I liked this one. I really like the collaboration on Stan. Overall very good and would listen again.

The album is a bit too long; most of the second half is just mediocre hip-hop. But a few of the tracks are truly phenomenal. The level of sarcasm is just right.
Tried it at least, definitely wasn’t my scene. But could appreciate the production value.

Crude, rude, unforgettable dude.
Quite explicit, sometimes seems to be just for the sake of outrage and shock value rather than because it actually adds anything. Hard-hitting and candid on the non-skit tracks (of which there were too many for my taste), would prefer more in this style. Really enjoyed Stan, The way I am and I'm back, all of which I knew from before. Perhaps the other tracks may grow on me, but as already stated, the overly explicit nature of some tracks, apparently just for the sake of being that, makes me hesitant to bother listening to the whole album again.
"Kim" is really uncomfortable. But the rest has its qualities, though a lot/most of the lyrics are unsettling.
The lyrics are a lot more messed up than I remember, but this album slaps as hard as it did back in middle school. Another 5 for nostalgia.
Very aggressive and hardcore. The lyrics are dark, vulgar, descriptive, obscene, and offensive, and each song tell a particular story. The sound is okay, and the album, in general, is fine, but I wouldn't listen to the entire thing again. The album was a shock, and the opening skit was ridiculous. The blatant and corny homophobia and misogyny are hard to get through, which I am sure would not have made it anytime. Kim was unsettling and uncomfortable in general, but a couple of songs were pretty good. Kan Tariff was, again, ridiculous and uncomfortable to listen to. The language was a just little too much.

The Eminem Show was the album that got me into rap as an impressionable pre-teen, so I may be biased, but I still think that's the more consistent, better album and it's crazy that it hasn't made this list. Anyway, this one is close behind. He switches between so many voices (literally and figuratively) so effortlessly - the biggest singles (Stan, The Real Slim Shady, The Way I Am) sum up Eminem's depth, humour and anger respectively, and they all work equally well. There are undoubtedly lyrics on here that are genuinely problematic, but there are also a lot that aren't - they're cartoonishly OTT or satirical or playful -and that's why he gets away with the whole package, in my opinion. Every topic is pushed to its limits, but it's not *just* designed to shock - there's a lot of truth spoken too. So the lines between sincerity and facetiousness are blurred, which just makes the whole schtick (or is it...?!) very compelling. 4.5
I wonder why a couple of the tracks are unavailable on Spotify. Outdated lyrics? I expected this to sound much more "of its time", but nah. Still absolutely love it. A great intro to hip hop for a 12 year old middle class white boy, but I reckon there's something for everyone in here. Ending to Kim is still too grim to listen to. I always skip over it
Good album, one of Eminem’s scarier albums as he uses his music to fantasize about handling his personal problems in a violent fashion.

2000. Stan, The Real Slim Shady
this man says some weird shit. but he made a career out of it and i respect that. some of the lyrics are just gross though
As a non-rap-fan I guess I can still recognize that Eminem is pretty talented and has a way with words. That said, I still don't like rap and his lyrics pretty horrible despite his way with words. At least half of everything he has to say is a mixture of swear words, homophobia, domestic violence and "I'm white, deal with it". Stan is a good song and I spent the album hoping for another track with such high quality, but couldn't find it. I liked Kim and the D12 parts of Under The Influence. But that was it.
Surprisingly acceptable since I don’t really like rap/hip-hop. I did accidentally download the censored version which sucked a lot of joy out with the whole flow being destroyed by constant missing words - but that also means it’s full of swearing which is an odd lack of variety and articulation against the clever wordplay throughout including a joke about being a bad influence on 4&5 year olds! Eminem has a far less harsh and annoying voice than I recall. Mostly clever and listenable.
Lyrically I just didn’t like it. The misogyny and homophobia was just horrible
Long story short: Years ago I was working through some stuff related to my spiritual life, and wrote music and lyrics to an entire LP that I never necessarily intended to see the light of day. Well, it did, and not on my terms, and the final product was personally disappointing and left me angry at the people who forced it. That was a long time ago and I’m over it now. But it gives me reason to wonder if a similar thing wasn’t going on in the creation of 'The Marshall Mathers LP,' the self-professed anxious, angry thoughts of a man trying desperately to work through, and out, his own shit: betrayal from family and lovers, the extraordinarily excessive demands and expectations of fame, the hypocrisy of the music industry and virtually every cultural institution one came name in 21st century America. A friend of mine told me once that one of the first things one can do, finding oneself down a deep hole, is to at least stop digging! Eminem’s alternative strategy on 'The Marshall Mathers LP'? To keep digging ‘till he hits China, and then take it over the top… way over… from the beginning all the way to the graphic end: ‘And I am whatever you say I am. If I wasn’t then why would you say I am… Then attack Eminem ‘cause I rap this way. But I’m glad ‘cause they feed me the fuel that I need for the fire to burn and its’ burning and I have returned!’ And again, from the same track, ‘The Way I Am’: ‘I’m so sick and tired of being admired that I wish I would just die or get fired… And I’m thankful for every fan that I get, but I can’t take a shit in the bathroom without someone standing in it.’ Am I to blame for all that’s bad in the culture, Eminem asks on ‘Who Knew?’ Are rappers (or head banging metal heads) the root cause of tragic events like school shootings, or shouldn’t that responsibility rest more on the parents of the shooters? Interesting, too, that on ‘I’m Back,’ the song in which the Columbine school massacre was referenced, YouTube chose to censor the words ‘children’ and ‘Columbine,’ but apparently felt no discomfort about leaving in the line about Eminem fucking his mother ‘with no rubber and come inside her!’ Look, this LP is ugly, and for a reason. I think Eminem just threw his hands up at this point in his career and said if you’re going to come at me with pitchforks and torches like the mob that tried to destroy Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, then I’ll just super-size that motherfucker to Godzilla-like proportions and really give you something to target. I think taking any of this literally is absolutely missing the point. Extreme? Definitely. Too extreme? I wouldn’t be comfortable rapping it. But it’s not my recording, is it? Neither is it my journey. Forget the lyrics just for a moment if you can, if you dare, and listen to the enormous talent of this guy, an extraordinary rapper. One in a million. He spits out rhymes in an insanely unique fashion. At least give him that. And with the assist of Dr Dre’s signature West Coast sound (the coolest groove around) and traveling with a posse of like-minded artists (Snoop Dogg probably being the best known), this is a great LP. For adults. Not for kids. Or maybe it’s a perfect LP for parents and kids to listen together and learn about things like hyperbole, for example. Not to mention the danger censoring art holds for freedom of speech, the very first amendment to the American constitution. ‘I’m a criminal,’ Eminem closes 'The Marshall Mathers LP' with, ‘Cause every time I write a rhyme these people think it’s a crime to tell ‘em what’s on my mind. I guess I’m a criminal but I don’t gotta say a word. I just flip ‘em the bird and keep going. I don’t take shit from no one.’ It’s not that Eminem shouldn’t have written all of this, every goddamned word, or that it shouldn’t have ever been recorded. Rather, the problem was that a lot of folks should have never heard it. And when they did, if they weren’t emotionally mature enough to understand the kind of art it truly is- a specialized work, not meant for mass consumption- then they became the problem, the real insult, not Eminem. And don’t you dare think for a minute that Eminem isn’t bearing his own consequences for his art. But that’s his shit. You bear your own- which will be more than enough work to occupy the remainder of your time on earth- and shut the fuck up about his. ‘Ha ha (‘Slim Shady’), I guess there’s a Slim Shady in all of us.’ ‘Blessed are the merciful for they shall be shown mercy.’ I’m only talking to you right now, listener. I’ll talk to Eminem later, if I ever get the chance.
Virtuosic rapping, but the beats are honestly lackluster in some songs, and the whole thing neatly fits into the definition of "too much" sometimes.
Packed with trailer rage and raps like never before seen. An early and incredible success of an album. A modern version could cut out like 3 or 4 tracks, but it still slaps.
Brilliant in its way, but not something I’d want to listen to every day. “Stan” is one of the best short stories ever set to music.
Thanks to these Eminem clowns, I'm no longer a glass half full guy. I had a 30 minute drive so thought I'd start listening to this in the car. Quick search for Marshall Mathers and hit play. As expected, shitty rap made by dumb ass white guys wasn't doing it for me. I took a quick look and saw the playing time was north of 70 minutes. Sometimes with 1001 you just have to do the hard time and hope it passes quickly. I get through 8 songs and later at home flip the album on Spotify to finish my sentence. But - something's wrong. I notice the playing time is a little less than what I was playing in the car. It was a 78 min album in the car and a 72 min album at home. I'm confused. The unfortunate explanation for my confusion is that there is another Eminem album called The Marshall Mathers LP 2 and I mistakenly listened to 30 minutes of the wrong Marshall Mathers album. The horror! If you thought 72 minutes of this shit was heavy lifting, try 102 minutes. The glass half full guy I was until today might say: "Hey I could have listened to the full Marshall Mathers 2 album before finding out," but no, I can't be that person today. Those extra 30 minutes were too painful. My glass is half empty.
It's too bad that he relies so heavily on dropping F-bombs and violent, hateful lyrics designed to shock listeners, because some of the music is alright. The best part for me was being re-introduced to that Dido song.
Long time lurker, first time listener ... to an entire Eminem album. Whoa this is one angry white dude. His lyrical dexterity is pretty impressive though, he seemingly can make any sentence rhyme and he sprays the room with words like it’s from an AK47. His misogynistic, homophobic and sophomoric schtick gets old after awhile though, or is he actually railing against all that, dunno because it’s a fine line. Dude needs to chill a bit though. I thought Stan which sampled Dido was nice.

Awesome. Needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Lyrics are a bit raunchy, so you need to be able to separate fact and fiction, and understand where he's using metaphors, acting, etc.
Homophobic and misogynistic.
This is so hard to rate!! I'm trying not to overthink this because there's so many factors. Big main positive factors include; artistic/creative genius, unique voice and rap style, unashamed discussion of hard-hitting topics, an intense journey mapped out through listening to one album. Big main negative factors include; what could be perceived as misogyny, homophobia, profiting off of the world's deepest misery, promoting/potentially inspiring domestic violence. I have to appreciate how incredibly deep and influential this album is/was but also I can't say I simply love it, it's too complex so I think the best route to take for me is a 3. I am so torn between the very top and the very bottom and I think that is actually part of the beauty (is beauty the right word? It's fascinating) of this album and a lot of Eminem's work.
Emminem is good at telling stories and I like some of his songs. With this album I get the appeal if hearing someone talk about extreme/taboo stuff, and yeah maybe there's irony or its a caricature or whatever, or its purposefully inflamitary/shocking, but in general I thought 'nah', whatever way I look at it, the answer is generally 'nah'.
Hard to know what I thought of this. Like I enjoyed a lot of it and know Eminem is a rather a legend, I guess a lot of it is story telling but I did find all the racism, sexism and homophobia a little jarring.
Eminem. I really loved Eminem as a teenager, the Eminem Show is absolute genius. This album shows him on the way to that and it is a fantastic album but I think his style got cleverer with subsequent albums. This album is in places difficult to listen to but I do get the reasoning behind it all and I think it's very good. The political edge of Slim Shady is very interesting and this album seems to be wholly about Eminem attracting mainstream attention at being a white man rapping when his black contemporaries had been doing the same thing for ages sparks very true and is evident in the fact I loved Eminem and he made it so big in the UK when no one I knew of was listening to Dr Dre or anything similar.

I mean it’s good. I feel like a bad person for listening to it though. I can’t reconcile the violence against women, homophobia and I think racism. Even if he’s rapping about people who think like that, there’s not enough distinction in the text that’s what his intention is. The talent is undeniable. The message is terrible.
3,5; classic from Em undoubtedly, it has a lot of Eminem in it, but imo it aged very poorly, starting with homophobic lyrics, ending on old-fashioned voice modulation and beats, even though album contains 2 classics like Stan or Real Slim Shady. Some of another songs are enjoyable as well and they have really unique vibe, I think that I should mention the song Kim at this point.

He is a talented song writer and his lyrics can be great when he wants them to be. Like most electronic music though it just isn't something I can get into.
Can't decide if this album is Eminem's justification of being a douche bag or more proof that he is. It's so over the top offensive on so many levels it borders on an attempt at comedy or parody and clearly, Eminem is trying way too hard to be taken seriously. I feel justified for dismissing him for all these years because it is as horrible as I thought it would be.
This is the first full Eminem album I've listened to. I understand why it's on this list, but I'll probably only continue to listen to the hits. This stressed me out.

It's Eminem, pretty much every person's stepping stone to hip hop and rap. Everyone knows at least a few songs on MMLP, The Real Slim Shady and Stan to name a couple. There are gems all around too, with Criminal, The Way I Am, and I'm Back being the most memorable. The production and the beats on this is fantastic and makes a whole album of a genre I'm not a fan of really enjoyable. It might not be one of those albums that can be played anywhere anytime, but it's definitely an essential listen.

Oh Slim, you poor boy sitting on your porch wondering what the world can offer you and how you put your fist so far up the worlds rear to prove that you are the next big rapper. I enjoyed parts of this LP but I'm like a midpoint Eminem fan, his old stuff is very vulgar which is ironic because I typically don't care about that but you can tell that he is trying to be very aggressive on this album. Every other song started getting me upset or nervous just feeling like I was being personally attacked by Marshall. He definitely hits every gender, race, and creed in his insults. People are upset at Dave Chappell for his comments about the trans community but I'm wondering what they would think about some of these tracks. But there are some bangers on here too: Stan, The real Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers, Drug Ballad.
I'm officially announcing that Eminem is overrated. Not because this album is bad (it's not), but because this is supposedly his masterpiece, and I personally don't see it. Yeah, some excellent songs on here, but it's also riddled with the skits that bogged down so many early '00s rap projects, including at least one sex skit that demands a skip and prevents this from getting any higher than a 4 star rating. I don't know, I think I prefer the Slim Shady LP and even Eminem Show to this one. The highs are very high, but most of it is in a middle ground that doesn't stick with me, and the skits range from unnecessary to painful. Still a good album and solid overall, but I can't really co-sign the classic status. Blame Ken Kaniff, not me. Favorite tracks: Stan, I'm Back, The Real Slim Shady, Who Knew, Kill You. Album art: Some have a picture of him next to some decrepit piece of furniture, I'm guessing in the house, and some are this shot of him outside the house. Either way, it's clear that he's plumbing the depths of his psyche, and I respect that. I wish it was more saturated, but it's fine. 3.5/5
Imprescindible de Eminem
Always polarizing, always enthralling, always relevant. Startlingly precise on one hand (Stan, That's What I Am, Drug Ballad) and horribly dated on the other (I'm Back, Marshall Mathers, the skits), The Marshall Mathers LP is the quintessential Eminem album with cultural touchstones and an insight into the life and times of the soon to be Rap God. An essential listen. P.S., Kim is not for the fainthearted. Favorites: Stan, That's What I Am, The Real Slim Shady, Remember Me?, Drug Ballad, Amityville, Bitch Please II.

Not really my thing. Makes me quite uncomfortable listening to it. I guess that might have been the point, but really not for me.
This album is one that I have grown up with before and it remains one of the best rap albums out there. To start, in terms of instrumentation, they are beautifully crafted by Dre. Whether it is the infamous The Real Slim Shady or Criminal or any inbetween they are always enjoyable. In terms of rapping, Eminem delivers unique candence and flow throughout every track, with all of them sounding perfectly tailored for every track, such as the I sit back/ with this pack etc etc. His delivery is aggressive whether it is the way I am or Kim, you can feel the rage behind this album constantly and may even rally behind it. Subject matter and theming was unique for the time focusing on censorship and the media in reaction to his music on songs like drug ballad, who knew and marshall mathers. It also has the idea of fandom and standom in Stan showing the deep and various ideas this album contributed to the rap scene. I will conclude this with features, they do not miss, Dido adds a necessary chorus to complete Stan, sticky fingaz delivers a verse that arguably outclasses Eminem on Remember Me? and Snoop Dogg delivers his clean flow on Bitch Please II.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would .
This is a better album than the Slim Shady LP. That being said, I rated Slim Shady as a 5 and this a 4. The reason is that while Shady was subpar to this album, what it represents, what it introduced, and what it made possible in terms of Mathers, hip-hop, and the future of the genre is much more powerful than what this album represents. I remember buying this record the day it came out and listening to it in my car CD player over and over. Stan is a standout achievement for sure. I knew it backwards and forwards, and while it's great, it's also dated now, a little derivative, and still in my opinion not his best work, which comes with Encore, after which, he never achieves that level of quality ever again.

this album is way better than i remember. time to pick some tracks for mood playlists. not the skit tracks, which i nonetheless enjoy v much.
"I murder a rhyme one word at a time / you never heard of a mind as perverted as mine" was pretty much the manifesto for this album. Fantastic production, unbelievable rhyming and delivery. Scary, very offensive lyrics which are very hard to stomach at times, but that was the point. To be this offensive and still be a classic in these times is quite a feat.

Znam da više govori nostalgija, al znači mi ovaj album puno i nisam mu mogao dati ispod petice. Jedino Ken Keniff smeta na albumu i Kim je scary, ovo ostalo - klasik. Bitch Please II mi je najslušanija sa albuma, znam svakog odglumit i odrepat. Who Knew isto, ma i Real Slim Shady, ma sve jebote. Ako se osvrnem ovako, rekao bih da je ovo njegov najbolji album. Šteta stvarno što nema da se rejta do desetke, jer ne bi bila čista desetka, al bi bila jaka devetka. Luka's ranking = MMLP > TES > SSLP > Relapse > Recovery >> Encore >>> ostatak.

It’s raunchy it’s crude. It’s vulgar. It’s violent. It’s amazing. This album solidified Eminem as one of the best rappers. He’s doesn’t hold back and his rhymes are fantastic. The beats are well done by Dre. This is a classic rap album. 9.0/10
In my mind I remember this album to be just as strong as its predecessor. But now listening to it again.. it is still a very good album, but 80 minutes is at least 20 minutes too many. I would probably go for Slim Shady again.
It was an improvement on the Slim Shady LP with some good moments, but still disliked most of it.

Stan is haunting and The Real Slim Shady is a classic. The rest don't even matter - those make it lights out.
There's no denying the talent here, but the mix of gleeful horror core and whiny self absorption gets old across a whole album with nothing to lighten the mix.
Though never a fan of violent content or style of singing, this album, surprisingly, did not bother me too much, music-wise. At least it's not a noisy one. And Stan is surely a classic by now, not to mention it has endorsement from Sir Elton...
Eminem's edginess, certainly, feels dated nowadays. But back when this album came out, it was still riding the line of being pop while saying things you couldn't fathom other artists at his level of popularity saying. His abilities can't be understated either. He's undeniably a great rapper, but the shit he's usually rhyming about is of little to no interest to me. Not something I need to visit often or really infrequently for that matter. This album certainly takes me back to a place in time, though...this album gets a high 2, so I guess I'll round up to a 3...
Some of these songs were omni-present when I was in high school. Used to carpool with a guy to school that was a big fan of this music and I think he had a burned CD with some of these tracks (along with OutKast's Stankonia and Dre's Chronic II) that was on a constant loop. So this brings back some memories... But having said that I was never much of an Eminem fan and much of this album has really not aged well. While I have to give him credit for being pretty funny a few tracks (The Real Slim Shady)... much of it is overwrought (Stan, Marshal Mathers) and (as usual with the genre) the homophobia and misogyny is a problem. He's also kind of obsessed with the pop landscape of the time (Britney Spears and the like, boy bands, etc) and that all seems so dated now. Also, like a lot of records from this time period, it's way too long (1 hr 12 min). Not even Snoop can save this one in the end. Kind of a fun memory trip, some clever/funny lyrics, but it doesn't really hold up (even compared with other records in this genre from the same time).

Some of the hits, overall kind of weird to listen to in the modern era
Eminem's flow and his hooks are the stuff of legend. I also appreciate his "lil' stinker" vibe, and the fact that he is intentionally a provocateur... But also some of those lyrics are HARD to listen to
The music itself is alright. I like that he doesn't hide his lyrics and voice behind a ton of noise and production. That said, the lyrics about rape, killing children, and homophobic slurs might have turned me off this one...

Just an all time great hip hop album
Good album but super homophobic and misogynist - something that feels rather aged in the post-me-too era. But damn that was a trip down memory lane in the early 2000s - I didn’t listen to this album back then but it’s just a perfect snapshot of that particular time. Which is why it’s an album one must listen to- and probably not love. It’s a tough one man’s screwed up thought roller coaster that has no place 20 years after it was released but at the same time it’s a perfect Time Capsule. It’s a pendulum swing between brilliant and horrible.

This was never really my jam. And Eminem was basically playing to my exist age group. But the angst and anger never really resonated with me. However some great singles and writing, undeniable talent.
I honestly don't know that I listened to the album versions of a lot of these songs, or heard some of them before at all even. Album is still pretty good despite the JV of it sometimes
real conflicted because I like a couple of songs and I have a lot of nostalgia for it, but this album aged like milk. Went in expecting to like revisiting it but the majority of the songs left me physically cringing

One for the headphones....
Eminem, for all his notoriety, was THE rapper for white dudes in the early 2000s. He was up there with 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, and Jay-Z, and he was WHITE. I can't understate the race thing; in a genre built and dominated by black guys, Marshall Bruce Mathers III was this hardcore white guy who seemingly gave no fucks. Even years later, he's left an imprint on internet culture with the song "Stan" taking on new meaning. Dr. Dre is on production here so you know it's gonna be good. Eminem's lyrics are pretty hardcore for the sake of being edgy. I think at this point he knew his audience wanted shocking so he gave them lyrics that would scare parents, the same thing that worked for N.W.A. Only two reservations are the album length and the extent that Eminem is trying to be edgy. So by the time you hit the 11th track he's spewing homophobic shit and it's not even cool or funny, it just sucks. That's not trying to hold him accountable or anything, I just don't care much for the content. It didn't age poorly or like fine wine. The Marshall Mathers LP aged okay.
14th October 2021 Listened throughout the day while working before going to see Barnett after he got engaged and he asked me to be his best man! I remember stealing away to listen to my brother's mini disk of this album and it's still as visceral an experience now as it was back then.
Really not interested in his "ironic" misogyny and homophobia. I'm not shocked, just bored, because I'm an adult not 14.
I remember trying to like this album when it came out. There were some catchy songs but the content of those songs made the album unlistenable.

Mathers is a calculating pop phenomenon (songs alternate with brief spoken interludes of people commenting on Eminem's attitude, of he having oral sex with two guys, etc, the ultimate form of self-glorification) that viscerally exposes calculating pop phenomena. Its a great album. The swearing, violence, misogyny, etc are a bit off putting and over the top but I am not sure if it would be good without it.
Surprised that I liked this a lot more than expected. Disturbing, misogynistic, homophobic, underbelly themes coupled with dark lyrics and melodic accompaniments. Two songs about murdering women after they are locked in a car trunk? and almost countless references to his and other people’s penises keeps this at a four instead of five stars. Listworthy = 👍
I said the Slim Shady LP deserved to be on the list, but honestly, I feel like this record accomplishes the same thing but better. Like the second season of a show that was good to start, but really found it's groove. Same rage and shock value, but better music.

The Slim Shady LP blowing up so fast and Eminem becoming an overnight celebrity created an opportunity for Eminem on his follow-up album to write an excoriating commentary on society in the guise of a deeply unpleasant cartoonish villain who still managed to make people laugh, daring to ask the question - Who is listening to this violent, mysoginistic filth? And why is it so funny? What the hell is wrong with us? This is Em's masterpiece - the verbal dexterity is phenomenal, the choice of beats almost all perfect, the sample choices brilliant (turning Dido's Thank You into a dark reflection on the dangers of hero workship on Stan is a master stroke), even the guests (mostly) don't disappoint. Not all of it is easy to listen to - Kim is really hardgoing (but if this were a film, the actor would be nominated for an Oscar) - and a couple of tracks fall a little short - Drug Ballad and Amityville are the weakest - but the Kill You / Stan / Who Knew / The Way I Am / The Real Slim Shady sequence shows a rapper at the top of his game with something important - and horrible and hateful and funny - to say.
Not my thing, but he's a seriously creative lyricist.
Eminem was better at that moment, but skits are terrible, instrumentals really boring, and eminem is so hyperactive. Don't care about the lyrics.

Well. As much as I wanted to resist this, it’s a work of absolute magic. Honing everything that was brilliant about Slim Shady and creating this perfect synergy of story, song, and emotion. He’s smart as hell and he scares the living jingo out of me (have I mentioned that yet?). I enjoyed it when it came out but I don’t revisit it very much (aside from Stan) and I don’t think I will much in the future. Just not my particular brand of vodka.
Already convinced it’s a total classic, I figured I’d better do my duty and listen through again so my review can be informed by a recent listen rather than the nitrous of nostalgia. As with The Slim Shady LP, Eminem plays with sounds like few others, but where in that former album he is a little too caught up in his agent-provocateurness and in later years he seems more preoccupied with hitting those densely packed rhymes with machine-like precision, here is Eminem’s perfect marriage of form and content. In each song he revels in playing characters - endless characters: particularly circling back around to the Slim Shady (offensive, gleefully so), Eminem (hostile, back up against the wall, firing back) and Marshall Mathers (introspective, self-effacing) but playing many more cameos in between. Hopping in and out of these roles lends a clarity and sharpness to a still quite long album. It allows playful juxtaposition of track listings (The Way I Am [Eminem, hostile, I won’t be who you want me to] to The Real Slim Shady [Slim Shady, here I am, you want Slim Shady, well here is ALL OF HIM] being a particular highlight). The album only drags when anyone other than Eminem guest stars, perhaps because Em is in such a creative place that he is essentially guest MCing his whole album, but also because the guests take it as licence to do the schtick of obscene and offensive stuff, only without the subtext Em provides of the whole thing being performance. That subtext only works in the context of the whole thing which constantly flips between provocation, meta-awareness of all of this as a show, showing off, gratuitous swearing, comedy skits, world-weary agents, and at the centre of it the question “who is Eminem?”. The album is so effective because it’s essentially a dare to the listener to try and pin it down: a virtuosic catch-me-if-you-can.
i) Words, harmless and powerful ii) The Stan—Kim paradox iii) Heavy metal rap iv) Don’t forget the jokes v) PHSE i) Consider the line, “If this chick was my own mother / I’d still fuck her with no rubber / And cum inside her and have a son and a new brother at the same time / And just say that it ain't mine”. It’s spill your popcorn, last round of ‘Would you rather’, criminally taboo toilet humour. Every teenager in the year 2000 or 2020 gets its dual offensiveness and senselessness. Eminem is faking you out. The people in the line—J-Lo, Eminem, his mum—are real, but the scenario is so detached it’s cartoonish. So far, so Slim Shady LP. But what if it became less detached? What if he said the Columbine shooters got their trench coats and weaponry from his house? Or worse, that given the chance he’d copy them? That’s a very real and raw scenario, not to mention one in which Eminem was implicated as a cultural influence. And yet both our 13 and 33-year-old selves know that just saying those things doesn’t make them true. Then consider the political climate in 2000—and not just the president getting his dick sucked. I’m talking about the ongoing fallout from the failure of the Bretton Woods arrangement. Clinton coming into office promising Big Government/tighter regulation then realising that not even he can control the bankers. Realising all he’s got left to convince people that can is his words. Cue the age of spin. I did not inhale. I did not have sexual relations with that woman. Etc. The age of controlling the story, controlling the headline, controlling the truth. In this context, Eminem saying he’d commit Columbine, or have a child with his mum, becomes as “real” as what you’re asked to believe on a daily basis. ii) After ‘Kill You’, ‘Stan’ is almost an apology. Breathtakingly brutal, honest, and empathic. It’s a three-dimensional portrait of not-Eminem--the guy he could be if he hadn’t made it, if he didn’t have a way of containing the Slim Shady in all of us. After ‘Stan’, almost anything is tolerable, impregnated mums included. After ‘Stan’, you understand Slim, understand the Stan-Sim lineage. So you chuckle at the jokes, abide the fag-baiting, bite your lip in faux-disapproval at the rabble-rousing. And then, when you’re almost at the end, he gives you ‘Kim’. And it ruins everything. He employs all the same devices that made you empathise with Stan—relentlessly linear first-person narrative, direct address, multiple characters, and so much diegetic sound it’s as much radio play as song—and uses them to not only shock you beyond anything that’s come before, but to betray your trust in his humanity, his sanity, his redemption. What’s so brilliant is not only that ‘Stan’ and ‘Kim’ are both Marshall Mathers songs (that is, if you go in for attributing each Eminem song to one of his three personas) but that the Marshall who kills Kim is basically Stan, the guy he made you empathise with earlier. But now there’s no distance, no epistolary framing device to make the murder seem journalistic. It’s just you and a woman-hating murderer. This is the bit that interests me most. Why are we okay with what was essentially the same story in ‘Stan’, but so appalled by it in ‘Kim’? iii) If I was writing the 2000s update to Chuck Eddy’s ‘500 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums in the Universe’, I’d be tempted to include MMLP. A quick comparison with Stankonia (same year of release) tells me that Outkast’s album is probably speedier and louder. But metal’s also about spirit, and MMLP has a heart full of revenge. It also has barkier rapping, actual screaming, and uses its somewhat basic beats like riffs. While it may lack guitars (except on ‘Kim’, the most metallic of all its songs), it’s still clearly built on the blueprint of Licensed to Ill. iv) “If I ever gave a fuck, I'd shave my nuts / Tuck my dick in between my legs and cluck.” v) I learnt more from ‘Drug Ballad’ and ‘Kids’ than I ever did in PHSE. The former is a too-rarely mentioned Eminem masterpiece (“What’s a little spinal fluid between you and a friend?”), the latter the most scandalising of all his provocations: a genuine PSA. The verse about Zack, with his back "like the McDonald's arches", his shoulders "hunched up like he's practicin' yoga", and his friends "laughing at basically nothing except maybe wasting their money" will always haunt me.
3.7 - An MC with unparalleled rhyming and flow. And an artist who’s clearly working through some stuff. “Stan” marks an amazing high as its narrative unfolds like a thriller. Honest and raw in his lampooning of some of the music industry’s more toxic elements, and he doesn’t throw punches when calling out certain executives in particular. In the end though I found all the self-pity, homophobia, and mommy/Kim issues exhausting. For me while I can appreciate his consummate skill as an MC, Eminem remains an artist to enjoy in small doses.
It is truly wild listening to this album in 2021. It’s still a mostly enjoyable listen, but it’s easy to forget just how extreme Eminem was until you listen to this again. He says so much offensive shit that it almost doesn’t matter anymore.
Yes, some of Eminem's best material ever is on this. And I can see how people have a problem with the lyrics and what they say. But you cannot deny the skill in which it is performed. Never been a big fan of the little skits in between songs, so I would very rarely play those.
This one took me back. I listened to it a bunch on a road trip to Florida 20 years ago. I'm not huge on rap but I've always said Eminem is a brilliant lyricist. Here is living proof. The Steve Berman interlude is one I still paraphrase when talking about differences in rap styles. I'd rate the album a 5 if the back half didn't drag a bit. Still, it's a wonder to me how someone like lil Nas X ever came out as gay in the rap world with so much homophobia and false male bravado. Some of the lyrics are instant cringe material. I appreciate how he puts his words and thoughts together even if I disagree with the message.

I have to give this a 4, even though this album was hard for me to listen through, and some songs (Kim jfc) were honestly almost too violent for me. I'm not into the humor or the not-even-close-to-politically-correct landscape, but I have to admit this record is significant.

Sigh, tough one to rate. I'm not a big rap fan, but he has a unique style that I can appreciate. The issue becomes when you start to pay attention to the lyrics. It helps to know the underlying idea - there's "Slim Shady" who is everything that people criticize Eminem for - misogyny, homophobia, violence, etc. But then there's the suggestion that this is all an act. "Stan" is a good example of how people shouldn't take him so seriously (and a real catchy tune). The video is disturbing and really well done (and got me watching Dido's Thank You video, which is also a good video and a catchy tune). This Genesis fan liked the Phil Collins shout-out. But then there's a track like "Who Knew" where he's like who would ever think people would take me seriously and I'd get this big? And isn't the problem with the kids other people's fault, not mine? Still, does that make it any better? The rest of the album proceeds similarly - it's not my fault that y'all can't get the joke and it's only because of my upbringing and you're all terrible too. I'm giving it a 3 because I appreciate the style and wittiness, but I can't give it more because I can't rate an album I'd be embarrassed to be seen listening to anything higher than a 3.

Wow! Brilliant Brilliant stuff. I am not a rap fan. I own one rap album; "It takes a nation of millions..." which Ilisten to every couple of years and try to enjoy, beyond "Don't Believe the Hype". But this is Brilliant. The rhyms and the effortless delivery left me stunned. I will listen to this album in the coming weeks to try to cull as much as I can from it and then move on the The Slim Shady LP which I understand is just as brillliant. Discoveries like this is why I love listening to music and why I am part of this program. My first 5 🌟 album for one that I had never heard previously

I haven't stopped thinking about this album since I listened to it. His talent is absolutely unquestionable but the content is quite confronting. I remember hearing this album when it came out and while I realise all the bigotry and homophobia is part of the act, it is hard to digest at points, Kim being the biggest challenge. I can't even imagine what it would've been like recording that song. The music is amazing tho and when he gets on a roll you can't help but be amazed. The tracks featuring other artists really show how good he is as his verses wipe the floor with the others. I was gonna give this 4 stars but the fact it hasn't left my mind for 3 days means it's probably worth top marks.

Just began and I can't go on because I am stuck listening to Stan. The chorus is incredible, oh my god. I wish Nicki Minaj would take this album as inspiration when she makes her next one... Sonically though. I cannot stand the homophobia of this record. I sit sometimes satirical? Yes. Is it all to push an image he can only portray because of his privilege? Yes. Is it good? No.
I acknowledge how insanely talented Eminem is, and I love a few of his songs, but a whole album is tough to get through. Especially in songs where he murders his wife.
I have heard a few Eminem songs over the years, and with the exception of "Lose Yourself," a song I like (great beat, cool guitar riff, and good lyrics), I was never interested in listening to his music. I just listened to this album and came to the same conclusion. There's a whole lot of "I don't give a ***" being vocalized, and no matter the source, I find that self-proclamation of individualism to be amongst the more boring messages, artistic or otherwise, one can utter. That, and musically and content-wise, this album does very little for me.

The sign of a great album is how well it stands the test of time. How relevant the sound compared to current music. This album definitely sounds relevant nearly 20yrs later. Sure the lyrics still sound crass with unneeded language which does come across a little more cringy today but the sound is right on and it flows just as well as ever.

If this album was any less good, any less influential, any less *anything*, it could be written off as a product of an era destined to remain there forever as a forgotten time capsule. But this is so much of everything that it's impossible to look away. This is the album that sold 21 million copies and turned Eminem into a global superstar. It's a pure demonstration of Em's lyrical abilities, technical skill, and - yes - his humor. If you can get past its transgressive attitude and offensive content, it's truly a gift to put on the MMLP and be able to experience the master at work.
Amazing album and one I need to get back to more often.
I really love the music Eminem makes, and this is no exception. It’s not something I’d listen to casually, except for a couple tracks. It’s also SO angry as to seem facetious and silly at times. I can’t tell if that was intentional.
So many solid tracks. Takes me back. Hard to listen to, with how violent and misogynistic and homophobic it is, though.

This album makes me cringe. It’s clearly hyper-edgy to sell. The rhymes and beats are fantastic, Dre and Em are masters of this genre. But the content is too brutal. Sorry, cannot relate...

I had recently listen to this one from beginning to end haha, so I skipped a few tracks. The nostalgia is strong with this one.
Interesting. First time I've listened to an entire Eminem album. I have enjoyed a couple of his songs in the past including 8 Mile movie. However, this was a bit harsh.
