Reviews (page 11 of 14)
I enjoyed this album for the most part. It was a little too long for me but I enjoyed most of the tracks on here. First track was my favorite on this album
this album is very middle school boy core, a lot of ADHD vibes from this.
You have to like it. Some happy songs, some sad songs and an interesting voice.
The only Violent Femmes song I've heard is "Blister in the Sun," which I really don't care for, so I had very low expectations for this album. I always hear people speak very positively about this album and the band, and after listening to this album, I definitely have a greater appreciation for the Violent Femmes' music. I don't think I've listened to much punk music from the eighties, but I enjoyed this stripped down sound. The guitar playing, bass playing, and drumming were all pretty simple, but they were all executed well. The lyrics were a tad... on the horny side, but they fit the vocals really well. There was almost a rockabilly or surf rock feel to a lot of the music on this album, especially on "Gone Daddy Gone," with its jangly xylophone sound. I won't be revisiting this album or the Violent Femmes any time soon, but I can appreciate this album's legacy.
Raw, jangly and good energy though kind of dark. I dig how the bass is forward in the mix. This isn't really my kind of thing but I liked it more than I thought I would and get the feeling that this would grow on me with a few more listens.
Add it up e confessions !!!
Not really my vibe but the voice wears surprisingly well, something Husker Du and Billy Bragg and others could learn from, and should have. This album is as old as me and has aged nearly as well. Blister in the Sun sounded fresh when I was fifteen and still makes me smile. Add it Up, et al. Hard not to like!
Kitschy and catchy. A little Velvet Underground, a little Flight of the Conchords. About 95% of the Violent Femmes music I’ve heard has been at weddings, dive bar jukeboxes and in the form of covers at dueling piano bars and mediocre suburban live music nights. Will not be a go-to for me but there’s definitely a time and a place for these tunes.
Not my taste, kind of repetitive
Blister In The Sun - 8/10 Kiss Off - 7/10 Please Do Not Go - 7.5/10 Add It Up - 7.5/10 Confessions - 8/10 Prove My Love - 8/10 Promise - 7/10 To the Kill - 8/10 Gone Daddy Gone - 7/10 Good Feeling - 7/10 TOTAL - 75/100
Was okay. Sounded nice. The lyrics seemed like whiny incel shit
First track was super popular; the rest had horrid singing and didn't really care for it, though I can hear how some '00s rock was rooted in this stuff. 6/10.
Wasn’t impressed the first time I listened but I liked it on this relisten. The acoustic guitar and bass tones are great and it’s a fun quick play through
Jangly proto alternative rock. I fucked with it, not my favorite though
The lyrics are good the melody and sound is a bit repetitive
Fun album, questionable morality in todays terms :-)
Indie ? weird folk? eran los 80 y estos iban en dirección contraria. Creo que son mejores por las mentes que abrieron que por su música en sí mismo. Blister in the Sun es una declaración de principios brutal.
Not a huge fan. “Folk Punk” didn’t age well, in my opinion. Maybe I’m just not the target audience… but I like folk and I love punk…
I liked Blister in the Sun but by the end of the album, it was starting to grate and I'm OK not hearing it again.
Muzikaal folk/country-rock, vaak de zang iets te vervelend aanwezig, maar sterk begin (blisters in the sun) en einde van het album (vanaf gone daddy gone). Gone daddy gone +++
The album grew on me, liked the music, vocalist took some getting used too
Raro, copado, creativo
Never actively listened to or known the band but blistered in the sun and gone daddy gone absolute classics. Can appreciate the rest but not for me
Definitly has some fun parts. Gone Daddy Gone is a cool throwback to the Gnarls Barkley cover.
It's a bit B tier but you can't deny is likeable enough. There is just better bands out there in this genre
Favorite track was Gone Daddy Gone
Good
Not in the mood for this rn, will try when my nerves are better
A better one, atleast for British standards I guess
Didn't love it, didn't hate it. I can understand why people get excited about the album but I found it pretty meh. Also, Gary's voice is annoying, though as a teen I didn't mind it.
Ok rock, soft punk rock, it is not a french group :). 2,75
meh
downloaded 2,4,6,7,10. not music i’d maybe return to heavily but enjoyed the angst most definitely
Fun one. This was a blast from the past.
Dad used to play "Blister In The Sun" and "Gone Daddy Gone", had no idea these were from here until I listened to this. Didn't really care for the rest of the songs, though. I like the guitar.
3. dude's voice gets old fast
Interesting to hear songs that weren't Blister in the Sun. It's one of those angsty ones I might choose to go back to in the future but nothing I would say is noteworthy enough for me
Good first track. Must admit I switched off while it was on in the background, but my ears priced up when Ugly came on and it was worth a second listen. Overall, a solid 5/10.
Great opener a indie disco classic which was the highlight for me
One hit wonder
declamatory — archaic — vulnerable PROVE MY LOVE ADD IT UP PROMISE UGLY GIMME THE CAR
Definitely influenced modern shoegazey folky music. Some raw instrumentals, interesting vocal decisions that make it feel risky but also a bit dated. Feels like teenage angst, a horse throat, walking with your hood up. Very horny, needs to touch grass. Stand outs: Blister in the Sun, Marimbas on Gone Daddy Gone, Good Feeling
I liked the top of the album and like the sound of it. His voice isn’t the best but the vibe is there
Blister in the sun is catchy but idk about the others yet. It's exactly what I thought it would be. I wouldnt listen by choice but it didnt suck either
Some jarring aesthetics in a fun package. I really liked the more upbeat and catchy songs, because they were the only ones that masked the aggressive singing and hollow sounding instruments
Decent sound but quite samey
off to a good start w Blister in the Sun. love the lead singer's voice on this track Sounds a lot like the nerdy-punk I liked in high school.. likely this was a big influence ok level of NSFW took a big leap in "Add it up" track 5 started to lose steam a bit.. sounds are blending Gone Daddy Gone picked back up.. had to look up who covered this and realized I probably know most of the lyrics from the Gnarls Barkley version
Che meraviglia. Come ho fatto a vivere senza questo album fino ad ora.
Great start, promising middle, grating finish.
Not my cup of tea but I'm glad I listened to it.
No sabía que Gone Daddy Gone venía en este disco. Y por supuesto que Blister in the Sun es un temazo. El resto no me atrapó.
Never heard this before and folk-punk sounded interesting. However, I soon realised that this was an American band and Americans really don't just get punk in the slightest for some reason. It didn't ruin the album for me, but for me "folk-punk" resolves to low-fi/ acoustic alt-rock. If I had to think of similar artists then I would probably look to the Pixies. I found this difficult to rate. Musically it wasn't anything special, but I did find the lyrics and performances amusing.
Appreciate its uniqueness but can’t say I really enjoyed any song
Ok but not my cup of tea
Not bad. Not great. Some decent tracks though
I got this album when I was about 11 and it was unlike anything I'd heard and I loved it. I haven't listened to it in probably 30 years and it doesn't really hold up, but my nostalgia says it gets a 3.
I sorta liked this. Vocals can be a little distracting but that’s ok.
Definitely a few good singles in here, but I feel like the back half of the album kinda all washed together unmemorably.
Picked up in the second half and of course the classic song at the start. Some catch choons.
This was interesting, I can't say I ever really heard acoustic folk punk before, but that's exactly what this Femmes record was. It's very rough, gritty, but tight in its presentation and really the entire album felt like chasing after a girl only for her to end up breaking your heart. It's certainty an album I can see a lot of younger people identifying with, as it's something just about everybody goes through at some point.
Cool
Lots of style and charm, some fun percussion and textured guitars, and seems like it would have been a fairly fresh sounds for the time of its release. Probably sits somewhere in the middle for me - wasn’t something I connected to heaps but still pretty decent. Fave track: Kiss Off
Groovy but not super favourite
disappointed by the absence of actual femmes in this group. false advertising. i liked add it up and kiss off, and of course blister in the sun but i think everyone on the planet likes that song i think that’s kind of their one hit wonder gone daddy gone was good too. i just think it’s so annoying when these groups do pretty solid records and then there’s a track or several that’s just like “oh and also ain’t nothin sexier than an underage girl (:” [im looking at *you* mick jagger] stunningly nineties sound for a record written in [checks notes] 83??????
Eventough I am not a big fan of the bluesy riffs, there is something here. Some striking lyrics and melodies. The energy is also great.
VIOLENTO DEMAIS
Quite modern yet also quite 60s. Liked the first song on the album most, but probably because I knew it.
Sometimes it was just noise, but I didnt hate it.
Yea, pretty nice
Felt kind of immature to me, I don't really know why it struck me that way but I just didn't love the vibe.
a perfectly fine album for british guy's 1001 albums he personally loves list. 3.5 Gimme the car(no give me the car)
🔥
It’s cool. The two hits are where it’s at. Some of experimental ‘noise’ and purposely wrong note sections get tiring pretty quick.
Kinda feels like these guys walked so the Pixies could run.
The little ugly duckling
Lots of recognizable songs here. I like many of them. This record is anxiety inducing in a big way and I can't pinpoint why. It's heavy sounding but acoustic and electric with little to no distortion? The constant strumming? I just don't know.
Chouette petit album punk rock acoustique, mais sans plus. Par contre le solo de xylophone claque sa mère
Enjoyed it
I feel like better musicians and vocalists could have taken these songs and made them better. Not bad at its core.
2.5
Recognized "Blister in the Sun". Kinda jangly rock, felt like a bit of punk influence
Not big on the lyrical style, some fun ones but not for me
Full disclosure, the Violent Femmes were SO OVERPLAYED on the radio when I was a teenager and young adult, I got incredibly sick of them and would never voluntarily listen to this album. It did not age well for me. But listening to this, I was reminded how new and fresh this sound was when the album first came out. These guys paved the way for indie rock, for sure. I still don't plan to listen to this again, like, ever if I can help it, but I will acknowledge the influence they had on music. 3.5/5 in acknowledgement of the impact, rounded down to 3 due to tiredness factor.
Very good debut album. Im not the biggest fan of the Violent Femmes but I can understand why people in the alternative music scene love them.
Highlights: "Blister in the Sun," "Prove My Love," "Kiss Off," "To the Kill" Legitimately shocking that this came out in 1983, and that the vocal performances contain the entire bag of tricks seemingly directly copied by Frank Black, who would go on to be cited as one of the most influential artists of 90s rock. Still, Pixies did have their own contributions and ultimately made better songs and albums, in part because -- believe it or not -- their lyrics tended to be less scandalous. If you were put off by the lyrical content of Violent Femmes' hit single about pervert junkies, don't worry: almost the entire album spends its time dancing around the promotion of sexual assault! I mean, holy hell. Still, incredibly prescient and a clear link from Velvet Underground and Captain Beefheart to grunge and alt.
Definitely ahead of its time, pretty samey in the first half but nice changes in the second.
Very cool. I never gave them much thought past Blister in the sun.
Violent Femmes is the debut album by the American folk punk band Violent Femmes. Although never charting until 1991 when it was certified platinum, this album is certified platinum in the US, and is the band's best-selling record. This is an interesting early alternative rock album, as the band used minimalism to emphasize its acoustic bass riffing and a sense of urgency with their mixed-in punk rock style. This was a great cult classic album. It sounded underground while also being good enough to be on mainstream radio. I swear I've heard some of these songs before or at least the beats from them, but don't remember when. This is an awesome album for rock or punk fans, and a must-listen for anyone interested in music from the 80's.
Stand out track - blister in the sun
Incel anthems described as teenage angst, good music, bad vibes
3.5/5 Best: Blister In the Sun Worst: To The Kill
Album was decent, but I had higher expectations coming in. Favorite track: Gone Daddy Gone
Blister in the sun is an iconic tune with a pavilion toe tapping quality. The album over all is fairly solid, I prefer the more upbeat songs. The album wouldn't be a regular repeat for me, but I appreciate it.
Very punky- can feel repetitive as an album but overall good and at time funny.
Such an odd listen. Definitely like it. They were a band more than Blister In The Sun for sure.
I can hear some indie roots from this album
Eh
Quite nice folk music
elsker første sangen, andre sangen er litt spess 3.6
Abbastanza carino, non credo che lo riascolterò
Enjoyed it
Folk. Punk. Somehow not a train wreck of a combination. It’s good, but not really my type.
Folk rock and punk fusion very nice
det här är ett sånt där album som lämnar en positiv känsla men som inte riktigt är tillräckligt bra för att nå upp till dom högre betygen.
It should be a 4 but I don’t see myself going back to this regularly. That makes 3.5 = 3
Of its time but a good listen and will give it another go.
Started off strong with blister in the sun. Great first song! Overall, it was fine.
I’ve heard this before. It’s aight, kinda fun. Blister in the son is pretty easy to play on guitar!!
Blister in The Sun, Add it up, Gone Daddy Gone all very good tracks. Group has fun bass - vocals are sometimes really cool and sometimes boring drivel.
3/5 or 7/10 Great listen first time through. Loved how they made acoustic music sound quite punk like. Vocals a bit prepubescent at times. Blister in the Sun = A masterpiece song
Good album
very repetitive and flat almost monotone melody. Not my vibe
i fine but i’ve heard it too much
Hated the first several songs. Second half had some cool sounds, especially on bass. Still don’t love the singers voice, but you know, les claypool was a not great either. Idk felt a little too chaotic in some parts but overall a great composition.
I've never really gotten the fuss about this album, apart from Blister in the Sun. I understand that it's an important early alternative album and would influence many bands in the years following. In retrospect though, it's a bit immature and boring in places.
This was not what I was expecting but it was good anyway, I don't know what I was expecting really
I only knew 'Blister in the Sun' before this, so I expected more of that - the rest of the album is more folk punk than I expected. An interesting listen, my top pick is 'Kiss Off' - I liked the bass work and energy.
really enjoy this, surprised at how solid and consistent this album is. kind of assumed this band was a one hit wonder. seems like prototypical 80s college playing hackey sack out on the quad rock.
I liked it. Didn’t particularly love it. Could possibly benefit from some more listens. I don’t know if I’ve ever listened to a fully acoustic punk band so the sound was very interesting to me.
I always kind of liked the Violent Femmes when listening to them at arms length - some memorable tunes, and lovely sound - but looking closely the songs are rather hollow. It's too snotty to be twee and it's too twee to be punk, and having their famous opener being pretty much an anthem for onanism, it gets old at one point or another.
Very plucking sound but good still.
Odd bird with good pipes
6/10 okay but not as good as I had hoped
5/10. "Oh wow, Blister in the Sun is such a great song, that must mean the album it's on is good too, right?"
Would make for a really tight 20ish minute album but ends up a little eclectic and annoying even over the original <40 minute length. Couple good songs. 6/10
Okayish.
Every ten years I listen to this album and think 'its good, but not quite good enough to actually buy'. I still think that.
Surprised to see this album came out in 1983; it sounds like a 90s album to me. I'd never listened to Violent Femmes before, except for Blister in the Sun. This isn't a style I typically listen to but I found it likeable for its unusually upbeat rawness. If there were half stars, I’d give this 3.5.
Konstigt nog känns denna väldigt fräsch! Som platta, njaaa… men många bra låtar!
Quite a few old favs from this album. Blister in the sun, gone daddy gone and kiss off! What a fun album, i will be revisiting this one.
wasn't bad, Starts off strong and peters off
Yllättäen tykkäsin aika lailla koko levystä! Omalla tavallaan pirteä. Vähän indiee. Esteettinen jotenkin. Blister on the sun toki hitti, tanssittaakin vähän. Mut iso osa biiseistä unohtuu nopeasti.
High 3, good and fun
Okay musically but lyrically not so much. Opener obviously heard before. Think I'm just listening to it at the wrong time. I can hear how they have influenced some bands but don't think it's aged particularly well.
It was ok, not really my favourite style of punk - I’m a fan of post punk and goth punk type stuff from the 80s but this isn’t the one for me. Maybe it will grow with repeated listens, but sometimes the style is reminiscent of a paler version of Chuck Mosley era Faith No More or Iggy Pop. It’s clear to see the influences in this album and that have come from this album/band but it just doesn’t ‘float my boat’ Will probs listen again, but it’s never going to be on top ten rotation
Cool acoustic punk. I'm surprised this is from 83. Blister in the sun Add it up
Listened to last week 3.5/5 Favorite song: blister in the sun It’s impossible to not bop your head to this album’s first song and then it takes an aggressive turn where only half the songs are enjoyable
This album almost feels like the inspiration for most midwest emo music today. Best song is definitely Blister in the Sun.
Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed this!
Sounds ALOT fresher than 1983. Really enjoyed it.
Not a bad album. Confessions was the most interesting to me. The style is interesting in one or two song bursts but gets a little stale over a full album.
Surprisingly chill, surprisingly good.
One hit. One.
This sounded like proper early 80's indie. I remember seeing the album on display in Selectadisc but opted for Simple Minds instead. Oh dear. Budgets were an issue back in the day, as well as musical appreciation. What I like about this record is that there is no formula, no attempt to sell the 'product', no masterplan. Just the music. The vocal delivery gets a little silly. The album also tailed off with dark thoughts after a breezy start. I might just buy a £4 copy on CD.
A recognize the lead track, it's catch, along with a few others, but nothing is really grabbing my interest.
Solid VU/Modern Lovers-ish alt rock. If you were alive in the 90’s, you’ve heard at least one of these songs before. Would probably make a good summer cookout record with your punk-ish friends. RIYL: Not cleaning your room, microwaved Taquitos, Mountain Dew.
I've heard a few songs before such as 'Blister In The Sun', but overall its not a very memorable album for me personally.
As far as best opening tracks of a debut album go, “Blister in the Sun” has to be up there. What a great way to introduce yourself as a band! But the rest of the album doesn’t quite live up to it. I found myself looking up how old they were when they recorded this. (The answer is they were in their 20’s — and the lead singer was only 19 — which feels right.) There’s a certain first album charm to their immaturity and goofiness. But there’s a limit to how far that takes me. Maybe I’m getting older or maybe I’m just 100+ albums into this list. 😅🤷🏻♂️ “Promise” opens with a grungy Nirvana-esque riff, which makes me wonder if this album was more influential than I’m giving it credit for. The album feels like a bridge between the experimental rock of The Velvet Underground and the alternative rock of the 80’s and 90’s. And man, I can’t believe this is the original version of “Gone Daddy Gone”! I know it from Gnarls Barkley. What a great song! Also, the last song, “Good Feeling,” is lovely. There are some gems on this album. Excellent album cover too. One of the best we’ve had on this list so far.
Was kind of interesting. To the kill gave me psychedelic feels. -confessions was probably my least fav song on the album
let me go aw-aw-on
Had some classics I didn’t know they sang. Other than that, wasn’t terribly interested.
Quirky
Decent music that you can use for television shows. It's not particularly striking, it is actually rather bland (in my opinion). Not an album I would pay to listen to.
A nice early alternative album. Blister in the sun is a classic alternative song. The rest of the album is similar in style but not as catchy. For this being made in the 80s it shows the femmes we’re ahead of their time. This album is pretty solid but I wont revisit more than the first song. 5.7/10
VF. The sound is very distinctive (especially for the 80s) lots of dry acoustic guitar and bass with a skiffle drum. but I find it all a bit unlovable. The singer sounds a bit smug and the punk-folk thing doesn't do anything for me. Its workmanlike...3
Two or three songs of note but a lot of the same sound throughout. Blister in the Sun is obviously a classic and reminds me of “Two Guys, A Girl, and A Pizza Place”.
So, I liked this, but a lot of the songs sounded kind of the same. I feel like this is a 3, but I have yesterday's album a 3 which I liked a lot less, so I'm a little torn.
Gostei do álbum apesar de não ser o meu estilo preferencial. Algumas letras da música são um pouco suspeitas e creepy. 3/5
1. Everyone knows blister in the sun. Never listened on headphones but the bass is the best part of the song and I never realized 2. Still not a fan of the vocal style, but the bass is still MVP 3. Ehh...vocals got annoying 4. Rolling stones feel. Best vocals on the album so far. Wait, there's a guitar in this band? Most rock-ish song so far. 5. Rough attempt at blues - too long. The ending is...no 6. Bass MVP still 7. Vocals back to annoying, bass keeping it going 8. Guitar playing rhythm and bass soloing? Trying jazz now? Not great. Painful guitar solo 9. Xylophone and bass are great, vocals still meh. Xylophone solo ftw 10. Alright ballad, a bit flat
Blister in the Sun is a classic. Used to love Kiss Off as well, but never really dove further into the album past that. The album has such a casual feel that makes me feel like I'm watching someone play this on their front lawn for a crowd of 12. The singing is so perfectly flawed. The energy is raw and sarcastic. Not my favorite in any sense, but certainly fun to come back to.
meia boca, pra ruim nao serve mas nao empolga muito
Interesting but not my thing
Super interesting combination of punk with folk influences. Great guitar sound. I did not know the band. I liked this album.
Ambivalence for me on this one. Funny voice and no massive impression. Disappointing as I liked the band name and then it was just some dudes
Not bad
Really enjoyed this. Some tracks very reminiscent of Talking Heads.
This album is quite basic, a fairly well-executed three-piece band of acoustic guitar and bass, with drums. The strings are not so tightly wound, one can hear the players move up and down the fret board, the strings vibrate from strong picking. "Blister in the Sun" being their ultimate hit on this album, it is the song that everyone has heard and can hum the melody without much dip into memory, but the chances are likely that one never knew it was by the Violent Femmes. The sound on this album, released in 1983, is reminiscent of the 50s-60s a la The Monkees, but this also seems to contain a little bit of that punk attitude with aggressive sounding vocals, aggressive instrumentations, etc. Distortion on the guitar is first noticed by "Add It Up" but it is a bit of an afterthought as the freneticism of the song makes mental callbacks to the 'bird' being the word.
Was okay, not too spectacular
I like gone daddy gone
Vekkuli
Apart from Blister in the Sun it's nothing extraordinary or special. Some solid rocking but nothing very memorable.
Just offbeat enough to be interesting. Just weird enough to ask myself, “what the heck is this?”
25th April 2022 Listened while working in the front room, first day back at work. Chilled in the evening. Enjoyed the jarring, jangling, indie angst which I think was offset effectively against the upbeat music. Blister in the sun is a classic.
It took a minute for me to get into it, but I ended up enjoying the mix of punk and folk that characterizes this music. The lyrics were a bit hit or miss. I’m really not a fan of the self loathing/self pitying man singing about women not wanting to be with him while sounding like an entitled creep the whole time.
Yes alright, this is a good album.
Not a lot of variety, but a fun album none the less.
Was quite looking forward to this but disappointed. Beyond Blister in the Sun there wasn't really anything to get my teeth into. A low 3 would probably be a 2 on another day.
"I remember looking into that building, and they kept telling me there were animals in there, and I was pissed off ... I didn't know why they were making me look in this building. I had no idea there were photographers there. I was ... pissed off that I couldn't see the animals and I was all cranky by the end of it." Me too
Oh hey I recognize the first song! Never knew who sang it though. 2nd song is pretty catchy too. So far so good. One of the first punk albums maybe? I like the sound and vibe of the different songs.
I felt like this was the start of a punk movement, but then I saw when it came out so now not sure. Its enjoyable enough but doubt I'll listen again
03/20/2022 Weird, loud, angsty pop/punk. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would!
Fun but inconsistent. Songs vary from entertaining (Prove My Love, Gone Daddy Done) to aggravating (Confessions, To the Kill). Didn't add since it's unlikely I'll ever give it another shot.
02/03/21 - 3.5/5 Interesting vocals Happy Vibes
"I take one, one, one cause you left me, And two, two, two for my family, And three, three, three for my heartache, And four, four, four for my headaches, And five, five, five for my lonely, And six, six, six for my sorrow, And seven, seven for no tomorrow, And eight, eight, I forget was eight was for, But nine, nine, nine for the lost gods, Ten, ten, ten, ten for everything, everything, everything..." (Kiss off)
De va squams
listened to before not my absolute favorite
Not at all what I expected, but not in a good way. Nothing memorable or catchy here, after the first track, and nothing especially bad either. The definition of mediocre.
I love how unique and jittery their sound it
3,5
3.5/5 Fun album that gets a bit manic at times. I’ve known “Blister In The Sun” for years but never listened to the rest of the album, I’m happy I have now though. Like many others have commented, this sounds ahead of it’s time for an album released in 1983, with many songs that had been written by a kid in high school on top of that. They manage to pull off sounding rough and disorderly without completely losing the tune or going too over the top. Fav Tracks: Blister In The Sun, Kiss Off, Add It Up, Gone Daddy Gone Least Fav Track: Please Do Not Go
Fun listen, i was surprised when I knew the first song, and i also particularly liked “Kiss Off, “Add it Up”, and “Confessions”. This album was definitely ahead of its time, capturing a 90s sound as early as 1983.
Geeks playing rock n roll… in a refreshing way. Sound is like college rock melets Velvet Underground
Solid collection of indie folk songs. Proof that you don’t need much to make catchy and compelling music. Definitely falls off a bit towards the end though. Favorite Tracks: “Blister In The Sun”, “Kiss Off”, “Please Do Not Go”, “Add It Up”, “Promise”
Nice attitude, unique lyrics, ok range
The singer has a bit of a reedy voice but otherwise I really enjoyed this album.
A few curious tracks, but generally quite standard. Good soundtrack while doing something else
Простенько, но со вкусом.
wh
Good but tails off towards the end. Starts off a bit like modern indie which was a pleasant surprise.
I've never liked folk punk and this album didn't change my mind. Some of the lyrics caught my attention (in a good way), but musically it just fades into the background most of the time. There were some fun moments, but it just doesn't do much for me.
Weird, neurotic,
Быстро заскучал и переключил на This is Violet Femmes. Сойдёт
2.5 stars. Not bad but maybe not something I’d listen to
Better than I thought it would be. I always found "Blister in the Sun" annoying, but some of the other songs were good. Still, I don't really enjoy this band much.
Recognised a few songs from films. Not my usual thing but a decent listen
Only knew one song, but good, definitely worth another listen. Felt like a precursor to 90s grunge stuff
Really enjoyed this - great bass sound and lots to like here
Really like 'Blister in the sun', and I found myself head bopping to a few more tracks.
Really enjoyed this - great bass sound and lots to like here
Reasonably entertaining American punk, although Gano's voice becomes grating after a few tracks.
Cheeky, pedantic, folksier than I expected.
Not as good as I was expecting
Better than I remember
nice true relatable lofi gets a bit tiring after a while
Good album, has some classics
interesting album with some known songs
A few great moments on this, especially Blister... but I found a lot of it a bit samey for me. I should like this more...but not today.
Surprisingly enjoyed tho lyrics bit grating at times
underwhelmed
I like how often during this project I discover songs that I already knew but had no idea who they belonged to. Favourite track: gone daddy gone
wait... Blister in the sun came out in 1983!!!???? WTF???? Interesting album overall after getting over the intial shock of how old it was. Some of the songs were a bit grating to listen to. I generallty liked it though.
Good alternative Album. I liked it.
pro: echt zeitlos und ein paar smash hits contra: teilweise echt weird
Pretty good. 3.2?
Creepy vibes
Much better from what I remember seeing them at 2014 Falls but still so so. Kind of funny kind of creepy double entendre filled lyrics is weird
The best way to describe Violent Femmes eponymous record is that its the result of taking Weezer's Pinkerton, and making it for 8th graders. As I am not in the 8th grade anymore, I would much rather listen to Pinkerton to get some enjoyment out of bouts of frustration and memories of teenage angst. My enjoyment from this record is similar to what I get from Jonathan Richman. The patheticand desperate lyrics are extremely comedic to me, and I love the fact that it does not try very hard to get its message across; it feels honest and somewhat nostalgic to me. 3/5.
I like their sound a lot but their songwriting less. Worth a listen if just because they are so unique (and for the couple great tracks)
Indie mais animado, e mostrou onde Gone Daddy Gone.
enjoyed this more than i thought i would considering the type of music. love how blunt the lyrics are
It was an enjoyable listen but the only songs that grabbed my attention were the ones I already knew.
Ahead of their time, though I don't love the singers voice.
great album, catchy and fun. sounds like it can get better with another listen
Couple of catchy and fun songs
Played some of these songs live with my band Menage for Asheville Terpsicorps. Holiday from the Goodies sang lead for us. Great tunes on this album. Great start to my list.
An good listen overall, Violent Femmes have been on my list to listen to for a while, but before this I thought they had a bit more of a harder rock edge to them. Random aside, not sure if there's a connection but the part in Gone Daddy Gone (the na na na na bit) sounds like the "Hippogriff" song featured in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie. Best: Blister in the Sun; To the Kill Worst: Please Do Not Go; Good Feeling
-I like the bass/ acoustic guitar riffs in "Blister In The Sun" and "Please Do Not Go" -I think the fat bass is really saving this -It just really didn't have anything interesting other than the bass
It’s a testament and a compliment to the Violent Femmes that their debut remains sonically and lyrically both out of and ahead of its time. It’s a record that will always sound current due to its universal themes of teenage angst and insecurity and the catchy singalong nature of the songs. I’m well and truly no longer the target market for this album, but my 17-year-old self would’ve really loved this.
I KNOW THE FIRST SONG WHAT. Ok now that I've heard the whole album, it was fun to listed to. I didn't like all the messages the songs were putting out, but the sound is good. Rating it a 3 since there was some things to not like.
meh
Tinha certeza que Blister in the Sun era do Weezer.
good early punk rock!
Every songs pretty similar to me, its at least a good sign but its so hard when the songs all compare so close to one another and really just get worse as the album goes on
some duffers but love the sound.
This album has some pretty sick tunes on it but there's something about that acoustic bass that simultaneously sounds really cool and makes all the songs sound the same
3.2 + Tagged along with a few buddies back in high school to see these guys play. It was a fun show and I was impressed by Brian Ritchie’s fat bass licks. But listening again many years later, I’m not loving this record. I appreciate that they give voice to the loneliness and sexual frustration that many young men endure, but, thankfully, most of us are able to grow past all this. I no longer enjoy dwelling in this dank, musky headspace of sad teenage jerk off fantasies. Also, it’s off-putting to hear a grown man sing lustily about underage girls with lines like: “Beautiful girl, lovely dress / High school smiles, oh yes.”
Pop-rock sin estridencias. Aire melacólico
Blister In The Sun! Great bass work on the album and is really a treat to listen to. Excellent sonic balance. Ugly is a great, loud, and loose track.
It seems like so far all the albums except the first one follow the same style wish. This one, is more rock, the singer's high pitched voice sometimes reminded me of the Pixies, who I love. I liked it overall, so I'll give them 3 stars once more.
Just three guys on acoustic instruments playing their hearts out and it shows. Classic organic lo-fi punk with some great hooks, eg Add it up, Blister in the Sun and Go daddy go.
Rock suave. Un poco punk.
excelent
Album sounds very ahead of it’s time - I’m shocked it’s from ‘83. The instrumentation and lyrics feel very 90’s sadness. A clear inspiration for some of those bands and emo groups. The lyrics specifically don’t seem to have aged well. I’m guessing it was an early example of male sadness and rage this way, but listening almost 40 years later, the emotional manipulation, entitlement, and degradation of women who don’t like the singer feel outdated and cringeworthy. Early sadbois
An alternative folk classic. A couple strong songs, but the rest kinda falls behind.
This was okay.
Mix between Velvet Underground and the Pixies
Their best album

Some known tracks in there, overall didn't like it that much.
Decent music all in all but not something I would listen on the regular ... not quite my tempo?
Fav Song: Blister in the Sun
One of my favorites!
Some good tunes. Explicit lyrics made the experience a bit less good than it would have otherwise been.
do połowy przesłuchane całkiem git może kiedyś wróce po reszte, troche za bardzo basic jak dla mnie
Like but don't love. Some great songs.
Fun record that sounds like it was mostly written by somebody in high school (because it was). Skip to any given section of any given song, and it sounds really similar to the last thing you were listening to, just with more or less xylophone. Best track: Blister in the Sun
Definitely an interesting sound for the 90s. There’s some legit bangers on here
3.5
Not in love with the themes, but I could have just not been listening intently enough. A couple of the top hits had me dancing.
215. ok
I am semi familiar with Blister in the Sun, but that’s it. This album was bleh otherwise lox
Juu ei oo mulle.
Ninguna femme en el grupo, violencia relativa, un par de canciones buenas.
0s: Album looks like country 10s: Album sounds like country 20s: oh no, it's post-punk with horrible singing 30m: oh there's some actual good singing and song writing 45m: this was good! let's listen to this again 60m: it's so whiny and full of self pity! I cannot stand any more minute
day 7 — Violent Femmes — Violent Femmes (1983) genre: folk punk runtime: 44 min rating: 1.5/5 (dnf) fav track: thoughts: dnf 😭 i got through about half of it and just wasn’t enjoying it, so i skimmed through the rest and nothing rlly clicked but i added a .5 cuz this album sounds pretty modern despite being from the 80s 🤔 just not my vibe
Prediction: Si toutes les chansons sont dans le style de la première (qui est la plus écoutée sur Spotify) c'est 2 Impression d'écouter une version cheap de jack white avec la voix de lou reed en moins bien Meh 2 ou 3 je verrai demain
I don't know. I don't believe that I heard of them before. Some folk/post punk band. Nothing really outstanding.
Not really for me
2.5
achei... exótico
"Gone Daddy Gone" is alright. The rest not so much.
I like this more in theory than I do in reality. I love Gone, Daddy Gone and the closing track. I also dig what they do with acoustic instruments. But I find some of the lyrics and his voice to be grating.
Each song has such a similar vibe that I didn't realize I was done with the album. Makes for a kinda boring listening sesh IMO.
i feel like the people that would like this band are really pretentious. sounds like modern midwest emo but a lil more annoying
1,7/5
Ma ütleks, et see album on suhteliselt mid. Tegu on muusikaga, mida minusugune inimene kirjeldaks klassikana. See on selline muusika, mida kellegi isa elutoas taustamüraks laseb. Lauludest pani mind kuulama vaid üks, "Confessions". Ma olin nii pettunud avastades, et bändis nimega violent femmes, pole ühtegi naist, mida skämmi. Maailm vajab rohkem naisvokaale rokkmuusikas.
Didn’t love this one. I don’t love the lead singers vocals, and a lot of the background instrumentals are a little too experimental for my taste. My fav songs were prove my love, add it up, and ugly. I don’t think I could see myself listening to this again though.
es lässt sich gut anhören
2,5
Something compelling about this but I'm not sure what. Goofy and not taking itself too seriously, which I always welcome. Definitely wouldn't have chosen to listen to it based on verbal description, but I'm not upset that I did. I'd put it at 2.5.
Pas mon truc
OK. 2/5
Not terrible, I know they were really innovative when this album came out. "Blister In The Sun" is of course super popular and easily recognized due to its pop culture significance. I'm just not a big fan of this type of singing, it just seems bad. Maybe he is being uniquely bad or something like that. This isn't an album that I would listen to again, it's just not for me.
The melodies and lyrics aren’t bad, but I don’t like the singers voice too much 🙃
Idk how I feel about this one it's interesting fs but also like I don't think I'd reach for it but I wouldn't be too mad if it came on but I'd also probably skip I think
Good album.
