Some good punk rock I’ve never heard before!

OK. Bit odd, and not good odd, in places.

p377, 1977. 3.5 stars New wave/pub rock classic. A little bit dated, but still holds up well, with some absolute bangers - Hanging Around, Peaches, Get A Grip, Go Buddy Go, Peaches - with the last two making up possibly the greatest double A side ever. On the downside, some surprisingly out of place guitar wankage (Princess of the Streets, Down In The Sewer), Not strong enough for a 4, hence 3 stars.

I believe that the beauty of this album resides in the fact that it sounds like the coolest 80's punk and new wave, but in 1977. I'm not sure if it could be considered the precursor of anything special, but for sure it influenced a lot of people that are much more famous for being precursors of this song style. In short, a very cool album with cool songs that sounds much more modern than 1977. This list is working like a charm for my objective of discovering new things that I barely knew that I want to discover.

I cant believe this wasn't on my radar before. This is just fun from start to finish. A really pleasant surprise. I look forward to hearing more from them. Seriously, how did I not hear them before today?

Rattus Norvegicus has raw punk energy mixed with psychedelic sounds that create a energetic and fun style which makes for an exciting experience.

Well, hello. Please come in. The Stranglers are one of the few bands I haven't heard that I hold no prejudices about, so this was as welcome as some alone time in the shower. I can't say it defied my expectations, because I didn't have any, but I can say it was a total thrill. Lively, tumbledown, and so assured. The drummer ain't afraid to lash out, the guitar's got that shark bite quality, and the vocals are, um, strangled. Meaty stuff. An eight-minute medley in ninth place is ambitious by usual standards, but these lads are bold as brass, sticking extended instrumentals that pack a whallop into the two opening tracks. Having listened to 2021's Bright Green Field recently, the maladroit funk and dorky vocals on 'Peaches' sounds like a clear reference point for Squid. Same lyrical brand of disaffected nonsense, too. So far up my alley the street lights are a mere pinprick.

I liked it as soon as I heard the line "Someday I want to smack you in the face" in the first song. I enjoyed the rest too, particularly the Peaches song 🥰

Mixed thoughts. Good early punk music, some good songs, some less interesting tracks.

Great album. Calling this music punk is somehow insufficient because the Stranglers were so much more clever and musically adventurous than many of their peers. But the sneering attitude is there for sure. I love the interplay of guitars and organ, which gives these songs a really distinctive sound. There really isn't another album like this. Any album that opens with the line "Someday I'm gonna smack you in the face" is always going to stand up and demand attention. This is brash angry punk at its finest, I enjoyed it.

Rattus Norvegicus by The Stranglers (1977) As Britpunk yobs who revel in comparing themselves to brown rats (Rattus norvegicus), these Anglo male sense assailants are down on everybody from ugly women to Jews. Misanthropic images and attitudes abound in this cinematic orgy of self loathing, morbidity, lust, and contempt. That about covers the lyrical themes on this album. But the music is well constructed and executed, like a (somewhat spare) combination of The Doors, Yes, Black Sabbath, and Jethro Tull. If you like innovation and compositional intricacy (I do), there’s enough on this record to sustain interest, especially in the bass lines, keyboard colorings, and (even!) backing vocals. If there is such a thing as prog punk, this is it. The Stranglers nicely sum up the Good, the True, and the Beautiful in the delightful song “Ugly”: “Don't tell me that aesthetics are subjective; you know all the truth when you see it, whatever it is.” Heavy, man, but sheesh! And wrapping up the symphonic closing track, we hear the most fittingly malodorous ending ever: “See you in the sewer”. 2/5

I was surprised. It is quite good. The sound is more aggressive than their latter hits and the melodies are catchy. A punk atmosphere with a wider sound than usual

12/22/2021 Today's Album: "Rattus Norvegicus" by The Stranglers - This album was pretty surprising for me. I went into it really not liking the vocals, and I will say the vocals are the biggest problem I have with this album. However, the instrumentation and performances really blew me away. Each instrument is on board to create this really solid groove on each track but are all ready to jump out of the mix for an outrageous solo or some cool embellishment. There's a ton of cool soundscapes explored on this record and each song feels super unique. I think I would have to only listen to this album as a complete piece because the vocals are almost too hard to get used to and just don't work in a "single" setting. Other than that, I just want to point out that Hanging Around is the second most popular song on this album and for good reason. It's nuts and deserves a listen from anyone who likes blues and jazz soloing. Overall, a really fun and interesting album but none of the songs are really able to be latched onto or enjoyed as a single track. Score: 6/10 Great effort and I would love to hear these instruments with different vocals. Highlights: Sometimes, Hanging Around, Peaches

Reminds me of the Doors minus the weird mysticism plus a nice beat. Second song sounds like proto-Strokes. A couple of the others remind me of the Cars or Talking Heads. Wire. I like this.

I wouldn’t term the stranglers as a punk band, they sound like the link between punk and new wave/new romantic that arrived a few years later. You can bet Adam and the ants had been listening to Get a grip on yourself at some point, stand and deliver has quite a few similarities

I quite enjoy The Stranglers, including this album. Not sure I'll put it on as a whole again though, it drags on just a bit and doesn't contain most of my personal favourites of theirs (Golden Brown, Always The Sun, Strange Little Girl).

Interesting first exposure the genre but a bit redundant.

Listening to these guys tells me so much about where bands like Rancid, Goldfinger, Screeching Weasel, etc. got their sound. These guys made organs punk rock staples.

New to me, the band, this album, and their music, so I had no idea what to expect (always a great way to experience any art). The overall sound is very familiar to me, so they could be a mix of a real reflection of late 70s punk/new wave/pop and their influence on other bands at the time and later. I find these songs quite catchy and they keep my attention most of the time. They play very well ('Choosey Susie,' for example, has some excellent guitar work), sticking together solidly through some staccato and fast-moving harmonies, and I like that I can usually hear what the singer is singing because the lyrics are often intelligent and witty. I bet this band was fun to see live in a small club at the time. Good music to move around to (I'm not much of dancer, but I could totally see myself bopping around to 'London Lady,' for example) and even though it has some real layers and textures, it's not inaccessible and it's not a downer. Real good stuff here, and I will listen to more of their music.

Shitty pub punk, few good songs

This was a painful listen. There was very little to enjoy and I couldn't listen past peaches.

Found some really nice songs to add to my rotation, but a lot of the other songs didnt do it for me

This was an alright english punk album. It’s nowhere near the Sex Pistols or anything but it sounds good at least. The lyrics on most of the songs certainly haven’t aged well. Fav songs: princess of the streets, peaches

I was introduced to the Stranglers as a wide-eyed innocent singing along to "Golden Brown" in primary school. This was my first exposure to their hateful roots, realising why the teachers didn't go with a leery, irritating track like "London Lady" or "Peaches." Semi-competent musicianship, nice scalic basslines, organ a novel addition to the standard punk line up. Very mid-heavy sound across the record, with the guitars crunched up and fuzzed out to a point that they just murk up the production. Nevertheless, a scattering of half-decent instrumental passages, particularly in "Down in the Sewer." What lets it down? They're sexist pricks. "Sometimes" is a diabolical track with skin-crawling sentiment that should have been the first and last we all heard of the band. I can't, in any good conscience, enjoy a record with the opening line "someday I'm going to smack your face", written and delivered for Cornwell's girlfriend without a hint of irony, commentary, persona... It's the dark, regressive underbelly of 1970's Britain, and it's a shame to spotlight it in an appraisal of music's 1001 "greatest" albums. Interestingly, the "1001 Albums..." book addresses the album's misogyny. Its response to including the album despite its ugly violence? "WeLl WhAt DiD yOu ExPeCt FrOm An AlBuM nAmEd AfTeR a RaT?" Probably something better and more enlightened than this. And less dull.

Punk rock. Bastante melodía

Another good album I'd never heard of. Apparantly I need to pay more attention to bands from the 70s. I heard clear parallels to bands like Franz Ferdinand and the Strokes, but I also appreciated the differences. The band didn't hold strictly to 2 minute verse-chorus-verse and they allowed themselves to jam and explore. By and large I enjoyed the album and I'd point to Sometimes, London Lady, Peaches and (Get A) Grip [on Yourself] as good tracks to check out to get a feel for it. I could have done without the track Choosey Susie, to behonest, give the overt depictions of sexual violence.

Sometimes and Peaches are highlights of this punk meets new wave selection. As is often the case with punk, I found the music too repetitive but it was interesting listening.

Crunchy punk fun

I'm not joking, yesterday I watched the digital short on Disney Plus about Ratattoullie and they talked about the Norwegian Rat and that it actually came from China. Pretty wild that that is the title of this album today. Now I need to think about lottery numbers. There is a song on here called down in the sewers that has some good rat music on it but the rest of the album was mediocre. I'm sick of these albums, especially the ones where the cover and name are so cool and the music is just bland and british

A decent punk album. A few songs stuck with me, but a lot of this felt same-y to me. If you're a huge punk fan, that's a good thing. To me, it was sort of like a less edgy Clash. I'll return to a few songs, but not enough for me to dig this album as a whole. Favorite tracks: Peaches, London Lady, Choosey Susie (love that title). Album art: I really like this one. I assume it's a band photo, but it's very cinematic. Funny I mentioned the Clash because these two chaps in the foreground clash completely. Love the colors and framing here. 3/5

At this point in this project I guess it’s established that classic era punk is not really my thing. Musically I found this kind of dull, the lyrics and vocal delivery typical of its genre and era. Is it really more than moderately dirtied up rock? Lou Reed just called it Rock and Roll and did it ten times better.

Sounded like Spinal Tap at times, but without the guitar solos. Surfy rock with some punk vibes at times. Pretty meh.

Great band, great sound

I love the rawness of early British punk as they incorporate other genres like prog, reggae, and synth. All the tracks are catchy and have memorable tunes. Nothing extraordinary but also has little wrong with it and otherwise a perfectly fine album.

If you like the blues scale played up and down you‘re about to get lucky. Otherwise the solos could get a bit boring maybe even annoying, because without them the song could be quite good.

A grim and atmospheric ablum sound. The swinging organ theme (as well as its jazz solos) and demented chorus add something to the song Peaches. (6/10) Favourite Song: Sometimes, Peaches

Right out of the gate with Sometimes I got a good cross between Billy Idol and Wall Of Voodoo. Rockabilly punk with overt brit accent. Actually varied and fun.

Peaches!!! Say no more. I didn't know this was the band so I'm so glad to be introduced. I really enjoy this album. It has a good punky vibe but it's the organ in the tracks that does it for me.

Late 70's British Punk keeps on giving. Excellent bass work, some creeping Doors-style organ-powered jams, and Down in the Sewer dips lightly into prog.

Punky n funky

Great 80s pop music sound. Good listen.

The bass on this one caught my attention from the very first moments. Really catchy lines that seem to carry the whole thing. Keyboards are cool in some parts and cheesy in others. A good listen but probably not something I’ll come back to a lot.

I am more familiar with No More Heroes than this record. That said, while I understand The Strangers' place in music history, there are hints of The Jam, The Clash, and many others on this record, but nothing on this record really does much for me to make it stand out above the output of The Jam or The Clash. It's not bad, but listening to it out of context, and well after I had done a good deep dive into UK punk rock, I'm left underwhelmed. 3*

I don't think I've every heard anything from or about The Stranglers. "(Get A) Grip (On Yourself)", and "Hanging Around" hinted at giving the band a second chance for a follow up listen, but it only felt like a hint. There were some tracks that I definitely didn't like. Another entry, where I'd like to know why they're on the 1,001. There probably is a reason, but it wasn't apparent from my first listen.

Odd band, plenty of misses. Preferred to see them live and this album does capture some of this.

I feel a little ashamed rating an album without at least giving it the decency of listening to its entire content. I then feel even more guilty for only giving it 2 stars. Alas, I am willing to wager $10million my review would still be the same even if I did force myself to endure the remaining three songs. I’m not entirely sure who actually listened to this album back in 1977 (or anytime since) let alone be voted into the best 1001 release of all time. I found it quite a hard listen even while at the same time acknowledging not all music will be to my taste. I get art and avant-garde but this is neither...it’s just songs made up of irritating vocals/lyrics repeated over boring up-tempo elevator music.

“Get a grip on yourself” has some great synth stuff. But this is definitely not what I was expecting. Doesn’t feel as punky as expected. Almost feels 60s ish rock. Maybe with extra synth. I’m giving this a 3 but I fully admit I didn’t pay enough attention. Sorry.

New wave punk rock, so cool! Attitude, rumbling bass, keyboards, all in a band! Gets me going. I like the drive of this album. This is the kind of nerdy hooligan music I can get behind. It's the right amount of edgy while also being fun. I like it a lot.

Psychedelic Punk würde man das wohl nennen, oder? Und damit natürlich auch direkt die Brücke zum Postpunk schlagen, in deren Fundament Stranglers sicher eine schöne Gedenkplatte für die Stranglers liegt. Insgesamt für mich: nett anzuhören, tatsächlich aber nicht aufregender als The Fall. 2,9.

it was okay, not my favourite but not the worst

Primer punto... el título me fascinó, no sé por qué, quizá solo me ha agradado siempre la notación en latín para las ratas pero me gustó; aún más cuando entendí por qué se llama así (more on this ahead). Dos, decía que son punk... suena realmente muy poco a punk, suena más a banda de garage con unos toques de psicodelia; ese órgano le viene muy bien a su música y está bastante bien manejado, incluso en las partes en que está casi rayando en copia de órgano de los Doors suena bien. Musicalmente solo puedo decir que es agradable, este "no punk" psicodélico que casi suena popeado y pegajoso. Eso es la música pero vaya que si hay más que decir... Por partes; no se qué tanta atención le pusieron pero tiene algunas letras un poco.... problemáticas para hoy en día. Desde el inicio tiene dulzuras como “Someday, I’m going to smack your face” o “I got morbid fascination, gonna beat you till you drop." Normalmente soy de dar contexto al tiempo en que se hizo la música y no tratar de imponer reglas o maneras de ver las cosas que no estaban patentes en su momento pero aquí va casi rayando en mi límite de lo que suena normal para la época y lo que suena realmente misógino sin importar el año. A pesar de lo anterior en verdad que la música te lleva a seguir escuchando; es realmente hipnotizante y bien hecha en su estilo tan sui generis. Las letras van mejorando y al menos no se estancan en los temas delicados aunque no los dejan del todo; tenemos desde canciones sobre la destrucción de Toulouse según Nostradamus, pero inevitablemente regresa de nuevo a lo que se siente como un ataque bastante directo a una periodista a la nada sutil "Making love to the Mercy Tunnel with a sausage." O sea vamos que del Me Too no se van a llevar un premio y si pones realmente en el Face que escuchaste este disco y te gusto una buena proporción de la gente te va a medio linchar. Por otro lado podría tratar de defenderlo un poco tomando en cuenta que todo el odio que escupe a las mujeres es en misma cantidad el que se echa a sí mismo. No trata de hacerse superior o decir que fuera mejor que toda la mierda que esta diciendo de otros. De repente, después de líneas tan líricas como “Is she trying to get out of that clitoris” en la segunda mitad la banda se vuelve francamente ambiciosa no solo en mostrar sus habilidades instrumentales sino también líricamente. "Ugly" es una dosis aun mayor de psicodelia que aperte cita el poema de Ozymandias de Shelley; después termina en un gran final con 'Down the Sewer' con los decididamente poco punk siete minutos que dura. Al borde del territorio del álbum conceptual, es una historia posapocalíptica de llegar a la gran ciudad a través de las alcantarillas y encontrar que la vida no es mejor que lo que había abajo. Un ratón de granja que se cuela en la gran ciudad solo para convertirse en otro rattus norvegicus rodeado de latas de coca-cola vacías. De verdad el final parece otra banda. Disco muy interesante, problemático en estos días, fuerte, decadente, exuda odio y frustración pero termina con un anhelo de poder levantarse más allá de la podredumbre y corrupción. No es un disco agradable, no es bonito, pero es muy muy honesto. Hacía rato que un disco no me dejaba pensando tanto, a pesar de escucharse musicalmente simple y pegajoso terminó siendo bastante más.

Fun punk

Kind of dreary and generic rock. Punkish?

I didn’t know quite what to expect with this. I read that it was punk and it was but heavy use of keyboard gave it a different vibe. Actually reminded me of the Doors in a few spots. 3 stars.

Goth rock "back in the day". That organ, though.

It's decent. Not exactly what I would call punk. Very early punk I suppose. Enjoyable to listen to.

Great

Started a bit slow. But then the guitar solo hit for "Hanging around" and it started to pick up and I enjoyed the guitar/keyboard from "peaches" but then it dropped back off for me. The singing isn't so great kind of talking and yelling with notnso much melody. The guitar is still solid through out the album and I enjoy most of the keyboards but some songs had some un needed 'noise like "ugly" and the 'ufo' sounds. The singing seems to lack flow in most songs which isn't my thing.

Musicalmente el disco me recordó algo a The Knaks, con un toque de The Doors. Por las notas acerca del disco en Wikipedia, parece ser un disco muy influyente en la escena del punk, además de tener letras muy profundas, pero simplemente no me gustó

3.5|Que álbum tan fuerte, la música es muy buena pero por las letras hoy serían linchados por grupos de feministas Fuera de ese tema tan delicado se me hace un muy buen disco

Muy curiosa mezcla de sonidos. Me gusto el mucho énfasis casi estilo Ray Manzarek de The Doors que tiene el teclado y los solos largos; la voz me sonó a Talking Heads o algo así y para llamarse a ellos mismos "punk" se me hace que tienen poco del sonido y estilo de esa era. Me sorprendió también lo larga que ha sido la vida activa de la banda, incluso ahora mismo haciendo un tour de despedida porque el tecladista murió de COVID.

I understand why people like Neil Young, but I don't particularly enjoy him, and listening to a full album of his music is a bit of a chore for me. There are certainly some things to like about this album, but, but, but 3/5

Women are objects and Jews are not people in the world of The Stranglers. I still have some reflection to do about why I'm okay with excusing this type of bigotry in other artists, but for now, I'll say that this shit put me in a bad mood today. Being a dick doesn't make you punk. Best track: Goodbye Toulouse

Interesting enough

This was oddly enjoyable. '70s punk has a totally different feel, yet is somewhat familiar to bands like the Ramones. I liked how melodic everything felt. A bit too much organ at times, but maybe that's just my preference. 4 stars.

1977: Peaches, Hanging Around

Two or three songs grabbed my attention to go "OH I like this". These songs were "(Get A) Grip [On yourself], Down in the sewer, and Go Buddy Go. The other's were all fine, but a little bit of just normal 80's punk.
