Reviews (page 6 of 14)

This is a classic album, even though for me 1984 is always the first Van Halen album I think of. It's a good time, and I don't mind it at all. And holy crap that logo...I can almost smell the iron-on t-shirt at the mall. But it sure is cheesy and over-polished, and maybe that's a good reason for punk kids from the 80s to reject this music. 50 years later, this holds up surprisingly well, but realistically I probably won't be revisiting this any time soon. I cannot even imagine what it was like to be a member of Van Halen in 1978. DLR is basically waving his dick around on the album cover.

It’s quite the opening three tracks - WE ARE VAN HALEN, killer guitar solo, then a cheeky cover of a classic. That’s one way to start a debut album! I feel like I’m getting a mullet perm just listening to this… … and then ‘Ain’t talking about love’ 😮‍💨 stop it Eddy! Yeh, this is 🔥 Drops off in the second half though. Nice breakdown for ‘Little Dreamer’ and ‘Ice Cream Man’ which helps balance things a bit. First half so solid, second half less so. So probably just squeezes a 4

All timer. The best 4 song intro to an album, solid rock all the way thru

Love this album! Just raw and loose!

Great!

You really got me cover is soo good FUCK I bet shiv spanks it to Eruption while watching clips of roommates arguing with one another

Good stuff

Boy! I wish I hadn’t written these guys off as “Stoner music“ in the seventh grade. Of course, they rock so hard! And Eddie Van Halen‘s guitar work, while now strangely sounding like a parody of itself, at the time must’ve just blown people‘s minds. they are incredibly skilled and very fun to listen to.

great album

Great introduction to Van Halen. Excited to explore what else they have to offer. Classic rock FTW!!

Happy 70's!

Banger

I wanted to hate this album. Van Halen and David Lee Roth are/were prima facie what was uncool about popular music and what the alternative movement was going against. However, this is actually really good. For all of David Lee Roth's horniness he is still a great rock Singer. Eddie's pop guitar playing means that the songs are good and catchy. I would have never listened to this album without the list and I am glad that I did.

Much better album than I expected really set the stage for 80s heavy metal bands

This was ridiculous, cocky, awesome, goofy fun. I like that they don't take themselves seriously for a second. This is how you do it without that off-putting hipster irony a lot of 2000s bands employed.

This is a tough one but I am going to round up. If only these guys came out a decade earlier or later… but as it stands, the 80’s cheese holds them back for me.

Наконец-то я понял для себя прикол Ван Халенов. И ведь правда, как же он играл... КАК он играл, этот белый патлатый брат!

Decent 7.5/10

Eddie's guitar, Dave's screams, and a Barber-Shop Quartet (I'm the One)!!

Classic

Best Van Halen there is. Rocking out on a Saturday night or a Sunday morning.

This was a very nostalgic album for me. A lot of these songs were favorites of my mom, and I must have listened to this album with her at some point.

Tosi Van Halen. I like it. Kunnon meininki ja oikeaa soittoa.

JEAAAAH! Hyvä meininki, mielenkiintosta, mutta ei mitenkään liian eriskummallista. Aika luonnollista kuunnella jos nytt niin voi sanoa

Kind of wild that this came out in the mid(ish) 70's. Definitely ahead of its time. Enjoyed more than I expected. 3.5/5

so fun - 1st 6 tracks fantastic, the rest is good, but Feel your Love sounds just like Panama.

Crazy debut with tons of energy. Sounds like a bunch of high school guys full of testosterone with their hair on fire. Eddie is coming out the gate like a comet.

Legendary riff after legendary riff. Great hard rock album, and Eddie's masterwork on the guitar is pretty obvious from the start of their career. Not much variation on the tracklist, but why mess with a good thing? fav tracks: Runnin' With The Devil, Eruption/You Really Got Me, Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love

A real rock n roll album. My favorite part is the satanic song having very nice, melodic guitars

"Little Dreamer" my favourite!

Vaaarios clássicos.

I just need to get this out the way - I accept that EVH is a talented and innovative guitarist. I know he is good, I am just not a fan of his style. So to the album - it’s a tight, rocking set. I don’t know what I thought it would be like, but it’s not as hard as I thought, and not as hair metal as I thought. I quite enjoyed it. My issue is EVH’s tendency to showboat, which isn’t easy with DLR in the band! Eruption is a perfect example of one guy showing us all how terribly talented he is, and these are the tricks he can pull off. The tracks on here (bar Eruption) are great. It is a band working as a unit, and the consistency of the album is incredible. It’s fun without being tacky, and it’s rocking without being heavy. Good stuff.

Great guitar sound, some legendary riffs and solos

Classic 70s rock

Lively

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Atomic Punk, Little Dreamer I basically didn't need to listen to this album; As it turns out, I've heard virtually every track through osmosis over the radio at various points in my 36 years on this Earth. That being said, hearing it all together in a cohesive format was great. The guitar is great. The singing is great. The off-beat parts where they break into a shooby-doo-wap is fantastic. Of all of the similar genre bands I've heard so far from the List, this album by Van Halen is near the top of my personal favorites for the rock and roll genre.

Tiukkaa, hyvin soljuavaa soitantaa! Aiemmin tuntemattomat biisitkin raikasi ihan mukavasti.

Erinomainen levykokonaisuus. Soundia on kopioitu lähes loputtomasti, mutta silti kappaleet eivät kuulosta kuluneilta.

My mates brother, who was a guitarist, played this to us not long after it came out and no one could believe it! I still think it’s their best album today. Fab cover of You Really Got Me and Ice Cream Man is just nuts! Love it.

Much better

Das Debut von Van Halen - rock pur. 4/5

From the Wikipedia: Initial critical reception was negative Those critics heard Eruption, a song that is widely considered one of the best guitar solos of all time, and said "Meh"? Who the hell are these critics?

Sometimes what you really need is to listen to delicate, intricate and nuanced music which speaks to your soul and challenges your perception of what music is; how, why and to what end. To feel, experience and connect on an intellectual and spiritual level with the notes, chords, lyrics and atmosphere. And sometimes you just need to listen to Eddie Van Halen shredding his way through the 1-2-3 punch of Running With The Devil, Eruption and You Really Got Me.

Le début par en bombe mais la fin est pas mauvaise mais pas aussi excellente que les 4 premières tounes disons

Ça bang et c’est bon

So many hits! Was really surprised that I already knew just about every track on the album!

Not their best, not their worst, somewhere in between. Definitely didn’t have the top-to-bottom bangers that either of their first couple albums had, but good and entertaining all the way through. Definitely starting to get into more synth than i like, and DLR was kind of wearing thin at this point, but still a nice effort.

I don’t know if this is the first glam “cock rock” record to exist, but if someone told me it was, I’d believe it. I don’t really need to explain how iconic this album became. You want to know why Eddie Van Halen was one of the best guitar players of all time? Just play this record. Fucking Eruption man, what the fuck else proof do I need? Ok, all that out of the way, I don’t find this album perfect. My biggest gripe is that it’s front loaded. All the best songs are on Side 1. Side 2, outside of Jamie’s Crying, feels mostly like b-side material. And not in a “unknown gem” kind of way, but in a “not as good as the hits” kind of way. And on a personal note, i kinda sorta sometimes find David Lee Roth a little annoying. Listen, I get it. David’s charisma is insane and when he’s good, it’s amazing. But sometimes, he’s goes a little over-the-top for me and it gets under my skin a bit. That Ice Cream Man song in particular was a bit rough. But yeah, it’s fucking Van Halen’s debut. You’ll be hard pressed to find an album with a hot streak like Side 1. Favorite track: Eruption/You Really Got Me (these songs NEED to be together. Otherwise, it’s like getting Oreos, but only the cookie parts and no cream) Other hits: Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love, Jamie’s Crying, Runnin’ With the Devil, I’m the One, Feel Your Love Tonight

Is it big? Yes? Bombastic? Absolutely? Style over substance? Sure. Is it also a ton of fun? A ripping album for a road trip? A reminder of what rock is? Yes to all of that too. It's a blast.

Album Cover Art Review - 8-10 - the guys in classic rocker poses, well lit, different colors, great logo in the middle. Nothing else needed for debut album. Van Halen - burst onto the scene, rock never the same, insane album, can't even imagine how it landed in real time. No one could prepare for what was unleashed on them. Magic in a bottle for sure

This was fun. Some of the songs were a bit boring but overall I enjoyed listening to this. There's something so nostalgic but timeless about these songs and I can see why they've stood the test of time. It's better than a 3 but not quite a 4 for me, but I'll give it a 4 because it's better than neutral.

Giga cool, jestem fanką

Decent

Best Van Halen. Really changed rock back in. 1978

I enjoyed this more than 1984. It had more swing/swagger in the music and didn’t feel like it was diving too far into a polished, produced sound.

All around a pretty great album. It feels like 70s concert energy as an album, crazy guitar solos and everything. The radio hits are pretty good, the deeper cuts are really good, and it was just really fun. Also the guitar solos are violently 70s in the most fun way possible, I know I mentioned them twice.

First song great, erruption milestone 4/5 star

Divorced dad rock - still a fun easy listen

The first half of this album is great, the second half is average. What there is no denying is that Eddie Van Halen knows how to play a guitar and Diamond Dave knows how to high kick and jump. Now obviously I couldn’t see him do that but I know what he’s up to….

Van Halen: Van Halen: This shit rocks. Its a LITTLE samey, but the song quality is so high I really don't care, and the first half actually has some pretty good variety. The songs are just so much fun and have so much energy its basically impossible to dislike them. 9.5/10

This record opens with a pretty sweet Doppler effect horn sound that evokes a sort of crash landing of a car or spaceship. As a creative production choice, it's a real statement that something is about to happen. It's clear that this band is mostly a vehicle to feature the insane virtuosity of Eddie's face-melting guitar shreddage. This band has such a funny blend of influences. Diamond Dave Roth's vocals are often delivered like he's singing a show tune with a top hat and a cane and jazz hands. It's almost like cabaret hard rock. They are really out to give you the old RAZZLE DAZZLE, aren't they? The backup vocals and melodies all hearken back to their 50s and 60s rock and roll precursors, but definitely updated for the time. This album showcases a wide range of influences. It's at once swinging, doo-woppy, jump bluesy, hard rockin', soulful, folksy, garagey, and groovy. It has both razzle and dazzle. There's a real classical aesthetic to Eddie's guitar licks, with occasional hard chords. He uses a lot of little interstitial melodic licks here and there that are ornamental and almost act as a backup singer. The rhythm section is what tends to deliver any sense of heaviness. Otherwise, the compositions are often playful and basically just good time party music that doesn't take itself too seriously. They're basically a Muppet Show version of a hard rock band. Highlight tracks include "Running With The Devil" (a freakin penny whistle? are you kidding?); "Atomic Punk" - just a fun no frills rocker; "Ain't Talkin About Love" - probably the most serious song on the record, and the most horny and in need of a pee test; "Ice Cream Man" - a perfect example of the aforementioned cabaret show tune style pushed through a late 70s hard rock frame; and the 40s-50s inspired sing songy closer "Jamie's Cryin'". The more filler sounding tracks are still pretty unskippable. Simply put: despite its excesses and occasional wankery this record rules.  The album art is great. The multi-color gel lit photos of the band convey an energy and vibe that matches the contents, and although predates it by many years, suggests that they are kinda like Voltron: more powerful together than on their own. (This was pretty much proven in later years during the Great Band Schism that gave us Van Hagar). The iconic logomark really takes center stage here, however, with a design that suggests a hot rod hood ornament or a medal given to fighter pilots. It's like they knew we're gonna be seeing that on everyone's Pee-Chee folder for the next 25 years. Would give it 4.5 if this dang contraption would let me.

Some good bits.

Excellent and energetic hard rock played by very talented musicians. The whole album is very strong and one of the best debut albums, the band’s sound was already defined very well. Eddie Van Halen’s playing is spectacular as it always is and the energy is infectious. 4/5

Good listen, but only felt like one song was particularly compelling. Not sure why, but they're just not quite my cup of tea.

oh no I really don't want to listen to this... but well I am already here why not listen to it. Turn out to be good. Lot of guitar playing would remind me of Bad Brains which I was once extremely obsessed with. The overtone. Growing up in an era where you skipped the albums but only listened to those singles everyday, that is how I firstly listened to Van Halen. Now listening to the whole album all at once would bring different feelings. Metal rendition of blues song is quite funny. Like that.

I was shocked to like this album as much as I did. There's not that much guitar wankery as I first thought and there are even some solid tracks here. Ice Cream Man is the only real misstep and it's not even that bad.

Unbeatable hard rock classic! Catchy as hell, energetic and perfect for having a great and carefree time!

A classic. Impressive, innovative debut.

I of course know a lot of Van Halen, but I don’t believe I’ve ever listened through an entire album of theirs. We all know EVH is a guitar god. Listening through proves that. The guitar is part of the entire narrative of the music. It all makes sense when you listen. That guitar has its own life. lol This was quite enjoyable.

Album No. 0003 on my list. I had known some of the songs before, but had not ever listened to the full album. I had some expectations regarding the music, and they were pretty much met. Short, energizing rock songs with innovative guitar work. I also had no expectations regarding the lyrics. And my expectations were pretty much met. They are pretty bad. But as I said - did not expect a 2nd Dylan here. All in all, I enjoyed listening to Van Halen’s debut album and I can certainly see why this album has been so influential. It basically preceded most of 80s rock music and was really something innovative in 1978. 4/5!

I am not a fan of Van Halen, really. I can't get into David Lee Roth's whole squealing party boy shtick and I've never been a fan of Guitar God-style playing with all the crazy million-notes-per-minute shredding. That said, I completely understand how this album made this list and why a lot of people really love it. Eddie blends that Guitar God stuff seamlessly with some really tight, catchy pop songs with great choruses and all that. This album had like 7 songs that are still in the cultural consciousness today. That's one of the greatest debuts in the history of 'em. I didn't hate it at all, and I can appreciate the prowess, even though I'm not enticed to return.

Really great front to back.

Some all time classic jams here. Eruption and Ain't Talking About Love are my favorites.

It would have been a thrill to see Van Halen tour this album, with Diamond Dave's showmanship and Eddie V's virtuosic licks. I enjoyed this album a lot. Standout track: Ain't Talkin' Bout Love

Honestly felt very classic in sound. A lot of timeless songs that still sound good today. I knew about eruption and knew that it was very famous, but honestly didn't like it that much on this album. I'm sure that if you're a musician/guitar player that it's very impressive and cool, but as a more casual listener it's a bit too much

Runnin' with the Devil Eruption You Really Got Me Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love Jamie's Cryin'

Det er fanme dumt men det er fanme også gennemført. Det her album skulle ikke være et sekund længere

Lots of bangers! Pretty much how I define the 70's (rock) sound

Another debut album, this time from Van Halen. There are a few Van Halen songs that I like, but those sings are not on their debut album. When this album was released there was no music like this - rock with slightly more of an edge. Because of that and Eddie Van Halen’s guitar playing, I need to rate this album higher than average.

Pretty good for a debut album! 4.3

Cover 6 Yes! Fun songs though no real substance. So... Just for fun only

Some classic tracks on this album. A lot of it has been overplayed at this point but listening to the full album was a great reminder of how solid of an album this really was.

classic rock record, legendary solo, has some forgettable tracks though

One of my favourite openings to an album is this. “Runnin’ with the Devil” leads into a run of songs which showcase Van Halen at their very best. “Eruption” highlights the talent of Eddie Van Halen in a little over a minute and a half, and then a rockin’ version of “You Really Got Me” leads to my album highlight of “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.” A solid debut that I don’t think they topped with their subsequent releases.

Probably their best album. Few weaker songs but so iconic. Like being electricuted.

Probably the best for Van Halen. Which if you’re a fan would be great but as a casual listener was just moderate. Still more listenable than others on the list.

Some great songs on this album. Hair rock when it was reaching its peak.

Surprisingly good.

I had this when I was younger. But I didn’t realize until today how much it represented a bridge between the Led Zeppelin era of 60s/70s hard rock and the “stadium rock“ of the 80s. Not sure how I feel about that theory, but for better or for worse, this is a solid album!

7.5 / 10 - Some classics on this album, not quire worthy of 5 stars despit me loving eruption, just needed that lil summin summin extra

Good all late 70's Rock. Before they went massive with MTV. A lot of classrooms nuggets [and do not bring up Sammy Haggar)]. Fun and harmless

Full of energy and charisma, Van Halen's debut album contains to rock! Variations on the blues, metal, and rock and roll collide to give birth to glam metal and influence an entire generation of artists. There is a lack of variety on the album but given it's relatively short runtime this isn't necessarily a bad thing. A very enjoyable listen packed with classics

Classic album, can almost taste the cocaine in every song

dismissed this before I heard it, almost a big mistake

I was really pleasantly surprised by this album. I'm sure some of the lyrics are probably questionable but i'm not gonna look too closely and will be listening to this one again.

Wasn't brought up with rock and unlocking this new horizon feels great. I feel like this album is so accessible. Maybe cause it sounds like bab rock and amma rock baby.

Timeless classic

One of the greatest rock & roll bands in history was founded by two Dutch guys and a couple of dudes they met in California as kids. That's Van Halen. 80's hair metal was irritating attempts to chase Eddie Van Halen; Van Halen the band was almost irritating but saved because of how good Eddie was. If you got sick of 80's pop-metal ("hair" metal) or the swaggeringly overt misogyny that much of rock became, I get it. But this is the grand stele amid the ancient town square from which that dubious movement proceeded. Somewhere buried in this fountain of joyous noise is the blues, but you'll have to dig for it a little (Ice Cream Man aside). Michael Anthony plays a lovely, melodically and harmonically interesting bass while meshing solidly with his rhythm counterpart. Alex Van Halen is a seriously underrated rock drummer -- pretty restrained on this record, but he'd confound a generation of musicians with his intro to 1984's Hot For Teacher. "Diamond" David Lee Roth is a quintessential, prototypical, hypersexual rock frontman (100% wishes he was Freddie), complete with both a raspy belting timbre and frequent falsetto screams and moans. They all owe immensely to their predecessors (let's just say all of Led Zeppelin, for concision's sake, even if they're all more interesting than that). I spent a paragraph talking about everyone else so that there'd be time for Edward Van Halen alone. Eddie heard everyone else in the 60s and 70s -- Jimmy Page, Brian May, Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix -- mastered their techniques, got bored and added Paganini to create something that was wholly novel and iconic. Eddie was famous for his two-hand fretboard tapping (which he may have first heard from Les Paul), but his ability to produce wide bends, huge dive-bombs, sweep picking sections and at-will harmonics were remarkable because of how smoothly and musically he integrated them. Van Halen didn't write groundbreaking songs (or You Really Got Me, at all) in terms of structure or harmonics or content or anything like that. They wrote songs that sounded like the Kinks (or literally were the Kinks) or maybe Delta blues but were simultaneously way, way heavier than Deep Purple. And some short dude with a cigarette behind his guitar's nut was doing musical stunts in the background with a fluidity that would make Carlos Santana blush. You should listen to this album because other bands spent a whole decade trying to be as cool as this and in the end, they got so irritating with their imitations that rock did a full reset with grunge. People (mostly other dudes) tried so, so hard to play guitar solos as good as Eddie's that the grunge kids banned guitar solos altogether for the duration of the 90s. Eddie was so good that it fucked everybody else up. I could go on longer about how this is the other side of the 80s (though this is 1978, still) -- no synths in sight until Eddie writes Jump -- or about how gorgeous their harmonies actually are, but there's little point. This is a solidly B-tier nationwide touring band and a 2- or 3-star album. But the guy who built the band and writes the songs happens to be an all-time great and, somehow, that format worked for Van Halen. Must listen, but 4 stars -- they changed music but they won't change your life (unless you become obsessed with playing guitar). It explains what went wrong with 80s guitar music; but Van Halen (and at least two follow ups) are actually good, by dint of the absolute colossus who carried them into glory, every night of their hard-touring life.

This was a really cool album and I greatly enjoyed it the whole way through. I was familiar with most of the songs but a couple of them were new to me. Overall, one of the best that I've been suggested on this list thus far.

4.0 - Very Good

Van Halen are one of those bands where I'm familiar with their big singles, but I've never dived into their catalogue to any degree of depth, or had much of an urge to. Well, it would seem as though I've been missing out on such a fun time. In your face, arse-shakingly catchy, serotonin-soaked bangers aren't at a premium here, and whilst the second track "Eruption" could have proved to be a pretentious venture mere minutes into the album's running time if it wasn't as good as it actually is - fortunately, the solo-ing is absurdly good. Very much enjoyed this, and will be back again.

Some pretty solid grooves. They’re even a bit doo wop? Didn’t realize what their groove was.

Awesome album, solid all the way through. The combination of Dave at the top of his showmanship with Eddie being at his best is just great

To be honest, it's a great album with some classic hits, but as a whole it's not a masterpiece.

Geez. I didn’t even like Van Halen, but I have to admit that this does what it’s setting out to do. It starts “slow” with Running With the Devil and just keeps building. It’s not my thing, but it is peak 80s hair band, so they get points for that. Also, as hair metal should be, it’s pretty fun (and not as overtly problematic as a lot of hair metal).

Fuckin iconic hell yeah love me some eddie

This album rocks

Is there a better album intro than “Running’ With the Devil” in all of rock and roll? I doubt it. This album evokes comparisons with fellow hard rockers AC/DC, whom I recently trashed in a review. I think the difference lay in Van Halen’s dynamism: David Lee Roth is a fantastic, expressive rock vocalist with crazy range, Eddie Van Halen was at the top of his game here (the riff on “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘bout Love” alone is enough to seal any deal), the rhythm section is powerful (Alex Van Halen can drum circles around AC/DC), and Ted Templeman knows the right way to treat this juggernaut is by making them sound huge and spacious. The whole thing feels like a party you’d actually like to attend, a runaway train you can’t not watch to see if it can stay on the tracks. VH never sounded quite this good again.

Better than expected, and various

Kinda mid songwriting but the guitar is godly

Huge guitars with complicated solos and memorable riff blend together perfectly with great vocals to create a typical glam sound ypu want to listen to with the volume cranked up all the way. Cool kinks cover. Aint talkin about love riff is just iconic. Not in love with the ice cream man. Great, straight forward rock record!

Lots of hits. Great guitar tome

Definitely have a greater appreciation for Van Halen after listening. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Classic Van Halen some good songs mixed in with long guitar solos and some screeching.

Drop the needle and the weekend materialises. Several riffs here, like on every VH album, that other guitarists can only dream of writing. Big, dumb, perfect.

Nice!!

I do like the vibes overall, but it's hard to say any one song stuck with me that well... Except I'm the One, which is deeply amusing to me

Gritty 70s cock rock in its prime. Has the massive, anthemic sound of 80s arena rock but still with all the grit of 70s hard rock - the best of both worlds. Plus, obviously Eddie Van Halen was a prodigious talent on guitar. The album is definitely frontloaded, with the weirdly country-inflected "Ice Cream Man" starting off a bit of a lowlight, but this is still an incredibly solid debut record.

Van Halen cooks some absolute guitar riff wizardry here. If Electric Ladyland hadn't come up earlier on the list, this is what I would have imagined Hendrix to sound like. I debated giving this a 5, but I'm not sure how well it's gonna stick with me long-term. I'm 3 listens in, and I can only really recall You Really Got Me. That said, I do know what to put on when I want to hear some sick riffs in the future. Standouts: You Really Got Me • Jamie's Crying • On Fire

It rocks! The first half is an undeniable 5 but it slows down enough in the second half that I had to knock it down to a 4. The run of the first five or so songs is one of the best in rock.

I expected to dislike this. I read a lot of guitar literature where everyone just goes on and on about van Halen. I'm quite contrary and that didn't help, but also I feel his guitar tone is over rated and although he may have been the first to play the fast tapping style guitar in metal he was surpassed by later players. Furthermore that guitar solo in jump is pants and totally unnecessary in a keyboard based song. So I've never really taken much notice of them... But actually, this was a lot of fun. It was very enjoyable, the tracks were catchy and they weren't taking themselves too seriously. I liked it much more than I thought I would.

Some really good energy all the way through and concise. 4 stars

7.5/10. Eddie Van Halen goated musician.

Fun stuff from Van Halen. Their debut album is one of those places where, culturally, you can hear a transition to an 80s rock sound starting to happen. It got a little samey for my tastes toward the end (although Ice Cream Man was a nice break-up of the usual sound).

I don't know many Van Halen songs, but I consider them the final boss of dad rock. But hey, let's see! First track is a nice rock song! But I have to say, if you're going to mention the Devil, the song better blow my mind, and it doesn't. But it's good. The solo towards the end elevates it. This instrumental second track's good! And You Really Got Me is a banger, best track so far. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love keeps the streak going! I'm The One is so fast it feels like the band's in a hurry. Like the dialogue. And the last-minute barbershop quartet moment is out of left field but fits in nicely. Really like it! Jamie's Cryin' is a bit slower than previous tracks but still rocks on, and damn is it fun. The chorus is great, and by the end of the song you're singing along to it. Atomic Punk is fun but doesn't stand out. The same can be said for the track after that. Third track in a row to be kind of uninspired :( Oh yey a blues-inspired song. I was going to say the rest of the track is pretty similar to the rest of the album, and while that is still true, I actually like it here. While I like the vocals on the closer, I feel like I started getting tired of the sound of the album a couple tracks back. I have to say, this album may have cured my prejudice against 70's dad rock! I really enjoyed this! However, not all is positive. The songs are very similar, as both the instrumentals and the vocals are executed the same throughout most songs. Because of this, the album feels very repetitive. No track here is bad, but they suffer from being included in the same album. Maybe further listens will help separate the tracks and make me appreciate them more individually, but for now that's it. So yeah, this was good, and worth a listen, even if none of the songs are life-changing good. Bye

I know understand why they were rock gods.

My favorite van Halen album so far, but I don't think it's a 5 for me

This slapped pretty damn hard. Hugh four. Man Eddie could rip!!!

8/10 tipycal album my dad would play on a car ride

Solid album

Nearly every song on here is a banger with a few exceptions just pure happy energy

Thought some of the songs were by Aerosmith.

Was pretty good

More fun rock n roll

Fun cd with quite a few of their greatest hits!

Golden Rock!

Great album.

Awesome classic rock.

I’m admittedly not the biggest Van Halen fan but this hit pretty hard this morning. There’s no denying the talent here.

There was a very funny cluster of dudes in 9th grade who competed on how many guitar notes they could play per second. For them, the Messiah of Shred was Eddie Van Halen. Listening to him obliterate the fretboard throughout this album, I can understand why. Super fun record. Surprisingly singable! Runnin’ with the Devil, Feel Your Love Tonight, and Ice Cream Man were my highlights.

A fun time throughout, almost a 5 for me

In middle school I remember trying to find music that sounded like real Rock Music. As in music created by “rock stars”. The music my parents listened to (Beatles, Neil Young, etc) didn’t sound like that. Then I found Van Halen (and Motley Crue and KISS and the hair metal scene). I had finally found it.

It was good! Not what I expected.

nice album!

Quando abri o site e li "Van Halen" eu ja revirei os olhos. Me deu flashbacks da enxaqueca que AC/DC havia me causado um tempo atras. Sim, o disco Highway to Hell me causou dor fisica! A diferenca ta no som. Os tons da guitarra são crocantes, sólidos, e a voz do vocalista não é torturante! No final das contas, o album acabou me agradando bastante. Uma boa surpresa pra iniciar a semana. 4/5

Lots of hits on this album. Doesn’t sound like a 1970s album. Michael Anthony is an underrated bass player.

Just a classic metal album. NEED A BEER

A absolute ripper of a debut album. They came out the gate with tons of rock’n’roll swagger, an outrageous and lecherous lead singer in David Lee Roth, and a generational guitar talent in Eddie Van Halen. It’s an addictive onslaught. I love their cover of “You Really Got Me” and “Ain’t Talkin Bout Love” is maybe my favorite Van Halen song. I loved this album at 14, and I still really enjoy it forty years later. Knocked down from a 5 because of a couple of weaker songs.

Kicked ass while working on my car

There’s a reason the first four tracks are super well known, they are an excellent way to start the album. The guitar on Eruption and continuing into You Really Got Me is excellent. Love the frenetic energy, particularly the kick drum, on I’m The One. The guitar and drum sections sound very familial, but that speaks to the impact of this record on future musicians.

Liked this a lot more than I thought I would. Still a bit bored by the end though.

Guitar rock isn't really my jam, but this album pretty much rules. Plus...The Kinks. And that intro to "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love"…

i love it when the artists' first albums are just hits after hits after hits

-All of the electric guitar parts are played well by EVH -Album wasn't insanely influential in the same way as others from then -A lot of the music feels very similar -Best Songs: Runnin' With The Devil, Eruption, On Fire -Worst Songs: I'm the One, Atomic Punk, Ice Cream Man -Overall Rating: 8.3/10

Respect the guitar. Some hits on here.

top songs: you really got me, eruption, little dreamer, ain't talking about love peak guitar playing

Revolutionary

Eruption…if all the rest were stinkers, the album still would have at least 3 stars!

So another van halen album generated precisely a week after I got 1984? Fine. It’s a 4. And yes, Eruption, along with stairway to heaven and comfortably numb, MUST be in the great Rock’n’Roll songbook for their solos. 4/5

good one

Couple of clunkers but not enough to drop it too low.

Lots of fun. Let's go drinking

Eddie's guitar solos are juste something else. A great representation of real hard rock. -1 for "Ice Cream Man" though so 8/10. fav songs : Atomic Punk & On Fire

Solid. Love the energy.

its 80s rock from the 70s, that's got to count for something fun album

Damn, that Guitar-Solo in Eruption. Really cool. Ain't talkin bout love is also really cool.

An amazing force this is. Incredible sound and the quality of production. A must!

It’s nice to listen to this album knowing what kind of history this band had in front of them. The album rocks, and is true Van Halen. Great record.

i like van halen yay this is top tier dad music

Fun, great guitar, and not gross (lyrically) unlike many classic rock musicians of the time.

I like it :) It is indeed peak "dad music", but that shouldn't hold it back. Technical guitar fun :)

I saw somebody say Eruption should have been the opener and I AGREE SO MUCH. Would have been soooo good. I really love albums with instrumental openers... Slayer's Repentless, Testament's The Formation of Damnation, The Cure's Seventeen Seconds... and the instrumental opener on 1984 by Van Halen is probably my favourite track on that album The guitar tone here is also SO GOOD. Like OMGGGG the You Really Got Me intro RAHHHHH. So crunchy but also... it sounds wet?? If that makes sense??? I like that combo a lot

I wish my dad had played me this when I was a kid

More fun and bizarre than I was expecting. Doo-wop breakdowns followed by "Panama" kept me on my toes.

Atomic Punk FTW

Ok riffs but corny harmonies

I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. When it got picked, I thought I’d rate it a 2 maybe 3 stars at best. But, for a debut album, it was a really nice foreshadowing of what was to come. Clocking in at an economical time less than 36 mins, we experience the genius that is Eddie on guitar, and coupled with David Lee Roth’s playboy antics and howls, there isn’t a wasted minute here. Consider me “re fanned”.

classic

Ya... There's a reason people think Eddie is a guitar god.

Thoughts before listening: I used to think I hated Van Halen. I mean I knew EVH was an amazing guitarist, but their music is cheesy and David Lee Roth is more showman than incredible singer. However, I have explored their albums past the hits, and found there to be more depth than I originally thought. I'm glad to get a chance to listen to this today. Review: This is better than I thought it was going to be, and the best songs are the album cuts. Sure the hits are iconic, but for my money, "Atomic Punk" and "I'm the One" are the best songs here. EVH"s guitar playing is on point throughout the album and DLR hasn't gone full blown cheeseball yet (although "Ice Cream Man" is a sign of things to come). I've always associated VH with the worst side of cheesy 80s metal, and while they certainly were a major influence on bands like Poison, this debut album proves that there was more to them than the party anthems that would soon follow. 4-stars

A very good listen! I admittedly didn't know Van Halen as well as I thought. They aren't as hard as the "hard rock" name would suggest but they have their moments. It sounds like they're having fun and that appeals to me. The doo-wop breakdown is top tier. I can see why they're so successful and why this album is on this list. That said, it gets a little same sound at a point. The guitar sound is unique and played well enough to excuse it though.

Хороший альбом. "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" шедевр на все времена

When I reviewed 1984, I said it was probably the highest rating I’d ever give to what I called “big penis rock.” Now, honestly I’m going to retract that. While I’m still not a massive fan of the style, the energy on this album is palpable and you do get a sense that they were uncovering something new by making hard rock so glitzy and shiny and over-the-top. So, sure. I’ll give this one a higher rating and a must-listen designation (#125 for me).

I like it but small doses only

Big 80s rock. I don’t think I can name a Van Halen song that did not appear on this album. This is what I think of.

Q if you would have asked my 17 yr old self in 1978 when this came out what I thought of this - I would have given it 5 stars. But now 47 yrs later Roth’s schtick is a little grating at times so it gets knocked down 2 stars. Eddie playing though raised it back up another star!

Really good album, it would probably be a 5 but I don’t like their cover of You Really Got Me

Oh, well that’s a surprise it seems I actually still like Van Helen. Thing is I’d built up my own stereotype of what I remember them sounding like, which I didn’t give much credence to. But the 2 albums I have re listened to on here, are well just good rock and roll. Dave Lee who I just think of as clowning actually fits this well, went to the edge .. the musicians are always on point and serve the song at all times while being, well eddieVH. Great hard rock album, 4.5 Star

Classic hair metal album. There was so much of the same music coming out at the time of this album so it was definitely difficult to design any record with heavy metal riffs, catchy phrase lyrics AND be unique at the same time. VH set themselves apart with their vocal sound and, of course, the face melting guitar solos. This album crushes it for me all day. Whether I'm on my way to work or slicing another Titleist from the tee box, I'm belting RWTD.

Not my favourite genre but it's a good album.

All timer and Janice likes it

A classic sound, growly and indignant! Pisses me off that Jump! is Van Halen's most popular track, everything here is more creative and punchy.

Prochronism describes a moment when something from the future is placed in the past. And right up there alongside a baroque blockchains or rococo smartphones is Eddie Van Halen’s “Eruption” – a guitar solo that would have sounded pretty out of joint on any playlist of 1978’s most popular tracks (think Chic’s “Le Freak” into ABBA’s “Take a chance on me”). No doubt, EVH was a genius. (Perhaps, at times, too great a genius for his band’s own good – why, Mr Lee Roth, must you feel the need to compete?) It’s a struggle to find praise high enough for the guitar playing on display here, or to adequately capture the impact of Eddie’s innovations without lurching into sickly hyperbole – so instead I’ll do what we all wish David Lee Roth would do at times, and shut the fuck up.

This is a really great way to debut your kickass metal band to the world.

Great guitar riffs

Shred jams.

Never listened to VH in albums, but this one is really solid

Unexpected

The guitars on this record are insane

Haven’t listened to this in decades… Lots of great songs. Some filler though.

Straight forward, top-notch Metal and Hard Rock. A little dated, but still cool. Would have loved to train Karate to this in the 80s.

I’ve been around long enough to know who Van Halen are. I’ve heard my fair share of songs, hell, I’ve heard quite a few of these. What I haven’t done is fairly critique them. 5 songs in and I’m impressed. I never questioned Eddie’s guitar playing or Alex’s drumming. I’m not a fan of Dave’s screaming or whatever you call it. Moans? Whatever. You get it. My only knock is it tapers off with the last 4 songs. The momentum has been lost. Other than that, it’s a very passable album, just not perfect. Choice cut: Eruption

I would pass on Ice Cream Man, but other than that, solid

hell yeah

Random thoughts: * I grew up with Van Halen 1984 so it took me a good while to discover this album in the late 90s. I probably got to this album because of the Tone Loc sample. * Anyway, this is some guitar ripping stuff! * Eruption plus You Really Got Me are peak guitar rock! * Overall a solid rock album with a bit of filler at the end.

Ladies and gentlemen. I give you... Van Halen!

hell yeah brother 👊🇺🇸🔥

What a great freaking album! So many good songs! Classic songs as well! This album showcases so much of Van Halens talents and it just keeps it up the whole time!

oohh oohh ooohh jamies cryin 🗣️ e-gitarren neuron activation

Lots of bangers. Aint talkin bout love has been stuck in my head all night.

David Lee Roth screams like a mountain lion mauling an elk.

This was surprisingly good! Wasn’t expecting it! I loved the guitar, the vibes. Couple of songs weren’t my thing. The song ain’t talking bout love was great!!

Ahh, this brings back memories of sitting in my friend Bubba's rec. room spinning side 1 of this album and being blown away by Eddie Van Halen's scorching and original-sounding guitar sounds along with David Lee Roth's howling/screeching vocals! That's got to be one of the top 4 opening tracks of all time, including the innovative You Really Got Me cover. What a "We have arrived" statement this is.

RocknRollllllllll

Eruption alone could give this a 4 but Van Halen before the synth was a hell of a beast.

Lean more towards a 4.5, but since that isn’t possible, 4 it is.

A really solid first album, as classic as classic rock gets. Love the foaminess of the guitars, and most of the tracks have great momentum, as well as just good vocals. The writing isn’t necessarily poetic, but that’s not the point here I don’t think, and I liked it anyway. I did feel that it started off really well and then kinda slowed down after about the halfway point, but that’s forgiveable. Favorite track: Jamie’s Cryin’ Least Facorite Track: Atomic Punk

David Lee Roth is not a singer, thank God for Michael Anthony Nonetheless a classic album with a few iconic tracks and a blistering debut for Eddie

Lots of hits here I'd forgotten about. And I know this view is unpopular, but it's David Lee Roth as a frontman who takes late 1970s to mid-1980s Van Halen to 11.

Almost a 5

Enjoyable listen. Really made me feel like the radio was on in the machine shop at work. Not my preference necessarily, but fun to listen to.

Great energy, great sound, great band. Guitar, bass, drums, and vocals all come together pretty well. I'm a little biased just because I probably enjoy rock the most as a genre but this was a super solid album. I liked the length of it too, I felt the songs were fairly similar and because of that the shorter length prevented the sound from overstaying it's welcome. I hadn't heard some of the songs before and some were good and some were ok. I liked Feel Your Love Tonight the best.

Bello, ma mi aspettavo di più

Their most fluid and consistent record. Highly recommended for the opening track alone.

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would, but some of the original lyrics are... oof. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5

A band that has weirdly grown on me over the years as I've come to enjoy the unabashed big dumb sound and kitschy debauched style. Incredible guitar tone, epic anthems you can really pump a fist to, arena filling drums, and crazy charismatic vocals. Sometimes it's just time for uncut puro braindead fun. Ice Cream Man is an embarrassment though, wild.

Ice cream man sucked. The rest of the album was pretty great.

I may take this one for granted because I’ve heard it so many times. A great debut.

This album kinda slaps

Very good guitar riffs Catchy album Kinks cover is one of my favourites so far

Cool album! Nice listening. Classic.

Classic rock at its most classic

Never listened to them before but this was awesome. Eruption especially and it's just a guitar solo

This is a great classic.

I like Van Halen a lot. Incredible. I've read about and obviously heard how amazing of a guitar player he was and how he did so many new and innovative things. I also constantly hear about the 1984 album. I was shocked to get this album instead of 1984, and then to realize that most of the hits that I assumed were on 1984 were actually on this album. Really incredible through and through.

powerful songs and innovative guitars

Suprisingly fun, despite the self indulgent guitar work :) 70+/100

It's like exactly what is expected when we read "Van Halen" on top of the page. Nothing less and nothing more. It means that it indeed sounds a bit outdated, but still incredibly good.

Just up my street, some great guitar solos and good listening

This is pretty impressive and a really well-done record. I would go so far as to say 'inventive' as well - my knowledge of the rock landscape in 1978 is limited but it seems like this record and their next one were probably like a bomb of new rock energy and likely felt totally unexpected and new. This also has the feel of a record where the guys in the band just got along and had fun - no idea if that's true haha but def feels that way. Easy 4 approaching a 5.

I’m not much of a rocker, but I really like the older, David Lee Roth version of VH

Awesome walking around tunes for FtL

It's great, but after a while, it feels like the guitar's doing all the talking and no one else gets a word in.

Probably my favorite New Wave album I’ve listened to all the way through. As one of the creators of the genre, it’s only fitting that they do it the best. Parallel Lines doesn’t have the same punk attitude as their self-titled, but that anti-establishment flair does glimmer from time to time. 4.5/5

80s Rock with a capital R. Excellent guitar work. Debut album. Metal.

This was really good. I get why people like Van Halen and why they have such a legacy. Awesome album

Debut album with solid opener Runnin' with the Devil. Next up is Eruption, a classic. Third track is You Really Got Me, also a classic but only decent. Forth track is Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, an awesome song. The first half of this album is hit after hit. I'm the One is unremarkable. Jamie's Cryin' is another great classic. Van Halen liked to use a lot of 's in song names. Atomic Punk unremarkable; almost sounds like an Iron Maiden song. Feel Your Love Tonight and Little Dreamer are lame. Ice Cream Man is acoustic and doesn't mesh with the album at all. On Fire sucks. 4 stars for how good the classics are although the second half of the album is begging me to drop it to 3.

Classic hard rock. Everyone is great in their role - EVH's riffs are catchy and flashy and the rhythm section is as tight as can be. David Lee Roth seems like such a sleezeball but he's really entertaining. The band can be cheesy at times like on Ice Cream Man but it's in a fun, laid back and tongue-in-cheek way The album remains (mostly) consistent from front to back, switching between more laid-back tunes like Runnin' with the Devil (which is a perfect opener) and Little Dreamer, and more energetic ones like I'm the One and Atomic Punk Eruption is probably my least favourite track. I'll listen to it when I've got the whole album on, but it's never been something I've wanted to listen to in isolation. It's just too wanky and over the top; it kind of just passes me by without me really taking it in. There's a fine line for me with technicality, as I do love many prog bands, but here it's too much. I much prefer when solos like that are built into and enhance a full song Not my favourite Van Halen album (that's probably Van Halen II or 1984), but it's a classic for a reason Highlights: Runnin' with the Devil, I'm the One, Atomic Punk

not a huge Van Halen fan, first time listening to the album end to end and found my self listening to it twice, lets go!. alot of radio play tunes so knew most of em but didnt realize some many of those hits were on a single album. I could do without the Atomic Punk and those epic but over done screeches from David "Screech" Roth.

Its a fine album, not one that I love, but understand its position as influential in the following decade. 7/10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrFxKY6aFrQ

this is what they used to prescribe for low T in the 70s

Good to the point where I resent it being the casting mould for a million others that weren't.

7/10 The first half of this album permanently altered (or disfigured, depends on who you ask) the face of Rock music. Second half is alright. *plays the sickest air guitar solo you’ve ever seen in your life*

A very decent album. Surprised it was in the 70's as I always assumed all the many songs I knew from this album were in the 80's. A good, solid album.

the first song is good I didn't really listen to it though. the second song is also good its hard to explain. the third song is still good I like the way the drums sound and the guitar sounds. the fourth song is good I've heard it before and I like it.

super fun and awesome guitar work. good shit

I love David Lee Roth era Van Halen so much better than Sammy Hagar era, despite the Hagar era pushing them to new heights. To me, David Lee Roth just sounds like Van Halen. This album just does it for me. Great guitars, DLR's screams. I just eat it up. I like 1984 more than this album, but I can't deny how good this first release was.

Ya know, honestly I didn’t have a problem with this! It’s one of those albums where most of the tracks are hits. The production and (obviously) the guitar playing is fantastic. It’s a tight 35 minutes! It’s fun! I was surprised at how much Beach Boys I was hearing in some of those tight harmonies!!! This is a really great classic rock album, and I think you should listen to it!

Hardrock, exzellentes Gitarrenspiel

This Van Halen debut album exudes a raw energy and excitement, full of wild wailing guitar riffs, loud and chaotic drumming, and David Lee Roth's vocals, where nothing is beholden to any pre-existing formula or sound - all in the best possible ways. The album carries a punk spirit, and Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing established the benchmark (and model) for hard rock music into the 80s and beyond. Notable tracks include "Running With the Devil," "You Really Got Me," and the guitar work showcased in "Atomic Punk." Their rendition of John Brim's "Ice Cream Man" is particularly interesting as they shift from a more conventional acoustic blues riff into their distinctive Van Halen sound midway through the track. As the 1980s progressed, Van Halen began to lose some of that raw intensity, becoming more predictable and almost a caricature of their original sound, especially following their transition to Van Hagar. This remains an exceptional debut album.

Great album with a A-side that's a lot better than the B-side. Classic hard rock

Two brothers who didn't play around. Not the first or most influential glam, arena rock, etc band of the time, but Eddie's guitar skills are unmatched, much like Hendrix a decade before. While the albums after this one can be a mixed bag as a whole, this one doesn't let up for a second and is the kind of debut you want to hear. Running With the Devil is a solid start, but always felt like Eruption/You Really Got Me would have made a bigger statement for the band's debut, and the riffs across every track show he was a step above his contemporaries in play, while still writing songs with a blend of catchy hooks and technical prowess.

I was surprised how much of this is just hard rock blues. It's great!

In my callow youth I dismissed EVH as a bunch of flash with no heart. I think I was wrong. And David Lee Roth is a hell of a frontman and lyricist. Love the falsetto ad libs. My love is rotten to the core!

Not a huge Van Halen fan but this album is a classic.

The first half of this album is amazing. The second half is fine to good, but no where near as good as the first half. Some true classics on this record.

Most of the songs are so good. Guitar goes crazy, but atomic punk and on fire are kind of bad

Before listening: I'm only familiar with Van Halen's hits, there are bands from this era that I actively listen to way more, so I'm curious about what their debut is like. After: For a debut rock album, this is pretty solid, usually it takes a few to find a decent set of tracks. The band are clearly very talented, but I don't think they'll ever be one of my favourites, which is ok. Overall a good time.

Great album, but not my type of music. I wouldn't like to listen to it a second time

A classic, so many good songs and riffs are on here. It's a shame that such talented musicians didn't pursue a more complex and interesting style of music. But that was their choice and they made a mark all the same, perhaps reaching greater mainstream popularity as is. The riffs and the tone are out of this world. Eddie really transformed what people thought was possible to do on a guitar. The drums are also pretty tight on this. The lyrics and themes are lacking a bit, they are close to the classic 80s vibe.

There are rock gods and then there is Eddie Van Halen, who stands atop the pantheon. Diamond Dave>Sammy Hagar

Great first album by a legendary band. Not my favorite as far as rock goes but definitely a great one.

I could see doing coke to this.

rock com muita guitarra, riffs cortantes e muita distorção principalmente nas primeiras músicas

here is my first one. liked it more than I expected. fav songs: you really got me ain’t talkin ‘bout love Jamie’s cryin’ little dreamer 🔥🔥🔥

Classic. Still rocks

Legendary band

Great album. Tons of rocking fun. Loved it

Amazing. Would listen to every week. Cultural important. One of the most remembered guitar riffs.

Lekker rock album. Niks buitengewoons, maar wel gewoon goed

probably about as good as anything in this genre is going to be for me. im not crazy about this era of rock but i really liked this album a lot because the riffs are catching and not too annoying and all the instruments sound great together; it feels like every member is playing at their absolute best and it doesnt seem like any of them are playing at a level below any of the others.

I have not listened to Van Halen on purpose. This was very solid. Runnin with the Devil is a great opener and the guitar on the album is what I would have expected from Eddie Van Halen. Really a great album and I was surprised that it was their debut

Pretty solid hard rock/glam metal album. Not the most interesting or different, but enjoyed this overall. Highlight being 'Little Dreamer'. Few minus points for including cover tracks.

Eruption made me bust

35 mins of straight fire

This is not my style of music but can’t deny this is some dumb fun 70s rock. This is the band I wish Led Zeppelin sounded like Very surprised I liked it , this may be a guilty pleasure but it’s damn catchy and Eddie can play and Mr Lee Roth has a voice I don’t hate 4/5
