lovee!
I’ve never listened to this entire album, and I can see why it’s a top album for a lot of people. I really enjoyed Sloop John B and I’m waiting for the day. The vocals and instruments sound insane for this to have been made in the 60’s.
ai meu deus é o album do wouldnt it be nice FAVS (top 3): wouldnt it be nice, dont talk (put your head on my shoulder), here today mençoes honrosas: thats not me; im waiting for the day; god only knows; caroline, no compraria o vinil: talvez os caras sabem muito, gostei bastante e acho q a voz deles ficam tao harmonicas que é uma delicia de ouvir. o album abre mt bem e fecha bem divertido com literais pet sounds!!! KKKKKK nota final: 4/5
Pretty catchy songs throughout and was entertained the whole time. they have such a unique sound special to them that I really appreciate.
It's not a 5* unfortunately but it is a very very good album (4.5*?)
Perfect background album
nice upbeat instrumentals
Попали… Началось
It’s very classic and i can appreciate it for what it is however it just doesn’t feel complete in a way? i’d love to sample some tracks for something though
Pleasantly surprised, this was not the stereotypical hit sound of the Beach Boys that I was expecting. Much more layered and interesting to me and understand why it tops a lot of album lists.
Album I would play when going on a date to a petting zoo.
Неродной брат-близнец Сержанта Пеппера. Барокко.
It was good- but not exactly something I’d listen to. I saved ONE song only.
Solid listen. My favourite songs are That's Not Me and Don't Talk. Will definitely come back to it often!
The lyrics in some of the songs are so much sadder than I ever knew. God Only Knows always makes me cry. Harmonies are rich and the music is lush.
Very chill/relaxing. Feels nostalgic and comforting.
I had higher expectations for this album. Had to still give it a 4 for one of the best songs ever; “God Only Knows”.
Can't deny the incredible production and indelible impact. I thought that I would be giving this a 5 star without a second thought. The problem is that I'd rather read about how important this album is than listen to it. Love - Pet Sounds (kind of wish the whole album was instrumentals), Sloop John B Like - God Only Knows Take or leave the rest 5 star for influence and place on list, 2 star listen for me. I'll call it 4 3/1001+
Massive orchestral work, offers us glimpses of a perpetual ocean before whipping us back to the minutiae of perfectionism. Stationary, self-harming, psychedelic, Spectorsound ect
7.9/10. Enjoyable listen.
Innovative and inspiring in its era. The original concept album that inspired Sgt. Pepper's and therefore all others. a few all-time classic hits, but overall a great album. Pitchfork: 9.4 Rolling Stone: Top 500 albums #2 Best Songs Wouldn't it Be Nice Sloop John B God Only Knows
eu ouviria isso por livre e espontânea vontade
I couldn't care less about the Beach Boys. Yes it is good, I think objectively the production is top notch, but I just can't get into the Beach Boys.
The composition across the album is fantastic, but the vocal layering or reverb effect is a bit much.
FUCKING LOVEEEEEEE AYEEEE love that it started with a song i knew it was great
Reminds me of Roxana. Exactly the type of album I needed this morning.
Some truly transcendent work here
a very sweet album
Felt like a daydream.
quite chill, wouldn’t describe it as rock. pretty unique, good studying music 😊
It is a bit slow for modern days. But nevertheless I enjoyed the album. It was already part of my collection.
Honestly great album! I enjoy The Beach Boys and I liked this a lot.
I didn't register but everybody knows this album is good..God Only Knows and Caroline No are top-ehelon
geat album
Very nice 60's vibe. I already knew some songs but some of them aren't my vibe. The album seems to be very happy, however I didn't check the lyrics so I might be wrong. Overall I would listen to it again when I'm in a good mood.
i really liked this album- how can you not? it's the beach boys! i knew a few songs but my favourite one was you still believe in me or i know there's an answer:)
This ain't your Cars, Girls, Surfin' Beach Boys. This is barely thinly veiled cry for help. I can't believe anyone knowing Brian Wilson's mental health issues would listen to this & say "He's a shiny beacon of mental health." That being said, it's sophisticated, lovelorn & just a guy trying to figure himself out in this world. While also being a world famous rock star. He's homesick, lonely & seeing his life & mind change around him. It's a bit depressing at times. Still brilliant.
GOATed album, has so many bangers. Mostly feel good music. Classic stuff everyone here was brought up on
This album is a great example of what makes this activity fun. There was a lot more to this record than I expected. I probably wouldn’t have ever given it much of a chance otherwise, but it was very enjoyable.
Dobrý: Wouldn't it be nice Sloop John B God only knows I know theres an answer
First half was okay, second half was incredible
I have to be in the right mood to listen to these chums. Today I was in the right mood, but let's try to make it a less lighthearted boys, it tries my patience
I'm permanently gonna be biased in favor of this album because Would It Be Nice was the first dance at my brother's wedding. Also it's often cited as one of the first concept albums. The positivity and happiness of the California sound is refreshing in a world that's always so focused on being clever and cynical. Anyway I love a few tracks here. Sloop John B, Put Your Head on My Shoulder. But I'm kinda surprised at how well this album works without any memorable tracks (except the first). I don't know how often I'd come back to the full album though, so I'll leave it at 4 stars.
Classic album
This was really nice! It feels like a peak of this genre in the 60s, which seems to make sense given its influence? Starts off with the very good and classic Wouldn't It Be Nice, and then to me it's okay-pleasant for a while. But then Let's Go Away For Awhile comes in, a track with a novel mood for the album and signalling a change to some great stuff! I could see this potentially being a 5 at some point in the future, but for right now I'm just not as interested in that first half.
I first heard this album 234 days ago, and kind of hated it for its overly-sugary sweet vocals. Ever since, I've kept seeing it praised as one of the best albums ever, heavily disagreed, and so I kept returning to it trying to see what everyone sees in it. I think by sheer exposure over that period, I've come to really like Pet Sounds -- though I still fail to 'get' it in the way its devotees do. So for my rating here, at this point the album has technically entered my frequent rotation, and I imagine that no music I truly dislike would keep me coming back so often. Maybe I should just fully embrace the 4. Standouts: Wouldn't It Be Nice • Don't Talk (Pour Your Head On My Shoulder) • Let's Go Away For A While • Pet Sounds
I mean listen, there is a lot of great songs on here, very experimental and each song is unique, but I don't think I can give it a 5/5. If I could, I would rate a 4.5 out of 5 but I just don't think it had the WOW factor that it would need to push it up. I can totally respect that this was a crazy influential album, and still is, but saying that it's one of the best albums of all time, let alone the best I think is a little far fetched. God Only Knows and Wouldn't It Be Nice my favs.
Favorite track: God Only Knows
Cool
Ok so let me get the negatives out of the way real fast. This album has an annoying amount of releases. And there doesn’t seem to be a consensus on which is THE version to listen to. For example I thought the way to go was listening to the version that has both mono/stereo versions, but the problem with that one is that it has almost all the songs doubled up which makes the tracklist super confusing. But both the stereo version and mono version are missing songs, in particular my favorite song on the album (hang on to your ego). So that my biggest problem with the album, there are a few songs that don’t blow me away or hold my attention but for the most part the album is stellar as always. It’s hard to go wrong with a BB album because they always do specific things perfectly, like harmonies, adorably innocent song writing themes, and production quality. And this might be one of their best albums on top of that. Definitely worthy of this list!
Not sure what’s stopping it from being a five.
Loved it
The innocence of this album is endearing…I like this more than the later Beach Boys work. God Only Knows is personal top 50 for sure. 4/5
Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys is a landmark album in the history of music. I once heard somewhere, I can't recall WHERE but someone said somewhere that the Beach Boys managed to create the sound of sunlight via intricate instrumentation (provided by the Wrecking Crew,) and that just hits it on the top of the head. Like I just said before, its instrumentation helps give the album its own character, triumphant, big, bright, which is quite juxtaposed by melancholy lyrics, but it manages to work. A few of the pieces of music on this album sound like straight movie incidental music, which is quite quirky for a rock album. It's tragic Brian Wilson lost his mind in the process of trying to out-do this album, which would've been a nigh-impossible task. Highlight Song/s: Wouldn't It Be Nice, I'm Waiting For The Day and I Know There's An Answer
nice
Not my thing but they were the best at it
Me likey! Great arrangements and production! I really love "God Only Knows." Arguably the greatest love song of all time.
Took me too long to realise it was looping, but a fun ride along the way.
Songs are all short and sweet. Nothing individually really jumped out at me but the whole album is definitely rated high for a reason
Classic beach boys
A little bit goes a long way
Favourite track: God Only Knows
objectively good but i’ve never been huge on the beach boys
Just not my style of music, but I can rate it well because musically it's excellent. Pet Sounds is a good instrumental I hadn't heard before.
I feel like this album is held up as the best by the Beach Boys but it's pretty repetetive and boring to me. Maybe their vocals just sound the same on every song which kinda makes every song sound the identical to me. It's a fine album just not for me.
It has influenced generations and is widely included in discussions about the greatest album of all time. Justifiably so as it is an incredible marvel of studio production and songwriting. The performances are memorable and the songs are timeless. A true classic that belongs on the list of albums you must hear before you die.
The Flaming Lips embody that hopeful, melancholic sound that was everywhere in the early 2000s. This album definitely made an impact on me when I heard it for the first time.
Is this the one where Brian Wilson went crazy and had an orchestra of goats to form the perfect album? 7/10
Their biographies are fucking wild
Id like to have it on vinyl.
Fine
Overall enjoyed this album! The Beach Boys have such a classic and nostalgic sound, so this was a fun listen.
Honestly as soon as I saw this I knew what I wanted to score it. Didn’t really need to listen to the album seeing as I had listened to it a couple days prior just randomly at work. But with that being said I still gave it a listen and it was still just as good.
Banger.
I mean, it's Pet Sounds. It's a masterpiece in production alone. Brian Wilson at the top of his game. Now is it an album I'd have on regularly? No. It just doesn't fulfill my musical hungers. But it absolutely belongs here and was happy to play today just to remind myself just how good it is.
As a longtime Beach Boys hater, I liked this way more than I though I would. The lead singer's voice is still a little grating, but every song is just so catchy. Favorite Songs: Here Today
4/5
Beautiful album, definetly earned its place on the list. Some of the songs feel even too cluttered with the "wall of sound" style. I do like the harmonies though. Some of the songs sound christmassy - propably because of the flutes, tambourines and chimes. I was wondering why Sloop John B sounds so familiar, but found out it's used as football chant!
This record is considered something of a landmark achievement in music production and songwriting, and while I'm not really willing to swoon over it like some folks, it is pretty great. It sounds like a Phil Spector record; it has a kind of "wall of sound" vibe, but dialed back a bit. I love the instrumentation and even the songs that don't immediately grab my attention through pop, vocal hooks, well, they still offer a pleasant listening experience. Beach Boys and Brian Wilson have always kind of been standouts for vocal harmonies and this record has a ton of that too. It's hard for me to think of the Beach Boys as a "rock band" like I think Brian Wilson thought of them because they've always lacked any sort of edge for me, but they're kind of their own thing that works. I like Pet Sounds pretty good and it sounds like a ton of meticulous work was poured into it. I'll probably never be the biggest Beach Boys fan in the world, but what they do, they do really well, and it's pleasant enough to listen to even if I'll never really spin this record a bunch of times on my own. 4/5
I like this album even if I have to admit that the people claiming that it's one of the best things ever are overrating it. The best thing about it is the production. Very layered with some truly beautiful progression, and also very unique for its times. Wouldn't It Be Nice is amazing of course, timeless song. I'm Waiting for the Day is a personal favorite of mine, the arrangements are just so undeniably stunning. Many songs have those incredible psychedelic textures that are very ahead of its time. My main problem is that it's a bit inconsistent, with some songs just feeling kinda average to me. I'm talking about songs like You Still Believe in Me or Don't Talk, which kind of pale in comparison to the way more interesting songs around them. I don't think that all of the instrumental songs are necessary either, even if I do appreciate them.
I've learned more recently about the Beach Boys from listening to Andrew Hickey, so I no longer think of their music as stuck-in-1960 teenage fluff oldies. This has some great stuff on it, especially the wall-of-sound songs. And I think it will reward repeat listening; I'll definitely put it on again. "I'm Waiting for the Day" is my favorite, and I'd never heard it before. Rounding down from 4.5 because I don't like "Wouldn't It Be Nice," and that's the biggest hit here.
01) Wouldn't It Be Nice - 7,5 02) You Still Believe in Me - 8,0 03) That's Not Me - 7,5 04) Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) - 7,0 05) I'm Waiting for the Day - 7,0 06) Let's Go Away for Awhile - 7,0 07) Sloop John B - 8,5 08) God Only Knows - 10,0 09) I Know There's an Answer - 8,0 10) Here Today - 7,5 11) I Just Wasn't Made for These Times - 7,5 12) Pet Sounds - 8,0 13) Caroline, No - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,77 (78/100) Current ranking: 249/702
Very good, worthy of a place on the list although it’s not a 5 star in my eyes
A classic for sure but not a personal favorite. It doesn't quite have the same timeless feel of my favorite 60's classics.
Steel guitar stones! Salt of the earth! F-yes! Love this album always have but haven’t listened to it end to end in decades!
Already listened
Fantastic album. I was recently at the beach and wish I had this then.
What hasn't been said about the beach Boys and pet Sounds in particular? Nothing more that I can say really
Wow. A full album called Pet Sounds and not a single woof, meow, or tweet. Though in all seriousness this wasn't what I expected of the Beach Boys. The first song sure, but as the album went on it definitely lost it's "beach pop" sound and moved into something much more complex. Actually until today I thought God Only Knows was a Beatles track.
Strong start and end……
It is a combination of pop/jazz with a ton of orchestral music woven in. It showcases why Brian Wilson is considered to be one of the greatest songwriters in history.
This song is #2 on the rolling stones top 500. Do I think this is the second best album ever made? Absolutely not. Do I think it's the second most influential? Also no. However, what I do know is that Wouldn't it be nice is an all timer and a great way to open an album, and every song gives you something to really key in on whether it be the vocals, instrumentals, or lyrics.
Pretty GOAT album historically, still holds up pretty well these days. A few of the instrumentals feel repetitive to my zero attention span zoomer palate. Wouldn't IT Be Nice is undefeated, and I like that he also gets morose on the pop album with I Just Wasn't Made For These Times.
I've listened to this album a lot over the years. To be honest I have never really got it as an album. There are a few absolute classic slices of pop perfection (in particular Sloop John B and Wouldn't it be Nice) but a lot of it sort of washes over me.
It's got some hype this album. Give it 5 stars for its influence. Some good tunes, some very 50s pop sounding Beach Boys songs.
This is a great album, with interesting production choices. Obviously more novel at the time of its release, it’s still a fun listen. God Only Knows is one of the best songs ever written, so this is a strong 4 stars.
After I had Brian Wilsons album Smile I was put off from the idea of the beach boys, but this was a great album executed amazingly!
Musically really nice. favorite tracks: I'm waiting for the day, let's go away for a while.
a nice easy album to listen to 3.5
Bra men lite carried av Wouldn’t it be Nice och God Only Knows
Hade väldigt höga förväntningar, men utöver hitsen jag redan hade koll på (och verkligen gillar!) stack det inte riktigt ut. Därför "bara" en 4a.
The better known songs were the best by The Beach Boys, and the rest was satisfying. I am a little surprised this is considered such a revolutionary album, but it was a pleasant listen all around.
4.5
Great album, ahead of its time.
I mean yea, it’s one of the albums
Influential sure but not a 5 any more
By far, The Beach Boys' best album, there are really no low points in the album. Their best hits, mixed with slightly experimental and polished album tracks that are worth the hype. One of the best 60s albums, and it deserves the goat that lies on the front cover.
I may have had too high of expectations going in knowing this is a lot of people’s favorite album but really only two standout songs. The harmonies and musical arrangements are all very precise clearly thought out but not personally a 5 star album, going with 4 but honestly could be a 3
Pet Sounds is an album I've tried to love over the years, but it's never fully clicked for me. While I respect its legendary reputation and understand its impact, I don't feel the same connection to it that so many others do. There’s no denying the album's technical brilliance. The harmonies are gorgeous, and the intricate production is a testament to Brian Wilson's genius. And for an album nearly six decades old, the mix holds up surprisingly well, even if the percussion can occasionally sound a little thin. Yet, despite its artistry, I often find the album to be a bit one-paced. With "Pet Sounds" it feels like The Beach Boys traded their joyous, "Fun, Fun, Fun" sun-soaked sound for something more sombre and less engaging. That said, three truly exceptional songs manage to pull the entire album to a four-star rating, and one of them, to me, is "Sloop John B." I know, I'm a musical heathen! "Sloop John B." is often criticized as an outlier on "Pet Sounds", but for me its bright harmonies and spirited feel offer a welcome burst of life and energy that the rest of the album sometimes lacks. Four stars. Side One 1. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (5/5) 2. "You Still Believe in Me" (3/5) 3. "That's Not Me" (3/5) 4. "Don't Talk" (3/5) 5. "I'm Waiting for the Day" (4/5) 6. "Let's Go Away for Awhile" (4/5) 7. "Sloop John B" (5/5) Side Two 1. "God Only Knows" (5/5) 2. "I Know There's an Answer" (3/5) 3. "Here Today" (3/5) 4. "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" (3/5) 5. "Pet Sounds" (3/5) 6. "Caroline, No" (3/5) Total - 47 Average - 3.62 101/1001
I can't really enjoy Beach Boys music because of high-pitched vocals. Album is good but I don't find it as music gem. It still sounds for my kind of overrated. But maybe I can't truly get the main point.
Amazing all around. Great history. Pairs well with bike rides on hot days and picnics.
4/5 stars… classic
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background The Beach Boys always worked better for me as a greatest hits band over an album band, but there is indeed a lot to love about this album. One of my concert highlights is catching Brian Wilson on his Pet Sounds Tour where he played the album in its entirety (as well as a cover of Barenaked Ladies Brian Wilson)
Beautiful harmonies and songs
This album has 2 undeniable classics on it. This was definitely solid gold for the average sock hop enjoyer. Not big into all the harmonies. Quality album. 4 stars.
It's a classic for a good reason. No album collection would be complete without it.
A classic. RIP Brian Wilson.
hermoso album y con una linda letra, me sorprendio aunque no se que esperaba pero definitavamente esto no
Ah, a classic. I really enjoyed this album. It was poppy, light, and fun.
Just a great pop album with ground breaking production.
aunque dudando del 3.5
Classic album and influenced so many other bands. Brilliant
It gave a beachy vibe. Was nice to listen to it. 👍
I was really excited to listen to this album, but I already heard some of the songs before. I love the beach boys and I heard great things about the album. I wasn't disappointed, it was moody and melodic and great to listen to. I feel I have to give this album a deeper dive next listen, but for now it definitely caught my attention. Favourite song on the album God only Knows the album rating 4.4/5
Absolute classic. Would be on my 101 list, never mind 1001.
Sometimes you just need some happy music.
scale: 1 - instaskip, 2-meh can be skipped/reaches point to skip, 3 -nothing wrong/easy listen/not seeking out, 4 - would listen to again, 5 - must listen Wouldn’t it be nice- top marks on both scales 7/5 You still believe in me-3 That’s not me-3 Don’t talk- more like don’t listen, 2 I’m waiting for the day- 4 Let’s go away for a while- 4, ethereal Sloop John b- 5, unironically slaps God only knows- 3 I know there’s an answer- 4 Here today- 4 I just wasn’t made for these times- 2 Pet sounds- 4 Caroline, no- 3
scale: 1 - skipping if heard it again/actually skipped it 2- meh can be skipped/reaches point to skip 3 -nothing wrong/easy listen/not seeking out 4 - would listen to again 5 - must listen Wouldn't It Be Nice - 6 You Still Believe in Me - 3 That's Not Me - 3 Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) - 3 I'm Waiting for the Day - 4 Let's Go Away for Awhile - 3 Sloop John B - 5 God Only Knows - 6 I Know There's an Answer - 3.5 Here Today - 4 I Just Wasn't Made for These Times - 3 Pet Sounds - 4.5 Caroline, No - 3.5 So very close to giving this a 5/5
A classic. But is it truly timeless?
First half is rather uninteresting, but starting at the instrumental Let’s Go Away for Awhile it gets interesting.
Contains one of the best tracks of all time; “God only Knows” It would get a 3 just for that. The rest of the songs are nice and all. I can see why it’s peoples’ favourite album but it’s too restricted to say it’s perfect.
Brian Wilson is a mastermind and Pet Sounds is a work of art.
You know this one
I had very high expectations coming into this album and all I can say I’m pretty disappointed. Don’t get me wrong it was still a great album but nowhere near one of the greatest things I’ve heard. There wasn’t anything that really stood out to me other than maybe the vocals which I’ll give them props too. But also there wasn’t anything I disliked either without just pulling hairs at it. My favourites were Wouldn’t It Be Nice, God Only Knows and Caroline No. Overall I have mixed emotions with some songs being like 6 to a 10 so I’m going to give this 8.6/10 4.3/5
cool
Good but old
Great Album! Ahead of its time, some stand out songs, some that fade into the BG
Nostalgic for me and honestly so magical. Only a tiny bit weak sometimes here and there but thats just me
Damn good album. Beach Boys are always a little limited in range, but this album is as consistent as it gets.
A beautiful album. I finally get it. There is no doubt that this album was influential, taking the production techniques started by Specter to a new level. The layering of sounds, from the vocal harmonies to the instrumentation was way ahead of its time. One of the reasons I joined this project was to listen to and appreciate how albums influenced music that follows and this album certainly delivers on this criterion. I say all of this because contextualization often helps me appreciate older music at a deeper level. Part of the reason is that when albums are highly influential, as this one was, it is easy to forget that the reason the sounds can seem like so much else you have heard was precisely because of its influence on the music that followed. Without contextualization it is impossible understand just how innovative Pet Sounds was at the time. Again, this is beautiful music, no doubt. I especially enjoyed the interplay of the vocalizations with instrumentation that superficially seems simply, but is actually complex. My listen for this review might be the first time the Beach Boys was unlocked for me. Perhaps this was a better understanding the context of the time. However, I think it has more to do with a deeper listen to the complexity and beauty of the arrangements, which allowed me to see the album as something more than a pop album. Nevertheless, I intend to listen to later Beach Boys music again with these new ears.
Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys is like sitting on the porch at sunset, thinking about life, love, and all the weird in-between feelings. Odd little sound effects, and harmonies so good they almost don’t sound real. It’s warm, emotional, and surprisingly experimental, but still easy to just sink into. Final Ranking: Lyrics: 7/10 Instrumentals: 6/10 Originality: 8/10 Album Cohesion and Flow: 8/10 Vocals: 9/10 – Borderline 10, might change after Overall: A classic that’s easy to respect, perfect for old vibes that aren't boring and again with godly harmonies. The like of which are rarely seen, this album realistically shaped the entire genre and for the time was very progressive and strangely experimental for a group established for that long.
8/10
yepi
Every time I listen to this album I don’t get the hype. It’s very good. It’s also kind of annoying at times and really doesn’t FEEL earth shattering.
Its beautiful mellow and ahead of its time , layered and oft emotional about as much as you can expect from an album from the 60s
Classic
I love wouldnt it be nice!! Always reminds me of 50 first dates!! So beachy and chill and great harmonies!! It was a little different then what I was expecting but I really only knew 2 of the songs right off the bat! It was enjoyable and they definitely are poppy harmonizing icons
Some god level songs, some dogshit. Such is pet sounds
Wouldn't it be nice
Standouts Wouldn't it be Nice Let's Go Away for Awhile Sloop John B God Only Knows
Undeniable a production triumph. Robust sound. As much as I want to shit on it, its hard to....I just don't loooove it like the critics say I am supposed to.
It's a great album, for sure. I just don't really understand how it's in the top 5 of most lists.
Really liked it. The california vibes shone through. I've never listened to them before but really liked this. I have always been aware of the album. Stand out tracks for me were 'Pet Sounds' and 'Here Today'. Obviously I knew 'God Only Knows' and 'Wouldn't It Be Nice', which are obviously very good songs, but I've heard then so many times now they just washed over me.
Several classics and interesting deep cuts 👏
Great harmonies. Brian Wilson was brilliant. Never caught me back in the day.
Really enjoyed this album. A few legendary songs I've heard before, but the rest was also really good. I like this happier Beatles-ish sound. It sounds like no worries or problems. Not because it's all happy go lucky, but because it sounds like it's all figured out, it sounds like it's obvious that this is what the album should sound like.
An album I own. Its highly rated because it is good. Full of variation and a great mix of cracking pop songs. Listening to it objectively, it loses a bit in the middle. That said, here are a lot of notable songs and ive listened to it an number of times over the years. 4 Solid stars
Pretty good
I think this is a solid album. The Beach Boys were great, and I will die on that hill!! But for real, you can throw this on for a pleasant listen.
I do know how legendary this album is. Sgt Pepper's legendary. Famous quote as everyone knows it, this was "their Sgt Peppers". Don't recall sitting down to listen to this album. That was a great album!
Great album!
Loses some points for familiarity - there are like 3 all-time songs on here that I’ve loved since childhood, and the more experimental stuff just cannot live up to them
Ground breaking album
This was good but I think with all the hype around it I was maybe expecting something better! Personally I would take “Revolver” instead.
Way better than I expected it to be.
I think I set my expectations too high
"The Rolling Stone" magazine has this ranked as the second greatest album of all time. Wouldn't it be nice if that was true. It was fun while it lasted, but a bit too short. Favorite Track: "Wouldn't It Be Nice".
another classic, that never really clicked with me. They do have a unique sound, but I much prefer the Beatles.
Lush. Definitely worth a listen and a focus in the lyrics.
Classic easy listen
This is the kind of rock I can get around. I like the production a lot, and the lead singer sounds nice enough. It’s still not fully up my alley, but I definitely have a lot of appreciation.
I can feel why it could be good, but I wasn't in it strongly on the first listen.
good listen for 7pm on a week night
Reminds me of cruising with Devon and Bryan in high school, minor league baseball on warm summer nights. Makes me miss them. I liked the sax, mono isn’t the best.
Great album. The harmonies, the orchestration perfectly arranged. A more mature beach boys. Love “wouldn’t it be nice”, “sloop John b” and “god only knows”. rip Brian Wilson!
I own this one. Great album, some classic tracks, wonderful production and those harmonies. Seems quite ahead of it's time for 1966. A couple of filler tracks but it really it really captures a sound for that generation. Top stuff. 4.5/5
i wanted to hate on this so bad but its so whimsical and joyous i cant do it.
Already listened ❤️ Great album Rip
It’s hard to hate a very good album by a band I really hate. But here we are.
A great album, and one I’ve owned for years. There’s no denying its influence - and there are several outstanding tracks that immediately made their way into (and remain in) popular music history. That said, I’ve never felt it fully cohered - and the title track, while undoubtedly groundbreaking at the time, feels little more than clever filler. Classic-ish.
Easily one of the saddest happy albums I've ever heard. Like I can easily imagine someone skipping to these songs, and another person just sobbing to them.
Fun! Would listen again!
Classic album. The overall tone was a lot more sad than most of their big songs. I think I just paid more attention
every repeated listen brings a new detail to the forefront - an interesting texture i missed the previous time, or something subtle hidden beneath the layers of harmony.
No i to jest dużo lepsza, mniej oczywista płyta The Beach Boys. 7.5/10
Nice
Needs more theremin
Seems to be perfect timing to review this gem from the Beach Boys, because it was less than a week ago (as of this writing) that Brian Wilson passed away. For the past few days I've been re-listening to the Beach Boys as a tribute to Wilson, staying clear of the material he wasn't involved in and focusing on the essential albums he had a heavy part in. Pet Sounds is their/his masterpiece and I realized it was the only record from the band I can listen to (intensely) in one sitting. I admit, I've never been fan of most of Beach Boys discography, the beach, girls, surfing and fun fun fun songs, that had little substance, but were effective musical earwigs. The music on Pet Sounds was lush sounding, with layer upon layer of musical sounds unheard of in pop-rock music at the time and with dogged determination, Wilson eventually completed his ambitious "masterpiece" project. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "God Only Knows" are essential in any genre, with a cohesive collection of supporting songs. It's not perfect, it drags a bit at times. but if you had to listen to just one Beach Boys record, strap on your headphones and enjoy Pet Sounds.
Didn't love it
Fantastic album, but not without its flaws. Every song just fades away rather than ending.
Harmonies for miles.
So human
Nice, mild album. Wouldn't it be nice if you don't talk and make pet sound that God only knows?
RIP Brian Wilson
The Beach Boy's ultimate statement and Brian Wilson's exploration into sound. These surf rock and chamber pop songs are brilliantly performed, recorded, and mixed. The album sounds phenomenal. When you're done surfing, sit on the beach and listen to this. RIP Brian Wilson June 11, 2025
This may be controversial, but I would call this a really good album, not one of the best ones ever made. Maybe I’m just not into that s ‘60’s sound
This is melodic pop perfection, really well made and with plenty of stunners. A harsh 4 because it's not really my thing and it is a bit same'ish. This is music I used to find totally uncool, but I am now appreciating for the intrinsic quality (I bought the CD not long ago).
Solid album, authentic, youthful
A little too doo wop for me, and I'm confused why there were two songs without any singing, but there were a couple nice songs. I think we all know the ones I'm talking about.
Apart from the big hits, the individual songs aren't necessarily the most memorable or distinguishable to me, but it's still a breakthrough album with a sound that stands out in its time, and I respect that enough R.I.P. Brian Wilson
Really nice tunes. Rest in peace Brian Wilson.
Never been a big fan of these guys but this album is pretty good.
A classic!
I don't love it
Definitely a masterpiece. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars. It can get a little repetitive after a while, which is the only reason for not going a full 5 stars.
Is the Album Generator really random? Brian Wilson dies yesterday and I get this album today.
Oh man. I got this one the day after Brian Wilson died. Coincidence? Sent deliberately to projects that haven't received it yet? Anyway, this isn't my favorite Beach Boys album but it has Sloop John B, which is my favorite Beach Boys song. Plus a lot of other good ones such as Wouldn't it be Nice and Good Only Knows.
Very nice
RIP, Brian Wilson 🥺.
As a young listener, it’s hard to say this is the greatest album I’ve ever heard, but this certainly set the standard for popular music. Rest in peace, Brian Wilson.
It's a classic. A wonderful album. I never listen to it.
⭐️Wouldn’t it be nice
RIP Brian Wilson. I'm sad to say I've tried to get this album over many years, but it never clicked. I understand what it is historically significant though, and this time around I have it a fresh listen on good headphones (stereo mix). I really appreciated the production this time around, but still find like half of the songs on here forgettable. Overall an interesting experience though, and great singles.
One of the best pop records of all time, RIP Brian Wilson
Music that put the fear of inadequacy in the hearts of the Beatles. So pure, so innocent, so timeless.
Ironic I guess this one popped up today if all days, the day after Brian Wilson passed away at age 82, leaving behind a legacy of great artistic creativity and extreme mental difficulties, which could be attributed to many things, but I won't get into that side of of things, mostly because I think it was a tragic aspect of his life, the partnership he had with his band mates, his father, his therapist, etc. and doesn't eclipse the brilliant music he made during his time on this earth. While this is not my favorite album ever, the legacy it holds is undeniable. Music wouldn't be the same without albums like this that pushed the boundaries of pop music and studio experimentalism, and the songs themselves are all great, some better than others, but really not a full track in the entire project. I think that if not for one or two slower points this album would be a 10/10 for me, but still, going off of where I was 5+ years ago when I didn't really have any love for the album whatsoever, this has grown on me quite a lot over time, perhaps it will continue to grow on me as I continue living. 4.5/5
Great
Really good album. God only knows and wouldn't it be nice are bops!
Certified banger after certified banger.
Amazing album
Wouldn’t it be Nice is iconic, and Caroline, No is incredible. Quality songs all in between, can’t go wrong with Beach Boys
Some of the best pop ever written
I do love this album. It took a couple listens to get it, and it should be listend to on a nice sound system. It's famous for the unconventional recording methods they used at the time. Changing the way people thought about capturing sounds for a studio album.
Very old, very good
Getting this album as my selection the day that Brian Wilson died is likely to make my review a bit more friendly. That said, objectively, this is an excellent album and I loved listening to this today. There’s a lot more depth to these songs than I would have expected. I’m so used to hearing their huge hits on the radio and they are good songs, but they all have a consistent high energy, positive vibe to them. This album shows how much more versatile as a band they were vs. what I had thought. Sure, there are the hits like Sloop John B, God Only Knows, and Wouldn't It Be Nice (all good songs), but this album hits higher notes for me on these lesser known songs, predominantly because of their depth. Songs like I Just Wasn't Made for These Times and That's Not Me are thematically and tonally a departure from the Beach Boys I am used to, which is a lot of fun to discover. The title track is like something an orchestra would conduct for a movie, which makes it a strange but pretty cool part of this album. The vocals on You Still Believe In Me are excellent, especially the way they layer at the end. All in all, an excellent record, way better than I would have anticipated.
Had to listen more than once to pay more attention. This album was kinda sad- it’s funny because most of the actual sounds and the beat and their voices sounds more sing songy and light. Wouldn’t it be nice is a strong opening track and the contrast with the theming of the rest of the album was too good.
The birth of Sunshine Pop
Just an absolute classic with so many bangers
Wasn’t sure if it was a nod by the developer to get this today as Brian Wilson died yesterday. Hard to put my finger on what appeals but there is something flows so nicely throughout and great lyrics too. Felt resonant and connected to it.
The Beach Boys is probably the first band I was ever aware of, and they were my first concert as a very young child. In spite of this early history, I have developed an association with them and the song "Kokomo", which is something that is hard to forgive. But this album, served up today in light of Brian Wilson's passing, is full of bangers. I really enjoyed listening to this and would definitely come back to this album again. Pet Sounds, FTW!
Fav: Wouldn't It Be Nice; I know There's An Answer; Here Today.
Oikein hyvä ja kuunneltava levy. RIP Brian Wilson…
I liked it, some classic songs on the album. Would listen to it again
A classic. Sounds like a warm hug. Vocals are quite drawn out and dream-like.
Obviously a great album. Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows are two of my favorites.
RIP Brian, only this album would have a song named " I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" with such an atmosphere that is both bright and melancholic all the same. Detailed and pretty album all around
-damn RIP Brian Wilson. i listened to this for the first time the previous day after hearing the news and i’m endlessly fascinated by it. absolutely beautiful use of vocals and instrumentals, obviously -i think the lyrics are my favorite part honestly. some of the themes resonate very deeply with me, and it’s quite comforting. will be bumping this -Favorites are Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Sloop John B, and I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times
This reminds me of my 3rd grade teacher, that geezer loved The Beach Boys. I understand, I think the beauty of music is its ability to evoke emotion out you with an arrangement of cords and lyrics. The Beach Boys do that masterfully on this project and it wasn’t always the same emotion. I enjoyed this listen!
As a kid I always found The beach Boys fun to listen to, and I listened to one of their greatest hits albums all the time. I also wore the ever living hell out of Kokomo. It was cool to go back and listen to a full album, because I definitely have not done that enough with this group. 4.25 / 5
Such a cool thing the developer of this site did. I like this album a lot but I don't worship it as some do even though I can understand why people do. I feel like the sheer weight of ideas bursting out of its creaking bounced upon bounced upon 4 tracks communicates Brian Wilson's anxiety too well. I almost find it an uncomfortable listen. When Syd Barrett communicates his mental health through his music it feels like an invitation to a trip with some dark wells of melancholy along the way. With poor Brian I feel like I'm stuck on a fairground ride with someone suppressing a terrified scream.
It felt almost poetic to receive Pet Sounds the day after Brian Wilson passed away. This album is his masterpiece — a timeless showcase of his genius and emotional depth. From the opening notes of “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” the album sets a hopeful, wistful tone that carries through the entire tracklist. Pet Sounds is filled with beautifully crafted pop songs — fun and romantic lyrics layered over rich, innovative arrangements. There’s a mix of well-loved classics like “God Only Knows” and deeper cuts like “Here Today” and “Sloop John B,” which together create a cohesive, emotionally resonant listening experience. Favourite songs: “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “God Only Knows” are undeniable all-time classics, but I have a soft spot for “Sloop John B” — it’s endlessly replayable. Least favourite: “Let’s Go Away for Awhile” didn’t quite land for me. It felt like an unnecessary instrumental interlude between two standout tracks. Album artwork: Iconic — simple, nostalgic, and instantly recognizable.
Wonderful album with one of my all time favourite songs (God Only Knows). RIP Brian Wilson
The Seinfeld of pop music. Incredibly influential, yet not very obviously timeless (on the surface), and thus easily dissmissable as "boring" or "basic". Earnest, sure, with perhaps somewhat simplistic lyrics - but also undeniably masterful in layered harmony and dense, experimental instrumentation. There's no Sgt. Pepper without Pet Sounds. It may not be my favorite record, which is reflected by the overall score I'm giving it, but it is nevertheless an incredible record.
if album called pet sounds why I hear no meow??
rip
Banger.
cool
Good classics, right up there with Thin Lizzy and The Beatles!
RIP Brian Wilson
Wonderful album! Very nostalgic
I’ve got recommended this album the day Brian Wilson has passed away. Rest In Piece I think I prefer the stereo versions to the mono ones. For some reason mono version overwhelms me. If I am not in the right mood sometimes the layering in this album gets a little too much. If I am in the right mood though, I definitely enjoy the album a lot.
Compositionally fantastic and lyrically haunting. I appreciate getting this the day after Brian Wilson's passing.
It’s everything they say it is. But, as inventive and melodic as it is, it still lacks those songs that are ear worms. I’m sorry, if rubber soul is a 5, this is not a 5. I will give it 4.4.
You know what Brian, it would be nice, wouldn’t it… Lots of fun, but I am not astute enough to understand the deeper melodies, apparently. FS: I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times.
Album slaps! I love the green. 7/10
It's a great and genre-defining album but I really just am not a Beach Boys person. I understand that Brian Wilson was a genius and RIP but for me a 5 is an album I want to listen to at least once a year and I probably won't listen to this all the way through ever again. I Just Wasn't Made These Times is an incredible song though that I truly adore.
Brian Wilson died yesterday. What a coincidence to get this Album the day after. I was pleasantly surprised by a lot of this album. However, my interest did diminish after a few tracks... this one is tough. I think Brian Wilson's composition style is so unique and recognisable though, and I really appreciate that. But I also did get tired of the endless love songs. No, it gets a 4. I don't think I've ever heard something quite like this, and I appreciate that
gotta love the beach boys
4.5/5 Fun, sunshiny, and sweet. This album is lemonade in a summer day
Very close to a 5, but not memorable enough other than the first song
Very creative and groundbreaking for their time
To make something original from the Beach Boys sound takes a genius.
Perfectly produced. Some of the Brian Wilson-isms are a tad annoying, but overall it’s genius. Standout tracks are: “You Still Believe in Me” and “God Only Knows”.
Solid sound, but a lot of songs are afraid to end, fading out instead. I personally dislike when they do that. Overall enjoyable, but some tracks come off a bit samey. Still a couple of hard hitters in here. 'God Only Knows' was my fave.
I’ve listened to Pet Sounds quite a few times over the past…10 years or so? Keep trying to find what other people find special/masterpiece-worthy about it, and coming up short. A few classics, an influence, sure, but alone? It’s fine. 3.75
How apt for today. A superabundance of beautiful vignettes.
Very uplifting
I was a bit disappointed not gonna lie. I was expecting it to be a bit more upbeat? God Only Knows and Wouldn't It Be Nice - A+++ absolute bangers! But some of the songs sounded a bit like filler sadly I was lucky enough to see The Beach Boys for free years back. A very good band, but just not this album for me sadly. I'll stick to the greatest hits RIP Brian Wilson 4 ⭐️
Timely album RIP Brian Wilson Classic Beach Boys, great summer songs
Pleasant enough. Always liked Sloop John B. Nice harmonies. 3.5* and rounding up because of the influence and wide-ranging, timeless appeal.
RIP Brian. I've listened to this album a lot over the years. To be honest I have never really got it as an album. There are a few absolute classic slices of pop perfection (in particular Sloop John B and Wouldn't it be Nice) but a lot of it sort of washes over me.
An album always ranked amongst the classics, cited by everyone from Macca (and only today I saw Macca was talking about Pet Sounds again) to Thom Yorke. There's some Phil Sector about it ('Here'); and some Burt Bacharach about it. But the slower numbers rarely reach those heights. the classics, which are truly that. 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' is the perfect showcase for their harmonies, and an amazing rock n roll bassline. 'Sloop John B' a classic for the ages, magnificently crafted and harmonies on turbocharge. A proper singalong. And 'God Only Knows'. Actually a song I've also thought was slightly dreary until listening this time around. This is where the stars align and the Pet Sounds brand of slightly saccharine meets slightly leftfield is absolutely nailed. The canon at the end is amazing.Enough to get to a 4.
I really want to like it. The beach boys just don’t do it that much for me. I tune out. Its good i guess
It’s Pet Sounds, it’s a classic.
I had never sat down and listened to this album before, and it is really innovative and the harmonies are great. The hits are obviously great but all the way through it's a high quality well made album. Perhaps these guys were unfairly pigeon holed.
So many bangers and very iconic part of my childhood. Has rocked when I was 4 and still does at 24. The songs get better as you age because of how experimental they are despite remaining catchy. I Know There's an Answer and Wouldn't it be Nice are my faves
Man, I love the Beach Boys.
It's really complex and pretty.
Very good. I can see why people in the 60’s loved it. God Only Knows is an amazing song.
they got a thing
I can't say anything about this that hasn't already been said except that my husband is currently obsessed with the song "Sloop John B."
Hey! The Beach Boys! I've never listened to this band, though I know about them because of the Weezer song. This review was brought to you by the Pacific Daydream army Pacific Daydream nation. Pacific Daydream - available 8 years ago. It's been 10 or so albums since the last groundbreaking, landmark album and way longer in the time before then, so I'm glad to finally be getting another one of these under my belt. I imagine everything that can be said about this album has already been discussed in great detail, but I am both writing this on a computer and speaking from the perspective of someone who has heard next to nothing about this band, so the following review is the most original, sage and profound expression of wisdom known to man. Yeah, it's pretty alright. I've listened to this album twice and wasn't sold on either occasion, though I'm open to giving it a third opinion somewhere down the line. It is Pet Sounds, after all. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is a very good opener. I've heard it before as I imagine everyone else has, though giving it a real, proper listen was very gratifying. There are a lot of effective choices in the instrumental and songwriting that I wouldn't have picked up on from hearing it passively. Just a rock solid track from beginning to end. "Don't Talk" takes the album in an interesting and strong direction. Very delicate with quite possibly the strongest vocal performance on the album. The strings are pretty immaculate, too. "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" has a strong melody and a pleasing, if cacophonous, instrumental. The title track is another good tune, though it is heavily outshined by "Caroline No", which is fantastic. One of the very best songs I have listened to through this list. I've actually heard the song before, though I didn't know where for the longest time. I first heard it through a cover of the song by Doopees. I both didn't like the album that song came from and had completely checked out by the time I got to it, so I didn't know I was sleeping on auditory gold till this very moment. Okay, maybe I do like this album. It's definitely on my radar. 4/5 is a bit pre-emptive for me in this moment, but I am confident that this album will grow on me with time, so I'm fine taking the risk.
4/5 Great album, very even level, a lot of ”must play” songs for a somewhat short album.
I know the order of these albums are randomly-generated, but it’s quite serendipitous that this record came up for me the day after Brian Wilson passed. This record includes so many hits that I remember from my childhood and they still hold to this day. This album is one of those one-of-a-kind releases, with its own unique sound that really made The Beach Boys who they are. The emotions sway and flow seamlessly throughout the entire duration, and Brian really brings it home with his excitable, yet sometimes somber, voice. Really great album. RIP Brian Wilson.
Great album, RIP Brian Wilson.
Sloop John B. Mike Love walked so Spike Slawson could run.
This is obviously a classic. There are a couple of my favorites here and overall it's a good one.
THIS IS SO MUCH MY STYLE THANKS
r.i.p brian wilson :(
Really lovely. Musically engaging and just very very pretty. You can bathe in the soundscape of this thing.
Great album. Loved it
Classic beach boys album loved it and awesome they had it on the day Brian Wilson died
Who knew The Beach Boys were so melancholic behind those sugary and sunny guitar riffs! My favorite kind of album is one with sad, reflective lyrics and happy tunes.
Cool album. 4/5
Good good
My initial not hot hot take was that God Only Knows is a singular track, standing head and shoulders above the others. Vocal wall of sounds. Beautiful song. I didn't find myself as easily drawn to non-God-Only-Knows Pet Sounds as other classics from around that time (VU Nico/VU, Revolver/Abbey Road). As an example, the first 10 seconds of I Know There's an Answer. So I had moments like that, yet I actually like that song and how it develops. I Just Wasn't Made for these times is another one I really came to like. Part of me wants to extend that Outro like 5 minutes (does Panda Bear do stuff like that?). I guess God Only Knows going forever wouldn't be bad either. I like the let's go away for awhile instrumental. Don't talk is another good one. When I was more on the fence about Pet Sounds I read on reddit you had to listen to all the music that came before this album to appreciate it. Kind of made me roll my eyes...like it somehow reminds me of when someone has to try really hard to convince themselves (or you) to like something, and that feels wrong. Anyway, regarding the production stuff, which I am not educated enough to appreciate, I imagine there is truth there. That gets me thinking though about how hard it is to judge art that is already so heavily commented on, displayed, parodied, etc. I haven't commented on Wouldn't It Be Nice - it's hard to imagine the song without thinking of Homer Simpson (or somebody/something) in a parody. I have a somewhat similar experience with You Still Believe In Me. I don't think this song is nearly as popular...for some reason it reminded me of a sort of a winter holiday song. To close out some hardly comprehensible notes...I still love God Only Knows. I don't think it is surrounded by duds. I don't connect as much with some of the other songs as I do with other well regarded music from that era, but I've come to enjoy the album.
