Great! Lots of songs I recognize but didn't know were related. Not really sure what to add yet
Listened to this album many times before and I love it. Every single song is excellent. I've been through phases of being obsessed with almost every song, so a standout song list would just be almost the full album.
This album is, without a doubt, a modern classic. It's not perfect, but most of these tracks are genre-defining. It's an incredibly forward-thinking record, feeling far beyond its time while simultaneously being the perfect encapsulation of what was to come for the remainder of the '00s and the 2010s. From the production to the songwriting and performances, MGMT really tapped into something special. 9.5/10
Great album! It gets you in a party mood while also feeling a bit melancholic, and it somehow works perfectly.
"Control yourself. Take only what you need from it." Great album that still holds up. I love the Specials' Ghost Town drum beat that makes at least two appearances here. Liked Songs Added: Time To Pretend Electric Feel Kids Pieces Of What
One of my personal top 10 albums of all time. Will never get old.
10/10 no notes
Oh wow, I totally forgot about MGMT. Some of these songs were the club anthems of my youth. No way you can not like those 15 years later, even if you didn't really even like them at the time. But actually there's a lot of richness here that I didn't appreciate as a drunk 20 year old at 3am.
A great album led mostly by two very strong songs, kids and time to pretend. Upbeat music contrasted with the actual lyrics. You can just allow the songs to wash over in happy pop or pay attention to the lyrics for an alternate experience. A great album.
Ah, Oracular Spectacular, an album I know well. This album, in conjunction with Vampire Weekend's self-titled debut, are the reason that I got heavily into indie music in the late aughts through the mid 2010's. It must have been in late 2008 when my brother gave me a burned CD of this album, and I instantly fell in love. I had been out of college for about a year, and throughout my life, I had listened to a lot classic rock and eighties music. Those opening synthesizer sounds on "Time To Pretend" hooked me in from the start; I had no idea that bands were still making music that harkened back to the synthesizers that dominated pop music in the eighties. I still follow MGMT's music (Loss of Life was my favorite album in 2024), but I haven't listened to this album in a while, because I knew it would come up for me eventually on this list. I can't think of a better way to spend a Monday than to try to feel like I'm 24 again! Well, I didn’t feel like I was 24 again, but I sure as hell enjoyed listening to this today. Oracular Spectacular is outstanding from start to finish, and is a shining jewel in the crown of the indie sleaze era. It always blows me away that OS came out in 2007, because it feels like the perfect bridge from the Bush administration to the Obama administration. The themes of disillusionment on this album wound up being incredibly prophetic for the impending financial crisis of 2008, but I guess that’s because some themes are always relevant. The singles off of this album carry a lot of weight in the court of public opinion, and for good reason; all three of them are an absolute blast of pulsing synths, fuzzy guitars, and vivid imagery. Even almost eighteen years later, “Time to Pretend,” “Electric Feel,” and “Kids” all make me want to dance. I’d never noticed before that there are some really subtle background vocals on “Electric Feel” that are absolutely fantastic. “Time to Pretend” will always hold a special place in my heart because it’s the first MGMT song I ever heard, but “Kids” is my favorite off of this album by a slim margin. I know the rest of this album tends to lose people a little bit, but I honestly think the other songs are just as good as the singles. Yes, they don’t have as much of a pop song feel to them, but this is a psychedelic album, through and through. The rest of the songs may not have that pop song structure, but they’re still full of wonderful electronic elements that are perfectly layered that creates a cohesive atmosphere on the album. “Pieces of What” is my favorite of the non-singles from this album. I love that it starts off with just an acoustic guitar, but the song gets denser and more beautiful as it goes along, and the string arrangements at the end are fantastic. I got to see MGMT live back in 2010 when they were touring for Congratulations (Tame Impala opened for them), and if I could go back and relive any day from my life, that day is at the top of the list. Listening to this album today really deepened my love for MGMT, and I spent a lot of time listening to Loss of Life last year. If you like this album, I highly encourage you to check out Congratulations as well. These guys are musical geniuses, and this is easily one of the best albums of the 2000’s.
Rare to see an album with 3 generational hits. I love the lesser known rolling stonesy track "Pieces of What". Although I'm not a superfan of the washy sound, I think it's a great album and nowadays definitely underappreciated.
This is one of my all time favourite records. At the very least top 5. Outstanding from start to finish. I listen to it fairly often and it still sounds fresh all these years later. It’s also one of them records where as soon as I hear it I’m taken straight back to a different place (in this case, being tired and hungry on a park bench in Belgrade - funny how memory and nostalgia works). It’s well known for the massive hits off it which are class, but they do overshadow the other songs which imo are just as good if not better. The Handshake, Pieces of What, and The Youth are probably my 3 favourite songs off this. Psychedelic Pop perfection this.
perfection indie sleaze
It is incredibly hard to stay on the list as a post-2000 album. MGMT’s “Oracular Spectacular” is yet another victim, but I can think of few albums from that decade more worthy than this one. “Electric Feel” may have been inescapable, but it is embedded in the middle of an album with no weak songs from start to finish. It is described as neo-psychedelia, indietronica, and electronic rock, among other things, because it really defies boxes and definitions. Which really seemed to make it the epitome of 2000s indie rock. They never managed to repeat the success though. Too bad, but it doesn’t take away from what “Oracular Spectacular” achieved.
Remarkably consistent sound without every song sounding the same.
Kids is one of these songs that will never cease to make me happy
It‘s nearly too good. Nearly all Songs Hit material but this appeal breaks the album‘s neck towards the end.
Kids and electric feel are the best songs. I like the electronic vibes
The first 5 songs are unbelievable great. After that it slows down, but i still like each song a lot. I could see going 4 but I'm feeling generous.
Spectacular!
Very clever album
Absolutely GOATED album. Such a vibrant mix of genres and sounds and so many weird but catchy songs. So many standout tracks but have to mention ‘Of Moons, Birds and Monsters’ as they’ve somehow crammed like 5 songs in 5 mins with that one.
Best in whatever genre that was
really great intro song. sets the stage. Ive heard some tunes by them before, but not an album, and wasn't on the radar. Can see why after five tracks this is on the list. Start to finish not a weak one in the bunch. This is setting up to be my first "never heard of these guys but know a few tracks when I hear them" five stars. Kept it up throughout. This one is a keeper.
Special album for me. Very nostalgic so maybe I am biased, but this couldn't be anything but a 5 for me. It toes the line between experimental and pop bangers. 4th dimensional transition is like a pink floyd song. Of moons Birds and monsters is incredible. I love everything about it, and we haven't even gotten to time to pretend and kids, wow
The first time I heard MGMT song was at a party my older sister dragged me to. We were still in high school at the time (she a senior, I a freshman), and she wanted me to be cool and hangout with seniors and drink. Well, I was awkward as hell and really didn't know how to talk to strangers, let alone strangers I was trying to look cool in front of. So while I then (and now in hindsight for different reasons) appreciate my sister for volunteering to bring me along, I really was a fish out of water at the time. The one thing I have a vivid memory from that 2007 night though was hearing the strange, unique, intriguing, and in some ways haunting melody of "Kids" come on over the speaker one of the guys had brought with him. I was immediately drawn to its eerie synth melody, its simplicity, and how it made me feel. I didn't know what that feeling was in the that moment; I couldn't have been older than 15 at the time, and so had the emotional intelligence of a teenage boy that age. Looking back, I couldn't know what that feeling was because I hadn't lived long enough to experience it in a meaningful way - nostalgia. More specifically, a longing for the simplicity of childhood and a simpler life. So coming into this album, I was expecting a slate of songs similar in feeling and depth to "Kids." I got exactly that. I really enjoyed this album front to back. There were honest to god moments where it reminded me of The Beatles. Some of the arrangements and some of the sounds in general just sounded like Beatles-esque. They even had a song that sounded Indian-inspired. I really loved this album. It varied it energy, sound, attitude, and tone throughout. Some songs were heavier on the electronic sound, which is itself really unique. Maybe it's my limited knowledge of this genre, but I haven't heard anything else like this before or since. I liked that there were songs that were lighter on the electronic sounds and had some guitars and bass in there. A very happy five stars for this one. Very impressed. Would love to have another of theirs on this list. From what I remember, though, their peak was short lived, so we'll see. Standout Tracks: Time to Pretend, Weekend Wars, Electric Feel, Kids, Of Moons, Birds & Monsters, The Handshake, Future Reflections
Somehow I've never listened tl this whole album despite it coming out when I was in high school. Electric Feel and Kids were everywhere, and while great songs, they were severely overplayed which I guess led to me keeling the album at a distance. What a mistake that was, because this is seriously incredible. Every track is inventive and exploratory, reminding me a lot of the Bowie I've heard on this list. The chorus in The Youth is ghostly, and entralling, as is 4th Dimensional Transition. Of Moons, Birds & Monsters has some cool moments in the middle, but the last 2 mins of the song are special. This whole album is a vibe and truly stands out amongst its peers from the decade.
MGMT were the most formative band for me in my teenage years, not least because I covered a lot of their music in my old synth pop band. Easy to listen to, fun, straight forward bops.
This album is always been a great one to me. I loved it in college and I think it is aged really well. This album is a lesser known one on the list but to me this is a 5/5!
this album is so classic to me. this album is so good. this was released in the prime of my life.
I have a complicated history with this album. When I was a teenager I was visiting Germany and my mp3 player bricked. Since I didn’t have much spending money I could only grab a CD or two from a local store and this was one of my buys. I listened to this album quite a few times over the next few weeks. I fell in love with some of the more popular singles like “Time to Pretend” or “Kids”. I listened to them on repeat over and over. Eventually I learned how great “Electric Feel” was. And I’ve listened to these songs so much. Spotify has recommended these songs so much. In a way I’ve grown weary of them. Maybe it’s because I know I can’t be a teenager again. Coming back to this album was a nice trip down memory lane. I don’t think I’ll stop by again for some time, but I was happy to be there. This album really reminded me of finding my own taste in music, of discovering what the alt music of the time was like. I know there is bias in my ranking, but like I said, my relationship with this album is complicated.
Some classics on here
definitely the best
Yes yes
Damn nice!
From good to cult!
One of my favourite MGMT albums, I know it by heart. Not my favourite album ever, but I have to recognise the novelty
an album i always found to be very unique and overall great with some great songs i could listen to over and over. favs: honestly most of the album
Oracular Spectacular - MGMT , (Official Rating: 10/10) Posted on, “Album of the Year," "Rate Your Music" and “ MJ’s Album Reviews.” Official Ranking of the Year: 8/75 . Genre: Alternative Indie, Artist: MGMT Date: 11/13/24
This album came out when I was finally determining my own taste in music, separate from what my parents shared with me, and it really changed my whole music discovery journey for the better. So glad it still holds the hell up.
A classic I find myself consistently go back to
Fantastic. Time To Pretend, Electric Feel, Kids - what was college without these songs? Aged well too.
nostalgia
Very enjoyable
What a trip down memory lane. Grew up with this album. Love the heavy synthesisers on top of the pop rock happy go lucky sound. Beautiful lay arranged and curated. Felt happy and empowered by it
peak fifa days
Great album
az úgy volt, hogy elkezdődött az első szám és egy "whoooah" után lement kétszer az album. :D lowkey blaszfémnek érzem az ötöst, de annyival jobban élveztem mint a rengeteg négyest mostanában, hogy kinda have to. 😁
What a great album! If this is the only discovery I make from this 1001 album process, it will be worth it!
brought me back to when times were good. but also made me remember they were never really good.
It's an amazing album!
Didn’t realise how many of the tracks I knew, but didn’t know who they were by.
A formative album for me. But I still love the entirety of this. So many good grooves and melodies. A perfect experience. 5/5
Love this album love the band. Fave tune is The Youth. Good singalong tune. Like the 70’s feel.
This album was such a beautiful little surprise. I'd heard a number of the songs before in various contexts. And they've been kind of playing in the background for a long time, but to hear all of this material together, unraveling song after song, was simply a joy. Each song offered something different and diverse, and emotionally surprising, but also nostalgically refreshing. Maybe this is just a new relationship energy I'm experiencing with the album that will fade fairly quickly over time, but I found that each song's discovery was accompanied by a little electric excitement--kind of like when you slowly increase the intimacies with someone that you've had a distant crush on in the background for a long time... it's comfortable sunshine, it's fun, It gets in you.And you catch yourself humming to yourself throughout the day....
Bangers…….. it’s crazy how they actually invented indie rock
Sounding like a modern take on the fab 60s band The Electric Prunes, this amazing album starts strong with the upbeat, anthem-pop of 'Time to Pretend' followed by the quirky 'Weekend Wars', featuring some nifty chord changes and jangly guitar. 'The Youth' is spooky with more awesome chord changes, trippy sounds like organ, treated vocal and sound effects [the organ especially reminds me of Saucer Full of Secrets era Pink Floyd actually]. 'Kids' is instantly familiar with its killer keyboard riff and '4th Dimensional Transition' is more exotic, edgy pop-psych and 'Future Reflections' brings things to close with a spacey climax. On the downside, 'Pieces of What' could have benefited from a another take on the vocals. Nevertheless, this is a very cool sounding neo-psychedelic record, chock full of oddball yet catchy songs, exuberant vocals and experimental spacey electronic effects. Another one to add to my vinyl wants list!
Love this album already, I know it was ironic but still ended up being one of my favourites ones
LOVE
This album is just about as perfect as it gets. I've listened to it probably a hundred times but never mind listening again. There's something nostalgic about it with thick synths and unexpected melodies. It just sounds so cool and thick. Highly recommended album.
Excellent. Classic. Always good.
Really enjoyed this
This album was recorded over a decade and a half ago now, and although it sounds very of its era, there’s something perpetually new and fresh about it. I’ve heard the singles from this album a million times, but they never get old. Perhaps it’s the liquid youth that emanates from these songs. The lost boy vibe of never wanting to grow up maybe froze time itself within its wax. Or maybe, I hate to say it, music simply hasn’t evolved as dramatically as say it did in the fifteen year gap between 1969 and 1984, so it feels newer in relation to everything else that’s come out since. Thank you Spotify algorithmic market research! The second half of this album is weaker than the first, but those first five songs are a powerhouse. 5 stars, and I’d give five more.
While Oracular Spectacular isn’t my favorite MGMT album—that would be Little Dark Age—it remains a standout release from the inventive duo. MGMT was a key player in what felt like a mini indie psych renaissance from 2006 to 2012, alongside bands like Animal Collective, Of Montreal, Grizzly Bear, Neon Indian, Wolf Parade, and TV on the Radio, all of which frequently graced my playlists during that creative period. The album brims with youthful revelations and existential musings, offering psychedelic insights into a world of cosmic possibilities, though sometimes wrapped in abstract encoding. Whether it’s profound or just playful, it’s packed with vibrant, danceable tracks that invite both movement and mental exploration. Andrew and Ben excel at making these songs feel as though they were crafted by a full band rather than just two multi-instrumentalists. They achieve this through skillful layering, well-thought-out transitions, and engaging song structures. This intuitive approach is reminiscent of solo artist Kevin Parker (aka Tame Impala), whose albums should also be on this list. Revisiting this mind-bending debut inspired me to check out a few more of their albums, including their latest release. I’m pleased to see MGMT continue to create and share their art.
This album deserves all of the acclaim it gets. An amazing mix of electro-pop, dance, rock, and plenty of psychedelia, Oracular Spectacular is a sonic wall of intricate musical ideas which alone hold water but becomes a tour-de-force when alongside such innovative and catchy songwriting. "Time To Pretend" both mocks and aspires to the excessive lifestyle we've come to accept from glamour rockstars, and they come off as rockers seasoned in such hedonism instead of a new band putting out a debut album. But the consistent message I get from MGMT is that the kids are gonna be alright. "The Youth" passes the torch to the younger generation, offering encouragement and confidence that they are ready to take the helm: "The Youth are starting to change." And "Kids" reminds them to be responsible with their power: "Control yourself/ Take only what you need from it." "Pieces of What" doubts that there is much value to civilizations' traditions, that the youth inherited a mess and sadly, they may be better off starting over, leading with love. And it's one hell of song to belt out full voice after a couple of drinks. "Electric Feel" accomplishes an impressive task of making 3/4 feel like a danceable 4/4, impossibly remaining fully accessible to ravers and radio listeners who may not be aware of the technical complexity that is happening here. It grooves so well, and it shouldn't. Completely unique. Some of the latter songs meander in their psychedelia a bit, but there is always a melodic payout. Too much of this whimsy (like on their follow up Congratulations), and the album would blur into formless soundscapes, but in this context it offers more variety to what else is happening. I would be remiss to neglect mentioning the genius of Dave Fridmann's production on this album. I became a fan of the cleanliness and spaciousness of his productions (regardless that his clients often give him such challenging noise and bombast) since he first started working with The Flaming Lips. His expertise shines through once again on this album, which often has so many elements going on that in other hands, it would be muddy and dull. As it is, this album sounds forever fresh and exciting.
What an amazing album. Some song more simple, others with more complex layers. I love this album a lot. Electric Feel into Kids is amazing.
this is my SHIT
Liked this a lot. Did the rounds back in the day but missed me. Those two tunes were attached to every indie film of the 2010’s. Will add to library.
Bom demais e melhora a cada faixa
I went to this thinking I only knew 1 song (Electric Feel) and completely did not realize I knew "Time To Pretend" and "Kids". I've heard both a million times but not known who they were by or the names of the songs. I really enjoyed this album. It gives me big nostalgia for my late teens/early 20s. I think it's a great pick to capture a certain sound from a certain era. I ended up really loving a lot of the other songs too! I think I have to give it the extra star for the nostalgia vibes, and for the other groups it inspired down the line.
Time to Pretend, Kids, Pieces of What, un 5 en toda regla.
Good
Fantastic album - no notes
Ground-breaking emotional gothic and dramatic. This thing shaped so much music and theres so much emotion put into this. Best of all, its so serious in its weirdness. The album cover captures it perfectly. They're saying, "Yeah it's fun, but its deadly serious, it's silly, but its not a joke". MGMT has a commitment to making abstract and emotional music and never apologizes for it or tries to justify it. This is a rock solid musical statement and it deserves all the praise.
This is one of my go-to albums for a nice day. Every song is a banger.
Fun album with a fantastic diversity of tracks. A little bored on some of them, but overall, I love this album
This is an easy 4,5 I'll give it 5 stars
When this came out it changed my world. There are for sure weak songs on this, and the sound isn't for everyone. But it's for me!! Plus I think a good chunk of the albums on here are "you gotta listen" as someone's favs/vanity project so I don't mind rating one higher when it suits me
lovely
Art pop brilliance.
I was a 16 year old little hipster when this album came out, so obviously I was obsessed with it. This is one of those time capsule albums for me. Hearing it just immediately takes me back to that time of my life, driving around with my friends in my used Volkswagen Jetta that was given the name "Caca Dart" by my dad because it was a piece of shit. I'd love to know how many times this CD played in good ol' Caca Dart. Time to Pretend, Electric Feel, and Kids are all undeniable bops, but I also think Weekend Wars, The Youth, and The Handshake are unsung heroes on this album. I would be really interested to know how I would receive this if I was hearing it for the first time today. Alas, I am human, and cannot deny the nostalgia that oozes off this album for me, so it's a 5.
Listened to it last time. Banger album
A lot of old times Classics of psychedelic and eletronic Rock, e.g. "Time to pretend". I will relisten.
This albums had marked my adolescence
This is a great album that was not followed by similar greatness. I don't know what happened to MGMT. 5/5
Great listeb
This album is practically the soundtrack to a specific part of my life. It's a bit of a bummer the band thought of it as their sellout album. Absolutely love it, even the more out there tracks.
Perfection! 2 of my favourite songs of all time on here and the rest is dope
How would I describe this... psychedelic electro rock. Either way, I like it!
An indie delight. Maybe because it’s tied up with my childhood and early teenage years but I don’t think there’s a track I don’t like.
relisten. this album perfectly captures the coming of age experience. it meat to me a lot when i was a teenagers saying goodbye to my childhood and it means a lot to me now that im still new to being an independent adult and miss my carefree years. the music and lyrics cover everything related to growing up and leaving home. the nostalgia, the desire to experience new things and decide for yourself, the freedom, the fear of what the future might bring, not wanting to come back but remembering when you're from, not recognizing the place you once called home anymore, the community, the loneliness. I absolutely love the way they introduced some post apocalyptic themes to it all because they fit the concept of the album perfectly. The last line of Future Reflections that also happens to be the last line of the album hold a special place in my heart. "There's a sea outside my door and one day I'll appreciate the rush of blood and the washed out beat of the shore and remember what it felt like to be alone." MGMT is a very important band to me. I think all of their other albums are as worth giving a listen as this one. Even though they are all completely different, i could never mistake them for anything else. They truly mastered their own unique sound and know exactly what to do with it without repeating themselves.
Green Team Xtreme
A desert island album!
Nice. I stand corrected. As a Gen X fart, I allow myself to not be super interested in whatever reaches radio play popularity among the Y&Z generations and so had only cursory knowledge of MGMT. Was only a few months ago that I decided to like 'Kids' and I had equaled this band to what they sound like on 'Electric Feel'. Eclectic Dirty Disco with BeeGees voices. A designed product, nicely suited to sell lifestyle products with. Instead I found drugged up psychedelic Glitter Rock! Very pleasant surprise. "Of Moons, Birds & Monsters" will probably get upwards of 17 plays today.
great vibes.
Way better than I expected - all three songs I already knew (Kids, Time To Pretend, Electric Feel) were of course bangers, but because that time period, and this band, is so intrinsically linked to my teenage years, I wasn't sure if it would feel as dated as moustache finger tattoos. It actually didn't at all! The Youth, The Handshake, Pieces of What were all fun new finds. Will dive into more! 4.5* ranked up to 5*
The Rosetta Stone of modern electric music.
"Oracular Spectacular" is a great album and "Time to Pretend" is just such a great song that kicks off the album with their tongue-in-cheek accounting of the rock star. I like how the song just outlines matter-of-factly they will become famous, get married to models, become hooked on drugs, have kids, meet more models and then die. What makes the song even better is the keyboard riff, which is so obviously good it makes me wonder how no other band had used it before. MGMT never was able to meet these heights, though their later catalogue does have some really good individual tracks, nothing matches what's on this one. There is some criticism the latter half of the album is light on good songs, but "Pieces of What" and "The Handshake" are both really good songs. I would recommend this album and it deserves a place in this book because it is pure synth-pop done very well.
Time to Pretend, Kids, Pieces of What, un 5 en toda regla.
This album had a massive influence on the music I listened to when I was in high school. Despite what MGMT has to say about this album, I still think it's incredible. "The Youth," "Pieces of What," and "Weekend Wars" are some of my favourite MGMT tracks. "Time to Pretend" is where it all started for me though. Years later and I'm still coming back to this album.
When I was a senior in high school my best friends and I got green out high and locked ourselves in a beach house bathroom after prom. We put this album on and when it ended we were all so high we could have sworn that we all heard a “secret” track at the end of the album. As a kid, I never felt closer to anyone else in my life at the time. There’s some music you just can’t separate some of your best teen memories. This album is that for me. Hard 5.
Time to Pretend Electric Feel Kids
5/5
The Singles are three of the best pop songs of its time, the rest is a weird, trippy scifo spectacular. classic album.
I think this is the first album we’ve gotten that I’ve listened to in it’s entirety before having it as the album for the day.. I like some of the songs a lot, the most r just fine, based on the songs I like more and ig just in agreement of spot on this list 9/10
Prty good, first half of the album goes hard, falls off a bit on the back end 9/10
I mean I might be biased but I love this album, brings back a lot of nostalgia. Enjoy the overall feel and theme of it, the slight electronic beat with great vocals
un rêve de mes 12 ans
Major nostalgia from this one, instant 5/5. Favorite track: The Youth
Very nostalgic
Bangers
There are some awesome songs on this album and I really like their style.
Yeah, it's overwhelming, but what else can we do? Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?
I absolutely love this album. I remember the 3 big singles that came out and being mesmerized by all of them at the time. I never listened to the entire album until now, and that was also a wonderful experience. Some really awesome soundscapes and noises that just contribute to the overall experience. Something completely weird and different! Favorite tracks: all of them!
I don't like the overall sound of most of these songs - sounds like the tracks are (purposefully) over compressed to the point of clipping. And the nasally pinched vocals aren't anything to crow about. And yet, I love this album. The songs are so so so good. Great melodic hooks behind every corner. The arrangements / instrumentations are really interesting and diverse. The album is anything but monotonous. Coming back to the sound - I'm wondering if they employed that particular effect in order to differentiate themselves from the hordes. I wish I could say with confidence that the great songs and production were enough to do that. But there are a lot of great albums that go completely unnoticed. So maybe it worked. That said, how interesting would it be to hear a "remix" without that over compression?
Yes
Oracular? Spectacular 5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
Every song on this album feels so familiar. Even the ones I'm certain I've never heard before. It is an easy listen front to back. Chill without being boring. Loved it.
Great album. Listened 3 times. Reminded me of the rolling stones
Love this album. Electric Feel is a phenomenal song.
Didn’t need to listen because I’ve heard it dozens of times and love it
A very fun album
Such a feel good album, banger after banger.
This album has weirdly always felt nostalgic and I'm not sure why, but I love it.
Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Time to pretend, Weekend wars, The youth, Electric feel, Kids, Of moons birds and monsters
A standout darling that shattered the divide between indie and mainstream. The perfection behind this specific craft alienated the group to take one of the hardest left turns towards expectations for a career still redefining expectations to this day.
Takes clear influence from Bowie. This album has depth, complexity, and experimentation. Was a blast to get lost in it.
I really like discovering music from my era that I genuinely enjoy. My contrarian nature was great for forming very strong opinions and relationships with older music I still love to this day, but I was way too hardline against modern music at the same time. This is fantastic art, and I will certainly keep MGMT in my rotation. Favorite track: Of Moons, Birds & Monsters
First half is better than the second half, but Electric Feel into Kids is one of my favorite one-two punches ever
own
Love MGMT and already know and love several of the songs on this album, Time To Pretend, Electric Feel and most of all Kids - the song that introduced me to MGMT. It was great to hear the whole of this album, definitely keeping it in my Spotify library.
This album crushes it, an absolutely perfect first side that makes you want to dance your ass off!
An absolute stunner of a debut album. One of those records that is released every so often that blows out the cobwebs on the music scene, rearranges what is possible and, afterwards nothing is the same for a while.
Crazy how well this album has aged. Great listen, you can definetly see how they influenced a lot of todays music
замечательный, очень близкий и разнообразный! очень понравился, точно буду слушать ещё целиком в ближайшее время
LOVE IT!!!!
One of my all time favorite albums… can’t say enough!
KIDS!!!!!! ELECTRIC FEEL!! This is party music. Shock me like an electric eel
A nice surprise. Always vitalizing Diré Straits
•Owned •The impending doom of adulthood—even with the coming wars, deteriorating landscape, more or less hinted at—is the backdrop for getting together biblically before it all happens. A danceable singalong for all, regardless of what you partake in that night, or even remain clear headed. Don’t sell out for anything else. •4.5/5
As a freshman in college in 2008, this album was blasting constantly from my shitty laptop speakers in my dorm room. Still holds up. 4.5/5
Absolutely amazing
Back to back nostalgia albums is nice. Although this is one is a bit more recent for me, it’s hard not to eventually get nostalgic for kids and electric feel when it’s played at every high school and college event. Even though this album is basically a shitpost about pop music it continues to blow most pop music out of the water. In addition to time to pretend and the youth, this also has stronger non-hit tracks that make it a better 5/5 album than American idiot
Old favorite—not new to me but always good to listen to!
верните нулевые!
Так жаль, что людям нужны простые песни. Эх... там вторая половина альбома такая шедевральная, просто чума! Но ничего, своих слушателей, любителей нео-психодела и индитроники, они нашли.
Genius composition and melodies. Added many songs from this album to my Playlist. Nice discovery
Love it
This is another one I find hard to view objectively, because I was 17 when it came out, and listened to it obsessively that summer. That summer was incidentally one of the best of my life so far, and listening to this album through again took me back to those carefree days. One thing that always sticks out was going to my first music festival with friends, and being very hyped to see MGMT. I wasn't the only one; they had been booked to a relatively small stage and the tent was overflowing with people like myself. About halfway through the set, during a slower song I looked up and saw a (presumably intoxicated) person climbing up one of the support towers of the tent, which I was standing quite close to. Maybe like 80-100 metres up. I found it funny at first, but the higher they got the more worried I was that they would fall, probably on top of me. Pretty soon half of the crowd had turned away from the stage and more people started climbing. The band had to stop playing and plead with people to get down, eventually leaving the stage. I think the crowd started to boo the climbers then, and they finally came down. MGMT then returned to the stage and played all the hits off the album in quick succession to get the crowd back onside. Personal anecdotes aside, I do think this is a very important album generally. It is peak 2000s era electro-pop - check out the Justice remix of Electric Feel if you want more evidence of this - and led yo quite a few imitators. The weirder psych rock songs on here make a lot more sense now, having heard MGMT's later work. Overall, well worth a listen, as some of the deeper cuts on here hold up.
Really great
A perfect album. First half is a cool indie pop epic and once it gets to 4th dimensional transition the album goes off into wild psychedelia. . A perfect record in my opinion.
Always have loved MGMT
I think "Oracular Spectacular" is a modern classic, and it's amazing it came from two young Connecticut boys on their first album...and that they haven't been able to create anything equally amazing. I wouldn't necessarily want them to do the same thing, but it's obvious they've had to run from the initial fame and success, and I just hope they can eventually circle around to something else that is as good. This album, though, is catchy, but it has some deep meanings hidden inside. The arrangements can be rather complex while letting the main melodies sit on top. They obviously had a great producer, but the bones of the songs are, themselves, so solid.
Nostalgic classic for me. Love it
very nostalgic, love it
Yes.
Super fun and groovy with intricate backings. Lots of great songs. Easy 5
I mean, this is on of the easiest 5/5 on this list. Great band, magnificent album, but I am pretty confused about the placement. Is it really that good, is it justifiably on this list? I don't feel like it's a modern breakthrough, it's not a start of a new genre, it's just a really, really solid album. Nevertheless, great music, it goes quite high on my "Vinyls To Buy Next" list.
Ah yes, the cornerstone of 00's indie electronica. Love it.
I didn't think I would like it this much. Well, here we are. A blend of different sounds and simplistic yet relaxing bass lines.
remember control yourself take only what you need from it a family of trees wanted to be haunted
Great Album,so many bangers, the vibes of this album are infectious.
Pleasantly surprised by this album.
Album makes me feel like I'm a main character in a early 2010's indie film.
Love this album, side 1 stacked with hits, side 2 supremely underrated.
Fantastic album. Unique sound, catchy hooks, great formulas, strange time signatures, musically complex, etc. Still easy to digest though. First album I've listened to on here that deserves 5 stars. I am genuinely excited to listen to more of this band. Although I have heard the big hits like Kids and Electric Feel, the other songs were a delight to listen to as well.
Have listened to it probably 50 times and still love it every time. 4.25 or higher? Banger after banger, no skips
Mmmyeahhhh
EVERY.SONG.FUCKING.SLAPS
Bangers
pretty funky in a good way
One of my personal favorites. Love its exposure and usage in popular movies.
Brilliant every time.
What a banger! Listen to again
Great album throughout. Highly listenable on first pass. Some song aspects remind me of Glass Animals in the use of layering with unique sounds.
I've always loved this album. Took me back 15 years and loved it again.
Reminds me of college. As good as I remember. Great album
Great album. Good tunes. Love the feel of the different tracks.
An unexpected treat. When MGMT were new on the scene, I'd somewhat dismissed them for just having a few catchy singles and never paid the album much attention. That was a mistake. Whilst having the aforementioned singles, there's a lot more going on in this album. A kind of faux-pop which deviates into spacey and Bowie-inspired tracks. Absolutely excellent.
Love this album, classic!
heard it
Great album from top to bottom
These two decided to make pop music as a joke and casually made one of the greatest albums of all time. Modern hit factory.
It’s really easy to dismiss this album for being overrated or overplayed. But going through it for the first time in a long time today, I gotta say, there’s not a bad track in the bunch here. This is a pretty incredible debut regardless of what you think of the band. The ability to spit out this many hits on your first record is wild. And from what I know of this band, they started as a joke band. These songs were meant to be dumb parodies of over saturated pop music of the time. Funny how that happens. It’s rare to have a record where you have at least two songs that virtually everyone on earth knows.
Irreverent, sometimes silly, but musically sophisticated. I like the layered sound a lot and i am reminded of Roxy Music and Radiohead.
True millennial-core This was among the last albums I bought when they came out on CD even though I had an iPod for a few years. Kids especially is in the top 10 of the decade.
So so good
I love seeing electro albums from 2000s on here, I have such a vivid memory from this period. I played this particular album so much, and the first few cords are instantly recognizable. And each song after the other. This was when I really loved finding and discovering new music. I haven't listened to this in a long time, but it feels like home.
Time to Pretend, Kids, Pieces of What, un 5 en toda regla.
I love this album
Day 1: Oracular Spectacular-MGMT (2007) - Psychedelic/Electronic - Favorite track: Kids - Reminds me of Flaming Lips - Very atmospheric, relying more on synthesizers - Classic rock influence, Pink Floyd? - Great production, interesting, catchy melodies. Not what I usually listen to, but great start to this challenge. 4.8/5
I love every second of this album. Possibly a soft spot for the first concert I went to but honestly- time to pretend > Weekend wars > the youth is a spectacular 3 track run for an album opening and up there with the best of them. And then bam - the hits - electric feel and kids. Chefs kiss. Back end of the album is definitely less punchy and less widely loved but The Handshake is absolutely cracking and future reflections is a groovy tune. Honestly. So good.
Classic album of 2010’s!
2007 - Pop Rock; Psychedelic Rock; Synth-pop
Great
This album shaped my college years and is still very enjoyable. Good listen from start to finish and a defining album of the late 2000s.
So happy to see this album on the list, absolute banger, brings me back to high school.
Killer singles line up and an album that backs it up. The production is so cool, and the dreamy catchy vocals stick in your mind. Kids in particular is such an earworm. Great album.
Fantastic
Great hits like 'electric feel', all-time favorite, and some other perfect songs like 'kids'. overall all good songs too!
In Austria this album wasn't overplayed. Just know it from TikTok etc. but this one is a gem. Truly Hit after Hit, and the fillers are just also so great. No skipper.
This is perfect 🤩
Era-defining, even outside of the hits.
Great album
A personal classic that I consider perfect from start to finish. It's an album I can easily totally jump in. The psychedelic, eclectic, electro, pop and introspective sound is perfect. So many great and well produced songs. The Youth, Piece Of What and Of Moons, Birds & Monsters are especially powerful.
life changing
One of the best albums oat... Also one of the first albums that kinda got me away from pop music and edm at like 12 years old Of Moons is still one of the best pieces of music ever made
Love love love it. Not just for the hits but the entire album.
a lot of nastalgia listening to this one. Some great hits and a very specific sound from the 2000’s
God, I love the way those drums come in at the beginning of “Time To Pretend.” That moment jump-starts a killer song and an awesome album. MGMT are one of my favorite bands and one of the best and most interesting acts making music today. This album is heavily tied to college in my memories. "Time to Pretend" and "Electric Feel" were huge songs that were everywhere for a while. They were crossover hits that everyone could agree on -- the indie music nerds, the frat guys, your mom when you played it in the car. This was definitely an album I played in my dorm and heard at parties. I have a distinct memory of dancing to "Kids" with some friends at a house party. But man, it really holds up. The whole first half is fantastic and includes the three hits I've already mentioned. "Weekend Wars" is an anthem and I like how the rhythm changes back and forth. MGMT are very good at composing songs with surprising twists and turns. And "The Youth" has that great singalong, chanted refrain. The first half of the album is all big hooks and stadium-sized synth pop, while the second half gets more psychedelic and weird. But there's still plenty of catchy melodies too. "Pieces of What" is a nice, mellow number. And "Of Moons, Birds & Monsters" is great psychedelic rock (and again, lots of little twists and turns and surprises that keep you on your toes but feel totally natural after you've heard the song a few times). One of the things that always grabs me about this album is its emotion. There are a lot of lyrics about childhood that resonate with me. And for all the psychedelic production effects (the bubbles and warbles and reverb), the emotion is front and center, which makes the album more accessible than you might expect for this genre. It's one of the best debut albums in recent memory and a classic in my book. (And they even managed to top it on their second album "Congratulations," which is one of my absolute favorites. Not sure if that one is going to be on this list or not but it's a masterpiece and definitely on my personal best albums list.)
if only the first half of this existed it’d still be one of the best albums of the 2000s. Fortunately for us the back half is also fantastic. I don’t think there’s a single person between 18 and 35 who doesn’t have a core memory to at least one of the songs on here. best tracks: time to pretend, 4th dimensional transition, kids
ACTUALLY SAM ZNALA TKO SU OPOP Dobar
Still good
Dit is altijd mijn definitie van indie geweest, terwijl dit eigenlijk ver boven de ander indie zit die hier voorbij kwam. Tijdens mijn middelbare schooltijd veel geluisterd, dus sweet memories albumpje, 5 sterren
Excellent. So many catchy songs.
I really love this album quite a lot. I knew several songs coming in but I like several others as well. The songs that I like on this album I absolutely adore!
Electric feel took me back to when I was a teenager again. This era of music was all about feel good and party all night songs. Kids makes me feel reminiscent of when I was young and trying to figure my life out.
Good, spotify album radio station is very good. Lots of chill rock
What a throwback !
Starts strong with wonderful anchors. But the real treasure is in the last three tracks, elevating this from popular ear candy to something ethereal and wonderful.
I love MGMT
Buiten de hitjes ook een super album.
Man crazy to think this album came out 15 years ago. I remember watching snowboarding videos with kids playing in the background and thinking I've never heard something like this before. Psych electro? idk if it can be defined in a genre but MGMT is one of those generational bands that defines an era of music. A classic
I don't give 5 stars to a band I know nothing about. Correction. I hadn't given 5 stars to an unknown band until now. Other than Kids I'd never heard any of this album but I'm adding them to my deep dive playlist. So much variety, so many influences, so catchy.
Wow
Outstanding, I remember my first listen and this second time i am more used to the sound and its very enjoyable
Jesus 2007. 16 years ago? Really? I loved the 3 singles on here but remember being disappointed with the rest of the album. To be fair, I love those 3 singles so much that the rest just had to not suck to get five stars and it’s done enough for that. 16 years, fuck…
Its the perfect pop album
Love it. But can't figure out which Mates of State song they sampled.
Fabulous, different, memorable - got to round it up to a 5 as it one of few albums I could finish listening to and want to start again straight away
Great from start to finish.
Today I’m listening to an album I’m somewhat familiar with. It was only a few months ago that I listened to this album from front to back, as my partner is a fan of MGMT. Still, I’m excited to listen again with some fresh ears! Songs I already knew: all of them to some degree Favourites: Electric Feel, Kids As expected, I enjoyed this album a lot. There is a great use of synth throughout, as well as excellent vocals. I’ve always found MGMT vocals to be quite androgynous, and therefore somewhat unique. Every song is a rump shaker, and generally has deep lyrics that are easy to miss on the first few listens. Overall, a very easy album to recommend.
Stunning, stunning debut album. An album that feels like it set the tone for an age. A great case of an album that I was super familiar with in high school— I probably played it a few dozen times while driving around— but a retrospective listen only caused me to love to album more. The first half of the album (up to Kids) is just immediately iconic… but the production was what caught my ear! 15 years later and I’m like… something about this sounds so Flaming Lips. And sure enough, it’s Lord High Wizard Dave Fridmann on production! An amazing combo. I feel like listening to this album deeply got me a masterclass in dynamic, full, quirky, Phil Spektor-y wall-of-sound gushiness. I don’t know much about the background on the making of this album, but it sounds like a perfect pairing to me, between the silly, irreverent lyrics and the Phil Spektor-y symphonic sound. I loved it all the way through. I got so many ideas from just listening to the instrumentation. For a debut album? Nothing less than a perfect first ball.
Oracular Spectacular, the debut album by MGMT, is a true masterpiece of psychedelic pop. From start to finish, the album is a journey through a whimsical world of catchy melodies, dreamy harmonies, and thought-provoking lyrics. Each track on the album showcases the band's unique musicality, blending elements of indie rock, electronic, and retro-futuristic sounds to create a sound that is both nostalgic and refreshingly new. The opening track, "Time to Pretend," sets the tone for the album with its infectious chorus and dreamy synth lines, while "Electric Feel" is sure to get you dancing with its upbeat tempo and groovy basslines. It's worthy to mention that Beck song Dreams sounds a lot like Electric Feel from this album, making it clear the influence it had on other musicians. Overall, Oracular Spectacular is an absolute must-listen for fans of psychedelic pop and anyone looking for something fresh and exciting in their music collection.
Love it :) very distinctive sound; need to be in the right mood
10/10 I grew up with a couple of these songs since my mom has been a fan since this album first came out maybe my nostalgia had me give this album too high of a rating, but I still think this album sounds fantastic years later also I’m a huge fan of psychedelic electronic music and the second half of this album really delivers that the first half is just iconic pop, still amazing tho
An instant album classic
MGMT, what can I say. This album really opened my eyes up to what music could be, at a time where I was basically an "emo kid". The neo-psychedelia/indie production coupled with Andrew's ethereal vocals came at the perfect time and was the perfect album to begin to expand what I thought music was. With their kooky look, and really freaking crazy music videos it was just what my weirdo teen brain needed. Best: Time To Pretend; Electric Feel Worst: 4th Dimensional Transition
WoW WoW WoW !!!
Grosse madeleine de Pagnol là.....
Love it
There’s a review of Spring Breakers that I really like, where the reviewer points out that it’s a movie that makes more sense now, in hindsight, because instead of getting Harmony Korine’s hot takes on America’s youth, you get a dead-on time capsule of a very specific time & place--a zeitgest, over now, that at the time didn’t seem aware of its own mortality. I was thinking a lot about that when listening to Oracular Spectacular; I was actually pretty shocked to see it’s as old as 2007, because the era I vividly remember it from was 2011-2013 aka my college years aka a time when the hits from this were ubiquitous instead of showing their age. It’s another one of those where exactly half the songs on here got way too much exposure, while the other half you’ve never heard in your fucking life. Most of the unknowns were actually pretty fun, with the exception of “Youth” which was so awful it single-handedly knocks the whole thing down a rung of my esteem. Fun trip down memory lane!
Legendarisk album, topp 5 på 00-tallet! Bang, bang, banger! Herlig start på uka, en mørk og kaldt mandags morgen i november. dette er lyden av min ungdomstid og jeg er stolt over den tida
Brilliant
Great fun album.
Quintessential mid-2000s listening.
Time to Pretend, Kids, Pieces of What, un 5 en toda regla.
So today I had Oracular Spectacular, the album with "Electric Feel" and "Kids" on it. And lemme tell you, "the album with 'Electric Feel' and 'Kids' on it" is a REALLY appropriate description. That said, those two songs are so damn good and the rest of the album is certainly fine, so this is the best album I've listened to on here in a couple weeks at least. Having just checked my history, the last thing I listened to that was really better than this was Van Halen 1.
One of my favorite bands & albums of the time. Modern psychedelic with touches of synth & funk.
This album is very enjoyable. The lyrics are powerful in their own right, and the high-pitched singing works extremely well with the upbeat instrumentals. 9/10
Time to Pretend, Kids, Pieces of What, un 5 en toda regla.
JA!
pref: 4th dimensionnal transition
Good lyrics, interesting tunes. A staple album filled with psychedelic notes of self exploration.
Undoubtedly inspirational and paved the way for new wave psychedelic rock. Every song is a listen.
Heavy Frontload on this one right here, but the frontload is so strong. I mean, for a solid 5 years at least this was the indie rock sound.
I may be partial, but this album rocks.
Ovaj album mi je SPEKTAKULARAN od kak je izaso
good elbum
One of those albums that is fun and fresh even after years of listening to it
Love MGMT! Great album!
Perfeito!
The album reminded me of Jefferson airplane and psychedelic music with a modern twist.
A really fantastic surprise. I had no idea what to expect from this album. I loved how varied it was. From jazzy, Bill Wurtz-esque tracks to more traditional hip hop this album has it all and does it all impeccably.
I’m so glad MGMT is here! I bought this album when it came out and felt like I was listening to the future. It still has that feel to me today. It was the brilliant song "Kids" that brought me to this album initially. But it was "Time To Pretend" made me realize this was something very special. The glitter-grunge feel was so unique, the lyrics so interesting. This remarkable debut album continues with a strongly cohesive sound but each song has its own style and special touches. If I needed an example of "groovy" from the 21st century, Oracular Spectacular would be a perfect choice.
I've listened to this album extensively and love it beginning to end. Obviously electric feel and kids are standouts.
Loved this album - really groovy and plenty of great hits. "Time to Pretend", "Electric Feel", "Kids" are all great. 8/10.
Great album. One of my favorites
4.5
J’aime beaucoup cet album. La fiin des années 2000 est importante selon moi. Elle marque un certain bouillonnement et un rajeunissement du rock. Cet album en est un bon exemple. Il a influencé bon nombre d’autres artistes comme Galaxie par exemple.
I have spent sooo much time with this album
Yeah, rocking eletronic power pop. Great album, faves Time to Pretend, The Youth, Kids.
phenomenal. great listen when you want to feel relaxed and cool.
I haven’t listened to this whole album before but have heard about it. It did not disappoint. Great album for such a weird and out there sound.
On paper, I shouldn't like MGMT. It's electronic indie-pop. But MGMT manage to avoid all of the pitfalls of their peers by creating compelling rhythms and melodies accompanied by fun and surprisingly coherent lyrics. This whole album was just a jam. Each successive track built a mood that I found compelling. By the end, I was involuntarily tapping my feet and bobbing my head. It's a great album.
Still a great album. Time to Pretend and Electric Feel are my favourite tracks.
This album is perfect. Absolutely one of the best albums of the 00s.
Mama mia
Time to Pretend, Electric Feel i Kids przesuper, generalnie bardzo spoko album, chyba jedyny utwor ktory srednio mi sie podobal to of moons, birds & monsters.
I love this so much!
already have it!
This album has some of my favourite singles of all time and the album tracks are way better than they're usually given credit for.
Of Moons, Birds & Monsters and Time to Pretend are the best songs of all time. The production is intricate and I'm so proud of the accomplishments being that this album was made 2006-2008.
Weird. Messy. And most importantly, mind-blowing. These experiences are why I signed up for this project. This is a unique, unusual, and beautiful discovery for me. It's not easy to describe its sound, but I think the cover art tells a lot about it. Two seemingly hipster men on a beach, which is painted in a vibrant scheme of blue and purple. That perfectly sums up the album. It's hipster-ish, as some less enthusiastic people put it, yet it's oddly moving. It was like walking along a surreal beach built by those synth (?) riffs. It was like musical psychedelic trip, with a nice uplifting build-up. What happened to this type of music when artists like LANY and The Chainsmokers brought it to the mainstream in early 2010's? Whatever, I'm still glad that I discovered this gem. It might not be one of the best pop albums of the recent times, but it sure is the most mood elevating album that I have ever heard so far.
College nostalgia dictates that I give this 5 stars. But really there are some great songs on here. Electric Feel has been in my brain for 15 years
Never listened to this whole thing, find it very engaging
Yes and also yes
Awesome album! Much more depth than I was expecting.
Groovy
Great album! Love me some MGMT!
Awesome album. They have such a cool sound, unique music!
A familiar start that took me back to being a teenager, still a fantastic album after all these years.
I am super impressed. I remember the hits from high school, but the album as a whole is great work in this genre. Great melodies, catchy synth parts, varying rhythms. Great work! An example for Indie!
Nostalgic stuff right here
This is a fantastic album. When I saw it I wondered whether my love of it was just nostalgia for the time but it is genuinely a great album. I remember when it came out it felt so cool and different to a lot of other stuff and the whole aesthetic of it felt so fresh.
Great record
One of my favorite albums of all time, every track is a hit. Still holds up. First time listening in probably 10 years.
