Reviews (page 5 of 14)

Good album, with some elements of electronic music, but still very guitar driven. Solid.

Would listen again. Good Time Roll, Bye Bye Love,

Vroom vroom.

Amazing three track run to open the album. “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight” is another favorite of mine on this album.

It needs some time for the engine to warm up, but when it does there’s some amazing tracks on here. True to their own sound.

Moving in Stereo is phenomenal. Already knew and enjoyed half of this album. Was great to listen to the whole thing!

I had a go at The Cars about 10 years ago as I kept reading they'd been a big influence on the likes of The Strokes and some of the early 00s indie but I didn't really see it, and saved a handful of tracks from across their albums. I seem to have pulled My Best Friend's Girl and Just What I Needed from this, their debut album, and then moved onto the likes of 'Magic' and 'It's All I Can Do'. I've now had this on rotation for a full week and I was clearly in too much of a rush previously because there's really no filler here at all. It's indie enough to be extremely cool but also poppy enough to be damn catchy and replayable. I no longer care if it influenced The Strokes or not, I'm having this one for myself.

Cars understood something a lot of rock bands never do: cool is useless unless the songs land. These songs land. The band fused new wave, power pop, and electronic rock into something sleek enough for the future and catchy enough for radio.

A solid album and a bit of a gem, IMO. This is produced really well, I think. The sound was very crisp throughout the album. I enjoyed the upbeat nature of this album, the fun elements (like all the synths/funky sounds) and the way the vocalist's voice felt perfectly suited to the music. This is teetering between a 3 and a 4 for me.... I might have to give it a 4. Nearly every song was enjoyable to me. I didn't care much for Dont Cha Stop and You're All I'e Got Tonight. Favorite Tracks: Good Times Roll Bye Bye Love All Mixed Up Just What I Needed Best Friend's Girl

I Needed Someone To Feed 1001 Albums Generator 278 (4/24/2026) The Cars' debut album is the most 80's sounding album not from the 80's that I've ever heard. The mix of glammy rock, new wave, and power pop on display here is fantastic, and the only real misses are due to The Cars starting to get a little weirder than they should, most notably on I'm In Touch With Your World. The album definitely blows its load early with three massive hits in a row, but there are some really solid deep cuts here, like Don't Cha Stop and You're All I've Got Tonight. Great, classic pop rock that was certainly ahead of its time. 4.5/5, rounded down to a 4. Favs: Good Times Roll My Best Friend's Girl Just What I Needed Least Fav: I'm In Touch With Your World

Kickass power pop and new wave songs. It is a song away from being a perfect record IMO.

I enjoyed that. Far more than I thought I would.

molto bello e chill

Oh what a nice little throw back to one of my dad’s favourite albums 💖haven’t listened to this in a while. Makes me miss him a lot. Love you daddy - great taste as always.

Ya tons of classics and sold vibe. Didn't really grab me, very much enjoyed. 3.8

its cute, i'm just so tired today i can't feel the vibe at all

only listened to the first half but pretty good

Очень хороший альбом. Впервые послушал эту группу и она мне понравилась

TOP!!!!!!

many that are good. good :guitar:

Didn't know this, but a strong album.

8.5/10

I revisited this after writing it off as too pop-ish a few years ago. I love it now.

I’ve heard some of the tracks in the radio before, but never knew the band. I like this. In this bands influence on future generations ,e.g. Weezer (Just what I needed) is clear.

Sunglasses on, janked up on caffeine, dressed to kill. A little bit Talking Heads' artsy nervousness, a little bit Blondie's pop smarts, a little bit Split Enz's melodic mastery. Of it's time but always fresh. A perfect little confection, lime fizz with a double shot of grenadine.

Un 7.5/10

Good music to listen to in a car.

You could have told me this was a ‘best of’ album; I can’t name a Cars song that isn’t on this record. As I listened to this I had a few “oh wow, that’s a Cars song?” moments as well. This one feels kinda like that Bad Company record that had all their hits on it. What a record!

Muuy bueno. Me gustó

Loved this album. The singles are brilliant. We got to know they weren’t really a new wave band but older guys jumping on the bandwagon. However, it’s still a great album.

I already listen to this album a lot during the summer because it puts me in such a good mood when I listen to it in the car

Me da fleetwood mac vibes and i am here for it, me gustó bastante y lo volvería a escuchar

This record came out when I was working in a record store, so I can assure you that I have heard it. Hey, I even had the 7-inch of "Just What I Needed" on red vinyl, though I think I got it for free as some kind of record store promo thing. This is a crossing point between power pop and early New Wave. The backing music sometimes sounds like a throwback to songs from the early 60s with the twangy guitar and simple choruses, and then on other tracks you get more electronic stuff, like what would be prominent in the early 80s. The standout track for me on here is "I'm in Touch With Your World" (the b-side of "Just What I Needed"), which is a little weirder and more restrained than the rest of it. This wasn't my favorite record at the time, but it's fun to listen to now. 4 stars

A bit front loaded, but a brilliant and influential album

Overall Rating - 3.67/5 (7.33/10). Didn't realize so many classics of early new-wave were all on this album. Good album.

Some nice hooks and melodies, but to predictable for my taste. I'm In Touch With Your World is best song here

This is the best album they made in my opinion, none of my favorite songs are here but thisbwas fresh and new and impactful. I feel thisbis their masterpiece. 2 songs sounds too similar which is why I disnt give it 5 stars

Heard of band, never listened to the album. Starts off with a banger. Really good guitar and vocals. Keys as well work really well. My best friends girl is another classic. Didn’t know the cars had it like that. Great way to start an album. Love the guitar solo. 3/3 with just what I needed. This is the best one so far. Another all time classic. That keyboard riff is awesome. Very futuristic. I’m in touch with your workd has a lot going on. Again, futuristic production. Not as good as the first 3 but it’s another well made song. Don’t cha stop is much more 70s. Great guitar solo. Just not as futuristic as a sound. Still a good song. Are you kidding me another all time classic with you’re all I got tonight. I know all these songs, never realized they came from the same album. Again, great vocals, keys and guitar. Bye bye love is way too similar to you’re all I’ve got. It’s still a good song, just thought I was still listening to the same song. Love the fade into moving in stereo. Can’t believe how good the production is on this one. Again, ahead of its time. And it’s a great closer in all mixed up. This album was 9 good songs in a row with 4/5 all timers mixed in. Jus good music for 35 mins straight. 4.3/5 stars.

This one took a while for me to get into, but when I did I found myself really engaged. Couple of standout hits for me, not only the classic Moving in Stereo, but also the final track.

Backhalf turns what otherwise is a solid 5 into a 4. One of the best series of album openers I know of.

Some classics and some good songs I've never heard before

I never realized this album was the late 70's. I always associated it with the early to mid 80's. Really good album. Lots of good songs and even the average ones weren't bad.

This takes me back to my childhood, one of my dad’s favourite albums.

A solid and concise album that whizzes past with fun and vibrant energy. The production on this is impeccable, I love all the synths. The album is chock full of catchy melodies and groovy hooks. My main gripe with the album would be that it sometimes strays too far into cheesiness, there’s even a slide whistle at one point. Sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn’t. It is obviously intentional cheesiness though so I suppose you can’t knock them too much for it. The album is very consistent but “Just What I Needed”, “Bye Bye Love” (great synths), and the fantastic closer “All Mixed Up” were my favourites.

Always loved this album. Like a greatest hits album unto itself, one of the all-timer debuts.

Buen álbum, buenas voces tenían

These are radio hits for a reason. They're simple and catchy, and don't overstay their welcome

bye bye love borrows from blue öyster cult (don't fear) the reaper moving in stereo--love the stereo effects here lots of classics here. are they doing anything revolutionary? probably not, i dunno. does that matter? no cause it's enjoyable 4/5, it's a bop

Mid 4 Great start on this. Solid opener, power pop anthem, classic single. Quality drops after that but theres some high points

Starts with 3 late seventies classics and the rest is pretty good too. Moving In Stereo is a really good track. ? Inspiration for Supergrass.

lovely

4.5 - fantastic album

Recognized some one hit wonders. Also interesting to hear what sounds like inspiration for other bands.

Feels like a best of. Just so well put together. I can see why weezer got Ocasek to produce their first album.

Great album, catchy songs, good guitar playing. Zoned out partly on moving in stereo

7/10 The bridge from 70s music to 80s music. A very fun album with some awesome anthemic pop-rock bangers. However, it does get a little repetitive at times. Favorite tracks: My Best Friend's Girl, Just What I Needed, Don't Cha Stop Least Favorite Track: I'm In Touch With Your World

This used to be one of my favorites when it first came out. I still like it but dont listen to this kind of music much anymore. Still good though

The whole album is catchy, tight and tough from start to finish, it's an excellent and highly enjoyable pop record. The grinning manic face on the cover is a plus.

Tailed off a bit in the middle but overall very good with some definite bangers!

Rated this album, it sounded great with some really hooky memorable songs. Just good vibes front to back.

So good. It's gotten better with age and just the list of people and bands that they influenced from Queensryche to INXS, and more. Effectively and beautifully combining keyboards and guitar to create a real rock sound that isn't overly heavy or experimental. 4+

Me encanto mal. Todos los temas. Ningun skip. Muy buen sonido

Album 16 3/28/26 Took a week off from the project after this was generated, listened to this about a week after on a Saturday afternoon. Dates won't line up on my for a while. A very sweet record that is one I listened to a lot when I was first getting into various types of new wave as a teen. The first three tracks of the album are 5 star worthy. The synthesizers and processed drum sound blend together well throughout, the album intro to Good Times Roll being a prime example. They all tread similar pop-rock ground, but Elliot Easton's guitar licks on My Best Friend's Girl is the best part. The one track I do not care for at all, derailing side A, is I'm in Touch With Your World. Ocasek's delivery and the guitar riffs sound like a bad DEVO impression. I'm mild on tracks 5-9 besides Bye Bye Love, my old personal favorite. The call and response between keys and guitar solos is so sweet on the ears. This album has a good many 5 star tracks, all I which I've written about, some 4s (Good Times Roll, You're All I've Got Tonight), but the rest are either 3s or are I'm in Touch With Your World. Sits near the middle of the 4 Star record wall adjacent to This Year's Model, but below Moving Pictures and Tapestry

Great debut album by the Cars. Highlights: My Best Friend’s Girl, Good Times Roll, Just What I Needed, Bye Bye Love, Moving In Stereo and You’re All I’ve Got Tonight. 4.7

Straightforward singles but interesting early New Wave tracks. Their use of contemporary technologies makes their sound stand out from their peers on a great debut.

olm begendım ha sarıyo uc bucuk

It was good, but front stacked with all the hits

Muy bien!

Joins the list of incredibly good debut albums. Good sound, interesting vibe throughout. For a pop album it's pretty great through and through. Good Times Roll is great. Moving in Stereo is great. The songs all sound distinct but meld together into a great album.

Solid dad/yacht rock. I wouldn’t reach for it, but it’s a great summer vibe, and one of those albums that I unintentionally know all the lyrics to.

This is so 80s

So fun and weird

When I heard the first two super popular tracks I was thinking oh they are just going to be this pop band. I really liked it. Idk why Just What I Needed hit so hard yesterday but I listed to that and then Tinas version as well a lot yesterday.

Perfect if one's into the more pop side of new wave. Enjoyed it quite a bit.

Much better than I was expecting. Songs still sounding fresh after nearly 50 years! Just what I needed still the standout for me.

Great rock album - really enjoyed it!

This is a great album. Or at least it starts great :D

I LOVED Rick Ocasek. I thought his song writing and approach to vocals was fresh. This was a fun record.

Adorei os efeitos sonoros

The sheer volume of FM rock radio staples alone should be enough to let you know how deep this record goes. You've heard all or parts of at least seven of these nine tracks somewhere, like a sporting event or film/tv (complimentary). A record almost as old as I am yet still has a timeless feel to it. Not too stuck in the 70s and not too new wave to be assigned to the 80s.

Popular songs like let the good times roll and just what I needed!

Great album. Feels really fresh, and no bad songs

The Cars is surprisingly catchy and easy to enjoy. The songs are tight, melodic, and full of clear hooks, which makes the album feel familiar even on a first listen. “My Best Friend’s Girl” and “Just What I Needed” especially stood out. Both immediately reminded me of Weezer, particularly the sound of Weezer (The Blue Album). Later I noticed that Ric Ocasek produced that album, which suddenly made the resemblance make perfect sense.

Good Times Roll - 3.5/5 My Best Friend's Girl - 4.5/5 Just What I Needed - 4/5 I'm in Touch with Your World - 3/5 Don't Cha Stop - 3.5/5 You're All I've Got Tonight - 3.5/5 Bye Bye Love - 4/5 Moving in Stereo - 3/5 All Mixed Up - 3/5

What a wonderful and fun album to listen to. 9/10

The second half is much better than the first. It is on a line between classic rock and what would soon be known as new wave.

good stuff

🧿: Los miembros bromeaban con nombrar este disco (su disco debut) como "The Cars' Greatest Hits", y el tiempo, de alguna forma, les dio la razón. El sonido se siente clásico, divertido. Digno representante del new wave. 🎶 🥇: All Mixed Up ⭐: 8/10

honestly not bad

Hit after hit to start the album. A lot to love here, great classic rock. Let down by one or two duds (looking at you, "I'm in touch with your world" and your goofy circus music)

Fun, infectious album. The lyrics can interesting & quirky when they ain't being horn dogs. His voice is fine but it can be grating over a long period. They like to do fun things with the synth. Normally, I don't like that sound but they use it in a way that works quite well at times. The cheesy of the synth does rear its head but not enough. The harmonies are good too. 4

Already knew this was a great album, had 6/9 tracks saved. The other tracks were probably filler for a reason, but overall pretty solid. Parts of it scream 80s, and others are timeless. Always worth the relisten

Álbum divertido e com um espírito desafiador. Pula Unicrom.

Very nice album. A great prelude to the 80’s ahead. Just What I Needed a great track! 8/10

4/5 liked it sm

4/5 A great album that lead to an incredible catalog of songs in the following decade. Favorite tack: Just What I Needed

Great song after great song, so well produced too.

Excellent album

Let the good times roll... a classic.

Decent would listen again

Similar to what I wrote about Van Halen's, the Cars' debut album contains a number of the group's career hits. Granted, not sure what that says about the body of their work as a whole if most of their hits came from their very first album, but I still consider the Cars a respectable group in the classic rock sphere that did have several hits later on. But back to rating this album, it's a very strong debut. As a casual Cars fan, it has everything I like about them: catchy hooks, that distinct guitar tone, Ric Ocasek's voice that makes those melodies and hooks pop even more. And lastly, Moving in Stereo is just flat out awesome. Top tracks: Good Times Roll, My Best Friend's Girl, Just What I Needed, Moving in Stereo

I dig the Cars and always thought Ric Ocasek did a lot of good for the music world. Of all of the FM radio classic rock titans, I think the Cars are a bit underappreciated. As far as debut albums go, you can't really ask for much more than this. Couple of big hits and generally, the music has stood the test of time.

No. 361/1001 Good Times Roll 3/5 My Best Friend's Girl 4/5 Just What I Needed 5/5 I'm in Touch with Your World 3/5 Don't Cha Stop 3/5 Your're All I've Got Tonight 4/5 Bye Bye Love 4/5 Moving in Stereo 4/5 All Mixed Up 5/5 Average: 3,89 Wow, the first New Wave album I liked. I especially liked the guitar here. Nice songs all around.

Nice powerpop album. Not overly keen on most of the songs, but Just What I Needed and You’re All I Got Tonight are great tracks. Thankfully, it’s short, as an album of this genre should be, so I get tempted to revisit immediately

An absolutely excellent pop album. The hits are still great, and the non-singles are still a lot of fun. 4.5 stars!

A quirky album with most of the songs in heavy rotation on FM radio in the late 70's. Easy to get into and offers somewhat better listening than some of the other offers at that time.

Enjoyable throughout, though the slower song or two stuck out and weren’t as good. Liked almost every song.

The album starts out super strong! I was surprised by all the songs I knew.

Very good album

Despite being a fan of the period and the genre, I did not know them at all. Slick new wave sound, I like it.

Good album, couple of hits and some solid pop/rocky songs

While not as fast as The Planes, or even The Trains, The Cars are the most convenient way to get around. This album makes a good roadtrip soundtrack on The Highway.

Solid B+; holds up pretty well; sounded very MODERN (and fresh), when it came out; 1st 3 songs very strong; song 1 (Good Times Roll) was the "class song" for my graduating class, in my senior year (1979-80); song 3 was a song that I remember my college friends and I talked about performing together (we never did, but I still think of that when I hear it, and take a stab at singing it); #4 less substantial (but ok, for an album); by around songs 5 & 6, I'm starting to wonder: do the songs start to sound kind of the same, after a while? I guess you could say that The Cars had a sound, *their* sound, and it was a pretty darn good sound, very much OF their time, but also at the cutting edge of their time; #7 is good; #8 is the "deep cut" that wasn't a hit, but I remember that some of my friends liked it a lot (I like it, too) - kinda trippy, and catchy, too; #9 is similar to #8, in being maybe a little deeper (less obviously a catchy pop hit song); together, 8 and 9 help to make the album a stronger ALBUM, and not just a string of catchy (but maybe a little lightweight) pop songs.

There is a vibe

I LOVE NEW WAVEEEEE!!!!!

First three tracks: 10/10, no notes. I had high hopes for the rest of the album, but it went way downhill.

I saw a review on this site that says this album “starts slow.” I try not to judge too harshly, musical taste is subjective, etc., but come on. Three straight pop classics to kick this off. Unless that person literally means “the first 29 seconds of good times roll are a slow, gripping build into a perfect pop song,” I don’t believe they actually think this starts slow. At one point in my life I made a list of tiny details in songs I really loved, and the part in “just what I needed” where the snare is on 1 and 3 was perhaps the inspiration for that list. And I always forget that I like “you’re all I’ve got tonight”, “moving in stereo”, and the chorus of “all mixed up” too. So, roughly, it’s three songs I love, three songs I like to varying degrees, and three songs I think are meh. That’s probably a four.

Great album. A few uninteresting songs in the back half keep it from being a five.

Impossibly catchy songs

Poxa, gostei muito! New wave gostosinho e fácil de ouvir. Esse vai pra playlist.

I enjoyed this more than I expected, especially the second half. The synths are so 80s, but so good and give the album a sense of magic. I'm hearing some cool guitar riffs that feel so common in the later skater boy punk rock 20-30 years later, like Sum41/Blink-182, especially in tracks "Just What I Needed" and "Bye Bye Love". Hands down the best track for me is "Moving in Stereo" - it's like punk psychedelic meets cheesy B-grade scifi films from the 60s/70s. This is a 3.5 for me, but rounding up. It's so 80s, but I'm hearing the sensibilities of pop punk that I adored in the early 200s.

I think that the biggest issue I have with this album is that at every opening I think the song is going to be Jesse's Girl, despite that song not being by The Cars. That is to say, the sound is fun, but a bit of the same after a while. Loved the guy who plays the guitar, and there's something to be sure about not having to strain to hear that the melody is supposed to be. Not always guaranteed in rock music

Incredible pop album with infectious hooks

First three songs were fire

It sounds like a best of, but it is in fact a debut album. The quality of this new wave power pop is top drawer. It's got hooks to hang your hat on but there is still enough little weird bits to keep it a tad strange (as all good pop music should be) so you come back for the tunes whether you want to sing along or just puzzle at what they were drinking. The main argument I can come up with against it is that it seems like a collection of songs rather than an album, but I guess in this day and age, streaming kind of killed that idea of album unification. Ho hum, it's still fucking great. Best Tracks: My Best Friend's Girl; Just What I Needed; Moving In Stereo

#21/1001 🇺🇸🚘 Woweee. I didn't know anything about The Cars before i heard this but its blown me away. When i started out on this, I promised myself there would only be a handful of 5 star albums and i definitely wouldnt just dish them out to anything i didn't already love but this is damn near close.

The beginning of this album is amazing. A few weirder songs on here than I was expecting. But over all great classic 80s album.

It was an interesting blend of familiar sound, in a package I've never heard before.

Peak nostalgia

Solid rock album, I really enjoyed it. “All Mixed Up” is the only song I didn’t enjoy. 4/5

1001’s been on a hot streak lately Really liked this album, Just What I Needed is an all time fav of mine and for the most part liked everything else I heard. There’s a couple songs that weren’t it but I can look past that. 35 mins is also a crazy short runtime. Definitely a little unpolished at times (which makes sense for how early in their career it was) but just a solid album all around

If you gave me 20 guesses, I STILL would have never guessed that The Cars were from Boston. Always figured a California vibe, but that's probably just based on the New Wave sound. This album is from the Golden Age of leather jackets and skinny ties, and I'm here for it. After listening, I'm amazed how NOT dated this album is. It could go toe-to-toe with anything coming out today Great opening track, love that. Good Times Roll is a great opener, especially on a debut album. Followed by My Best Friends Girl and Just What I Needed, could be one of the great 3-song openers on any debut album. Couple slow ones and off-brand ones probably keep me from giving a 5 star rating, but You're All I've Got Tonight and Bye Bye Love are classics. So I'm in the 4 to 4 1/2 range. A really good listen, great debut album.

This album is fun and nice to listen to, but nothing really struck out on it. The album just sounded like background noise and I couldn’t focus on it despite doing nothing at the time. I liked it, I just didn’t vibe with it entirely.

I knew a few songs, didn’t know they were from them, really great

Гарний альбом під роботу і вчорашній настрій. Але загалом не супер мій стиль.

I found this album really interesting. I loved the retro and electronic synth rock of this album. Probably a 3 but I really like how it sounds.

Another one of the best debuts ever....as far as I know, kind has all the Cars songs you need. "Just What I Needed", "My Best Friend's Girl", "Let the Good Times Roll"....another band making good , straight ahead 3 minute rock songs with good hooks, and Elliot Easton is a really interesting, tasteful guitarist. What happened to competent rock bands?

listened to greatest hits and recognized many songs, enjoyed it with my dad

Enjoyed this, it was fun!

I don’t know why I always thought this album was from the early 90s. The cover really looks like it could belong to a grunge or punk record. Musically, though, it’s very much rooted in the 70s. It often reminds me of artists like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and even the Dutch group Doe Maar, especially on songs like “My Best Friend’s Girl.” There are some genuinely great tracks here. “Just What I Needed” isn’t a complex song at all, but it’s incredibly catchy and has a great groove. I might be mixing things up, but I clearly hear Brian Eno and David Bowie influences on tracks like “I’m in Touch with Your World.” That said, there are a few things I don’t love about the mixing and instrument choices. The worst example is “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight,” which leans way too hard on the same synth chord repeating through almost the entire song. Really cool album, I will listen to it again. 8/10.

This album was a lot of fun, and I recognized a lot more songs off the album than I expected. I won’t say the album was amazing, but definitely a great listen. 4.25 / 5

Iconic record, songs were great and memorable. It's a staple on rock and it's unique sound. Will keep it in rotation.

Great new wave album one of the best in the genre

Ric Ocasek is a piece of shit but I have always loved this album

Great album.

The album is filled with classics. It was just what I needed.

Fine power pop

Let the good times roll!!! This is a version of Queen I can get on board with. With same producer as some of Queen's records, it's not surprising that they sound a little bit like Queen in some places However despite this fact, I immensely enjoyed this record. It was happy, experimental, fun and above all funny (it's my best friend's girl, she used to be mine). Sad, funny, ironic and catchy as hell. With a great 34 minutes in length, I found myself playing this over and over again. I'd love to get this on vinyl if I come across it. 4.5 stars from me.

I really like this one. I can decently hear how this one is transitioning into that 80s genre of music you think of when you think of 80s, so I can see how this inspired many others. I like how fun and colorful it is!

oh i love it tbh its very very good and one thing about this playlist is that its not gonna be pleasing to the average listener its really not anything special tbh its just very raw and that makes it unique

Lots of classics on here, but nothing that felt like a hidden gem

7/10 – good

Really liked this album, it reminds me of high school. I can really hear the transition between the decades in this album. Its a fun relaxing album, reminds of warm weather.

Short, upbeat, and catchy. I have heard Just What I Needed before and wasn’t super pumped when this album popped up, but ended up being pleasantly surprised.

Wasn't really expecting much from this but found this really grew on me as I listened. A little on the poppier side of the kind of stuff I usually listen to, but some really great songs (especially towards the end of this)

Gostei mtoook e a capa linda linda linda

It has all of the hits! What else do you want?

I haven’t listened to the Cars in awhile. It was a fun revisit.

Pretty good! Very creative.

It's so close to being a 5 but it's just not quite there. It's very good though

Would listen again. Fun hits and other songs were good too.

Es como si Tom Verlaine estuviese en The Talking Heads.

Great but not my taste

This one I was somewhat familiar with before receiving, classic rock, good guitars, can’t determine a fav song, I really like most of them

Ric and Ben 5/5 -1 for the guitar player

#1-1089 , The Cars - The Cars , Debut Album by the band was nothing but a fascinating ride , Ric Ocasek's Or The Band's " brain " songwriting skills are very catchy and fresh despite the album being 48 years old . Benjamin Orr's smooth vocals are highlights of this album . The Cars were one of the firsts to adopt new technology ( also helps its never-aging feel of songs ) and they were great at it , nailing synth-sounds and cool-ish drum sounds . " Moving In Stereo " was a great radio-hit of great instrument use and also thanks to phoebe cates and fast times at ridgemont high . A Perfect-o! song was " Bye Bye Love " 'cause guitar tunes were groovy and fun , with sonic transitions peaked my interest towards this album . The Saxophone Solo In " All Mixed Up " was indeed a cherry on top moment . This album should've been named as " the cars greatest hits " because almost every song is worth listening more than multi-times. 8.75 / 10

It was not a bad listening, I liked it overall.

Good soup. "I'm in Touch with Your World" och "Don't Cha Stop" inte skitbra, 2/5. Resten är stabila 4/5 förutom "Just What I Needed" som är en 5/5 i mitt tycke!

so ein harter slay!!

I can get down with some Cars. Just looking at the tracklist, this album is stacked -- Good Times Roll, My Best Friend's Girl, Just What I Needed, Bye Bye Love, You're All I've Got Tonight, and Moving in Stereo all get regular air time to this day on classic rock stations and commercials alike. Really only 3 songs on here I hadn't heard before and they're fine enough. Don't Cha Stop feels a bit like Devo, and I'm in Touch with Your World verges on psychedelic in tone -- more Talking Heads adjacent. Quite an impressive debut. Solid 4

An all around terrific album. Another work that stands the test of time.

starting with three bangers is iconic enough it doesn’t matter that they proceed in the exact same fashion

yeah it was ok

Genuinely a fun and interesting little album.

J'aime bien My best friend's girl, don't cha stop et you're all I got tonight 😋

Favourite Songs: Don't Cha Stop Moving In Stereo

Not a lot to say here, just a very good album.

Classic as hell. An instant classic anytime, but especially while driving or hanging with a girl. The cover is a classic too. I don’t know what it is about the Cars but they just hit the right grooves for me.

-If you put on a skinny tie, pink blazer, and wayfarer sunglasses, this album autoplays. -These guys spent the late 70s inventing the sound of 80s pop rock. -Rock music has always been a useful tool for rizzed up nerds to get laid (see: Billy Joel, Steely Dan, Weezer, etc). The Cars are some all time great rock nerds. -Absolutely great power pop. An album I've been listening to for 20+ (!) years. Also, quite a bit weirder than I remember. Lots of quirked up herky jerky rhythms and moody Bowie-esque timbres underneath the palm muted power chords and rockabilly guitar solos. -Two years after this album came out, Ric Ocasek would go on the produce the second Suicide album.

346/1089 - It's some alright New Wave. Slightly better than Blondie. I think the Brits win this genre overall. Re-listened and some parts reminded me of Supertramp and XTC with the way the synths and guitars are used. It's growing on me!

Tight album - a lot going on but really tight with the arrangements. Just What I Needed a particular highlight but a really strong album.

really good

Don't Cha stop, my favorite song. Good album, feel happy while listening, didn't pay attention to the lyrics tho

Might have been released in 1978, but this album was part of my soundtrack of 1993. Still love listening to "Moving in Stereo" in my car or headphones and marveling at the panning. Very few songs I was not familiar with (I'm in Touch with Your World, Don't Cha Stop, All Mixed Up) All Mixed Up

This may be the most '80s sounding thing there is, which is remarkable given that it came out in '78. "Moving in Stereo", along with "How Soon Is Now?", probably the most 80s sounding song there is, and I say that not just because of Fast Times. There are few bands that have a sound as clear and distinct as The Cars. The Wikipedia page categorizes them as, among other things, power-pop, which is about as close as you can get to putting them in a box. It gets the vocals right, some of the song structure, but even then it ain't quite right. They're The Cars! They make Cars music! The hits rule, just perfectly constructed pop-rock songs. The album sounds great. A couple deep tracks sag ("All Mixed Up" "I'm in Touch With Your World") and get a little too caught up in the synths and whatever. The album-closing sax solo is totally out of place, but very much of its time. These quibbles are more than made up for by what a jam "Bye Bye Love" is, not to mention, well, pretty much every other song on the album.

Not bad. Better than most of the others from the 70s, actually.

Fun album from my youth, I had a few cars 7” records back in the day. 3.5 stars

Amazing synth work.

Like a more mainstream talking heads. I enjoyed this one

Probably the most interesting album I've listened to yet. It's a bit all over the place, with some bits sounding like The Who from the early 70s and other bits sounding like they'd fit in with 90s music (album came out in 78). Overall quite fun

nice, really good vibes, perfect rocky ish vibes but nothing insanely good all sounded the same

Those first three songs rival the best opening of any album of that era/genre, just banger after banger. The rest of the album is perfectly good, but it just doesn’t compare to that opening run. Best Track: My Best Friend’s Girl

4 better than I thought. Overall really good with only one Yugo!

bangers. just what i needed. also incredible non new wave influences on the latter half of the album, especially "moving in stereo"

I loved this one. I knew a few of the tracks already, but the other ones were just as good. A very fun synth-pop/rock time!

First half is a 5. Second half is a 3. Overall, it is a 4.

* I really love the bass use in the songs. * Lots of synth * Worth listening again 4/5

Some classic 70s rock, and a damn fun album overall. Just What I Needed is gonna be played in commercials until the end of time, and it still is great. Sadly not every song is on that level, but it's a lot of fun to listen to nonetheless.

Great hits and the rest was really good too.

zajebisty

very cool and funky

this album was very haunting and felt like the soundtrack of some 80s tv show or something. overall really enjoyed it

Wow what a packed album! Every song is a bonafide banger. The Cars kick ass!

Good 80s vibes

cohesive

Good Times Roll, I'm in touch with your world, Moving in Stereo, Just What I Needed

C'est l'fun. 3.75 étoiles

Banger after banger after banger. I'm In Touch With Your World is the weakest track by far, but it's leagues ahead of a lot of the other garbage on this list. There's definitely a formula they're using to write and produce these songs, but it works well.

Heard before: No Fav Tracks: Good Times, Beset Friends Girl, Just What I Needed Would I Listen Again? Likely The album opens really strong with three huge hits back to back. Familiarity with them defintely help me enjoy them more. The other tracks were good and its a solid album. Something I would put on again but not frequently. Rating: Weak 4

I enjoyed the upbeat tempos and bright sounds this album provided. It was an appropriate length where I didn’t get bored or tired of their tunes.

Proto Weezer

The name of the game is restraint. By using synths only where they benefit the song, The Cars made a much better album than their (many) imitators.

As someone not that familiar with The Cars, I could have confused this debut album for a greatest hits album.

Excellent power pop. Quite raw but with very catchy melodies. Like this a lot. A good few songs on here which I’ve never heard before. Of these, “Bye bye love” and “All Mixed Up” standout. Solid 4

Better than Coldplay

Not bad to be honest

Sounds like decent New Wave, no song really drew the attention but more listening may solve that. Benefit of the doubt

Solid, wide-ranging, eccentric, power pop! Love it. That this was the debut is even more impressive.

Classic album and honestly probably the first one I’ve had in a few weeks that I would agree is a must listen. This I album is a great intro into Krautrock, which is such a vital genre for almost anything that came after it besides maybe country and top 40 (I am including hip-hop and disco as being influenced by Krautrock). I so felt hope that this stands as a jumping off point for a few people into other artists from this genre such as NEU!, Ashra Tempel, Faust, Cluster/Kluster, etc.

The production on this rates much higher than most stuff from the era. I had heard these songs many times, but it was remarkable how much more was revealed the first time I listened on a high quality sound system. It's oozing with ear candy for audiophiles, and the lyrics are pretty solid as well.

Really great album from the Cars here. Shows their sound very well and a great 70s staple rock album. Fav Song:Best Friends Girl

I mean it was just banger after banger after banger

Unbekannt, noch so spannend.

im already hyped this album cover is sooooo cool and the guitar isolation get HYPED AJHHHH JUST WHAT I NEEDED I LOVE THIS FUCKING ALBUM this song might be one of the best of all time it just hits also 'youre all I've got tonight' I love the drums at the start and the chorus also just that song in general if I had to give critique id say some of the songs sound vaguely similar good album closer-- all mixed up is a great song 4/5 just because it feels right.

Lots of fun tracks on here!

Overall a pretty good album. Lots of his, a couple misses.

This is one of those albums that plays like a greatest hits. “Good Times Roll,” “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “Just What I Needed,” and “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight” are all on the same album?! Wow. The Cars have a great style. It’s new wave inspired by classic rock n roll. Some of the most enjoyable, crowd-pleasing rock music I can think of. The album cuts are good here too. The album flows nicely between the lesser known tracks and the mega hits. Maybe a slight dip at the end, but the opening sequence is fantastic! Great classic album cover too. 4.5

I love this band but admittedly I haven't listen to them enough and I'm so happy to see them on this list. When they slam the big "Let the good times roll" at 0:46 of the first track, you kind of get an idea for what this band is capable of. Technical and precise and catchy and super refined. "Just What I Needed" is such an amazing song. I've always liked it but I really fell in love with it after hearing Punch Brothers cover it on the "AV Club" youtube channel. If you haven't heard that I really can't recommend it enough. To me this record is a strong 4, but not quite a 5. "My Best Friends Girl" and "Just What I Needed" are both super impressive songs that most fans of music know or have atleast heard of, but after these first tracks the album does fall off a little bit. I love this album cover. I've written a bunch before about how album covers sometimes get this "moment in time" feeling for me that's hard to explain.. like a familiarity for something that never occurred? A nostalgia for an experience that you were never a part of? This is what this album cover feels like for me.

Fun rock pop album.

Fun little album here. Enjoyed it

Heavy hitting pop album that holds up super well (the big hits do, at least)

Had to make sure I didn't accidentally click on The Cars greatest hits. Apparently they pushed so many singles out of this album. Normally not a fan of this 80s sound but can't help but enjoy this.

Really good debut album. The hits are classics even if the ending songs of the two sides are lacking. It doesn't bring the album down enough to negate how good the other tracks are.

4 stars for best friends girl!

Fantastic! Power Pop at its best. Most bands dream of having this many classic songs over the course of a career let alone a single album.

2/3 of this album are new wave pop bangers that came straight from a bolt of lightning to morph rock radio forever. These dudes are just GOOD, and they happen to bring a snark that can only come from music dweebs in the basement led by the king of the dorks himself, Ric Ocasek. If you turn on classic rock radio you will hear most of this album at some point and every time you’ll be pretty happy you did.

Gorszym dawałem 3, więc temu daje 4

This album was just what I needed.

7/10 This was a nice little surprise. I’ve heard bits and pieces of The Cars before, and may have even spun this record once or twice in the past, but it was nice to get a refresher and listen to it as a while with fresh ears. As an overall feel, there is a lot to like about this. There’s a power pop feel to quite a few tracks, they’re hooky, infectious and have a decent amount of drive to them. The first three tracks in particular just jump out of the speakers and grab your attention, I haven’t got Just What I Needed out of my head all day. On first listen, I did feel that things started dropping off in the second half, but on relistening, I think there’s more quality there than I first heard and it’s only really the last couple of tracks where things start to lose their way. For an album that is quite poppy in tone, there are actually some really interesting choices in terms of structure and composition. Just What I Needed really builds nicely, and the instrumental structure ebbs and flows through the track so that it’s not just a static pop song construction. In fact, they often get quite a lot done in each of their tracks, despite the fact that most of them are only 3-4 minutes long. The production is by and large great, with everything having its place, and great restraint shown with the synth parts to not allow them to dominate the mix, which may have been tempting for an album in 1978. They’re also better instrumentalists than might initially be apparent from the pop sheen of the production. Listen out for some nice fluid guitar solos and some lovely rhythmic blends between the instruments, and you get drawn a little deeper into the music. That said, the last couple of songs do start to get a little dragged down, both pace and production wise. Things get a little muddy and plodding, which unfortunately slows the momentum of the album down as it winds to a close. Regardless of that, I had a great time with this album and will probably take the time to check out some more of their stuff. Good Times Roll - It’s an interesting start with a lack of commitment to where the beat is, which always makes for a cool intro. It’s got a nice pulse and some solid synth lines that augment rather than dominate the sound. The variety of rhythms across the parts is decent too. The ‘Good Time Roll’ vocal harmonisation reminds me a lot of Good Day Sunshine by The Beatles. Nice opener. My Best Friend's Girl - It’s a cool stripped back opening that’s begging for audience participation at a live show. The way the music kicks in is really satisfying with the diving synth and drum fill. There’s a nice strut to the groove, and some really nice riffs and licks. It’s also super hooky, particularly with the vocal harmonies. Another quality track. Just What I Needed - This is a classic. It starts off with quality intro and then the tension build up in the verse as it progresses is great. Then it lulls you in with a break to a synth line instead of a chorus, before building back up again. The chorus is SO good. Hooky pop rock perfection. The ebb and flow of the intensity and instrumentation in the verses is great for maintaining interest, and the lead synth part is superb, despite its simplicity. This one has been hanging around in my head all day and I’m here for it. I'm In Touch With Your World - This is slightly mad in a really fun way. It has echoes of Oingo Boingo about it with the edge of creepiness, and it’s a great way to follow on from such a great pop song. There are some lovely little bits of sound design in there and it keeps threatening to get more coherent and then pulls the rug. Don't Cha Stop - There’s a solid, driving groove to this, but they’re not afraid to break out of it and go a bit off piste with bits like the drum roll driven section. It’s another hooky song but also has some interesting songwriting choices and some cool guitar work too. It feels like they are gathering a lot of influences and creating a really satisfying blend of sounds and again, the depth and subtlety of the electronic instrumentation is great. You're All I've Got Tonight - And now for something more heavy that almost goes stadium rock in places. The synth work is cheesy but excellent, and there’s a good, driving energy to this that I really like. They switch things up rhythmically now and again too, which keeps things fresh. The musicianship is also great. Bye Bye Love - We’re continuing the stadium rock theme now. This perhaps has a bit less of varied interest in terms of the depth of instrumentation and compositional chops, but it’s still a decent effort, and some of the synth work is cheesy gold, especially the filtered synth arp leads. Moving In Stereo - Pace wise, a much more pedestrian song. There are elements of it that are great and it has a very 80s sound despite being a record from 1978, but it doesn’t offer as much quality and impetus as the rest of the album, and as it’s the longest song on the album it does drag a bit too. All Mixed Up - Again, the pace of this stays low and it becomes a bit cluttered and overwhelming in terms of the sound. There are some really decent elements in there, but it all gets a bit lost in a cacophony of sound that doesn’t help the song along to my ear. It’s a shame the tone of the album dropped towards the end of the album, but I suppose a band like this gets nowhere without trying things in the first place.

Cant go wrong with this album. Absolutely one of the best debuts of all time. When they say it should just be their greatest hits album, its for a reason. Endless replay value. 4/5

Memories of searching every, single record store in my city when I heard, "Just What I Needed".... Asking all my friends, "Have you heard THAT song?"

Classic rock and roll, beautiful blend of instruments and voice

Jag gillar detta! Det är lättlyssnat och göttigt.

I very much enjoyed this debut album from The Cars! The first three songs on this album are absolute fire and have a unique sound and vibe that is very quintessential for this band. The rest of the album is fun too but the first three songs are bops! I would listen to this album again in the future!

Some of those songs I knew but didn’t know this was who sang them. Couple songs I weren’t to my liking but overall a good album

Good times indeed

Tight tight TIGHT. This absolutely rules. Talk about a record you could put on anytime.

This is a great album and one of the first albums I ever listened to with friends that wasn't my parents when I was a young teen. I remember just being blown away when a buddy put this on the record player. So different than what I've been listening to up to that point. The album is still a classic to this day. Every song still works. I remember smoking pot and listening to Moving In Stereo with the headphones on and having my mind blown.

I remember a lot more of this album than I realized. Oh nostalgia.

Great album

certified kitchen music

I like this one. Quite a few classics on here. I'll give it a low 4 star rating.

This album is a cornerstone of Boston Classic Rock. This album is really good. It would be excellent if it wasn’t for “I’m In Touch With Your World” and “Don’t Cha Stop”. Those songs were awful. All of the other songs are masterpieces.

They aren’t subtle are they? The Cars drive each song confidently giving off a bold, brash, basic brilliance in their power chords, straightforward bass guitar, bubbly synths, all with a dramatic flare in the vocals and occasional but powerful backing harmonies. There are no subtle digs in what I’m saying here - they have found excellence in pairing down songs to exactly the number of ingredients required to give the listener a big punch of flavour. Nothing is under or overwritten, it's all just exactly right. It is joyful music which is designed to be played loud. I’d seen a lot of chatter about how The Strokes have ripped off The Cars. I don’t understand that at all really, but can confidently say that releasing this album in 1978 puts The Cars solidly ahead of their time and singles them out as influential.

*1978. *35 minutes. *Super fun pop, rock, new wave mix with some big hits. RATING - 7.5/10

Man, what a 1-2-3 punch to start. Very catchy hooks, wry lyricism, and production that sounds ahead of its time. There's new wave, then there's a more energetic and hipper version of new wave heard here. Hell of a debut album indeed.

I didn't realize this was their first album. OR how many great songs came from this one album.

What an album. I forgot how many hits were on this. Really good stuff.

The Good Time definitely rolled!

Great band with a great album

My only Cars story comes from my freshman year of college, well after this album was released and had any relevancy. A guy from my dorm in an effort to be friendly made a remark about the drummer of the Cars being from my small-ish hometown. Anyways I replied 'ya man I don't really care for the Cars that much.' Moral of the story is I was a bit of a prick and the Cars may be a little old hat. But this album is SOLID. Maybe, it is a little dated. Personally I find the opener to be a little corny. But My Best Friends Girl, Just What I Needed, and Your'e All I've Got Tonight are certified bangers. -1 star for Drive not being on this album.

So close to being the second 5 by an artist I'd never heard before. There's perhaps one or two songs not up with t rest but this was great. I realise I probably really like new wave but have only heard a few bands before (Roxy, Talking Heads, and I like them both!). Just What I Needed and All Mixed Up were brilliant.

This is pretty fun, new wave art rock or something. Some funny queen style hits of harmony, some funny lyrics, lots of fun parts. Some really good synth and guitar parts in here too, felt very ahead of its time for 1978. Just what I needed is an absolute banger. I feel like I wanted to like it more than I actually did, but I enjoyed it a lot all the same.

There's a few bangers on here and the rest of the album is pretty cool. I wanted to give it 5 but it's not quite there. 4+!

There's something strangely nostalgic about this album. I keep finding myself reminded of Echo & The Bunnymen for a few months before it pivots. I'm liking this more and more the more I listen.

Enjoyed it! Fun to listen to

****a good upbeat album, easy listening

This album has left an indomitable mark on American pop culture. Real good listen

Can’t believe this isn’t a greatest hits album. Only deduction comes from some songs sounding repetitive. But all those songs are bangers.

First 3 are favorites, moving in stereo, all mixed up

Will be going back to this one. The band have a big bag of tricks which they wisely use sparingly.

Great album, several great songs some of them I knew some of them I didn't. It made me want to listen more music of this band. 4/5.

Some great 80s jams. Pretty cool sound techniques too. Don’t Cha Stop is an earworm that I’m surprised wasn’t a hit back in the day.

I've listened to this album quite a lot as a kid, one of the many CDs my dad just sort of let available for me to burn onto my computer. Before I listened to so much music that my big shuffle folder went beyond insane for even a big music listener, I had maybe 15-20ish albums that I would always hear a few songs every other day or so: The Cars was one of them. And man oh man,. does this album have hooks for days. So many hooks, it's impossible to not hear this album and not have something linger in your head for at least a week. The Cars came at the right musical year of 1978: when the initial wave of punk rock is starting to distillate into a post-punk world, The Cars approached the crossroads of old school rock and roll and the emerging new wave/synthesizer driven music that was to become a big force beyond the disco era. They managed to combine both avenues like how Roxy Music approached glam pop with progressive rock, and make it work. The Cars were one of the big bands of the late 70s (and to very specifically note, again, not the 80s just yet) to make pop rock work with synthesizers to such a degree that it still has that futuristic sound that they went for. Almost ageless, if you don't notice the partially sarcastic lyrics from songs that became used in so many commercials that the sarcasm has been scratched away. In short, The Cars is a solid pop-rock album that helped define New Wave in its infancy. Still sounds great, has its legacy, yadda yadda yadda.

A few too many forgettable tracks, but the hits are strong enough for a solid rating. 4/5 Highlights: Good Times Roll Just What I Needed

Great mix of new wave pop/rock for this debut album by The Cars. Punchy songs with some great guitar makes this a must listen.

I have very fond memories of Just What I Needed because the most chill band I was in did a cover of it and I enjoyed the vibes. I didn’t realize how many of these songs I knew but basically the whole album.

Great album. Has some bangers from my youth. Listened to it a few times

Chock-full of bangers, this is an awesome listen. I was going to give this a solid 3 stars, but on reflection and a little deep diving into the album (1001 Album complaints podcast) I have elevated it to a 4.

This is one hell of a debut album. A breezy 9 tracks and 2/3 of it still gets radio play regularly almost 50 years later. The Cars represent this interesting shift in music. It's got a genuine rock sound with plenty of riffs but the synth is largely present throughout creating an early new wave sound. If the Ramones turned the Beach Boys sound into punk, then The Cars turned it into new wave. Ric Ocasek has a lilt in his delivery that almost sounds like a nerd trying to act cool, but that's not a problem. It's rather fitting for the songs' themes about longing for love from girls that might be out of your league. And when the chorus comes, he's joined by his bandmates, creating an exciting harmony. It punches a stamp on the song that is largely responsible for making these songs classic earworms. The Cars found a great mix of classic rock (even for the late 70s) and new wave that would set the tone for the oncoming 1980s. It works so well and their place in the evolution of rock (and pop) is important and legendary. 4.5 Stars

Shocked that this album didn’t come out in 1985. Hugely influential, very poppy but largely for that reason. Loved All Mixed Up as well as the hit singles

Catchy songs, through and through. Dig the rock/synth sounds.

I love this album

4/5 would listen in my car

Really enjoyable stuff! It was fun to hear them dip into being more Talking Heads-y too.

Another solid new wave offering from the list. This one I probably would've rated 3.5 (rounding down to 3) on songwriting alone, but the fucking about with synths that they did was cool enough to bump it to a 4 for me.

Front to back banger. The Talking Heads vibes were so strong at certain points that they indirectly got Psycho Killer stuck in my head for an afternoon. Standouts: Don't Cha Stop • Bye Bye Love • All Mixed Up
