Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Thinking that I hadn’t heard of this band I was surprised that I knew and liked the song Two Weeks. It turned out that was the only stand-out song on an album of mediocre songs that went on way too long
OK if somewhat forgettable I'm not sure why I'd listen to this when Arcade Fire do this sort.of thing better?
Just another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex I'd never heard of the band before. Pleasantly surprised by it, quite enjoyed it (in a hipster kind of way). I think it would have had more impact with a shorter runtime, (30 mins-ish).
Veckatimest () is the third studio album by Grizzly Bear, originally released in 2009. Someone fetch me a slouchy beanie, black-rimmed glasses, overalls, and a scarf stat! Man, this record just oozes that early-2010s hipster vibe. Handlebar mustaches and Edison bulbs everywhere... It's not bad though! Reminds me a lot of Fleet Foxes although less reliant on vocal harmonies. These dudes seem to let their musical chops speak for themselves. The songwriting is a bit weak at times but not too bad for hipster stuff. Not super melodramatic/cringe or anything. I got this album generated on a cold fall day in November so it kinda fits the vibes right now.
I have to compare them to Fleet Foxes, the band I've recently discovered on this list. They both go in similar direction, but Fleet Foxes aren't afraid of going more folk-ish. Which is an advantage in my eyes, and in my ears. Nonetheless, good album. 3.5/5.
Mwah, very unbalanced album: 4 great songs (two weeks, cheerleader, foreground, and perhaps, while you wait etc) and the rest is mostly unlistenable. my vote in 2009: 4 stars my vote in 2024: 3 stars
Just a bit...dull? Inoffensive, but unexciting. Not really sure what warrants it on this list, maybe it grows on you. 2.5*
Fav: Ready, Able Least Fav: Cheerleader Very frustrating mix of incredible songs and boring songs, should’ve cut it down a little
The natural progression of mid 2000s indie pop, and probably its terminal point. Layered instrumentation, experimentation with The Sound, and lots of ideas jammed into each song. Too bad it just made me think of other albums I could be listening to. Nice as music for a quirky indie flick, but I don't know when in my life I would want to listen to this.
It's a pleasant indie rock album with nice singing and chill songs, but the songwriting isn't that very exciting. It's one of those albums that I can't remember any songs from it after I've finished listening to it.
I like a few tracks, Two Weeks is great.. The rest of the album is really nothing special or unique. The 2000's were loaded with this stuff.
2 Weeks is a good tune. Cheerleader is another that caught my ear. Otherwise a bit dull and ordinary.
Two great songs but as a whole album I find this so boring. Unfortunate. Extra star for two weeks though.
надо ещё послушать. так и не поняла откуда я знаю two weeks (возможно отовсюду), а в целом очень разнообразный альбом
For ages I thought this was somehow related to Animal Collective (probably got Grizzly Bear confused with Panda Bear) and only found out they were a completely separate band a couple of years ago Anyway, this is a really nice and dreamy indie record, with fantastic production throughout. The opening two songs are fantastic, especially the mega Two Weeks, and while the rest of the album is still a nice listen it really doesn’t reach those heights again and just kind of floats by
Kind of a quiet in the forest type album, not sure why it’s on here but better than another Kings of Leon.
Interesting album. It's a sort of avant-garde rock project, a bit ambient (I feel like a snob just describing this thing). But just listen to "Two Weeks" and that will heal that feeling. I've never really dived into Grizzly Bear but they're pretty solid based on this one. Favorite tracks: Two Weeks, Cheerleader, Foreground. Album art: Multicolor art wall installation thing going on. I do like it, though I don't have any clue how the title should be pronounced. 3/5
Good
Somewhere between “Matt and Kim” and “The Arctic Monkeys”, but ultimately I didn’t find a lot to come back for, besides that one mega-famous track.
They played their "hit" as track two and then kept going! It feels like going to a concert because someone you know had an extra ticket after someone else cancelled. At the encore you're like, "sure, but I could leave now and be home in time to still watch like one episode of Better Call Saul or something before I go to bed."
Not my fav album but some cool chill tracks on there.
Nothing really groundbreaking but it was a decent enough listen. 3/5
Fun and listenable maybe a bit forgettable
Recognised a few tunes on here. Will give this another listen next time I need some low key indie sounds.
Mid
Started off like a modern beach boys but just got weird and boring at the end
That was the best album named after a small island off the coast of Massachusetts I've ever heard.
"Two Weeks" is an indie pop classic from this era, but my knowledge of Grizzly Bear pretty much ends there. Everything else sounds very artsy and chamber pop-y. Never has the label "chamber pop" sounded more accurate, as the cacophony of instruments I heard in the last 50 min quite literally sounded like they were playing from within an echo chamber. Interesting sounds for sure, that also feel like they linger on a bit long. I still like this era of 2000's/2010's indie pop, though, and you can argue that a ton of creativity resulted from it. (Note: I definitely recognize "Fine For Now" after listening, as I recall Logic sampling that track)
An epic album with some absolute bangers eg. Two weeks and While you wait for the others. I just didn’t connect with it. Maybe on another day in another mood I’ll feel different.
It took me a minute but I ended up enjoying it.3
Sort of, alright I guess. Wishy-washy, but relatively listenable. Nothing to write home about.
A bit too hipster for my taste, sorry dudes. 3.3 stars
Some of it is really good, some of it is too arty. Favorite song: Fine for now
Reminds me of the fleet foxes. Ingredients are all there, but somehow the beats aren't hit. It's kinda catchy, cool instrumentation, real lyrics etc, but even after a double listen I couldn't make it work for me. Tried to write the review a week after and couldn't remember, listened again and nothing stuck.
Had an oh it’s that song moment which was cool. Rest of it was fine, boring at times.
6/10 - I really liked two weeks but other than that it was quite strange. A lot of it near the second half sounded just like noise.
This was really all over the place. Some good, some boring. I still don’t know if I like it or not
78% Fav: Two Weeks, Ready Able Least: Hold Still Must-Hear? Nah

I actually love two weeks but I’ve tried to love this full album many times since a lot of my friends with similar music taste love it and it just doesn’t fully capture me. That being said it’s probably slightly better than average. 3.5 Fun fact: my college roommate was ed droste’s cousin
Grizzly Bear have never been one of my favorite big Indie acts of the 2000's. That being said, this is without a doubt their best album, even if it is not very memorable outside of its big hit "Two Weeks". Key tracks: Two Weeks
I’m at a 3.5 that I’m rounding down to a 3. There’s not any bad tracks here, but there’s a number of tracks that just aren’t very captivating to me, and those tracks just drag the album down from the incredibly hot start it had. I was really into the first 4 tracks, but starting from Track 5, I think the album just gets a little too broad from a lyrical standpoint and for some reason, it just nagged at me the entire time. When the lyrics got too broad, the songs felt like they had less substance and less structure, and while that’s probably better for some people, it just doesn’t work as well for me. When the album does strike on tracks that have a structure and a substance during those final 8 tracks, I think it clicks really well, but it only does it a handful of times. There’s fantastic instrumentation throughout this album, but it just feels like too many of the songs on here are full of missed opportunity for my musical tastes – I want to dig deeper into these slice-of-life monotonous moments that are usually captured pretty well, but the scope of so many tracks being so broad just sort of left me underwhelmed. Once again, though, there’s not a bad track, and I don’t think this is a bad album. It’s just not fully my thing, but I can see how it could be someone else’s. It’s probably a 4 or maybe even a 5 for someone else, but for me, I’m just kinda stuck on a 3.
There are some great songs on this. When it gets going it really hits (While You Wait for the Others might be my fave). It's consistently pleasant to listen to. It does feel a bit sleepy too often, though. A good, not truly great, album.
Ah, I don't know - do I have to? Okay. There are a lot of really likeable ingredients and potential flavours in here but it's... overcooked. Maybe prog-folk-rock just doesn't need to be thing. One of the albums where I feel like there's something in there I should love but it's buried in self-indulgent baroque nonsense that irritates me.
it was alright. I was kinda bored
2024-07-04...
Hadn't heard of these guys before. Didn't mind the album. Might seek out some more later.
It's nice, but this ain't the list for this kinda mediocrity.
Nice, but forgettable
I think this one gets a bad rep for being just another "mainstream hipster, ho-hey" record. And it kind of flirts with that in some of the instrumentation. But I'll give it a pass given it was a time of transition for folk and indie music, and this was pretty common on nearly every album of that area. But by the opening track, I'm convinced there's so much more being offered. Right off the bat we're hit with dramatic dynamic changes over head-turning chord and key changes. And take a step back just to admire that bass line! Nothing about the track is boring or sleepy. Two Weeks, the most notable song off the album, and by this band, is where we can see the signs of falling into that cliche I mentioned. I still think this song is pretty great, but without the context of what came before or after, it would be a forgettable remnant of an era where everyone wanted to be cutesy twee pop. And finally...the rest. The album takes a pretty deep nosedive after Two Weeks into some very well-produced but sleepy and forgettable droning tunes. And this goes on for about an hour. I do appreciate the experimentation of beats and structure, but some straight forward jams would be a welcome break.
Interesting. Probably worth another listen. Didn't love it but didn't hate it.
Bland indie. Put some spices on that chicken damn
I knew of Grizzly Bear through Two Weeks which for me is still the highlight of this album. It is a solid, nice little Indie-Folk style album but for me it does nothing to stand out from the 20-50 other nice Indie-Folk bands from the same era. Don't get me wrong I like this album but it's not essential and I'm not sure why it belongs in the book.
I have a hard time figuring these guys out but do sort of like their stuff
3.7 I’ve heard worse
Not bad but didn't grab me. Made me feel like this daily list has limitations, because some records you need to sit with for awhile before they deliver their payload. Also, I thought this was going to be related to Animal Collective but I guess not?
I think the most interesting thing to me about this album is the name of the album and the connection to the island near Cape Cod, which sounds really cool. Not that there's anything wrong with the album, but it doesn't really speak to me. In some ways, it's a bit surprising that it debuted in 2009, as it feels like it could easily have been released 10 or even 20 years earlier. I *do * like it that songs from the album appeared in a couple of films, one of which I've seen and would say the music fits the film nicely ("Blue Valentine"). I also like how layered some of the songs are, a bit like both Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins (in different ways).
I listened to this on a plane and maybe it was the ambient noise but this album seemed fine but didn't make much of an impression.
Surreal. Ethereal. Dreamy. Lyrics that seem to be accessible but the meaning remains elusive. Still, I liked this album, an introduction to Grizzly Bear for me. I probably should give this another listen...
5/21/24. Pretty fun psychedelic album here, wasn't familiar with Grizzly Bear before yesterday but enjoyed it. Need to give it another spin, but liked what I heard on the first run.
3.5/5. Pretty good, I'd label this as typical indie rock from this time, but that doesn't mean this is bad. I enjoyed parts of this.
the only track i was already familiar with was Two Weeks, i love the vocals and piano in that song. this album kind of lost me, i ended up sort of zoning out because i was working on something else and didnt realize i had gone through like 4 songs because nothing particularly stood out to me or caught my attention except for the haunting, choir-like vocals in some parts. i wished there was a stronger pulse through more of the songs to keep me interested. i dont think id come back to this album except for the few songs i added to my library.
Good stuff. Cheerleader probably my fave 3.5
Ágætis indie! Fræga lagið best hehe.
This would be a good listen on a lazy day.
Decent background music. Could use a bit more urgency though.
Favorite Tracks: Two Weeks Southern Point
Two Weeks
Very excited to hear Two Weeks. It’s one of those songs I never would have known who it was by, but it was a welcome surprise in this album. I thought the album started really hot with the first few songs but I didn’t like the second half of it as much. Solid 3!
The variation between songs in the first half of the album was a welcome surprise, and not one we usually get when it comes to rock-ish albums on this list. A lot of the classic rockers have a distinct sound either on one album in across their entire discography. But of course, as I sing those praises the second half does slow way down and the tracks lose a little bit of that variety. When you add them both together you get a pretty good background music album. Other than Two Weeks, which get a lot of playtime on a couple playlists I regularly listen to, not a whole lot stood out. I do feel like this one deserves a second listen though, maybe on a road trip on a more dreary day.
I admit I didn't get all the way through because I found it dull. Nothing seemed to stand out, just seemed like generic Starbucks background music.
There was a point in my life when I swore by this album. That wasn't necessarily a dark period as much as it was an embarrassing one. This is decent enough. Don't expect it to change your life.
Easy listening. Nice but not a standout. 3 stars
I just liked it. Two Weeks obviously lives in the collective mind, but it was a nice album outside of that, too.
An intriguing album with an intriguing, shoegazey soundscape. I'm not used to listening to indie folk, or indie music as a whole really. Like every album, it's going to take a while to click. 3/10
Nice. It made me remind of cat faces by ugly casanovas
Two songs in and I thought I was going to really like this album. And I did like Two Weeks, but nothing else caught me. It was just kind of slow background music. Nothing bad, just nothing to make me want to go back either.
3.5 stars. I would've rated this album higher when I was younger. It's an eerie album. Lots of elements that would end up being big in the indie rock space in the 2010s. The singers have really dreamy affectations. "Two Weeks" and "Ready, Able" are big hits. A pleasant album, although some songs are indistinguishable sonically.
Good album. Original. Slow at times. Not life changing.
It was just a bit too boring for me.
I feel like they can make music I really like. It’s all there. Just assembled in a way I dont prefer.
I do like parts of this but on the whole it's a strange, haunting album. Ready, Able was my favorite track. It's possible this would click with more listens.
I like it, but it doesn't grab me. At best it's a 7 out of 10, maybe even just a 6, so 3 stars.
Meh
I didn't mind listening to it but nothing particularly stuck out for me either. May be worth another listen to see if it clicks next time.
Listened to it yesterday. Can't remember anything of it, so there was nothing remarkable, but also nothing bad.
It was alright
Listened to this album with a glass of wine while stargazing. It was alright, it felt like a good combo but the album didn’t do much for me which is a shame. It was a well done album but wasn’t anything special for me
Fine for a listen here and there but nothing grabs me in a powerful way
Meh. Didn’t grab me. Wasn’t annoying.
Get stoned 1st
pretty nice stuff, for the most part. I'd listen to it again but nothing good enough to make my favorites list
I have actually been looking for the song “Two Weeks” for a while but didn’t know how to search for it. That song is killer, but the rest of the album is a bit forgettable.
Honestly, I have no recollection of ever having listened to this, even though I know that I did on Friday. Apparently it wasn't that memorable, either in a good or bad way.
You know, it's a lot of sound. Deep, layered, multifaceted sounds. It's a vibe. A pleasant vibe. However, after Southern Point and Two Weeks - which a great - the rest of the album really just blends together into that vibe. I think musically it's strong, but I definitely don't hear the lyrics. Very mumble-y.
Solid indie album
3.5
Nice indie stuff but nothing particularly exciting.
The type of indie rock I like. But not my favourite presentation. A couple tracks off the “Abel” playlist.
5/10
Pretty standard 2010s indie pop. Takes itself too seriously. Two Weeks is the obvious standout.
nice
this is one of the more recent albums! a few good songs but overall not a GREAT album
Listened to only half coz it kept spacing me out. Was nice, like a dinner album I think. But the songs felt a little same-y.
Spacey, Emotional, Whiny
Not really my kind of music - but would be okay in the background. I personally rate it at the lower end of 3. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Two Weeks Rating: 3
Best songs: Two Weeks All We Ask Cheerleader It’s a 3.5. Will need to listen to more.
Some good songs but it drags quite significantly and didn’t hold my attention.
Nice and vibey, but not too standout. I really liked Two Weeks and While You Wait For The Others
I'm kinda liking the vibe of this album. Kinda dreamy and ethereal. Cheerleader was really good.
Ethereal and sometimes hard to digest, Grizzly Bear put a lot of thought into how this album is presented. Everyone knows Two Weeks for its soaring warmth and positivity, but a lot of the other songs illicit feelings of cold and confusion. A unique style that is not always my favorite, but is worth revisiting
Perfectly fine. Totally average. Wouldn’t need to search this out. 3/5
Enjoyable, nothing to write home about
Fine
Pretty good!
It's fine
Not a very exciting album. Wasn't bad though.
This sort of indie rock typically doesn’t resonate with me. I liked this album more than I initially thought I would, but I still think it lacks edge and other elements that might help distinguish it from other albums of the same genre/time period.
Not bad but nothing worthy of noting
very indie, -ready, able- best nice. two weeks een bekende
Very of the era, I see the similarities with fleet foxes and arcade fire. Good musicality
Lovely textured sounds if a bit too meandering in places. If I had listened to this at the time alongside Bon Iver and Arcade Fire I think they'd have been a favourite. I will in all likelihood never put this on again but I enjoyed it today. Bye Grizzly Bear. It was nice
Imagine Arcade Kings of Mumfords sounding ass. Absolute middle of the road fine.
This one grew on me.
Amazing how times and tastes change. Nostalgia for the early 2010's. Loved this when it came out, and still do, but this is now relegated to background music. 4 songs is all you need before moving on.
This album came out right when I was starting to get into Indie RockI may have listened to this when it came out; I remember it being on a lot of best of lists for 2009. Listening to it today, I can say I've definitely heard "Two Weeks" before. Listening to this today, I really enjoyed "Southern Point" and "Two Weeks," but the rest of the album didn't live up to those first two tracks. I think the thing that made me enjoy the first two tracks was the unique way they constructed their rhythms. "Ready, Able" and "About Face" were really good too. Overall, the album sounded pleasant, had some unique and interesting instrumentals, and had some good harmonies. The only song on the album that I really hated awas "Hold Still." However, I the biggest thing holding this album back from being great is that it just didn't stand out against its peers very much. The first two tracks really grabbed me, but the rest of the album just kind of coasted off of that momentum without creating any other unique or interesting sounds. I'm still glad I got the chance to listen to this, but it just wasn't remarkable.
Lovely layers.
Amidst all the racket there's some really creative and beautiful melodies. It gets a bit overwhelming in the final third but after two straight listens I'm definitely into this album and want to check out more of Grizzly Bear.
I thought this was interesting, it had really fun acapella moments and the drums were good on a few songs. No song in particular moved me or surprised me so I'd like to give it a 3.5-3.75
Some albums are boring because they do nothing to stand out. They stay in their chosen genre and choose their style of delivery and stick to that without standing put or doing anything special. These albums could have excellent songs and exquisite performances, and nobody would care, because they did nothing new or inventive. The other kind of boring is a rarer case, one that exists when the songs are pulling into all sorts of different directions, doing plenty of cool ideas bores. This is because all this cool stuff that should be memorable is delivered or written in an unexciting way, where you aren't brought into the world because the melodies, lyrics and performance doesn't match the inspiration it tries to conjure. Sadly this album, with its sonic disjuction and plaintive melodies, falls into the latter category. An album that seems to be doing something different at every corner, but only once ("Two Weeks") does it truly succeed.
It’s fine。why do all indie rock bands sound the same? 3/5
Quite good in some places, quite dull in others
The album was your typical indie rock album. I did not like most of the music except for a few songs. Not really a fan of this type of music and surprised it was in the list for Top 1001 Albums. Favorite song(s): "Two Weeks", "Cheerleader", "Ready, Able"
3.75
I wanted to be a manic pixie dream girl so badly in high school. I really did like this album, but I thought listening to this band, and others in the genre, made me "quirky" and "different"
Decent for background music
Two Weeks is the obvious banger, on this album, but I wasnt aware of the other bits from Grizzly. I enjoyed Ready, Able too.
OK. It's pretty decent. I approve. Although I'd like to be able to visit Veckatimest island at some point. I'm sure it'd only be a three hour tour.
This style definitely fits in my wheelhouse... an indie-folk-alternative vibe. However, i didn't find much that was actually that catchy... two weeks is the best, but more of the rest is just okay, a little boring at times.
A pretty decent indie-pop album. Production and songwriting is good, but a lot of these songs don't feel like they really go anywhere. Shields is the superior Grizzly Bear album.
"Two weeks" nawet kojarzę
Fanciful stuff. Leaning heavy into psychedelic while maintaining a soft folk sound gives Veckatimest a distinctly floaty feeling. The problem, more often than not, is to keep things interesting throughout. This can be difficult for Grizzley Bear. This album relies on vibes to keep it going. Rather than having particular moments worth remembering, Veckatimest welcomes you to enjoy the overall space it creates. Not a bad thing, not a great thing either. That being said, there are occasional times where the album feels like it's breaking through the atmosphere to deliver something big, but it's too far and few for me to discern.
The album sort of faded into the background for me. Good for listening to while working as nothing stood out as distracting. Though that also means nothing particularly stood out.
meh
first 2 songs were great but the rest was failed to stand out too much. was still good but nothing compared to the first 2 tracks.
Good album.
has some classics...
Cat: this was cool! Sounded great, very different even though some of it was different in a weird way. I’d revisit this and dig in more.
Southern Point, Two Weeks, Ready Able 3/5
Much better than I expected
Pleasant. But little more.
Was okay. Inoffensive. Slightly boring.
not bad. musically this album is pretty good. the lyrics on their own are pretty boring. but it works with the music i guess. not the most exciting album but like it’s definitely good to nap to or something.
Its the most indie rock middle of the road album, think if Coldplay did more indie, it's totally inoffensive and bland, but its not bad so it's 2.5 rounded up to a 3
A solid modern album from grizzly bear. This album has one of the most used songs in recent movies with one week. It is a great song and the rest of the album has trouble following it. Overall it’s decent modern indie music and overall it’s better than most of this list. Overall aside from one week the replay value isn’t too high but it’s a good album especially for 09 where it felt not too many bands were making this kind of indie music. 6.7/10
Two Weeks. Psychedelic folk, indie folk, chamber pop, indie.
very slow. knew one song and liked it
Southern Point could easily be the best song on the album right from the hop. I have heard Two Weeks several hundred times in my life, always fun to discover song names/artists after knowing the song forever. Another good alternative/folk/indie album. Unfortunately it became a bit ho-hum after the great start. Good album to follow yesterdays Follow the Dream. 3.5 stars with Southern Point, 3 stars without it.
That was an album. Nothing spectacular nothing bad
Album didn’t really click for me. Only track that stuck out was Dory.
Good stuff
I have no strong opinions either way
Not for me. Favorite Tracks: n/a 3/5
It was OK. Id go back, see if i like it more. A bit dull at times but nice overall.
Relaxing, ethereal music. Nothing really stood out as exceptional but maybe I need another listen
3.7 - Besides the gorgeous and glittery "Two Weeks", I'd shelved the rest of this album feeling at odds with Pitchfork's 9.0 review. Listening again, I appreciate the subtle arrangements and some bursts of oceanic color evoked by splashy percussions and jangly guitar strumming. And I like the unusual guitar-picking riffs. But, overall there's a lot of gray and beige on here and it quickly slunks to the background.
2.5
Some solid drums going on. But maybe a bit too long and forgettable in the end.
It was a pretty perfect three. It was almost something I quite liked, but it never quite did enough for me. I liked his voice. Not much else of note. My favourite song was About Face.
Mash up of the Beatles, Indie rock & some Beach Boys. Not my jam but pretty cool.
Good!
Good
Two Weeks. Psychedelic folk, indie folk, chamber pop, indie.
It was alright. Had a pretty good start, but the middle was pretty bland. Overall not terrible. Was thinking a low 4 initially, but it is probably closer to a high 3
Best Song: Two Weeks. Pleasant contrast between the main vocalist's voice and the higher, more lilting, backing choral voices. Worst Song: Hold Still. I actually really liked the vocals, but that guitar lick that interrupted was really jarring. Overall: Quietly interesting. Nice for rainy mornings and evenings reading.
An interesting one. Great instrumentation, very atmospheric soundscapes. Singer is hit-or-miss and so are the melodies. Some songs sound divine and others sound loud and badly produced. Overall I think the good slightly outweighs the bad here as the highs are quite high. Best song: Two Weeks
Vaguely pleasant but nothing really grabbed me, another pitchfork-y band that are okay but I can't understand the appeal. Runtime a bit too long as well. Okay for one listen.
The description of this sounded like I was going to really like it... Didn't mind the sound of this but none of it really grabbed me and it was very samey. Shouldn't think I'll be going back.
Very nice sound. I've heard this album a few times and am just now getting into it. I think it could be something I'd definitely listen to more in the future. Standouts: Two Weeks, Southern Point, All We ask Rating: 3.5/5
Good album but certainly know why I never listened to it again after it’s debut. It’s long and forgettable
Hooggewaardeerd album van softrockband Grizzly Bear. Tracklist is erg homogeen, wat ook voor het "bekende" nummer Two Weeks geldt. Kwalitatief ok, maar erg vergeetbaar. leukste nummer: I Live With You Album is vernoemd naar Veckatinest Island, MA. Een van de bandleden komt uit de Forbes familie die het naastgelegen eiland bezit.
Good but not particularly inspiring
I recognized the song two weeks but overall the album didn't have much variation and didn't hook me.
Sounds nice enough but it has no staying power outside the first 3-4 tracks. I've never been a fan of this indie folk thing and by the time this got released I was already tired of it. Not bad, not just something I'd ever recommend to someone, let alone put in a book about the 1001 most essentials albums of all-time.
I've seen worse generic stuff on this list. Yeah, this one is alright.
Very good album, I just dont think it's really one of the 1001 best albums of all time.
It's a nice album, great mood and sound. I can't understand the reason why it's on this list. Maybe it was a great success at the time, but I'm not sure this one will stand the test of time. It was a little bit generic and samey.
Not sure what these guys are, super nerdy, but also capable of moments that can move. Had the 1st track on my liked songs forever, but the rest of the album just washed over me
Have to relisten, but from the little I heard I enjoy it very indie 90s coming of age movie music which I’m realizing I enjoy.
Yeah, okay It was. Fine? Honestly, it was several hours ago. I remember liking it, then just not even noticing it. Towards the end (well, after the end) I thought, oh hey, I like this! Then realized the album had ended and Spotify just picked something it thought I'd like.
Two Weeks is an absolute classic, and I know that Grizzly Bear are really well-regarded artists in the modern psychedelic folk field, so I was excited to listen to this one...I didn't love it though. It's very pleasant, has a nice and consistent sound to it and I'm sure very technically well-structured and all, but I just found a lot of these songs kinda...boring. Pretty, but I don't know if I'd come back to it.
I was all set to really really like this album. The description really sounded like my kind of thing. The first song, "Southern Point," was good, but as for the whole thing, I got pretty bored with it. I even gave it some extra time to better connect with it, but I didn't get there and it's time to move on.
Not unpleasant but very bland for the most part. I doubt I would've finished it if I didn't "have to." I'm glad I stuck it out because the last two tracks were quite striking, elevating the overall experience.
I was surprised to discover that I had purchased this album not long after its release. I was also surprised that I didn’t recognize anything about this. I’m not sure if I ever loved this, but today I found it sort of nice, but I can see why I maybe listened to this once and then forgot about it. Just really didn’t click much with me. I don’t mind it but don’t really love it either.
This is different, and interesting because of that. I thought round 2 and 3 of listening to it would sell me and I'd have a new favorite in the rotation. That didn't quite happen, I think because despite everything that's happpening, there's not much that stays with me that I want to hear again. The exception is, \"While You Wait For the Others\"...super cool song. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
Veckatimest is a bit of a mixed bag - there are certainly parts of it where it collapses in on itself under the weight of its own self-importance, where it's not quite as clever as it thinks it is, but there are also some real highs. Two Weeks is great, but doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the album, and While You Wait For The Others is also good. It's really nicely put together, the vocal arrangements are good (feels like Fleet Foxes without quite as good vocals but with much better instrumentation), but it doesn't really grip me for the most part. 3/5.
Has something of a Jeff Buckley vibe without actually ever getting very good, instantly forgettable
"Two weeks" est sympa, "While you wait for the others" a de bons moments. J'y reviendrais peut être
Dreamy indie rock from the late 2000s isn't really my thing, but I can appreciate it it for what it is. That's the beauty of this site, though - you listen to stuff that isn't your cup of tea.
I love Indie from this era (formative music for me) but have never been able to really love Grizzly Bear. Decent stuff but just doesn't grab me the way other similar artists do. 3.5/5
Nothing stood out as good, nothing stood out as bad.
Two Weeks. Psychedelic folk, indie folk, chamber pop, indie.
2,5. It all kinda sounds the same.
I like it, I own it, but it is just fine rather than glorious
3/5 I could not figure this one out. There were some interesting parts, some rhythms I liked but overall I couldn't get used to the style nor could I figure out what the genre was. It was a neutral: meh.
Not terrible but not great either. Maybe 3 is generous, but I don't think I was overly irritated with this one. The yawnfest continues...
Wasn’t enough there for this to stand out for me.
genre defining
It's an album I've heard a lot. I do like it, but I find it hard to get too excited about it, despite the hype it received at the time.
As catchy as a pop album. As adventurous as an indie rock album. And as intimate yet boring as a folk album. Pretty nice.
Perfectly good listen, with nice vocals and harmonies. Not quite sure if a top 1001 however!
Very hit-or-miss
A bit on the precious side, but with undoubted high points. There. That's a bland a generic enough statement, isn't it?
It's like an alternate universe beach boys with more Internet rythyms, and less melody
I like Grizzly Bear. I don't know why this album would be considered on this list of albums that must be heard, as there are other bands with better albums in this genre.
I think it started off quite strong but petered out very quickly. Potentially it was too long as well. The other half is not memorable at all and I wasn’t even sure if anything was playing at times Saved tracks: Two Weeks, All We Ask, Fine For Now, While You Wait For The Others
Yeah, I can get into this, even though it is very formulaic late aughts indie which I don't normally go for. They remind me of a band I really like, Guster, who I wish were on the list because they're quite special. I didn't think I'd know any of this one, but Two Weeks I've definitely heard. That song got its moment in the sun, that's for sure. Overall it is inoffensive, innocuous, fine.
You have to respect that this band had two albums in the top 10 of the US, done on their own experimental terms. Then the dude takes a break and quits the band to become a therapist. I love weird stories like that. Too bad the album only moderately holds up over time. While this album fits perfectly in the late 2000s and early 2010s, it's lost a lot of its luster years on. Stand out tracks are "Two Weeks", "Ready, Able", and "About Face".
Dobar album, daleko najbolja stvar je jebiga Two Weeks. Vraćao sam se na ovaj album, ali svaki put se iznenadim kako ga nikako preslušat do kraja, kao da mi se ne da uopće slušat album.
Better than expected but I still blame these cunts for Pomplamoose's existence.
Enjoyable to listen to at Trader Joe's. I recognized Two Weeks from a commercial. Upbeat and fun.
I enjoyed it!
Mellow-ish post-pop for those that dig that sort of thing.
Solid indie rock album. Lots of enjoyable moments. Nothing too out of the ordinary.
Hard listening album. I guess I am intellectually below the level of indie rock music.
It was a good album, but more something I'd put on as background music while drinking coffee or working on homework than a main experience.
I enjoyed most of the album, only listened to it once though. Most of the songs were enjoyable some were a bit meh.
I think I would appreciate it more if i gave it a few more listens. I enjoyed the vocals and production on here. Not unique to what I've hear but still really nice. Reminded me at parts of James Blake and Radiohead.
This album started out strongly, then quickly became everything I hate about Indie music, and then ended strongly. So I guess overall I liked it. Favorite track: While You Wait For The Others
Never heard this before, but it was pretty good.
I’d never heard of Grizzly Bear until today. The album art and the strange text layout does have me a little intrigued. I’m not exactly sure what to expect from this, but am eager to find out. Songs I already knew: None Favourites: Two Weeks, Foreground This album was very up and down for me. The good songs were very good, the bad songs were very forgettable. I did like the vocal style very much - sad, soft vocals do tend to be enjoyable to my ears. The music was best when it was kept minimal, and tended to counterproductively become less interesting as more instrumentation was added. Overall, I would say I enjoyed the album, and yet I’m doubting if I’ll ever be returning to listen again.
Have listened to this album but not enough, it's a nice one but I don't find it that cohesive. 3 stars
Well-crafted, nuanced album that can swing from sweeping orchestral to jaunty pop to hauntingly psychedelic. I started out very much not in the mood for this, but actually ended up enjoying it a lot. I'd like to come back and listen to it more, because this feels like an album that improves on repeated listening. Fave Songs: Cheerleader; Foreground; Two Weeks; About Face; Ready, Able; Dory
very calm, kinda ethereal. Mood specific
An album of its time, I think, like a number of others from around the same period; Fleet Foxes et cetera.
Oh yeah I remember that song plus other songs which made me forget that song again
Fun story: In college I briefly toyed with the idea of becoming a journalism major. I decided to go and work at my college's newspaper when they announced they needed new team members, in order to test the waters. It was so exciting! The newsroom was not unlike what I had seen in the movies. Everyone was running around and trying to meet deadlines. I very quickly was given my first assignment: covering the Grizzly Bear concert that was coming to town on Friday night. What luck! I wasn't just going to be a journalist, but a MUSIC JOURNALIST. I was going to go to a FREE CONCERT and also GET TO MEET THE BAND. The road to my future seemed paved before me. I excitedly grabbed my new credentials, and checked out a camera in order to take pictures. Back in my dorm, I hurriedly sent out messages to friends and loved ones. Mom! I'm going to be a MUSIC JOURNALIST and I've already gotten my first assignment! Fast forward to Friday night and I rushed down to the theater. Maybe I could get some pictures of the band setting up; perhaps catch the final sound check. At the door I was told to go away. "No, you don't understand, I'm with THE PAPER" "Where's your ticket?" "There should be one reserved for me, since I'm with THE PRESS" "There isn't a ticket. Go away" ".... can I... buy a ticket? Maybe they'll reimburse me" "No, the show is sold out" "Can I... come in and interview the band? Look, here are my credentials" "No, they don't want to talk to the newspaper. Go away" The next day I went back to the newspaper and got chewed out for not covering the assignment I was given. So that's the story of how Grizzly Bear ended my nascent journalism career. Anyway, this album is fine. Fleet Foxes does the same schtick better.
Really solid indie album. Foreground is living in my head at the moment and it refuses to budge, but the rest wasn't extremely memorable to me for whatever reason. Still enjoyed it though.
Sehr cooler Indiesound. Manche experimentelle Elemente haben mich allerdings zum Skippen gebracht, weil es nervig wurde.
Highlights: All We Ask, Fine For Now.
Doet me wat denken aan een mix van Flaming lips, Fleet Foxes en Arcade Fire. Leuke muziek, maar had er meer van verwacht
Indie rock. Kind of interesting. Some good songs. Free for now.
Interessante plaat.
decent
Classic indie album, circa 2010. Some great/nostalgic tracks on here but also a handful of boring songs.
This album was fine, some good vibes.
Rather forgettable mumble core - bar the first two tracks which somehow stick well. But it tapers off rather steeply from the third song onwards. It’s the last gasp of noughties indie.
Sgt. Pet Sounds Satanic Airplane's Request
Started off pretty cool, the fish song was weird but catchy, and by the end I kinda lost interest a bit.
One hit wonder
I liked a few tracks (Two Weeks esp), but the rest was just aggressively average.
love two weeks did not know who made it. always heard the song in a commercial tho
Coffee shop music
Good initial response, I like the odd-randomness. It's quite ethereal and really hard to classify.
I actually never listened to Grizzly Bear except know a couple songs. Was pleasantly surprised by how this started out but then got kind of meh as it continued.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a great album, but for its genre. Not what I expected from 1001 albums 3/5
Pluss for kult bandnavn og relativt vanskelig albumnavn. Minus for litt rar start. Two weeks er jo visstnok deres mest strømmede sang og svingte bra så jeg skal ikke være vrang. Kul vibe, men ikke helt innertier for min del.
Not a bad album at all. Pretty pleasant modern alternative rock. 3.5 rounded down because I have no idea what makes it relevant enough to be on this list.
It was fine. Won't listen again though.
Two weeks is a great song but I was otherwise unswayed by the rest of the album, though it does possess some Jeff Buckley feel which I was unaware of before this listen. Talented band just not particularly my cup of tea.
good folk-rock
No es mi estilo. Aburrido.
Dare I say it....but OTT production?
sad and somber. not a good mood for me at this time in my life
Unique fusion of prog rock, indie rock, and alternative in one. Very musical and pleasant to the ear.
Quiet, melodic, interesting. Reminisce of Fleet Foxes, and Tame Impala.
I recognised Two Weeks but apart from that Grizzly Bear have been on my 'heard good things, must check them out one day' list for the past ten years. It took me a while to warm to this album but I enjoyed it plenty by the end. While You Wait For The Others was my highlight. None of it felt completely new to me - it reminded me a lot of how Wild Beasts sounded around that time (I think Wild Beasts win that fight btw - there are more of them after all, but admittedly it depends on the type of beast). Also, the album kind of meandered at times in the middle. But like I say, my overriding feeling was this was a pleasant listen. 3.5 stars
This started out well but eventually all of the songs started to sound the same
Alternative pop/rock with some experimentation sprinkled in. The result is a mixed album consisting of a couple of OK and some more not-so-OK tracks. Nothing really stands out in either direction - there is no really horrible song here, but nothing is particualarly good either. 2.5/5
a roller-coaster ride
This was decent. Sounds like these guys were influenced by Jeff Buckley and Arcade Fire and in turn might have influenced Tame Impala but I didn’t really hear anything in here that would make me want to listen to this album again. “While You Wait for the Others” was the clear standout track for me.
Lots of interesting sound, but more vibey than tuneful. "Two Weeks," the most tuneful, earworms in the worst way. Few of the songs advance far beyond the premise, which feels workably arty though also cold and hypothetical. Thought this record was overhyped upon release and still think so.
The definition of ok
This isn't normally my thing, but I really enjoyed this album. Fine for Now and While You Wait for the Others were standout tracks in my opinion. In general, I just liked most of the melodies and the simplistic-sounding recording. It was very pleasant. I can't quite get to 4 stars on this, but it's a solid 3+
Mellow, not something I would normally listen to. Whimsically melodic, hints of Steely Dan and Radiohead.
Fine indie music.
Alright album
American landfill indie, like The Strokes' younger brothers listened to too much Editors and Doves (and not enough Elbow or Radiohead) before being let loose in a studio to produce their own album. Good, but not great, and not a band I am likely to explore further
This should 100% be right in my wheelhouse since I love this kinda music but this just wasn't scratching that itch. I found the album a little too long and a little too repetitive. 3.5/5
tema la taille du retard j'ai du écouter sous la douche résultat c'était pas ouf
This was delightfully just okay. I’d never heard of this band but somehow I recognized “Two Weeks.” Not sure how. The songs on this album are a little too slow for me, but I did really like “Foreground.”
Tää on ollu mulle aina vähän pettymys, kun Shields on niin kova (5/5). On tässäkin pari loistavaa biisiä, mutta aika paljon vähän teennäistä taiteilua. Tosin Shields on ihan luonnollinen jatkumo tästä.
Tykkään Grizzly Bearista, mutta Shields on musta tätä parempi levy. 3/5 varsin jees, voisi olla vähemmän pehmeää.
It is a good album. Fairly chill with some interesting bits
Tense and dramatic, with some quite engaging ideas presented, but very little tunefulness or resolution. Too arty by half.
not bad but ive seen better.
Interesting for the first 2 songs, then a deep and strange valley with some not-so-good things that made me think what was happening, and finally a calm end with a very beautiful melody. My definition of a 3 stars album. I like to receive things from the 2000s that I didn't know anything about.
Indie intéressant par moments mais un peu chiant quand même Prefs: Southern Point, Two Weeks, Ready, Able, About Face, While You Wait For the Others Moins pref: Cheerleader
03/28/2022 Classic indie; with really only one great song (Two Weeks, duh). A product of its time already. The back half takes a bit of patience to get through, if only due to how strong the opening few songs are.
It’s a totally fine modern indie record. Definitely relies on its super catchy single.
That was nice.
I like this album but I don't love it.
A bit too mellow for my taste. The hit on this album did not match the tone of the rest of the album.
Sonically this sounds like Phil Spector recorded music for goth funerals. It's all slow and ponderous and boomy and gloomy. The instrumentation was complex and interesting, I will say. It's okay as background music, but when my work got a little dull this became a terrible soundtrack - the mournful energy made this a big wet blanket.
bland indie melancholy. every song is overlong and boring.
