Reviews (page 3 of 14)

Unbelievable to think that this was their debut album. Amazing power pop songs that really defined the genre.

Is there a more fun album?

Perfect summer cruising album

I really needed this after just having to suffer through Soft Machine's "Third". This is why I'm here. To listen to some of the greatest artists of all time at their best. And maybe discover a few greats I hadn't known before. The Cars are legends, and this album is amazing. Hard to pick just one for the 1001 playlist, but I'll go with "Just What I Needed" ~ 4.6 Stars

This is one of those perfect albums. It's a great listen start to finish. What a debut by The Cars.

This is like a greatest hits album.

one of my favorites

Listening to "Moving in Stereo" at the office: perhaps the very most dangerous game.

One of my favorite albums.

Really great! So many interesting sounds throughout.

Didn’t realize how awesome the cars are!!!!

This is my favorite album by them. "My best friends girl" and "just what I needed" are my favorites, but the whole album is fun to listen to. Gonna see if I can learn a few of these on guitar.

A fantastic album. The five star albums are coming rapidly now. I didn't know The Cars before I bought this album, after I read about it in the 1001 Albums-book. They are as good as unknown in Europe. I thought they were a kind of plastic keyboard-driven bubblegum-pop act, but this turned out to be a very very strong album. It's obviously very carefully made, all the songs contain surprising and original details. And there are some great melodies. What more do you need? Highlights? 'Just what I needed', of course, 'You're all I've got tonight' and 'All mixed up'. Nice one.

Just what I needed

So many working parts to these pop songs! The little flourishes and the vocals are so good.

This plays like a new wave greatest hits. Pretty solid all the way through expect for 1 track that is skippable in I'm In Touch With Your World.

Great positive vibe and excellent production.

Hot damn! What a 1, 2, 3 combo with "Good Times Roll", "My Best Friend's Girl", and "Just What I Needed". There are so many radio hits on here. I didn't realize that this album should be in the conversation with best debut albums of all time. I really liked the rest of the album as well. "Moving in Stereo" had some fun synth in it. I was singing along to "Don't Cha Stop" and "Bye Bye Love" by the end of those song despite never listening to them before. The only song that I didn't like was "I'm In Touch With Your World". It was very jarring after those first 3 hits. This is probably another 9/10 album for me, but I'm going to give it another listen to see if it can tip into the 5 star range.

Catchy, well-crafted pop rock songs. Vocal, guitar, keyboard hooks with steady drums keep it interesting. Great three-song run of classics to open the album. I should learn this album on guitar to increase my skill, some of the leads are super interesting!

Might as well be a greatest hits album. 9.7/10 Best Tracks: "Good Times Roll" "My Best Friend's Girl" "Just What I Needed" "You're All I've Got Tonight" "Bye Bye Love"

The Cars Greatest Hits Vol. 1 Literally every song is a banger.

A perfect pop album. This is what we lost when pop musicians had to be pretty too. Seriously though every song is amazing and that this isn't a greatest hits just blows me away.

This album serves as an age check during 'that one song'. Ric Ocasek nailed it with this album, its full of chart toppers and massive hits. 5/5

I love this album. When I got to borrow dad’s Infinity in high school, this and The Long Run by the Eagles were the two albums I listened to on repeat. Great start to finish.

I can remember vividly when this album came out, I bought it. I spent hours listening to this on my headphones and it changed my musical tastes from the mainstream 70s rock/metal that I was listening to for the new wave music and then on to post punk, punk and alt rock. Every song is a standout for me.

Every track is gold. Just What I Needed is one of my all-time favourite songs

Solid bangers

## In-Depth Review of *The Cars* by The Cars Released in 1978, *The Cars* marked the debut of the Boston-based band and became a cornerstone of the new wave genre. Seamlessly blending rock, punk, and pop elements, this album is widely regarded as one of the most influential records of its era. Below is a detailed review focusing on its lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, along with an analysis of its strengths and weaknesses. --- ### **Lyrics** Ric Ocasek’s songwriting on *The Cars* is characterized by cryptic yet relatable lyrics that often explore themes like love, longing, and alienation. Tracks like "My Best Friend’s Girl" showcase Ocasek’s ability to encapsulate complex emotions with simple yet poignant lines such as: *"She’s my best friend’s girl, but she used to be mine”*[1][2]. This line captures heartbreak and nostalgia in a succinct manner. Other songs like "Just What I Needed" feature lyrics that are both introspective and playful. While not overly verbose or poetic, the lyrics remain engaging due to their conversational tone and universal appeal[2][3]. However, tracks like "I’m In Touch With Your World" veer into surreal territory with abstract imagery that some listeners might find less accessible[2][4]. --- ### **Music** The Cars’ musical style on this album is a masterclass in blending genres. The band combines catchy pop hooks with rock energy and new wave experimentation. Key elements include: - **Synthesizers**: Greg Hawkes’ use of synthesizers adds a futuristic dimension to tracks like "Bye Bye Love," giving them a space-age feel[2][3]. - **Guitar Work**: Elliot Easton’s streamlined riffs provide a rock backbone while maintaining a polished sound. His work shines particularly on "Moving In Stereo" and "Since I Held You"[4]. - **Vocals**: The interplay between Ric Ocasek's deadpan delivery and Benjamin Orr's soulful voice adds depth to the album. Orr’s vocals on "Just What I Needed" are especially memorable[1][3]. - **Rhythm Section**: David Robinson’s drumming is tight and restrained, complementing the album’s sleek production style. The music is undeniably catchy, with tracks like "Good Times Roll" and "Let’s Go" epitomizing The Cars’ ability to craft radio-friendly hits without sacrificing artistic integrity[1][4]. --- ### **Production** Roy Thomas Baker’s production on *The Cars* is impeccable. Known for his work with Queen, Baker brought a polished yet edgy aesthetic to the album. The production balances clarity with texture, allowing each instrument to shine without overwhelming the mix. Highlights include: - **Layering**: Synths are layered seamlessly with guitars, creating a dynamic soundscape. - **Vocals**: The vocal production ensures that both Ocasek’s detached delivery and Orr’s emotive singing are front and center. - **Minimalism**: With a runtime of just 35 minutes, the album avoids filler tracks, adhering to the principle that less is more[1][5]. While some critics argue that the slick production occasionally sacrifices raw energy for polish, it undeniably helped define the band’s signature sound[4]. --- ### **Themes** The album explores themes of relationships, desire, and modernity through its lyrics and music: - **Love and Heartbreak**: Tracks like "My Best Friend’s Girl" delve into romantic complications with a mix of humor and melancholy[1][2]. - **Alienation**: Songs such as "Moving In Stereo" evoke feelings of detachment and introspection through their atmospheric soundscapes[4]. - **Optimism**: Despite moments of introspection, tracks like "Good Times Roll" celebrate carefree enjoyment[2][5]. These themes resonate across generations, contributing to the album’s timeless appeal. --- ### **Influence** *The Cars* was instrumental in shaping the new wave movement. Its blend of rock energy with pop accessibility influenced countless bands in genres ranging from alternative rock to synth-pop. Artists such as Weezer and The Killers have cited The Cars as an inspiration for their melodic yet edgy approach to songwriting[3][5]. Additionally: - The album introduced synthesizers as a prominent element in mainstream rock. - It proved that new wave could achieve commercial success without compromising artistic vision. Its enduring popularity—bolstered by hits like "Just What I Needed"—cements its status as a cultural touchstone[3][4]. --- ### **Pros** 1. **Cohesive Sound**: Every track feels like part of a unified vision. 2. **Timeless Hooks**: Songs like "Just What I Needed" remain instantly recognizable decades later. 3. **Innovative Production**: Roy Thomas Baker's polished approach elevated the band’s sound without losing its edge. 4. **Genre Fusion**: Successfully blends rock, punk, pop, and new wave elements into an accessible yet sophisticated package. 5. **No Filler Tracks**: At 35 minutes long, every song contributes meaningfully to the album[1][5]. --- ### **Cons** 1. **Lack of Raw Energy**: Some critics feel that the slick production sacrifices spontaneity for polish[4]. 2. **Abstract Lyrics**: Tracks like "I’m In Touch With Your World" may alienate listeners seeking straightforward narratives[2]. 3. **Formulaic Moments**: While cohesive, some songs adhere closely to pop-rock formulas without much experimentation[4]. --- ### **Conclusion** *The Cars* by The Cars is an exceptional debut album that showcases the band’s mastery of melody, innovation in production, and ability to craft universally appealing songs. Its influence on new wave music cannot be overstated—it remains a benchmark for blending artistic ambition with commercial viability. While it may lack raw energy or lyrical depth in some areas, these minor shortcomings are overshadowed by its strengths. From iconic singles like "Just What I Needed" to deep cuts like "Moving In Stereo," this record delivers one classic after another. Ultimately, *The Cars* stands as one of the finest debut albums in rock history—a must-listen for fans of new wave or anyone interested in exploring how genre-blending can redefine popular music.

So good!

So many hits on one album. Amazing.!

Classic fun. So many catchy songs. Loved it.

Classic rock. Distinctive synth throughout. Lots and lots of classic hits.

I personally prefer Heartbeat City but this is an excellent debut album and a must have for any fan of the 80's. Rest in peace, Ric. You and the lads did good.

Always liked the cars and I had this album. This is the first one I might give 5 stars as a "Must Listen" making me feel that the whole must listen album thing is just 100% subjective based on your history, not based at all on how good the actual music is. I always found the cars lyrics fun--it's like they'd just make up new uses for words that rhymed wherever needed, this whole album is packed with new uses for old words and weird twisty little phrases that kind of work or might even sound deep if you don't look into them too much.

One of the strongest debuts of all time, practically every song became a hit. I've obviously heard so many of the tracks so many times that I don't exactly ever throw this album on anymore these days. But think you gotta safely say this was a straight up new wave pop rock masterpiece

Six out of five stars for the Cars. "Let them brush your rock'n'roll hair" alone puts this album among the constellations and it's not even from the best song, which is "Just What I Needed" - the best rock song ever. If Buddy Holly hadn't died in a plane crash but instead fell into a wormhole to the future and came back to 1978 as Ric Ocasek to show us the way.

Loved all of it! only 1 song I didn’t know

Love the Cars, what a classic opening album from an underappreciated American band!

To find out this was a debut and not a greatest hits album took me by surprise. I don’t know I knew and enjoyed so many songs by the Cars. Great album.

Amazing

Always admired The Cars and Ric Ocasek as a tight band and producer (see Weezer, Nada Surf, No Doubt) but don't think I ever put on this album or any Cars album fully. Probably heard it in the background when I was a toddler. This album is tight. Sure some new wave influence but Power Pop city. Catchy as F, guitars forward. Short and sweet from front to finish.

Excellent. Could be a greatest hits.

A perfect pop-rock album. 5 out of the 9 nine songs still get radio play (Good Times Roll, My Best Friend's Girl, Just What I Needed, You're All I've Got Tonight, and Moving In Stereo). The other 4 tracks are pretty good. I'm In Touch With Your World is so goofy with all the sounds effects - I love it!

They might as well have just repackaged this album when they put out their first greatest hits. It’s nothing but gold on here!

I never knew how amazing this album was! This is why I do this. To discover gems like these

I mean, it rules

One of the easier rates on the list. A pop rock/power pop record to define everything that precedes it. It's almost as if all 80s rock started and ended here

This is actually quite good. Those first three tracks are obviously classics. But I ended up really enjoying the rest of it as well.

now THIS is a proper album. notice how they didn’t make the album longer than it has to be while still maintaining unique personalities for each track? perfect amount of catchiness, perfect amount of boldness. chef’s kiss. elliot smith and david ackles, TAKE NOTE

Omg i love new wave so much i knew this was gonna be absolutely fucking great and boy was i RIGHT x

A very fun album all around some great gituar and keyboard combinations my favourite track is don’t cha stop by a long shot

Started out ok, felt pretty generic rock. But as I listened more and more, it got better and better. Just What I Needed is a classic, great song. Other fun songs were Don't Cha Stop and You're All I Got Tonight. They ended the album Moving In Stereo and All Mixed Up, both of which had really good music, great vibe. Overall most songs are 4s, with a few 3s and a couple 5s, but all together, this album just hits the spot. Best song: Just What I Needed

Classic.

The Cars were great and this album is pretty damn good too. Also brings back some wonderful 80s memories.

Amazing album. Feels like i'm going to an unknown family cabin to be murdered in a cool slasher

Baller status

This is great. Kind of proto pop/punk/new wave and in a good way. Lots of songs I'm coming back to. A great listen. Maybe this is a low 5. Like 4.7. But I haven't had a really really good album for a while so this is a 5. Best songs: Moving in stereo My Best Friend's Girl (some superb little guitar licks here) Just What I Needed

this is definitely one of my all time favourite albums, one hit after another, pure gold and the 2016 mastering gets even more out of it

This album is only 9 songs long, and 4 of them are bonafide classics, and that's not including Good Times Roll, Bye Bye Love and All Mixed Up. Seriously, inject that saxophone at the end of All Mixed Up straight into my veins. Just What I Needed is in the conversation for the best pop song of all time. This is new wave. 5 Stars.

I love The Cars. I love this album. Every song is catchy, fun, and a hit. No notes.

Ocasek and Orr are a lead duo for the ages. The Cars (the album) indelibly changed the sound of music in a way that people should write books about. Long live The Cars.

Loved listening to this. Something about the sound was just so juicy, sultry but upbeat. Can't wait to listen again

Leading the way of “Cool Rock” skirting the edge of comical, but laying down such intricate tracks mixed with the subtle synth, and backed by tasty guitar riffs and paired with exquisite production value and mastering. Perhaps the vocals push this the farthest into atypical territory and cast a bit of light on the comical tones. However, when considering other cool bands ala Cake or Devo, the Cars feel like the format to construct around. This album being the blue prints for jovial and tight rock mastery. It is in a class of its own, and stands today as music made for the sole purpose of having fun.

Excellent songs all around. Ric Ocasek has such a penchant for perfect power pop. Love this album.

LOVE THIS ALBUM!!! It has something really special about it. It was technically released in the seventies but it sounds quintessentially “80s” which says a lot about how influential the album was at the time. It’s wildly catchy and fun. The production is excellent, and it’s definitely dated but in the best possible way. Nearly everything on the album is a “hit” song. This is probably The Cars best album (the two following this one are both great) so definitely worth your time. Oh and it’s like the perfect length, does not overstay it’s welcome at all, not bloated just to pad the run time. Perfect album!

10/10 album, hands down. I’ve owned this for years and it’s one I can go back to over and over again. So far ahead of its time. The entire album is like a greatest hits collection as far as I’m concerned.

I practically wrote a dissertation for the last album, so i’ll keep this one brief: This album slaps. It bangs. It slays. It FUCKS. (Admittedly, it does drop off quite substantially after the first 3 songs but shhhh, details.)

Loved it

- the number of great songs on this release is frightening. The arrangements and production are perfect. The writing great and the guitar work is beautiful. Another perfect album. -

Thinking I can review this without even listening to it. When you're 12 - 13 years old, you don't have much money, so any album you buy is going to need to be really really good. Imagine spending a month's salary on something like an April Wine album because you like the one song they play on the radio. It's a big investment for a little kid. Record store guys were no help either, they kind of just wanted you out of the store and knew you could only buy one album. So they'll recommend it just to get the transaction over with. Once you get it home, the album has the song you like and 8 or 9 other COMPLETE DOGS! One's only recourse was to tell all your friends not to buy it themselves, at the risk of embarrassing yourself. This happens often enough, and you start to recognize from a cover alone (sometimes, this is not foolproof) whether or not the disc is going to come home with you. For a 13 year old, that Cars cover looks very promising. And the songs of their's that you have heard were strikingly new-sounding. Enough New Wave to stand out, enough guitar to not leave the well-tread rock 'n' roll path (reducing your risk!). Beginning to end, The Cars did not disappoint me. Every song killed. No dogs at all. And, they flowed, one into the next. I'm pretty sure I have this memorized - every drum fill, every guitar solo, every synth line, every word. The type of album I would come back to time and time again. And it worked so well because my tastes weren't all that sophisticated back then (are they now?), and this was music that, as I said, rode the edge of novel without being overly alienating. I'd give this 5 for Elliot Easton alone. But everyone else is equally (almost) as adept. Greg Hawkes' keyboards and Ric Ocasek's vocals season the rock undercarriage with an oddness that is appealing to a gawky teenager. I might not be this effusive if I never heard The Cars before, but it has been one of my ten favorite albums since it came out, and after listening to thousands of others, this still stands up.

You can really hear and appreciate how this album influenced the growth of what became so popular in the 1980s, as well as what continued to grow in popularity in the later alternative rock and indie genre of music.

Classic new wave-y power pop, with handclaps, harmonies, and hooks galore. And just great songwriting, to boot. I must’ve been skipping around when I last listened, because I don’t recall “I’m in Touch with Your World” which is mostly a bunch of cartoonish sound effects, kind of a waste of time time. I’m giving this album five stars nonetheless. Favorite Tracks: "My Best Friend's Girl", "Just What I Needed" I tried to choose one, but I am a sucker for handclaps in pop songs.

Until quite recently I assumed "Just What I Needed" was a song from about 2004. Obviously it isn't though. Because it isn't shit.

This album bangs. So many hits on this self titled album. Favorite song has to be "Moving in Stereo". The riff, the beat is hard.

I dare say this is an underrated group and album. I've always been a Cars greatest hits fan but never really listened to the albums. But this is a great album. There are a couple of lesser tracks in the middle but man people should be talking about this album more often. The first 3 tracks are classics. Then I heard some songs that reminded me of the Talking Heads and Queen in there. A couple of more songs that are awesome and then the end of the album with "Moving in Stereo" which blends right into "All Mixed Up". Great couple of tracks to end the album with. I should be listening to this one more often and people should bringing this up as an all-time classic album more often.

Bye Bye Love

BOSTON represent. We just hired Vrabel what do you want from me, we're tribal. All of the synth/key sounds are new wave perfection. This is a classic debut album having all the hits because they've had a lifetime to write them. But you don't deduct points for that...a debut album that sounds like a fully formed band. Also shout out to Ben (don't call him Bobby) Orr for being the better vocalist and general hot guy.

Boston guys have already spoken about the Cars legendary status here. As a result we’ve all heard almost all of these songs 1000 times before. But I still love the precision and intricacy of the parts, and how tight every song fits together( the opposite of the formless slog of the last album. Seriously fuck the Verve). Every component is important and adds to a much greater whole. Ive never been more mad at another musician than when palantoni and I’s shithead keyboard player in college didn’t bother to master the synth line in Just What I Needed and thought he could just wing it. Just completely misunderstanding the whole point of the Cars and why we wanted to play them. What a dumb fuck. On the other hand, I’m sure my completely blacked out attempt at recreating the guitar solo in the bridge was FLAWLESS.

The perfect companion album to another great debut new wave proto punk album from this process - Go Gos Beauty and the Beat. Both albums offer a lot beyond the hits. The front half of this album is a greatest hits, and the back half delivers on depth. I love Ocasek’s voice, the vocal melodies, the guitar high in the mix with the synth adornments. It’s kind of a kitchen sink of styles that somehow works perfectly. I’ve heard Bye Bye Love but not listened closely - such a tight and punchy climax to the album - a new favorite.

One of my all time favorites. Musically advanced

A serious classic anyone should enjoy.

Feels like The Cars is going into the party, and everything that happens in with confidence, and the way its meant to be. Funnily enough, I find majority of hooks to be predictable, but it just makes me want to sing along with it more. It doesn't feel like it's trying to be grand, or great, but it executes its confidence perfectly. Granted, probably won't be my favourite for a long time, but it's so fun now, and it's so listenable, and you can sing along with it, and I just feel like it's very well executed.

For anyone wanting to mistake The Cars as some empty pop outfit that just produced radio fodder, this (debut!) album should be a lesson that this band was awash in everything that makes great music. Creative songs, lyrics with odd poetic angles, melodies galore, excellent musicianship, sneaky good lead and backing vocals... And it's all presented in a detached, fully imagined package that somehow sparkles with personality. And damned if my favorite tunes aren't the radio hits ("Bye Bye Love," "You're All I've Got Tonight," and "All Mixed Up"). But the radio hits are timeless. This is just a fantastic record. I'm a psilocybin pony, you're a flick fandango phony You got your nuclear boots and your drip dry glove It's such a wavy midnight and you slip into insane You don't have to make believe it's you If the illusion is real let them give you a ride It's so easy to play up your breakdown Your rhapsody is blowing my cool It doesn't matter where you've been as long as it was deep She's always out the window when it comes to makin' dreams

This album is practically flawless and perfectly encapsulates the transition in sound that we'd start to hear from all bands in the 1980s. "I'm in Touch with Your World" and "Don't Cha Stop" make for a weaker middle because they're completely overshadowed by the incredibly strong opening tracks and the ending which perfectly crescendos with "Moving in Stereo" and "All Mixed Up." A masterpiece of a debut album and definitely one of the best albums of 1978.

To me, this is a timeless album that will never get old. The Cars really found the perfect balance between new wave and rock, appealing to a wide audience ever since I can remember. This album is one of my go-to choices whenever I’m looking for something easy, light, familiar, and uplifting.

Not a single miss on the whole album

This album is a classic 70s banger. Not What I Needed is such a classic. This album was ahead of its time. Kicks ass.

миша я люблю тебя

Possibly one of the best debut albums? "Just What I Needed" is an all-time classic, and this album is full of other hits. I was a little disappointed with "I'm in Touch with Your World", but the rest is filled with songs I've liked for years, so this still gets a 5 for me. Very deserving to be on this list

Favorite!

Another one I’ve been listening to almost my entire life. No skips. One of the best debut albums ever.

The band that, IMO, best exemplifies weaving multiple genres into a sound that actually sounds authentic and quite frankly, freakin great!

bingo!

Top notch

I have never paid attention to The Cars until last year. But it happened one song at a time, due to references, movies, and so on... slowly, i have ended up with several of this album's songs added to many different of my playlists. I think it became obvious that i love the album!! It is one of these albums that have some sort of "overall vibe" that it is undeniably fun to go through. The sound of the guitar is incredibly great, easy to hook on. The melodies, riffs... all. Perfect album i would say.

This was a great listen

I'm embarrassed to admit how much I love this album. The Cars was the first love concert I ever attended so there's a lot of nostalgia here. After all these years, I knew I'd like it but didn't know I'd want to listen to it straight through 3 times in a row! Does that mean I'm about to give this a 5?? Yep, I guess it does.

The Cars are synonymous in my mind with that ever so gentle and utterly polished with 80s smudge Drive you home song. I knew there was more to them from how others have spoken of them in glowing terms. Not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't glam infused post punk.. I recognise My Best Friends Girl of course, and Just What I Needed. The latter especially as Car Seat Headrest were particularly light-fingered with it on Not What I Needed, from Teens of Denial (a cracking album). These backing vocals are straight out of Fox on the Run by Sweet. Guitars and production are straight out of many post -punk bands of this era too numerous to mention. A perfect bridge between the two. Hmm, this is banger after banger isn't it. Yep. On second listen this is an absolute classic.

This record has to be one of the greatest debut records from any band ever. It is filled with high energy and style, and each song is as memorable as the last. Special shout-out to the incredible guitar solo on "Don't Cha Stop".

You think it has one great titty song, but really every track is a great titty song.

Oh, dang. I can’t remember the last time I listened to this entire thing. It starts out STRONG. The quality drops off a bit, but not enough to drag this down to a four for me. What a nice surprise. I thought this would be a 3, maybe a 4.

What a great timeless album. Do you like fun? You'll like this.

This was just what I needed, it really let the good times roll, and assorted puns. Truthfully, this is a monster album, not a single bad song on it.

Lots of hits on this one.

A fun album full of cool pop-y synth energy! The vocals, guitars and all arrangements work so well together. Lyrics are a bit silly sometimes, but honestly, it's just one good song after another. Reminded me a bit of Weezer at times, and sometimes talking heads. Overall great album that holds up to today.

So damn consistent and so damn fun

This is still a really good album after all these years. 5 stars or A-.

Just brilliant.

Just about every song on here can be on their greatest hits album.

I absolutely love The Cars, and I've been anxiously waiting for this album to pop up for me. I know this album really well from start to finish, and since I own it on vinyl, I love throwing it on pretty regularly. What a perfect way to spend a Wednesday, let's get into it! This album is absolutely fantastic from start to finish. With guitars driving the overall sound, keyboards filling out the sound, and simple but catchy lyrics, The Cars' self-titled debut is the pinnacle of late seventies new wave albums. The guitar hooks sound so simple, but the way the lead, rhythm, and bass guitars are layered adds incredible depth to the overall sound. The Cars have such a signature sound, but each song on this album is unique and instantly recognizable. In my opinion, no other new wave artist has guitars that sound anything like this. Going back to the keyboards, I love how they don't drown out or take over the overall sound of this album. This is guitar music, and the album never lets you forget that. The way that everything on this album is layered makes it one of the most accessible new wave albums of all time. As far as the individual songs go... I guess I'll just have to go track by track. "Good Times Roll" is such an interesting lead-off track to me. The song's title elicits a sense of something really up-tempo, but the song takes its time, adding layers to the sound as it progresses. The bright keyboard riff that kicks in about halfway through the song is pure genius. "My Best Friend's Girl" has some of my favorite guitar playing on the album, especially the lick at the end of the chorus. In conjunction with the handclaps at the beginning, this song has a retro feel that harkens back to fifties doo-wop or rockabilly. I imagine this is what the woman on the cover is listening to. "Just What I Needed" has my favorite keyboard playing on the album. That sawtooth sound is perfect, but it fills in the sound perfectly, still allowing the guitars to stay front and center. "I'm in Touch with Your World" is my least favorite song on the album, but it's still great. With Ric Ocasek's echo-y vocals, excellent vibraphone usage, and a space-like keyboard riff, it's easily the most experimental song on the album. "Don't Cha Stop" lives up to its name, with a fast tempo, great rhythms, and some superbly distorted guitar playing, accompanied by a great keyboard riff. "You're All I've Got Tonight" is an excellent blend of some of the best elements from the first three tracks, all with a great rhythm section. "Bye Bye Love" features an excellent blend of guitars and keyboard playing. This song is one of the best examples of this album's superb mixing. "Moving In Stereo" is my favorite track on the album, but by a slim margin. The guitar distortion, the opening vocals, and the simple drum beat give this song a haunting sound that sets it apart from the more pop-forward songs on the album. It doesn't hurt that I associate this song with Fast Times at Ridgemont High. "All Mixed Up" is a great closer, and I love the saxophone and keyboard arrangements on it. With a darker tone similar to "Moving In Stereo," it's a great closing track, and possibly the most underrated song on the album. Overall, this album is perfect. Every song is brilliant, and there's enough diversity to keep this album interesting. The Cars are a fantastic band, and it's honestly a shame that Heartbeat City hasn't made it into any edition of the list.

Such a strong debut album. The first three out of the gate are timeless classics, and with 5-6 of the 9 getting regular radio rotation from its release through the 80’s and beyond this is a hands down 5 for me. This album helped define the rock/pop sound bridging into the 80’s. Classic album cover too.

Power-pop synth rock at its finest. With 7 of the 9 songs charting and getting routine radio play it’s hard not to rate this all in. An incredibly strong debut that at the time had some saying it should’ve been called “The Cars: Greatest Hits” given the massive appeal. I’m sure this hits home more for those that grew up with these songs, but the strength of them still holds today. And who could forget the iconic scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High with Phoebe Cates emerging from the pool with “Moving In Stereo” playing?

The first few tracks of this felt like a greatest hits album. I've always enjoy The Cars without realizing I enjoyed The Cars (if that makes sense). I was curious how the rest of the album would hold up to the opening slate of radio hits. There are quite a few songs (including the hits) that sounds same-same but different. But, that's fine. It's definitely a cool sound mixing the riffs and vocals of the 70s (very Tom Petty-ish) with the incoming synth-sounds of the 80s. I especially appreciated the songs that deviated from the formula, like "Moving in Stereo". The album finished really strong. I wish I could give 1/2 stars because this is clearly a 4.5 for me; however, it's good enough that I'm going to bump it up to 5.

I have The Cars' Complete Greatest Hits, a double album that should have been stripped down to a single album. Still, there are plenty of great tunes on it, including my very favorite of theirs, "Drive." I always think of the Cars as ushering in a new 80's sound, where keyboards were added to guitar rock. I'm impressed that this debut album was released in 1978; they were ahead of the curve. The first three songs were worthy of their release as singles, starting off the album with a grounded understanding of what they are going for. I've always loved the guitar picking on "My Best Friend's Girl", a precise technical feat that sneaks into a tight propulsion of a pop song. We see the keys move from background ambiance to sharing center stage in "Just What I Needed," where they feature their own lead melody line. Kooky psychedelia is added to the Talking Heads vibe of "I'm In Touch With Your World," and "Don't Cha Stop" has the frantic energy of Sparks, though with less shifting of gears. "You're All I've Got Tonight" and "Moving In Stereo" are other hits, the latter really exemplifying their use of synths in catchy guitar rock. "Bye Bye Love" is a softer but no less up-tempo rocker. The Cars create a post-punk, pre-new wave sound that was pioneering in its day and remains unique to this day. Noone else sounds like them, especially in 1978. What the hell, here's a 5.

Great album. Emblematic of an era. Every song is memorable.

Maybe it's because I grew up in New England, but all of these songs are radio singles to me. So when I listen to this album, it sounds like a Best of The Cars, Vol. 1.

A Bye Bye Love, Moving in Stereo, és az All Mixed Up számok tetszettek a legjobban.

Did not use a private Spotify session for this album, definitely listened to it before. Ric Ocasek said something along the lines of "we did our greatest hits first", good line and some truth to it. Lots of classics in this album.

Unbelievably solid album that withstands the test of time. 5/5

Mabye this was the best of the first American new wave acts, more accessible and pleasurable than the Talking Heads; more consistent and better-rounded than Blondie. This record set an extraordinarily high bar that few other bands could ever get over, making it seem so easy and being so unabashedly stylish – this was how to put the final nails in the coffin of bloated arena/classic rock. The debut is a minor masterpiece, a clear agenda (non-grandiose) just about perfectly executed, way exceeding what was to come (spots of which were quite excellent indeed). Every song works – actually every note and sound effect – and the three or four stone-cold classics have lost not a bit of their tight and hooky sheen. Style and content forever!

After the scourge of punk came the tide of the new wave and The Cars were one of the plethora of bands that took to the change of scenery with gusto. Their beyond impeccable debut album does that and then some and more in regards to delivering the goods and even the lesser renowned songs on here (I'm in Touch With Your World, Don't Cha Stop, Bye Bye Love) feel like world-beaters. What's even more impressive is that the progress of the album as it were, in form of the demos, not only arrive fully formed but in some cases succeeds in being better than the finished product. Surely the songs that wound up not making the album (Take What You Want, You Just Can't Push Me, Hotel Queenie) offer up a tantalizing glimpse into a alternate Cars universe, but it is what it is. This is a new wave masterpiece, all killer no filler from start to finish.

Great album, Every song is a banger. Every track in every song is perfectly mixed and the production is super tight.

Pre-listening thoughts: actually kind of hyped for this one. I know a few songs from it and this is solid 80s pop/rock Post/during listening thoughts: this album bangs bro. Radio friendly music at its best. It’s quirky, it’s upbeat, it’s short, it’s definitely not like groundbreaking but I don’t think it needs to be. It’s just a good time overall. And baby, let the good times roll. 9/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: conflicted on this cause like need? No. Want? Yes Fav tracks: My Best Friend’s Girl, Just What I Needed, Don’t Cha Stop, Bye Bye Love, All Mixed Up (but I enjoyed the whole album fr) Least fav tracks:

Fantástico disco de debut de los Cars. Power Pop de altura con nueve cortes a cuál mejor. La fusión de los sonidos de la nueva ola con el rock duro da como fruto en este disco temas de gran altura como el exitoso "Just What I Needed". No le van a la zaga "Good Times Roll", "My Best Friend's Girl" o "Moving in Stereo". Me gusta mucho el tema de cierre, "All Mixed Up".

New wave classic loved it

Album rules. I’ve had this one in my library for a while, and I’ve adored The Cars for years, so it’s likely this will get a 4 or 5. It really strikes me as one of the best pop-rock/power-pop albums ever made. It just has some great tunes, a wonderfully dry and crispy production, and extremely charming performances. How do you top the first three tunes? “Good Times Roll,” “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “Just What I Needed.” I mean, wow. But the vibe continues through the whole thing. “I’m In Touch With Your World” is silly and fun. “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight” is almost on par with the initial trio of bangers. “Moving In Stereo” is a moody vibe, and its seamless transition to “All Mixed Up” is killer. Honestly, it’s a lot like the Boston album…it sets up a high bar of quality and maintains it all the way through. It’s the execution that pushes it to 5 territory.

after the dross of recent days this is Just What I Needed

have you ever heard a song and it ever made you think it could be used for a arcade machine because that's what i thought of the song just what I needed by THE CARS I think the song was good because it gave me kinda of an arcade kinda vibe and the rest was pretty good because of the singers voice i think this song was good and recommend listening to their albums

Knew it already. I like the cars

So many hits on one album. It's nuts that they're not a bigger band

Great album! So many hits on one album.

Still rips. No skips. Quintessential early 80's rock. Learn it, Know it, Live it. (And anyone not thinking of Phoebe Cates during "Moving in Stereo" needs to fire up Fast Times at Ridgemont High, stat.)

Five star album… nuff said

This is an excellent album. The hits just keep coming. I have heard this album many times and enjoy listening to it every time.

Masterpiece my friends....

Excellent

Not just a 5, but a contender for my favorite album of all time. Just chock full of amazing songs and fabulous instrumentation.

I really enjoyed this album. Yes, very tame, very non-unique, but it truly suited my mood and was equally pleasant in the background too.

One of those perfect and timeless albums. Plays like a greatest hits and it’s their debut. Absolute magic. Oh yeah and the Rhino HiFi vinyl is AMAZING.

Doo-wop style songwriting meets synthesized instrumentation, and the ‘80s are born! It’s one thing to be prescient, but then, on top of that, every track’s a banger.

Brilliant, really enjoyed this.

So many classics packed into one album. 4.6 stars

Still outstanding. Even the weird stuff. So fortunate to see Greg Hawkes play these on the original devices in 2023. So rad!

I didn't even think I liked The Cars (and I still might not), but this album was wall-to-wall bangers. It also may be the highest percentage of covered songs on one album. I grew up on the punk version of most of these songs, while rarely diving back into the originals. This might almost be five stars just based on that alone.

I came into this never even having heard of The Cars, let alone recognising any of their music. It's nice to come into something fresh. The magic of this album really lies in the synths. Quite possibly one of the few new wave albums I've listened to where I didn't get sick of the synths and in fact was anticipating every time they came back on. I've never experienced that in an album before. This album really has no skips. After a few listens, I wanted to give it a 4, but realised not a single time did I get sick of this, and I really enjoyed every song back to back. I think I listened to this like 3 times in a row without even realising because it felt fresh and new every single time. I think this album might be the perfect new wave album. Everything was done right and not to excess. The only downside to this album is I have to stare at some woman's fucked teeth. What a hideous album cover lmao. If that's the only downside to your album, then you've done pretty well in my books. Highlight tracks: My Best Friend's Girl, Just What I Needed (certified banger), You're All I've Got Tonight, Moving in Stereo. So pretty much half the album are bangers.

9 songs on the album and 6 were already on my favorites list before I even listened to this classic album. I had forgotten how lovely Moving In Stereo sounds in a good pair of headphones.

I ridiculous bounty of riches. Six absolutely bangers. It's like a Beatles album for a new generation - classic rock with keyboards and hooks galore. Songwriting and production are top notch. And it has Moving in Stereo...

Wow finally an album where almost every song is famous. And in my opinion they're good, too. Really good. They all come together to create the PERFECT '70s vibe. Not overdone or too groovy. Just truly stuff people would have listened to back then. And there's a full album of it. OK maybe the two deep cuts weren't that great. But I was more than willing to put up with them for the 7 good ones.

Love this. 60s harmonies, slightly Goth vibe, pure fun.

Imagine a world where all the 80s new wave albums in this list were as good as this one Standout: Just What I Needed

not 1st listen HL: “JUST WHAT I NEEDED”, “My Best Friend’s Girl”, “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight”, “Moving in Stereo”, “Bye Bye Love” and “Good Times Roll” September 12, 2024

Fricken awesome album.

So many hits, you would think this is a "best of compilation ".

i don't drive but one time i was hit by a car while riding my bike. overall this was a much more positive experience

Pleasantly surprised by this, and it's their debut! I needed something to groove away to after a long week while cleaning my house, and this fit the bill. Mostly sing-alongable, with some songs here or there I didn't know that were still good. 4.5/5

Classic band, Classic album. Stellar, concise. 6 of 9 songs added to the 1001 Experience Playlist

The Album Generator Gods have really been testing me. I needed this today.

To quote a good friend of mine, this is a killer album. So very, very good.

SOOO many BIG HITS!!!! 5 Stars without a doubt. Hard to believe this was their debut album.

This came out in 1978 and giving it the 5-stars it deserves is going to mess up my "Favorite Decade" stat even more by pushing the 1970s ahead in the rankings. This record was ahead of its time. Astute listeners across the decades will tell you that often the records near the end of a calendar decade go on to define the *coming* decade. This album has many of the hallmarks of a classic 80s sound. And, it delivers them all with such confidence and song craft that I can listen to it in 2024 and it still sounds solid. Nothing lasts forever, but The Cars legacy is going strong thanks to this record.

A perfect album. Right up there with Thriller. Every song is familiar, even the ones you've never heard before (and most of these songs have been all over radio) and you're singing along with every chorus. It reminds me of Nevermind in the sense that if you don't have the songs then there's no point but even still the production definitely matters and just as essential to the songwriting here the PRODUCTION really brings the genius out into the open so you can just lose yourself in the songs and enjoy how massive they sound.

A nearly flawless album.

three songs in and there is no doubt why Ric Ocasek was a legend in power pop from this point on.

An iconic album.

Pros: The Cars Greatest Hits Cons: The Cars Greatest Hits

FAVORITEEEEE!!!

I love this album. Memories of jr high when I started listening to music on my own instead of what my mom listened to. I didn't realize it was released in '78. I thought it was early 80s but that was probably due to Moving in Stereo in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Perfect? Is it PERFECT?

9.001/10.

This album starts off *strong.* Three hits, back to back. Then track 4... perhaps should have been left behind. Maybe a B-Side or something. But then it picks up again and there's more radio hits and some other great tunes. Outstanding pop songwriting and New Wave style. Would listen again.

Ого... Интересненько Альбом не оправдал ожиданий. Он получился гораздо лучше чем я думал. Даже самые проходные и заурядные песни не портят общие впечатления об альбоме

I don't know when I last listened to this album but I still know every note. Still sounds as great as it ever did. Love it!

This starts off with some hits! I like The Cars, they have a super classic vibe but with a sound that still feels unique to them. Moving in Stereo is my fave on here, but lots of great tunes. Super solid album from start to finish. Quite a debut!

Perfect, perfect, perfect album. I can't believe it's almost fifty years old.

My dudes!

It's an awesome album that brings back memories. I was in middle school when this came out. I love just about every song on here. It's not my favorite album by The Cars, I still prefer "Candy-O", but this one is definitely a favorite.

greatness

probably the most perfect debut album in american history

Had only listened to first 3 songs before. Loved the rest too upon listening. Just What I Needed is too damn good

Desert island pic!

The Cars' great debut album blended new wave & rock n' roll.

man i love this album front to back. not only is it, in my mind, basically a perfect debut album, it still holds up. i have to echo what my parents and people of my parents' generation said about this album, which is, "it's basically a cars greatest hits!" which... it is. the whole album is great and i have not gotten sick of it yet. it's got some of their iconic songs and the album cuts are pretty great too. great stuff!

great album

Amazing concise albums. Every song is a banger.

Really nice

Great album!!!!

Can't help but give a shout out to the Fast Times soundtrack. A timeless breakthrough album 4.5 up to 5 Still sounds great today.

Oh hell yeah! One of the greatest debut albums of all time of not the greatest, not a bad track not even a mediocre one. An album full of bangers although Just What I Needed stands above all of it. Get this, listen to it, enjoy it, feel happy after it I know I do

Listened to very often. Crazy that this came out in 1978...pre 1980s. Great album, excellent songwriting, talented musicians. All time classic. "With your eyes of porcelain and of blue They shock me into sense" "Hi Brad. You know how cute I always thought you were."

Hadn't listened to this in a long time. An 80's classic...will disregard the one forgettable song.

Arguably a flawless album, talk about a debut.

Just what i needed is one of the best songs ever made Album is a fun trip from beginning to end

Ah, The Cars! These guys are understatedly brilliant, although nobody seems to remember them. When I say "understatedly", I mean that you might well start this album off and then forget you've started playing it. After a few tracks you'll realise that this is pure, joyful pop music. Genuinely, I am pleased to have this album in my life.

7 great singles in under 36 minutes... What else do I need to say?

Just jam-packed with tunes that have stood the test of time.

Goddam this was really good. Listened twice and really enjoyed it. Kinda like Fleetwood Mac but more new wavey

One of my favorite albums, and one of the best debut albums of all time. Plays like a greatest hits. Always puts me in a good mood. Favorite songs: all of them except "I'm in Touch with Your World", which isn't that bad and is an okay mid-album filler song. Actual favorite song: "Moving in Stereo" for those bass lines.

Favourite tracks: what I needed; my best friend's girl; you're all I've got tonight; bye bye love ; moving in stereo

this album is great. one of those classic 70s albums that is practically a greatest hits album from the band (looking at you, Boston). there are a couple weird songs in the middle that are the only duds on the album - everything else is spectacular. good vibes, interesting lyrics, and the band sounds great. i've listened to this album probably 5-10 times before this (and played it in Rock Band) and while it took a bit to grow on me, i've come to really like it. it's one of my dad's faves as well :D favorites: everything except i'm in touch with your world and don't cha stop

Endless enjoyment on this iconic hit filled album. Just soooo good on all fronts!

Grew up listening to this one, brilliant.

One of my favorite albums. Basically all hits. I’m a bit cheesy but I really love The Cars and this is basically their greatest hits. Not to discount the rest of their catalog. This one is just top tier.

I already knew a lot of the songs, it was a good album

All time fav.

Another that I own on vinyl. The A side has all the hits, the B side has all the bangers!

Unique ground breaking band

Absolutely love this band and record. Such a unique sound for the time that really didn't fit into any particular scene which makes it so fantastic.

One of my all time favorites. Practically every track is a greatest hit. The Cars probably had more to do with my love of 80s synth than any other band.

What a great album. Amazing there is probably only 1, maybe 2 songs I don’t know. A+. Crisp harmony. Cool synthesizers. Solid guitar chords. You can put this on at an 80s party or an Alt rock party or banging rock party. Something in there for everyone. Zero weakness

Synthy poppy rocky perfection, no skips. I listened to this for the first time a couple years ago and had it on repeat for a while. I listened to it 3 times in a row this time. It sounds great and has a good flow - even I'm in Touch with Your World, kind of a weird (in a good way) song, doesn't sound out of place somehow. Moving in Stereo is one of my favorites but it's hard to choose just one. So happy I got to listen to this today.

One of my favorite records from that time and it was fun to listen to the whole thing instead of the occasional play on satellite radio.

This is such a a nostalgic album for me. My dad had it on CD so I'd listen to it in the car a ton as a kid. When my dad died we played Let the Good Times Roll along with his photo slideshow at the funeral. This is one of those albums that takes you somewhere. I feel like I'm a high schooler in the 70s listening to it. Just reminds you of a simpler, happier time.

I’m at a 4.5 that I’m pretty damn tempted to round up to a 5. I just had a lot of fun with this album; I thought the instrumentals here were super cool in an avantgarde sort of way for 1978; the synth work was fun, I thought the percussion had a really great tone to it, I thought the guitars were on fire for most of the album, and even when the horns come in, they sort of blend in naturally instead of taking a spotlight. Just on the instrumentals alone, I’d probably give this album a 3, I thought they were really fun. Lyrically, I think this is weird in a good way, because it directly makes the vocal delivery of them super fun – Ric Ocasek sounds like if someone had reigned in David Byrne just a little bit, and to my ears, it pays off super well. There are a few lulls here and there scattered on this album, but I really don’t know if any track was a miss for me; some of them felt a little too boxed in to more of a traditional sound, but they were still good listens, even if they didn’t captivate me as much. I just really liked this, you know? I’m gonna bump it up to a 5, I think it deserves it. Just a really cool album.

Incredible debut album start to finish. Best example of a band bridging the gap between classic power pop/rock with a new wave sound. Elliott Easton guitar solos are so melodic and fit the tunes perfectly.

Just what I needed My best friend’s girl You’re all i’ve got tonight 9.5/10

Yea this album sounds incredible, not much else to say beyond that!

Classic. Banger after banger after banger!

I’d heard My Best Friend’s Girl and Just What I Needed before. They’re both decent songs, but I wouldn’t say they’re favourites of mine, so I went in expecting this to be in the 3-4 range. I don’t know if it was because I was listening to this on a sunny day while driving along the coast and this just happened to be perfect for that, but this album was great. I’m not sure I’d give any of the songs 5 stars on their own, but the consistency in style and sound while maintaining enough variation to be interesting helped this album to build up to something that was greater than the sun of its parts. My favourite track was Moving In Stereo, but they’re all good and I will be listening to more Cars in future

bien entretenido sentí que iba en un roadtrip, el nombre a la banda le queda excelente. solid 9/10.

Love me some 70s rock

nostalgic

One of the best album oriented rock new wave debuts. Gorgeous synthesizer use.

It was really good and I recognized/knew all the songs.

One of my favorite albums in high school, no questions asked. The Cars made a perfect pop record and I just love Ric Ocasek's voice. Highlights: all, fantastic album.

Almost every song on this album hits like a single. That should tell you enough.

"The Cars" by The Cars is a quintessential album of the late 1970s, marked by its innovative blend of new wave, rock, and pop sensibilities. From the infectious hooks of "Just What I Needed" to the moody yet catchy "My Best Friend's Girl," this self-titled debut showcases the band's knack for crafting memorable melodies and marrying them with sleek, synth-driven arrangements. One of the album's strengths lies in its diversity. Tracks like "Good Times Roll" exude a playful energy, while "You're All I've Got Tonight" delves into darker, more introspective territory. Ric Ocasek's distinctive vocals and quirky lyrics add depth and character to each song, while the tight musicianship of the band members ensures a polished, cohesive sound throughout. "The Cars" is a timeless classic that remains as relevant and enjoyable today as it was upon its release. It's a testament to the band's enduring influence on the music landscape, and a must-listen for fans of alternative rock and pop alike.

Great Album!

"Good Times Roll". Classic song to start off the album. Follow that up with "My Best Friend's Girl". Another Banger.

The Cars came about at what seems the perfect time for them. They were able to masterfully mix Rock, Pop, and New Wave in such a way that created a catalog of almost nothing but gold. The songwriting from start to finish is in perfect balance. Catchy riffs and lyrics, but in such a way that you never tire of hearing them. An amazing debut album from a criminally underrated band. Every song on here is an instantly recognizable hit.

Fifth album I listened to on repeat.

This album by itself could be the soundtrack for any 80's themed movie or TV show. So many hits

When I was in high school, I was a hugeeee fan of the Beatles. Still am, but my music taste has expanded a little bit. One of my friends suggested listening to the Cars because it was "right up my alley". They were correct. Let the good times roll indeed.

D great way to start the day!!

Loved the sonic landscape they've created!

So many bands spend their careers in search of an album this tightly constructed and polished—and the Cars managed it on their first go-round. They’d still produce many great songs in the course of their existence, but arguably none of their other albums provide this kind of euphoric listening experience.

Super enjoyable album beginning to end. The vocals are almost queen-like on some tracks. First definite 5 star album I’ve stumbled across yet.

Bangers on bangers

relisten. great album 0 skips

Best album that has come up in a long time on this list. What a debut! The Cars inhabit that same intricate, quirky segment of rock and roll that The Talking Heads live in. And I'm here for that segment like no other! A performance-style lead vocalist and lyracist in Ocasek. A bouncy bass-driven sound thanks to Orr, and a clean and synth balanced sound that not only stands out uniquely but also produces some incredible, undeniable hit songs that don't pander to mainstream. They're just great songs. This thing is a debut and a greatest hits album at the same time. Supurb Friday album.

Strong outing by the Cars. Better than their overproduced 80's stuff

LOVE ME SOME CARS. Favorite Tracks: - Good Times Roll - Just What I Needed - Don't Cha Stop - You're All I've Got Tonight - Bye Bye Love - Moving in Stereo 5/5

All bangers, great flow. In 1978, when The Cars broke into the scene, the Loop, the top hard-rock AOR station in Chicago, promoted this band and album heavily. Guitars, yes, but synths?! It sounded so futuristic to me, and quite uncharacteristic for a station that held Zeppelin and the Stones up as gods. It's undeniably good New Wave music, bridging a lot of stuff on the scene in 1978--post-disco, post-punk, power pop, AOR and Top 40. There's something for any fan of rock music here. Excellent mix and production all around.

Very familiar already. Still awesome.

This is a greatest hits album that also so happens to be the first album by The Cars. That's probably a lie, because "Heartbeat City" is also a great record and I think Candy-O is really good too. I'm a fan of The Cars, obviously. I love the rock, synth new-wave sound they have and the layered vocals are really great too. There is not a bad song on this album and the first three songs are all classics. "You're All I've Got Tonight" should have been a big hit too. I could not recommend this album highly enough and the list is created so those who were not exposed to an album such as this would be.

I loved this. I've never consciously listened to The Cars before so I had no real basis, but expected a bit more mellow synthy stuff. Surprised by how heavy this is. I recognised the start of a bunch of the songs but they all developed in interesting ways and I could never predict where they were going.

9/10 This is my first 5 star album. It's so iconic I can't separate it from the miasma of music that is just in my head all the time. That it was this polished and hook filled in 1978 just puts it over the top. Moving in stereo, even without its association with Fast Times, has a tense sense of menace to it that gives me chills. Every other track is either good or flawless. The only reason it isn't a 10/10 is that I'm not compelled to own a physical copy, but it's close. 4-12-2024

Still great.

This album sounds so 80's (despite being released in '78), but also so fresh and good. The sound is just so cool and synth-vibey, I just love every songs. Even the songs I'd never heard before were great and had a great sound to them. Five stars.

Loved this, reminded me of happy childhood memories. Just cool music.

if i was around, this would have been my favorite band probably

Genuinely got excited when I saw this album come up yesterday, front to back banger after banger

Holy shit was not expecting such a banger album front to back. Might regret giving it a 5 later but in the moment I feel it’s deserved.

Fantastic new wave / post punk / art rock / whatever.

This album changed music for everyone in my inner circle back in the day and for me it's hard to think of one with more cultural significance. I think I am probably the only person I know that prefers Candy-O to this one but, that said, it's a short list of musical works that merit the ratings I'd give this album. Thanks for the jump start to this week.

Great album

This album’s musical ideas, style and execution for me demonstrate a fully realized perfection. I always want to listen to it all the way through it is such a joy to listen to and admire. And to think a few years later I saw them live in what was one of the worst concerts zi have ever witnessed. Every album is worth listening to until heartbeat City.

Had no idea I was this much of a Cars fan. Nor would I have guessed they released this in the 70s. Just some great rock with some punk attitude. 5/5

Some awesome 70s alt. Inspired me to start a 70s playlist.

How come I’ve neglected to listen to one of the greatest new wave album of all time for so long? Every single song is iconic and delivers on every possible scale. I’m going to buy this immediately.

This one was really unexpected. As the album opened, I thought the dated synth sounds wouldn't be my thing. But to be fair, there's a charm to it and the songs are really excellent. A really fun and enjoyable album with a mix of styles, will be sharing "Just What I Needed"with my friends as a highlight!

morning jam 444

Knew every word to every song

Fantastic album and an all-time strong debut album to boot. It's hard to believe this came out in '78.

Wow what's this? An actual all time great album? Shocked. Gobsmacked. Hoobastunk. 10/10.

Such a beautiful, unique, quirky sound. And it seems to have come out of the gate fully formed; perfected. These guys made several more great albums and about 8 years later they absolutely owned the summer of 1986. But for me this remains their best album. Two exceptional songwriters that seemed to get the best out of each other. The sequence of Best Friend's Girl ( Rick) and Just What I Needed (Ben) is the Cars in microcosm. Each belongs among the best tracks in pop/rock history. And Greg Hawkes doesn't get nearly enough attention. At this point, synthesizers weren't keyboards with scores of pre-programmed sounds. They were just wave form generators with scores of filters. To play one, you had to be both a piano player and an electrical engineer. You had to build each sound each time you played it. Greg did that masterfully, developing beautiful sounds that blended perfectly into the mix. But he also was always complimentary. The synths here don't ever get in the way, they round out that beautiful, quirky sound.

Outstanding!!!! Love it!!!!

Again, played this out in high school. Loved this so much.

Just classic after classic on this album. First time listening and probably knew half the songs. Some of the better pop-rock of that era, it's the kind of music that's catchy without you really noticing. It's Boston for people with a pop preference. 4.5/5, nothing groundbreaking but solid all the way through.

One of my first albums.

Awesome. Dynamic and great to listen to!

This album feels like you are listening to a greatest hits volume 1.

So I knew The Cars had a lot of hits but I didn’t realize so many of them were on ONE ALBUM. A MONSTER LP. A New Wave classic and one of the best ever of that genre.

Finally some good music

recently rediscovered the album on a reddit post of albums with no skips and i agree with the assessment. Catchy hooks and guitar riffs combined with new wave synths.

Man, I remember listening to this when it first released. It was so different from anything else I'd been listening to. Actual synthesizers in a pop band? It was one of the first New Wave/punkish bands to actually seem to write songs that you would hear on the radio. And radio itself played it, which set the stage for them to open up their formats a little.

The Cars are a fun band. I feel like most of their songs are fairly upbeat and positive, and quite a few have to do with cars or driving themes. Seemingly effortless and effective use of a blend of instruments, with the synthesizer taking it over the top. Very enjoyable without much to complain about For a debut album it really did everything well. Almost half of the songs were popular hits and it's tough to pick a favorite, but I'll go with the 1st track since it put me in the good mood for the rest of the album. Favorite track "Let the Good Times Roll" 5/5

It’s a debut album but it could be a greatest hits record. Amazing

Very nice

Um kinda mid 6/10

already listened

Fuck yeah, The Cars! What a debut album, just incredible. Listening to this one on repeat today. From the opening guitar riff of "Good Times Roll" to the fade out sax solo on "All Mixed Up" they've got me hooked. Individually, The Cars are such an absolute cluster fuck of styles that you'd be excused for thinking it would never work, but somehow the fusion of Elliott Easton's glammed out rockabilly guitar, Greg Hawkes' technology forward keys, David Robinson's (not that one) straight ahead rock drumming, Ben Orr's 70s mod style/singing , and Ric Ocasek's off-beat voice, sarcastic writing sensibility, and Muppet-like stage presence make for a truly sublime fusion. Several all timer tracks on this album, and even the lesser ones are very good. In the past I've not liked "I'm In Touch With Your World" or "All Mixed Up" very much, nor given them much of a chance. The former is very much a Zappa style piece, which I'm no great fan of, but listening all the way through there's something about it that manages to pull the screwball style together for me. The latter I probably mostly skipped in other listen throughs due to the slow start, but this is a fitting outro one would swear was produced by Jeff Lynne if they didn't know better. The Cars were influenced by and an influence on so many it's basically impossible to enumerate here, so suffice to say this album stands the test of time.

perfection

Well it was just what I needed! 5/5

Love it

Amazing. Wasn't too familiar with their music but I loved this album!! New fan!

Brilliant

Oh this slapped. Just a joyful experience.

One of my favorite albums of all time.

So many amazing songs on a debut album. Damn.

Well written, fun sounding songs with an excellent rhythm section and tasteful guitar playing. Synths sound a little dated, but there's not a bad song on this album. It's interesting to hear as kind of an in-between of punk, alternative and 70s style album oriented hard rock.

I've heard The Cars called synth-pop, but they lead with the guitars. It's certainly pop, but very high-quality pop, very-well produced with lots of catchy riffs and interesting beats. The vocals, drums, guitars and keyboards all hang together and this album is just straight entertaining. They have mastered their craft and I'm never unhappy when one of these songs comes up on the radio or a playlist.

Mom's favorite rock album as a child. I know every lyric. It's impossible to separate my familiarity with the albums underlying quality, I love every song. Five stars.

Great mix of rock and new wave. Strong guitar solos and harmonies. Full of bangers from start to finish.
