Reviews (page 12 of 13)

Misled by the name Springfield and that awful cover, I went into this album expecting some country/folk stuff. Turns out it’s soul, clearly not Aretha’s level, but it’s sweet and kinda sexy. Still, she’s not a songwriter and this album was made to boost her sales, so it’s a bit too polished, pop-shaped, and soulless. It will make a perfect fit as family music for Christmas. Mum will love it!

One good song. No thanks to the rest...

Like gastro music, which can’t insult you. nothing special

Son of a Preacher Man revives this a bit

I could have cut-and-pasted my review of her last album onto this one. It's practically the same experience. At least this time SOME of the tracks weren't covers, I guess...

mostly horrible with some strange nuggets of progressiveness that i wouldn't dare searching in such a soup of pop-ness.

The music makes it sound like someone signing karaoke...

Overall: 4/10 I'm gonna concede that this one just isn't my cup of tea. I had to listen to it twice cause I zoned out the first time and it became background noise that I was paying zero attention to. I think her voice is fine and the music is fine but I don't feel that it's something I'll ever want to listen to on a regular basis. Son of a Preacher Man is an absolute banger though. Fav Song: Son of a Preacher Man

Gettin' Dusty in Memphis! It sounds pretty dusty and old timey, for sure. The album was fine though. Nothing super exciting but Dusty has a nice voice. The album has a lot of breathy singing but it's easy listening. Not really my thing and won't listen to much of it again, but a couple of the songs were pleasant surprises. Standouts were "Son Of A Preacher Man" "Breakfast In Bed" and "The Windmills Of Your Mind" 2/5, left me a little bored.

Son of a preacher man is a great song; the rest is very sleepy

good instrumentals, nice and pleasant vocals, just not the type of music i typically enjoy

This was a little too down-tempo for how sleepy I already was this afternoon, which isn't Dusty's fault, but this rating is still going to suffer for it.

A versatile and talented vocalist, there are a lot of great renditions by Dusty Springfield that are worth checking out. Her take on 'Song of A Preacher Man" is pretty good, even involving a little bit of gospel choir in the backing vocals. I don't want to diminish her artistic input in this record but I will say that the whole thing sounds a bit like it was put together by some record execs saying, 'I bet this'll chart.' She shows a versatility here -- this is a bit of a shotgun blast of vocal-centric genres -- but some commitment would've helped. In all, not an unpleasant album but one that fails to land with me because of some biases I have against Top 40, essentially. 2/5

It's not my sort of music, but you can't fault the quality of her voice.

More Dusty?! Gummon m8 She cool though

Standard soul/jazz/pop whatever it is. Nothing interesting.

unfortunately wasn’t for me!

Great one song. Not my cup of tea!

Best song: "Breakfast In Bed". The Lorna Bennett rendition is even better.

5/10 - ok, hotel music, inoffensive

Sorry Dusty, not for me

Not my favorite but thank god for son of a preacher man. Idk what we would do with out hits from the bong

No more live albums

Meh - likely wont listen again

WHY ARE THE DRUMS PANNED COMPLETELY TO THE RIGHT CHANNEL? Idk this is alright. Not very interesting but easy listening. Don't Forget About Me seems decent. Kinda just skimmed it. I wouldn't be annoyed with it playing in the background but it's not engaging enough to keep my attention. She does have a great voice though, so I guess that's enough for me to give it 2/5

I like the hit off this album. But the other songs are too soft for my liking

I can appreciate why some people adore Dusty Springfield and why some people are frustrated that this feels like appropriation. A white english lady singing soul music will do that, I guess. "Son Of A Preacher Man" is a classic, otherwise I'd be content to let this one collect dust. "The Windmills Of Your Mind" gets an honorable mention for sounding like a James Bond song.

Dusty has a great voice for what she does, but what she doesn't do is 'it' for me.

Cuando vieron a la rubia londinense, pensaron it's time for the tea and biscuit.

For some reason I don’t get understand the praise for this album. It’s a hair width away from easy listening. I don’t find her voice very dynamic or exciting. She does a decent sleepy version of Land of Make Believe. Listen to Bobby Gentry for a little more grit.

Bubblegum...in that it's good for a few minutes (Son of a Preacher Man) but quickly loses its flavor after that.

Not my kind of music

A little soft. She was definitely the Caucasian alternative to motown

Son of Preacher Man is one of the greatest songs ever in my opinion. Was hoping for more from this album.

🐣🤷‍♂️

looong album, but a few bangers, felt like a recognized the instrumentals to some of the songs but not the lyrics?

tiring

i have heard of son of a preacher man proper radio shizzle this is lol its chill, just a bit boring

Dusty Springfield, de naam zegt mij niets, maar zie dus wel Son of a Preacher Man erin staan. Dat is een lekkere plaat! Eerste nummer is rustig. Niet heel bijzonder verder. 2e precies hetzelfde. JAAA SON OF A PREACHER MAN. Dat is mij toch een heerlijk nummah. Ff meebleren. Allemaal hetzelfde. 2,5 reten door preacher man.

This was okay. I like Dusty's voice, but overall the music on this album failed to inspire. If only all the tracks had the energy and groove of "Son of a Preacher Man". Standout track: "Son of a Preacher Man"

Hmmm, this was very slow. Like, the most upbeat song was son of a preacher man. I just couldn't get into any of it. Meh

I liked son of a preacher boy but the rest of the album didn't capture my attention

Old school singer, like something my grandparents would enjoy.

Saccharine, breathy and insubstantial. Something about this whole record feels regressive - like she’s a grown woman happy to be considered a silly shallow secondary being. Glimpses of better things that maybe could have been in Son of a Preacher Man and the Windmills of Your Mind; wish the rest wasn’t so buttoned up and sanded down. I hope someone else has since done incredible covers of those two songs.

Easy listening. I liked the later part of the album more.

Some classics and some duds.

Son of a preacher man är alltid en banger.

I wasn’t expecting much and figured this would be a fairly decent album but even with low expectations it just seemed very mid and unmemorable.

Son of a preacher man got me going. Otherwise it was fine to boring.

A few short mostly real slow songs. Sometimes sad pop music, sometimes bouncy pop music. Strings and horns and singing.

Alright with some good moments like in the windmills of my mind or whatever that song was. Combine the other dusty album with this and maybe it’d be worth it have on this list but 2 of them… no way. 2/5

60's Grandma music, light listening. Have heard most popular song

Oh my boring. 1.5 for not completely hating it.

Didn’t want to finish but I did

This is fine, blues-based white lady pop music. Couple of nice songs, but mostly just background music to be honest.

Good ambum probably but not my preference

Mixing R&B and Pop in a good Sense gives you "Son of a Preacher Man", which is probably the Most well known song of the album. The rest of the album stays in a mid-tempo soul sound that just isn't all that interesting.

Doesn't do much for me, sorry Dusty. Too squeaky clean. I prefer a little grit in my oyster.

Honestly? It's fine. Good vocals, a few hits obviously (Son of a Preacher Man, obviously, Windmills of Your Mind); it's a solid R&B/blue-eyed soul album. It's just that it's overproduced and honestly not that interesting in 2025. I can imagine its importance in a historical perspective, but I'm not listening again. For my money, give me Nina Simone, someone not trying to do pop instrumentation and focusing on music that makes you feel something.

Dusty's voice was generally lovely, no question, although it also sounded shrill to me at times on this album, which started to annoy me. That's probably just a stylistic choice I don't personally like, though. Overall this wasn't my thing. Too many mawkish ballads. Dusty's hits - Son of a Preacher Man, Spooky, Windmills - were great songs that I always enjoy listening to. An entire album, less so.

Not bad at all, but not really my jam.

Fine, but not notable.

Boring, one good song

Another album for the "Did this artist deserve to be on this list twice?" pile. Anyway, the music is fine, about what I was expecting, and basically the same as A Girl Called Dusty.

Rhythm section is always grooving. She has a really good voice, just not my type of music. I’ve heard many versions of Son of a Preacher Man, but didn’t know her version was the original.

good enough, but not my vibe

Wasn’t for me at all. If it wasn’t for Son of a Preacher Man it would be a 1⭐️

Couple of familiar songs Windmills of your Mind,

i did not know this was a white woman

Músicas de sitcoms antigas talvez?

Not for me

Sure, “Son of a preacher man” is a classic, but without that this is the music elevator repair men listen to on the way to repair elevators.

Boring with only one good song.

only cared for the hit

Det kan noget når der gives lidt gas, som f.eks. på Son Of A Preacher Man. Men for mange af sangene falder nemt i baggrunden

This is fine. Dusty has a wonderful voice. I'm sure she made many great songwriters happy by singing their songs.

She's obviously a talented singer but this is pretty generic and boring, overall. It was quite a drag and difficult for me to get through. Son a Preacher Man is a classic but the rest is pretty unremarkable, in my opinion.

Son of a Preacher Man is good, but I don't care for the rest of this album.

Not my thing, but it wasn't unlistenable. It was worth it just to listen to "Son of a Preacher Man" and her rendition of "You've Got a Friend".

Gostei dos vocais dela. Mas nenhuma música me chamou muito a atenção. Talvez eu possa ouvir o álbum novamente depois.

One hit wonder

I mean, it's Dusty Springfield. It's what you think it is. Never been one for this type of ballad singing. Not bad, just not really my vibe

- pretty good orchestration - nice vocals but i guess just not my thing - haven’t been paying much attention to lyrics - easy listening - boring; like elevator music

2 Stars (5/15)

I was prepared for Dusty Springfield to be a terrible male country singer from 1980. Just truly a blind spot for me. "Son of a Preacher Man"...is a perfectly arranged song that I enjoy. Then again...it's pretty funny to have actual black back-up singers make the song better in the chorus. Let Darlene Love sing that song and it's better. Truly crazy that wikipedia is telling me Elton John is calling her "the best white singer of all time". The rest of the album feels like I need a pack of Marlboro cigarettes and a failed Tupperware party to get through

About as interesting as watching a drag race between a Toyota Camry and Ford Focus. I just wish it was as short.

Enjoyed this one a bit more than the previous Dusty record I was told to try, but still not terribly thrilling.

2 great songs, some well-produced boring songs.

Is thIs REALLY an album I NEED to hear??!

It's pretty, Son Of A Preacher Man is an all time classic, but as a whole it's pretty dated and not in a good way.

This album passed me by very quickly. Amazing voice, we all know the best song, the rest aren't up alongside it but it's certainly a vibe.

Windmills of your minds jest cute? Nie moja muzyka, przeleciało przeze mnie. Słabe 2.

Lady with a pleasant voice sings songs someone else wrote. Not bad by an means, but nothing stood out.

Son of a Preacher Man is a classic, the rest of the album does not measure up in my opinion.

Random thoughts… I had forgotten that Cypress Hill sampled Preacher Man for “Hits from the Bong” - normally think about Pulp Fiction when I hear it. The US album cover (Dusty with her hands on her face) looks like Keith Richards in drag. Don’t care for these mid 60s albums where a singer is backed up with an overwhelming helping of orchestration. Most folks aren’t Frank Sinatra and they can’t pull it off. Preacher Man is so different from the rest of this album. Would have been better to find more songs in that area.

Honestly pretty unremarkable and underwhelming. Every song sounds almost exactly the same, and that gets old on what's already a really short album. A very pleasant listen, but doesn't really do anything for me outside of one really excellent and engaging song. Top tracks: The Windmills of Your Mind

I don't really get the hype around Dusty. She's not a great album artist and I would really rather listen to Aretha.

Boringgggggggg. - Jon Bercow +1 point for preacher man

ahhhh why are there SO MANY albums which are just the same soft blues jazz country on this list? shes singing great, the album is just boring tho

It's...okay. She has a great voice, but most of the songs were just boring.

'Son of a Preacher Man' is a classic, and what a voice, but not my sort of music.

Apart from Son of a Preacher Man, this is kinda meh. Bunch of thirsty woman songs.

Good. Very nice

boooooooooring!

A little of its time and not really my thing, but her voice is great and Son of a Preacher Man is an absolute banger! 5/10

I hate boomer music sadly. Some songs are cool tho.

After Son of a Preacher Man, I just started to look for covers of that song (as I had assumed Dusty’s wasn’t the original, but it is) and I ended up listening to the Aretha version twice. So my review of Dusty in Memphis is that Aretha Franklin is amazing.

2.4 It's better than the other Dusty album we had.

I genuinely thought I’d enjoy this album more than I did. It’s enjoyable at times, forgettable at most. I guess I just think there’s far better soul albums I’d rather listen to? Favorite song: Son of a Preacher Man Least favorite song: Breakfast In Bed Knew before? No

Light pop with a bit of jazz & country. Nice enough listen

its really okay with a few good songs and many meh songs that I will probably never come back to

Had fun listening to this version of “Son of a Preacher Man”. Good album, just not my type of music. For that reason only, I give this 2 stars based on my personal taste.

Honestly kinda overrated, sorry

Dusty is just that pretty dusty. Her music comes from a past era. It’s tough to get into it for me, but her voice is fantastic and the music is so smooth. She’s good at what she does, but not for me. 5.8/10

it has that one preacher guy song. other than that whatever idc

I wasn't around in the 60s, so it's possible that I'm completely wrong about this, but this just feels like the 60s equivalent of what someone like Ed Sheeran is today. Super famous and popular, but actually really boring when it comes down to it. It feels like this music was made not out of artistic passion, but out of the want to be rich and famous.

This album is carried heavily by Son of a Preacher Man. While that's an amazing song, the rest of the album is very slow, sounds dated, and doesn't have a lot to offer. Not bad by any means but kind of boring. 4/10 (2/5)

Better than expected. Palate cleanser.

I couldn't get into this. I can think of quite a few singers who have tried to sound like her, which is a neat realization after hearing this album. Aside from that, it was a bit boring for me. 2/5

Not for me.

Son of a Preacher man is the only ringer

I'm not entirely sure why this album is labeled as Soul/Jazz. I can get behind calling it blue-eyed soul. But it's really Pop with some jazz influences. She's got a great voice, and the album does a great job of highlighting it on every song. All of the instrumentation is just there to support her singing. Outside of her voice, though, the album is pretty bland. It's a good pop album, but not a great one, and pop is just pretty boring. If it was any singer other than Dusty, this would probably be 1-star.

Smooooooth.

Probably woulda vibed better with it on a diff day

Not a consistent album throughout

This has THE canonical version of Son Of A Preacher Man but other than that I actually found this kind of lacking/boring. Maybe the 'lady pop vocalist' thing has lost some of the shine since the 60's?

Gosh i mean this music genre is just never something I’ll be super into, so listening to an hour + of it was just confirmation that I’ll never look for it. I’m sure it’s great for some but I just don’t see any appeal to it.

I really wanted to like this but it was so boring and beige If all songs sounded like son of a preacher man - the score would have much higher 2 ⭐️

A nice album. A little sleepy. I respect it but wouldn't listen again

It's milquetoast fine. Dusty doesn't emote much emotion with her voice, so the entire album is kind of flat to listen to.

Starting to grow tired of this list tbh

Ok album. Some recognizable songs, but very generic. Her vocals save most of the songs. 2.5/5 Won’t listen again

I kinda liked it.

Something was happening in Memphis in 1969. First Elvis, now this. And while this is probably the better of the things that happened there, it's still a toothless, limpid excuse for an album. This was mum and dad music in '69 and it's music for folks that are long gone. I heard it. What's next?

Son of a Preacher Man. Sounds like 60s feel good jazzy vibes. Part of "symphonic soul" known as the Memphis Sound.

It’s fine. I’ve…had…better

I was really hoping to have my preconceived notions turned on their head, but I was disappointed to find I just can't stand this. I have always hated "Son of a Preacher Man," and that's probably my favorite song on the album. There's no deficiencies here from a musical standpoint, I just don't like Dusty Springfield's voice and I don't like this style of music.

not my vibe

A lovely voice to be sure. I didn't thoroughly enjoy my time with this project, but I didn't hate it either

didn't hit me

She has a very good voice but the songs were eh

Better than the other without the doowap stuff. Good plane napping music so if we’re judging by that, it’s still not my favorite.

Perfect for carly's birthday. Thank god this is the last dusty trombone album we will have to listen to. At least this one had "son of a preacher man". i think i don't really like this older blue-eyed soul bc it comes off as corny when white people do it. I do kind of see the influence of this kind of stuff on someone like Adele or Amy Winehouse (per the wikipedia page)

SON OF A PREACHER MAN SON OF A PREACHER MAN but yeah the rest of the album isn't really for me 2/5

It was ok

Mostly boring.

Pleasant background music

Surprised to find out she’s a Brit with the name Dusty Springfield and an album titled Dusty In Memphis. Love the album name, points for that. Just figured she was a Georgia (or TN) girl based on Son Of A Preacher Man (best song) so kudos on the disguised voice. The rest of the album sounds like it’s from a 60s variety show with some gospel stirred into the background, not bad - just kinda dated. No need to listen again or seek out her other albums (2.2*s)

Son of a preacher man is an all time great song but the rest of the album didn’t do it for me.

Nick in different

Briefly, before I listen to it, I already knew son of a preacher man and love that song! So I'm excited to listen to this album. Listened to the rest of it, not bad, but a little boring in my opinion. Its an easy, chill, 70s album, but i probably wouldn't listen to much.

Son of a Preacher Man is on this. One of the best songs of all time?

Great voice. Just not my thing. Son of a Preacher Man is really good.

Did not like. All the songs blurred together. It wasn't even interesting enough to keep my attention I started doing something else and just had this on in the background. Not my cup of tea. If the songs had other subjects besides just love and relationships this might have gotten a three. But it didn't so its stuck with a two.

Gegen Ende tendenziell besser. Favorit: The windmills of your mind. 2,6.

Has one good song.

I like this, but it didn’t land the way I thought it would. Maybe I was in a bad mood, maybe it’s because while I was listening to it I read about the term “blue-eyed soul” and it left a weird taste in my mouth. That’s life.

I have never been a fan and this did not convince me otherwise

It's 60s torch song stuff, which is fine, if a bit dull - but Son of a Preacher Man is outstanding. The Windmills Of Your Mind, however, is an entirely unnecessary cover - the sort of subtle Bossa Nova inflection really doesn't bring anything and makes me want to hear the Noel Harrison version.

I cannot stand Dusty's song "Spooky" so I'm really glad it's not on this album. that pretty much sums up what I liked about this album

While so much of the 1970s music is directed from here, what Dusty’s airy and weak voice created was all accomplished in higher standard by Diana Ross.

Sometimes a single great sing can elevate an otherwise boring album. Preacher Man is a pretty good song, but in this case I think he rest of the album is so boring and corny that it actually makes me like that song less.

Track 1: Just a Little Lovin’. Track 2: So Much Love Two tracks in and I’m utterly confused about the appropriate amount of lovin! Have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed by this album. Hadn't heard too much Dusty Springfield, but liked what I'd heard and had high hopes. I guess it's just not as soulful as I expected it to be. 🤷

Didn't know Pugacheva had songs in English Pretty soft, pretty boring

I felt like cleaning the dusty ceiling fans when listening to this one. Man that joke sucked. Son of a Preacher Man is a certified banger. Outside of that, this one’s pretty forgettable to me. Run of the mill folk music, which a lot of folks at the time were doing better.

This album has a lottt of filler and I'm surprised it makes the list because her only popular song is a cover. She has a good voice but this feels like "white people soul" and, aside from Son of a Preacher Man, I don't care for it.

Oh the innuendo

Not for me

This is not the typical kind of music I listen to, but I can see the appeal. Springfield has a beautiful, sultry voice, which I think is best part of this album. However, there wasn't really a standout song for me on this album.

Some beautiful, classic songs but not something I'd listen to intentionally. Great for a movie sound track.

Breathy & mellow

Realized after a while that I was listening to the deluxe version. Was thinking I like the album but just a little too long. The original version would have been the perfect length and I would have enjoyed that more.

With the notable exception of songs that featured in Pulp Fiction, as well as The Windmills of Your Mind, I find the music here errs on the too mild side of things.

Genre: unknown Instruments: 3/5 Modern Translation: 2/5 Dance Potential: 2/5 Listening Location: walk to work Favourite Song: son of a preacher man Made me feel: aside from this song that really just reminds me of my dad and a convertible, the rest of the album wasn’t that noteworthy.

Soul, Pop, Blues, etwas flach

Not my favorite genre.

Two stars for the only two songs I could tolerate: son of a preacher man & don’t forget about me. Cool her name is Dusty though lol.

36/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 She had a nice voice and at times, the instrumentation was almost interesting, but these two factors couldn't really make up for the otherwise soporific nature of the album.

Helt ok, inte min smak

Not overwhelmed.

The voice initially piqued my interest, but boredom soon found a new friend.

Couldn’t get through it, not my thing

Old but g.... Wait, it's just old anyway

I don't really care for this dusty broad.

Kedeligt, kan ikke helt reddes af Son of a preacher man, som er konge

Bravi, sia strumenti che voce. Noioso

This didn't really click with me. I'm not a big fan of that old symphonic band for lead singer sound. Standout Track: Son of a Preacher Man

She has a lovely voice, but the songs are just too slow for me in general.

Was pleasantly surprised, but wouldn't listen again.

No doubt influential, but not doing much for me. The Windmills of Your Mind is good. ** 1/2

Beautiful voice. Meh songs. Very forgettable.

Quite forgettable

not my style

2/5. I would definitely give this a 2.5 if they allowed the half star ratings, so while I enjoyed the album, it is just totally not my taste or style.

- eh - a little low energy, but the songs were fine - her voice was good but most of the songs lacked power - 2.5 round down

other than the song everyone knows, this is a bit of a bore

A lot of ballads. TIL she's the one who sings "Son of a Preacher". Pretty sure opening track is about morning sex.

Found a lot of it bland, but the nostalgia was nice. No easy way down was a new discovery for me that I enjoyed.

What? 2.0

Im not gonna pretend son of a preacher man isnt a banger and a half.

I was excited to listen to the whole album, because who doesn't love "Son of a Preacher Man," but honestly the rest of it had a sound that felt strangely empty. It yearns for a blues feel, but doesn't hold up because of the wispy nature of her voice. I wanted so much to love this.

Son of a preacher man. Great. Rest of the album, not great.

Mostly sleepy country. A couple hits like Son of a Preacher Man and Windmill of My Mind.

Some interesting moments (Son of a Preacher Man, I Don’t Want to Hear It Anymore) but they get lost in a sea of generic pop.

Had it on during dinner. Really gets repetitive after Son of a Preacher Man. Not a hit with the family, wife considering her options now. Thanks for NOTHING DUSTY.

She has a great singing voice, but this album is just too dated for me.

boring

Not bad but not for me

It’s pretty but it’s not the kind of music I’d listen to unless I’m in a very specific mood. Good music but it kind of just made me sad.

Pretty boring. It has been nice to have on in the background while I have been studying, but overall not very exciting or interesting.

'Son Of A Preacher Man' is natuurlijk een bekend nummer maar verder valt dit toch wel tegen. Mevrouw heeft een mooie stem maar kan niet echt iets te weeg brengen bij mij. Wel goede muzikanten overigens.

No bueno. Son of a preacher man

Not bad but not for me

A little soft

i like her voice good sounding music recognized son of a preacher which was fun to learn the origin of that song. pretty love song focused which i dont really enjoy but still a good singer and good music.

I was left wanting more.

Does it annoy anyone else that son of a preacher man was written by a white brit?

Not my type of music. I used to like "Son of the Preacher Man", but probably I remember this song from covers or different arrangements, because the version on the album was quite slow and raw, in my opinion. And so is the rest of the album, but without that catchy phrase. Altogether, just a below average record for today's standards.

A decent Sunday morning record. A few highlights along the way with a fair amount of good but ultimately forgettable somgs

Listened Before? N Mehhhhhhhh. She's a great singer but this is not my style. The one song I recognize here is "Son of a Preacher Man", of course. I'm a genxer, Pulp Fiction brought that song to me and I kinda liked it then it got overplayed in the early 90s. So I'm really not a huge fan of this record in general. Couldn't finish it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Son of a Preacher Man

Elevator music. Devoid if value.

I liked the up tempo songs but the rest was a bit slow. Nice voice I suppose.

She has that one song though.

listened to it twice since i didn't absorb much the first time while passively listening. nice, calming songs but not what i'd typically seek out or listen to frequently. favorite songs: the windmills of your mind, no easy way down

Ehhh very air supply feeling. Best song was definitely Son of a Preacher Man

It’s just alright

Dnl tbh

Not quite me

Another one that is quite beloved but not by me. Rather bores me for the most part. But I do really love "Son of a Preacher Man" - go figure!

Not my kind of music.

Son of a Preacher Man is almost cool enough to save it on it's own but nah

Preachers son... classic! Talented artist, but not for me.

Not an every day album, but definitely has a time and place to be ideal listening.

Beautiful voice, yet apart from Son of a Preacher Man, the songs were largely forgettable.

She's got a good voice but pretty boring music overall. Son of a preacher is a classic.

Just a little lovin provides an excellently smoky start to this album, giving us a picture of Itchy Summerfield as a singer in the basement of a club singing to the regulars. However, this is a bit of a ruse as the rest of the album slips back into typical upbeat female crooner led late 60s pop. It’s not bad, but it isn’t doing much for me. The track of note here is obviously Son of a Preacher Man, which deserves every ounce of praise and admiration it has received over the years. Just a fantastic song, bringing together a funky rhythm with gospely singing. I can’t help but still think Urethra Franklin provides a more inspired lead on her version, but as the original this version deserves attention. At least on that track, Crusty’s vocal starts soft and gets somewhat excited towards the end but ultimately doesn’t drive us home with the conviction you want. Ultimately a lot of this album is forgettable. There’s a few decent tracks, one good track, and a bunch of filler.

It was fine but I wasn’t a huge fan. It was cool to recognize some of the classics from this album.

Decent

Great voice, but a sound that is dated. Getting boring after a few songs

The Son of a Preacher Man is the only song that is not boring to listen to, in sound and text. The rest is all sad shit.

Love Dusty, another one where the whole album disappointed but the famous ones didn't. My mum would have loved it.

As I get older I appreciate female vocals and in particular soulful female vocals more. Stunning voice. Lots of different songwriters on this, all interpreted by Dusty Springfield, although that was the norm I still can’t get my head around that setup. There’s a huge amount of emotion in that voice, from joy to pain. It’s clearly the voice of a British singer but I don’t know how that comes across. It does tend to turn a bit overly dramatic screechy voice and strings though and after a while the voice is sickly-sweet to my ears. 11 songs less than 33 minutes. It doesn’t help me to read that she couldn’t identify with some of the lyrics, that kills it for me, makes it fake, like an actress going through the motions, surely some soul is lost in that process ? I do like the start of each song though, the reflective soulful bits before it all goes ott and gets too much, but the latter is inevitable as I swear each song structure is the same.

Ok I guess. I don't really like Son of a Preach Man, but the rest was ok. 2/5

"Son of a Preacher Man" is an all time classic. The rest of the songs are fine but aren't particularly memorable. This should have been the only Dusty album included on the list, and the other one should have been cut. 2 dust bunnies out of 5

Too boring to listen all the way through

I'd had enough of this one a lot quicker than I thought.

Honestly, pretty meh. Son of a Preacher Man is obviously a heater, but the rest of the album is pretty boring. Also, Dusty Springfield is English, which makes the whole act/theme seem pretty disingenuous. Probably won't revisit too much. Standouts: Son of a Preacher Man, I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore, The Windmills of Your Mind

Decent album but I wasn’t into it

I mean, she's got a great voice and all but it's still cheesy AF. Why did everything Dusty Springfield produce feel about 10 years behind the times? This was released in '69, for goodness sakes. It was a monster year of absolutely game-changing releases... but here we have Dusty, singing songs that belong in the previous decade. How this made it on the list, I don't know. It can't compare to "Abbey Road", "Nashville Skyline", "Tommy", "Led Zeppelin II", "The Stooges", or "In A Silent Way". It's just not even in the same weight class. And, for the record, I prefer Aretha's "Son Of A Preacher Man" to this one hands down, any day.

ok album

This was an album.

As a child of the late 70s and 80s, this strain of popular music always makes me think of those scenes in TV shows where they show the protagonist walking through an urban landscape in a montage. Or Sesame Street. There was always music like this on Sesame Street - I'm guessing they weren't always getting the latest, greatest acts. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's what you'd expect to hear in a smoky, slightly run-down supper club or on a variety show (Lawrence Welk, anyone?). I am aware that the supper club and variety show acts were copying these more popular, innovative acts, so it's not really a fair evaluation, But I just can't get past it. "Son of a Preacher Man" is impressive - Dusty can belt it out, no doubt - but overall? I don't need to hear this again

Whiney americana not my thing

Possibly everyone knows “Son of a Preacher Man”. Other than that the album isn’t really memorable imo. A lot of slow songs that neatly blend into each other. Favorite Song(s): “Son of a Preacher Man”, “No Easy Way Down”

Meh, not really into "Blue-eyed soul". It's kind of like English food is to actual soul food. Know what I mean?

Starting off an album with a tune about wake up sex is kind of special. There are a few great songs on here along with a fair amount of garbage. She has a very good, but not brilliant, voice in my opinion. No Easy Way Down is so good. But now I don’t need to hear any of this again. Except maybe when Jan sings Son of a Preacher Man at the baby shower on the The Office.

This album has one good song and the rest is completely forgettable and sometimes not even good. but Son of a Preacher Man is really good.

jaja fin sång inget speciellt

Bof.

Yeah, this is fine. Won’t be chasing it down, but happy I listened, Dusty is just not My Thing™️. 2.5

just not for me. Son of a Preacher Man can't rescue the rest of this for me.

The sound was more Paris than Memphis. Is she singing to her French lover who is beckoning her across the shag carpet to the pedal covered bed? The album cover has her in lace and I can't help but wonder... is this her slip? Are we already in her bedroom? Her voice is seductive and a couple of songs really stood beyond that general sultry (Son of a Preacher Man) nature. But that energy is stuck in the transition from the 60's to the 70's--leaving a modern listener feeling that it is Mrs. Robinson's mother pulling you into the bedroom and no longer the free love of the youth.

I really enjoyed "The Windmills of Your Mind" and nothing else ever came close. Great singer/voice, just didn't care for most of the songs.

Meh. 5/10

1001 songs you have to hear before you die, sure, I'll give you that for "Son Of A Preacher Man". If the albums was "Dusty Springfield and a ton of songwriters and a bunch of studio musicians In Memphis", then I might be more inclined to appreciate the album on the whole. But the album is "Dusty In Memphis", and if all we're talking about is what Dusty brings to these tracks, I don't see it as something that merits being in this top 1001.

Une bonne chanson

It was fine. I liked the positive, 'spread the love' attitude of the album, but couldn't get into many of the songs, especially in the second half. 4/10

Mukavasti soi taustalla vaikkei kyllä suuria tunteita heränny

Album full of love ballads isnt my thing. Son of a preacher man saves it a bit though

The mostly short songs contribute to the listenability of this album. The bass beats create tempo and fill in the voids of her vocals.

I think of Dusty as a "one hit wonder". Before listening to the album, my view was that Son of a Preacher Man was good enough to get a 3 no matter what the rest of the album was like. I changed my mind after listening. The soulful songs So Much Love and Don't Forget About Me are good tunes but I found the rest of them painful. Breakfast in Bed is also OK but only if you hear the voice but don't listen to the words. When you pay attention to the words, you realize how lame these songs are. There is no doubt that her voice is superb but I really can't get into her using her lovely gift to sing soap opera lyrics over insipid orchestration It's just a little too white for this white guy.

It's ok if you really like the 60s ballads

Pretty straightforward "blue-eyed soul". Hard to tell if I liked Son of a Preacher Man because it's especially good, or if it's just familiar.

ive no idea what to expect. OH nice start. second song meh. third song is/was popular apparently, lyrics are fun lol. 'i dont want to hear it anymore' im here for this sad song tbh. most songs end pretty abruptly. okay im done after the mess of different versions at the end anddd theres some okay tracks, ive saved two, i dont think im coming back to this even though it wasnt unpleasnt or anything.

Dos álbumes seguidos de Dusty. Entiendo la emoción, pero hasta ahí.

do you like swooping strings? well you're gonna love dusty springfield. son of a preacher man - huge windmills of your mind - big + lots of filler.

Not a unique enough voice for me to class this album as a standout. The tracks are equally as mundane. 2 Stars!

If nothing else, this is a very good SOUNDING album, well produced. The music sounds good, but is a bit one note. For someone who thought Dusty Springfield was a one hit wonder this is a pleasant surprise. Sounds almost like a female Isaac Hayes (or he like her) the orchestration, the back up singers and horns. The hook on Son of a Preacher man is undeniable. Awesome drum sound throughout, especially the first few songs. Love the guitar noodling on track 5. Track 7 has a great crescendo. I like it when the end of the album goes a bit more boho and experimental, sitars, Spanish guitar, chimes, interesting word play—I kind of like the Jefferson starship leanings here better than the R&B sex ballads. Track 8 almost gets to a 007 intro, epic vibe. Overall, fun to explore the album, sounded nice, but ultimate background more music.

It's not bad, but it's not my kind of music, so i kind of have to give a lower rating to distinguish from the other albums so far.

"Too old and too frivolic", schreef ik. Dat bekruipt me nu ook. Best leuke liedjes, maar niet voor mij.
