Just liked it
Enjoyable pop album-although the back half has the hits, I found myself enjoying the front half slightly more. Impressed by the variety and creativity. Not much to say, just a solid experience all around. Will say coconut really has not aged well. Favorites include Gotta Get Up, the excellent Moonbeam Song, and Jump Into the Fire.
I knew more songs than I expected
I didn't have any expectations going into this album, but was surprised by the quality. It's not the top most memorable record, but definitely an enjoyable one for me. Pretty varied as well.
3.5 stars. Musically this is interesting. Wandering folk at times catchy and at times trippy. Goofy lyrics that knock the seriousness don't really align with the impressive instrumental writing. Standout is the piano-drive "Gotta Get Up"
Pretty fun album, romantic song and a fun one with lime in the coconut.
Was not really feeling the first 5 tracks of the album, but the 2nd half was very strong. 'Without You' is a beautiful love song, 'Coconut' is also a classic and I liked 'Jump Into The Fire'. 4/5
Pleasantly surprised by this! Never heard of Harry Nilsson before, but the whole album held up very well. Also sounds very well produced and sounds great to me! Perhaps a weak 4, as there aren't any particular songs that I can say "I really like that one", but all of them were simply pretty good!
Am i stuck at wedding in Palm Spring doomed to repeat the same day over and over?! After having no clue who Harry Nilsson is, I was surprised to here to the song from Palm Springs. Not only that but after wondering where I've heard "Jump into the fire" I found out it's in Goodfellas! Such a weird album, after the very good and "såsig" ballad of "Without you" comes "Coconut" with a fake Jamaican dialect?!?! This album kept me on my toes and it was never boring it has many tracks with potential to become favorites
Album you need to listen to a few times since it sounds like it's 3-4 different artists made it. I always enjoy listening to it.
For probably the second time in this challenge, I had to listen to an album almost immediately after finishing it. I had no idea that some of these songs were the same person let alone on the same album. I think, with more listening, that this one could seriously become a 5 for me, but it's not quite there yet. It's an eclectic collection of songs, but it somehow all works.
Nilsson is one of those classic songwriters that I knew would be all over this list, like Paul Simon. Can’t remember if we had another from him yet? This one’s pretty great though, some really nice tracks. Loved the opener, and of course we all know “Coconut,” I had no idea it was his song though. Lana Del Rey mentions one of his songs on her new album, kind of a cool coincidence on the timing, but that track isn’t on this one. Still, I dig it! Favorite tracks: Gotta Get Up, Coconut, Down, Early in the Morning, Jump into the Fire. Album art: I’m guessing that’s Harry, chilling in a bathrobe. The title’s nice and self-deprecating. It’s a simple pic, black and white, but I like it. 4/5
Never heard of Nilsson before, being a fan of the Beatles this was a pleasant surprise, really good album, deserves to be on the list and will make my frequent rotation.
Solid
Пара бопов! Семидесятые, еее
Quirky clever bastard. A magic voice and a magic brain.
Really liked it, he really sounds like the beatles.
expected this guy to have a deeper voice lol songs were mostly pretty catchy, first song in particular. this album was a good listen, that seven minute song could have been shorter though.
3.5
Really good
This wasn't quite as good as I had been expecting.
This kind of melodic pop is my wheelhouse - leading off with "Gotta Get Up" really sets the mood of the album - I'm not often a fan when the best track is the opening track but it was the right call here. Overall it's just a bit of hit and miss, but the best is really really good - including the opening track, "Without You" (which is completely overwrought, overblown, and works perfectly) and "Let the Good Times Roll" The novelty hit "Coconut" is a bit of a throwaway for me. pass. A few songs are just average (I'd rather pass on his louder stuff e.g. "Jump Into The Fire") but every one of them still conveys that same mood - overall the album is musically interesting enough to give a few almost Broadway-esque melodic turns but is obviously accessible enough to have been a huge hit. Even with the few hiccups, the *hit* parts of this record are so perfect that it ranks a very strong 4. 8/10 4 stars
What a talented dude. The compositions are all great
Everybody's Talkin' is one of my standards, one of the best film songs ever. I know nothing of Harry Nilsson beyond that. How did I let this happen? Thank you so much for this listen. I guess I perceived him as a soft pop one hit wonder. There is so much more depth here. Usually I say "there's a good reason I haven't heard this before". I can't find the reason here. A fun, diverse, well performed album. Not the magic of Everybody's Talkin', but real good shit. Even Without You sounded better tonight (that's been on my overstuffed shelf of "parent shit music"). But that said, I still had no idea that Harry Nilsson was behind it. Or Coconut!?! How did this all get past me? It doesn't happen often, but this is what I signed up for. Once in a while an album blindsides you. Keeps you on this ride for another hundred.
An old fave.
this is very silly and also very great. I love the whiplash going from a goofy little song to something tender and sweet. best tracks: gotta get up, without you. coconut
Harry Nilsson, what a character. All sorts of styles are presented by him here, all done beautifully. His gorgeous rendition of Badfinger's "Without You" being immediately followed by the zaniness of his self-penned "Coconut" tells you all you need to know.
This was better than I expected it to be. There are some real gems to be found here.
Fun
I used to think Harry Nilsson was dull: overplayed, ploddy, a bit McCartney-esque. It makes sense, his songs feel tuneful but touch repetitive; simple and easily conceived. Nilsson's dressing gown schtick supports this view that he doesn't strain for his work - although I believe this to be affectation. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this album. I'm perhaps the right age. There's good bluesy elements, a kind of sloppy, well-arranged rock n roll, it sounds like someone enjoying making music and it runs off. When the things over you miss it and that's the sign of a good album
I wasn't sure what to expect here. Nilsson is a name I'm very familiar with, but I couldn't have named a single one of his songs if you asked me before listening to this. I just know he used to party hard with John Lennon. But at least four of the songs on this album I know well and like, just didn't realize they were Nilsson. Jump Into the Fire is a banger, Coconut is a bit of a novelty song but is impossible not to like, and as much as Without You brings back memories of 70's easy listening on my parent's stereo, it really is a great song and a great performance. The interesting thing is the variety of styles - none of these songs sound alike at all. I really enjoyed this. 4 stars.
4.5
Really enjoyed this. Some great songs on here
This album was dope
Not listened to this album for years - had forgotten how upbeat it is (since everyone always just remembers Without You)
Before even knowing the history I heard the Beatles. Very talented musician, and now I know where a few more of those famous songs come from.
I was pleasantly surprised by this, it was great, sometimes weird but great
Man this album absolutely rocks!
I wasn’t totally sure about this one until “jump into the fire” came on, which is an awesome song. Many other good ones too- Nilsson deserves to be better known than he is.
Det kommer ju med lite skitlåtar av bara farten men det får man ta. Bra gjort, Harry.
Jinglourious songwriting and acerbic wit.
I wasn't really expecting to like this especially when I saw the country tag, but it was pretty alright. Nilsson's voice is definitely underappreciated. Fave track(s): Gotta Get Up
There are some absolute bops on here. Some of which I consider all time classics. A lot to like. Most of this stems from Nilsson’s unique charisma.
hahahah epic lots of recognizable tunes and its kind of funny hhah coconut
I have never heard of Harry Nilsson, but what an awesome voice. Not knowing anything of him or his music before listening, I am very pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed.
I liked this one, 3 and 2/3rds.
I liked this. This is a collection of Rock and Pop tunes that very often sound like the Beatles, without blindly copying their formula. Most songs don't sound like the others, and I can forgive the odd white-man-playing-the-blues(tm) track if there is a lot of variation otherwise. The biggest song is undoubtedly Without You. Mostly good stuff throughout. 4/5
Great album all around. Songs are timeless and don’t sound like typical early 1970s pop.
Cool album; sounds a bit like the Beatles sometimes, but with it's own twist. Without you and Coconut are my favourites. I see a lot of people loving Jump into the Fire; that one isn't really my jam though.
Zabavan pop-rock album od Nilsona Šmilsona.
Outside of "Everybody's Talkin'", I'm not very familiar with Harry Nilsson's work, but I really enjoyed this album. They lyrics and instrumentation were both great, and the songs were really well arranged. This isn't the type of music I typically gravitate towards, so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
1971 - Rock; Pop; Pop rock; Soft rock; Baroque pop
Nice surprise! Only familiar with Coconut prior to this. Nilsson’s voice is special. The songs were fairly diverse and quirky in their arrangements. Gotta Get Up reminded me of Billy Joel.
Very gentle. Played like the Beatles mixed with genesis
Not bad but all over the place.
Great album with lots of good songs and occasional less good songs
right from the first few notes of "gotta get up," i knew how pleasant and lovely this album was going to be! it's a charming and easy listen. there's nothing complicated here! i adore it, and i listened to it at least six times before writing a review. "without you" is the cornerstone of the album: it's beautiful and grabs at your heart, and nilsson's voice is so tender. i couldn't determine if it was on purpose, but i noticed multiple songs had an interesting intro. the stalled car sound in "driving along" or the heart thumping in "jump into the fire". also--what an absolutely cute album title in "nilsson schmilsson"!
This was a really intriguing album! I would say that the over-arching musical genres of this album are folk, rock, pop, and a bit of singer songwriter, but it is hard to reduce the album to that. Harry Nilsson is clearly very open to trying things, as there is a lot of musical diversity, creativity, and genre hopping going on here. I would say he's experimental in his own right, just not experimental in the same way someone like Pink Floyd might be. Practically everyone knows "Coconut", and may just not know it's Harry Nilsson. Well, the rest of the stuff on this album is just as entertaining, unique, and at times, just as quirky. This album was just incredibly fresh and pleasant to listen to when compared to music of the times, but all while still being very easy to listen to and accessible.
Bangers
A bit too tame for My taste though very cohesive
Without you великолепна; конспекты по физике великолепны; идея добавлять демо в альбомы великолепна
A delightful album! I didn't think I knew Harry Nilsson but turns out I knew a few of these songs, especially "Coconut" -- such a great, fun song! Lots of strong pop songwriting with a 70's rock sound and a Beatlesque feel to a lot of the songs. Nilsson can write and sing in a variety of styles -- the album kept surprising me by changing tone but I think it holds together nicely as one album. He's a charismatic performer and a joy to listen to. I liked his riffing in the second half of "Early in the Morning," the way he croons the word "crap" at 0:43 on "The Moonbeam Song," and every second of his singing on "Coconut." The 7-minute "Jump Into the Fire" caught me by surprise too. It's a helluva rocker and there's a desperation to his wailing as he tries to convince a lover that they can make each other happy. I'm excited to listen to more Harry Nilsson. With such a diverse collection of great songs on this album, he must have a lot more on other albums too.
I've heard this name before but never really listened to the music. To me at times it's like Beatles-y in writing, structure, and production. Which is a good thing! I like the seemingly random production elements - like the sound of machinery?!? in the start of "Driving Along". The songs felt short to me but they were all around the standard ~3:00 minutes in duration. Maybe that's a sign that I was enjoying it! Highlights: "Gotta Get Up" - overall nice song and i love the wacky ending. "Let the Good Times Roll" - big fan of letting good times roll here. "Early in the Morning" feels like a fever dream to me. Just comes across as a short weird repetitive vignette (in a good way!) Funny album title!
What a impressive musician! You can definitely see how Harry Nilsson influenced the Beatles and many other bands with this album.
For someone I'd never heard of, I was surprised how much of Harry Nilsson's music I knew. (The synchs! The covers!). The album artwork and title - while playful - point to the fact that Mr Nilsson lacked a coherent brand strategy. This could make a great WARC paper. (Short but covering many genres, this was a great listen).
I couldn't remember the name but then as I listened to the album, I realised that I have unknowingly listened to Mr Nilsson via a drunk Bridget Jones and repeated watches/listens to the Reservoir Dogs film and soundtrack. Can tell why he was known as the 'American Beatle' - hear a lot of solo/Wings-era McCartney in there. Also, some Ben Folds Five in the opening track. It crisscrosses a lot of styles, but it's not a jarring listen to play it all the way through. Each track is tight and a delight to hear.
The transition from ‘without you’ to ‘Coconut’ must be the biggest change in tone of any album on the 1001 list. Love the out-tro to ‘jump into the fire’. Overall, really enjoyed it, great full album listen.
Good album, Inter songs, has some humor in his lyrics, wrote some songs that became hits for others
didn’t think i’d like it at all, you can’t judge an album by its cover.
Without You is a fine fine song. Nilsson has a great voice and there are some cool songs on here I'd never heard before.
I really like Harry Nilsson, he seems like he was a real cool guy
Vraiment divertissant, je ne m'attendais pas à grand chose mais honnêtement peu de moments faibles.
This album was a breath of fresh air. It is absolutely popular music. It was absolutely a grammy nominated album back in the early 1970’s. It has the song Coconut on it. It does ballads next to seven minute rock songs. As an album it hops around ideas, but still seems to mesh well. You would think none of this would work, but it does. This overly large, goofy, at times, cheesy album belongs on this list. Listen to it! I mean, you have to, you're doing this list. But! Listen!
Classic 4/5
Slow start strong middle lime coconut living without you
What a pleasant album to listen to. Very enjoyable tracks and good vibes all around. Favorite track: Jump Into the Fire
really enjoyed the instrumentation and practical effects though some of the songs felt like they dragged on Really liked "without you" Did not know Harry Nilsson wrote "coconut"
Awesome
This album is pretty essential to anyone who cares about 70s pop culture. "Jump Into the Fire" and "Coconut" made their names later in prominent film soundtracks ("Goodfellas" and "Reservoir Dogs" respectively), and "Without You" might be one of his biggest hits. It was written originally by members of Badfinger, but Nilsson's gifted (and some say wasted) voice really enhances it in a way that I'm not sure the original writers could have replicated.
Man was just in a silly goofy mood
Awesome. It's like a 1970s version of Ween crossed with Richard Dawson.
Surprisingly good album. Had heard a few of the more well know hits before, but generally it was solid front to back. 4/5
enjoyable
This is another case of an album almost doing stuff that I like, but not quite reaching it, but this album is far better than the usual line up that does something similar. A lot of the songs just sound very manic, which has its place, but sometimes its hard to listen to, not in like a depressing way, but just like how a lot of stuff doesn't resolve how you want it to, and that's usually the whole song. Top tier album name, though. Its also weird hearing "Coconut" and realizing you knew a song off an album you had never heard of by an artist you had never heard of.
Fun album. Didn't love all the songs.
Førstesangen er helt rå, og så er det litt varierende videre. Men wow.
So many great songs on this album! 4/5
Coconuts, fun album, very versatile and funny at times, Without You is a banger.
I was nominally familiar with Harry Nilsson going into this — but here's one of those artists of whom I knew more of his material than I realized. In addition to "Coconut" and "Without You" (I'm most familiar with Heart's cover from their "Magazine" album), it's apparent Nilsson's influence is huge. Hard to tell who influenced who in some instances, but from McCartney-styled vocal melodies to Beach Boys harmonies, I also heard some Rundgren in there and imagine Ween listened to Nilsson as well. This is pretty inventive, non-formulaic pop that features as many song drafts as it does full-fledged songs (IMO), but that's all the more reason to admire the final product. This is cool stuff.
Yeah, this is a fun album and it was nice to hear it again. I like how eccentric and playful Nilsson is (e.g. the goofy bass on Jump into the Fire). And the dude can sing. His take on Without You is the best. I didn't care for Let the Good Times Roll, though. Anyway, solid album. Probably more of a 3.5 for me, but let's round it up, I'm feeling generous.
Ah Nilsson, so hard to pin down. How serious at times, how frivolous at others. Do you even enjoy this musician lark? Because you don’t sound like you are having as much fun as a pop star should be.
Sjukt gøy!
What a songwriter he was. Great stuff
Good tracks on this album!
Nice! 😀
Harry Nilsson was an odd and wonderful artist, this is a great album. You know these songs, even if you've never heard of Harry.
👌👌👌👌
Хороший мелодичный альбом. Не знал, что я слышал часть композиций этого музыканта.
Pretty good, schmitty good. Segall Smeagol is also worth a listen
I loved this so much, very unexpected. 8.5/10
I had heard of this album because of coconut being the end song of reservoir dogs but I had never listened to the whole thing. Safe to say I was surprised by how many hits and catchy songs were on this. Never knew all of these were Harry Nilsson let alone all on one album. 4.5/5
Quirky but in a good way. Album starts with a couple shirter songs that I wish were just a little longer. Then you're hit by a masterpiece cover of Without You which is followed by the goofiest song on this entire album Coconut. It's a little weird but I like it.
Messy people make great albums.
This album was...confusingly good? Really liked the whimsical songwriting and weird melody lines. Is this where the lime in the coconut bit started? Suddenly I understand why all of my classmates' Boomer parents were obsessed with this song. It's perfect meme material but before the internet really existed. Gotta Get Up gets the fave track award just for the cheerful jauntiness alone. Overall a solidly enjoyable album. Didn't love every single track but would definitely revisit.
Great album from a great singer and songwriter. I'm not sure if I like it more than The Point! or even Son of Schmilsson, but Jump Into the Fire and Coconut are such great songs. And his cover of Without You transformed it into the amazing ballad that every other cover since has tried emulating.
Great album, great songs. Even as a kid, I enjoyed it and felt badly when Nilsson died. Already part of my collection.
Didn't think I knew the artist, but I knew a lot of these songs. Definitely quirky, but still kinda fun. Can't tell how much of this is a joke!
Harry Nilsson was one of John Lennon's best friends, and you can hear his influence in this album. Quite a Beatlesesque soft rock album with folk influences. Lots of goofy songs like "Early in the Morning" and "Coconut," some expressive and dramatic songs like "Without You," and experimental songs like "Jump Into the Fire." The songs feel complete despite their short lengths, and I'm satisfied with how quick the whole album is. I already knew the 2 major hits, but I was pleasantly surprised by a few more highlights, and meanwhile, there were only 2 or 3 songs I did not care for.
What a pleasant surprise this was. Not something I would listen to regularly but I really enjoyed it.
Another solid 70s pop rock album. Favorites: "Driving Along", "Without You", "Junp Into The Fire"
Fun Beatles-y pop.
Cheerful and upbeat start. Then it's just kind of there. Good music, but nothing that makes me excited, except maybe 'Down,' which had some real life to it. 'Without You' is downbeat but I can definitely see why it was a hit. Also 'Coconut'... okay, maybe there's more to this album than I initially thought.
I already knew some Nilsson and loved it. Lots of range in this album - some odd ones like Lime in the Coconut - but I like that that is a bit mad and the contract to Without You. Weirdly I've liked Without You since I was a child and I was going through my parents' 6"s. I also have some shared memory with Callum of that song, some strange film we watched together at uni had a very harrowing scene using this song but it was pretty epic. I listened 2.5 times just to get a real feel for this
Fabulous! Loved it. I knew a few of the hits but never listened to a whole album of his, I love the sound, it's great. I know it's treated as a bit of a novelty song but I think Coconut is a really good song.
2nd June 2022 Listened in the morning of bank holiday Jubilee weekend. Spent Thursday doing house bits then saw the flaming lips in the evening. Didn’t expect piano and gentle, personable lyrics knowing only everybody’s talking. Loved it.
Fantastic collection of songs, but tonally all over the place.
A varied and interesting album, a mostly enjoyable listen. The 'lime in the coconut' song is bonkers but ace
Great soft rock album full of energy and humor.
I loved this album. Wonderful soft pop-rock that will make your day a whole lot better.
Enjoyed it quite a bit 4. As a Russian doll fan it kinda blew my mind that gotta get up was from 1971.
Great album with a lot of fun songs.
With Harry Nilsson looking mellow in a dressing robe, there's clue on the cover that this going to be a laid back idiosyncratic stoner record. For me Nilsson is a bit underrated as an artist and a singer. He wrote some decent songs and I absolutely love his voice. He had such a large vocal range (as on the Grammy winning 'Without You') and could cover pretty much anything and make it his own (as on 'Let The Good Times Roll'). I love the stoned playfulness of tracks he did write, like 'Coconut' and 'Gotta Get Up'. Not my favourite Nilsson album (that would be Ariel Ballet), but to it is a very good one.
Much better than I expected it to be. Obviously the tracks featured on Reservoir Dogs and Russian Doll soundtracks were culturally very familiar... and, of course... Ken Lee! Really enjoyed Jump Into The Fire too. I think several more listens and this could be a cherished album. 4.5
This guy has defo got a decent tune in him. Largely flying under the radar it seems like he’s got a serious cult following! Good album!
Day 13: Really liked this album. Easy to listen to, some good tunes and a decent voice. Favourite Songs: Coconut, Gotta Get Up, Jump into the Fire
Fun stuff. I need to explore him more. I know the Beatles really loved this guy. Also I learnt this is the source of that coconut song.
What I expected to be a generic solo album turned to be a humorous exploration of well aranged sounds. The vocals were solid, the tracks were interesting and quite varied and the tracks did not blend together but stood on their own merits. I definitly enjoyed my time here more than I would have expected. Highlights: Walk into the Fire, Without You
Not gonna lie - I was afraid to listen to this album based on the title and cover alone, but I didn't make a mistake and played it. It was fun, didn't expect it to be this energetic, felt surprisingly fresh for '71. Interesting arrangements, especially the brass section, combined with tounge-in-cheek lyrics and a pleasant voice made a recipe for a 35 minutes well-spent. Highlights: Gotta Get Up, Coconut
Jump Into The Fire >> reszta albumu. Mimo to solidny, współcześnie brzmiący, przyjemny album. Miał słabsze momenty, głównie podczas eksperymentów z obco brzmiącymi instrumentami (I'll Never Leave You, patrzę na Ciebie).
Solidne 4/5
Very Beatles like style and vibe. Some really good songs.
wow - doesn't sound like a 70s album at all, that could have been released yesterday. Suddenly wondered why he was heavily sampling "Without you" before realising it's his song! Just about getting over that and he puts the lime in the coconut...BRAVO!
L'ho trovato particolare e divertente. Non dei gran testi, ma dei gran arrangiamenti.
Never really heard of him but thought this was pretty good i’ll be back to this one
3.5
This mfer bangs
You put the lime in the coke you nut
Yo this is where the Lime and Coconut thing came from? That's pretty fucking wild. Took me by surprise. Overall it's not a bad record.
Didn't realise I knew so many of this guys songs, a great album
Nice
2nd listen. Interesting album. Some good songs and some great songs. 4/5 Standouts: Coconut, Gotta Get Up, Without You, Others: Driving Along, Early in the Morning, Moonbeam Song, Let the Good Times Roll, Jump into the Fire. Down
Nilsson is great
Whow! Tää puri mua siihen samaan kohtaan johon CCR:n yksinkertaisuus purasee. Ihan mainiot tekstit ja jotenkin kauttaaltaan mielyttävä kuuntelukokonaisuus. Kuuntelin putkeen kahdesti. Ja hei haloo onhan toi Without you ihan älyttön bängeri! 4/5 menee Kallen sunnuntailevyjen joukkoon.
Muy bueno
Fine album um,, lots of great songs and at time Harry's voice is absolutely beautiful, like in Without You. There are a couple of rockers that give this album energy. The blues song has a real air of authenticity and Harry makes it his own. As he does for all the material here. I can understand why this has become a classic and his go to album. 4.5 🌟
Slightly surprised how good this is. Jazzy, funky, soulful with a side order of rocking, all without really being any of those things.
grew up on this - feels like a comfy 70s pop sofa
*Early In The Morning * Jump Into the Fire Also decent Arthur Russell Iowa Dream vibes at spots.
deserves another listen, sorry harry
Rock (pop a veces) sesentero/setentero. Un megahit.
Why was this album so awesome?!
Decent album, very beatles-eque with a couple of songs that became famous later on due to being covered
lime in da coconut
What a fun eclectic mixture of tunes, did not know that he popularized the “lime in the coconut” song.
Call this one a *hard* 4.5 because man, I was vibing hard to this record until "Coconut" brought it to a screeching halt. "Coconut" feels like a novelty song mixed in with some absolute, genuinely wonderful pop music. The rest of the album? Flawless. Just drop "Coconut". Favorite tracks: "Gotta Get Up", "Down", "Without You", "Jump Into the Fire"
Cohesive stylistically, irreverent at times but it works
viel Beatles - Seargent peppers usw drinnen, Randy newman, Crosby stills and naish. Teilweise fast Musical-artig. Aufwändige Arrangements - und ganz weird - Fade outs! Auch teilweise comical - überspitzt (put the lemon in the coconut - SIMPSONS!!). Plötzlich - a wild KEN LIIIII LIBUDIBUDAUTSCHU appears! ned uninteressant
Pretty good except the Coconut song makes me want to never hear again. 7/10
Very mellow and nice.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs:
4/5
You put the lime in the coconut!
Put de in de coconut...
Pretty good. Didn’t expect to know some songs
Holy shit! I had no idea I knew so many of these songs or that Harry Nilsson sang them ("put the lime in the coconut.." Classic production from its era. Will add to regular rotation.
Pleasant. Even after hearing "Without You" at least a thousand times.
This was a very enjoyable surprise
You’ll know more than you expect from this, and it’s great fun!
I had only ever listened to best of's before so was surprised by how this works as a cohesive album. Coconut jarrs being such an over exposed silly song, it however works as a middle point of the record
Clàssic del soft rock de començaments dels 70, on destaca l'apropiació per sempre del tema de Badfinger 'Without You', però que no acaba aquí. Les divertides 'Coconut' i 'Gotta Get Up', les musculoses 'Jump Into the Fire' o 'Let the Good Times Roll'... tot el disc en sí és un poderós exercici de pop rock molt ben escrit, executat amb cura i produït amb encert
Enjoyed this. Thought I only knew Coconut (such a strange song compared to the rest of the album) but recognized several as the album went on. Without You is beautifully written and sang. Gotta Get Up has that Mr Blue Sky/ A Day In The Life “alarm clock” kinda feeling too it. Fav Songs: “Without You” “Gotta Get Up”
Richtig feines Stück Musik(geschichte). 3.8
More of the songs than I expected were ones I knew. A wide variety of styles and vocal range. The guy is clearly a genius, both in songwriting and in picking his cover versions to sing. Gotta get up, jump into the fire, and coconut were my favourite tracks
Only listened to this song once or twice before this time. It really is a fantastic set of songs. Varied in style and production Nilsson's absolute shines throughout. 4.5 stars
A wonderful idiosyncratic collection of songs that make me in turns both melancholic and joyful. Definitely gonna revisit this.
Absolutely brilliant stuff - his version of without you is the definitive one for me too
So many tracks that I know are on this album - a gem
First impression: blatant Beatles-esque attempt. HN's real voice is present in Early in the Morning and Coconut Song. I think that "Paul is Dead" might have been when HN left the band as was replaced by is brother PM who share a father? This is pretty good, against my original impression. 4 stars.
This guy is such an oddball to me for some reason. Is he really an oddball? I don't know. But I love so many of his songs and the fact that he was ever popular seems strange to me. He doesn't seem to fit in a particular genre of music.
There were a couple of occasions where I laughed due to surprise, so audacious could Nilsson be with some of his vocal melodies. An extraordinary voice. The same cannot be said for the music, which is quirky in the conservative way a lot of albums of this era are. Still, Nilsson draws on rock, jazz, blues and balladry with aplomb, making this a varied listen - and one that doesn't outstay its welcome.
So good. Even when there’s a song I tune out of or just generally dislike (looking at you “Coconut”), there’s usually a song right after that I’m all over. How great is that last tune? Strong closer, especially coming on the heels of “Jump in Ray Liotta’s Fire.” Gotta stir the sauce or it’s gonna burn, boys.
Pretty good. Reminds me of some good older tunes, but some of these I'd consider adding to a playlist
Fun
A lime and a coconut oh yeah
Skön 70-tals musik
Opening track is very familiar, didn't know Harry Nilsson but it's music that you've definitely heard in movies/tv. Poppy classic rock, a guy and his keyboard and occasionally a guitar in the mix. Kind of fluctuates between jaunty energetic tunes and some more slow/sad tunes. Some real bops in the mix, good energy and you can really feel how deep he is into the music as he's playing and giving it his all when he sings. Only one that I really didn't like was the last song on the album. Everything else was enjoyable and brought a lot of different styles and emotions to the album.
Actually quite enjoyed this, real mix of styles. I'd have given it 3.5, but happy to round up for the album title 😂
Had never heard of him, which is surprising given I had definitely heard "Without You" before. Lots of solid songs, 1 bit of sound medical advice (Coconut) and one absolute banger in "Jump into the fire"
YOU PUT THE LIME IN THE COCONUT AND DRINK IT ALL UP. (Honestly the rest of the album was pretty good) 4
Really good. Not a bad track on it - some better than others, but consistently above average.
Good Album, great vocals of course and introspective lyrics
Aside from a couple songs the album was really good. It had fun songs that felt like an old movie intro and emotional songs that made me wanna give Harry a hug.
that “Gotta Get Up” song is so catchy. cool percussion. his voice was very lovely. a very feel but also very sad but in a nice way. nice sad. a really good album overall but the end songs were just a bit weak :( shame
Nilsson is an expert songwriter. I am impressed by most every song on here, just lovely works. I don't have much more to say. Just great songs.
Love the first song, knew it from Russian Doll. Other songs also very pleasant. Coconut featured in Reservoir dogs also a classic of course!
I'm finding it exceedingly hard to rate this album. On the one hand, it contains some great songs (Gotta get up; Coconut; Jump into the fire; Early in the morning). On the other hand, it also contains some kind of whiny songs that I definitely thought about skipping (Without you; I'll never leave you). However, he did name this album Nilsson Schmilsson, which also deserves at least another half star. Let's settle for 4.5 stars then, which I will round down to 4.
Good hits, I enjoyed this - I liked the variety of "bops" and some that were more cinematic
great songs, great diversity and honestly surprised that i was completely unaware of the name harry nilsson
Pop americano surpreendentemente poderoso e cativante.
Didn't recognize any of the songs until track 6 then it was a steady stream of bangers.
Really dig this.
I enjoyed several of these songs. Can definitely sense this album had an impact on several artists work
Love the name. Love the album cover. Didn't realize how classic some of his songs were.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUAaHkGpJy8 Zeer leuk album, ga ik nog vaak luisteren
Goat album naam Without you is met het hart Coconut is met de heupen
Great music for driving around on a summer day
I liked quite a few songs, would listen to it again
I seriously hesitated in not giving this album 5 stars. The first song is super fun, reminding me of the upbeat music of scissor sisters. The drum break in Jump Into the Fire is one of the biggest highlights. You can really hear a Beatles-esque influence all throughout the album. Will definitely listen again.
Liebe den album Titel und das cover lol
Coconut ist eine coole Neuentdeckung für mich.
Top drawer
Never heard of this guy but knew at least a third of these songs. Excellent stuff.
Absolutely brilliant stuff - his version of without you is the definitive one for me too
3.5 tbh, bunch of fun songs
eclectisch maar met goede nummers beschrijft het helemaal. Leuk album. Jammer van Jump into the fire dat niet helemaal past bij de sfeer.
herkenbare opener uit 'Russian Doll', mooie versie van 'Without You' en 'Jump into the Fire' is had me op het einde helemaal mee. De rest ook mooi, maar springt er minder uit
loved this - so many great tunes on here...
Production: 14/20 Songwriting: 16/20 Innovation: 12/20 Presence of pure bangers: 15/20 Emotional response: 16/20 =73 OOhh and then I found out that LCD covered jump into the fire which is cool
Top
Surprised by the album and how much I enjoyed it. Always excited to recognize a song (as someone with not much of a music background) so enjoyed Coconut when it came on, but also liked it a lot more than I expected. Good tunes all around.
There a few songs on here that are familiar and really good.
I liked it a lot -- it was quite strange, but I thought that there were some sick instrumental parts, and he has a really nice voice. I liked Without You, Jump into the Fire, and The Moonbeam Song, but the Coconut song is also a straight up classic.
Put off listening to this, but a vey surprising album full of great Beatle-era pop tunes. 4.3
Put off listening to this, but a vey surprising album full of great Beatle-era pop tunes. 4.3
very fun, what a difference between without you and coconut. I liked early in the morning and jump into the fire best (sick bass and drums).
I'm not sure why but was expecting this to be...well, more Scandinavian! Having said that with the exception of the over use of an accordion on the first song, its quite good. Beatle-esque. Solid 3/5 Extra point as in the 2nd half of this album it really ups its game 4/5
Algunas de las canciones me traen magníficos recuerdos.
Without You" / "Gotta Get Up" Released: October 11, 1971 "Jump into the Fire" / "The Moonbeam Song" Released: March 1972 "Coconut" / "Down" Released: June 1972
Good album
Nice and cute album. Can tell that this one is a folk old classic
Probably my favorite of his. Smooth as hell. 7/10
at times ween-esque, very poppy, good vocals
This is Sunday morning spring cleaning music. Open the blinds, open the windows because and it’s just warm enough. The sun peeks through some clouds and you know it’s gonna stay out all day. It’s time to get out the swifter. Really enjoying the Beatles-esque voice meshed with a few electric guitar riffs. Reminds me of Carole King.
Fun! Love the Coconut song.
A couple perfect songs. Well produced.
Jonathon Coulton def was influenced by Nilsson. Show-tunsey. Feel good.
Not much to say, I just like it
I recognize way too many songs from this and never knew who the artist was. Ive learned something today!
Me identifiquei com o álbum, parece algo que eu faria se eu fosse músico. A faixa do coconut foi divertida :P
Not just Lime In Coconut :)
I love a good 70s singer/songwriter record, and this one's right up my alley.
false
Riktigt gött album alltså. Omslaget går ju inte av för hackor det heller.
70s bop
Put da lime in da coconut.
Jävligt trevligt.
I about lost my shit when Coconut came on. Should have known that Coke wasn’t clever enough to come up with a jingle like that
mitigee mais without you a eu mon coeur sinon pas une grande fan
Yeah it was ok
Some good songs.
This is fine but I won’t remember anything in particular about it.
cool
Diverse, production seems inconsistent? Some good hooks, some really interesting moments. Clearly a talented singer, the song writing is perhaps a bit out there
Not bad. Fun music
okay, interesting sound
Liked it enough, but lacked anything memorable
название прикол поначалу не особо мне зашло но в середине треки уже получше
it's decent. interesting enough to keep me hooked. nice sound.
Nilsson is sometimes good, sometimes annoying, but never truly great
The piano on Gotta Get Up is 100% “oh this is a beatles song” so i was interested to read that Nilsson was another 5th beatle. I recognized Without You and of course Coconut (like borrrrderline racist lmao). meh…ok fine. Jump Into the Fire is legit interesting but not much else here for me.
First 5 songs were much better than the last 5.
Not my favorite, but its cool to see the lime in the coconut song
Felt like a Beatles rip then I saw Lennon helped make this record
HE'S THE PUT THE LIME IN THE COCONUT GUY. What a crazy change of pace from the song before, holy fuck.
Without you and Coconut are okay, the rest didn't do much for me.
Not bad, little bit weird at times. Recognise coconut and without you
Didn’t really care for this. Without You and Coconut I was familiar with, the rest I mostly skipped. “American Beatle” makes sense for the style of music. (3)
Music that was at worse in-offensive and at best delightful. I can understand why this album is one that people talk about and im sure at the time of release was groundbreaking.
Some good tracks, so bland. 2.5
A rare case when the name totally fits the music. Total schmilsson. Doesn’t necessarily mean bad, the guy obviously was talented, it’s just it really could’ve been better if it hadn’t been that much eclectic.
Some lovely tunes, some dreadful lyrics. Feels like the last flowering of 60s flower power.
A great voice and one of the most classic covers of all time!
Put the lime in the coconut
The album cover is top notch. A robe and a pipe....truly one of the best album covers on this list so far. Easy 5 stars for that. The album itself was just fine, but a bit forgettable. 3.5 stars rounded down
Revisit
Boring Boring Boring Wait the coconut song? Cool Boring Boring boring
Album as a whole is pretty solid. Nice easy listening. I was so excited when Without You started up, considering it’s my favorite Badfinger song… well that excitement vanished quickly. What a dreadful cover. Then I found out that this mawkish imposter is the version that is highly celebrated???? What a world.
First couple songs are heaters and my guess is Without You inspires a lot of strong opinions both ways. Doesn't feel like there is a lot of substance to this album as a whole, however.
There are couple of recognizable decent jams on here ("Gotta Get Up", Coconut"), but this album feels like a pale imitation of a variety of better acts (2.5)
Silly man with his silly songs
this was nice, but i wouldn't really play it again
Meh. 2.8
en stark 3a! har en så svag punkt för Harry Nilsson, och flera låtar på det här albumet jag verkligen älskar, men också ganska många låtar som inte lämnar ett så starkt intryck
Well this is an eclectic mix. Obviously knew he did “without you” but wasn’t expecting the limey coconut one right after. Very random compilation of styles. Quite enjoyable if a bit bizarre
it's fun, it was some bangers, but it really lost me at "without you", thank god "coconut" is the very next song
My rating 3.4. This was a surprise. You may have known the song but didn’t know the artist
that coconut song is soo bad
It’s a nice enough collection of songs, even if it’s hard to believe Coconut is a real song. His version of Without You is pretty good but ultimately I don’t think I’m in my 40s enough to fully enjoy this.
Better than just the guy who did a lame cover of without you
Enjoyed the album but didn't love it. Only song I've heard on this album was Coconut for some reason.
Pretty damn cool...was just hoping for more "Jump In The Fire" type jams but that's not here. This is somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for me. I get it, I get why people like this...I'm just not sure if I'd go back to this on my own. Totally get it and respect it though.
Popero a gusto
6.1/ 10
Not bad, two absolute classic songs with standard 1970 rock/pop fillers to make up the album. Much better albums were released in this period I feel.
Pretty fun album. Never heard of this guy, but once you listen you realise you've heard a few songs heaps of times. Pretty solid collection here, just a few tunes that sound a little same-y.
2 class tracks on here, reminds me of my dads music - coconut, and without you - I just read up about him, cool
"Jump Into the Fire" a classic GoodFellas tune. Not much else of note and an overall hodgepodge of songs.
typical for its time, doesn't take itself too seriously. that bassline on jump into the fire is incredible though! 3.5/5
Listened to on my Apple EarPods. This was quite an interesting album. I've never heard of Harry Nilsson before--at least until 'Coconut' came on and I thought "wait, this guy made that song?" Although Coconut comes in as the most 'bizzare' song on the album, it is representative of the feel of the album on the whole. It has the baroque pop-rock foundation, but Nilsson often runs with unconventional ideas within the tracks, which really helps the album out from blending in to any number of similar sounding albums of the time. Because, yes, this album does have a "yeah, I'm familiar with this kinda music" vibe throughout, as songs fall right in line with what my mom played for me growing up. As a matter of fact, I often found the lyricism to be the weakest part of the album, with a lot of pretty milquetoast dives into love. However, it really is the unique music ideas, structures, and vocal performance from Harry Nilsson that elevates this into a good listen. Though I found myself unimpressed by the lyrics themselves, Nilsson never fails to deliver his writing in earnest and expressive ways, with belting yells and soft whines that are just great in terms of emotion. Beyond his vocal performance, he has a lot of good song ideas, like 'Early in the Morning' which is a blues cover on electric organ, breathing new life into a old track. I also found myself impressed with 'Jump into the Fire', which sees Nilsson explode into some heavy duty rock with a real punk feel, running long with an extended drum solo section at the end that helps the whole song feel electrifying. 'The Moonbeam Song' is so soft and smooth, and 'Without You' has probably the best vocal performance of the album, even if I don't really like the lyrics themselves. Whether it's stripped back minimal blues like in 'Early in the Morning' or the orchestral 'Without You', Nilsson showcases a diverse range of creativity on the tracks here, and this range also works to highlight how it is truly in service of what the track needs. He's not afraid to layer up plenty of instruments, but he knows when to pull it back as well, or when to just let the drums and guitar rock your out of your seat. The album is also pretty succinct, with 10 tracks coming in at just 35 minutes, which is right around the sweet zone for me in terms of album length. However, there was a lingering feeling of songs not knowing quite how to resolve, as they often faded out rather than culminating into something with closure. Still, this album is a really solid listen all around. Barring the weak endings and lyricism, Nilsson is a great vocal performer, and the tracks are varied and interesting.
