Its all very pleasant but not really my thing

How do I even rate this...? It's music and he's definitely a talented musician, but there's nothing here that's enjoying for me. I can imagine I'd listen to this at some bomb-ass Brazillian joint and I'd love it for the experience, but listening to it between writing and completing my TPS reports, it does nothing except agitate me. Sorry Milton.

It was fine, I guess? I'm not equipped with the musical or cultural knowledge to properly judge this.

Wild Brazilian album. Many different influences come together to make a very unique experience of a Latin infused psychedelic folk rock sound.

I didn’t know what to expect from this album but I loved it!

I really enjoyed this collection from artists who got together and decided to try a lot of styles to see what Brazilian popular music in the 70s could be. The length allows for a lot of this freedom, and whenever there was something that wasn't my favorite, there was something immediately following that was my favorite.

This was an album that was easy to listen to. I enjoyed the groove.

Captivatingly beautiful. Or beautifully captivating. Either way, beautiful and captivating. It's feeding my soul today. I love it.

The cover of this album is remarkable. My interest was piqued immediately. What is it about Brazilian music that is so listenable? Is it the amazing percussion? The sound of Portuguese? Those rhythmic guitars? Maybe it’s all of that and more. This album had a lot of unique twists on the Brazilian sound and seemed to experiment quite a bit with styles and sounds that gave this great variety. It went in directions I didn’t expect. This is something I think I could have only discovered here. I love it!

Best Song: Cravo E Canela. Dance-y and uplifting. Worst Song: Me Deixa Em Paz. Without knowing the content of the lyrics, this feels like a religious proclamation that I needn't be a part of. Overall: A bit of a fever dream, although sadly one that went on long enough for me to want some medicine.

Well I wasn't expecting this. Reading Wiki and looking at reviews I'm piecing this together I think. Airy and easy listening, floaty and mellow I don't really need to know the words as I'm sure they match the music. I don't dislike it but there are other Brazilian artists in the 60's that have real integrity and punch. I'm thinking the Beatles are an influence? Maybe the French pop artists from the 60's too? Musically quite accomplished- but as others have noted the production isn't great (it's a bit tinny and flat).

Enjoyable instrumentation and songwriting. The second half is particularly enjoyable.

Surprisingly modern sounding world music album that is a bit too long

Very long, although some nice ideas and melodies.

Had some interesting moments but overall I found myself getting bored. Not as poppy as Sergio Mendes for example.

This one started with a bang! I honestly thought I was going to love it but found that it dragged a bit across the middle/end. 3/5

Disco muy versátil en géneros, a ratos muy setentero, funk, progresivo y a ratos tranquilo, de balada y pocos instrumentos.

Qué agradable sujeto… Me gustó mucho el disco y mi pequeño 'pero' es que al final, siendo disco doble, es demasiado. Sin embargo, me encantó escuchar música brasileña que no sea simplemente samba para carnaval. Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser y O Trem Azul, rolas que incluso agrego a mi biblioteca.

Double album really long, but the songs are quick and varied, so doesn’t get boring.

A fun morning listen, but doesn't hold a candle to some of the other cuban-esque music we have gotten on this list. Enjoyable, but forgettable.

Very cool album. Latin jazzy-y, but also feels like a Brazilian Nick Drake at times, even veering into sounds that reminded me of mainstream rock pop groups like the Beach Boys. Never heard of this artist but really dig the style. This was great music to play while building Ikea furniture. Favorite tracks: Tudo o Que Voce, O Trem Azul, Dos Cruces, San Vicente. Album art: Two boys sitting on the ground, one happy one very upset. Not sure what to make of it but it's pretty good. 4/5

Haunting, beautiful but very long and at times impenetrable - the language barrier doesn’t help - I’m sure there are pleasures to discover in the words but unfortunately cannot appreciate them.

La première écoute ne s'est pas faite dans un bon environnement, je n'ai pas aimé. J'ai décidé de donné une 2e chance dans un environnement plus calme. C'est mieux, mais ce n'est pas égale et beaucoup trop long, quoi que ça va avec l'époque je crois. Il y a quelques moments musicaux intéressant sur l'album comme la fin de Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo avec l'orchestration.

Ok that's two Brazilian albums in a row, wasn't expecting that. This is really nice and inoffensive, doesn't make my hangover angry on a Sunday morning so that's nice. Bit long though. 3/5.

Note to self: listen to more Brazilian music! I had not heard this before and I was pleasantly surprised. A relaxing and soothing listen, though a little long, had me longing to listen to other Brazilian artists as well.

Quiet a nice album, a fairly relaxing listen. "Paisagem da Jenela" and "Saídas e Bandeiras nº 2" the two best songs on the album in my opinion.

Really enjoyed this, lots of excellent grooves.

Starts super strong on the first track! This whole thing sounds fantastic on headphones too. However, over the course of its long, double-album duration, I end up liking about 1/2 of the tracks. I am partial towards the more upbeat and percussion heavy numbers from the first half of the album. Love the arrangements and creative structures. Would be 5 stars if they would've pared it down to a single album.

It sounds pretty neat and there is a lot of interesting culture behind the album on Wikipedia, but for my own listening pleasure it's not my thing.

Clube da Esquina is one of the masterpieces of brazilian music. An MPB classic, with nods to psycholdelic pop, rock and some experimental moments. The vocals by Milton Nascimento and Beto Guedes are the hightlights, specially because their voices are in contrast. When this double album opens with "Tudo Que Você Podia Ser" you already know that you are in for an incredible ride and that the artists involved are in the peak of their creativity. "Dos Cruces", "Me Deixa Em Paz" and "Nada Será Como Antes" are also worth noting.

This one was pretty catchy. Plenty of musical highs, and lows only equaled in scuba diving.

Unique pop music from Brasil! It's lush with instrumentation, rhythmically groovy, sensationally beautiful vocals. Even during the slower parts, the warm acoustic strumming accompanies Portuguese lyrics that float around the air. Occasionally taking elements of psychedelic music, we hear phased guitars add another layer to the already vast landscape of music being produced here. Excellence.

Prima latin album, best wel lekker

I liked this album, but it did feel kind of same-y after a while. I considered the lyrics in a different language as another instrument, which was pretty good. It just didn't move me as much as I was expecting to, as I had heard some of Milton N's work before. Mostly just the acoustic guitar work. *shrug*

I enjoyed it but not sure if I'd ever really go back to it. I worry there's a bias creeping in because it's in Portuguese and I can't connect with the lyrics. It's clearly not a 5 and worth at least a 3. First track was great. Not sure any others struck the same nerve even though it was a good listen. With more patience maybe this would be a 4.

I've been listening to this album for a few days now trying to put into words what I feel when I hear it. The whole package is a very ambitious release by the duo. I love the mix of mild psychedelia with what I assume are some traditional sounds. I've read tat Brazilian music takes more of its influence from European and African sounds than what we attribute to a Latin American sound and I think I agree. This is one of those albums that I've seen on lists of albums worth checking out for a few years now but it wasn't until last week when I finally heard it for the first time. I've fallen in love with it. Even the short tracks that seem like they could be developed more seem right after a few listens. I'm not sure if I could pick a favorite yet, although lyrically (yes I looked up tranlations) I'd say it was O Trem Azel (The Blue Train). I will be listening to this a lot more in the future. I feel like I could keep exploring this for months and still discover more to love about it.

Eh...it was fine. Not sure why I had to hear this before I die. Probably would help if I knew what they were saying, so I suppose I have an appreciation for how the 1001 albums thing can be challenging for non-English speakers. The music was good but nothing unique or special to me. Giving it a 3 because there was nothing wrong with it, but no more because I'm fine with never listening to it again.

12/16/2021 Today's Album: "Clube Da Esquina" by Milton Nascimento - This album is really difficult to review as well. It is really excellently performed and written. I love all of the melodies and beats on all of these songs and they are all very charming, but being in some latin language, it get's pretty difficult to follow. I think I that is all I really have to say about this one. Score: 5/10 Great but I can no speak the language Highlights: all I guess?

Was not expecting this. Smooth, ecclectic, not hanging around. A new little joy that I'll be revisiting.

Mint album, can't tell a word they're saying but still manages to tap into a universal spirit. Cluba de esquina no. 2 is a track of pure human yearning and trem de doido sounds like crazy horse. Mmm

I'd never heard of Milton Nascimento, on first listen it felt to me like this was on the list purely to up the quota of Latin albums. I've since done some Googling and he does seem to be very highly regarded, Rolling Stone voted this album the 7th best Brazilian album of all time but it's not for me. It's really bland. It's got none of the exciting party elements I would generally associate with Latin music. Instead it is infused with the dullest elements of jazz and prog. And if there's one thing this list has taught me, it's that jazz and prog are not my bag baby.

Meh, not my style

Not hugely into samba type stuff, but this had some magic moments… as ever with these things; I can’t particularly get on board with double albums. Self edit for gods sake!

This has to be one of the best unknown albums on this list. It's a double albums that needs to be a double and is not padded out by filler. I love the genre hopping between folk, psychedelia, exotica and even baroque pop. Superb in every department more people need to hear albums like this.

Very beautiful music, both instrumentals and vocals. It's quite a long album with a lot of tracks, yet all the tracks differ and you don't get bored. Very impressed with this. Not something I would ever listen to if it wasn't for this site, so im very thankful.

Pretty fun and interesting to hear another language style of music.

Very cinematic strings. The songs have the feel of 60s/70s American folk songs while having the unique melodies of bossa nova and other Brazilian genres. The Beatles influence, specifically Paul McCartney, can be heard throughout the album. One of the only things that takes away from it is that I can’t understand the lyrics. The instruments are really interesting.

Nuvem Cigana got that lovely flute lmao reminds me of fake names on badana. Tonal shift between 6 and 7 I knew when we were on a new section. Wish I understood portuguese, but alas. Overall was a nice album with tons of influences it it from bossa nova/ samba music to some interesting rock guitars

Nice easy listening

A 1972 'música popular brasileira' record that furthers post-bossa nova elements through its excessive panning production and midtempo expressions. The distinct tonal characteristics of the acoustic guitar and delicate vocals flow naturally throughout the entire record, providing vibrant cultural visualization through diverse compositions. Contributing majorly to popular Brazilian music, 'Clube de Esquina' shapes up to be a compelling contribution to MPB through organic presentation and easy listening.

Enjoyable

I was not expecting to like this much, but it was really good. As Márcio Borges so clearly stated, "Naturally, the critics were terrible. They didn't understand a bit of the inter-racial, international, interplanetary ecumenism proposed by the atemporal dissonances from Bituca." My thoughts exactly. 3 stars.

What an absolute joy. After the first 11 songs, I found myself thinking this was a candidate for the most surprising 5 on this list. But it turns out, the issue was there were still 10 more songs to go. This is probably just nit-picking, and we should probably evaluate double albums differently anyway. It just went a little too long. A few tracks reminded me of the theme song to "Chico and The Man", which is a compliment. There's elation to be found all over this album. This was made some 15 years before Paul Simon raped and pillaged from the genre to make Graceland. And somehow this sounds fresher and more alive.

Couldn't get into this one. Just didn't really dig it. Terribly sorry.

Bit dull

Partly of my hope with doing the 1001 albums was to find a hidden gem that I hadn't heard of before... I think this is one of them. From my first listen, I enjoyed it, no idea of the lyrics meaning, but felt really good. Musically it's a great mix: vibrant, pleasant, upbeat, dreamy and (in places) hauntingly beautiful.

The change in audio quality/tone when Cais changed over to largely piano REALLY threw me off for a second

I can dig this kind of music in moderation, but over an hour is a tough prospect, especially when there's a language barrier. Still, pleasant to listen to.

Quite alright brazilian pop which definitely is not my wheelhouse. There are actually 2 artists on this album, Milton Nascimento to whom this album is assigned on this site and Lô Borges who only has 4 songs on the album but in my opinion by far steals the show.

Pleasant to listen to, dig the music. Vocals in Portuguese didn't bother me, after all, Rammstein is a favorite band of mine also and I don't understand German. Probably only a 3 just because I don't see me ever listening to this again.

First Listen. I wish I understood Portuguese because I think the lyrics have to be as amazing as the melodies. This album has such an amazing, calming presence. This is one of those albums I would have never listened to in my life. So I am grateful that it is on this list so I did get the chance to hear it. I can't wait to listen to more of it in the future. My rating may seem low for now, but I know this album will only go up as I listen to it more. 2.5/5

Brilliant but needs a lot more listening

Awesome instrumentation, and abrupt mood shifts within one tune - something I haven't heard before in this kind of music. The guitar playing is great, with tasty chord voicings and sparing use of dissonance.

As a double album..... it's a committed listen but I enjoyed the Brazilian tinge to what was a pretty relaxing 90 minutes or so

A mix of styles, tempos and vibes, but still a cohesive piece. No idea about the lyrical content, but each song still manages to communicate a feeling, making it an engaging and enjoyable listen. 3.5/5.

Fantastic album, it deserves quiet attentive listening (not as simple background music). Ideal for winter (or is it summer?) afternoons at home (or on the beach). Milton's and Lo Borges seem to complement and feed off each other. Lo Borges' guitar work is great! Classical early 70's Brazil.

This album starts *so good*, and I am truly a sucker for Portuguese singing. This should have been an easy 5 stars for me! But the second half of this album drags SO HARD. It comes to a creeping, drudging close.

2,8 Aangezien ik er niets van versta is het vooral het gevoel dat je krijgt bij de nummers. Omdat je de tekst ook niet begrijpt ga je sneller af op de muziek, en kreeg ik er ook sneller een emotie bij. Andere sounds dan ik gewoon ben dus wel een leuk om te horen. Omdat ik er ook niet van verstond was het album wel wat lang voor me.

Dakle šteta mi je što se ovaj album evo baš sada potrefio kada je mutavo, hladnjikavo/mrazovno vrijeme. Album kod kojeg sam vidio dosta praisea, i bome visokih ocijena. Krenuvši sa albumom, odmah sam skužio da to nije za ovo vrijeme, da je ovo ipak nekako tro(pički), sunčani, ljetni album. Zato sam preslušao sve jednom, nisam htio uništavati taj feeling, pa ću svakako album poslušati kada vrijeme bude ljetnije/toplije, jer vjerujem da će tada album pasati kao budali šamar jer ima predispozicije. Nema mi ni veze što je na španjolskom/portugalskom. Pa tako da ovaj rejting ništa zasad ne znači dok ne dođe vrijeme za pravo slušanje ovog albuma. Lijep pozdrav. ?/5

I didn't enjoy this album very much, but I read about it and I understand its importance in the history of Brazilian music, so nice to see it get some attention. For my own musical preferences, not my thing.

а ниче, прикольно. правда, к сожалению, не хватило времени для вдумчивого прослушивания, но дважды прогнал полностью за работой и практически постоянно выхватывал какие-то интересные моменты. вокал местами очень интересный, музыка бесхитростная, но свою функцию довольно чётко исполняет. и вообще это, конечно, больше альбом-настроение. здесь нет явно выделяющихся хитов (хотя я, например, для себя увидел мелодические параллели с некоторыми поп-песнями нашего времени), все наоборот звучит очень цельно и местами аморфно. стоит ли критически относиться к альбому, если это не просто сборник хороших песен? на мой взгляд нет - такие музыкальные полотна очень хорошо заходят под определённые ситуации и к ним возвращаешься нечасто, зато очень метко. вот за что стоит критиковать - так это за унылую песню с бабским вокалом, а также за тошнотворную пиано-балладу, подозрительно напоминающую лет ит би. ну и какого-то катарсиса в течение этого альбома я для себя не нашёл - нет ощущения живой динамики, нет мощной закрывашки. если вспоминать такие вот цельные альбомы (to be kind от swans, например), то в них зачастую есть ощущение направленности движения, которая в определённый момент достигает своего пика. но здесь концовка настала почти незаметно, поэтому, при общей благозвучности и экспериментальности альбома, больше 7 поставить не могу

Не, нормальная тема. Вторая половина Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo - балдёж, для саундрека я бы спиздил куда-нибудь. Да и в целом почилить врубить - ваще самое то, там вон 21 трек целый. На Вики среди жанров Progressive rock указан, ну вот это же прям ваще-ваще не то, что мы вчерась слушали. Ничего мозги не ебёт, ничего не душит, тупо всё по кайфу.

I enjoyed the beginning of this album, and it was even a possible 4 stars for me. But then by the end of the (very long) album it felt like the artist was just making noises at me. I want to justify giving this a 2 with the analogy of an artist painting a beautiful painting and then finger painting all over it with the remaining of the paint on their pallet.

Never heard of Milton Nascimento nor Lô Borges nor this album. Genre: Música popular brasileira Very pleasant sounding. Nice experience. Almost bought this for $5.99 on iTunes, but they only offer the 15-track edition, excluding six songs from this double album. Am I missing something? Without a translation of the lyrics, it’s difficult to assess the artistry as a whole, but the sound is novel (at least to my ears). Some similarities to Sérgio Mendes, without the dramatic percussion of Brasil ‘66. On some tracks I felt frustrated not having a translation of the lyrics. Intricate chord structures, very nice progressions, avoiding the temptation to overdo; chiefly composed for voice and guitar. There are some tuning and pitch problems (serious on the orchestral backgrounds especially harsh-sounding on “Um Gosto da Sol”), and ‘buzzing’ on the acoustic guitar. But overall, the instrumentals are entrancing and satisfying, with great variety. Vocal quality is okay, a little too airy, weak on the Iberian ‘moorish’ fluctuations and trills, and lacking in both range and timbre. It’s satisfactory for a jazzy sound, but not stellar. Falsetto particularly weak. Recording technology not up to British or American standards of the time, but that’s to be expected. Is it me or does Portuguese lack a poetic sound? I wonder how these songs would sound in German. 😁😁 In sum, this is a good album, and I’m glad I was introduced to it. 3/5

Got that earlier 70s sense of groove. Tudo O Que has my interest. Cravo E Canela is a good tune. Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo has this wacky break section in the middle of the song and comes back with authority. Side 3 sort of breezed by me. Side 4 has some really weird parts. I would say side 1 and maybe side 2 deserve a relisten.

Shame on me for being Brazilian and never listen to this whole album. Sure, I know some songs but listen to them completely was a very nice experience. Sometimes Milton Nascimento makes me sleepy (mainly his new songs after "Clube da Esquina"), but this album is completely the opposite, it makes me fells with a lot of energy. I don't know if this list includes more Brazilian albums or even Brazilian artists, but this one was very pleasable

I've been really interested in Brazilian music as of late. This album starts off really well, but then it gets a bit "baroque". Don't know if I'll get back to it anytime soon.

Enjoyed some of the melodies.

Beautifully vibrant album. Every track manages to twist and turn through several variations within 2-3 minutes while maintaining a core sound throughout the LP - it's immediately clear the influence this has had in Melody's Echo Chamber and other dream/psychic rock projects of the like. Amazing that this was recorded in 1972 as well, each instrument is layered so well in the mix it sounds modern as can be.

A classic in Brazilian music. More need to be explored.

Had no idea what to expect from a MPB album, even though I've heard Milton Nascimento's name before. This was actually a really enjoyable listen. Loved the more upbeat tracks and samba rhythm. San Vicente probably my favourite track just for how interesting it is. Maybe it's just because it reminds me of some of the music in Narcos, but I had an odd thought that some of these would make cool background tracks to a Far Cry montage. Go figure.

Nice and relaxing

I didn't envision giving full marks to a foreign language album, but my appreciation for this grew as I listened. He has the voice of an angel and switches genres competently and with ease. The lyrics I looked up were meaningful. One of the songs was banned in Brazil for being too revolutionary; when you listen to it, it sounds like a happy-go-lucky flower power tune. The contrast is super interesting to me. Best track: Paisagem da Janela
