Reviews (page 3 of 13)

Did I listen to this album on repeat all Sunday afternoon? Yes. Yes I did. I felt like I wanted to host a barn dance and just loop this album the entire time I had no idea Elvis's old songs were this good I made myself dizzy dancing to some of these absolute bangers My fave was one of the slow ones tho- I love you just because ♡

I was raised on Elvis, early rock n roll, country, and R&B, so this is something I've been looking forward to. His early stuff is wonderfully sappy, fun, and saucy. He perfected that country-rock twang & rhythm. I love Elvis & listen to his music fairly often. Did he exploit black music & musicians? Probably. Or is it homage to black music? Something to think about. The album cover is so iconic, The Clash copied it for London Calling. I'm listening to this on repeat for a while - it's that flippin good. I look forward to more Elvis.

He looks so hot on the cover. Young, sexy Elvis singing with all his passion. Yum! Sign me up. Thematically, this album is giving me whiplash. There's some classic covers, sure. But then you've got tender love songs that Elvis emotes so touchingly followed by ruthless, you-can-get-the-fuck-out break up songs. It can be quite jarring as a listening experience. He broke so many rules to pave the way for true rock n roll. What it comes down to is two things: he looks good and I’d bang him.

Great album from the start of rock'n'roll!

I happen to love Elvis. I do. I love the way he sings, the songs he selects, and the personnel on many of his records, including this one. Scotty Moore is such a great guitarist. Bill Black is wonderful too. Very cool that Chet Atkins plays on a couple of these tracks. Elvis' early work, like this debut album, is just fantastic. The energy, the performances...it's all so good. Even if you're not a fan of Elvis, if you do like rock music, I strongly encourage listening to Andrew Hickey's podcast, A History Of Rock Music In 500 Songs. Start at Episode 1 and go in order from there. I promise it's worth it. Absolutely worth it. And keep on rockin', Elvis.

- Great dance rock vibes - Beautiful vocals - A nice swift 28 minutes - Favorite songs: Blue Suede Shoes, One-Sided Love Affair, Tutti Frutti, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You)

Great album that defines Elvis. Many great songs

Every time I get an Elvis album my expectations are always so much lower than they should be, to the point I almost dread listening. But then as soon as it comes on I'm absolutely blown away. The man was so incredibly talented. Only just recently watch the Baz Lurhman flick too which helps, I really hope his life wasn't as sad as it's made out to be and if it's to be believed I really wish we could've seen what Elvis was capable of creatively without the constraints of Vegas and his C word manager. Also Blue Moon is straight up psychedelic.

❤️

First time with this 3rd album, more familiar with the first two. Very different and moody, but also very good.

I've recently watched the biopic Elvis from 2022 and really really enjoyed learning about his life and music. I already had a lot of love for this album but it's so fun to listen again fully since watching the film. I find Elvis' start in show business so amazing and inspiring and think this is very impressive for a debut album. When I think of where he came from and where his inspiration came from and how he fought the pressure from conservative Americans to water down his music and personality, I feel all fired up and inspired and emotional haha! And oh ma Gadddd Elvis' voice in unmatched in its field if that makes sense hahaha. Love an album that can make me feel this much. Also there is great variety and originality in this album. Love the diversity of dynamics throughout. I really appreciate the album artwork which is very cool too. Highlights for me are Trying to Get to You and I Got a Woman and Money Honey also Blue Moon ugh, incredible tracks!!!

The beginning of the legend.

Really Really dig it

Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Blue suede shoes, I’m counting on you, I got a woman, Just because, Tutti frutti, Trying to get you, Money honey

He had a really great voice! He went out on a limb singing the kind of music that he loved. He changed the course of popular music at the time, rather he opened the flood gates. The songs on this album are great, enjoyable songs. There is really no filler. And because of all this it deserves a solid 5.

Tutti Frutti, I have to rate it 5 stars

"Blue Suede Shoes" is my impression of Elvis Presley, the classic ever.

Well, he is after all known as the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll”. Music was different back in the 1950’s and it’s evident Elvis set the world on fire with this record, even though it could be seen as boring by contemporary standards.

Amazing

Lively and lovely. Love classical style of Presley. Got some inspiration from lyrics.

It still holds up - most tracks are top 10 stuff. 5/5

By far the best Elvis album.

Can you imagine what this felt like at the time? Still amazing.

What a great artist and this is a collection of some of my favourites by Elvis.

This is rather timely for me, seeing as how the Elvis biopic is coming out soon (or is out? I don't know, I only keep tabs on arthouse films). It had to be him. You know how things were in the 50s when it came to nascent rock and roll. The prime originators of the genre, who happened to be Black, wouldn't get the most out of the notoriety that Elvis put forth. So he had to be the blueprint. Rock and roll had to be molded in his image and it's an image that still captivates in these two centuries, from album cover on down. Sure, the songs are all covers but there is also conviction and purpose and Elvis had that in spades. If it wasn't for this album, who knows how the next several years would turn out. Maybe it'd be dismal, maybe nothing would change. We'll never know because the path forward only takes less than thirty minutes.

Classic

Swinging great tunes, massive historical impact, know they're all covers but what music isn't? 4.6

This is the king of rock'n'roll. I've got this album: nice album! Here he makes some covers, great covers. And all the songs are very good.

Love Elvis, most songs are covers but we knew that. Still a classic

The King's début! It's an artifact as much as entertainment. And it is entertaining. The intro to Blue Suede Shoes is maybe one of my favorite album openers, ever. Love this song. "One-Sided Love Affair" is a new favorite. "Tutti Fruitti" is an old favorite. It's true that part of my love for this album is as a historical document, but I do love this music!

Amazing artwork. Obviously. Hope the music’s as good.

This album is one of my favorites!

Шикарный альбом, никогда до этого не слушал Короля альбомами

Elvis Presley is very good

The King! this is a must own record

Already familiar. Love it.

Disco referencial. La primera piedra del mito sustentada en rock&roll primigenio. Obra maestra por el impacto, por el momento y por las formas.

Viagem no tempo musical.

Album histórico e extremamente importante. Destaque para: Blue Suede Shoes, I'm Counting on You e Trying to get to You. Dá pra ouvir muito de Beatles nas duas últimas

I can appreciate this, but I have to be in the right mood for it.

This was genuinely a ton of fun. It's his debut album, so he's like 21 on this record. Listening to it, it started to hit me: no wonder all the ladies fell for this guy, he probably got all the 1950s housewives actually aroused for the first time in years. He genuinely has an incredible voice and presence, sure he's a marketing and industry success story, but the foundation had to be there to build on.

Elvis Presley – Elvis Presley (1956) On Day 193, I finally sat down with a full-length project from an artist I've liked for a long time. Back when I first subscribed to Spotify, Elvis was among the first artists I would play most of the time, though until today, I had only ever heard his tracks scattered across various playlists. It felt ironic that my first full LP experience ended up being his debut album. The record is great and serves as a solid introduction to his early work, though as a long-time but grounded admirer, I felt like that definitive "sauce" I was expecting from him was yet to fully come. While "Blue Suede Shoes" was the only track I completely knew before today, I actually ended up liking "One-Sided Love Affair" much more. It delivers a great, slow-burning blues groove that hits on the exact shades of his style that made me a fan of his work in the first place. The album is highly consistent with numerous highlights, including "I'm Counting on You," "I Love You Because," "Trying to Get to You," and the atmospheric finish of "Blue Moon - Take 9/M." A thoroughly solid 4/5.

Elviksen levyt on letkeää kuunneltavaa ja tälläkin oli paljon hyviä biisejä.

yeah classic, although not the best collection of his songs

Rock'n'Roll und Elvis-Schnulzen

Understandable how this was the coolest shit anybody had ever seen back in 56, but it just doesn't effect the withered gen z brain the same. Classic nonetheless

OG Presley was soooo good!

Interesting listening to this with 70 years(!!!) of hindsight. How does it stack up to modern sensibilities about a white guy covering black musicians and seeing more wealth and fame from their music than they did? It's a really good album. Those black artists deserved better than they got, but Elvis still deserves his fame. The covers respect the source and take the music in a unique direction. When I listened to the Rolling Stones debut album, it was *all* bland covers of black music. Doing what the original songs did, but only half as well. I won't say Elvis is better than Ray Charles or Little Richard, but he is different. Yeah, it's more palatable to a white audience, but... that's not Elvis' fault. It's the fault of the culture at the time. Arguably, Elvis helped spread the music of the black artists he admired to an audience that never would have listened to them. I don't know. It's complicated.

Peak Elvis

Absolutely an artist you must hear before you die.

Huge for its time, but at 28 minutes, it still feels like it has a lot of filler. Still a good album. Rating: 7/10 Favorite Song: I’m counting on you, blue suede, tutti fruitti

You do kind of have to give it to Elvis I generally find

Good time rockabilly

I think I'm horny for Elvis and I think that's the point

money, honey

I rate this album, the production is clear for the era and the songs are all great party starters and who can deny Elvis’ voice and sex appeal.

So weird to hear early Elvis and how much he sounded like the typical 50s music in places. Loved this version of Blue Moon.

favs: blue suede shoes, tutti frutti, i'm gonna sit right down and cry (over you)

no czy ja wiem takie spoko i nic wiecej niekore piosenki pewnie bym przeskipowala jakbym uslyszala w radiu tak miedzy 3 a 4 ale bywaly gorsze na 3 wiec moze byc i 4

Hey this guy is like Eminem but for rock and roll. (not true. Eminem never made a cover album)

Solid album with good covers

I had already heard this album prior to listening. It has a nice mix of rock and roll and country-influenced rockabilly. His voice is great and his presence is apparent. It is no mystery why he became a huge star. This is a very good album and I would listen again for sure.

Símbolo.

Saltine cracker of an album. Digestible and won’t get you wound up, for better or for worse. 3.5

A hugely important album in the history of western music, and rightfully appears in this list -- regardless of how tired & formulaic some of the songs may feel 70+ years later. Also the whole cultural appropriation thing AKA "hot white guy popularizes burgeoning genre created by African Americans for the white masses". I say that as as a white guy myself - his cover of "Tutti Frutti" doesn't hold a candle to Little Richard. Hot take, I'm sure. But I'll still give the King credit; guy was an amazing singer and a killer showman. Album perfectly encapsulates how rock n roll came in like a tidal wave for audiences in the 50s.

All though I'm not a big Elvis fan, I can still appreciate his work and what he did for rock n roll. The album itself had some really good songs and I enjoyed listening to it and it's the first time I've actually listened to an Elvis album and not just individual songs.

Pretty solid Elvis album. 4.5

It's not nearly as good as his non-album singles around the same timeframe, but this album is actually way more solid than I remembered. On the slow songs, everything else sometimes gets drowned out by all that echo on his voice, but the uptempo rockers all hold up better than his present-day reputation would suggest. Plus, his backing band just sounds *great* most of the time, especially if you're someone who likes folk punk or the Violent Femmes or whatever else gives you a combination of acoustic guitars and fast tempos. There are people these days who will talk about Elvis like he's Pat Boone or something, but this album isn't a watered-down version of anything. Like sure, his version of "Tutti Frutti" is more restrained than Little Richard's, but Little Richard was always one of the least restrained rock singers so that's not really a knock against Elvis here.

This is one of those albums where it’s hard to remember how groundbreaking it actually was. These days it sounds quite tame but back in the day it was shocking and new, for that alone it deserves to be on the list

Excelente álbum de puro talento analógico, totalmente recomendable

Maybe not my favorite Elvis album, but can’t deny the feelings that come with every song I hear by him. Reminds me instantly of my grandfather. I’ll take more of those memories any day.

Pretty good album I'd say 4/5 probably early birth of rock

I can’t tell if I’m biased by a lifetime of exposure, but I was just really impressed by the execution of this album. Extremely solid.

I have never taken Elvis seriously in any way (and I didn't get the London Calling joke) but the documentary from the salt mine made me appreciate his talent and charm, and while I fully appreciate the racist roots of his success, he is by no means alone in that. But listening to this, and knowing how groundbreaking it was, I am struck by how mild it really is; there are several straight-up crooner ballads here along with the rock & roll ragers. It's kind of shocking how threatening this bunch of tunes was. I'm giving it a 4 for shaking things up, although this album is nothing special.

Yeah it makes total sense why this guy was as famous as he was. Also pretty crazy to think these songs were the HITS of this era. Crazy how far we’ve come musically and also how timeless these tunes are.

The one that started it all. Respect.

Clearly fun to listen to. I probably won’t go back to listen again, but I can appreciate where this came from and where it stands in music history.

Can't argue with the king of rock n roll.

It’s Elvis. Full of hits. I’m not going to deny the originals did them better, especially looking at you Tutti-Frutti, but a good time. 4/5

3.5 really

Some of the vocal acrobatics are silly

Yllättävän menevä 70 vuotta vanhaksi albumiksi, aika ajaton albumi

Good stuff. Definitely impactful.

Il est fort mais c'est un connard.

Bet this blew peoples minds in the 50s

Fuckin rock and roll baby!!! Timeless sound but obviously hard to compare to other albums that took the blueprint and ran with it. Long live the King

Early Swinging Elvis is the Very Important Artist but as time goes by I find myself partial to Tortured Fat Elvis. Pills and blubber apparently help a voice age. Go and google Fat Elvis singing Bridge Over Troubled Water live in Vegas or Hawaii or some other 1970s Lounge Lizard Mecca. Unbeatable. Also I'm going to kill myself if I ever hear the phrase cultural appropriation again

Overall: 7/10 This is a very raw album, and I get the feeling most of these covers were done better by other people (the ones I know I can pretty much gaurantee that), but man, Elvis had such a great voice and he was one of the most charismatic people to ever exist. Unfotunately, the man did take black music and watered it down for a white audience. In a way I would say that's not entirely bad, since that music is now enjoyed by a wide range of people. On the other hand, the credit should really go to the people who made it in the first place. In any case, I do think Elvis becoming popular was a positive for pop culture, and I enjoy listening to this album. Fav Song: Trying to Get to You

You might think this one is included here only for historical reasons, but listening to it today, well, the music itself is great. Elvis was one of a kind performer, and an incredible singer. He has the ability of swinging and crooning, both in a natural way. The band is great. I really appreciate the way this album is organized. Feels intentional, not just a bunch of songs. As you can guess, I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. Long live Elvis, may his legacy be remembered as it should. A solid 4

Including a classic 50s Elvis album on this list is tough because the most radical, world-changing songs were all released as singles in the Sun days. You get some hints of that sound and style here, but there's also plenty to remind you that Elvis was a balladeer at heart, not just some perverse hip shaker. The Ray Charles and Little Richard songs are definite downgrades from the originals, but overall this is just a good rockabilly record.

Super fun ! Bring good energy, like in a club in the 60s

The easy comparison is From Elvis in Memphis — the mature, evolved Elvis who earned a five by proving he could still grow after years of creative stagnation. This is the opposite end of the story: a 21-year-old from Tupelo detonating popular music with a fusion of country, blues, and R&B that genuinely hadn’t existed before and wouldn’t stop reverberating for decades. The record is mostly covers, which puts it in similar territory to the Dusty Springfield debut reviewed just before it. The difference is that Elvis wasn’t just interpreting songs — he was colliding genres with a physicality and conviction that created something new in the collision. You can hear the catalyst quality clearly, the sense that the music is about to escape the room entirely and take everything with it. Is it a fully realized record by the standards of what he’d eventually become? No. The raw edges and the unevenness are real, and some tracks feel more like proof of concept than finished statements. But proof of concept that rewired an entire culture earns its place in the score. The trailblazing aspect is audible rather than just historical — which is the distinction that pushes this to a four rather than a respectful three. Some records matter because of what they launched. This one sounds like the launch itself.

I understand how good this is. Really. I can hear Elvis dancing.

It's wild that this album is 70 years old.

pretty good album! felt really consistent and it didn't feel boring. it wasnt my thing but it was enjoyable nonetheless

I was really hoping I would be able to do some kind of gotcha! by liking the original versions of these songs more, but this was actually very good. RIP Elvis Presley, sorry I wanted to be an asshole

I listened to this album on my lunch break, driving to go get McDonald's. I had a lot of reservations going into this album, with Elvis Presly being the prime example of a white artist becoming incredibly successful by performing black music, but that cynical push for palatability is more on the label than it is on Elvis himself, especially this early in his career. His performances of these songs are genuinely musically transformative, and his charisma as a singer and performer is undeniable. Now to be fair, some of the songs don't hold a candle to the originals and just made me want hear those original versions (I Got a Woman and Tutti Frutti), but there is a boyish naive charm to many of the songs, even if it gets jarring to hear him sing in a higher register occasionally on this album. The percussion on this album routinely sounds like a train rolling down a track, which mostly works, though sometimes leaves me feeling like the band is just playing too fast for me to hold onto anything. There are also some moments where Elvis sounds like he's trying a little too hard with the vocals, leading them to cut in and out at an annoying rate. But even aside from the traits of his performances which I have pong heard heralded, I also appreciated the presence of some weirdly low-key and unconventional songs, specifically Blue Moon. I wound up finding a lot more to enjoy here than I ever would have expected; I've gotta give the man his flowers, he really was a hell of a performer. Highlights: Blue Suede Shoes, I'm Counting on You, I Love You Because, Trying to Get to You, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You), I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin'), Blue Moon (Take 9/M)

8. Nothing I was waiting to be over, not my typical genre but very easy listens. Not really adding anything to my playlist from it, but would listen again

Blue Suede shoes is a ridiculous song but actually some of this rules. The guitar solo on "Just Because" rips. "I got a woman" is solid. Yes he didn't write any of the songs and he's repackaging Black art for a white audience, but you don't get a record that sounds like this one accident. Dude could sing.

i like elvis a lot. he really does just have a lovely voice.

RCA studio Debut Elvis

spoko elwis buja nie ma chuja we wsi na takie granie

Quite good album from 1956.

The birth of rock and roll for white people. Elvis never wrote a song and never used original material, but he knew what was great and brought it to the airwaves and radio waves.

His debut album shows his talent and potential

I think this is Elvis‘s first album and it’s pretty clear by his voice. It’s not yet fully developed. Not every song is catchy, but there are times when it’s clear that the song needed a more powerful voice this just ain’t it still good though.

classic

The beginnings of something new, that is very old.

Who doesn’t like a bit of Elvis. Funky and upbeat songs, easy listening

la guitarra lead está más marciana de lo que recordaba oh mama

Great album by a great artist. No notes.

I mean, it’s Elvis. So, ya.

it was good

Classic American folk-songs that still sound really crisp and nice; I can see why people back then really liked this guy

There is a reason he was called The King!

Really Good Album! Rising of the best

Nunca imaginé que la música de Elvis sea así, muy buena de verdad, me genera mucha serotonina.

fun, unpolished Elvis with all his youthful energy

“NOW GO, CAT, GO!”

The king nunca falla!

Nice album - i listened while nannying a 2 y/old and he did not like it. made me want to dance though and that's all that matters.

he is classic for a reason

most boring thing i could ever say but he just is so good lol. Danny DeVito I get it

its strikingly clear how much as much as he's known for rock and roll, Elvis was also just an old school crooner / balladeer

Легенда, что ещё скажешь

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue

believe it or not, kinda epic... lyrics are what youd expect but bangers throughout

está nice, es Elvis, no pensé que iba a gustarme así, pero tiene una energía única

Trying to imagine living in the 50's when this came out, would love to have experienced the Elvis wave. I'm Counting on You is my favourite.

I've never really listened to him before but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's energetic and fun!

Another collection of sessions instead of an album created at one time. His phrasing isn’t really “Elvis” yet until the end of January ‘56, so the inclusion of the random 1954 tracks is curious. Definitely feels like they had Blue Suede and Tutti Frutti and needed to pad out the rest for an LP. Incredible playing by Scotty Moore throughout. Shocker: it's pretty good!

I liked it. Some good songs on it. Loved the way he did Blue Moon. Probably have never listened to a full album of his, because they sold 45s of his best songs, and that's what we bought.

Muy bueno para la epoca 8/10

Very good and a fun album to listen to. Both high energy and some more mellow parts

I hardly need to put myself in the mindset of the time to hear why he was THE name in American music for so long. Possibly my new favorite version of Blue Moon, Elvis is a far better crooner than I remembered.

Favorite Track: Blue Suede Shoes

Regardless of how you feel about him and his personal life, there is no denying that popular music wouldn't be the same if this album had never existed. And at the end of the day, it is quite good and still exciting to hear over 60 years later.

Fun Rock'n Roll album. You only need one Elvis album in your life and it’s this one. One point for the cover which is a classic.

Elvis! 💪

Elvis on hyvä. 3,5/5.

Almost a no skip album, upbeat songs generally are generally the ones that slap most

Fun. He has such a singular (as far as I know voice). Excited to listen to more. It was nice going through a whole album, I’d heard a couple songs on it before. On subsequent listens over the weekend I love Trying to get to You so much

This is a fun one! I was never really into Elvis but listening to this album you can really get it. So much energy and his vocal performance is incredible. Great listen.

I enjoyed this album. Love his voice, liked the songs

Elvis has an iconic sound even in his debut album. This album really shows who Elvis was and the reasons that he would go through and breakthrough in music. The album is enjoyable and great, and a lot of the songs are classics, particularly blue, suede shoes, but this album being all covers does take a bit away from the master that is Elvis. I think that this is an iconic and great album and I love the sound. I love Elvis. I love that he debuted with this and that this is what started just who he was, and how you changed the music and the scope of what popular music it was, but I do wish it was more original songs from him, which we will get later in his discography, but that doesn’t take away that this is probably one of the best debut albums of all time

Really good. Elvis is the king of rock for a reason. Dude was so great. Wish the songs were longer and there were more guitar solos but thats personal preference

jaa let it ride aber mäsig ok

Direkt mit gute Laune gestartet! Alles sehr schnell. Aber ich mag die Stimmung und Stimme! Funky, groovy. Will mich direkt bewegen. Tolles Cover, tolle Farben!

There may be no better opener than Blue Suede Shoes. The album shows his the great breadth of his vocal range. Only wish that the recording of Blue Moon didn't sound like a demo, it just doesn't fit the rest of the album but overall a great 30mins of music.

This is why they call him The King. I also love bloated corpse Elvis.

Really enjoyed large parts of this. Basically the faster tracks, plus Money Honey. The slower ballads tend to drag a little, but overall a very good debut.

Yeah he's a fucking legend ain't he. Some awesome tunes and the guy has unlimited game doesn't he.

A decent listen - I prefer his slightly later stuff, but this is lively simple music and lyrics and a great voice.

Rock music has moved so far beyond this, but it’s important to remember that most white people were just listening to crooners right before this. I think this one has to be appreciated within its historical influence. Did he unfairly make millions of dollars more than black artists who had been developing and performing this style of music for decades? Absolutely. But did he appreciate the music and by crossing it over, help build a bridge across the divide, opening the door for future opportunities? Also yes

I understand the hate. However. “Blue moon”. Four! Downright spooky at times….

Yes, I totally get it

Very short but all hits. Makes sense why he was so popular.

Enough hits on here for a 3.5, so rounding up.

Elvis was one of the most influential rock stars of all time, and one of the most popular and recognisame name in Western popular music. His debut album from 1956 is probably the earliest album on this whole list? His smooth and tender voice, stage presence and charisma on the stage was one of a kind. I like Blue Suede Shoes and Tutti Frutti the most on this otherwise short album (the former written by the great Carl Perkins) - the whole album must've been a big shock at that time and something so fresh and new. Alone for this the album deserves a high rating, though as an album it can't be compared to later 'album's albums'. On a more personal level, it's a bit crazy to think about that this was released in the same year when my country was fighting in a revolution against Soviet communists, and anything rock'n'roll or Western popular music was banned for many years even after the revolution ended. Huge cultural (and musical) changes were coming in the West in the late 50s-early 60s while my country remained part of the Eastern block and developed in a completely different direction.

The start of it all.

I really liked this album. Feels like a classic rock and roll album. The music is not 100% my cup of tea, but everything about it feels iconic and on point. I'm not crazy about most of the songs being covers, but that's Elvis for you I guess. He has great presence on the songs, and they are all well produced. They all have great instrumentation, and you're in and out in less than 3 minutes. Was surprised by Blue Moon - Take 9/M, it really has stood the test of time. Sounds completely in place in 2026, very haunting cool track. Definitely worth coming back to. 4.75/5

Minding the shitty things he did I love his music and I had a huge Elvis phase a few years ago a solid 4

quite good

Very fun romp album that is short, sweet, and entertaining. A little inconsistent from song to song but overall very entertaining and wastes no time. Classic Elvis sound with some classic songs. Top tracks: Blue Suede Shoes, Tutti Frutti, Money Honey

I liked listening to this one but not sure if this Elvis Presly guy will catch on. It’s that classic late 50s early 60s sound that makes me wish I was driving through America in a classic muscle car. This was an enjoyable listen with a good range of moods from the songs, it’s some of his best work and I can see how it help set up many sounds later to follow. A decent 4-star album, standout songs ‘ Blue suede shoes’, ‘Just because’ and ‘Money honey’.

It got some classics, an impressive start to the career. Could have been a point less but for the style it's good. 7/10.

I dare you to listen to this and not get a weird crush on a dead man, especially after hearing ‘Blue Moon’. Cover: 11/10

Think about this guy performing a song and being SO FUCKING HOT that people went into hysteria. I could see myself doing that

Moving and grooving

Yes this is the debut album from Elvis, but similar to how I feel about Frank Sinatra, I do not hardly own any Elvis albums, not in the way I would own a Bob Dylan album. Elvis to me was always more about the singles and the performances than any album he could ever have made. Having said that, there are exceptions, especially when it comes to the live stuff. Anyway this is a good, if not basic, debut. It's the beginning of his pre-war sound (though I prefer his later voice). There are a lot of gems on here with it being a short album. Biggest Hit - Blue Suede Shoes Biggest Miss (if I had to choose) - I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry Underrated Gem - Trying To Get To You

Maybe not the earth shaking debut of the king of rock and roll, but this is a damn fine collection of rockers and ballads highlighted by the "Blue" songs, "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Blue Moon." I enjoyed the little vocal hiccups and inflections he did on this and it seems a little purer and straightforward than what he would later become (bloated and overhyped). This and the Sun sessions were fun, goofy, and, for lack of a better word, sexy.

About what you’d expect! Have you heard Elvis before? This is that! Pretty good but obviously i was concerned that if i listened to more i’d start worshipping the devil and rioting, but other than that, something like this always helps me connect with my grandmother who passed a few years ago. She loved him and i get it.

this cat has chops 🫰

Ya Elvis was a weirdo and kinda corny and his life went to shit, but this first album really does help sell why he was as big as he was at the time

it's hard to rate this without considering its cultural influence and context. Probably doesn't need to be re-evaluated. I get a weird feeling when I read reviews where users try to judge it in a vacuum or through a modern lens. This doesn't make sense, it's a product of its time and wouldn't be the same if created today. I give it a 4/5 because 3 feels too low (it's certainly not boring enough for a 3), and 5 is reserved for the absolute best albums in my life, which this isn't.

Great voice! It's a shame that the songs were quite short. This album was a pleasant journey companion. I was cruising through the ice and snow with Elvis. It's hard to believe that the albums are chosen randomly.

Shits influential af

Not a massive fan of Elvis, and not a huge fan of his vocals. He wrote some top tracks in his time. Some decent acoustic riffs. There are a few good ones here "Blue Suede Shoes" (obv.), "I'm Counting On You", "Tutti Frutti" (not a bad cover), "Trying To Get To You", but the rest are just okay. I don't think this is Elvis at his best, but it's energetic and the perfect 50s sound.

Enjoyed my time with Elvis

troppo bello che bel mood cia

Ha gasato assai il kinf of rock n roll

Kinda hard to bet against a classic like Elvis, plus my girlfriend loves him so bonus point.

While it has some absolute bangers and is a classic its not one I plan on re-listening to often.

What can ya say? It’s Elvis - the King - he started off so strong, hot AF, mad skills, the swagger, and that voice! But hell if life isn’t a dark and brutal comedy - what the lesson? Don’t eat fried peanut butter, banana, and bacon sandwiches!

Wow! This is just a super fun time capsule. Like, it's impossible not to tap your foot to the rhythm and swing between the high-energy beginnings of "rock" and some of the slower stuff here. He’s got that Elvis charisma for days. There is a ton of appreciation coming out of this record. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Blue Suede Shoes - I'm Counting on You - I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry - Blue Moon

classic debut. good choice of covers. interestingly not a single original. perkins. charles. little richard. pretty strong even without the singles.

Surprisingly vibey!

like it

8 - GOOD

it's elvis, it may not be of my time, but i can appreciate him

I’m not a massive Elvis fan, but this is 29 minutes of excellent rock ’n’ roll, and its impact is undeniable. The only thing I could really criticise is that Elvis didn't write any of these songs.

Forest Gump taught Elvis how to Elvis

This is album is full of fun, timeless 8 bar blues songs. If you think you haven't heard these songs, well, you have. Instant classic.

This debut album opens with Elvis Presley's hit cover of "Blue Suede Shoes", and side two opens with his cover of "Tutti Frutti". The album mainly contains Rockabilly / Rock and Roll / R&B songs, plus a Country song or two. What a debut!

4 stars for there being a direct correlation between this albums release, and a spike in the pregancy rate for 18-25yo's back in 1956.

An ablum full of rock 'n' roll classics introducong the world to Elvis.

I mean this is great

The King continues to reign after 70 whole years. When I first listened to Elvis Presley's debut LP back in 2024, I had a very dismissive outlook on the record. While I definitely had respect for Elvis for bringing rock n' roll to mainstream audiences and changing the face of music as we know it, I felt that the music hadn't aged as well as one would expect from the biggest name in rock music. However, after giving this record a relisten, I think I can finally meet the album where it's at and enjoy it for being a simple but effective collection of tracks. There's a feeling of freedom on this record that just isn't present in the rest of Elvis' discography, which can easily be attributed to this being his first big release before his meteoric rise to stardom. As such, the album gives off the idea that Elvis is just hanging out in the studio, singing whatever songs he feels like and having a good time. All the tracks showcase his innate showmanship as well as a charming exuberance, whether he's charging his way through a rock n' roll standard or crooning a softer ballad. Some covers fail to match the original ("Tutti Frutti" is one such example), but the overall project is solid and very fun. Standout Tracks: Blue Suede Shoes, I Got a Woman, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You), Blue Moon, Money Honey Score: B+

Blue suede shoes is a classic. Solid album. Surprised by his vocal range, I'd only ever heard him do low voice before.

Easy listen. Very nostalgic. Hard to compare with modern albums as the production is very basic and composition basic but obviously that’s a product of the time. Definitely will listen again.

Got to give credit. I've never been the biggest Elvis fan, but listening to this I can see why so many consider him The King. The album itself has high points and low points, but even the lows aren't that low. I definitely prefer the livelier tracks to the mellow ones, but the kids wanted to swoon as much as dance.

I wish I listened more attentively, which I probably will today. But yes this is a great album

tutti frutti oh rudy tutti frutti oh rudy tutti frutti oh rudy tutti frutti oh rudy 4 stars?

coole Musik, klassiker. bisl schwulstige mucke bei den balladen aber ansonsten kann ich gut verstehen, warum insb. die schnelleren titel so ein mega hit waren. like it a lot

Loved this one in contrast with Ray Charles purely because of the amazing lyrics and unique jazz old rhythm, i’d say it’s a 7,2/10 considering it’s an artist that never goes out of style

A lean 28 minutes! Enjoyable the whole way through with a few less memorable moments. A glimpse of what was to come.

My mother-in-law passed away last year. She was a huge Elvis fan. It was a pleasure to listen to this album.

An album full of classics, that you don't realise were Elvis (at least I didn't) "I love you most of all because you're you, no matter ehat the world may say about me" "I love you for the way you never doubt me" (I added this song to my wedding playlist" Love the longing in Trying to get to you. Like is this album talking about the same woman? He has a lot of conflicting feelings if it is lol Omg the juxataposition of "I Love You Because" to "Just Because" LOLOLOL WHAT Elvis a savage. Faves: - Blue Suede Shoes - I Love You Because - Trying to Get to You - I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin') - Blue Moon (i think this is like my fave? His voice the sound omg, CROONNNINGGGG)

კარგია. i love you because უმარტივესი შედევრია

Never heard of this guy tbh. He's pretty talented, but I don't appreciate how he stole his name from Elvis Costello. Plus he's not as good looking.

Fondamental..

What is there to say? Absolutely timeless

great. Authentic voice.

Sitting 70 years later listening to this may feel like an easy thing to dismiss but it is so strong. Even if you've never listened to Elvis purposefully you know half of this album which itself doesn't waste time being under half an hour. The first 9 tracks and the last one are certainly worth a detour and though it won't be an all-time favourite, I had a good time and deserves the spot in that list.

Foundation of rock n roll and popular music. I can do without so many ballads but overall gets more stars for being historic too.

ELVIS!

Foundational for music in innumerable ways. It's impossible to remove all of our knowledge of Elvis, his music, and his impact on music when listening to this, so I can only imagine what it felt like to hear this music for the first time in 1956. A culture resetting album. Blue Moon is an underrated favorite

Pretty damn good for an introductory album. I thought it was a few years earlier than ‘56 which threw me off that Elvis covered Ray Charles on his first album. 100% can hear the blues and rock influence he heavily drew from and helped turn into Pop music

Decent album - can't really go wrong with a bit of Elvis

When rock n roll just rocked n rolled

One of the oldest albums on the list, and without it there'd probably be less than half of the list on here. Really influential for sure. It's short but all the songs on here are delivered well. Can't really blame Elvis for the racist tendencies of his era and he could deliver the music a lot better than white contemporaries like Pat Boone and Neil Sedaka anyways. It's still fun to listen to, even 70 years later.

blue suede shoes immediately got me in the right mindset. and because of this, i ended up having a great time.

It's impossible to approach this album without 70-odd years of context getting in the way, and that context might be the biggest thing about this record. It's a collection of high energy tracks (not just a collection of singles!!) which sent the willies right up the leftover '40s and turned them into the '50s, setting up the entire universe of pop and rock which would develop over the coming decades. Great voice, great tunes, great band! Favourite tracks: I Got A Woman, Just Because, I'll Never Let You Go, Money Honey

The fact that this was recorded at 3 different studios lends a nice variety to the sounds on the album. Strong voice, good energy, fun listen.

He doesn't do 'Tutti Frutti' as well as Little Richard, but this is still a cute little collection of songs. There were some ('Just Because', 'Trying To Get To You') that I hadn't heard before but liked. I think I have a soft spot for Elvis because he's a bit cheesy and corny. But he's still a pretty cool guy.

It's hard not to like this! Classic tunes sung by a very charismatic performer. These aren't really my favorite versions of most of these songs, but as a collection, it's an enjoyable listen.

Ah, an Elvis Presley album. I really enjoyed this one. A splendid 30 minute collection of rockers and ballads. This is my 29th album overall and the 13th album that I gave four or five stars to. Interestingly, none of those 13 albums were released after 1989. That makes me feel older than I actually am………..

I've enjoyed Elvis's early records for a few years. His later output I'm just starting to venture into. But this one from 1956 is a stone cold classic. If you're feeling sceptical, you could grumble that he just took elements of blues and gospel and smooshed them into a sanitised concoction for white audiences. However, it does sound good, and it created something new in the process. This one has a nice mix of rocking songs and slower ballads. Running twelve tracks in under 30 mins, there's a nice concision and energy to the album. I don't really like "Tutti Frutti" or "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry", which are a bit panderingly childish. But overall, a solidly fun album. 4*

The hits still stand up well after almost 70 years.

One of the Three Kings of Rock and Roll.. along with Chuck Berry and Jimmy Reed. Some tunes I never heard before that took me to a rockabilly joint downtown where the cats are cool and the chicks are hip.

He is the worst thing since Elvis Presley To do Black music so selfishly And use it to get himself wealthy (Hey) There's a concept that works! but he's doin it good!

I mean it’s Elvis. And a classic from him.

Кайф. 4,5 / 5

Nice and blues-y, a very "Fallout-esque" journey back home

Yah I’ll admit I’m biased, I’ve always loved Elvis since I was a very young child. My dad was a fan my grandmother was a massive fan, he’s basically been a family member in my house. This is also one of his most well rounded albums as well as being one the albums where he really got to show his range and his unique singing style. It’s also kind of a weird album to review because it’s so fundamental to all music that came after it. Reviewing this album is like reviewing cavemen banging on drums in a cave. It’s such a fundamental building block to ALL music. Also this album follows one of my favorite traits to a great album, and much is it doesn’t over stay its welcome, the whole thing is just under 29 mins. My only problem with this is his personal life, I think aligning himself with the colonel and blindly trusting him was the greatest mistake of his life behind pursuing Priscilla, which I think hurt his legacy almost as bad. But, that being said I’m biased, I love Elvis music, Sue me.

He’s the King for a reason

139/1001 :: Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley Heard before? ✅ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 8 Listen before you die: Yes People love to hate The King but he was crowned The King for a reason and it started right here. Elvis may not have written Blue Suede Shoes, I got A Woman and Tutti Frutti but he played and sang the hell out of em. I think context is import too. This album helped bring rock n roll to the masses. Lastly, I love how the cover art inspired so many. This is history.

Never liked Elvis in my youth but a fan now!

Previously rated: #574 - Elvis is Back (4/5) #656 - From Elvis In Memphis (4/5) *************************************** Album #961 This is very basic country rock & roll with some schmaltzy ballads. I'm not sure which are covers (maybe they all are?), but most are good, though he can't touch Little Richard's Tutti Frutti. This is a comfort album for sure. Best tracks: Blue Suede Shoes, I Got a Woman, and I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You).

Elvis is back in the building! Starts off with the classic Blue Suede Shoes. I'm Counting On You is lovely, I love his slower jams. I Got A Woman had some great guitar, and I didn't realize Kanye's "she take my money" from Gold Digger was adapted from a line from this song. One-Sided Love Affair was a fun one, I Love You Because was very sweet, and Just Because was pretty good. And then Tutti Frutti just amps up the energy, what a classic. I'm used to the Little Ritchie version, but this one was a blast as well. Trying To Get To You was very smooth, some good guitar work. The rest of the songs sort of dropped the energy a bit, but it's a great album. Long live The King! Best song: Blue Suede Shoes

Raw, shocking, historically seismic—and still weirdly sloppy in a way modern rock bands would kill to fake. Not perfect, but dangerously alive.

Funky, fresh and a great & groundbreaking rock 'n' roll record.

The songs get me in a better mood.

History is kinda my ‘thing’ and what I’m gonna say about Elvis is still lots of the artists you know and love today wouldn’t be there without him. Sure I don’t think Elvis wrote a song in his life, and lots of it was covers by Black artists who were just better (the obvious example being Little Richard and his version of Tutti frutti). But England/ America (particularly America) was just so racist at the time. I think we needed Elvis as a ‘trojan horse’ to get rock to the masses, he was a performer, so he performed. Subsequent decades would come along, artists influenced probably your favourite artist it your favourite artists, artists that people form the 50’s wouldn’t be able to comprehend came along. 4/5 for that

Not my cup of tea, but feel like it deserves a 4 for how influential it was

The voice is still iconic

Thought it would be more difficult to listen to than it was. Some songs are amazing. Blue suede shoes, tutti frutti and my new fav trying to get to you.

Great opportunity for casual Elvis fans to hear some hits.

The early years are not my musical taste - but a great musician

Thoroughly enjoyed the energy of this album. Interspersed with some real crooners but I don't mind a soppy love song tbh. Trying to Get to You and I'm Counting On You are personal faves. Definitely an era defining release.

I love Elvis. I really enjoyed the raw, unpolished sound of this album. I’m a sucker for all the vocal affectations and swagger Elvis exhibited. The musicianship on the album is infectiously enjoyable. I honestly would’ve given the album five stars, but I know Elvis gets SO much better a few years down the line.

I ended up listening to this along with Life of a Showgirl.(A track from one then a track from the other) Oddly enough this increased my enjoyment of both and pushed Elvis upto a four.

I question some of the choices of material (especially the ballads). I question some of the instrumentation and production choices. I question whether I can ever really hear this the way it must have sounded in 1956. I hear the iconic "one for the money, two for the show / three to get ready now go cat go" and I'm mesmerized. What was the question again?

Inte så bra som jag förväntade mig. Naturligtvis en klassiker, men med flera svaga spår mellan de bangers som finns. Elvis sjunger naturligtvis gudomligt, men kompet känns väldigt daterat. En svag fyra.

Classic. Pretty easy to listen to. Not my favorite but has a surprisingly good time listening to the album.

Classic sounds of the start of rock & roll from the 50’s. Elvis’ silky, smooth voice is easily recognizable and I imagine was extremely unique at the time of this recording. Really good album and I enjoyed listening to it from start to finish.

Yes, it's undeniably outdated... but its influence on rock'n'roll is undeniable. This album was the first of its kind — a true pioneer that marked the beginning of a new musical era. Elvis, the King, will forever be etched in musical history. And for that reason alone, this album deserves 4 stars. Why not 5? Because despite its legacy, it's simply too dated for me to enjoy again. But giving it less than 4 stars would be a disservice to its cultural impact — and that’s something I can’t do.

The album that changed the rock and roll scene forever, what’s not to like

Foundational!

Classic sound, really well done.

The second-best album to have a pink and green typeface dominating the bottom-left corner and a guy in black and white with a guitar. Inoffensively fun listening music for the 50s with enough groovy staples to impress anyone and get them tapping their toes. I've never really groked on Elvis' warbling-twangy singing style but there's something timelessly beautiful about the 12 bar blues. Obviously there's gallons of ink spilled over Elvis' right - both artistically and ethically - to sing these tunes but from a purely musical perspective this one's great. fav tracks: Blue Suede Shoes, Tutti Frutti, Blue Moon

I would never dream of stepping on his blue suede shoes.

THE record. this is a monster and you don't even need to be into music to be told just how this is groundbreaking. there was before and after this record. did he invent rock? no. did he write all this shit? no. but once this bell was rung, it didn't matter who did what, the seal was broken. the template to rock n roll was born in an instant. putting in work since '54, this is the culmination of all the music being pioneered up to this point, letting go in full force for all the world to see. personally, i am not that attached to Elvis, he is important, but not everything hits for me. this in tandem with live shows, the scene was born and never goin to leave. music became fun. i can't say i love it, but its 4/5 because its a watershed album.

albums were very short in those days! around 30 mins! Enjoyed it though

Just a good time

A lot of classics on this album that are overall good to great songs. A little bit of filler but a solid listen

I've never held Elvis in the same esteem as Chuck Berry or Buddy Holly, but this is a damn good album. I much prefer this to his later stuff. 4/5

Honestly, this album is a little all over the place… a good example of a young artist finding his voice (or perhaps of a music machine pushing the artist in a direction…?). I was surprised at the variance and nuance to his singing from track to track. I enjoyed this more than I expected to, kind of in a bemused way. Fave track: Blue Moon (pared back beauty)

A good record but I think there are better early rock n roll albums. This doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy it.

Great early Elvis album which introduced me to a few I had never heard before. I don't think I have listened to a bad Elvis record yet.

It’s impossible not to be at least somewhat familiar with Elvis. He was before my time, but I’ve always been aware of how influential and popular he was. I always thought his music was enjoyable, but it felt like the music of my parents, not me. I was vaguely familiar with one or two songs on this album, but I had never really sat down to listen to him until now. I’m glad I did. This album is great, and I found several songs to add to my library. I have a newfound appreciation for Elvis and look forward to exploring more of his discography. Added to Library: • Blue Suede Shoes • I Got a Woman • One-Sided Love Affair • Trying to Get to You • Blue Moon (Take 9/M)

I enjoyed this, but probably not as much as I thought I would. It's good music, well written and well sang. Elvis was a heck of a performer. But I dunno, something didn't entirely click with this album. It was good, but not phenomenal.

Elvis the pelvis! I know his huge hits but nothing else so lets see! icon obviously and apparently very hot but idk how problematic he was sorry im too woke ive heard blue suede shoes before for sure even if it wasnt elvis singing it im counting on you is really nice i didnt really know he was like a real good singer! but he has a very beautiful voice. i got a woman ok cool good its fine one sided love affair just goofy as fuckkkkk he sounds literally like goofy from mickey mouse and somehow his voice is going through different accents or some shit idk i love you because is really just fucking sweet and i like it more than most slow ballads like this he has a great voice. just because was good tutti frutti i seem to recall as a song of little richards who ive also never really listened to ! but it's pretty fire a little meaningless and repetitive but ok trying to get to you is just absolutely lovely wow it's so warm i love old music like this because its so warm and close and its unique in that way we'll never get that back :-( it's lowkey the best song i'll never let you go little darlin : also really just nice wow i dont know what to say its all just nice Blue moon finally some talk about beer it's all fine literally the pink panther theme in Money Honey not as good as lady gaga's but still pretty good

I love blues rock and as one of the godfathers of the genre, the king you might say, I wanted this to be a 5. But I think it's just a 4 for me.

How tf can you hate Elvis this album is epic 4.2

Unlike a lot of his 1950s early rock n roll pioneer peers (sorry Buddy Holly heads), this is still listenable and enjoyable. Don't know if its the myth or the raw talent that makes it so. Makes me want to close the laptop, get into the car, and drive into the country.

Wow! I love every song on this album

7/10 Favorites: One-Sided Love Affair Blue Suede Shoes

Classic Elvis voice. God bless him!

Elvis's life and career is tainted with controversy, but one cannot deny the cultural and historical significance of this album. It's a bit basic and repetitive, so not a 5-star album by any means, but still an important one and easy to listen to. My biggest complaint is he didn't write any of the songs, but he sure does sing em nice and play a pretty decent guitar.

69 years after the original release. I suppose it was pretty cutting edge at the time but understandably now seems a bit dated. Very much worth listening to as an important historical album (and it does feature "Blue Suede Shoes)

I love Elvis. Always have, always will. Personally I'm the biggest fan of his '68 Comeback Era, and although I love the early stuff, I even feel like the best of that era perhaps comes a touch later. That being said, this is still so solid and so fun. If I was a young person back in the 50s, I would be creaming my pants over this man. One of the greatest performers to ever live. It's simple, but it's important, and it's damn good. Side note: listening to those goofy excuses for guitar solos on these old tunes always makes me laugh. They really thought they were doing something, huh?
