Reviews (page 3 of 12)
Bought this album aged 11 years soon after its release. I still have the album in my loft somewhere and love it as much today, 44 years later, as the day I bought it and first listened to it.
Another lp I bought for $1 at a swap meet back in the late 80's. There is some classic stuff on here for sure. I think The Police are one of the biggest 'what could've been' bands. I remember hearing they broke up on the radio. I never liked any Sting music half as much as I liked his Police stuff.
Some may say, that something is wrong with me! Ok.
KAMI OF, OF THE CRESCENT MOON
Classic, this album cannot go under 5/5
Top five favorite of mine already!!
Best album ever!
p428. 1979. 4.5 stars Quality Brit New Wave. Definitive proof that Sting can knock out a tune with the best of them, and that Stewart Copeland was a surprisingly decent songwriter. Half a point deducted for Sting's annoying cod-Caribbean vocals.
Banger
Iconic gibt nit mehr zu sagen
I Should've listened to them earlier fuck. Great fucking drums and grooves, great bass lines and tone. Overall great album, can't think I was missing out.
My second favourite Police album.
Any Police album could be here. They are all good. This one has always been one of my favorites.
Amazing music.
Used to put this CD on in my basement as a 5-8 year old while hitting balls off the tee :,)
police, tout comme Sting Solo, est intemporel. Pas beaucoup d'artistes de ces années pourraient sortir un albums aujourd'hui et quand même être un mega hits. je pense que police est une exception à cela. 5+
A modern pop classic. 7 stars.
Honestly a great album top to bottom, didn't expect to jive with all of the non-hits this way
God
awesome
I was 10 years old when Synchronicity came out. I was enthralled and The Police were my first favorite band. Once I got a Walkman for a gift, I acquired the entire Police catalogue ASAP. Regatta De Blanc was never among my favorite, but when I'm in a certain mood, it's perfect. The litmus test is the first song Message in a Bottle. Play the album, if it sounds like same old classic rock radio, put on something else. If. this song makes you queazy with it's awesomeness then proceed. If Message In A Bottle with Stewart's impeccably tight and characteristic drumming, Sting's mesmerizing bass and vocals, and Andy's sensuous guitar accents doesn't move you... Move on, cause that's all you're gonna get here.
Song for song, this is probably my favorite Police album. I love their crisp yet atmospheric sound, with nice separation of the instruments. That's the beauty of a trio I guess. Their songs have these amazing internal dynamics, both in in terms of their structures, and the interplay of the parts. I especially enjoy the drumming and percussion of Stewart Copeland, but I also love Sting's melodic basslines, and the way Andy Summers is able to use his guitar to support everything with such subtle texture without overdoing anything. There are some fun rockers here, but I think it's the more subdued tracks that I gravitate towards, especially "Walking On The Moon."
My favourite Police album by far. As far as I'm concerned, this reggae of the white album is one of those rare beasts where each track is a masterpiece in its own right. Message in a Bottle is album's most famous track, yes, but the album is full of unique moments. Whether it's that unique sound of Walking on the Moon or The Bed's Too Big Without You, or that opera singer I can hear in the background in Does Everyone Stare, this album is the result of the hard work of three very competent musicians striving very hard to avoid their era's common "rock" sound. They were highly successful in this endeavour of theirs. P.S. I used to love the album's back cover, featuring the back of the trio's heads (basically, the opposite of the front cover's photo). We don't get to experience these things in this age of streaming.
Really liked it. Great musicians. And you gotta love Sting
Classic! Really great album. Rock is fun
the blend of reggae and 80’s rock is awesome. definitely coming back to this one
Love the reggae rock vibes
Good album! Obviously we got the hits but there's loads of stuff I've never heard, and there's some interesting tracks there too! Saved songs: Does Everyone Stare, Bring On The Night, The Bed's Too Big Without You
Love this album. No sophomore slump here. Kickass opening track that sucks you in as you sing along. Bring on the Night, Bed’s too Big, It’s alright for you are also standouts. Great blend of reggae vibes and excellent rock and roll.
What an excellent group of musicians and strong group of songs, including a few I’ve never heard before. Two absolute bangers: Message In a Bottle, Walking on the Moon. The only “bad” song is “On Any Other Day” with the poorly aged line about his son being gay. Observation: The beginning of “Bring on the Night” sounds like “edge of seventeen”.
Such a good album front to back
This band has no bad albums
Lovely punky pop reggae. Of course covering topics like depression, isolation, prostitution, suicide. I don’t think we’ll ever get a band like The Police ever again.
Coincidentally, about two hours before this album showed up, I just finished listening to Ghost in the Machine. Five stars on that one, btw. If you've ever heard a Police song before, they're instantly recognizable for the rest of your life, and they manage to stay fresh; never boring. For me, these guys are about as perfect a band as it gets. Stewart Copeland is a wizard, Sting is a great bassist and lyricist, and there is some other guy with a guitar fills the space between between those two giants with ease I thought I'd be rating this five stars before I even listened this morning, but there were a couple weaker tracks that brought it down to a bit below 4.5. Still great to have listened this morning, and this album already is and will certainly stay in my library ⭐⭐⭐⭐.49
Good album but The Police have better.
I heard Sting live when I was still a kid, without really knowing much about him at the time. I think this album is super, super cool - you can really feel how great they must have been back then. 7/10
är the police framgång copelands high-hats förtjänst.
Bra!
Musically, unbelievable. Focusing on each instrument separately while listening to this band is so rewarding. The songs may not always mesh perfectly, but the pieces are so strong that it results in plenty of awesome moments. It's Alright for You and Walking on the Moon are the highlights for me.
One of the (many) bands where, for me, the hits don't really show their true quality. On this release Message In A Bottle is not the standout track, although being one of The Police biggest hits. Tracks like Bring On The Night, Deathwish (and after that Walking On The Moon) shows how great this musicians can be. 4/5
Cuantos albumes existen q tengan 2 hitazos como este?
Can't go wrong with some Police (band). 4.5 bumped down to 4.
Sickk definitely will listen again
Fabulous album. A must listen.
Classic and great. More reggae influences than I would have expected, which was fun!
Didn't expect to enjoy, enjoyed! Hooray!
Stuart Copeland is amazing, he's always pushing, ahead of the beat. I hadn't really listened before but he is legit. Enjoy far more than I thought I would, just listen for the drums.
The Police were never a great albums band. The singles are superb however and the band just gel so tightly. Should be 3 stars but Message In A Bottle is one of the greatest singles ever so an extra star given
Classic album, steward Copeland's drumming is the highlight, super innovative and tasteful. Walking on the moon, that guitar tone and drumming is iconic!
Pretty solid. Surprised of all the reggae and ska influences.
(Light 7/10) A band of white dudes named after an oppressive force of systemic racism and class control, made a career of combining Reggae and Pop Rock together... lmao So once we get past the irony of that, this album is okay! lol. I prefer Outlandos D'Amour to this one truth be told, this record has a couple very standout songs. "Message in a bottle" for one is of course an incredible track. That guitar chord progression is iconic, the subtle bluesy guitar embellishments, the loud verses and quiet choruses, and of course Copeland's incredible drumming skills on full display. This track is pop perfection. I wouldn't even be upset if this was the only song by The Police you ever listened to, it's that good. The other great track on this record is the song "walking on the moon". An atmospheric and nocturnal song with a light and airy feel to it, thanks to the effects heavy guitar chords and Sting's smooth bass line. Copeland's drums are absolutely brilliant on this track, especially his expert use of staccato cymbal runs during the bridge add a ton to the song's overall effect. It's a great albeit low-key number. This album though is pretty inconsistent in quality tuneage for me though. The title track is a mostly-instrumental jam with some interesting stuff going on, but it lacks a kind of substance. "It's alright for you", "Bring on the night" and "Deathwish" are all fine as well, but don't really rise to the same level as "Message on a bottle" for me. Side B is also a bit lacking, aside from "Walking on the moon" the songs don't feel like they were taken very seriously and suffer as a result. I found myself utterly detached from "The Bed's Too Big" and "On any other day" was just really bonkers to a point where it felt like it shouldn't have been included in the track list. "Does Everyone Stare" felt like it was missing something, and even though instrumentally I really like what was happening with "No Time This Time", Sting's singing sort of ruins it for me a little. I think what this album does very well is provide interesting backdrops to otherwise inane musical ideas. Copeland and Summers alone are fantastic musicians that add a lot of flair and flavor to these songs. Stewart's inventive use of rhythm and Summers' fantastic guitar tone and phrasing are well worth paying attention to, but I think this record could've done better with stronger songs at the core. Sting has never really been my favorite Frontman in any rock band, I find his voice to be an acquired taste I do find it distractingly formulaic how every song repeats the final hook over and over ad nauseam. It's cute for a few songs but you realize this is The Police's writing formula when it comes to hooks. So yeah idk, I know I sound very negative about a lot of the aspects of this record, but I think it's just that I felt like as a follow-up to a great debut, this could have been a lot better than the final result. The Reggae crossover is also kind of weird for me, just knowing that this musical trend has a lot of colonialism and appropriation behind it, I can't help but feel that the historical context of that does mar my overall appreciation for this as well. Still, despite my reservations it's a pretty decent listen. The two singles are the best of the bunch, but aside from a couple songs on the second side nothing here is actually bad or unlistenable even. Worth checking out or spinning a few times. Synchronicity blows this out of the water though, just sayin'.
I was already familiar with Regatta de Blanc. I've listened to all of The Police's albums before, with Synchronicity always being "my" Police album. What made this experience different was listening with complete intention. "Message in a Bottle" has long been my favorite Police song, so the album already had a head start. Beyond that, I came away with a much deeper appreciation for how naturally The Police blended punk, new wave, reggae, and rock into a sound that was unmistakably their own. The reggae influence ebbs and flows throughout the album without ever taking over. It's an ingredient, not the whole recipe. I also appreciated how cohesive the band sounded at this stage of their career. Every member contributes something essential, and it was fun hearing Stewart Copeland step out from behind the drums to sing lead on a couple of tracks. The chemistry between the three musicians was undeniable. I found myself enjoying several deep cuts just as much as the singles, especially "Deathwish," "It's Alright for You," "On Any Other Day," and "No Time This Time." There were a couple of songs that didn't stand out as much, but they didn't take away from the overall experience. This project is already teaching me that there's a big difference between hearing an album and truly listening to one. I'd played Regatta de Blanc before. This was the first time I really listened.
The more I listen to The Police, the more confused I get about how they got so popular. Like, this music gets kinda weird; it's great but at times leans a little too much into the reggae sound
Decent - the 3 hits are really good and I thought the rest was very listenable - enough to get a 4 for me
Enjoyed this one!
Tämä on löytynyt omasta hyllystä jo vuodesta -88 saakka. Hyvä levy, hyviä biisejä, vaikka tämä ei mielestäni oli edes bändin paras levy.
Nostalgie en veel hits
I liked Sting’s basslines back then; they were pretty cool. The music itself wasn't exactly the style I primarily listened to, of course, but "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon" were played constantly at the time—you simply couldn't avoid them. In fact, I listened to the album in its entirety today. The sound has a bit of a reggae-meets-New Wave vibe. I hadn't really noticed that before, as I only knew the hit singles—the ones that got played in every club. There are a few instrumental passages that sound very experimental. That is precisely why I came to love Sting's albums later on, as well as his commitment to humanitarian and political causes. He began advocating for human rights early on, supported Amnesty International, and was eventually part of the "Human Rights Now!" tour. All in all, it’s a good album with hints of jazz; when you view it within the timeline of his career—it is the second Police album—it becomes clear how and why Sting evolved into such a deeply humane musician.
The other of the two Police albums on this list. Synchronicity is more pop and this record sounds a bit more like their trying to figure out what they are doing. There are a few well played hits on the album, but I was more interested in hearing the other stuff. It’s quite good most of it. They show their instrumentship a little more than necessary, though it is enjoyable all through the record. Favourites: Bring On The Night, Walking On The Moon
Strange and tight songs that draw you in without an understanding. Catchy with a mysterious twist
Found myself enjoying a good majority of the songs. Not a big reggae fan, though, so that took away from it a bit. Feel like there were parts in each song that I really enjoyed and pieces that brought each one down just a little for me. Whatcha gonna do. Rating: 7.6 Faves: Reggatta De Blanc, Contact
Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Great - Message In A Bottle sums up everything The Police were about. Wonderful songwriting with an urgency akin to punk and yet a groove and sleek sheen that made it incredibly accessible. Walking On The Moon, The Bed's Too Big Without You and the title track are other highlights on an album full of highlights.
The policee amor Tiene canciones tipo reggae?
Good
I was surprised at how much I liked the first part half, but it really lost me in the second half of the album
everything that helped me get through packing my entire apartment is getting minimum 4 stars from me
The only Police I like. Sad that Sting lost the sauce.
odkrywcze za sprawą groovów Copelanda, topka Policjantów
reggae jazz rock with some mix ups thrown in there + a classic GOATed opening track.
Can’t believe the guy who made the end credits song for Emperor’s New Groove had a whole ass band making music and the like. This music has a real Sting to it.
Great album, high energy start to finish, plus two greatest hits in their original context.
I’m putting this into temporary rotation. I’ve had it for decades but I don’t think I’ve paid it enough attention. I want to further absorb the great stuff outside of the huge singles which open each side the album. “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon” are of course sublime, but unlike a few albums I’ve had generated lately, they don’t leave the rest of the material in their shadows. The band don’t to seem have been too precious about recording it, returning to the same studio and producer of their first album and bashed it out even though they were short of material. The devil-may-care attitude is far from apparent because the album sounds amazing. Not only am I going to spend some more quality time with this album, I think I need a Police marathon in case there is more gold I’ve forgotten about.
Love the police. But didn't care too much for this album.
Two big hits with other strong songs. Surprised me how good some of it was.
Love the police and love sting. Amazing album!
White reggae is more fun than it has any right to be
Pretty good, although the fake Jamaican accent is distracting in a few songs. And there's only one really great song (Message in a bottle)
The Police are great....Stuart Copeland is a tomekeeper.
Dunno if this is what I would call reggae, exactly, but it's good. 4/5
My previous experience here with The Police was of confusion and disappointment that Every Breath You Take turned out to be almost the only redeeming feature of Synchronicity. So I was concerned when this kicked off with Message In A Bottle, which was a personal favourite from a very young age. Thankfully Reggatta De Blanc was a much more coherent and accessible listen to me. The bass is the star once again, along with Sting's performances. It also has a darkness and swagger that pull you along with it and I enjoyed it enough to listen through a few times this week.
8 - GOOD
I once said that The Police were overrated. I take that back. A joyous album.
The Police's interpretation of white reggae never achieved the critical accalim of The Clash. Perhaps that's because the latter was better at it, or that Joe Strummer was deemed more cool than Sting. I liked both interpretations. This is a great collection of pop songs and probably The Police at their peak.
I only knew the singles but I quite liked this. Might try their other albums on the strength of this.
Didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did - it almost got a 5 but not quite
Solide, classique et toujours reconnaissable ! La Police quoi!
The singles are so strong the rest of the album could be amplified fart sounds and it would still be a stone cold classic. And to be clear, some of them are.
Pretty good album, but yeah it is white guys experimenting with reggae. Sometimes the blend worked perfectly such as Message In A Bottle, but other times it could be kinda cringe. Favorite Track - Message In A Bottle Least Favorite Track - Walking On The Moon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Klassinen ROCKS. Hämärä sekotus reggaeta ja rokkia, mutta jollain tavalla toimii. Hittibiisit alussa ja lopussa niin jää hyvä viba
I like Sting but I'm not extensively familiar with his work solo or with The Police. I had only heard message in a bottle before. It's obvious why this was popular and the band had some staying power, however after some of these other albums I can't give this a 5
The Police are a band that have realyl grown on me over the years. I think this is actually their weakest album--they only had five!--but this is still soldi listening, showing their penchant for fun pop beats and chiller material. Top tracks: "Message in a Bottle," "Walking on the Moon," "Bring On the Night"
--Message in a Bottle...classic groove --Reggatta de Blanc...instrumental that builds nicely --It's Alright for You...fun but generic rocker --Bring On the Night...Summers is providing great texture here --Deathwish...very tight band. they lock it in. not really sure what that means but they're doing it --Walking on the Moon...love that guitar tone --On Any Other Day...dafuq is this? --The Bed's Too Big Without You...Sting's bass shines here --Contact...funky and weird. my kind of weird --Does Everyone Stare...it's certainly different. not in a particularly entertaining way --No Time This Time...some speed punk! not sure Sting's voice is right for this type of song
A solid sophomore effort. 3 great songs and some nice musical numbers.
Reggatta de Blanc translates literally as "white reggae," which is either an act of disarming self-awareness or considerable audacity depending on your generosity toward three very talented British musicians appropriating a Jamaican genre and making it their own. The honest answer is probably both, and the record is good enough that the argument becomes academic fairly quickly. The singles are the reason this earns its four. "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon" are two of the strongest things the Police ever made — propulsive, melodically generous, built on Copeland's genuinely inventive drumming in a way that gives both tracks more rhythmic interest than their radio ubiquity might suggest. "Beds Too Big Without You" is the hidden gem, warmer and more vulnerable than the band's usual cool precision, the kind of track that elevates a record by showing a different register entirely. The honest limitation is that the material between those peaks is middling in a way that a stronger record wouldn't tolerate. The filler is competent without being compelling, and there's enough of it to keep this from the conversation that Synchronicity earned on the strength of its more consistent songwriting. What tips it to four rather than three is a specific quality that's hard to quantify and easy to feel — a kitsch charm particular to the Police's reggae-punk hybrid that operates somewhere between nostalgia and genuine affection. The record is fun in a way that the respect-don't-love threes simply aren't, and fun earns its place in the rating when it's this consistent at its peaks.
🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 (rounded up because I can see several of these songs growing on me) Obviously I'd heard Message in a Bottle, but was surprised at how consistent the rest of the album was. Really uptempo, really distinct voice, really enthusiastic and complex instrumentation. There were some reggae parts I was like, huh, I don't know if I can get into this, but Emily so kindly pointed out the title is "White Reggae" and then that cleared it up. Will definitely relisten—if this is this good, I'm so excited to see what Synchronicity's got. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing
Interesting early work. The non-Sting vocals were weak as was some of the song writing. The good songs were great. Fun to contrast this with Sting’s later solo efforts.
Some rock, some reggae, and some songs that combine elements from both. As you guys probably know, I love music that blends or "fuses" styles together. Also, like I've said before, it's nice to be able to contextualize some of these really famous songs that everyone knows, like Rock Lobster. I could not have told you it was by the police. I'm finding that I like them quite a bit. There are some weaker tracks, but some very catchy ones as well. Feeling a light 4
This one, for me, is VERY close between a 4 and a 5. (Technical question: would we agree that everything between 3.50 and 4.49 is a 4, and everything 4.5 to 5 is a 5? Or, on a 100 scale, 5 = 90 to 100, 4 = 70 to 89, 3 = 50 to 69, 2 = 30 to 49 . . . but then 1 is everything from 0 to 29? I guess an alternative -- somewhat neater, but maybe problematic - is 1 = 0 to 20, and 5 = 81 to 100; or 1 = 1 to 19, and adjust accordingly. I say problematic, because I don't think of an 81 - for example - as a '5'.) ANYWAY . . . the Police were very big when I was in college (late 80 to early 83), and a bit before and after, too, and/but were one of the few really popular acts of the time that I liked quite a lot, *despite* hearing them on the radio a lot. And I think their music has held up pretty well. All 3 musicians are topnotch, as are most of the songs (though there are, IMO, a few lesser songs -- maybe 3 out of 11, say tracks 5, 9, and 11 -- most of the songs are very good to excellent), and the album as a whole. The Police took elements of reggae and combined those with new wave/pop/rock, and made something new, and distinctive, and I think it worked, and still holds up. So, 4 or 5? If 5 is 81 to 100, it's clearly a 5, for me; if 5 is 90 to 100, it's a closer call. I think I'll give it a VERY high 4, thinking of 5 as a 90 to 100.
I don't agree with using that "r" word to describe this album. They're just another rock band. At times closer to the Beach Boys than Bombaclaat. That said, it's a very solid album with songs in a variety of styles. They're good at structuring songs and there are plenty of good ideas. I think "Walking On the Moon" is my favorite. Maybe just because I knew it before, but not too well like "Message." I like the Dub influence. I like "The Bed's Too Big" for the same reason Really nice drumming, especially the hi-hat work
i liked it but i prefer zenyatta mondatta. it felt slower and not as catchy but some of my faves were contact and does everyone stare. i enjoyed the slow surf vibes of this one
I like the reggae new wave punk fusion they created. All very good musicians and for a 3-piece they rock. Great songwriting to go along with the killer drums and bass. I can dig it
I found this far more accessible than Synchronicity. The album has a great vibe and the individuals in the band are more than the sum of their parts. Really enjoyable album
不是很兴的new wave
Pop pop easy easy groovy tho
I have liked The Police and also Sting since I was a child. I am not sure what it is about Gordon Sumner that I like. He is a strange vocalist. The only person to have both a Geordie and Jamaican accent at the same time. But somehow that works. This album has two very big hits "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon". I feel like both of these are underplayed and I am quite happy to listen to them again as part of this album. "Bring on the Night" has a touch of "Edge of Seventeen" in the intro. But like a lot of these tracks it moves into a latin or Portuguese guitar melody. I enjoyed this album and would listen to it again. (3.500)
Initial post listing ranking: 7/10 Type of music / Reminds me of: More Four String typea music, kinda like raygay pretty often, Thoughts: DEF GOOD, I LIKE DA POLICE (caps lock was on lol). I do think this would be higher but there are some shitters in there. Definitly a solid 7 bam right on it. Closer to a 4 stars Favorite Track: Walking On The Moon I hope MAAA leg wont break
Now I’m going to be singing Message in a Bottle to myself for the rest of the day.
good album
This is my first time listening to a full Police album. I’m taken with Stewart Copeland’s drumming. Wow! The band’s rhythms and syncopations are so dynamic and intricate (to my not-musically-trained ear). They really light up my brain in a new, exciting way. The vocals are nice and the songwriting is good, but I am so bowled over by the sonic landscape that I feel like I could enjoy the album fully instrumental. I could give this album a 5 rating for the drumming alone. I’m on a quest for more Copeland now!
Holy peak
What a stupid name. White Reggae. I looked at it, I thought "so I'll be listening to a bunch of reggae made by white people? No thanks. Well at least it has Message In A Bottle on it." And I was partially right. It is reggae made by white people. But when they pick up the pace and keep the energy high, this is fantastic! Even after the Big Hit Single ends, I keep nodding my head, I really fall for the album. I'm not a fan of the times when they slow down and are just straight-up copying reggae, with the Jamaican patois and all that bullshit. I wish Sting would just use his own voice. But It's Alright for You, On Any Other Day, No Time This Time...these are all kick-ass songs. Drumming is absolutely perfect, too.
Message in a bottle - 5/5 Reggatta de blanc - 4/5 Its alright for you - 4/5 Bring on the night - 3/5 Deathwish - 4/5 Walking on the moon - 4/5 On any other day - 3/5 The bed's too big without you - 4/5 Contact - 4/5 Does everyone stare - 2/5 No time this time - 4/5
Another band I only knew from their singles. Didn’t realize they are borderline proto-punk/ska
I felt that from the inside. His voice feels like something fluttering inside my chest. A happiness with a backdrop of melancholy.
Y’all mind if a white boy sing a little patois? Seriously what the fuck was Sting on Great album though.
Some really great songs, some so so ones
always enjoy the Police. The early ones are definitely the best. 4 stars
i’m not mad at this generator for once
Definitely have to re-listen but this album started off with a banger with Message in a Bottle. Each musical decision made scratched my brain just the right way.
Classic with lots of their banger songs. Message in a bottle, etc. I liked it more than I thought I would.
Leuk. Frisse ska punk met meer invloeden. Ze zijn echt goed op elkaar ingespeeld. Groove is goed, catchy hooks en wat solootjes. Heel strak allemaal. Paar bangers en geen stinkerds. De tweede helft is wel iets minder
Starts off pretty strong, even the first few songs after message in a bottle, but it doesn’t really go anywhere and all ends up sounding pretty samey 3.5
Fantastic record with the trio blazing through some scorching tracks! Great stuff here.
Quite liked this one, sting can come too much into the focus sometimes but apart from that good. I feel like people would hate on any other day but I find it charming. Specific rating - 4.1 Fav song - message in a bottle Least fav- contact
This went triple platinum in my childhood home.
Another where I enjoy the album but wouldn’t want to listen to it on the regular.
Like every album ny the police, there is like 3 great song, 6 good song and the rest is ok-meh. They had a really cool mix of reguea and new wave. "Message in a bottle" is probably their best song. A timeless classic. Its prety good, especially for a pop album.
Tons of fun. Lots of genres represented here.
16/05/2026 It's nice to hear a band of this era with a different sort of twang to their music. Spotify listeners: 39.6 million
Possibly their best, it's between this and their debut for me
Message in a Bottle
Such a great album! These guys have always rocked
Nice
I've only listened to the hits on this album, so listening to it in full was new for me. I really enjoyed it and I understand why it is so famous. Though The Police falls into the genre of classic rock, I felt that they had a very original sound and added value to the genre as a whole. Would absolutely listen again!
This was really good actually
A couple of filler tracks keep it from a 5
Deep tracks hurt the police, but they are a great band. Low 4. 3.7/5
This is really good. Not a bad song here. But despite the two big singles and album cuts like Bring on the Night, my police album of choice is still their debut.
Listened in the car and in Canadian Tire lol. Man does this one start strong with Message in a Bottle. While there were a couple stinkers anything with Stewart Copeland in it can't be that bad, he just elevates every track with his virtuosic drumming. Too many middling tracks for me to give it a full five but enjoyed it a lot.
its cool
Some decent songs in there. I like the genre so that certainly bumps things up.
this is funky and I like it. Synthesized reggae. I know there is a time and place for it. not sure if it's on a boat or maybe just at a strange little bar?
I really admire the musicians in this band. Copeland and Summers are of course superior players. As it happens Sting’s bass playing fits perfect between these two. I also enjoy the relatively low gain approach. Summers stands out from the other guitar players from this era as a result. Message in a bottle and Walking on the moon are two favourite tracks. The rest of the album is good, but nothing else stands out.
I was only really familiar with message in a bottle before this- this is a solid album! It is also funny to see Sting with this much hair on the album cover.
My parents were big fans of this album so this had a pleasant nostalgia to it :^)
Surprised it took this long for the Police to show up for me... They had a pretty tight and distinct discography now that I think about it. I wouldn't exactly say that they "broke out" here, given the hit singles featured in their debut album a year prior, but the group refined their reggae rock sound that they're known for here. Always impressive, given that they operated with a three-man kit during their entire heyday. It's energetic, snappy, and a little quirky. Copeland's technical and precise drumming stood out to me on a number of tracks (did you know he composed the music for the old Spyro video games?). Summers on guitar and Sting as the lead man and also his contributions on bass are noteworthy too of course. The Police would lean into more of the new wave & pop side of things as they released more albums, but it's fun looking back at the beginning as they helped usher in reggae rock to the masses. I don't know if this is their best album (side one overshadows side two here), but it's certainly a good introduction to the Police for those who weren't previously familiar.
banger album reggae rock lezgooooo
Rätt trevlig. Bra trummor
The Police are (almost) always a fun listen. This is one of their best. 8/10.
4, because I love the Police. Can't help it.
The musical band "The Police," more like the band "The Great."
Surprised myself how much I liked this. Really inventive and varied
Not the best police album, but a good listen.
Enjoyed this. It’s the first time The Police have really clicked with me. Walking On The Moon specifically is a very good track, love the reggae feel to it.
If I could dock half a mark down to 3.5 I would. I can’t believe no one slapped Sting at any point and forcibly reminded him to stop doing that thing with his voice. You aren’t Jamaican Sting
The Police (Zenyatta Mondatta) was the first album I ever bought and so I have fond memories of their stuff from this era. Message In A Bottle is the standout track but there is plenty of interest and variety in the rest of the album to hold the interest.
Solid album outside the opening banger tune that everyone knows; still opposed to tantric sex.
Bello, mi ha ricordato la me da bambina e quanto mi piaceva la canzone roxanne.
Reggatta de Blanc confirms The Police's search and evolution, while preserving their clear punk roots. It's a masterclass from each member of the band, as well as representing a subtle way of reclaiming the reggae genre, performed outstandingly by "whites" (the album's title). Although Walking on the Moon and Message in a Bottle reached number one on the top-charts, I'm sticking with Bring on the Night (Cerati bias) for my Spotify playlist (Ceratiempo K-list).
I think the bangers outweigh the less strong tracks
each musician is great in their own right. especially Copeland. i really likes the instrumental part of the album, like Walking on the Moon. it goes on a little too long, though. listened to at school. my discman died during song 10 :(
The Police nunca falla diría mi papá, en este álbum la más conocida me gusta que es message in a bottle pero la mejor es bring on the night con mención en la batería en reggatta de blanc que no tiene sentido.
What the shit is with that homophobic song? Are they implying it sucks when your son turns out to be gay?? Is this satire?? WHAT AM I MISSING????? Also good album :)
Police Rock Reggae pretty fire. Some ecclectic side tracks on this one too along with the hits.
I've got Synchronicity a few days ago, and itvwas ok but not great. This album, Regatta De Blanc, is exactly what I was expecting on the sound of the band: white raggae. They did a good job, the album is concise and groovy, the songs are kinda fun and there are the good singles Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon. The only thing off is the off Jamaican accent, but overall, quite enjoyable album. 4/5
I actually got into this one way more than I expected! I've always loved the songs I've heard by The Police, mainly the big hits, but I never explored further into their catalog. I really enjoyed the style throughout this album, the Reggae-Rock vibe is right up my alley. So glad this one was included on the list!
fuck the police, but I do fuck with these feds
Good sound. Good vibe.
A few crackers on this one.
Wow, det hørtes akkurat ut som æ antar at The Police høres ut, godt jobba!
I forgot how good this album is
The Police’s 5-year run is something special. Regatta sometimes gets a rough ride, but I play it pretty loud and proud, and few albums I airband bass then drums then bass then drums back and forth more than this one. That said, I’m not too proud to acknowledge, grudgingly, that there a couple clunkers in the mix. It’s real damn fun though. Those drum lines are 5-stars, even if the album only gets four (effing clunkers).
Incredibly fun album! Always loved message in a bottle, never got to listen to it in full, glad I finally did :)
Buen disco, con muy buen ritmo, Copeland se luce en la batería, solo conocía Messsage in a Bottle.
I enjoyed this album listen from The Police! They have such a distinct and iconic sound as a band that when one of their songs comes on I immediately know it’s them. I love how they blend rock, reggae, new wave, and punk together in such an interesting and fun way. I had a great time listening to this album and I would listen to it again soon!
Banging. Lovely stuff.
More new wave-y than expected
The 1st 2 albums are worth my time. Everything else not so much. This is one of those 2. 4 just barely stars.
I listened to this album incessantly as a kid. The Police could play the phone book and I'd love hearing them play. But they weren't the greatest at "albums", really more of a singles band. So while I do enjoy this and I know it like the back of my hand, 5 spectacular songs on an 11 song album doth not a 5 star album make. Sorry dudes.
Fun rock album. Message In A Bottle was my fav song of the album and Bring On The Night and Walking On The Moon (my fav first listen) were my other highlights
This was quite a fun listen; upbeat and energetic in a way that felt refreshing considering the past few albums I've gone through. Definitely not perfect or anywhere close to perfect, but I had a good time
Great album. Had this rough parts later washed away by smooth pop.
White Reggae :) Love the Police's sound. Virtuosos. But for some reason, their album isn't as good as their best songs if that makes sense.
Zippy - what a vibe! Great bass album. Favourite tracks: Bring On The Night, Deathwish, Bed's Too Big Without You, Does Everyone Stare
lowk dissapointed in this one. Message in a Bottle is fantastic, but it seems they couldn't really match it in the rest of the album. That one song is working overtime
This one is kind of just a vibe to listen to. Not much to say aside from that I think. It's a good album to put on and not really pay attention to in my opinions.
High energy blend of rock, punk, raggae and ska influences. This album feels way ahead of its time. I also feel like the police were in a category of their own, making music that didn't fit into any preconceived categories but in my opinion totally worked. These guys definitely paved the way for this genre to go in all sorts of directions. Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon and legitimate hits but to me the less radio friendly and grittier songs on this album are the stand out tracks.
Strangely, I've always had an appreciation for Stewart Copeland, but I could never get into the Police. Admittedly, I've never reached past the well known singles to try listening to any of their other work. I don't think I've fully been converted to a fan while listening to Reggatta de Blanc, but there's definitely something to their mix of reggae, new-wave, and punk. There are a couple deeper cuts here that I liked a lot like Contact, Deathwish, and No Time This Time. I'll have to give this a couple more listens. I do also have to acknowledge the rest of the band. Like I said, I've always had an appreciation for Stewart Copeland, but Sting's bass playing and Andy Summers' guitar are both excellent on this album as well. It's impressive how tight, but complex these guys can get as a trio.
Solid overall.
Pretty good! The Police are kings of "white reggae" and this album has plenty of fun tracks on it. Starting off with Message in a Bottle is very strong, and weirdly I really liked On Any Other Day.
Decent. Some classics. 3.5
Almost ska.
Message in a Bottle was one of those head-turning songs I encountered at a young age that made me interested in music. Still reminds me of Florida. The Bed's Too Big Without You is such a great song title. The bass and drums go really, really hard on this album.
I like the police
“Alô quem é” “É a polícia” “Então prove, cante Message in a Bottle”
I was thrilled to see this pop up as this is an album I really love and return to often. I’ve gone for 4/5 simply because I know another of their albums which is a 5/5 for me - hoping that crops up too! I think coming out the gate with Message in a bottle is an incredibly impressive start to a record. Another highlight for me is Bring on the Night, god I love that song! I love the Police because they both challenge and humble me vocally. I do skip singing along to ‘On any other day’ though because not only did I grow up to be the gay sibling but I’m also a former teenage runaway so that one always makes me sick in my mouth a lil bit but we move 😂
A Classic! Popular without being pop. Ska for adults.
this is 4 sure 4/5
Wow, childhood memories!
Another band that people love to hate. This one is actually crammed with hits and the songs that were not singles were very excellent and varied enough that it makes this a very engaging listen.
Some true classics on here! A solid album overall!
It would have been a masterpiece if it hadn’t sound too..same? It’s like 11 variations on the same musical and vocal idea. Ok, Bring On The Night differs a bit from others, but the rest 10 - it’s like the same thing from different angles. Could just have been a small EP with Message In A Bottle, Bring On The Night, The Bed’s Too Big Without You and, say, Does Everyone Stare (just for variety, I don’t like this song)
Bekannte Songs wie „Message in a Bottle“, „Walking on the Moon“, „Bring On the Night“ und „The Bed’s Too Big Without You“ zeigen diese Mischung aus Popmelodie, Offbeat-Rhythmus und reduziertem Rocksound besonders klar. Das instrumentale Titelstück „Reggatta de Blanc“ unterstreicht zusätzlich den experimentelleren Umgang der Band mit Rhythmus und Struktur. Das Album wirkt geschlossen und konzentriert. Für mich markiert es den Punkt, an dem The Police ihre charakteristische Verbindung aus Rock und Reggae endgültig präzise formulieren.
Such a good album, no notes
Sting and the Police are great. Classic songs that still hold up today. Its music I have in playlists and listen to often. I have never listened through an entire album from start to finish tough so that was a first. The heavy reggae influences are fun but I can see why I hadn't heard most of the songs before. The few I have heard before I will listen go again but the others weren't something I will seek out again in the future.
You can never go wrong with the Police, just solid music all around. Message in a Bottle is one the greatest songs of all time.
I used to think I was a big Police fan but then I realized I was just a fan of the Greatest Hits CD which is as stacked as any greatest hits album can be. I've come to find the non-hits are pretty wacky, which I'm also good with although not ones I'd replay.
I enjoyed this one beyond the familiar singles. Probably give it some more rotations and latch onto some of the unfamiliar tracks.
Fun album to listen to.
Liked this album much more than the last one I had in December. Would honestly rerate that one a 2 and this a 4 if I could go back. But this will keep the 4
Love the reggae twist
Brilliant Record. Ate this right up
Man, The Police are understandably milquetoast for a lot of people, but when I first heard this album in high school they were sort of groundbreaking in my head because besides them being good at the reggae bit, they felt like a punk band without distortion like in No Time This Time (I found Minutemen later). I honestly think I looked them up after finding out Stewart Copeland did the soundtrack for the PS1 Spyro games. His drumming is super dynamic and energetic, but I think he shines more on other albums. Walking On The Moon has a very iconic hi-hat break with a vibrant groove throughout, though, when you're mellowed out enough to deal with Sting's awful Patois. As much as I love this record, there is a fair bit of filler (Regatta De Blanc, Deathwish, Contact), but Sting, Andy Summers, and Copeland's playing are tight as hell on this. The melancholy of Bed's Too Big Without You and Does Everyone Stare make them my favorites of this one.
I like it but I don’t love it. I knew that the police had some great punk songs but they must be on their earlier album. But I still enjoyed it.
classic
4.14
Great album, nice voice with a unique sound
Consistently great. Love the rhythms and melodies. The songs are so propulsive. Of the 3 or so Police albums I’ve heard, this is my favorite.
3.75
Message In a Bottle is a hell of a song, liked most of the rest too.
Tolle Musiker!
My old friend Kurt used to love Frank Sinatra and the Police. That seemed that such disparate tastes at the time, but lately not so much. It was nice to be reminded how fun and “modern” the Police were.
I really like The Police. The familiar singles on this album are by far the strongest songs, with the rest being a bit filler. Bring on the Night was new to me, great song. Had to rate 4 due to Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon being such classics.
4/5
I knew "message in a bottle" without knowing it. Anyway good album, not great.
Usually strictly a Best Of band for me, but this was really pretty good
I think this is my favourite record of theirs.
5/11, 45%
What to say about Reggatta de Blanc? Firstly the title track bangs with energy that feels almost ahead of its time. Listening to this album gave me a new appreciation for Copeland's drumming chops and style. Actually I wasn't fully aware that Stewart Copeland was the drummer of the Police before I talked about the record with friends after giving it a play through, so if nothing else I finally put that piece of the puzzle together. Elsewhere though, the record is notably full of varied vocal textures, styles and most weirdly - accents, this leaves some songs feel extremely disconnected from the rest, for example `On Any Other Day`. Another surprise the album holds for instance, is Kermit the frog delivering the first verse of `Does Everyone Stare`, which is otherwise a true heater of a song for the genre. Again I'd give a lot of credit to Copeland here However the iconic sound and groove of `Message In A Bottle` is undeniable and atmospheric, which actually is true for much of the record. In spite of (not because of) Sting's faux Jamaican patois in `Walking on the Moon`, that particular song and its siblings on the album (`The Beds too Big...` etc) contains a certain smokey cinematic magic which is very hard to find outside of records like Hats by the Blue Nile. For all it's idiosyncrasies, this is a records I can definitely see myself listening to again on a quiet night in the city.
Now this is some copaganda i can get behind. Big fan of the vibe of this, didn’t necessarily stop me in my tracks but would defs listen again.
Sting being both the bassist and the vocalist feels central to The Police’s sound. The dry, lightweight guitar paired with instantly memorable bass lines feels distinctive, even within UK rock of that era. While the band is often described as “white reggae,” it never feels like a simple imitation. Rather, it almost sounds as if Sting created his own genre.
3.7
Plucky, solid, thoughtful.
Good album, great drums, singing and bass id put this on whenever
3.5+/5
Such a good bit to have an album named “White Boy Reggae” and have, like, two songs that sound like reggae songs. Loved the hits on this album, but loved the in between songs even more. Fun!
Alice Cooper's been around for longer than I have, which is saying something, though this album's marginally younger than me, and personally I think it's one of his better ones. Quite a few of the tracks have stood the test of time, and there are rockers out there today who are still trying to do what Cooper was doing back in the early 70s. Yeah, maybe I'm biased, but this one gets a full five stars.
Sting is such a smug wanker now that I tend to forget that he was in a bloody good band once upon a time.
White reggae
I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. There are some really great hooks but the band also know the exact right moments to hold off. And Andy Summers is amazing.
Solid album with a number of great songs including Message In A Bottle, Bring On The Night and Walking On The Moon.
Their second album was a springboard for them, and unlike the raw, punk-rock first, it emphasizes reggae (as reflected in the title). Sting, who hasn't yet fully developed his style, still vocally mimics Bob Marley, and the backbone of the music is, of course, Stewart Copland, whose energetic yet relaxed drums run like a skeleton throughout the record. It's a shame he's not quite as accomplished a songwriter, and the three fillers he contributed prevent me from giving the album the highest score.
Better than expected.
I usually don’t enjoy the police too much but this shit weren’t bad
Nice to hear the album and not just the singles. Good stuff.
Classic Police
A classic. Here the band explores Reggae and ska sounds, a departure from their punk roots. It works. Highly musical and engaging. Summers’ guitar playing is sublime and inventive— he sets the stage for The Edge, and gives Fripp a run for his money. Copeland’s drumming is creative, fun, and tasteful. (Any other Day is problematic, but hey, it was 1979. People that know better now, didn’t then). Still, this album is not the band’s best work. But I’ll definitely listen to it anytime. A 4.
Some mediocre riff raff holds this back from a superb album, however the highs are really high. Bring on the night is a heater.
Message in a bottle
These guys were such magnificent musicians. Overall vibe I get is they're maybe more forgotten about than they should be, but the pendulum always swings. More instrumental stuff than I would have expected having only heard hits, and synchronicity as a whole album in the past.
I had fairly high expectations for this album, as it's usually considered to be one of The Police's best. While I think it's great overall, with excellent performances from Sting, Summers and Copeland, I still feel like some of the songs were a bit lacklustre when it comes to songwriting. The album has its highlights like 'Message in a Bottle', 'Walking On the Moon' and the title-track, but at least on first listen a few of the album's songs didn't feel all that memorable. They're good, but they don't stand out on their own. All in all, the album's a great listen, but it's not quite on par with some of the other albums on here. 4/5
Highlights: Message In a Bottle, Reggatta de Blanc, It's Alright For You, On Any Other Day, Contact, Does Everyone Stare, No Time This Time Fine record, but mostly same-ish sound scattered all over the place. But the sound is good, so it's not that much of a problem. The songs where the reggae was mixed with the new wave sounds were a standout. I mean, they all sound like new wave, but some did a bit more than the others if that makes sense (for example Contact). I liked how it got a bit livelier by the end of the record - it's usually the other way around, so this was a welcome change. The lyrical content also got progressively more interesting by the end - from some suburban midlife horror, rush of the urban life to a POV of a insecure guy with a crush (very relatable 🤓). Overall I was quite pleased with the record.
4.5
good album but not my fav
Favorite track(s): Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, The Bed's Too Big Without You, No Time This Time Heard before Previous rating: 7/10
Police, né? Disco clássico com message in the bottle
pretty cool vibes
It was a fun listen. Catchy and upbeat.
I WAS going to say that the Police are the ultimate “the Greatest Hits suffice” type of band, and that I didn’t care much about the “deep tracks” on the individual albums, but then I listened to this one in full and decided that it’s actually pretty good Clash-lite edgy pop/ reggae/ punk!
Message in a bottle is a classic and good, but Bring on the Night is actually my fave. There are some misses on the album, with some 5s (messgae, bring on, contact) and some 2s (its alright, on any other day, beds too big)
Was a fun listen. Never really listened to Police before. Would give it a 3.5
Very very very solid album I will listen to lots of the songs again
spoko, nic specjalnego
wasn't sure about on any other day but enjoyed the rest. Solid 4.
Weißer Reggae, The Police! liebe grüße an Klas. c
Classic album with classic songs, I’ve heard some of them, and discover new ones. I’m starting to rate this albums but how many times I wanted to hit skip on the songs, how many new discoveries I did, and how much I liked the concept of the album overall. Really enjoyed this one, I wanted to skip just 2 of the songs, but they were interesting songs in concept.
Very enjoyable! The Police are able to stay unique while still being approachable and pop-y
This surprised me, I wrote enjoyed it despite thinking I wouldn't.
Pretty sad. But sounds upbeat. A lot of the songs are about how messed up his life is.
Does everyone stare, i love this song
1. Message in a bottle=9/10 2. Regatta de blanc=6/10 3. It’s alright for you=7/10 4. Bring on the night=9/10 5. Deathwish=7/10 6. Walking on the moon=8/10 7. On any other day=6/10 8. The beds too big without you=7/10 9. Contact=6/10 10. Does everyone stare=9/10 11. No time this time=8/10 Overall=8/10
It's the police, it's good
Never was a big fan of the Police, might need to rethink that.
> The Beatles
3 stars for “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon”, but giving it 4 stars simply for drummer Stuart Copeland - his absolute mastery of his craft is on full display here, and elevates some of the more forgettable songs into something much more listenable
Really a 4.5
Wonderful record by the golden age of The Police. Message in a Bottle is incredible, and the whole record is solid.
Lowk good. Not quite right
It’s way ahead of its time I didn’t even realise
Pretty good very 70s
Mochte ich wirklich gern
Actually vibes
A bit of reggae and a bit of punk rock makes for a pretty good album
I cannot tolerate Sting for even a second, but this is good.
*Message in a Bottle is awesome *Great overall album- just gets a little weird at times to keep it from a 5
It's a great album. I don't think it's their best, but still... a unique sound with great songwriting and playing. It has legendary tracks, but also some filler ones. A strong 4/5
Class. The Police deserve some appreciation for albums like this.
151223 20:03 3.5
Decent album, Message in a bottle is the stand out track though.
This project is bringing The Police to surface for me.
Always liked the earlier Police more than Synchronicity-era.
I am not an expert on The Police as my previous exposure was only what was on the radio. I have never taken a deep dive on the band until this list (which wouldn't take long as there are only five albums). We already had Syncronicity, which set my bar very high for anything that came before. This album is really good, some classics for sure, but it seems like the band is definitely building until they reach their breaking point. I would like to listen to all five albums in order, to hear the progression.
