A+
Finally another album that actually belongs on a list of must listens. While not something I listen to all the time, it's influential, creative, and fun to put on.
So much variety compared to the greatest hits.
I love the music this people make
NOICEEEE
Kult, ganz gross
Early album of the band as a three piece. All great musicians but Andy Summers' guitar is important. Obviously in the title but there is a big reggae influence that is not in later albums. There are also a few Stewart Copeland written songs that are weird but good.
Regatta De Blanc is the second album from the Police, a three piece band from London. The Police play a style of pop rock that weaves elements of jazz and reggae into post-punk songs. This album includes their first chart-topping singles, and helped propel the Police toward international stardom. The Police's work is typically edgy, driven post-punk, but their first very successful singles have a gentle reggae beat: "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon." The interesting mix the band created - and the range they were capable of within that mixture - help the Police become one of the more successful pop acts of all time.
I loved it
Great
4.5 Torn whether this is 5* or 4* territory. I think it has to be the former. The police are a cracking bad. 5 great albums, although each does have a bit of filler. I think this is the least filler-ey one though, and the filler that is there (eg. the title track) isn't that bad. But the good ones... Wow. The obvious classics such as Message, Beds too big, Walking on the moon, but quite a few hidden (I think) gems in there - Contact, Bring on the night, Any other day. Phenomenal stuff, I know these were massive but I feel like they should be involved in a lot more discussion nowadays for top of acts of all time.
Great stuff.
Really enjoyed listening to this again. The hits are great and so are some of the lesser known songs. IMHO this has aged surprisingly well.
Best album by The Police
Bien.
Fresh lyrics. Rithyn contagious .
One of my favorite albums. Short, sweet, and leaves you wanting more.
helps that im super familiar with The Police already, this album just solidifies my love for them further. Thank you Community S3EP4
More rock
Enjoyed this
Great memories of the 80’s
Ok
Amazing album with lots of incredible classics but also few lesser known songs that I've rediscovered
great album, loved the singles but also like the rawness and youth in the music.
I discovered a little while back while reviewing Synchronicity that it turns out I know precisely one song - no more, no less - from each Police album. In the case of Regatta De Blanc, that song is obviously "Message in a Bottle", which is a great opener to what is a really solid and enjoyable album start to finish. Last time I praised The Police for their consistency, which feels even better on this album. Rather than one great track and a slew of "just good" ones, Regatta De Blanc feels more like an album of great tracks I just don't know yet. Is this their greatest work? I don't know, and only two of their albums are on the list, so this is the last of them I'll be reviewing. Still, I like this a lot.
the more i listen to the police, the more their sound is growing on me. i love this album. though i still don't understand how they managed to become one of the biggest bands of their time, they are everything but mainstream.
You got your "Message in a Bottle" and your "Walking on the Moon", and those are all-time classics, obviously. But there's so much other good stuff in here; "It's Alright For You" is an underrated favorite of mine, and "Bring On the Night" and "The Bed's Too Big Without You" are both bangers. And then, on side 2, we get a trio of Stewart Copeland's songs, which are deliberately a bit goofy but also musically very interesting. It's diverse and energetic and just 100% solid, and explains why the Police were on their way to becoming the biggest band in the world.
More upbeat
Quite possibly their best record.
This first album from the Police came out when I was 25 years old. It is a classic and still holds up well.
Really enjoyed this one. Compared to the other Police album the generator has given me (Synchronicity) I think Reggatta De Blanc has a much more consistently good qualoty where as Sync was more "peaks and valleys" in terms of my enjoyment. Bring on the Night was far and away my favorite though
An album I absolutely loved when released. Never off my turntable and was quickly downloaded onto a C60 tape to be played in my car. The means to do this and a cassette tape in a car were at the cutting edge in those days. Anyhow this allowed me to blast out the wonderful thumping bass lines of Walking On The Moon as I drove around in my Fiat 127. A habit I actually abhor nowadays committed by those cretins in blacked out Beemers polluting the air with their shit hip hop rap. But back then it all seemed so normal and perfect. All these memories came flooding back as I listened today. It’s been a while since I did this causing me not only to admonish myself for this omission but as this was the albums first spin on my sound system (as opposed to my Pye radiogram back in the day) I realised how well produced the album is. The presence of the aforementioned Walking On The Moon, Message In A Bottle, the title track and The Beds Too Big Without You make this an exceptional album which means a lot to me personally. 5/5 25/2/26
Incrivel album do começo ao fim
Better than the first album. This one has more Stewart Copeland songs.
iconic. brilliant.
love the police
One of my favorite Police albums. Andy Summer's contribution is amusing.
I was torn between four stars and five but I think I'm going to side with Bingo on this one. This album is simply classic. Tight rhythms, influential mix of new wave, reggae, punk, pop. Many well written songs on the album and I could let Bring On the Night wash over me all day.
a few big hits
An excellent ‘sophomore’ album where you can hear the three individual players and their contributions as clear as day. Two number one hit singles, a Grammy winning instrumental title track, a funny Stewart Copeland lyric (on any other day) and two other classics in ‘beds too big without you’ and ‘bring on the night’. Just fabulous - and Copeland co writes 4 of the tracks!
ACAB !! But The Police 💯 that reggae vibe 🤌🏿
Classic love the police
4.5 - * Fantastic album! Strong start with ‘Message in a Bottle’ and the titular song. Noteable mention to ‘deathwish’
Lots of gems here beyond the hits.
STING
Wow, didn't expect to like it as much as I did. I was expecting a few hits and the rest as filler, but almost all the songs were quite good, and the hits were very very good. I find this to be the best reggae-style album I've heard on the project so far: not committed to the genre's cliche's, just taking the best from it and fusing it with pop-rock, producing something that's actually listenable. The lyrics aren't as pretentously political/spirital yet shallow as in other reggae albums. I can imagine how the fake accent might annoy some but for me it worked. A little serendipitous momemnt: I was listening to the album while walking around the city, and the city was plastered with advertisements for a String written musical, with his face staring at me. I looked back and thought, you did good here, old boy.
Message in a bottle. Independently produced.
Top tier from start to finish. Not much else to say - I grew up listening to Sting and The Police, and although I'd not heard this record in full until now, it slams.
I knew The Police's hits, but this album blew me away with how great it is, genuinely fantastic from start to finish.
14/01/2026 *1. message in a bottle - immediately liking the guitar and bass.... kinda jangly... like the vocals, but not sure about the accent??? is this appropriation? loving the prechorus. and also the chorus! *2. reggatta de blanc - loving the drumming!! guitar is really great.... kinda dreamy. very dreamy now. like the synth? electronic noise in the back. love how it's building up... bass and guitar and drums together are phenomenal! *3. it's alright for you - liking the punky vibe at the start!!! kinda jazzy bass.. instruments are great again!!! cannot tell if he is trying to put on a rasta accent again or american one.... suits the song though! guitar solo bangs!!!!!!! 4. bring on the night - liking the vibe of this one.... bass is great again :) liking the lyrics of all these songs as well. liking the screechy guitar.... bassline with it is real nice. 5. deathwish - love the drums at the start. loving the tempo change! bass <3 like the descending, droning synth(?) in the back of some parts.... 6. walking on the moon - liking the drums and bass at the start.... very noir-ish.... who told sting to make an album where he put on a jamaican accent..... not as enjoyable as the other songs, but still reaallly enjoyed listening to it. *7. on any other day - like the spoken intro immediately into that music!! really loving the vocals!! reaaallly great lyrics! just fun!!! bassline in the chorus is killlllleeerr <3 drums are fantastic! 8. the bed's too big without you - bassline is sooo good again!!! liking the maracas... drums are great!! *9. contact - ooooh loving it immediately.... bloody love that bass with the synth.... reminds me of the stranglers.... drumming is superb as ever.... very jangly! *10. does everyone stare - liking the piano and the bass together... liking the opera recording in the back... drums are great as well.. liking the voyeuristic lyrics... very peeping tom. 11. no time this time - drumming in intro is great! love the energy!!! chorus is great!!! drumming is great!!! guitar and bass are great!!! love the ending! really loved this one, definitely not sure if the accent ages well (not sure if it was ok when it was released either), but the music is phenomenal! not sure if it deserves five stars, but i loved every song on the album and feel that four is too low :)
:)
mesečina bato... meni je ovo sasvim neloš album, premda ne njihov najbolji. u dvojbi da li da dam četiri ili pet. najbolje stvari: "bring on the night", "the bed's too big without you" (!), "does everyone stare". s druge strane pjesma "on any other day" uopće na paše. budući da nema drugih njihovih albuma, dat ću za njih ovomu pet, ko ga jebe
Really enjoyed this re-listen. The first time I thought the quality dipped on the second half of the album but I didn't feel that way this time around.
I love the police so much
Love the Police
A really great album built on some fantastic drumming.
Regatta de Blanc is a fun record and Police haters are lame imo. I have this shirt.
Haven't heard this album in a long time. Brought me right back to when I was in college!
Loved the drums and instruments in this
Excellent. One of my favourites
Alway liked this one. Holds up darn well. Although Sting's vocals can tend to irritated after a while.
Great record, listened obsessively in HS
Insane album the continuity and progression of the sobgs is absolutely mindblowing all tied together yet all are very different. As an album this is pure conceptual gold
I have heard about The Police before, especially from the drummer Stewart Copeland. But I never got the chance to listen to any of their albums, until now! And this one is some good stuff!
One of my favourite trios of all time. So many classics here!
Fitting for the 1,0001 list.
Im def revisiting very good
I hadn't listened to this album in many years. Mainly when I hear songs by The Police it's singles from playlists and they are never skipped. I was a bit hesitant when this came up today, as I hoped I'd enjoy the record as much as I recalled from back in the day. Very happily I did really enjoy playing this again after so many years. And the remastered version sounds amazing, with Stewart Copeland's drums really coming through so powerfully. I don't think there is a bad song on the album, and there are great ones like the singles Message In A Bottle, Walking On The Moon, and The Bed's Too Big Without You but also some of the other tracks such as Regatta De Blanc and Deathwish. This was a really fun listen and I'm glad I got the chance to revisit an album that kind of got lost in the shuffle.
Muy bueno
fena keyifli
This is, quite simply, one of the best records released in my lifetime, if not ever. It is undeniable. The performance, the songwriting and the production on this record are top-notch.
Now THIS is music you must listen to before you die. Needs more than 5 stars.
More polished than their debut with the arrangements and songwriting up a notch too, even if a little less energetic. Message and Walking were great singles and album highlights, Regatta (instrumental) even got them a Grammy. Still sounds good today, probably one of their best LPs and well worth a listen.
Love this album, the Police are one of my favorite bands.
The classic 5
Classic 80's rock from The Police. I love this LP.
Enjoyable and nostalgic, will listen again.
Great album Iconic songs Good album cohesion Iconic sound
Top album. 5/5
Very punchy album. Great groovy bass lines and shimmering guitar work. Great listen, really enjoyed the compositions and vocals.
Love it
The Police har alltid vært for flinke for punk.
Stewart Copeland top 5 batteristo oat
Masterpiece.
love
As a longtime fan of The Police, revisiting Reggatta De Blanc is always a pleasure. Andy Summers' guitar work shines throughout the album, delivering unique riffs that really stand out. Stewart Copeland's drumming is equally impressive, with innovative rhythms that drive the songs forward. Tracks like "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon" highlight their ability to blend rock and reggae effortlessly. I'm a little jaded on Sting due to his post Police work, but this album proves why he is as regarded as he is. Though I don't listen to them as much as I used to, this album reminds me why I loved their music in the first place. If you haven't checked it out in a while, it's definitely worth a revisit!
I loved this record back in the day and I still do now! Probably my favortie LP by The Police.
Every time I listen to the Police I wonder why I don’t do it more. This album, like their others, brings the intricacies of jazz together with the fun and bounce of reggae while retaining catchy pop sensibilities. It’s also got that creative edginess of new wave. All three are great musicians, but it took me far too long to recognize how a mixing Stuart Copeland is. One the best in the business, at least in the pop and rock world. The guy just has incredible intuition and feel for what a song needs without being an overplaying showboat.
amazing
Right out the gate with Message In A Bottle and I really liked the rest of it, particularly Walking On The Moon. Also, this was a great showcase in Copeland's drumming ability - absolutely stellar. 9/10.
Incredible album. Love The Police anyway though. Does anyone else feel math rock vibes from some of the drumming? Even if not it’s noticeably badass.
I mean, one of my favorites all time!
Echos and effects, reggae mixed with post-punk and some pop. 80’s style hybrid with great drumming, singing, and guitar work. Excellent rhythm parts, fun bounce. Numerous songs also on their greatest hits completion Every Breath You Take: The Singles a few years later.
Ein großartiges Album. Auch heute noch tolle Lieder.
I can't think of any other band who disappointed me as much as The Police. My first exposure to them - Can't Stand Losing You on Whistle Test '78. Phenomenal. First two albums - Outlandos d'Amour then this one - absolutely exceptional. Three tremendous musicians, great songs. Welcome to the future. Then the future turns out to be Zenyatta Mondatta and the sanitised pulp that followed. Wrapped Around Your Finger? Give it a rest. So, in memory of the end of 70s I'll listen to Od'A then RdeB and enjoy them. And stop there.
An all time album for me, one that I share with anyone who will sit still long enough
So The Police, so good
I knew only one of the songs beforehand, I found the album quite soothing and relaxing, and strangely I never noticed how the drums have such an importance before, I often listen to songs where the vocals that precedence, but for some reason I was quite hypnotized by the drums in all of the album's songs.
Message In A Bottle!
Reminds me of dad
Amazing album!
A classic. Loved it from Day 1. The Sparse arrangements, the songs, the vocals, the unique drumming and the energy.
Their five albums between 1979 and 1983 were some of my favorite rock albums of all time. But, this album was the first that got me hooked. Andy Summers is one of my favorite guitarists. Such brilliant melodic ideas and great finesse.
Still as awesome as when a girlfriend gave me this a few decades ago.
Just flawless
The Police were a perfect mix of Punk and New Wave, with a Reggae beat and melodies that word leave a pop song writer considering a new career. As a sophomore effort, Regatta de Blanc is raw energy and experimentation that shows their incredible potential that blossoms in later works. Definitely a must.
I knew that The Police is very admired band and now I know the reason why! This whole album had such a cool vibe, I mean like every song has its own. The base work, the chaotic guitar in the background, the reggae sound, the masterclass of a drumer Stewart Copeland (I really like how he would easily drum on his ass in videoclips if he wanted to), everything was just so medium rared, truly a work of art. Favourite songs - Message in a bottle, On any other day, Does everyone stare, Bring on the night...
Yeah, nothing bad here. True classic.
insanely amazing. perfect drumming. every song is a banger and sounds so poppy but has such complexity underneath
Loved it. Playing with a lot of different styles. Lots of dynamic rhythms. Good production.
After The Police opened a new chapter in the then rolling New Wave with Outlandos d'Amour, I was very excited about their second album, Regatta de Blanc. I was thrilled. Unfortunately my pocket money, which I needed for beer, tobacco and gasoline, was not enough to buy this LP as well as others. But my brother had the record and I followed the band on MTV whenever possible. It was a great time and this music is part of their soundtrack. 5/5
Love it
Good music
Excellent.
Great album start to finish.
My favorite The Police album, and probably in my top 10 of best albums of all time 😊
Classic
Very nioce!
Album 810 of 1089 The Police - Reggatta De Blanc (1979) Rating : 4.5 / 5 Awesome album melding punk energy, reggae rhythms, and pop sensibility into something unmistakably their own. Won't give it perfect album status but this is getting pretty close.
Femma!
Already one of my favorite albums
Excellent
Really…A fantastic album.
The fact that Sting and Stewart Copeland never agreed on how to arrange a song, but still managed to create one of the most interesting, catchy, and tight rhythm sections in all of classic rock still amazes me. And I don't mean to discount Andy Summers here. The guitar work, along with every other aspect of this record, is top tier, and even if I don't care for each song personally, I give this one 5 stars for pure production and musicianship alone.
Time won’t take the Regatta De Blanc boy out of this Zenyatta Mondatta man.
Loved Outlandos d’Amour. Loved this one even more. When I need a Police fix, this is usually the one.
I loved every second of this. They are the sickest band ever the songwriting is so good and the production is so crisp. Love me some cops
Love the police
Police at their early, simple finest
9/10
God forbid a white guy catch a vibe
masterpiece, drums on 'message in the bottle' are enough for 5 stars
I understand why this album is one of the greatest!!
An album filled with hits. The Police are here with their sophomore effort fresh off a harsh touring schedule. Excellent musicians firing on all pistons, confident in their skills, comfortable and in sync with their mates, and yet to have the clash of personalities soon to come in their career. They are some of my favourite musicians, one of Rock's greatest Trios. Fantastic songwriting, tight as fuck, experimental mix of several genres, every song filled with an energy that you cannot ignore. Brash and bright and taut and gripping and beautiful. And the only album of theirs I don't have on vinyl, gonna have to remedy that.
One of my favorite Police records. You can really hear the growth of the band on this one.
Jesus, the police. Ich habe nix gemacht. Bin nur per zuefall da. Uf all fäll sind nöd mit blauliecht und alsrm cho aondern mit me giver album, nur eis lied kennt gha aber juhuu, ersti track holt mi scho sehr ab. Message in a bottle. Anyway bring on the night klöpft richtig ine wie e sehr stimmige indie sound. Chum i‘m hyped und freudig. Gibe ez eifach 5 handschälle.
Great album
Can't say no to the Police. Every album I've heard is a classic.
Great Guitar Play. Some real bangers on here.
Always a banger
Their sound is incredibly honed in: White dudes doing reggae-informed literary- focused new wave. The only one I didn’t really dig was the goofy ass Stewart Copeland track, “on any other day”.
You know it's a great album when you've never listened to it yet you've heard almost every single track. What a classic. I wonder if these guys had any idea what they were creating when they were writing and recording this.
Really really good. Lot of depth. I see the influence on eg green day. Super different than other stuff around the same time, eg REM Radio Free Europe. Very very good drums. Great singing!
gasp
A near perfect album. I only didn't care much for the title track which I find interesting."On any other Day" is maybe the most interesting song by The Police...
great
amazing album in all respects
Kann man immer hören
Good shit bro. Old school cool.
I think my first exposure to The Police was watching my uncle's band do a cover of Message in a Bottle. That main riff caught my ear, and I've loved the song ever since. This is a fun album and pretty critical for reggae/rock fusion. Great stuff.
One of the better albums in rock.
Overall: 9/10 I got into The Police a few years ago solely because my mom hates them lol I'm glad I got into then though cause they're now one of my favourite bands. This album has so many classic songs and it shows off just how talented every member is. Sting is a songwriting genius, Stewart Copeland is the greatest hi-hat drummer on the planet and Andy Summers is so underrated. Also, I really love On Any Other Day despite it's problematic lyrics (it was the 70s so I'll give them a pass) Fav Song: On Any Other Day Least Fav Song: Reggatta de Blanc
Hell yeah, the police slap. Stewie copes on the drums is a gawd
best
Love this album, it's my favorite Police long play.
hell yah
This is such a great album. The deceptively simple-sounding beats from Stewart Copeland are just outrageously incredible. Never have I been able to master any Police song on my kit. The beautifully subdued solos from Summers on guitar combined with the lyrics from Sting that read like the ravings of an escapee from a mental asylum. What is not to love?
One of my favorites by them
Very happy to have been generated this one. The Police were a blindspot for me; had heard of them of course but never really dove in. LOVE IT.
oh fantastic
An old favourite of mine, even if there are a couple of tracks that could have been left off (On Any Other Day). But with Walking on the Moon and Message in a Bottle - definately 5
An absolute classic
Phenomenal composition and brilliant virtuosic playing. This was one of my most favorite albums from childhood, a special project for me to find on vinyl later in life (which I did 🙂). Stewart Copland is literally a God in my eyes and Sting ain't half bad either. Because this album is rich and ripe with new wave influence and rock and punk rock flair interwoven. Every instrument is needed to get the sound they have and the production value is so very high. Regatta de Blanc is a top tier 5 star album.
This was a fun listen.
As good as the first one. Best drum sound ever.
This is such a great album. The Police were a great band and Sting is an absolutely brilliant artist. Absolutely 5/5 for me.
Tolles Album mit vielen Klassikern. Hab ich mir gerne angehört
Another classic!
TE AMO STING goooddddd
Loved it! Iconic songs I didn't quit know. Definitely a favorited album
I don’t think I can overstate how much I love this album. Stewart Copeland’s drumming alone is enough to get this album 5 stars. It’s just so unique and, at the time, there was really nothing like it in popular music. The high hats in “Walking On The Moon” are just unreal. Andy Summers’ reggae influenced guitar licks are both skillful, effortless, and beautiful. His more new wave style playing hits all the right spots in my brain. It’s never overcomplicated, but it’s always impressive. Sting himself deserves more credit for his basslines, songs like the title track are just dripping with the kind of funk you really shouldn’t get from a British white boy in the late 70’s. I already mentioned the reggae and new wave tones this record hits on, but there’s so much more than that too. It’s an early punk record as much as it is a rock n roll record. It has so much depth and so many layers that one really has to listen to it start to finish, multiple times. I could easily go through and do a song by song review of this one, pointing out every little detail that tickles the listening part of my brain, but it would truly be too long to post here. I’m really glad that I got to listen to this record today, as it seems this album has the power to make any day good. This album deserves far more stars than I’m allowed to give it.
Great stuff boys.
Excellent. Listening to this album via headphones really highlights the virtuosity of the Police. Second cousins to Rush in this regard. Quirky songs, odd rhythms, this has it all.
I may have heard other tracks from this before, but I was only familiar with Message in a Bottle. Was leaning towards 4/5, being a very solid, original sounding album. The last track, No Time This Time pushed it up to a 5/5. I will listen to this one again.
Somewhat surprised, but I do enjoy most songs by The Police.
V solid
Day284 - call it reggae, punk or rock it’s still awesome
An amazing album I personally think that Outlandos D'Amour is their best, but this a very close one. Favorite track: Message in a Bottle
Besonders hervorzuheben sind die Stücke „Message in a Bottle“ und „Walking on the Moon“. „Message in a Bottle“ zieht sofort in seinen Bann.
Classoc
Hell yesss, I'm here for any Police!
Man The Police are weird. Really weird, and I had no idea. This album is quirky and goes a bunch of different directions, and it almost all works for me. First, Message in a Bottle has been a favorite of mine since Guitar Hero 2. But the rest of this album has some real oddities, like Deathwish, the punky On Any Other Day and No Time This Time, and the funky Contact, or their other stalker anthem Does Everyone Stare. I think Synchronicity is still a little better, but this was a great album.
Classic as hell
cleaner sound, minimal mit schlagzeug, bass und gitarre - tolle songs! mir gefiel The Police schon immer, auf jedem album ein paar ausgezeichnete tracks wie Message In A Bottle , Bring On The Night oder Walking On The Moon!
Phenomenal
This has absolutely no business sounding as tight as it does. Precise, spunky musicianship and production. I've never cared much for The Police, so I'm astounded I'm having such fun with this record.
All bangers
THE GOATS!! Copeland's drumming style is so unique and he is the master of the hi-hat. Summers is a great guitar player who can steal the show or be an amazing addition to the background. Sting is a great singer who can also play the bass like nobody else. This album is their peak and perfects their punk and reggae style. If you've never listened to The Police it's a must. Timeless
Amazing
Another personal favorite. I grabbed this album years ago on the weight of 'Message in a Bottle', and 'Walking on the Moon' to discover the rest of it had the same punch and exploration of sound. I really like all of their albums, but later on I would realise how well each of the band members are represented here, who were not separated, but actually working together as songwriters. The end result is a strange mixture of melancholy and energetic quirkiness that I personally appreciate.
A truly classic and original album. Every song is good here. Liked songs added: - Message In A Bottle - It's Alright For You - Deathwish - Walking On The Moon - On Any Other Day - Contact - Does Everyone Stare
Love this. The Police in all that they are, by which I mean not merely an extension of Sting's songwriting. You can clearly hear the difference between the songs written only by Sting, those written by the group, and the ones written by Copeland. There is a reason why the hits were mostly Sting, but I still love the whole package.
Reggae infused rock And pop and punk all unite Into rock classics
My first Police album
Synchronicity was probably a better album, but you really can't go wrong with the Police.
Up until earlier today, I wasn’t really sure where I stood on The Police. Truthfully, I wasn’t really sure where a lot of people stood on these guys. They are respected by a lot of people. But considering the number of hits they had and how big they were in the 80s, other bands just seem to have more dedicated fans. I liked Synchronicity. It’s the one of the first early 80s albums I can remember enjoying and not being sickened by. And the one thing I remember taking away from that the most was just how talented all 3 men were as songwriters and musicians. The closest thing I could compare it to is Rush. Now, having the chance to go back and hear one of their earlier records, that fact has become even more apparent to me. They compliment each other’s strong suits and come together as a complete package so perfectly. Like, the way the drums in Bring On the Night feel so much more purposeful and satisfying when the lead guitar comes in blew me away. This band would absolutely not sound the same if even just one member was removed from the mix. It’s probably why Sting’s solo music was never really received in the same way. It was missing what made The Police so special. Reggatta de blanc really is everything I loved about Synchronicity, but at a seemingly much higher level of quality. I don’t want to say they progressed backwards, but I find this to be far better than their final album. I wasn’t aware of how rooted in reggae the band was when they first started. Trust me though, it’s not as obvious as it may seem. The reggae touches are much more subtle, but I love everything that they add to the music. This is probably because Sting was the one most influenced by that sound. Summers claims he wasn’t inspired by any of that, and more so just incorporated the strange chords he would play into the empty space the bass would leave. It seems that by the time they reached Synchronicity, this element of their music was largely gone, and that might explain why I like this so much more. I can officially say now that I’m a fan of The Police, but that’s solely because of how awesome this record is. Rating: 9/10
Can't believe I've been sleeping on The Police, this was fucking amazing. I need more holy shit
Terrific performances by all 3. Unique blend of reggae and rock.
Bring on the Night. Walking on the Moon. Bed's Too Big Without You. Message in a Bottle for God's sake. All the other songs are praiseworthy as well. Stewart Copeland proving once again he is the best drummer in the rock era. Andy Summers' artful renderings. Sting in top form. Great album.
I love this album. Did when I was a kid and still to this day. Himming and Hawwing b/t 4/5. Def 4.5. Walking on the move pushes it into the second act where they just let loose. I’ll give it 5
5/5 - classic
Message in a Bottle very solid, and the rest of it too. Especially the first 5 tracks.
Never listened to this album before. It’s fantastic.
A classic
I'm only slightly embarrassed to admit that I've been a big Police fan since about middle-school age, and this is one of my favorite albums, probably in part because it never seemed to get as much recognition as the later albums like "Ghost in the Machine" and "Synchronicity", although it certainly produced a couple of very popular singles. I pretty much enjoy listening to all of the songs (except maybe not quite as much "Deathwish" and "No Time this time"), and one of my favorite songs on this album is "Does Everyone Stare". I was always a bit disappointed that they moved away from the more new-wave-reggae-rock sound on this album towards a more straightforward new-wave-and-rock sound, but still enjoy their later albums too. And it wasn't until I saw the video for "Message in a Bottle" just now that I realize how much a younger Sting looks a *lot* like a youngish Ewan McGregor...
Good album, best drummer
Nostalgie, maar echt goeie nummers
Didn't realize my fave Police songs were from this album. Enjoyed this more than Synchronicity... Wow.
So many great tracks on this album, including the massive hit "Message in a Bottle", the title track "Reggatta de Blanc", plus "Bring On the Night", and my personal favourites "Walking on the Moon" and "The Bed's Too Big Without You".
Iconic album. Every single track is worth listening to. Each band member excels on his instrument. Excellent songwriting, and good production.
Great album. Still sounds fresh. Classic album.
It’s cool to hear an early album where they hone their sound.
I'm a huge Police fan and believe that all of their albums are Five-Star winners. Each member is a master of his craft and the songs are airtight. Even the "weird" tracks (usually the ones penned by Andy Summers or Stewart Copeland) have great merit and are worthy of album space. Lyrically, no one can turn a phrase like Sting. Copeland's World Music-influenced drumming style is unique and immediately distinctive. Summers came to the group as a veteran of the Art/Prog-Rock scene and elevated their sound beyond any typical Post-Punk power trio. Also...they may have been CIA plants manufactured by the government to infiltrate youth culture, if you like to believe that sort of thing.
I suppose it’s not fair to mourn the police from outlandos, when you get regatta. It’s the best. But most police albums are the best. What are you going to do?
Fun police album with some classics. Im a sucker for classics so Im rounding up from a 4.25
One of those albums I knew back to front before starting this project, easy 5 star selection. I spent hours playing along on bass guitar to this album, Sting is a pretty fine muso and it was great teaching myself how to play these songs. Copeland is just fantastic on the drums, so much going on, and Andy Sumner can be showy and also understated in the same song. It's a three piece and they have jazz chops, so there is space in the music for them all to shine. Magical. Interesting reading the reviews here - lots of people upset about appropriation of Jamaican music. The evolution of music - both modern and classical - is a story of appropriation - everything borrows from previous work, genres mutate and new music is born.
My mom's favorite band is the police. I can see why now. So many interesting sounds it was a blast to listen to and I will listen again.
6/11 songs are already saved to mixes. This is hands down my all-time favorite band, ever, ever. If you don’t like this, I feel bad for you.
Amazing, fun and chill
Album is good, Sting may be in the running for coolest dude to ever do it
Have Always Loved them…Always Will!!
Wow! This could be released today and it would fly up the charts. It is truly timeless. An awesome album that I only knew the popular songs. This was ahead of its time.
very surprised by how much I enjoyed this and how much I foresee myself revisiting
Fantastically tight, lovely percussive sounds and some great tunes!
Favorite so far
I wore this out as a kid. It still holds up. I love The Police.
This is a great album. I could see how it’s not for everyone, but it is musically solid.
All I cansay is is as poor uni student I have only a handful of genuine (non copied) tapes and the Police greatest hits would play a lot. Heavy rotation stuff and it's very hard to get sick of the police. Even thrashed through bad speakers. It may even be better when heard through bad speakers distorting off the rear windshield. 5 stars based just on track one However am I qualified to judge the rest? I haven't listened to these before. Truly. Didn't know the mastery of the Police other than their Singles. Shit this is a surprise. Detailed fast and fun. No wonder I like them. Even their lesser/ unknown stuff is amazing.
The best Police album. Raw and energetic, these boys are hungry. Immaculate variety and energy.
ABSOLUTELY PERFECTION
Love, Love, Love the Police
A favorite of many many decades. It was nice to get a reminder and prompt to listen to the whole thing from beginning to end again. My personal anecdote for the band is that after they broke up I eventually became a huge fan of Stuart Copeland and really didn't give as*** about sting. For s**** and giggles I'm going to look up the guitar players post police history to see what he ended up going on to do.
Great album! The Police were so creative and innovative! I enjoyed listening to the album when I was younger and still enjoy listening to it now.
Bought back so many good memories. I loved this!
ILL SEND A MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE!!!! i named my car after the police :).
So much sound for a three piece band. And they are tight! Stewart Copeland has serious drumming chops - he is one of the best and his crazy but precise rhythms really take this album to the next level. The album as a whole is quirky but totally fun and enjoyable.
A favorite of mine. The musicianship is tight, all the instruments stand out in the mix, the songs are good (even if not all hits), and "On Any Other Day" is just a good time.
Muy bueno
My fav Police album. Nuff said.
The Best !
Very good
Thought I'd kinda hate this because I find their hits annoying but the deeper cuts are great, dripping with grumpy old man irony, and thankfully some songs not sung by Sting and his weird asf semi-Caribbean accents
One of my fave bands!
The Police exploded onto the music scene during my freshman year of college, and dominated the airwaves over 5 albums in just under 5 years. I have all their albums on vinyl, all bought when current. They brought a different sound, new and exciting. People would stop by my dorm and ask “what is that?” When it was playing in those first couple of weeks. Of course, soon everybody knew. Looking back through the lens of 45 years, it is easy to forget just how unique this sound was at the time. The Police were one of the drivers bringing New Wave to the masses at the end of the 70’s. It is interesting that Regatta de Blanc is the first Police album to show up here. It is actually the lowest charting (US) of the 5 releases, only making it to #25. It is a really solid album, but doesn’t have as many standout songs as their other records, but doesn’t have any real low points. It is probably my 2nd favorite of the 5 releases, only a hair below the debut. They really lean into the “White Reggae” thing here, as evidenced by the album title, but still includes a couple of straight rockers, “It’s alright for you” and “no time this time” which are both excellent. It’s a great album that has stood the test of time. Hugely successful, influential…. 5/5
Amo a Sting y a The Police. Maravilla de álbum.
A classic.
Raw, energetic young band. Great album with good range of song styles
Evergreen & lifelong companion
Cool. Cool. Cool, cool, cool.
As great an album as when I first heard it in 1979.
I was frustrated as a student in the 80s when I couldn't afford to buy all the Police albums that preceded Synchronicity. The best I could do was get the greatest hits collection when it came out. So this was a delayed pleasure to go back and listen to this album today. It is one of my least known albums of the Police, but I have really loved listening it today, with my appreciation growing with each listen to songs I wasn't familiar with.
I don’t believe that I ever listened to this album, but I did recognize a couple of tracks beyond the singles. I enjoy the sound of The Police, so it was easy to enjoy this album.
I've never listened to this one but it sure sounds like The Police. Very fun.
I was thinking about how this album screams junior high to me… but then thinking about it more started thinking that all of The Police’s oeuvre seem anchored to that period of my life. I guess that makes sense, because the entirety of The Police’s output was from 1978-1983. This major change to the musical scene served as part of the soundtrack to the major life changes I was experiencing. Then I knew The Police’s hits, but didn’t own any of their albums until the end of their career - Synchronicity - released as it was when I finally started having my own budget to buy music. I wonder if I had had access to unlimited streaming if I would have listened to the rest of this exceptional album? Or would I just be focused of the couple of hits that forced themselves into my consciousness? Oh yeah… what about the album? Reggatta de Blanc is a fantastic album. The Police are firing on all cylinders here, and I am glad to finally hear this. Truly deserving of its place on this list!
Creative and calming
Police is cool!
always jotful
Besser als das erste Album. Variantenreicher und ein größeres musikalisches Spektrum.
Good
I really enjoyed it on my first listen, and on my second listen, I found my appreciation for the album growing. The interplay between the drums, bass, guitar, and vocals is so esoteric and interesting throughout—there’s a counterpoint to everything that I think is actually fairly rare to hear in pop music like this. While I do find Sting’s “Jamaican accent” a tad cringey, he is a charismatic vocalist who complements the music perfectly. Of course, a lot attention is (deservedly) given to Sting—whose melodic basslines are often the highlight of a song, as in “Walking on the Moon”—but this doesn’t give enough credit to Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, who are incredible musicians just as crucial to the success and sound of The Police. In fact, Copeland’s drums are the star of this album. So erratic yet controlled, the fills are perfectly placed, and his tom work is so tight and exciting. I was expecting myself to like this album, but I wasn’t anticipating giving it a 5/5 rating! This will definitely be revisited many times over.
One of my favorite albums from high school, still as good as I thought back then
After Outlandos d'Amour, which included the breakout hit Roxanne, The Police, it was going to be hard for a follow-up album to gain respect. Reggatta de Blanc has always struggled for the respect it deserves. More polished than its predecessor, with significantly better production, Reggatta is packed with impressive songs including the amazing leadoff Message In a Bottle, It's Alright for You, the atmospheric Walking on the Moon and Bring on the Night, Bed's Too Big Without You, and the title track. While the next album, Zenyatta Mondatta, is even better and was more popular, Reggatta de Blanc is an incredible display of song craft and musicianship, while capturing the New Wave zeitgeist of pivotal late 1970s.
Another absolute classic

POLICIAAA
This is a great album with several excellent songs. It's three lads playing well together and is the last album done before Sting's ego became the fourth Cop.
I prefer this Police album to others because the hit(s) are epic and less commercial than their future hits – they made pop radio come to them vs the other way around. The arrangements are exquisite and “all noises are created by the Police”, as the credits state. Each member is an outstanding musician with a very distinctive sound – if you compare the guitar and drums on the reggae-flavoured songs to those on the more banal UB40 LP we just heard, they’re in a different league. The album feels a bit schizophrenic with Sting’s reggae bumping up against Copeland’s punk-inspired tracks, and there’s more than one throw-away tune, but I’m impressed enough by the unique sound that this trio puts out it’s still a 5 in my books.
About perfect. So little of post-punk and new wave really moves the dial for me, but the Police really brought something new into pop.
Not a bad song on here. I had only been familiar with their singles but I liked pretty much every song. I had never realized that the Police had a reggae sound, but it's pretty obvious once it's pointed out
My favorite power trio. My favorite Police album (ok, maybe equally with Synchronicity). With that out of the way, it was refreshing as I hadn't listened to the full album in at least 10 years, probably before Spotify. I was reminded why this was in such regular listening rotation when I fully appreciated it in my college years, a good 12 years after it came out. I barely was able to appreciate the hits when it first came out. They had the essence of the time's punk energy while instilling a great mix of reggae syncopation and melodic complexity, but also having a super tight sound. Sting's lyrics, Stewart's brilliant drumming, and Andy's (truly underappreciated) stellar playing - watch anything he's done live--they just had a magic mix. Message in a Bottle is such an all around good, rocking song with smart lyrics. Walking On the Moon is a great exploration of minimalism and space (I did tire of it easily in the early days of listening to it and tended to skip over it frequently, but it was wonderful hearing it in the full album context again). To me, It's Alright for You and Deathwish are just evergreen rocking tunes. Bring on the Night and Bed's Too Big Without You are probably my true favorite songs on the album. Regatta De Blanc is just a fun rocker that you sing along with the scatting. And then there are the more quirky more "filler" songs: Does everyone Stare, Any Other Day, Contact. I still love them. Fight me. Rounding out the album is the frenzy called No Time This Time, one of my most favorite lyrics: If I could I'd stop the whole world down I'd bring it to it's knees I'd stop it spinning it round But as it is I'm climbing an endless wall Just brilliant.
The Police liefert einfach immer! - zwischen '78 und '83 haben Sting, Stewart Copeland und Andy Summers konstant jedes Jahr ein großartiges Album nach dem Nächsten rausgehauen (so auch hier) - enthält zwei der besten Songs aller Zeiten (Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon) - macht aber auch sonst einfach Spaß! - kreativ und abwechslungsreich (teils atmosphärisch, teils schneller und treibender) - Krank guter Sound Rating: 4,75/5
- Stewart fucking Copeland!!!!!!
Innovative for its time, this album is awesome. Does every track hit it out of the park? No. Are those tracks better than half the albums on this 1001 list? Yes. This album has aged well, but should be judged on the merits of when it was released.
Recognised more of this than I expected - good one Police
DOUBLE TROUBLE BABYYYYYY this is yet another banger Play Walking on the Moon for my funeral pls 5*, perfection
Very cool sound especially for the time. Elements of reggae, pop, rock. Very cool harmonies. Big sound for a trio. Unique tracks and nice preamble to the 80s. Vox were exceptional. 4.5/5
Message in a bottle and Walking on the moon? Sublime - it ought to be a solid 5 star album, but then it also has some fillers (though on third play, I'm getting to like them too). I was a big Police fan and they produced alot of brilliant stuff, but suffered fron inconsistency. This really good and growing on me.
Bought this album aged 11 years soon after its release. I still have the album in my loft somewhere and love it as much today, 44 years later, as the day I bought it and first listened to it.
Another lp I bought for $1 at a swap meet back in the late 80's. There is some classic stuff on here for sure. I think The Police are one of the biggest 'what could've been' bands. I remember hearing they broke up on the radio. I never liked any Sting music half as much as I liked his Police stuff.
Some may say, that something is wrong with me! Ok.
KAMI OF, OF THE CRESCENT MOON
Classic, this album cannot go under 5/5
Top five favorite of mine already!!
Best album ever!
p428. 1979. 4.5 stars Quality Brit New Wave. Definitive proof that Sting can knock out a tune with the best of them, and that Stewart Copeland was a surprisingly decent songwriter. Half a point deducted for Sting's annoying cod-Caribbean vocals.
Banger
Iconic gibt nit mehr zu sagen
I Should've listened to them earlier fuck. Great fucking drums and grooves, great bass lines and tone. Overall great album, can't think I was missing out.
My second favourite Police album.
Any Police album could be here. They are all good. This one has always been one of my favorites.
Amazing music.
Used to put this CD on in my basement as a 5-8 year old while hitting balls off the tee :,)
