Reviews (page 11 of 13)
3/5. I get it. I’m not that much of a hard rocker though.
I am, in general, NOT a fan of Iron Maiden. So I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Usually I dislike the wailing operatic vocals and the pseudo-classical guitar harmonies. This is much rougher and punkier. Parts reminded me of Motorhead, early Metallica, Deep Purple - it feels like a rock band rather than an AI fed a copy of the Simarillion and a Bach symphony. It's not a 5 - if you wanted a great metal album you can find much better options - but as someone who thought he would hate it, it was a pleasant surprise. Lyrics arent the deepest, but hey, what did you expect. Would be 3.5 if this app did half points...
This is the second 80s metal album that I liked a lot more than I expected to. I really like the dual lead guitar that these guys do.
3 I don’t claim to be the biggest Iron Maiden fan, but having liked a lot of the stuff I’ve heard from the group, I was really looking forward to this album - and man, what a disappointment. Look, I know this is their first release, and so I wasn’t expecting it to sound like peak Maiden, but I was not at all prepared for the vocals to kick in and not be Bruce Dickinson. I totally forgot that the band had a different original lead singer, and let me tell you, it is definitely not the same experience. I get that the band as a whole is still very much finding their footing here, but I found Paul Di’Anno to be such a lackluster vocalist that the music always felt capped. Nothing about his voice feels particularly distinct or enjoyable, and as a result my favorite track here was probably Transylvania. Much like Black Sabbath’s debut, I understand that this was the start of a variation on rock music that was still being ironed out - and you can definitely hear traces of what’s to come - but I also hear a lot of generic and uninteresting rock tropes mixed in there. The slow parts of Remember Tomorrow and Strange World were both pretty dull (though you can definitely hear the influence upon Avenged Sevenfold with that lead guitar work on the latter), and Running Free felt like an out-of-place Southern rock song that could have come from a group like Molly Hatchet. Prowler and Phantom of the Opera are better tastes of the band’s style, but even then aren’t anywhere near as good as their later work. So, like the aforementioned Black Sabbath album, this is going to get a 3 from me - admittedly influential, but retroactively pretty okay in comparison to what came later.
Very influental album, but given how great 'Number of the Beast' is as a follow up this album's just not there in terms of quality.
3/5 Best: Strange World Worst: Charlotte the Harlot
3.5/5 Pretty good just quite repetitive to me
I never would have chosen this album to listen to myself (mostly because I hate that album cover), but it wasn’t bad at all! Not something that I would listen to on a daily basis, but I think it’s definitely something that would grow on me with time.
I liked this better than the black album, but it still suffers from some of the same problems (mainly repetitiveness). Good guitar playing. Self titled track was my favorite.
Songs are loooooong! 3
Funny to hear what was considered hard rock in 1980. Pretty tame. Guitar tone sounds more like punk. 2.5 stars; I’m rounding up.
It’s a pretty cool debut, but they had much more to show for in the years to come. Still enjoyable and features a few staple live tracks. 7 out of 10
- rockin! - harder rock than I would typically choose, but I could see a situation where it might work. - Phantom of the Opera is definitely best track (also by far the longest at over 7 minutes!!) - Is this album cover a loose reference to The Scream painting? - yeah, on the last track (Iron Maiden) and definitely ready for this to end.
Honestly the standard I hold all these types of metal albums to now is megadeths rust in peace and unfortunately this one doesn’t compare. It’s still not bad but it was just a half hour blur of 80s metal sounds with shitter than usual vocals in which nothing stuck out to me. Number of the beast was also definitely better.
Phantom of the Opera and Strange World are real bangers, but otherwise it wasn’t really anything that stood out as much. Feels like it holds a pretty high bar overall though, and I like Iron Maiden so a very strong 3 feels about right.
A classic metal album that inspired tons of later bands. They'd only get better from here.
AJ: 🤘🏻💀
Got boring near the end but still a classic
Dette er metal, verken mer eller mindre. Ikke helt min smak, dessverre.
Genres: Heavy metal Formed: Leyton, East London, in 1975 Run time: 8 songs, 37 min, 42 sec First thing to note is that this album is pre Bruce Dickinson. The instrumental sound (particularly the rapid-fire guitar work) of this album is still recognisable in later Iron Maiden music. Lyrically it is good, but I’m unable to get past the fact it isn’t Bruce. I enjoyed a couple of the tracks. Others were OK. I have read that most of these tracks have been re-recorded with lyrics by Bruce Dickinson. I wouldn’t listen to this album again, but I will listen to these tracks on whatever album they now appear on. My Rating: ***
Me gustó bastante.
Pleasantly surprised. Less ridiculous and unthinkly heavy than some of the other metal stuff that's come before. Not sure I'd play it much again but I wouldnt oppose hearing it in the right bar.
This improved my gym performance by 3 microns of a percentage
Metal! I think mac likes iron maiden. Not as metal as I anticipated. Not bad, I liked it. Definitely on the lighter side of metal. 7/10
better than I expected
Good guitar.. vocals and the rest arnt on par with some of their other work Reminds me alot of Def leppards pyromania....
It was okay. There are songs I enjoyed but overall, not something I would revisit regularly.
Surprisingly good for a pre-Bruce record. Enjoyed.
Not much going on really
Surprised myself at how much I liked this album and how many memories came back. Their album covers were all insane, but the music is just basically hair rock with a death wish. Pretty cool and was a definite breakthrough.
I've not been a fan of much of the heavy metal on the list. Iron Maiden is a pretty fun listen though.
I liked this album more than I thought I would. At times it ventures briefly into the cheesy 80s hair metal style, but never overly so. I liked many parts of this…Strange World stood out. I can hear it as an influence on Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters…the tempo, the ascending and descending rhythm line, and the harmonics of course. I like good portions of the speedy metal too.
Nice, to the point, easy listen. Not that many standouts for me.
Apparently I like pre-Bruce Dickinson Iron Maiden. I'll be ok with my husband playing this in the car on road trips.
Alright but not spectacular.
Pleasantly surprised at this one. Classic metal.
I like Iron Maiden this album is about what I expected from them. Classic tunes they make me feel like I burning a huge pile of leaves in the fall
Cool that this blends punk and metal, although they’ve said that wasn’t what they were trying to do and they hate punk, so I guess it was a happy accident? I don’t find these songs to be that memorable though, mostly just testosterone fueled guitar pyrotechnics for teenage boys. Phantom of the Opera is pretty good and some of the first few tracks are decent.
Enjoyed listening but not sure I’ll revisit
meh
Inoffensive, but not particularly exciting for the most part. I've never been keen on early Maiden, having none of the catchy vocal or guitar performances that they would become known for, but they have some moments. Remember Tomorrow was the only song I could remember liking beforehand, but now I'm adding Transylvania to the "Good early Maiden" list The meanest thing i can say is that this came out the same year as British Steel, Ace of Spades and Heaven and Hell, and I'm astonished Maiden didn't immediately disband out of embarrassment.
Iron Maiden is the debut album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden, and it was released to critical and commercial success. It was a landmark release for heavy metal and remains a fan favorite album. The music was primarily metal, but did have influences from punk and progressive rock. I'm not normally a fan of metal music, but this debut album was really good. It was entertaining to listen to because of its raw aggression. I'll keep an ear out for other Iron Maiden songs going forward.
Good album, but i like their other album better
Slaps at times
Not as good as the later Iron Maiden stuff I heard but still good. There’s some songs which are just solos that are quite good, and solid riffs get the hand banging going. My main gripes are Bruce’s vocals and sound quality - thankfully that’s improved in later albums. Fav tracks: Phantom of the Opera, Transylvania, Charlotte the Harlot, Iron Maiden Worst track: Prowler 6.5/10
Never been a maiden fan. I mean, it’s really the first time I’ve listened to a full album. I’ve heard maybe 3 of their songs prior. Musically it’s really great, tight licks and superb drumming. Vocals are over the top. I enjoyed whilst showering. Out of 5 stars I give it a 2. 👍🤷🏻♂️
Solid metal LP – not as dynamic as their other album on the list, but given the selections I've been going through recently I will take any well-done guitar-based album I can get.
Decent. Highlights: Prowler, Remember Tomorrow, Phantom of the Opera, Strange World (guitar solo)
It was interesting to hear old-school Iron Maiden for the first time. I got a strong punk vibe from the album, and I could definitely hear the early metal influences that fully blossomed into the "classic" Maiden sound later. That being said, this sounded a little raw to me, and I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would. Solid musicianship though!
The guitars sing better than the vocalist. Mixing is pretty bad for a commercially released album. Really great riffs throughout.
Not my vibe - good, but just nothing that I'd hear again.
I wasn't expecting this to be as theatrical as it as. That's not a bad thing, but I prefer lyrics more grounded in reality, myself. They have a wild musicality with amazing guitar riffs and good vocals, though. I can see why they have so many fans, but to me it was just all right I guess. Definitely got me to headbang for a bit, though, lol.
I didn’t think i would like this album one bit. I was wrong. I got me hyped i loved hearing that guitar and I think I’ll use some of this for workout motivation.
Genuinely not as bad as people make it seem to be. This was my introduction to Iron Maiden and it's definitely less heavy than I expected but still good nonetheless. Nothing too special, but I like the guitar and bass riffs. Fave track(s): Prowler, Strange World
Listens: 2 Enjoyed: it's okay Definitely preferred the more melodic tracks - just don't think heavy metal is for ke
I've listened to Iron Maiden 7 times, but never this record. Artist #1498 pre this album It's average yeah? Surely there are better Iron Maiden albums.
woah. a blast from the past. i think this is one of their rawer albums
Good heavy metal, but I prefer punk.
Not my favorite album of theirs. Vocals were flat and didn’t much like the guitar work.
Never was really into hair metal. But i mean I liked some part of this album wasn't terrible!
Better than I thought - not that much hair metal. The Maiden were prevalent on denim jackets when I was young, and I thought they were for thick people. This wasn't anywhere near as crap as some of the stuff coming up on this project
I like this record but it doesn’t leave a very memorable impression on me. I’ve listened to it prob 10 times and I like it, but it fails to jump out at me. Its influence on a lot of music I love is important, but its just not my favorite.
The Iron Maiden album by Iron Maiden including the song Iron Maiden
My rating is definitely colored being more familiar with the Dickinson era of Maiden. This record is solid, but having known and loved Maiden for a while, it just sounds like a band almost there. Instrumental work is solid, just missing something. Favorite tracks: "Prowler", "Transylvania"
6.5
This one is the 4, # of the Beast is 3, mixed up
It's fascinating how this album is classified as metal but is so much later than much of the newer metal albums. The progression is interesting.
Not their best but still some solid Maiden
- Prowler is a very good opener - Remember Tomorrow is a beautiful track, I love it - Running Free was ok - Phantom of the Opera was really good - Transylvania was pretty good - I REALLY liked Strange World. It gave me a King Crimson vibe and I really digged it. - I like Charlotte the Harlot, sounded a lot like a Guns N' Roses song. - placeholder for last track
Surprisingly, I didn't hate this like I thought I would. I was expecting typical death-metal type stuff, but this was more nuanced. Lyrics were still pretty comical like most of this genre. 2.5 stars, rounding up to 3 because I feel generous today.
3 stars! Rawk!
Solid, nothing earth shaking, but Solid midfield
Heavy metal is what I would’ve said if you had asked me what genre of music iron maiden was yesterday. I still agree with that today but after listening I now have to include hints of speed metal, punk/Post punk, and (horror of horrors) progressive rock. I say horror of horrors, because I do not consider myself a fan of progressive rock. I also am not really sure what progressive rock is, except that I know it is called Prog rock, and I do not like that term at all. (And no, I am not going to learn anymore about Prog Rock right now for fear I might like more of it.) I only learned that they are considered progressive because I looked at a review to make sure that I wasn’t totally missing the mark when I detected the hints of speed and punk. Putting my hangups aside, I thought it was a fine album. I did not mind the instrumental Transylvania, and became invested in Charlotte the harlot. Remember Tomorrow was my fave. And kudos to them for existing so that Wheatus could talk about them in Teenage Dirtbag and then One Direction could do a fantastic cover of it.
Some okay early power metal, goes very fast and has great guitars and bass. The songs are a bit samey for my taste
Prior to Bruce joining the band, Iron Maiden sounded much more like a 2nd rate bar band. Amazing what a talented singer can do.
¨3
An oldie but a goodie. Great rocker that aged well
It's a nice enough album. Deep metal. I just can't get really into it.
what a throwback! almost forgot how much i used to listen to iron maiden
I am not sure why this album was chosen. Of the first few albums, "Number Of The Beast" is vastly superior. I see it's on the list too, so that's good. The vocals... they're not bad, but I just kept thinking of how Bruce Dickinson took the pieces to a higher level. And some of the lyrics... "Charlotte the Harlot?" Really? (To be fair, I heard the 1988 version and it was a loooong eyeroll from me then, too. The vocals were clearer here, though.) You can hear all of the components to come in the later albums hear, but I just keep coming back to the vocals. The second album "Killers" actually is better, they really matured and evolved with his vocal stylings. But we're talking about the first album, aren't we? SO just going off of this one, I'm going to give this a bit lower, just because of the later albums (even the second album shows more of a progression).
Do I actually like Iron Maiden? Well, maybe the first half.
Enjoyed the metal. Not the best metal out there, but some pretty good stuff.
I would realistically give like a 2.6 for this. Better than expected
Absolutely bonkers. You know what you're getting. Pretty good fun though. Edges into taking itself too seriously at points, but a lark apart from that.
Interesting
3.5
Better than I thought it was going to be. Never been a Maiden fan but it was decent. The heavier side of hair metal, these guys have a cult following.
This was a good listen, quite gentle for Iron Maiden I thought. I wasn’t overwhelmed though so a high 3*
The sound is mostly there! Has a couple straight bangers (Phantom, Iron Maiden), but not ESSENTIAL like Piece of Mind or Number of the Beast.
3.5
In their debut, they served as one of the most influential metal bands of the era, sounding very much like earlier heavy metal but incorporating greater speed, energy, and aggression influenced by the punk movement, and alongside Motorhead would bring about the 80s thrash metal movement. But besides "Phantom of the Opera", I don't think any of the other tracks demonstrate what would make Iron Maiden so incredible by the time they release Number of the Beast. I wouldn't say they're bad or boring... in fact, I find most of them to be fun and full of energy. But they don't pull your attention the same way that "Phantom of the Opera" does with its rich and complex structure. Half of them are a bit forgettable. Still, I did enjoy the whole album, and it's short enough with the right number of songs for most people to bear through whether they like the songs or not.
goes hard
Tola.
Not familiar with this record. Pretty strange hearing Maiden without Bruce Dickinson's voice, but the galloping rhythms and frantic bass are pretty unmistakable. Not bad overall; not my favorite Maiden record though.
Nothing about this really stuck out to me. I'm disappointed. I thought I'd like it more. 3/5
Loud and fun but not my thing. I can see why it’s popular.
An okay metal album. I didnt get bored or anything though. It is just not that exciting for someone lives in 2022
Vocals weren't very strong but Running Free, Phantom of the Opera and Transylvania make up this album. Really love the guitar and bass in this
The covers have long been the stuff of my nightmares, and I imagine this was pretty heavy stuff for its time, but it does feel a tiny bit ... softer ... than my expectations.
Right at the gate you know what kind of album this is going to be. I’ve never listened to Iron Maiden. And the biggest revelation to me is how xenoblade chronicles battle music sounds soo similar to the frenetic high energy guitar solos. Overall I liked it more than I thought I would. I'd consider listen to their top hits after this album.
As with most of the metal here, better than expected.
It was alright. I'm only slightly familiar with Iron Maiden, so I always thought they were a bit heavier. The album cover is hilarious though. It was probably cool in the 80s, but now I look at it and I think that the creature is something that would chase Shaggy and Scooby only to slip on a banana peel and fall into a fridge, comically turning into a big ice cube, just in time for Velma to identify the rambunctious rascal as Jeff Jungly, the lovable goof that the gang met outside the haunted hotel, posing as a donut-loving security guard. Fred takes out a large hair dryer and melts the ice around the evil scoundrel's face, as Jeff Jungly utters his famous line: "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!" The episode ends with Scooby's iconic "rehehehe" laugh. So in summary, this album is a 3/5.
Not to hard. Really enjoyable.
very noodly doodly
Underwhelmed by this to be honest. I'm sure we'll get more Iron Maiden in the next 900 albums, but this just didn't have as much to offer as the Judas Priest and Black Sabbath albums we've had. Maybe that's unfair (as I think this is older than both of those), but it just didn't grab me in the same way that they did. Nothing really wrong with it, but nothing particularly exciting either. 3/5, would've considered giving it a 2 but it definitely doesn't belong with Kid Rock!
No Bruce Dickinson means this isn’t a definitive Maiden album. There’s hints of ‘70s punk but not enough for me and the songs that are here aren’t as strong as what’s to come.
I grew up surrounded by jean jackets with Eddie patches of all sorts of variations...I would listen with my friends but Iron Maiden has never really been my thing...don't know why, they seem to have everything right there for me but for some reason it never really resonates with my. I get it I guess, but just not my jam.
Really solid hard rock album here. I can definitely hear the foundation for their more polished later albums. Vocalist is pretty rough though. Thank god for Bruce Dickinson
It’s Iron Maiden!
Lots of influence from earlier acts, like zeppelin, and sabbath. Sounds like it influenced later bands as well.
I’d completely forgotten how great Di’Anno sounds! Best: Remember Tomorrow / Phantom of the Opera / Strange World Worst: Running Free / Transylvania
Pretty decent, not my jam. Listenable, wouldn't turn it off, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen. 2.5/5 but giving 3
There’s a lot of interesting stuff happening on this album but this kind of thing just isn’t for me.
Great album
They sure can play.
Bit heavy for me but some good tracks
7/10
Way better than other metal on this list, primarily because one can hear the playing, which isn’t to say it’s actually worth one’s time.
Pleasantly surprised by this. I was bracing myself for Bruce Dickinson's cod operatic high notes. I didn't know Maiden's first two albums had a different vocalist. Muddy production, but a fun metal album. Good riffs, dubious lyrics, parent offending cover art. What more do you need?
Much more paletable than i thought. Singer is a bit shit though.
Better than I was expecting. More punk and rock that theatrical metal.
Pretty boring compared to later Maiden - the ingredients were all there but they haven’t figured out how to bake the right cake yet.
Not bad. Cover art 4/5
this album generator has made me realize i'm a fan of heavy metal, but this album didn’t impress me, really. it certainly wasn’t bad but it was just good, not great or amazing. the guitar work is easily the best part about this album! everywhere i turned, the guitar sounds were beautiful and heavy! the guitar definitely delved into the progressive genre but i loved it.
This album was okay...decent for a first album from a band that was integral in shaping and defining the sound of 80s metal. I can see where this album was setting the stage for greatness to come in the form of their more renowned albums. Overall though, it didn't wow me.
I know this is blasphemy to some, but I feel like this is an average album by an average band. I'm just not impressed. My bad yo.
I really expected to give this at least a solid 4. Unfortunately, it's just not quite there. There's nothing terribly wrong with the album. It's relatively fun and energetic even if all the tracks sort of run together. The biggest issue is that there are no hits. They got a vibe but no bangers. Much like Led Zeppelin's first album, you can feel the shape of things to come. The seeds of "Number of the Beast" are here but, with this freshman album, they're just not quite there yet.
6/10. Decent rock album. Some of the songs are quite internally repetitive.
6/10. Better than expected, but not memorable
Not nearly as traumatic as I thought it would be. I'm usually totally adverse to Iron Maiden, they're too shrieky for me, both vocally and musically. This is a decent album though, and barely a shriek to be found.
First entire Iron Maiden album I have listened to. It was OK, but not enough that I would consider going back for more
I see the influence this album has, but it's not really my thing. I did like a couple of songs though even so.
Not crazy about it, but I definitely enjoyed it more than I expected from the album cover. 5/10
I don't think I've ever heard an Iron Maiden song... I like it. 80s glam metal rock is more my vibe than the other types of 80s rock. Damn that guitar riff in Prowler....
Oh, iron maiden self titled debut album! I think I listen to this later at the gym. OK, this is hard rock and it’s not Bruce Dickinson it’s actually not that good.
Better than expected. 3/5
Not their best, not their worst
Not my favorite album of theirs but they are quintessential 80s rock/metal. Great band with a lot of classic songs.
Bueno, no está mal. Un 3. Transylvania y Phantom of the Opera.
I mean we all look like the guy on the cover after the last 2 years
I never have really listened to Iron Maiden 'til now. I like some of the music here but it's not enough to make me wanna listen to them. Favourite tracks from the album: Strange World Charlotte the Harolt
Pretty good, from before metal got too up it's own ass in the 80s
Number of the beast was better
I was dreading this but it’s less than 40 minutes so it’s ok, this is the way metal should be published
Reminds me of 80s 8-bit video game soundtracks for some strange reason. Expected it to sound harder and heavier than it does for a band with the name Iron Maiden. Reckon that’s partly due to the production, which lets the album down somewhat. Still it’s got ‘Phantom Of The Opera’ on it which is one of the great hard rock/metal songs of all time, so it’s not all bad.
3/5 okeyish
Better for not having Dickinson on it but the sexism was hard to stomach.
I saw Iron Maiden 3 times, but only ever with the original lead singer; Paul Di'anno. Brilliant live and, as this album shows, semi-punk before degenerating into run of the mill heavy metal. Okay, lyrically immature at times and definitely of it's time ("Charlotte the Harlot" for example) but it's still great.
Good album. Nothing too special but a fairly easy intro to metal for somebody that hasn't really listen to metal before.
The songs were pretty good. This is not the band's best album.
Karaoke night at the local pub. Creative writing class elective in High School. A cover band at the state fair. I worked for a couple of years in the early 1980s at a pizza parlor in Gainesville, FL, and was fortunate enough to often share a shift with a metal head named Kevin. He adored the Maiden. But probably not this particular one. Bruce Dickinson took over the vocalist’s duties beginning with their third LP, 'The Number of the Beast,' and THAT’s the Maiden he loved; and, the only one with which I’m familiar anyway. This one? Hmmm. Sounds more like Kiss, with Gene Simmons on lead vocals. I also felt an early Alice Coopery kind of vibe going on in ‘Remember.’ ‘Cept Alice sings better. The final and title track, ‘Iron Maiden’ sounded a bit Thin Lizzy. ‘Cept Phil Lynott sings way better. ‘Phantom of the Opera,’ the track I liked best, had some nice time changes back and forth from 4/4 to 3/4, and great instrumental work, reminiscent of early Rush. ‘Cept Geddy Lee sings better, and higher. And ‘Sanctuary’ had that same is-it-punk-or-is-it-metal fusion that always defined Motorhead, and their lead vocalist/bassist, the late Lemmy. Finally, someone Paul Di’Anno sings better than. So, there’s that. And then there’s the lyrics. I mean, ‘Charlotte the Harlot,’ really? Pretty rudimentary, both thematically, and rhythmically. The way I’m certain I rhymed when I wrote songs as a teenager. And to be fair, that was probably Maiden’s target audience back then anyway. (As a side, these lyrics reveal how gifted other poets from Dylan to Nas truly are.) Musically, Maiden’s already cooking. They just needed a little more time in the oven. Play that 3rd LP and see for yourself. That’s the Maiden that’ll satisfy your appetite for metal. Hey, sometimes a band’s debut LP is terrific. Unfortunately, Maiden’s is just ok. I’ve heard worse.
Solid 80s rock!
A garage-rock cover band of their future selves, with Dickinson trying to sound like Rob Halford.
Not a fan, but it wasn't as bad as I expected. The instrumentals were fine, so the less vocals the better. The sound was rawer than I expected, more of a punk feel, which is a good thing.
Some of these early metal albums pretty good, not much far away from Black sabbath
I feel like I can hear the genuine influence this album had on Jack Black lol. Especially on the first track, always makes me laugh when I hear some of the inspiration from Tenacious D. I wonder if Their self titled album or Pick of Destiny will show. At the very least all I can do is hope ya know?
Ripping album but sounded a little weird and flat.
Enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. I didn't realise it wasn't Bruce Dickinson though, shows how much I know
Hard rock album that feels like it started the bands leaning more metal than the anthem rock. Several songs are filled with instrumentals. The album as a whole doesn’t really appeal to me but it has talent. 5.5/10
Not my style, but there are some good songs
It's not Bruce, but it's not terrible.
Sounds like wankery to me. I can tolerate it but I don't love it, or even like it that much.
Can't really get into this much, has that cheesy wankery that I almost roll my eyes at. Iconic though.
Rocks
I was hesitant but I liked this. Spirited metal and - like all good music - it has secret pop roots. As well, I spent too long lolzing at the title "Charlotte the Harlot". It wasn't even the best track - that was probably "Phantom of the Opera" which was pleasingly epic but at a reasonable seven minutes. This is a great example of a band that absolutely excels in their genre. And by excels I mean rocks.
Iron Maiden By Iron Maiden Off Of Iron Maiden
Some songs seemed harder rock, some more classic. Overall an interesting album that I should revisit to pick a favorite or two.
Had some interesting moments. Felt kinda cheesy at times. Overall okay, but I don't think I'll listen to it again.
Awesome raw force. Decent songwriting overall with one or two killer hits. One or two quite original songs, with some dope "loose" riffs that are pretty fun to ride alongside
7/10
Buen disco
Interesting album, vocals not my thing. Good solid metal riffs
Solid
Metal classic - actual score 3.5
Not for me. Too many notes. But the technique is impressive.
Enjoyed this. Phantom of the Opera slapped heavy.
Iron Maiden are hugely popular. They don’t need to add me as a fan. Good luck to ‘em.
Punk, metal and prog all combined - awesome. It includes Phantom of the opera, running free, iron maiden and prowler. Great debut, but not perfect - 3.75
Not something that I'm likely to listen to a lot, but it definitely rocks.
It's hard to imagine that Iron Maiden goes back to 1980 with their debut album. This borders between the iconic British hard rock sound that was emerging from Europe and what would eventually become the sound of later 80s and 90s Heavy Metal. This album is a great little time capsule piece.
Give me Bruce every day
teeter totters just on the right side of cheesey. less comedy than most the maiden stuff i've heard. its made me have the realisation that i'm slowly becoming the middle aged metal man in the pub. I'm basically a pair of stonewashed jeans away.
Not the greatest Maiden album, but decent for its time
Not sure what i'll make of this. At least albums were short in those days! "Prowler" - like it more than Korn, at least. More melodic quite enjoying, not as nasty as the imagery suggests is should be - some tunes in there. "Remember Tomorrow" "Running Free" "Phantom of the Opera" - dragged a bit. "Transylvania" (instrumental) - didn't notice this really. "Strange World": almost a nice song strummy, although the sinigng isn't amazing, of course. "Charlotte the Harlot" - a bit silly. "Iron Maiden" - silly again.
Well this one surprised.me. this is so far removed from what I was listening to in 1980. But I enjoyed it. I think because the guitar wakety was left to a minimum replaced by beautiful 2 guitar interplay. The singing was restrained and the playing was of course skillfull without being too showy. 3.5 🌟
Better than I expected. Wouldn’t say I ever listen again but I have a new respect for Iron Maiden
A somewhat punk-y debut from the heavy metal legends. Di’Anno isn’t my cup of tea but he gives a real punk edge to a good part of the album. The rest of the band shred through with gusto, and overall the music here is pretty great.
G - 3.5 - Great riff and vocals but bit repetitive. B - 3.5 - at first thought it was weird not to have Bruce's vocals but actually pretty good.
Riffs at various times reminded me of Metallica’s black album, Green Day dookie, and System of a Down. Some songs fun but got a little boring. Was probably more exciting when it came out in its own era.
Good sounds, just not my style
Great fun to listen to.
I enjoyed this more than I expected, I liked the drama of it! Sometimes the guitar solos did go on a little bit too long for me. It's funny, I would never have thought I'd like listening to Iron Maiden.
Pretty solid metal album. Rocks hard. I still like Bruce as a vocalist for this band better, but this is definetly a good start for them!
Nor bad, but not great. Not what expected.
Lot's of headbanging going on with this one. What can I say, Iron Maiden rips.
This is not my thing at all, but I can sort of see the appeal. Honestly I thought it would be harder to listen to than it was. Perhaps the instrumentals would be more enjoyable without the vocals?
"Prowler" Heavy. Guitars with interesting double-lead harmonies. Definitely sounds dated, but you hear the nucleus of a sound that defined the new wave of British Metal. Can see how they influenced early Def Leppard. The Drums are killer. Double-kick. Can hear the Geezer Butler inspired bass-lines clearly. "Remember Tomorrow" is good. Interesting changes in tempo and mood. "Running Free" Groovy. Production is sparse, but the drums are driving. Got those strong Thin Lizzy-eque guitars. The lyrics aren't much to write home about. He's runnin' free yeah. He's runnin free. "Phantom of the Opera" Cool how the verse melody matches the guitar riff. Interesting rhythmically and melodically. Ooh, I like this change that starts with "Keep your distance..." The changes make it almost proggy. [Overall ,the production is tinny and thin. Could do with more mid to low end] "Transylvania" Interesting instrumental with the trademark harmony leads on guitars. "Strange World" I like the arpeggios in the intro. The lead guitar over the top is fluid and strong. Like it. Definitely hear a Genesis "Musical Box" influence on this. Has some similarity in feel to a lot of Nursery Cryme. "Charlotte the Harlotte" This is a manly rock song. Almost self-parody. Spinal Tap. "Iron Maiden" An eponymous song. Like "Black Sabbath".
3.2 - Solid elements of speed metal, maybe mashed through an Atari filter. Definitely corny at parts, esp. "Charlotte the Harlot." Shredding guitars throughout, which overall make this a righteous affair.
Wow, this was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting! I think I’ve avoided IM because of their album covers, and by the time they came out in ’80, metal was so in my rearview mirror. After listening, over the last few weeks, to quite a few talented singer-songwriters with hopeless voices, it’s good to hear Di'Anno’s raspy voice. The guitar riffs are cliched, but the songs have energy and the 2 proggy-balads are nice. I can see the youths going crazy for this. A solid 5 out of 10.
Having trouble accessing album
i can see why people love it. I guess Its just not pulling me in very much
I’ve listened to tons of bands that have named Maiden as an influence, and have never listened to them myself. It was like I knew what was going to happen next every step of the way. Also, Tenacious D could easily re-record this album and I don’t think anyone would notice.
I'm more of a Judas Priest guy, but I enjoyed it enough. First track got me into it, then the first ballad was alright. Think it fell apart with that Phantom of the Opera one.
As I said yesterday - this was enjoyable and FUNNY. Men taking themselves seriously but actually singing in funny voices with mad over the top guitar solos. It was a great start to the day though
Great stuff - Had no idea they were such amazing musicians.
Not really my style of music, but it turned out to be very good music for focusing!
That was fun. Again? Nah.
Not as heavy as I expected considering Black Sabbath came 10 years before. Pretty good
Not as good as the Dickinson-era when it comes to vocals. The production could use a bit more base, some of the songs feel a bit flat. Overall pretty good.
Great
It was ok....
Surprisingly Queen-like, I enjoyed it.
Pretty hardcore, brah. Strange world surprisingly chill
I now understand jack black's origin story. Objectively very musically talented first album
1. Strong opening track, vocals are pretty nice. Reminds me a bit of Schism by Tool. Goes ham at 1:45. 2. Opening riff is really cool. Cool bassline. 3. Drums and bass are so good. 4. Overall rhythm of the track is really cool, I like how the main riff follows the lyrics. 5. Not bad. 6. Song overall is amazing, I love the bass a lot and guitar with weird effects. Favorite on the entire album. 7. Riff is nice, so is the bass. 8. Pretty cool, really liked the riffs.
Good to start with something I wouldn't normally listen to. Not really my thing but did find myself enjoying it. Strange World was probably favourite track. Listened in a few sittings as I was doing other things
Not a huge fan of metal, but this at least was not screaming.
Pretty cool as far as metal bands go, the way they play on different riffs and transition to very different sounds makes me think of classical music.
Production is rough even for early 80s metal but there are some really good songs on this. Probably falls out of my top 3 prime Maiden records, though.
Interesting to see the genesis of the band. It's okay.
pleasent . noice almost . but nothing popping out
As I told Nathaniel, I heard inspiration in this album for the later-to-come Tenacious D. Very rock n roll for the 80s and beyond era. Made me want to smash a guitar into a TV and then light the curtains on fire.
Bit disappointed as I expected more based on the name and their legacy. It wasn't bad however I found it in-between sounds, not really being either and thus kinda average
Kovaa rockia vaikkakin orkesterilta löytyy parempiakin levyjä
Pleasantly surprised. This was their first album and, whilst still hard rock, there was restraint and control here. Can’t fully get behind the genre still, but stronger than I thought it would be and I’m still thinking of some of the tracks the next day.
Banger
It was okay. I liked some of the guitar work on the longer songs. 3.5
The fact that heavy metal is called heavy metal continues to confuse me. Iron Maide is good at it I suppose. Wish the 9-track version was on streaming. Don't really get it, but was a fun listen. Satisfying song lengths.
a nEWwwww StraagNNGE Worllld!!
I never have really listened to Iron Maiden until now, but I was under the assumption that they were a "harder" or more aggressive band, but this album does not give me that impression.
I didn't mind it, but wow heavy metal isn't really very heavy, is it
Iron Maiden sounding like Iron Maiden albeit rougher about the edges.
Bättre än när Bruce sjunger iallafall!
it was meh not alot to say 5/10
Childish Heavy Metal
Nothing really stood out
Very middle of the road album for me, I didn't hate any songs, but none stuck out either. True 2.5, rounded down since I can't pick one as a favorite.
The Good: We get a maiden! The Bad: Finding out what an Iron Maiden is… The Ugly: Album Name = Band Name… Gonna keep it brief. There were 3 songs that I recognized instantly, and they were fine to listen to… however, unlike their album The Number of the Beast, I really wanted this album to be over and done with… Don’t know if that has to do with this singer… Don’t know much… 2* that could be 3, but ain’t….
Maybe because it there debut album its not that much 4.2/10 has some potentials
80's heavy metal not my jam
I'm not a metal fan so this did nothing for me and can't say I enjoyed much of anything here.
forced to sit through another 80s heavy metal album. wasn't made at Remember Tomorrow at all. A different sound form what I expected and even though i wasn't totally in love with it, it was nice to have a surprise. Everything else was exactly how I expected. It all runs together. These riffs do absolutely nothing for me
Middle school pap. No.
Not my vibe
Iron Maiden can absolutely shred which is what makes this album incredibly disappointing. They're barely holding it together with crappy amps, crappy guitars, crappy production and an absolutely painfully bad lead singer. It's telling that only a couple of years later, with Bruce in the band, they were suddenly metal fucking royalty, outriffing everyone else in the scene. There's some good tunes here but overall this is pretty awful.
Gear: ZMF Auteur Classic LTD Shedua Artwork: 👹🪥🌃 Production (2015 Remaster): ⚡🕰️💩 Music: 🪓🔁🗿 Rating: 🦾🦾(🦾)/5
There is a thin line between heavy metal and Rush and that line is called Iron Maiden. Drummer is good. The rest, meh.
not my style ale oksik
Better than I expected to be fair. It's not horrible, and at times it's pretty fun, but it's still a load of widdling guitars and all the subtlety of an air horn in the face.
I want this to be my vibe but it's just not. Thanks to my high school boyfriend for forever ruining Iron Maiden for me...
Just not for me.
I don’t love it or hate it, I never gelled with Maiden, you can definitely hear the through lines for the gutter of the genre, but ultimately find the songs uninspiring in a modern context. If I could I’d give it 2.5
[Album #5] Honestly really bored me. not for me. the first few songs were fine, i didn’t like them but they were fine, but then it just kept going. felt longer than 37 mins. i didn’t think i was going vibe with this and i didn’t. i’m not the biggest metal fan and definitely not early metal. like a 1.5-2/5 for me.
Thrash-tastic
Not my favorite metal album ever, but not terrible either.
Not my thing. Definitely my cousin’s.
Well, I laughed a lot at the lyrics, typical of the 80s. Fortunately they band changed for the better with time!
Not much for me, personally
Weirdly chilled out. I just can’t get into it though. Just feels so silly.
Edit: I ended up getting two Iron Maiden albums in a row. Downgrading this one because it’s not as good as the other
I'm guessing this was chosen because it was influential to a whole genre of music? It's almost good most of the time. Tiptoeing right on the line of hair/glam metal and what Iron Maiden would eventually become. but, man, Transylvania and Charlotte.... brings it down several notches.
First thought was “ugh,” but I listened for the first time and it wasn’t as bad as I expected. But that cover art is UUUGGGLLY.
not my style, great album. (PERSONAL RATING: 2,4
Remember Tomorrow is great if you took all the screamy bits out of it. on the whole the album is not as bad as I was expecting. Still lots of rapid frantic screamy vocals and guitar, but at least some variation. Strange World is head and shoulders the standout track, but I had pretty much had enough after that. Will not listen to it again. 2.5 stars
Metal
More jagged and punky than expected, but ultimately marred by some infuriating vocal tics and a generally over theatrical approach. I actually liked the production which the band have criticised. Not really for me but appreciated giving it more of a listen.
Never really listened to Iron Maiden before but I thought it would be more "metal", was more of a classic rock sounding album.
Laulukin on melko väkinäistä.
done
solid
Not very memorable
Review - do you really need to hear a pre Bruce Dickinson Iron Maiden album? I can now confirm "no". This album was ok. Two of the songs were quite good. But it doesn't need to be heard. Rating - 5/10 Need to hear? NO
Just not my kind of music
it's fine. Definitely skilled musicians making fun music, but I get bored with it.
Meh. Not my cupa
Couple of decent tunes but largely meh
I actually kind of like Iron Maiden, but this is not nearly as good as the later albums to me. Though my memory is based entirely on high school me listening to it at Danny's house
Apparently I am not a metal person.
