Reviews (page 10 of 15)
pretty. good
I've been critical in the past of the Beach Boys for all their songs sounding the same, so I was surprised by the variety present in this album. I guess modern radio just has bad taste? Anyway, favorite track is "Sloop John B." A much higher ranking than I expected to give.
Strong singles and harmonisation, excellent for its time
A good album, I liked Wouldn't It Be Nice, I'm Waiting For The Day and Sloop John B the most.
Different! Some classics in there.
Typical Beach Boys. Wonderful harmonies
Zasadniczo to przyjemne, wesołe piosenki, idealne do uśmiechniętej Polski. Dużo o miłości co przypada akurat na tydzień naszego ślubu. 4/5

Big 4
There were a couple songs I liked
I like wouldn’t it be nice, you still believe in me, god only knows, and I just wasn’t made for these times
It has one of the greatest songs of all time. It's a pretty good album.
Lovely
Pretty standard beachy vibes for their stuff. It's perfectly nice and enjoyable, but I'd never listen to this album straight through again either.
4.1
Not as groundbreaking as like, Smile, but still beautiful
Iconic 1st song, chill album
I'm kinda torn on this one. A classic album from a classic group. Do I like a lot of it? Yes. Do I think it does enough for me to give it the score it usually receives? I'm not sure. Fuck it, I'll give it a light 4. Fav songs: - Wouldn't It Be Nice - Waiting for the day - Sloop John B - God Only Knows - I Know there's an answer
After the first 3 songs I’m thinking “over rated” but I enjoyed the rest. Not the top 5 best all time, like some critics have it, but quite good.
Oh baby this has long been in many peoples top albums of all time list. On that note Sloop John B -> God Only Knows is incredible, two generational songs back to back. I think God Only Knows is a top 5 song of all time. This album has such a specific sound and formula, not only unique for it’s time but unique for almost anytime.
I think this is the first time I have heard this album from start to finish. Amazing vocals and harmonies and very familiar songs at times. Shame it hasn't got Good Vibrations on it!
Such great harmony and composition, but not many hits.
Playful and fun. Would definitely listen to on a summer day. Bliss
A few classics scattered throughout here, just some standard British pop. Didn’t love it but I still find quite a few of their songs enjoyable
Here's a hot take, Brian Wilson has more talent and creativity than any other single member of the Beetles and this band could have been as big or even bigger than the Beetles if he didn't have to single handedly carry the groups creative load. His genius is on full display in this album. I think that this is an album where it stands up today but you have to take a step back and realize how revolutionary this style of recording and songwriting was for the time. Brian Wilson and the Beetles stand alone as the only ones doing anything this innovative with the recording technology available at the time. The rich harmonies and orchestral sound was unlike anything anybody heard in pop music before. Is it my favorite collection of songs? Not really, I do like a bunch of them though. But the historical significance of this one is hard to understate.
Very good
Incredible collection of some of their best.
Gerade der erste Titel ist ein Klassiker, der Restt so lala.
Another classic I guess. I’ve begun to appreciate The Beach Boys and this I guess is a one of their best.
Not as groundbreaking now as in 1966 but still a nice listen. I particularly enjoyed Lets Go Away for a While which constantly seems ready to transition into a verse but never does. Even without lyrics it says more than most songs can with a dozen verses.
A classic! Didn’t find any singles that stood out to me other than the hits on the album. I think it’s more of a complete album to listen and relax to back to front
нее, не сегодня, сатана. это я слушала
heard this album a ton already. super pretty and enjoyable album. ignoring the obvious choices, dont talk is my favorite song. i dont find myself putting this on very often though. 8/10
Probably 4.5, but maybe 5. I like the timpani and orchestrations a lot in this. I'm waiting for the day has the amazing outro "you don't think..." repetition and "i know there's an answer" are the two songs I didn't know as well that hit me this time. Sloop John B is so great (I have it intertwined in my memory with Okkervill River's "John Allyn Smith Sails" by now due to my listening habits. And I love the John B <> John Berryman signifier in that song).
I'm sure its super
I’ve been going to hard on 5s. This was tough.
In my heart it's a three, but I recognize the crucial importance of this album. Also recently watched a documentary about The Wrecking Crew, the house band at Capitol Records that Brian Wilson leveraged to make all these incredible sounds. An incredible group of people.
I remember this one, some good tunes on here. 4
Great
Heavy hitter today. Widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time. Definitely groundbreaking for its time and still holds up to this day. I think it comes down to if you vibe with the vocals or not. While I don't love them, I don't hate them either. 8/10 (4/5)
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. What is everyone hearing here that I'm not? I've read and watched and listened to so many critical assessments and deep dives into this album, and it still just shines like The Beach Boys. I get that they innovated with the baroque sound that became popular in the mid sixties, and of course Brian Wilson is a great composer of melody, and this is undoubtedly a very good album. But it being in the conversation of greatest album ever is confounding to me. Also, I HATE the way they recorded the drums. It sounds like they're in another room down the hall. And they put Sloop John B on here. It's a banger but imagine if Roll Over Beethoven was on Sgt. Pepper.
Classic sounds of enjoyable surf tunes
Album Nr. 58 Ach ja. Die Beach Boys. Gutes Album. Jedoch mit dem einen und dem anderen schwächeren Titel.
I can appreciate the production values of this, even though it is not something I'd listen to actively.
Solid album. Standout songs: I'm Waiting for the Day I Know Theres an Answer I Just Wasnt Made for these Times
I liked the album more than I thought I would. Especially since I found it started too slow after the banger of an opening. The way they use their voices as a whole not just to sing lyrics but as an entire secondary (not using this term to reduce it's merit) instrument is phenomenal though.
Great easy listening, well produced
Solid album, for me a greatest hits is probably better for me with a band like this. But I think if I were more of a fan of the Beach Boys that this album would really stand out.
Know it well
Das ganze Album klingt wie eine Kirchenmesse, but in a good way.
It's been ages since I listened to this album. For all the accolades it gets, I was hoping for more when it came up today. That's not to say it's bad or that I disliked it, I guess I was just expecting to be blown away. The production is amazing, great sound and instrumentation all the way through. The songs are...fine. Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows of course are classics and probably on most people's top 100. Sloop John B is a song I totally forgot about but I always loved. All that said, this is a super fun record and I would absolutely listen to it again. This is one of the albums that if I saw it in the record store I would pick it up for sure and play it a few times a year. So in that sense, it’s a good one to me. #2 album of all time as suggested by Rolling Stone (for what that's worth)? Definitely not. But enjoyable nonetheless. I'd give it a 3.75/5 but will round up to 4.
wow another band. as usual i know ONE song off the album. love that first song. the second song was like. ok? what is going on? cool. sounds pretty overall. OH another song i knowwww. god only knows. of course. love that one. easy listening album. noice.
I’ve owned this album for decades and listened to it a hundred times or more. It’s almost too big to rate. It’s been lauded as one of the top two or three albums of all time for longer than I’ve been alive, but how often does someone decide to spin Pet Sounds just for the hell of it? Maybe the baby boomers’ lead-exposure-damaged brains cause them to think an anxious and depressed twenty-something boy band member who had until that point only made songs about surfing, cars and girls but decided to hire a bunch of studio musicians with the deliberate intention of making the greatest rock album of all time and then started playing glockenspiels and coca-cola bottles is good. Maybe it’s just three hits, a bunch of filler, and one full on Exotica song for some reason. I don’t know. But when an album kicks off with “Wouldn’t it Be Nice” and then goes on to contain “Sloop John B” and “God Only Knows”, it’s hard not to give it full marks. “Here Today” and “I’m Waiting for the Day” aren’t too bad either. Ultimately, I am trying to rate albums based on how I feel about them as an individual and not based on their place in rock history or whatever. For me, Pet Sounds is a cool sounding and pretty album that I can appreciate for not being afraid to get real weird. But I don’t consider it one of my all-time favorites.
Pure vibes front to back. I often forget how wonderfully creative The Beach Boys were. Love this record
I loved this album. Even the songs I didn't know where easy to enjoy. The ones I did know are absolute classics, in my opinion. The music and songs are SO simple but also so heartfelt and warm.
Banger of an album. Fun fact- The Beach Boys was my first concert. I was 5 years old.
4* for God Only Knows alone
Long album, has some of the famous songs. Could be worth a short listening to some of the songs that haven't stuck around so much.
Gorgeous music, some of which of course I remembered from my early years in the 1960's, but really enjoyed hearing the songs which didn't make Top 40, like I Know There's an Answer. Amazing album.
Good, solid, classic Beach Boys. Several good songs I either previously starred or starred this time.
Some really great songs!
overall just an old times pop album. I think there's a lot of good lyrics sprinkled into the songs here but overall I found the album lacking a bit? maybe I missed something. 3 stars literally just for wouldn't it be nice but overall 7/10
Pretty solid. It would be nice. -8/10
quite good, beach boys are a classic 8/10
Could also be considered a compilation of every song used in a rom-com movie montage or a Vine.

Classic sounds
Pioneering but not necessarily a brilliant listen now. There's some great ideas ready to come out here but I think the record is held back by still needing to be a Beach Boys record. Things like the fade out endings happen too often to be attributed to lazy writing and feel more like they've been forced upon ideas that strayed too far from the brief while the raucous horn sounds and shouts needed someone to tone it down a bit. Still, some brilliant tracks here push this above any of the 3s I've given.
Meh
Good album.
3 great songs trapped in the mess that is Brian Wilson’s brain
Went in expecting a dry outdated classic rock sound. I didn’t expect how good this album would be. Fun easy listen and good music.
Love The Beach Boys and their harmonies. The orchestra background was a nice touch. Sloop John B and Wouldn’t it Be Nice couple of my favorite songs of theirs.
Still cute!
Cool instrumentals throughout, Pet Sounds - Mono is really awesome
Good album.
Pretty, beautiful album. Unfortunately, I’m not quite old enough to have listened to it when it first came out and to realize how revolutionary it sounded. So at this stage of the game, to me, it sounds like a lot of other baroque pop or chamber pop issues by dozens if not, hundreds of other artists. And I have to rely on historians to tell me that this was never ever done before and that when it came out people’s jaws just fell on the floor. It really only works to be a jaw-dropping album if you were around when it first came out. I wasn’t
A great album, indeed a classic. Brilliant recording. Not something I'd listen to everyday though, just personal preference.
I’ve heard these songs before (obviously), but upon relistening there’s songs I’ve never heard before that are simply stunning
1. Wouldn't It Be Nice - 9.2 - nice and feel-good. 2. You Still Believe In Me - 8.6 - great song but it feels like 60s guys would use this to justify cheating 3. That's Not Me - 8.9 - beautiful 4. Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) - 9.2 - awesome, slow, melodic song 5. I'm Waiting for the Day - 8.3- pretty good. sounds similar to the rest, though. 6. Let's Go Away for Awhile - 8.8 - great instrumental. 7. Sloop John B - 9.1 - awesome, sounds like a nursery rhyme at times. 8. God Only Knows - 9.6 - Awesome song. Beautiful. 9. I Know There's an Answer - 7.8 - meh. Not a van of the lyrics and vocals on this. 10. Here Today - 8.2 - alright. lyrics are very basic, but I can't tell if that's because they did them first. 11. I Just Wasn't Made for These Times - 8.0 - decent. 12. Pet Sounds - 8.6 - great instrumental. doesn't really sound like a pet, though. 13. Caroline, No -8.4 - love the slow winds on this.
Cosas buenas y cosas malas. Como todo lo que rompe con lo anterior y propone algo nuevo nunca es perfecto. Más importancia histórica en ese sentido que en otro.
This album makes me think of my dad in his 20s.
My college girlfriend loved this album and I just couldn't get into it back then so I had to try and get past my preconceptions. First listen I wasn't a fan but after a few more spins, it really grew on me. It varies in sound from baroque pop to a trippy fever dream. The album definitely feels dated and stuck in time but that's not a bad thing. It's a 3 for me but I'll bump it to a 4 because of the significance of the album.
Better than I remember
Slow album, but beautiful. Not something i would listen to everyday. Wouldnt it be nice, Would u still believe in me, God only knows, I know there's an answer are so fire.
Can still listen to...good harmonies
This is a hard album to rate. It's like writing a TripAdvisor review for the Eiffel Tower or something. Eh, you know what, 4/5 because there weren't enough pet sounds. There were some dog barks, but man's best friends are goldfish and I didn't hear any words of wisdom from our aquatic companions.
Fun album.
Listened Before? Yes This is a classic Beach Boys album (post Beach themed days) that is regarded by many as their greatest achievement. It contains two of their most long-lived singles Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows. The former being a dreamy ode from the viewpoint of lovers looking forward to the freedom marriage will afford them. The later being a melancholy inspection of how pointless life would be without their lover. I think this is a beautiful and perfectly sequenced album, and I understand the praise that it has received. Mostly the songs center around love in its various forms: hopeful bliss (Wouldn't It Be Nice), purgatory (I'm Waiting For the Day), heartbreak (Here Today), consumption (God Only Knows), and reflection of lost love (Caroline, No). The arrangements are varied with a lot of the vocal harmonization for which they are known. Also some psychedelic influences pop through in the vocal effects applied (see the echo in Still Believe In Me). All said, I hesitate to give this a 5 because, while I recognize its quality, I don't have a magnetic attraction to it like I have so many other albums. For this, I discount it to a 4. Added to Library? Yes
All time song as the leadoff track. Beatles-esque throughout. Sloop John B was another standout to me. Very pleasant, easy listening album with very few if any lows. I could see myself revisiting this album.
I've listened to this countless times and know it's known as one of the most influential albums of all time. Just has never completely clicked for me. The album has two absolute classics with "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "God Only Knows." The production on all the songs are pretty incredible and it's easy to see how this was super progressive in 1966. The placement of sounds on this record seem super precise and I really think it helps to listen with headphones. I really appreciate it and enjoy the songs a lot more while paying more attention to it. 3.5 but I'll round up for the random psychedelianess of it.
Can definitely hear why this album is considered a classic. The musical arrangements and lyrics are wonderful and even though it isn't what I typically listen to, I can still appreciate the talent that went into it.
Fun, familiar
•Not owned: Streaming •Meticulously balanced baroque pop album that also shakes the pop rulebook with the Let's Get Old ideal of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and the invoking of God in "God Only Knows," which also knows the exact length it should be (and still manages to end with a tumbling round outro). •4/5
Not my cup of tea when it came out. Still not but appreciate the effort for the times.
This is an all time classic album. Beach Boys paving there way for surgery rock. All around great.
Certainly a very important and influential album and there's no doubt it should be on this list. I enjoyed many of the tracks and will be coming back to it for sure. It's not necessarily my absolute favorite and I sometimes find the theme of love in the album a little excessive, but other than I think that it's a very important piece of art and I enjoyed it for the most part. 7/10
I do like it and know it's very influential and all but did find listening to the whole thing a bit tiresome. But giving it a. For
Feel good songs
There are some bangers here for sure, and it's a step in the right direction for them, but ultimately it just falls short of amazing for me. The songwriting and production really grew on me as I listened to it, though I kept thinking there was just something missing. Pet Sounds is held back by it's influence, and doesn't have enough punch to break through the barrier of the years to come. Favorites are Wouldn't It Be Nice, Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder), Let's Go Away for Awhile, and I Know There's An Answer.
Never sure about this album and can’t put finger on why.
listened all the way through, has some classics on it
Classics
Took a few listens to grow on me, but this album has no skips. Probably requires a bit of historical context to consider this an all-timer but can still be appreciated today. Best deep cut - I Know There's an An Answer
Classic album. Easy listening. Holds up well enough and was influential during its time.
Listened to this while playing Agricola. The album cover made this game feel very appropriate. How many albums can you name start with a key change in the first 15 seconds?! I had to stop and restart just to make sure I heard it right. Brian Wilson definitely loves to take pop structures and skew them to his own level of weird. There were so many familiar moments, and a few new treasures as well. Not perfect...but still a super fun listening experience!
God Only Knows is the best track The Beach Boys ever wrote and played in their entire career. Hence the 4.
Probably the best beach boys album, a great listen
Progressive pop, chamber pop, psychedelic pop, art rock
I was surprised by how great of an album this was! I did not expect to be a fan of the Beach Boys after listening to the 2008 album from Brian Wilson (which I did not enjoy). This album had more of the psychedelic sound that I enjoy from the mid- to late-60s. I will definitely listen to it again. Favorote Song(s): "Don't Talk", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows", "Here Today"
Another one of those famous albums that a lot of people talk about being groundbreaking / "their best work" / etc, but not everyone has listened to all the way through. Several of these songs are "oldies" radio staples I've heard hundreds of times, most I'd never heard before. Overall? I mean, it's the Beach Boys, so... cool I guess?
Yeah, now I can absolutely see how The Beach Boys are considered to be among the greatest pop bands of all time, after hearing this. The lyricism and instrumentation at play here is layered together in ways that must have been quite impressive for 1966. There are those vocal harmonies that they were known for, backed with the power of a whole orchestra. This album absolutely belongs on the top 1001 list. Personally though, I thought it was a nice listen, but I wouldn't call it my favourite. Favourite Beach Boys album I've heard so far maybe, but this is only the second Beach Boys album I've heard in its entirety so far. Some of it was a bit forgettable to me, and I think those fade-out outros sound lazy and cheap, and ruin the whole orchestral vibe of the songs a bit. Regardless, I think Pet Sounds is an album that is objectively impressive for the sheer complexity of its production and performance, and I may give it a full relisten again in the future. Favourite: Sloop John B
Naturally I know The Beach Boys big hits but had never listened to a studio album. A recent informative book on 1001 albums to listen to encouraged me to delve deeper into artists I’d never explored. This Pet Sounds starts with the heartfelt emotion of Wouldn’t It Be Nice. Those harmonies are out of this world, angelic in part. Hard to believe this album was recorded before I was born! Incidentally Frida of ABBA recorded a Swedish version of this song in her 1975 album Ensam. Her. Version is as outstanding as this! The album contains great lyrics, melancholy and stunning vocal arrangements and vocals. On first listen I like the feel of the whole album and a throw back to the style and time of the 60’s. Wilson’s writing throughout is superb. Why I waited so long to add this to my collection is mind blowing! I’m Waiting For The Day starts with a psychedelic intro, has a hippy vibe going in throughout. Love it! Hits a plenty here! I know Sloop John B, God Only Knows, Wouldn’t It Be Nice. Overall I like the vibe throughout, the vocal harmonies are superb. A new edition to my collection. 8 out of ten on a couple of full listens.
It WOULD be nice
Pretty solid album, includes the well known songs 'Wouldn't It be Nice' and 'God Only Knows'. My personal standouts are 'Here Today' and 'I Just Wasn't Made or These Times'.
Never been much of a fan of the Beach Boys surfin'/hot-roddin' stuff, but this is not the bubblegum sound of their earlier years. There is some of that, but there is more substance in the music, arrangements, and production that add up to a really solid album. Can't get enough of that "wall of sound."
Really enjoy this album, but the lack of flow between songs knocked it down a bit
Beatles, если бы ебали животных Хотя, Леннон на одном даже женился 8/10
A classic album that defined a decade of popular music. Very well written and sung.
I love the layered sounds of this record. I'm a fan.
I mean. I don’t know, I’m kind of sick of this project.
A great album. Opens with "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and continues with such great songs such as "Sloop John B" and "God Only Knows".
Such a classic album. "God only knows" is one of the best songs ever
"Pet Sounds" by The Beach Boys, released in 1966, is a groundbreaking album that pushed the boundaries of pop music. Brian Wilson's ambitious production and lush orchestrations create a sonic tapestry that remains unparalleled. The harmonies in tracks like "God Only Knows" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" are nothing short of celestial. While not immediately embraced upon its release, "Pet Sounds" has aged like fine wine, influencing generations of musicians. The album's emotional depth and musical innovation warrant a solid 4/5, acknowledging its enduring impact and contribution to the evolution of pop and rock music.
Great classic album.
This is such an iconic sound, instantly recognizable through the harmonies and singing. The hits are great with "God Only Knows" a step above the rest, such a great song. The non-hits were not at all as good and I found myself wanting to listen to any of the songs I knew again. I also had never thought about how similar some songs are to something "The Kinks" would do. Anyway this would normally be a 3 star album with all songs taken in to account but I feel an album with "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows" and "Sloop John B" deserves a 4.
clever and emotive, if plodding. boy bands of the early sixties, this early pre-synth psychedelic falls a little flat. while i do have this album on vinyl (gift), the orange “best of” pressing that was out at target gets a lot more turntable time, and i’m happy to leave a lot of these filler tracks on the cutting room floor. but man, when the beach boys hit, the baseball ends up in the next town over. my gut says 3.5 but to list up to 4 for the cultural significance, the experimentalism, the joy the two aforementioned vinyls have provided me, and honestly wouldn’t it be nice is such a shrine to pain. there’s a difference between liking and feeling seen on a record so even if i didn’t enjoy a lot of the finer sonic structure, i saw a ghost of sincerity, at least, flickering in and out.

Love this album. It's so happy, feels so good. Look at them - they're feeding goats!
Ba ba ba ba. Let's go away for awhile og God only knows e jævlig bra. Ellers e da litt meir varienrande, men jevnt over god s
Classic, holds up over time
At first listen this seems to be a vapid record, compiling adolescent love songs with little meaning. Utilizing golden boy voices to make thier point. The songs sound similar and it's easy to thi k they are all similar. However after a 2nd and 3rd listen, I focused a little bit more intensely on the co tent and found deeper meaning and variety in the songs. At times, this record is surprisingly deep, with lyrical content discussing a range of situations. Musically the record sounds great and inventive. Fave songs: wouldn't it be nice God only knows Caroline, no I just wasn't made fir these times
so inventive and forever fresh, but im not the biggest fan of every sound or chord choice yet
Previously rated: The Beach Boys Today! (4/5) ******************************* I listened to this once before and didn't think it deserved it's "best albums of all time" status, and I still think that though I enjoyed it more this time. I forgot Sloop John B was on this album. That song is amazing, well-crafted, I love it. Bumps the whole thing over the hump from 3 to 4.
Similar to C’est Chic, found songs I didn’t realise was theirs. Not bad at all either
I was going to list my favorite tracks but they're all brilliant. But if I had to pick: You Still Believe In Me, Waiting For the Day, & Sloop John B.
they say this is one of the top 10 albums - an answer to sgt peppers. one of my favorite songs ever (sloop john b) is on this record along with maybe two other hits, but everything else is kind of monotonous. i think the rest of the good beach boys stuff is sprinkled across their discography. if you consider sgt peppers, every single one of the songs on that record is a classic… who do you think won?
Few amazing songs. The rest are solid enough and an easy listen.
Great album for a nice sunny day. Some songs felt a little lackluster, I generally like songs that have more feeling to them. A very universal album overall, I don’t think people could ‘hate’ this, it isn’t amazingly memorable but I did not dislike a single song. A crowd pleaser!
Really good overall. Got better as it went on. God Only Knows is exceptional.
I like this one! It struck me as a good album to study to. 21/10/2023
Very beachy
Listened to it before as it usually is on top album lists. I think it's outdated. It probably was groundbreaking back in the days but by todays standards I think there are better albums. I still think it's a good album and there's some bangers, almost like a greatest hits album.
Almost feels like song snippets at times, but extremely catchy and fun overall. Sloop John B has special memories for me with my grandpa.
Brian Wilson is a treasure. This album rules.
Partly heard before Saved 8/13 Top track: God Only Knows
It's ok.
Beautiful album. 4/5
God only knows and sloop John b.
There's definitely some great tracks on here. There's a few which sound massively dated, and not in the good way. But overall there's a lot to like and not a lot to object to.
Wouldn't It Be Nice - 7.5/10 You Still Believe in Me - 7.5/10 That's Not Me - 7.5/10 Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) - 7.5/10 I'm Waiting for the Day - 7.5/10 Let's Go Away for Awhile - 7.5/10 Sloop John B - 7.5/10 God Only Knows - 8/10 I Know There's an Answer - 8/10 Here Today - 7.5/10 I Just Wasn't Made for These Times - 8/10 Pet Sounds - 7.5/10 Caroline No - 7.5/10 TOTAL - 99/130
I like um
4.5
Surprisingly enjoyable
There are a several songs that are absolute masterpieces, but I also find a lot of it boring. So tough call on rating.
Great album
Classic. Studio as an instrument. Layered and rich.
Very nice album
Good but cannot be played often
perfection
beach boys
Pretty good album, but let's be honest, the Beach Boys were irrelevant to my generation before the Fat Boys covered them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-kAnNgqN9o
The surf pop rock sound of The Beach Boys is long gone. This is an album I feel deep down. It’s like I’m looking through a window at Brian Wilson’s inner angst, but the window is open so I can feel the emotions blowing through the screen, surrounding me as they whisk by. Wouldn’t It Be Nice and Sloop John B are my favorite tracks here, mostly because they feel the most upbeat. There are plenty of other good tracks too. In this particular instance, I would like the album more if there were a couple more positive feeing tunes, but then it wouldn’t be as authentic. As an aside, it’s strange that Brian Wilson composed the album almost entirely without the rest of the band, but it is still under The Beach Boys name.
Still holds up

Really influential and a more mature beach boys album. Their best for sure
4.5/5 9/10
I get why this album is so highly praised. Great harmonies, amazing production values, great song writing. And I love how they manage to cram so much sound, in so many layers, into each song without it sounding muddy or overdone. I can totally see how ahead of its time this must have sounded when it came out. However, most of the songs were indistinguishable from each other. Extra stars for "God Only Knows" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice".
listened to again every time i listen to this it gets better and better also i recently got to listen to this in atmos and it's nice
really good album. happy as fuck (mostly) songs are all super interesting too Rating - 7.8 - Wouldn't It Be Nice - Don't Talk - That's Not Me
Starts off w/ Wouldn't It Be Nice, a classic track. A few weaker tracks follow before I'm pleasantly surprised by such songs as I'm Waiting for the Day, Sloop John B and Here Today. Overall a pleasant album where I can see myself re-listening to at least half of the songs
very likable album
7/13, 54%
Thought this was really nice; definitely want to check out more of their backlog.
Pretty classic album
Wouldn't it be Nice? God Only Knows Caroline, No Sloop John B Pet Sounds
Listen to this album. Today, it may sound like nothing out of the ordinary. But it is. Then go watch the biopic about Wilson and the band. It's very eye-opening, sad, and revelatory.
Can see why it’s a classic but did get bored at points
Braaf, maar wel verschrikkelijk goed gemaakt. Niet voor niets een klassieker.
It's only recently that I've begun to appreciate The Beach Boys more fully, and that's entirely due to listening to the incredible podcast series, A History Of Rock Music In 500 Songs, which devotes a handful of episodes to songs by The Beach Boys. The series also discusses this album and helps place it in the context of its time's music, culture, and society, as well as showing how it influenced so many artists at the time and to follow, including the Beatles. Listening to it now, once again, with that better understanding of it, I enjoy it so much more. It's truly innovative and outstanding. I strongly encourage people to give the podcast series a try and to have the patience to start at Episode 1 and listen in order from there. I promise it's absolutely worth it. https://500songs.com/podcast/flying-home-by-the-benny-goodman-sextet/
Very pleasing interplay between instrumentals and vocals
Very quality album. Probably the most innovative yet underrated album because of the Beatles hype from the time. Production is incredible. Fun listen.
Classic
Klasse poprock, catchy, masser af kor, velopbygget
The instrumentation on this album is lush and gorgeous, definitely a tier above the kind of pop The Beach Boys started out with.
This album really grew on me over the course of listening to it a couple times today. I had heard it in full for the first time last month and didn't care for it much, but today I listened to it louder and caught a lot of the details I hadn't before. I get why people like it now even if this midtempo chamber pop style isn't really my thing most of the time. 4 stars just because of personal preference but Pet Sounds is undoubtedly one of the most important and influential albums ever.
“Wouldn’t it be nice” if all the songs didn’t sounds kinda the same. Sorry I feel mean saying that :p
Classic!!
I wrote this review while I was lying in bed, just like Brian Wilson did. Considered an all time classic by many, it’s not fully my cup of tea. Like half of my cup of tea..wouldn’t it be nice if it was my full cup of tea? Some songs were actually really great, like God Only Knows is elite. I had a 3 but I bumped to a 4
Obviously this is a pretty classic album and I can say that it did not disappoint. Really futuristic pop for the time it came out and the fusion of a lot of different genres comes through in a very interesting way. I would say that I liked it a lot but I don't think it is as perfect as many people think it is. There aren't any bad songs per se but I do think the vocals can get slightly annoying after a while and some of the songs are a bit close sounding. Still great and is a 9-9.5/10 but not the clear 10/10 many people call it. The best songs to me were "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "You Still Believe In Me", "That's Not Me", "I'm Waiting For The Day", "God Only Knows" and "Here Today".
It's pretty good but I didnt like it that much
Not my personal favorite, but there are some incredible soundscapes here.
Veel depressievere teksten dan ik dacht dat die hadden.
One of the best - if not *the* best - aspects of this entire exercise is learning or re-learning the history of popular music; e.g. why certain albums are considered classics, or even lost/should-have-been classics. Pet Sounds is always placed on "greatest/alltime best" album lists but aside from a few unavoidably huge singles, I'd wondered why I never listened to it or even heard it while growing up (or knew anyone that owned it) ... I'm reminded that the album was actually out of print for years before reissued on CD in the 90s. I never could get into the Beach Boys. Or as a kid even get beyond "I *really* don't like the Beach Boys" - they always seemed intertwined in my brain with minor league baseball promo nights and songs that sounded like commercial jingles. But let's go - I enjoyed and was surprised by their "Surf's Up" album so keeping an open mind here... "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "God Only Knows" are really just great pieces of music that exist beyond any pop or rock definitions. And my first time through it today almost restricted my view to these particular singles which I already knew well. But on my second pass - and a pointedly uninterrupted one at that - things kinda clicked. I like this far more as a full or singular work rather than a collection of songs. It's an experience; almost dream-like with heavy usage of major 7th and complex chords, key changes, and unique harmonies. I'm not a fan of some of the cheesy/dated lyrics which I only seem to notice when the music dips a bit for me (e.g. "You Still Believe In Me") but it really is an impressive body of work overall, especially considering the time (1966). And it's pretty apparent that a lot of conceptual albums to follow wouldn't or couldn't have existed without this preceding them. One example is Jellyfish: one of my favourite bands of all-time - they could never have existed without this album. Not a fan of some of the overly-syrupy sounds but it was era-appropriate. Also not into Mike Love's lead vocals but when he's kept at a minimum I'm all-in. TL;DR: I get it now. 8/10 4 stars.
Pop perfection. 4.5 rounded down to 4 as I'm not always in the mood for this delightful brand of sugary sweetness. Not quite The Beatles but so so close.
old sounds and shiet much better than i expected
Dennis Wilson feeding an invisible goat is one of the greatest mysteries in American history. Fav tracks: wouldn't it be nice, I'm waiting for the day, lets go away for a while, god only knows, here today, I just wasn't made for these times, Caroline no
Some great songs. God Only Knows, Wouldn't it Be Nice, Sloop John B The rest is good. 4/5
Pet Sounds is another album that I wish I could have heard in context of the time that it was released. I have listened to this album before, because so many people have cited this album as a significant album in their own musical experience. There are tracks from this album that I have heard many times. I'm not a super Beach Boys fan, but "Sloop John B" and "God Only Knows" are tracks that I have sought out to listen to again on my own, and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is close to that same list. There are some interesting sounds from the Beach Boys on this album - it's not just the happy, surf music of previous albums. (There is a weird love song in "You Still Believe in Me" that takes me away from fully imersing myself into the experience of this album... the Beach Boys have a strange way of writing lyrics to try to sweet talk to young girls.) Although the Beach Boys are not regulars in what I would listen to, there is enough to explore on this album that I will round up to a full 4 stars.
Listened Before? N So this is the famous Beach Boys masterpiece. I've heard a few songs from it before, but never the whole thing. Honestly, it's got a great vibe. Pretty low-key and the vocals are (of course) impressive. I highly enjoyed it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Wouldn't It Be Nice
Great album. I’m sure the original was much shorter though 😉
album goes hard
This was a lot more interesting and enjoyable than I'd expected. Not the most memorable album either, but definitely a pleasant listen for me.
Great album I have heard a number of times
<3 <3 <3
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Wouldn’t it be nice, God only knows
very overrated but the highlights are SUPER high
Great album, I like it a lot! The production is obviously a highlight, some of the songs don't really do it as much for me as the highlights here, but I'll always be happy to have this on.
Heard it before, like it a lot more now. Favorite song: “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”.
Extremely good album, filled with extremely good songs. The harmonies are so tight, and the musicality is incredibly fresh.
This is really not my style, but i'm glad i'm listening to it. There's some awesome musical stuff going on here! There's timpani, sitar, triangle, tuba, duyuglar (horse hoof clapping sound), the list goes on.
хммм 60ее я люблю
Classic
A pretty good album. I enjoyed listening to it and it has some great songs, but it’s not a favorite of mine
Pop music go brrrrr
This is a great album. It starts to dig into Brian Wilson's psyche and show maturity as a composer. I prefer the sunshine, cars, and beaches of the earlier Beach Boys but I appreciate where the boys wanted to go. I also love the production of this album with the Wrecking Crew group of studio musicians.
An enjoyable album with amazing harmonies and instrumentation. I wish the subject matter were different and not as one-note/poppy as the usual 60s stuff (aka love songs). The second half of the album branched out into other topics, which was great. But even though I wasn't a fan of the typical sappy love songs, I looooove God Only Knows (how could I not??)
Great great album. Good Only Knows is my fav Beach Boys song.
While I don't feel the need to listen through both the mono and stereo versions of the songs, I did appreciate that they were included. Great album.
Hermoso disco.
Mielestäni sisältää yhden maailman parhaista rakkauslauluista, joka tyylikkäästi alkaa sanoilla "I may not always love you..." : D Kuuntelin tämän tarkituksella lahjaksi saamaltani mono LP:ltä ja jotenkin se tuntuu spessummalta. 4/5
Vastly overhyped. It's very good, but that's it.
Baller
I know, the album's title is supposed to be a pun, but the album cover is horrible. Pet Sounds was heavily influenced by the Beatles' Rubber Soul, but while the latter supported its music with an imaginative cover photo, the picture on the former is just plain silly and might have been a factor if the initial sales figures left something to be desired. Well, on to the music .... Brian Wilson set out to make a pop album with no filler, topping Rubber Soul (and probably Revolver, which had come out in the meantime). In that, he succeeded. This is the only album I know from that period that is on a similar level as the Beatles were then. There are no bad, and a couple of really great tracks here - Wouldn't It Be Nice, Sloop John B, and especially God Only Knows come readily to mind. While there is no bad or filler material, some of the tracks are not quite as good as the ones on the A list, but that shouldn't distract from the fact that this album, musically, is more than solid. And it really helps that there is not a single surfer anthem anywhere to be found. 4/5
I first listened to this in preparation for Brian Wilson’s ‘Pet Sounds in full’ set at Primavera a few years back. We were still queueing up during the first few tracks, but it was only really Wouldn’t It Be Nice that I was sad to miss (the second half of the album is stronger; God Only Knows, like Good Vibrations, deserves all the praise it gets). I appreciate that the lush instrumentation was particularly sophisticated for its time, and I don’t mind the introverted nature of most of the tracks, but occasionally it’s all a bit *too* placid. Still, a solid 4 for attainment / 4.5 for effort.
Nice, sounds more dated though than others from the era
fajne, ale trochę seksistowskie miejscami
There's a reason this is known as the teenage symphony to God.
In spotify it just goes to the stereo version of it so I only listened to the Mono/Remaster part of it. It was a good album, some good songs came after Let's go for a while, and I enjoyed just the vocals of The Beach Boys on their 11th album. so a good 7/10
Beach boys getting more serious here as for the arrangement and lyrics are concerned. Love it. A true classic
Well this is one of the classics and may sound a bit dated however it was one of the defining rock/pop albums of the 60's.
A classic Sixties pop album. Not sure what else can be said about this that hasn't been said already. Some great songs, and those harmonies...so good I played it twice (Spotify has the mono and then the stereo version in one reissue). Caroline, No was the surprise here, having passed me by before. Love the ambient sound at the end. Very evocative.
groovy, love carolina!
I'm just not the biggest fan of the beach boys 3 God Only Knows and Wouldn't It Be Nice gets it to a four, but no more than that. 4
Really fun and interesting listen. Really enjoyed the instrumentation and layered backing track and the vocals and harmonising. Solid pop album, but with some songs with boring melodies or lyrics I don't care for.
I just started this , and I'm disappointed in Pet Sounds being my first suggested album Mike Love looks pretty thrilled to be included in the photo shoot Is this really the Beach Boy's best album?
It’s a great album, but it’s not as good as many have claimed. There are a few tracks that feel like fillers, don’t talk and waiting for the day being the ones that spring to mind. Still an enjoyable album, only worth 4 stars though
Quite a good consistent album, a few mediocre songs. This album is good but I really don’t see it as one of the best albums of its time. Album cover is also horrific. My rating - 7.5/10 Need to be on this list - 9/10
Have always tried to get this album but have never been able to fully arrive at the place everyone else talks about. I just can't seem to connect with it like I feel like a should (which is most likely the issue in the first place)
The Beach Boys remind me of being a little boy, with my dad listening to them often. That being said, I don't think I have ever listened to this album front to back. I have heard that this album is considered one of the greatest albums of all time. So far, that seems like a stretch. It sounds pretty dated and even older than 1966 to me. And the fading out to end each song seems odd and ruins the flow a bit. But all that being said, there is a lot going on in each song, which creates a nice full and complex sound. Every song has the light and poppy, undeniable sound of the Beach Boys. And even though I complained about songs fading out, there is a nice sonic flow and narrative that works throughout the entire album. The wikipedia article on this album was an interesting companion read while listening to the album which gave a deeper understanding of exactly why this album and its influence on the rest of music that followed is a major factor in the acclaim. I can appreciate that.
Great listening, some amazing songs on this album.
If you listen to anything earlier from the Beach Boys, I think it'll just show the distance they went from there til here. Insanely lush, gorgeous, and dynamic. Favorite tracks: "God Only Knows", "Sloop John B", "Don't Talk"
I like this a lot though I’m not sure it’s the luminary icon of pop perfection it’s sometimes held up to be. To me it seems that, as often as it transcends genre into the realms of High Art (which is pretty often), it also gets lost in its own overly complicated and intricate production.
0/5 Drecksalbum Wer sowas hört sollte aufhören seine mechanische Tastatur in Klausuren mitzunehmen.
classic album. the beatles shit a brick when this came out
Ok
This is fine, it's really fine, and perhaps the well-known songs I know well, and I'm not such of a BB fan to give it five stars when the slighly less well-known ones don't make me sit up.
Damn, here's one of the big hallmark classics I've been waiting on. Billed as one of the first big pop concept albums (Frank Sinatra would like a word), this had a lot of influence across the music scene, including on the Beach Boys' rival British analogue the Beatles. I may be American, but I'd personally take the Beatles over the Beach Boys for their variety, but the Beatles could never touch the California beach tracks that these guys do so well. Really no sign of that style on here, but it's an excellent project in its own right. I can hear the ambition echoing through every track. Lots of wacky sounds and instruments at play, but still grounded in yearning love-pop stuff that was super familiar. It didn't resonate with me as heavily as some other classics do, and sadly I'd say the Beatles win the album battle as well, but it's undeniably great. Some bangers made it out of this one too so there's something for everyone. Favorite tracks: Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, You Still Believe in Me, I'm Waiting for the Day, Pet Sounds. Album art: The guys at a petting zoo. Seen it a billion times, always unassuming. I think it's a pretty weak cover that doesn't at all convey the ambition within. But it's fine to look at. 4.5/5
"Wouldn't it be nice" ti fa capire subito il mood dell'album. Oddio poi diventa più cupo
Great feelgood album. The works behind the vocal harmonies are just insane.
It's a really important and historic album. The arrangements and the production are incredible, we feel that Brian Wilson gave everything on this record. Unfortunately, it's not my favorite of the Beach Boys. Sometimes the overly polished look turns into a tacky mess. But there's no doubt, great album.
Great sounds

After listening to the Strong Songs episode on "God Only Knows", I really appreciate that track. Trying to turn on my ears to the other tracks on the album. Not sure I am sophisticated enough to completely get it but I did enjoy this album. Even listened to the mono and stereo mixes. Definitely prefer the stereo mix.
Classic
Classic
I recognize the immense talent and production value but . . . the Beach Boys I like are the hit singles. When they aren't singing about surfing they're singing about who-fucking-cares.
A very good album, but it doesn't quite reach the heights.
Classic.
kinda boring
A little long but a great album.
A classic, lots of layers of sounds, many details, very enjoyable
Surprisingly deep and interesting. I knew the couple of hits going into the album, but the rest of the songs showed an unexpected maturity from The Beach Boys.
that was nice, although i'm not a fan of classic rock music Liked "Wouldn't It Be Nice" a lot
Never was a big fan of The Beach Boys but can see why this album shows up on everyone’s ’must listen’ list after a couple of plays - interesting alt. sounds and cutting lyrics.
A surprisingly awesome album. Sloop John B blew my mind as a beach boys song as it has existed in my head rent free for so many years without me knowing where it came from!
Classic sounds. Hard to beat. Sloop John B is the best track in my opinion.
I know the "hits" of the Beach Boys but never really listened to a full album, again with the exception of greatest hits album. I was pleasantly surprised with how much i enjoyed this album that I will be going back and checking out more of what the have to offer.
This is ok… not the masterpiece it’s toted as. Decent tunes, but a bit twee in places.
Definitely enjoyable
Squam

Pretty awesome and I dont know really know much about the beach boys besides the manson ancid days involvement. So yeah, Ive heard this is their/a masterpiece. I liked it very much, I would say nearly every track is a winner, I listed to the stereo version. Some more songs I can see leading towards experimentation. The album has a nice vibe of groovers, mooders, and boppers.
nice.
sloop john b-ery good
Klassiskt? Flera man känner igen, och Sloop John B var en oväntad historielektion.
-Did not hear the sound of even one goddamn pet -Honestly not as mind blowing as it is claimed to be. The songs are supposed to be super complex but I don't know if I'm cracked out of my mind but they don't seem that crazy to me. -"Wouldn't It Be Nice" is nice, but it is also the only song I had heard from the album before. the only other song that stood out in any capacity was "Sloop John B" -Just not super crazy
Wouldn't It Be Nice is a great masterclass in harmony. I'm Waiting For Today has a couple weird lyrics but is a solid song. Let's Go Away For A While is a song? God Only Knows is a killer song. Caroline, No is another cool track. Definetly worth a respin. Weird album though.
Interesting sound
Pop from another planet. Just amazing.
The thing I love about The Beach Boys is that they were doing something very different from what so many boy bands were doing in the early to mid 60s. Pet Sounds took that to a whole new level with their instrumentation and harmonies. Upon listening to this album all the way through for the first time in a long time there are a few songs that aren’t top notch, but Wouldn’t It Be Nice and God Only Knows will always be in my top favorite songs of all time. Brian Wilson’s mental struggles definitely created some of the greatest music of an entire generation.
Honestly not much to say. It’s a classic who doesn’t like this album
Lots of songs I had forgotten about (I know there’s an answer came back to me in the middle of the night after listening to this!)
Lot of goats on that cover.
It is outrageous that this was created in the mid-60s. I find the Beach Boys in general a bit schmaltzy, but this is really well put together, and Wouldn't It Be Nice / God Only Knows are all-time classics (God Only Knows being the better of the two). Could get a 5, but I just don't like their type of music enough to put it up with the best albums I've ever listened to. 4 it is.
Great to hear some of these classics.
The Beach Boys are truly a different beast to The Beatles, and what a beast they are. Still, it's pretty tempting to refer to this album as their "Revolver" and the unfortunately removed "Good Vibrations" as their "Tomorrow Never Knows", both in terms of greatness and music style changes. Overall, "Pet Sounds" made me go "wow!", but not "WOW!!!" as most people claimed they did. Most of it are two minute pop songs with great instrumentals and incredible productions. It's great, albeit generic at some places. I enjoyed it, though not as much as I enjoyed "Surf's Up".
Some very nice layered music all the way through
A fun classic. The Beach Boys at their best
60s music for me is usually completely overshadowed by The Beatles. This is great. Obviously the singles are the best, but it's all good
So. Much. Reverb.
This album slaps. Forget sometimes how much bands like Animal Collective rip from this sound (and sound terrible doing it)
Muy buen álbum
