Some fun ones. I could do without coconut
Some great songs, but then some mediocre.
Not my thing
Anything that pairs one of the greatest ballads of all time (without you) with put the lime in the coconut deserves respect.
Listened to it at the gym, not really a good place for it. I should definitely give it another listen
American version of The Beatles - some decent songs, and some that really aren't my thing; Slightly folky indie pop. Cool that this guy was actually friends with John Lennon though. Most famous song in the album is Coconut (as in - put the lime in the coconut).
Interesting. Surprised by “Without You” did her write that? “Jump Into the Fire” is a banger
It was pretty good
o is this another funny 70s guy .. no it isn't! I liked it, especially the a bigger splash song
This album was all over the place, it changed style a lot. I did not like the ballads much, but the faster paced songs were good. Stand-out: Early in the Morning
Lots of recognizable songs and pretty good.
Solid. A little generic but some cool vibes throughout
Clearly a pioneer in producing and produced some classics, but the albums sound is not for me.
Some catchy songs.
Cool discovery, reminded me of Elton John's music, didn't know this was where the lime and the coconut came from, or without you was a cover and this was the original.
Good stuff.
noh mitääb muista
First listen: First song was great, some a bit too slow. Overall I enjoyed it.
Okay but I don't quite get why this album is so highly regarded.
Good production happy and sad songs in one
That one about coconuts slaps & Reservoir Dogs is my favourite Tarantino so extra credit Enjoyed the eclectic mix on this one
Most of this is just okay, not very memorable. Although WTF is ‘Coconut’? Possibly the worst song I’ve heard yet on this project. Overall probably won’t listen again.
Second time listening. Grew on me. If I spent more time maybe I would like it even more.
This was alright, but it seemed to have a good amount of filler
Pretty good, but I wouldn't compare him to the Beatles. Strong 3 low 4?
Nilsson is sometimes known as the American Beatle and I can hear it in a few songs, or mixes of their individuals styles. The album was a little all over the place, with big swings from the druggie Coconut to the melancholic Without You (which is the most popular but definitely not my favorite). It does feel very 70s so I'll be a little nicer but I won't be returning to this as a whole.
Gets a three because Without You was number one the week my wife was born.
Good album but the transition from without you to coconut was like being hit by a car
Er zitten een aantal goede nummers in, maar over het algemeen redelijk teleurstellend
Can’t remember what I wanted to say about Harry - I remember discovering him w a Tarantino soundtrack - put the lime in the co co nut.. clever fellow - he is out there - in a good way
That was fine. Also fun, but mostly fine. It was mostly your standard 60's/70's singer songwriter vibe. A good time but nothing special. Then he goes and throws the coconut at you. That really comes out of left field. I kinda wish it was more fun coconut type songs. On reflection though, a whole album of limes and coconuts would get old quick. Album cover: (B+) Its really not much of a visual, but it just pairs so well with the name. Nilsson Schmilsson is a delight of a name, and him being a bum in a bathrobe with that stupid of a name very much endears him to me. I like to think we would be friends.
I had no idea where the phrase "Put The Lime in the Coconut" came from. "Let the Good Times Roll" is a great song. Most of the songs were a little boring for me, the album was missing a little bit of something. 6/10
3.5
Singer-songwriter é uma loteria né?! Tem uns que os artistas são só tristes, mas nesse álbum eu senti que o Harry Nilsson realmente tem algo a dizer. Me lembra The Beatles. Gostei de Early in the Morning, Down e Coconut.
I understand some of the significance for this album, but it just doesn't feel substantial enough for me to give it above a 3.5, and since there are no half stars, I have to round down, in this case. There are some good songs, but so much of it is too silly and lacks weight for me to consider it something influential or impactful enough for me.
yea its pretty decent some better than others
It's nice to finally know who sang Coconut.
Looking at this album my first thought it was gonna be some stoner folk from the 1970s. Initial response: not really interested. But I gotta say I was actually kind of surprised on how much I liked it. There are some really good tracks on here With I think my favorite being the horn-laden song Down. Gotta Get Up is a great opener, and the bluesy Early In The Morning showed some good blues mastery in such a simple song. There are a couple of bad tracks on here as well, such as Moonbeam Song and I wasn’t too fond of Without You as it sounded like a Beatles knock-off. Overall, I’m not sure if this is a commit to vinyl album, but it’s definitely a listen again.
The flagship version of Ken Lee. Coconut is a classic as well.
Some goof stuff, some familiar tunes old school stuff 3/5
Good album. "Coconut" is a popular one but I find it annoying. "Gotta Get Up" is my favorite on the album.
Didn't really know this guy, but its got some classics on it.
3/4
Love the album cover. Not quite so sure on the album. Its a good length so have listened to it a few times and whilst its generally very pleasant (and i can see the Beatles comparisons) not much really lands with me. Without You is unfortunately in the played to death camp and Coconut is on the wrong side of fun. I do like Jump into the Fire - that has a groove.
without you is kind of an all timer. love the layering of vocals that crop up every few songs. don’t largely care for the slower songs, but the others are undeniably fun.
Some of these songs are all timers, but the tone of the album is a little too inconsisten
Straightforward Beatlesy affair, most of the tracks are fine and cute, and I like the Creedance pastiche in Jump Into the Fire. The album's main two hits, Without You and Coconut are rather annoying however and I'm puzzled as to how the latter has endured so much. Not a bad album at all, but at the end of the day I'm not a huge fan of the straightfoward pop of the 70s.
beatles x elton actually pretty dope, wouldn't include on regular rotation tho
I really liked this album. I would listen to it again. I have always loved the song Without You but had never heard this version before. Some good Beatles inspired pop songs. Favourite song: Without You Least favourite: Coconut. What on earth was that about. Album artwork: Standard album cover
Imagine you have a honestly great album, arguably nearly 5 stars after 6 songs and then you butcher it with a fucking COCONUT song?! Honestly, strong start but second half couldn't keep up.
Very mid
give me blues and ill have a good time not too sure about Coconut tho
Opener superb. First half good Second half classics Without You is a classic Between a 3 and a 4
Interesting
I really liked it! 😂 It’s definitely an album I’ve never heard before although I knew 2 songs. I would listen to it again as background music while working at the house. 3.5 Stars
Individually, the songs are great. As an album, little cohesion and there are too many drugs involved in the making of this album.
Well, this was an artist that I knew nothing about. I went ouside the borders of the album and discovered good songs ! such as "Everybody's Talkin' " or "One". Concerning the album, there is good and less good ones. I appreciated the great bassline on "jump into the fire". The album has a good finish on "ill never leave you", that song is very melancholic / bit sad. Interesting album but not a fan of all songs.
Nilsson Schmilsson by Harry Nilsson is by far the most satisfying album name we've had to date.
I mean, I love the Coconut song. Everything else I could take it or leave it.
quirky, off beat, 70s, warm
really a cute lil album. coconut is a fun song. something new
Recognized more than i thought i would. Most not really my jam though.
3 stars. One very imbalanced album. Without you followed by coconut! What a hand break turn
Albumi #111, 16.11.2024 Harry Nilsson on uusi tuttavuus. Nilsson Schmilsson on Nilssonin seitsemäs studioalbumi vuodelta 1971. Varsin mukavan lupsakkaa meininkiä josta ainakin minä löysin sävellyksellisiä samankaltaisuuksia Beatlesin kanssa.
Pretty good. Some classics I didn’t know he sang.
Alright
i always really enjoyed Nilsson! i love that hes silly !!
Better than I was expecting. It has a nice mellow 70s rock sound throughout
Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson * Fun opener * Second track a bit meh * Then starts getting a bit samey * Down is fun * Without Me also sounds like a classic * THIS IS THE COCONUT GUYYYYYYYY Lime in the Coconut * Back end gets more interesting All in all, not bad - 3/5
Lime in the coconut
I didn't know those songs were his.
- 4/10 songs added to main playlist - Going in completely blind - Can see how this is enjoyable - Not necessarily for me - Not my favorite genre, but I like this project overall for introducing me to some songs I might have never heard otherwise - Big fan of the jazzier/blues elements - Jump in the Fire??? The song from Goodfellas??? - awesome song - Favorite song: Jump In the Fire
Nilsson Schmilsson was actually a pretty solid album with some really good songs in there. For this album, i like how a lot of the songs do not sound similar to each other and have something new and unique from each other to add to this album. Of course, my favorites were all the really groovy, jazzy, and just fun and fast-paced songs. Some of the slow songs were alright too with them still being pretty unique from each other but sometimes, they did have a tendency to just meander along without really doing anything special. Other than that, this album is a pretty darn good one. Best Song: Gotta Get Up Worst Song: Early in the Morning
POV: Your uncle, who considers himself 'the funny guy', wakes up one lazy sunday morning and decides to whip out some silly, McCartney-esque songs. The result is tolerable, occasionally even pretty good, but most of all just kind of pointless.
It was a decent album.
I can hear why he was called "the American Beatle". A bit "hippie dippy" at times, but it's tuneful. Highlights: "Driving Along" (strummy pop song), "Down" (piano-based boogie, nice horn riff counterpoint) "Without You" (classic), "Coconut" (silly but fun) Notable: "Jump into the Fire" (definitely a departure with heavier guitars, screamier vocals, and a crazy percussion breakdown. Unfortunately, his voice doesn’t really fit this style. This song takes the listener on a journey, but I don’t think I want to go.)
Jump into the fire & without you (spanische Version noch besser) mag ich und der Albenname ist 10/10 aber der Inhalt kinda boring aber es schadet mir nicht es anzuhören
I really enjoyed a few tracks on this...but then it also had the coconut song and some really predictable lyrics on others
I liked the name of the album. Started off well but the rest was ok. Was a pretty good length.
fairly boring.
6/10 - I liked some of the earlier songs but others were not as enjoyable. Early in the morning was boring and coconut was insane, but fun to listen to. The rest were just alright.
Meh. Kinda boring
3.5
Had some heaters, but first impression on new tracks were ok
This album was... competent... at parts. That's the best way to put it. Nothing to special, but fairly alright on execution. It's kind of just meh. Except for "you put de lime in de coconut" which, tbf, is far more interesting in the full song, but still annoying as hell to have stuck in your head.
This is basically Beatles-lite. It's got it all, super catchy bop to start it off ("Gotta Get Up"), strong power-ballad ("Without You"), completely ridiculous novelty song ("Coconut"). It's certainly all over the board, but he's clearly talented and it's fun enough. I don't think I had ever heard this guy's name before, but there are some pretty iconic songs on here. I guess he was a favorite of the Beatles and was friends with Lennon and Ringo. You can definitely hear the influence, it's kind of like if The White Album was way shorter and worse. The original release is pretty short (35 minutes) and there's a few covers on here, including "Without You", which is his big hit but was originally recorded by the band Badfinger. Generally solid, though probably a bit forgettable overall (though "Gotta Get Up" has been stuck in my head since I listened to it). Side note, but I never really had thought about who sang the "lime in the coconut" song, now I know. Favorite song: Gotta Get Up Other: Driving Along, Early in the Morning, Down, Without You, Coconut 10/21/24
The got three “oh that’s who that is” on this album.
Eclectic, enjoyable, and at times delightfully strange. There's something for everyone here but not everything is for everyone.
5 estrellas solo por la relación con John Lennon y por aparecer en el soundtrack de mi película favorita es como si mi personalidad y mis gustos fueran un album
I only listened to this album the other day on the occasion of what would have been my 50th wedding anniversary to with my first wife. Not that I think of her a lot but she came into my mind on this significant day. Reason was that the album contained ‘our song’ Without You. Turns out that I could live without her so for me the song has not aged well. But it is a good song. I obviously bought the album on vinyl 50 years ago and I remember then that my valuation of it was that apart from that one song there was nothing of interest elsewhere so it rarely got played. Listening again brought nothing new so my evaluation of it has not changed. So it will be again stored somewhere in the back of my brain until I might be lucky enough to get to the 60 years mark when I can imagine playing the album again on receipt of the telegram from The King. As my life has progressed this will be the nearest I get to that moment in reality. So that deserves a higher rating than perhaps the album itself deserves. 3/5 13/10/24
Quirky, playful, intriguing, radiating something between wisdom and madness. Like a random guy showing up to a party in a bathrobe. There are stories to be told and fun to be had. However, as is usually the case, the shtick is up pretty fast. But this bathrobe stranger knows when it's time to go and doesn't overstay.
Harry had a great voice. The album is basically a collection of party songs with a few gems mixed in. His cover of Without You is a masterpiece.
This is very easy Listening. I’ve listened to this record before but it’s an album I haven’t come back to often. Well this list is here to rectify that. I know it’s good but how good is it. Well I’m gonna say it’s a 3.5/5 . The two big Singles “Coconut” and “Without You” are definitely my favourite songs here. Everything else is good but these two are a cut above the rest
Lots of hits I recognized that didn't know he sang
A fun variety of songs with a couple classics I recognize
It had some great individual songs but kind of all over the place from jazzy to Christian
Ihan kiva, menestysaineksia. Snadisti tarpeeks lähellä kolmosta.
Not bad - shades of McCartney - enjoyed it though
Some very well known tracks on here that I never knew he sang. Without You is a classic ballad also covered by Maria Carey and as soon as the opening of Coconut started I instantly pictured the Reservoir Dogs crew :-D
I CAN'T LIVEEEEEEE BEDIEBOEDIBOEDABOE
Great vocal performance. Hard to believe Can’t Live Anymore is followed up by Lime in the Coconut. Not in a good way. Enjoyed this album though.
Very enjoyable listen. Relaxing trip down memory lane. Very melodic and the covers were goo too.
Nice.
The transition between Sunday and Monday in one album. Coconut sounds very Noel fielding - but funny
Pretty decent album, a little too easy-listening for my tastes but no bad tracks. ‘Coconut’ is embedded in pop culture but I always thought it was a bit overrated. 3.25/5
Pretty good.
I liked this, a step above most of the singer songwriter stuff we've had from that era. He's got a great voice, and there's a couple of great songs there (Without You is the best-known and probably the best). Coconut is apparently quite well thought of, but my first thought when listening to it was 'problematic' (yes, he does do 'the voice'). A comfortable 3/5.
3.5
3.5
More like Nilsson Schmils...fuck!
Interesting and enjoyable album. I had never heard of Harry Nilsson but I am definitely intrigued. The sound is a little Beatles-esque at times with some catchy melodies. The highlight of the album is definitely the beautiful and poignant Without You, though I also enjoyed the last few songs. Coconut was bizarre but not bad.
Album title - SICK. I’ve never heard of this at all. I’ve probably heard this song but maybe not. I’m troubled that I haven’t really discovered much music through this, so I’m excited by the prospect of some Norwegian weirdo. The song is a little obnoxious. Kind of in a good way. Although I am NOT an accordion man. Ugh the groove is kind of infectious. Trippy alien jazz outro is a winner. The vocal range is good but the songs are basic so far. This was fine. Not much to say. Hmmm. Lil organ stabs with some white guy blues. I’ll let you in on a secret, it’s early in the morning when I’m listening to this. How crazy is that????? This song is fun. The crazy vocal inflections and whatnot. This guy is weird. I like it. I have watched a movie. Next. Ohhh a moonbeam. No. I cannot see the spectrum of light individually. Come on Harold. This one is a little boring and kind of stagnates. Now THIS is white guy blues. The other blues song was nice. This is Hard Rock Cafe bald, beet red, beer swilling dad blues. He still has a cool voice. Or is it insufferable here? Not a shining moment. Especially with this extended big band outro. Next. Lyrics and composition by Peter Ham. Rhyming tomorrow with sorrow??? This guy is cooking hardcore. Listen. This is his most played song, meaning it’s probably bad. It’s fine. It’s a ballad. It could be prettier. Very run of the mill to me. Oh man. What are we doin here. It was a different time. I guess. Is this the verbal blackface interlude?? Yeah, this is too silly to be good and not silly enough to be intentionally funny. I hate that I don’t mind this one. I’m usually an advocate of bad times and certainly if it were good times, rolling would not be encouraged. Some of the dumb pop tropes are still here and the lyrics are dumb as sand, but hey this one is serviceable. Jump in(to) the fire?? Metallica? Is that you? It is not. But it at least has some drive. I think I like the songs he writes for himself far better. He leans into repetition a lot and the lyrics are nothing to write home about, but lyrics shmyrics right? There are parts that sound like U2 which make me shudder at the tolling of that bell. What hell awaits. Anyway. The bass interlude is the best thing to happen all day. Is this Clair de Lune played by an elementary schooler?? Another ballad. Why does he get so operatic? Weird music is winning the day on this one. His lyrics really aren’t good though are they. Again though, the odd music. This was an interesting album. Held my listening and wasn’t bad at all. Nothing earth shattering here, but some nice moments. 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: Gotta Get Up, Early in the Morning, Jump into the Fire
Good coconut song & jump into the fire, the rest mid
Some great songs and also one about a coconut.
überraschend
I’m not sure how to rate this album, as it just felt like white noise in the background. Neither bad nor great. A few songs featured that I never knew Harry wrote/ sung. So that was a wonderful surprise.
Decent 7 Just a fun pop rock record to be honest. Fav Tracks: Gotta Get Up, Driving Along, Coconut, Let The Good Times Roll, Jump Into The Fire Least Fav Track: Early In The Morning
Wild album in hindsight, with cultural impacts ranging ranging from novelty sings to corny ballads to legit hits. It's inconsistency is its biggest flaw, but it's place on this list is deserved.
Album was okay, easy listening
Interesting history, fine music I guess. The lime/coconut song is pretty unforgiveable
I was surprised that I knew so many songs on this album despite never having heard of it or Harry Nilsson.
wait—either this has been reviewed by the group already or I’m in the San Andreas movie
Very Eclectic feeling singer songwriter. I honestly don’t have much to say. I enjoyed it I suppose.
A few good songs make up for the bad.
Not a fan of the ballads but some were ok. Wouldn’t listen again
I always forget about Harry Nilsson, but enjoyed this album
This album grew on me, at first I felt nothing but slowly overtime it got a bit better after each listen. The transition from Without you to Coconut is whiplash, I can't tell if I love it or hate it. Regardless it's got some catchy songs and great singing.
This is a perfectly nice album, but nothing more than that. At times it gets quite silly, which isn't a bad thing but it means the whole album feels like a collection of songs rather than a coherent work. I liked Gotta Get Up, Without You and Coconut was fun, but I expect would quickly become grating. Threeth stars
Very fun and groovy 70s rock album. There are hints of everything such as reggae and funk scattered throughout. Favorites: Down, Without You Least Favorite: Coconut
Ken leeeeeee!
Fun 70’s
I like how every track on here was quite unique, and the the album as a whole was short and sweet. Nice guitar work but not something I would regularly listen to.
No sé de música pero siento que tiene de todo country, reggae y psicodelia jajaja
starts off with an absolute banger , early in the morning is sweet and so is without you, coconut is quite experimental but fun, might grow on me. Later half of the album is not as strong
Good fun except Without You that song is awful.
Easy listening but bland at times
Harry Nilsson is undoubtedly incredibly talented, however this album just really does nothing for me. Probably has to do with how over played it is but it just doesn't feel special
Side 1 was solid but side 2 starting from Coconut was meh
7/15/24. Very Beatles like in terms of production, some interesting songs on here and like Harry's voice.
Very good album, not something to put in my rotation though
Not a bad album by any means, but lacking in consistency. Don’t think I’ll revisit
Some real bangers on this. Also a couple of clunkers. (I know Coconut is famous and all, but it's pretty stupid.)
Album really varied. How do you go from Without You to Coconut? I wanted badly to like this as a whole, but don't. Maybe forced listenings will get me more on board? Some of these are great (Gotta Get Up), but then there are the ones where he sounds like he's dying (Without You).
Favourite songs: Down, Driving Along, Without You, Si No Estas Tu Least favourite songs: The Moonbeam Song, Coconut, How Can I Be Sure of You, Lamaze 3/5
Fun listen
Well, that was....something...
I loved this album. It was fun half of the time, and calm the rest.
One of those albums where you end up knowing nearly half the album because the songs have appeared in movies and TV shows. Overall, I enjoyed this albums vibe, and almost bummed it up a star because my daughter seemed to dislike it.
Inoffensive. & I enjoy 'Gotta Get Up' because of 'Russian Doll.'
Not what I was expecting but in a good way. Great instrumentals. Started off strong but towards the end the momentum decreased. There are still some tracks I'd hear again. Highlights: Gotta Get Up Without You Coconut
I enjoyed this more than I expected to based on the dismissive album title.
It totally doesn’t fit aesthetically on this album, but I enjoy Coconut. From listening to the rest of the album, I would not have guessed that Harry wrote it, but he did.
da lime in dee co-co-nutt..
Great album
“A good pop album.” - J. E. Shaull
A nice pop record. Forgot some of those tunes were on there
I had not heard of Nilsson before but I'm glad I know him now. I did some digging and it seems the Beatles were big fans of his which makes a lot of sense, this album was similar to a rubber band/revolver from the Beatles. Very enjoyable
An interesting one. He's definitely an eclectic songwriter. didn't know this is where "Coconut" came from.
Great album title, I feel like Harry would have loved twitter
Unbelievable that this guy and John Lennon were bffs for like 3 years
- Ooh I quite like this, it's cute - It all seems quite pleasant - Doesn't blow me away or anything though, just consistently nice - Not sure what's going on in 'Early in the Morning' but I sort of like it - I don't know what genre this is - 'The Moonbeam song' feels like a departure, much smoother sounding - Didn't care particularly for 'Down' - 'Without you' is the most popular song and I can see why. This song is fantastic, reminds me of some of my all time favourite artists - why is he doing that (put de lime in de coconut???) - well it's not bad per se but???? - I'll never leave without you is also really good Favs: Without You, I'll Never Leave Without You, The Moonbeam Song Umm overall: it's fine, it's fun, and Without You is easily the best new song I've found because of this, but there are a lot of not-particularly-interesting songs on here too, and aside from the one song I doubt I'll ever listen to this again 3 stars Each album from this ranked so far 1. Jeff Buckley 2. Beastie Boys 4. Pretenders 5. Elvis Costello (I changed my mind)
Tempted to give this a four. I started listening to the remastered version but found the original and listened again. It’s good. I recognized Gotta Get up, and Coconut of course, although not his original version.
Didn't think I knew who this was, and then I heard Coconut and realized I did. I also recognized his covers of Let the Good Times Roll and Without You having heard them at some point in the past I guess. Most of the rest of the tracks were just okay to me. Jump Into the Fire was an easy standout as the best on the album for me.
Never heard the original version of Coconut before. RIP Dr. Sweets.
Название альбома наверное самое ахуенное, что я встречал
Excéntrico e inesperado.
Gefälliges Songwriter-Album mit karibischen Einflüssen vom "amerikanischen Beatle".
Enjoyable! I had a good time with this one. I guess this is where ‘lime in the coconut’ originated from. Jump Into the Fire is a banger, as is Si No Estas Tu. Good listen, but not enough to punch up to a four star for me
Pretty good
Some good tunes here. Nice album.
gotta get up down without you
You don’t expect much looking at the cover and seeing a comical album title but this album is really solid. It’s mainly pop rock but it’s done is several different ways that show Nilsson’s range and ability as a singer. Coconut is a classic and such a great silly song. Without you and jump into the fire are two totally different songs but are executed very well and are definitely worth revisiting. This album was a pleasant surprise. 7.4/10
There's some interesting stuff there and I can see why this would have been huge in the early 70s
Why choose adversity when you can be white in the 70s?
I hear a lot of Beatles in this, especially Paul's influence. I find the most popular tracks on this (Coconut Song, Into The Fire, and Without You) the most annoying. He really started out well with the first two track though.
3 bangers! Gotta Get Up, Coconut and Without You (I thought that was a Manilow song). The rest was fine.
Gotta get up is a good song. Only listened to the first couple.
Surprising number of huge hits on this. Really enjoyed it, but nothing too outstanding. Somewhere around a 3 and a 3.5.
Did not know who this man was before today. But now I have a name to go with some very classic songs.
wide ranging and very creative - subtle and yet pronounced at the same time. I like it.
There’s a tremendous amount of artistry here, and his voice is extraordinary, and used so interestingly. At its best (“Jump Into the Fire”), it’s soulful, intelligent, Beatlesesque mastery; at its worst (yep, both “Without You” and “Coconut”), it’s some corny novelty nonsense. This is the fine line of eclectic pop.
Couple of good songs, not the biggest fan overall
Hold up this is so fucking Beatles coded. I’ll admit this is one I wasn’t particularly looking forward to, as I want super familiar with Nilsson’s stuff. But this gives heavy Sgt peppers and early 70’s solo Beatles vibes. Tapers off on side two otherwise this would be an easy 4 for me. It’s a great 3.5. I’m sure it will only get higher the more I revisit
Knew none of Nilssons music apart from Without You. Glad to have found this, a bit before my time but I've enjoyed listening to it Early in the Morning and Driving Along were the highlights for me, not sure what he was smoking when he recorded Coconut but whatever it was I wouldn't mind some
I hadn't heard of this artist but I knew the song without you.
70/100 Favourite Song: Without You
Wasn’t super engaging to me. 3.0
I liked this album I would give a 3.5
I didn’t realize how many songs I know were by Harry Nilsson. Good for a listen once but won’t again.
Album shmalbum Very strange album. Some absolute bangers I never knew were this guy, surrounded by some absolute crap
Been on the 'should listen to that' list forever, decades. Now I've been forced to, I'm underwhelmed. The big ballad actually felt better when Badfinger did it, Coconut loses out on the Tarantino context, but Into the Fire is a beast even without the helicopters. The rest of the album feels like indulgent filler in a time when McCartney and Floyd and others were dripping with full coverage of both sides
Whimsical pop, recognized "Coconut"
this album was really just ight. ive been listening to a lot in this genre recently. light 3 top 1 the moonbeam song 2 gotta get up 3 without you
Chill, pretty nice, maybe I would listen again
He never really worked for me back in the day and that hasn't changed.
Interesting, not what i’d usually listen to. Some very funky songs which i really enjoyed, a few famous songs that i never knew who sung them.
Very croon-y Some song sound relatively modern sounding (in a Beatles-y way) Other songs are straight honky tonk
Un álbum conciso, repleto de buenas canciones, sin muchas pretenciones. Además contiene una de las canciones románticas más icónicas de la historia de la música pop.
So many hits on thos thing!
A strange blend of straight forward powerful ballads, sort of kitschy-novelty songs, and almost experimental Pet-Sounds type stuff. It has a Beatles-y sound to some of the songs and I also get a Kenny Loggins vibe on occassion. Seems like he should have been more famous. 3.7
I knew of “without you” before listening and I was surprised that this album is a lot more up beat than I expected. I liked it. I recognized a lot of these songs but thought they were from other artists.
It alrigt fucking schmilsson 💂🏼🥾
Glad I found this.
Best Song: Coconut. Just a beautiful trainwreck of a song. What possessed him to put on that weird vocal affectation? Who prescribed him this medicine? How many limes did he put with the coconuts and drink them all up before performing this song? Worst Song: Without You. How is this overwrought ballad the most popular track on this album? Overall: From the album title to its artwork, Ol' Harry Nilsson seems to have a heavy dose of self confidence. The result is an album that's fun while it's here, but largely forgettable.
This album was ok. It was definitely a "pop" album of the time, where it sounds engineered to make hits rather than express an artistic concept. Not amazing, not horrible. Solid 2.5/5 -> 3/5.
Good music.
Feels a bit disjointed. Going from without you to coconut is quite the transition. I was impressed by the drums on jump into the fire prompting me to read up on the drummer. Apparently the guy suffered from schizophrenia and murdered his mother.
That Coconut song is dumb as hell, but there's some decent stuff here.
Can describe it in two words (not perjoritively!) - easy listening! 3.75/5
I know of Harry Nilsson, and I know a couple of these songs, but I never put 2 and 2 together. This was a fun listen! I have a soft spot for this genre of "your uncle or your dad's favorite pop songs," so I'm into this. Standout songs are Driving Along and Without You - which I could not help but sing along to when it started playing.
Appreciate the good songwriting. Won’t be going back to listen regularly apart from one or two songs. Favourite: The Moonbeam Song
Wonky, cooky, and playful. Not really my forte of music, but can be fun every now and then.
the spiders Harry. That was fun. Side B better than A. L heard this album (more than once at a friend’s house) growing up, I had only heard the hits on the radio, never from start to finish. Always wondered how good the album was because ya heard so much about it back in the day. Never liked Coconut (but Uncle Eric did, although the only way to hear it back then was to own the vinyl or on the radio) and that song got a lot of play. Truly glad to have finally heard this album in its entirety. Jump into the Fire is a great, deep cut, throw back that I remember (haven’t heard in over 40 years) and evidently still like. At some point I will go looking for Nielson’s greatest hits to see what else I’ve forgotten about. (2.7*s)
I like this guy. Never heard of him but knew a few songs. He has got some good stuff here. Well rounded. I was into it but could have done without the last song. Love the album title and cover lookin like a true McPoyle.
Not what I expected in a good way. Pretty decent collection of quick 70s pop songs. Didn't mind it. Never realized Harry Nilsson was the source of Coconut or of Without You. Probably won't go back to the well on this but glad I gave the album a listen as a result of this list. 2.7 stars
Love the song Gotta Get up. Also now I know who originally did the coconut song. Did recognise Without You also. Rest of the album is pretty boring though. 3 stars
- good vibes - pretty good - wouldn't add to playlist tho
Not bad, some good covers nice production, lyrics are not the greatest but all round a decent listen.
Ik vreesde voor een meme door coconut maar was eigenlijk best prima, Beatles sfeertje
Some fun drinking songs for the townie bar jukebox, some flawless ‘70s pop songs, and sometimes, both at the same time. Sometimes it leans too basic or too weird and it takes me out, but definitely a solid time with some essential tracks.
Álbum agradable, dirigido más hacia un público pop que a crear canciones con letras increíbles o composiciones fenomenales (salvo por algunos grandes momentos). Escucha entretenida. - FAVTRAKS: Gotta Get Up, Jump Into The Fire - LEASTFAVS: Early In the Morning, Coconut
Deserves 3 stars for Coconut alone. Has an eclectic collection of music, but it's hit and miss.
I guess you'd have to be in the mood for this. Just not a mood I'm often in 😂.
I didn’t get the album at the start. My first impressions were that it was a satire and parody album, but then there were some actual songs that came off as genuine. I think the album is trying to be tongue in cheek and genuine at points, which is cool and unique. Granted, it’s at the cost that some songs are just bad. Standouts: The Moonbeam Song, Without You, Jump into the Fire, and I’ll Never Leave You.
The Beatles scurry mercilessly through this record. I was surprised to find this was the man who created the hit \"without you.\" My other favourite was \"the moonbeam song\", which I found enchanting. I can appreciate this album, and believe it would sound delightful spinning around on a record player, but it fell short in patches in terms of musical and lyrical variation. It has the emotion of a film soundtrack, and the production of a vinyl record. There is a story here, and with some more turns on the turntable I might be able to unravel and enjoy it more. It is also incredibly beatles-esque.
I was pleasantly surprised by this. I'm not sure why I was so unexcited when I saw his name but I was proven wrong. Tones of Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello. Multiple songs on here I didn't realize he performed.
Kinda gives Beatles vibes but without the invention of their later years. Middling 3.
Very listenable. Not really my style.
Don't recall knowing this artist or album, but the songs certainly rang some bells. Generally pretty enjoyable. A few steps up from classic singer/songwriter junk of the era, but I wouldn't quite call this "rock."
The whimsical title didn't inspire me with much hope that I would enjoy this, but it was alright in the end, if a tad bland. Didn't realise Without You was Harry Nilsson but there you are.
Jump Into The Fire was on the Shaun White Snowboarding soundtrack and maybe it was just the context of the game but I always thought it was like a 2000’s rock/funk/alt jam. Even though this album didn’t totally click for me on first listen, I recognize good songwriting when I hear it
This didn't really do much for me. Nothing is truly bad, nothing is truly great.
3+
Nothing crazy
Put the lime in the coconut! Enjoyed this album more than I expected to, would like to check out more.
Bright Beatlesque pop rock. A little sappy at times, but pretty breezy and enjoyable. Best song: Without You
Pretty good, very relaxed
This is the Harry Nilsson guy? Did he coin Nilsson Schmilsson? That's pretty catchy. The music is good.
Has a nice singer-songwriter pop vibe... ala Randy Newman in places as well as a John Lennon influence/flair. Without You is miles ahead of anything else on this album for entertainment, though i'll admit Coconut is quirky and fun. Most of the rest is pretty pleasant but not all that memorable.
6.5/10 Very peaceful lovely little folk album. i can tell it is pretty iconic for its time. i got some beatles vibes def which were nice. My favourite songs were the love songs. Faves: without you ill never leave you
Ok, without you is a classic. Last two tracks are also good. The rest is goody two shoes cringy stuff.
I'm hesitant now whenever boomer pop stuff comes up on this list but I actually liked this. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could
This is a nice bunch of soft rock/folk rock songs and then all of a sudden… “Coconut” which is just bizarre here. Not a lot of congruence among songs on the album but most of the songs are solid.
Not bad
I saw the artist and thought this was one of them dudes from one of the most recent shit, boy bands. It isn't, so bonus right there. Have to say this album surprised me how much I enjoyed, being from the the early 70's. Nice range of mellow to some bangers to a song you'll never get out of your head after you listen. Yea, I'm talking the Coconut song. But shit, I still liked that song too. Not that I want to pick on one song, but besides, I'll Never Leave You, I liked everything I heard. Jump Into The Fire probably my favorite, but again, I liked them all. I remember Without You being played on the radio as kid and was a close 2nd to Jump into the Fire. A couple side notes, The GAP band also did a song called Early in the Morning and the Cars did a song called Let the Good Times Roll. Both great songs and great bands. I dug this album. Can't say it's anything I would listen to on a regular basis, but I have enjoyed my listens after the last couple days. This is a good 3.5 for me. Struggling whether to scoreboard it a 3 or 4........ 3.5
There's a good 1-2-3 punch with Without You, Coconut, and Let the Good Times Roll, but besides that, it's kind of middle of the road or worse. Ends on an overwrought note with I'll Never Leave You.
A couple of monster songs in the day. Without You reminds of some lonely times during Middle school. Jump into the cooks! Mixed blessings.
2.5 - The name is funny. I knew one song off of this, The Moonbeam Song, which I love, so I was expecting to quite like this album, but it was just okay. The Moonbeam Song and Without You are pretty good, but some of the other songs actually irritated me, like Coconut and Jump Into the Fire. I wasn't impressed by the beginning of the album either. They honestly kind of sounded like worse Billy Joel... It made me surprised that the good songs on here are so good when everything else is so meh. I'll Never Leave You was alright, but not as good as the best songs. Usually I'd give it a solid three since it has multiple songs I like, but the songs I didn't like bog it down enough that I'm giving it a 2.5.
The one standout on this, “Without you”, is fantastic and has more than stood the test of time. “Jump in the fire” would probably have been a great song if they had cut it down from 7 to 4 minutes. I was pretty board with the rest. Average 2.5/5 rounding up for the one great track.
Great and classic album, specially for without you.
Surprisingly liked this more than I thought I would as strange as the compilation was to me.
A weird one, sounded like a musical soundtrack. Definitely one of those 70s weird albums. Not sure if it was comedy or not, the album title makes.me think yes!
you really made me listen to an entire album solely because you wanted me to hear the coconut song
Enjoyed. Went back to listen again. Knew a few :)
The album doesn't convince me. I found most of the songs a bit lame. It was nice to hear the original Without You again. I was actually only familiar with the cover version by Mariah Carey. I was very happy about the Coconut song, which I only knew as a cover version from the Muppet Show. All in all, I find the album uninteresting.
Fun old stuff. Put the lime in the coconut.
Overall listenable. Better than Scott walker
Some classics in here - never thought i knew his music. Enjoyed it.
Rating: 6/10 Pretty good album overall. The first few songs were just okay, I think the album really picks up starting with Without You. The music and melodies become a lot more interesting and enjoyable and his voice stands out more. Favorite songs: Without You, Coconut, Let The Good Times Roll, Jump In The Fire. Worst songs: Driving Along, I'll Never Leave You.
When I was a kid I listened to a Little Mermaid cover album that had "Coconut" sung by Sebastian. I never thought I'd listen to the original. Other than that this album was fun. In some songs Nilsson definitely sounded like a Beatles member.
Not consistent but some good tracks.
Sorta interesting for the time period
Holy shit, this is where Coconut came from!? The pop and rock tracks are good. I think the opening song is the best. I'm not normally a fan of ballads, but Nilsson makes his stand out with some fun instrument choices (like the banjo on I'll Never Leave You). Early in the Morning sucks though. I listened to the original recording by Louis Jordan and it's so much better. The scourge of white blues brings this album down.
It was a solid, chill listen, but not necessarily what I would come back to. Liking Gotta Get Up and Early In the Morning so far. Pretty relaxing. Without you solid Didn't realize this is where "Coconut" came from. Chuckled when it came on. Enjoyed listening to Jump in the Fire.
Always loved "Coconut" song. 🥥
Three tracks stood out to me - 'Gotta Get Up', 'Coconut', 'Jump In the Fire'. Everything else is fine, nothing bad just nothing I'd be motivated to return to. My core memory of Henry Nilsson comes from the only time I saw Sonic Youth. (Starlight Ballroom in Philadelphia. RIP). This album is on as they are coming on stage and the music is brought down for them to start. Thurston asks the sound person for more Nilsson so he turns 'Coconut' back up. Thurston jams for a second before saying 'ok that's enough' then they launch into Incinerate.
I mean it's alright like
Out of all the three stars so far, this may be my favourite. Great sound and some songs I recognised (hello Gotta Get Up!). Favourite track: Without You.
Idk what I expected but it certainly wasnt this silly groovy fun record. It was a good time but I dont see this sticking with me.
I can’t believe this dude is responsible for lime in the coconut. Interesting blend of songs and well done vocally
Good
Was ok
There are five kinds of HN songs, each corresponding to the stars of the scoring system: 1. The boring as hell rock song (down) 2. The borderline novelty song (coconut) 3. The good rock song (gotta get up) 4. The quirky pop rock song (together) 5. The grandiose pop ballad (without you, all I think about is you) This leaves this album at the score of 2.6
Harry reminds me of Billy Joel in his songwriting and vocals. He has some classics on here that I enjoyed.
First listen Saved 4/10: Gotta Get Up Early in the Morning Down Without You
It definitely sounds different than a lot of 70s music. There’s a lot of variation in the songs in just a short amount of time. I also find it funny that Jump Into The fire takes up a fifth of the album but I’m not complaining because it’s a jam. Other good songs are Gotta Get Up, Without You, and Coconut. Overall a solid listening experience that was a nice way to start a Saturday morning. Three stars for me.
Some sleeper hits on here. Easy to listen to and enjoyable, but I probably won't be going back to this album.
Well, this is a pretty smooth album of songs. It's inoffensive. I think the standout track is 'Without You'. The low point is 'Coconut'. Overall, I prefer my music to be a bit edgier than this. 3/5
Hey! There are a couple classic tracks on here, and overall a solid album. I was unaware of this artist, while being very aware of these tracks Gotta Get Up and Coconut. Overall, pleasant listening - but not overwhelmingly good.
Niet heel bijzonder maar gewoon prima
Aight
It was OK, but I'll never listen to it again.
The album cover gave me Big Lebowski vibes, and I think The Dude would like it. I liked a couple songs I never heard before. Jump into the Fire was a nice surprise. I'll be listening to this album again. 3.4 stars
I didn't realize how many of these songs I already knew going into this album as someone who vaguely knew the name but had never listened to Harry. "Gotta Get Up" gained new fame from Netflix's "Russian Doll," which is where I knew it from. It's a great jam to kick off the album—it kind of sounds like what would happen if Billy Joel and the Beatles did a song together. I definitely get why this guy was known as the American Beatle. His style is very eclectic and experimental in the same way the Beatles were in the late 60s, and a lot of the instrumentation sounds Beatles-esque. He even sort of sounds like Paul McCartney on "Driving Along" and "Down." At other times his voice and the music bare some resemblance to Aaron Neville, Hall and Oates, and the Beach Boys. I had no idea he covered "Without You"—as a millennial, it's always been a Mariah Carey song to me, and that version remains my favorite. But I probably like the original Badfinger version second best; sorry, Harry. I also didn't know this dude was responsible for "Coconut." What a weird (and cringe by today's standards) song ... and yet, inexplicably a jam. But it gets a little annoying after a while too. Conflicted feelings about that one. Putting it after "Without You" is kind of hilarious, though. "Let the Good Times Roll" sounds like another weird hybrid of the Beatles ("When I'm Sixty-Four"), Billy Joel, and honky tonk. The harmonica solo is fun. "Jump Into The Fire" sounds like a mashup of "I Fought the Law" and "Mony Mony." It's a good song, but it goes on too long. The drum solo is cool. I wasn't a huge fan of "The Moonbeam Song" or "I'll Never Leave You," though I appreciate the different movements the latter goes through, almost like a classical piece. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 4. It's pretty good, but it has a few clunkers for me.
я не знаю как это оценить
Okay so I loved this album. It felt like something I could really groove to. Pretty sure I accidentally listened to it twice but overall really enjoyable 3/5
Very endearing
cool paul mccartney songs
alcune carine alcune inascoltabili e una molto bella. si sente la mancanza di un MC come Kendrick Lamar
Enjoyable Beatlesish fun
Really powerful beautiful voice, lyrics, and dips into some amazing blues production. There are some great tracks here, it's just a shame that all this talent is used to make songs like coconut lol. 3/5.
Dare I say, I enjoyed this album?
that was fun could i write poetry to this? y
It's a pretty ok record. I like "Jump Into the Fire" a lot.
I never knew that he wrote some many songs that I knew.
Some good tracks here!
This was pretty fun
