Already listened to it
Easy listening! Made me feel a little sleepy though.
A band I'm mostly unfamiliar with. I thought this had a strong start, got kind of bogged down in the middle, but finished very well.
Pop melancólico con buenas melodías y buena voz. Ningún tema especialmente destacable, pero agradable de escuchar
Strong 3, some catchy ones on this
A haiku: Some very cool songs, Others are not as special, What’s the name of this? 7/10
Indie album with a few honorable mention songs. I wish this was a 10 point scale because 3.5 is where it belongs to me.
Quite a nice indie album. The first few songs are stronger than the rest, however. Furthermore, such an album I'd personally put on as background music whilst doing something else, but it isn't enough for me to take notice of the music itself. Whilst a nice album to listen to, I didn't impress me to a significant extend
so weird
Levyllä on omat hetkensä, joiden perusteella ymmärrän jollain tavalla suuren suosion hipsteripiireissä. Ehkä nämä meriitit sitten antavat yhtyeelle taiteellisen vapauden täyttää puolet albumista todella keskinkertaisella fiilistelyllä.
Interesting. I dig it, mostly. Pretty space-y. Some reminds me of Shaky Graves. Some reminds me of The Life Aquatic.
I thought it was good, but a little too "dreamy." I don't know if it is something I would ever come back to, but I get the appeal, I think. The tone and feel is sparse, but I get what they're going for.
I mean, it's fine. Vocals are soft and sweet, fits well with the high-tuned or low-fret guitar playing plus keyboard and other electronica. I did recognize Two Weeks, also fine. There's a trend here. Maybe it's me and I don't appreciate enough new folk or indie rock. But it's no Simon and Garfunkel or CSNY. Perfect to play in the background of a shop in the mall. Or a hipster cafe.
chill indie experimental vibes 3.5 "Fine for now" intro is a bit logic just ripped and sped up for a song
Starts off interesting, plateaus and drops at the end. To the point that I just want it to end. It's decent indie rock, not my style though.
I dont like so much this type of music ... but it is not bad
// Favs: – Score: Strong 3 to Light 4
alright, nothing special
Recognised a few songs from adverts and such. Melodic
Boring but ok
Un album un peu éclaté pour moi.cependant de bons musiciens et une bonne exécution.3.25
There were bits that I liked. Iconic? No.
Somewhat interesting. Loved the video for 'Ready, Able.' Might give this one another listen sometime. I like the decisions they make - they take some cool turns along the way.
Two weeks as a standout hit, but not bad all around! Also enjoyed About Face. Could use a bit more variety though.
There wasn't much here that I disliked, but not much that was exciting to me either. The best thing I can say about this album is that it sounds like it was a lot of fun to record - the guitar and synth tones sound very meticulously crafted.
liked it better today than i did back in 2009
This is roughly up my alley. A nice air to it. Rather enjoyed it actually. Could certainly listen to it again. Almost certainly won’t. Slap a big ol 3 sticker on it and let someone else walk it home.
3.5
An indie darling that I've never been able to really get into, even with a renewed listen. Points for pushing boundaries, but there's not a lot here to really grab onto. Best track: Ready, Able
Average indie
it was okay. i cant say anything bad about it but it just wasn’t interesting in any way. it was good background noise but i would never go out of my way to listen to it, but nothing made me upset but nothing stood out. completely average in a good way i guess!
Indie
Not the most interesting album in the world, kind of felt like an album of Beatles tracks that didn't make the cut, but I enjoyed it enough for 3/5
No denying the ambitiousness of this album and the musicianship is laudible as well as the complex arrangements. They remind me of Steely Dan. Now having said that I've owned this albvum for at least 5 or 6 years and I've listened to it only 5 or 6 times. So something about keeps me at arms length. I'll give 3.5 stars
From the start I thought I'd enjoy this, and overall it's a good listen. Doesn't really have any killer tracks, but filled with gentle rhythms and melodies which kept my interest.
three
A decent album, nothing too memorable as standout good/bad. A lot of appeal as a good album just a little out of my range of music. 3.5/5
It was nice to have a slightly different genre come up. I can't pick any particular faults with this album, it just didn't feel good enough for anything but an average rating. A pleasant experience though.
Está chido, pero empalagoso
Esta bueno, me gustó, pero no se si lo volvería a escuchar.
Decent Album. A little obscure for my taste
Great album.. two weeks is on another level though. The foreground is spectacular too.
Really curious how this got to be on this list. It's not a particularly *great* album but it is very weird and I can't recall ever hearing anything like it so I guess it's got that going for it.
false
It has Two Weeks, but the rest is emotive, interesting, but just a little dull.
Enjoyable and worthy of a revisit
Another ok album on a list of ones that should be unmissable. Not a bad listen though.
Mid/Late Noughties indie. Reverb over everything. Best Tracks: Two Weeks, Fine For Now, While You Wait For The Others
Solid indie-rock album. But never heard it.
I actually kind a like this. It feels very atmosperic. It's vibey. I like it. I reminds me of a more rocky cavetown.
"Go on, let it go, it doesn't mean a thing (I'm cheerleading myself, I shouldn't really matter)" (Cheerleader) Tenía esperanzas en que este disco me gustase pero la verdad es que me ha aburrido un poco.
Nice arrangements, I like the background vocals. The songs aren't punchy or catchy but they grow on you.
I really like grizzly bear and I liked this album. It’s got some tunes in it.
Nuanced, layered, complex
Pretty good.
Starts off strong then declines. Not bad but pretty boring for most of it.
Unique Indie sound. A bit too long of an album but they had their own special sound to sell and I enjoyed it.
Veldig alternativt dette her, ja :) While You Wait For The Others var ålreit.
Two Weeks er en klasselåt - men resten av albumet får jeg ikke helt fot på... Jeg forsøkte til og med en kopp te - men trenger muligens mer urter for at dette skal ta av.
Strong vibes of Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, would be a big fan with many more listens. I can tell that this is a good contemporary-ish indie-ish album with cool and interesting melodies. Kind of like if late Arctic Monkeys and early Weeknd was a single musical being
Interesting calm folk music. Didn’t particularly bop tho.
Busy, ornate, and well-produced. Ear-candy indie stuff. Personally, somewhat bloodless and empty in my opinion...it just doesn't stick with me.
I like a couple of these songs but the album itself has never really grabbed me. Some of their albums are solid, for me this is not one of them.
Some great songs but the rest was too esoteric for me
Fav: Two Weeks
Not bad. Indie album with some interesting prog feelings. I'd listen a couple more times to try to feel this one out.
Cool.
Got that indie sound of it's era. Ornate. Too pretty for me.
I liked two songs, the rest couldn't keep my attention even after multiple listens.
Pretty alright. Chill album, second song was known and added to playlist. I liked it but it's kinda background music
I'd heard two weeks a bunch, but the rest didn't grab me
A pretty good indie-folk album with a lot of sleepy instrumentals. Definitely worth the listen but I'm not sure how often I'll be returning to it after this. Stand out songs are two weeks(like duh), dory, and Hold still. I will say this album does seem to blend together to feel like one large song at times.
The album felt very non traditional for the most part. I listened while working and driving. only one time. I really like Two Weeks, though I think that this could be because I've been exposed to it so often.
A little to whiney for my taste, but overall a pretty good album.
So alt.!
It’s obviously a great album... not sure what is though that just doesn’t excite me!?
Meh…
Reeks of 2000s PBR and pretentious smugness
It's ok. Tried this one when new and ... Same result
I'm actually a big indie rock fan, but this album is nothing but boring; it was really a chore to listen to.
ik denk gewoon niet dat ik dit had moeten horen voordat ik eventueel sterf
What a snooze fest.
just nothing
Except for that one song, was not a fan, got through it but would not listen again
This is the type of indie music that I just don't gel with. It relies too much on having a 'vibe' than any hooks and I found this album to be completely forgettable, even after I gave it two full listens. Boasting layered harmonies, "Two Weeks" sounded like a group of hipsters trying to reimagine the Beach Boys, but with limited success. It is still my favourite cut on here though. Some of the more busier and noisy parts of songs show a lot of potential, but everything goes on for far longer than it needs to be here. Technically everything sounds decent, so I can't hate on this too much. For a band called Grizzly Bear, these guys don't have a lot of bite.
- I am sure this will sound rude, but there is a reason why "Two Weeks" is the clear standout here. - This would usually be up my alley, but something about most of these tracks just felt anemic...every time the song got close to breaking into a different emotional, melodic, or rhythmic register (the orchestral elements of "I Live With You" being an example), Grizzly Bear just treats to the monotony of its haunting melancholy. This band should be better than this. - Dumb point: releasing a song called "Dory" that references fish known as dory was bold and probably misguided so close to the powerhouse of Finding Nemo.
It might be because I wasn’t in the right mood, but this album felt too passive and boring for me
Not a fan. Just did not vibe to it personally.
This felt consistently boring throughout. I couldn’t even finish it in one sitting. 4/10
Incredibly boring album, like 2 good songs and there was a lot of absolutely nothing in the middle of this
I don't know why I never followed up on Two Weeks. I liked it as a radio hit: big vocal hook, rhythmically interesting. But perhaps too much like the other bedroom indie of the period, which promised much competence and dazzle, but always ended up shallow and muddled. Listening now, I was probably right. Two Days with its dazed fixation on time - "save up all the days/a routine malaise" - diagnoses something, that wide access of digital recording gave everyone the time and hard drive space to agonise over their own Beach Boys record. The very capable could take forever over songs that didn't require forever, making blunt what once was sharp and urgent and polishing up what was always effluent. What should, in theory, allow an artist to produce something to perfection, just produces something dull. You can feel it only a few tracks in, ten minutes feeling like two weeks. 2 My work calendar’s Thought for the Day is the following: ‘If we don’t see things through the eyes of love, then we are more likely to have a distorted view of them’ I was about to open with a nice, economical ‘Grizzly Bear suck.’ but then I saw that and it gave me pause. Well…enough pause to write that out anyway. I’ve never actually met anyone who ‘loves’ Grizzly Bear despite associating with many people in my time who one would guess, from the cut of them, might well love Grizzly Bear. Honest to God, what’s to love? The gestures of musical intelligence are here - Grizzly Bear can count, even to the odd numbers, and can probably even play a few of the trickier Radiohead songs on guitar. The gestures of ‘authenticity’ are there - guitars presented like they were all take one in Bon Iver’s log cabin. But there is a pathetic barrenness about everything. The fancy rhythms and curtailed phrases savour of cold sophistry. The songs meander to no destination. The musicians transmit no sense of identity - not even, especially not, the singers. The vocals are helpfully double-tracked and filtered to make the lyrics difficult to hear but there is no hiding the fact that Grizzly Bear have nothing to say. ‘Look at us, we’re cool’ maybe. And people did and they were. That in itself wasn’t a phenomenon specific to the late noughties/early 2010s; the era now often remembered as peak ‘Hipster’. There have been bands playing that oul angle for as long as there have been bands and insecure people responding accordingly. There are bands like that still. Peak Hipster really did happen though and if this Grizzly Bear album genuinely ‘must’ be listened to then it is as a potent enough document of the artistic emptiness of that cultural moment. 1.5/5
Not unpleasant but really just background noise at best
That’s a weird one to be sure. Didn’t hear much of anything interesting to be honest
Pretty vocals, boomy drums, and somewhat repetitive piano motifs. I felt torpedoed back to the early 2010s with this album, which was nice for the first 5 or so songs, but my mind wandered and the songs began to blur together after that. I can't think of a setting where I would want to listen to this entire album again, but one or two of the tracks stood out, particularly Southern Point and Dory. I liked the overall dreaminess, but it got boring quickly.
I guess that I just don't like Chamber Pop very much.
This made me angry.
Grizzly Bear was hot shit back in my youth. I wasn’t sure if I’d heard any of their songs, then “Two Weeks” got to its hook and I went “Oh, this song, right.” I will say that I remember seeing the cover of their next album ‘Shields’ absolutely everywhere in 2012, but whatever. That’s not what we’re here for right now. It is definitely a 2010s indie revival progenitor, already making it less derivative than the artists and albums in its wake. They seemed to have more ideas. Also reminded me of late-period Beatles at certain turns (“All We Ask”) and CSNY in their vocal arrangements (“Fine For Now”). Most of the songs have that same mid-tempo, considered chug to them. It is pretty enough but overstays its welcome. The dreamy, twinkly psychedelic folk rock can only go on so long before it becomes sleepy and lethargic. I’d be interested in exploring more of their stuff since they were so influential at the time when I first got into music, but I wasn’t terribly compelled by this one. It’s all a bit too precious for me.
Really good for background music that you just play and you kinda listen to it and it sounds like something you would hear during a Road trip montage in a Disney movie
I had hopes for this one after the first song. But it kinda just went on and I couldn't really get into it.
Booooring. If I was in the right mood, I think some of this has some interesting stuff going on, but as a whole it just might as well have put me to sleep. 3/10 Ho Hum
Background noise. Pleasant, but completely forgettable.
Cool album cover, cool name, background music.
Overall this sounds like a collection of songs I would quickly skip if they came up in my weekly Spotify Discover playlist. The opener Southern Point sounds very 70s in some way to me, and likewise Two Weeks sounds like the Beach Boys. I was interested to read the top 5-star review of this, which contains a lot of comments like "Marked by rhythmic intricacy, instrumental complexity, innovative chord structures, and elaborate vocal arrangements"; "Listen to the predominance of major seventh chords on “Southern Point”." This tells me that this is probably a very technically accomplished album and experts can probably get a lot out of it. I don't know anything about music, so I am rating based on my personal enjoyment, which I think is the only honest way to rate anything. As good as this may be from a skill standpoint, it leaves me cold and honestly a little bit irritated.
Boring as hell
Medio embole
A very forgettable album
11/05/26 nada a oferecer o tipo de música que estaria na trilha sonora de um filme mediano ou que vc pularia dps de ouvir 5 segundos em uma estação de rádio 2/5 / 4/10
I've never heard of this, but I already have low expectations of it. Of course, it's a generic 2000s indie rock album that sounds like every other 2000s indie rock album. The lyrics aren't really noteworthy, and neither are the actual songs. Nothing here is really all that great, but none of it is explicitly terrible. It's just background music, and that prevents it from being listworthy. This album is not important at all, and it has no legacy. So-and here comes the question I've asked too many times before- why is it on the list? What makes it stand out from other 2000s indie rock albums that didn't make the list?
Love the song Two Weeks but couldn't get into the rest of it at the time and on listens now. Soundtrack for a 2000s Brooklyn hipster.
Monotonous
Meh
What a remarkably dull album. You’ll recognise Two Weeks as a well sampled bit of music, but there really isn’t anything else of note here. The rest is just a meandering low key sound that would be fine as filler for a track or two on a good album, but 50 minutes of it really drags.
Had this very late-2000s indie folk album been about 30 minutes long rather than over 50, I'd have been inclined to give it 3 stars. However, given its duration I can only give it 2. It's very pretty background music, but it's quite simply not interesting enough to justify such a long runtime, especially when by far the best song, ‘Two Weeks’, is only track 2/12. I found myself increasingly bored as it floated along. Most songs are so lightweight they struggle to make any impact at all. It's quite similar to early Fleet Foxes, just not as good.
We listened to this together outside in the hammock...despite the good vibes, both of us were pretty meh about it. Sounds like Fleet Foxes and once you heared one song, you've heard them all. Next!
Nothing new. Maybe there was a time that this was more appealing to me, but it just sounds like generic sad-boy rock.
Nice
Some decent stuff but not very good
This millennial burger place album really overstays its welcome
Not my cup of tea.
Whatever you call this type of music - indie rock, post-punk, Brit shit - it is very, very clearly the editor's favorite. I'm about 1/3 of the way through, and about 1/3 of what I've heard falls into this generic indie rock with a hint of prog. It's become exceptionally monotonous and boring. I tried to challenge myself by naming a 4* album that didn't make the list for every 2* that did, and even that became tedious. Just slightly less tedious than listening to the entirety of this album. Influence 2. Hits 2. Quality 3. Intangibles 2. Guess what? Yup. It's a 2.
It's... fine?
To be honest, I completely forgot I’d even listened to this until I saw it staring back at me in my Spotify history. It’s the kind of record that feels like sitting in a stiff wooden church pew, meticulously hand crafted and technically "perfect," but so polite and understated that it frequently bleeds into the background. I get that people love the arrangements and songwriting, but for me, it felt more like a fancy lullaby than some mind-blowing experience. The good songs, like "Two Weeks," are catchy, but they're surrounded by a bunch of quiet, dull stuff. It's definitely an album for a specific mood, but that mood is so dreamy and calm that if you're not paying attention, it's gone. I can see the cool production and everything, but it was too chill and didn't really stick with me.
A bit too avante garde
Really mopey album that does nothing particularly well. This is the kind of music you hear when you're about to pay $20 for a burger that's served to you on a newspaper. "Two Weeks" is catchy and the only reason this isn't a 1.
Hardly an album I need to listen to before leaving this earth. Present bias hit the author big time with this inclusion.
When I was younger I really tried to like Grizzly Bear as much as the people I knew who played guitar liked them. It just never connected. Not bad but just nothing strikes out to me about these guys. I can see these guys being somewhat exciting in the Aughts as their sound was being crowded out but there was a pretty fierce revival of Grizzly Bear-types and Veckatimest fades into the fabric for me.
This REALLY feels like an example of recency bias, where some critic in 2010 or whenever just nominated their own favourite album from the previous year. I've never heard of the band or the album before, and I don't think it's had the impact or influence to merit a place on this list. It was nice enough, especially the harmony singing, but there was nothing especially memorable about it for me. They seem to have two modes - quiet indie like a less lively version of Badly Drawn Boy, and cacophonous noise. Neither of them particularly appeals.
Honestly struggling to think of much to write about this. Not bad enough to warrant a 1 star but I was quite bored by the end of it. Definitely won’t live long in the memory.
Wodee das crazy saai.
Meh
It was ok, but I’m not sure what it is doing in this list.
This is like being taken hostage by a deranged maniac who is planning on destroying the world becuase a girl he liked rejected him. He tells you his plan to ruin the world for all the happy people. You're not sure if he is doing this on purpose, but he is often adding phrases like "then Nicole will love me", and "then I'll be the only one left for Nicole". At the last minute Nicole knocks on the door. She comes in and opens this guys eyes up to the face he has lost the plot and needs to abandon this plan. She also tells him there is no way she could be with a man who did something like this. He unties you and falls to his knees, now devoid of any purpose. What is the point in destroying the world if Nicole won't love him for it? You don't give a fuck. Fuck this guy, and fuck Nicole too. You shuffle out of this guys house and make your way to the nearest bus stop.
Lowkey Alt rock
It's ok, I guess.
Not my type of music and I didn't care for the production values.
The music is so damn good on this album, but it is all ruined by the singer. I can’t stand this dude’s voice at all.
Overall, underwhelming. I didn't love or find most of it interesting. Ready, Able was a really good track, but one track can't save the album for me. I will listen to that one again, but I could leave the rest of this album behind.
2.5
Interesting
Pretending to be cool Indie sound isn’t for me. They have potential, but this album didn’t showcase any of it. The production value was just ok.
too long, makes it boring
Quite forgettable 2
Really?
This is my first listen to this album and this group. This style of sort of folky but with reverb is not what I would seek out. But thanks to the generator/list I heard this album today. Other than the piano playing and the 2 or 3 catchy songs nothing really stood out and one song more or less blends or bleeds into the next. This is not poorly done it just doesn't do much for me.
Another album that is just decidedly mid and I don’t think it really should be here
Dreamy indie folk rock. I like that the chord structures and the rhythms are a bit unique, but I found myself tuning out while trying to listen to this. I can see why some people might like it but it's not for me.
++: All We Ask, Fine for Now, , Hold Still, I Live with You, Foreground +: Southern Point, Two Weeks, Dory, Hold Still, While You Wait for the Others +-: Cheerleader, Ready, Able, About Face 5,5/10
Not bad, I guess. I was living in Rhode Island around this time and this sounds like what I was hearing everywhere.
I found this to be a very bland album with not a single memorable track to break the monotony.
Couldn't get into this. Reminded me of the Fleet Foxes, not that this is a good thing you understand.
Listening to the first track, I thought this could actually be something interesting. Then every track after it sounded just the same and I quickly got bored.
No ei lähteny.
overall two weeks overall underwhelmed
A bit Metronomie esque for my liking.
A too experimental and abstract version of Fleet Foxes. Whilst Fleet Foxes bring a little more joy and light to the music, this often felt a bit too dark and introspective. The first few tracks I was fairly on board but then it just became a bit too morose for me.
Pretty forgettable indie rock. Pleasant enough for background music but it's too long.
This varied between forgettable and actively bad.
bo
It has its moments but god does it drag.
boringggg. saved: n/a.
Kendte en enkelt, men generelt ret kedeligt.
Too cool for me.
Elverum-inspired psychedelic indie with claustrophobic vibe. Nothing remarkable, but still listenable
"Two Weeks" has such emotion for an album that was otherwise *daring* me to pay attention and not be bored.
A very lacklustre affair, with zero spark or hooks to the song.
Ts was ass <3
This is a very good album, and I had already come across a few tracks from it on my own, which I enjoyed. Unfortunately, I don't think it's a *great* album. I would describe this as a steady album, with no great peaks or valleys in quality, but unfortunately being so flat makes it kind of unmemorable. There's tons of indie folk rock out there that's more interesting than this - trust me, I've listened to quite a bit of it. Favorite track: On this listen, "Two Weeks"
I have no idea what this album is about or what genre it falls under. It's a mix of everything, and it's incoherent as shit.
late aughts tumblr core
This is middle of the road for me landing dead in the middle at a 2.5/5. Rounding down since there are many other 3’s I would reach for before this, as I found it pretty boring.
too much meandering
Ei oikein jäänyt mitään mieleen tästä levystä. Muutama hyvä biisi.
Twee, lightweight and intermittently actively annoying to listen to. No thanks.
If I’d heard this in 2009, maybe in the soundtrack of a Zack Braff movie, I bet I’d like it more.
Odd how the version of me would have given this 4 or maybe 5 stars. But now this is barely listenable. Outside of “Ready, Able” it all sounds whiny.
Chill. Have mixed feelings about the aesthetic though
hmm... i seem to have been teleported from the berenstein universe where grizzly bear was good to the berenstain universe where grizzly bear sucks. i was genuinely excited to get grizzly bear because i knew i had some songs saved from them (off this album, no less!) and had conceptions they were more of the indietronica ilk that i grew up with. guess that goes to show how much egg can get on your face when you move through life assuming things based on vibes alone without cognitively verifying how, exactly, the music of any particular band sounds. now, this album didn't SUCK suck: i hear some great stuff in the songs i had picked out / liked well enough to save on this front-to-back listen, and broadly speaking i think this album is interesting in the context of what indie sounded like circa ~2010 ... but AT LEAST i thought i'd want to dance at some point. i just wanted to nap instead :/ highlights - southern point, two weeks, fine for now, ready, able, while you wait for the others
I own and love Two Weeks, but other than that the album was pretty boring.
had a few hits but overall the album didn't grab me in as much as I'd like, a bit too ethereal sounding and out there for me
Mid
Meh. Elevator music.
I didn’t like this one. I couldn’t get into it and it seemed to be going out of its way to be weird.
What a two breathtaking 2
Rather boring!
Meh
Quite a new album relatively speaking, nice. To me, this felt like quite a generic rock/folk album, though. It has that modern folk/american rock sound, but I mean, if you're going to take something interesting from in the vicinity of this sound, why not go for Bon Iver or something? Think I've heard 'Two Weeks' before, which also stood out as one of the better tracks. Other than that this didn't do that much for me. Don't want to put this on again, but it wasn't the worst either. Still, considering how much other interesting stuff there is sounding similar to this, I kind of want to put it down to a strong 2.
So hipster it hurts my ears! It has an aggressive band name but mellow music, check. Meandering guitars, check. It’s too early for stomp-clap-hipster, bearly, but it’s really not far off. Made me think of the Fleet Foxes without the folksy undertones. I found this meandering and above all quite boring. Seems like songs you would hear everywhere in coffee shops around 2010. I just missed any type of energy or feeling in this music. 2 star.
By all accounts Grizzly Bear should always be right up my alley. I enjoy sensitive 2000s Indie Rock without a doubt. It’s just that his vocals so frequently vanish into the music that I forget I’m listening to anything. Two Weeks is a standout with that Brian Wilson stank I love to hear, but outside of that this is a forgettable album for me.
Elevator music, essentially. Nothing particularly exciting.
Lidt udefinerbar genre. jazzy singer-song-writish. Ikke decideret træls at lytte til, men heller ikke mindeværdig.
Not very good.
Having only heard Two Weeks before, I was optimistic about this album knowing how great that song is. Unfortunately, the rest of the album does not live up to the highs of that song. There were a few other songs I liked but the rest of them I mostly found boring. Some cool melodic sounds but they never really go anywhere. 4.75/10 (2.375/5)
Certainly well-produced and arranged, but aside from a couple of highlights, songwriting here is mostly kinda boring.
Pretty generic alt/indie record. Wouldn’t actively listen again but it’s good to put on for background vibes.
It was a 2.
A poor man's Shins. Nothing real stood out. Not offensive
A low calorie Radiohead with some Talking Heads influences thrown in. In spite of that, it didn’t really hook me.
theres a few ok tracks on here but i could get into most of it
I had Two Weeks on a random playlist for years and really like the song. Unfortunately the rest of the album is not so good - in fact I found it rather annoying.
Veckatemest The amazing new album from The National Grizzly Beasts Collective On Drugs. I enjoyed the first few songs, the influences of The Beach Boys, Love and 60s psychedelia combining to make some very pleasant psych-folk, Southern Point in particular has an excellent folky pulse and groove, and the harmonies and wonky piano combo on Two Weeks is great. I quite like All We Ask to, it has a nice sense of charm to it. But after that it feels like it takes a nosedive into a very generic, very twee and wet late 00s indie sound and feel, and it's a bit of a drag, feeling very long, with nothing as good as the first two songs to perk things up. Even something like Cheerleader, which starts promisingly enough fades into a kind of forgettable vagary of a song, the interest in the initial riff just getting lost. Like a lot of that late 00s stuff it’s well made and nicely considered, and not unpleasant, but ultimately I’m just not that into the genre and style. I doubt I would come back to it so I’ll go 2. 🐻🐻 Playlist submission: Southern Point
Meh.
Synes jeg har hørt det her album, selvom jeg aldrig har lyttet til bandet før. Not for me
2 bangers, the rest was boring.
I thought by the band name that I was gonna hear some headbanging, go to the chiropractor and get your neck adjusted rock n roll. Not sure what I got instead. It was okay.
This is very of its time. A middling album from the low-fi, indie music of the 2010s. The first two or three songs are fine, but after that you realise that nothing is going to change. It doesn’t.
Bland
Eh didn't set the world on fire
I only know Grizzly Bear from the heavily sampled song Two Weeks, so this was a fairly blind listen. It seems to me like Grizzly Bear, at least on this album, exists as a distillation of how most indie rock sounded during the hipster years of the late 2000s, early 2010s. Not bad at all, but not really doing much for me.
Only knew that one song that played everywhere in 2014. Rest kinda sucked
A couple of good songs strung together by dreary toss.
Did my brain think Panda Bear when it saw the cover? Yes. Was I dreading an album full of Animal Collective-style bleepy-bloopy bullshit? Yes. Was I relieved that this was Grizzly Bear instead? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Not particularly. This album was huge with some of my co-workers when it came out, but its charms were lost on me. Not much has changed since. "Two Weeks" is fine, and there are other moments here and there. Hey, at least it's not Panda Bear!
All these late 2000s bands named after animals and none of them had the cajones to actually dress up like the animals they claimed to be. Making whiny music doesn't make you an animal, it makes you a whiner. Speaking of which keep your eyes open for the hopefully late 2025 release of "Lighthouse" the debut album by Ghost Tyger & Friends which has a singer who does goes to the nines in dressing up like a tiger and does very little whining because REAL ANIMALS DON'T WHINE.
Oh no, it's more mopey soft rock.
Back in the late 2000s when Grizzly Bear was gaining some attention, I checked out their music, but nothing really stood out to me. Now that I’m exploring baroque and chamber pop more, I thought I’d give Veckatimest another shot since it’s a popular pick. Unfortunately, it still lands somewhere in the middle for me. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t hit any emotional highs either. There are a few cool and catchy parts, but the album as a whole just doesn’t do much for me.
Two Weeks is (even if overplayed) a great song, with lovely Beach Boys style harmonies. I liked Ready, Able too. But for every decent song, there were a couple of unlikeable ones, and on the whole I found more of this irritating. The wavery tone to the singer's voice is less noticeable on the faster songs, or those with harmonies, but is a little annoying on the slower numbers. A high two.
It was ok but felt kind of generic. Easy listening tho, not bad.
Not for me
I think I would be perfectly fine if I would die without ever hearing this album. It’s not that it’s terrible, but there just isn’t anything special about it
I was bored by this in 2009. I am bored by it now. For the hipsters and craft brewers who love this stuff, I am glad it exists, but I don't have a hipster sized hole in my life. Again, if Pitchfork or Robert Christgau loves it, I will probably detest it.
Just a bit dull
Just didn't engage me
It was alright in places but I often found it just kinda filling the background.
Ambitiöst, men lite för svårt för mig.
Pretty chill and fairly nice while it was on. I probably won't choose to listen to anything from here again, but it wasn't too bad while it was playing
This is #day373 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… yet another inessential indie schmindie record from the '00s trying a little too hard to sound edgy. If I had to sum it up: pretentious, bland, whiny, pseudo-hipster shit. You don't have to hear this before you die. This is a low 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day374.
I had never even heard of the band before listening to this album, so I approached it without any bias. My first impression is that it’s really a melting pot of many, many different influences, ranging from 70s psychedelic rock to Radiohead and everything in between. It’s an interesting effort, and I can’t blame a musician for trying. And it does, at times, succeed : some songs are dreamy soundscapes that managed to surprise me. My second impression is that it sometimes tries to be too many different things at once, and ends up lacking a strong identity. It’s a bit too much on the hipster side, a bit too whiny, a bit too sweet... and I can’t help but thinking « I’ve already heard this before ». It’s really not a bad album, but I can’t rate it as a 3 since I’ve given 3 stars to much better albums before. It deserves a 2 for effort - maybe a 2,2 and a Macchiato, because I have a soft spot for strange dream pop.
There is something that I don't like while listening this album, I can't really express but a bad feeling. I don't realize also in which way it can have an influence on anyone... As it's not as bas as other album, I grant a 2 stars rating
Less Grizzly Bear, more Whiney the Poo. Hated the vocals and the general lacklustre, background music sound of this. I guess there's the odd brief sections where it sounds like things are going to pick up, but then it just goes back to mumbly, whiny stuff again. If there were such a thing as an album for betas, well this would be it. I didn't think an album that would evoke this response existed until today, so the sheer fact I had this (awful) experience is worth one extra star I suppose. Two stars still feels very generous though.
This is pleasant enough stuff hipster twaddle (I’m not a banjo fan). But I really don't know what it's doing on a list of the 1001 albums to hear before you die. 2⭐️
A bit too soft and etheral for me.
Meh
Some cool sounds here and there. Had the feel of going down a road and not getting anywhere or a dead end. I just have no idea what to get excited about here. I could not deferentiate any speciifc element or theme that changed. Lowest level of dynamism which just left this very boring. I had to slog through it despite having no specifc issue with the instrument just the art.
A fairly nice sounding album but its too long and not ground-breaking in any way. I didn't find it grabbed my attention at all and although I quite liked the first few songs, it never brought anything new and I had grown to resent it by the end.
Instantly forgettable
This is definitely hipster music from the birth of the term "hipster". Just very psychedelic and chamber driven, folky, indie music. Some of this is okay, and some of it is rather boring. I remember when "Two Weeks" was heavily played on the radio, but that is far and away the best song on this album, and even it pushes on being boring. This is definitely AN example of the indie sound going into the 2010s, but was it the best example, worthy of a spot on this project? Not in my opinion. This album quickly wore out its welcome.
A abertura promissora, com "Southern Point" não se configura ao longo do disco. O excesso de melodias melancólicas acabam por conduzir ao tédio. Nada muito interessante ou cativante. As interpretações vocais soam desinteressadas e frias. Fraquinho!
It’s definitely an indie rock album. Didn’t really make much of an impression on me.
About as toilet plate indie music as I can think of. Its like if Coldplay was kinda cool. I just didn't get anything out of this. It happened and I just want to move on. Kinda sad cause at least if I hate something I felt some kind of emotion. I felt nothing
If you told me this was Ai produced answer to makes some folk rock but 21st contemporary soundscape I wouldn’t be shocked. And no that isn’t a good thing. There are tantalising glimpses of B Wilson fanboy snippets and a whole lot of turgid over produced vapid sound to my ears. Some on here describe it as complex and well structured, with good harmonies but I found it lacking vocal rhythm and anything resembling exciting melody. I have no idea what he is bleating on about and it doesn’t make me want to care, some liken them to Elliott Smith but that does the latter a large disservice. I like folk rock and wanted to like these, the Fleet foxes and Lemon twigs but just I guess don’t like the contemporary sound. 2 Star.
Just whit noise in the background. I didn't skip the album tho
Not my thing
These guys definitely take themselves too seriously.
Rather odd. Was the bulk of sales made to the band's family?
Was twee and tiresome in 2009. That hasn't changed. We get it, you like Pet Sounds. All the 00's animal bands sucked except for Deerhunter.
point6.
Too twee and ephemeral, just whispery fluttery vocals and tinkle pianos. Pass
Not bad
Another new name for me. Pleasant, inventive, original, a bit dull.
Not a stand out for me. I think I would want this playing in the background if I owned a trendy coffee shop.
I bet Pitchfork gave this album a 10.
2/5. Some nice harmonies, but just not for me. Too slow and meandering, doesn’t connect with me.
Sounds like any other hipster indie rock album. Couple of pretty good songs, but nothing special
Kinda of bland.
I really don't know what it's doing on a list of the 1001 greatest albums of all time.
I didn't mind this too much. The songs were kind of slow and boring, but certainly not terrible.
This should not be on this list. Guitar sounds rough at times and voice is weak. Not a fan.
Result of bad combination of styles
This is that same artsy, avant-garde, pretentious bs that Radiohead falls into. I was done with this album after 2 songs. It’s pathetic hippy music that rends my very core. Bleh. There should be more Soundgarden on this list.
snooze. it wasn't offensive, irritating, or annoying. just boring.
The songs were not bad but they were boring.
yawn
Snoozefest. And another that I question as truly influential. So many of these albums I think are chosen just because some hipster wants to look cool by picking something obscure.
Defanged Radiohead coffee shop background music. zzzzz. But I looked up the island, and I think I've been there. I went to Naushon once as a young child (a family friend was a local politician and must have known someone) and I remember riding a horse there, which I probably never did again. It looks like you get to Naushon via Veckatimest.
I got this album a while ago on the strength of Two Weeks. Sadly, after giving it many chances to grow on me, nothing else on there is of the same quality - actually, that's not the correct word: everything here has the same "qualities", the problem is it feels like a collection of unfinished song ideas, rather than completed songs. A sketch of a chorus here, a little exploration of an instrumental idea there, and none of it really marries up into a finished composition bar the aforementioned single. Every track feels like it is building towards something, is threatening to take you somewhere interesting, but it never gets there. It's a pleasant enough journey, but ultimately it's a pointless and unrewarding one so far as I am concerned.
Nothing memorable
I don’t get it. Who likes all this boring stuff that can’t even be bothered to try doing anything more than navel gazing? The mid-00s were full of this kind of stuff whether it be Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, or this. It all drones on and on without ever arriving at a point. Maybe pointlessness is the point, but that just adds to the feeling that this is some self-important, pretentious bullshit.
I feel bad saying this album bored me, but it just reminded me of a lot of other bands. It’s not fantastic, but it’s not bad either. I thought the vocals were good, and I did feel genuine excitement when the formula was switched up and softer songs played. This just wasn’t my favorite.
decent album, was fairly easy to listen through. downloaded 2&7. likely wouldn’t revisit the full album on my own again but definitely think i could give it another listen
It’s just an average indie rock album. Even people who knew of this album where surprised it was here. Was a three but stayed way too long
Only two good songs on this album
I found this pretty boring. It kind of just drifted by without anything really grabbing me. The production is clean and the harmonies are nice, but the songs all sort of blended together into one long, sleepy listen. Maybe it’s meant to be more of a mood album, but for me, it just didn’t leave much of an impression.
Mid-2000s indie/alt band. Two Weeks is a good song. Fine for Now is a pretty good song. Most of it sounds pretty generic for the time, like Fleet Foxes and some songs a mix of Arcade Fire, but not as good. Which is probably what they were going for minus the not as good part. In theory it should be great but it's just okay.
There is exactly one track on this album worth a damn: "Two Weeks". Were it not for this track, it would be a solid 1/5. Instead, I'll give it a 2/5.
All I heard was a bunch of newbies practicing in their basement. It's okay Favorite Track: "Two Weeks".
Starting my day by saying, "Oh cool, it's that album with that one-hit wonder from high school I really liked," never ends well. Two Weeks always slaps though.
This was a little too quiet and serene for me.
It wouldn't be indie without being pretentious and this certainly fulfills that requirement along with being sad, depressing and moody.
Interesting sounds, but not memorable
I'm not sure where I really land on this - not bad, but nothing really stood out?
I’ve heard of the bear but not the band. Listening to this album, I think I’d rather be attacked by a real grizzly bear.
if it werent for Two Weeks I wouldnt have recognized a single note on this album. Another indie pop rock snoozer in most places, being different for the sake of being different. Maybe I'm a dick for saying that, but its just too depressing in places and giving me very gray and low vibes. pass.
For as good as “Two Weeks” is, this album is shockingly incoherent. Mumbly nonsense.
Indistinguishable clamoring of some NY hipster indie darlings
Got a bit boring at the end, but I still enjoyed it, even if it doesn't belong here. Fav song: Ready, Able Least fav song: Foreground
Understand why people would enjoy this but was just very unmemorable. 2.5/5
its not horrible but it is pretty boring to me and feel like it wont age any better in any possible way. I understand if you maybe like it, but for me thats really not an album i will revisit any given time.
This definitely turned into background music while listening to it. I can't see myself actively choosing to listen to this one again.
First? 2,5/5 Again? 1,5/5
This was my genre back in the day and I remember this album well. It was so hyped from everyone but honestly, I think outside of the 1-2 punch opener of Southern Point and Two Weeks, the album is just boring. There a few other songs that aren't too bad ("All We Ask", "About Face" and "Cheerleader") but over all, Vecatimest is such a chore to get through.
Piffle
honestly they kind of remind me of Fleet Foxes except even more boring and background music-oriented. "Two Weeks" is nice and I'll probably add it to my playlist, but that's really the only song on the album that stuck out to me. The rest is 2010s indie elevator music
So boring and ot something I'd consider influential... doesn't feel like it belongs on this list
