Good one

I obviously know mgmt from the 3 singles on this album, but knew surprisingly little outside of that. I was pleasantly surprised with how good the other tracks were too. This is probably the first album on this that I could see myself adding to my day to day listening. Favorite songs: time to pretend, kids, of moons, birds, and monsters

One of the greatest produced music here. This is one of the best musically easy to listen for everyone and i respect that!

5/5 - Reflective of a time in oughts music and sentiments. Those were the days. It has the hits, but the album cuts are almost uniformly great too. Feels like a Flaming Lips album, but taken to the next level. And Time to Pretend is, of course, an all-time banger.

When I saw this was my album for the day i did not have high expectations. But this album is now one of my favorites introduced by this website. Favorite song: Time To Pretend

Time to Pretend, Kids, and Electric Feel ate overplayed af; I don't really ever need to heat them again, so this listen was mostly to hear the rest of the album which I hadn't listened to since the 00's. I think the other songs hold up. It's not my favorite MGMT album, but it's pretty fucking good

Definitely standing on the shoulders of giants. It’s at times a little Bowie, T Rex and Flaming Lips. A great mix of undeniable pop hits and psychedelic tunes.

I SAID OHHH GIRLLL

Time to Pretend, Electric Feel… all popular for good reason. This album had multiple hits

Haven't listened to this for a long time, and it's better than I remembered. Only a couple of weak tracks, and consistently interesting. Lyrics aren't necessarily a strong point but I was impressed by the quality of Time to Pretend and the boldness of making fun of a rick star lifestyle they were yet to achieve (perhaps unsurprisingly at least one of them has dated a number of models). A fun listen and one of relatively few examples where the list manages to identify an album from the last 10-20 years that actually holds up

this album feels like pure nostalgia and freedom

The melody in the song “Kids” makes me feel emotions that I have absolutely no idea how to put into words. It’s beyond just a synthy-pop song, but again I have to way to reasonably articulate my feelings on it into words. It might be my millennial bias showing through, but this song alone puts this album at 5* for me. I know the rest of the album fairly well, and I think it would be surprisingly dynamic to someone who only knows the radio singles. I love this record, and I’ll continue to love this record. 5*

The three main songs definitely stick out as the best on the album, but the rest perfectly fill the album. It's very versatile. My favorite has to be Time to Pretend. MGMT is a band I plan on listening to more. This is an amazing debut.

The sounds of young summer in simpler times with energy and joy. It feels vibrant and energetic, bringing a breath of fresh air to the list.

New rave, neo-psychedelia, indietronica, electronic rock, psychedelic pop, psychedelic rock, synth-pop.

Just a classic. Makes me feel very nostalgic for a time that I was just a bit too young for.

One of those albums that is so embedded in my bloodstream there's no way for me to review it fairly. Remember being 18? Yeah... that's basically it. Must-listen #345

Loved this! Joyful! Great rhythms! Had it on very loud several times. Love the voice too.

Oracular Spectacular exists on a plane that no longer exists. It's 2007. The worst thing going for us is the war in Iraq. Ahead of us: a financial crisis we will never fully recover from, followed by creeping and then overt fascism replacing our politics. I can hear the hope in their voices, and feel the shadows of my own, now shattered dreams.

Really like the album - Time to Pretend and Kids are absolute classics - torn between 4 and 5, but the album tracks are better than I recalled so gone 5

This album feels like the cover vibrant, the music feels like a loose confidence but clear and bold with a dreamy trippy haze with lots of colours Its cinematic and triumphant in parts Time to pretend is anthem like Weekend wards brings you back to earth and makes you think The youth is a somber trip of change Then electric feel pulls you in to dance in a moonlight haze For me this album is a strong 8 Good to listen to on a high And electric feel remains one of my all time favourite tunes.

It's kind of amazing how much of MGMT's style immediately shows up on their debut album, when they were my age. That being said, they are SO young on this record, and you can hear it. This album perfectly captures that weird college feeling of having strong beliefs and opinions but struggling to actually convey them except for a few hyper-specific points. It's more a general disillusionment with the world around you without specific solutions in mind. Some songs do target specific issues, like Kids and Time to Pretend, but I was really blown away by songs that had none. Songs that make wild analogies that aren't really connected or about anything, but connected entirely by vibes. They don't quite live up to Neutral Milk Hotel in that way, but I found this album at a point in my life where it perfectly fucking speaks to everything I'm thinking. Loved it.

This is a really important album for people my age. I think every person I group with knows at least some (if not all) of the signs in this record. Obviously, the big songs on this record are the ones that everyone knows (Electric Feel, Kids, Time to Pretend) but those have always been the weakest on the record for me. I do love Time to Pretend, because of the lyrical commentary and then how that actually kind of panned out for the band. Time to Pretend into Weekend Wars and The Youth is so perfect. I love how it goes from this indie pop song into kind of Pink Floyd inspired psych rock bender. It’s weird, but grounded. It keeps you engaged and committed. Pieces of What has always been my favorite. I love the longing of this one. And then how it turns into an epic midway through. The Handshake into Future Reflections I love this record. It’s one that I revisit a few times per year. I love the weirdest, the boldness, the self reflection, the innocence, the fact that a lot of it doesn’t work. It’s a beautiful mess.

Another classic for me.

I honestly think the deeper cuts off of this are nearly as good as the singles, but because people haven't heard them as much, they think the rest of the album falls flat. That being said, Kids is still the best track off this record by a long shot

This was a great album with lots of bangers

Do I give this a five? Eh why not

Love this record, first real pop/electronic record I really enjoyed as a kid. Still holds up, trippy fun and catchy. MGMT rules.

The three singles are the greatest indietronica songs ever written. The rest of the album is also good, but the singles well and truly steal the show. I mean: Time to Pretend... Electric Feel... Kids!!! (Kids has to be my favourite here and one of my favourite songs of all time) Low 5* (would happily listen at any moment, and have given too many mid-albums a 4* recently - this has to be set aside!)

Absolutely banging inclusion. Fave Track: Kids

"Pieces of What" og gitarsoloen på "Of Moons, Birds & Monsters" må også nevnes.

Hørt på to ganger! Syns congratulations e bedre men fortsatt 10/10 svak for det meste av MGMT

This is a generational album that I never listened to at the time, though I definitely always heard the massive singles. The rest of the album holds up quite well to these--it's not just three singles and filler. Listens great. 5/5

4.5 stars. The phrase "a college-dorm experiment gone horribly right" is one of my favorite descriptions of an album and is so fitting. The hits are timeless with catchy melodies that bring me back to such a fun time in life. The second half fades a bit and is more generic space rock but it still such a strong record overall.

Total classic. This was a pretty foundational album for me and revisiting it was awesome. There are so many flavors to these songs and they still sound (to me) pretty fresh and creative. I didn't grow up listening to The Beatles and now that I am more familiar I hear the influence front to back on this record alongside bits of Prince and Bowie combined with some really catchy hooks and synth instrumentation. This album is striking for being "electronic" but also featuring a ton of really standard instrumentation. Magic happened in the mixing room and it's crazy that two college students were responsible for this. I think this is a really excellent example of the sort of indie lo-fi pop that exploded in the early 2000s and 2010s. 5/5 all the way.

MGMT my goat

Classic

Really enjoyed.

Its like alright.

A solid album with good vibes. Strong synths and catchy hooks throughout. It’s quite simple, but that works well.

this really surprised me, I loved it top to bottom. There was a lot of unique and engaging poppy things going on and those hits deserve their status

Álbum imperdible

i know this album very well lol

I'm an MGMT fan so there is a bit of bias in this review I've listened to this album multiple times, and wouldn't even consider it the band's best musically out of their discography (that would be Congratulations), however upon a fresh listen I will say that, in terms of message/cohesiveness, this is easily #1. Covering the theme of growing up/looking back on childhood, while including some fantastic beats/mixes along the way, is impressive for a debut album

toujours bon à réécouter

Very nostalgic! Super funky and vibey! Makes me appreciate electronic music more! Kind of a banger album ngl

It is difficult to find all that much wrong with this album. It’s wonderful, playful production has aged brilliantly since its release in the 2000s. The bigger tracks, that I knew going into this listen, (Time To Pretend, Electric Feel, Kids) are only strengthened by the excellent ensemble of album cuts. Weekend Wars is a favourite of mine, with the wobbly, spacey instrumentation giving way to a dramatic crescendo. I know MGMT claim that they didn’t take this album all that seriously, but I don’t buy it. This is expertly, deliberately crafted. I hope to hear “Little Dark Age”, another great MGMT album, on this generator one day!!

This is really good. Already liked a lot of their singles but it’s very good as an album too. What’s even more impressive is that this was written as a parody of pop, but ends up being actually great music. Best songs are Time to Pretend, The Youth, Electro Feel, Kids, and The Handshake.

It's MGMT, a classic of my high school years. It's electronic rock, kind of like an 80's revival - but with much more modern drums, synth, and heavy bass. Mostly it's his voice and heavy synth that gives it the 80's electronic vibes. This is a solid album all the way through. The sound is very similar overall, so it feels a bit like the same song all the way through - but their sound is so polished that it doesn't feel boring. I think this might be the first 5 in this project so far.

An undeniable note of sadness rings through the whole album, even in it's highest moments. Beautiful album.

so many good ones. a fun album.

Fantastic album from start to finish.

No skips. Nostalgic. Album of a generation

Loved this. It felt very nostalgic.

Love this album, so good to hear it again.

10/10.

peak summer music

A modern day homage to wish you were here by pink floyd. Some songs I was already familiar with. All in all great album!

A vibe a great time. What classic.

Lo escuché millones de veces. Le tengo mucho cariño.

Great album. Very creative. Brings back good memories

Love these guys and this album!

Great album with electric-feeling like songs. Irregular sound for me

I know this band already, but they're already getting me with the first song. I know I'm gonna like this album. Ok listening to the whole album...YES. THIS WAS SO NICE TO LISTEN TO!

Classic

An unexpected delight. Great hooks.

this is who djo thinks he is two years ago when i found out they're called the management and not em gee em tee i love when the most popular songs aren't the best on the album.. i just had a religious experience hearing of moons, birds and monsters for the first time wow they're goated

Excellent... 4th dimension is one of the best songs ever written.

I already knew some songs from this record, but I’ve been wanting a reason to listen to the rest of it. This was it, and I’m glad I did.

Fantastic album takes you in a psychedelia journey and never fails to make me happy

Rendyrket nostalgi!

Classic !

It is impossible for me to be objective about this one, this album is early college for me, it was inescapable at the time and in a good way. "Time to Pretend" "Electric Feel" and "Kids" are so so good, and "Weekend Wars" and "The Youth" are also great. The back half of the album is definitely a little weaker, with the only standout for me being "The Handshake"

Favorite Songs: Time to Pretend, Of Moons, Birds & Monsters, Kids Least Favorite Song: 4th Dimensional Transition Feels like summer camp and a warm hug.

Solid tracks throughout

This is my first 5/5 album and the reason is simply 3 songs: time to pretend, kids, electric feel. They’re simply elite bangers that slap every single time. 5/5 Yes kings

great!

Loved all the songs, they remind me of like a late 2000s college summer coming of age movie. Made me feel nostalgic and I love the song kids, always have.

How is this a debut album? The singles in particular are instant classics whilst also being simple, gorgeously melodic and effortlessly cool. The rest of the album may not be so straightforward but The Youth, Weekend Wars and Of Moons, Birds and Monsters add succulent meat to the album bones

MGMT are a rich man's Spiritualized. 5/5

Fun hang- didn’t realize so many songs had been used in media. It was cool to see where they came from.

My type of music! Poppy, slightly eccentric and a nice varied album. Knowing I’m probably going to come across some genres i don’t tend to listen to this one is delightful. Love the “joy of youth” vibes and makes me appreciate being alive. Time to go run and frolic on a beach!

10\10. I love this album.

I’m somewhere above a 5, though not quite a 10, even though it’s damn close. Obviously, I knew the big hits going into this one; “Electric Feel” & “Kids” are platinum as hell, with “Time to Pretend” slightly behind them (yet still just as good). Those 3 tracks feel like cornerstones of not only the 2000s, but just hallmarks of an entire millennial mindset present in the lead-up to Barack Obama’s inauguration all those years ago. They’re the standouts of the album still, but they don’t paint the full picture of this album’s intent, and what emerges from the entire thing is even more potent & vivid as a complete package. It feels like starry-eyed optimism by today’s standards, but the adventurous feel of this whole album, as if it was prepared for both a potential utopia & a societal nightmare at the same time, rings even more deeply true nowadays. A track like “Pieces of What” just feels brutally shattering, especially with all of the hell that’s been going on the past few years, yet a track like “The Youth” still feels like something worth striving for, even with the disheartening turns as of late. Despite the starry-eyed optimism of the lyrics not really working in the way that most people probably imagined, I think this album’s soundscape is what lifts it up to a point of stellar energy throughout, both in the complimentary & the space-y sense. The production work here feels really far ahead of 2007 to me, with practically the entire album sounding like it could have been made in the 2020s without missing a beat. I’ve said that “channel ORANGE” was the sound of hip-hop for the 2010s & that “21” set the tone for pop for the 2010s, but somehow, this album feels like the start of something else, in a way that’s still kind of reverberating today for indie rock & beyond. The synth / bass work here is what makes the album really pop, & in combination with the ‘70s-styled guitars, the throughline from MGMT to bands like The 1975, Foster the People or acts like Tame Impala feels pretty clear. Even beyond that, I think the funk & the rhythm of these basslines extends its way into other facets of modern hip-hop production, so its influence goes far & wide, and music is arguably all the better for it. Ultimately, I think it’s a super easy 5 & higher – it’s a breezy 40 minutes that only occasionally falters with some harder to parse lyrics, but with an energy that feels deeply infectious to this day, still glowing with the hope of a generation (even if it hasn’t fully come to pass yet). I’m not at a 10 on a first pass, though it’ll probably get there with time; part of it is the lyrics feeling just a bit too optimistic right now in this moment, and part of it does come from the album feeling just a *little* bit same-y towards the end of the album, but those are just nitpicks for my brain. This is the oracular spectacular they claimed it would be, and I’m very glad to finally give this one a full listen. It was that good.

Very well done album. Music has a very distinctive tone and lyrics are thought out.

I try to not be the most millenial of all time, but i have a really hard time not just giving this a 5 on the basis of kids alone. Luckily the rest of the album is also good. Standouts: Kids Weekend wars Electric Feel

Takes me back to a few years ago. Love the whole vibe and energy of this album. This album really captures the energy of that time.

This is not at all what I expected. Reminds me of John Frusciante a bit. Very fun. Lots of creativity and talent.

Just an amazing album. Very few rock bands have as much originality these days.

Virkelig fedt og poppet!! Brings me back to 1g

Improves with every listen and always has done

It was SO good I enjoyed every song in this album. I only knew the title track before since It’s so popular but other ones are also at the same level. loved it. will definitely listen to it more.

The second half of the album is one hell of a step down from the first half but fuck it 5 stars for those singles.

Quite possibly the nostalgia filters have come back on, but this is a banger of an album

Rating is reflecting nostalgia. The first half is banging, drops off a little bit. Still going for a 5.

I loved it when this album came out. Re-emerging in the party scene after my second long-term relationship break-up, I was diving deep into the techno scene of the early 2010s and found myself surrounded by new friends 15 years younger than me. As a result, contemporary (alternative and dance) music was presented in front of to me as well. What I truly loved about this album, and still do, is its eclecticism and references to (psychedelic and progressive seventies) music I already knew. It was refreshing nearly 20 years ago, and it still holds its ground, which certainly can't be said for everything that came out in the early 2010s. Due to my profound memories of that blissful time, the strong melodies, and the proggy take on indie music, I'll rate it 5/5.

7, enjoyed relistening to the album

Audibly gasped at the first track, all I hear is Saltburn. This is what I crave for.

THIS ABLBUM WAS GREAT

I didn’t realize that MGMT wasn’t just all upbeat or electronic. I was surprised by how many old school sounding songs they had. Would listen again!

No. 61 Great album with strong retro-vibe, but sounds so modern at the same time.

I Can remember when I first listened this album

Great album, reminds me of my university years. Lots of songs are very good, and the ones I didn't remember I liked too. 4,5/5

Classic

Always loved this album, instant classic! From the upbeat synths to the David Bowie inspired vocals, it’s an album that truly takes you on a journey of genres.

The controversy is always if an album "deserves" to be on the list. This album DOES. It's eclectic with catchy tunes and the deep cuts are just as good as the singles. This was an easy 5.

Very very good. A favourite band of mine from a few years ago so writing this with a lot of nostalgic bias. Really enjoyed listening through this again however and I don't question my old music taste. A bit different to what I normally like I suppose which is cooler than anything else. Favourite track - Of Moons, Birds & Monsters probably. Lots of contenders for that title.

One of my all time fav albums, reminded me of being sent away to my nana’s the summer of 2010ish

Brilliant.

One of my favorite indie rock albums. Imagine having such a debut album. Luckily for us, they got closer after several attempts with Little Dark Age. This album has three stand out songs that should be known by everybody: "Time to Pretend", "Electric Feel" and "Kids". The latter is one of those songs I could listen to forever in a loop. Additionally, I believe that the rest of the album is severely underrated. The second half of the project falls unexplainably unnoticed, while you can find very good pieces such as "Pieces of What" and "Of Moons, Birds & Monsters". A well recognized masterpiece. This album HAD to be included in this list, and I am super happy we came across in this journey.

another bop!!

I remember listening to this album a lot back when I was at uni - deffo my kinda music

you literally actually don’t have to tell me twice to listen to this

-Oh shit I didn't know this song started with fuckin NOISES! -I'm going to be so real Time to Pretend is one of those songs that really does hit me full in the chest whenever I hear it -LOVE these opening vocals for Weekend Wars -Fuck dude this tastes like 2007 -Electric Feel Fmonday -Oh my GODDDD. -Woah 4th Dimensional Transition is so interesting. Would be floaty dreamy sounding with the synths and vocals but the persistent drumming grounds it with an overpowering urgency

Guilty pleasure

100% A+++ album. Great album, could listen endlessly.

10/10 for the nostalgia

I’ve never listen to Iron Maiden before and now I feel this will be one of my work playlist adding to my system of the down playlist as we speak. I really enjoyed it. I will say, I do picture Jack black as the front man in my head. Lol

Sick album

Pure nostalgia trip. I was in 5th or 4th grade maybe. My grandma was going through a musical renaissance herself and Gave the Beatles a break for this, Maroon 5 and some Gwen Stefani lol. Yeah, the classics on here, Time to Pretend, Electric Feel, Kids, really are the powerhouse but the other songs are really good, too. I think these kids were in college just playing their shit for classmates. Pretty creative stuff.

I really enjoyed these songs, either 4 or 5 stars, the majority of which are 5 stars. Having seen these guys a few times over the years, I can say they are a blast live. And this album is apex MGMT: 5 dancing stars.

Amazing debut album

Really excellent album. I'd heard Kids and Time to Pretend before, but the time flew by listening to this.

May seem silly to give 5/5 after the albums we've just had but this transports me back to 2008 and it feels good. The three big tracks are great pop songs that are so recognisable but unique and stand the test of time. I listened to a podcast a while a go called song exploder where each episode they have a guest on to dissect one of their tracks. MGMT broke down time to pretend and they mentioned at the end of the song they added in the piano from abba's dancing queen, now I always listen for that. The other tracks are good too, personal favourites are Of Moons, Birds & Monsters and Pieces of What.

nostalgia bomb

surprisingly banging, it deserves it

increíble

This album is so fucking great. I forgot how good it was such a time capsule for just a super fun era. I was broke sleeping on couches mostly but we dance with my shirt off at night. I need to go through all the other tunes I was collecting during this time a lot of them on Spotify amazing remixes . This album from beginning to end has such a great flow each song weaves into the next, but are all unique. The production on this is fantastic. It’s so funny that they just had a moment of greatness and then kind of simmered down. I wonder what plays into that the boiling up the moment in time that is captured excitement anticipation, all of it just the magic of a great album and then what happens fame you ride that album and kind of lose your perspective lose what made all that great songwriting possible. Not really harping on MGMT. I’m sure they’re still awesome but this album was especially good.

I had this when it was new. Fantastic album.

One of the defining albums of the early 2000’s. Great vibes and love that the psychedelic feel made it back to the radio. Has that Flaming Lips influence.

Indie darlings hit it off big time on their debut album.

great album, very nostalgic. more like MLNL

CLASSIC

Reminds me of good old times. Such a good record.

Oracular Spectacular is spectacular. It would be impossible for the rest of the album to match "Time To Pretend," "Electric Feel," and "Kids," but the remaining songs are strong and a front to back listen is so rewarding.

it's weird that only in retrospect has this album grown to be a juggernaut of nostalgia for me: i (along with everyone else) was inundated with this album's singles through the tail end of the 2000s. i liked the songs so it was fine if they were a bit overplayed, but i really didn't feel compelled to seek them out when i'd already had my fill (please, no more, my cup runneth over). in the years that followed i began to accumulate disparate mgmt songs that found their way into my life - my online life, really, as that's where i was spending my time in the years that followed. i never did a straightforward front-to-back listen of this album, because it came to me in bits and pieces until, finally, in 2018 they released little dark age and i had the thought "wow, mgmt is good again!" prompting me to get to the last dregs of oracular spectacular. only then, 11 years later, had i ""listened"" to this album. i'm certain my experience isn't unique to my generation, but i can't help but think about how this album grew on me (or rather, grew with me), and how i experienced mgmt gazing into a computer screen. i started seriously getting into music in the streaming era where the concept of "the album" really doesn't matter anymore: albums are fractured, decontextualized, and anyone can sift through the pieces and pick out what they want to take back home with them. heck, my habit of picking out "highlights" from each album is because that's how i've come to conceptualize music growing up on an endless stream of apportioned songs presented to me by the mighty algorithms of pandora, spotify, youtube, and so on. 1001 is the first time in my life i've spent any time seriously considering ~the album~ as a consummate work of art. and oracular spectacular, as a consummate work of art, represents the 2010s for me. it is an album of nostalgic fragments i've haphazardly pieced together navigating the new age of social media as a young person, but if i'd experienced this album any other way, at any other time, i would've never had the privilege of experiencing the profound love i have for this album. if i get in my feelings, hearing kids or time to pretend will make me cry. spare me a moment of cheesy sentimentality, but i can't help to echo back: yeah, it's overwhelming, but what else can i do? i have a job, an office, and a morning commute. highlights - time to pretend, weekend wars, the youth, electric feel, 4th dimensional transition, future reflections

Awesome in every way. I’ve never not enjoyed listening to any track from this album.

amazing

The album of a generation, I think. You couldn't escape MGMT for several years, but I personally didn't want to.

Absolutely iconic. Genre defining. Generation defining. This album is timeless

Not many songs I don't love off this album and definitely not my first full listen. First half of the album is packed to the brim with classic 00's hits. Not everything on the back half hits quite as hard but nonetheless this is a classic from my childhood. Always going to be a 5 star for me. Favourites: Time to Pretend, Weekend Wars, The Youth, Electric Feel, Kids Least Favourite: 4th Dimensional Transition, The Handshake Rating 9/10

it never gets old

So happy this album is on here. Certainly some nostalgia goggles going into this one, but I haven't listened in a couple years so I'm excited. This album has absolutely zero misses. Every song is filled with character. The first half has the stronger songs, but I think they might just get more air time as singles. Electric Feel is a top 100 song. Kids might even be, too. Actually Time to Pretend might be better than both of those. Perfect mix of spacey electronic and indie jamming. Wish I could listen to this one for the first time again.

Time to Pretend is so much damn fun. Obviously the standouts also are with Kids and Electric Feel. Just straight classics if you're a millennial. Weekend Wars and the Youth are excellent complimentary songs on this front half as well. Insane 5 song run. The next couple songs aren't bad per se, they just fall flatter compared to the previous insane 5 songs. Then we come to Of Moons, Birds, & Monsters which might be my favorite MGMT song of all time. The second half is just a perfect ride for me. This album is too nostalgic for me to give anything less than a 5, and with the amount of absolute classics, the rest is above avg enough to give it that for me. That being said I hope we get Congratulations still but I know we won't :( IMO that is their best album and you can tell because it has a song about Brian Eno.

Yessir!!!

An album I loved when it came out in my early 20s and haven't really listened to it a lot since 2009/10. Listening to it now brings back a lot of good memories and the album is surprisingly better than I anticipated.

It's as good as I remembered :,)

I keep forgetting about this album and then really loving it whenever I ReDiscover it.

i said OO GIRL listen, rate, and then review baby girl turn it on, let vibes ensue

Awesome album. Creative, nostalgic and psychedelic

Great album with strong retro-vibe, but sounds so modern at the same time. Fav: Electric Feel

I listened to two 1 star albums today so I treated myself with this as a palate cleanser. This is a perfect album. We are lucky to live in a time in which we can listen to MGMT. I love you MGMT.

I was 16 when this album was released. No better age for a first listen, and it certainly gets those extra nostalgia bonus points from me, but I do honestly think this is an incredible record. It made me realise that indie electropop music can feel profound. A collection of different synth sounds can be organised in such a way as to invoke feelings previously unfelt. The first half of the album is solid hit after solid hit. Catchy. Sing a long. Beauty. Riffs. The joy and folly of youth. Then after Kids we transition to some more experimental stuff. These songs aren't just basic indie pop numbers. They are often elaborate, intricate, delicate, trippy, dreamy, whimsical, psychedelic. I love both halves equally for different reasons and as a whole this is an album i would recommend to anyone but especially to any 16 year olds reading. Favourite track - Of Moons, Birds and Monsters. 9/10

A defining album, absolute masterpiece

Ho cummato

I don't know if it's great but I love every song.

It took me waaaay to long to get into MGMT. I liked a lot of their contemporaries at the time but something about them never clicked. (Of course perhaps their biggest hit, "Kids" was a song I never really liked). It was only a few years that I finally got these guys. So glad I did. 9/10

Great album. From a time when I was a young lad in college got me through a lot.

Every song speaks, such an easy album to enjoy!

Fun, biased cause of how much I loved it when I was younger. Still enjoyable to listen to

God, I love this album. Time to Pretend, Kids, and Electric Feel are some of my favourite songs in general so it was a treat getting this today. The endings a little on the solemn side but still fantastic. Little Dark Age should be on here one day. Fantastic.

Brings me back!

This might be a little nostalgia tinged, but I do remember the first time I heard this album I listened to it three times in a row because I loved it so much. Still holds up

For the memories!

I own this album. But, to be honest, I couldn't name a song other than the big three: 'Time to Pretend', 'Electric Feel' and, of course, 'Kids'. I'm ashamed to admit that I probably put the album on my itunes and picked out those three. Wow! That's a real sign of the pre-Spotify/Streaming service times. But, I digress, the album. 'Time to Pretend' is an absolute banger. The lyrics are so childish, but it works. And, perhaps that's the theme across this album. There's a charm to it, that just makes sense. What really surprised me was that I really enjoyed the rest of the songs. There really aren't any duds. Perhaps the ender could be a bit stronger. The melodies seem more complex than they actually are. And, the synths seem to be in the same vein. I got this album about the time I really discovered what a synthesizer was (and how it worked). I always thought a synth was a true sign of sophistication in music. Perhaps this album fuelled that. 'Kids' is still awesome. I saw them play at Glastonbury (and then everyone leave after they played it - this was 2013 post their weird album that came after this). I never really liked 'Electric Feel', but actually really enjoyed the bass this time round. However, there are winners deep in the album for those not like 2010 me (yep, I was that uncool I bought it 3 years late!). 5 Stars.

Classic. Really had the late aughts on fire

Spectacular indeed; I gained new appreciation for the album cuts whose intricacies continue to amaze while the familiar bangers continue to bang. This is a stunning debut that is worthy of the best of Sparks, Love, Spirit or any other earthy-yet-ethereal Psych-pop band you can name. Like so many other classic albums of the time benefited from Dave Fridmann’s knob-twisting, but would’ve been a classic either way.

Ah I already know I'm going to like this one. This takes me back to being 20 and smoking endlessly in my attic flat. There are some absolute bangers on this album, even outside the singles. This album makes me think of endless summers and endless nights

classic

It’s got a fun sound all around

These are some of the best pop songs of my generation. I always say the 90s has the best music but damn the decade that followed just fucked so hard. This album is making me nostalgic for a time when I was young and idealistic and didn't have a mortgage. This is exactly the album I needed right now. Listened to it repeatedly today. Time to Pretend is a song whose lyrics made listen in wonder. The fullness of the story, the resigned despair at the end while this funky spacey groove unfurls behind it. Genius. The hypnotic effect of the repeating lyrics, the cosmic potency of their best song Of Moons, Birds and Monsters. This album sounds better today in 2025 than it did 18 years ago. The vibes, as they say, are immaculate. This is a classic psychedelic pop record that's better than anything Tame Impala has ever done.

Amazing album, lots of nostalgia from a few years ago with this one. Just perfect.

It’s their only good work. This was the soundtrack to my life when it came out.

absolute banger, 4.5

Was basically unfamiliar with this album -- it was good.

Ja sali tschüss tschau. Ez wird business gmacht vum management. Was ein spektakel.

The youth is starting to change, are you starting to change

Great pop album, changed the game back when it was made, and still feels fresh today. Many great hits, a little long on some songs, but all in all still a very enjoyable experience. Even if this was meant to be a parody of music at the time, it struck the core of what made that music special in my eyes, and really shines with the singles. I could put any of these songs on during a party and everyone will get down to dance methinks. It just feels happy, even in spite of the lyrics. 5/5

I love MGMT. I'm sure I've listened to this album before. It may be my mood, but I didn't enjoy it quite the same this time. Still, I think it's a solid album, and it reflects the indie style that shone through the 2010s. For me, it's an 8.5 out of 10. mini0n, 10/09/2025

Fantastic debut album from a couple of liberal arts majors who got into music as a lark. Beyond the standouts here ("Time to Pretend," "Electric Feel, " "Kids") there are some great, weird psych-rock tunes. They would go even further in that direction with their next album, "Congratulations," but the creativity and joy here is palpable. Even Paul McCartney was a big fan of this album. And they continue to evolve and improve on their sound.

Probably the best indie pop album of all time. Throwing together funk and psych and pop and surf and indie rock and even disco, what a sonic stew. Listened to it on repeat as a teenager and it's still in frequent rotation for me. Oracular Spectacular was MGMT's big break and has their biggest songs, they could have easily rested on their laurels after it or kept trying to make hits, but theyre true creatives and continue to make compelling stuff into 2025. Honestly think Congratulations is an even better record, but its hard to beat the hooks of Kids or Electric Feel, and the deep cuts on here also rule.

Absolutely amazing album

Kids got overplayed, this album has no filler. Didn't appreciate it when it was current, sure do now

Still my favourite album by them

Great end of summer vibes, some familiar sounds and new finds!

I hear time to pretend and i get chills to being 14 years old again. The nostalgia rushes back to me like a wave. Running and grabbing my ipod to illegally download this from Limewire so I can show my friend right before homeroom. Absolutely epic album

One of my favorites so far I loved this album, it's great from front to back

+ electric zoo

Awesome

I like it

This was the only CD I had in my car for a year during high school. Great memories of this album. Top 50 for me, probably.

Makes me wanna party so hard, 5/5 for relistenability!!!

This album is the original Indie Sleeze! It really exemplifies the principles that were prevalent during the 2010's. I also saw them at Lollapallooza and while others said it was a lackluster performance, I enjoyed it.

I have never heard anything like MGMT, and i probably never will

Childhood memories... So good

Oh boy… it’s going to be reallyyy hard for me to be objective about this one. This album was EVERYWHERE during my first few years of college. It’s so indelibly linked to those carefree days of living fast, partying, and not caring about tomorrow. So, forget trying to be objective, I’m just going to appreciate the nostalgia and soak it all in. ✌️🤑🪬🪐🍻 5/5 Highlights: Time to Pretend Weekend Wars Electric Feel Kids

One of my favorites of all time

Awesome album, does start to get same sounding by the end but it has so many bangers. 9/10

Iconic. Never actually listened to the whole album, just knew the couple bangers. Really enjoyed the other stuff too. I hope there never comes a time in my life where I hear Kids and don't immediately start jamming.

I love that this album is on here. This is maybe the first album on the playlist that I feel like truly belonged to me and my friends growing up. This came out towards the end of Middle School for me and really took hold a few years after that. MGMT were constantly played by me and my friends, alongisde Passion Pit, Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club, Temper Trap, M83, alt-J, and others. This era of electronic/synth-driven indie music was incredible. "Time to Pretend" is an amazing song. The synth parts are iconic. Everything about the production is amazing. "Weekend Wars" has some of my favorite vocals on the album. I don't know why the whiny vocals are so great, but they are. "Electric Feel" and "Kids" are two more iconic songs. They are about as recognizable as songs can get. For my specific slice of my generation, and maybe others, these are as recognizable as "Hey Jude' or "Bohemian Rhapsody" coming on. "Pieces of What" sounds like MGMT doing an Oasis impersonation. That makes me like it. "Of Moons, Birds & Monsters" has some sweet drums and guitar in it. This is one of the most potently nostalgic albums we've had (if not the most), and it fills me with a lot of emotions. It really feels like two albums, separated by "4th Dimensional Transition". The front half of the album gets a 10/10, and the back half gets an 8/10, so I'll have to average them out. 9/10

I think Kids is still the highlight of the album for me but I love the vibe in general.

Spectacular indeed

Fuck yeah good album reminds me of drugs and fucking

Classic

the loveliest. About childhood. As well as about mine. Lovely and touching. 9\10

• they really had us in a chokehold then, didn't they? • 5 ★ just for the nostalgia

Loved this album when it debuted and still do!

Love it

Historically I've been down on the so-called 'Alternative/Indie' boom of the mid-late 2000s. The music of the period sounds, to me, like a soulless jumble; bands replete with singers who looked the same and sounded the same, guitarists who played the same shoddy riffs; songs that covered the same ground and pushed exactly zero envelopes. The entire period affected an air of effortlessness and superiority - only it wasn't effortless at all, in fact the desire to appear effortless was tragic along Titanic lines. I came into 'Oracular Spectacular' with the same critical apparatus in place. I expected to hate this record; I expected be filled with a desire to time travel to 2008 and do ghastly things to the band. To my surprise, the critical apparatus disintegrated and I found myself getting more than a little verklempt. This was an incredible listening experience. The whole record is effortlessly anthemic, cosmic, etherial...and yet completely grounded. This is, for me, the apex of its genre. In a sea of bands with the emotional range of an electric toothbrush head MGMT rises from the depth and proves that there is something there, below the surface, below the ripples and the bubbles and the affect and the costume and the same dead eyes and blank faces and haircuts...there might just be something more. This is a heavy rotation record.

Only knowing the 3 big songs off this album, I'm genuinely glad I got to experience the complete album.

5/5 no notes

One of my desert island albums, perfect no skips. So much fun

First track amazing definitely going to become one of my favourites. Not too fond on the second track weekend wars though. Same with track three if I am honest. Track 4 Electric Feel is good imo still not hitting the highs of track 1. Kids is biblical dare I say more. Track 5 isn’t great definitely a miss on this project. Track 6 Pieces of What is quite good when you get into it. Last few tracks were an actual vibe bro. 10/10

Such a seminal album and band of this era. Fave song: Time to Pretend, Future Reflections

This album came out when I was in middle school, and I love it just as much today as I did then.

Spectacular album. One of my favs

Album of the the summer for the 18th year in a row

Just love

Played this cd a million times

♫ Listening to "Time to Pretend" by MGMT (Time to Pretend - SOTW, 2007) ♫

I never knew MGMT, only by some memes with Eletric Feel. Even though I am a 90's kid, it just didn't make its way to me I suppose. That's what I love about this project, I had a streak of bad albums that took me a while to recover from, but I'm so glad when I got back I got an absolute string of bangers, and this one takes it. Cheerful party music that wasn't afraid of sounding meaningful. And I'd bet at the time they were considere shallow, but anyone that listen to this album will be able to say all tracks still hold up in lyrics and melody. An absolute must-hear-multiple-times-before-even-generating-the-next-suggestion. The only track I didn't quite enjoy was 4th Dimesion, so... Fav Track: all of them

Indy Rock original

Love it!

Three bangers and the rest is not too bad.

Listened before?: Yes, many times An album for the youths, that I loved when I was a youth.

Love this album, has to be 5 stars as these guys wrote this and pioneered the sound of psych pop that I love today. Inspired so many

Classic for me - makes me feel like im back in high school

This is an amazing record that you don't think you'll like but every song here is well written and instantly becomes a favorite because it exists in a place that defies everything you expect and becomes the kind of record you urge everyone to listen to because it's so perfect,

Classic.

Now this is an album that never gets old for me. I own this on vinyl and it has one of the strongest "A sides" of any album ever. "Time to Pretend", "Weekend Wars", "The Youth", "Electric Feel", and "Kids" is an INSANE run of songs!! Unfortunately the B side isn't as great but I do like "The Handshake". Overall this is one of the best indie albums of the 00s and the perfect coming of age album. Definitely a challenge to pick a favorite song here.. Favorite track: Time to Pretend 4.5/5

2007 was a fantastic year for entertainment. This album was a real nostalgia trip, and it still holds up excellently today.

love this low key electric pop vibe

I feel about this the way boomers feel about Led Zeppelin

FINALLY SOME GOOD FUCKING FOOD!!! I love MGMT and this is the kind of groovy I need to get through the day. this is probably one of their best albums too, ugh, love it

I first heard Kids in 2013 or 2014 when I was in 9th or 10th grade. My art teacher, Mr C, had a indie rock Pandora station playing all times during his classes. Mr C’s music taste ending up having a huge influence on my own for the rest of high school and beyond! This album is an easy 5/5 for me. Fav song is the iconic: Time to Pretend

pretty fricken good actually

If they make a musical about being a millennial in the late 00s early 10s, this would be the score.

Has Oracular Spectacular aged well? I think so, but I’m extremely biased as this album ranks highly among the most formative of my youth. I still love it. It’s an essential work of synth-pop/psych rock and in my opinion a modern classic. Though when I think about it in 2026, I can’t help but feel distracted from the music itself and more focused on how it’s perceived today by the larger culture. I fear a future in which some bullshit term like “Urban Outfitters-core” is used to describe a past era of indie music as dated and cringe, with the album art for Oracular Spectacular becoming a visual shorthand for “millennial cringe.” Don’t even get me started on “indie sleaze.” I could be fearful of this for other great oughts albums, but MGMT’s debut seems the one of the most likely to fall victim to this kind of dismissive pigeonholing. Lest we forget, it was huge. “Kids” and “Electric Feel” were ubiquitous. So was “Time to Pretend,” which popped up in a fuck-ton of movies, TV shows, video games, and commercials. The band opened for Paul McCartney at Fenway Park in 2009. Jay-Z asked them to make a song for The Blueprint 3 (he scrapped it). This level of commercial success was great for Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser’s pockets, but not so good for their minds and souls. They were uncomfortable with the their newfound and unexpected fame and creatively they were disinterested in trying to do anything like Oracular’s three big hits ever again. I recall choruses of disappointed fans around 2009-2012 complaining online, “I saw MGMT and they didn’t even play ‘Kids’…what the fuck??” So this is the strange dilemma MGMT found itself in during the heyday of indie blog rock. Oracular catapulted VanWyngarden and Goldwasser into the limelight on the backs of three throwaway pop songs written essentially as a joke in their Wesleyan University dorm rooms. In the span of three years they went from singing covers at college parties backed by an iPod to opening for of Montreal, (still backed by an iPod) to signing with Columbia and recording their first album with legendary producer Dave Fridmann. Soon they were playing major festivals and touring with Radiohead. If they had any idea they would become so big so fast, they probably would have made a very different album. Or maybe taken it more seriously. But that’s part of what makes Oracular Spectacular sublime. It’s not serious. This is the work of guys in their early twenties dicking around in the studio with the dude who produced Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Look at their weirdo tribal hippie get-ups on the cover, watch one of the music videos, note how they wore capes on Letterman. Gen-Z or whoever else can make fun of it all they want…the band was ostensibly making fun of themselves in the first place. What else makes it outstanding? The seven other tracks I haven’t even mentioned. MGMT’s story is fascinating in that it is so wildly unlikely in just about every conceivable way. They became huge on accident and will almost certainly never put out another album as successful as Oracular Spectacular.

I know that I basically love all aughts-era indie but this album really is something special. Just banger after banger. Such a great coming-of-age album.

Will relisten great album 9/10

super phonky and vibey. I'm definitely coming back to this. great songwriting too

Brilliant album, some really good massive summer hits and nice variation of tracks to keep it interesting while still being MGMT.

Great proto-vapourwave / shoegaze pop fun. Kids is definitely the outlier in terms of tone.

Bomb af

MGMT is one of my absolute all-time favorite bands so seeing this pop up on here was a nice surprise! I’m surprised to see this over Congratulations, but maybe that’s still yet to show up! OracSpectac is a pretty flawless album that helped the entire soon to be 2010s indie rock sound go mainstream, and while it isn’t a fiver in relation to the rest of the MGMT discography, it’s gotta be a fiver in relation to this list.

yeah i forgot how awesome this album is honestly, it goes so hard for no reason and I forget that i feel that way about every single song here. probably part of that is nostalgia, and actually i remember thinking i was cool and interesting when i was a tween and listening to this whole album all the way through--maybe one of the first albums i did that with--so it's funny to do it again now as an adult. but maybe that is part of what is feeling so good about it, is those memories of this album that make me feel like i am like, doing something by listening. it's giving me that self-involved childlike mindset that i think i lost not too much after i encountered this album the first time.

I can't think of a better way to describe being a teenager. I got all the memories and fantasies again from hearing this. All the friends, late nights, parties, running around, highs and lows. For 40 minutes, I got all of that back.

Great album. Did not expect mgmt to be this versatile

3/28/25. This album is a classic for me and is responsible for introducing me to "indie" or alternative music, especially in the pop space. Still sounds great to this day and every song brings a lot to the table.

👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I remember 2007. It fucking sucked. It was such a terrible year. The recession kicked off, everyone was miserable. The good feelings of the end of history were once and for all dead and buried. Look at a list of cultural products from 2007. There’s basically nothing there. It’s like Ratatouille and that’s it. And Jesus like 300 and Transformers are hideously dated nightmares reflective of the time. Ugly stupid movies. And music? Rock is dead at this point. You’ve got what? Kings of Leon? An okay Arctic Monkeys album? Hip hop was in the dirty south doldrums, with dime a dozen acts all chasing to be the next flash in the pan ringtone artist. And then there’s this album I’ve literally never listened to until today. And this is very clearly a cultural hinge point. This is the moment when the Bush era ends and we go to something new. It’s an album of fear and ennui and a desire for something new and better. It’s a call to action with no motivation. It’s the sound of youth in revolt that can’t find its way out the door. A burgeoning movement. The sound of burgeoning social media and the step towards an all encompassing tech culture. It’s indie pop without the pretension. Every album released after this has this one’s DNA in it.

Kids, Electric fields and time to pretend are songs of the album. It has its own tones and melodies. Very cohesive. Like it a lot!

The album opens with the iconic “Time to pretend”. With great synths & catchy melodies, this track does a good job of capturing the essence of the album. The lyrics here are really good too, and a little sad, but over an infectious song. Following this is “Weekend Wars”, which takes a different approach. It starts with simple but great sounding guitar, drums & vocals. By the end, the song has a lot going on with great arpeggios, synths etc. Surprisingly this song channels Mick Jagger vocally, and at least parts of the song seem to be a nod to 60’s Rolling Stones. “The youth” is a beautiful track, quite melancholic, with great lyrics too. The chorus is one of the best parts of the album so far. The following track is the massive “Electric Feel”, which is probably one of the best tracks of the 2000’s. It’s a perfectly crafted song, worryingly catchy chorus, brilliant bass line. There is nothing more to say about the track, other than it’s just great. I have similar feelings about the songs “Kids” except it comes with a bit more depth and a big sense of nostalgia. The second half of the album starts with “4th dimensional breakdown” which is a decent, more experimental song with a good outro but isn’t nearly as gripping as the other tracks so far. “Pieces of what” is fairly similar to “weekend wars” with the Mick Jagger inspired vocals. A great sounding guitar & lovely piano riff paired with the vocals make the song. I like that the song remains relatively stripped back throughout. “Of moons, birds and monsters” does a great job of balancing a pop and experimental sound with classic rock energy, with a great guitar break. The instrumentation here is on another level, and the second half of the song solidifies it as one of the best tracks on the album. The penultimate track “The handshake” has a great haunting sound to it, whilst still being as easy to listen to as pretty much any track here. The album finishes strong with “Future reflections” which is probably one of the best instrumental moments on the album. Overall, “Oracular Spectacular” is a great album, which manages to deal lyrically with quite melancholic or reflective topics of growing up and problems in life etc. whilst managing to make a brilliant sounding album which perfectly balances catchy pop choruses with experimental moments and classic rock elements. It is produced really well, too. 5/5.

Actually really enjoyed this album, one of the better ones I've listened to since starting this.

имба.

5/5. Can't believe 1) I've never listened to the full album and 2) they're from Middletown CT

I love The Management!

What a time to be alive. 8,5/10 Highlights Time to Pretend Kids Electric Feel

Fav: Kids Least Fav: The Handshake Finding a least fav song was difficult, it’s just banger after banger, the nostalgia helps too

Super sauce

Freshman favorite

I've never listened to the whole album before... Big mistake. Great sound. 4th dimensional transition wasn't to my tastes but all the other songs *chef kiss* 4.6/5

Sounds like a synthetic ride through the galaxy! Turn me on with your electric feel, shock me like an electric eel!

Soundtrack of the late 2000s. Just a perfect album.

Nostalgic, despite never really listening to their stuff. Fun instrumentals, though the vocal work felt a tad too distant for me at times. Good time overall though, and I enjoyed the overall composition! I'm between 'Electric Feel' and 'Time to Pretend' for faves!

i have listened to this album more times than i can count. this is extremely formative music for me.

Hell yeh! This came out when I was 17 so is full of nostalgia for me. No skips!

Great album, I already listen to it regularly

It slaps. I vibed to the whole thing.

Absolute classic of its era. The hits are great but some of the lesser known songs (Moons and Monsters, Handshake) are what really make this album sing.

Wow. This is really good. I’ve heard this album’s big songs plenty of times, but this was my first time listening to the entire album. This album is very much my bullshit. And today I learned a producer on this album (Dave Fridmann) has been involved in a lot of other stuff I love.

Really, really good. I’d never listened to this. It’s awesome.

Disco totalmente generacionl. Mgmt, los mejores en lo sullo

Obviously it rules

Love it all. These songs have become bigger than their parts

Excellent album - great blend of indie rock with electronic. Kids is an all-time song.

Classic album, half full of huge hits and the other half is pretty good too.
