Reviews (page 9 of 13)

I liked it.

A couple of strong tracks

I was trying to figure out why this “okay” album is on the list, and finally realized that it is EXACTLY mediocre. You need to hear it before you die because it isn’t good enough for heaven or bad enough for hell. Exactly 3/5 but not a smidge more!

Editor's Note: This album was accidentally placed here. It is supposed to be on the 1001 Albums you'll be dubiously convinced to listen to based on someone's curious fascination with mediocrity before you die or you slowly decline in discernment until this album seems beautiful... otherwise known as death.

Spank me hog

Not a dan

There are some nice songs there, though perhaps I'm missing a bit more energy. Some songs could do with more percussion. 7/10

This is okay, I really don't understand the Harry Nilsson hype. 'The Point' concept album started autoplaying after and I actually enjoyed that more than this.

7/10 Highlights: Gotta Get Up Coconut The Moonbeam Song

6,5/10 Highlights Gonna get up

3 out of 5. Definitely more banging than finding a man in his robe, but Coconut ended up annoying me a little bit.

Gotta Get Up 3.5 Driving Along 3.3 Early in the Morning 3.4 The Moonbeam Song 3.2 Down 3.6 Without You 3.4 Coconut 3.2 Let the Good Times Roll 3.2 Jump into the Fire 3.6 I'll Never Leave You 3.3 Score: 3.37

This is an interesting album, but not so sure about early 70's quasi-soft rock/pop. Gotta Get Up is kinda catchy. Nothing bad, nothing great.

Definitely fun at times, not so much at other times. Would relisten to at least some of the more fun stuff.

He's kind of giving Brian Wilson on the cover, but as we all know, he's the American Beatle, endorsed by Lennon and McCartney personally. Unfortunately, Coconut is one of his biggest hits and very annoying, with the rest being pleasant enough but never coming off all that special (I much prefer Badfinger's original version of "Without You"). When it comes to American Beatles, give me Emitt Rhodes any day. Between a 2 and a 3, but as a Natasha Lyonne fan, I'll be nice because of "Gotta Get Up"

shepuda lime in da coconu

Didn't have much expectations heading in, but this was really solid.

Delightful

Always thought the title is kinda goofy. Nilsson Schmilsson sounds like a nickname someone gave to him in primary school. The album itself is interesting. Opens up with 2 straightforward but good songs, then Early in the Morning hits and it's kind of a headscratcher. The Moonbeam Song has pretty vocal harmonies but not super interesting sound overall. Down is kinda proto-Billy Joel, at least some of his more lively stuff. Without you is a great ballad, has some of that Beatles grandiosity to it that I really like. But why did he think that putting Coconut right after it would be a good idea? Not only does it not much the vibe at all because it's goofy as fuck but also he does this really annoying accent on it. The final moments are solid but a bit inconsistent. I quite like the album but not enough to give it 4 stars.

This was fine, but the best songs on here are covers

Without you is an absolute classic. But I want to know what he was smoking when he wrote about putting a lime in the coconut.

Love the album cover. Not quite so sure on the album. Its a good length so have listened to it a few times and whilst its generally very pleasant (and i can see the Beatles comparisons) not much really lands with me. Without You is unfortunately in the played to death camp and Coconut is on the wrong side of fun. I do like Jump into the Fire - that has a groove.

That's not my taste in music - But ok

This was a fun album to listen to. Airy and light, which was not at all what I expected.

Great album name. Decent songs

It wasn’t hard on the ears but didn’t endear me to explore further into the Harry Nilsson catalogue.

This was a pretty good album in it's time but doesn't hold up too well today. But I still like to put the line in the coconut and drink it all up... 😆

uh-oh! don't know every song on this album, but know a couple and am fond of those that i do! edit: primarily liked the songs i had already saved, but definitely a good isten nonetheless!

Pretty much everyone knows "Without You" I'm sure, but I did not know it was from Nilsson Schmilsson.

Nilsson’s cover of “Without You” is, well, absolutely definitive. Nothing else on the album is nearly as strong. And one of the other singles, “Coconut,” which is sung in some “island” way, is borderline offensive. What a mixed bag!

Had some very strong moments but overall pretty boring to me. Had no idea the lime in the coconut song was gonna be on here lmao.

The first few songs had be pretty bored and wondering how much more was left. Then Coconut came on and I woke up. Super fun song that I for half my life I thought my dad made up when he would sing it around the house. I didn’t realize they were this guy. Next couple songs were good too, also ones I didn’t know were Nilsson. The rest was pretty mediocre at best. And I am too familiar with Without You. I really just don’t like it. So, about three or four songs saved this album that I was counting the run time on.

Veldig positivt overraska. Lukter beatles.

Good lil album

More childhood am radio. Some really good songs, some really bad songs, and some really fun songs.

It somehow sounds both distinctively unique and all over the place at once.

I was looking forward to this one as I already knew a few of the songs and that some of my favourite artists held Nilsson in high regard. In total though, this is too kitsch for my liking, with too many of the songs veering into camp experimentation and playfulness which feels of its time. No doubting the creativity and songwriting skills. Elsewhere, a small number of the songs show a heightened prowess and great vocals but this is dampened by some less than impressive vocal moments in other tracks. It's surprisingly inconsistent.

I will never become the biggest Harry Nilsson fan but this record is really good. The opener is really great.

big ELO vibes on the opening tracks - love the light organ/clavinet-style instrument on 'Early In the Morning'. Trying too hard in the post-Lennon/Ono world

Ett par bangers, ett par olyssningsbara

Classic tunes, but a bit kitch? Russian Doll vibes.

Put the lime in the coconut! Another song that I had no idea who sings this and if I ever did look, i'd say "Who the heck is Harry Nilsson?" and move on. Pleasantly surprised when it came on while listening to this album. This album is all over the place and it was difficult to peg just what type of music I was listening to. From pop to jazz to emotional ballads to the humorous "Coconut", it had a bit of everything. Hard to believe Without You and Coconut are on the same album......let alone consecutive tracks. It's grown on me after a few listens and the album cover gives Marc Rebillet vibes.....so i'm going to imagine that Harry Nilsson is just as playful and goofy.

Pretty cool sonically, very familiar songs that I wouldn't have IDed as this artist.

Aunque sólo sea por la clara influencia en Lennon y esa canción eterna que es "without you", este disco merece buena valoración. Es irregular y a ratos caótico.

I definitely see the comparisons to the Beatles, though I don't think Nilson is quite at the same level as either Paul John or George Still, one of the best written pop albums I've ever heard. The final three tracks let it down a little, but this was still a great listen. This is the first album on the list so far that I'd never heard of prior but would consider relistening to. Fav Track: Without You 7.5/10

Ihan mukavaa musiikkia, ainakin yksi klassikko, joka tehty coveriksi myöhemmin. 3/5.

I didn’t know who Hary Nilsson was, but then heard this record and knew two of the songs off of it. I was flashed back to the Rules of Attraction instantly.

Put de lime in de coconut

3.2/overall okay, but not much stood out

I like Harry Nilsson in theory, but I’m not sure I like him so much in practice. All respect to the Beatles, I can’t quite see where he was the best songwriter of the era. I truly wanted to like this more than I was able to like this. Middling Schmiddling

Some great songs on here and some not so great- I’ll be so happy if I never hear coconut again. Who knew he wrote without you (‘Ken Lee’)?

Enjoyed that - thought I didn’t know them but I was pleasantly surprised

This album has it all! It really runs the gambit from a few genuine hits, a couple clunkers, a few nice grooves to drive to, a pinch of cheesyness, and a Spanish version of a hit on the same album as the English! BTW: Is Harry Nilsson the godfather of putting the "schm" sound in front of words?! I genuinely want to believe it! I had fun listening to this album.

This was quite nice, with a couple of songs I didn't know were his originals

Fun, good harmonies!

Easy listening similar sound to Beatles era

This one was very new and strange to me. I don't think I was familiar with this music style, and yet, I feel I may have heard some of the songs previously somewhere. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I can feel this is good music, well-composed and well-produced. It made me think of old rock and The Beatles. The disc felt somewhat happy, and silly and harshy and daring. It's not my cup of tea, but I can feel it is good. My personal rating would be: 7.8/10. mini0n [02/09/2025]

Sounded like the missing link between The Beatles and ELO. It was definitely a two star album, but I'm bumping it to three stars as it was short and mostly fun. The Coconut song was awful, a reason to never play this album again, without being ready to insta-skip it.

Nice piano I might listen again I don't think kylie would like It

Herbie Flowers on bass *chefs kiss*

I think I didn't know who Harry Nilsson was... but this was a pleasant surprise listen.

More fun than I thought it would be

Not for me

Just a good, whimsical slab of 70's rock. Jump into the Fire is great.

1 star for every 10 minutes on this album

Unfortunately nothing really interesting here, despite the hype Best Song: Down Rating: 5/10 Stars: 3/5

Has no idea I’d be able to sing along to three of these songs. Not bad.

This one was ok. I'd heard rave reviews about Nilsson's work, but upon actually listening to this one, I was only really impressed by a few songs. The good songs on here are really good, but the bad ones blow (looking at you, "Coconut"). My favorite by far, and the standout for me on this album, was "Jump Into The Fire". The songwriting, instrumentation, and structure on this one all combine to create one of my favorite songs I've listened to in a while. The break after the initial portion of the song is done that leads into the drum and bass section is electrifying and serves to bolster this album all on it's own (fuck the coconut song)

Jumped Into The Fire has jumped into my most listened

Fun wee bangers

OK album held up by a few songs that I think people only think are good because they prominent and have featured in films. A 2 out 5 album pulled up to a 3 out of 5 album by a few 4 out of 5 songs

I had no idea Mariah Carey's "Without You" was a cover 🤯 Some recognisable tunes on this one, I remember Coconut from an old advertisement but don't think I'd ever listened to the full song until today. Is Coconut racist? Drum break in Jump Into The Fire makes me want to fight Will definitely listen to this again. Some of the demos sound like Brett from Flight Of The Conchords

I’m upgrading to 3 starts for the Spanish version

Better than I thought. Pretty solid actually

Some really nice (and well known) songs. The rest is ok.

Some really nice melodies, and some great tracks 'Without' and 'Jump into the fire'. Despite this, I don't think I would relisten to it anytime soon, as I think if I was in the mood for a singer songwriter from this period there would be albums higher than this on the list. Really respect some of the ideas presented though, as there are some really fantastic moments!

Je n’ai pas vraiment accroché avec l’album, hormis la chanson Without You dont je comprends totalement le succès!

A lot of these songs are more low-key than I expected and a bit boring. The upbeat ones are nice though. And whilst I appreciate the original, I prefer Mariah Carey's version of Without You. It's a beautifully written song though so kudos to the Badfinger guys

Not my style! Felt like a number of ballads, then a few songs that are cliche by now (coconut especially feeling dated).

Put de lime in de coconut

This album was a rollercoaster, man

You put the lime in the coconut and you drink them both up. That song got wild. The rest of the album felt like someone who was supposed to be famous for the time but the songs didn’t hit the same way. Doppelgänger music.

Yo I fw gotta get up heavy

It’s fine ig. Pretty forgettable and I hate the stupid lime and coconut song. Without You is a banger though

That was downright entertaining. Quite a variety of styles, I can see where the appreciation of his work comes from. Almost a 4 star release, but not quite.

This one started off strong but then tapers off quickly. I was impressed with the unique instrumentation at first but then it slides into a strange and sad mix between generic songs in a DreamWorks movie and songs you would hear at a Disney Cabaret.

Büro, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Läuft gut durch.

I am whelmed

Way better than I thought itd be. Some songs were genuinely really good. Fave song: Gotta Get Up Honorable mention: Coconut (what a weird fuckin song)

Bro has a great voice but the style is just hella mid. Pace is too slow for some songs and it just didnt hit. Its not bad tho. Favourite Song: Without You

War okay, Coconut war scheiße

What a fun album! You put the lime in the coconut and you drink it all up! Surprised it wasn't the most popular song on the album, but there ya go. The drum and bass solo that wrap up Jump Into The Fire are great, and would have made a better ending to the album then "I'll Never Leave You" which felt comparatively weak.

Enjoyed. Obviously I know the big hits (although I know the opener only from Russian Doll), but overall, I liked the rest of the album too. The two closers were irritating, with the overlong sections of repeatedly detuned bass on Jump Into the Fire, and the overly decorated vocals on I'll Never Leave You, so they bring it down to a 3.

I really liked this album. It's pretty low-key and very nostalgic. This record definitely seems like something that wouldn't have necessarily been out of place in the 1940's, yet also feels fresh. The production is top notch and I am excited to hear more from him!

Love it, what a guy!

67/100.

I've never heard of Harry Nilsson, but I like his style. (And not just his wardrobe choice in the album art) I was not expecting the sound that "Coconut" had when it came on. Especially after the ballad of "Without You". I think I knew Tyga's lyrics were sampled from someone, but was not at all expecting Harry. This is a fun album and I enjoyed it. Favorites: - Down - Without You

I did not use a private session for this one. I am aware of Nilsson, but never really listened to him actively. Of course I have heard several of the songs on the album, but never really knew to attribute them to him, could because Nilsson gets covered a lot. Anyway, fairly solid album, but won't make it on steady rotation.

Well, finally got this album. Been curious about it due to what is honestly a really bad cover art that looks like the cover art to a random record you run into in the record shop thats being sold for $0.50 because literally no one has heard of that band. And the album is inexplicably in bad condition. Although it weirdly fits too. That said pleased to see that this is a case where the cover art is not indicative of the quality of music on it. Definitely can see why Harry Nilsson was considered the American Beatle. Gotta Get Up and Down are very Beatles-esque, although Down has the more bar blues feel of an American band. Didn't realize this was the Coconut band either. Can't particularly call it a good song (although I oddly do like it, it goes weirdly hard), but it's been used/referenced in a lot of stuff I like (Alan Wake) so there's that. And Without You is an all timer of a song though, holy. Overall good record. Kinda inbetween a 3 and 4, but since I don't really see myself going back to it, probably will land on a 3. If the rest of the record kept up with the style of Gotta Get Up, would probably have gone with the 4.

It had 3 songs I enjoyed, two of them I liked back in the day. Not sure it’s enough to bump whole album to next level.

Knowing very little about Harry Nilsson, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. “Without You” still sounds better coming from the mouth of Mariah Carey, and “Coconut” made me smile - I hadn’t realised that was a Nilsson song. All in all, this was an easy listening joy.

Lennon loved him as an artist and a man. Without you is astounding really. But is this an album with one great song, and a really great song, and a couple of tragedies. The rest of the album is fine. Crack musos, ex-Clapton (Gordon), future Elton (Caleb Quaye), Chris Spedding(future Womble)and Herbie Flowers (space oddity among many many other great songs)! really lift things. The songs are competent and even pleasant to listen to. Nilsson dies young and drummer Jim Gordon’s story is just too awful. So does this make it a worthwhile album? I suspect this one won’t make many future editions.

goooood shit, feels like its got a few fillers in tho would prefer to just listen to some of the singles i think

Some lovely music on here. The album starts strong and ends strong a really solid album

Not bad, some good ones

Not too bad

Fun listen, good sounds, vocals reminded me of George Harrison and Paul Simon.

I’m interested in hearing this because I’ve never listened to one of his albums before. This is pretty good. Some songs I really like but others feel like the don’t have a firm footing in what they are going for. It’s feels really experimental and that it was a commercial hit is wild. Like in the coconut is always what the doctor ordered. Really just a showcase of musical styles. Overall very nice, pleasant, and fun!

Big Harry did not make this album for me. It’s pretty meh in a Beatles-esque way. There’s nothing really bad on here (okay Coconut is outright bad), but there is nothing standout good either. He can sing, and the songs are fine, but his can’t be arsed attitude to getting dressed for the cover art is probably the best thing about this album for me. This fact is counteracted by the drum solo in the middle of Jump into the Fire which I didn’t care for at all. I’m hugely indifferent towards this album.

Me he guardado Gotta get up y también Without you (es ñoña, pero que le vamos a hacer).

The world must have felt a little empty in 1971 as the Beatles were breaking up. Harry Nilsson seems like he's trying to pick up where Lennon-McCartney left off, but it sounds like minor-league work. I did laugh out loud when I realized that this is the Coconut song guy.

I liked it and enjoyed a few of the songs enough to listen again to those. As a whole the album didn’t stand out in my brain though. Writing this review a couple days later I can say I liked it, but didn’t love it, will be nice to hear those couple songs I really liked out in the wild and know who sings them

Didn't love this. Many of them felt like kids songs, the kinds I used to listen to on cassette, simplistic and a bit boring now. Without You is probably the best song. One star just for the margarita scene in Practical Magic with the Coconut song.

Wow. I’m familiar with Nilsson’s iconic heart wrenching masterpiece Without You and the banger Coconut. I didn’t skip one song on this record. Great song writing, tasteful use of certain instruments. What a beautiful album. Jump Into the Fire is a banger and I’ll Never Leave You 🤯 Perfect album for a roadtrip playlist.

Sounds good, easy listening, don't feel there's that much to say. simply enjoyed it.

From the first notes I can tell this is like another Randy Newman album. Apparently all of these songs are going to be about hating having a regular life...it's like a whole album of Ants Marching. Without You is the hit and it's a cover. It is a good song though. Coconut is so goofy, but I do like it. Goofy is probably the best way to describe this album...still better than Randy Newman. Oh come on now, he did a collaboration album with Randy Newman. Of course they did. Let The Good Times Roll is very Good Old Boys-esque. It's Henry's hallucination music from Goodfellas! Jump Into the Fire is good or does it only seem that way because I associate it with an all time great gangster film?

Overraskende. Gøy, fint og veldig bra produksjon. Et par skikkelig fine låter, men også litt mye eksentriske valg for min del.

3 stars only cause of Coconut lol

Blessed with one of the most angelic voices in all of "rock", Harry Nilsson is somewhat of a "what if" story. This album is clearly the high point of his commercial success, but he has other worthy albums that never broke through. The 3 hits are the obvious highlights here, with a noticeable drop off for the other songs. There's a movie out there somewhere that tells his story - it's more than a little bittersweet. I can't give this more than 3 stars. "Without You" written by fellow sad sacks Ham/Evans of Badfinger is the highlight. That song alone is worth 3 stars.

Some pretty good vocals for sure. Without you is such a great cover

Lime in the Coconut! Wow, I knew Harry Nilsson's work, just not by name. This album is pretty fun, but certainly didn't knock my socks off.

Álbum divertido. Moondrop May.

Solid album

Harry Nilsson classic sound and album. If you like early 70s sounds, this is your jam

and award for worst album title goes tooooo........

I’ll Never leave hoy Without you 5/10

Music schmusic.

friendly music but not very catchy or interesting. i understand why it was popular innthe sixties. cute title haha

Didn't set my world alight but a pleasant listen. It's a shame when the best song on your album is a cover.

Without You by Nilsson is a monster of it's own. Known it like forever, but never knew the name of the singer. At least that did this list for me. The rest of the album is really not bad, but nothing I would listen to on a regular basis.

Had never really heard of Nilsson and was really pleasantly surprised. Musically and in terms of songwriting I thought it was great. Just maybe lacking a little bit of flow from one song to the next.

Good vibes, but didn't really catch my attention. I liked: Gotta Get Up, Driving Along, Without You, Jump Into The Fire. Coconut was a hard listen.

Tot d'aquesta èpocae recorda als Beatles. Alomillor es sa meva ignorància. "Without you" ja l'havia escoltada :).

Harry's earnest voice was felt in every note he sang. I loved the organ used throughout. I had my ears heard this in 1973 I'd given it five stars but my gen X 2025 ears award it three.

gives vibes of mike and the mechanics, but also some of the piano rock of billy joel/ben folds/etc. i like it mostly. did not know he was the lime and the coconut guy (god that song is so annoying)

Decent album, no real bad songs, some good, just not quite enough good to be great.

Without you > Coconut > Let the good times roll is certainly an all timer of three track groupings. Enjoyed this one, beatles-esque, apparently he worked with Lennons solo career bandmates

Ultimately it didn’t hit for me. It felt pretty uneven. Maybe I need Nilsson in smaller doses?

Thats ok

Good album, don’t think it needs to be on this list though

Strong start, but novelty and schmaltz ruin the second half. 3 and a bit.

Without You is definitely a great song and played out in the early 70s. And Coconut was a great funny song and also everywhere in the 70s. Otherwise, I'm glad I listened to this...but really most of these songs are at best not horrible. Middle of the road....

Erg gevarieerd plaatje.

De man is net zoals Paul bijzonder veelzijdig.

Was looking forward to this one, I love Everybody's talkin but had never heard much else from Nilsson. Way more Beatleesque than I expected. Serious shades of McCartney especially on Down and Jump into the Fire (fantastic tune), which were by far my favorites. Was taken aback by the schmaltz of Without You and the irritating Coconut, so that knocks it down a few pegs for me. Overall, a pleasant and tasteful 70s record, but dont think everything on here is essential.

Without you huge banger, the rest more forgettable but still really pleasant to listen. Pure 70's bliss

A pleasant album with enough heart, even in its more novelty-focused tracks. Just what the doctor ordered.

Surprised me what tracks I knew. Quite like this album, will listen again!

Interesting album for sure. A mix of covers & originals, with various styles showcased. Nilsson's version of "Without You" is a prime example of a cover song that is considered better than the original. His composition of it has basically become the version most people are familiar with. "Coconut" is just absurd playfulness, but obviously a fun & catchy tune. "Jump into the Fire" is the standout track for me, personally. Nilsson's talent on full display.

such a fine album...

Pleasant and easy to listen to, with nice instrumentation + vocal + harmonies. The album is varied enough that it doesn't get too boring, but individually the songs can be a bit repetitive. Decent 70s bluesy soft rock/ballads. Reminiscent of Bread, the Who, and the Beatles on some tracks (a few goofy romping Paul-esque tunes). I preferred the softer songs with grand instrumentation, like the ballad "Without You", and the classical "I'll Never Leave You", as well as the more understated "The Moonbeam Song". "Coconut" was... interesting.

Album war unbekannt. Einzele Songs als Ohrwürmer bekannt gewesen

A few songs were surprises like Without You but otherwise it was just ok .

I know the name and his legend. Never listened to a full Nilsson album before. First impression is that he has a sunshiny energy within his vibe. Both "Gotta Get Up", "Driving Along" & "Down" have a McCartney feel for sure. The album has some impressive listener counts. 32M listens on "Gotta", 175M on the massive hit "Without You", over 50M on "Coconut" & 14M on "Jump Into The Fire". People know this album. This appears to be an important 1970's album. I wasn't a fan of "Early In The Morning", "The Moonbeam Song" or I'll Never Leave You", not even a little bit. "Without You" is such a giant hit, covered by oh so many people over the years, that this album likely made it just for that one track. "Coconut" is best known from 80's commercials for 7-Up. "Let The Good Times Roll" is a great cover. I had no idea until today that "Jump Into The Fire" was Nilsson, good track as well. I would not add this to the Top 1001 outside of the chart success and influence of the key anchor song. But I enjoyed learning about it. 3 stars.

More boring than an evening with Celia

Likeable and varied for sure.

The Without You album. American, music sounds British. Poppy 70s folk. Goes down easy, very nice little album.

Some good bits. Nothing great, nothing terrible.

Some really nice songs, with great orchestration. Humour is nice, bust as odd as it sounds, i wish he took it more seriously. When he just plays the songs, natural musicianship. Strong 3/5

Cover is ok. Boring but not too lame I guess. 1. Fun song. A cover? Also over played in so many movies. 2.ok. Breathe esque. 3. Great blues song but without the blues. So... 4. Ok. I suppose I have to be in the mood but then I'd just listen to Weyes Blood or something. 5. If this way sung by a better blues singer ít world rock. It's OK as is. 6. A cover of a great song. Doesn't improve on the original but if you can sing then it's still good. And he can sing just fine. 7. Another cover. Decent. But honestly this song is a campy novelty. 8. Good cover of a good song. 9. This is funky. I like it. 10. Ok song. OVERALL: An average album with one or two highlights.

Quirky

He’s got a great voice. I thought side one sounded like McCartney. First album I’ve noticed the songs being shorter than they appeared. Apart from the singles it was still good nothing stuck around long enough to be boring, and this guy. Really can sjng

point0.

A good folk album with one big hit and one novelty song.

Some fun songs, some good songs, but not one particularly within my personal taste in music, so can't give it more than 3 stars.

Album #2 Enjoyed

The one word I think of when listening to this album is interesting. There is a lot going on lyrically that seems odd, but just makes sense. Blues influenced rock at its core, but there are tinges of other genres all over this thing. 6/10

He’s kind of like Billy Joel and I am not a huge fan. There are so nice songs on this album but it is not totally my jam. Also he wrote without you!? I did not know that.

The album title pretty much sums up my feelings about it. Not one I think I really needed to hear, but it's okay that I did.

way better than I expected and the same as I expected all at the same time.

Very 70s sounds. Coconut is a very playful track and Jump into the Fire is a great track. Overall decent

This reminds me a lot of Paul McCartney, however the first couple songs feel a little underdeveloped. They feel like they should go on for another minute, but they just abruptly end. Still a good album though, not great. High 3.

This was a fun listen. I got the sense that this was one free white boy. Discovering Harry Nilsson made “Without You” which has been heavily licensed and then also “Coconut” which Tyga interpolated for his first ever single, had my mind blown. Favorite Track: Jump Into The Fire

odd little album! but a fine enough time

Blind album and artist. Had a few really good hits but the album as a whole felt a little choppy between tracks and the hits were almost anti-hits. Like he wanted to write 2 different albums.

Alright, typical Nilsson stuff

Reading some reviews of this album after listening to it, I read that this man was called 'the american beatle', and I totally understand. This is not just similar to a Beatles' album in its style, but also in its structure, as it is full with experimentation, and almost every song feels different from each other, but I don't it reach the grandiosity of the british band. This album starts with two nice and catchy rock songs, being 'Gotta Get Up' a really nice opener. Then you have 'Early in the Morning' which is more of a slow track, a bit of atmospheric to call it something, which doesn't really add anything to the album being honest. Then you have an acustic and a piano rock song which leads to the biggest song of the album, 'Withou You'. The previous songs are nice but nothing too special, one being led by an acustic guitar and the other one being a piano rock; and following them, you have a balad. Honestly, nothing interesting. I felt like I've heard this type of song a thousand times. Maybe a pioneer for its time, but still mediocre. After that, you have the strangest song of the album, that being 'Coconut', and all thanks to the style of sining, because the instruments don't really add nothing to the weirdness. Wish it had. Finally, you have two more songs that reminded me a lot to Elton John, and... that's not really a great thing for me; which they precede the closing track, a nice balad with some great instrumentation which adds a nice layer of intensity. So, before wraping up the review, one more thing that I need to mention is that the production is stellar. Everything sound incredible. With that said, I have to give this album 3 stars. I think that, technically speaking, it lands in the middle of 3 and 4 stars, but emotionally speaking, I feel more a 3 than a 4, since the album couldn't make a impact on me.

Listened to this on a car trip yesterday and remember liking it, but I don't really remember anything about it. 2.5 stars I guess. Rounding up to 3

Didn’t know anything about him but do recognize a few songs. Pretty good! Cant tell what’s original vs cover though. I get some Beatles coming through interesting and varied.

Quirky, quite Beatles like. Coconut is a great track. Didn't hit me in the soul but was fun to listen to.

Some classics on this one actually, not bad

Pretty good, a little cheesy.

Quite eclectic. A little hippy edge, s few blues tunes, the coconut song and Jumping Into the Fire. Enjoyed this album.

started off slow but I warmed up to it, I liked it a lot more than I initially expected.

Very uneven

Reminds me of Alan Price and The Kinks of the same era. Some good songs and some very ordinary songs. The guy definitely had something but it hasn't aged well. Ok but I won't listen to it again.

This can't be considered a cult classic as it was too popular but it reads today like one, oddly so, as if its charms have grown indiscernable. Overall, it's perfectly fine, and decently cool but other than the cut redeemed by Tarantino, it's telling that top cuts have better known versions by others and the faint whiff of novelty songs don't help either. Not really as good as the high-profile endorsers would lead one to believe. Also, was the cover an inspiration for Big Lebowski?

The tone is all over the place, and although surely intentional this makes it hard to take seriously. Has a general tone of something the world thinks I should like but I cannot see what’s supposedly so special.

I may be misjudging the 70s record-buying public, but I bet a fair few people were more than a little perplexed if they bought this LP on the strength of mega hit Without You. I'm sure there are plenty, but I'm struggling to think of a more straight-laced, sentimental pop ballad being sourced from a more eccentric collection of songs. Not that this is a bad thing - knocking around with a Beatle obviously rubbed off on Harry, although this album seems more like a post-Beatles McCartney effort than anything by his drinking buddy, Lennon. Much like Paul, Nilsson slips in and out of musical styles as effortlessly as he might change his shirt - never to show off, but still with a slight vaudevillian wink in the direction of those who noticed the pastiche. Of course, like Macca, the songs often come across as little more than doodles - riffing around in a certain genre or style but never quite with the discipline required to come up with completely realised song as the end product. That said, the musical tomfoolery pays off in spades for much of the first half, which is great, the second side kind of runs out of steam despite having Without You and Coconut on there. Fun to listen to, and I can appreciate why it is on this list, it gets a solid three stars from me. It may even be the second best album to use Cooper Black as the cover font...

A bit of rock, folk, pop, and soul wrapped together nicely in this singer-songwriter package with a bit of oddity to it. I’m frequently reminded of other artists when listening - the Kinks, Beatles, Beach Boys, Donovan - but it still sounds original and not a rip of others. Arrangements range from sparse to elegant. It’s kind of all over the place, but it works. Generally the songs are good but I don’t see what the big fuss is here. It’s all fine music, but not many notable highs or lows for me.

I kind of assumed from the man's name and the irreverent album title that this was some sort of crooner, so a pleasant surprise to find out just how wrong I was. It's not exactly what I'd necessarily choose to listen to, but it's a very solid and confident album, and I enjoyed the range of styles--and the impressively radio friendly length--of most of the tracks. My favorites were probably the first three tracks ("Gotta get up" through "Early in the morning") plus the singles "Coconut" (it's so nice to finally have a name to put with one of my favorite novelty songs) and the surprisingly long "Jump into the fire". I also appreciated the overall brevity of the album; short and to the point, and only slightly maudlin at times ("Without you", "The moonbeam song" and "I'll never leave you" were a bit too much for me, although I'll admit I'm not familiar with the original "Without you" by Badfinger, so it's probably not fair to criticize a cover version that pushed a half hearted ballad into saccharine territory).

I honestly loved the range of this album from softer rock ballads to vibey blues. Gotta Get Up is incredibly catchy and unique, honestly think that song is genius. The Moonbeam Song sounds like a compilation of late 60s/early 70s folk in a generic mashup that somehow still manages to be boring. So, that was a skip to me. Coconut is problematic and weird but iconic I guess. Just adds kinda to the bizarre-o range on this album. This album had a few saves for me but it wasn’t a no-skip. I enjoyed it!

coconut was fun and the rest of the album didnt leave much of an impression to me

Great instrumentals. Doesn't fit listening habits but interesting nonetheless.

Weirdly jammy album, especially gotta get up

Good, if slightly childish

Lime in the coconut/Everybody's talkin' guy

Lidt beatles/bob Dylan vibe. Chill hygge pop/rock

Nice voice good guitar but couldn’t make it past third song

Not sure how i’d never heard of this dude before as i knew a fww of the tracks. Strong 3 could be a 4 if i spend some more time with it.

Decent 60s-ish rock music.

A decent album with a few cool songs. Favorite tracks: "Gotta Get Up," " Coconut"

Solid one! Some songs are a bit sleepy, but he has clearly trouble getting up in the morning so that’s forgiven. Best one: ‘Without you’. Got lost in ‘coconut’. 3/5

Several hit songs, but some filler on the album as a whole.

Easy listening classic 70's

A great voice and excellent song writer overall.

Good album

Album cover didn’t fill me with much hope.m. How wrong was I? Good album with some songs I recognised but didn’t know the artist. Now I do. Eclectic.

I was nervous seeing the title. Another sch—son album after Oedipus Schmoedipus was so awful. But this was generally inoffensive. It was fine. Pleasant even.

Was surprised to enjoy quite a few of the songs in this album. Added this artist to floccinaucinihilipilification.

fun piano driven rock.

Very surprised when put the lime in the coconut showed up. And eclectic album; not really my taste

I recognized a couple of these songs but not an artist I hear a lot from. Certainly not a bad album by any means. Perhaps a bit too long. Jump Into the Fire is a banger. 5.75/10 (2.875/5)

An album of simple songs with solid songwriting without really much that makes it stand out to me. 3 cover songs feels like a lot for a 10 song album. Gotta Get Up was probably my favourite track, although I do enjoy a good novelty song like Coconut and now I understand the "beer in the coconut" joke from the Simpsons.

It's fun and nice and super pleasant to listen to.

Cool album. Very groovy. 3

Gutes Album. Besser als ich erwartet habe.

5/10 Decent album, a couple good songs, but not really an album I'd listen to all the way through.

Never really been a fan of Harry Nilsson, but I commend him for “Without You”, and there are some groovy 70s tracks like “Jump Into The Fire”. It didn’t blow me away though.

Rating: 3.5/5 | Favorite Track: Without You --- This is my first introduction to Harry Nilsson, and I was pleasantly surprised with this album. Fairly standard classic rock sound and altogether pleasant listen.

Harry's collective works deserve four stars. But I'm not sure any individual album warrants more than 3 1/2 (which is good -- it's 7 out of 10). Rounding down to 3, but Harry is better than that.

Ken Lee, ee libidibidouchoo.

I didn’t mind Nilsson Schmilsson. It definitely had a variety of musical styles throughout. Turned out I did know a few songs from this album; Coconut, Without You, Gotta Get Up, and Jump Into the Fire. While I didn’t mind this album, I’m still on the fence on if this is something I would own and listen to again. A few of the songs are a tad campy. However, the only song I didn’t care for at all was the closer. It’s another middle of the road ranking for me. I’ll go 3 for Nilsson Schmillson. 3/5

Some groovy, some weird, some bad

Was not sure what to expect with this one but it was better than I expected. Not my favorite thing but was pleasantly surprised. I had only heard gotta get up before and enjoyed Early in the Morning the most.

Listened to most of it. Good tunes and soulful vocals.

Best song was “Jump into the Fire.” Loved that bass line. Easy to learn, but still easy to feel it for the whole song. Album as a whole was not exactly my style, but a couple songs that I enjoyed.

Midssonn Schmidssonn First few songs sound like Beatles knockoffs, after that it's a little more interesting. I like the stupid wacky stuff like Coconut honestly but overall mid; it's like he's copying a bunch of styles but doing them worse.

It's fine. Maybe supposed to be 2.6 but I'll give it a 3.

Pretty nice

3.5 - some good songs but I don't think it is a revolutionary album or piece of art.

Just OK.

Enjoyed it more than expected. Without you is a bit cheesy though. Good suggestion!

A bubbly and fun singer-songwriter album. Not much to go back to on this album but it was a pleasant listen. 7/10

Lindas canciones.

The big hit single 'Without You' is indeed the worst song of the album, as is often the case with those. Nice listen otherwise, I was unaware of this artist.

3.5 - loved the production, very Beatles-esque. The songs were good, enjoyed side one more than 2

***An ok album

Nilsson, you could have had it all. One or two great songs but the rest is mediocre

Some well crafted songs from a great singer - songwriter. Not all entirely to my taste but I can appreciate his talent

Inesperadamente bueno. Me lo escucharé varias veces más. ¿He entendido el concepto del álbum? No. Pero ha sido un slay nonetheless

Well now I know who to blame for that fucking lime in the coconut song. 2.5

Fun album and songs from my youth that I didn't know were by Harry Nilsson.

Interesting album cover. Fun, bouncy opening track. Second track was decent, but things went down from there. It all sounds okay production wise. Good album length. I'm just not into the mediocre blues inspired tracks or the uncomfortable Coconut song.

Nice 70s singer songwriter album. You'll know more than a couple of these. The others fit in nicely.

There’s some great songs here - how Nilsson isn’t at minimum on classic rock radio is a mystery to me. Jump Into the Fire would get the dads going! Coconut sounds weird as ever - it’s like Kokomo from a more obscure artist.

Surprising mix of styles. Sounded more 60s than 70s however.

Album starts off with a bang, almost circus like. But not completely unpleasant. Driving along kind of goofy. Third track, Early in the Morning, is solid. Coconut is odd but cool, and I'm sure I've heard that one before. Jump into the Fire is another great track. End track definitely on the weird side, and lots of other filler that sounds kind of dated. But I guess this album sounds like it fits the required experimental chops to make the list.

I feel like everyone has heard at least half of this album without knowing it.

I was impressed at the musicality, and then I was bored by the banality.

Fun listen

After listening some of the previous albums that I shouldn’t listen to, this was a breath of fresh air

Solid album. Jam in Jump Into The Fire was pretty damn rad.

Songs are pretty damn solid, definitely heard a couple of them before without realising who Nilsson was. Production is super great and the songwriting and performances is pretty solid. Doesn’t overstay it’s welcome or feel unfinished either. Could be a 4/5 if it wasn’t for the Coconut song. Man this song is dazzling in how annoying it is, not to mention the stupid vocal inflections and accents. This song really got under my skin in the worst way. I can see how it’s meant to be a fun unserious almost comedic break in the album, but it just doesn’t work for me. Highlights are: Without You and Gotta Get Up. 3/5

Interesting. I didn't know the name of the person who did these random songs from my past

Most of the songs were merely ok besides Without You. Initial Listen: 7/10 or 3.5/5

Dude's got a great voice but the arrangements are a bit... quaint. His own songs are far better than the covers; "Jump into the Fire" is a serious banger and sounds about 10 years ahead of its time. The covers, though, are trite and forgettable.

Quite enjoyable!

Perfectly pleasant. I recognized a few songs that I didn’t know that I knew, which was a nice, albeit slight jarring experience.

Without you/ Si No Estas Tu - toimii

Classic American rock. Listening to "Without You" by itself and not as part of a trashy rom-com movie gives it the required space it needs :) Reminds me of Steely Dan in production sound and variety of rhythms and different songs. Not exactly my cup of tea, but definitely some good tracks in there - the popular ones are obviously very popular.

Without You, Coconut

Has some bangers on it but a couple misses for me. Was hoping it would be more comprehensive. Coconut is oddly the first one I heard as a child, but Without You is by far the best.

Oddly sounds like a Beatles knock-off album. Standard late 60's/early 70's pop rock with some goofier songs added in. Definitely some solid tracks, but an overall decent to forgettable album. Top tracks: The Moonbeam Song, Without You, Jump Into The Fire

All the reviews mentioning The Beatles make me wonder if any of you have ever listened to The Beatles? But with that said, this was fun. Bizarre, but fun.

I enjoyed this album. Nothing noteworthy to bring up unfortunately. Just a quality album, relaxing listen.

This was ok - i enjoyed a few songs.

A very fun a clever singer-songwriter record. Stands out from the pack with its witty lyrics, very stylisticly diverse set of songs, and even delivering the definitive rendition of a little known songs by a little known group. But remember folks, if you sing like this, you may never have a long lasting singing career, as good as it may sound. Key tracks: The Moonbeam Song Coconut Without You

This was nice enough, but kind of generic. The coconut song is quite weird and doesn't feel like it goes with the rest. I never knew Without You was written by this guy - Mariah Carey's version is better

Nice voice and piano playing, but the compilation of tracks an also the lyrics feels very random - not like an album with a theme.

Good album little wierd and enjoyable. A few really good songs and the some cool voice changes and falsetos that make it unique for its time Like it a lot

Why does it sound like a cross between Paul McCartney and Billy Joel?

Teils sehr gut, teils bisschen schräg

varies in quality and in tone but overall fun
