Good but i DNF'd
Good album. Classic Cure.
Not bad. Surprised by the sound quality from 1959 but inwasnt blown away musically.
It's alright, not the craziest. Some great songs, but as a whole, it's alright
Best Song: Love Song The Cure still suck. Looking at the reviews, it seems people either love it and give it a 5 or hate it and give it a 1. I am in the middle, if I hear this I'm not grabbing a belt and looking for the nearest means to hang myself, but I am also not reaching to turn it up either. 3/5 and that is being generous.
The good songs are in the first half of the album. The others are fine, although I couldn’t remember any of them five minutes later. Ethereal rock at its finest? Rounding down.
I know this is a cool record, and I reeeeally loved seeing them live last year (they were fucking amazing), but I was NOT in the mood for this album today. I mostly don’t listen to the Cure unless I get a wild hair, but it felt like goth AIC: super dirgy and almost… like heroin. This album kind of sounds like heroin feels. But not the good part. The desperation, the sickness, the rubber morality. Too dark for my taste at the moment.
I’m sorry, but I was kind of bored by this…
Later Cure, good. Bit of variety and interest enjoyed.
Instrument focused. Mellow sounding
It's The Cure. I am very happy that they exist, and I do enjoy a lot of their more jaunty numbers, but this got a bit 'heavy' after a few tracks. maybe I just wasn't in the mood. I would not put this among their best. For lighter touches I prefer their debut, and for the darker stuff A Forest / Seventeen Seconds and Pornography deliver more. Pictures Of You is a lovely song, though.
Definitely a very consistent album across its runtime. The first time I heard Plainsong it blew my mind. The explosive energy and the yearning in the singer’s voice really got me. The first four songs were really strong for me, but once I realized that the rest of the songs had the same mood with the same synths and the same lumbering and longing feel to it, it started to lose me halfway through. I think anybody who likes a couple of these songs will end up enjoying the rest of the album, but I just don’t think this listen was for me. I think if I listened to them separately like I did with Plainsong and Lovesong, then I’d have more of an appreciation for it. I do also think I could warm up to this album, but this is just my initial thoughts. The production was beautiful though.
scho zweimol live gseh nonie es album glost. wird ziit hä. ussert hemmer schomol eis gha? weisnöd. plainsong no cool so sehr tonal aber irgendwie au dark mit de synths. ah moll s album pornography hemmer glaub mol gha. pictures of you goht afoch wiiter vom letste song. es isch alles so dark hä. aso ihm isch nöd guet gange und er het au nöd wölle dass em guet goht? last dance irgendwie sehr cool. sehr melancholisch. lullaby suuuper snare. fascination street goht au kinda hard. coole bass drums sind riesig. aber s wirkt scho au mega so als het de robert unbedingt müese öpis deeps mache. same deep water as you sehr unterwasser goth jo. gsehni. disintegration easy groovy oyeh. geile beat schös riff. de song disintegration het au no öpis, irgendwie coole klangteppich. he laaangi langi songs. und find etz wos fertig isch dases i sache hooks scho sehr dünn isch eigentli. es 3 gits well mega vorriter.
The instrumental is a high 3, vocals are a low 3.
The hits were hitting, the rest not so much.
The hits are solid pop tunes. The intermediate songs were a mixed bag where I think if I was putting this album on because I was in that mood, they'd be great, but I wasn't totally into them at the time. Still rounds out to a 3.
some classics but overall quite underwhelming
6/10
The buildups were crazy i really liked the same deep water as you and disintegration
Sweet beats. Do not like the vocals
Not my cup of tea.
I’m not in the greatest headspace today, but this just doesn’t speak to me. I’ve never gone deep into the Cure, because I just do not connect to the songs I’ve heard (the popular ones). I guess the Cure isn’t technically “shoegaze,” but it sounds a lot like it to me, and I fucking hate shoegaze.
yeah it's okay. way too long
sin más. soso
not for me
3.2
It was on Houmous & Chutneys Japanese Tour ‘Hows That For You?’ In 1981 when Robert Smith asked us how we managed to stay so positive with such universal popularity. He really couldn’t ever understand it. But for both me and Len it had been a lifelong problem. We never knew any different. One of the curses of being child prodigy’s I guess? 3.2 11/12 Homesick
It sounds more modern than the release date and has an incredible sound, with an amazing atmosphere. But it just has no hits and goes on far too long out staying its welcome becoming tiresome this just lowers the score for me.
So the music is alright but it's just a bit meh. It's nice leaving it in the background while you're doing stuff because it's very chill but it's just not exciting whenever you properly focus on it. I only knew Lovesong and that was nice but the rest were just meh.
My first time listening to this band! I like how cohesive the album is and how signature the style. 6.5/10
Gloomy and boring
Good background music if you're in an 80s mood 🙂
Seems pretty good. I know absolutely nothing about The Cure.
I loved so many moments of this album, and the sound that The Cure keep consistent throughout it. I would say that it was a bit ponderous at times, and that Robert Smith's vocal tone started to wear on me. Nevertheless, about 5 tracks made it onto my "1001 albums best-of" playlist so pretty tough to give it less than 3/5. Oh, and "Lullaby" fucks.
Super long and feels like a chore
Good but not my speed
1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die: 11/1001 I've listened to this album numerous times and I keep coming to a similar conclusion - it's the perfect example of something that has all the parts of an objectively good album, but tied together, it's not an album I personally connect with. As I listened to Disintegration, there was no doubt in my mind how rock solid this album is from a prdouction standpoint, but it failed to find me. The production is sound, it's layered perfectly, it's lyrics are deep yet not overly complex, the cohesion is spot on, and the instrumentation is well thought out and hooky. Though at the same time, I find the length carries too long with the singing a secondary component often starting too late or ending too early, its so cohesive it's almost repetitive despite the unique builds from each song, and the instrumentation is great but nothing I haven't heard before. None of these are problems on their own, perse, but as it all ties together, these compounding problems leave me disinterested in the album overall. It's like The Cure found exactly how to make a good album, and then followed and stretched the code beyond its function. The synth and strings carry the sound for me as the drum beat maintains the same rhythmic roll throughout. Robert Smith has range to hit the various tones portrayed throughout this melancholy album, but nothing that made it exceptionally strong overall despite the atmospherically haunting effect he prescribes. Ultimately, it ends up seeming overindulgent and a bit self-serving as this pattern repeats. The peaks still captivate me, there are lyrics that appeal to me, there's meaning that's not lost on me. Though much of that is lost through an unchanging, depressed tempo that loses me before another part can hook me, creating a mostly lukewarm album. It's a perfectly produced album, but the content within is just kind of meh. (It does sound better the louder you play it!) Podium: 1. Pictures of You 2. Lullaby 3. Lovesong Honorable Mention: Disintegration I can't deny the album's strengths (production quality), but I also don't view it as a pretentious attempt to elevate music (sonically) and it doesn't land as a result. It leaves me questioning what makes this album in particular worthy of being considered one of the best albums. I can't quite pin why this album isn't better than the sum of all of its parts, but with each part having standout features, the way it all comes together just doesn't appeal to me personally. Whether it's too drawn out or not versatile enough, I'm not someone who will just listen to an album because the people producing it produced it well. It'd be like watching a movie with a terrible plot but great cinematography. Disintegration is dark with emotional resonance. The drawn-out instrumentation do add to the cohesion presented throughout. Yet it fails to be captivating just by pure repetitiveness and absence of anything unique, I would expect of a five-star album. Perhaps it comes down to just not being my style despite the greatness I do hear, but it's ultimately for these reasons I give Disintegration by The Cure 3.5 /5 stars.
Their eighth album. Gothic Rock / New Wave. Plainsong, the opening track is very much like Atmosphere by Joy Division. I get that vibe from it. Disintegration is a moody, atmospheric and introspective Goth Rock album. Pictures Of You accompanies the opening song brilliantly. Each track washes over you like a wave seamlessly. Great production. It does get a little bloated, some tracks are unnecessarily long. The Same Deep Water As You is nine minutes.
Cover 7 Good but several songs sound similar / bleed into another. A great dark anthem though.
I had high expectations and for some reason they were not met, perhaps the long intros?
Now this is what I call a dragon album. Because it really, really drags on. That back half, hoo boy, what a slog.
Lullaby is fine, Homesick has it's moments, Untitled is okay. Same problem with having some dated vocals and synthy stuff but enough of it is passable for a three
Fairly generic album but not bad background noise
This album was really popular with the drug crowd back in the day. I'm listening to it on a rainy Sunday morning, which seems suitable. Great music but a little bit too much of a downer for me. 5/5 for the compositions, 1/5 for its influence (negative) on so many people I knew. 3/5 overall.
3.5
Decent
I was a metalhead in the 80s but had some Cure and Depeche Mode cassettes around to help me talk with the the goth girls. This album finds The Cure reaching for a commercial audience. But there are some classic 80s tunes on here, especially Lullaby. #120
It was a decent album that really encompassed a good end of an era. The vibes were very 80s but it was clear we were moving into the soft rock 90s era
3.5 really - great, classic Cure
It’s The Cure so you know what you’re getting going into it. It’s not bad, I think I like this one a touch more than the other album we reviewed by them. I knew a handful of the songs, the others were if not familiar felt like they meshed with the songs that are more familiar to me. Pretty standard 3 stars, good enough, not great.
Good album, easily best suited to a rainy afternoon or evening, but I'd be willing to go back to get more in depth with this one. 3.5 rounded down to 3 for now. Feels like an album that needs repeated listening to really explore it.
Not a bad album at all, it definitely has a mood and sticks to it.
Pretty good
The Cure always has a difficult spot for me. I dont dislike the music per se, but it also is not a vibe I dig normally. The lack of enthusiasm and power for the voice just makes it so undesirable for me to listen to. This album has some great songs, such as lullaby. The instruments are great, but just the singer is the dealbreaker for me.
I did it
It sounds good in a lot of ways, and it kinda drags on. Overall a good album.
Classsic
Not far into this album and it feels very much like they are a band that feel the listener should do some work before they ate rewarded with songs. Unnecessarily long intros mean by the time the song proper starts I’ve already slighted turned off. With the exception of Lovesong their slavish dedication to intros well over a minute mean i can only assume Robert Smith has a weak bladder and songs are all arranged in a manner they can be easily extended to enable his relief before the vocals come in. That said, the songs are generally pleasant enough to listen to and whilst nothing really grabbed me and demanded my attention it is a reasonably solid album. Oh for the want of a strong producer to rein those unnecessarily long intros into line.
The first few tracks of this had me nervous. Yes it was moody and brooding, but was all a bit samey. But then I got Lovesong, Lullaby and Fascination Street pretty close together and things perked up. My big complaint, as someone who thinks that most tracks benefit from being max 4 minutes long and who likes Robert Smith's voice, is that you could cut out a lot of the noodling and let Mr Smith sing his little heart out. I can understand how Cure fans think this is a masterpiece, because it's likely giving them a lot of what they enjoy, but for me its just fine. 3/5
Was cool. Might have to give it a relisten at some point
Thematically solid.
I get the appeal and once upon a time I think I would have enjoyed this but I kind of now just find it all mopey and droney. Definitely some beautiful synth backdrops but I'm just not a big fan of Smith's vocals. I did particularly enjoy The Same Deep Water as You and Homesick (incredible intro but again, I think I'd actually enjoy a fully instrumental version of the song more)
Solid synth-pop songs.
i lik eit
Pretty good, but I’m not a fan of long instrumental sections and it was pretty depressing. I liked love song a lot.
Best summary to give this album is background music. Long instrumentals without any real highlights, lyrics that don't stick. Below average but not bad enough for a rating of 2.
Nice and moody.
Ok. Love song is good. Might re-listen.
the last 4 songs take 31 minutes need I say more
This album made me realize how many Cure songs I already knew. But the other songs I hadn’t heard yet just felt like they went on forever. I didn’t listen to the remasters and demos because even though I did like over half the tracks, I just don’t think I liked them enough to enjoy hearing them 2-3 different ways. solid album but wasn’t as much of an experience for me as others have been.
It’s not for me. I’ve never enjoyed The Cure. Lullaby is interesting. 1001 album worthy: yeah - 83/150
Dull - I wouldn't say this is one of The Cure's stronger efforts.
Thought vocals were annoying but the instrumentals were pretty good. In certain cases they worked pretty good together
What a weird record! I was into other things when this came out but somehow ended up with some kind of cd ep that had Lullaby on it and was absolutely captivated by it. Even still now. How this wasn't the big song off this album escapes me.
Am I goth?
There comes a moment in one's musical journey where you come across an artist or a band that you don't find yourself overtly loving as much as another person or a cluster of people does but you do find a way to respect their talents and capabilities and their audiences' love for that. Well, that's me with The Cure. Disintegration is often regarded as their magnum opus and I can see, hear and understand it but I can only take in so much Gothic inspiration and influence and Disintegration is an overindulgence of the styling. Despite this, there are a number of good to great songs on here and, if one were to take them apart, they'd be solid standalone efforts. Overall, there may come a time where I may connect with this album the way that many others did but, as much as I can respect the effort, now isn't the time. Favorites: Plainsong, Pictures of You, Closedown, Lovesong, Fascination Street, Prayers for Rain, Disintegration, Untitled.
Par ålreite. For det meste litt masete stemme. Klagesang dette eller.
So far, 3 songs in, I’m not impressed. It’s a lot softer than I thought a cure album would be. It’s funny because I complain about it being soft and my choice cut is about love. Strange innit? It seems that the only other interesting song is Lullaby. Everything else sounds the same. Pretty much one long song. You could have this on in the background while you do random things. That would work. And in that note this ends with another “middle of the road” rating from me. Choice cut: Lovesong
It's a good album to listen to for sure, but I don't really care for this one like I do with others. Lullaby is a nice song, but overall the songs feel kind of boring. The album is a bit on the long side as well. I just feel this one doesn't have much interesting to it and it kind of feels like, admittedly pleasant, background noise to me.
Hahaha, I never understood why and what so many people like in this stack of songs dealing with teenage depression.
Like the smiths but not as good. Some cool ideas and melodies but not really for me
Lovesong was my fave. But, I'll be real, their songs go on way too long.
3.5
Better than I anticipated for something that really isn't my kind of thing. Robert Smith's vocal style gets pretty same-y from song to song.
Good but lots of songs sound similar, 3/5
The Cure are an essential band for the post-punk genre that was instrumental in the late 80s and early 90s music scene. Personally, though, I have never been a big fan of post-punk bands. Though The Cure has made many songs I really like, they are kind of like Bob Dylan for me, great song writers but with whom I don't personally vibe with their performances. The standout song from this album is Lovesong which features some nice synthesizer sounds and music.
Plainsong 3.3 Pictures of You 3.4 Closedown 3.4 Lovesong 3.8 Last Dance 3.4 Lullaby 3.3 Fascination Street 3.4 Prayers for Rain 3.5 The Same Deep Water as You 3.3 Disintegration 3 Homesick 3.2 Untitled 3 Score: 3.333333333
First half would've been a 4 but it got worse as it went on
ok. one hit
Rating: 3.5
Very vibey, but it's not something I would go out of my way to listen to.
I need to go back and finish it, didn’t quite get the full-time, but I like the vibe for what it is. A lot of good songs, I’ll give it a relist at some point, not sure if I’ll go back to it all the time though. I think a solid three out of five.
Love the driving beats
3.08
As a fan, I thought this would be better :/
I can see why people really like this album, the music is a step above the other Cure albums we've had. Still not really for me though
Not my genre, but some incredible tracks.
I've never listened to more than a couple of singles by The Cure at a time. yes, they are imaginative, moody, distinct sound, great creative use of instruments, and have depth to lyrics but-listening to the album as a whole, it all blends together & waters the sound down. 3.5 stars
This was a pretty decent album by The Cure, I see why bands like blink 182 and 311 talk about them the way do they do and how they were influenced by them, it was a decent album but I do believe that it was all very similar! Like every song sounded pretty much like the other except for a couple of songs lol I did really enjoy the mood though while I was out walking in the rain to this album definitely enhanced the experience
Liked this quite a bit
Music to play if I owned a vampire nightclub
decent. i enjoy some of the riffs and melodies. i don't like the lead vocals Would I listen again: No Deserves to be on this list: yes 2.7
Underwhelming. It sounds nice but the songs never really go anywhere, and I find the vocals annoying after an hour of listening to them
You get the general idea by about the middle of song 2. It’s a competently performed, influential, genre trailblazer. It is the antithesis of my musical taste and I did not like it one bit. It speaks to its quality however, in that despite this being over an hour long, it did not drag and did not feel a chore to get through.
More kind of boring but acceptable background music
Didn’t like it as much as the last one but still pretty deece
Listened a couple times, nothing really stood out either way. Back-to back Cure albums do run together for music i don't particularly recognize. I do like Lovesong
4/10
I don’t think I appreciated the cure until now. While overall not my cup of tea, I enjoyed listening to this and would again in the future. Great lyrics, introspective, moody. Lullaby is a great song.
Ok
Clever and pleasant instrumentation. Lovesong is a brilliant song, and Pictures of You had an enjoyable bass line and melody. Fascination Street has a great, punchy bass line and nice overlapping synths during the bridge.
super dark and mopey album which some really dark lyricism that isn't necessarily the most exciting thing i've ever heard but i see it's influence, especially into the more synth-heavy rock of today.
Great for late night driving, but a little too long—it was the only album I could listen to driving back from Amherst. I liked it, but I wasn’t impressed.
Good but very samey
Not hugely keen on this even though I think I listened to it in the ideal situation (walking by myself on a dark night). Far from terrible though Specific rating- 3.5 Fav song- disintegration Least fav- untitled
Very atmospheric, Very cure. My favs on this one are Plainsong, Lovesong and The Same Deep Water As You. The songs are prettyyyy long sometimes but still enjoyable.
im so derpessed ugh awugh aowoo aghh
Much better than I was expecting - but would be in 2nd half of the 1001 for me I did not really appreciate The Cure at the time but the sound has improved in my mind.
7/10
Some good writing but very depressing didn't mind it though
A doom-laden 3
Just ok. Sounds like he’s crying the lyrics.
Just solid track after solid track. Good job Cure
Not my typical cup of tea but not unenjoyable. Some cool stuff going on but overall not a huge fan of the Cure so meh
Iconic. I like Cocteau twins better though.
didn’t dislike but nothing stuck out. fluttery, grainy, british
It is a great album because of the hits we know, but it’s too damn boring to listen long and repetitive instrumental fragments making songs that can last 4 minutes in songs that are 10 minutes long.
3/5 okay, wouldn't buy on vinyl but wouldn't be mad if someone got it for me
Rock, 1989 -> 3
This is my second album generated from The Cure in the past five days. I didn't like this one as much. It's Gothic Rock, very somber, and can be a bit of a dreary marathon. Favorite Track: "Closedown".
Brabo
Gothic Rock, mir etwas zu dunkel - wie in alten SKA-Zeiten. Schwarze Lippen, grüne Haar .....
Bit slow and low. Great single in there
It's a classic but I am not a huge fan
Still a big fan of Robert Smith personally, but I dare say I only like The Cure when they’re at the poppiest. Enjoyed some of this, won’t play it again.
Great album
I have some affection for The Cure but I'll never need a full album of The Cure at one time.
there’s something instructive about the way the cure became famous just at the point when they became less interesting
Interested to see what this album sounds like. Lots of respect for this band just not a fan of this type of music.
Cool vibe to it and enjoyable to listen to
I love that The Cure went back to being heavy. The Cure have a unique sound. The downtuned bass drone, echoey tomtom-driven drums, melodic minor key single note guitar picking, Robert Smith's sort of moaning vocals. Moody. Definitely goth. Maybe, for me, a little too introspective, a little too hopeless, too backward looking. Nice job doing that, though! Again, bring me the serious heaviness with a bit less moping. The hookier tunes are the best on here. Sorry Robert Smith didn't like being popular, The Cure's popular stuff is better. "Pictures of You,' "Lovesong," "Lullaby," and "Fascination Street" raise all the other ships, not to say all the others would sink the album. Bit of a downer.
I’ve never been a big fan of The Cure but this album is nice musically. A little bit of a downer but still decent.
as a true Morrissey girl i can’t stand Smith’s whining, whimpering and howling. like for real. still the music sounds cool and strong (thank goodness for long interludes without Smith). BUT “lullaby” song is super cool altogether. 5/5
Singles like lovesong are pretty good but most of the album is gloomy filler with Robert Smith whining about turning 30. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, but I can't listen to it with a straight face.
Solid album.
Would have been a four if the longer songs earned their length
Disintegration is another album which doesn't really go above and beyond but is still a pretty solid album. The album never really did anything that i wasn't expecting from an album like this but it still managed to do it well. The songs (especially towards the end) all had a very relaxing and hypnotic feel to them with many elements contributing to this feel which i quite like. The album however, is very samey which can cause it to get a little bit repetitive but the sound of the songs that generally was playing was still always good sounding so it wasn't something i was too angry about. This album is a decent one, I don't love it but i absolutely don't hate it either. Best Song: Last Dance Worst Song: Untitled
The music is not bad and the vocalist not entirely annoying, but his whine is occasionally reminiscent of RadioHead - rather irritating.
Kinda meh, 2 is too low, 3 is too high. 2.75?
Everyone loves this so much that I feel bad not loving it. I strongly like much of it, though. Way better than the last Cure album I got. I wonder if I will come back and give this a higher rating after a few more listens.
I know people love this one, but I found it a bit of a slog. I seem to give all of their albums a 3, but I'd give The Love Cats at least a 4. Too bad they didn't put it on an album.
lots of instrumentals
I was puzzled by the choice of this album, given that it seems like the tail end of the Cure's career (it clearly wasn't, even before they were reborn with a album in 2024, but I think of them as an 80's band). Though after listening to the full disc, I have to say its a decent choice. Its much more polished than their early work, and Smith's voice and guitar are crisp. That said, I prefer the early discs, which had more of a Joy Division feel.
I don't care for this band but the album was better than I expected. At least it was more guitar rather than synth driven. Still, I can't get past Smith's whiny voice.
The Cure was never my personal favorite... but they sure do have a classic sound from that era that I appreciate.
...
I’m not a huge cure fan, but have always been fond of their stuff. Saw them live as well. Put on a great show.
A little meandery, but not bad.
Good working music - some songs I recognised.6/10
I could never be a superfan of the cure bc of their dark, heavy ambience, but I can definitely appreciate the unique style shining through in this album. If anything stands out the most in their work for me, it’s the lyrics. It’s someone’s heart bleeding out on a plate in front of you, and I feel it strongly in “pictures of you” and “homesick”. Solid album for wallowing in bed waiting for them to text back! 👍
I liked the sound and I always appreciate a unique style and point of view. But it really dragged on for the last few songs
Meh. A very long album.
I enjoyed this album a little less compared to the previous ones. Still a good album tho! I would give it 3.5 stars if I could Best song: Lovesong
I liked it :) in a haze of super strong cough medicine
I liked it! Some really interesting sounds on here but it just didn't make that big of an impression. Perhaps I'll revisit soon
I admittedly don't have a super deep knowledge of The Cure's discography, and I think this was my first time listening to one of their albums straight through. You can definitely hear a lot of 2000s synth-driven pop presaged here, combined with a lot of decidedly 80s choices (especially in the gated reverb drums, and kind of strange vocal delivery). A lot of the songs here strike me as kind of patient explorations of the moods and shapes created by the short chord loops that permeate all of these songs, at their best (as in lovesong and prayers for rain) this can means a lot of interesting non-chord tones and dissonances explored against the shimmering echoey textures. At its worst this leads to songs like Pictures of You where the first 6 minutes is a snoozer vamp between the I and IV chords, with only the pleading prose (which is admittedly quite lovely and moving) to really give much shape or direction to the proceedings. I'm admittedly a harder sell on music that requires a strong engagement with text as one of the primary factors to making it work, and a lot of what makes this album feel like it doesn't quite hit me as hard as it could is related to that. For this to work as an *album* I feel like I need more shape or direction in the song to song textual material and overall tonalities of the music. The sixth song in a row written as a first person recollection of remembered comforts of lost love and it feels less impactful for the lack of real stylistic flexibility in how it communicates in the literal lyrics and from the fact that it's yet another midtempo reverb-drenched ballad with the same modes of interacting with said text. There are, of course, great standouts on this album. Even if it's not breaking any bold new ground in terms of harmonic construction, Lullaby is a great thematic departure from its surrounding moments (and I love how discordant the horrifying lyrics and hushed creepy vocal delivery are from the bouncy assured backing music). The propulsive toms work in Closedown is great, and I loved that the song chose to close on this ambiguous chord without any real resolution to it (making me wish the following song was more of a contrast/response to it). There are a lot of really committed vocal performances here that are almost load-bearing on their own, too ("Disintegration" doesn't need to be half as long as it is, but I love the conviction). I think this'll be an album I have to revisit in the future with fresh ears, there are definitely cool melodic elements sprinkled throughout here that I'm sure my ears were too tired to appreciate fully (especially some of the lovely bass playing operating as a rich counterpoint toward the end of the album). For now though, doesn't rise much beyond "eh, it's fine" for me.
I've only listened to 2 songs by The Cure before listening to this (Just Like Heaven, Friday I'm in Love), but I'm a big fan of all the synth & instrumentals so far! not as big of a fan of Robert Smith's vocals, but I'm just picky w/ singer vocals, and they didn't bother me as much the longer the album went on. the back half of the album kind of drags, but overall a pretty good album! I'd put it on in the background while working but prob won't try actively listening in full again. 3.5/5 rounded down to 3/5
Dosta dobro, iako su mi neki singlovi izvan ovoga albuma draži nego pjesme sa slušanog
Pictures of you is one of my favorite songs of all time, and I love the Cure overall. But this album kind of drones on and on. It's not bad, but as a whole it's nothing spectacular.
Decent but not my cup of tea
3, goths. Favorite songs: love song, disintegration and pictures of you
Was nice sounding, but so many of the songs are way way too long
Lyrics: 3/5 Music: 3/5 Production: 3/5 Cohesiveness: 3/5 Overall: 3/5 Stand out songs: Pictures of you Love song Lullaby The different rythmns between the guitars bass and synths are amazing. They all sit well in their own space in the mix and blend around each other so well. Some parts seem drawn out but at the same time I like the slow build up of the songs and the space and atmosphere created. However after many long songs it does get quite slightly boring. I am however reminded of my belief that the Cures only good album is their greatest hits album. There’s a lot of meh in amongst the great Lullaby is an incredible song.
C’est long
It starts off very nice, but it is all a bit samey. Not bad by any stretch, but that’s it.
A decent group that seemed dedicated to producing largely non-objectionable music. Their sound is definitely memorable, though very few individual songs are.
No puedo empatizar fácilmente con la propuesta de White, Cure me trae en constante lucha interna, pero su propuesta no deja de ser interesante
Not bad, not spectacular, but definitely important.
Not as bad as I thought it would be considering how much the Cure annoy me, but still not great
smá spooky vibes i like it, soldið 80s, sum lögin alveg geggjuð en sum soldið langdregin að mínu mati Heildar rating 7/10 held ég bara
Approaches but doesn't succumb to 80s overly dramatic self-importance. While I can appreciate the vocals, I like more the rhythmic droning. Hard to tell one song from the next, but that's a mostly good thing. 5, 6, 7, 8, (9!) minute songs helps. Okay so yeah there is some aimless wanderings but the overall aesthetic holds.
Recognized some of the songs, which was kind of nice, but overall this album turned out to be a little bit boring.
I don’t know, man. I remember the girls in 8th grade that were listening to this while I was bumping NWA and Public Enemy. A couple of tracks stood out for me — Pictures of You and Fascination Street. Glad to finally give these guys a gig listen, but must admit that I was down a rabbit hole, learning about Ian Curtis and Joy Division, while this (and Lakers/Grizzles with the sound off) played in the background. Oh and “discovered” that Lips Like Sugar was Echo & the Bunnymen. Was aware of the band, but didn’t know any of their stuff. Knew of the song but didn’t know the artist. All in all, an educational evening.
Fine. Left no impression
This is a really dodgy one for me. They are a band I have wanted to listen to more of for a long time. Close to me is a brilliant track. Unfortunately it's not on here. There are some really good bits to this, but somehow it just doesn't float my boat. It doesn't do it for me. But still worth a 3. Just imagine what it would have got if it did work for me.
Album was all right
Does the carpet match the drapes? Nay. Came in expecting emo rock, instead received emU2. Really liked the sound, almost like a mix between Cocteau Twins and U2. Did drag on too damn long though, felt like it had already been an hour by the 5th song, and then it actually went on for an hour. Still kinda fire, albeit extremely repetitive
first album lets go!!! start of the album is very chill and mellow - pictures of you is such a delightful song, it feels meaty (vocals are beaut) and properly down to earth - really really nice loving the buildup of drums and synth in closedown as someone whos listened to basically only the cures best hits, this is great. lovesong is already a song i loveee, you make me feel like i am whole again. AAH oops i deleted half the review i think i said i love rain sounds at the start and end of one of the songs, along with it feeling a bit bland up until song 7/8 as it felt repetative. adoring disintegration as a song though, its quite fun, the vocals feel like the singer is almost pleading to be heard, ive not really listened to the lyrics but the vibe is vv good. i cant pick out any songs that really stand out to me because there seems to be a single constant vibe, but its a good vibe!! i did enjoy it. no negative comments, but also no overwhelmingly positive ones
One hit among mediocrity. Music is good but kind of goes nowhere. Would benefit from a better vocalist. Overall not bad
Good music, it changes my routine, a sad album 3,5/5
Not a bad album. Never really explored The Cure, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. And to be honest, I think I set the bar low when preparing for the listen. Not a happy listen, which I anticipated, but I enjoyed the music for a large portion of the album. Plenty of textures throughout the music with the use of keys, synths and guitar effects. Robert Smith’s vocals are not my favorite, but it’s not the worst. Fascination Street was added to my liked list, so that’s something.
Feel like I'm missing something? This is pretty boring. This is my least favorite type of 80s production. Some of the songs are ok.
Ya' know... it's the Cure. Not unlike your goth phase, it sticks around a little longer than it should.
Ethereal emo 3.5*
The Cure are from a town I went to very regularly when I lived in England. That's fun. Generally speaking, the gloomy introspective ambient instrumentals don't really do it for me. However, I did like a lot of the music on this album. "Last Dance" had some cool guitar sounds. They're doing a lot of stuff with pedals in this record. "Lovesong" is the song I recognize. I like a lot about it, and about the album in general, but I have a hard time getting into the singing style. "Lullaby" is cool, I like the instrumental sections a lot. "Fascination Street" is also cool. I am enjoying this section of the album with less singing a lot more. "Prayers of Rain" also has cool instrumental. I feel like I'd like a vocal-free version of this album. The vocals are a little droning and get old quickly for me. The album is depressing, in a way that is more often tedious than interesting. I like the instrumentals in a lot of places, but I always tune out when the singing starts again. 6/10
Cool album, didnt listen to it too much, will listen more. Not many lyrics thi
not quite my tempo
6.5/10
I dont super get it hm. Hopefully that's what this is for.
Lots of good stuff on here. More atmospheric than I think I realized.
I struggled with this being a two star, but ultimately I chose a three because I actually like the sound of this album. It tends to get a bit repetitive towards the end I think, and the sad lyrics don’t tend to let up… but that’s The Cure for ya. Ultimately I could see myself listening to this again and definitely recognized Lovesong.
I actually really liked this album. It was too long and somewhat repetitive, but the sound was solid. To me that’s the most important thing. If I like something a lot I’m more willing to listen to it for 75 mins. This is a low 4 or a high 3.
I listened to this album once on Friday, and again on Sunday. It’s not bad, but aside from Lovesong not much was all that memorable. Great for background music, but I don’t think I’ll have a strong desire to listen to it again.
3/5 Would def listen to on occasion Fav song: Prayers for Rain
There are some great songs from my teenage years, but I never really understood the draw of The Cure. I never got into the moody subculture that fans seemed to be a part of. I do still like some of their songs, but it doesn't really resonate with me.
3 at best. This was boring AND put me in a bad mood (but I love The Cure prior to 1987) 🙁
Good album. I like the sounds (moody) and it gets a bit heavy in places in a great way. I think it sounds of its time, which is not bad. There are some catchy songs, I really like Prayers for Rain, Fascination Street, and Lullaby. Also like his voice. I would listen again, but I probably wouldn't seek it out to listen to. I think it was a bit too long as I got bored towards the end. And, it didn't really resonate on a deep level with me, like the songs are good and it sounds good, the lyrics are not bad but they don't exactly hit me in a very impactful way, they're just fine. Torn between 3 and 4 stars but I'm rating according to my personal enjoyment, so it has to be a 3.
I guess I’m the odd one out here. It’s ok, I guess. A bit melodramatic, but that’s the Cure’s whole schtick.
Atmospheric, melancholy, with a bit of an edge that you would want from "the" goth band. The album was a little long, but if you appreciate Robert Smith, it has enough variation to not overstay its welcome.
I'm somewhat aware of The Cure and their contributions to post-punk and new wave in the 80s, but it felt many of the tracks on this particular record were the same. Long, droning guitar progressions as the intro, followed by the first of a few introspective verses 1-2 min later. A formula was certainly followed here and the allure isn't as special when there's only a slight variation of it a few minutes later. They certainly nailed the gloomy aesthetic they were setting out for though, I can't deny that. I guess I just don't have the nostalgia everyone on the review board seems to have for this album. I didn't hate it entirely, but there's definitely a specific subset of listeners that would really dig this.
This is sort of fine indie rock, but I really don't care for the singer's voice. It's also really, really 80s. It's alright, but I wouldn't have pulled any of their work out of a lineup.
Pensavo peggio, ma finora nulla di memorabile.
I came around on the Cure in my thirties -- and I feel like I'm kinda backing away now. If there's an instrumental sound that's not aged well -- it's the late 80's "lush synthesizer" which sounded ethereal in 1989, but now just sounds pretty stale. Especially for the long, weepy interludes that the boys throw in throughout. Fun fact: when I was working a Cure show as a tech in college after pulling a near all-nighter the day before, I fell asleep backstage to one of those eternal chords. There are some good tunes here, for sure. The Cure's best work is when they maintain some focus. Fascination Street, Plainsong, Lullaby -- they all work. But what really hit me this time around is just so goddamn creepy Lovesong is. It's like when I understood that "Every Breath You Take" wasn't really a love song. Lovesong evokes a middle-aged man grooming a teenager on the downlow and now I can't get it out of my head. Unexpected banger: The Same Deep Water as You
This was! Good. I don't know how much I personally liked it, but I can appreciate it. He was whiny 3.5 or 4/5?? Can't decide. I think I'm exhausted and that's why I didn't like it as much as I usually would Maybe 3. Idk
Melancholic and symphonic. The Cure represents the 80s in its purest form. The vocals are dreary and the music is wavy. Moments of upbeat rhythms, but this is mostly a very emotional and heartfelt record. I’d revisit it.
This is a band i knew because of their hits, but hits can be deceiving. They were more electric, trippy, sometimes rockier than I expected. In my high school brooding days I probably could have gotten really into it, but today it starts to blend together after a while. Sounds are interesting and different, Prayers for Rain for example had some really interesting melodies and sounds. Vocals overall were interesting and different (compared to other bands) but eventually all sounded the same.
I guess maybe I don’t like The Cure as much as I thought. The hits on this are great, and I enjoyed some of the earlier songs, but this felt like it got worse as it went on. I dunno. The songs are long and drawn out and all start to sound the same. It’s ok.
Eh? Not really my thing, but I get Cure fans, at least. They seem to represent the transition of punk from the early 80's into the pop-punk/emo era. I think I could grow to like them. There's a lot there. This is definitely an album I want to give another listen to in a month or so.
Ganske deprimerende
Zzzzzzzzzz
Too many long, droning tracks. But “pictures of you” is an all-timer. “Lovesong” also rules.
My thesis is been that this album is a shibboleth for genuine Goths. Genuine Goths all LOVE it. People, who just like The Cure a bit (even the early stuff), like me, don't. I think it's okay. I like Lullaby but I also think it's overlong and more than a bit self-indulgent.
My pallet is not configured for the Cure sound
Another fine album by the Cure. Definitely like the way they build their songs, find their lyrics interesting, and they really create some solids hooks.
I don’t think I like the cure that much they have captured a feeling of disintegration however
There are some good songs on here, but goth just ain’t my thing. And I definitely grew out of that broody sad phase by my thirties.
Bit ethereal for pub music, but I can see them playing it later at night when they want people to mellow out a bit.
Decent album.
I can't decide whether I really like this or if I find it grating. I don't think I'm a fan of the vocals. There are definitely aspects of the music that I think are unique and sound quality entering my ear. I think I would enjoy it less if it didn't sound like the whole hand was barely containing a certain type of rage. Standout track: Fascination Street
I'm not sure how to review The Cure. Their sound and feel is ephemeral and unpredictable. Sometimes I miss the point completely. Sometimes it surprises me out of nowhere, like walking through a spiderweb in the forest. I can only respect the poetry and magic the band seems to continue to conjure.
I found it more appealing than I had expected.
I find the cure’s albums to be too long and uneventful. I liked the overall sound but I wouldt listen again. In my opinion the cure owe me a balmy summers evening
It's not bad, but all a little too depressing
3.5, never been a massive fan but a solid enough album
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this album! 3.5
Not my usual genre but there were some interesting songs. Some of them were wayyyyy too long and half the song was instrumental. Not for me but I do think I got something out of this.
It's fine. Some good songs but a bit samey, and we've definitely had more records from The Cure than this list needs. 2.5 stars
Good sounds
Was OK
I’d like to like The Cure, but I just don’t
Classic, gloomy, Curr
That was not what I expected. 3 stars
banger
OG emo
3 stars
Great album
This was a good album. I have only heard their radio songs before this so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed their other work
So 80s, feeling pre-grunge, teenage anxty... definitely enjoyed the beginning of the album after starting call me by your name - made me feel like the lead in a rom com. Bit same after that. 3.25
Pretty decent. 3.8
very sad but very good, i cried. i laughed, but i mostly jizzed.
This feels like an instrumental album with the occasional random lyric thrown in. Why such long intros to each song? The meat of the song is good though as is the instrumentation.
Yeah alright
Getting more into the Cure more over recent years. Not loving an album yet, still a bit of a Greatest Hits band for me, but there is a cohesiveness to a lot of their albums I like.
I found this album to be pretty boring. It's slow and relaxed, but I think that's why it didn't grab me. I think if I want to listen to music like this, I'll probably just fall back on old favorites.
Moody, slow, gothic, one or two to hold onto or to throw on when feeling melancholy sad vibes. Rainy day?
The Cure zzz, aunque pinta buena atmósfera
Plainsong sounds so familiar to me. Was it in a movie? - YES, the fight scene in Ant-Man!
I'm still not a fan, I don't get the appeal. Whiny new wave, not interesting in my opinion. The music is okay but there's not really anything here that grabs my attention.
Not bad, but I didn’t find it super engaging and thought it ran a bit too long.
Very solid album - not as heavy hitting as I would have thought for a "gothic" band. I enjoyed this as a solid listen - would not be going out of my way to listen again.
A master work of dark blue hopelessness and pain. The tempo, tone, and overall message are depressing. Other than that, it’s enjoyable. Lovesong is the only one I remember from when the album came out and it’s the best song of the album. Sadly, only (3.3*s) for this effort. Nice work boys!
Slow burn. The album has some good ones plus mellow groove and beat on the lesser knowns. It lulled at moments but i was overall satisfied. The cover is a bit creepy but makes sense knowing Smith was back on the hallucinogenics. Grab a glass of wine (maybe a few caps) and chill by some glowing embers in that outdoor fire pit and melt away...3.3.
STANDOUTS: Pictures of You Lovesong OVERALL: 3/5
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. In general, I'm not a huge The Cure fan, but this was quite decent.
A little bit flowery and whimsical for me. I could still appreciate the songwriting though.
Not my thing, I’m a bit disappointed because I love their greatest hits collections,.. but that’s not The Cure’s problem
This is supposed to be a classic of the 80s. I never was a big fan.
Though not my taste, I can understand the appeal. I hope that I will be able to better 'connect' with next album......
Pretty good, not something I would usually listen to but overall good album
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Have to be in the right mood for this one. Lovesong and Fascination Street were the highlights for me. Closer to a 3.5 really....I might spin this one up of my own accord someday....when I'm not trying to get through 950 more albums...
Eher ruhiger Rock, ganz schön, aber auch etwas beliebig. Die Lieder bzw. der Sound der Lieder ähnenlich sich z.T. sehr.
They call themselves The Cure and I am still wondering: for which infliction? I think a more fitting name would have been "The Placebo". Not saying it's bad, just that you probably have to project a lot of your own thoughts and experiences into it to rate this one highly. Considering on the overall rating and reviews praising this album, I didn't expect to be this unaffected by it.
Parhaat: Fascination Street, Homesick
The Cure delivered with their signature dreamy synth works that is imo among the epitome not only of mainstream goth but also '80s synth pop. Speaking of '80s synth pop, the vocals sound like it came straight out of it. Annoying whininess and all. At this point, I can conclude that their strong suit is their instrumental stuff.
An amazing listen, fantastic instrumentation, wondrous vocals, way too long for what it is. Perhaps drags out the start of each song a little.
Really enjoyed Plainsong, Pictures of You, and Closedown. If the rest of the album was good as those, this review would be 5 stars. The album is too long and really drags by the end. Having said that, it has made me want to listen to more of The Cure
They definitely are sad lads. Can imagine being well into this if depressed. Not really my kinda thing but it did have some interesting vibes, might see if I can get into them more in the future.
The Cures sound is like the British weather, it's all gray and gloomy, however occasionally there is a ray of sunshine. Unfortunately the sunshine is not on this album. Although gloomy doesn't necessarily mean bad
This album started off strong but didn’t do much beyond its initial impression. It took me on a journey, sure, but it was in 3rd gear the whole way. I wanted to like it but it was just too dull. It’s well done which is what saved it from a 2
3.5 stars
Opzich prima, maar niks bijzonders
Brooding and melancholy. Dark and a bit Gothic. Oddly didn't feel nearly as long as it's run time. Fans of The Cure will love it, most others will recognize the one or two singles that everybody knows.
Decent
An interesting, full psychedelic sound and a pretty decent pace. But the whole thing was just super long-winded, none of those tracks needed to go on as long as they did.
Splits the difference between Seventeen Seconds and Pornography. A few snappy, catchy tunes, with Lullaby standing out as the best song on the album. But also a few overly-echoey, garbled moan-fests that I wanted to skip.
I've always seen this album on best albums of all time lists, but never got around to listening to it. After listening I see why so many people include it in those lists. For me, the instrumentals are incredible throughout with the only drawback being that the vocals are hit or miss depending on the song.
This is the first I've ever really listened to The Cure. I know their reputation as the O.G. emo kids, which made me think I wasn't going to like it, but it's actually pretty good. I can tell the influence they had. Would have been huge for a teen in the day. Gets a little same-y after a while. 3.7
Ive probably listened to it 5-6 times, both actively and in the background the songs go in and out just as fast as they come so I cant give it more than a 3 but I think its really decent, some songs are 5s imo
I liked this way more than I was expecting. I never listened to the Cure because I assumed it was just crybaby cut-yourself-music, but it is so much more than that. I love the production of this album and the 80s feel. I stand corrected!
I was surprised I didn’t know more of those songs. I didn’t realize just how synthesizer, moody they really were. I enjoyed listening to the album, but was underwhelmed. I had a different recollection of what I thought the Cure were at the time. When the Cure sang of angst and love, the songs popped. It was an okay album.
it sounded like it was some sort of lullaby. really weird
Cool but mopey. Cheers up the cure
classic album from The Cure
