Whiney, love song is the only single I’d listen to. A lot of repetitive production. Could cut a minute off each song.

Nothing very special, a bit depressing, and thus boring, but that might be because I'm in the mood for more energetic songs as of now.

I know a lot of Cure fans who consider this their best work. Personally, I’m not a fan. It lacks the intensity of earlier work

Artist radio after this album ended made me realize that I do like The Cure, but moreso their upbeat stuff than this album. Lovesong was really the only standout. 2.5 rounded down because realistically I won’t seek out

For an album called disintergration I found it quite hard to differentiate between a lot of the songs... A lot of repetitive mopiness, just don't think I'm angsty enough to get it. Favourite: Disintegration

Not a lot of lyrics, if I listened more it’d probably be better. The background music is the same between songs but really interesting, wish the songs were shorter.

Aside from a couple of catchy tunes, this is a mess of a record. I just don’t like the lack of melodic content in many tracks, and his vocals aren’t my favorite.

What can I say, I just don’t like the cure. The guy’s voice has always annoyed me, even when I was a teenager and they were huge. Which is weird, because other whiny Brits’ voices don’t annoy me.

I think ultimately, I just don't really understand this. There are some solid moments and things that I enjoy, but it never really clicks for me. It's music, at least. But I don't think it belongs here. Favorite Song(s): Lullaby

Simple, persistent, heavy rhythms. Minimal harmonic progressions. Ethereal keyboard backgrounds. I assume this is what fans are drawn to. This is not a negative appraisal of the music. It's just not for me.

It was fine. The whole album had a decent tone and sound but no individual song jumped out at me.

RANKING: i would not buy a physical copy of this album unless like it waz a really Really fancy vinyl or smth. a 2.75/5 kinda beat. better songs: lovesong, fascination street, the same deep water as you, homesick. biggest complaint: album is way too long to feel this directionless

Ehh, the album is a bit slow and depressing, but what do you expect from The Cure. Love Pictures of You & Love Song, but this one isn’t for me. 2.5 Stars.

72 minutes is an audacious run time for this genre. They could have chopped off 3 songs and made it 60 minutes. A lot of it sounds the same. I dig a lot of the bass. Love Song is a classic and Pictures of You was good. If the previous EWF album was a 3, this can't be a 3. Giving it a 2. Maybe setting the bar high too soon, but we got a long way to go.

Really didn't get the appeal of this, have enjoyed a lot of the Cure's material previously but this album was meandering, hookless and each track was hard to distinguish between with it all being at the same tempo. Maybe I need to be in a very specific mood to appreciate it

I liked the first two tracks but at over an hour in length the album really started to drag towards the end.

I like the textures and sounds in a lot of Cure songs, but have never been on board with Robert Smith’s vocals. This album is too lumbering for me.

Upon it's opening, I was transported to a world of David Lynch and an alternative Twin Peaks-esque universe. So things were looking up, but then I found the sludgy pace, reverb melted drums and the outright dreary nature of it somewhat soul-destroying. Perhaps I should have read the album title more closely. It has cleverly multi-layered moments, Lullaby being the pick of the bunch, but I found it tough going overall.

No too bad for the Cure, there are some good tracks at the start and i've always liked lullaby. Just not my vibe generally though.

Seems like they took inspiration from my G Leonard Cohen in that their music is so fucking boring that I nearly fell asleep.

Ist ja gute Musik aber das Album würde ich mir nie aktiv anhören. Disintegration und Fascination Street haben mir am besten gefallen aber ein Song muss halt gut und enjoyable sein um über 5min lang zu sein und sie sind halt alle so lang und das nicht sehr verdient.

Never understood the love for this band. Kind of groovy, in an 80s way, but...meh?

This album has all the trappings of 80s synth pop/rock. Luscious keyboards? Check. Guitars with copious amount of reverb and delay? Check. This is also the first time I’ve listened to an album by The Cure front to back. “Plainsong” is a terrible song to open a record. Like several of the albums tracks, there’s a lot of “fat” around the edges. There’s periods of those guitars and keyboards droning out for minutes at the time while not varying or developing enough significantly to justify sitting through the 2 minute intros before the vocals start. Often times, the vocals are not up front in the mix, which makes the songs often times difficult to follow. However, sometimes those elements come together nicely. “Lovesong” is one such example and it’s easy to see why it’s one of their most popular/well known tracks. The album does successfully accomplish going for that “anguished” type of vibe as the title would suggest. “Untitled” does prove to be a strong closing track

Everyone alive in the 80s has heard of them, but so what? At the end of the day they’re just another 80s band, producing weird alt rock shit that navel gazing angsty teens listen to, but adults would readily classify them as the one hit wonders they are. All these 80s bands are all either gone or still peddling their worn out crap to squeeze a living out of music. Truly great musicians of the 80s (think Sting for example) continue to produce, innovate and inspire.

My favorite of all The Cure albums I have heard. Although that's not saying much, I'm generally not a fan of theirs. But this was good, the songs are kinda long for my taste, but this album has good energy. I still won't come back to this.

Difficult to enjoy this

Still don’t get the fascination with these lads. Is it because Smith sounds gay, wears lipstick, and dresses like Count Dracula? I get that there are people who like depressingly morbid music, but this is an act, and not worthy of the accolades.

The only saving grace is 'Lullaby' on this album. To each their own, but this band is just not for me.

This one bounced off me big time. I genuinely liked Plainsong, Lovesong and Last Dance. But, every other track was overpowered by the way I was getting sent straight to sleep by the lead vocalist's voice. Favourite track: Last Dance

I almost fell asleep

I'll always respect The Cure for carving out a sound that is somehow both unique and formulaic at the same time. They are able to land pretty firmly in the emo/sadboy realm but still give their songs a rock/poppy edge. Not quite sure how they do it but it works. Not sure I've ever met someone who doesn't like The Cure even if they aren't a big fan. Between their hits they have something for everyone. Credit to them. Disintegration threads the needle much in the same way. It's got a lot of the signature dark depressing nature associated with Robert Smith and The Cure as a whole. A couple hits and some solid deep cuts that keep the album interesting. It's a little long at 70+ minutes and it drags by the end of it with a couple unnecessary long songs in the back half. It would benefit the album to cut 2 songs to tighten it up, Despite this it still held my attention much better than plenty of the long albums seen elsewhere on 1001. All in all a good listen and a worthy album from my end. 3.4 stars

Never was a huge Cure fan. That said, I've actually come to really like their earlier, rawer tunes but the more gothy synthy (signature) stuff I never got that into. Didn't dislike this album in it's entirety but overall, nah.

A monotonous, boring onslaught of melodramatic rock garbage. Song after song of the same arpeggiated, chorus-laden electric guitar and echoing drum beats, with tuneless, whiny singing. It’s not technically bad, but it sure is exhausting. I had to check my phone a couple times to make sure I wasn’t on song repeat; just absolutely no variation, improvements, or change at all. Once a song starts, it takes about 15 seconds for you to know how the rest of the song is going to sound. Uninspired and unremarkable, like the rest of The Cure I’ve heard. There can be no stand out tracks if all track sound identical.

From Art to alternative Rock it feels inconsistent at best.

Still don't get why this album is considered by many to be the Cure's best. Pornography and Seventeen Seconds are far, far better.

The album has high points in Lovesong and Fascination Street but the tracks fail to differentiate themselves or justify their longer than average runtimes. I can imagine that if you are really into this sound, it's fantastic but for my personal taste it's too much of the same.

This is what happens when a working band decides to be deep. That's not really something you can choose to do. The album disappoints in very predictable ways.

Every song (except Lovesong) makes me want to turn it off and listen to one of the earlier Cure albums. I love the Cure. But this album has always sounded like a collection of songs that weren't quite good enough to make the cut for Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, so Robert tried to overcompensate by making the production cleaner and richer. It does sound beautiful. And Lovesong is gorgeous. And that's about it for me.

Ok! I get it! The slow build-up, adding layers, one instrument at a time, it builds tension and atmosphere. It works, but it gets so repetitive. Songs like Prayers For Rain and (especially) Lullaby work. But there are a lot of forgettable tracks.

I quite like the heavy production - it's certainly a far harsher sound than I was expecting from this genre, though something about it fails to land with me. All the tracks blend together and the crooning vocals keep this from being something I'd want to come back to.

First off, cover art is great. I enjoy a few songs off Three Imaginary Boys. Of course there's 10 years between them so I did go in expecting a gloomy, hypnotic mood-show rather than anything resembling a hits record. But this didn't do IT for me on my first listen. At no point did I go "oh man!" It felt like a load of gothic dullness. Will listen again, loud, to really hear the lyrics and try to feel it. Plainsong just started and I get it. I dig Lullaby. I like Prayers for Rain. 2 stars from me. Good.

plainsong. big, flowy, echo. interesting choice for an intro. pictures of you. the cure seems to love chorus/flanger pedals. and really long intros. background/elevator music. closedown. 2 minutes in, song starts. jesus christ. lovesong. a song that actually sounds like a song. a very overrated one at that. last dance. bleh. lullaby. well i do want to fall asleep. fascination street. these are 2-3 minute songs with 2 minutes of fluff intros. what the hell. im already bored with the song before the lyrics start. prayers for the rain. cool melody at least the same deep water as you. intro was only 90 seconds this time. same dramatic montage shitty movie sound. disintegration. 1:45 intro. homesick. at least this one sounds like a proper intro, piano/guitar accompaniment, actually musical instead of ambient noise. nice harmony, drums come in with main riff only about a minute in. best intro so far, albeit still to long. strings come in 90 seconds in, then synth at 1:45. kind of ridiculous, now its absurdly long. lyrics start after 3 minutes. fuck this lol. untitled.

Noise with rhythm, that's the single most basic definition of music I've heard. And this was really close to hitting that definition on the head. I see no good concept here. The music is dull. Maybe this was really just meant to be enjoyed while high? Whatever the case, it was a big miss from me. I'll be perfectly happy if I never hear this album again.

An interesting stroll down sadsack lane couldn't see myself rocking this on a leisurely stroll next to the beach or on a nice winding road trip through the mountains, so I don't know where I would connect with this, maybe a drama movie perhaps.

#16: Um… I don't see what the hype is about this album. Long drawn out instrumental sections made it slow. 116 on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of all time. Favourite track for me was Lullaby.

Fine, didn't grab me

The beginning of the album seemed very promising - I loved how expansive the sound was and there was some good groove to it. But everything kind of started to sound the same by about halfway through and the second half of the record was a real slog for me. I wasn't a huge The Cure fan before this. I have some new appreciation now but mostly I wasn't supremely impressed.

Well, here it is Robert deciding that everything was giving him the shits, and Lol deciding to go and get pissed. And it shows, I bought this back in the day and it was the one that killed it for me as it was the proverbial dog returning to its vomit. There's nothing wrong with it, there are some quite good tunes but seriously they were standing still. Sorry death freaks, if you are looking for something while they hook the horse up to your arm to see you out and you want a bit of gothy doom, go and get 17 Seconds and give this the flick.

I like some stuff by the cure but it gets kinda dull after awhile for me. Always been a bit on the “emo meets new-wavy” side. With that being said, pictures of you and love song are fun songs.

It turns out The Cure for my headache was turning off this album. Some classic cheesy 80s parts, but otherwise got really boring and repetitive as it wore on.

Started off good, but quickly started to lose interest in the album. A lot of the songs sounded the same. I enjoyed the piano, as well as some guitar and bass parts, but I could really do without the singing in almost every song.

I have listened to a few songs by The Cure before, so I was expecting to really enjoy the album. Just felt very uninspired/bored by a lot of this album. Some songs feel way too long, not much variation in general. First two in particular were hard to listen to without wanting to skip. I feel like by the first verse I basically know the entire song, not sure if it's something I would want to actively listen to again. Lacking in direction and focus compared to 'Pornography' before it, this LP unfortunately succumbs to the ostentatious, blown-out orchestration that was common to 80s albums as the decade came to a close. At its best when it opts for the tight, chorus-drenched guitar, this album instead opts for grandiose synth numbers that feel bloated and tend to stretch track lengths well beyond their logical run times. Chop 30 minutes out and you have a solid Cure album, but in its current form 'Disintegration' is much too long and melodramatic to leave a mark.

Oddly mellow sound. Not bad as background music until you realize how depressing the lyrics are. LONG tracks. Poetic nature of lyrics is interesting, just wish it had a different focus.

I will admit that I was not excited when this album came up. I may be biased but I really dislike this genre and vocal styleand the cure is no different. I gave this album a listen but its just not music that I can enjoy. To each their own.

02/15 - Yesterday I worked on adding wall coverings behind all process equipment that has a loose hose attachment, adding the Train B Buffer Prep Platform Room into the model and adding corner guards around the Train B area. I also tagged all the items listed above in the elevations. I thought this album was okay. I am quite peculiar about the voice behind the song and this was just not doing it for me, although I though there were some really awesome beats.

I'm not sold on this album or the band's sound. Yea its tone goes out of its way to be the most over the top sad thing you could think of. Bleak, washed out guitar tones makes the whole thing feel like a gloomy rainy day in March or November. Fascination Street is actually my speed though. Growling bass fills a more harsh and aggressive soundscape. Yep this is teenage angst turned up to 11.

Robert Smith is a great guitar player, so many cool guitar licks and synth parts to the album, but it’s too long, becomes boring, repetitive, and I don’t think life is as bad as this guy is selling it. Especially considering he was probably a rich rocker at the time of this album’s release. Not my type of rock overall.

Tried really hard to see anything in it but everything blended together into one homogenous drone and for the longer songs I was begging them to either do something or just end. The music and the vocals are competing to see which one can be more nothing. Lovesong makes a little playful attempt at being listenable but it can't drag out the one good idea for a whole 3 minute song. You would think the title song would at least be good but when they should be belting out the crescendo of the song the singer just sounds bored and whiny. Pray for the WW2 veterans who were being psychologically tortured by watching their daughters gag over this guy's shitty joker cosplay and had to endure his music on top of it. (He's fine as hell in Lovecats though I love that song)

What a slog. The songs are all half light and airy instrumental and half with dull uninspired vocals. I don't even know if I can tell the difference between the tracks. And why are these tracks so damn long? 7, 8, 9 minutes? You could condense them all down to 2 and still lose nothing. I'd heard Friday I'm In Love and Tainted Love before, so I was curious to hear their other songs. Well, not anymore. Best song: Prayers For Rain

Did not want to listen to this. Track 1 - Plainsong - not bad, still not absolutely gripping me Track 2 - I hate this type of singing, perhaps hate is too strong a word but I just dont find any of these kinds of songs interesting. It is not bad per se but not my liking Track 7 - Fascination Street - better than the rest so far I still maintain I am the type to like ALL music, all genres and everything but this for me is not a MUST listen to. It is fine. That is how I see it.

I alr know this album and i hate it. I hate songs like this that are now used to perform some sort of personal autenticity by people that lack it.

Not a fan

This album features loads of plodding, overly-long numbers played in a lazy generic-Cure style that barely wavers from track to track, as though the band had calcified by this point. Nearly every song has the identical chord-change-unfailingly-on-the-downbeat structure that makes listening nothing less than tedious. Robert Smith wanted to make some kind of monumental statement with this record and ended up with a bombastic, overblown snoozefest that lacks any of the humor or spark of the band's more upbeat work.

The Cure is just not for me. 1 Star

Getting The Cure two days in a row was something. Certainly cured me from the desire to kick back and relax with an album listen. I gave up on the 3rd track. It's never going to be my vibe. Repetitive effects, samey-samey vocals, and not a singular moment of inspiration on the guitar or drums. Goths apparently do not riff. I read the wiki and went back to listen to Lovesong as the most popular track. Yes, it's a bit of a jam. It's not boring like the rest of the mood, someone add synth tracks, and it's very pop-y. It's also the shortest track in this album, like 25% shorter than the other tracks on average. So you can imagine rest of the album is a pure slog. On the very next track, I gave up again.

Thought I was going to hate this and actually only dislike it. It's all a bit dull teen angst from the 80s with far too many monotonous instrumentals.

Moody but catchy. The album balances just on the line for me. I like a few songs but can't really listen through some of the others. I'm conflicted on how to rate this but since I don't think I will listen to the songs again or add them to any playlists I can't give it a high rating.

I have never heard an entire album by the cure before this. Admittedly they never grabbed my attention and part of me really wanted to enjoy this, to finally ‘get’ them. Alas, that did not happen and I am firmly in the ‘not a cure fan’ camp.

Didn’t like this. Even tried having it on as background music and couldn’t take it.

I spent a whole hour waiting for something interesting to happen. The Cure surely had appeal as a cultural phenomenon, something relatable for teenagers as we went through some existential shit. As a band, on this recording, they show a remarkable commitment to a single approach to songwriting: Robert Green is sad and all we do is play little phrases four times between his earnest yearning. At the same tempo. In the same key. With the same timbre. I can't believe there are 12 songs on this album. If it was a police line up, I'd throw my hands in the air and say "Fuck it, let them all go free". There is no way to tell which is which. I never got into The Cure and I wasn't sure why until now. Now it's clear that I just didn't notice them.

According to Wikipedia when this was written the guy was on drugs, and to be fair you can tell. The whole album consists of whining/talking over some dead demo-track sounding guitar and drums. I don’t know how this peaked in the charts. The only explanation I can think of is everyone was collectively depressed that year and felt like being edgy. Well you’re not being edgy, you’ve just got not taste in music.

Just terrible. I liked the instrumentation on a couple of songs (Prayers For Rain, for one) but I can't stand his voice and the lyrics were either inane or whiny, and the attempts to be deep were embarrassing. 1.5 stars
