Reviews (page 12 of 14)

Maybe it will grow on me. I like the way it embodies creepy vibes but it was alot to take in on first listen

Xylophone goes hard on one song but overall this album grated on my ears. Two stars

Empieza bien pero después se hace muy pesado, más con boludo del vocalista desafinando.

4 out of the 10 songs on this album are classic, the others are hot garbage. As this should be held to a higher standard for being on this list, dropping this to 1.5/5

songs were pretty similar to each other, not so different sounds explored, nice background music though, i would rate it 2.5 out of 5 stars

Pretty good sound and lyrics. Did not know anything by them.

I think I used to get Violent Femmes and Jane's Addiction confused in my head. I never really liked either, tbh. At least what I heard on the radio in the 90s. Anyway, I already knew five of the ten songs on the original album from 1983(!). And they're from Milwaukee??

Raskasta kuunneltavaa. Tekotaiteellista paskaa? Ehkä jossain määrin vaikka kyllä kai tämä rock / punk-sceneen taitaa mennä. En taida kuunnella uudestaan. 2/5

Ehhhhh

Some good rythms but not really appealing to finish the album. too rock for me.

under stimulating

I’m all for a bit of unserious music but this got tiresome

Kuuntelukertojen perusteella ihmeen suosittua, sama biisi 12 kertaa. Ei jatkoon

Suht ärsyttävä laulutapa ja ääni "laulajalla". Musiikki olisi ehkä saattanut olla kolkin arvoista, mutta nyt tippuu kagoseen.

Sexually frustrated angst noise... It's punk and that is what I more or less expect. I just don't like it that much in a normal listening context. Probably makes for a fun show but not exactly for musical appreciation, rather a visceral emotional out cry. Not cerebral at all, pure brain stem in a reptilian way as if the Id itself made music.

Enjoyed the first couple of songs but it just descended into very boring droning punk. I like punk but this felt like music you suddenly discovered at 17. I think if the singer's voice doesn't really have any range or sounds very similar harmoniously then I get bored quite quickly. Where is the range? He just talk-sing through half of it. Some cracking songs surrounded by filler.

Ei iskenyt. Pitäis ehkä kuunnella uudestaan. 2,25/5.

The alternative station had a number of songs from this album in heavy rotation in the late 80s, especially Blister in the Sun and Kiss Off. Hearing these songs definitely have a nostalgia factor for me, but I had not heard this album in its entirety until now. This album has some great highs, but also horrendous lows. Blister in the Sun and Kiss Off are definitely high points -- nice guitar work and drumming. Please Do Not Go starts promising with an impressive acoustic bass guitar feature, and Gone Daddy Gone has a cool marimba part. In most cases however, the vocals are where things ultimately fall short. At times the singer sounds like a muppet attempting reggae. Some of the lyrics are just bad. The last song Gimme the Car is outright predatory and creepy. I'll probably revisit the first two tracks in the future, but not much else.

I get it. One track I really liked, surprised me.

A couple good songs on here but mostly annoying lyrics over the top of pretty decent instrumental

Etwas kraftlos

Neat to hear a band cutting an album in the early 80s with a half foot in the 1950s and a foot and a half in the 1990s. Other than the surprising recording date and me not liking Blister in the Sun as much as I remember I really didn't care for any of this. Three minute songs shouldn't feel this long.

God that was unbelievably frustrating to listen to. Nothing there was even worth a second listen, but because I don’t rate music low it naturally rounds up to a 40, even if I feel like it’s a 0 at some points.

On The Femmes' debut record, their reliance on acoustic instruments to perform their punky tunes frankly comes across as annoying shtick. There are some solid songs here but this is a ratty and ugly-sounding record.

1st part better than the second

Sympa. Sans plus !

I know “Blister in the Sun” and one or two more sound familiar. Decent album, not sure I could listen to for a prolonged period.

Not particularly keen. Stylistically it's OK, but the vocal whine really put me off. I won't listen to this again

Pretty grating, and when you think you it can't get any more grating, they've got a xylophone song that sounds like a level from Crash Bandicoot. Good Feeling is a decent closer with a nice enough arrangement, but it's too late. It's far too late.

Darn, I thought I was going to like this more than I did having listened to select Femmes tracks in the past. This one is a pass for me outside of a few OK songs.

its like hes shakey talking to sing, i feel like this guy would excel in a different genre. Personally i do not perfer folky stuff. also didnt know these songs were this old. Good instrument in "To The Kill"

Rather disappointed that I don't like this, after gauging the fairly positive reception for this album. The rumbling bass work, which sits prominently in the album's mix, was a nice flourish, and the songs themselves are easy enough to get on board with, but the deal-breaker was the vocals, which I absolutely cannot stand. The sort of whiny American nonsense which makes me want to flip a table.

Me aburrió bastante, no es mi estilo. Me gustaron las guitarras, no mucho las letras. Además después de reprodujo Country Death Song y me traumatizó.

Not really for me.

underwhelming still

I’m caught in a pickle here because the opening song is a classic song that I’m glad I finally figure out who sings it but other than that there’s a couple other songs coming in to the album that I’m glad I discovered too, but the rest of that it was just such a chore to get through all the songs kind of have the same similar theme, which I usually like, but at this point it just didn’t work out so I don’t wanna give it a one, but I think it kind of earned a one so we’re gonna give it a two but I don’t think I’m ever gonna return to this album Again unless I want to listen to the first song we’re gonna be a little nicer and give him a two, but if I listen to it again, it probably could get a one. There’s some gems in the deluxe edition too kind of just lost its luster glad to be able to move on

Blister in the sun is an okay song, rest of the album sounds very similar, lacks variety and vocals can get annoying. 1/12 songs liked

Not a fan of the sound, but the singles were good.

I found this to be pretty forgettable.

not invested at all sorry

Had high expectations because the only song I knew was blister in the sun and I like that song. But turns out that song is the only reason this song isn’t getting a 1 star. Thought it was terrible the lead guys singing is jarring and there’s absolutely no redeeming qualities in terms of production or instrumentals.

Blister in the Sun is not great. There are some decent tracks here besides that

Mid album at best, way too much spoken word, okay melody but generally not my style

Unknown band. Some good tunes. A few not so good. Overall, an OK album.

The music off the album is nice and uplifting but it is violently 80s and I listen to a lot of 80s rock and trash so I don’t mind it but this album was like I was walking down the hall with a trapperkeeper and a walkman

First time listen, and I wasn't too impressed by it even if I usually like folkish/punk music. Musically it sounds ahead of its time but somehow still sounds badly produced, and the whole thing off key. Perhaps I need more relistens to enjoy it more.

Certainly different from anything I'd ever normally listen to. Admittedly I never would have guessed this album came out in 1983 - it sounds like something out of the late 2010s indie scene, so props for it aging well. That doesn't mean I enjoyed it a whole lot. Outside of the opener the album feels disjointed and whiny without being nearly as catchy after the opener. Points for creativity, loss of points for not being good

Not good

When I first listened to Blister in the Sun, I thought to myself "yeah this is a sick song, I'm gonna go listen to the rest of the album - I bet it's great!" Boy was I in for a disappointment, because this is shite. I recognise it's significance and the fact folk punk had probably never been done before, but Jesus the only song on this things that's enjoyable is the first one. After that it's just an exercise of looking at the time and wondering when it will stop.

Strong start Instantly forgettable middle order Xylophone interlude Wagging tail Epstein esc finale

Wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this after the first couple of tracks, but as the album went on my impression changed. Still probably wouldn't be something I return to anytime soon, but there were some tracks I legitimately enjoyed. Better when they have the bit between their teeth. Favourite Track: Add It Up

Let me come clean with what I'm bringing to this: I've come to really hate "Blister in the Sun", its a catchy tune but it annoys me. Like, a lot. So I knew this would be one I'd have to remove the biases. The album doesnt get much better from there, it is this sort of weird Gen X campy rock that doesnt even know if its ironic or earnest and rough, they actually have a decent sense of melody and musicality but i just hear this and dont really know what to do. Sounds like Lou Reed filtered through a less self-serious and campy Gen X filter. It's a solid 2.5 that I'll round down because some my other 3s were a lot better than this.

Mmmmewh

It started off strong with Blister in the Sun, but I honestly did not enjoy this. It got more chaotic as it went, and the subject matter is not my cup of tea.

I personally didn’t really enjoy this album. This type of music is just not my favourite.

I had this CD when I was a kid and I think even then I only ever listened to the first two songs and 'Add It Up' which I can no longer stomach. This gets same-y even at 35 minutes but it's fine .

Not a fan lyrically

It was okay.

There were no femmes involved in the making of this album.

An interesting listen. Still trying to decide what I mean by interesting. It is unlike anything I have ever heard before but I don’t think I’m unhappy I haven’t heard anything like it before. A lot of tracks seem like they would sound good once fully realised, but it sounds like a record of demos. Favourite track- Good Feeling

definitely a lot of noise in the middle of this album but 'blister in the sun' and 'gone daddy gone' are the songs i heard and enjoyed. I loved the xylophone in 'gone daddy gone' and parts of 'confessions' was alright. I really did like 'good feeling' though, that's a really nice and sweet song. I think the songs I liked didn't take this to beyond a 2 though for me.

It may be sacrilegious for me to say as a Wisconsinite, but I absolutely despise "Blister in the Sun." It's this twee, commercial-core garbage sung horribly and overplayed to death since its release 40 years ago. The rest of the album was all new to me, and it was fine, I guess. Like a lot of one-hit wonder bands, the other stuff is better than their one hit. Super lo-fi which is not usually my sound, but overall it reminded me of Neutral Milk Hotel, but not as good. Would not listen again, but defo not in "Incredible String Band" tier.

bored during

Something very different! Not the kind of thing I would usually listen to. Not a huge fan of the repetitiveness of the lyrics and the scratchy folkish music but I liked the raw experimental vibe of it all. A very passionate and angry album with lots of interesting sounds that leap and clash into each other. I can see how this album’s unique style has inspired many artists since. Favourite song: Good Feeling- this song was a lot more chilled out compared to some of the others.

Honestly I don’t think there’s much more to this band than being a one-hit-wonder.

Sounds unserious.

Ei kyllä uponnut

Name the band and album Violent Femmes, and then be a bunch of juvenile dudes. Reasonable. Not a fan of this. Can't shake the string rattle of the first two songs off my head. Overall the whole album just sounded bad and raw. Very amateurish. The lyrics were also... while witty at times, mostly annoying and dude-ish. I guess the only applause I can give them is sounding fairly modern and fresh for being recorded '82. Sounds like something from the early 2000's.

It has all the sounds and style I like from that music period, but for some reason I didn't like it.

I did not like this album

Not too bad, instruments sound good. If possible I‘d given 2.5 stars.

Acoustic punk is probably my favourite type of punk...but that's not saying much

Heard of Blister In The Sun but had no idea! Not my kind of style but a fun listen. Top song: Blister In The Sun

Not my fav. Whiny white boy sound

Blister In The Sun is kinda charming until you hear a whole album of it.

folk is not my thing

thought it would be a woman singing lol. idk if it’s my personal cup of tea tbh

I can definitely understand the appeal but it definitely has just a bit of repetitiveness that i probably need a bit more time to get used to. Imma hear this album just a bit more and then expand more on ehat i brlieve because other than what it probably influenced i believe it just lacks an it factor

Just another alt rock teenage angst album. Me imagino que es de los primeros y más icónicos de este tipo que ha inspirado a sus sucesores

I liked the first song on this album and then the rest became pretty repetitive, so I turned it off. This either isn't my style or I was just in the mood to relax.

I was annoyed.

Couple good tunes

Gone Daddy Gone is fun with the xylophone, CeeLo Green did a good one on that! It’s the only redeeming factor though, rest is too washed and underproduced for my taste

I did not like it it was not my vibe

Not for me.

When you don't like a band, or even a whole genre of music, one of the initial responses can be "this all sounds the same". My dad has written off James Brown's post-1968 Live at the Apollo Vol. 2 career thusly. Anyway, this whole album sounds the same. Not for me, but not as "not for me" as the Boss or something. Oh dip, how many Springsteen albums are going to be part of this 1001? I bet there are going to be more Springsteen albums than Grant Green albums. OK I'm giving myself this out, now that I realize I've hypothetically got 998 days to go. When the second Springsteen album comes up before a single Grant Green album, I'm out. Is this list 1001 different artists? I am almost excited to find out and will avoid doing any research.

Album #9: Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes Genre (according to Wikipedia): Folk punk, post-punk, college rock, alternative rock Singles?: Gone Daddy Gone Have you heard any songs from this album or group before?: Only “Blister in the Sun.” Thoughts?: I’ve never heard music like this before. It’s always interesting to listen to new genres, especially with a genre like folk punk. Gano writes quite the lyrics, I’m impressed at how he was eighteen when he wrote the lyrics. Unfortunately, besides some of the lyrics, I fear I may not be able to get into this genre of music. Maybe it’s not my style. My opinion is changing with each subsequent song. In the end, this genre is interesting, but I have mixed feelings about how this album sounds, that’s all. The later songs changed my initial opinion. Favorite songs: Blister in the Sun, Add It Up*, Confessions, Promise, Gone Daddy Gone, Good Feeling As a writer, what can you use this music for to hone your craft?: If I had to, some scenes at a college. Only select songs however. No file correlations.

Not my style, not bad. I can see why other people would like it, but meh.

Has a pretty unique sound, but so does a jackhammer on granite

it was fine

I’ve loved a lot of bands that were influenced by these guys, and presumably by this record. On paper, I admire this one too: punk attitude and songs by a decidedly non-punk-sounding combo, scrappy production, raw performances. But I straight up do not enjoy listening to this. First offense is the lyrics. Some of these songs sound like incel anthems. I’m so mad because nobody’s having sex with me, etc. Second offense is the vocal tone and melodies get really repetitive and grating after a while. Third offense is how many of the songs go on way too long. Takes away some of the punk points tbh. Make your songs shorter!

Not my cup of tea, don't like the voice

I really don’t know how others rate albums. Is it based on influence? Its history? Rawness? The production? Or just the overall listening experience? This album is kinda a mixed bag for me. The good tracks are interesting, to be fair, but the others just are not my cup of tea.

'Blister in the Sun' is a classic, but found myself skipping songs towards the end feeling ready for a little less chaos.

Not heard of this band before. Worth a listen-we’re they the band that others bands listened to?

Another album in which there is one great song and the song is important if only for its immense popularity but nothing else stacks up. I personally have played Blister in the Sun at least 750 times. Always to a drunk woman making sure I stick exactly to the structure. Always a woman. Always drunk. There you go. 2 stars.

Not my style. Almost whiney to me

Meh tbh

Familiar with this record. Always found it somehow annoying. I really tried to listen with fresh ears but I still really struggled with it. At times it sounds a little like Dylan and at times there are some funk or grove like elements - some really fun rhythmic instrumentation.. But there's something about the "too cool for music" delivery that just annoys me and I can't get into it. I'll try again some day.

I was expecting something different when I saw the album cover. Wasn't really impressed by it.

Fine. Heard the fists one on films but nothing else stood out

I never could get into these guys. I know friends who like them but, they just don't click with me. I don't know why but they just miss the mark. Maybe it's the fact I like my punk with electric over acoustic guitars. Whatever the case, this doesn't resonate with me.

Not at all what I was expecting- and that’s where the good news ends. I managed to make it through the entire album without skipping a track but it was a sore test as it’s quite bad. Horrible vocals, inane lyrics and musically barely above middle school bands. This album reinforces the fact that 10% of the bands produce 90% of the good music and bands like this are wasting time, space, our time and their lives.

No son mujeres :(

can't help but reflect on a very wise woman's words in regards to this album: "bitch me too! the fuck." highlights - blister in the sun, prove my love, promise

It’s as if the clangers dropped acid and recorded an LP. Worst album on here so far

The lyrics were interesting and the first song was a classic.

Never heard of this artist or album BOOM let's get into it. I am in crippling album debt at this juncture of my music-listening career and desperately need to offset the cost of writing these introductory paragraphs. After scrutinising this album cover to deduce its very nature, I propose the hypothesis that this is a punk kind of album. Blammo, some degree of punk. It's not a full boom since the album is buried under a prominent folk influence, though it's a half-splosion all the same. I'm not a punk guy, and I don't suspect I ever will be given that everything the genre stood for is now the motto of every transnational corporation ever. The sound of this album is pretty alright. The mellow sounds on the guitars are paired nicely with the melodic, unique vocal style. "Blister In the Sun" is a solid opener. The guitarwork is pretty good, and I enjoy the vocal style. The rest of the album kinda blends together, though it does a decent job of being somewhat varied. Book time. Not an instant hit, but found success over time. That's about it. Moving over to Wikipedia reveals that this album was well-received and landed on a few best-of lists. I guess I can turn a blind eye to this one - it's pretty unique. I cosign this inclusion.

Interesting! I think there's a reason that Blister In the Sun is the most popular track from the album. All in all, it's pretty cool and ahead of it's time, but its not my favorite.

Shitty drums and acoustic guitars when they should have been electric. Blister In The Sun is great, I don’t need the rest.

Ne znam ni sama šta reći, na trenutke zanimljivo, na trenutke naporno, brijem da mi je samo previše u komadu ovako nešto slušati. Ali ima okej stvari, ono nije mi najgore što sam slušala tu. 2/5, 3/10

This was fine. Like Blister in the Sun is good but a whole album of variations on that is maybe not for me, and it didn’t have any nostalgia factor that everyone else seems to have with it.

In the words of José I has nozing to zay. I think it was pretty good. It's not ground breaking. Gotta go 2 stars on the app because I don't think I'd realisticallt give it a 6. Probably like 5.9

Kinda of lost me after the first two songs (mainly due to being familiar with them) not something I was super into but I guess it wasnt terrible

Whiney in a way that reminds me people born in the 70s still had a childhood.

Was just okay, 4.8/10

Vill gilla det, men kan inte.

It’s the Ramones if they went acoustic and hired the bass player from Primus. I like all that stuff, so I should like this more than I do. Perhaps it’s the fact that this was so overplayed in the mid 80s that it has created a multi-decade hangover I can’t seem to recover from (evidence of this - some of the album tracks like “Promise” I find vastly more appealing than the beat to death “Blister In The Sun”). Unequivocally original, but just something I ever want to listen to ever again.

OK. Couple of decent songs.

I know the first song which was fun. The rest are okay. I can see why the rest didn’t ever become popular

Blister on the Sun and Gone Daddy Gone aren't enough. 1.5 if I could

Regi likes this, 80s punk rock she calls it, I dont think its quite that 😂 Couple of good songs.

I didn't care for it, mostly because I don't like the sound of this guy's voice.

I enjoy one offs listens, but the album back to back grates on me with their off key singing and low quality sound design.

A big, neurotic, clanging slab of lo-fi acoustic "alternative", Violent Femmes stands completely out of place, erected as it was in the spring of 1983. I suppose that makes them somewhat ahead of their time, and there is little here I am inclined to say is necessarily terrible. At its best it sounds like Lou Reed does Talking Heads unplugged; at its worst it just comes across as a bit of a juvenile lark committed to a portastudio by a group of sniggering six-form students during their lunch break. I suppose the problem is the quirky, often frivolous, treatment is what stays with you far longer than any of the actual songs do. It has its moments, but they are spread a little to thinly for my liking.

Catchy but repetitive

Not my style. Boring. Don't like the singer's voice

Sound is ok Songs uninspiring, if you can't write good songs, throw in a few covers

This is basically a repeat of the Modern Lovers Album (see two reviews ago). The singer's voice is a little less whiny, but the album is still pretty rubbish overall. Not enough melody, uninspired lyrics, kind of an unpolished sound

God, this is so boring. I didn’t like it back in the 80s when my friends did & definitely not now. Blister In The Sun is alright, but that’s about it.

"Blister in the Sun" is the only one I recognized, and now I know why. Some of the songs were interesting or funny, but I wouldn't exactly can them good.

Please Do Not Go //

Not as good as I was expecting actually

not for me lyrically so i didn’t enjoy this much. musically it’s quite cool i guess. the chorus to gone daddy gone” sounds very much like the part in foo fighters “all my life” that goes “done done and i’m on to the next one”. also super cool solo of whatever cool instrument that is xD “gone daddy gone” is my fave song on the record, and mostly the only song i really enjoyed. this sound in 1983 feels so early and ahead of its time, plus points for that. 2/5

After re-reading the Wikipedia page for this album after listening to it, and noting that most of the songs were written by an 18-year old high school student, I realised why "schoolboyish" was the word that kept popping into my head while the album played. For me, "schoolboyish" is a negative when it comes to music, and apart from that issue, I just found the whole album vaguely irritating, despite some good guitar riffing in places. However, even the riffing wasn't enough to elevate the album above a two-star rating for me.

Pavement or cake but just slightly worse to my ears.

Very basic songs badly sung, borrowing heavily from early Clash. Yet there is a charm about it. Not something worth returning to but it is very definitely a moment in time

This was screaming one hit wonder Opened with a banger and it was all downhill from there 2 ⭐️

..............

bad. not good

What a mess.

1. Blister In The Sun - 7 Instrumentally this is a brilliant track. The sound of the vocals is the issue I have with the track here. It's very rough sounding signing and the quiet part at the end of the song becomes hard to follow along with. 2. Kiss Off - 2 Horrendous opening into a very repetitive section into just... random talking? Absolutely no flow to the song. Completely random, completely directionless, completely pointless. 3. Please Do Not Go - 3 Just soulless sounding music. Lyrics are very random in tone, length, and delivery. Instrumentally it's okay but a bit basic. Guitar part in the middle is the only redeeming thing in the track. The mini-monologue towards the end is incredibly annoying to listen to. 4. Add It Up - 8 Much better sound with miles better lyrics than what has previously been on the album. Verses are solid and the chrous is really good as well. The rolling of the drum throughout is great and it makes the transition into the lighter part of the song seamless. Guitar adds a very nice compliment of sound to the feeling of anger and frustration the song portrays throughout before breaking out into a brilliant riff on the bridge at the half way mark. 5. Confessions - 1 Absolutely dreadful song with absolutely awful lyrics. Instrumentally there's not a lot to opine here as the song they are basically played like a funeral procession is going on. Guitar and drums finally kick in brilliantly 3 minutes in but outside of that it's an entirely uninspiring track. 6. Prove My Love - 6 Better song with a lot of fun in the instruments and even the background vocals. Overall a sound track. 7. Promise - 6 Sound is great and lyrically the song is fine. My issue is when the verse is broken with a speaking element like in the first verse. It just breaks the tempo and the feel of what the song is trying to portray. 8. To The Kill - 3 Lyrically the song stumbles all over itself before randomly signing "to the kill". Guitar in second half of the track sounds fantastic but it will randomly veer of course at times both a minute in and at the end of the solo/bridge. 9. Gone Daddy Gone - 10 Outrageously good song. Lyrically it's fantastic and the sounds of all the instruments each add a phenomenal amount of character to the track. The chorus is incredibly catchy to sing to. Just a brilliant track. 10. Good Feeling - 4 The piano on this track is the highlight. It sounds great but the lyrics are hard to follow along with in terms of their message and their meaning. Guitar in the middle sounds good. Other than that, it's a slow burner of a track. 11. Ugly (1983 Rough Trade UK Single) - 6 Overall not a bad track. The guitar sounds so incredibly dirty and amazing on this track. Lyrics follow a great tempo and tune but the verses are a bit odd and lose the plot a bit. Other than that, it's okay. 12. Gimmie the Car (1983 Rough Trade UK Single) - 1 Lyrically this song is abysmal and it's five full minutes of this unfortunately. There's nothing instrumentally that can save this song from being a complete and total abomination. Average Rating: 4.75 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 2.38 Rounded Down: 2 Stars

i see the influence but hard on the head

Damn, these guys are overrated. I don’t know what people like here. Whiny atonal vocals? ✅ Simplistic arrangements? ✅ Inane lyrics? ✅. Hilariously, they’re still touring… old dudes rolling out the same tired adolescent giggles. Sigh…. A wasteland of ear rubbish. 2 stars for Pride Month.

Why does it sound like has been played directly from a tuna can

I can appreciate the minimalism of this, and how fresh it would have sounded when new, but a few tracks in it all blends together and the vocals grate.

The music, lyrics, performance are all subpar. Didn’t like it. I can understand why teenage outsiders would strongly relate to this, but it doesn’t move me.

Nada de fenomenal, a não ser uma ou duas músicas do álbum. Há outros exemplos desta década muito melhores que este álbum.

It's amazing how popular some of this band's songs were given how awful the lead singer's voice is. Some weird stuff in here other than the well-known ones.

Unique mix of punk and folk. Not sure I’ve heard many albums like it before. Punk has never really connected with me so this was an interesting experience. Glad to have listened but probably wont come back too again

This album made me sad because it had everything it needed to be great, but the vocals completely ruined it. It seemed like every song wanted to be humorous or whiny? If the lead singer actually sung this would be great. I adore the album cover though!

Mediocre.

Trendsetting sounds to be found here. However I don't feel like listening to it again.

Cringe and Milwaukeepilled. Previously listened to 4 songs off of this album (Blister In The Sun; Kiss Off; Add It Up; Gone Daddy Gone) Listened to this just a week or so before starting this project. As a current MKE resident and long-time lover of Blister In The Sun (was OBSESSED with this song as a little kid), I wanted so badly to see what all the hype was, but this didn't live up to my expectations. As someone that actually does appreciate MKE's music scene quite a bit, I can totally see their continuing influence on the local bands I've seen perform throughout my years here, so that's pretty neat. Favorite Song: Add It Up

I feel like this album is just making up the numbers. 2.

There were a couple of great songs on this album, and a lot of confused ones.

Gillar första låten men sen blir det inte roligare än så.

Put me to sleep. Last song was cool

Even though it's totally not my genre I had to appreciate the sheer raw energy of this album.

it's not my favorite but of course glad i listeneddddd

1230 am and laid in bed pissed after celebrating the mighty Leeds United’s return to the Premier League. I recollect, just about, listening to this earlier and thought it was The Ramones playing acoustically and thinking WTF is Folk Punk. Well now I know but would have preferred to have been kept in the dark. If the 1001 God’s did promotions then today I should have got Employment by the Kaiser Chiefs. I Predict A Riot. If you know you know. MOT WAFFLL. 2/5 21/4/25

Her hadde eg også store forhåpninga, men va ikkje for meg detta heller

Not for me

I hate Lou Reed

Wasn't a fan of this though did know more than i thought

I don't know. Maybe I just don't like the violent femmes

Started off fine but then how can anybody listen to this for 45 mins is beyond me.

I can see why the blank teens in Sabrina the Teenage Witch liked this band.

The only song on this album I knew coming in is Blister in the Sun. OK, I also know Kiss Off. I like a lot of irritating music. Not this though.

annoying ass voice

Acoustic punk is something I never thought I would hear. I don't know how to feel about this.

Loved Blister in the Sun. Not a fan of the rest. 2/5

Seems alright. Not blowing my mind or anything. Hear heavy Rolling Stones influences. Ok, the last song actually got me now. Love the violin/cello?

I really enjoyed the moments of barely held together chaos in the instrumental parts, especially in Add It Up and Kiss Off, and the fun xylophone in Gone Daddy Gone. The band's acoustic texture is awesome, dirty but clear enough that the moving parts are still discernible. On the other hand, I actually had to keep myself from laughing at certain parts listening to the lead vocalist. The talking moments and lyrics are pathetic, but they sound from the heart and are almost excusable given the songwriter was a high schooler when he wrote them. There are plenty of catchy classics on this album that are maybe even good, but the teenage angst is so well-communicated (in that pathetic kind of way) I can't bring myself to put the Femmes in my listening rotation. Final verdict: the Violent Femmes' sound is great on this album, but the lyrics are a major turn-off.

Probably fine. I was not in the mood.

An undesirable torture bookended by two interesting songs.

A very 6 music style album. Got very repetitive very quickly

Violent Femmes — американская рок-группа, образовавшаяся в 1980 году. Название группы, с учётом сленга, можно перевести как «Отчаянные слюнтяи». Странно, очень быстро и сильно, все песни одинаковые

point8.

It's not terrible but I'll never get on with that voice

This album has good compositions and interesting instrumentation, but falls flat vocally and lyrically. Not something I'm likely to listen to again.

I burned myself out on this album in high school during the 80’s. Hard to listen to it with fresh ears these 30 some years later.

Not sure what to make of this album. As a fan of Lou Reed I could detect a Lou Reedesque tone throughout but in a way I found it a but irritating. Maybe that's unfair because the vocals were good throughout, I am maybe letting bias cloud my judgement. The more acoustic tracks weren't a bad listen but some other tracks diabolical. Overall I think it's worthy of the top end of 2 stars

Folk Punk made of whiny, winchy and screamy vocals straining my patience while having some promising instrumental parts which the rest of the album just doesn't live up to.

Only knew Good Feelings for having it heard in HIMYM ! Was actually happy like this. The music itself as nothing bad in it but the voice is grating and get quite painful after a while 2.5

Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes I wish I could enjoy this album personally, but the way they sing and play the melodies throughout the album just turned it off for me. Really rough and out of place at times, while it does sound fun on the surface, it's just not appealing to listen to most of the time. There are some good songs here, but overall, this is decent. 1.- Blister In The Sun = 5/10 2.- Kiss Off = 5/10 3.- Please Do Not Go = 6/10 4 - Add It Up = 7/10 5.- Confessions = 7/10 6.- Prove My Love = 5/10 7.- Promise = 6/10 8.- To The Kill = 7/10 9.- Gone Daddy Gone = 5/10 10.- Good Feeling = 8/10 FINAL SCORE: 6.1/10

I just thought the album was pretty weird

the voice vibrato at the high tones throws me off.

some songs are fine but most of them are not my type at all

A bit too much of the garage band sound here - the vocals made me cringe at times - but the bass player is phenomenal

When this was released I'm sure it would've blown my mind, however in it's current context I didn't enjoy it much. It's pretty passable if you don't take notice of the lyrics.

Disappointing. I love Blister in the Sun. I figured there’d be more in the album. But it sounds like every song was something the Ramones could do better.

Huono albumi mut toinen albumi tält ihan ok

It's just Midwest emo before Midwest emo was a thing. That's the only thing that makes it impressive, is the fact that this was never done before this album. After everyone figured out how to terribly sing over terrible instrumentals, though, it became just the same as every other. I couldn't even tell when one song started and another ended. But ya know what? When I don't listen too closely and just jam the music, it's not too bad.

a couple of songs I really liked but I loathed gimme the car… eek

meh.I have a big distaste for punk, but it was intersting that it was mostly acoustic. Surprised I recognised two songs.

one good song

Some good songs

Man these vocals are not it. 2/5

Best: Ugly or Confessions (can't decide) Worst: Liked songs: 25%, 3/12 Light 2 I can definitely appreciate the influence the album had on the alt rock/punk scene, more so with the lyrics than the sound, because really the sound just isn't for me. I was really interested in the folk/punk label, but just didn't love it. The influence on my favorite genre of music and the lyrics are enough to bump it up to a 2 though.

Acoustic bass shred, pretty simple songs the whole album feels like it was recorded in an afternoon. Favourite song: Blister in the Sun

Started off alright but in the end i did not like. Dunno if its a banjo or what but it ended up being annoying

FAVO: Blisters in the sun, Gone Daddy Gone

Irrelevant.

I like alt rock but more upbeat like the 3 smiths and cure songs I know

Struggled a bit with this one… Opening track has a lot of promise then gets very forgettable. Prove My Love almost brings it back but that track is basically the first song re-hashed.

I enjoyed the first track the most to en the rest kind of felt like more of the same but not quite as catchy.

It's got quite a lot of Jonathan Richman and just like with his oeuvre I like the hits (Blister is great, as is Gone Daddy Gone) but the rest leaves me cold. The combination of overactive bass with the scratchy acoustic guitar and tinny drums just makes it sound like a couple of street corner buskers shouting to get the attention of passing tourists.

Started off good was enjoying it then it became a bit samey and and i felt lost its way was listening and then i seemed to drift away and not pay attention to the lyrics anymore.

The first song sucked. The other were.......... Fine. Dude's chronically off key.

2+ Stars (6/15)

Mostly annoying, with the occasional good bit (vocals terrible, occasional interesting guitar parts), just sounds cheap and trashy. Gone Daddy Gone is the only track I liked the whole way through. Largely just made me think about living in Australia for a year in 2000, where every, and I mean every, pub/bar band played ‘blister in the sun’. I only knew it as the ‘oi song’ then, and to this day I don’t understand why it was such a big deal there.

Saw these once and didn't get it. Think I got confused by the drummer standing up and just too alternative. Remember speaking to the bouncer for some reason and he enquired what is this shit.... he has a point. Extra star for Blister.

Ich finde ganz interessant, was sie ausprobieren, vor allem mit den Singstimmen, aber insgesamt ist das Album nicht so mein Fall.

Not my favorite, just because of the Vox

Blister in the sun is iconic and the rest of the album was largely post 70’s grungy rock but nowhere near what would come with the likes of nirvana. The two good songs kinda carry

It was some cool Music but it wasn’t my style. I didn’t like their out-of-tempo timing sometimes. I know they did it stylishly but AI have it the same Way with Bob Dylan. Eventhough, it was great Music not just my style

Not sure how this album made the list… I really tried to like it. Despite having a historical dislike 👎 for the first song, ‘blister in the sun’ It just feels very inconsistent. What I do love is the organic instrumental vibe and the excellent mixing that gives the instruments a live feeling and space and clarity. The lead guitarist and bass sound amazing. But the singing sometimes feels painful and whiny. Track 1: annoying full stop. Particularly the bit when it goes quiet and the annoying catchy back packer vibe. Track 2: excellent track Track 3: annoying singing and reggae rhythm Track 4: annoying ‘sexy’ lyrics Track 5: whiny 😫 annoying singing about being lonely Track 6: Really good song. Love the chorus and guitars. Less whiny 😫 Track 7: love the whole punk folk Track 8: well this song dragged… Track 9: Who let the child play the xylophone? Still a banger though! Track 10: a great closing track 2.5 🌟

shitty, expected more. very repetitive motives my head started hurting

Interessant aber zu alternativ und wild

Liked the acoustic punk energy. Reminded me a bit of Operation Ivy. Not going to rush back to listen again. Maybe will with Blister in the Sun. Was unaware it was these guys.

Pretty dire fare overall

Meh. Sounds like high school kids in the garage.

Was ok

Enjoyed it

Really did not like this. Vocals were weird, shouty, and off-key, and the instrumentals sounded like a high school band somehow got a recording contract and made an album of them jamming in their garage (which probably isn't far off from the truth).

Every track cannot be 'Blister In The Sun', unfortunately

one trick pony but the one trick is pretty darn good

Not really my type.

Don't really know what to make of this recording. Definitely a punk/new wave/indie flavourful. I can see this album appealing to some, but nothing in it for me.

A few good songs. I liked the guitar, but got repetitive. Vocals were annoying after a couple tracks. Couldn’t wait for the album to end.

**an ok album. I didn’t enjoy, but not a bad album

I didnt hate this one as much as the others, it was okay, 2/10. I like the background music

angsty teen boys who want sex

I hadn't heard of the group before, and the album wasn't my favorite. However, I did enjoy the tracks 'Add It Up' and 'Gimme the Car.' While I generally like noisy songs, the vibe of this album felt too chaotic for my taste, with the noise seeming out of rhythm. Overall, it didn't stand out as anything special to me.

started pretty strong but overall i found it a bit grating

I was just talking to a coworker of mine about how weird The Velvet Underground is and how I can't imagine why people consider them so influential. Then I put this shitshow on and totally got it.

I mean, who doesn't love Blister in the Sun? Wish the whole album were like that, but unfortunately it's not -- I guess I can see some proto-Mountain Goats here, but I just don't love when it seems like the lead singer of a band is bad on purpose.

Yes, the songs and music are OK. The singing, because of which I kept skipping the first few songs before giving up, isn't. 2/5

Not bad, but generally not my sound.

Blister In The Sun: I thought this was going to be chicks, this isn't a chick. This is a classic banger though, but this dude sounds a bit whiny. Maybe this is a chick, I have no idea, this whispering is weird but could be a chick. Song's okay, reminds me of the White Stripes. Kiss Off: Jesus, did they have their bass close enough to the mic when they recorded this? This turned into a bit of a surf pop jam, I can hear those bass strings struggling to stay intact. Dude's slappin' the bass like it's his wife after his 16th beer. Needs more electric guitar, but still kinda bangs tbh. Damn, that last strum broke the bass. Please Do Not Go: Bass. This song should have been in Napoleon Dynamite if it wasn't, gives that vibe. Honestly though, this isn't good music, I could sing like this guy, he sounds like me complaining about my job. This bass slaps my ass though, seems to be the theme here. The "bye bye bye bye" part is too much, and the whiny speech, cut that shit. Song's two times as long as it should be. Add It Up: Another song that makes me question the gender of the vocalist. Oh, boring start, but shits getting litty now. I feel like I'm on the dance floor with Elvis. A bit of a gross song though, "why can't I get just one screw?," "why can't I just get one fuck?". Okay chill, also why does it sound like all the instruments were recording on the rustiest old ass recording device imaginable? Song's pretty good but far too edgy for 1983, you can't say "fuck" in a song back then. Dude's horny as fuck, cringe alert. Remaster this shit, the instruments sound like shit. Confessions: Feel like I'm in the wild west, but also like I'm about to fall asleep. The bass slaps, as usual, the bassist is easily the most talented member of this band. I see why this song is the least listened to on the entire album. Maybe try writing your lyrics before recording your song. Reminds me of the Tragically Hip, and I hate that band. I went and got another beer and the song is still going, skip. Prove My Love: Diggin the more surf rock vibe this one has, I like the happy vibes. Much better than the rest of the songs. I could see this in a Tony Hawk games, shredding the coast, 720 Christ Air over the ice-cream stand at the beach. Promise: A lot of this is starting to sound the same. For some reason I thought it was going to be a chich vocalist this time, even though it hasn't been the other songs. This could be in Napoleon Dynamite, just hipster nonsense people who peaked in 2016 would love. Not a big fan of spoken word in songs, especially when he sounds like he's cumming while speaking. I've definitely heard this before in something, but its fucking awful, sound like me singing in the shower about my day. To The Kill: Start of this sounds like me at Walmart picking up the demo guitar in the toy section. This album is honestly kind of trash, who thought it should be one of the top 1001 albums of all time? Dude sounds like he wants to do be doing but singing in this band. This song sucks so much, are they high? Gone Daddy Gone: Okay, they've found the Ficsher Price xylophone while exploring the toy section, good start. This song is familiar, maybe in a Tony Hawk game? It's good, but again, what's with his voice, he sounds so tired. Is he talking to his own daddy? This xylophone solo makes up for any complaints I made previously, I feel like I'm playing Fossil Canyon in Diddy Kong Racing, bring me back! Good Feeling: More like Bad Feeling. Gotta end with a banger, not an instant-sleeper borefest. Shred all your most unique instruments to end the album. I'm not listening to the bonus track, they didn't prove worthy of it.

het deed me niet heel veel\

I love "Good Feeling", one of my favorite songs, and blister in the sun is obviously a hit, but overall this album is pretty meh outside of those songs for me

Surprised it is males and not females based on the group's name. I enjoyed the riff in the Fender's ad more than the music from this group!

I’m glad these guys found music to get all that anger out 🤣. Seriously, with all the teenage angst I’d be worried that they’d express themselves in less desirable ways. They do take the evergreen subject matter of being a nerdy dude with no game and unable to get laid, and bring some jams. “Blister in the Sun” was deservedly everywhere, it’s so dam catchy. It was practically an anthem in nearly every 80s teen movie I remember. Some really nice guitar work throughout (especially on “Prove My Love”). But the rest of the album doesn’t rise to those elevated heights of “Blister” for me, but I get why they’re considered a legendary band by many of my Gen-X brethren.

Would make a suitable support band at a mid sized venue. Theres humour and rudeness. And terrible dreary vocals.

First song is a classic catchy song but I couldn’t get into the rest of it. Not for me at all.

Some catchy parts. Some fun parts. But overall mostly shouty vocals and average production.

Mostly forgettable songs, although Good Feeling is okay. The lead vocalist sings about like I do, which is bad.

I like the sound but the lyrics are disgusting (to some songs)

Only blister in the sun is cult

it reminds me of the album where a bunch of teens are singing over sonic the hedgehog songs

Not my kids of music. Only listened to 2 tracks. Sorry

Never really liked the Femmes. Sounds like these guys didn't practice much or that's just the style? Everyone knows the 1st 2 tracks which are the really only decent ones. Maybe one more with a xylophone that's not too bad. I don't know the impact the Femnes had on music but must have been something to make the list...1.8.

Really bad proto-punk. Can hear a lot what would come in the genre here. Might have enjoyed it when I was 14 but no chance now. 1.5*

I read the global comments on this album, and made a TLDR as some of them are really on point: Acoustic punk, Mick Jagger impersonation, sometimes Mick Jagger impersonating Bob Dylan, for some reason not made in the ‘90s. I did not like it.

It's not bad - kind of rough and all over the place. The Xylophone doesn't fit in Gone Daddy Gone at all. Vocals are pretty repetitive, beats and guitar are very simple. This is done way better by other contemporary bands (e.g. Gang of Four, Feelies). Gets a 2 for Blister in the Sun and Prove My Love.

Música minimalista, mal tocada y mal cantada. Punk mal hecho. Tampoco me parece que los temas sean tan originales.

Didn’t love it

nulla di che, non sopporto la voce del cantante 5/10. non sono riuscito a finirlo proprio non la sopporto e mi annoiavano un po le canzoni

Don't really understand why these guys got so famous. Even their hit is annoying

The only knowledge I previously had about the Violent Femmes is that they were in Sabrina The Teenage Witch. I’ve now learned that they’re a pretty depressing sounding band, not really what I’m looking for to get me through the day.

There are a couple good songs on here like "Blister in the Sun" and "Gone Daddy Gone", but most of the rest of it isn't anything to write home about.

Honestly, way less interesting than i thought it was going to be. It's still good, just not close to a 5 or 4, okay, standard. its cooky, but at times its cooky for the sake of being cooky. dont know how often i'd come back to it after today. I think there are way more interesting albums from 83 than this

Had I heard this when I was seventeen, I think I would have loved it. Hearing it for the first time in my sixties, I can't say it does much for me. The singer is too intense at this distance. The band are really tight though and the song Good Feeling is almost touching.

I know lots of people (especially Gen-X'ers) consider this a classic. I never saw it as anything more than an OK album by a novelty band. I pretended to like it when I was in college so hipster girls would sleep with me. Ironically, that seems to be what a good portion of this album is about...the struggles of trying to get laid. Now we have apps on our phones for that, so we no longer need the Violent Femmes. Two and one-half stars. The added half-star is for the fumbling, ill-informed sex that happened thanks to this record.

That was a time😂🙃

Not for me. DNF.

When this popped up I thought to myself,I don't have bloody clue who this band is. So when I put it on I was pleasantly surprised to recognise the first song. They have got a very distinct sound, which I didn't love but didn't hate either. This album felt like a poor rollercoaster. There were ups and downs but I was glad when it was over. Will probably listen to blister in the sun again but non of the others

kiss off: interesting bass line or wtv instrument that is. lot of talky vocals. add it up: lowkey thought this was some dude being angry that he's a virgin. its not. confessions: instrumental breakdown sounds like a bunch of teenagers fucking around with the instruments. gimme the car: nearly thought the beginning riff was smells like teen spirit LMAO. it is not the same tho. - [ ] ehhhh so i did not like that. it was just boring to listen to. and no hate to violent femme fans but um. cool band name, i thought the music would actually sound like the name lmao 😭. like the dude's voice sounds the same in every song. he doesnt change it up at all its just the same kinda talky, annoying sound. not an album that really has a catchy sound yk. its very repetitive and like 3 songs in i wanted to stop listening to it. so there.

Retro and dated, and not in a good way

This album seemed to be written by a high school geek that could not talk to a girl. Underwhelming album

I did not care for most of the songs on this album. The whole album was very rough around the edges, the singing in particular I found to be mostly annoying. I was tired of the album around half way through it. It felt like there was a lot of potential but it didn’t work for me. I did enjoy the last song on the album though. 2.5

A little bubblegum for my liking. Definitely fits in it’s own microcosm of 80’s indie pop but man does this record drag for me

Violet Femmes more folk/country songs I enjoyed, but the rest not so much. Gotta go with 2/5.

Had a buddy learning bass guitar ruin Blister in the Sun for me. The rest of the album isn't too bad, just nothing much that stands out imo.

I definitely thought this Blister in the Sun riff was a Blink 182 song. And Gone Daddy Gone - I remember that from the Gnarls Barkley cover/sample... didn't expect that to turn up 9 tracks into this album. Weird one. I didn't really like it. 2.4/5

This comes to me as surfer rock, and I dont like it a lot. It is laid back, but not too musical.

This is a bit rubbish.

First thought this was from the 90s or 00s, but then saw it was from 83. So i can se that this has had an influence or was ahead of its time. Did i like it.. meh. Gone daddys gone was alright but this album was not really for me.

Blister In the Sun is a bop and then it gets progressively annoying from there I fear
