Reviews (page 6 of 8)

This was a long album to listen to without understanding a word, but the review was interesting. Brazilian pop music produced at the height of a military dictatorship. Interesting to read about attempted censorship and reflect on how an album like this can change public opinion in some ways. Oh, also the music was good, kind of slow.

Overall this is a very woozy dreamy album - slow paced and meandering tipsily through different sounds and arrangements. - Folky/classical acoustic instrumentation: nylon string guitars, pianos, flutes. - Jazzy psych with drums electric bass and drums and a clean tone electric gutiar strumming. - crooner strings + 12 string guitar and horns with a melodic jazzy bass lead. - spaghetti western psychadelic with reverby chords and horns on top. - gentle bedroom-pop with hushed chords and expressive nylon guitar melodies. - jangly upbeat indie-pop with a warbling clean guitar chime leading. - Beatles-eque 'eleanor rigby' strings riffs. - piano ballads. - Far out chaotic soundscapes - fuzzed out guitar over minor7th harmonies and driving bass Despite the wide variety of sounds, there's a coherent relaxed, intimate, and warm feel across the whole album. The vocals throughout are a breathy and dramatic tenor. Something about the melodic phrasing and harmony in Brazilian music really doesn't work for me - combined with the all the intricate chords and complex voicings it never seems to resolve as I'd expect and feels incomplete - tonal ambiguity. That's decades of harmonic acculturation for you, but I ended up liking this a lot more than I expected because of the chill feel and the combination of sounds and styles. Favorites: Dos Cruces, Clube de Esquina No 2, Paisagem de Janela, TREM DE DOIDO

Before generating a daily album to listen to, I always like to play a little game with myself that I’ve affectionately called Will I Have Heard Of This Artist. I had the feeling that I would be familiar with today’s one. Then I generated the album and found I was wrong. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Tudo o Que Você Podía Ser I feel it’s understandable to say that foreign language music is harder to click with in general as, if I don’t understand the lyrics, a lot of the meaning is lost on my unfortunately monolingual brain. There are certainly exceptions to this where something blows me away, but this was not one of them. It was pleasant in a way that wouldn’t feel out of place in a coffee shop expansion to The Sims, but I’m not sure it’s something I’ll be seeking out again. I liked it, but it hasn’t really made an impression.

Middle of the road.

Most decidedly not my cup of tea. Truly unusual. There's a lot of talent and emotion so I'll give it a three, but again, not something I'd typically want to listen to. That said, glad things like this are on the 1001, if they are exceptional examples of their craft, which I'm assuming this is. At least it's not another Byrds album.

Some enjoyable stuff on here . Never been the biggest listener of Brazillian music, but then that's why you sign up to this list isn;t it?

- decent vibes - no idea if the lyrics are good - enjoy the range of styles and sounds

Decent stuff, latin dance party!

Stylistically kind of unfocused, which is harder to follow as a listener when you don't have the benefit of being able to understand the lyrics. Also a bit long, but this was still really enjoyable, a nice summer listen. Fave Songs: Um Girassol Da Cor De Seu Cabelo, Tudo Que Você Podia Ser, Um Gosto De Sol, Paisagem Da Janela, Trem De Doido, Dos Cruces

Neat Brazilian album. A lot of fun tracks, a lot of slow and heartfelt tracks. Not exactly my jam, but I certainly appreciate it.

I really enjoyed the guitar riff on the first track, but the rest is not bossa nova enough for me - bit too folky. Sweet gentle guitar work, but little that makes me return.

I understand Spanish way more then Portuguese so I understood little of the words. Didn't really matter as the music was good. This could, or already has been setbreak music. Reminded me of Jorge Ben Jor was this first?

Foreign music can be tough for me since I’m very much a lyric guy, but I was really digging this. Unfortunately it was way too long and really dragged at the end.

I like this as background music.

Fine for what it was, not my personal taste but not upset I heard it.

Contextual points given. Some songs were vibin.

Áhugaverð plata. Mjög brasilísk en samt með skemmtilegum folk-áhrifum m.t.t. tíðarandans.

It has its moments, and might be a better album if some of the fat was trimmed. Overall, just too much that is not impressive.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would!

It's decent music but I wouldn't listen again.

Brazil baby. Was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed listening to this. Made the morning walk infinitely more enjoyable. Some good musicianship and variety on this album. It did drag on a bit, but overall, good stuff. Hell of a job Milt The next step: cue up Portuguese on Duolingo so I can understand the lyrics.

3. Enjoyed. Might listen again but wouldn't buy.

Pretty middle of the road to me. It was nice to listen to but fairly forgettable.

Brazilian soul folk. Pretty cool. Really wish I knew what the songs were about. Will definitely come back for a few tracks.

Solid sounds and rhythms. Took me by surprise the wide array of good sounds. Had no clue what he was saying for the whole time, which was difficult.

What a varied assortment of music. Soft and smooth, with noticeable English Invasion influences, latin instrumentation, jazz, even some soulful stuff. Really easy to listen, even with the limitation of not understanding the Portuguese lyrics

Muss man mehrmals hören. Knappe drei Sterne?

Ecoute agréable mais long, inégal.

I liked this. Never stayed the same shape for long and was an enjoyable listen

I really enjoyed “O Trem Azul” and a couple of the other tracks were strong as well. Nascimento has a great voice and the album is very well produced.

So hard to rate these. I did enjoy.

⭐️ Paisagem da Janela

Would have given it 3.5 as the good songs were really great, some tosh thou

Pop, folk

Some great moments, lots of boring stuff in between. Wish this was like half as long.

Really enjoyable. Probably not something I'll seek out often, but it puts me in a good place. 7/10

dug the vibes for doing some work

I dig it. Kinda... Música muito calma

I was hoping to drink from the Latin fountain, but this barely filled my cup

Highlights: Tudo a Que Um Girassol Um Gosto Lilia

Nice change up

Not my style, but I enjoyed parts. Hard pans in mixing make some tracks hard to listen to.

Me gusto, tiene muchas cosas en común con los discos de acá en esa época.

me gusta la musica brasileña me hace cosquillas en el cerebro

nice, but not nice enough. Like it, it is vivid and tranquil, maybe too jazzy at times.I Like this, but would buy something else.

Sweet and delicate but so light it sort of flies away and never quite lands.

OK. Not really my kind of this though. Going to keep on my favourites in case I feel like listening to something a bit different

Decent music, not something I would listen to.

maybe that’s why it isn’t so bad

pretty great 3/5

relaxing, good in the background

Not bad, but not something I would rush back to listen to.

It was better than expected, I like two songs but it was mostly because of the melodies. I don't know if this is Brazilian

ayy this is actually pretty good. Though I dont really understand what the songs are about, one song in particular made feel kinda sad.

Un dels discos clàssics de la MPB, amb un Milton Nascimento encara per ser famós i un Lo Borges a càrrec d'uns arranjaments de luxe. La banda que els completa està a la mateixa alçada. Un disc per disfrutar

It's very nice.

Enjoyed the Brazilian Beats

Difficult to rate an album when I don't speak the language. But I liked the music itself and the overall atmosphere / vibe, so I guess 3?

meh. good retail music. nothing memorable.

good brazilian folk but in the end quite annoying

not my favorite style of music, but good craftsmanship.

Brazilian pop and easy listening. Nice background music

Twas funky

Too long but kinda beautiful in places. I’d put this on again for some background music that will sounds good and clear coming out of my good speakers. Really like the quiet simplicity of “Os Povos.” It’s like jazz but not quite. The piano coming in there at the end of “Cais” was pretty terrific, too. (Though why the hard pan to one channel?) Never heard of this dude, but cool stuff. Interesting that Apple Music credits the album to Milton and Lo Borges, implying they’re a duo.

I'm not a big fan of Latino music, but this is an interesting amalgamation of different genres packaged in a neat album with a coherent sound throughout Saved tracks: Tudo Que Você Podia Ser, Saídas e Bandeiras Nº 1, Dos Cruces

Not bad not bad

Always enjoy the variety here

I really enjoy the vocals on this album, the interesting mix of incredible guitar and more electronic sound. There is some element of layers and complexity. I get a lot of emotion from the tracks. For me I wanted more variety, maybe more different vocalists like a female vocal (if there isn't already maybe I just missed it) but I switched off completely so it became nice background music. Probably largely due to the fact that I used to speak Spanish well but mostly forgot all of it by now, perhaps I might have picked up a lot more of the Portuguese lyrics if I remembered more Spanish??

At first I thought this wasn't going to be my thing as I get a bit lost with Spanish music, I imagine mostly because I just don't know it or much about it at all. But as it when on I started to appreciate it more and more and when it got a bit more rocky loved it

Quite fun but not gonna get me listening again

Latin Jazz, entirely in Spanish. I liked the style, good singing voice. Overall decent album

A more contemplative Bossa Nova record that skirts the edges of a smooth jazz upbeat sound and instead focuses on the more sensitive notes and message. I'm sure if one were able to speak Portuguese the lyrics would match the advanced orchaestration and elevate the meaning even further.

Quote enjoyed that. Eclectic. 3

I guess I just don't get it. The musicianship is clearly tops and dude has a great voice but the vibe just completely missed me. I didn't enjoy the super-soft (but periodically dance-hall?) feel of the album. I'm giving it a middling grade because everyone on this album clearly knows their stuff and I really think I'm just missing something here.

i was very sceptical at the first sight, not gonna lie. but i have to admit this album has a bunch of quality music! despite not knowing what the fuck he's singing about (obviously) my encounter with this album was really pleasant. once again i was introduced to excellent instrumental parts which i enjoyed the most. listening to this album is a whole new experience. previous albums were unknown to me, but still, they sounded familiar. in this case, i hear something that is fresh and not yet fully discovered by me. and i like this because it's definitely giving a new perspective for my music taste. the music seems to rely heavily on the cultural background and ethnicity of the artist. i think the music is well composed, but it wouldn't be something i'd go for daily. in some cases i got bored of the sounds that i felt were repeated. it wasn't the best thing i heard in my life but i like the fact that it's something new, probably more than the album itself. i think that my perception would be completely different if i were familiar with the culture because now i feel like i don't fully understand the music and the thought behind it. i have a problem deciding whether i like this one or not. although i appreciate the experience of getting to know this side of music, i'll keep this album in mind. favourite track: "tudo o que voce podia ser" and "me deixa em paz"; least favourite track: "nuvem cigana"

Damn this is smooth.

Had a nice sleep on the bus to this 👍

First a disclaimer - I live in Brazil, and have lived here for 25 years - but so far I have not found any Brazilian music that I really like. Next this album has to be taken in the political context of Brazil in 1972 - at the height of the military dictatorship with very heavy censorship being applied to anything that could be remotely construed as critical of the government/society. Finally it has to be noted that the album is not just by Milton Nascimento - there are two principal collaborators : Lô Borges as cited on the album and also Beto Guedes, additionaly Alaíde Costa sings on Me Deixe em Paz. The album itself is pleasant enough to listen to, I suppose it helps understanding most of the lyrics, but to be honest they are not too deep or meaningful (as they could not be at the time). Nothing stood out to me as being exceptional or bad - overall an OK album, mostly acoustic guitar and voice with Brazilian rhythms.

Enjoyable

Interesting change of pace...nice to listen to. I could not understand a word but it sounded kind.

Once again, I cannot understand the language (Portuguese) . However, the music is good. The first couple of songs are carried entirely by the melody. If the lyrics are good, these are probably great songs.

Un peu space, mais aussi plein de tradition brésilienne. Plein de trucs intéressants donc, mais beaucoup, beaucoup trop long.

This was quite an epic journey! I'm not so much a fan of the foreign language albums or ones that are largely just instrumental, but I enjoyed this one today. It helped me get into a funky frenetic mode as I packed for my big road trip this weekend. Gracias!

Love the sounds of Brazillian music.

Pretty interesting but I doubt I'll be going back to it

pretty solid

An interesting album mixing a wide range of influences - ethnic and international. The Beatles also seem to have left clear marks on this album such as in Nuvem Cigana. There were parts of this album I really enjoyed but others which just didn't sound right to me. In particular, I couldn't warm up to most of the singing. The vocals aren't good enough and they don't always blend well with the music. There are also tracks that just don't go anywhere such as Os Povos. The album is fine background listening, but not good enough for more than that.

Love jazz samba. Wasn’t blown away by anything, but definitely enjoyed it. 3/5

Some interesting bits here and there. Lo Borges has some interesting soul elements. Nascimento plays more traditional Brazilian music. Not really my thing.

I don't understand pretty much any of what I heard but the sound was nice, but again, double albums....long...so some stand outs and some not so much...

Another album I never would have listened to without this list. Saying that... it was bland. 2.5/5

3.5 stars. It was a fine album. Not for me

Pretty good. I vibed to this one.

An interesting one, hard to evaluate on one or two listens

Promising start but slowed down a bit too much toward the end. Also no cuica 1/10.

I was excited for this album but was left a little flat. My fault for expecting something I didn't get. It's also a touch too long.

This is an ambitious project that deserves more than one listen to appreciate. I’ve noted before that Brazilian singers, both male and female have the smoothest most mellifluous voices, and Nacimento is no exception. I was pressed for time but what I heard was very lush and vibrant, so my 3 star rating is probably too conservative.

Shame I can’t understand the lyrics because the music is pleasant to listen to.

Listened to on 7/11/22 3.5/5 Favorite song: Tudo O Que Voce Podia Ser The Portuguese threw me off but when I stopped trying to translate and just enjoyed the music it was beautiful and so fun

Slows down the deeper into the album

More excited about the fact that this was Portuguese language music than the face that it was a double album. Good!

Distintos aires brasileños y un poco de popurrí. Ni fu ni fa.

Didn't understand a single word and still enjoyed it.

Really enjoyed this somewhat surprisingly!

When it's good, it's really good. A bit too long and drawn out for what it is, but there are some beautiful moments within. Not exactly up my alley, but I can appreciate it.

Enjoyed overall.

Fun fact: Milton lends his talents to “Spirit Voices” on Paul Simon’s Latin American inspired album, Rhythm of the Saints.

Ganske bra, men litt under fire.

Nice sounds throughout. I came close to saving a few but they were just a little long or had something that stopped me.

It was fine but I am not sure of the significance and the language barrier didn't help.

Clube da Esquina is a 1972 double album by the Brazilian music artists collective Clube da Esquina, credited to Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges. Considered an important record in the history of Brazilian music, it features arrangements by Eumir Deodato and Wagner Tiso, and conductions by Paulo Moura. The album garnered attention for its engaged compositions and miscellany of sounds. Despite popular belief, the photo on the album cover does not depict Borges and Nascimento as children. It was taken by a member of the collective, Brazilian photographer Cafi (Carlos da Silva Assunção Filho), on the side of a road in the rural northern Rio de Janeiro state. Due to increased public interest in the album's 40th anniversary, a search for the two boys was conducted, successfully identifying them as Antonio Rimes and Antônio Carlos Rosa de Oliveira. Lô Borges (Born Salomão Borges Filho on January 10, 1952) is a Brazilian songwriter, singer, and guitarist. He was one of the founders of Clube da Esquina, a group of musicians that originated in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. He co-authored with Milton Nascimento the album Clube da Esquina in 1972, which was a milestone in Brazilian popular music. Among his most famous compositions are “Paisagem da Janela,” “Para Lennon e McCartney,’ “Clube da Esquina No. 2,” “Trem de Doido,” and “O Trem Azul.” Eumir Deodato de Almeida (Brazilian Portuguese: [ẽʊ̃ˈmiχ deoˈdatu]; born 22 June 1942) is a Brazilian pianist, composer, arranger, and record producer, primarily in jazz but who has been known for his eclectic melding of genres, such as pop, rock, disco, rhythm and blues, classical, Latin and bossa nova. Deodato has arranged and produced more than 500 records for acts such as Frank Sinatra, Roberta Flack, Björk, and Christophe, as well as producing Kool & the Gang's hits "Celebration", "Ladies' Night", and "Too Hot". Deodato was nominated for three Grammy Awards and won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1974 for "Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001)." The song peaked at number 2 on the weekly "Billboard Hot 100" in March 1973. It reached number 7 on the British charts. Wagner Tiso Veiga (born 12 December 1945) is a musician, arranger, conductor, pianist and composer from Brazil. Born in Três Pontas, Tiso learned music theory with Paulo Moura and specialised in keyboards. In 1970, he joined Som Imaginário, working with Milton Nascimento. Tiso and Nascimento were then together in Clube da Esquina, who toured internationally. The group also included Beto Guedes, Toninho Horta and Flávio Venturini. He has also worked on several soundtracks. Paulo Moura (15 July 1932 – 12 July 2010) was a Brazilian clarinetist and saxophonist. Born in São José do Rio Preto, where his father was the maestro of a marching band and encouraged his son to train as a tailor, Paulo instead studied in the National Music School and performed with the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra. He was the first black artist to become first clarinetist in the Municipal Theatre Orchestra. He appeared at Bossa Nova night at Carnegie Hall in 1962 with Sérgio Mendes, the two of them also featuring on Cannonball Adderley's 1962 album, Cannonball's Bossa Nova. He won the Sharp Award for the most popular instrumentalist of the year in 1992. Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈʁi.u d(ʒi) ʒɐˈnejɾu] is one of the 27 federative units of Brazil. It has the second largest economy of Brazil, with the largest being that of the state of São Paulo. The state, which has 8.2% of the Brazilian population, is responsible for 9.2% of the Brazilian GDP. The state of Rio de Janeiro is located within the Brazilian geopolitical region classified as the Southeast (assigned by IBGE). Rio de Janeiro shares borders with all the other states in the same Southeast macroregion: Minas Gerais (N and NW), Espírito Santo (NE) and São Paulo (SW). It is bounded on the east and south by the South Atlantic Ocean. Rio de Janeiro has an area of 43,653 km2 (16,855 sq mi). Its capital is the city of Rio de Janeiro, which was the capital of the Portuguese Colony of Brazil from 1763 to 1815, of the following United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves from 1815 to 1822, and of later independent Brazil as a kingdom and republic from 1822 to 1960. The state's 22 largest cities are Rio de Janeiro, São Gonçalo, Duque de Caxias, Nova Iguaçu, Niterói, Campos dos Goytacazes, Belford Roxo, São João de Meriti, Petrópolis, Volta Redonda, Magé, Macaé, Itaboraí, Cabo Frio, Armação dos Búzios, Angra dos Reis, Nova Friburgo, Barra Mansa, Barra do Piraí, Teresópolis, Mesquita and Nilópolis. Rio de Janeiro is the smallest state by area in the Southeast macroregion and one of the smallest in Brazil. It is, however, the third most populous Brazilian state, with a population of 16 million of people in 2011 (making it the most densely populated state in Brazil) and has the third longest coastline in the country (after those of the states of Bahia and Maranhão). In the Brazilian flag, the state is represented by Mimosa, the beta star in the Southern Cross (β Cru).

I think what strikes me most about this album is that it doesn't fit within the confines of what I would think Brazilian music is. The Samba sensation of the 60s that introduced 'Girl from Ipanema' and forced its way into the works of great singers such as Frank Sinatra is not present here. It's indescribable really, I pick up a lot of smooth jazz, Mexicali, Morricone and American pop with a Spanish / Portuguese vocal track. I don't know anything about Milton Nascimento to formulate an actual reaction to his music, but this was a pleasant listen. 3.5/5.

I liked this. Almost liked every track. Great background music to work to.

Op een of andere vreemde manier kon ik dit best goed hebben.

Bij tijd en wijle had ik er genoeg van, maar omdat ik vind dat er te weinig wereldmuziek/diversiteit in deze lijst zit toch drie sterren.

To my shame I have never come across Milton N. before. Infectious in parts, haunting in others.

Its all very pleasant but not really my thing

It was fine, I guess? I'm not equipped with the musical or cultural knowledge to properly judge this.

Eh…OK I suppose.

Very long, although some nice ideas and melodies.

Had some interesting moments but overall I found myself getting bored. Not as poppy as Sergio Mendes for example.

This one started with a bang! I honestly thought I was going to love it but found that it dragged a bit across the middle/end. 3/5

Disco muy versátil en géneros, a ratos muy setentero, funk, progresivo y a ratos tranquilo, de balada y pocos instrumentos.

Double album really long, but the songs are quick and varied, so doesn’t get boring.

Too long and loses focus because of it

A fun morning listen, but doesn't hold a candle to some of the other cuban-esque music we have gotten on this list. Enjoyable, but forgettable.

Eclectic, baroque, folky

i wish i knew portuguese

Haunting, beautiful but very long and at times impenetrable - the language barrier doesn’t help - I’m sure there are pleasures to discover in the words but unfortunately cannot appreciate them.

Ok that's two Brazilian albums in a row, wasn't expecting that. This is really nice and inoffensive, doesn't make my hangover angry on a Sunday morning so that's nice. Bit long though. 3/5.

We're in France, we speak french.

Quiet a nice album, a fairly relaxing listen. "Paisagem da Jenela" and "Saídas e Bandeiras nº 2" the two best songs on the album in my opinion.

It sounds pretty neat and there is a lot of interesting culture behind the album on Wikipedia, but for my own listening pleasure it's not my thing.

This one was pretty catchy. Plenty of musical highs, and lows only equaled in scuba diving.

Easy Listening :)

Prima latin album, best wel lekker

I liked this album, but it did feel kind of same-y after a while. I considered the lyrics in a different language as another instrument, which was pretty good. It just didn't move me as much as I was expecting to, as I had heard some of Milton N's work before. Mostly just the acoustic guitar work. *shrug*

I enjoyed it but not sure if I'd ever really go back to it. I worry there's a bias creeping in because it's in Portuguese and I can't connect with the lyrics. It's clearly not a 5 and worth at least a 3. First track was great. Not sure any others struck the same nerve even though it was a good listen. With more patience maybe this would be a 4.

Eh...it was fine. Not sure why I had to hear this before I die. Probably would help if I knew what they were saying, so I suppose I have an appreciation for how the 1001 albums thing can be challenging for non-English speakers. The music was good but nothing unique or special to me. Giving it a 3 because there was nothing wrong with it, but no more because I'm fine with never listening to it again.

Cool tunes, wish I spoke Portuguese or whatever that was.

12/16/2021 Today's Album: "Clube Da Esquina" by Milton Nascimento - This album is really difficult to review as well. It is really excellently performed and written. I love all of the melodies and beats on all of these songs and they are all very charming, but being in some latin language, it get's pretty difficult to follow. I think I that is all I really have to say about this one. Score: 5/10 Great but I can no speak the language Highlights: all I guess?

ecumenical, atemporal, dissonant! what more is there to say

Good beats 3.5/5

Upbeat

Distintos aires brasileños y un poco de popurrí. Ni fu ni fa.

Found this a good vibe

Nice enough

Not as fun as I was expecting

Not hugely into samba type stuff, but this had some magic moments… as ever with these things; I can’t particularly get on board with double albums. Self edit for gods sake!

Not really memorable at all, possibly because I didn't understand the lyrics but there were some nice guitar parts

Pretty fun and interesting to hear another language style of music.

Jazzy Brazilian vibes all around, a really interesting album

Hard to fully appreciate without understanding the language, but clearly full of emotion and an enjoyable listen.

A lovely album with limited appeal. Moments of real beauty but I can't imagine a setting where I'd ever listen again.

I was not expecting to like this much, but it was really good. As Márcio Borges so clearly stated, "Naturally, the critics were terrible. They didn't understand a bit of the inter-racial, international, interplanetary ecumenism proposed by the atemporal dissonances from Bituca." My thoughts exactly. 3 stars.

Correct. à réécouter, j'étais peut-être pas dans le mood. Probablement une bonne trame sonore pour une soirée tranquille.

It was average. 3/5 stars.

Never heard of this but interesting. The pop songs in particular.

The change in audio quality/tone when Cais changed over to largely piano REALLY threw me off for a second

I can dig this kind of music in moderation, but over an hour is a tough prospect, especially when there's a language barrier. Still, pleasant to listen to.

Quite alright brazilian pop which definitely is not my wheelhouse. There are actually 2 artists on this album, Milton Nascimento to whom this album is assigned on this site and Lô Borges who only has 4 songs on the album but in my opinion by far steals the show.

Not really my thing, but I enjoyed this a lot.

Not sure this is 1 of 1001 albums i needed to hear - still good though and better than several of the other albums i've had to run through here

Pleasant to listen to, dig the music. Vocals in Portuguese didn't bother me, after all, Rammstein is a favorite band of mine also and I don't understand German. Probably only a 3 just because I don't see me ever listening to this again.

Awesome instrumentation, and abrupt mood shifts within one tune - something I haven't heard before in this kind of music. The guitar playing is great, with tasty chord voicings and sparing use of dissonance.

Nice change of pace..I liked the variety of each song

Nice brazilian music, beginning was much better imo

Although I couldn't understand the lyrics. There were some catchy riffs in there.

Esta interesante, algo tranquilo. Le doy 3 estrellas y mucho porque es el segundo disco latino que me toca en el listado

As a double album..... it's a committed listen but I enjoyed the Brazilian tinge to what was a pretty relaxing 90 minutes or so

First song a banger, latin summer vibes

There were some very good tracks in this album, smothered by the other 15. [Language barrier]

A nice album that made me wish I could understand the lyrics to fully appreciate it.

Liked it even though I don’t speak much Spanish.

-"Cravo E Canela" was catchy -"Pelo Amor De Deus" sounds cool -Some cool guitar or synth on "Trem De Doido" -Overall very nice songs, just not really in my style

Rich Spanish guitars, and a passionate voice. I wish I knew what the lyrics were. I enjoyed, but probably won't listen again.

Will listen soon

Grateful for more world music, one of the things I wanted out of doing this project. Bit too contemporary for me, couple of nice bits in there. 3.5

Gutes Album aber so richtig weit vorbei an, dem was ich so höre!

its ok

Quite refreshing!

Some nice tunes and great guitar work, wouldn't re-listen really

"Você pega o trem azul, o Sol na cabeça O Sol pega o trem azul, você na cabeça O Sol na cabeça" (O trem azul) "Se eu cantar não chore não É só poesia" (Um girassol da cor do seu cabelo) "Porque se chamava moço Também se chamava estrada" (Clube da esquina n.2) Siempre contenta cuando me toca escuchar algo que no está en inglés.

A nice listen. Not sure I'll listen again but a pleasant change to listen to something I'd never even heard of.

Got that earlier 70s sense of groove. Tudo O Que has my interest. Cravo E Canela is a good tune. Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo has this wacky break section in the middle of the song and comes back with authority. Side 3 sort of breezed by me. Side 4 has some really weird parts. I would say side 1 and maybe side 2 deserve a relisten.

I've been really interested in Brazilian music as of late. This album starts off really well, but then it gets a bit "baroque". Don't know if I'll get back to it anytime soon.

Si me gustó

Si aguantó. Simplemente ameno.

A classic in Brazilian music. More need to be explored.

Songs kind of run together since I don't speak Portuguese, but it still is an interesting album.

Fav Song: Tudo O Que Voce Podia Ser

Not bad. Might give it another listen.

Not bad, didn't know the language it was in so had to look that up on wikipedia

This album was good, but it didn't really stand out in any way to me. I think it would have benefited from being shorter 3/5

Had no idea what to expect from a MPB album, even though I've heard Milton Nascimento's name before. This was actually a really enjoyable listen. Loved the more upbeat tracks and samba rhythm. San Vicente probably my favourite track just for how interesting it is. Maybe it's just because it reminds me of some of the music in Narcos, but I had an odd thought that some of these would make cool background tracks to a Far Cry montage. Go figure.

Ja ok. Brasiliansk popmusik med undertoner af Beatles.

This isn’t music it’s art

Patchy but in place great. Nice to encounter something new from the list

Probably would have enjoyed if was more Bossa nova and upbeat

More less

This was pleasant and very interesting. I want to think that I will revisit it.

I don't like world music, so this was definitely not for me. However it was a little bit interesting at least.

No this brazilian bossa nova or what it is, is not for me.

Didn't do anything for me.

5/10 Raro, no se si malo, pero no me termino de gustar, hub un punto en el que me canso la verdad

Not my thing at all. Maybe if you like this style it's amazing, but to me it does nothing and no desire to listen to it again.

Entertaining. Sounds timeless.

diff language but i like some songs' rhythm

extra star for portuguese

2 sterren.

This is a pretty chill album, despite it being a pretty long one. Overall, it was alright leaving it in the background while I was doing other things.

Cravo e canela good. I don’t like sad Spanish music that much, but still not bad, just not my choice of Spanish music.

Kind of glided over me in a way that makes me doubt I’ll remember much more than the cover, which I’ll remember only because I feel that if I saw this in a second hand record store without ever having heard it, I’d immediately pass over without a thought. I suppose I may also recall the sensation that this music has the sweet gentleness of lemon-lime soda, but without anything hard mixed in for substance. Of course, this could be simply because I don’t speak Portuguese. I have no idea what they’re singing about. I do understand what Motörhead is saying, though, and that doesn’t mean I care to absorb the meanings of the words- I just feel straight up everclear punch. The case that there aren’t enough non-us and non-uk albums on this list makes me feel that this was either hugely influential in Brazil and I completely lack context, or that it’s very box-checky. Along with the 1001 list, I’m also listening to the ten best albums by country for every country in the world on rate your music, and I’ve got to say, a million other international albums, all in languages I can’t understand, slap harder than this. Why Clube da esquina?

Sentimental

It was okay. I was hoping for something closer to Tropicalia and Caetano Veloso or a similar vibe or influence, and was disappointed in that regard. Didn't really strike a chord with me.

Probably should be a 3 star. The music was decent. Not something I’d revisit. Or really ever listen to.

First couple of songs were ok but it got boring pretty fast. Quite enjoyed the few songs by Lo Borges, though.

Not bad but I struggle to enjoy songs when I don’t understand the language.

This album is super light and breathy, it’s definitely not short, in fact I’d say it’s way too long. But sincerely the album is just kinda pleasant to put on. It’s not gunna stick with me and I’m gunna forget most if not all the songs on this album. And I obviously won’t remember the lyrics cause I don’t speak the language, but what I will remember that if I need something chill and soft to listen to I’ll remember that this exists. But it’s just alright honestly, it had orchestral moments but I wasn’t really won over.

I was hopeful this would be a wonderful 1001 find for me. It is outrageous in this day and age for me to be oblivious to an artist I have now heard described as Brazil’s greatest musician. I have broad tastes and an adventurous attitude to music, yet cultural and language barriers have kept me and Nascimento unconnected until now. There are elements of MPB (Música popular Brasileira) that give it a high propensity to fit right in with my tastes, but unfortunately, song after song, I found this album unappealing. I was either expecting the wrong thing, or Milton is just not my guy. I wanted irresistible grooves and I got flaccid rhythms. I wanted vibrant guitar but got unconvincing strumming. Where should have been unforgettable melodicism was meandering tuneage; I didn’t need wall to hooks, but I had imagined at least some undeniable beauty. A damp squib for me. Best Brazilian musician? Not even the best Brazilian with the surname Nascimento (but that was always gonna be a big ask tbh)

Album #61: Clube Da Esquina - Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges Genre (W): MPB, baroque pop, folk, jazz pop No singles. I have listened to this album once before. Thoughts?: I enjoyed some of the music. I’m not going to review it based on me not understanding what they were saying, however, I felt the music and tones couldn’t save the album enough to give this anything at or above three stars. Favorite songs: Tudo Que Você Podia Ser, Cais, O Trem Azul, Nuvem Cigana, Dos Cruces, Paisagem Da Janela, Saídas e Bandeiras Nº 2, Um Gosto De Sol,

I only made it through half but I liked it.

I found myself being generally underwhelmed but whenever I was enjoying myself it was a Lô Borges track - so I don’t think this is a must listen album but I reckon they’re a must listen artist. So I will exploring more of their back catalogue and who knows, more of their stuff might pop up here along the way!

Decent album. A nice change from all of the rap I’ve been listening to. Not really my jam, but it was fine.

Gaat echt alle kanten op

This is the third or fourth album from Brazilian artists that I've had over the last couple of weeks. It's really hard for me to rate these or have any thoughts about how good they are. I'm not familiar with the music at all and because I don't understand the lyrics, it's hard to judge anything. I can say that the music on this album was not what I would consider to be typical Brazilian music. It definitely had a jazzy and pop feel to it.

too many tracks. got way too repetitive.

2 just not my kind of music

Another one of these albums that sits in a genre I just wouldn’t listen to, feels like background mood music for a bar to me. It’s perfectly fine but doesn’t hold my attention and once it had finished I didn’t retain any memory of specific tracks. 2.2

Never found Portuguese the most lyrical of languages. I listened to two songs then went "nope, I'm sorry, I just can't today." My fault, probably no fault of this album.

This guy clearly is talented and the music is not unpleasant. But there's nothing to appeal to me here to make me bother listening again. It's probably kind of hard to get into this unless you understand Portuguese.

I usually like Brazilian music, but this one was a little slow for me. Not really my thing. 2/5

I have not heard this before. Some songs sound familiar from when I got into Brazilian psych a few years ago, I’m pretty certain Trem De Doido is on a comp I have and several others must have come up in a tropicalia mix, although I wouldn’t consider any of these tropicalia. There’s interesting instrumentation on a lot of these that I like, but a lot of the songs seem listless and unfocused, where they pick up and then drop off to nothing. The slower acoustic only songs seem passionless, they have that quiet vocal that lots of bossa nova singers do but something seems missing. Also it could be me that’s missing something. apparently this is considered the best Brazilian album ever, but there’s only a few songs that I really like and the rest are either just decent or almost unfinished. I think this album could be helped by cutting some songs down to where it’s not a double album. Or maybe this particular album is not for me.

I tried, I really did. But this album was pretty annoying. The first song was decent but the rest I couldn’t handle. His voice was really grating. At least it varied musically from song to song, and that kept it somewhat interesting. For that I’ll give it a (2)

I'm all in favor of non-English albums, but this one bored me to death.

latin singer/songwriter, 1972 -> 2

Hmm, this wasn't what I was expecting. And I didn't really like the mix of straight pop and Brazilian influenced tinges. Not upset I had to listen to it, but I won't be going back a second time.

Pretty innocuous album. It slipped into the background pretty quick for me.

Nicht mein Stil.

Not really for me to be honest

I don’t mind something I’ve never heard of and don’t understand. And instrumentally, there’s lots here to pique the interest and some nice vibes. But I’m finding the voice a bit nothing and lots of production choices odd. Songs that appear to be in full flow just… fade out. Or pan entirely to one channel. I don’t quite feel able to get immersed into the music as it feels like an incoherent, rushed-together compilation.

4.0/10

Nothing special here. Found myself tuning out. Just not for me.

The wikipedia page talks about the "mixture of genres and influences" and this sounds like it has *all* the genres and influences, thrown into a bag and pulled out at random on every bar. Occasionally, this works. More often, it's a mess, with amateurish recording and an unfortunate fondness for dull balladry, and one that goes on far too long.

Back to back obscure Brazilian albums!? The agony continues, what an 0-fer week this has been with the Top1001, not a single album should have been on this list and today's is the cherry on top. Absolutely not my jam but I listened to it all. This one at least has the listener counts that yesterday's didn't even come close to, and this guy can actually sing, there's guitar at least. 36M people have listened to "Tudo O Que Voce Podia Ser" for what I don't know. "O Trem Azul" has 16M listens and was a tone deaf meandering song. Overall, maybe it's the language barrier and not understanding anything he's singing about, but it was boring with no hooks, never made me want to get up and dance, no kick ass musical moments. I guess I could have this playing in the background if I were in another room. I just don't understand how this could be considered an album I must hear before I die. 2 stars cause I gave the even worse one 1 star yesterday.

For the listeners it is made for, I’m sure this is a top notch album. It’s melodic and groovy and moves from song to song with purpose. Just not my thing. It’s still just kinda dull. I don’t like dull. But for his genre? I’m sure it works

Good not great. Probably good music to read a book by, as the lyrics wouldn't distract me. Again, my Portuguese failed me here... Probably closer to 2 1/2 but there ya go.

Good, but had a hard time getting into it

Never heard this before despite knowing what I thought was a good amount of Brazilian music. Didn’t really catch my ear the same way as other Brazilian music has and I don’t know the context for why this is important and possibly beloved.

I like the instrumentation but obviously cang appreciate the lyrics, although listenable the sound isn't enough to make me want to listen again.

Not my favourite album but definitely found it interesting. There is nothing objectively bad about it, maybe just not my style. I didn’t particularly enjoy that the vocals sounded harsh at some points and after a while the whole thing just sounded like noise to me and I found myself constantly pausing for breaks. Maybe I’m just being harsh though, jazz isn’t really for me.

Nothing bad here, generally pleasant, but not super interesting to me. Possibly I’m not familiar enough with Brazilian music to appreaciate it.

Thr acoustic guitar was nice to listen to but that voice... yikes. Horribly out of tune

Quite vibrant but not my vibe. A long listen.

Not generally a fan of the south American jazzy samba thing. This didn't really grab me at all. Was nice enough in the background but nothing stood out as special. 2

Odd 0 just odd Latin music.

Nie všetky albumy si musím vypočuť až do konca. Asi by som ho nahradil niečím iným...

Cool but not my thing

Not something I would normally listen to.

All a bit disappointing really. I was hoping for something a bit lively, there’s been some good Brazilian stuff on the list, however this never really got above tepid. It has a dream like quality even through the subtlety different styles which has a certain appeal, and a couple of brief places it started to get a bit psychy with appropriate guitars attached, but alas, it was not to be in any lasting form.

I get excited when a “world music” album appears on the list. Unfortunately this one, for me is a little mediocre. It’s ok and I liked listening to it but it didn’t excite me and make me want to listen again.

Never heard of these fellows. This album cover/decade of release is throwing me. Nascimento is a vaguely hispanic name. Could this be a bossa nova album? MPB. Baroque pop. Jazz pop. I guess I wasn't completely off in my prediction - the ghost of bossa nova haunts this album pretty heavily. This runtime is complete overkill if I've ever seen it. With these kinds of atmospheric albums I want something which is easygoing, soothing and, above all else, CONCISE. It should be illegal for these albums to run for longer than 35 minutes. Anything above that length causes me to shift my gaze, claw at my skin and convulse in pure angst as the songs roll by without me noticin. I had to take a break from this album when I got to side 2 of LP2. I just wasn't following anything being served to me. All that being said, there are some moments of undeniable quality in here - they're just undercut by the sheer volume which is on here. I quite like the dreamier, more cosmic aspects of the songs. The influences and general sound of this album are very specific to the part of the world that they came from, which caused me to look at Latin America through a completely different lens. I imagined myself walking through a seaside village on a cold summer's morning as the dim morning light peeked over the rooftops while I listened to this. "Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser" is pretty good. That acoustic guitar is lively, and the vocals are matched nicely with it. "O trem azul" is another good cut. The spacey atmosphere is pretty fantastic, and not a pivot I was expecting. The warm guitars heavily carry the song, though the harmony between the lead and backing vocals is also very nice. "Club de esquina no.2" has, once again, a very nice acoustic guitar performance. The muted, mellow backing vocals are the strongest aspect of the song, however. Book time. Launched the careers of all involved. Many South American influences. This was an okay listen and I'm favourable to the few world music picks that are on this list, so I guess I don't need much more than that. I cosign this inclusion.

Couldn't relate but sounded pleasant

I'm sure this is objectively good, it juat really doesn't appeal to me.

Not for me. Compare vs Santana latinesque genius and it’s weak. Could be background music in the right mood - so 2 not 1.

idk man

It was OK, albeit a bit repetitive. I suppose it doesn't help that I don't speak Portuguese (though there was one Spanish song in there, too).

Not my sort of thing

Was ok, but not something I would listen to now

Well, that wasn't enjoyable for me. I found it incredibly irritating and a bit all over the place. I do appreciate that it's been composed and performed by very competent musicians, but I just didn't like it.

Not for me

I enjoyed how different this was from other albums but not really by cup of tea. The last song was my favorite-um Gosto de SOL.

Tudo o Que Voĉe Podia Ser Cravo e Canela

Maybe it's a grower, but I didn't enjoy myself :(

I feel like I wanted to like this album more than I did; so many of the tracks just blended together into ambient filler. I'm sure this would be more enjoyable with subsequent listens, but on first pass there's a few standout moments with a lot of forgettable parts in between. Top tracks: Clube Da Esquina No2, Os Povos

meh 2/5

Started off strong, soon got boring.

Couldn't connect with it. I think Brazilian music isn't for me. At least, anything that slightly resembles Bossa Nova. His voice is fine but everything else felt off. It just drifted away from me.

Not bad but not my thing

Musically it's well done, but I couldn't get into it.

Not really up my alley but I don’t hate

Not really my speed. Did like a few tracks.

One of those I see the vision but not for me kinda albums.

Not for me at all.

This sounds like mediocre 70s music for the background. I’m hoping it gets better. The end of track one borrowed from Star Trek a little bit. Track two was ok. Track three seems more interesting. But there still something about the sound that just feels generic. I’m about halfway now and it’s better. The further this goes the better it gets. Now it feels like a copy of the eagles a little. Lots of influences here
