Couldn't finish this Bob Dylan album either. At least Like a Rolling Stone is an ok song. Inclined to rate one star, but, although it is apparently a commonly accepted fact that Bob Dylan can't sing for shit, I can see what some people like about his music.
Great songs but I can’t stand his voice.
Better musically, but I still hate Dylan's voice. Every one of his albums is hard to get through because of this.
Don't understand why he is meant to be such a big deal. His vocals are bad and the songs are fine
I'm not a huge fan of Bob Dylan. And here's another singer who looks like an actor. This one Adam Sandler. First song is good Like a Rolling Stone. meh 2 stars
Great music and interesting vibes, but I’m never a fan of lyricists
2/10
3rd bob dylan album I got and it's just as uninteresting as the other ones
Big meh. Like a couple of his songs but can't stand the album as a whole.
Ugh more bloody Dylan - and even this, as important as people seem to think it is, isn't universally popular - mainly because this bloke just cannot sing
I feel like with each Bob Dylan album that pops up I get slightly more immune to his awful voice, but I still dislike it enough to not give this more than 2 stars
Prolonged exposure to Dylan's singing is damaging to my ears. Small doses are recommended. Stand-out: Like a Rolling Stone
doesnt do it for me
The title track started with a slide whistle. There was a harmonica involved throughout the album. Truly, no artist (and their surrounding acclaim) makes me feel as crazy as Bob Dylan. I don’t understand the appeal, I’ve seen parodies of the man that are more enjoyable than I find his actual music.
When I saw the album started with “Like a Rolling Stone”, I thought I would love the rest of the album. Unfortunately, the songs after that weren’t that interesting. “Desolation Row” might be my second favourite on the album. 2.5 stars
If you like bob Dylan you'll like this. But if you don't it's just him droning on for an hour. All sounds the same. Was fine to start but waiting for it to end
The great thing about Bob Dylan is that he tells a story through his music. My problem with this album is that each song sounded the same. Nothing really stuck out to me. My only comment is, "Yep, sounds like Bob Dylan." There wasn't anything special. Best case, I would put this album on in the background while I have a couple beers. Favorite track was Desolation Row. Did not add to my Spotify library.
Bob Dylan somehow got famous by being both ugly and having a bad voice. This album showcases this feat in all its glory Would not recommend to a friend
I don't like Bob Dylan. It was really hard to get through this entire album. Especially while working out, not only was my body under strain, but my mental and ears were under agony
naporan mi je bob
I’m sorry. I don’t feel it, except for: Like a rolling stone …
Idk I never got really into Dylan. This album did not necessarily change my mind.
1. like a rolling ztone - 1.5 2. tombztone bluez - 1.5 3. a train to cry - 1 4. from a buick - 1 5. Thin man - 1.5 6. Queen. Jane - 1 7. Highway 61 - 1 8. Thumbs blues - 1.5 9. Desolation. - 1.5
Somewhat low and slow. Likely would sound better to someone who has listened to less modern music.
The electrician walks into his kitchen looking at an ostrich baby wishin he could take his unicycle fishin; but mother Mary is carrying her baby with a cigarette that says debt its ashes falling into the pool that was built by the school with a sign that says "only for the politician" See, I can do it too. You can just stop after the first song with this one.
it was okay, not really my style but quite catchy but also repetitive
Giving it 2 stars for writing. I can't get into anything else about the album myself.
Never understood all the hype about Dylan, and I have friends who think he walks on water. Maybe it was the right music for the time, but it wasn't right for me. Honestly, 3 songs in I'm so bored and his voice is as annoying as I remember. The whole thing feels amateurish, and I know it isn't.
Interesting lyrics at times, but Dylan's vocals are nasal, whiny, and scratchy. My favorite is "Like a Rolling Stone" though, and this album is an all-around groundbreaking piece of music. However, I just don't like how his voice sounds. Instrumentals are really good.
A Lot of Yap but classic Bob Dylan.
Not the bob Dylan era I like most but Pretty good, high 2.
Before listening to this, Bob Dylan was an artist I had just never got around to listening to before, so this was my first time listening to an album of his. And maybe I'm missing something, but I must say I'm not a fan. I am obviously aware of how famous and influential Bob Dylan is, so I really wanted to like this, but I just don't. I have always known that he was notorious for being a bad singer, and people say he makes up for it by having really good instrumentals and great politically charged lyrics. But not only did I not find myself being entertained by the music itself, but while listening to the lyrics I didn't manage to find any captivating political themes. Do I just need to listen to the lyrics more carefully and do a better job at decoding them or something? The only song I feel I truly enjoyed on this album was Ballad of a Thin Man, that had some interesting things happening on it. And I suppose Desolation Row had a few cool things to offer too, but I definitely don'y think it needs to be 11 minutes long. Not to mention the use of harmonicas in that song, and also Queen Jane Approximately are so ear grating and annoying. I'm going to keep this album in consistent rotation over the next few weeks because like I said, I do really want to like this, so I'm hoping that it can grow on me, and I might check out more of Bob Dylan's stuff too in the hopes that it's only this album that I don't like. But going purely off first impressions, I really did not like this.
Started my bob dylan journey strongly disliking him. I now moderately dislike him.
Better than I'd expected. The songs are better than on some of Dylan's other work. Still the same hollaring, nasal, tuneless warble though - but listenable and even enjoyable in places. (I think he should've been a poet, not a musician.)
Sorry okay!
A line from QUEEN JANE APPROXIMATELY sums this up nicely; “And you’re sick of all this repetition”. Too many verses, too many stream of consciousness words, too many boring harmonica fills, too many indecipherable pitches and melodies. More like too many inexplicable accolades. Out of tune guitars, out of tune singing - and this is an all-time “great” album? Not in my estimation.
2. Seriously, another Bob Dylan on thid list?! So over his music.
Still not sure Dylan is my thing, but I can see his relevance in music culture.
Honestly liked it more than I thought I would
A few OK songs but otherwise endless suffering.
I don't hate Dylan's voice like a lot of people do, but this one still doesn't do it for me outside of "Like a Rolling Stone".
Getting a Bob Dylan album in this list is like being told you have to sit next to your aunt’s tiresome second husband at thanksgiving. You go into it hoping it won’t be like last year and everyone says he’s a good guy, but he monopolizes the conversation and you’re bored to tears while all the good times are happening elsewhere. Outside of “Like a Rolling Stone” it’s more typical, self-indulgent Dylan with unnecessary harmonica solos.
A lot of droning on and on. Bob Dylan’s voice gets on my nerves. Nothing terrible about this album, but I don’t see why it’s so great. Had a rough time getting through it as it was starting to grate on my nerves.
ganz gut für bob dylan
Not my kind of blues
Close to 100 days before I finish the project and I’m still getting Dylan albums. The tragedy of this one is I think it would be great if the songs were half the length - there’s some great guitar, and Bob’s voice is tolerable enough to where the basic melodies and compositional ideas work pretty well. It’s when each track goes on for six to seven minutes at a time, a seemingly never-ending purgatory of nasal whine, that my patience was tested. Do that for every track to the tune of an hour and now you’ve just made me mad (but that’s still a better emotion than bored).
Oy. Yes, Dylan is important to music history and songwriting. But, Jesus, I do not like listening to his voice. Overall, this skews more honky tonk than I can handle. This album is not for me, at all. Stopped early.
I dont even know what to say. The sun is not yellow it is chicken. That is all. I can’t even comprehend how to rate this
After two albums, I can list the ingredients needed for your typical Bobby song: 1. Play a loopy acoustic guitar melody. Keep playing the melody the entire time. 2. Bob proceeds to word-vomit about the latest adventures of his imaginary friends during a drug-induced psychosis. 3. Harmonica outro.
Meh
I just can stand his voice. Music is OK if not my thing. With a different vocalist I wouldn't mind being a guest and having someone put this on.
Didn't enjoy at all. Thought I might enjoy it at least musically as I know I can't hack Dylan's vocals but the screechy harmonica solo's pute off
Gave it a shot, but not really my thing.
Jaaaa. Like a Rolling Stone is natuurlijk heerlijk. Bij From a Buick 6 had ik wel even genoeg mondharmonica gehad. Ballad of a Thin Man is heerlijk slepend, van genoten.
So, I added a couple songs, but could only really listen to this one twice. The songs meander too much and just sound like Bob just saying random stuff and trying to make it sound musical.
Um, pretty Dylanesque. Sounded very samey.
Gotta tell you… every Bob Dylan song sounds good until he begins to sing.
Dylan is a great songwriter but not a great singer
Today I learned I don't care for Bob Dylan. Don't get me wrong, the man can really wail on that harmonica, but something about that voice of his is a bit grating. At least a little too much to listen to an entire album straight. Maybe if I peppered some songs into other playlists.
Not for me
After reading the bio for this album I was excited but after listening I'm not too sure why this is considered one of the best albums of all time. It was a good album but something about the sound wasn't doing it for me. Bob Dylan has an interesting singing style but the lyrics don't come together the best. I do appreciate the important of the lyrics here, its definitely trying to say something that could be uncovered after several listens. It's interesting how this might have sounded amazing to older generations but for me the appeal isn't really there. Maybe the story that its trying to tell doesn't relate as strongly to me as more modern albums do. Musical trends do vary with time and realizing this was made in 1965 tells me that this was made for a different time and generation, a time capsule if you will.
Yeah, can't remember what I wanted to say about this sorry. But I didn't hate it.
He is undoubtedly clever, well-read, and thoughtful. But to my ears he is a musical fraud. His harmonic structures are banal; 12-bar blues or Pete Seeger I-IV-V structures ad nauseam. At most only slight variations within a song between verse - chorus. No bridges to be found. Over the course of 15 verses every song becomes torturous. He occasionally developed the bones of a great melody, only to abandon it to his trademark pitch bends at the end of every phrase. It's as if he never had interest in developing the discipline required to complete and perfect a melody. To my ear he sounds almost disdainful of musicality. For example, the out of tune guitar on Queen Jane - there are so many ways to introduce dissonance (maj/min, dim, half dim chords, min 7, tri-tone, b9, etc.) And Willie Nelson demonstrated that you can bring them into folk-style music. But understanding of the use of those requires dedication, discipline and care. Far simpler just to detune a fifth of the band and call it art. Lyrically, while he is unquestionably gifted, I find he is more committed to demonstrating his mental prowess and breadth of education than in communicating ideas and emotions. And again, the length of the songs. He doesn't use that length to create narrative. He uses it to build layer upon layer of depth to a core idea. It's like a 15 layer butter cream cake. Two/three layers is plenty in the hands of a disciplined and more considerate master.
I don’t think I’ll ever love a Bob Dylan album but this was fine. Rolling Stone is a great song. The rest is fine
Only listened to 2 songs but I feel I got he whole package... Harmonica and organ are awesome but highly repetitive 6 minute songs aren't
I get it, Robert D is kind of a big deal. I just can't stand his sound.
Not my cup of tea. His voice is so grating and drone like.
I really hate the Bob Dylan inflection and Cadence and it makes this a tough album to get through.
Meh.
Yeah, it's fine
not my cup of tea
Like a Rolling Stone - Pretty strong Bob Dylan vibes right at the get go. - Lots of Own/Home/Known/Stone rhyming here. - Pretty meh for my tastes 2/5 Tombstone Blues - I like the beat to this one more, much more upbeat and my speed. - Lyrics are still weird with simple rhymes. Better than Track 1. - Again meh for my taste 3/5 It Takes a lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry - Much more Blues vibes. - Just didn't feel like listening to the whole thing. - 2/5 From a Buick 6 - My lord the harmonica - 0/5 Ballad of a Thin Man - Painfully slow. Not entirely sure how this man made music. - At least a decent beat to it. - 2/5 Queen Jane Approximately - Ahh more Harmonica!? - What are these lyrics? Invatations? Bandits that you turn your cheek to? - 1/5 Highway 61 Revisited - What in the unholy hell is that slide whistle? - Again what are these lyrics? - At least more upbeat. 2/5 Just Like Tom Thumbs Blues - Started off with good beat and vibes. Hoping for a good one. - Killed it with more Harmonica - 1/5 Desolation Row - At least some nice guitar in the background. - What is it with your weird lyrics Bob? - 11 minutes and harmonica... Why Bob, why? - 1/5
Thanks to the opener, "Like a Rolling Stone" I decided to listen, as I am not a fan of Dylan - his voice mostly... I saw him in the 80's and he was awful! He played each song back to back without any sense of care for the crowd. I have a negative respect for him since. We'll see how far I get with this listen... I couldn't listen to it. Did about 10 seconds per track. Done.
Dylan's voice is so, so bad it makes me wanna do unspeakable things. If you wanna listen to these, mostly decent to good songs, look up some covers of them. Only way to enjoy Dylan is to listen to versions of Dylan songs that he ain't on.
I want to like Bob Dylan but I don't
Bobby Dee! Let's see what the original mumble rapper has to offer this time! This is fine, I'm not a big fan but I do own this so I must have enjoyed it at some point
Still not feeling Bob Dylan. Prefer his lyrics as the spoken word
This isn't terrible, but it isn't very good. It doesn't live up to its 3.81 average rating so far at all. The lyrics are good. It would have been better as a collection of poetry. But it's music, so the music matters. The songs are way too long. Not enough going on to keep my attention. He's not a very good singer. Guitars are out of tune half of the time. But it's listenable. I can imagine it was quite something when it was new though. Favorite song: Ballad of a thin man.
I found this to be not good. That is all. Sorry liad bud
This album has Rolling Stone and that's it. Kind of a stinker. Rolling Stone is absolutely iconic though, and still slaps to this day.
Less jarring than the first Bob Dylan album, but still... bluh.
Not one of his best…
Not a fan of Dylan. Like a Rolling Stone is good though.
I love folk but damn do I just not like Dylan. The pre-Royal Albert Hall (1966 tour in general) era of Dylan is a lot more tolerable than his later work. Though better his voice is still whiny on this album and just wrecks what are admittedly really good songs at their core. And for the love of GOD if Dylan just never found the harmonica I might actually like some of his music. I like this album more than most of Dylan and "Like a Rolling Stone" is an all time classic of course. And like most Dylan, it has fantastic lyricism and instrumentation, but I just would like all of these songs better covered by somebody else. I am overly harsh to Dylan and I think it would get a 3 or 4 depending on a different artist, but he gets a 2 today.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah vocally it’s superb but I thought the harmonica was a bit overkill Favourite song: Track 1 - Like A Rolling Stone
I’ve never understood what the world sees in Bob Dylan. His voice sounds haunted and soulless, and not in a good way, and his drummer can’t even keep up.
Another Bob Dylan album. See my previous description
Meh. I realize Dylan's an iconic lyricist and performer, but I just feel like so often he's talking about something deeply esoteric or maybe even entirely harebrained. You can't just write slant lyrics about eleven different things and always come out with an American classic, and I feel like the album is just full of misses. Maybe just not my cup of tea.
I genuinely try to understand what it is about Bob Dylan that gets everyone so excited. I mean, he's a hero to so many great songwriters over generations. So I went into this thinking, "If there's one tune I know by Dylan, it's 'Like A Rolling Stone,' and it's a great song, so maybe this is the album that's going to turn me around." Alas, I struggled to stay invested in "Like A Rolling Stone." By the time the fourth verse came around and there was no change to the intensity to the vocal and no deviation from the musical structure, I was starting to feel physically uncomfortable. The same thing happened in "Tombstone Blues." I was forcing myself not to fast forward to the next track. Dylan's vocal stylings are definitely part of the issue: I just do not enjoy listening to him sing. In fact, it's a more profound reaction. It agitates me. (There are other vocalists who do the same: Eddie Vedder, Van Morrison, Adele.) I also can't abide his harmonica playing. So let's face it, I'm not a fan. It is a dagger in the heart of my beloved, but we'll just have to live with the reality that Bob Dylan and Madonna will never be my cup of tea. OMG, the harmonica solo between verses 2 & 3 in "From A Buick 6" made my testicles pucker. "Queen Jane" has got one too. The slower tracks ("It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry" and "Ballad of a Thin Man") were more palatable to me, for what it's worth even though the title of the first contributes to my belief that Dylan has been playing everyone from the start. It takes... what? Honestly, respect for my wife and the songwriters who obviously hear this differently than I is what makes this a 2. I simply don't get it.
2/6 harmonicas soloed
Meh, I don’t really get the hype
Sorry, deffo deserves to be here, but I just find listening to a full Dylan album a pretty tiresome experience
ñe
i cannot deal with his high pitched harmonica. i fully believe that that is the sole reason i find bob dylan absolutely atrocious to listen to because when the screeching instrument isn’t on he actually doesn’t sound so bad. i wish i could hear without the harmonica because i could definitely get a better listen.
Culturally this is important - most definitely. Even as someone who doesn't pay much attention to lyrics and focuses almost entirely on the music, this is an important touchstone in music if not American history. But...the music. I could just copy/paste all of my studio Dylan reviews - essentially: I appreciate and even enjoy his poetry, I don't really like the music/songs enough to listen to him voluntarily. Boring writeup but that's all I've got. no wait: why did nobody do anything about the horrific out of tune harmonica especially on "Queen Jane....?" jesush... 5/10 2 stars.
It's alright, Nothing really caught my attention though.
i'm torn about bob dylan. i don't think there's any arguing on how influential he and this album (among others) were, but there is controversy surrounding his music. it makes me uneasy that he's stolen so many musical aspects from bipoc. he does, at least, cover important topics within his songs. but to take the album as it is: i'm not the biggest fan of blues or folk, but with the rock element, this album is enjoyable for me. dylan's other work is tough for me to listen to, but his willingness to incorporate other instruments on this album helps me. but, of course, dylan still uses his signature harmonica and his story-telling lyrics. that being said, this was a worthwhile listen, mostly for my musical history education, but that's kinda it.
Somewhere in the wordy prattling that is typical of blues lyrics, Dylan had moments of genius where he wrote some truly poetic lyrical phrases that have long stood the test of time. It's nice to hear some lyrics from this time period that give permission to be poetic while still rocking and rolling. It is sometimes to his detriment though; I sometimes find him to be rambling on lyrically at the expense of the music. Still, I find it difficult, personally, to be into Bob Dylan; his nasal-y drawl that he tends to sing with has always grated on me. This very quality is one that has drawn others to follow his 60+ year career. It's all personal preference. That said, I have no reservations about Bob Dylan's deserving place in this project, but I'm still just not that into him.
Like a rolling stone is about as solid as you can kick off an album. The album is folksy, with a great bit of country twang to it. Queen Jane Approximately sounds a bit like the title track, which I guess is to be expected, unlike Highway 61 Revisited, which seems to point everything in a different direction. There's something interesting about the guitar riff that's just... a different direction. Can't put my fingers on it.
didn’t really enjoy, not my style tbh
I swear I've already had this album. Maybe I changed universes overnight. Bit of a shame this new universe is one where Bob Dylan still exists. 2/5.
Clever lyrics I'm sure, but not a fan... that's not singing.
DyLan still doesn’t do it for me ! 2*
The songs start off fine with pleasant instrumentals but then his Gawdawful voice comes in and it’s like nails against the blackboard for me. He may be a good poet but his singing and phrasing are not my cup of tea. Like a rolling stone and Ballad of a thin man are slightly more bearable.
like a rolling stone
Harmonica hurts my ears
I’ve scored previous Bob Dylan albums very poorly. Nothings going to change here. Why, when an artist sounds exactly the same from one LP to another, does their need to be multiple albums from them on this list. If you’ve listened to one Dylan album you don’t need further examples cause spoiler alert...he sounds exactly the same. In summary, it goes without saying this album was as boring as the rest... 2 Stars!
Just kinda dull.
First off, let me stipulate that Bob Dylan is one of a handful of great lyricists of the rock era, and certainly the most political, and some of Dylan's most trenchant lyrics can be found on Highway 61 Revisited. Now, not everyone felt that way. Syd Barrett wrote a hilarious take down of Dylan called The Bob Dylan Blues: Got the Bob Dylan blues And the Bob Dylan shoes And my clothes and my hair's in a mess But you know I just couldn't care less Goin' to write me a song 'Bout what's right and what's wrong 'Bout god and my god and all that Quiet while I make like a cat 'Cause I'm a poet, don't ya know it And the wind, you can blow it Cause I'm Mr. Dylan, the king And I'm free as a bird on the wing Roam from town to town Guess I get people down But I don't care too much about that 'Cause my gut and my wallet are fat Make a whole lotta dough But I deserve it though I've got soul and a good heart of gold So I'll sing about war in the cold 'Cause I'm a poet, don't ya know it And the wind, you can blow it Cause I'm Mr. Dylan, the king And I'm free as a bird on the wing Now, aside from his lyrics, Dylan isn't a bad songwriter. No, I take that back. His compositions are often sturdy and occasionally inspired, if still fairly basic. And the covers of his work, by artists as varied as Hendrix and Keith Jarrett, prove that point. But as a performing artist, Dylan's charms are way overstated. His sneering talk singing may put across his lyrics, but musically, it kind of sucks. Ditto his guitar playing, ditto his harp playing. There's only so much Michael Bloomfield on guitar and Al Kooper on organ can do to save Highway 61 Revisited, and this is far from their strongest work, anyway. There's a little more energy on Highway 61 Revisited than on Dylan's previous albums, which makes the music more bearable, but to call this "hard bluesy rock" is ludicrous. Once again, an artist's reputation distorts the critical evaluation of their work. I'll give this a 2.5 out of 5 and only because of Dylan's abilities as a songwriter.
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Like a Rolling Stone, Tombstone Blues Cutting Edge: Desolation Row Overall Notes: The songwriting is really good, but holy hell batman I can't take the harmonica. I normally have no strong feelings about the instrument, but for whatever reason it sounds horrible and it single handedly ruins songs on this album (Queen Jane Approximately is the chief example of it). I don't know if it's the mix or my speakers or what it was about it but the screeching in my ear was unbearable. I can't believe that the cool kids once listened to harmonicas and a rambling man.
I wish I liked him better. He's quite the poet, and some of the songs are kind of blues-y and have decent rhythms, but his voice just fucking annoys me, and his phrasing too. This is a 2/5 or maybe 1/5 for me. Let's say 2, cause his older stuff is worse.
Plod plod plod
I was never a fan of Dylan
2.75
Tykkään ukon soundista, mutta levynä ei innostanut. Yksi leka...
It was ok. Bob Dylan is a good lyricist but I don't care much for his voice to be honest.
Not really my taste, would only play it(and bob dylan as an artist) as background music to a ride or at the beach
Meh
Look, Like A Rolling Stone is great. But then immediately after that we have Tombstone Blues and we are back into Dylan's impenetrable imagery for the rest of the album: "The ghost of Belle Starr, she hands down her wits / To Jezebel, the nun, she violently knits / A bald wig for Jack the Ripper who sits / At the head of the chamber of commerce". And it's all like this, verse after verse, song after song. It's just intolerable, a word that also describes the harmonica shrieking directly into my ears during Queen Jane Approximately. This is the fourth Bob Dylan album I have heard and I had frankly heard enough before this. I get that he's influential, I get that people love him, but also I strongly, strongly believe that if you've heard one classic Dylan album, you've heard them all. My star rating reflects my enjoyment. I did not enjoy this at all.
Bro’s voice kinda annoying asf
Total rubbish.
I tried. Really, I did. But by track four I just couldn't continue. Not for me in a million years.
This album didn’t really move me in any way. There were a couple of standouts (“It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry” and “Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues”) but not much to add.
These songs are too old to match my taste.
sounds like a moped starting. I hate Bob Dylan
Whoever voted this above 2 stars must be off their guts. No seriously, let me know what you guys are on so I can ask my doctor to prescribe me some. It's migraine inducing and I found his voice quite annoying.
I can understand why this album was popular it seems more like a decade forward than it was released.
Starting this project has made me realise how much I hate Bob Dylan! The sound of his voice and the length of his albums are unbearable!
I could not wait for it to be over. It's the same song over and over and the most frustrating harmonica I have ever had to listen to. Sounds like the velvet underground if they sucked.
Solipsistically lopsided lollipop lyrics
I once heard someone say that Bob Dylan is an excellent songwriter who should have stuck to that instead of singing his own music. I subscribe to that line of thinking. It was fun to hear some of the more bluesy music, but I still end up thinking that most bob dylan songs sound the same and are skips. Like a rolling stone slaps but I didn’t realize how long it goes on. I recognize the influence of the album and of bob dylan as a whole, but I won’t be revisiting this album besides “rolling stone”. 1/5
Texan cowboy in the highway music.
i don't think bob dylan is for me... something ab the way he just sings his own melody (if it even counts as one) with no clear vocal line makes me uncomfy and that's just my personal preference because i gravitate to more vocal heavy songs... sorry
Lo odio.
Fuck off already.
can't stand dylan
I think Bob Dylan's voice might actually be one of the most unpleasant sounds that it's possible for a human being to make. I am honestly baffled how anyone can enjoy listening to this guy sing. The backing music is repetitive and unimaginative, but it does at least occasionally throw in a random guitar (or other instrument) flourish to break things up a bit. The trademark Bob Dylan harmonica is ever present and as shit as it always was. Why does the title track have a random siren whistle thrown in? God I hate this crap so much.
3/7 bob dylan albums down we're so back! welcome to "1 Bob Dylan album a month" (for context I've had 3 bob dylan albums in 100 days please help me.) what's special about this one? - he still can't sing. his voice is making me look at the ibuprofen longingly - he's still blasting the harmonica without any consideration of my poor ears... god this ibuprofen is tempting - groundbreaking lyrics where no one seems to be sure what he's on about and there's conflicting interpretations and trying to make sense of it is giving me a headache. ibuprofen time! and we're only one song in! one thing I will give credit is the band is more interesting then his other album on the rare occasion when he shuts up and isn't making me wince with the harmonica. very rare occurrence normally I'm excited to see a >10 minute song at the end of the album but that's currently looking like the moon from majora's mask. this has to be a joke right 1 thank god it's over
truly, that's enough Dylan... please... no more... I can't with his voice.
I respect the storytelling and way with words. Desolation Row is the apex in that sense, I think. With that said, I barely made it through the album. It not only failed to function as music to me - to entertain me AND/OR make me feel something - but it actively aggravated me in fact. It was that annoying.
It took me days to get through this album. I know Bob Dylan is a legend but I’m not a fan.
i just don’t like bob dylan i guess
Møkkamann
God he's boring
I simply cannot stand Bob Dylan's voice. It's like he picks a note for each song and insists on making every single word he sings be that note. Every line sounds like he's struggling to get it out, like if he doesn't put a little more "umph" into it at the end he wouldn't be able to finish the sentence. The frustrating thing is I liked some of the instrumentation on this one. In Tombstone Blues there was a moment where the guitar came in with a solo and my head started bobbing, but then Bob comes in with that "euuuuurrrrah" screechy thing he does to let the world know he's about to sing another line and my nose automatically wrinkled like I'd smelled something offensive.
Don't understand the hype around Bob Dylan... This album tastes like saltwater crackers. I don't mind the genre, but the actual melody, lyrics and vocals are so damn bland.
An album that lacks many points of interest
Dylan is niet mijn ding
My heart sunk when I saw another one of Bob Dylan's NINE albums on this list. Do we really need nine of his albums here? Especially when they all sound the same? No. However, I try to be a positive person, so I gave “Highway 61 Revisited” a go. Oh dear. As always, Bob Dylan’s voice is not good. The music is passable, but not as good as we are told. The end product is grating and invasive. It actively bugged me. I could even accept boring, background music but this crosses into irksome. I said it before, but I agree with that well respected Irish journalist who said that Bob Dylan was just “a busker who got lucky”. He’s absolutely right. BD is not a good singer, he’s not a good musician and he’s not a genius wordsmith. He’s not even mediocre. His songs are so simple. I urge everyone out there: stand up for yourself. If you think Bob Dylan’s music is rubbish, be proud of your opinion and admit it. Don’t let the hipsters pressure you into lying about your feelings. They are wrong, you are right.
Bob’s just not my thing. Or at least, this album doesn’t represent the qualities I like about Bob Dylan.
Not for me too samey and drony
Opening track is great... Shame there's more.
Not my style :)
Ugg... Robert 'fucking boring' Zimmerman. Boring as fuck.
No.
I'm tired of this overrated Bob Dylan. I'll spare myself the trouble of listening to this album and temporarily lifting the block on my streaming service. 1/5
Only liked two songs— neither of them to the fullest
Is this the one that started it all off? In which case HOW!? It was painful to listen to. I is shite.
I like 'Like a Rolliing Stone'. The album peaked too early. The rest is just mumbly old trampy one man band shit. That joke whistle thing was the last straw. Even though it put my teeth on edge I made it to the end. I need a medal.
Yes. He’s an icon. An icon with a horrible voice IMO
Bob Dylan isn’t for me! All the songs sound the same, his voice irritates me and too much harmonica. Can see the appeal but not for me sorry!
only 3 songs in, no likey
Goddamn it I can't get used to his screech.
Storytelling. 1/5
Jesus Christ. Did anyone listen to this shit before publishing it? 1/5
He can't sing for shit
I'm giving this a chance only because it's the beginning of his electronic phase. I'm expecting it to be just mildly less irritating than the acoustic stuff. While not totally pushing me over to "flip table over" mode, this was still a very grating listen for me. While this album came out and made into mainstream, bands like Blue Cheer, The Sonics and The Premiers we're making their moves and turning pages by the handlful. While mainstream folk/cuntry people might feel this is groundbraking musical evolution, I'm saying this is just copying ideas already happening fast in the underground. Anyway. It's still him telling stories, now it's just over a bit more fuller set of musical performances and I don't really care for it.
I listened to far too much of this album, as I sighed to myself, returning to my work computer after my far too short break, working at the job that I need to have to pay for my house, so that my family is supported, and maybe they don't have to experience the crushing of the...9 to 5....twing twang twing guitar solo God, how irritating. I understand activism is important, but at least make the music sound good. Made it 80% of the way through.
I just don't get it.
I mean its fine for the genre it is, the 1st track and the 5th are definetly the strong suits, I like the ragtime piano and harmonica but everything else kinda feels like filler. the last track being 11 minutes long is just absurd. idk id say like a 4.5? its respected in its genre but i dont exactly like this genre, i wouldnt go back to it ever.
I understand his influence on generations of artists, but his voice is the worst and I'm not even impressed with his most of his song writing skills, I just find him so EXTREMELY Overrated!... But at least this was a tolerable time period in his musical career... BUT! I'd definitely smash a chair over the head of any guy who goes towards the jukebox to put this garbage on, thus starting a bar fight. 1 Star regardless of his album.
Bob Dylan's voice is unbearable.
I could never get through a Bob Dylan album
There’s only 1001 albums in this thing and it’s unbelievable they would waste so many entries on this worthless fraud.
That voice....
It was at this moment where I realized that I am not a Bob Dylan fan. His vocal delivery makes it hard for me to get into the lyrics since his voice sounds like he’s on the verge of falling asleep in the recording studio. Also, the rusty harmonica solos give me a fucking headache. I won’t deny the influence this record had on the political side of things, but this was a pretty jarring first listen for me. Maybe someday it’ll all make sense to me, but for now, I’m giving it a hard pass.
*A terrible album, terrible vocals, totally NOT easy to listen to.
God I hate the way Bob Dylan sings. It sounds like he’s forcing out a turd at the end of every line. Yeah yeah yeah like a rolling stone is a big hit but beyond that who the hell listens to Bob Dylan and goes hey yeah I’m going to make this guy my favorite artist. Plus the album cover for this makes him look like a lesbian.
harmonica goes hard, not enough to save it
Yes
The more I’m subjected to Bob Dylan’s music, the more I dislike it. As much as I try to find the appeal, I simply can’t. His voice is terribly grating and I cannot get past it. His writing/lyricism also has the tendency to be too pretentious.
Listening to Bob Dylan is a chore. It is the opposite of fun. I know he's a good poet, but I can read lyrics on Genius and skip the interminable tedium of... this.
Sometimes, I lay awake at night wondering if there's a god, and if he's kind and loving. Usually, I wake up in the morning and I've forgotten all about that, and go ahead and start listing to my album of the day. Sometimes, though, I get a Bob Dylan album, and it really makes me think again. Right now, I think if there is a god, he certainly isn't benevolent. If he was, he wouldn't make me listen to Dylan and his hellish harmonica.
Puta mierda ( no lo escuché)
Bob Dylan? Not a fan. Let’s see if this album changes my mind … Halfway through, my mind is still firmly anti-Dylan. I feel like Dylan’s writing is an inside joke. Like there’s some real substance there, but I walked up in the middle of a deep conversation and was given no context, just made to listen to the remainder. I think you just really have to like Dylan’s voice to truly appreciate him. I just don’t. It’s like nails on a chalkboard to me the majority of the time (he has a few songs I can listen to without desiring earplugs). The musicianship on the album is undeniable. There’s some great guitar work and excellent harmonica. None of that trumps Dylan’s voice. Unfortunately. My mind continues to be firmly anti-Dylan. Oh lord, do I dare look to see how many Dylan albums are on this list?
I tried, but I am not a big fan of Bob Dylan's works. Appreciate the art, but it is not for me.
I promise I tried really hard to finish this but it's just not enjoyable at all.
Don't get it, he can't sing songs to long.
Not my cup of tea 1/5
Nope! The harmonica hurts my ears.
As Bob Dylan goes, this album is good. As good music goes, this is not. This is one of Bob’s most tolerable albums. The folksy side is toned down a pitch and the bluesy rock is turned up a degree. Bob is widely recognized as one the greatest lyricist ever, that is something I have tried really hard in my life to agree with, but I cannot. He changed the way lyrics were written in western music (or at least music sang in English). His influence is undeniable but; he has a shit voice, can never find a real melody, the band/music is never anything amazing, and the production values are always lacking (compared to his contemporaries). This album has a few toe tapping moments but is quickly ruined by his squealing, nasally voice or a high pitched harmonica mixed to be waaaay too loud. Most of his singing is to a melody of a 2nd grader reading a haiku to his class about his favorite Disney character. I have tried to like Bob, I truly have. I’ve listen to this album several times before today, as well as many others. My conclusion is that either all Bob fans are in on a giant troll job or they all intentionally contrarian. I almost always have laugh out loud moments while listening to a Dylan record, this one at least five moments like that. This album is in so many Top 10, 20 list and it is astonishing to me that any record that has Thin Man and Desolation Road on it could be considered for anything other than a crime against music. Ballad of a Thin Man is a prime example of why Bob is trash. Those lyrics are just bad, period - I will take objectors! And Desolation Road is a run-on ramblings of someone who thinks what’s he’s saying is cool/relevant/worthwhile. It is grade A pretension at its finest. 1.8/10 #61/1001
Grauenvoll
No, enough Bob Dylan.
Ei lähteny ei sitten niin yhtään. Erityismaininta huuliharpun ärsyttävyydestä. Pitikö viimeinenkin biisi venyttää yhteentoista minuuttiin?? :D Varmaan tarinankerronta isossa roolissa, mutta oon huono kuuntelemaan sanoituksia. Dylanin kuuntelu jäänyt ylipäätään vähälle, varmaan just siks ettei oo koskaan puhutellut kun on yrittänyt tutustua.
First album in the Dylathon. I don't actually know where to begin with this guy, so I'm gonna check the book. A departure from traditional folk stylings towards the rockstar image Dylan would later build. Artful, literate. The vocals are shit. Like, really, really bad. There's probably some merit to the lyrics, though I'm not keen on listening to them when I'm constantly being rubbed down with the auditory equivalent of sandpaper. This, unfortunately, means that I am SOL when it comes to discussing this album, as I imagine that the lyrics and songwriting are the main draws. Instrumentally, this album leaves a lot to be desired. The harmonica from hell is the most egregious musical showing, though there are other baffling instrumental choices such as the organ and sub-par guitars, which contribute towards an overall displeasing sound. Pair this with the excruciating length of the song and you have a huge swing and a miss. I really did not like this album and I'm worried about the six future albums that I have yet to wade through.
If you take 2 steps back from the microphone, the harmonica might actually be enjoyable.
I’m so sorry Timothee chalamet, he sounds SOOO WHINY and the way he is singing like he’s forcing something out of his throat just isn’t sounding right to me. The harmonica playing needs to take many lessons from the piano man because I’ve never hated how much a harmonica sounds, even worse than a kid with a harmonica from the dollar store.
fuck bob dylan
I absolutely cannot stand Bob Dylan's voice, this was probably my least favorite album I've encountered on this website so far.
There is NO reason to have so many of his albums on this list taking up space when one or two sufficiently showcase his abilities. Look at him on this cover and tell me you don’t want to dunk this dumb jerk’s head in a toilet and throw the harmonica in after!!
Soooo.... I can see my pleas for harmonica extraction have fallen on deaf ears... which mine now are... Is Dylan's M.O. to lead with one well-written (and badly performed) classic, and then fill the rest of the album with rambling garbage? If so, couldn't we have given him just a greatest hits entry and saved some room for other groups (possibly of non-Anglo origin) that absolutely should have appeared on this list but likely don't? Unfortunately for this album, my generosity for Dylan's songwriting was spent on the last rating.
I don't give a flying fuck about this album. In my 29 years on this earth, I’ve listened to my fair share of music, and Highway 61 Revisited is hands down one of the most disappointing disasters I’ve ever encountered. Bob Dylan’s vocals on this record are, without exaggeration, some of the worst I have ever sadly experienced, making every track an exercise in sheer auditory torture. I'll admit there are a few fleeting moments where the album shows a glimmer of what others seem to celebrate. Some of the lyrics are clever on paper, and a couple of the guitar riffs manage to hint at the potential of raw musical genius. These sparse moments, however, are so few and far between that they hardly make a dent in my overall assessmentFrom the very first track, I found myself struggling to connect with anything Dylan was trying to say. The lyrics, which are often hailed as groundbreaking, feel mumbled and incoherent when paired with what I can only describe as one of the most painful vocal performances in modern music history. Rather than drawing me into a vivid world of storytelling, the album leaves me bewildered and annoyed. The production itself isn’t much better. While some might appreciate the raw, unfiltered sound as a hallmark of Dylan’s early work, for me it just accentuates every flaw. The mix does nothing to salvage the overall feel; instead, it amplifies the awkward, monotone delivery that runs rampant throughout the record. There’s a sense of disarray here that makes the entire album feel messy and unpolished. Even if I were to try and find a redeeming quality, I simply can’t. The supposed genius of Dylan’s songwriting is completely overshadowed by his infuriating vocal style on this album. Every track is a reminder of what I consider to be one of the worst vocal experiences in my life, making it impossible for me to appreciate any aspect of Highway 61 Revisited. In summary, despite its historical significance and the accolades it’s received from others, this album is a complete miss for me. It’s a relentless barrage of uninspired vocals and chaotic production that I just can’t stomach. Zero out of five stars—and that’s being generous.
Getting through this was a chore. Got worse every time there was another grating harmonica solo
I’m sorry, it’s bad. I’m sure it’s crucial to music history or something and I’m sure his stories are worth telling but it just sounds bad. Sorry to this man and to my music teacher from university who loved him. Edit: I’m back. I think I liked desolution row the best but maybe that’s just because it was the last one and I knew it would be over. I wonder how many times he said the word ‘said’ on this album.
tis
Not listening to this shit
There wasn't really any aspect of this album that I liked. The vocals absolutely sucked it was hard see past them. I eventually did, and I thought both the acoustic and electric guitarwork was below average. There were no real changes of pace in the songs and it all became a drag. The harmonica solos sucked too. Usually I love these random instruments in songs but it was just blasted as loud as possible down the mic. It was a tough one to get through
Rolling Stone aside, I found it a tough listen.
I honestly hated every second of this. His voice is shocking.
I’m not a country fan, but I’m not a fan of his voice nor am I a fan of the harmonica. I like the names of each song, my favourite song from the album was “from a Buick 6” as it was pretty fast pace song. Overall 1/10 not for me
Stop this awfulness
Bob Dylan can suck this
Lame
Ugh every rhyme makes me wince. I hate it. I guess I can respect it if I’m comparing it to like early 1900s blues which did a lot of this stuff and then Dylan comes in and juices up the form. I get it. Yes it’s important but it just sucks man. It just sucks.
"And you're sick of all this... repetition" (Queen Jane Approximately) Yes, Bob, I am. Why are all of the songs so long? Not a fan - feels like I'm stuck in a loop, they all sound the same.
Strong 1
More Dylan. Supposedly prime Dylan. It still sucks. Fuck you, Bob.
No idea what he's singing about. There's obviously some sort of story but I lost interest halfway through each track. "Something is happening here but you don't know what it is" that's correct Mr Dylan I have absolutely no clue.
poopy bob
third album of Bob Dylan that i’ve listened to on this list and i’ve only liked a handful of songs combined. really wish I could see the hype around him but it’s just not good to me. couldn’t grasp this album either. kdot just dropped a response (finally) so maybe that took some life away but damn (pun intended).
11 minutes is too long for a song with the exact same melodic and rhythmic structure throughout.
<giant eye roll>
Idk how people enjoy bob Dylan, he can’t sing and all his lyrics are just nonsense. Bad
ugh.
Knowing that I absolutely hate Bob Dylan, I thought I'd actually give this a crack. And you know what, "Like a rolling stone" is his least utterly shit. His voice is atrocious. And it's over 6 minutes, which is approximately 5½ minutes too long, because enough is established within the first 30 seconds to tell you everything you need yo know. We then go into Tombstone Blue. Which is bad blues and a voice that doesn't suit blues generally. "It takes a lot to laugh. It takes a train to cry" establishes that Dylan has attempted to catch the 17:30 east coast main line service from King's Cross on a Friday afternoon. You know what, I tried. And Bob Dylan is every tiny bit as shite for this as literally every other record.
Really just can't get into his music
Definitely not my style. I can’t think of a single Bob Dylan song that I like.
Whining vocals, I am sure there is meaning in the lyrics but it really is just boring. Obviously this will offend many, I just don’t need it in my life, boring.
Classic rock....a little too "folksy" for me.
At track 4 I completely gave up on and pulled a DNF. If you need proof the editors needed better representation to bring a more diverse showcase of albums and less bland nonsense, this is it.
Sorry meneer Korsmit.
Although "Highway 61 Revisited" is the highest acclaimed albums in Dylan's collection, this album did not age well. Any person can only listen to so much nasally whining and incomprehensible babble.
Boring.
Not my style, i prefer not to review but i have to, i would give 1 because i only enjoyed 1 song
It's people like Bob Dylan who lead me to believe that people with very little talent can succeed in life. Not a fan.
Basically not singing. Hated.
Did not like it at all.
Not for me
Really don't like his music.
Sorry, just don't like his voice. Move along - nothing to hear here. Uno Star
1001 albums to listen to before you die template. Genre: unknown Instruments: 2/5 Modern Translation: 2/5 Dance Potential: 2/5 Listening Location: at home doing chores Favourite Song: NA Made me feel: Frustrated. I hear good things about Bob Dylan and I am confused because I couldn’t even finish this album.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Whoever “found” Bob Dylan needs to rethink their choices in life.
I hope I don't do this often because I don't feel good about it, but I couldn't bring myself to finish this album. Not even just a sample of each song. I've heard that Dylan is a love-it or hate-it situation, and I've learned that I'm soundly in the latter camp. This album has the personality of that one guy you went to high school with who could undeniably shred on guitar, but had the personality and conversation skills of a potato.
The album was just boring. The songs were long and repetitive, but not in a catchy way. I couldn’t wait for it to be over
Same thing with all the other Bob Dylan projects on here; while I appreciate the artistry and influence, I just do not care for any of these songs and have no interest in listening to any of them again.
I was not looking forward to this; It was thankfully a short album. I’ve tried in the past and just can’t get along with Dylan, it’s always puzzled me why my mother owns a Bob Dylan album! This album didn’t elicit a single emotional reaction from me other than irritation at the nonsense lyrics, cacophonous music, and off-key warbling. If I had to pick a ‘favourite’ track it’s ironically the final track 'Desolation Row’ 1/5
Obvious talent, but not really my style
No. Stop with the Dylan.
Didn't rate it. Almost 60 years later than it was written but very repetitive songs and I don't know what any of his parables are about. It's like 'the blind speckled frog said to the tangerine queen, how does it feel? <Harmonica solo>'
Didn't like it at all, harmonica was jarring
Did not like it, annoying sounds
I find this album generally understimulating. Bob Dylan's is like a monotone painting with a backing band that offers little more underneath. Not for me
Definitely not my taste. I'm not really able to focus on lyrics while working so my review is really only dependent on sound, and the instrumentation and singing was not enjoyable for me for passive listening.
hate bob dylan
This made me hate harmonica
it wasnt good
[Nee, lass mal.
Skipped Rolling Stone; I've heard it too many god damn times and I don't think it's a great song. Tombstone Blues surprised me initially, I liked it more than I thought I would, but then it just kept going on for almost 6 minutes with little change. The rest of the album was a chore; the harmonica in Queen Jane gave me a headache, even after I turned it down, and that fucking spin-whistle in HWY 61, what in the pretentious-folk-hero-hippy-square-scaring-mid-60's-edge-lord kind of fucking bullshit is that?!? Well, the album is almost over at least, this last song is only...11 minutes longWHATTHEFUCKBOB!!!!
Can't think of a single Dylan song I like and didn't find one on this album. Not only is his voice annoying as all hell, way too much harmonica in his songs. The only artist who has effectively used the harmonica in their music, off the top of me head, is Ray Wiley Hubbard. Think I put on some Hubbard to wash whatever this was out of my head. I wonder if the drugs were better back in the day that made be people this was good music. Sorry Dylan fans
I understand that you like Bob Dylan but did you have to put all the fucking discography? Seriously?
Whiney bullshit.
It’s like rap but without the beats
bra album :D
Pretty standard album, nothing stood out to me. Never really listened to Bob Dylan before.
Usually with music, the instruments speak to me first before lyrics. That said, I could NOT enjoy this album. My key takeaway from this is that I'm really upset whenever people say they don't like Bob Dylan and Tom Petty, because TP is in a CLASS OF HIS OWN. And Dylan can't sing. Half the time he switches to spoken word and it feels like a cop-out. I felt that the harmonica and special effects were forced and did not add to the songs. I can't even get behind giving it 2 stars because of Like a Rolling Stone.
i heard like a rolling stone so many times that I don't have any opinions on it anymore i couldn't end this i got to track 2 and became completely bored i don't like this this list was made by a lot of straight white man i just know it
This is my first time listening to Bob Dylan, so bear with me for a moment. This album's main feature is its storytelling, which is some of the best I've ever heard. Particularly in Desolation Road and Ballad of a Thin Man, the latter is my favorite song from the album. A major part of the storytelling in this album, for me, was the tone it established. While it sometimes varies from song to song, each track in the album for me is tied together by a, for lack of a better word, "highway" tone. Personally, I believe the instrumentals are more so there to help convey the tone of the storytelling than to sound good, but conveying tone and quality musicianship go hand and hand, so they still sound good. Every instrument for me (slide whistle included) reinforced the "highway" tone, like something you'd hear an old jailbird singing in their jailcell. There are instances (most notably the acoustic guitar in Desolation Road) where the instrumentals are really interesting and high quality, but never does the musicianship beat the lyricism and storytelling, which I believe is Bob Dylan's strong-suit if I'm not mistaken. My only grip is that some of songs feel like they go on for one or two verses longer than they should, but for what reason in particular I can't really grasp for myself.
Love this album, some duds, but overall great
