Reviews (page 3 of 12)
This was solid, had never listened to a full album before but enjoyed the vibes
Uiterst lekker, hier kan ik wel van genieten. Kleine jer erbij en gaan
Good album
Who could dislike Bob Marley is all I have to say.
Fantastic album. Some of Bob Marley's best songs, great music and recording.
The first Bob Marley album I heard - like for many others, I’m sure - was Legend. So it’s hard to go from a greatest hits to a prober album release, but this is a killer album. Bend Down Low is a hidden gem and many of these songs would fit on Legend. Fantastic stuff - and check out the full album cover of Natty Dread that jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter pulled off.
The Man doesn't miss
Listened once, not enough to fully digest.
Surprising production value for the time
Bob Marley natty dread
Peak fiery mid 70s Marley.
Album #6 This is always a great album to have on in the background or on the car stereo as one drives down to Key West with the windows open and the ocean breezes flooding your world with BM lyrics and the salt air. Music that always creates a carefree experience without diving into the true meaning behind his lyrics.
Definitive reggae, a great album with a mellow, easy-going tempo with simple guitar strumming and The Meters inspired base and lead guitar.
Preciouse

This is a very good classical album from Bob Marly and the wailers I would recommend it 10/10
Fucking brilliant!!!
Great music to chill while I procrastinated work (just for a few minutes :-)
Awesome album for island music. Bob Marley was a musical genius and created beautiful songs.
Another top album.
Was ein tolles Album!
damn. i was moved
love him!
fantastisk. TIL at jeg aldrig før i dag har lyttet til studieversionen af No Woman No Cry
There’s just something about Reggae and Ska. No other music makes me want to get up and dance in the same way, the skank is just irresistible. Coming midway through a particularly fertile period of Marley’s career, Natty Dread is not The Wailers first great album, that would be Catch A Fire, nor is it their best, that would be Exodus. What Natty Dread has going for it as an album is that it is probably the definitive solidification of what Reggae can and should be. The funkiness of the music, the quality of the performance is just top form here. There is a definitive sound, the album sounds cohesive, I don’t think Marley’s voice sounded better, except possibly on Redemption Song. But every song is perfectly formed. What I really love is how neatly each one builds. There’s often an extended instrumental section towards the ends, and there’s this fantastic trick of building up layers of instruments gradually, adding an organ, then a new guitar line, then horns, then harmonica. It’s great, and it sounds fantastic. And I’ve not even mentioned the quality of the songwriting…
Excellent
Such a great album
5/5 one of my favorite albums
I’ve never taken the time to listen to Bob’s actual albums. And after this, I’m ashamed of myself. I’m going to erase every time I’ve ever listened to legend from my memory and work through his back catalogue. Thoroughly enjoyed this! 4.5
Always a classic!
Bob rocks. 5/5
Fantastic
Great. Politically relevant to today.
Harmonious grooves, rhythmic progressive bass chords, organ, flute, trumpets, saxophone - it's so musically rich and diverse. Even the percussion instruments are layered - it's an orchestra not a 4/5 piece band. Bob Marley is a genius. Everything's gonna be alright.
Amazing album
Bob Marley was just a messenger
Love this album-if you want an introduction to reggae, this is it.
just amazing! a new fave
All Bob Marley is 5 stars. Reggae music always makes me feel better.
a classic
Another great Bob Marley record. I'm not sure if I prefer this to the other Bob Marley album I've got through the list so far, Exodus, but it was overall a wonderful listen. It's just so fun to relax and work to. I don't feel qualified enough to truly judge or even understand reggae entirely, but I know that I loved this. Favourite: Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)
Way better than The Police.
Perfect reggae
Natty Dread is an absolute classic. Easy 5 stars.
Pivotal album in bringing reggae to the mainstream. Poignant music and lyrics.
Helt otroligt bra album, tycker detta är reggae på som otroligt hög nivå. Favorit låt: Them belly full, no woman No cry
Reggae!!!!! Äntligen en mix upp från våra vanliga rock och pop album. Bob Marley är grym och detta albumet tyckte jag representerade hans grymhet. FAVORIT: Rebel music
All you ever need in music: rhythm, a theme that wanders in and out, amazing musicians, endless permutations in a perfect build, and Bob Marley!
I spent decades thinking I didn't like Bob Marley because I didn't like the stoners who were into him at my school. Turns out he's incredible. Who knew? My loss!
bob is the man
Classic! Who doesn’t love Bob Marley? I will say, this is probably the first time I’ve heard the original recording of No Woman No Cry. It threw me for a moment because I’ve always heard the live version. This album came out in 1974. I didn’t come out until 1975. These songs have been the soundtrack to many cook outs and family gatherings over the course of my life. Even though his life ended early, Bob Marley is such an icon. One can only wonder how far he would’ve gone had he lived longer. Not just in music but also in politics as he songs often have a political theme. I will say, one reggae album at a time is enough for me. I love the music, but the songs start to sound alike to me. I like a little variety in the soundtracks to my gatherings.
Full of classics I know and a bunch of them with plenty of heart and soul that I’d never heard before. Absolutely amazing.
Easiest 5/5 so far. Them Belly Full hits so hard even almost 40 years later.
I remember listening to this album with my uncle.
"Natty Dread" is the seventh studio albums by Jamaican reggae band Bob Marley and the Wailers. It was their first album without Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The lyrics are spiritually charged with many songs addressing political and social issues. There are multple songwriters listed due to contractual issues with Bob and he apparently did write all the lyrics. The album received wide spread critical acclaim and commercially reached #42 in the UK and #92 in the US. People screaming with the bass and percussion driving the music open "Lively Up Yourself." A bluesy-soulful guitar. Horns adding a jazz feel. The I-Threes are the three female background singers killing it here and throughout the album. A celebration of skanking, reggae and sex. An organ is the main melody instrument in "No Woman, No Cry ." A subtle reggae beat with the organ overriding with gospel. A nostalgic remembrance of growing up in poverty and the happiness of friends. The lyrics are credited to childhood friend Vincent Ford whom Marley said he would have starved if not for him. Optimistic and one of my favorite Marley songs. "Natty Dread" has horns and some more great reggae beat by the drums, percussion and bass. The I-Threes" repeating Natty Dread. About the Rastafari movement. The last two songs address political and social corruption while promoting Rasta. "Talkin' Blues" starts with an acoustic guitar and is a rock song before the reggae beat kicks in. More great backing vocals. The horns come back in the closer "Revolution." Guitar, percussion and we end very chill. This is a tremendous album. The bass. The backing vocals. Besides the reggae beat, there're influences of blues, gospel, jazz, soul and rock. Of course, that is the base of reggae. But, what is unique is the start of most songs which start in a different genre with a different instrument. The music and tone are optimistic even in the face of poverty and social/political injustice lyrics. Highly recommended.
Do you ever encounter rock music fans who say they don't really like The Beatles? I have and it's weird. But... I am a reggae fan who isn't really a fan of Bob Marley. The title track and Bend Down Low stand out on this album but the rest of the songs don't really do it for me.
Ótimo álbum, boas vibes, mas achei meio repetitivo.
Genre defining album from a seminal artist. Still sounds as fresh now as it did almost 50 years ago. Stunning.
As soon as it starts sense of chilled grooves just come through. No Woman No Cry of course an all time classic but lots of tunes throughout this.
Bob Marley. Wordsmith extraordinaire. Wonderful music. One of the greatest albums of all time.
Ya mon
Love it!
Can't go wrong with a vintage Bob Marley album. This is the first time I've heard the non-live version of No Woman No Cry and I have to say the vibe is more chill.
Jaaaa deze komt altijd van pas!! Alleen maar super platen
The natty professor. Säga vad man vill, men det är ju en riktig klassiker.
This is my absolute favourite Marley and the Wailers. album. Just love everything about it. There are some musical subtleties to this that are just sublime.
J'adore le reggea et cette album est juste trop smooth hehe je le mets dans ma liste. c,est parfait pour mon algorithme. 5
I mean, it's Marley, but it is missing the power of the Wailers, and doesn't have the real maturity that Exodus brought in my opinion.
Amazing, first true surprise from this generator, I never listened to it before and I loved it. The songs sound so true and sad. I liked especially "Them belly full" and "Rebel music". Great album.
I didnt expect to enjoy this as much as exodus...but I did
Chill and pleasant, but still has a bit of edge. No woman, no cry is definitely the best on the album
Fantastic album. Lots of classic songs.
Stellar stellar album. Listen to the studio version of No Woman No Cry and you'll hear a version that's faster and less heavy on the organ and backing vocals than the much more famous live version from Live at the Lyceum. The second side's intensity drops a little from the first, but it's from a 6 to a 5 really.
Just a whole vibe. Can't go wrong with Bob Marley!
Love it
The guitar is fucking killer
Flawless!
Awesome album. A very pleasant album to listen and you can't go wrong with Bob Marley.
This is an absolute masterpiece. Loved this one.
Even though many of the songs on this album have been horribly overplayed, this album is just so solid. I'm reminded of what great musicians these guys were and the production is just so clean and well done. The songwriting is cohesive, every song but one is a stand out, just a fantastic album. 5/5
I've never been massively into reggae, but I enjoyed this. Absolutely, convincingly doing its own thing while being tuneful and accessible.
é o grande mestre não adianta
He’s so good. They’re a great band. I only really know the obvious ‘hits’ but everything I hear is pretty great. I’m glad this project made me listen to another full album.
Another outstanding album!! Bob Marley was one of a kind! People have tried to emulate his sound, but have never been able to capture it just right. His music has a way of instilling hope and happiness in me every time I listen to it. I find the song No Woman No Cry almost therapeutic (I can turn it on on a bad day and feel better instantly). The part of the song where he repeats "Everything's going to be alright" just forces you to put everything in perspective. Such excellent reggae music with subtle notes of funk mixed in. Every song on this record is amazing! Favourite songs: No Woman No Cry, Bend Down Low, Talkin' Blues, Them Belly Full (But We Hungry), Revolution, Natty Dread, Lively Up Yourself Least favourite song: if forced to pick one, Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock). It is still a phenomenal song, it just didn't hit as hard for me as the other songs. 5/5
An artists I previously only knew through best of albums. So much more in here.
5/5 I mean c'mon it's bob Marley you doesn't like him
Great album.
A very good album, worthy of recommendation
Well, this is an album I'd not heard of before, and I'm not sure it could be any more perfect. I'd not even heard these versions of the tracks I had heard before. Great stuff.
Instant Classic
Contains some classic songs that I already knew, but plenty that I hadn’t experienced before. Great from start to finish, listened multiple times.
Brilliant
Love this album.
Well, that was an excellent way to start off a Friday. Would probably also work for a Sunday. Or, really, most days.
Bass resonates through the album in a comfortingly familiar pace. Very repeatable listen.
This is amazing. after a lifelong (well actually only my youth) of having only heard “Legend” I started to get to know more about Marley when I was in college. I was in Jamaica just the other month and it made me very happy to see how beloved he is over there. And with total reason, do you know a more influential artist? I don’t think I do, I know many more famous ones, but none as influential. I have a soft spot for reggae and this is going out with a 5.
Classic
I mean, it's a classic Reggae album. Like THE reggae album.
Great album, no skips and just an all out good time. Favorite song was Revolution
A album full of good vibes, great lyrics, and bob marley. This is a revolutionary album for reggae and one of my favourite reggae records I have heard
Classic Bob Marley & The Wailers album, 5 star like any other BM from that period but this one together with Catch A Fire, might be their best but it is hard to say ..would be nice if some of their earlier albums are in the list as well.
Love me some reggae with this warm weather. I was more familiar with other versions of Lively Up Yourself and No Woman No Cry, so I needed some adjusting, but with the second listen I was all in for the entire album.
4.5/5 good chill music
Reggae doesn’t get much better than this. Catch a Fire will always be my favourite Marley album but this is a seminal album in its own right. Definitely prefer the version of No Woman, No Cry on this album.
This is the album and artist all reggae try to live up to. Pretty easy 5 stars when it defines a genre.
Probably still my favorite of his (along with Exodus and Burnin') from THE reggae singer.
Wonderful, not quite the Marley that gets played on the radio in Scotland, but probably more authentic because of that. The version of 'no woman no cry' is very different to the famous version on the "Legend" album, but still very impressive. For clarity, I loved it!
Does it get much better? I think not , what an album, special mention to the best version of no Woman no Cry . What a fucking Champ
Hands up if you love reggae but have never listened to a Bob album? Anybody? Just me yeah? I'll get my coat
Amazing great. The beginning of greatness.
I really enjoyed this album and the lyrical themes within the tracks.
9/10. Rather nice
I recently learned that my husband thought "No Woman No Cry" meant if you don't have a woman, she can't make you cry. Like "no pain no gain" or something. I think I need to listen to a lot more Marley. Back in the 90s I named my cat Marley, now I rarely listen at all.
Beautiful blast from the past. Nice to listen to it front to back for once
Brilliant, chilled out vibes. Like a best of album
Pretty good
Seminal Reggae from the master. Proper summer album!!
Wow. Best Marley band ever. Did not think I'd write that but the songs are all sooo good...all of them. With the exception of the closing song which is still more than listenable. Marley's best, need I say more?
An outstanding album that I loved since the first time I heard it. I had a college radio show years ago that was reggae/ska-based programming and components of this album were a backbone.
Amazing
A great classic
Stellar! I hadn't ever heard this and was mainly new some songs from Live! Need this one.
Genial!
"A hungry mouth is a hungry mouth"? "A hungry mouth is a hungry mob"? "A hungry mouth is a hungry mind"? I'm not sure which it is, if any, but I'm also not sure it matters. While Bob's full prophet mode, he could sing, "A hungry mouth is an orange as seen through binoculars made of jelly" and I'd think it was a message from heaven. So respect him for the "Bend down low, let me tell you what I know" humblebrag. Ain't no one stooping down to anyone else's level here except Bob. Anyway, this blew my mind in a way it hasn't before. The grooves are eternal and gorgeous. And it has that remarkable James Brown-ian quality of every instrument--be it string, wind, wood or brass--contributing to the rhythm. If you'd asked me yesterday what my got-to Marley is, I'd've told you 'Legend'. But that's a celebration of Bob-the-songwriter and cultural icon. This is really where I turn. To the proof of hope and salvation through unbreakable rhythmic unity. And I like how the songwriting credits are shared around.
It's quite an accomplishment to make music that's so chill and still makes people want to move. Best track: No Woman No Cry
Jammin brudah
4.5/5. Ok I kinda get it now, thanks Ilya
I could listen to Bob Marley \"wail\" for days at a time. His voice is just that iconic, and his songs are the right ratio of catchy to saying something. When you're in the mood for reggae, you can't do better than Marley.
Awesome music Bob was the man!
Love this. Great rhythms and relaxing enough to let me work at the same time.
Love Bob!
Have to give a 5 considering I added 99% of tracks to the playlist
classico do bob
Really glad I listened to this and want to listen again!
Bob, Nuff said
Tasty
Made me happy, reminded me of my grandmother who loved reggae. Pleasantly surprised by how good EVERY song is .
Classic reaggae sounds, feels light and groovy all along!
Don’t know if it’s how little music I listened to this week or if it’s just a bunch of bangers right in a row. Bob rules
I prefer later, live versions of No Woman, but come on. Bob is an all timer.
Now that’s what I’m talking about !!! This is almost a greatest hits album all by itself.
Chill vibes, perfect to walk in nature
10/10 love bob marley
Brilliant
I and I gonna have things our way
Amazing. should be 10 stars.
Great album
Sets the stage for everything else.
amazing
What the Straight White Man™️ Did to Marley’s legacy and reggae as a whole is unforgivable. This is an album of musicians at the peak of their craft, the tones alone across this are so sumptuous and warm and joy-giving.
Great album for cooking :D
South Africa vibes
Great reggae album. Love this sound of the tropics, almost transports me back yo the years of my youth in the Caribbean
When I was back doing bass lessons, we spent a lot of time working on reggae - something to do with the clear, bass-forward rhythms were a good fit for practicing the fundamentals of fingerwork. That meant having to do my homework on Bob Marley for the first time. Overall Natty Dread's a pretty good album, if not necessarily on an even keel throughout. It's not quite his best, anyway, despite being imminently listenable. Fav tracks: No Woman No Cry, Am-A-Do
Never listened to a Bob Marley album before. Liked this more than I expected!
Easy to listen to, got jump scared when he sang about bombing a church or something lol
Very nice music. Lyrics were very surprisingly violent sometimes. Good album.
i like it more than "catch a fire". it's definitely more memorable. definitely more political. i'm still not a big reggae fan, but this one seems pretty solid. band seems tighter than "catch".
So many good tracks. Hard not to be scarred by No Woman No Cry’s co option
not my thang
Oh yeah. Just by looking at the track list I see why this is on there his list. Lively up yourself- a great opener! Very Bob Marley, very reggae. No woman no cry is obviously a classic and such a great track. I quite liked the lyrics of Them Belly Full. Rebel music has almost a western feel to it if that makes sense. So jah s’eh was quite fun. The title track too was absolutely great. Revolution was pretty good. A great blend of lyrics and music. It closed decently, but I don’t really know how to fully critique the album. It’s obviously a very good, classic reggae album with some great tracks, but I didn’t personally enjoy it that much. 3.5/5 ⭐️ 176/1089
1/1001 Acho que não poderia começar de melhor maneira. Mesmo reggae não sendo o meu gênero favorito tenho muito respeito pelo mesmo, sempre trazendo aquela sensação boa de paz de espirito. Lively Up Yourself - 85 No Woman, No Cry - 90 Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) - 80 Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock) - 75 So Jah Seh - 75 Natty Dread - 80 Bend Down Low - 75 Talkin' Blues - 80 Revolution - 85 Media: 80.5
2 reggae albums in a row (yesterday UB40) and this album while not his best is far superior. Where I struggle with a lot of reggae sounding the same Marley has so much range and that shows up here. These songs have a reggae base but he’s taking the sound to new places. Love how the album kicks off with 2 bangers with No Woman No Cry and Lively Up Yourself. Feels like the rest is gravy with chill vibes and well constructed songs til the last note. Bob Marley really a GOAT.
Another Bob Marley album. I like Marley. I don't think this one differs much from the others we've listened to. I wonder how many more to come? My biggest issue with this project (or rather the person that put this list together) is too much repetition. While I enjoyed the listen, I would rather have heard an artist that we haven't heard multiple albums by already. That aside, it is a good album.
Bob is the Mike Jackson of reggae and he proves why with Natty Dread. Not even his best project but he delivers a solid album with many enjoyable reggae classics.
Average
How can you not love listening to a Bob Marley album?
Never has an artist been able to make songs about starvation, grinding poverty, and governmental oppression sound so goddamn cheerful. Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer were no longer with the band, but the incredible rhythm section of the Barrett brothers ("Family Man" Aston on bass and Carlton on drums) makes it virtually impossible to listen to this album without moving your body. Fantastic stuff from top to bottom.
Lively up yourself - 2/5 No woman no cry - 5/5 Them belly full(but we hungry) - 5/5 Rebel music - 4/5 So jah seh - 4/5 Natty dread - 3/5 Bend down low - 4/5 Talkin blues - 5/5 Revolution - 4/5 Am A do - 2/5
Can't really go wrong with Bob Marley
Great introduction to reggae for me. The album is incredibly calming and easy to listen to, with Bob Marley making it feel like he's speaking directly to you. Since I'd only heard a few reggae songs before, Natty Dread was a perfect starting point. It's Bob Marley, so of course it's good. Definitely made me want to explore more reggae.
his best album that ive heard so far
Great album. You could have this playing on repeat at a party and it would never get old. Just good vibes straight through.
It wasn't until I read the wiki page after listening to this album that I found out why this album feels like it is just lacking a bit of oomph: "Previously Marley had recorded with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer as the Wailers, and this was his first record without them." This is a good album, but it just doesn't rise to the levels of his previous work. I'd give it 3.5 stars, but I feel like bumping it up to 4 here, though I could also understand people putting it at a 3.
Mmmmm, that sweet sweet saxophone and harmonica accompaniment
Easy to listen to and it feels nice to listen to it. Favourite Track(s): No Woman No Cry, So Jah S'eh Least Favourite Track(s): Bend Down Low
A second album from Bob Marley & The Wailers in quick succession having had Catch a Fire a week earlier. Like that album, this is a very good listen and example of their reggae rock sound. This has a bit more energy to it though, with a bit more of a heavy sound on the whole than the laid back Catch a Fire. Not one I enjoyed enough for 5, but a good listen.
While I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the other Bob Marley and the Wailers Album I've reviewed so far, this was still a very good collection of songs. Particularly good is this album's version of 'No Woman, No Cry' as well as 'So Jah S'eh' and the title track.
Another excellent album from Marley and co, similar to but in my view just slightly better than his previous entry on this list, 1973’s ‘Catch a Fire’. Like that album, there’s a mix of political, religious and love themes across the nine songs, which are all at the very least really good. No duds here at all. Side one is slightly stronger overall, with its four tracks (including the original but NOT best version of ‘No Woman No Cry’) also being my highlights for the album as a whole, but side two is great as well. A strong 4 stars.
Classic conscious reggae
I used to absolutely LOATHE Bob Marley. Part of it was just that I associated him with the most annoying parts of stoner culture, part of it was just that he was overplayed in the 90s, and part of it was just that when I was most exposed to his music was at a time when all I really cared about was loud, crunchy guitars. I have a lot more patience for him now, and I don't mind this at all. I might even go so far as to say that I enjoyed it. I listened to this twice. I might put it on next time I'm making a big salad. If I don't derive a full four stars worth of enjoyment, I do recognize four stars of artistic merit.
C'est super le reggae tout de même !
Reage what else
This album just feels like summer from the first note. Great 4 run opener of songs starting with the great Lively Up Yourself, but the highlight for me is Them Belly Full. It is amazing how he makes revolutionary songs sound so beautiful. It has a few big hits and some good deep cuts.
I mean it's hard not to have a good time. Such a vibe but I'm unlikely to put on the whole album rather particular songs.
Æ like reggae, i små doser. Så et album innimellom e helt perfekt mengde, og det her gjorde mæ glad. Tommel opp!
8/10
i listened to it. i liked it. hard to say much though. therapy day, rough day.
Bob marley is always a perfect listen especially on sunny days :)
Pleasantly surprised. A lot of reviews mention that reggae just doesn't have much sonic variety, and that is what I felt when I was assigned "Exodus" by Bob Marley. Is Bob Marley just a "greatest hits" artist for many of us, I thought? (NOTE: I've enjoyed my share of classic reggae in my day but rarely in full-album form.) But as I said, I was pleasantly surprised. I felt like this album had more range than expected, and I really enjoyed it. Plus it is lyrically interesting, as it includes some songs that yearn for freedom and songs that lament lost love. It opens with four strong tracks in a row, you are likely familiar with at least 2 of them. Relax and enjoy. I did. There's a good chance this deserves 5/5 from those who understand the genre better but I'll go with a strong 4/5 for me personally.
There is something incredibly liberating by facing the challenges of the day with such exuberance and musical joy. Even Talkin' Blues has an undercurrent of hope. Additionally, the musical joy isn't a denial, and it isn't false. Bob Marley and the Wailers capture the joy through a hope that there is something beyond the pain, oppression, and challenges faced. Very refreshing!
Bob Marley is one of those artists whose influence goes so far outside the limits of an LP that assessing the record is difficult. Giving this one a four because I already know it doesn’t move me as much as Exodus… but damn I’m glad the man and his music existed.
This lowered my cortisol after an insane day. So chill. A solid album
That could be the first time that I've actually listened to the album in its entirety and loved it. Guess I'm a sucker for reggae even though it was never on my radar when the album came out. I was 13 at the time living where you would never have heard this album. My 13 year old loss.
There’s enough here for an enjoyable listen. And there are a few songs I’d come back to (besides the hit off the album, “No Woman, No Cry”).
Great beach side type music
Love
Pretty good, chill album. Nothing all that special, but enjoyable.
I’m not a big reggae fan, with the exception of Bob Marley. He truly was one of the greats. The social commentary is just as relevant now as it was in the 70’s.
For an album in a genre that's frequently accused of being repetitive, there's a fair amount of variety in the instrumentation. It's all anchored around the standard reggae beat, of course, but everything surrounding that anchor point sounds distinct on each song. For example, the blissful guitars and harmonica solos on Talking Blues, or the gentle horn sections on So Jah S'eh, or the organs on No Woman No Cry. There's a clear formula at play, but the formula works, creating an inviting and laid-back, but deceptively layered atmosphere. As a vocalist, Bob Marley has an easygoing charisma that instantly pulls you into this atmosphere. He has two primary focuses as a songwriter: sensual love ballads and pointed political commentary, both of which he pulls off with straightforward and thoughtful lyricism. This album works well as background music, but rewards active listening too, which is a balance less talented artists struggle to achieve in the way that Marley and his band did.
Reggae done by the best - a mellow fusion of genres with socially conscious lyrics
Amazing vibes. My first Reggae album on the list certainly didn’t disappoint. Bob’s butter voice mixed with the bluesy and soulful bass is perfect. The trumpets, saxophones and harmonicas on some songs add so much to the songs. Really liked No Woman, No Cry. Natty Dread and Revolution
Reggae is not my favourite genre, but Marley is clearly the best in that genre. It's a decent listen
I don't usually listen to raggae but i certainly can say this is a good album.
Liked it
I have a feeling this is not the absolute best album but it was still quite good
it's great but I felt it was dragging for me at the end. 4
I really like this album for what it is. Would this album do as well as it did if it were released today? Probably not... but this is really enjoyable and uplifting nevertheless. I can see why, around this time, Bob Marley was as commercially successful as he was. He not only promotes such upbeat music that people could dance to, but he also incorporates important messaging, like 'Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)', about unrest when the basic needs of the poor are ignored. Vocally, I really enjoyed this album, with the groove of the tracks really being carried by Marley's vocals. I think that one of the most important parts of these tracks is the backing vocals and harmonies. Without these, I think the songs would fall quite flat. It also gives a sense of unity in music that promotes this kind of vision. The instrumental is always going to be a highly praised and brought up element of Bob Marley's music, as the Reggae style is known for its different sounding style, utilising off-beats and steel drums. I think that this is one of the strongest parts, as there is never a dull point... I could probably listen to this entire album as an instrumental and keep my interest. I love the way they incorporated a drum machine into the track 'So Jah S'eh', combining an electronic element to the traditional Reggae style. This isn't the best album I've listened to, but I can really appreciate the craft of this album for what it is, and I think that the message and feel that they wanted to put across was achieved quite successfully. I'm now going to start adding, if I remember, a new category to my album reviews, and note down my favourite lyric. Favourite Lyric: 'Cause puss and dog they get together, what's wrong with loving one another?' ('So Jah S'eh') Favourite Tracks: Bend Down Low Talkin' Blues Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock) No Woman No Cry
Loved it
A solid album. Another commenter associated reggae with summer barbecues and couldn't get into it. I think they missed the point of this one. It has clear themes of protest and faith.
fine
A great album to listen to on the patio with warm breeze and some cold beers; the islands feel within reach. Don't be fooled, however, into thinking this is just light, island-inspired fun, because like always, Marley brings a serious message to his music.
Great introduction to this tool. Different versions of some well-known tracks. Sounds clean, and great example of Bob's beautiful voice. Certainly feels like a classic album. Killer basslines and groove (Them Belly Full) Interesting Wikipedia read about Trenchtown in Kingston, birthplace of Bob Marley Wiki article linked to articles about Judaism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_divorce_coercion_gang
Ta bien
Very good but not the best of Bob Marley's many albums.
Такая жизнерадостная вещщщь
Not his best, but I like Bob Marley
Fantastic vibe and production. Really liked the sound but also thought it dragged just a tad.
Finally, a Bob Marley album. I’m pleasantly surprised to see this album. I expected Exodus. Rebel Music, Them Belly Full and So Jah S’eh are my favorite songs on this record.
What a fun hang. I can't see myself going back to this often but as background music it's up there with the best around.
Great stuff, but I prefer a rawer reggae sound. I do appreciate that this is something more than that, but sometimes it's almost too chill.
stellar album all around. the front runner being 'no woman no cry', but honestly the recorded version is really overshadowed by the live version. that said, i can't believe that other songs off this album aren't included on greatest hits cd's. 'lively up yourself', 'them belly full', 'rebel music', and 'natty dread' are all fantastic. this album is truly great, but sad that its greatest song isn't as good as it is live.
Had a good time with this one. The other non hit songs were more catchy than the last bob album we had.
Man do I love Bob Marley. Almost all 5 star albums from him on this list. I am going to deduct 1 star for the studio version of "No Woman No Cry" rather than the live version.
Mellow, fun, enjoyable
Classic reggae record. I still don’t know if reggae is my fav genre in the world but Marley is certainly the cream of the crop
nMy second Bob Marley album in three days, lets go!!! Not quite as good as Exodus, but that’s a high bar anyway. This was still a really solid album. “Talkin’ Blues” was cool, hearing that blues influence worked really well mixed in with the reggae sound. “No Woman, No Cry” is a banger as always, and the whole thing had a cool, laid back feel without getting boring. Favorite song: "No Woman, No Cry"
4/5
yes.
'Natty Dread?' More like Natty Good. I don't know what I'm talking about. I do like Bob Marley and I do like this album. Top tracks: "Lively Up Yourself," "No Woman, No Cry," "Revolution," "Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock)"
Reggae wouldn’t be my go to listening music, which made exploring this album so much fun. I was impressed by how technical and well constructed the music was, it was at times quite profound. Them belly full but they hungry and Rebel Music both took the top places of the album for me with their creative and semi-psychedelic instrumentals.
good but not catch a fire good
Funnily enough, I was actually listening to this album the day before the generator picked it for me. I've been familiar with Bob Marley & The Wailers for awhile, but I had never listened to a full album (besides the Legend compilation) before yesterday and I was immediately impressed by the flow of both this album and Exodus. This one has some blues inspiration in its sound and I was loving it. I'm excited to listen to more of their stuff and I hope there's more reggae on the list because I'm definitely a novice in the genre.
So cohesive and groovy Favourite track: So Jah S'eh
Expected a mid rating from osmosis, but it was a really entertaining listen despite cultural familiarity
(5/7) groovin'
Goeie Marley-plaat, mss beetje eentonig bij momenten
fire ma geen ultra bangers hier 3.5
Another reggae album! This one felt more expansive and just did more with the genre. This was also my first Bob Marley album so I'm super excited to have heard his popular songs with fresh ears (3.5-4)!
The first half of this album is golden, I would've tore up that A side had I been a youthful music nerd in 1974. Maybe it's the day, getting past the second half of this album has been difficult. Regardless the hurdles of a work day, every time the record started over with Lively Up Yourself, I felt it, it's a harsh obvious transition that marks the beginning of the record. I think I particularly dislike the tracklist ending on the bonus track. It feels like indirect homophobia, and the album feels better, stronger, ending at Revolution. 4.1/5
Another solid album from Bobby Marls.
Very chilled, great talent, thx
Good album
Bob wanted to bomb a church, mon?
Top
Easy listening while working. Would listen again. Also would be good to have as a vinyl at home. Songs are all similar. No high nor lows to mention. No Woman No Cry is a lot different in the original version than the more known live version.
summer record
Of course he wasn’t real reggae. Whatever that is. I note he didn’t write the best song, but he’s got a strong legacy. I prefer other reggae performers: Peter tosh's Johnny B Goode is a masterpiece for example. Nonetheless Marley is the superstar for a reason.
Tror jeg må gi reggae som sjanger en ny sjanse (UB40 telles ikke). Orgelet funker også veldig bra her
Lively Up Yourself - 3/5 Woman, No Cry - 5/5 Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) - 4/5 Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Road Block) - 4/5 So Jah Seh - 4/5 Natty Dread - 4/5 Bend Down Low - 3/5 Talkin' Blues - 3/5 Revolution - 4/5 Average score: 3.8/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Undeniable. I should revisit when relaxing.
I don't listen to much reggae these days, but once upon a time ... and this is a classic (but not my favourite)
Very cool and enjoyable, especially the A-side. Liked the background singers and the occasional wahwah guitar. Minus one star because musically there wasn't much new on side B.
Perfectly timed
Good album, musically well done.
clasico de regae con marley no falla
Good, mind blowing when I first listened as a teenager, brings back some cringe memories. Good album tho
Overall a good listen with no skips. No Woman No Cry not as good as the live version but still great. Title track is a standout. Not enough great songs to get a five but a solid listen
Meh... this is Marley 101. It's just a straight up classic album. It's brilliant. No notes.
Never listened to a full Reggae album before, but I enjoyed this one
This one was decent. Would listen again even though I did not recognize many songs. 4 stars.
I havent really explored reggae before (had to even google how to spell it, haha), but I thought it was very enjoyable and easy to listen to.
7/10
This is important because it's the first album Bob Marley did without the Wailers, aka Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. Back when I was buying all Bob Marley's albums I remember thinking that for me, this one was on of the weaker entries in his catalogue. That wasn't to say that it was bad--almost all the studio albums, and many of the compilations of the earlier singles are great. I just found this one to have more filler than Rastama Vibration or Catch a Fire. Lively Up Yourself, Rebel Music and Them Belly Full are classics. I always preferred the live version of No Woman No Cry to this album version, but it's still a good track. So Jah Seh is a groove and the title track is decent. But some of the next few tracks, Bend Down Low and Talking Blues, for example, have a filler vibe to me. For me, he hasn't yet found his solo vibe here in a way he would on subsequent albums. Probably I'd only rank Confrontation lower than this album, or maybe Uprising. As a hardcore Marley fan, I'm giving this a four but that's mainly based on the strength of the first four tracks and Revolution.
Overraskende godt
Great album. Fav song: No Woman, No Cry
rahhhhh i love you bob always a vibe favorite song: them belly full
Good essence
Terrific Bob Marley
Honestly this is a party I was pretty late to, but I discovered how amazing these classic Marley albums were only a couple of years ago. Great vibes and musicianship, even on lesser songs. This original studio version of No Woman is interesting!
8/10. another classic. can never go wrong with marley.
I liked the different versions of songs I knew on this album ... was a good one.
This was obviously a joy. But I did think it dropped off in the second half a little. Those first three tracks are brilliant. Then Belly Full probably one of their best. Catchy. Important. I realise I'd never actually heard the original studio recording of No Woman, No Cry before (only live) and it's surprisingly quite simple and stripped down musically. But on second listen there's still lots to enjoy on the second half, especially Talking Blues. Wanted to like it more, but definitely a 4.
Yeah, I mean, that shit smooth. Massive vibes and really awesome guitar solos. Incredible instrumentation across keys & organs & harmonicas. Bobby gonna bob Impressive feat of dynamics
I feel really carefree and somehow relax listening to this album, like no care in the world even i have an exam in couples of hour. The last song was a bop for sure
3,5
The powerful bass lines, plucky guitars and brass sections give the perfect platform for Marley’s fantastic lyricism & vocals on this album. And as with most Bob Marley albums, I am immediately transported to a beach bar somewhere tropical, a power his music has to make you really feel the songs. I'd say on this one - compared to Exodus and Catch A Fire - there are maybe 2-3 tracks that don't hit the heights enough for this to be a 10/10 album. But my god it's still brilliant. A strong 9/10.
It's Marley. Of course it's great. It also features my favorite Marley song, "No Woman No Cry"
Bob Marley has been such a prominent figure for my entire life, mostly as a poster on college dorm room walls, that I think it can be easy to forget how truly talented he was. This album is a whole vibe, front to back, and I can barely fault it. Will be returning to this one again in the future.
🌿🚬
This album is so summer! I really love it, its chill but also upbeat❤️
This lovely album, with its great vibe, invites the listener to slow down and find beauty in life. The songs are well developed and deeply soulful. It features an emotional vocal performance, blending funk and R&B elements into its reggae core. I found myself forgetting about the stressful things in my life and simply nodding along to the rhythms. My favorite song is "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)".
Another Bob Marley album in just a couple weeks… kinda sounds just like the other one.
If you don't like reggae, this won't make you like it. Also: if you don't like reggae, *why not*? The word "vibe" was meant for this sort of album - steady, positive, sometimes strident ("Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)"), always soothing in the best ways. And for as many live versions as I've heard of "No Woman No Cry," the studio original, with Jean Roussel's Hammond organ, will always be my favorite. Also: we need more Biblically literate rock stars who don't suck at being rock stars - is that too much to ask? (Yes, Mr. Hewson, I see your hand up.)
Muy bueno. Me sorprendió la profundidad instrumental. Volveré.
god
Listening to this album is a truly satisfying experience; it's a collection of top-quality reggae songs. This is evident in aspects such as the creative and understated drum rhythms and the groovy bass lines that perfectly complement the guitar arrangements, which feature clean tones but genuine feeling. They're even as good as Marley's vocal melodies, which are not only beautifully performed but also convey a very pleasant feeling to the listener. All this without mentioning the incredible harmonies performed by the backing vocalists, which complement each other perfectly, contributing significantly, as do the various horn arrangements. Taking all of this into account, it's a truly interesting and enjoyable listening experience, one of Marley's best albums and an essential album if you enjoy reggae.
There is nowhere near enough reggae on this list. This is a classic from beginning to end, one of the greats.
Natty dread talking blues no woman no cry am a do …hit after hit!
Bob Marley was a cultural legend. I didn’t enjoy this collection of songs particularly but his greatest hits: Legend was on for an entire summer in probably 93-94.
I didn't realize until listening to this album how many styles of music were wrapped up in reggae. It was an interesting experience and on the whole good.
Side A is very strong, with some great staples like No Woman No Cry, and the guitar work in Them Belly Full and Lively Up Yourself is phenomenal. Side B is mostly good with a few less impactful songs too. It ends on a strong note though with "Revolution".
pretty sweet tbf
8/10 Aún no se escucha la fuerza en la voz de Marley
Great as always. He has better albums but this is solid 4/5
Natty Dread by Bob Marley & The Wailers is my third Bob Marley album on this challenge, and I’ve enjoyed all of them so far. It’s not usually my go-to genre, but it’s such an easy and enjoyable listen, with really powerful and meaningful songs throughout. Like the previous albums, this is consistently strong. The opening two tracks are superb and set the tone straight away. The whole album is full of groove, a touch of blues, and lyrics that still feel relevant and impactful today. Favourite tracks: No Woman, No Cry is a beautiful song. Natty Dread is also a standout Least favourite tracks: Every track earns its place on the album Album artwork: An iconic Bob Marley cover
