Natty Dread

4.0 - Hadn't heard this Marley album before and initially anticipated muddy recordings like on "Catch A Fire" but thank goodness that's not the case with "Natty Dread." The tracks sound crisp and accentuate Marley's songwriting. I love the heavy vocal reverb, a Marley signature. This album's got a relaxed, lived-in feel that few other artists can achieve at Marley's level. A terrific record to tame an anxious spirit and to keep the calm, happy vibes flowing.

I could listen to Bob Marley \"wail\" for days at a time. His voice is just that iconic, and his songs are the right ratio of catchy to saying something. When you're in the mood for reggae, you can't do better than Marley.

Marley uses a very successful formula, but relies on it all too often. The uber successful no woman no cry is great, but the similarity for all the songs is just a bit too monotonous. Maybe it needs more cowbell?

I'm a reggae fan though don't listen to much. It is easy to feel the vibe and passion in the music as well as appreciate the power and meaning of his lyrics. Great album.

Ah man, always happy to see Bob's name pop up, I know i'll love the music, and listen to the album on repeat as I discover so many great album tracks. Loses 1 point as I realised how much greater the live track of No Woman No Cry is. Still genius.

So there IS a studio version of No Woman No Cry! I do like a bit of Bob. This particular album didn't do that much for me at first, though I got into the groove a little more with each listen. Might revisit one day.

I don't love a lot of reggae albums, but I love this one. Lively Up Yourself is a perfect song to start the album with because it works so well on its own, but it also gives them somewhere to go. Them Belly Full might be my favorite Bob Marley song. I think I like the original version of No Woman, No Cry better than the more famous version on Legend. I don't love every song on this album, but it goes by really quick and keeps my interest pretty well 4/5

Fill of classic Marley songs. The production on some of the later songs were a little less exciting but that might be that the classics were earlier on the record.

I don't really care for reggae, even if it is the great Bob Marley. It's nice to listen to on certain occasions, but I never find myself in the mood for it. It's a bit boring and repetitive for me. The songs are a bit too similar sounding. I found myself tuning it out half the time, so it's hard to focus on and appreciate. While it's not a bad record, I don't see myself returning to this anytime soon.

Bit torn on this one. I think I was expecting it to be better than it was so was maybe a bit down on it. It wasn't as good as Peter Tosh's album but it was good. Recency bias, it was better than the last couple so I'll give it a low 4.

Even if you don't know anything about Jamaican music, chances are you know Bob Marley. He's far and away the most popular Jamaican musician of all time. You can kind of understand why listening to Natty Dread. The musicians lock into these gentle grooves like they've been playing together forever. Marley has a knack for writing simple lyrics that evoke an idea while not actually saying a whole lot. The musical textures are as slick as whale shit. Put together, these attributes make Natty Dread accessible as hell. But for me, it comes across as protest music for the Benneton crowd. I'm sure Bob Marley & The Wailers were perfectly sincere about their music and weren't intentionally pandering to the lowest common denominator, but it sure comes across that way. Thankfully, compared to previous albums, Natty Dread is more focused, with shorter song running times, the arrangements are more varied, and the first two tunes, Lively Up Yourself and No Woman No Cry actually have decent melodic and rhythmic hooks. Still, even putting my personal distaste for this kind of mainstream reggae aside, over the course of even a relatively short 42 minutes, my eyes rolled up into my head with boredom.

Evokes great memories. Love me some Bob Marley.

Is it even possible to enjoy Bob Marley while not being high? Not that I enjoy his music in any way when I am. It's just soooooo boooooring. It's boring to the point that I get really annoyed. I listened to parts of the first 6 songs but I couldn't bare any of them.

Forty years ago, I would have pretended to like this. But I've never really enjoyed most reggae. This is no exception. It includes "No Woman No Cry", but it's not the live version that everyone knows. I didn't enjoy this at all.

I'm kind of a best of Bob Marley person. I get his cultural significance but I can't even get through Legend that often because it a) gets a bit samey and, b) often reminds me of some of the worst white boy weed smoking acoustic guitar types in my teens and twenties. Excited to check out the other stuff though, outside of what you expect to hear. Lively Up Yourself and No Woman No Cry are obviously a great lead out (though the version of the latter on Live at the Lyceum is better!) It continues fairly enjoyably, but does seem to stick to a 90bpm, fairly repetitive structure from song to song. Natty Dread switches it up a little bit and gets my interest back. Great horns on it. Then back to a lot of the same. I still think Bob Marley deserves his place in the firmament. His influence on Jamaican politics alone marks him out as a unique figure. I just feel like a lot of people get to him and stop with reggae, and miss Junior Murvin, Lee Perry, Horace Andy and Toots and the Maytals. He wasn't the best, he was important as hell though, but this album gets pretty bland, in spite of a handful of all time classics.

Really interesting to hear the first version of No Woman No Cry and see how much it's evolved over the years with so many covers. Rest of album is decent, but Bob Marley was just one of many great singers/songwriters in Jamaica at the time and has a far greater reputation than this material would warrant.

20th September 2021 Listened on the living room speaker while working. Quiet day. The whole album is a vibe, marley has a magical ability to transcend his music into a mood.

Bob Marley is classic although he’s songs all kinda sound the same

I'm all about positivity in music, and that's exactly what Bob Marley & The Wailers exemplify on this record, at least in tone. While managing to keep that funky, upbeat backbone that reggae is so widely recognized for, they tackle some serious issues on this record including poverty, political control, religion and Jamaican society. There are some moments that become slogs and you sort of lose focus on where the song wants to take you, but just getting lost in the jam is part of the fun. Half on the songs on this record stand up against Marley's best work, the rest sort of get lost in themselves. Overall, an above average album that I'd go back to listen to again. September 1, 2021 Not sure how I managed to get two Bob Marley albums in the first 30 days but I am not that into it. I think reggae is just not for me. I really only enjoyed "No Woman No Cry".

Vielleicht will Reggae ja auch gar nichts anderes sein? Nur kann ich auch zwischen dem Fehlen vermeintlicher Ambitionen und dem Fehlen von Qualität nicht unterscheiden. Bob Marley's ability to write feel-good music that is rich in cultural and political commentary make him one of the most iconic musicians of the 20th century. Natty Dread is a masterwork; my enjoyment of it was dampened only by the knowledge that his 1975 live London version of "No Woman No Cry" is vastly superior.

Good for listening to in the sun. I remember the wailers (sans Bob marley) playing at my local music festival - guilfest - and for their entire set there was just a sea of people bopping in time, even people just walking about not paying attention

I think that "Legend" and "Natural Mystic" are the only albums from Bob Marley that I've heard all the way through, and they are 'greatest hits' compilations. It was good to listen to an album that isn't a compilation. The one song I've heard before many times, "No Woman No Cry", wasn't even the version I'm most familiar with. My favorites from the album are "Lively Up Yourself" and "So Jah Seh". This album is right on the edge of 'I MIGHT listen to this again', so for today I'm going round up and say 4 stars.

Ein tolles Album, das bestimmt 4-5 Sterne verdient hätte. Leider dudelte es in meiner Jugend zu oft bei "Sit ins" bei Freunden im Hintergrund, sodass ich es etwas über habe.

Überhört, vor vielen Jahren hätte ich wohl mal mehr Sterne vergeben.

I struggle with Bob Marley. I am admittedly no reggae expert but to my untrained ears, musically a lot of this sounds like a lounge bar band pastiche of reggae, it's soulless at times. Sacrilege I know.

This is such an incredible listen. There isn't a single song that I skipped through in all my listens. There is a quality to Bob Marley's voice that reggae artists since have seemed incapable of emulating (and that all of the exaggerated imitations do absolutely no justice to). The album hinges on Marley's performance—the airy themes that might otherwise be a bit unbearable, the repetitions that could start the grate—but Marley never seems to fail. A truly incredible album. 9/10.

What the Straight White Man™️ Did to Marley’s legacy and reggae as a whole is unforgivable. This is an album of musicians at the peak of their craft, the tones alone across this are so sumptuous and warm and joy-giving.

Nice and chilled but hard to put it anywhere on par with the Legend compilation. Easy listening in the background, nothing more.

I've loved the Bob Marley I knew, but that was essentially just Legend, and a few other select tracks. This was a fun feel-good album that would go perfect on the background of a summer BBQ. A few hits to up the energy, and a lot of tunes that will fade into the background and keep the mood light. No Woman, No Cry was interesting - I don't think I'd ever heard the original recoridng? Sounds wat different, and I understand why the live version has become the standard....it's better.

Today I learned that I really, really, really do not like reggae. I'm sure this was an important album and all, but man do I not enjoy this. I'd rather listen to the Kid Rock album again than this one.

Pretty much the same thoughts as CCR. Love Bob Marley but it's definitely a style and the best songs have risen to the top over the years. Never heard the studio version of No Woman No Cry. That's interesting.

I’m not really sure what to make of the reggae genre. If you were to describe a chilled out evening and some tunes to suit, this would be the genre. The tunes are fun and the style is chilled, but the lyrics run deep. An all happy and fulfilling album.

2.5 | Confirma dos cosas que tenía muy claras. Bob Marley es el mejor compositor e interprete que el reggae tiene y el reggae no es para mí (o al menos no lo aguanto en dosis mayores a 5 minutos). Tiene canciones que musicalmente me pueden agradar bastante, el órgano tipo gospel en No Woman No Cry siempre me ha gustado, el blues en Rebel Music no lo veía venir, Bend Down Low cambia el ritmo y le pone algo de movimiento al disco. A pesar de todo y de que veo que es un disco muy bien hecho no le puedo dar más; el resto de las canciones con el sonsonete clásico del reggae que después de una canción simplemente no me pasa. Se siente como un disco más maduro que otras canciones que le conozco en cuanto a que todas las letras bastante llenas de politiquería y protesta creo bien realizadas. Me agradó aprender que en sus canciones normalmente registraba los derechos de autor a nombre ya fuera de familiares o amigos que le hubieran inspirado a escribir x canción, a manera de protegerlos y asegurarse de que siempre les quedara algo en caso de que su herencia se desmadrara, habla muy bien de él... aunque siga sin aguantar un disco completo suyo.

Hace algunos años vi un documental sobre como nacieron el reggae y el punk y su estrecha relación. Es sorprendente saber que el SKA es el género que creó estos 2 monstruos (y otros tantos en medio) tan distintos cultural y geográficamente. Ambos ritmos hablan sobre desigualdad social, represión, unidad del sector popular y cada uno con su sonido particular geográfico. El Punk crudo, recio, frío como la isla donde nació y el Reggae cálido, tranquilo, armonioso igual a la isla en donde nació. Cualquiera puede hacer canciones de protesta pero solo el reggae y el punk saben llevarlo de maravilla.

Pasa totalmente desapercibido. No es malo y quizá por separado y de una por una algunas canciones me gustan, pero como disco entero me cuesta trabajo darle atención.

I pretty much hate all Reggae, so even a 2-star rating is a compliment. This is clearly good for what it is, but I can't do it.

I liked this album. It started off strong with Lively up Yourself and No woman no cry. Probably considered to be a great album

not really my thing but still has very smooth vibes, great instrumentals, soothing, calm, jazz like tunes. would be a decent vinyl to have on in the background

I don't listen to much reggae, but I really enjoyed this. The vibes: present, the rhythm: strong, the Jamacia: yup. Favorite songs Lively Up Yourself and Talkin' Blues. This makes me excited for the possibility of more reggae on the list and I will be diving deeper into Bob Marley's discog. 6/8.

The fact that 'Family Man' of The Wailers has 41 children is a very amusing piece of trivia.

This is a pretty dang iconic album. It's a top-shelf cocktail of groove, blues, and blistering social commentary. Honestly, I'm at a loss for what to say about this album other than it's just damn good. It ticks all the boxes. It's iconic, in the pocket, vocals are on point, lyrics are heavy, production is excellent, and it's so thick with sheer musicality it practically oozes. Just a real fine record.

I don't have any particularly coherent thoughts on evaluating reggae. Still wrapping my mind around the genre traits. It's a chill album. Bob sounds utterly earnest.

Pretty much what I expected from Bob Marley, which is to say, pretty chill music thats fun to listen to.

I've never liked Bob Marley but listening to it now, the real problem with it isn't that the music outright sucks - it's that it's been hijacked over the years by champagne hippies who are all style over substance. Not my thing, but not as obnoxious as expected. It's slow, introspective and probably good to sway along to if you're stoned - there's that swing feel wankers describe as "chill". I'm not a convert and I'll still avoid beach bars in Asia because of it, but I should redirect my hate away from Bob himself haha. 2/5.

This was an album of great transition for Bob, he had split with his childhood friends and original Wailers, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. Bob's influence over the band was becoming more and more pronounced and Tosh and Wailer decided that is not the direction they wished to go. The revamped band was now, for the first time, known as "Bob Marley and The Wailers" as opposed to just "The Wailers" thus solidifying Marley as the primary leader of the band. Bob truly took charge of the overall focus and direction of the group and wrote all the songs. In an interesting twist of fate and one of the best business moves in music history, he assigned the credits for many of his songs to his close family memebers and friends as a way to make sure they were taken care of financial, certain charities he believed in and supported were funded and as a way to avoid contractual obligations to his former publishing company, Cayman Music. Although this is a transition album of sorts, it sports some of his most memorable songs and one in particular that would be one of his defining moments, "No Woman, No Cry" which would gain much fame due to his incredible live performances of the record. He would introduce the "I-Threes" a female vocal group that included his wife, Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt. Their vocals addeded a wonderful compliment to Bob's on songs such as one of my personal favorites on the album, "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)". The writing on this album seems very personal and almost takes you on a journey through Bob's life in Jamaica and some of the obstacles he had to overcome. This record is also a canvas for Bob to infuse some of his Rastafarian beliefs and he does a marvelous job of this on songs such as "So Jah Seh" and the title track "Natty Dread". This album is almost like Bob saying "Here I Am, The Real Me" and he gives us a fairly detailed revelation of where his heart was and where his and the bands focus was now going to be. I believe this to be one of his most profound works and it's one of my personal favorites. It's only years after it's release and in particular after his death that I think many truly appreciated this album for it's greatness. There are many wonderful songs beyond "No Woman, No Cry" that make this a truly wonderful album and it gives it's listener a front row seat into some of the many tragic situations going on in his homeland and, indeed, many of the places dear to his heart such as the other island nations, Africa and United States. Bob Marley was a revolutionary in every since of the word and he would spend the remainder of his tragically short life fighting for the cause, "Revolution".

The original version of No Woman No Cry is pretty amazing compared the the more famous live version.
