I hate Lou Reed
Wasn't a fan of this though did know more than i thought

Started off fine but then how can anybody listen to this for 45 mins is beyond me.
I can see why the blank teens in Sabrina the Teenage Witch liked this band.
The only song on this album I knew coming in is Blister in the Sun. OK, I also know Kiss Off. I like a lot of irritating music. Not this though.

5/10. I don't really know how to feel about this album. On the one hand, ok really hoping that the lyrics in most of the songs are written with a sense of irony, otherwise they sounds like the repetitive, juvenile drawings or a horny 17 year old boy. In combination with some of the ridiculous melodies it's hard to describe some tracks like 'Ugly', 'Please Don't Go' or 'Gone Daddy Gone' as anything other than annoying. However, subject to the above caveat there are some songs with nice, energetic riffs like 'Blister in the Sun' or 'Add It Up' which amount to very compelling pieces! Also 'Goof Feeling' is a lovely softer addition which decently crafted lyrics and a satisfying melodic backing. All this seems to aggregate out somewhere in the middle for me.
Seems alright. Not blowing my mind or anything. Hear heavy Rolling Stones influences. Ok, the last song actually got me now. Love the violin/cello?
I really enjoyed the moments of barely held together chaos in the instrumental parts, especially in Add It Up and Kiss Off, and the fun xylophone in Gone Daddy Gone. The band's acoustic texture is awesome, dirty but clear enough that the moving parts are still discernible. On the other hand, I actually had to keep myself from laughing at certain parts listening to the lead vocalist. The talking moments and lyrics are pathetic, but they sound from the heart and are almost excusable given the songwriter was a high schooler when he wrote them. There are plenty of catchy classics on this album that are maybe even good, but the teenage angst is so well-communicated (in that pathetic kind of way) I can't bring myself to put the Femmes in my listening rotation. Final verdict: the Violent Femmes' sound is great on this album, but the lyrics are a major turn-off.

This album has good compositions and interesting instrumentation, but falls flat vocally and lyrically. Not something I'm likely to listen to again.
I burned myself out on this album in high school during the 80’s. Hard to listen to it with fresh ears these 30 some years later.
Not sure what to make of this album. As a fan of Lou Reed I could detect a Lou Reedesque tone throughout but in a way I found it a but irritating. Maybe that's unfair because the vocals were good throughout, I am maybe letting bias cloud my judgement. The more acoustic tracks weren't a bad listen but some other tracks diabolical. Overall I think it's worthy of the top end of 2 stars
Folk Punk made of whiny, winchy and screamy vocals straining my patience while having some promising instrumental parts which the rest of the album just doesn't live up to.
Only knew Good Feelings for having it heard in HIMYM ! Was actually happy like this. The music itself as nothing bad in it but the voice is grating and get quite painful after a while 2.5
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes I wish I could enjoy this album personally, but the way they sing and play the melodies throughout the album just turned it off for me. Really rough and out of place at times, while it does sound fun on the surface, it's just not appealing to listen to most of the time. A bit too much of the garage band sound here - the vocals made me cringe at times - but the bass player is phenomenal
When this was released I'm sure it would've blown my mind, however in it's current context I didn't enjoy it much. It's pretty passable if you don't take notice of the lyrics.
Disappointing. I love Blister in the Sun. I figured there’d be more in the album. But it sounds like every song was something the Ramones could do better.

It's just Midwest emo before Midwest emo was a thing. That's the only thing that makes it impressive, is the fact that this was never done before this album. After everyone figured out how to terribly sing over terrible instrumentals, though, it became just the same as every other. I couldn't even tell when one song started and another ended. But ya know what? When I don't listen too closely and just jam the music, it's not too bad.

Best: Ugly or Confessions (can't decide) Worst: Liked songs: 25%, 3/12 Light 2 I can definitely appreciate the influence the album had on the alt rock/punk scene, more so with the lyrics than the sound, because really the sound just isn't for me. I was really interested in the folk/punk label, but just didn't love it. The influence on my favorite genre of music and the lyrics are enough to bump it up to a 2 though.

Wat een plaat, Blisters in the sun klinkt oprecht goed, maar Confessions is echt om te janken zo slecht. En dat gebeurt nu bij meerdere nummers, dat de zanger maar een beetje schreeuwt en klaagt in de microfoon, pfoe dit is niet makkelijk om door te komen! nee dit was zeker geen favoriet album, er zaten een paar prima nummers in, en 2 nummers die ik echt wel leuk vond, maar het grootste deel vond ik echt ondermaats. Struggled a bit with this one… Opening track has a lot of promise then gets very forgettable. Prove My Love almost brings it back but that track is basically the first song re-hashed.
I enjoyed the first track the most to en the rest kind of felt like more of the same but not quite as catchy.
It's got quite a lot of Jonathan Richman and just like with his oeuvre I like the hits (Blister is great, as is Gone Daddy Gone) but the rest leaves me cold. The combination of overactive bass with the scratchy acoustic guitar and tinny drums just makes it sound like a couple of street corner buskers shouting to get the attention of passing tourists.
Started off good was enjoying it then it became a bit samey and and i felt lost its way was listening and then i seemed to drift away and not pay attention to the lyrics anymore.
The first song sucked. The other were.......... Fine. Dude's chronically off key.

Mostly annoying, with the occasional good bit (vocals terrible, occasional interesting guitar parts), just sounds cheap and trashy. Gone Daddy Gone is the only track I liked the whole way through. Largely just made me think about living in Australia for a year in 2000, where every, and I mean every, pub/bar band played ‘blister in the sun’. I only knew it as the ‘oi song’ then, and to this day I don’t understand why it was such a big deal there.
Saw these once and didn't get it. Think I got confused by the drummer standing up and just too alternative. Remember speaking to the bouncer for some reason and he enquired what is this shit.... he has a point. Extra star for Blister.

Blister in the sun is iconic and the rest of the album was largely post 70’s grungy rock but nowhere near what would come with the likes of nirvana. The two good songs kinda carry

Not sure how this album made the list… I really tried to like it. Despite having a historical dislike 👎 for the first song, ‘blister in the sun’ It just feels very inconsistent. What I do love is the organic instrumental vibe and the excellent mixing that gives the instruments a live feeling and space and clarity. The lead guitarist and bass sound amazing. But the singing sometimes feels painful and whiny. Track 1: annoying full stop. Particularly the bit when it goes quiet and the annoying catchy back packer vibe. Track 2: excellent track Track 3: annoying singing and reggae rhythm Track 4: annoying ‘sexy’ lyrics Track 5: whiny 😫 annoying singing about being lonely Track 6: Really good song. Love the chorus and guitars. Less whiny 😫 Track 7: love the whole punk folk Track 8: well this song dragged… Track 9: Who let the child play the xylophone? Still a banger though! Track 10: a great closing track 2.5 🌟

Really did not like this. Vocals were weird, shouty, and off-key, and the instrumentals sounded like a high school band somehow got a recording contract and made an album of them jamming in their garage (which probably isn't far off from the truth).

I hadn't heard of the group before, and the album wasn't my favorite. However, I did enjoy the tracks 'Add It Up' and 'Gimme the Car.' While I generally like noisy songs, the vibe of this album felt too chaotic for my taste, with the noise seeming out of rhythm. Overall, it didn't stand out as anything special to me.

I mean, who doesn't love Blister in the Sun? Wish the whole album were like that, but unfortunately it's not -- I guess I can see some proto-Mountain Goats here, but I just don't love when it seems like the lead singer of a band is bad on purpose.

Blister In The Sun: I thought this was going to be chicks, this isn't a chick. This is a classic banger though, but this dude sounds a bit whiny. Maybe this is a chick, I have no idea, this whispering is weird but could be a chick. Song's okay, reminds me of the White Stripes. Kiss Off: Jesus, did they have their bass close enough to the mic when they recorded this? This turned into a bit of a surf pop jam, I can hear those bass strings struggling to stay intact. Dude's slappin' the bass like it's his wife after his 16th beer. Needs more electric guitar, but still kinda bangs tbh. Damn, that last strum broke the bass. Please Do Not Go: Bass. This song should have been in Napoleon Dynamite if it wasn't, gives that vibe. Honestly though, this isn't good music, I could sing like this guy, he sounds like me complaining about my job. This bass slaps my ass though, seems to be the theme here. The "bye bye bye bye" part is too much, and the whiny speech, cut that shit. Song's two times as long as it should be. Add It Up: Another song that makes me question the gender of the vocalist. Oh, boring start, but shits getting litty now. I feel like I'm on the dance floor with Elvis. A bit of a gross song though, "why can't I get just one screw?," "why can't I just get one fuck?". Okay chill, also why does it sound like all the instruments were recording on the rustiest old ass recording device imaginable? Song's pretty good but far too edgy for 1983, you can't say "fuck" in a song back then. Dude's horny as fuck, cringe alert. Remaster this shit, the instruments sound like shit. Confessions: Feel like I'm in the wild west, but also like I'm about to fall asleep. The bass slaps, as usual, the bassist is easily the most talented member of this band. I see why this song is the least listened to on the entire album. Maybe try writing your lyrics before recording your song. Reminds me of the Tragically Hip, and I hate that band. I went and got another beer and the song is still going, skip. Prove My Love: Diggin the more surf rock vibe this one has, I like the happy vibes. Much better than the rest of the songs. I could see this in a Tony Hawk games, shredding the coast, 720 Christ Air over the ice-cream stand at the beach. Promise: A lot of this is starting to sound the same. For some reason I thought it was going to be a chich vocalist this time, even though it hasn't been the other songs. This could be in Napoleon Dynamite, just hipster nonsense people who peaked in 2016 would love. Not a big fan of spoken word in songs, especially when he sounds like he's cumming while speaking. I've definitely heard this before in something, but its fucking awful, sound like me singing in the shower about my day. To The Kill: Start of this sounds like me at Walmart picking up the demo guitar in the toy section. This album is honestly kind of trash, who thought it should be one of the top 1001 albums of all time? Dude sounds like he wants to do be doing but singing in this band. This song sucks so much, are they high? Gone Daddy Gone: Okay, they've found the Ficsher Price xylophone while exploring the toy section, good start. This song is familiar, maybe in a Tony Hawk game? It's good, but again, what's with his voice, he sounds so tired. Is he talking to his own daddy? This xylophone solo makes up for any complaints I made previously, I feel like I'm playing Fossil Canyon in Diddy Kong Racing, bring me back! Good Feeling: More like Bad Feeling. Gotta end with a banger, not an instant-sleeper borefest. Shred all your most unique instruments to end the album. I'm not listening to the bonus track, they didn't prove worthy of it.

Surprised it is males and not females based on the group's name. I enjoyed the riff in the Fender's ad more than the music from this group!
I’m glad these guys found music to get all that anger out 🤣. Seriously, with all the teenage angst I’d be worried that they’d express themselves in less desirable ways. They do take the evergreen subject matter of being a nerdy dude with no game and unable to get laid, and bring some jams. “Blister in the Sun” was deservedly everywhere, it’s so dam catchy. It was practically an anthem in nearly every 80s teen movie I remember. Some really nice guitar work throughout (especially on “Prove My Love”). But the rest of the album doesn’t rise to those elevated heights of “Blister” for me, but I get why they’re considered a legendary band by many of my Gen-X brethren.
Would make a suitable support band at a mid sized venue. Theres humour and rudeness. And terrible dreary vocals.

Never really liked the Femmes. Sounds like these guys didn't practice much or that's just the style? Everyone knows the 1st 2 tracks which are the really only decent ones. Maybe one more with a xylophone that's not too bad. I don't know the impact the Femnes had on music but must have been something to make the list...1.8.

I read the global comments on this album, and made a TLDR as some of them are really on point: Acoustic punk, Mick Jagger impersonation, sometimes Mick Jagger impersonating Bob Dylan, for some reason not made in the ‘90s. I did not like it.

It's not bad - kind of rough and all over the place. The Xylophone doesn't fit in Gone Daddy Gone at all. Vocals are pretty repetitive, beats and guitar are very simple. This is done way better by other contemporary bands (e.g. Gang of Four, Feelies). Gets a 2 for Blister in the Sun and Prove My Love.

The only knowledge I previously had about the Violent Femmes is that they were in Sabrina The Teenage Witch. I’ve now learned that they’re a pretty depressing sounding band, not really what I’m looking for to get me through the day.
There are a couple good songs on here like "Blister in the Sun" and "Gone Daddy Gone", but most of the rest of it isn't anything to write home about.
Honestly, way less interesting than i thought it was going to be. It's still good, just not close to a 5 or 4, okay, standard. its cooky, but at times its cooky for the sake of being cooky. dont know how often i'd come back to it after today. I think there are way more interesting albums from 83 than this
Had I heard this when I was seventeen, I think I would have loved it. Hearing it for the first time in my sixties, I can't say it does much for me. The singer is too intense at this distance. The band are really tight though and the song Good Feeling is almost touching.
I know lots of people (especially Gen-X'ers) consider this a classic. I never saw it as anything more than an OK album by a novelty band. I pretended to like it when I was in college so hipster girls would sleep with me. Ironically, that seems to be what a good portion of this album is about...the struggles of trying to get laid. Now we have apps on our phones for that, so we no longer need the Violent Femmes. Two and one-half stars. The added half-star is for the fumbling, ill-informed sex that happened thanks to this record.

When this popped up I thought to myself,I don't have bloody clue who this band is. So when I put it on I was pleasantly surprised to recognise the first song. They have got a very distinct sound, which I didn't love but didn't hate either. This album felt like a poor rollercoaster. There were ups and downs but I was glad when it was over. Will probably listen to blister in the sun again but non of the others
kiss off: interesting bass line or wtv instrument that is. lot of talky vocals. add it up: lowkey thought this was some dude being angry that he's a virgin. its not. confessions: instrumental breakdown sounds like a bunch of teenagers fucking around with the instruments. gimme the car: nearly thought the beginning riff was smells like teen spirit LMAO. it is not the same tho. - [ ] ehhhh so i did not like that. it was just boring to listen to. and no hate to violent femme fans but um. cool band name, i thought the music would actually sound like the name lmao 😭. like the dude's voice sounds the same in every song. he doesnt change it up at all its just the same kinda talky, annoying sound. not an album that really has a catchy sound yk. its very repetitive and like 3 songs in i wanted to stop listening to it. so there.

I did not care for most of the songs on this album. The whole album was very rough around the edges, the singing in particular I found to be mostly annoying. I was tired of the album around half way through it. It felt like there was a lot of potential but it didn’t work for me. I did enjoy the last song on the album though. 2.5

Had a buddy learning bass guitar ruin Blister in the Sun for me. The rest of the album isn't too bad, just nothing much that stands out imo.
I definitely thought this Blister in the Sun riff was a Blink 182 song. And Gone Daddy Gone - I remember that from the Gnarls Barkley cover/sample... didn't expect that to turn up 9 tracks into this album. Weird one. I didn't really like it. 2.4/5

First thought this was from the 90s or 00s, but then saw it was from 83. So i can se that this has had an influence or was ahead of its time. Did i like it.. meh. Gone daddys gone was alright but this album was not really for me.

Spoiler alert: there is no actual femmes. I spent like 5 minutes malding about it. Funny incel music, Gimme the Car was especially amusing. Didn't like it sonically though

Other than Blister in the sun, it wasn't very memorable
It is an instinctive reflex to clap or drum those 4 notes in the first song. Rest of the album isn't great. Some cool basslines, but other than that it is a boring, droning album. I can't tell if I'm in a bad mood, but I have been giving a lot of 2s and 3s lately.
WOAH did not expect Blister in the Sun to be on this. I never knew who that song was by. Unfortunately that was the highlight of this album and after that it was pretty underwhelming music that got quite boring.
I was unaware that this band sang Blister In The Sun, and Gone Daddy Gone. I was convinced those songs were within the last 20 years. Not in the last 40 years. This band, or at least this album, sounds like some relevant music today. In fact, I am certain this album was the inspiration behind the resurgence of this sound in the early 2010's with the influx of the "the" bands (The Hives, The Vines, The Strokes.... Etc) The Led Zeppelins? - - anyone see that Sum 41 skit with Will Sasso. It was pretty funny? Anyways... This has post punk, Indy, alternative feel to it. NOT MY STYLE. I don't really care for much things punk. But this record was alright. A bunch of forgettable songs, the aforementioned two songs that I was unaware of were great. But aside from that... Mediocre music. No need to relisten to this.

Sad and angsty. The vocals just aren’t for me. The repetitive words/phrases made me chuckle a few times.
I must’ve listened to Blister In The Sun a hundred times in indie clubs through my University days without knowing what it was called or who it was by. So I was immediately grateful for that discovery. The remaining half hour or so was unremarkable. The sound doesn’t deviate much from track to track although the acoustic bass is fun and I had a few chuckles at the lyrics. Can’t see myself coming back to this one, and not sure I really get why it makes the list. I guess you had to be there. 4/1001

I’m pretty sure I don’t like this. Pretty sure, because so many of the songs are catchy in a weird way, despite the fact that the lyrics make no sense and Gano’s voice annoys me. Musically, the songs are fun; the arrangements are interesting, and I particularly enjoy the way the acoustic bass is used. Was this interesting to listen to? Yes. Will I listen to it again? No.

1/? of albums i've heard the one hit wonder and haven't heard any others. i don't absolutely hate it but i don't think it's something i would ever choose to listen to on my own. it's kind of like if male manipulator music was just your brother and cousin and their friends in your garage. the original "midwest emo" blueprint. this is music that probably sounds better and also worse live. like live the quality would be way worse but it would sound intentional. yeah dial up male manipulator music to 11. I like male manipulator music though as long as it's not actually accompanied by male manipulation the leads speaking voice sounds a little bit like Gerard way. or maybe it's the cadence or something this sounds like stuff that if I knew the band members personally, I'd be like "guys this is really good I like it!!" and not be lying but my personal affection for them would be warping my perception. as it is. it's. okay. blister in the sun is fine. there's a few songs where I like the progression or the chorus but then the whine-sing of the verse puts me off. lol.

Lo-fi naive garage rock, somewhat enjoyable but not for me.
Very popular when I was a British exchange student at UW Stout in 1984, although at the time I leaned more towards the punkier local bands like Hüsker Dü and The Replacements. Nevertheless I bought this record and I still have it. It’s testament to how little I’ve played it that it’s still pretty near mint. I still find its nerdy American gothic schtick a little bit fake. Nevertheless I enjoyed giving it another listen.

Folk-punk. Starts well, the guitar and acoustic bass sound is really interesting and catchy, but it all goes downhill very fast when the vocals arrive. Overtones of Lou Reed, but in a bad way.

I tried. Really I did. Enjoyed Blister in the Sun (big Grosse Pointe Blank fan), but the rest went a little far for me. I’m struggling to imagine where it would be listened to. It’s too hard for me.

Not for me. Blister in the Sun is jaunty enough (and I now realise that I know this song from some advert or other) but cannot get into the relentless jauntiness of the majority of this album. The only other track I like is the slower tempo Good Feeling
mostly acoustic music with occasional bouts into chaos. the vocals come across as the insane ramblings of a weirdo. honestly, i found much of it pretty unlistenable.
Unique, creepy. I've never loved the Femmes but you can't say they aren't completely different from everything else out there.

I'm not impressed by the barebone instrumentals or the folky singing.
It was a little rough. My thoughts go out to all the parents in the 80’s who had to endure this noise coming from their angsty teen’s bedroom. I’ve always found their most popular track “Blister in the Sun” to be quite unremarkable. The vocal track basically just mimics the guitar melody. Pretty lazy and not interesting at all. The album does have some originality. The acoustic bass is pretty funky. But overall, not my thing.
“Why can’t I get just one fuck?” asks the singer. Because your music sounds like it’s for children.
Not for me. Don’t mind there sound, but others have done it better. It’s like they’re trying too hard vibe wise while doing the bare minimum instrumentally/musically.
Sounded kinda like Jeremy Fisher at times. Very progressive for the early 80’s methinks.
This feels like an album you buy on vinyl just to discuss how you own it with other people who bought it on vinyl. While a stripped back early punk sound has a lot of appeal, it needs to be combined with a lot of creativity to make an album’s worth of content interesting. Nearly every song the Angry Ladies put on this album is just a repeat of the same 4 odd bars over and over again until the end of the song. The closest they come to a bridge is the occasional breakdown into mindless flaying of the instruments. The notable exception to all of this is the final track Good Feeling, which abruptly is a whole different feel from the rest of the album. It’s a decent song and if there were a couple more nuggets like it sprinkled throughout I think it would have lended this album some much needed variety. The songwriting is lacking on this album, limited to coming up with pretty much 4-8 bars per track with maybe 3 chords. That being said, I enjoyed the instrumentation. The bass stands out as the most inspired work on the album, sitting front and center throughout and playing non stop riffs. The licks may suffer from the same repetitiveness as the tracks, but they’re still pretty good. The guitar is decent too, and the drums are sloppy but pretty fun. Overall I think this Frumpy Broads drags when listened to all at once, but hearing a track or two individually is nice.
Yet another album with classic songs (Blister in the Sun / Gone Daddy Gone) that I recognize even though I don’t know the band. There’s something about the guy’s voice that sounds… lazy? Almost sounds like the guy is singing karaoke or something. Hard to put my finger on what it is, but it makes me feel a bit bored too.
Blister and the Sun, followed by nine lesser versions of Blister and the Sun. Okay, maybe except for Please Do Not Go because that's another banger. Otherwise, pretty samey. I get wanting to stick to a signature sound, but there's a very fine line that separates the thought that makes you go "Aww man, love the distinct sound that Violent Femmes never fails to deliver," and the thought that this band is a one-trick pony. A little more variety would've been nice, because the steak was nice but it just needed a little more seasoning.

Blister in the Sun is an insanely catchy song made with the simplest riff ever. I can’t explain why, but I just really don’t like these guys. The sound is pretty annoying.

The instrumentation was my favorite part about this album, but even that lost me at times. The vocals were grating and got annoying very quickly. These songs might be creative and ahead of their time, but I still don’t find myself enjoying most of them. Three songs stood out to me, Blister In The Sun, Confessions, and Good Feeling.
A bit monochromatic and repetitive, and even the better songs tend to go on a bit long. However, my feelings may be tainted by associating the album with a particularly annoying ex who played it all of the time.

If just a few things were slightly different, I think I would've really enjoyed this album, as the overall style of music is right up my alley. As it is, I real quick got real annoyed with the grating voice of the lead singer, and that paired with the repeating-peat-peating nature of many of the songs had me super questioning what the heck the band thought they were doing.
It’s meh. It has the songs we all know, “blister in the sun” and “gone daddy gone”. I don’t hate it but it is very “samey”, kind of headache inducing as an entire album. Likely won’t listen to on purpose again.

The second and eighth track, Kiss off and To the kill where somewhat interesting, the rest of the album was forgettable and repetitive.
I actually listened to the entire album, which is a huge accomplishment for an album that's predominantly punk. What's more, the non-punk elements were actually interesting and even good at some individual points of the album. Still, definitely not enough to make a mostly-punk album enjoyable though.

I struggle with this album because I either really liked a song or despised it. From Add It Up to To The Kill i was annoyed by the whining and creepy rapey music (begging for a fuck isn’t my thing). But their radio hits were fun and I enjoyed the opening of the record too.

I'm not the first to comment on this album being a decade ahead of its time, sound wise. As for my own 2c, I don't care it was ahead of its time; I'm judging by current standards. I'll settle with Blister in the Sun being rather brilliant, and the rest of the album being rather ordinary.

If pop punk from the 2000s had a great great grandfather, this is it. Enjoyable enough, probably wouldn’t listen to the album again on my own but wouldn’t be upset if it was playing wherever I was.
Very upbeat high energy music. Some songs better than others. The vocalist can tend to scream a bit too much for me. This would definitely keep me awake on a long car ride. Otherwise I probably would not listen to it often.
Unrefined punk. Simple yet catchy in so many ways. Enjoyed the xylophone on "Gone Daddy Gone". Fun commentary in "Kiss Off". That said, this was never one of my favorite punk artists.

Now I have, because of this 1,001 Albums list. Amy I happy I did? Hmm. Not really. It's kinda just like more songs that are similar but not quite as charming and radio-friendly. I just can't take this "I don't give a shit about being a bad singer, isn't it funny!" for more than a single and B-side. Also, I HATE THE SOUND OF ACOUSTIC BASS.

I've listened to this album many times, and I've seen the Violent Femmes in concert. It's been a while since I've last listened to this album, but I could still sing along with most of the lyrics. However, this is not the same album for me that it used to be. The music is really good, but I can't overlook the lyrics like I used to. The songs seem to originate from a point of a view of a high school punk without much regard for women. There are tracks on this album that I would skip for sure - every time. There is music that I still like from the Femmes, but I couldn't recommend this album.
