Highway 61 Revisited

I’ve scored previous Bob Dylan albums very poorly. Nothings going to change here. Why, when an artist sounds exactly the same from one LP to another, does their need to be multiple albums from them on this list. If you’ve listened to one Dylan album you don’t need further examples cause spoiler alert...he sounds exactly the same. In summary, it goes without saying this album was as boring as the rest... 2 Stars!

Just kinda dull.

First off, let me stipulate that Bob Dylan is one of a handful of great lyricists of the rock era, and certainly the most political, and some of Dylan's most trenchant lyrics can be found on Highway 61 Revisited. Now, not everyone felt that way. Syd Barrett wrote a hilarious take down of Dylan called The Bob Dylan Blues: Got the Bob Dylan blues And the Bob Dylan shoes And my clothes and my hair's in a mess But you know I just couldn't care less Goin' to write me a song 'Bout what's right and what's wrong 'Bout god and my god and all that Quiet while I make like a cat 'Cause I'm a poet, don't ya know it And the wind, you can blow it Cause I'm Mr. Dylan, the king And I'm free as a bird on the wing Roam from town to town Guess I get people down But I don't care too much about that 'Cause my gut and my wallet are fat Make a whole lotta dough But I deserve it though I've got soul and a good heart of gold So I'll sing about war in the cold 'Cause I'm a poet, don't ya know it And the wind, you can blow it Cause I'm Mr. Dylan, the king And I'm free as a bird on the wing Now, aside from his lyrics, Dylan isn't a bad songwriter. No, I take that back. His compositions are often sturdy and occasionally inspired, if still fairly basic. And the covers of his work, by artists as varied as Hendrix and Keith Jarrett, prove that point. But as a performing artist, Dylan's charms are way overstated. His sneering talk singing may put across his lyrics, but musically, it kind of sucks. Ditto his guitar playing, ditto his harp playing. There's only so much Michael Bloomfield on guitar and Al Kooper on organ can do to save Highway 61 Revisited, and this is far from their strongest work, anyway. There's a little more energy on Highway 61 Revisited than on Dylan's previous albums, which makes the music more bearable, but to call this "hard bluesy rock" is ludicrous. Once again, an artist's reputation distorts the critical evaluation of their work. I'll give this a 2.5 out of 5 and only because of Dylan's abilities as a songwriter.

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Like a Rolling Stone, Tombstone Blues Cutting Edge: Desolation Row Overall Notes: The songwriting is really good, but holy hell batman I can't take the harmonica. I normally have no strong feelings about the instrument, but for whatever reason it sounds horrible and it single handedly ruins songs on this album (Queen Jane Approximately is the chief example of it). I don't know if it's the mix or my speakers or what it was about it but the screeching in my ear was unbearable. I can't believe that the cool kids once listened to harmonicas and a rambling man.

I wish I liked him better. He's quite the poet, and some of the songs are kind of blues-y and have decent rhythms, but his voice just fucking annoys me, and his phrasing too. This is a 2/5 or maybe 1/5 for me. Let's say 2, cause his older stuff is worse.

Look, Like A Rolling Stone is great. But then immediately after that we have Tombstone Blues and we are back into Dylan's impenetrable imagery for the rest of the album: "The ghost of Belle Starr, she hands down her wits / To Jezebel, the nun, she violently knits / A bald wig for Jack the Ripper who sits / At the head of the chamber of commerce". And it's all like this, verse after verse, song after song. It's just intolerable, a word that also describes the harmonica shrieking directly into my ears during Queen Jane Approximately. This is the fourth Bob Dylan album I have heard and I had frankly heard enough before this. I get that he's influential, I get that people love him, but also I strongly, strongly believe that if you've heard one classic Dylan album, you've heard them all. My star rating reflects my enjoyment. I did not enjoy this at all.

This album didn’t really move me in any way. There were a couple of standouts (“It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry” and “Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues”) but not much to add.

I can understand why this album was popular it seems more like a decade forward than it was released.

Starting this project has made me realise how much I hate Bob Dylan! The sound of his voice and the length of his albums are unbearable!

I could not wait for it to be over. It's the same song over and over and the most frustrating harmonica I have ever had to listen to. Sounds like the velvet underground if they sucked.

I once heard someone say that Bob Dylan is an excellent songwriter who should have stuck to that instead of singing his own music. I subscribe to that line of thinking. It was fun to hear some of the more bluesy music, but I still end up thinking that most bob dylan songs sound the same and are skips. Like a rolling stone slaps but I didn’t realize how long it goes on. I recognize the influence of the album and of bob dylan as a whole, but I won’t be revisiting this album besides “rolling stone”. 1/5

I think Bob Dylan's voice might actually be one of the most unpleasant sounds that it's possible for a human being to make. I am honestly baffled how anyone can enjoy listening to this guy sing. The backing music is repetitive and unimaginative, but it does at least occasionally throw in a random guitar (or other instrument) flourish to break things up a bit. The trademark Bob Dylan harmonica is ever present and as shit as it always was. Why does the title track have a random siren whistle thrown in? God I hate this crap so much.

3/7 bob dylan albums down we're so back! welcome to "1 Bob Dylan album a month" (for context I've had 3 bob dylan albums in 100 days please help me.) what's special about this one? - he still can't sing. his voice is making me look at the ibuprofen longingly - he's still blasting the harmonica without any consideration of my poor ears... god this ibuprofen is tempting - groundbreaking lyrics where no one seems to be sure what he's on about and there's conflicting interpretations and trying to make sense of it is giving me a headache. ibuprofen time! and we're only one song in! one thing I will give credit is the band is more interesting then his other album on the rare occasion when he shuts up and isn't making me wince with the harmonica. very rare occurrence normally I'm excited to see a >10 minute song at the end of the album but that's currently looking like the moon from majora's mask. this has to be a joke right 1 thank god it's over

I respect the storytelling and way with words. Desolation Row is the apex in that sense, I think. With that said, I barely made it through the album. It not only failed to function as music to me - to entertain me AND/OR make me feel something - but it actively aggravated me in fact. It was that annoying.

God he's boring

I simply cannot stand Bob Dylan's voice. It's like he picks a note for each song and insists on making every single word he sings be that note. Every line sounds like he's struggling to get it out, like if he doesn't put a little more "umph" into it at the end he wouldn't be able to finish the sentence. The frustrating thing is I liked some of the instrumentation on this one. In Tombstone Blues there was a moment where the guitar came in with a solo and my head started bobbing, but then Bob comes in with that "euuuuurrrrah" screechy thing he does to let the world know he's about to sing another line and my nose automatically wrinkled like I'd smelled something offensive.

Don't understand the hype around Bob Dylan... This album tastes like saltwater crackers. I don't mind the genre, but the actual melody, lyrics and vocals are so damn bland.

My heart sunk when I saw another one of Bob Dylan's NINE albums on this list. Do we really need nine of his albums here? Especially when they all sound the same? No. However, I try to be a positive person, so I gave “Highway 61 Revisited” a go. Oh dear. As always, Bob Dylan’s voice is not good. The music is passable, but not as good as we are told. The end product is grating and invasive. It actively bugged me. I could even accept boring, background music but this crosses into irksome. I said it before, but I agree with that well respected Irish journalist who said that Bob Dylan was just “a busker who got lucky”. He’s absolutely right. BD is not a good singer, he’s not a good musician and he’s not a genius wordsmith. He’s not even mediocre. His songs are so simple. I urge everyone out there: stand up for yourself. If you think Bob Dylan’s music is rubbish, be proud of your opinion and admit it. Don’t let the hipsters pressure you into lying about your feelings. They are wrong, you are right.

He can't sing for shit

I'm giving this a chance only because it's the beginning of his electronic phase. I'm expecting it to be just mildly less irritating than the acoustic stuff. While not totally pushing me over to "flip table over" mode, this was still a very grating listen for me. While this album came out and made into mainstream, bands like Blue Cheer, The Sonics and The Premiers we're making their moves and turning pages by the handlful. While mainstream folk/cuntry people might feel this is groundbraking musical evolution, I'm saying this is just copying ideas already happening fast in the underground. Anyway. It's still him telling stories, now it's just over a bit more fuller set of musical performances and I don't really care for it.

I listened to far too much of this album, as I sighed to myself, returning to my work computer after my far too short break, working at the job that I need to have to pay for my house, so that my family is supported, and maybe they don't have to experience the crushing of the...9 to 5....twing twang twing guitar solo God, how irritating. I understand activism is important, but at least make the music sound good. Made it 80% of the way through.

I mean its fine for the genre it is, the 1st track and the 5th are definetly the strong suits, I like the ragtime piano and harmonica but everything else kinda feels like filler. the last track being 11 minutes long is just absurd. idk id say like a 4.5? its respected in its genre but i dont exactly like this genre, i wouldnt go back to it ever.

I understand his influence on generations of artists, but his voice is the worst and I'm not even impressed with his most of his song writing skills, I just find him so EXTREMELY Overrated!... But at least this was a tolerable time period in his musical career... BUT! I'd definitely smash a chair over the head of any guy who goes towards the jukebox to put this garbage on, thus starting a bar fight. 1 Star regardless of his album.

There’s only 1001 albums in this thing and it’s unbelievable they would waste so many entries on this worthless fraud.

It was at this moment where I realized that I am not a Bob Dylan fan. His vocal delivery makes it hard for me to get into the lyrics since his voice sounds like he’s on the verge of falling asleep in the recording studio. Also, the rusty harmonica solos give me a fucking headache. I won’t deny the influence this record had on the political side of things, but this was a pretty jarring first listen for me. Maybe someday it’ll all make sense to me, but for now, I’m giving it a hard pass.

The more I’m subjected to Bob Dylan’s music, the more I dislike it. As much as I try to find the appeal, I simply can’t. His voice is terribly grating and I cannot get past it. His writing/lyricism also has the tendency to be too pretentious.

Listening to Bob Dylan is a chore. It is the opposite of fun. I know he's a good poet, but I can read lyrics on Genius and skip the interminable tedium of... this.

Sometimes, I lay awake at night wondering if there's a god, and if he's kind and loving. Usually, I wake up in the morning and I've forgotten all about that, and go ahead and start listing to my album of the day. Sometimes, though, I get a Bob Dylan album, and it really makes me think again. Right now, I think if there is a god, he certainly isn't benevolent. If he was, he wouldn't make me listen to Dylan and his hellish harmonica.

Bob Dylan? Not a fan. Let’s see if this album changes my mind … Halfway through, my mind is still firmly anti-Dylan. I feel like Dylan’s writing is an inside joke. Like there’s some real substance there, but I walked up in the middle of a deep conversation and was given no context, just made to listen to the remainder. I think you just really have to like Dylan’s voice to truly appreciate him. I just don’t. It’s like nails on a chalkboard to me the majority of the time (he has a few songs I can listen to without desiring earplugs). The musicianship on the album is undeniable. There’s some great guitar work and excellent harmonica. None of that trumps Dylan’s voice. Unfortunately. My mind continues to be firmly anti-Dylan. Oh lord, do I dare look to see how many Dylan albums are on this list?

Nope! The harmonica hurts my ears.

As Bob Dylan goes, this album is good. As good music goes, this is not. This is one of Bob’s most tolerable albums. The folksy side is toned down a pitch and the bluesy rock is turned up a degree. Bob is widely recognized as one the greatest lyricist ever, that is something I have tried really hard in my life to agree with, but I cannot. He changed the way lyrics were written in western music (or at least music sang in English). His influence is undeniable but; he has a shit voice, can never find a real melody, the band/music is never anything amazing, and the production values are always lacking (compared to his contemporaries). This album has a few toe tapping moments but is quickly ruined by his squealing, nasally voice or a high pitched harmonica mixed to be waaaay too loud. Most of his singing is to a melody of a 2nd grader reading a haiku to his class about his favorite Disney character. I have tried to like Bob, I truly have. I’ve listen to this album several times before today, as well as many others. My conclusion is that either all Bob fans are in on a giant troll job or they all intentionally contrarian. I almost always have laugh out loud moments while listening to a Dylan record, this one at least five moments like that. This album is in so many Top 10, 20 list and it is astonishing to me that any record that has Thin Man and Desolation Road on it could be considered for anything other than a crime against music. Ballad of a Thin Man is a prime example of why Bob is trash. Those lyrics are just bad, period - I will take objectors! And Desolation Road is a run-on ramblings of someone who thinks what’s he’s saying is cool/relevant/worthwhile. It is grade A pretension at its finest. 1.8/10 #61/1001

First album in the Dylathon. I don't actually know where to begin with this guy, so I'm gonna check the book. A departure from traditional folk stylings towards the rockstar image Dylan would later build. Artful, literate. The vocals are shit. Like, really, really bad. There's probably some merit to the lyrics, though I'm not keen on listening to them when I'm constantly being rubbed down with the auditory equivalent of sandpaper. This, unfortunately, means that I am SOL when it comes to discussing this album, as I imagine that the lyrics and songwriting are the main draws. Instrumentally, this album leaves a lot to be desired. The harmonica from hell is the most egregious musical showing, though there are other baffling instrumental choices such as the organ and sub-par guitars, which contribute towards an overall displeasing sound. Pair this with the excruciating length of the song and you have a huge swing and a miss. I really did not like this album and I'm worried about the six future albums that I have yet to wade through.

If you take 2 steps back from the microphone, the harmonica might actually be enjoyable.

I’m so sorry Timothee chalamet, he sounds SOOO WHINY and the way he is singing like he’s forcing something out of his throat just isn’t sounding right to me. The harmonica playing needs to take many lessons from the piano man because I’ve never hated how much a harmonica sounds, even worse than a kid with a harmonica from the dollar store.

Mais ... je n'aime vraiment pas la voix de BD, ni sa façon de chanter. Et comme malheureusement il chante tout le temps (les chorus sont rares et très courts), l'écoute n'est pas très agréable. Soooo.... I can see my pleas for harmonica extraction have fallen on deaf ears... which mine now are... Is Dylan's M.O. to lead with one well-written (and badly performed) classic, and then fill the rest of the album with rambling garbage? If so, couldn't we have given him just a greatest hits entry and saved some room for other groups (possibly of non-Anglo origin) that absolutely should have appeared on this list but likely don't? Unfortunately for this album, my generosity for Dylan's songwriting was spent on the last rating.

I don't give a flying fuck about this album. In my 29 years on this earth, I’ve listened to my fair share of music, and Highway 61 Revisited is hands down one of the most disappointing disasters I’ve ever encountered. Bob Dylan’s vocals on this record are, without exaggeration, some of the worst I have ever sadly experienced, making every track an exercise in sheer auditory torture. I'll admit there are a few fleeting moments where the album shows a glimmer of what others seem to celebrate. Some of the lyrics are clever on paper, and a couple of the guitar riffs manage to hint at the potential of raw musical genius. These sparse moments, however, are so few and far between that they hardly make a dent in my overall assessmentFrom the very first track, I found myself struggling to connect with anything Dylan was trying to say. The lyrics, which are often hailed as groundbreaking, feel mumbled and incoherent when paired with what I can only describe as one of the most painful vocal performances in modern music history. Rather than drawing me into a vivid world of storytelling, the album leaves me bewildered and annoyed. The production itself isn’t much better. While some might appreciate the raw, unfiltered sound as a hallmark of Dylan’s early work, for me it just accentuates every flaw. The mix does nothing to salvage the overall feel; instead, it amplifies the awkward, monotone delivery that runs rampant throughout the record. There’s a sense of disarray here that makes the entire album feel messy and unpolished. Even if I were to try and find a redeeming quality, I simply can’t. The supposed genius of Dylan’s songwriting is completely overshadowed by his infuriating vocal style on this album. Every track is a reminder of what I consider to be one of the worst vocal experiences in my life, making it impossible for me to appreciate any aspect of Highway 61 Revisited. In summary, despite its historical significance and the accolades it’s received from others, this album is a complete miss for me. It’s a relentless barrage of uninspired vocals and chaotic production that I just can’t stomach. Zero out of five stars—and that’s being generous.

Sorry to this man and to my music teacher from university who loved him. Edit: I’m back. I think I liked desolution row the best but maybe that’s just because it was the last one and I knew it would be over. I wonder how many times he said the word ‘said’ on this album.

Not listening to this shit

There wasn't really any aspect of this album that I liked. The vocals absolutely sucked it was hard see past them. I eventually did, and I thought both the acoustic and electric guitarwork was below average. There were no real changes of pace in the songs and it all became a drag. The harmonica solos sucked too. Usually I love these random instruments in songs but it was just blasted as loud as possible down the mic. It was a tough one to get through

Rolling Stone aside, I found it a tough listen.

I’m not a country fan, but I’m not a fan of his voice nor am I a fan of the harmonica. I like the names of each song, my favourite song from the album was “from a Buick 6” as it was pretty fast pace song. Overall 1/10 not for me

third album of Bob Dylan that i’ve listened to on this list and i’ve only liked a handful of songs combined. really wish I could see the hype around him but it’s just not good to me. couldn’t grasp this album either. kdot just dropped a response (finally) so maybe that took some life away but damn (pun intended).

11 minutes is too long for a song with the exact same melodic and rhythmic structure throughout.

Knowing that I absolutely hate Bob Dylan, I thought I'd actually give this a crack. And you know what, "Like a rolling stone" is his least utterly shit. His voice is atrocious. And it's over 6 minutes, which is approximately 5½ minutes too long, because enough is established within the first 30 seconds to tell you everything you need yo know. We then go into Tombstone Blue. Which is bad blues and a voice that doesn't suit blues generally. "It takes a lot to laugh. It takes a train to cry" establishes that Dylan has attempted to catch the 17:30 east coast main line service from King's Cross on a Friday afternoon. You know what, I tried. And Bob Dylan is every tiny bit as shite for this as literally every other record.

Whining vocals, I am sure there is meaning in the lyrics but it really is just boring. Obviously this will offend many, I just don’t need it in my life, boring.

Classic rock....a little too "folksy" for me.

At track 4 I completely gave up on and pulled a DNF. If you need proof the editors needed better representation to bring a more diverse showcase of albums and less bland nonsense, this is it.

Bob Yesilgöz staat met 7 albums in de lijst. Dit is de tweede die ik krijg. Ik zet het aan en na 30 seconden weet ik al precies wat de komende 50 minuten ga moeten verdragen. Zijn manier van zingen zit midden in m'n irritatiezone. Ome Bob had gewoon lekker voor anderen moeten schrijven. Ome Bob is als zanger enorm vermoeiend. De opname is wat schel, de mondharmonica is nog scheller. Na een tijdje is er ook nog zo'n clown-die-onderuit-gaat geluidseffect. Vrijwel elk nummer heeft eigenlijk maar genoeg materiaal om 2 minuten interessant te zijn, maar ze duren allemaal 2 tot 6 keer zo lang. Ik merk aan alles dat ik niet kan wachten tot dit album voorbij is. Ik zet het op pauze om even koffie te gaan halen en wanneer ik terugkom merk ik actieve tegenzin om weer op play te klikken. Ik heb liever geen muziek aan dan dit en dat zorgt ervoor dat ik geen beleefdheids-sterren ga uitdelen vandaag. Z'n stem schuurt zo enorm dat de bijl waarmee ik hak bot is geworden. Het eerste album dat ik kreeg gaf ik 2 sterren omdat ik m'n oude CKV leraren niet teleur wilde stellen, maar ik ga die beleefdheid geen zeven keer volhouden. Ik vind dit album eigenlijk iets beter dan die eerste, maar ik heb toen te hoog ingezet. Een subjectieve 1 op pure emotie. Sorry meneer Korsmit.

Although "Highway 61 Revisited" is the highest acclaimed albums in Dylan's collection, this album did not age well. Any person can only listen to so much nasally whining and incomprehensible babble.

It's people like Bob Dylan who lead me to believe that people with very little talent can succeed in life. Not a fan.

I hear good things about Bob Dylan and I am confused because I couldn’t even finish this album.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Whoever “found” Bob Dylan needs to rethink their choices in life.

I hope I don't do this often because I don't feel good about it, but I couldn't bring myself to finish this album. Not even just a sample of each song. I've heard that Dylan is a love-it or hate-it situation, and I've learned that I'm soundly in the latter camp. This album has the personality of that one guy you went to high school with who could undeniably shred on guitar, but had the personality and conversation skills of a potato.

Same thing with all the other Bob Dylan projects on here; while I appreciate the artistry and influence, I just do not care for any of these songs and have no interest in listening to any of them again.

I was not looking forward to this; It was thankfully a short album. I’ve tried in the past and just can’t get along with Dylan, it’s always puzzled me why my mother owns a Bob Dylan album! This album didn’t elicit a single emotional reaction from me other than irritation at the nonsense lyrics, cacophonous music, and off-key warbling. If I had to pick a ‘favourite’ track it’s ironically the final track 'Desolation Row’ 1/5

Didn't rate it. Almost 60 years later than it was written but very repetitive songs and I don't know what any of his parables are about. It's like 'the blind speckled frog said to the tangerine queen, how does it feel? <Harmonica solo>'

Definitely not my taste. I'm not really able to focus on lyrics while working so my review is really only dependent on sound, and the instrumentation and singing was not enjoyable for me for passive listening.

[Nee, lass mal. Hör' ich später.] Abscheulich lange Platte mit dem üblichen Dylan-Gequäke. Erzählt viel, sagt gar nix. Dylan hat Kryptik ohne viel Hintersinn zu seiner Masche auserkoren und seit knapp 60 Jahren geht ihm die verblödete Musikwelt auf den Leim. Erbärmlich, würdelos, aber sehr erfolgreich. Like A Rolling Stone ist im übrigen das berühmte Korn des blinden Huhnes auf dieser Platte. Wenigstens spielt er nicht ganz so viel Mundharmonika.

Skipped Rolling Stone; I've heard it too many god damn times and I don't think it's a great song. Tombstone Blues surprised me initially, I liked it more than I thought I would, but then it just kept going on for almost 6 minutes with little change. The rest of the album was a chore; the harmonica in Queen Jane gave me a headache, even after I turned it down, and that fucking spin-whistle in HWY 61, what in the pretentious-folk-hero-hippy-square-scaring-mid-60's-edge-lord kind of fucking bullshit is that?!? Well, the album is almost over at least, this last song is only...11 minutes longWHATTHEFUCKBOB!!!!

Can't think of a single Dylan song I like and didn't find one on this album. Not only is his voice annoying as all hell, way too much harmonica in his songs. The only artist who has effectively used the harmonica in their music, off the top of me head, is Ray Wiley Hubbard. Think I put on some Hubbard to wash whatever this was out of my head. I wonder if the drugs were better back in the day that made be people this was good music. Sorry Dylan fans

Pretty standard album, nothing stood out to me. Never really listened to Bob Dylan before.

Usually with music, the instruments speak to me first before lyrics. That said, I could NOT enjoy this album. My key takeaway from this is that I'm really upset whenever people say they don't like Bob Dylan and Tom Petty, because TP is in a CLASS OF HIS OWN. And Dylan can't sing. Half the time he switches to spoken word and it feels like a cop-out. I felt that the harmonica and special effects were forced and did not add to the songs. I can't even get behind giving it 2 stars because of Like a Rolling Stone.

i heard like a rolling stone so many times that I don't have any opinions on it anymore i couldn't end this i got to track 2 and became completely bored i don't like this this list was made by a lot of straight white man i just know it

This is my first time listening to Bob Dylan, so bear with me for a moment. This album's main feature is its storytelling, which is some of the best I've ever heard. Particularly in Desolation Road and Ballad of a Thin Man, the latter is my favorite song from the album. A major part of the storytelling in this album, for me, was the tone it established. While it sometimes varies from song to song, each track in the album for me is tied together by a, for lack of a better word, "highway" tone. Personally, I believe the instrumentals are more so there to help convey the tone of the storytelling than to sound good, but conveying tone and quality musicianship go hand and hand, so they still sound good. Every instrument for me (slide whistle included) reinforced the "highway" tone, like something you'd hear an old jailbird singing in their jailcell. There are instances (most notably the acoustic guitar in Desolation Road) where the instrumentals are really interesting and high quality, but never does the musicianship beat the lyricism and storytelling, which I believe is Bob Dylan's strong-suit if I'm not mistaken. My only grip is that some of songs feel like they go on for one or two verses longer than they should, but for what reason in particular I can't really grasp for myself.

Love this album, some duds, but overall great
