. Jump Into the Fire is legit interesting but not much else here for me.

First 5 songs were much better than the last 5.

Not my favorite, but its cool to see the lime in the coconut song

Felt like a Beatles rip then I saw Lennon helped make this record

HE'S THE PUT THE LIME IN THE COCONUT GUY. What a crazy change of pace from the song before, holy fuck.

Without you and Coconut are okay, the rest didn't do much for me.

Not bad, little bit weird at times. Recognise coconut and without you

Didn’t really care for this. Without You and Coconut I was familiar with, the rest I mostly skipped. “American Beatle” makes sense for the style of music. (3)

Music that was at worse in-offensive and at best delightful. I can understand why this album is one that people talk about and im sure at the time of release was groundbreaking.

Some good tracks, so bland. 2.5

A rare case when the name totally fits the music. Total schmilsson. Doesn’t necessarily mean bad, the guy obviously was talented, it’s just it really could’ve been better if it hadn’t been that much eclectic.

Sure chill

Some lovely tunes, some dreadful lyrics. Feels like the last flowering of 60s flower power.

A great voice and one of the most classic covers of all time!

Put the lime in the coconut

The album cover is top notch. A robe and a pipe....truly one of the best album covers on this list so far. Easy 5 stars for that. The album itself was just fine, but a bit forgettable. 3.5 stars rounded down

Revisit

Boring Boring Boring Wait the coconut song? Cool Boring Boring boring

Album as a whole is pretty solid. Nice easy listening. I was so excited when Without You started up, considering it’s my favorite Badfinger song… well that excitement vanished quickly. What a dreadful cover. Then I found out that this mawkish imposter is the version that is highly celebrated???? What a world.

First couple songs are heaters and my guess is Without You inspires a lot of strong opinions both ways. Doesn't feel like there is a lot of substance to this album as a whole, however.

There are couple of recognizable decent jams on here ("Gotta Get Up", Coconut"), but this album feels like a pale imitation of a variety of better acts (2.5)

Silly man with his silly songs

this was nice, but i wouldn't really play it again

Meh. 2.8

en stark 3a! har en så svag punkt för Harry Nilsson, och flera låtar på det här albumet jag verkligen älskar, men också ganska många låtar som inte lämnar ett så starkt intryck

Well this is an eclectic mix. Obviously knew he did “without you” but wasn’t expecting the limey coconut one right after. Very random compilation of styles. Quite enjoyable if a bit bizarre

it's fun, it was some bangers, but it really lost me at "without you", thank god "coconut" is the very next song

My rating 3.4. This was a surprise. You may have known the song but didn’t know the artist

that coconut song is soo bad

It’s a nice enough collection of songs, even if it’s hard to believe Coconut is a real song. His version of Without You is pretty good but ultimately I don’t think I’m in my 40s enough to fully enjoy this.

Better than just the guy who did a lame cover of without you

Enjoyed the album but didn't love it. Only song I've heard on this album was Coconut for some reason.

Pretty damn cool...was just hoping for more "Jump In The Fire" type jams but that's not here. This is somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for me. I get it, I get why people like this...I'm just not sure if I'd go back to this on my own. Totally get it and respect it though.

Popero a gusto

6.1/ 10

Not bad, two absolute classic songs with standard 1970 rock/pop fillers to make up the album. Much better albums were released in this period I feel.

Pretty fun album. Never heard of this guy, but once you listen you realise you've heard a few songs heaps of times. Pretty solid collection here, just a few tunes that sound a little same-y.

2 class tracks on here, reminds me of my dads music - coconut, and without you - I just read up about him, cool

"Jump Into the Fire" a classic GoodFellas tune. Not much else of note and an overall hodgepodge of songs.

typical for its time, doesn't take itself too seriously. that bassline on jump into the fire is incredible though! 3.5/5

Listened to on my Apple EarPods. This was quite an interesting album. I've never heard of Harry Nilsson before--at least until 'Coconut' came on and I thought "wait, this guy made that song?" Although Coconut comes in as the most 'bizzare' song on the album, it is representative of the feel of the album on the whole. It has the baroque pop-rock foundation, but Nilsson often runs with unconventional ideas within the tracks, which really helps the album out from blending in to any number of similar sounding albums of the time. Because, yes, this album does have a "yeah, I'm familiar with this kinda music" vibe throughout, as songs fall right in line with what my mom played for me growing up. As a matter of fact, I often found the lyricism to be the weakest part of the album, with a lot of pretty milquetoast dives into love. However, it really is the unique music ideas, structures, and vocal performance from Harry Nilsson that elevates this into a good listen. Though I found myself unimpressed by the lyrics themselves, Nilsson never fails to deliver his writing in earnest and expressive ways, with belting yells and soft whines that are just great in terms of emotion. Beyond his vocal performance, he has a lot of good song ideas, like 'Early in the Morning' which is a blues cover on electric organ, breathing new life into a old track. I also found myself impressed with 'Jump into the Fire', which sees Nilsson explode into some heavy duty rock with a real punk feel, running long with an extended drum solo section at the end that helps the whole song feel electrifying. 'The Moonbeam Song' is so soft and smooth, and 'Without You' has probably the best vocal performance of the album, even if I don't really like the lyrics themselves. Whether it's stripped back minimal blues like in 'Early in the Morning' or the orchestral 'Without You', Nilsson showcases a diverse range of creativity on the tracks here, and this range also works to highlight how it is truly in service of what the track needs. He's not afraid to layer up plenty of instruments, but he knows when to pull it back as well, or when to just let the drums and guitar rock your out of your seat. The album is also pretty succinct, with 10 tracks coming in at just 35 minutes, which is right around the sweet zone for me in terms of album length. However, there was a lingering feeling of songs not knowing quite how to resolve, as they often faded out rather than culminating into something with closure. Still, this album is a really solid listen all around. Barring the weak endings and lyricism, Nilsson is a great vocal performer, and the tracks are varied and interesting.

Increíble hit se había mandado este tipo y ni sabía quién era. Entretenido album, muy bueno para el 1971. 6/10

Style-wise, it's all over the place, but there's a lot to enjoy if you dig in. Without You is the obvious one - the mega-hit, originally by Apple Records/ Mal Evans prodigies, Badfinger, is a fine vehicle for Nilsson's incredible voice, but Gotta Get Up and Coconut might also be familiar to many from the Reservoir Dogs and Russian Doll soundtracks respectively, where they're used wonderfully. These three songs alone are so weirdly different from one another, it's just bizarre that they should be by the same person, never mind appear on the same album. I like a bit of Nilsson, but the quality is patchy to say the least - he's another one of those artists that's probably more enjoyable to read about than to listen to. His relationship with John Lennon, especially during the latter's 'lost weekend' period makes for facinating reading and is enough to put you off alcohol for life. Beyond the well-known songs here, tracks like Driving Along and Down also stood out for me. I like that big, piano-led, brassy sound that Lennon also drew on in his solo albums - you can hear the influence they clearly had on each other. With a bit of context, this record makes for an interesting listen but as a standalone album in isolation, it probably won't be on high rotation for many.

Pleasantly surprised! Coconut after Without You is fucking mental. 3.5 stars.

I'd never heard the entire album at the time it came out, but of course I know "Without You" (a.k.a. "Ken Lee," for those of us who spend too much time on the internet), and "Coconut," both from Top 40 radio when this record first came out. "Without You" I can do without, but "Coconut" was fun. Early in the Morning, his cover of an Afro-Cuban song from the 1940s, had nice simple instrumentation. It got me to dig up the original on YouTube, which I'll admit I prefer, but Nilsson's version was a good take on the original. Favorite track: "Jump into the Fire," with its manic jam at the end. I hear this song way more often nowadays than I ever did in the 70s, which is fine with me. "We can make each other happy! We can make each other happy! We can make each other happy!"

kind of insane? not sure if i mean this as a compliment either, some good stuff here but some REALLY baffling stuff too

I like the A-side more than the B-side. I didn't know he was lime in the coconut guy.

Listening to this back to back with Mott felt like an extended single album, though I would say Nilsson had a few more high points. Still a 3, tho.

Meh. Once I got to Can't Live Without You, I knew it was time to turn it off.

3/5 - If ever an album was more of a 3, I have not yet heard it. Competent, post-Beatles era tunes that are mostly decent except for the dreadful Coconut, but I’m never gonna be like, “Yeah, I need to hear some Harry Nilsson right now.” Props for the bath robe on the album cover, though.

Couple of good songs. Especially considering 'Gotta Get Up'

I like this album but not more than average other than Without You, which has always been one of my favorite songs.

A good listen. A little sleepy at times but some gems, like early in the morning

Good, I like Harry Nilssons voice. Some songs were weird, but overall a pleasant album.

This probably should have been a 4 but Coconut is so god-awful stupid I can't stand it

Not really my jam, but listenable enough

This was both goofy and pretty good. Enjoyable listen but probably not something I would return to

It reminded me a lot of the Beatles. Interesting and okay, i hated the coconut song though.🍂

the second half of the album is definitely the more creative, experimental and interesting one. other than that, it was just pretty okay. also, Coconut coming right after Without You is one of the most hilarious thing i've seen in an album

If McCartney had an understudy he would sound like this.

A fine album. I like the sounds but it didn't stir much in me. I was stunlocked when I heard 'Coconut'...the Lime Coke ads tormented me in the past and I never knew it was a real song.

beatles? sorry. beatles? i like to imagine that this guy listened to the beatles and was like "fuck British people, we can do this" and subsequently kind of did do it! for that reason alone, i will rate it highly, as I too hate British people. good on you, harry nilson.

the whole time i was listening to this i was trying to remember why tf i know the name Harry Nilsson. The opening song grabbed me and pulled me in so hard i got super excited, but then i got hit with some back to back sleepers. eventually, i got to Coconut and realized "oh THAT'S why i know this guy's name" and then i felt dumb for not realizing what that song was just by seeing the name. ultimately, the songs on here that are fun are really fun, but the others weren't doing much for me. i think Gotta Get Up was my favorite here, but unfortunately it's the first song you're done with. everything's a 3

I’d never listened to this album in full before and found it to be good if a bit of a mixed bag. When I loaded up this album, I already had 2 songs from it in my Liked songs and nothing made me feel compelled to add more. I like it when it’s pop-forward. If we drafted songs from the albums we’ve gotten thus far, “Without You” should go first round, because it’s one of the most immaculately perfect pieces of music ever created. So then I get more than a little frustrated that it’s sharing disc space with Generic Blues Song 444628472 (“Early In the Morning”). Nilsson gets called the American Beatle and I know it’s a relationship thing more than anything else but like Pet Sounds exists

Hopping in the car, running a few behind for a lunch date with Emily and “Gotta Get Up” starts playing to roast my ass about being late. It’s a great song though, one that I heard countless times in the Natasha Lyonne’s show Russian Doll, where it plays each time she restarts her day in the Groundhog Day time loop. Loved the psych rock sounds of Jump Into The Fire, Coconut is totally unexpected and goofy, and some love songs round this out as a pretty dynamic album. Really enjoyed this one!

The only song I knew of Harry Nilsson’s was Everybody’s Talkin. I enjoyed this album, and thought there were some solid songs. It goes from poppy folk, relaxed 70s male guitar, to more soulful. Songs like Down and Early in the Morning surprised me in terms of Nilsson’s vocal range and sheer capacity to make such different powerful music, I was impressed. Naturally I’m not the biggest fan of some of the more ballad type songs but they have a place nonetheless. Coconut as a song is wild and bizarre. Jump into the fire has some more 50s swing rock influence. But all in all, I enjoyed.

very beetles-ey, 7/10!

He has a lovely voice. Not a fan of a lot of the songs.

Cool album Standout songs: Early in the morning Jump into the fire

Pese a su gran voz no me acaba de convencer. Canciones muy irregulares. Muy buena producción.

Fora album, nisam pojma imala da je Without you njegova stvar! Nisu mi sve stvari napete, neke su i obrade, ali sve u svemu, nije mi smetalo slušati cijeli album 3/5, 6/10

Generally pleasant not my favorite tho

Never heard an album so perfectly encapsulated by such a stupid title. It’s like a 5/10 but I’m giving it 3 stars so I feel less bad about giving something 2 stars later

1001 albums to hear before you Schmilsson 75# Quirky Elton John. Really nice! I heard Gotta Get Up on a random Netflix show called Russian Doll with the concept of dying and returning to a point in time over and over, and this song appeared every time the character died. That summer I was hooked on it For it to be released on 1971, it's impressing what this man had to offer of pop at such an early stage. After listening to the R.E.M. album, this is much more up my alley than the jangle rock. But R.EM. was more consistent on making great passages and hooks. Some songs on this get lost on ideas that don't stick. I think this one has more character, it isn't afraid to sound weird.

Nytt bekjentskap. Pop rock. Har nok hørt den mest populære låta, Without You, tidligere. Dette er nok også den beste låta, mens de øvrige sangene er av litt varierende kvalitet. Et par artige låter i Early in the Morning og Coconut. Hele albumet i seg selv har i grunn en noe absurd karakter. Gjør seg fortjent til sånn cirka tre og en halv stjerner. Runder ned. Top 3: Without You, Early in the Morning, Gotta Get Up

okayisch

Oh the 70s. Great listen.

Could take it or leave it

Hit after hit on this thing. Love the songs in isolation, but I don’t think they work as a cohesive listening experience (hence the 3). Still a big fan of Nilsson though.

Wait, there's seriously albums called Oedipus Schmoedipus AND Nilsson Schmilsson? Maybe schm-reduplication was a phenomenon of the past and people just aren't doing it anymore. Wild. Anyway, this is a great album cover, because this guy looks like me (sleepy) and the font is really good. I do know the Lime in the Coconut song (thanks to Kermit Thee Frog), but I think that's it. Oh, no, I knew 'Gotta Get Up' from Russian Doll, too. Great energy. 'Without You' has familiar lyrics but the song itself doesn't seem familiar, and it's kinda 80s (derogatory). Like a bad Journey song. 'Coconut' is super weird, honestly. Exotica is right. I don't like it. Bring back Kermit! Bring back 'Coconut Telegraph'! The absurdity of a doctor telling you to do whatever you did to cause the problem you're asking about does speak to me, though. I'm coming around to it. At first I was leaning 4 or maybe even 5, but my feelings about this album were kinda like: 📉 (bottoming out at 3, but still). I wonder if I listened to this backwards if my rating would be a 4 instead. An experiment for another decade, perhaps. Highlight: 'Gotta Get Up'

Someone wrote it’s like John Lennon and Paul McCartney were the same person.. yeah that fits.

Lime in de coconut

so nostalgic, I was obsessed with coconut as a child to the point where I would request my 2nd grade teacher to play it in class every friday, when she'd take song requests, at some point she told me that she had actually played the song at her wedding reception, I still have no idea if she was lying to me or not but i'll never forget maestra gagnon.

bastante animadillo mola

Had no idea Mariah Carey's "Without You" was a cover, nor this was where the "Coconut" song came from

"Coconut" has become such a parody of itself that it was hard to listen to this with fresh ears. But I didn't hate it.

Same criticism I've used before - too many of the tracks seem to fade out before they can breath. I liked nearly all the songs - the exception being "Coconut", always hated that one - but seriously, 5 or 6 songs in before anything runs over 3 minutes. "Jump Into the Fire" is the only one that kept going long enough for me to really get in to it.

Didn't love it but didn't hate it.

Really liked jump into the fire. Obviously without and coconut are excellent. Strong finish

early in the morningi begendim ama dinler miyim emin degilim. without you da guzeldi.

Pleasantly surprised by this. Lots of Beatles vibes, Without You is a banger.

Good stuff actually! Interesting to read about the guy.

pretty nice and chill. muscially good, not too annoying

Really weird, but interesting. What a wild collection of songs.

Geweldige hit met Without You, verder een vrolijke Supertramp vibes

So much more pleasant and recognisable than I’d first thought.

Quirky but no big hit

Yeah, alright.

Plus one for without you Minus one for the lime in the coconut

A brilliant album from start to finish. Great songs, outstanding playing.

It's kind of ironic that one of John Lennon's post Beatles best buddies sounded very much like his former band mate Paul McCartney. Harry Nilsson had great voice but to me he could have benefitted from better songwriting (partners). There are few good pop tracks on this and 'Jump into the fire' is a standout one

Eclectic mix of genres - folk, blues, honky-tonk? Just a bit odd. Oh this has Without You ("Can't live if living is without you") and Coconut ("put the lime in the coconut"). Such famous tracks, very different, and sequential in the album! Otherwise nothing much is grabbing my attention. Best track - Gotta Get Up, Early in the Morning 3 stars, but a low 3

A decent album after a couple of stinkers. It probably sounded better than it is because of the aforementioned double-whammy I experienced. 'Ken Lee' is obviously a classic, before being butchered by all the wannabe warblers, but some of the other tracks were also pretty good. I think 3 stars is about right.

eh pretty cool i guess

Easy, low impact chill rock that's an easy listen. He incorporates a lot of instruments into the songs without overloading them, i'm usually more of a fan when wind instruments are in or piano. Just seems like a guy who likes making fun little songs. Gotta Get Up, Coconut and Jump into the Fire are good ones.

was not familiar with harry nilsson before listening to this, so was surprised to recognize some of his songs. fine 3 stars

Some classics on here—a bit of ‘70s pop, a bit of Beatles, some good variation overall.

14/20 Album qui s'écoute assez bien. Des musiques assez sympa comme Down, mais aussi des musiques oubliables. Ça reste plutôt une bonne découverte, bien que l'album reste un peu daté.

Nilsson Schmilsson... who gives a piss? Nah, I'm kidding. That's just the kind of self-deprecating vibe that the album's name gives off. This album's not half-bad. Apparently the Beatles really liked this guy and I can kinda see why. I mean, this album has an instance of insane tonal whiplash that would make the White Album jealous. Let's talk about that for a bit actually. Song 6 on this album is called "Without You" and it's genuinely kind of beautiful. It is a cover, but Harry Nilsson's version has arguably become the definitive rendition of the song. It's either that or Mariah Carey's version. But yeah, this song is excellent. The piano is nice, Harry's vocals are stunning for that one part in the chorus, and the energy makes the message hit even harder. It's just a wonderful power ballad and I love it. That song is immediately followed by "Coconut," an annoying novelty song about putting the lime in the coconut and drinking them both up. The tonal whiplash between these two songs may genuinely the most insane thing I've heard on any one of these albums and I kind of admire it in a sick, twisted way. But yeah, "Coconut" is definitely a little annoying, but that's, like, the point, right? I can't hate a song that's actively trying to be annoying too much, right? I will say that it's pretty funny to see people on this site realizing that the song at the end of Reservoir Dogs is real and comes from this album, but I myself had my own situation similar to this where I just now found out that this was the musical inspiration for the "Peeps in the chili pot" bit from The Good Place. Very funny scene from a phenomenal show, I must say. If you haven't seen The Good Place by now, what are you even doing with your life? Go watch it, trust me. So, that was funny. As far as the rest of the album goes, it kind of hovers around this "good, but not great" range that I can't hate at all. There are other nice songs like "Gotta Get Up" and "Jump Into the Fire" but the album at large doesn't leave as much of an impact as I'd maybe like it to. Nothing in here is bad, aside from perhaps the one song. Harry Nilsson's a decent songwriter and vocalist. The instrumentalists all do well enough. I like the album, okay? It's got some weird things that I'm not entirely in favor of, but I can see the appeal. If nothing else, I at least got a bit of a laugh out of it. High 3/5.

This should be right up my alley and ,for the most part, it is. Very McCartney-esque songwriting. I just don’t like Coconut and think novelty songs like it ultimately drag the overall quality of albums down. Favorite songs were Gotta Get Up, Driving Along, Down, and Jump Into The Fire.

A fun listen for sure. Little scattered and the production sounds dated here and there, but Nillson is a skilled songwriter, which shines though those quibbles.

I like the playfulness. But didn’t end up with strong feelings.

Bro thought he could make the white album

It was okay. Songwriting was fine and some of the songs were fun. “Coconut” is the famous track, but it’s silly. 3/5 Might listen again

A CAN LIIIIIIIIIIIIII great song

I don't think I've heard this record as a whole since I was in grade school. I like this overall, though the more bluesy tracks on side A don't do much for me. Without You isn't my favorite ballad either, but Harry is fully sending the high harmony in the second chorus, so I have to give it props for that; guess that's the way you win a Grammy. Lackluster tracks aside, the rest of the album is fun enough to keep me coming back. 3.4/5

Good album. Nothing crazy.

Pretty good, really not my style of music. But at least i know where lime and coconut comes from now

Some great moments and I was surprised by how much of it I recognized. But I also thought some of it was boring

This album is tough to rate because the opening track is SO strong ("Gotta Get Up"). I also recognized several songs from the album that have been meme-ified over the years ("Without You" and "Coconut"). All from an artist I had no name recognition for. That being said, because of the memed nature I just don't see myself taking this album seriously in the future because the standout track came and went so quickly.

Parts of this were enjoyable but overall it wasn’t a memorable album. I did like Jump Into the Fire but I don’t have much else to say about it. 5.5/10.

This is exactly why I use this generator: An artist who made 1 song I knew beforehand actually made a bretty solid album. It doesn't reinvent the wheel but it's perfectly fine Rock music. Best songs are Gotta Get Up and Coconut (Without you is very much overrated). 7/10, a practical baseline.

This is the most Beatles album I’ve ever heard by a non-Beatle. I don’t remember where I heard Gotta Get Up before, but it’s a very fitting opener to the album. The rest just really reminded me of the Beatles, but if the band was actually just a single guy. Not a bad thing, but with only a quarter of the members, the album only makes a few truly memorable songs.

'Without You' to 'Coconut' has got to be one of the most jarring song transitions in popular music. How sad that both songwriters of 'Without You' ended up killing themselves. Fuck Stan Polley.

I knew the name Harry Nilsson years before I ever heard a single song because of his connections with The Beatles (all big fans) especially with John Lennon during Lennon's notorious lost week-end- they pal-ed around, drank half of Los Angeles, put tampons on each other's foreheads, etc. Funny stuff. I guess. I finally heard a song by Nilsson when I saw Midnight Cowboy (one of my favorite movies) called Everybody's Talkin' and I loved it. I got the single played it to death then forgot all about it. A few years later I heard a couple albums by Nilsson (one being The Point, the other I don't recall, B&W album cover) I liked them OK I currently have a Greatest Hits CD by Nilsson that I don't recall how I got it- I doubt I played it more than a couple times. Nilsson Schmilsson at least on paper sounds like something I would really love what with all The Beatles connections (Klaus Voormann plays bass on it!) but dammit I just don't. I feel like a traitor - The Beatles (all of them!) loved this man- frustrating! I really wanted to love it, but I will have to settle and be thankful that at least I don't hate it. Not much to hate here really. Ten inoffensive songs. Ten little indians. Folky, soft rock (Jump Into the Fire rocks harder than the other 9 songs), tin pan alley influenced stuff, supposedly funny/witty lyrics or plain old goofy as in the song Coconuts (you put the lime in...) you get the idea. Not much to love either to be honest at least on this album to these ears. I'll revisit Harry Nilsson's stuff someday. There is something there but it's not doing a whole lot for me. At least not yet.

7/10 - Feels like a perfect 3.5 to me.

I really like a few of the songs on here (Gotta Get Up, Without You) , most of the others are good, and then there's Coconut. I don't know how this song is on the album, it's so annoying and the fake accent is jarring to say the least. Light 7/10

You put the lime in the coconut

Super strong opening track, but the rest of it was a bit too slow for my taste.

I was surprised that this one. I did not have high hopes, but I mostly enjoyed the album. There were a few songs that I already knew and overall I felt it had a pretty cool vibe.

Felt like this album was ahead of its time for some reason.

This is the type of artist that you know because you’ve watched a lot of movies. There are some classic songs on here like coconut and without you that gets played in movies constantly but you don’t really know the artist or at least I don’t so he’s doomed to be known as musician that makes movie soundtracks you make moments for movies but we forget your music solid album. I think it deserves more love.

He did this song AND that song?! It’s remarkable that the same person wrote Without You and Coconut; I do recall his name because on many occasions have I sought out Coconut because frankly, I love that song thanks to Reservoir Dogs. The first half of this album is fairly forgettable but the back end is pretty good, and the penultimate song, Jump into the Fire is very good, although a minor complaint is that it should have been the closer.

Had some real bangers and some real shockers, enjoyed it still

kind of weird and wacky but had fun!

Ну ок, одну песню я где-то слышал. Но я от неё не в восторге, как и от всего альбома

The songs sound relaxing and the instrumentation is beautiful.

Ehhh aside from the odd funny song or two, this didn't do much for me

I enjoyed this. I knew three songs. I knew Gotta Get Up from the show Russian Doll. They played the start of that song about a thousand times in that show. I knew Without You which I think is a pretty song. I also knew Coconut which just made me want to watch Practical Magic.

Without You is a great song. The rest of the album has variety, but it's basically just ok and a little boring. Except Coconut which is ridiculous instead of boring.

Everyone knows this album, even if you don't know this album. Ol' Harry was a well known composer who did the soundtrack for Magnolia, Contact, Punch Drunk Love, and Goodfellas and his songs were on dozens of films, most famously with "Everybody's Talkin'" in Midnight Cowboy (1969), "Coconut" in Reservoir Dogs (1992), and his soundtrack work for Popeye (1980). Other notable uses include "Jump Into the Fire" in Goodfellas and "The Puppy Song" in You've Got Mail. The opening song, Gotta Get Up, was heavily featured in Russian Doll, the Natasha Lyonne show. If you haven't seen this, go start it now. I'll wait. Also, Harry had kind of a rough go of it and died of a heart attack at 52. Cass Elliot AND Keith Moon died in his London apartment. On different days. He was friends with some of the Beatles. He was born in Brooklyn and moved to L.A. At least one of his songs was about his dad heading out for cigarettes and never coming back. He had three marriages and 7 kids. All his money was embezzled by Cindy Sims, who stole multiple millions of dollars from many clients. He already had a bad heart, but this exacerbated his existing heart issues, and probably led to his death. For a guy who wrote such peppy songs, shit was rough all around for him. And let me be clear - the melody on the songs is very Leonardo Di Caprio skipping and then listening to the words, it's very "Harry? You okay, bud?" Driving along you can see all the people Who seem to have nothing to say to each other Each day they grow farther and farther away from each other Driving along you can spot all the problems On faces so tired of facing each other Each day they grow farther and farther away from each other Driving along at fifty seven thousand miles an hour Look at those people standing on the petals of a flower Look at those petals bumping for a little bit of power Driving along you can see all the people Who seem to have nothing to say to each other Each day they grow farther and farther away from each other Overall, this is probably a 3.5 out of 5, but now that I *really* listened to the lyrics, I don't think I need to hear this again, thanks. Standout: Without You. This song is rough, but it's a classic breakup song and it's really good - even if it's miserable.

Do I like the Coconut song, or do I hate it? Maybe I will never know.

The music industry in '70s USA must have been quite something. So much wealth flowing through the economy, so many people buying records, the big record companies could fund singer-songwriters like Schmilsson to release multiple records, even ones with cry-for-help cover pics like this one. Who is he again? Oh yeah, he's the "Without You" one. (Not "Everything I Own", that was Bread, completely different!). The first two songs I Liked (ie enough to play again) were Without You, and Let the Good Times Roll, ie the first two songs written by others. (Coconut was kinda interesting, but I'm gonna need a ten foot pole to engage with anything sung in a "Caribbean accent" by a North American etc.) But then Jump Into The Fire was pretty interesting! So what do I say overall? The album is not uninteresting - the multi-tracking vocals is decent and apparently was kinda path-breaking. So I'll say Not Bad, 6/10.

Really enjoyed this

Did not know that coconut came from this album and artist but it makes sense. This was decent with some memorable moments like the first song which was used prominently in Russian Doll. But all in all not exciting enough to wow me

Classic

Not bad but it didn’t stand out

wist niet dat can't live if living is "without you" van hem was coconut is catchy.. redelijk funky album maar geen genre-defining album denk ik

You put the lime in the what??

Just rewatched Midnight Cowboy which of course has the superhit Nilsson song Everybody's Talking so this was a nice bit of kismet. Late 60s/early 70s audiences didn't know how good they had it with singer-songwriter stuff. Nilsson, Bacharach, Randy Newman, BJ Thomas, Hal David, Phil Ochs...it's just hit after hit after hit with these guys. Nilsson Schmilsson's pretty great because it's this collection of very Beatles inflected pop structures but because Nilsson's a weirdo, it starts to wander off into stranger directions like (the now overplayed (or maybe it was just my dad) but back then, really bizarre) Coconut. Favorite Tracks: Driving Along, The Moonbeam Song, Down, Jump Into The Fire

Me resultó más interesante de lo esperado

Without You , temazo.

Noen klassikere!

Really a pretty album. Not quite what I was expecting, not the most singer/songwriter album you could imagine, there's some character to it. Without You takes the cake, even though Coconut is pretty fun. Pretty fine album all around. 3.5/5.

+Gotta Get Up +Without You +Coconut

Good calming music

Had no idea who this was, then the first bars of "Gotta Get Up" played and I at least recognized that one. Driving Along, Early in the Morning, The Moonbeam Song, and Down these were all nice but didn't stick with me. Without You is a classic, though I'm partial to the Air Supply cover and didn't really feel like this cover did much with it, but maybe without this cover's popularity we wouldn't have gotten Air Supply's version. Coconut is another familiar though I think mostly from cultural reference rather than ever actually hearing it played. Let the Good Times Roll, another cover I again don't feel he did much to improve on the original. Jump Into the Fire, extended instrumental break felt a little much I'll Never Leave You was fine for a treacly album closer. Overall, this feels like middle of the road 70s pop and while I went ahead and added Gotta Get Up to the library nothing else here was interesting enough to save for another listen. I did listen to Air Supply's Without You a few times though.

I only knew Harry Nilsson as the "lime in the coconut" guy, but he's got a lot more going on. These are short, peppy, well-written songs that play with lyrics and rhythm in a delightful way. It's a very '70s album, but a very good one.

It was a nice listen.

This was inoffensive but felt bit genric maybe due to how much 70s we’ve had recently, Nilsson Schmilsson is a good album name though

Always liked Nilsson's radio singles, Everybody's Talking is an all-time top 10 for me, lesser but good are Without You and Jump into the Fire on this one, and how can you possibly not like Coconut? But... never listened to a whole Nilsson album, or noticed how much he sounds like a Beatle on some tracks, good call.

Probably the best album name of all time.

Who could forget about Harry Nilsson's greatest contribution to popular culture: 'Ken lee.......tulibu dibu douchooo.....'

Pretty cool, cool production and singing and some cool covers. Best tracks: without you and coconut.

Seems like a cluster of great songs I've heard in many different contexts without a clue they formed a whole called an album. The whole works though when listened to in sequence.

Não é o meu estilo. Gostei da The Moonbeam Song

Grande Banger romântico Without you. A parte disso não teve momentos memoráveis

The good songs are really good! The rest of them are a bit more ho-hum and the piano sounds a lot alike from one song to the next. But still quite enjoyable.

Good album! A bit of George Harrisonish ;)

Nothing special but deserving the 3 stars.

Listening to it instantly takes me back to that era. Artists like Fleetwood Mac. The Vocals are warm and pleasing. Nothing flashy, but perfectly suited. Harmonies hit in all the right places reminds me of the Beach Boys at times. I love the production choices. Early in the Morning pairs a chill instrumental with medium-to-higher vocals. The Moonbeam Song goes softer. Sometimes the lyrics blend so deep into the production they almost drown not in a bad way, just becoming part of the whole texture. This is the kind of album that reveals itself over multiple listens. Without You is my favourite track, even though I kept hearing Mariah the whole time.

Somehow the album cover fits the music perfectly. This music is charmingly relaxed. Some excellent songs - "Jump Into the Fire" is incredible. "Without You" is one of the first and best power ballads. The rest is very solid pop music. THREE STARS

Oh! This is THAT guy. Nice. Following Without You with Coconut is hillarious.

oh that's who that is

Another nice and warm sounding album from the 70s. This era is quickly becoming one of my favourites just for the sound of the recordings alone. Interesting songs and arrangements here. I don’t know much about Harry Nilsson but I definitely want to hear more from him so I’ll have to get into his discography.

I forgot about some of these songs and never knew where they came from. Good album which I now realize was the background of my childhood.

i don't have much to say about this album. it was a nice listen, though i don't see myself revisiting most of the songs besides without you. 3 / 5 stars

this is the funniest album art and title of all time and the music all being the most soulful 70s pop ballads i've ever heard only adds to that

Not what I was expecting after knowing ¨Everybody's Talking At Me.¨ A good, kinda weird album, except for the Coconut song. Lame.

this one is fine. I'm not sure I'll really come back to it much, but I don't mind it. My favorite songs were probably "Driving Along" and "Moonbeam Song" I cannot for the life of me figure out where I've heard "Coconut" before. I feel like it was on a cartoon, like Adventure Time or something but idk

Yeh it’s nice, without you is good with English and Spanish which bumps this up to 3, otherwise it’s nice.

уе харашо

I found this album to be very eclectic and unique. It went from a sitcom-esque approach to a song to deeply emotional expositions. I liked this more than I thought but I don't think I would be very motivated to revisit it in it's entirety again.

6/10 Putting Beatle style orchestration ona song don't make you a Beatle. Surely that's obvious. Writing an ending to your songs would help. Makes sense Badfinger (ultimate weak Beatles pastiche band) wrote the big hit here It's fine, just a bit novelty and weak. And Mariah Carey RUINED Without You, and it has taken 30 years for me to be able to listen to this version.

Favorite Track: Gotta Get Up

Chill. Fun vibes.

Best album yet.

Not really into this album but I'll round up to 3 just for "Coconut". 2.5

what do you put in the coconut again?

This is a good 70’s pop-rock album. Love the use of organ and mellotron. Nilsson has a great voice. An enjoyable album, much better than many pop records of the era, but maybe a little overrated? Regardless, I’m glad I got to spend some time with this record.

We get the theme song from Russian Doll on Groundhog Day? This randomizer is really fucking with me. As Felicia Anton (z"l) used to say, it's all linked up. Why don't I appreciate Nilsson more? Because of Without You and Lime in the Coconut, that's why. I'm giving a 4 to side 1 and a 2 to side 2 for an average of 3, which feels low but the bad songs sure are bad.

The American Beatle!

This had some good songs and some not so good ones. It was worthy listen but didn’t get me too tingly.

A kind of fun album. Not really my thing though. Did not really speak to me.

"Without You" is a beautiful song. I find the whole album more of the same.

Really solid record, liked the album tracks more than the “hits” for the most part.

I’ve heard of this artist but don’t think I’ve heard any of his music. Cool stuff though.

70s era singer English songwriter. It's fun and well written. Totally see how this landed in the list. Glad I listened to it, but might not be someone I'll gravitate to again in the near future.

TIL he was the lime in the coconut originator. Some of the other covers were interesting. Overall kinda bland music though.

I never thought I'd find the original version of "Paulinha" here today. BRAZIL MENTIONED! viva Calcinha Preta!

This is good quality music - but it doesn't quite hit my mark. I do love campy, comedic, unserious music. But something doesn't quite vibe in here with me. There are a lot of good moments, especially in the first half. The first four songs are a nice liseten, The Moonbeam Song was very cute, Coconut is ridiculous, and the rest kinda feels weird. Vocals are just about as strong as I've heard so far on this journey. He has awesome control, grit, and a nice tone. I didn't hear a single sour note in here. 5/5 vocals. Production is pretty basic; good, but nothing special. I enjoyed hearing the sound of the organ keys clacking almost creating a beat in Early in the Morning. I appreciate the instrument combinations in here, e.g. the strings and brass, even if it's not all my cup of tea. It's a cohesive work, if not a bit of a drag. The album cover and title really pulls it home. I feel like its a decent 2.8/5. Will be revisiting a couple songs most likely.

6.5/10

Fantastyczny tytuł albumu, to po pierwsze. Fajna okładka, to po drugie. Piękne wykonanie "Without You", to po trzecie. "Coconut" też mega, przezabawny kawałek. That being said, to jest dla mnie 3,5, ale pewnie nie będę wracał do tego albumu, biorąc pod uwagę, ile innych rzeczy jest do przesłuchania.

Definitely has some hits, but I’m not a huge fan.

A surprisingly high number of bangers in here.

A lot of stuff came from him that I didnt realize! Very Beatles

Excellent voice, Without you is an excellent ballad. Other surprising good songs, although not in my taste of music.

Como puede ser la misma persona la que canta "without you" (y encima se la canta en español tambien) que "coconut". Un album muy dibertido

Without You is one of the all-time classic power ballads, a really great song. Nilsson also did Everybody’s Talking (though it’s not on this album) and that’s also one for the ages. He didn’t write either song though. The material on Nilsson Schmilsson (great title) isn’t up to those kinds of standards. It’s ok, and there are some nice songs, but it’s not stellar, at least to me.
