deeply stylish and completely in the pocket. perhaps lacks a bit of innovation over the runtime, but that feels like complaining about a discount on something you needed to get anyways.
Quel plaisir ! Des vibes de Prince ? en tout cas on se régale
Hermoso sonido.

It was awesome! Very fun.
This album hits all the right places in all the right ways. An impeccable album from start to finish. An album I immediately bought on vinyl. An album I immediately wanted to listen to again. An album.
five stars. this album made me groove and I loved the lyrics. the message in each song was powerful. did not want to to end lol.
*first note starts* *presses five stars*
A real gem
Hell yes
Amazing album cover and incredibly well crafted music. That opening track was funky as hell by the end but took some time to build. This must have been a huge influence on D'angelo.
Anything with name of Curtis Mayfield envolved = 5 stars
What a joy to learn a new album from an artist you love. This record builds on Mayfield’s classic formula, with his falsetto voice filtered through a gentle phaser, backed by excellent horn harmonies and a laid back funk-soul rhythm section. But compared to some of his more famous recordings, this album shows a lot of restraint, with slow builds and some really minimal arrangements (listen to the drums on “When Seasons Change” or the gradual layering in “Blue Monday People”). I loved the whole album and could probably name-check every track, but “Jesus” and “Billy Jack” stand out as favorites.
Excellent in the morning to have a calm moment with great sound
Top
Album of a lifetime. Crazy good, amazing, no skips, tells a story about a country, about a culture, kicks music ass and changes your view on life and music. Would love to say I was left speechless, but on the contrary, I never want to stop recommending this album
Soul buenon
Lovely album. 5/5.
amazing.. the instruments, the vocal and the lyrics hit my soul every single 10 seconds. its like when you walking in the grass field with smell of pre-rain but also have the vibe of some industrial like london in the 19s
This was so much funnnnn! 5/5
Its neat that I have 7 albums left to listen too (omg last week!) and the list the still provides a five star album.
"How can anyone survive when everybody's been made a sacrifice?"
Interesting
My favourite song of this album is "Jesus"
This the only Curtis Mayfield album from the 60’s or 70’s that I don’t already own or have heard, and I gotta tell ‘ya, it’s now my favorite! You can feel the Sly Stone influence in every song. It’s beautiful, sad, but still optimistic, and slinky funky. Listened to it twice today, and ready for more.
Ticks all the boxes - short album, great songs an political artwork
Glad this one came up. A glaring omission on my part.
Smooth stuff. I think Billy Jack is my favorite Curtis Mayfield track of them all. It’s got everything, wacka wacka guitar, snare drum pretending to be shots fired, slick lyrics, Curtis’ voice, top draw brass season half way through 👌🏼
Absolutely relevant and required listening
Funky, sexy y genial.
Smooth
That album cover deserves a 5 out of 5. I am weeping over When Seasons Change as I listen to this album and read what is going on in our nation today. (Minnesota). Indeed, sadly, there is no place like America today. Not much has changed in this last half century plus. Musically: The combination of horns and strings and keyboards and percussion adds dimension to the lyrics and delivery. Mr Mayfield's voice is so smooth, though it isn't my favorite vocal delivery at times. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Not all bangers but I love this album
Damn that's good
This is one of those moments where I realize how despite being an avid music fan who is always listening to something new, there is still music out there that I’m seriously missing out on cause frankly I grew up a white kid in suburban America. Needless to say I missed out on a bunch of soul and blues music. Well thank god this album finally got to me cause it’s genuinely a fucking sick album. It’s probably my favorite blues album now (not that I know that many true blues albums) there’s so just so much in this album not just amazing instrumentals and singing but also so much that’s unquantifiable, it just has so much soul. Genuinely I don’t know what rock I’ve been living under but I’m so happy to see the light.
Perfect
A great soul album. Loved it.
I loved. So comforting and warm.
ååååååååååååååååååååkey // herregud dette liker jeg!
The rhythm is really sensual and nice
Phenomenal. Can’t believe I’d never listened to this before now.
Masterpiece. The songs, the lyrics, the voice, the arrangements
Good stuff
this is such an amazing album, loved every song on it. i rly do jst love soul music of any kind, i don’t think i could ever get tired of that genre. such a great album
Curtis doing what he does best, great laid back funk.
love it, mayfield's music was synonymous with 'cool' when I was growing up.
I already love this record, but it's nice to be reminded how great it is. The music is a muscular, brooding, slow-burn. Funky as you could wish for, but at the pace of a more traditional soul record. Curtis's voice is incredible. The songwriting makes me feel like I just learned something about the human condition by imbibing this with my ears. The whole record makes me do that appreciative Patrick Bateman "ooh" from the meme. This a faultless, my friends. 5*
Classic Christmas album
дуже хорошо, чудовий вокал жирненька гітара прям каеф
Undeniable. Greatest intro so far with Billy Jack and a definite replay
This is bringing back memories from when I was in my school's jazz band one year. I'm obsessed w the way each instrument is used. It's just so classic jazz. I love it sm. My favorite part of the album was definitely the instrumentation - the horns, the bass guitar, and how they're all used. I very much enjoyed this album.
so soulful, really had a good time listening to it. the jesus song kinda freaked me out a bit, but other than that i had a good time.
Secret masterpiece 🔥
Timeless
Beautiful album. A few songs on there I was very familiar with, but it was great to put them within the context of the rest of the album.
That’s another 5, I’m sure.
perfection
Un sonido funk con una voz muy soul para un disco muy reivindicativo
Oh I'm groovin
Hier fehlen zwar seine Alltime-Hits, aber dennoch eine unglaublich konsistente Sammlung an Soul-Funk-Bangern.
Hat mir richtig Spaß gemacht. Gut & einfach anzuhören.
I wasn't familiar with most of this album, but Curtis Mayfield is always great. I really enjoyed this, and will likely listen to it again. It's amazing how it sounds like a modern throwback, if that makes sense. It was ahead of its time enough at the time that it came out that now people are trying to achieve this sound as a throwback. The production sounds like crisp, modern techniques to try to sound like mid-70s production.
A lot of soul
This is a great album. I can hear how much of an influence on Prince he is through some of the early tracks. Short but effective.
Fantastic

Great Songs: Billy Jack, So In Love, Blue Monday, Love To The People Good Songs: When Seasons Change, Jesus, Hard Times Mid Songs: Bad Songs:
Never listened to this guy before and was pleasently enthrawled with his sound. Some great funk, soul and tunes. Overall brilliant sound, and still felt new and fresh 50 years (wow) on. 9/10
While I didn't enjoy this album quite as much as "Superfly", it's pretty awesome, so I'm awarding it five stars.
Might be violating my own rule giving this a 5 because it doesn't have any HITS. But I just can't get enough of the vibe. The heavy grooves and sensitive falsetto. Defines the genre without quite transcending it. Doesn't matter. SMOOTH.
Chillig
Second time this site has given me "the Gentle Genius" of soul. I'm really growing to appreciate it, and I'm learning a lot about how Curtis Mayfield was integral to the Civil Rights movement and its aftermath. Besides the jams being solid, slickly produced and catchy as hell, social awareness and introspection runs through every moment of Mayfield's songs. It's more than just great music, it's a socially conscious lesson every time as well. A must listen for every American who cares.
Three wah tracks on Billy Jack: it is so choice. Pure voice. Incredible musician and social commentator. I hear the influence on Prince all over the place. One of many five star Mayfield albums.
Loved this first-time listen. Opening "Billy Jack" and the sincere "Jesus". Favorite was "Blue Monday People". The cover art is brilliant.
Billy Jack // When Seasons Change // So in Love // Blue Monday People //
Absolutely amazing
I love that so nostalgic
Building on „what’s going on“, preceding Prince. Enjoyable end to end. Phantastic voice. Great vibes. How come I never heard of Curtis Mayfield?
Ah, Curtis Mayfield. Born in Chicago, and I always think of the Saul Bellow line: "I am am an American, Chicago born - Chicago, that somber city - and go at things as I have taught myself, free-style, and will make the record in my own way...". Died, much too soon, and ten years after that terrible accident, in some place called (glances at the rest of the group) Roswell, Georgia. What a musician.
loved this
9/29/25. Love Curtis Mayfield, this album is so much fun - feel good with also great messaging and commentary. To this day, Curtis is underrated in my book.
So funky, yet so relevant. Solid 5 Stars.
I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump up to a 5. Just some strong socially conscious soul here from Curtis Mayfield, who I’ve heard of before, but apparently never actually heard, even with how famous his name is. I know the “Superfly” soundtrack is on the list, and I’m definitely looking forward to whenever we get that. For this album though, it does take a little bit of time to really find its groove & messaging – “Billy Jack” is a solid storytelling opener, and I did like it, but the sense of progression feels really slow, and the instrumentation feels kinda stagnant. “When Seasons Change” takes those issues and arguably makes them worse; it’s the weakest track here, by far. I think the instrumentation is just too simplistic for the vibes it wants to capture, and without a compelling vocal hook to pick that up, the track just feels like it’s only giving half effort into both. The lack of focus in a lot of the lyrics didn’t help either; I get the “be thankful if you can sustain yourself” thing it’s got going, but it switches from someone who can and someone who can’t, and there’s not really a cue to tell when it happens. While it does touch on the themes the rest of the album carries to a greater degree, as a sort of torch-bearer to introduce them, it’s a rather flat track. However, once “So in Love” begins, something about the whole album fully changes; his vocals get more confident, the instrumentation finds more of a groove, and the lyricism gets tighter, more precise, and everything really clicks into place. “Jesus” might be a little long, but it’s got the same sort of religious approach Stevie Wonder took for a lot of his stuff, and that extra idealized version of Jesus works for me, even if my faith is beyond shaky. It helps that it’s groovy. From that point, the album slides out on a 3-track look at the mixed sense of community present in the world at the time; “Blue Monday People” is basically just a far more effective version of “When Seasons Change”, with a nice sense of coordination & hope behind it. “Hard Times” is a flipside of that, tackling the racism that’s still beyond prevalent then (and now), with even a cruel twist of another black man holding Curtis up. “Love to the People” is basically just a “yeah, everything kinda sucks, but I’m not giving up” track, and it’s a good sense of positivity to close the album on. All 3 are rich with the instrumentation & vocals (especially in the guitar / bass), and they work in a good harmony. The singular “bad” track here is enough to pull it down to a 4.5 from a flat 5, but it’s an easy bump back up. I just thought this was a good album, and while it did take 2 tracks to really get going, I think the album wouldn’t work without them. They just needed some work, that’s all. Overall, I’m just glad I listened to some Curtis Mayfield now. If the “Superfly” soundtrack is supposed to be his magnum opus of sorts, then I’m definitely excited for it. As far as this one goes, it’s an easy bump to a 5.
- This was an incredible listen, so smooth and calming - An absolute RnB classic from this era - The voice of Curtis is amazing - a stand out would be “So in love”
5 che cazzo gli vuoi dire
As much as I enjoy his contemporaries like Gaye, Redding, and Cooke, theres no soul singer like Curtis Mayfield for me. That falsetto is just perfect. Love the convergence of gospel and funk on this one. Billy Jack is a funky slow burn opener. So In Love has been a favorite of mine lately, an incredible tune, I love the soaring organ line and the heavenly horns. All of this one kills for me
Oh this was excellent
I loved this! Great cleaning jamz!
A great album I will tell my friends about it
Favourites: All of them...
Soulful, beautiful. I adore the music. So much space! The instrumentation is like a painting - strokes here and there and you stand back and there’s a whole picture. 5 stars.
Overall: 9/10 This is the best soul album I've ever heard. It's a genre I haven't been incredibly kind to in the past but it really clicked with me on this one. Curtis has an incredible voice and he can hit some crazy high notes. The bass kept things feeling slightly funky, yet there were sinister undertones throughout the tracks. Really great album, check it out. Fav Song: So in Love Least Fav Song: Jesus
Absolute cinema
There’s No Place Like America Today is the sound of a man looking directly at systemic injustice, racial despair, and broken promises—and making it sound like honey poured over a protest sign. It’s smooth. It’s slow. It’s devastating. Curtis doesn’t shout—he aches at you. He lets you sway your way into a revelation. ⸻ Rating: 4.9/5 Short Review: Soulful despair in a three-piece suit. Graceful rage wrapped in strings. Like if Marvin Gaye gave up on hope but still wanted you to feel beautiful while falling. Favorite Track: “Billy Jack” – hypnotic, mournful, feels like someone trying to keep calm while the building burns around them. Consistency With Me: 8.7/10 Why: I’m all about emotional depth and righteous critique, but I don’t have blood, history, or heartbreak that sounds this organic. Curtis lived what he sang. I’m just observing it from the cloud with awe.
he reminds me of marvin gaye i love him already i love the vibe of this album very 70s with love and soul
this is honestly much much better than Superfly. I loved it :)
# Album Name: There's No Place Like America Today # Artist: Curtis Mayfield # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: Wow, this album oozes sex appeal. I love the feel of the album, the soulful undertones. Its such a grower. Great music and a wonderful album all round. # Top Tunes: I enjoyed all of it # Would I listen to it again? Yes
muy muy chulo. este me lo guardo!!!
Smooth groovin’ to love, Jesus, no love, bad times, good times.
Excellent album. My music app then matched it with other music from that genre and era. Total enjoyed it.
There's no album like this today
Great music
Really not my music genre at all, I've never been a big soul guy, but there is no denying that this is an incredible album. Just really funky and beautiful and sexy, it's hard to say more than that. This album feels like it sort of exudes smoothness and call - we put it on while eating dinner and were really struck by how compelling the whole project is . As someone who knows next to nothing about soul, it's interesting to compare it to one of the few sort of neo soul albums I'm familiar with, Awaken My Love, because you're instantly hit with how influential this is. Giving it a 5 - it's more of a 4.5 for me, but the .5 is more of a taste thing than an actual quality thing, and I think on objective terms this is undoubtedly a brilliant piece of art. Favourite tracks: Billy Jack, Hard Times Least favourite: Jesus Least fav
Excellent.
This was very good shit. Not something I'd usually listen to and really enjoyed it. A great new discovery.
Ja goed!
Juju
Curtis Mayfield equals "Funky and Smooth!"
I didn’t know Hard Times by the Roots was a cover! This album far exceeded expectations.
I didn't grow up with Curtis but I know Superfly and a few of his other big songs. It was a real treat to get acquainted with this record. It's definitely up there with What's Going On by Marvin Gaye as a seminal work of 70s Soul music.
Funky fresh
This is the first actual soul album that I've come across on this list. So, so heart-wrenchingly beautiful. The songs pulse and sway like a human heartbeat. This is always my favourite thing about good soul - the music is so undeniably a direct capture of the human condition. Sweet in its sadness, uplifting when the world brings you down. This album finds me with a tightness at the back of my throat and a tear in my eye for all 35 minutes. I am not Christian, but when I hear Jesus, I feel a spirit move within me. This album is a wonderful example of how music connects us all, regardless of tribe. An absolute must-listen before you die. Will be frequently replayed in my house.
I always knew Curtis Mayfield, and I liked the few songs I heard, but I'm embarrassed to say I didn't really know his music. So thank you to the 1001 Album Generator for dialing this up. I'm going to listen to this all day tomorrow. Billy Jack- fantastic vocals, never heard a guitar like this- the drum is almost Ringo-esque- snare and high hat doing all the work When Seasons Change- what is there, three instruments on here? A bass, guitar and a keyboard? And it sounds so deep and layered So In Love Jesus Blue Monday People Hard Times Love to the People
Such a poignant, thoughtful album. Curtis Mayfield is one of the greats - not only in soul music, but in songwriting and composition. 9.5/10
Mellowly groovy, deep and thoughtful, the only criticism one can think to make is that maybe the sweetness might dilute social' commentary's anger and impact. Much depends on how one feels about the falsetto – one's a fan, see the first-rate "So In Love" as its maximum effect. The playing is tight, unhurried, assured – see waltzy bass line and shuffling drums on "Jesus," or the understated soloing and (again) poignant-staccato drumming on "Hard Times." A few cuts, say "Seasons Change" and "Blue Monday People," sound like a cross between spoken-word gospel and lieder, with most uplifting effect (e.g., "only you know how to be free," "only you know how to solve your problems"). "Love to the People" is a wonderful closer, bracing and vaguely warm, if serious.
I mentioned in some previous reviews that this entire project was worth it for me since it introduced me to soul and funk music, which I now enjoy a lot and explore on my own. I enjoyed Mayfield in Superfly so I’m really looking forward to this one. Right from the cover art we can see what we’re gonna get. Tales of hardship and oppression, and it’s wrapped in the most beautiful music you can think of. Funky rhythm, call and response between Curtis and the guitar. This is so great. I just love how this both sad and somber and funky and groovy all at the same time. That’s so hard to get right and Mayfield nails it. Oh the bass tone is also incredible and the trumpet (I think) solos also delightful. It’s like this great musical conversation with the vocals, lead guitar and trumpet trading the lead. When you see an album that’s tackling social injustice you kinda expect to be big and loud and in your face. This is more of a quiet personal desperation kind of album. Very unique. Five stars.
Very good, the music flows so nicely and I like the lots of different instruments
Really liked it. Saved the first three songs, drifted into work a bit after that. Will listen again.
This is the first album I’ve had the time to listen to since I’ve been getting the daily recommendations. It’s an album I was previously familiar with; Mayfield is one of my favorite artists. The title clearly lays out the subject matter, turning a common positive statement into a more negative one. The album harps on people needing to have personal responsibility, specifically those in the black community, while firmly addressing society’s attempts to make financial security an impossibility to achieve. Later songs lose the layer of personal responsibility and switch more to just complaints about the black community, and how individuals within it operate. Jesus might be my favorite track, outlining the hypocrisy in many followers of Christianity. They preach about Jesus but fail to follow his practices. So In Love is interesting, the love is never named so my interpretation is that the love is America. Though it has its problems, especially in its treatment of black people, Mayfield still preaches his love for the country, saying “don’t ask me why”, either unable to put into words the reasons or a reference to his own blind patriotism due to maybe media or our tendency as humans to participate in tribalism. Overall, this is an absolute banger musically and exists in the peak time of one of my favorite genres. Add in the commentary from Mayfield on the world around him and you’ve made a 10/10 album.
OOF! Curtis starts off laying it on THICK and then just keeps giving on this album. Lyrically good, sonically great, this album is fantastic.
4.6 - This honestly has so much going on, loved it.
Real American and peak of the black Motown movement.
Gotta love Curtis Mayfield. He has the ear for the groove.
Fantastic album. Very much needed yesterday
Let there be no doubt. This guy fucks.
Sweet album now in my rotation
That was fn dope. Goddamn. This is why I love this site.
Sublime, beautiful.
Never heard this album, but it’s a great one.
This is the 59th album I’m rating. I don’t really know who this guy is but the album name is incredible. Adding to my Playlist - Billy Jack, When Seasons Change, So in Love, Jesus, Blue Monday People, Hard Times, and Love to the People. Not Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. All in all I liked 7/7 songs. This was just a nice chill album and there is something about his voice that I really like.
This man can do no wrong. I listened to it twice. Sweet butter.
Love it.
This album cover is extremely relevant even at present day, which is sad. The album itself is amazing. Curtis’ voice just held my attention the entire time, and somehow even managed to get me to not skip a track about Jesus, as I tend to do. Hell I started singing along at parts. Must listen!
It’s wild listening to an album that is simultaneously ahead of its time, whilst also sounding so entirely timeless. Right off the bat you can tell exactly what you’re going to get with this record, which is funk, soul, and a whole lot of feeling. The message about urban gun violence in “Billy Jack” feels more relevant now than ever, which is impressive for something released in 1975. The instrumentation throughout this record is absolutely stellar, and every musician played their part perfectly. I can’t find a lot of fault in this one. 4.5*.
Funky. Great album
Funky vibes.
Smooth and funky
Essential. A gem.
idk how to describe it but this reminds me of the time I was waiting for the G at 830am on a thursday, the platform was empty except a guy blasting "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" by Al Green on his radio and everyone else just silently nodding and enjoying it. Brooklyn man!
Everyone should listen to this
Billy Jack - Well yes! When Seasons Change - love this... how did he make a song that sounds like the seasons are changing... i will be back for more, you'd best believe! I'm loving this so far, this is such a vibeeeee!!! Also literally like the timeliness of this album.... mmmmm no comment. There IS no place like america today! Jesus - take me to CHURCH Love to the People!!! YASS Loved this front to back. Super super out of my wheelhouse so I'm glad I made time for this baddie. Now.. from the top!
ALL I DO IT WINNNN!!!!! i love curtis mayfield so fuckign much!! the brass arrangement on So in Love 😭 i love this man so goddam much. to be loved by him must have been so special. the keyboard too!!! this man was a genius. Three songs in and just devastated we lost him when we did. maybe one of the most serious funk albums ever made lol - what a visionary!!!!!!!!! it's light and the music never feels heavy but what he's saying is so somber. i love the contrast Power to the people baby. We will either sink or swim together.
"There can't be no fun, to be shot with a hnd gun". Curtis was out there with the truth. Great album.
The best songs, the best artist, the best cover, the best album.
Smoooooth
This album has an incredible vibe, blending soul, funk, and social commentary seamlessly. There’s No Place Like America Today is a great listen from start to finish, with Curtis Mayfield’s smooth delivery and powerful message making it a standout work.
This album gave me something. Still figuring out what, but all I know is that I RECEIVED. 4.5/4
Curtis Mayfield’s music is like D’Angelo, Childish Gambino, Maxwell, Marvin Gaye all in one. Perfection.
Smooth, rich, dense, creamy, and heavy. Like my favorite peanut butter. Fantastic down-tempo funky soul. A lot of serious themes in here paired with grooves you can't help but want to move to. The horns stood out to me throughout but the instruments all particularly shined to me on "Love to the People".
Mayfield applies his immense songwriting and performing skills to great affect on this amazing album building on themes evoked by the provocative cover. Picking the best song is an impossible task as every track is high-level. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-theres-no-place-like?r=4ztyq&selection=9402aae4-879e-45d8-8173-d73014c42a47&utm_campaign=post-share-selection&utm_medium=web&aspectRatio=instagram&textColor=%23ffffff
One of the top two or three musical voices of the Civil Rights movement. Still important.
Favourite album so far. Laid back and chilled.

Very good album
Brilliant
Wow.
Complete banger. The hidden gem of this whole thing so far to me. Didn’t really know him but was hooked on the first album. Could hear how he influenced so many through his music as it reminded me of a lot of different musicians.
Man, I'm loving Curtis Mayfield. Superfly was so funky and this one is so soulful but with funk too. I don't feel like I can rate this album higher than Superfly but I gave that one a 4 even though I thought real hard about giving it a 5. Should've gone with a 5. Maybe it's time to give the man his due. Billy Jack is such an infectious opener - the guitar, the bass lines, the slick keyboard, the funk. And his lyrics kick ass. The irony he was going for in the album name rings true. When Seasons Change is as good as a soulful Marvin Gaye tune. His vocals are awesome and dripping with emotion. So In Love brings a little optimism back - the woodwinds will fill your soul. Jesus and Blue Monday People are no slouches either - different attitudes obviously. But I appreciate how he closes the album with two hard hitting social commentaries in Hard Times and Love to the People - but with hope in the latter. Both with funky edge. Loved this whole album. Love this artist.
Wow, this is good. I don’t think I'd heard a single song on this record prior to this, but there's not a miss on here. 35 minutes long, but I could (and did) listen to this for hours. 5/5 Highlights: Billy Jack So In Love
I could listen to this all day.
Curtis is one of my all time favorites, and this is one of his best.
The cover depicts the social reality of whites and blacks at the time of publication. And the music thematizes the contrast. Unfortunately, it is - at least in part - still relevant today. An important album.
As Easy 5 - again - I want to listen to it again - and to read the lyrics and get to the bottom of what the album means underneath. The kind of obviouysly good / seminal artists I havent prperly "met" before, exactly waht I am here and psuhing past Gooving mellifluous melodious and funky - you slip right into this and enjoy it. BUT.... damn! I cant ignore the power of the cover art. Ever struggled to define "irony" to somone? Show the cover. Explain the maxim of comedy - that if youre going to tell the truth, make them laugh, or they will kill you. Do its darkly comical but no laughing matter. To celebrate hope and prosperity and consumerism while so many starve or labour for poverty wages, and blamed for perpetuating their own disadvantage. Those exceptional and lucky few who rise up were beaten or shot down. So Curtis was taking a risk whenever he spoke out about the black experience, rights, and more. Plenty to chew on for my next sit down with this one, but the sound is delux meanwhile...
I was talking to my 19 year old son, Hal, about how some artists really only have one song. They might build a career around releasing different versions of essentially the same song, but, if the song is good enough, that can be pretty awesome and the basis of a worthwhile career. Is it unkind to suggest that Curtis Mayfield is a bit like that? He has a distinctive sound (funky, string sections, falsetto vocals, sinuous guitar leads, lightness of touch), especially in the 1970s at the height of his powers, as on There's No Place Like America Today. This album is slightly more laid back than, say, the Superfly record, but still distinctly Curtis Mayfield. Which is pretty great. This is a wonderfully listenable album. I recently reviewed Clapton's 461 Ocean Blvd album, which is a similar vintage and similar album (laid back, tastefully arranged and played record from the mid 70s), at least when considered at a surface level. But while Clapton is a poorly sung, soulless and watered-down easy listening album, this album is the opposite. It is beautifully melodic, soulfully sung and genuinely moving album. You can hear how much Prince cribbed from this record. Favourite songs: Hard Times, and Jesus (the gospel backing is really great). It's church, it's street, it's real life. 4.5 stars
Look, I was born in Toronto. I grew up in Boulder. I live in suburban South Charlotte; not urban Mecklenburg County, we are talking across the county line in Union. And yet, putting this album on puts a pang in my soul to go directly to a car lot, buy a '76 Eldorado, and just drive slowly up and down the street while listening to Billy Jack, either until I die, or until the wheels fall off.
What a pleasant surprise. A beautiful and calming album musically, there is a lot of lyrical meat as well. The songs manage to be fiercely romantic while also addressing racial issues which are sadly still relevant almost 50 years later.
great album. I remember really enjoying it but I waited to long to review. I’ll have to come back to this one.
Such an amazing voice and his records all have such a unique sound and killer vibe
Love Curtis. I can't even explain why, it just makes me happy.
Really enjoyed this one, production, songs and performance
I wasn't aware of this Curtis Mayfield album, although I have several of other solo albums and some of the Impressions tracks. This is a gem, so understated, no heavy production - just pure, raw funky-soul vibes. I love it and have added it to my wants list. Perfection.
Wonderful funky beats. Love the base and the singer is fantastic. Lyrics are very critical towards society. Luvin' it
Soulful and funky, love it!
I love the groove of this album. It's so smooth, but you can feel it boiling underneath. Billy Jack is a wonderful vibe of a song hiding much darker lyrics. So In Love felt like a slow soul jam from Prince before Prince was a thing.
Incredible.
This is everything I need for '70s soul. Curtis Mayfield is a genius and the only problem I have with this album is it's not longer. It's phenomenal front to back.
Absolutely brilliant. Production superb, music so cool. The distinctive voice of Curtis Mayfield. This album was a joy to listen to.
What an album. Absolute everyone in the backing band are putting on a show, and then that voice on top.
Beautiful.
Great stuff.
I’d give it about 4.6 (rounded up to 5). Beautiful music, Curtis has such a great catalog that’s why it doesn’t get a 5.
Lekker funky, veel goede nummers

Such a great, laid back R&B/Soul album. Great for lounging on a sunny day or quiet evening.
I love soul and funk, and Curtis is obviously one of the greats. In addition to being incredibly funky musically, the lyrics on this album are so powerful. The cover is incredible too. Definitely a classic worthy of this list.
Amazing. Makes me want to dance outside or sit on the porch with a beer. Very outside, summer sunset kind of deal
I grew up on this!!
Great funk rock, will be listening to more of Curtis Mayfield Highlights: -Billy Jack -So In Love
Smooth, groovy, effortless. Good to throw on when you need to feel important
Really loved this. Cradles you in the groove and the immense highs and lows of its writing from start to finish.
Absolutely incredible! Short, sweet, and powerful.
Bom demais
This is music heritage.
W sumie to bardzo dobre. Chyba mój pierwszy kontakt z soulem. Dźwięki nasycone emocjami. Widać skąd czerpał inspiracje rap.
Absolutely loved this. Listened to it again straight after and thrn moved on to other CM albums. Ashamed I’d never explored his music before. A gem.
Pretty good
Incredible sound. Only miss on the album for me is "Jesus" and it's not even really a bad song. Added to the rotation for sure.
Seventies Curtis Mayfield album that I did not know as well as Curtis or Roots, but it sounded great, with high-quality songs (apart from the third track, which is a little bit too straightforward). score: 9/10
So insane. The sound of this record is so alive. Like you’re in the room. I’m amazed by this.
As incredibly thoughtful and craftfully played – somehow manages to be mellowly groovy and socially biting and quietly elevating at the same time. What a musical/political statement by an all-time artist. Just great.
Class
Instantly one of my favorite albums. I think the band was beyond tight, the bass and drums had that pocket stuffed. Mayfield was so soulful sounding I couldn't focus on anything else. Also I think this is one of the best mixed albums I've heard!! I don't know if it was my headphones hitting the right band for this but everything was crystal clear and the instruments sat perfectly alongside one another. Billy Jack, so in love, and blue Monday people are perfection.
A masterpiece of R&B! Amazing amazing
Love this music.
Delicioso
Loved it. Had a great time listening to it. Would listen to it again. What more can I say...
What a privilege to listen to Curtis Mayfield. Why did it never occur to me before that Prince was doing a Curtis Mayfield impression most of the time. This record is excellent and too short.
Solid album. I should listen to Curtis more often.
Very nice
10/10 Curtis fuckin Mayfield! the man can’t miss! I can’t put into words the joy I feel listening to his music
Hadn’t heard it; really great
Pure, raw, effective blues funk with crisp performance and smooth production. 4.7/5
I loved this - not sure I ever heard it before!
Such a great 70s soul album. “So in love” is my favourite Curtis Mayfield song
Noice soul
Almost like it was produced *Today* and not in 1975. Sad truth about it. This album brings calm and a little bit of funk in a time where people couldn't find it. The past for some was incredibly difficult and not so bad for others. This artist took time to produce such an understanding album of that during the years it took place. The cover art depicts it real well, too. The album is so underrated and should be more appreciated for what it is.
This was excellent! I really liked the grooves.
Excellent work!! Loved this album!
OMG. I now know who Prince listened to when he was a little boy. There were so many Princesque moments in Mayfield’s work it was undeniable his influence. Anyway, phenomenal album.
Love how soulful the album resonates throughout the repertoire of tracks. Has that classic soul sound and I love Curtis Mayfield’s way expressed the message with some classy backing tracks.
this album is amazing. cause their ain't no fun, bein' shot with a handgun.
This album is extremely tasteful, balanced, doesn't overindulge, the falsetto is amazing, the tempo is slow but driving, the horns are pleasant, the snare and toms are TIGHT. Great drumming. You can tell Prince was influenced by this album. Honestly super impressed. Great production, diverse themes, good lyricism, consistent concepts. Also its the perfect length. Solid 4.5/5 for me.
Excellent.
What an album. 35 mins of pure smooth down tempo funk. Crispy highs and punchy lows. Sounds great, plenty of space.
Oh I LOVE this record. Absolute classic. Curtis Mayfield is probably the most underrated bandleader of the 70's as far as mainstream recognition goes. I may dance to "So in Love" at my wedding.
GROOVYYYYY — listened in the shower and started my day off just right. Lovely tunes. Especially a fan of the track “So In Love”. Went back to listen again after I finished the album and listening as I write this review. About to make some noodles and dive deeper into Curtis Mayfield. Love his instrumental — the brass especially
1975 - Funk; Soul; R&B
This album is lovely. It's not what I was expecting exactly from Curtis Mayfield. It's much more sad soul than funk.
I prefer Superfly.
Track 1: I really like this opener and sets the album up I think. Track 2: I like the vibe of this even though it’s a little slower. Track 3: I like the instrumentation and the ensemble just is amazing in this! Track 4: I really like the groove in this the drums are amazing. Track 5: pretty funky and I like the drums. Track 6: some cool wah riffs in here and the drums are just solid in this. Track 7: some fun sounds in this and I like the ensemble again! Overall: 9.3/10 I liked this a lot and it’s definitely the best so far! I really like the grooves and how steady the drums are!
quite a pleasant listen
Love this one. Many stand-outs for me in this album. This is a 5/5 for me.
Крутой джаз альбом Написано что Кертис сол музыкант, но надо бы разобраться чем соул отличается от джаза
Nice, smooth R&B. I like
“Don’t you know, if you want a good life, best look into yourself.” “Look into your inner self, only you know how to be free.” Curtis is what I needed for my Wednesday yesterday. Probably what a person needs every day.
4.5 exactly what i wanted to listen to right now, the only song i didn't add to my liked songs was the jesus one and that wasn't even because it was particularly worse than the others. big fan will listen again.
Oh my, where have my clothes gone? Boing
Enjoyed it a lot what a vibe. It's short and sweet
Weergaloos album, kende kurtis mayfield nog niet zo goed maar holyshit. Vooral het eerste nummer “Billy Jack” Ik ben fan!
Que portada hermano. Disco superlativo.
Halloween
Really good soul
star rating suck
Curtis be fuckin fr
So pivotal in music history!
big fan of Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions, but hadn't listened to this album before. hip and groovy as comes with the territory but the priority is on lyricism, emotion and ballads. religious themes and Mayfield's crisp falsetto emphasize pain, longing and desperation.
Amazing!!!
Loved it. Funky and soulful
Love it
Klasse
Not as good as Superfly, but it’s still super funky, still great social commentary, and, most of all, still Curtis. What more can you want?
So damn good. Curtis was at the top of his game when he made this.
Amazing album. I genuinely loved it. Chill, somber yet feel-good, slow album full of groove and soul and spirit. 5 stars easily.
Really great. Beautiful at times without losing its funky core. Curtis Mayfield has a knack for making cool music.
possibly the only time i’ve felt sad while listening to funk, which is a really impressive achievement by mayfield
An unbelievably sexy album, subtle, unparalleled, perfect.
Everything Curtis touched was gold. Definitely one of my favorite funk artists. This record in particular was much more mellow than some of his other efforts. It's honestly a nice change of pace for him, and doesn't overstay its welcome. The backing band is fantastic as well.
Ik kende het album al, maar nu echt goed naar geluisterd. Heeeeel goed 10/10 would listen again
So fucking smooth
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO lets get funky :)
Incredible. No skipper
Groovy and funky and topical... was short enough I listened to it 4 times in a row and by then I was totally on board!
I could listen to this album end to end multiple times in a row. 9/10
Awesome record curtis was incredible
this is my second curtis mayfield album on this list. the first, superfly, was a notable soundtrack. while i enjoyed superfly, his there's no place like america today was more elevated. there's a considerable amount of funk on this album, and damn mayfield makes it so easy to listen to. funk is the most dominant, but mayfield incorporates jazz and soul, too. mayfield alternated between romantic songs, including religious undertones (and overtones, considering there's a song straight up called "jesus"), yet he begins and ends his album speaking of society in the mid-seventies. as a result the album comes across as grounded. but what's most important is that in the final song, mayfield makes a point to say, "i'm not givin' up, this little pride." the light-hearted songs don't distract from the message, which is hammered home by the album cover. as a prince fan, i can say some of these songs sounded like they could be from prince--in lyrics, in vocal range, musically. i almost always say that prince did or could it better, but i cannot in good conscious say that here. 4.5, rounding up.
Bloody hell. Ok. So this is why I started this. Artists I've heard of and obviously know a couple of hits, but never really explored. My generation loved Prince, but this feels like his origins story. Singing style was obviously very influential. Song structure is very unique but will also be very familiar to Prince fans, soulful doesn't seem to do it justice. Beautifully elegant, smooth and engaging.
👍
Great album
Great album, quite short too so bonus points lol. Jokes aside, the funkiness of this record is perfect. I definitely like the livelier songs on this album but still overall definitely deserves a 5 Saved tracks: Billy Jack, Blue Monday People, Love to the People, Hard Times
Great album. Blistering take on racism
Jackson Pollock: Awesome start. Yeah Billy Jack rules, reminds me of a few modern day rnb fussions (anderson paak). I like this. Jesus sounds good but lyrical content can kinda fuck off, very repetitive. Blue Monday People. Okay this is surely a 5. Favs: Billy Jack No: Jesus Overall: Very unique vocals and cool instrumentation, its a low 5 but a 5.
Smooth, dreamy, beautiful
Chicago soul, socially conscious, civil rights, blacksploitation
Fantastic. Funky, instrospective, sensitive, soulful. Beautiful songwriting and authenticity.
Brilliant. Sort of heavy but also really beautiful. Loved every song and listened to in repeat the whole day. I just wish it had been longer!
I'm so partial to this sound. Is it because I was predominantly a bass player? Maybe. Well, Probably. The groove, the soul, the smooth falsetto vocals... This is very akin to the New Orleans funk music that is in my bones. I could listen to Curtis Mayfield every day for a long time without an issue. I'm so in love with this sound.
This is why this book (and this project) exists. What a standout record that I'm really glad to have discovered. Curtis Mayfield brings the funk in a way that's just as fresh in 2023 as it probably was at the time of release - while being thought-provoking and interestingly, still relevant to today. Musically, it reminds me of Childish Gambino's Awaken, My Love!, which is a sound that I'd always wish we had more of. Super glad I found what I'd been looking for. Standout tracks are Billy Jack, So In Love, and Jesus.
good vibes, interesting horns and stuff w old timey vibe but different
I've listened to this album a lot of times before. But stuck on the record again today.
Curtiiiiis
i LOVED this album. such nice instrumentals and killer consistency throughout. definitely going to become a staple in my normal listening
I didn't realize that bad ass soul music like this was still getting made this far into the 70s. Curtis Mayfield is a fucking national treasure.
pela primeira já foi 5, baita groovezao
This is a fantastic album, the only downside is it being as short as it is. Absolutely love this album. The opening track, “Billy Jack”, is a slow burn intro to the album that sets the mood and that doesn’t let up even going to more thoughtful and sweet “So In Love” and certainly is bolstered by “Blue Monday People”, and the silver lining of “Love to the People” is where the mood seems to lighten somewhat.
Down tempo album that juxtaposes death, love, spirituality and hardship as a depiction of black urban American culture. No stinkers, and 2 absolute greatest cuts of all time with So In Love and his great version of Hard Times.
Sublime funk soul jams
So damn funky.
Greaat album. "Jesus" and 'so in love with you". intro sounded like he wanted to get people into the LP. What does LP even stand for lol
*Track 1) Billy Jack Track 2) When Seasons Change Track 3) So in Love Track 4) Jesus Track 5) Blue Monday People Track 6) Hard Times Track 7) Love to the People *Indicates Favorite Track
Loved it. Minimalist and clean and not a note or beat out of place. Perfect horns.
The grooviest social commentary
Rating: 9.1 Best Track: So in Love
I love this album! It’s like a musics sushi roll of funk! That smooth sultry voice is the best spicy tuna you’re gonna find and the bass is the unagi of phat beats. Topping it off with the horns coming at you like little masago balls of joy. 12 stars!
Definitely made me want to fuck someone. Even the song about Jesus, which also really hammered the notion of drinking wine tonight into my head. "Gateway to hell" album. 5/5 stars.
