At the time, it was big, loud, different. Not sure if whole album ages well but the 'hits' are still good.
Tracy Chapman
4/5
How solid of a job is this album if close to what 30 years later a country singer can win an award with it? Also, how sad that happened? Good for Tracy Chapman - your voice on this album is fantastic and should be listened to as a whole not just one song.

People in the 60's were looking for something hard, out came Led Zepplin, Black Sabath, etc. Now fast forward to the 90's and 00's and we are still looking for something new and still hard... out comes Rage. It's not for everyone but for those looking for something HARD you have found it.

Groundbreaking? Not sure but like the play on words. I bet the hardest song for him to sing was only 2:03 long. Reliving losing your friend to such a terrible drug has got to be hard.

Very honkytonk-esque. Kinks really changed through the years too bad the brothers had to fight so much. Maybe that's why they varied musically so much?

Been said several times that it's hard to believe they weren't from the South but like all artists - you find what you like and form your style around it. The Beatles didn't live in the South and hang around the sould/R&B artists of the late 50's early 60's. Get a grip! CCR did it well. Too bad they didn't get along and stay together...
Pixies
3/5

David Bowie
4/5
Too bad Hollywood got stuck on ONE song.
The Byrds
4/5
McGuinn's guitar style and choice blended rock music with folk music... maybe this was an influence for Dylan to pick up and 'electrify' his music?

Way back machine... If you want to hear what 80's pop is listen. This isn't a knock on the album, opposite this is extremely well done.
The Go-Betweens
4/5
Always a shame that good solid bands from 'other' countries don't get a fair shake in countries they don't hail from. Solid song writing and composure.

Tears For Fears

I wonder if this type of 'experimentation' with electronic sound is what groups in the '60s did with tape tracks? The looping, the stories of The Beatles drawing the tape around the room and passed through pencils and stuff to 'adjust' the sound...
Big Brother & The Holding Company
3/5
Bee Gees
3/5
If you are a Saturday Night Fever BeeGee - good luck. The earlier stuff is very much Folk and little falsetto this brings out the musicality of the brothers Gibb.

Cheap Trick
5/5
Sometimes LIVE is 'better' than studio. Tracks 'come alive' and this is prime example as well as Peter Frampton. The energy and direction that the band feeds off of creates an historic album.

Hit and miss, there are outstanding songs and songs that are too involved. They are best when just stripped down and straightforward.
4/5
at the time, I didn't like this album but I know it was the commercial success it attained. years later i came to appreciate the album as a whole.

It is amazing at how dated genres of music can get. Doesn't make music bad or great - it all depends on what age you were during that time. It has been said that your music taste is fully developed late high school early 20's... and if you were that age when this was released awesome!
Massive Attack
2/5
Again, one listen and you can tell what decade this was released. Not my favorite decade as far as music is concerned but alright.

Sometimes I feel that rating on one listen might not be fair to the artist. If I have never heard them then at first blush, it is difficult depending on my mood. This selection is prototypical... I am in the mood for upbeat/punk aggressive and this is not it. It is melodical and smooth. I will need to come back and re-listen.

Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
Never let a style, look, or jam trick you. Outstanding jam record and stands the test of time.
Pavement
3/5
90s version of college rock. Sometimes trying to get the gritty 'low budget' sound you just slightly miss and this could be one case in point. Still Pavement had a few good tunes and shouldn't be swept off of .... the pavement.
Echo And The Bunnymen
4/5
Enjoy the ethereal sounds of Echo. The overlapping sounds and breathy singing really hit home.
3/5
The Specials
5/5
I truly enjoy how The Specials were described early one. Reggae pop. I guess Ska hadn't been created yet. No Doubt, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Bosstones, Reel Big Fish wouldn't have come around if it weren't for The Specials and Madness. Late 70's they bring a fresh energy to the world of pop music. Thank you.

Bruce Springsteen

Richard Hawley
4/5
Smooth voice that doesn't venture far from the 'sweet spot' and that is a sign of a good singer... not needing special post production help to smooth it out.
Emmylou Harris

Christina Aguilera

Of all the Disney kids, she is the voice. Her range and power was/is matched by no other from that era.

Fringe, best way to describe Eno and that is NOT a bad thing. His approach makes music fun. Today, it all sounds the same. That is why this era will always stand out.
Incredible Bongo Band
4/5
Didn't think I would enjoy this as much as I did.
Booker T. & The MG's
4/5
Awesome.
Pink Floyd

Time gone by. The harmonies are flawless.
Herbie Hancock

Never a dull moment with Herbie Hancock
King Crimson

enjoyable can see that groups like The Jayhawks drew a lot of inspiration from.
The Last Shadow Puppets
3/5
Really enjoyed this and could pick up on some influences.
Grateful Dead

Never been a dead head so I find it difficult to get into jam bands which is strange because I do like jazz and that's a true definition of jam band.
Elvis Costello

The Slits

Morrissey

I do not like Morissey, never have never will. The Smiths would have been even bigger with a different condescending front man.
Metallica
2/5
Still think they are overrated and the drummer stinks
The KLF
3/5
Wilco
4/5
Enjoy the contemplative nature of Wilco.
The Kinks
3/5
Skiffle at its best?
Van Morrison
3/5
Time and place to listen to him. Enjoyable.
The Undertones
3/5
Good '80s style... would that be considered stripped down now? Back then it was all they could afford and wanted to feel the analog.
My Bloody Valentine
2/5
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
The Verve
4/5
Too bad the Stones were such money grubbers and too bad The Verve didn't do it the right way... This album is awesome and the band should have been launched but crashed...
Buzzcocks
4/5
Not quite Hard Core Punk to me but definite edge to it.
Bon Jovi
3/5
Solid album of crafted pop rock. Can't deny the commercial success that this had but the overproduction gives rock a bad name.
David Crosby
3/5
The Chemical Brothers
2/5
Not really into techno.
Sam Cooke
4/5
I know there is a bit of editing in this album but long gone are the days of quick smooth transitions...
The Thrills
3/5
There's something here, they certainly have a specific vibe. Wish there was a little more depth in song writing.

David Bowie
3/5
Peter Gabriel
4/5
Enjoyable all the way around.
Cornershop
4/5
I remember when this came out and thought, this is interesting. I wonder where will it go... and as far as midwest US - gone! Thinking most places just played Brim Full of Asha for the novelty too bad. Listen, really listen to the melody and you can find complexity within the simplicity.
The Jam
2/5
Rocket From The Crypt
3/5
Fela Kuti
3/5
David Holmes
2/5
And just like the intro... New York is the s*^t! File this under New York.
Fun Lovin' Criminals
4/5
Enjoyable. They appear to want to find 'the one' and ride it in a more mellow sort of Funk and do it well.
Faith No More
3/5
Strong album but seemed to lack staying power.
Genesis
3/5
You can tell that Peter Gabriel had a lot of influence on the group at the beginning and after he left the more commercial/pop came out. That's not a bad thing but definitely two different bands, a lot like the line up changes in Fleetwood Mac - you see and hear the influences.
Amy Winehouse
3/5
Beck
4/5
Am amazed at how he can 'change' styles and it still feel comfortable for him. Didn't like him when he first came out but am now finding a place for him.
The Strokes
4/5

3/5
Kind of enjoyable. Used to like them back in the day and now they are alright.
Minutemen
4/5
About dang time. Finally seeing some good old fashioned punk music.
John Lennon
3/5
I think John just wanted to get away from the 'pop' of the Beatles and kind of free flowed his muse....
Madonna
2/5
Blinding ray of light
The Shamen
2/5
A little too much 'techno' for me.
Massive Attack

Fishbone
5/5
It's about damn time! Saw these guys in college at a local bar and it was amazing. Still remember it from mid 80's... There are so many more bands like this that should replace a lot of the crap that has been listed. I'll take Fishbone any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Pink Floyd

Not the best but still way ahead of its time.
Marty Robbins
4/5
Let's take a formula and refine it and polish it to perfection. Marty Robbins is a master and telling the 'old western' tale.
The Band
3/5
A few great songs amongst some mediocre recorded songs in BFE New York.
Sonic Youth
4/5
Were they Nirvana before Nirvana? Some say so but i disagree, they are their own entity and are truly better than Nirvana.

I enjoy hearing demos and comparing them to what eventually is released but you can take it too far. I mean if the artist(s) wanted to release the 'demo' then why not?
Milton Nascimento
3/5
Great listen on a cool summer night outside enjoying a beer or whatever beverage you just sip on for a while.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Sometimes he is pretentious and overbearing so I can only take it in small doses.
Basement Jaxx
3/5
Not really my speed but I do see the merit in the style of music. It is executed well.
The Divine Comedy
2/5
Seems to be forcing it a bit but...
TV On The Radio
3/5
The Libertines
4/5
Sisters Of Mercy
3/5
The Beach Boys
3/5
David Ackles
2/5
Joanna Newsom
2/5
Not my cup of tea. I can hear the expression just don't want to hear any of this.
Beastie Boys
3/5
A couple of outstanding tracks and you can tell the groove they were in. Is that good or bad? Up to you.
M.I.A.
3/5
Proof that choosing the right sample is the key. Without The Clash's sample would we even have heard from M.I.A.? Not too sure about that.
Robert Wyatt
2/5
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
Steve Earle
4/5
Solid!
Blur
3/5
The joke song becomes the hit and the rest is solid but can see why a little levity/self sabotage can create something better.
Don McLean
4/5
Title song is alright - played way too much. Wish other songs would get more attention... give it a try.
Fleetwood Mac
3/5
Dolly Parton
4/5
True to country roots but also straight up stories being told with a melody and harmony to match.
Tim Buckley
3/5
The music is time stamped. There is a melody and tempo that is striking throughout the album.
Kings of Leon
3/5
The Dandy Warhols
3/5
I remember the 'buzz' around this group, then the collapse from the greater public eye. Not bad for '90s.
Orange Juice
3/5
I don't buy the online buzz that this group is similar to Television, Buzzcocks, The Byrds... They may have been influenced by these groups but sound more like a precursor to Fine Young Cannbals.,
Brian Wilson
2/5
PJ Harvey
3/5
Leonard Cohen
2/5
Megadeth
3/5
If you look for technicality, look to heavy metal. The technical ability is second to none. With that, sometimes you lose the emotion. Not sure if that's the case here.
Sepultura
2/5
Not a fan but they do have a vibe.
Stevie Wonder
3/5
Not the power house but still very solid and an enjoyable listen.
The B-52's
4/5
This was a shock to a boy in the midwest. Stuff like this was hard to find and didn't find any air time on radio stations stuck in rock and roll motion. It took a while to understand and find the groove for me but it is full of energy and life.
Rush
4/5
Never really liked it growing up and glad I gave it another listen. This is a great album showcasing the diversity and creativity of the trio.

Don't know what to think of this.... is he just trying to create an image? Is he embracing the 'thug life'? It is schtick and very superficial.

Always did not like this band don't ask me why... Maybe it was the lead singer trying to sabotage other acts when they received more applause. Just ask Kansas.
Saint Etienne
4/5
Enjoyable easy listening and not in that 70's category it's just a pleasurable listen.
Cream
3/5
Korn
4/5
If the only thing you see is Freak on a Leash... you will be a better person for it. Notice I said see... the song is awesome but when you can have a visual concept as well it can elevate both.
Lucinda Williams
4/5
First confused her with someone else and was hovering over the button worried about what I was going to hear. Never been so glad to be confused in my life. This album is dirty, gritty, and a force.

There's more to this than There She Goes. yes, that track is catchy and pop-y but listen to the rest and feel a little more depth.
Barry Adamson
2/5
Interesting
Mike Oldfield
3/5
I miss the '70s. The experimentation and 'trippy-ness' of what artists did was amazing but it took The Exorcist to bring attention to this album and the new Virgin label. Maybe this site can expose more one-off artists through time?
Ride
4/5
I really enjoy the aethereal feel to this album and am glad to listen to it and maybe even a better person too.
Isaac Hayes
4/5
Enjoyable and a giant throwback
Bee Gees

Have always liked Neil Young. Voice is not classically the best but the rawness of the melody makes it work well.
Tim Buckley
3/5
R.E.M.
4/5
Oddfellows is the best song on this album IMO... the ability to make it sound so 'disregarding' is a trait unique to REM.

Long before SUV the lyrical gangster - I know it's not THE lyrical gangster but someone throwing 2 dollar words into rap music....
Fiona Apple
3/5
Nothing against Fiona but this list is crap. The second album by her on this list and still no Television, no X, very little attention to punk unless it is NYC based.
That said, her voice and angst is warm and welcoming.
Björk
2/5
Well....
Frank Sinatra
4/5
The exacting precision of the instruments and voice make the slightest nuance amazing.
Santana
4/5
The free flow of the songs is truly genius. The closest to Latin Jazz? Not sure about that but the musicians playing off each other is a trademark of Santana and a must listen to anyone who says they listen to all types of music.
The Mars Volta
3/5
Plain cool listen.
Paul Revere & The Raiders
3/5
Dated but still solid and darn good.
Def Leppard
4/5
In high school when this came out and damn, it was packed and good. Years later, I was able to talk to Phil Collen and I know he wasn't there from the beginning but the thoughtfulness reinforced the straightforward power of the music.

The band's sound was developed well before the hair and pasty look of Robert Smith and this is most certainly a band that you either get or you don't - seems to be no inbetween. It took a while for me to see into the noise.
Barry Adamson
2/5
James Taylor
4/5
Amazing voice and composition. Saw him a few years ago for the first time, others who had seen him before said his voice is not what it was but it doesn't matter. The feeling behind every note is still resonating.
