Christ, I could sing most of this album and the harmony lines without even putting it on. I spent a lot of my time arguing that the Beach Boys were better than the Beatles, and this was very much the exhibit A of my argument. On here, it may just be true. Every track contains more emotion than the entirety of other classic albums, and it touches my actual soul when I hear it. Joy.

It’s tricky, because I can’t go to a Pre-Pet Sounds time and appreciate how important this album is. I love it, and I love the Beach Boys but I generally come away from listening to the full album slightly underwhelmed. In my opinion, there’s 4 or 5 great songs, but an equal amount of forgettable songs, which is kind of lame considering Wilson set out to make the first all killer no filler record. It’s an easy 5 stars, one of the best of all time, but it’s not quite as breathtakingly spectacular as the hype would lead us to believe.

Genre: Baroque Pop 5/5 Ah, Pet Sounds. One of those truly ubiquitous albums that continues to stand the test of time. It's a true pop masterpiece, an album where each song has the tender love and care that most producers and songwriters at the time would put towards just one or two singles. Along with the efforts of The Beatles, The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds is another example of how radically music was changing and growing at the time, and how the competition didn't come from the record companies (though they profited mightily), but from the songwriters themselves. Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney were trading pop masterpieces like boxers trade uppercuts. Pet Sounds, however, certainly does sound and feel its age. It's truly all so classic, from Wouldn't It Be Nice to God Only Knows to every beautiful nugget in between, but I'm sure this album does little to the impatient listener nowadays. The Wall-of-Sound style reverb, and the classical and baroque influences throughout I'm sure turn off some younger listeners nowadays, and the mystique of this album may die with the times. But Brian Wilson here is methodically walking us through his feelings garden, and it's quite the emotional journey, with each track leaving an impression throughout the length of the album. Sloop John B, Don't Talk, That's Not Me, they're all here and they're all songs that would be other band's best song ever. I think even if this album doesn't hit you as hard as it hits others, which isn't usually the case, it still serves as a monolith of the times. A pop project that set the bar quite high for the rest of time.

There's a reason this album is as highly regarded as it is. Super well constructed and hugely influential.

Best Beach Boys album. A must have in your vinyl collection. Appreciate the master as it is much more enjoyable in stereo than mono. Brian Wilson Opus with out a doubt. The work that went into PET SOUNDS and amount of studio musicians performing makes this ear cotton candy. It also has the best collection songs of any of their albums. It definitely moves away from what made them popular with that surfer sound, but that needed to be done.

Combining Brian's drive to create something that would outdo Spector, and challenged by the recent works by the Beatles, he took the same approach to creating music as they did, get off the road and use the studio to create and explore. The resulting Pet Sounds is an album of sheer beauty. Every sound, every harmony, and every noise (bicycle bell or dog barking) matters and is as important to this piece of work, as are the range of musical styles. From the innocence of young love, Wouldn't it Be Nice" to the heartbreaking Caroline No this album represents a man at his musical peak and just like the Wrecking Crew were able to put down what Brian was hearing in his head the Beach Boys were able to put down the complex vocals harmonies coming from that same place. The songs came together beautifully. A pure pop symphony. Really hard to pick a favorite but I will go with; Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Caroline No, I Just Wasn't Made for These Times. 5 out of 5.

The yearning! The beauty! Sweeping, vulnerable, heartbreaking, and singularly brilliant at every turn, I will always love this record and find something new to appreciate about it every time I listen. The way the strings come in one minute into "Don't Talk". The bass switching to a single note for most of the last chorus of "Sloop John B". The subtle key changes throughout "God Only Knows". What I feel like sometimes gets lost in the grandeur of it all is how personal and individual this work of art is. And maybe that's why it's hard for me to feel like this record is overrated -- I feel like I connect with it in a manner that's difficult to describe. After all that's been said about this record, what more is there to say? Favourite songs: Caroline, No, Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Sloop John B, You Still Believe in Me, Let's Go Away for a While

Very good. I very much could see how they inspired / were inspired by the Beatles and other rock bands of this era.

Kind of a slow album. Not much continuity from song to song. Without the well known Beach Boys hits “Wouldn’t it be nice” and “God only knows” the album is pretty mediocre.

The best album of 1966 and a contender for best album of the 60s outright. Brian Wilson took a break from touring after a panic attack and decided that he wanted to take the Beach Boys' sound in a more experimental and introspective direction. He built upon Phil Spector's 'wall of sound' with his own unique orchestrations and ended up with one of the lushest and best produced albums of all time. Here Wilson is at his creative apex both melodically and harmonically. The tone of the album is melancholic and full of longing. The melodies are acrobatic and delicate, and the harmonies are full of depth.

I know this is considered one of the greatest albums but try as I might it really doesn't resonate with me. I like the hits but it seems a bit samey in-between and although I appreciate how it's influenced others this is really about American history and i'm more interested in other genres (Punk and New Wave).

I've never understood all the fuss about the Beach Boys and in particular this album. 'God Only Knows' is a beautiful song but the rests are just OK. Nothing special.

Nightmares are the best part of my day. Most Wednesdays I wake up screaming like a methed up marmot who's just stubbed its toe. I sound like Kerry Katona coughing up a parrot. Then there's usually a vacuum of deafening silence before my foreskin deflates and produces not only the most foul stench imaginable, but the sound of an injured ghost of a crocodile, trying to claw itself back into a different realm. Peter Pan, Peter Pan, Peter Pan.

Wouldn't it be nice? Brian Wilson’s evolutionary compositional masterpiece, eh? Painstakingly put together in an effort to outdo The Beatles, this album was certainly ahead of the curve in terms of production. Some of the lyrics are a bit shit, but I guess that's what you got at the time. Dennis Wilson should have hung out with Charles Manson a bit more for some darker themes.

Introduces young kids to a wide range of animals from eight different habitats or groups. Hear the sounds they make and learn a few fun facts about each animal. There are some memory-recall and musical-exploration games, as well as a collection of offscreen activities to do as a family.

I listened to this one recently, so I don't even need to listen to it again to know how great it is. Such a wonderful album! Nothing I say would do it justice.

Well. It's classic album. But I can't see why, it's.... niceish, in a cheeey way. Harmony is pleasant, if sometimes a bit over the top. Perhaps you had to be there. I really was expecting something more compelling.

I see the charm but still...it still feels like an album that lots of people like because they have been told that it is a likeable album. I've heard Pet Shop Boys before. It's difficult not to feel a warmth in your heart with most of their songs. It's really a soung that represents the turning of the 60's, mostly in America... A piece of musical history, in my opinion. - An issue I've been having with 1001 is that there are only English-speaking bands and singers. I didn't check for this info but it seems that they're mostly American as well... Anyway, it's been a fun experience so far!

Right, how are we rating albums? Is it influential? Does it have bangers? Is there too much filler? Why is the same song on there twice? Would you listen to it again? I still feel the same about it as I did as a teenager - some absolute tunes, but still feels like a lot of filler…

One of the most overrated albums of all times, boring

Damn it. I don't want to like the Beach Boys. My life would be so much more easier in terms of music, if I didn't have to reconcile my complete distain for their sound and lyrical content, and then this album comes up. The production on this album is like no other that I've heard. God Only Knows is like one of the best songs I've ever heard. There are a few very sleepy songs on here though, that really drag this thing down the tubes. Overall, though this is an establishment of the Beach Boys as something a bit more relevant in the landscape.

Deze jongens zouden er toch goed aan doen om de volgende keer het strand aan te doen met een paar flessen goedkope alcohol. Tof feestje bouwen ze, maar het mist toch altijd wat schwung!

Erg goed, vooral die samenzang is geweldig. Toch vind ik de totaalsound net niet helemaal mijn ding. Dus dan toch 3 sterren.

Het is een klassieker, unaniem als meesterwerk bestempeld. En het zou schijnbaar zelfs de Beatles zo erg hebben gemotiveerd om met iets nog veel beters te komen. Wat het album St Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band opleverde. Dat dat vind ik inderdaad veel beter dan Pet Sounds. Beetje braaf allemaal.

Ik was dit gisteren gedurende de dag aan het luisteren met een half oor en dacht: 'Goh, wat een oud geluid voor The Pet Shop Boys, ik wist niet dat zij in de jaren zestig ook al actief waren....' Best mooi album overigens.

This album was an interesting listen, while I find the instrumentation quite good on all the more upbeat songs, the sadder more emotionally driven songs with exceptions of Caroline, no sounded less pleasurable and found the song you still believe in me very unlistenable the first time around. However, the singing is very well delivered in all songs and the highs on this album such as wouldn't it be nice, sloop john b, pet sounds among the majority make this an enjoyable listen. While the review shows four stars I would give it around 3.5 stars for my personal enjoyment

I have tried to get into this album many many times, I mean, it is the album that put the Beatles into SPLHCB way and one of the greatest songs and all that but I just can’t, it’s kinda silly to me, I love wouldn’t it be nice but I’m not very fond of the rest of the record, sounds very dated and yeah, silly to me. Really sorry about this one.

Rispekt njima što su napravili tada u glazbi u tom periodu sa ovim albumom. Međutim, nije mi nikad bio previše dobar, bio mi je mid, jer su ga dosta napuhali, a samim time moja su očekivanja bila mal jača od normalnog, a da ne govorim kako ne paše album na ovo hladno smrznuto vrijeme. Dobar album, ali nije u mojoj rotaciji.

This is maybe the best pop album of all times. Compared to peak Beatles the songs have the same quality and complexity, but sound more effortless and natural. That may be due to the often childish lyrics of Brian Wilson. These (and the album cover) give the album a feeling of pure innocence.

The eleventh album from the Beach Boys. Initially met with lukewarm reviews, this album is now regarded as one of the most influential progressive pop albums ever. This album was produced in a ground-breaking way, by incorporating different instruments and genres, and recording the music more like an orchestra than a rock band. Genres of pop, jazz, exotica, classical, and the avant-garde, mixed conventional rock set-ups with layers of vocal harmonies, samples, and new instruments such as bicycle bells, French horns, flutes, an Electro-Theremin, whole string sections, and even beverage cans. Because of this over production, the album could not be replicated live. This album revolutionized the music industry and became very popular, although over time. Pet Sounds has been certified platinum. At release this album seemed weird and was overshadowed by the Beatles releasing some of their best work. In conclusion, this beautiful and ambitious album of pop music was a little too ahead of its time, but it pushed the music industry forward into better production techniques, as well as opened the door to new concepts being used in any well-rooted genres. You can't find an artist that began their career after this album, that hadn't been influenced by this great work of art.

I mean really

This is not an easy album to love. The melodies are not standard pop fare, they are complex and the hooks are while their are present but require repeated listens to make their way into your brain. This is not Sgt. Pepper, with its easily hummable melodies and easy hooks. It's a great album but it requires time before it's greatness is revealed. It did at least for me. 5 🌟

Went for the stereo version. So many good songs it's hard to pick a highlight. Beautiful, genre-bending music that was way ahead of its time but also nostalgic.

Un album de très grande qualité sans pour autant disposer d'un mixage digne de ce nom. J'ai en ce sens pris contact avec la personne en charge dudit mixage pour cet album afin de lui demander ce que signifiait tout cela. Celui-ci m'a très gentiment répondu que l'équilibre et la cohérence entre les différentes pistes audio lui importaient peu et qu'il ne donnait de l'importance qu'aux sons d'animaux. Selon lui, une superposition de cris d'animaux de la ferme faisait parfaitement l'affaire. Je lui fis part de mon désaccord et c'est à ce moment précis qu'il raccrocha le combiné.

Un excellent album de la part de ces bons vieux Beach Boys, qui n'ont en revanche toujours pas trouvé le moyen de mixer correctement leur album. La prochaine fois, cela ne passera pas et sera pénalisé comme il se doit. Je ne m'attarderai pas sur les multiples bruits d'animaux fermiers présents sur l'enregistrement, qui gachent un peu la prestation du chanteur du groupe. C'est leur choix artistique, et l'on se doit de le respecter.

I like how 'gimmicky' the Beach Boys were. Many tiny details in this one. Bookmarked more than half the songs on this album.

Who knew the surf pop dudes could write an album of such exquisite beauty? Pet Sounds is one of the greatest works of art of the twentieth century. Fragile, delicate, poetic, with perfect arrangements and haunting tunes, this album stands alongside the compositions and musical innovations of The Beatles. A transformative album, to take you from where you are to another place and time. The delicate beauty of God Only Knows is a fine love / love lorn song and tracks like Wouldn’t It Be Nice and Sloop John B have a playful enjoyable energy to them. A five star classic and an album which will be remembered and revere in centuries to come.

Questlove had it right. This thing transcended music. It’s like Brian Wilson had a secret time machine.

First listened to this years ago and never quite got it. Revisited recently and it's probably an all time top 5 album. Best tracks 1. I'm Waiting For The Day 2. God Only Knows 3. Nice to hear again

There was only one song that I have heard previously of in the entire album of course it was 'Wouldn't it Be Nice'. Other than that, the album was a delve into the sound of the 60s pioneering new sounds and instruments used for rock at the time including bicycle bells, French horn, flutes, Electro-Theremin, string sections, and beverage cans. Overall an ok album but not as good as the hype that I have heard surround this record. Best: Wouldn't It Be Nice Worst: Sloop John B 2.5 Stars

So much written history on this album, that I feel like all I can write is personal feelings since most of you know the facts. The production is amazing for the era even if it borrows much from Spector. But to me, sometimes things are thrown in that don't make a lot of sense (ex: bike horn at the end of You Still Believe in Me... or the random lounge music of Let's Go Away and Pet Sounds). It's the Beach Boys so there's a lot of falsetto (would the band have been better without it?) and like most 60's pop you have to be in the mood for sugar and sap. This is always compared to Sgt Peppers but the more fair comparison is Revolver- 66 vs 67 are almost different eras... and Revolver still had a little bit of that sugar and sap- You have Yellow Submarine to contrast Sloop John B. Here, There and Everywhere is as sappy yet sweet as Wouldn't It Be Nice. But, the Beatles were just writing differently at this time, branching into adulthood and Pet Sounds is still written for teens and college kids. Not that there's anything wrong with that! But, it's music that you can do a 180 in a second if it doesn't strike you that day. If you are having an "adulting" day you probably aren't going to turn on Pet Sounds. You could say that about most albums I suppose, but the swings I do on this one prevents me from calling it one of the greatest of all time even though I've said just as such on a day where it truly sounded that way to me.

Need no introduction to this one. My all time favorite. There are goats on the front because it is the GOAT. Brian Wilson did something unprecedented with this album, and few have been able to imitate the results he achieved here.

Pretty okayish... Liked Sloop John B - so far after listening to 10 songs. Let's see how this goes.

Not for me. Derivative of Beatles

First time listen, and I am really shocked all the indie people love this album so much! It’s talked about in the same breath as the White Album. I expected something really different based on the hype. California falsetto harmony/layered singing brass surf pop, and that falsetto harmony/layered brass surf pop thing doesn’t spark joy for me. Listened twice just in case I was missing something.

I understand the significance of the production of this album, but I don’t listen to The Beach Boys for a reflection on life. I listen to them for light, sing along beach and cars songs. They’re The Beach Boys! 4 for the two singles off this album

The Beach Boys made some great music - after all they invented the whole dream pop / shoegaze genre with just one great song: "All I Want To Do" while "Good Vibrations" is the best pop song ever made ..but those songs are not on this record, and Pet Sounds is a small misstep in their oeuvre. OK, quite a few songs are classics: Sloop John B, God Only Knows, Wouldn't Be Nice, I Know There's An Answer / Hang On To Your Ego, so 3* or lower is impossible to give, but quite a few of the other songs are rather boring.

Very good album. Interesting melodies with beautiful vocal harmonies, though I'm not a huge fan of the high falsetto vocals.

Need I say more? One of the most important albums of the 60s indeed of the rock era. 5 stars

11th October 2021 Listened while at the supermarket and cleaning up the flat before coming home for the week for the literature festival. I prefer the more upbeat beach boys and this wasn't what I was expecting of the full album but I can certainly understand how progressive it was.

Totally get why this is on the list, not really my thing. Grew up with dad playing it so I know heaps of the songs. Family just asked why I was playing the Cadbury song. Sigh. God Only Knows is a work of genius.

WOW. I love this album. I'd put this in my Top 5 all time for sure. Stunningly beautiful melodies, soaring rich harmonies, insane instrumentation, and poetic lyrics. A classic.

I've never really liked The Beach Boys. This album is very typical of their music, so naturally I dislike it. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is the most recognizable tune on it, and all I could think was "Wouldn't it be nice if no Beach Boys albums were on this list?" 1 star.

I had always heard how "genius" this album was so I was going in with high expectations. This was not at all what I was expecting, but in a great way. I have heard the greatest hits of TBBs countless times as a kid and have seen them live a long time ago, but this was so far from that sound. Surf rock, pop, and an orchestra so amazingly mixed together. Makes me think a bit of Metallica's S&M somewhat. Great album. Needs a couple relistens

I studied this album as part of my college degree, it's that big of a deal. Even so, I wasn't prepared to give it a 5 start review. But, as I listened, I realized that this really is a milestone album in the history of recording. So many of these songs are OBJECTIVELY great songwriting and (despite Brian Wilson's penchant for lazy fade-out endings) the production really is astounding. Wilson truly was a mad genius and his capacity for brilliance is on full display here.

I think it's overrated, to be honest. Wouldn't It Be Nice is a phenomenal opener, but I don't think the rest of the album lives up to the tone it sets. Not to say I didn't love the songs I saved and overall had a very enjoyable listening experience, but I don't feel like it endures in the way that other monumental albums in this list do. Instrumentation and harmonies are beautiful, but the lyrics are so damn flat sometimes. It sounds like Phil Spector if he had joy in his heart. It sounds like if the Carpenters had a collab album with the Beatles (I love the Carpenters this is a compliment). What a lovely little album.

A classic. One of the staples of pop music.

I've always liked this album, but never loved it. It's unquestionably the height of Brian Wilson's song writing before his mental health issues overcame him. It was inspired by Rubber Soul, which is a much funner album to listen to, and it doesn't reach the heights that the Beatles would reach with their subsequent albums. In isolation, all of the songs are good and the harmonies are excellent. It just is not an album that inspires me when I listen to it. Great, but not that interesting 4/5

Well, it started out great... and something weird happened at the end of I'm waiting for the day...

So, this is the definitive pop album of all time? There are clearly the bangers: sloop john b, wouldn't it be nice and god only knows that stand out. but honestly, that's really it. everything else seems nice, but not catchy. it's the equivalent if it was a song of verses, but no chorus. it sounds nice, but it doesn't really end up being very catchy for me.

Decent album, very bright and sunshine great intro in “wouldn’t it be nice “.. 6/10 overall kinda was not my vibe at that moment. Will def revisit

Really good harmonies. I also like the percussion. I can't really see myself going to listen to anything again, except for God Only Knows, that song is amazing. Here Today is also good, I love its use of brass. Overall good album.

One of the best albums. There's little better than the Beach Boys at their best, and this album is definitely a great one.

Not my favorite. 3) That's Not Me: Positive vibes. It's alright. 4) Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder): Slow, crooning song again. I LOVE the orchestra in this song. 5) I'm Waiting for the Day: Upbeat!! Catchy beat and breakdown. Orchestra bangs again at the end! LOVE THE ENDING OF THIS SONG. 6) Let's Go Away For A While: Okay the orchestra up to this point has been captivating me. God the instrumentals on this one is awesome! THE PIZZICATO!!! ONE OF MY FAV TRACKS RN. 7) Sloop John B: Tells a story. 8) God Only Knows: Another classic one!! 9) I Know There's An Answer: Cool bassline. 10) Here Today: OK 11) I Just Wasn't Made For These Times: I like the vocals on this one. 12) Pet Sounds: Instrumentals caught me off guard haha. Starts out nice and peppy. What you expect the BB to sound like. But then kinda drones on and gets monotonous.

I'm not in love with this album like a lot of people are. I think its fairly interesting but more so as a point in music history as opposed to good in and of itself

This seems a lot more experimental. It’s also very precise. Sometimes it feels like they want to be making other types music, but they’re stuck making Beach Boys albums.

Overall a weird album. Didn’t love most of the songs. Feels like everything’s been slowed down, like maybe this is what the world feels like when you’re on tranquilizers (which I suppose they were when they recorded this).

This is a good album. It has some classics. The other songs are ok.

I think if Dylan, the Beatles and the stones created the rock/pop sounds from the 60s to now, the Beach Boys were the last gasp of the proto rock. Falsetto voices, harmony, nothing getting out of first gear. It's well performed and exceptionally well recorded, but it's just not my jam. I suppose it's better than ZZ Top and bovine Jovi and whatever else rock turned into.

Listened to this album for the first time a few years ago and loved it. It's still a joy to hear.

it's a solid record with interesting sounds, particularly for it's time, but the sound just doesn't speak to me like other sounds do. this is perhaps due to it having been incorporated into so many other works which were inspired by it that i've heard over the years that it's brilliance is sort of lost on me. i got dylan's blonde on blonde the day before this one and i gave it a 4/5; i liked listening to blonde on blonde at least a full star more than pet sounds, thus the 3/5. favorite track: Hold on to your ego.

I’ve never understood why this is such a revered album. Aside from “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “God Only Knows” this album is a snooze fest. Give me the version of The Beach Boys that’s all about girls, surfing and fun.

I am starting to see a pattern in these picks. Obviously, the albums in their entirety are not seen as the "need to listen to", but specific songs that have been influencial in general. This is a nice album for easy listening, but it isn't my go to, and I probably won't listen to it in it's entirety again. Sorry to Beach Boys fans! :P

A classic album highlighting the advanced orchestration and attention to detail of Brian Wilson. This holds the most touching and cherished Beach Boys songs as well.

What a vapid album. I've heard it's supposed to be really good, but I've listened a few times over my life and I still don't get it. I listened again several times and it's even worse than I remembered since I looked at the lyrics. Take a song like I know there's an answer. We're dealing with safe spaces and people getting in bubbles worse than ever today and you think he's going to have an answer, but he has no fucking answer. It's so unsatisfying. All these songs are boy-girl love songs and it just stinks. The only thing keeping it from 1 star is that the instrumentals can be good. Most of the time, it's pretty plain jane. It's basically like stupid beatles. It's fake progressive - progressive for people who wear boat shoes. NEXT.

Like other Beach Boys albums I struggle to understand why it is quite so highly regarded. There are some really strong tracks on here without doubt but there are others I’ll want to skip. Overall a good album that I can enjoy and appreciate but not an album that I can love.

Good album to listen through, and it contains a few all-time pop greats. The production is as good as the hype around it, but I personally don't rate it a top 10 album because it's just not my style at the moment. Compared to the Beatles, I find it a little too far over on the pop side to listen that regularly.

Interesting to listen to the full album. Sad, haunting, beautiful. Clear influences to Wilco & some Pink Floyd 40-50 years earlier.

wtf is up w album cover? I guess this validates  the adage that says "you can't judge a book by its cover" The Beach Boys seemed so wholesome and so damn American that I ignored them until recently (of course, 20 years ago is recently in Beach Boys terms). It eventually became impossible for me not to concede that God Only Knows is a fucking masterpiece. God Only Knows has numerous chords that are unrecognizable to most which is probably a good thing since this ensures it doesn't get butchered by campfire guitar hacks (like me). While that song is the clear highpoint, the low point is the song Pet Sounds which is almost as bad as the cover of Pet Sounds. Was having a bad cover and bad song with the same name part of their sense of humour? If it was intended to be a joke, it's not very funny.   Some of the orchestral songs don't really do it for me. I could say God Only Knows equals five stars regardless of  the rest. I could say that - but I won't.

The GOAT

An all-time classic I'd never listened to before. It lived up to it's billing - a beautiful, tender and melancholic record, and quite far removed from the Beach Boy's west coast pop (which is also great). Both sides start and finish with classics and the songs in between help this album to read very much of a consistent piece. A pretty much perfect record. 5/5.

Bought on 2nd hand vinyl with one of my first paper round wages. Side 2 is the standout, every song being a classic. I find side 1 more of a challenge after the opening 2 songs. 3/5

Volumes have been written about this album, it’s production and orchestration, the 60+ musicians, all the firsts. I’ve listened to it a couple of times over the last few years and I think I've watched more than one documentary that looked at the “making of”. I was never too crazy about the Beach Boys surf pop sound. It was a style that got discarded quickly as the 60s progressed and despite this lavish production, I'm still hearing that style, albeit a more sophisticated version of it.

I may be committing a spot of heresy here but this is...a bit shit? The songs tend to drag, the production and orchestration feel creaky and I really struggle with the drippy, lugubrious vocals. I am to understand that this is an enduring work of genius, but one or two tracks aside I'm not getting any juice out of this lemon. The soupy sounds of a bunch of wet lads, criminally overrated all told.

It is impossible to rate this album below perfection. This is arguably the best album of all time in rock and roll history. It as yet to be bettered today, decades later. It achieved more with less given limited yet innovative technologies at the time. Must be listened to start to finish.

I've read the glowing reviews and I've listened to this 3-4 times now thinking huh, WTF am I missing? But I still don't get it. I suppose it was highly innovative for its time but I just don't like the glorious harmonies, corny arrangements and sappy lyrics. Many others give it a 5 calling it a masterpiece but this is not Sgt Pepper, DSOTM or Ziggy Stardust. I give it a 1, +1 for its production values.

Beach Boys fans are going to hate you if you don't like this album but you have to be a Beach Boys fan to care about anything here. If you e been in a grocery store in the last 30 years you've heard Wouldn't It Be Nice. That's pretty much the album just never meeting the catchiness of that track.

Possibly the best album ever made

I remember pitchfork hyping this while I was in college. I gave it a few skeptical listens and didn't hate it, but I also didn't fall in love. Anytime I hear the tracks I enjoy them. I think calling "the greatest rock album ever made" is crazy, but it does hold up well and continues to influence tons of people.

I hear (and see) Pet Sounds as a pure Masterpiece. It is my belief that it has some of the best music the band ever created...lovely, catchy, and experimental. The Beach Boys were in major transition and Brian Wilson was insisting on pushing the envelope in writing and instrumentation. Some of the sounds on the record are quite raw and wild, and while the rest of the band wasn't feeling it, Wilson's mental health imbalances and his creative genius combined were strong contributors to making sure this piece of art was recorded as it was. I am so grateful that I was able to take my mom to Milwaukee to see Brian Wilson and his band (including original member, Al Jardine) perform Pet Sounds in its entirety a few years back. We were overjoyed. We were choked up often. The album live was gorgeous! The second half of the show was a long line of Beach Boys hits written by Brian. We sang along and smiled at each other often. I'll never forget it. Only a few years prior, I witnessed the entire band perform at Bonnaroo. The crowd was nuts and hundreds of massive beach balls were flying overhead. This was a time that the ego of Mike Love and mental health of Brian Wilson were able to merge for a reunion tour. Wouldn't It Be Nice to experience a music festival again and the Beach Boys again soon! **important to note that Love & Mercy with Paul Dano & John Cusack (each taking on two stages of Wilson's life) is a stellar representation of the highs & lows of the Beach Boys and Wilson.

Technically, this might be the best pop record ever made. An absolute masterpiece that is completely enjoyable on multiple levels.

Imagine making this masterpiece and later having people scream “Kokomo!” at you at every single show you play for forty years straight until you die, when you then have people scream “Kokomo!” at you in the afterlife for all eternity. Sometimes I get very sad.

I had this when I was a teenager... Its a funny one because on first listen, I'd say its not really my cup of tea. 60s pop can sounds pretty dated, and its hard to distinguish the good from the bad, because it all just sounds 60s. I do recognise that this was progressive, for the beach boys themselves and music in general. Listening more carefully, I really love the orchestral sections, the fast-slow & quiet-loud transitions, almost choral or barber shop harmonies. Really enjoyed some of the lesser-known side 2 songs like "Here Today" - big, epic, cinematic sounds.

Okay, I’m really excited about this one because I really like the Beach Boys! And I already know some of these songs. And it didn’t disappoint. Some of the songs weren’t as good as others, but it was pretty good as a whole.

I appreciate this album and the Beach Boys - they were a big part of my childhood listening. Where this one falls down some for me is in the dweeby, simplistic, overly emotional lyrics in many of the songs. But I can't deny the iconic sounds and the cultural weight that Pet Sounds carries.

A departure from everything I thought the Beach Boys were. This is neither beach music or boys music. It is a combination of pop/jazz with a ton of orchestral music woven in. It showcases why Brian Wilson is considered to be one of the greatest songwriters in history. The music couldn't be more solid. Each of the songs instrumentals is carefully crafted and even some of the odder sounds feel like they fully belong. The lyrics are more mature and even though experimental it still has a fantastic flow and rhythm to it. I never thought I would love a beach boys album as much as I did this one and I feel a little upset at myself having obviously never given them a fair listen. The only issue I have with this album is the songs are too short, I always wanted more and with this the fade outs(while the singing was still going on) were not to mu liking. But the harmony of this album far out weighs and gripes I may have.

I first listened to this album a few years ago, and remember not liking it. When this album came up on this list, as I knew it would, I hoped that with my expectations lowered it would be an improvement for me. It wasn’t. The album was full of midtempo tracks that were neither particularly rocking or particularly chill. I don’t like Brian Wilson’s voice when he sings with more drawn out notes. The reputation of this album proceeded it, but it just wasn’t for me. My personal enjoyment: 1.5/5 Did it belong on this list: 5/5

One of the most exquisitely beautiful albums you could ever hope to hear. Also a very brave and heartfelt album, leaping head first into uncharted territory beyond genres. Nothing else sounds like this. In my ideal alternate universe this would have caught on more commercially and the Beach Boys would have continued more in this vein. I absolutely adore Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. This was one of the first CDs I ever owned. I drove down to Iowa to see him perform the album in it's entirety in 2017 and hearing God Only Knows in person was one of the most powerful musical experiences of my life. I always come back to this one and I always will. Transcendent. Hors categorie.
